Giovani Santillan Wins by KO at “Path to Glory” Ontario, CA

ORANGE, Calif. (Feb. 22, 2015) – Undefeated junior welterweight prospect Giovani Santillan (16-0, 9 KOs) was just starting to get warm when he knocked out Eduardo Rivera (9-2-2, 3 KOs) at the 2:28 mark of the first round in the “Path to Glory” main event. Santillan, from San Diego, walked right through Rivera’s defense and staggered him with combinations to the head and body.

“I told everyone that I wasn’t going to waste any time tonight,” Santillan said. “I wanted to control the ring from the start and I did just that.”

Santillan punched Rivera into a corner and unloaded powerful sets of punches that proved too much for him.

“He looked spectacular tonight,” said Ken Thompson, president and founder of Thompson Boxing Promotions. “We expect more performances like this in the future.”

In the 8-round co-main event, super bantamweight Isaac Zarate (10-1-1, 1 KO) cruised to a unanimous decision win (79-72, 78-73, 79-72) over Pedro Melo (12-7-2, 3 KOs). Zarate, a southpaw, used an effective jab to close the distance against the more experienced Melo. He charged forward for most of the fight and managed to land flurries at the end of almost every round.

“I wanted to come out aggressive and grab the early round momentum,” Zarate said. “He landed some good shots, but it didn’t faze me. I just kept to the game plan and got the win.”

Top welterweight prospect and former Ukrainian Olympian Taras Shelestyuk (11-0, 8 KOs) overwhelmed the slower Francisco Reza (13-12, 10 KOs), knocking him out at the 1:26 mark of the third round. In the first, Shelestyuk jumped on Reza early landing several combinations that produced a clean knockdown.

In the second, Shelestyuk tagged Reza whenever he wanted. By the third, Reza was visibly hurt and hoping to survive the round, but Shelestyuk kept the pressure for his eighth KO win.

Former Colombian Olympian Cesar Villarraga (6-0, 4 KOs) hardly broke a sweat during his knockout victory over Jesus Angulo (3-7, 2 KOs). Villarraga hit Angulo with a two-punch combination to the body and head that sent him crashing to the canvas. The knockout occurred at the 1:55 mark of the first round.

“He got a little sloppy with his defense and I took advantage,” said Villarraga, who is co-promoted by Thompson Boxing Promotions and Gary Shaw Productions. “I knew he was done when I landed that second left hook upstairs.”

Junior flyweight Gilberto Mendoza (5-4, 1 KO) of Modesto, Calif. handed Francisco Javier Lapizco (7-1, 2 KOs) his first professional defeat. Unanimous decision scores read 58-56, 59-55, 58-56. Mendoza showed solid technical skills, while Lapizco was unable to settle into his usual counter-punching groove.

Undefeated heavyweight LaRon Mitchell (6-0, 6 KOs) extended his knockout streak to six with a fourth round KO of Phoenix-native Chad Davis (5-13, 1 KO) on the opening bout of “Path to Glory.”

Mitchell, from San Francisco, worked the body early and often. He connected in the third with a powerful body shot that dropped the shorter Davis. In the fourth and final round, Mitchell delivered the knockout body punch at the :44 second mark.

“Chad’s camp came in talking a lot of trash so it was only fitting that I knocked him out,” said Mitchell, who signed with Thompson Boxing Promotions last year. “It was a sweet win.”

“Path to Glory” was presented by Thompson Boxing Promotions and sponsored by Lucas Oil, in association with LATV Networks.

Fedosov, Dennis, Thomas and Cojanu advance in Boxcino Heavyweight tournament

Verona, NY (February 22, 2015)–Andrey Fedosov, Donovan Dennis, Lenroy Thomas and Razvan Cojanu all scored victories in their quarterfinal bouts in the Boxcino Heavyweight tournament at the Turning Stone Resort Casino.

The show was promoted by Banner Promotions and was broadcasted live on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights.

All Boxcino bouts were scheduled for 6 rounds.

Dennis took out previously undefeated Steve Vukosa in round four.

Dennis dominating Vukosa
Dennis was the much quicker fighter from the outset and landed hard shots on Vukosa from early on. In round three, Dennis dropped Vukosa from a hard combination. Vukosa was never the same as he was staggered a few more times and even looked like he had no defense as he tried to turn his back several times on Dennis until he was dropped again in the fourth round and the fight was stopped at 2:52.

Dennis, 222 lbs of Davenport, Iowa is now 13-2 with 10 knockouts. Vukosa, 218 lbs of Quincy, Massachusetts is now 10-1.

“He was a patient fighter and early on, I took what I could get,” said Dennis. “I was working off my jab and started to connect. I trained very hard and I had a lot more in the tank. I was a little mad that it was stopped early. I can’t wait to get back in the gym and work on getting better.”

Andrey Fedosov scored an emphatic 1st round stoppage over Nate Heaven

In round one, Fedosov dropped Heaven with a thudding left hook. He sent him to the canvas for a 2nd time with a devastating three punch combination that sent Heaven to the deck for a second time and the fight was stopped at 2:53.

Fedosov knocking Heaven Down

“Everything went as planned,” said Fedosov. “My plan was to shorten the distance and use my power and you see what happened.”

Razvan Cojanu won a drawbreaker decision over Ed Fountain.

Fountain did his best to get inside and force that action under the ineffective jab of Cojanu. Both guys had success on the inside during the grueling fight and the bout was even after six.

Fountain started the 7th with a nice left that split open the right eyelid of of Cojanu. Cojanu was able to fight back and land a hard combination on the ropes and that proved to be the difference in the fight.

Cojanu, 265 lbs of Las Vegas via Romania is now 13-1. Fountain, 236 1/2 lbs of Furguson, MO is now 10-1.

Cojanu and Fountain
“I could not see anything and I won the fight with one eye,” said Cojanu.

“Buddy McGirt told me to jab more and that could have made it easier.”

Said Fountain, “I fought hard. The referee did not help me but I will see Razvan again after the tournament.

Lenroy Thomas opened up the Boxcino quarterfinals with a drawbreaker decision over former U.S. Olympian Jason Estrada.

Each guy traded some good shots over the first two-plus rounds. Thomas landed a solid three punch combination in round three. Estrada was effective when he was able to get in the straight right.

In round four, the two clashed heads and it caused a small cut on the forehead of Estrada. The bout was competitive with each guy taking turns being the boss in short spurts. After the sixth round, the bout was a even on the scorecards and they went to the seventh and deciding drawbreaker round.

In that extra frame, Thomas boxed well by landing quick combinations to a visibly tired Estrada and he was declared the winner by unanimous decision.

Thomas, 237 lbs of St. Petersburg, Florida is now 19-3. Estrada, 261 lbs of Providence, Rhode Island is now 20-6.

Lenroy Thomas

“I showed that hard work pays off,” said Thomas.

“In the extra round, I had to dig deep and show my boxing skills.”

Thomas will meet Fedosov in one semifinal while Dennis will battle Cojanu.

Both semifinals will take place on Friday, April 10 at the Sands in Bethlehem, PA

Greg Jackson registered two knockdowns en route to a four round unanimous decision over Paulo Souza in a Jr, Middleweight bout.

Paul Koon to battle Rex Harris in a battle of undefeated Heavyweights tonight!! at the Econo Lodge in Allentown, PA

Allentown, PA (February 21, 2015)–Over the past several years, heavyweight Paul Koon (2-0, 1 KO) has been rumored to turn professional on various cards in the Philadelphia area.

Each time he decided to sat participating in the World Series of Boxing.

Finally last October 4, Koon turned professional with a one stoppage over Hector Hodge and on November 20, Koon followed that up with a 4-round unanimous decision over Yohan Banks.

Those fights were in Connecticut and California respectively and tonight at the Econo Lodge in Allentown, he takes on Rex Harris(1-0-2) of Wilkes-Barre, PA in Koon’s first area appearance.

That 4-round bout will be part of a nine bout card promoted by King’s Promotions.

In the main event, Frank De Alba (14-1-2, 5 KO’s) of Reading, PA will take on Jose Bustos (7-2-3, 4 KO’s) of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico in a 8-round fight for the UBF All Americas Jr. Lightweight title.

Koon of Philadelphia has been working hard and is looking to put on a good performance.

“Everything is great. I been working in the gym, sparring and running,”said the 28 year-old.

“All I know about my opponent is that he has fought some MMA fights and he is undefeated (1-0-2) as a boxer.”

Koon is looking for a test as during his 4 year run in the World Series of Boxing, he took on the top fighters from around the world.

“I am used to fighting top level competition. I am not used to fighting the level of guys I have been fighting in my first couple of fights. In the World Series of Boxing, you fight only the elite fighters. There are no journeymen.”

To get to the type of competition that, Koon knows he has to continue to win and make sound decisions with his team.

“It is not one member of my team that decides the pace that I move at. Whatever they think is best. Sometimes you have to take it slow. Me, I like to rush but I know I am learning everything in the business. This is my first fight in the area in seven years and I am using it as a steppingstone to a fight in Philadelphia.”

In the co-feature, Juan Dominguez (17-0, 11 KO’s) of Brooklyn, NY will fight Carlos Rodriguez (19-16-4, 11 KO’s) of Los Mochis, MX in a Super Bantamweight bout.

Mayweather – Pacquiao details and quotes

Floyd Mayweather 2
The following are some details and quotes according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“I am glad my decision to meet with Manny and discuss making this fight happen helped get the deal done,” Mayweather said, referring to a chance Jan. 27 meeting with Pacquiao at a Miami Heat game followed by a private discussion after the game. “Giving the fans what they want to see is always my main focus. This will be the biggest event in the history of the sport.”

The networks resultingly will come together to produce and distribute a joint pay-per-view telecast, which is expected to cost a record-high $89.95 (and probably $10 more for high definition).

“I am very happy that Floyd Mayweather and I can give the fans the fight they have wanted for so many years,” Pacquiao said. “They have waited long enough and they deserve it. It is an honor to be part of this historic event. I dedicate this fight to all the fans who willed this fight to happen and, as always, to bring glory to the Philippines and my fellow Filipinos around the world.”

“Boxing fans and sports fans around the world will witness greatness on May 2,” Mayweather said. “I am the best ever, TBE, and this fight will be another opportunity to showcase my skills and do what I do best, which is win. Manny is going to try to do what 47 before him failed to do, but he won’t be successful. He will be number 48.”

On Friday afternoon, Top Rank was notified and Mayweather made the announcement about an hour later, though the deal had been done for a couple of days with both sides having signed the paperwork. Contracts were also signed by broadcasters HBO and Showtime, who will team for a historic joint pay-per-view.

“It’s hasn’t been easy,” Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told ESPN.com. “But I think in some strange way the inability to get the fight done before now enhances its value and this is one event that the public all over the world has been talking about and discussing for years. The interest in the fight will be absolutely red-hot. I’ve been promoting boxing for nearly 50 years and there is nothing that has come close to this because there has been nothing that has been so difficult to come to fruition. As interest is concerned, this is akin to the first (Muhammad) Ali-(Joe) Frazier fight.

“You have to be grateful that this is finally happening. You can’t bemoan the false starts and the inability to do this before. It’s here now.”

“Everyone involved, including Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, knows this fight simply had to happen,” said Stephen Espinoza, executive vice president and general manager of Showtime Sports. “All of us are thrilled to be able to deliver this event to boxing fans around the world.

“Now, for the second time under his current deal with Showtime Networks, Floyd Mayweather has agreed to fight an opponent that many people thought he’d never face. We set an all-time pay-per-view record with the first event back in September 2013 (with Alvarez) and we look forward to another record-breaking performance on May 2.”

Said HBO Sports president Ken Hershman: “Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather have been the two most prominent fighters in the sport of boxing for the past decade, and fight fans around the world have been clamoring for them to face each other.

“And now, on May 2, in what everyone believes will be the biggest boxing event of all time, fight fans have been granted their wish. May 2 will be a signature moment for the sport of boxing and HBO Sports is thrilled to be a part of this spectacular event. I know the fighters and their teams will be primed to excel and we plan to work closely with everyone involved to deliver the same level of performance from a broadcast perspective.”

“The reason I like my guy’s chances so much is because of his speed, the tremendous number of punches he throws, the quality of his punches and the fact that he is left-handed,” Arum said. “Top Rank promoted Floyd Mayweather for 10½ years and we recognized that he had difficulty handling a speedy, left-handed fighter and that he and his father (and trainer, Floyd Mayweather Sr.) were insistent that we not match Floyd with a southpaw. I remember two fights he had with southpaws who didn’t have the ability Mann has but who gave him trouble — (DeMarcus) ‘Chop Chop’ Corley, who buzzed him and had him in real trouble and Zab Judah.”

Said Freddie Roach, Pacquiao’s Hall of Fame trainer: “Floyd should enjoy being the A-Side while he can because on May 2 Manny is going to put him on his backside.”

“MAYWEATHER VS. PACQUIAO”: STEPHEN ESPINOZA AND KEN HERSHMAN MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL HIGHLIGHTS

NEW YORK (Feb. 20, 2015) — It’s a done deal! Undefeated Floyd Mayweather (47-0, 26 KOs) will fight longtime rival Manny Pacquiao (57-5-2, 38 KOs) in a Welterweight World Championship Unification Bout live on Pay-Per-View on Saturday, May 2.

Stephen Espinoza, Executive Vice President and General Manager of SHOWTIME Sports, and Ken Hershman, President of HBO SPORTS, were made available to the media just minutes after the fight was officially announced by Mayweather via his Shots account.

Here are highlights from what Hershman and Espinoza had to say Friday:

KEN HERSHMAN, President HBO SPORTS

“This is the biggest boxing event of all time, we’re confident of that. We couldn’t be prouder to be a part of it and help craft it.
“We look forward to May 2. It’s going to be a spectacular night for this sport and for HBO and SHOWTIME as well.

“The Mike Tyson-Lennox Lewis joint pay-per-view fight was a great roadmap for this fight. It showed that this can be done successfully. There’s a lot of mechanics that go into this when two networks are working together, and those mechanics carry forward in terms of how things operate behind the scenes.

“The fight will be held on traditional pay-per-view, nothing out of the ordinary on that front. We’re looking forward to getting going, there’s a lot of hard work ahead of us.”

STEPHEN ESPINOZA, Executive Vice President & General Manager SHOWTIME Sports

“We’re thrilled to be a part of what we expect to be a record-breaking event. This deal is a product of a lot of hard work with some blood, sweat and tears along the way.
“I took this job approximately three years ago; the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight has been a topic of conversation and a goal of not only ours, but of Floyd Mayweather’s since he came over to SHOWTIME a little less than three years ago.

“I believe that the direct line of communication between Floyd and Manny cleared up a lot of doubts on both of their minds and renewed their commitment to getting this fight done.

“We have had significant discussions as to who will make up the broadcast team; it will be an all-star team with a combination of talent from both networks.

“The meeting between Floyd and Manny at the Miami Heat game certainly greased the wheels in getting through the final stages of the process.

“One of the main reasons why this deal got done, as opposed to deals in the past, was because Leslie Moonves [President and CEO, CBS Corporation] was a part of the process. He was deeply committed to making this deal and was someone that all parties in this negotiation really respect. He was really the catalyst for seeing this through and refused to take no for an answer from any side.

“We believed this day would come, we worked hard to make it happen and we’re thrilled that it is here.”

ZOU SHIMING WELCOMES THE CHINESE NEW YEAR WITH A LOT OF PUNCH AT WILD CARD BOXING CLUB

Zou Shiming
HOLLYWOOD, CALIF. (February 20, 2015) — Gong xi fa cai! Good luck and prosperity in 2015! The Chinese New Year has begun. Tradition dictates that you bid farewell to the old year with graciousness and gratitude and welcome in the new year — this is the Year of the Sheep (or Ram or Goat, depending on whom you ask) — sharing time and celebrating with family and friends over sumptuous feasts.

Unless you are a Chinese icon named ZOU SHIMING who is 15 days away from the most important fight of his boxing career — challenging undefeated International Boxing Federation (IBF) flyweight world champion AMNAT RUENROENG.

“We are preparing for the Shiming Dynasty. There are no holidays in training camp when a world title is at stake,” said Hall of Fame trainer World-Famous Freddie Roach. “Shiming will have to sacrifice the traditional feasts celebrating the Year of the Sheep to focus on making the 112-pound weight limit and honing his boxing skills. Ewe could say that makes Zou Shiming a mutton for punishment.”

You say you want a resolution. Well, you know. We all want to change the world…champion. In a tip of the hat to the American tradition of making New Year’s resolutions, Zou Shiming offered his today:

· Become a World Champion and to develop the sport and business of Boxing in China. To become more of a fan of the sport rather than just a competitor.
· Take some time off to rest, travel and vacation with my family.
· Eat more Hot Pot (http://www.seriouseats.com/2015/02/how-to-make-chinese-hot-pot-at-home-guide.html). And to eat more, period!
· Put on some weight (See “Eat More Hot Pot” resolution!)
· Shop for new clothes that are not workout related! I have been in training camp so long I feel like a model for the Wild Card Boxing Club clothing line!

Two-time Chinese Olympic gold medalist and three-time World Amateur Champion Zou (6-0, 1 KO), from Guizhou, China, is training to become China’s first Olympic champion to win a world title in the professional ranks. Zou challenges Ruenroeng (14-0, 5 KOs), from Si Racha, Thailand, in the main event of The Showdown at Sands, Saturday, March 7, at The Venetian® Macao’s Cotai Arena. Promoted by Top Rank® and Sands China Ltd., in association with Tecate, SECA, Kreerin Promotions, Sampson Boxing and Foreman Boys Promotions, the Zou Shiming – Amnat Ruenroeng World Flyweight Championship fight will be televised via same-day delay on HBO2, beginning at 5:00 p.m. ET/PT. The HBO2 telecast will open with a 10-round NABO junior middleweight title tilt between GLEN TAPIA (22-1, 14 KOs), of Passaic, NJ, and one-time world title challenger DANIEL DAWSON (40-4-1, 26 KOs), of Perth, Australia. Veteran boxing blow-by-blow man and WNBC-TV’s lead sports anchor Bruce Beck and award-winning broadcaster and analyst Rich Marotta will be calling the action from ringside.

The undercard will feature JOSE FELIX, Jr. (28-1-1, 23 KOs), from Los Mochis, Mexico, battling RAYMOND SERMONA, (17-4-5, 8 KOs), of Manila, in an eight-round lightweight bout which will be televised via same-day delay on UniMás, and Top-10 contenders IK YANG (17-0, 12 KOs), of Dalian, China and PATOMSUK PATHOMPOTHONG (30-2-1, 18 KOs), of Kalasin, Thailand, squaring off in a 12-round IBF junior welterweight title elimination bout.

Making the Zou-Ruenroeng fight even more intriguing is the history these two warriors already have with each other. Their amateur trilogy began with Ruenroeng winning their first battle — as a late substitute called up by the Thailand amateur team — at the 2007 King’s Cup, which was also Ruenroeng’s first international competition. Zou won the next two times they fought, including a reverse in their semi-final of the 2010 Asian Games that could have gone either way — and did. Now that they are professionals, the stakes are much higher and their simmering rivalry is set to become a roiling boil.

Martin Murray: “It doesn’t bother me that Golovkin hits hard”

Martin Murray
LONDON (20 FEB) World middleweight title challenger Martin Murray has heard all about the reputation of Gennady Golovkin, his next opponent, and respects the fact he’s widely considered the hardest puncher in all of boxing right now. But that doesn’t mean the Briton is overawed or fearful of the imposing Kazakh.

In fact, rather than hide from the reality of the situation, Murray has instead confronted it head on and says he’s looking forward to sampling Golovkin’s power when the pair clash on Saturday (February 21) in Monte Carlo.

“I’ve been watching all his best bits,” said Murray, 29-1-1 (12 KOs). “I’ve not been looking at all the things he does wrong. Let’s be honest, he doesn’t do a lot wrong. What I’ve been focusing on are all the things he does well. I’ve been watching him at his absolute best. That then makes me more prepared, more nervous and more on my guard.

“His power is obviously something you have to look out for. He clearly hits hard. His general ring craft is very good as well. He’s very good at putting you in places he wants to put you.

“I think he does all things very well. He’s not just a big puncher – he seems to have the lot. But we’ve seen a couple of chinks in his armour and we feel there’s some stuff for us to work on during the fight. We’re confident it’s going to work. I’m looking forward to going in there on Saturday and trying them out.

“It doesn’t bother me that Golovkin hits hard. Don’t get me wrong, I’d prefer it if he hit a bit softer, but it doesn’t faze me knowing that I’m going to go in there with someone who knocks everybody out. I know he hits hard, I know it’s going to be a tough fight and I know I might get hurt. I’m ready and prepared for it, though.”

Murray is renowned for his ability to raise his game when necessary. A perennial underdog, the St. Helens man was desperately unlucky in his previous two world title fights, drawing with Felix Sturm in 2011 and then losing a controversial decision to Sergio Martinez in 2013. This time, however, he’s determined to make it third time lucky.

“This feels like the biggest fight of my career,” said the 32-year-old. “I’ve kind of been detached lately due to being based in South Africa, but now I’m in Monte Carlo and I can sense how big the fight is. This is it for me. There’s more riding on this fight than any other I’ve had, and I’m more determined and confident of winning this one than I was before the others.

“In fact, of all my world title fights, this is the one I’m most looking forward to. It feels like my biggest challenge, and it will be my toughest fight, but I’ve got confidence in my ability and know that in these situations I rise to the occasion and put on my best performances.

“I’m expecting a long, hard fight and I’m expecting to have to go through a lot of pain. But, no matter what it takes, and no matter what I have to go through, my hand is going to get raised at the end of that fight. I know this is a proper battle and I know it will have to be a war. I’m ready for it. I honestly can’t wait.”

Mayweather-Pacquiao: Negotiations have been the biggest show

By Norm Frauenheim–
Floyd Mayweather
A nervous rash escalated to full-blown panic on social media Thursday when speculation about the Floyd Mayweather Jr.- Manny Pacquaio negotiations reached a new high. Or is that a low?

Whatever it was, the monster got fed, leaving the world atwitter with anxious expectations that at any minute, any second, Mayweather would announce the May 2 fight is a done deal.

As I write this late Thursday, I’m still waiting and wondering why I am. It’s a fool’s errand. But the endless speculation has become a show unto itself. It’s enough to wonder what will happen when it ends with either a real fight or just more futility. If the fight is on, opening bell might not be preceded by as much attention as the talks were.

The fight is five or six years too late. Still, it’s intriguing, still worth a look, although maybe not at a rumored pay-per-view price of $100. But the bout can’t ever live up to the negotiations. Mayweather played it for every tweet and mistaken headline it was worth. The bet here is that the fight would be a letdown.

Mayweather’s feet don’t move at the blinding rate they used to. Marcos Maidana, a wild puncher without precision, got to him repeatedly.

Those same punches from a better tactician would have hurt Mayweather more than they did throughout 24 rounds against Maidana. It’s just one sign that Mayweather would hold, clinch and shoulder-roll as often as possible against Pacquaio.

Then, there’s Pacquaio, whose punches from countless angles overwhelmed Oscar De La Hoya. Pacquiao’s power lifted Ricky Hatton into midair and dropped the Brit onto the canvas like a guy falling off a diving board.

But that fear factor and much of the power are gone. Pacquiao knocked down Chris Algieri six times. But he couldn’t knock him out. Brandon Rios is a sturdy brawler, but he’s no De La Hoya. Rios is hittable. Yet, Pacquiao couldn’t stop him, either. Without a resurrection of that old power, Pacquaio figures to practice caution against Mayweather.

It’s become increasingly evident that neither Mayweather nor Pacquiao is the fighter of five, six years ago. Nevertheless, social media has been ablaze, motivated by their celebrity and the memory of who they were instead who they are. In large part, that’s a pretty good reason to believe that the deal is done and that they’ll fight in May instead of a later date, say September.

If they chose to fight in the interim, there are a lot of emerging faces in a younger generation who might beat them. Against a Keith Thurman or an Amir Khan, they might lose a fight and their share of a total purse reported to be $250 million. If they don’t do it now, they risk throwing away a fortune.

Follow the money. It says the fight is likely, but it’s hard to imagine how it could ever be more exciting than the talks were.
