Thompson Boxing Promotions Closes out 2014 w/ a Loaded Show, Friday, Nov. 21

ORANGE, Calif. (Nov. 7, 2014) – Thompson Boxing Promotions is saving its best for last. The tenth and final show of the year for the Southern California-based company features a who’s who of top-tier prospects. Highlighting the 8-round “Locked n’ Loaded” main event is welterweight heavy hitter Artemio Reyes (22-2, 18 KOs) of Riverside, Calif. Reyes puts his seven-fight win streak on the line against Christopher Degollado (10-3, 8 KOs) of Monterrey, Mex.

In the 8-round co-main event, lightweight sensation Jose Roman (18-1-1, 12 KOs) of Garden Grove, Calif. looks to close out the year with four solid wins against Jose Luis Ramirez (7-1-1, 4 KOs) of Tijuana, Mex.

Additionally, Carlos Carlson (15-0, 10 KOs), a rangy bantamweight with extreme power in his left hand, will test his burgeoning skills against an opponent to be named later (8-rounds).

The action originates from the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, Calif. Tickets for “Locked n’ Loaded” are priced at $40, $60, and $100, and are on sale now and can be purchased by calling (714) 935-0900, or online at ThompsonBoxing.com.

“Our goal is always to put together an exciting event from top-to-bottom,” said Ken Thompson, president of Thompson Boxing Promotions. “This show appears to have extra sizzle because it’s loaded with some of our top performers. Because of that, it’s the best ticket in town.”

“We benefited greatly from how the schedule shook out,” said Alex Camponovo, matchmaker and general manager. “Reyes, Roman, and Carlson, if they take care of business this month, will set themselves up for bigger opportunities in 2015.”

The triumvirate of Reyes-Roman-Carlson represents a core group of prospects that have blossomed this year. Reyes is on an absolute tear, having notched six of his last seven wins by way of knockout. Roman faced adversity for the first time in his young career and was able to produce his first come-from-behind win by outpointing Luis Solis in May. Carlson kept his undefeated record in check and captured the vacant WBC Latino title earlier in the year.

“All three answered the bell this year,” Camponovo said. “Each flourished under different sets of challenging circumstances and that’s what you want to see.”

Additionally on “Locked n’ Loaded”

Junior lightweight prospect Erick Ituarte (8-1-1, 1 KO) of Los Angeles takes on Jesus Angulo (3-5, 2 KOs) of Nuevo Laredo, Mex. in a fight scheduled for 6-rounds.

A fifth bout will be added at a later date. Opponent information will be announced separately.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m, and the first bell rings at 7:45 p.m. The Doubletree Hotel is located at 222 N Vineyard Ave, Ontario, CA 91764 and can be reached at (909) 937-0900.

“Locked n’ Loaded” is presented by Thompson Boxing Promotions and sponsored by Lucas Oil, in association with KCAL 96.7 FM Rocks!, KOLA 99.9 FM, and LATV Networks.

BERNARD HOPKINS & SERGEY KOVALEV FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

bernard_hopkins_interview
BERNARD HOPKINS, IBF & WBA Light Heavyweight World Champion

“When I hear or read or get asked a question like, ‘you didn’t have to take this fight, you could have taken a different fight,’ I think, have you paid attention to my career?

“This isn’t about being an athlete, a boxer or whatever it is. This is something separate. Me as a man, I’ve been there since 1965. I have been special ever since.

“When you’re dealing with the spirit, that I carry with me, from my personal life to here. All of that comes together in the ring. An opponent, he can be fast, slick or a puncher, you have to face all of these intangibles that I bring to the ring.

“I don’t mind putting my wits up against anyone’s wits today. I’m so calm and relaxed. I still have that hunger to prove myself.

“Psychological warfare, you will never win against me. Everyone on this side [points to Kovalev’s side of dais] knows you’re never going to win. I don’t care who’s sitting over there.

“When I step into that ring I’m at war with everybody.

“I have no secrets. I’m one of the cleanest athletes that has ever been in any sport. Remind yourself every now and then who you’re dealing with. Then you can say, ‘I asked him that 15 years ago.’

“It doesn’t disappoint me when I hear people say ‘He didn’t have to take this fight.’ What do you think? I’m a charity case? I’ve been wise to figure this out.

“Sergey wants to do what every fighter and athlete wants to do, put the best against the best. They want to fight the best. I’m not going to be in this game fighting nobodies.

“I know the ring like I know this building [Caesar’s Atlantic City], but that’s not because I’ve been here a bunch of times. It’s because I pay attention to everyone and everything. I believe at looking people in the eye and learning everything I need to know about them.

“I’m still calm and relaxed now, but I still have the hunger to prove myself. Sergey says he wants a fair fight. [To Sergey] You’re the Krusher, you make your own fair fight.

“John David Jackson says he knows everything there is to know about me. Sergey is the student. I’m not fighting John. But how can a teacher teach with credibility when the teacher has all F’s? How can a teacher teach a student to have all A’s when he has an F? I guarantee John did not show our fight to Sergey.”

SERGEY KOVALEV, WBO Light Heavyweight World Champion

“All roads lead to this fight. This is a huge fight in my career and in my life.

“Bernard Hopkins is a legend. He is a professor of professional boxing. This fight is dangerous for me but this fight is also dangerous for him because of me.

“November 8th on HBO in Atlantic City will be a great show and a really interesting fight. I hope that this fight will be very fair and honest.

“In the beginning of my career, I was ready to fight anywhere at anytime. No one knew me in America and I built my career from zero. I fought any place, any opponent.

“I only understand about 10 percent of what Hopkins says. He speaks in American English and slang. It’s probably a good thing because it doesn’t bother me.

“After he fights me, he can leave boxing and become a one man show in the theater or comedy. He is a great talker.

“It would be different if we fought in Russia and I could fully explain myself and what I want to say and he had what he was saying interpreted.

“The way someone explained to me what he said. He is saying interesting things.

“I understand that he is sure of himself 100 percent, and that is a good thing, but I am going to win on Saturday night.”

SADAM ALI, Undefeated Welterweight Contender

“I am very excited to be on the undercard with Hopkins and Kovalev. Every time I’m on a card with Hopkins, he is making history and it motivates me.

“I want to thank all the promoters for getting back together because that is the most important thing.

“I am ready to put on a show. Everyone has the chance to put on a show. I have been boxing for 18 years and this is my time.”

LUIS CARLOS ABREGU, Welterweight Contender

“I want to thank Sadam Ali and his team. They are good people. This is a sport. In the fight we are going to come to work and it will be a fight. After that we will go back to being friends again.

“You all know my style. I’m here to give the fans a great fight. Let’s put it all together and may the best man win.

“Now there isn’t much more to say. Lets leave it for Saturday night.”

NAAZIM RICHARDSON, Hopkins’ Trainer

“There’s not too much we can say about Bernard Hopkins that hasn’t already been said.

“This fight will put ‘The Alien’ in the Hall of Fame. ‘The Executioner’ is already in there. He is not only he oldest boxing champion he is the oldest champion in any sport. We can’t even reduce him to boxing any more, he’s no longer just ours.

“I’ve seen this man face punchers before. I’ve seen him face everything except for ‘fan man.’

“Come out and see one of the greatest athletes of all time. ‘The Executioner’, ‘The Alien’, ‘B-Hop’ or whatever your favorite segment was in his career.

“I don’t want anyone to declaw or defang Kovalev. I don’t want to hear it was this or that, or that the mind game of Bernard was too much for him. You all watch this kid. There’s no excuse for this man not to come out and do what he’s been doing.”

JOHN DAVID JACKSON, Kovalev’s Trainer

“Boxing needs fights like this. I respect Bernard and what he has accomplished in his career and I respect this young man Kovalev for what he has accomplished in his young career. He is going to go on to bigger and better things.

“It’s fights like these that keep boxing alive, with the veteran warrior and a young warrior willing to fight each other.

“The talking is done, the fight plan is together and every stone has been turned.”

EGIS KLIMAS, Kovalev’s Manager

“I want to thank Sergey for being a good person. It’s fights like these that keep boxing alive. He wants to take the old man’s title.

“It is a fight that people need to see in boxing. They could have chosen other fights. This is what boxing needs. I am respecting this man for what he’s accomplished.”

OSCAR DE LA HOYA, President & Founder of Golden Boy Promotions

“This is the premiere event for the year in boxing. The beauty about this is that it could easily have been on pay-per-view, but its not it’s live on HBO.

“It’s the biggest fight of the year and all of the parties involved stepped up to the plate and it is going to be a highly anticipated event.

“Bernard is a future Hall of Famer who is shattering records left and right. Talk about perseverance, never giving up and fighting for what’s right.

“You can go on and on about what a perfect example of an athlete he is. He eats, sleeps, and breathes boxing. Bernard Hopkins is in a class of his own. We are never going to see another Hopkins in our lifetime, that’s how special he is and I’m not just saying that because he knocked me out.

“There is something about Hopkins psychological game plan. It puts you in a trance. It caught me by surprise. That is what Hopkins is. We know he is physically strong, fast and agile, but here there is nobody like him.

“Having the privilege to step into the ring with Bernard Hopkins is an experience that is impossible to prepare for. How are you going to deal with his brain power, mind and his plan A, B, C?”

KATHY DUVA, CEO of Main Events

“Sergey will enter the ring with one belt and wants to leave with three. He has an electrifying presence in the ring and I have no doubt he is going to give us a show.

“These are two great fighters. Bernard is a great fighter. There is no other way to describe him. I know what this legacy means to him. Taking this fight at this point in his life proves that.

“We have put together a card from top to bottom that should be entertaining. We wanted to make sure we stacked the card from top to bottom.

“Atlantic City is not out. This is a perfect example of If you bring the best fights to Atlantic City the people are going to be interested It’s been a little bit of a dry spell for us in Atlantic City. Maybe it’s an omen but Larry Hazzard was reappointed commissioner and we go this great championship fight right here on our doorstep.

“I want to thank the fighters. When you can get guys to fight that are taking chances and making fights happen that fans want to see, that is the best scenario possible for the sport.

“Bernard has been a fighter in Atlantic City for a long time, a lot longer than he probably wants to remember. I commend him for taking this fight and bringing it to Atlantic City.”

CARL MORETTI, Vice President of Boxing Operations for Top Rank

“You don’t want to say the opening fight is going to steal the show. This kind of fight is experience versus youth.

“In the welterweight division any fight you can make is a good fight because it always leads to something great. We look forward to making fights like this.

“Luis Carlos Abregu is probably the best puncher in the welterweight division.

LARRY HAZZARD, Commissioner of the New Jersey State Athletic Commission

“There’s not much I need to say. This is quite a homecoming for me. When I left in 2007 it was not a good year for me. When I left Hopkins was headlining a big event in AC. At that time you were ‘The Executioner’ and now you’re ‘The Alien.’

“It is wonderful that this is taking place in Atlantic City. This is probably the most anticipated boxing event for the entire year. It is a fight that really didn’t have to take place. These two guys could have danced around each other for another year ago, but because they consider themselves the best and in boxing the best should be fighting the best.”

Mansour-Kassi Final Press Conference Quotes

Amir Mansour
J Russell Peltz, Hall of Fame Matchmaker
“I would like to welcome everyone to the press conference for the final NBCSN Fight Night card of the year. Two 40+ athletes are fighting Saturday night on the East Coast and I guarantee we have the more exciting one here. We have a great international card with fighters from the United States, Russia, Brazil and Puerto Rico.

Lepikhin & Junior

“Vasily Lepikhin fought here in August and knocked out Robert Berridge and earned himself a world ranking at light heavyweight.

“I saw Dmitry Mikhaylenko in August against Sechew Powell and I have never saw a fighter throw more punches from more angles. He is like the Energizer Bunny; I think he would throw punches as he was going down.

Mikhaylenko & Cruz

“Ronald Cruz is the reason we first came to Bethlehem. We had our first fight in the summer of 2011 in a make-shift tent and sold every ticket in a matter of weeks. Ronald has had a tough year. He fought Kermit Cintron in a tough battle in March and more than a few people thought he should have walked away with the victory.

Mansour & Kassi

“Fred Kassi is the mystery man at heavyweight. We could not find a single video of a Kassi fight. I called people in Louisiana who do and do not like him and could not find any footage of him. He has never been stopped. He is a tough guy and is always in shape. He wanted to wait for the right opportunity.

“The only man here who has been in boxing longer than I have is Joe Hand and he is making a comeback now as manager of Amir Mansour.

“If Saturday’s fight is half as exciting as Amir Mansour’s last fight in April against Steve Cunningham we are all in for a treat. It was a razor-close decision.”

“I would like to thank Russell Peltz and Main Events for bringing me here once again and NBC for giving the American people the opportunity to watch good fights. I would like to thank Mr. Hand for believing in me. We had a very good camp. We don’t know too much about our opponent. We are prepared for a war if that is what it comes down to. There is no quit in me. I am very prepared. I am going to do my thing, and not make any mistakes I made in my last fight.”

Ronald Cruz
“I want to thank Main Events and Peltz and everybody who helped to make this fight possible. I jumped on this fight the second they offered it to me. I can’t wait to get in the ring and show my skills. These people have helped me a whole lot. I feel great. I will go into the ring and fight my heart out for 10 rounds. I am in here to win.”

“HARDY” – A Film Depicting the Life of Brooklyn Champion Boxer and Single Mother Heather Hardy to Premiere at DOC NYC, NOVEMBER 1

Heather Hardy
New York (November 6, 2014) – Heather Hardy has garnered headlines with every punch, and rightfully so, when, as a single mother from Brooklyn, unfiltered, strong-minded and authentic, she decided to become a professional boxer. The new documentary, “HARDY,” takes viewers behind the scenes into Heather’s complex and unique life as a female fighter, single mother, girlfriend and determined businesswoman. The film is directed by Natasha Verma and executive produced by New York’s biggest boxing promoter, Lou DiBella. The film will screen at DOC NYC, the country’s largest documentary film festival, at Bow Tie Chelsea Cinemas at 11:45AM on Sunday, November 16, 2014.

“The film is a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to be in my shoes. Nothing was handed to me and I’m not ‘lucky’ as some people might think,” says Heather. “There is so much more to achieving success in this sport beyond training and winning. It’s not easy carving out a spot and making myself unforgettable, marketing my brand, selling tickets, and simultaneously being a full-time mother and father.”

A selection of the festival’s “Jock Docs” section, “HARDY” follows Heather as she works her way from amateur boxer in Brooklyn to professional boxer. The 73-minute documentary reveals the struggles of a woman in a man’s world and the turbulent past that influenced Heather to find her talents as a fighter. The film sheds light on the exciting and surprisingly vulnerable woman behind the gloves.

“As a fighter you’re trained to be guarded, but Heather is strikingly honest in this revealing film. This is not a boxing film, but a movie about a woman searching for her purpose in life,” says DiBella. “Her search for identity is sometimes unconventional and may seem impossible to many, but that’s what draws you into the film. The film is full of real life characters, dramatic revelations and edge-of-your-seat moments.”

Director Natasha Verma met Heather while on location for a photography project at Gleason’s Gym. Heather caught her attention while training for her professional debut.

“When I first met Heather, she was homeless amid Hurricane Sandy raising her daughter as a single mother,” says Verma. “She had nothing but two hands and an unbreakable will. After watching her in the ring a couple of times, I was hooked.”

First-time director Verma was raised in South Texas and is the youngest-ever Columbia University Journalism graduate as well as the youngest-ever graduate from the University of Texas with two degrees in Broadcast Journalism and Biology (Pre-Medical). She currently works as an anchor for NBC2 News in Fort Myers, Florida.

The documentary features interviews and cameos by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Adrien Broner, Ann Wolfe, Kathy Collins, and Lou DiBella. The film was shot over two years around the New York and Texas areas, at local boxing shows, and inside the legendary Gleason’s Boxing Gym in Brooklyn.

“HARDY” is produced by Natasha Verma Productions, Camera And A Dream Productions, and BK Blu Productions, written and directed by Natasha Verma and executive produced by Lou DiBella. For more information on “HARDY” and to purchase tickets to the film, visit: http://bit.ly/1vjLnbd.

Philadelphia, PA (November 6, 2014)–On Friday night, January 16, 2015, the two champions from the Boxcino 2014 tournament will be featured in co-main events as part of an ESPN Friday Night Fights telecast at the Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York.

Monroe of Rochester, New York has a record of 18-1 with six knockouts and is riding an eight-fight win streak.

He catapulted up the rankings on the strength of his Boxcino tournament win where he defeated Donatas Bondorovas, previously undefeated Vitalii Kopylenko and in the finals he won a 10-round unanimous decision over previously undefeated Brandon Adams in a bout that took place on May 23 at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino.

Petrov of Madrid, Spain has a record of 35-4-2 with 17 knockouts and has won three in a row which won him the Boxcino Lightweight tournament.

In the first round of Boxcino, Petrov was very workmanlike in defeating previously undefeated Fedor Papazov. He then took out Chris Rudd in four rounds in their semifinal bout.

In the finals, Petrov looked sensational by stopping Fernando Carcamo in the 8th round to not only win the Boxcino tournament but in the process, he won the NABA & NABO titles. The win also surged Petrov to the number-three ranking by the WBA and number-seven by the WBO.

“We are excited to start the year with Willie and Petr on ESPN,”said Banner Promotions CEO Arthur Pelullo.

“They are coming back to the same venue where they won their titles. This is going to be a big year for both of them and on January 16, 2015 they will continue their quests to become world champions.”

Mansour-Kassi Heavyweight Battle Highlights NBCSN Fight Night Tripleheader Live This Sat., Nov. 8, at 8:30 p.m. ET from Sands in Bethlehem, Penn.

Amir Mansour
Bethlehem, PA:
The final NBCSN Fight Night telecast of 2014 will feature a special triple header this Saturday, Nov. 8, live from Sands Casino Resort in Bethlehem, Penn., at 8:30 p.m. ET. In the main event, heavyweights Amir “Hardcore” Mansour (20-1, 15 KOs) and Fred “Big Fred” Kassi (18-2, 10 KOs) will square off for 10 rounds.

The telecast begins with a 10-round light heavyweight battle between Vasily “The Professor” Lepikhin (16-0, 9 KOs) and Jackson “Demolidor” Junior (15-0-1, 13 KOs), followed by welterweight Dmitry “The Mechanic” Mikhaylenko (17-0, 6 KOs) taking on local sensation Ronald Cruz (20-4, 15 KOs) for 10 rounds.

NBC Sports Group’s Fight Night team of play-by-play announcer Kenny Rice, analyst B.J. Flores and ringside reporter Chris Mannix will call the action from Sands.

“Hardcore” Mansour is a Fight Night veteran, making his third appearance on the program. In his most recent appearance, he lost a hard fought battle to Steve “USS” Cunningham on April 4 in front of his hometown crowd at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, Penn.

When asked about making his third appearance on Fight Night, the 42-year old Southpaw laughed, “I hope that it means NBC likes me.” He added, “We have a very large following in the (Philadelphia) tri-state area so it’s important to me that all the fans can watch. We have a lot of new fans as a result of my last fight with Steve and my first fight against Kelvin Price. We’re very happy to be back on NBCSN Fight Night.”

Mansour’s opponent, Fred Kassi, a Douala, Cameroon native, will make his Fight Night debut on Saturday. The 35-year-old has won his last three fights (two by knockout) in his adopted hometown of New Orleans, La.

“I’m very excited to be on Fight Night,” said Kassi. “Amir talks about how no one wants to fight him; I do – without hesitation. Fight Night is the perfect showcase because Fight Night fans understand boxing, and I’m going to put on a clinic. We’re training specifically for Amir’s hard swinging style. Bring it on, power doesn’t matter much if he can’t hit me. If he changes up and doesn’t bring the power and tries to box with me…he won’t last. Either way, we’re ready. For Fight Night fans who don’t know me now, they will after Nov. 8.”

Undefeated Russian welterweight contender Dmitry Mikhaylenko made his U.S. debut in his last fight, defeating Sechew Powell via unanimous decision in August. This will be his Fight Night debut.

“I am very excited to make my debut on American television,” said Mikhaylenko. “It has always been a dream of mine, and I thank Main Events and NBCSN for this opportunity.”

Facing off against Mikhaylenko is Puerto Rican Ronald Cruz, who lives in Bethlehem, Penn. This will be his ninth fight at Sands, where Cruz always has hometown support in the crowd.

“I am happy to be back on NBCSN again and I am thankful for the opportunity to be able to showcase my style and my skills,” said Cruz. “Expect excitement because I am coming to win this fight.”

Russian light heavyweight sensation Vasily “The Professor” Lepikhin is a 29-year-old from Chelyabinsk, Russia. The Professor made his Fight Night debut back on Aug. 9 at Sands, with a fifth round TKO over New Zealand native Robert “The Butcher” Berridge, to secure the WBO Oriental and PABA light heavyweight titles.

The undefeated Lepikhin said, “I am very happy to be back fighting on NBCSN Fight Night. I hope to put on another great fight for my fans.”

Lepikhin’s opponent is Brazilian Jackson “Demolidor” Junior, who knocked out Francisco Antonio Mora in the third round in his last fight. Junior will also make his Fight Night debut on Saturday.

The Brazilian Junior added, “Boxing is easy. The wait until the fight is much harder.”

Main Events CEO Kathy Duva said, “As always, we look forward to the return of fighters who have made an impression on Fight Night fans before, as Amir Mansour, Vasily Lepikhin and Ronald Cruz certainly did, and to introducing new faces. Our matchmakers put together an excellent triple header and it’s a great way to close out the Fight Night series.”

FIGHTING HOPKINS A CHILDHOOD DREAM FOR PROUD NEW DAD KOVALEV WHO VOWS TO ‘KICK ASS’ IN WORLD TITLE UNIFICATION CLASH LIVE ON BOXNATION

hopkins_apaloka
LONDON (Nov 6) – Proud new dad Sergey Kovalev isn’t in the mood for any niceties after vowing to ‘kick ass’ when he faces Bernard Hopkins this weekend.

The pair clash in what is one of the most eagerly anticipated fights of the year, with both men putting their world titles on the line when they lock horns in an historic battle at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City this Saturday night, live on BoxNation.

Despite having become a father for the first time, the feared Russian knockout artist has not softened from his characteristic steely disposition and has stated he is prepared to win the fight with Philadelphian Hopkins in any way possible.

“This is a huge fight for me and this is the fight of my life. It’s a very important fight. I’m focused on this. Yes, my baby was just born and I remember this, and my son has pushed me more and is a big motivation for me. Now I understand who I’m doing everything in my career for. I’m doing it now not for me. I’m doing this for my family,” said Kovalev.

“I go into the ring and I get my victory at any cost. If I need to fight, I will fight. If I need to box, I’m going to box. This is a fight. You can keep in your mind one strategy but these fighters can change.

“I don’t have any strategy for the fight, just to go into the ring and fight like a street fight. I’m going to kick his ass because he’s my opponent. Any of my opponents want to beat me. If I’m not going to beat him he will beat me,” he said.

The reigning WBO light-heavyweight champion has made it clear that he is even prepared to push the boundaries if need be.

“Anyway I need to get a victory, dirty fight or clean fight, for me it doesn’t matter. I will fight dirty, if Hopkins will fight dirty,” he said.

“I’m going to fight a clean fight, but who knows what will happen November 8th. It will be interesting, very interesting. I can’t imagine what will happen,” Kovalev said.

The journey to this point in his career has been a long and arduous one for the big-hitting Kovalev, who has scored 23 knockouts in his 25 wins.

Having moved over to the USA to fulfil a childhood ambition of establishing himself among the elite of the sport, the 31-year-old Kovalev’s road to stardom wasn’t easy.

“You never know what will be tomorrow, but if you believe in it, it can happen, if you trust and believe in yourself and you have a goal and you’re working to this goal, then yes, this can happen,” said Kovalev, speaking on his rise to the top.

“When we fought three, four years ago with Egis [Kovalev’s manager], and we were travelling all over the country in America and fighting anyone who was ready, I didn’t think that this fight would be possible.

“But I believed that I can to do it, and I tried to do it, and some very big thanks to my promoter, Kathy Duva and to Egis that they, from their conversations led me to sign a contract with the promoter – that is when my fight began.

“I waited a long time at this level and waited for this fight, a huge fight. When I was a child I had a dream, when I watched TV I dreamed. I wanted to be there and now I’m here. Everything from your head and everything from your heart, if you want it, you can do it,” Kovalev explained.

One secret weapon that Kovalev has in his armoury going into this fight is trainer John David Jackson, who was in camp with Hopkins for four years under the tutelage of the WBA and IBF champion’s trainer Naazim Richardson.

Kovalev, however, is keeping his cards close to his chest ahead of the bout.

“The most important thing for the team and for me is just to keep going systematically, and keep disciplined, and keep working. What John David Jackson said is that it’s a secret between me and him, he has the keys to my victory.

“I understand that everybody wants to hear what happened in my training camp with John David Jackson, but everything you will see on November 8th in Atlantic City,” Kovalev said.

Hopkins v Kovalev is live on BoxNation (Sky437/490HD, Virgin 546 & TalkTalk 525) this Saturday night. Visit www.boxnation.com to subscribe.

UNDEFEATED JUNIOR WELTERWEIGHT PROSPECT REGIS “ROUGAROU” PROGRAIS BACK IN ACTION TONIGHT

New York, NY (11/6/14) – DiBella Entertainment’s unbeaten junior welterweight prospect Regis “Rougarou” Prograis returns to action tonight when he takes on Jeff Humphries at Evangeline Downs Casino, in Opelousas, LA, in a six-round contest.

The dynamic southpaw Prograis, 11-0 (9 KOs), has impressed and excited audiences with every outing, knocking out all but two of his opponents thus far in five rounds or less with his heavy hands and aggressive come-forward style. A native of New Orleans, Prograis was forced to abandon his home in 2005 in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Moving all around Texas, Prograis was enrolled in six different high schools before graduating and finally settling in Houston. Looking for a way to take out his frustration, Prograis embarked on an amateur boxing campaign that culminated with a 62-8 record over a four-year span. Given his relentless approach inside the ropes, Prograis’ father gave him the nickname “Rougarou”, which, in New Orleans folklore, is a mythical half-man/half-werewolf creature.

With many competitors wary of his power, Prograis often had to compete well above his natural weight, at 152 pounds. Following a trip to the 2011 USA Olympic Trials, Prograis decided that his style was better suited for the professional ranks. Training out of Main Street Gym in Houston under the tutelage of Bobby Benton, Prograis turned pro in April 2012, in the junior welterweight division. He has remained active in 2014, with tonight’s contest against Humphries, 2-0 (1 KO), from Ukiah, CA, being his fifth ring encounter this year.

“This is a great opportunity for Prograis to fight in Louisiana, about an hour from where he was born,” said Jarvis Johns, Prograis’ manager. “Now that we’ve signed with DiBella Entertainment, this might be his last fight in this region for a while since DBE will want to showcase Prograis’ talents all over the country. He likes to go for the knockout, but he can box too. I know that, with DBE, Prograis will become a future world champion.”

“I’m proud to be a part of the DiBella Entertainment family,” said Prograis. “I always give my all. This is an entertainment business and I always want to give the fans their money’s worth.”

“Regis Prograis is a tremendous and colorful prospect with devastating power,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “I’m confident that he will continue to build a large fan base as he climbs up the junior welterweight rankings.”

OPPONENTS ANNOUNCED FOR NOVEMBER 13 LONG ISLAND BOXING EVENT AT THE SPACE AT WESTBURY

Greg Cohen Promotions (GCP) has announced several of the opponents for the Thursday, November 13, night of world-class professional boxing, produced by David Schuster’s Winner Take All Productions and sponsored by Westbury Jeep Chrysler Dodge Long Island, at the luxurious The Space at Westbury, in Westbury, New York.

In the night’s main event, Plainview, New York’s Tommy “The Razor” Rainone (21-5-1, 4 KOs) will face Chicago’s Carl “The Assassin” McNickles (8-5, 6 KOs) in a 10-round battle for the USBO Welterweight title.

A popular “all heart” warrior who doubles as an actor outside the ring, Rainone is riding a five-fight unbeaten streak, but McNickles will provide him a good test, as he has been in with several world-ranked contenders.

In the main supporting bout, Kildare, Ireland’s “Hurricane” Dennis Hogan (19-0-1, 7 KOs) will face Venezuela’s Jose “Bam Bam” Rodriguez-Berrio (21-6, 13 KOs) in a junior middleweight eight-rounder. The buzz around Hogan is that he is a star in the making and the fight against Rodriguez-Berrio will be his first outside his adopted homeland of Australia.

In a very special six-round, non-title women’s super-fight between reigning champions, Brooklyn’s WBO World Female Lightweight Champion, Amanda “The Real Deal” Serrano (21-1-1, 16 KOs), will take on Cleveland’s WIBA World Featherweight champion Carla Torres (4-2).

On the undercard, undefeated heavyweight KO artist Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller (9-0-1, 9 KOs) will face Rodricka Ray (5-7-1, 2 KOs) in a heavyweight six-rounder; Eduardo Martinez (3-0, 1 KO) of Illinois will go against Millville, New Jersey’s Joshua Reyes (5-3, 2 KOs) in a featherweight six; Rich “Brazil” Neves (7-1-1, 3 KOs) of New York will take on Philadelphia’s Maurice Amaro (2-7, 1 KO) in a middleweight four; Westbury’s own Dave Meloni (0-1,) will battle Felip Nazario (0-4) of the Bronx in a super featherweight four; Philadelphia lightweight Samuel Teah (4-1, 2 KOs) will go four against Brooklyn’s Ian James (3-8-1, 1 KO). and junior middleweight Peter Dobson (1-0) will face Anton Williamson (1-1) of New Rochelle, New York in a four-rounder.

An opponent is still being sought for Chicago welterweight Kenneth Sims Jr (3-0, 2 KOs).

Tickets for Boxing at The Space at Westbury are priced at $150 golden ringside, $100 ringside and $50 general admission and are available at Ticketmaster.com, all Ticketmaster locations, thespaceatwestbury.com, The Space at Westbury Box Office: (516) 283-5566, or by calling the GCP office: (212) 851-6425.

The Space at Westbury was born as the Westbury Movie Theater on November 10, 1927, opening its doors to an audience that marveled at the beauty of its Tudor style inspired auditorium. The feature for opening night was “Hula” starring Clara Bow. On the stage, The University of Maryland Collegian’s Band thrilled the audience with a spectacular performance. On Friday, November 11, 1927 to celebrate Armistice Day, “Beau Geste” starring Ronald Coleman was screened.

The Westbury Theatre was one of six theaters built by Salvatore Calderone in Nassau County, Long Island. The theater flourished as a single screen house until it was twinned in the late 1970’s. As patronage decreased, the theater soon closed its doors. Eight years ago Cyrus Hakakian and his partners saved the Westbury Theater from demolition. Bernard Hopkins: Too Great for a Single Era

bernard-hopkins_2
PHILADELPHIA (Nov. 5) – When 49-year old WBA and IBF Light Heavyweight World Champion Bernard “The Alien” Hopkins (55-6-2, 32 KOs) faces 31-year old WBO Light Heavyweight Champion Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (25-0-1, 23 KOs) in a unification battle on Saturday, November 8 in Atlantic City, he will bring more than a pair of gloved fists. Hopkins brings almost 30 years of history with him.

The continuing success of “The Alien” can make it easy to forget just how long Hopkins has been a part of the professional boxing landscape.

Hopkins was born in 1965 and has seen:

Nine U.S. Presidents (Johnson, Nixon. Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush and Obama)

The world’s population more than double, from 3.3 billion to over 7 billion

The average price of gas rise from 31 cents a gallon all the way up to three dollars and thirty-five cents

A 23-year-old Hopkins turned professional in October 1988. How long ago was that?

Sergey Kovalev was only five years old

Mike Tyson was Ring Magazine’s top fighter in the world pound-for-pound

Ronald Regan was President of the United States

“Rain Man” was the top film of the year

Hopkins earned his first world title shot, a loss to Roy Jones Jr. in May 1993. At that same time:

Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. was boxing’s pound-for-pound king

Mike Tyson was a prisoner in Indiana

The USSR had collapsed

“The Bridges of Madison County” topped the New York Times bestseller list

Hopkins began his historic reign as middleweight champion with a seventh-round stoppage of Segundo Mercado for the IBF crown in May, 1995, the same time that:

Pernell Whitaker followed Chavez Sr. as the pound-for-pound king while Hopkins quietly built his case

Whitney Houston graced the cover of Ebony magazine

Montell Jordan’s “This is How We Do It” sat atop the music charts

Today’s pop sensations Justin Bieber and Harry Styles were only one-year-old and Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez were just two

2001 was a banner year for Hopkins as he earned a place in the middleweight unification tournament. He defeated Keith Holmes for the WBC crown in April and set his sights on WBA Champion Felix Trinidad in September at Madison Square Garden. Their classic encounter was delayed two weeks by the events of 9/11, the then-36 year old Hopkins memorably stopped “Tito” in 12 rounds and tied Carlos Monzon’s record for consecutive title defenses at 14. Hopkins did this while:

A 17-year old Sergey Kovalev won the Russian Junior Championships Silver Medal at middleweight

Hasim Rahman was the heavyweight champion of the world after knocking out Lennox Lewis

The second George Bush had been president for less than a year

“The West Wing” won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series

The year 2004 would be memorable for Hopkins as he rose to the top of the pound-for-pound ranks following Antonio Tarver’s defeat of Jones and in September knocked out Oscar De La Hoya in the ninth round to become the first person to unify four titles in any weight class while at the same time:

Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez had just fought to a draw in their first of four fights

An electric young speaker at the year’s Democratic National Convention named Barack Obama would be elected to the U.S. Senate just months later

LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony and Dwayne Wade had all just finished their rookie seasons in the NBA

Michael Phelps won six gold medals in swimming while competing in his first Olympic games

Hopkins finally lost the middleweight crown in 2005 and, at age 41, decided to jump two weight classes to start the next phase of his career. In June 2006, he defeated Antonio Tarver for the Ring Magazine Light Heavyweight title.

In 2009, Sergey Kovalev would turn professional with a first round knockout. By this time, Hopkins had already fought 56 times professionally.

In May 2011, Hopkins defeated Jean Pascal for the Ring Magazine and WBC Light Heavyweight titles. At age 46, Hopkins broke George Foreman’s record and became the oldest world champion in boxing history.

Throughout the Philadelphia-native and five-time world champion’s illustrious career, only one major sports team from Philadelphia has won a championship, the 2008 Phillies.

In the summer on 2014, Hopkins watched former foes De La Hoya, Trinidad, and Calzaghe go into the International Boxing Hall of Fame together.

Then, he signed to fight Kovalev.

Bernard Hopkins belongs to history even as he keeps making it.

Here’s what Stevenson, Bizier, Dan, Beterbiev and Page had to say on Wednesday:

ADONIS STEVENSON, WBC and The Ring Magazine Light Heavyweight World Champion

“My hand has healed from the injury when I fought Fonfara. I’m healthy and I’m ready to go.

“Going 12 rounds was a good experience for me. I train for 12 rounds in the gym. Sometimes it’s good to go the distance and get the experience.

“Everybody brings their A-game because I’m the champ.

“I know I’m the king of the light heavyweight division and I know that everyone wants to take my belt. I’m going to train very hard.

“Sukhotskiy is a tough guy and he’s hoping to surprise me. I’ll prepare, my hands will be perfect and it will be a short night on SHOWTIME.”

JO JO DAN, Once-Beaten Welterweight Contender

“I’m hoping to fight with Kell Brook, but I’m concentrating 100 percent on the fight with Kevin Bizier. I’ve been waiting for this fight since I started boxing.

“I know he’s learned some things and has more experience since our first fight. But I also know him better now than when we first fought, so I think it’s going to be an exciting fight.

“If the knockout comes, it’s comes, but I always prepare for 12 rounds. If the chance is there, I won’t miss it. But that doesn’t mean we aren’t preparing for 12 rounds.

“I train 100 percent and I’m sure he’ll be in the best shape of his life. We’re looking to make the fight of the year in Quebec.”

KEVIN BIZIER, Once-Beaten Welterweight Contender

“If I want to win the world championship then I need to prepare for the best and the toughest fight of my life against [Jo Jo] Dan.

“It puts a little more pressure knowing that I could fight for a title if I win in December. But I’m focused on Dan and no one else. I’m just focusing on boxing. I’m not worried about stopping him.

“I learned to be more relaxed after our first fight. In the first fight I was going for the KO. I’m going to try to be more relaxed and use my jab this time around.”

ARTUR BETERBIEV, Former Amateur Standout And Undefeated Light Heavyweight

“I’m not worried about getting another knockout. It all depends on the strategy of the fight. I’m going to fight until the last round.

“With [Tavoris] Cloud I was preparing for 12 rounds and I could never have predicted that I would only box for four minutes. I was just doing my job and that’s what happened.

“I’m going to be more motivated for this fight because he’s undefeated. Every fight I go in the ring thinking that I’ve already lost to my opponent before. That way I won’t take my opponent lightly.

“The amateur career helped and I hope it will help me for the rest of my life. But at the same time I need to progress. I have a lot to learn in professional boxing and I’m looking forward to it.”

JEFF PAGE JR., Undefeated Light heavyweight

“No, I don’t think he’s overrated. He had a great amateur background and he went to the Olympics twice. He has beaten a lot of good fighters and he just beat Tavoris Cloud, so I think he’s a tough opponent.

“I have great hand speed and great footwork, but I know I can’t run from him like everyone else has. I’m ready to exchange – I have great power myself.

“I think him and his team are underestimating me, but I’m going to use that to my advantage. I’m going to come in and show him right away that I’m there to win, that I’m not an opponent.

“Being an underdog is absolutely a motivator for me. Everybody back home is going to be watching. If I win this fight big things are going to start happening for me and my team. Everyone will know who I am.

“I think my experience helps. He’s had a lot of amateur fights, but amateur and pro fights are a lot different. I’ve trained with a lot guys – I’ve been to Vegas, I’ve been to Chicago – and I’m getting ready to go to Big Bear. I have a lot of experience and I plan to use it.

“I train for knockouts but I’m ready to 10 rounds.”

SHOWTIME BOXING TO CLOSE OUT 2014 WITH ADONIS STEVENSON TITLE DEFENSE AGAINST TOP-10 RANKED CONTENDER DMITRY SUKHOTSKIY FRIDAY, DEC. 19 FROM PEPSI COLISEUM IN QUEBEC, CANADA

Adonis Stevenson
NEW YORK (Nov. 5, 2014)–-SHOWTIME Sports will close out its 2014 boxing calendar with the return of WBC and The Ring Magazine Light Heavyweight World Champion Adonis “Superman” Stevenson as he defends his title against top-10 ranked Russian challenger Dmitry “The Hunter” Sukhotskiy in the main event of a SHOWTIME BOXING: Special Edition on Friday, Dec. 19, LIVE on SHOWTIME at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

Stevenson will once again headline in his adopted home province of Quebec for his ninth consecutive fight and his fourth world title defense. The showdown will originate from Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec City and is presented by Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM) in association with Mise-O-Jeu and Videotron.

In the co-feature of the stacked quadrupleheader, former world title challenger and super middleweight contender Andre Dirrell (23-1, 16 KOs) will return to SHOWTIME for the first time since appearing in the Super Six World Boxing Classic in 2010. Dirrell will face an opponent to be announced in the super middleweight division.

Once-beaten Kevin Bizier (23-1, 16 KOs) will face the only man to defeat him, fellow welterweight contender Jo Jo Dan (33-2, 18 KOs), in a rematch of their 2013 split-decision showdown. The winner of Bizier-Dan II, a 12-round welterweight bout, will determine the mandatory challenger to IBF Welterweight World Champion Kell Brook.

In the opening bout of the telecast, undefeated light heavyweight contender and two-time Russian Olympian Artur Beterbiev (6-0, 6 KOs) will face fellow unbeaten Jeff Page Jr. (15-0, 10 KOs) in a 10-round 175-pound bout.

The 37-year-old Stevenson (24-1, 20 KOs) is coming off a hard-fought unanimous decision victory against Andrzej Fonfara in his SHOWTIME debut this past May 24 in which the champion was knocked down for just the second time in his career. Stevenson started strong, scoring two early knockdowns of his own and was cruising to an easy win until Fonfara battled back and floored the champ in the ninth round. The two went toe-to-toe from then until the final bell, with Stevenson prevailing with a convincing victory.

Stevenson, one of the most exciting and destructive fighters in boxing, had a breakout year in 2013. He won the WBC crown with a first-round knockout of Chad Dawson and then followed up that performance with two successful title defenses, against Tavoris Cloud and Tony Bellew, to close out one of the most impressive campaigns of the year.

Now, the Haitian-born slugger will face the 33-year-old Sukhotskiy (22-2, 16 KOs), a former world title challenger currently ranked No. 7 by the WBC and WBO, and No. 8 by the WBA. Sukhotskiy challenged for the WBO Light Heavyweight World Championship against then-champ Juergen Braehmer in 2009 and lost in the champ’s hometown in Germany.

Sukhotskiy, who has never been stopped, is currently riding a four-fight winning streak that features three knockouts. He’s just one fight removed from a career-best win, a fifth-round TKO of former world title challenger Eduard Gutknecht, and owns a 2011 second-round TKO over current IBF light heavyweight No. 1 contender Nadjib Mohammedi.

Ranked in the top 15 in all four sanctioning bodies (11th in the IBF), Sukhotskiy has fought in his native Russia for all but three of his professional bouts and has seven knockouts in his last nine fights.

Dirrell, of Flint, Mich., was one of boxing’s fastest-rising contenders entering the innovative Super Six tournament, which matched the top super middleweights in a round-robin tournament to determine the best in the division. Undefeated when he entered the tournament, Dirrell traveled to England in 2009 to challenge then-WBC champ Carl Froch in his hometown, losing a close, disputed 12-round split-decision.

In his next bout in the tournament, Dirrell faced then-unbeaten Arthur Abraham and was winning on all three judges’ scorecards when Abraham was disqualified in the 11th round for punching Dirrell while he was defenseless on the canvas after slipping on the wet surface. The former Olympic Bronze Medalist suffered neurological issues as a result of the punch, withdrew from the tournament and stepped away from boxing for 21 months.

The 31-year-old Dirrell, the older brother of WBC Super Middleweight World Champion Anthony Dirrell, is undefeated since his return to the ring, winning three of his four bouts by knockout. The switch-hitting southpaw has been called one of the most athletically gifted fighters of today. At this point in his career, he is looking to reassert himself as one of the top fighters in the sport.

Quebec’s Bizier, 30, a pro since 2008, was undefeated and the favored fighter heading into his first showdown with fellow contender Dan. The two battled for 12 action-packed rounds with Dan taking a split decision – 116-111, 114-1113 for Dan and 117-110 for Bizier. Dan controlled the early rounds; Bizier the later sessions of a thrilling fight.

Still a top contender at 147 pounds, Bizier has recorded consecutive knockouts in 2014 including his most recent performance, a first-round TKO of Laszlo Fazekas in Montreal this past September. Bizier is ranked No. 6 by the IBF and will get his first shot at a world title if he avenges the loss to Dan.

The 33-year-old Dan was born in Romania and has campaigned for most of his career in Canada. The only blemishes on the southpaw’s record are a pair of close, controversial decision losses to then-undefeated contender Selcuk Aydin – the first in 2010 and the second in 2011 – both in Aydin’s native Turkey.

Dan, whose full name is Ionut Dan Ion, has registered four consecutive wins since the 2011 loss to Aydin and is coming off a fifth-round TKO over Lukasz Janik on the Stevenson-Fonfara undercard in May.. A consensus top-10 fighter, Dan is currently ranked No. 2 in the IBF, No. 6 in the WBC and No. 8 in the WBA.

Beterbiev is fresh off a dominating second-round TKO of former IBF light heavyweight champ Tavoris Cloud on Sept. 27 in Montreal in which he floored the former champion four times in less than 4 minutes. An amateur standout who turned pro in June of 2013 and has campaigned exclusively in Canada, the highly regarded Beterbiev has knocked out all of his professional opponents in four rounds or less.

The 29-year-old Beterbiev, who holds two amateur victories over current WBO Light Heavyweight Champ Sergey Kovalev, is already ranked in the top-10 by the WBO (No. 10) after just six professional fights and 26 rounds of boxing.

The 24-year-old Page, of Andover, Kansas, is a former college linebacker. He turned professional in March 2013 and fought 10 times in nine months, facing limited opposition. Page has registered two consecutive knockouts and is coming off a fifth-round KO of Maxwell Taylor in October.

Tickets, ranging from $25.00 to $250.00, will go on sale next Thursday, Nov. 6, at 10:00 a.m. ET, in the branches of the Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec (418) 691-7211 or 1 (800) 900-7469, online at www.billeteck.com, at GYM (514) 383-0666 or Boxing Club Champion (514) 376-0980.

Here’s what the boxers as well as trainers Virgil Hunter (Khan) and Kevin Cunningham (Alexander), and Senior Vice President of Golden Boy Promotions, Eric Gomez, had to say on Tuesday:

AMIR KHAN, Former Unified Super Lightweight World Champion

“This fight means a lot to me. At the end of the day it’s going to be a tough fight against an A-class opponent who I really believe I can shine against. This is a big fight for me. I’m one of those fighters that loves a battle and that’s exactly what this fight will be. I really want people to tune in and enjoy the show.

“I look at this as a make or break fight for me. I am focused 100 percent on this fight. [Floyd] Mayweather is motivation for me, makes me work harder, but my main goal is to get past this fight. If I win this fight it will take me onto bigger and better things. This is a statement fight for me and if I beat [Devon] Alexander, then I believe I have secured my position in a super fight, but it’s all about winning this fight and looking good.

“My last fight [against Luis Collazo] helped me because he was a southpaw and Devon Alexander is also a southpaw. I can take the experience I had in the last fight into this fight and hopefully we will get the job done. Devon [Alexander] is a very good and skilled fighter like myself. It’s going to be a game of chess to find out who is the bigger and more skillful fighter.

“This fight’s been brewing for a long time, a lot of people want to see this fight. We’ve had this fight in the works for a couple years now, but now it’s time. It’s a fight that the fans are going to love. You’ve got two fighting styles, two young fighters that are hungry and also two fighters that are at the peak of their career.

“Virgil [Hunter, trainer] has taught me to spend more time in the gym, which I’ve been doing the last two the last two years to become a better fighter. Going into this fight I’m going to be a different fighter.

“I feel like my style, with speed, power, hand and foot movement, would give someone like Floyd Mayweather problems. Floyd’s a great fighter, but first we have to look good and shine against Alexander and then I think the fight with Floyd will be secured.

“I’ve noticed with Alexander that when he wants to fight he can fight and when he wants to box he can box. The thing about Alexander is he’s quick and has good movement, but he needs to develop his power and sit down on his shots a little more. He is getting better as a fighter and I know that he’s going to be ready for this fight.

“Alexander is fighting a big name and is also fighting in Las Vegas for the first time, so it’s only going to motivate him to train harder. When it comes down to the fight he knows that if he wins there will be a bigger prize at the end of this.

“I like fighting in Las Vegas in front of an entire crowd. We are looking at having a lot of Brits turn up from the UK to Las Vegas. It’s going to be one hell of a show and I want the fans to know that. It’s going to be an exciting and explosive fight.”

DEVON ALEXANDER, Former Two-Division World Champion

“It’s going to be a huge fight, everyone’s talking about it and everyone knows what it means. This fight can catapult me to the top level. I’m ready to fight; it’s going to be awesome. Two guys with speed that are both determined not to lose. We have both tasted defeat and don’t want to taste it any longer, so that makes for a great fight.

“We’ve been working exclusively on speed and movement during this training camp. I’m making sure my reflexes are there so I can come off how I want to. It’s all going to come together and it’s going to be an awesome night for me.

“As far as me being underrated, I do believe that I am. I’ve been in with top-notch guys and people are quiet about those things. But it’s OK because I’m going to continue to prove myself and earn my respect.

“I don’t believe his hand speed is going to give me problems. I’ve fought them all, I’ve been fighting since I was seven-years-old, so I’ve seen it all. I am going to utilize whatever he does to my advantage and that’s how I’m going to get the victory.

“It’s a dream come true for me to fight in Las Vegas. Every time that I was supposed to fight there during my professional career it always fell off. I said to myself that whenever I do fight in Las Vegas it’s going to be the right time, and there’s no better time for me then on Dec. 13.

“All Khan does is hit, hit, hit and move out in every fight. I’m a versatile boxer who can stand in the pocket but also be a smart fighter. I fight differently in each fight.

“I’ve come from some very rough times. When I was seven I never thought that I would become champion, but here I am under the big lights of MGM Grand. You just have to stay true and believe in yourself.

“Ever since I was seven I believed that I could be a champion and Kevin [Cunningham, trainer] instilled that in me. He stuck with me and I needed that. He started the gym and I never looked back because that was the opportunity for me to get out.

“This is definitely the biggest fight of my career because this fight determines who goes to the elite level and who has to start back over again. This fight determines who the cream of the crop is and I plan on showing people that I belong at the top.”

VICTOR ORTIZ, Former Welterweight World Champion

“I’ve fallen a few times in my career, it happens. I don’t care what career you choose to do, you’re going to fall. You get up and shake it off and move forward.

“Two years ago I broke my jaw in a fight, but I didn’t sit around feeling sorry for myself. I immediately took on Dancing with the Stars and six weeks in I was eliminated. From there I get a call from Sylvester Stallone to do Expendables 3. Why not? I can’t fight and my jaw is still shattered, so I went to Eastern Europe for three months.

“I had the opportunity to fight on the Mayweather-Maidana undercard in May but I didn’t want to risk my boxing career because I was still injured.

“No one is forcing me to keep boxing, but I’m only 27 and I have a lot left in me. I’m in my prime and at the end of the day I’m back in the ring. It’s in me to fight and I have a lot of unfinished business in the ring. I will, mark my words, be one of the greatest.

“This is a fight that I’m taking very seriously. I can’t afford to fall. I’m fortunate to have options, but right now my option is to be world champion.

“I’ve put two films aside to fight on Dec. 13. I could’ve trained and acted at the same time but I knew that I had to focus completely on this fight.

“Not having an opponent doesn’t affect my current training. I’m finally with a team that I feel confident with and at home with.”

VIRGIL HUNTER, Khan’s Trainer

“The training is going quite well. Where we are six weeks out, we feel real good about that. The stakes in this fight are enormous. A lot of people are talking about this fight being an elimination fight to fighting Mayweather. I’m not sure how true that is, but we’re not paying attention to it because we’ve been down that road before.

“The focus is on fighting Devon [Alexander]. It’s mixed emotions for me because I’ve known Devon since he was 10-years-old. But I knew inevitably that a day like this would probably come so I’ve put that aside to go about the business.

“Amir [Khan] is going to have to be completely focused to beat a two-time world champion. Both of these guys have been to the top of the mountain and have proved that they know how to get back there.

“Whoever has the most focus and implements their game plan consistently is the one who will emerge victorious.”

KEVIN CUNNINGHAM, Alexander’s Trainer

“Training is going well so far, everything is going as planned. It’s a great fight for both fighters, both fighters need this fight. It’s a huge opportunity for both guys, two of the best welterweights in the division. Both have good accomplishments and have fought all the top guys.

“As far as my guy, I think that this is the perfect fight for him. Devon has the skill set, ability and timing that you need when you fight a guy like Amir Khan with his style.

“Timing is the key. Amir is fast, but he’s not quick. Devon’s going to expose a lot of the mistakes that Amir makes, like coming in and pulling out with his chin up.

“Devon has had opportunities to prove to people that he was everything they thought he was, but he has come up short in the past. We accept that, but this opportunity here will propel him right back into that situation and the scenario he was once in going into the Tim Bradley fight.

“Right now, this is the biggest fight of Devon’s career. If he gets past [Amir] Khan, he puts himself right back in the mix with Mayweather. Anything else than a Mayweather fight for us after beating Amir Khan would be a major disappointment.”

ERIC GOMEZ, Senior Vice President of Golden Boy Promotions

“We’re excited about this fight card. The main event really is a toss-up. It is two guys going at it in their prime. It’s a 50-50 fight where the winner is going to be in a great place. This is the type of fight that fans want to see, where they see that guys are risking something. You can’t clearly see who is going to win this fight, and that’s exactly how this entire card is.

“The winner of this fight is going to earn a shot at fighting Floyd [Mayweather]. They aren’t necessarily going to get Floyd because he decides who he wants to fight, but they would have earned it.

“You’ve got four fighters who are undefeated fighting in the two world title fights so it’s going to be a great night of boxing.”
