SELDIN WINS TITLE IN WAR WITH JARGAL AT ROCKIN FIGHTS 16

In front of a sold out standing room crowd last night, December 20th, at The Paramount in Huntington, NY, Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing presented the 16th installment of the popular Rockin Fights series. Undefeated power punching prospect Cletus “The Hebrew Hammer” Seldin, 15-0 12KO’s, Shirley, NY, captured the vacant WBC International Jr. Welterweight title with a thrilling 9th round TKO over tough Bayan “The Mongolian Mongoose” Jargal, 16-6-1 11KO’s, Arlington, in the main event scheduled for 10 rounds.

Seldin started like a house on fire as the bell rang for round 1 as he charged right at Jargal and dropped him almost immediately with a picture perfect right hand. Seldin went for the early ending throwing everything at Jargal but Jargal withstood the onslaught and started firing his own shots back as the round ended.

The next three rounds saw toe to toe exchanges much to the delight of the pro Seldin crowd as each fighter landed numerous blows. Jargal tried to mount a comeback midway through the bout as he chased down Seldin landing many combinations to the head and body of Seldin however, Seldin continued to fire back at Jargal. Seldin exploded as the bell sounded for round 7 dropping Jargal for the second time with a 3 punch combination.

The 2 combatants continued to throw everything they had at each but eventually Seldin would get to Jargal late in the 9th round of the scheduled 10 round bout and finally got the stoppage win at 2:46 of the round after a barrage of hard punches to the head. The crowd roared its approval and gave both fighters a long standing ovation for the incredible battle they had just witnessed. With the win Seldin captures the vacant WBC International Jr. Welterweight title.

The much anticipated rematch of their first encounter ( which took place on July 18th of this year on ESPN, a fight which ended prematurely due to an eye injury suffered by Jargal,) did not disappoint as these two warriors fought a high pitched battle in front of a screaming standing room crowd.

The co-feature saw the Paramount debut and recent Star Boxing signing Joe “The Irish Bomber” Smith, 17-1 14KO’s, Mastic, NY, annihilate veteran Maxell Taylor, 18-10-1 8KO’s, Baltimore, MD, in just 37 seconds of the 1st round of a scheduled 8 round Light Heavyweight bout. Smith jumped right on Taylor backing him into a corner quickly and unleashed a non-stop flurry of hard punches to the head of a non-responsive Taylor forcing the referee to call a halt to the proceedings.

Other winners on the undercard included Constantin Bejenaru, 8-0 2KO’s, Catskill, NY, defeating Jon Bolden, 6-10-1 5KO’s, Brooklyn, NY by way of 6 round decision in an entertaining Heavyweight contest, Hicksville’s Anthony Karperis moved to 9-1 3KO’s with a much tougher than expected decision win over Ian James, 3-10-1 1KO, Brooklyn, NY over 6 rounds in the Lightweight division,
undefeated Wendy Toussaint, 6-0 1KO, Huntington, NY, registered his first knockout win as a pro as he stopped the usually durable Malik Jackson, 1-5-4, Newark, NJ, in the 2nd round of a scheduled 6 round Welterweight bout, and Huntington Lightweight Johnny “Hitman” Hernandez moved 2-0 1KO with a hard earned 4 round decision over tough Jack Grady, 0-1, Buffalo, NY.

Star Boxing chief Joe DeGuardia was thrilled with the outcome of the night as once again Star Boxing delivered the goods, filling the arena with incredibly energetic fans and with exciting, competitive action from top to bottom.

RANDY CABALLERO DEFENDS IBF BANTAMWEIGHT WORLD TITLE FOR FIRST TIME AGAINST ALBERTO GUEVARA AT FANTASY SPRINGS ON FEBRUARY 27

Randy_Caballero
LOS ANGELES (Dec. 22) – After piling up 12 wins in 12 fights at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, Calif., hometown hero Randy “El Matador” Caballero (22-0, 13 KOs) went on the road in search of a world championship. On October 25, it was mission accomplished for “El Matador” after he defeated England’s Stuart Hall in Monte Carlo. On Friday, February 27, the conquering hero returns to Indio’s Fantasy Springs Resort Casino to defend his IBF Bantamweight World Championship for the first time against Alberto “Metro” Guevara (18-2, 6 KOs) in a 12-round homecoming bout, presented by Golden Boy Promotions and televised by FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes.

“This is a night I’ve dreamed about for a long time, and I always said that the only thing better than winning a world title at home would be defending it there,” said Caballero. “I’m going to be tough and impress my fans at Fantasy Springs.”

“Randy Caballero is a good, young champion and he’s fighting in his backyard, but I feel like this is my time,” said Guevara. “I like being the underdog, and that will make my victory sweeter on February 27.”

“The fans at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino have watched Randy Caballero grow up as a fighter, so after he won a world title, our first order of business was bringing his first title defense back here,” said Oscar De La Hoya, President and Founder of Golden Boy Promotions. “It’s going to be a great night and a celebration of an exciting young champion, but Alberto Guevara knows what it’s going to take to beat Caballero, and he’s going to give everything he has to take the title.”

Tickets for the event, priced at $105, $75, $55, $45 and $35, and go on sale December 26, at the Fantasy Springs Box Office, by calling (800) 827-2946 or online at www.fantasyspringsresort.com.

A former amateur star, Randy “El Matador” Caballero (22-0, 13 KOs) has been a fighter to watch ever since his amateur days, and once he turned professional in 2010, he lived up to all of the hype. He dominated his opposition both at home and abroad. A former WBC Youth Intercontinental and NABO champion, Caballero earned a shot at a world title in April by stopping Kohei Oba in eight rounds in Kobe, Japan and in October he defeated Stuart Hall via unanimous decision in Monte Carlo to win the vacant IBF crown. On February 27 the 24-year-old puts his belt on the line for the first time.

A professional fighter since 2009, Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico’s Alberto “Metro” Guevara (18-2, 6 KOs) is a rugged warrior who battled his way up the bantamweight ladder, earning his first shot at a world title in 2012. Guevara lost a hard-fought decision to Leo Santa Cruz, but two wins over Jose Tirado and Jonathan Vidal put him right back at the top of the class. On February 27, following a hard-fought world title bout with Shinsuke Yamanaka, the 24-year-old Guevara hopes the third time is the charm against Caballero.

Cuellar doesn’t know what’s next, but says he wouldn’t mind a fight against former three-time world champion Abner Mares.

“I really wanted to make a good impression on the fans tonight and I’m looking forward to fighting often again next year,’’ Cuellar said. “There are a lot of possibilities, but I think the fighter I’d like to fight is Abner Mares, who I met recently in Las Vegas. He approached me and we took a picture together and then he tweeted it out, saying he wanted to fight me. Well, I’d like to fight him, too. It would be a really exciting fight for the fans.’’
Cuellar, a six-time Argentine national amateur champion and two-time South American amateur champion, is unbeaten as a professional since suffering his lone loss in October 2011.

His trainer, Robert Garcia, says Cuellar is still a work-in-progress and will continue to improve.

“We haven’t seen the best of Cuellar, not by a longshot,’’ Garcia said. “He’s making good progress from fight to fight, but still has things to learn. Little by little, though, he is getting better. There is not a fighter as dedicated as he is. He’s very disciplined, trains hard, spars hard and does everything to the extreme.

“With more time, I really expect great things out of him.’’

Gary Russell
Former world title challenger Gary Russell Jr. pounded out an easy 10-round unanimous decision over veteran Chris Martin in a Featherweight bout.

I wanted to get in some rounds, get some of the ring rust off and I did that too. I felt real comfortable in there. I wanted to box and show good ring generalship. It’s going to be a big 2015 for me.’’

Williams_Freeman
Good looking Jr. Middleweight prospect Julian Williams dominated Jarmar Freeman and scored an 8th round stoppage in a scheduled 10-round bout.

Williams dominated the fight by using his exceptional handspeed and combination punching for which Freeman had no answer for.

In round seven, Williams landed a perfect right hand that sent Freeman to a knee. Williams landed a huge flurry that sent Freeman down for a second time in the round. In round eight, Williams landed about six right hands that crumbled Freeman in the corner and the fight was stopped at 29 seconds of round eight.

Williams, 153 3/4 lbs of Philadelphia is now 18-0-1 with 11 knockouts. Freeman, 153 1/4 lbs of Wilson, NC is now 13-4-2.

“I knew he’d be tough, but it feels good to win by knockout,’’ said Williams, the new WBC Continental Americas 154-pound champion. “It’s crazy but this was my fourth scheduled 10-round and fourth knockout.

“Tonight, I just wanted to show patience and pace myself. My last fight was very disappointing to me. I rushed everything. I know I have to keep improving. When I watch tapes of my fights, I am not looking to admire myself but to see where I can improve.

“I’d like to improve 25 percent each time out. A lot of prospects get satisfied with early success, but I’m not like that. The 154-pound division is loaded. The top five guys, even the bottom five are all really tough. I want to be ready for all of them when my turn comes up.’

Punch stats saw Williams lands 136-367. Freeman was just 22-172

Jackson_Nelson
Julius Jackson scored a 9th round stoppage over Jonathan Nelson in a scheduled 10-round Super Middleweight bout.

Nelson had a brief comeback with some good counter shots in round six. Jackson came back to have a solid round seven and then dropped Nelson from a perfect right in round eight. The fight was stopped a round later after Jackson landed a few more telling blows at 28 seconds of round nine.

Jackson, 168 lbs of Virgin Islands is now 19-0 with 15 knockouts. Nelson, 167 1/2 lbs of Little Rock, Arkansas is now 19-2.

Jackson landed 186-468 punches while Nelson was just 68-200

“He was a tough fighter, much tougher than I thought,’’ said Jackson, 27, a five-year-pro and the son of former WBA Super Welterweight and two-time WBC Middleweight Champion Julian “The Hawk” Jackson and the older brother of super middleweight and fellow-2008 Olympian John Jackson. “He could take a punch. I don’t think I hit him that hard at the end. I feel a combination of punches may have worn him down a little.

“These are the kinds of fights I want, and hope to have. I want to prove myself to myself and these are the kinds of fights that will do it. I am happy with my performance tonight.’’

Offered Nelson, “I’m disappointed in losing but I think I gained a few fans along the way. I will definitely learn from this fight.’’

What the fighters said on Friday:

JESUS CUELLAR, interim WBA Featherweight World Champion

“I’m very happy to be headlining a SHOWTIME event. This is a great opportunity for me to establish myself as a household name in the United States.

“I don’t know much about [Ruben] Tamayo other than he’s a good fighter with a good record and has two arms and two legs. I’m definitely ready for him and won’t be overlooking him.

“I’ve had a great eight-week training camp with Robert Garcia in Oxnard [Calif.]. Robert is undoubtedly one of the greatest trainers in the world. He has so much knowledge and has taught me many things that apply not only inside the ring but outside, too.”

RUBEN TAMAYO, Featherweight Contender

“I feel privileged and blessed to be getting this shot. Cuellar is a tough champion who I have a lot of respect for. But inside the ring, I will show no respect. . This is really an opportunity of a lifetime, my lifelong dream.

“I’m here to take care of business and I know exactly what I’m supposed to do. A win will open my so many doors for me. I am very confident. For sure, I think this will be the toughest fight of his career.’’

GARY RUSSELL JR. Former World Title Challenger

“I’ve been training for about two months. My hands are fine and I’m roaring to get in the ring. I’m fighting a tough guy who is definitely confident that he can upset me, which is exactly the kind of fighter I want to fight.

“I will never get over the loss to [Vasyl] Lomachenko. Even if we fight again and I beat him, I will never forget that first loss.

“I expect 2015 will be a very big year for me. I want to fight for another world title, win it, and then immediately challenge Lomachenko to a unification fight. I believe if we fight again I will win. In fact I feel if we fought 100 times, I would beat him in 99 of them.’’

CHRISTOPHER MARTIN, Featherweight Prospect

“This is not an easy fight for either of us, but it is my chance to defeat one of the best featherweights in the world, so of course I am excited about the opportunity.

“I am more than ready. Training camp went great. I’m confident and excited about fighting on Saturday.’’

JULIAN WILLIAMS, Undefeated Super Welterweight

“I’m really looking forward to fighting on SHOWTIME EXTREME again. I think this is my fifth time on. I expect a good fight and to come out with a fantastic win.

“I’ve heard my opponent is pretty good. I definitely think he is better than the first guy I was supposed to fight. So there is no way I would look past him. I can’t afford to look past anybody at this point in my career.

“Even with the late change in opponents, my mindset doesn’t alter at all. I had an extensive amateur career and feel I can adjust to anybody or anything in the ring.’’

JAMAR FREEMAN, Super Welterweight Prospect

“All I’ve been waiting for since I was 13 was an opportunity like this, so it is the biggest opportunity of my life and I’m ready to take advantage. I am not nervous at all.

“This is a step-up fight for me, but I definitely feel they made a mistake in picking me on short notice. I don’t think they are going to get what they expect. I’m always in the gym training and I’m always ready.

“My reaction to getting the call the other night about this fight was ‘send the contract.’

“[Julian] Williams is definitely a very skilled fighter, but he has never been in with anybody like me. I’ll adjust to whatever he does. I’m very confident I can pull off the upset on Saturday.’’

JULIUS JACKSON, Unbeaten Super Middleweight

“Fighting on SHOWTIME is a dream come true for me. This a great opportunity to showcase my skills.

“As always, my focus is on me doing what I do best, which is going out there and performing well.

“Being the son of a former world champion and one of the hardest punchers ever is a very good thing. It adds no pressure. I’ve learned a lot from my father, who actually stresses boxing more than punching to me. He definitely wants me to box more than to just go in and exchange.”

JONATHAN NELSON, Super Middleweight Prospect

“I’m really looking forward to fighting on SHOWTIME for the first time in what is a step-up fight for me. I’ve waited a long time for a nice opportunity like this, and now that’s here I’m looking forward to being victorious.

“[Julius] Jackson is a good fighter, tall and rangy; I just plan to outbox him. Jackson has a name, but so do I, and I’m confident people will realize that after we fight.”

In round seven, Bizier knocked Dan with a good left hook. Later in the round, Bizier was cut over the right eye from an accidental clash of heads. Dan steadied himself and upped his workrate over the second half of the fight. It was that volume punching that proved to be the difference as he won by scores of 115-112 Dan, 114-113 Bizier, 114-113 Dan.

Dan, 146 3/4 lbs of Romania is now 34-2 and is line for IBF champion Kell Brook. Bizier, 146 3/4 lbs of Montreal is now 23-2.

“Yes, of course (I’d fight Bizier again), but first I want to fight Kell Brook,” Dan said. “I hope we’ll make an exciting fight like this one.”

After the fight, Bizier (23-2, 16 KOs) was disappointed to again be on the losing end of a close split-decision.

“All the close rounds went to Jo Jo,” Bizier said. “We knew we had to win those last two rounds and I guess they gave it to him. When I hurt Jo Jo in the seventh I hurt my right hand. At that point, I was fighting with one hand.

“Let’s fight again. Why not? The first two fights were close. I don’t know why, but the judges just seem to give the close rounds to him.”

Former world title challenger Andre Dirrell scored a 12-round unanimous decision over Derek Edwards in a Super Middleweight bout.

Dirrell dominated the bout ,mostly from the southpaw stance. He landed some hard flurries with the best being in round eight when he landed a blistering combination where he snapped the head Edwards back several times. He rocked Edwards in round ten as he landed some thudding uppercuts. In round twelve. Edwards had s light glimmer of hope when he landed a hard left hook that momentarily stunned Dirrell. He could not capitalize and Dirrell came home with the victory by scores of 119-109, 120-108 and 119-107.

Dirrell, 167 3/4 lbs of Flint, MI is now 24-1. Edwards, 167 lbs of Winston Salem, NC is now 27-4-1.

Punch stats saw Dirrell 225-591. Edwards 47-269

“I want to perfect my craft as far as fighting southpaw,” Dirrell said. “I was shooting the left hand. This guy has a tough, tough head so I’m not going to doubt my power one bit. I’m glad to walk away with a victory. My knuckle was hurting but it wasn’t bad enough that I couldn’t throw it. This boy could take a punch.

“I’m getting there. I’m proud of my performance, but it was a tough 12 rounds.”

“I believe he’s scared to fight me,” Dirrell said. “It’s too risky a fight to take. But I’m going to push it to the best of my ability. There’s a win on his record that’s questionable to everyone in the world. Give me the rematch. Prove to your fans that you beat me and try to do it again. Step in the ring with Andre Dirrell and you’re going to see what I’m all about.”

Super prospect Artur Beterbiev remained undefeated but was knocked down to come back and score a 2nd round stoppage over previously undefeated Jeff Page Jr. in a scheduled 10-round Light Heavyweight bout.

In round one, Page landed a right that sent Beterbiev to the canvas. In round two, Beterbiev landed some head shots that rocked Page and sent Page to the deck. He sent Page down later in the round from another hard round. Beterbiev finished things seconds later when he dropped Page for a third and final time and the fight was stopped at 2:21 of round two.

Beterbiev, 174 1/2 lbs of Russia now 7-0 with 7 knockouts. Page, 174 1/4 lbs of Wichita, KS is 15-1.

“I felt a bit sleepy before the fight and I don’t think I was concentrating for a fraction of a second (in the first round),” Beterbiev said. “I got angry after the knockdown and decided to go forward. I have a lot to learn in professional boxing, but I’m looking forward to the experience.”

When asked if he thinks he could beat WBO/WBA/IBF Champion Sergey Kovalev, who he defeated as an amateur, Beterbiev was noncommittal.

“I beat him (Kovalev) as an amateur so I can’t say much,” Beterbiev said. “It’s hard to say right now.”

In the main event of the evening, veteran mixed martial artist Ji Xian scored a unanimous decision victory over young prospect Song Ya Dong in a memorable striking contest. Ji caught Song with a big punch in the first round, but the younger fighter quickly regained his bearings. Ji and Song viciously exchanged strikes, with the more experienced Ji landing the cleaner blows. In the second round, both combatants continued to pour on the power punches with Song being the busier fighter. In the third, the more experienced Ji began to pull away, dominating Song over the final five minutes of the bout.

In a highly-anticipated matchup, Adrian Pang routed tough lightweight contender Vincent Latoel, winning by submission in round three. Pang, with the edge in power, slugged Latoel with heavy hands whenever he got in close as Latoel opted to fight from a distance. On the ground, Pang scored on a few short elbows from Latoel’s guard. In the second round, Latoel was more effective at fighting from the outside while Pang looked for the takedown. Pang then dropped Latoel with a monstrous right hook but Latoel recovered well. In the third, Pang countered a takedown by pulling a Guillotine Choke, forcing Latoel to tap out.

In the Beijing Featherweight Tournament Final, two explosive striking specialists in Li Kai Wen and Wang Ya Wei went to battle to the delight of a packed crowd. Both fighters traded explosive strikes at the center of the cage in the first round, swapping blows in back-and-forth action. Li however showcased his superior striking acumen, getting the better of the exchanges with his quickness and power. In the second round, Li continued to control the bout with his accurate strikes, earning the victory by unanimous decision and the Beijing Featherweight Tournament Championship trophy.

In the Beijing Flyweight Tournament Final, Li Wei Bin and Wang Wei put on an epic war of attrition for fans in attendance. Li opened up the fight with a well-timed right hand that knocked Wang back, followed by a quick flurry of strikes. Wang was able to counter with a right hook that dropped Li to show fans he was still in it. The second round however saw Li establish his dominance in the striking department, gutting out a solid unanimous decision victory to become the Beijing Flyweight Tournament Champion.

Michal Pasternak overcame a left knee injury to defeat Rafael Silva by decision. The tall and lanky Pasternak used his brute strength to control the action on the ground, battering Silva with a barrage of punches and elbows from mount. In the second round, Silva tried to score with a takedown but wound up in the same position on his back with the larger Pasternak on top. Silva had a couple of solid submission attempts but Pasternak stuck to his gameplan. In the third round, Pasternak willed his way to the end of the fight, grinding out the unanimous decision victory.

In a clash of fierce competitors, Ariel Sexton announced his return to the lightweight mix with an impressive submission victory over Anvar Alizhanov. Alizhanov dropped Sexton with a right hand in the opening moments but on the ground, Sexton quickly showed his grappling brilliance, locking in a body triangle and dazzling with an array of submission attempts. The end sequence came when Sexton transitioned beautifully into a reverse triangle from mount and forced Alizhanov to tap out from an armlock.

In the second Beijing Featherweight Tournament Semi-Final bout, Wang Ya Wei showcased a relentless fighting style, defeating opponent Li Gen by Technical Knockout. Wang went straight to work on Li, with a clear advantage in strength from the sound of the first bell. In half guard, Wang unleashed a barrage of strikes on Li which featured downward fists and elbows, causing referee Yuji Shimada to call a halt to the bout.

Li Kai Wen impressed with a first round knockout victory over He Nan Nan in the first Beijing Featherweight Tournament Semi-Final bout. He came out with a furious attack on Li, driving his opponent back up against the cage but after another tenacious exchange, Li connected with a left hook that dropped He. A few more downward strikes by Li coerced referee Olivier Coste to stop the contest.

In the second Beijing Flyweight Semi-Final bout of the evening, Wang Wei completely dominated Liu Xu with his grinding style, winning by unanimous decision. Wang drove successfully into a takedown from the get-go and kept Liu glued to the mat for the majority of the first round. From top position, Wang worked on Liu with sharp elbows and punishing forearms. The second round saw much of the same, with Wang completely controlling the fight on the ground to claim the victory.

Li Wei Bin and Hao Yi Jie kicked off the action for ONE FC: DYNASTY OF CHAMPIONS. In an exciting battle in the first Beijing Flyweight Tournament Semi-Final bout, Hao started off with a quick Guillotine Choke attempt but Li was able to reverse his fortune, gaining mount. BOXNATION ENDS 2014 WITH A BANG WITH KNOCKOUT ARTIST STEVENSON THIS FRIDAY BEFORE AN EXPLOSIVE NEW YEAR SCHEDULE

LONDON (Dec 19) – BoxNation will end 2014 with a bang this Friday night with knockout artist Adonis Stevenson’s battle with Dmitry Sukhotsky, before ushering in a blitzing start to the New Year.

‘The Channel of Champions’ is set to pick up where they left off with some mammoth fights in 2015 starting with the heavyweight world title fight between brash-talking American Deontay Wilder and WBC champion Bermane Stiverne on January 17th.

The charismatic Wilder is renowned for his hard-hitting power after dispatching of all 32 of his opponents and could potentially set up a blockbuster showdown with Tyson Fury in the future, who is also back in action on February 28th.

Manchester’s Fury has forced himself into a mandatory position to face Wladimir Klitschko for his WBO belt after his commanding victory over Dereck Chisora in his last outing.

February’s clash with a top 15 ranked contender will provide an appetizer before the heavyweight hitman tests himself against the world’s number one in Klitschko.

Also appearing on that card at London’s O2 Arena will be Chris Eubank Jr who will be looking to bounce back after his thrilling fight with middleweight star Billy Joe Saunders.

BoxNation will also screen what is set to be one of the greatest trilogies of the modern era when Mike Alvarado and Brandon Rios step into the ring once again following their previous duels.

The welterweight aces will step into the ring at the 1stBank Center in Colorado on January 24th as they look to conclude their feud once-and-for-all, with both men sharing a win apiece.

However, before BoxNation wraps up for Christmas the world’s leading boxing channel will show WBC light-heavyweight world champion Stevenson’s clash with tough Russian Sukhotsky.

A fight with another Russian though has been mooted with WBA, WBO and IBF champion Sergey Kovalev someone on Stevenson’s radar.

“The fight that is huge is Kovalev and me because the world needs this fight. They don’t just want to watch that in Quebec City they want to watch that all over the world,” said Stevenson.

“The world isn’t interested in seeing me with Lucian Bute or Jean Pascal – the world needs Adonis and Kovalev.”

The 37-year-old, who has knocked out 20 of his 25 opponents, has hit back at critics who have said he is afraid of the ruthless Kovalev.

“They don’t know nothing about boxing. I can say I want to fight or Kovalev can say he wants to fight but we have to deal with the TV networks, the managers, the promoters – that’s the problem. I know my manager Al Haymon is working on that but all these guys have to come together to fix that and make the fight happen,” said Stevenson.

The Haitian-born pugilist has to first get past his impending challenger first, someone he insists he is not overlooking.

“This was probably the best training camp that I’ve had. We’re ready for this fight. We’re not underestimating him. I know he’s coming to fight and I will be ready.

“I know he’s a tough contender. And I know he’s training very hard for this fight. He’s going to try to surprise me, but I’m very prepared because I know the contender is always going to try to take your belt,” said Stevenson.

“I’m going to win by knockout. Emmanuel (Steward) always told me that knockouts sell, so I’m going to win by knockout. It’s going to be a short night,” he said.

Watch Stevenson vs Sukhotsky live on BoxNation (Sky 437/490HD, Virgin 546 and TalkTalk 525) this Friday night. Visit www.boxnation.com to subscribe.

Nick Blackwell: “All I want for Christmas is a fight against Eubank Jr.”

LONDON (19 DEC) Avoided middleweight contender Nick Blackwell has promised to skip turkey and Christmas dinner altogether this year if a fight against Chris Eubank Jr can be made for 2015.

The Trowbridge man is currently mandatory challenger for Billy Joe Saunders’ British title, but expects the champion to vacate the belt in the coming weeks. This, he believes, will then pave the way for a clash against Eubank Jr in the new year.

“A British title fight with Eubank Jr is the fight I want more than any other,” said Blackwell. “He’s got the big name behind him – thanks to his father – and the public will want to see him in a good domestic fight again. They don’t want to see him go back to fighting journeymen.

“A potential fight with Eubank Jr fires me up so much. I probably won’t have any turkey for Christmas if I know that’s on the horizon.

“I’m a Channel 5 fighter and he’s someone who loves the attention of the masses. A fight between us two on Channel 5 would give him maximum exposure and would do big ratings. It’s a domestic blockbuster with a lot on the line.”

Eubank Jr’s unbeaten record was snapped last month by Saunders in a much-hyped domestic grudge match, and Blackwell, watching the fight from ringside, was well aware he’d meet one or both in the near future.

“Billy Joe won the first six rounds and then Eubank Jr nicked a few after that when he came on strong,” he said. “Most people in the boxing world knew that was going to happen. Billy Joe often starts quickly and tires towards the end, and Eubank Jr is a bit of a slow starter.

“Also, he’d never done twelve rounds before, so was obviously wary of pacing himself. That might have been why he didn’t do much during the first half of the fight.

“A fight between me and Eubank Jr would be totally different. Whereas his fight against Billy Joe was a bit of a chess match, I’d get involved with him a bit more and it would be more entertaining. There’d be a lot more action, a lot more shots thrown from both of us.

“It would’ve been nice to get Eubank Jr first and take his unbeaten record, but it’s not like Billy Joe completely dominated him or blasted him away. He beat him on a split-decision in a nip-and-tuck fight. That leaves room for me to properly beat Eubank next year.”

The reason for Blackwell’s confidence stems from his own recent form, which has been impressive, and his form in the gymnasium, most notably when sparring Eubank Jr in the past. It’s also the reason why he doesn’t expect the fight to happen anytime soon.

“He knows what happened when we last sparred,” said the 24-year-old. “I could just drop my hands, walk towards him and throw shots, and he’d try and hit me and there’d be nothing there. I was just too strong for him. He wanted to know why I was so strong at the end of the spar. He knows how it felt in there.

“It was quite a while back, so he’s probably now matured and got a bit stronger, but we still both know what happened. That’s why he’s hesitant and that’s why he hasn’t wanted to fight me before.

“He likes to go at his own pace, but if you make him work at your pace, he doesn’t throw a lot of shots. He kind of freezes. He looks really fit, and he obviously trains hard, but he doesn’t have gears and can’t change his pace.”

Ultimately, should Blackwell get the Christmas gift he craves, and should he contest the prestigious Lonsdale belt against Eubank Jr in 2015, he can see only one end result.

“I’d go in there and stop him,” he said. “I’d work his body and take his legs and fitness away. I’d start breaking him down from round one.

“When I sparred him, I was catching him with body shots and he didn’t like it one bit. He was dropping his hands and looking for a break. He was getting tired. He didn’t want to do the 30 seconds break in between rounds. He wanted to change it to a minute. Things like that stick with you. I know I would get to him.

“It would be a big statement to stop him. He’s a tough boy, he takes after his old man. If I could stop someone like that, it would make a big statement.”

SERGIO THOMPSON GETS HIS SECOND SHOT AT CHAMPIONSHIP GOLD ON SATURDAY, DECEMBER 20

LOS ANGELES (December 19, 2014) – The final Televisa and FOX Deportes event of 2014 will be one to remember, as Sergio “Yeyo” Thompson (30-3, 26 KOs) will attempt to win his first world championship on Saturday, December 20, when he faces Bryan Vasquez (33-1, 17 KOs) for the WBA interim junior lightweight at Arena Quequi in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo Mexico.

In the co-main event, Mexico City’s Judith “La Peligrosa” Rodriguez (7-7, 5 KOs) defends her WBC silver female junior bantamweight title for the first time against Guadalajara’s Salma “La Amazona” Canales (11-9, 4 KOs).

Also in action will be Silverio “Chamaco III” Ortiz (33-14, 15 KOs), Joseph “Diamante” Aguirre (8-0, 6 KOs) and Fidel Maldonado Jr. (19-2, 16 KOs).

Vasquez vs. Thompson, is a 12-round bout for Vasquez’ WBA Interim Junior Lightweight Title, presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Cancun Boxing de Pepe Gomez. The FOX Deportes broadcast begins at 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT and the Televisa broadcast airs at 10:30 p.m. CT on Cannal 5.

Fighting out of San Jose, Costa Rica, 27-year-old Bryan Vasquez (33-1, 17 KOs) has twice held the interim WBA crown, first in 2011-12, and most recently in 2013, when he defeated Rene Gonzalez in October of that year. In April, Vasquez won his fourth straight defense, handing Jose Felix Jr. his first professional loss via unanimous decision. This Saturday, he will look to stop Thompson from reaching his dream of a world championship.

Chetumal’s Sergio “Yeyo” Thompson (30-3, 26 KOs) has been perilously close to a world championship for years, nearly taking the WBC 130-pound title from Takashi Miura in August of 2013 before losing a close decision. Winner of three straight bouts since then, the 31-year-old Thompson has fought his way back to the top, and now he’s fired up to face Vasquez with a world title on the line once more. And with his home country fans cheering him on, he’s got all the motivation he needs to succeed.

Fresh from a stirring second round knockout of heavily favored Aniya Seki to win the WBC Silver title, 32-year-old Judith “La Peligrosa” Rodriguez (7-7, 5 KOs) is a popular competitor whose talent in the ring isn’t reflected in her record. A three-time world title challenger, the Mexico City favorite will defend her own crown for the first time against 24-year-old Salma “La Amazona” Canales (11-9, 4 KOs), an upset-minded challenger who has won three of her last four.

In the televised 10-round welterweight opener, 32-year-old veteran Silverio “Chamaco III” Ortiz (33-14, 15 KOs) will face Aguascalientes’ Juan Jesus Rivera (27-11, 17 KOs). Hailing from Merida, Ortiz is currently riding a seven-fight winning streak that includes three knockout victories.

Born in Riverside, Calif., but now making his home in Cancun, highly-touted lightweight prospect Joseph “Diamante” Aguirre (8-0, 6 KOs) will seek his fifth win of 2014 when he meets fellow Cancun lightweight Juan Carlos Dominguez (2-1, 2 KOs) in a six-round matchup.

Also taking to the ring this weekend is welterweight prospect Fidel “The Atrisco Kid” Maldonado Jr. (19-2, 16 KOs), as he battles Fernando Silva (11-9-2, 4 KOs) in an eight-round bout. The 23-year-old Albuquerque native added to his knockout streak in 2014, halting John Nater and Nelson Lara to make it six wins in a row and five straight knockouts.

Klitschko to defend title April 25 in Brooklyn

wklitschko
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, world Heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko will defend his titles on April 25 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

“The fight will be at the Barclays Center and we are very, very pleased,” Bernd Boente, Klitschko’s manager, told ESPN.com on Wednesday night. “The contract is not signed yet but we have a handshake deal and we are getting everything finalized. It’s a really good deal for both sides. We are all looking forward to a big event.”

“The Barclays offer was better (than Madison Square Garden’s),” Boente said. “We really like the people at the Garden. I really like Joel Fisher (executive vice president of MSG Sports). We had fights with Wladimir and (older brother) Vitali there, but the overall cooperation is better with Barclays. They are putting huge marketing money into this and that is important.”

Boente and Brett Yormark, the Barclays Center CEO, held talks about the arena hosting a Klitschko defense as the arena’s first boxing event in 2012, but it fell through because, at the time, the arena had an exclusive deal with Golden Boy Promotions to put on boxing events and Klitschko was not interested in cutting it in when it had nothing to do with his career. Now that Golden Boy is no longer exclusive, Boente said he and Yormark made a deal.

“They really want to have this event. I had meetings with the Garden and Barclays and Brett really wanted a Klitschko fight,” Boente said. “Remember, they wanted to open the arena with one of Wladimir’s fights. We are really excited to go there. I’ve been through the whole arena. It’s fantastic, a great arena. It’s one the best arenas I’ve seen.”

Klitschko typically trains in the Austrian mountains for his fights but Boente said that Klitschko, who resides in Hollywood, Florida, will train there, which will keep him closer to his fiancé, actress Hayden Panettiere, who gave birth to their first child, a girl named Kaya, on Dec. 9.

“A review on the year: The birth of my daughter, two successful championship defenses and many other achievements on the way,” Klitschko wrote on his Instagram account on Monday. “It was a great year and I’m looking forward to 2015. I’m ready to take on new challenges!”

BERMANE STIVERNE, DEONTAY WILDER AND DON KING INTERNATIONAL MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL HIGHLIGHTS

stiverne
(Dec. 18, 2014) — With one of the most potentially explosive, must-see heavyweight matchups in recent history less than a month away, hard-hitting WBC World Champion Bermane “B. Ware” Stiverne and undefeated heavyweight contender Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder participated in a media teleconference call Thursday to discuss their eagerly anticipated heavyweight world title fight on Saturday, Jan. 17 live on SHOWTIME® at 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. The two heavyweights were joined on the call by Hall of Fame boxing promoter Don King, President of Don King Productions and Eric Gomez, Senior Vice President of Golden Boy Promotions.

Stiverne-Wilder should be a gripping, intense encounter for as long as it lasts. Neither boxer is a fan of the other and, with a combined 54 knockouts in 58 fights, both heavy-handed heavyweights expect to triumph by knockout.

Since suffering his lone loss in July 2007, Stiverne (24-1-1, 21 KOs), training out of Las Vegas, Nev., has emerged as one of the world’s most feared and destructive heavyweights. In his last 13 starts, the first-ever Haiti-born boxer to own a heavyweight crown is 12-0-1, with 10 of the victories coming inside the distance. Of his 21 knockouts, 18 came inside three rounds, with 14 of his knockouts coming in the initial three minutes.

The 6-foot-7 Wilder (32-0, 32 KOs), of Tuscaloosa, Ala., hasn’t come close to putting in a full night’s work. He has gone four full rounds just one time since turning pro in November 2008, knocking out all of his opponents all within the four-round range. The 2008 U.S. Olympic bronze medalist and the last American male boxer to medal in The Olympics, Wilder has fought a total of just 58 rounds, an average of 1.8 rounds per outing. He’s registered 18 knockouts in the first round and eight in the second.

Tickets for the live event go on sale tomorrow, Dec. 19 at 10 a.m. PT and are priced at $500, $350, $250, $125 and $50, not including applicable service charges and taxes. Tickets are limited to eight (8) per person with a limit of four (4) at the $50 price range. To charge by phone with a major credit card, call Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000. Tickets also are available at www.mgmgrand.com or www.ticketmaster.com.

Here’s what both fighters as well as Don King, Senior Vice President of Golden Boy Promotions, Eric Gomez, Executive Vice President & General Manager SHOWTIME Sports, Stephen Espinoza and manager Camille Estephan (Stiverne) had to say Thursday:

BERMANE STIVERNE, WBC Heavyweight World Champion
“To be a role model to the kids & people in Haiti is all motivation to me.

“He’s fought nobody, I always train like I’m fighting the best out there.

“As far as a game plan, all I can say is ‘Don’t Blink!’. Watch the action on Jan 17. I can show you better than I can tell you.

“The belt is great, it’s meant a lot but I’m still hungry. I still want more.

“Defending my title in Vegas at the MGM Grand is a dream. Nobody will beat me. This belt isn’t going anywhere. Jan. 17 is going to be a short night and it’s going to be painful.”

DEONTAY WILDER, Undefeated Heavyweight Contender & Mandatory Challenger
“I have a chance to shock the world and I just can’t wait for it.

“I think this is the most anticipated heavyweight bout in a long time, there’s a lot of energy in my home city [Tuscaloosa, Ala.].

“This is my time. This is me! I don’t want to be compared to other fighters. I want to build my own legacy.

“I’m not your average heavyweight I go to work all day, every day as if it’s my 9 to 5 job.

“I don’t get paid for overtime so why go all the way, that’s why I finish things early in the ring.

“I don’t want anyone to make excuses to me. I don’t want people to discredit me anymore. But the time has come to change that.

“I have heard nothing but excuses for my 32 wins by KO and when I get 33, I don’t want to hear anything about it.

“I can’t let my ultimate number one fan, my daughter, down on Jan17. I’m going to fulfill my promise to her to be world champ.

“I can’t wait! I’m so passionate about this fight. I wish it were tomorrow.

“I have no doubt at the end of this fight my hand will be raised as the new heavyweight champion of the world.”

DON KING, President of Don King Promotions
“This program is a return to glory, an American return to glory in the heavyweight division.

“The WBC Heavyweight champion, Bermane Stiverne versus mandatory challenger Deontay Wilder is going to be a great event and a fight for peace.

“This is a fight to bring boxing and the country back to where it should be and being able to bring the glory back to the heavyweight division, which has been lacking for quite a while now.

“It has been about 10 years since there was a heavyweight match here in America, so we are going to celebrate this at the MGM Grand.

“I feel that Bermane will give Wilder a lesson after they meet in their heavyweight fight for peace here at the MGM Grand.

“This fight for peace symbolizes the essence of America’s creed, freedom, justice, equality, liberty and peace, which makes all Americans proud and extremely grateful. I’m looking for bringing the heavyweight championship back to America and we are doing that.

“We are bringing boxing back to the people, the people is what it is all about.

“It’s heavyweight time, it’s America’s time on January 17! Tell the world!”

ERIC GOMEZ, Senior Vice President of Golden Boy Promotions
“Deontay Wilder finally gets his chance to fight for a world title. He is the number one ranked contender.

“He has won all of his fights by knockout, and is probably the most exciting American heavyweight boxer in the last 20 years.”

STEPHEN ESPINOZA, Executive Vice President & General Manager SHOWTIME SPORTS
“It is an intriguing fight and the perfect way to kick off the New Year on SHOWTIME. This fight has been rumored for quite some time.

“The media demand is on par with a [Floyd] Mayweather fight. The Heavyweights are definitely back.

“This is one of the most highly anticipated fights in the U.S. in many years.

CAMILLE ESTEPHAN, Stiverne’s Manager
“I want to tell you what I believe. I do not like to put things politically correct, (32-0, 32 KOs) against who? We believe this [Deontay Wilder] is a choreographed career, very well done. Good job. But I believe Wilder will quickly realize that fighting at this level is a whole different universe, but by then it will be too late for him. Bermane will make a statement.

“Don’t blink guys, I really hope all the fans on this planet get to realize who the new Mike Tyson is.

“We earned this, we paid our dues, we waited a long time, we have been dodged by many for many years and blocked for many years. The time has come for people to realize that the most beautiful talent in boxing today is called Bermane Stiverne. We will show you on Jan. 17.”

“JO JO” DAN RETURNS IN REMATCH AGAINST KEVIN BIZIER

New York, NY/Quebec City, Canada (12/18/14) – DiBella Entertainment’s (DBE) world-rated welterweight contender Ionut “Jo Jo” Dan Ion, 33-2 (18 KOs), IBF No. 2, will end 2014 participating in the most crucial bout of his career when he faces off against Canadian rival Kevin Bizier, 23-1 (16 KOs), IBF No. 5, in a highly anticipated rematch tomorrow night, at the Colisee de Quebec, in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. The 12-round welterweight contest, televised as the co-feature of a four-fight broadcast, live on SHOWTIME (9pm ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast), will determine the mandatory challenger and No. 1 contender for the IBF world title, currently held by England’s Kell Brook.

The Romanian-born Ion, living and training in Montreal since his 2004 pro debut, met then-undefeated Bizier, of Saint-Emile, last year on November 30, in a bout with the IBF No. 2 ranking at stake. The fight was a barnburner with the southpaw Ion dictating the pace and controlling the action during heated exchanges of which there were many, thrilling the crowd. Bizier persevered and remained competitive over the bout’s second half. After 12 exciting frames, the judges awarded a split decision to Ion, who picked up the NABA and IBF Inter-Continental welterweight titles with the victory.

“I thought I clearly won the first fight,” said Ion. “If I were to critique my performance, I may have allowed Bizier to have some success by electing to stand in front of him and trade during the middle rounds, though I felt that I did finish strong.”

Since then, each has kept busy in 2014, adding knockout victories to their records, Ion one and Bizier two. As the No. 2 contender, Ion was ready to vie for the mandatory position against the next available contender. Through a series of circumstances and unavailable contenders, that turned out to be Bizier. Now, the two will do battle once again, with Bizier looking for revenge and Ion determined to secure a much more decisive win and prove that he is the better man.

“Because other fighters pulled out or had prior commitments, Bizier was next in line for the eliminator and I have no problem fighting him a second time. I beat him once and I will do it again. I had 10 weeks of intense training for this fight and I am ready. This is the fight of my career, so far. I need to win in order to get my world title shot. It means everything to me, and I will be victorious.”

“DBE signed ‘Jo Jo’ Dan in 2012 because we believe that he is one of the best welterweights in the world,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “He proved that he is a top contender last November, handing the touted Bizier his first defeat. On Friday, by adding a second loss to Bizier’s record, Ion, truly deserving of a world title shot, will have secured his status as the mandatory challenger to the IBF crown.”

Rejuvenated Antonio Tarver Calls out David Haye

antonio_tarver1
TAMPA (Dec. 18, 2014) – All five-time world champion Antonio “Magic Man” Tarver (31-6, 22 KOs) wants for Christmas is a signed contract to fight former two-division world champion David Haye (26-2, 24 KOs), ideally, during the first-quarter of 2015.

Tarver had been sending direct tweets for the past six months to Haye, who hasn’t fought in more than two years, without receiving a response. Coming off last week’s impressive seventh-round knockout of veteran Johnathan Banks (29-3-1, 19 KOs), Tarver has taken off the proverbial gloves and he is now publically calling out Haye, who insists, once again, that he is coming out of retirement.

“In a perfect world I will be fighting Haye early next year,” Tarver said. “He keeps insisting that he’s the second-biggest name in the heavyweight division I need him to be my set-up guy to beat in order for me to get a world title shot against Wladimir Klitschko. Haye has one-punch knockout ability and he’s aggressive. Once I beat him, though, I want Klitschko. I will come to England and knockout Haye, knock him out cold. I’m 46 and I don’t want to go through 12 guys like (Chris) Arreola, (Eddie) Chambers or (Steve) Cunningham to get Klitschko. He’s waiting for me to lose so he doesn’t have to fight me. I’m calling out Haye to get Klitschko. He talks a lot but the boxing world will see if Haye’s serious about fighting again. Tarver vs. Haye is a huge fight in London.

“I’m a star and I want to get paid. None of these cats know how to really promote a fight like Antonio Tarver. I’d prefer to fight Haye in Las Vegas but I’ll come to England to KO his ass! I have the most powerful adviser in boxing, Al Haymon, and I’ve told him I want Haye next. If Haye announces he’s coming out of retirement to fight somebody else, I’ll be at that press conference to embarrass him, the same way I had to get my (Roy) Jones (Jr.) fight. I’m a throw-back fighter who can make a pay-per-view bonanza fighting Klitschko and the way to get that fight is by knocking out Haye. I doubt he’ll fight me because he knows he can’t beat me. I want David Haye in the UK!

“No heavyweight can outbox me. They will have to knock me out to beat me and nobody’s ever done that. I will become the oldest world heavyweight champion in boxing history to cement my legacy. I’m coming for Klitschko after I KO Haye. I’m going to shoot a real-life Rocky movie with me chopping down Klitschko.”

Tarver also had some terse words for critics who complained during and after his recent fight that Banks was a weak opponent and their fight was a snoozer until the final round.

“I hit him with a quick 1-2 and then he wouldn’t stand in front of me because he felt my speed and power early,” Tarver explained. “He didn’t want to get hit with my counter-punches. I wish he had opened up and fought but he didn’t exchange blows. Boxing is the art of self-defense but I don’t see fighters today using their heads. Boxing is chess not checkers. I can box but, when I pick that lock like I did in the seventh round, I can knockout any heavyweight in the world. I don’t think I was hit with one good punch. My reflexes and timing, even at 46, are second to none.”

Tarver initially suffered a now-fully-healed fractured thumb to his left hand, closer to the wrist, postponing the original September 29th fight date versus Banks. Tarver remained in the gym and put in the proper time and effort to stop Banks.

“We created tough sparring sessions to prepare him for Banks,” Tarver’s head trainer Orlando Cuellar commented. “We knew Banks was dangerous and that he could crack. We just kept training and Antonio had to overcome a lot of physical obstacles during camp. He just kept going. He tried to do the impossible and did it. He showed a lot of movement, the ability to explode, and tremendous ring generalship. He sure didn’t look 46 the way he cracked Banks. And he’ll be 50-percent better in his next fight.

“Antonio showed his dedication to improve in the gym. We had a good game plan but he had to do everything he worked on in the fight. His timing was good and he won every round. Banks came out planning to jump on Antonio but he tasted his power in the first 30 seconds and he then didn’t want any part of it. He honestly exceeded what I expected and I didn’t realize how good a finisher he is.”

If Santa Claus delivers a contract for him to fight Haye, he may as well give Tarver another display case, as well, to store the world heavyweight title belt Antonio plans to capture in 2015.
