Robbery North of the border as Judges hold Hopkins to a draw against Pascal

Call the Mountie Police, because a robbery was committed at the Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec City, Canada as Bernard Hopkins overcame two knockdowns to comeback and dominate the remainder of the other ten rounds and yet was held to a draw in an effort to wrestle the WBC Light Heavyweight title and a win would have sent Hopkins into the history books at the oldest man ever to win a major boxing championship.

Things did not start out well for Hopkins as at the end of round one he caught a counter left behind the head that sent him to the canvas for the first time in sixteen years. The shot was a debatable shot as it could have been ruled a Rabbit Punch. Hopkins steadied himself to begin his effective countering but that was interrupted in round three as Pascal caught Hopkins coming off the ropes with a left hand that dropped the legend for the second time in the first three frames. Hopkins showed his old tricks at the end of the round as he fired and landed three shots after the bell and the tone was now set for the rest of the fight as Pascal was much less aggressive and paid for it.

Over the next eight rounds the forty-five year old Hopkins put on a boxing clinic that even the best professors would not have a syllabus that would equal to what Hopkins was teach Pascal as he ripped hard body shots and straight right hands that had the eighteen years younger “champ” on his heels and having no answers to Professor Hopkins questions. Hopkins had trouble missing the baffled Pascal with any shots as he showed impressive handspeed for a man twenty-five let alone forty-five. Hopkins was so in control that after landing a hard right he stuck his tongue to Pascal. In the next round, a big right sent Pascal back towards the ropes and he appeared a bit dazed. Pascal showed little offense with the exception of an occasional uppercut on the inside that was sandwiched between Hopkins pinpoint shots that seemingly should have put rounds in the bank.

The twelfth round saw both guys go for the win as it was a close fight. The most telling shot may have saved Pascal’s belt as he landed a good right that landed on Hopkins head. Both guys fought hard until the bell sounded to the delight of the boisterous pro-Pascal sold out crowd.

The official scores read 114-112 Hopkins, 113-113 and 114-114. 15rounds.com card (off-tv) favored Hopkins 115-111.

Hopkins, 174 1/2 lbs of Philadelphia is now 51-5-2. Pascal, 174 1/2 lbs of Montreal may have received an early Christmas gift and is now 26-1-1.

“I got up and fought like a champion,” said Hopkins after the fight. “Look at his face. Look at mine.”

Clearly annoyed by the outcome, Hopkins said, “[I’ve] got no reaction. The world [has] seen it. I had the guy beat up.” He continued, “You don’t see Pascal jumping around happy. I am not going anywhere. You saw a young man in an old man’s body. I still have the fight in me.”

Proudly donning his Light Heavyweight belt, Pascal stated after the fight, “Of course I thought I won. I stood there. I dropped him twice. We’ve got fair judges in Canada.” Though he did admit, “That wasn’t my best fight.”

When asked about going another 12 rounds with The Executioner, Pascal responded, “If he wants a rematch, any time.” Hopkins later added, “The closest I will ever come to Canada again is Niagara Falls.”

Agbeko & Mares win decisions in Bantamweight Tournament

Joseph Agbeko got redemption and in one swoop reclaimed the IBF Bantamweight championship and advanced to the Bantamweight tournament finals with a twelve round unanimous decision in a rematch with the man who took the title from him in Yonnhy Perez at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Washington.

Agbeko boxed beautifully over the first half of the fight as he moved in and out and would land some solid rights and used some solid movement for which Agbeko hasnt been previously known for.

In round six, the two went to war throughout the full three minutes as Perez consistently pinned Agbeko against the ropes and landed some hard shots but Agbeko was always answering the barrages of the taller Perez.

Perez had some solid rounds as he featured some lead left hooks that got him back into the fight. Agbeko then turned back to boxing over the last three rounds as he landed and moved as Perez looked a little tired and had little on his punches.

Agbeko of Accra, Ghana won by scores of 117-111; 116-112; 115-113 and is now 28-2. Perez of Colombia is now 20-1-1.

Referencing the IBF belt now in his hands, Agbeko exclaimed. “This is my meal ticket and I’m glad I got it back. I am presenting it to Ghana as a Christmas bonus.” When asked about the upcoming tournament final with Mares, he said, “I’ve watched Abner Mares. He is a very smart kid. King Kong is always King Kong. I’m going to get the crown from him.”

Respectful in defeat, Perez offered, “Agbeko had an intelligent fight today and he won fair and square. I did not expect this game plan from Agbeko.”

Bloodied, knockdown and a point taken away, and that was in the first three rounds but Abner Mares came on late to win a split decision over Vic Darchinyan.

The tone was set early in round one as the two clashed heads and a bad cut was viable on the high left forehead of Mares. I did not get any better for Mares in round two as he was dropped when a big left from Darchinyan had the affect which made Mares glove touch the canvas for a knockdown. Round three didint get any better for Mares as he deducted a point for repeated low blows. The blood began to worsen in that round as well but it seemed to spur Mares on.

The two continued to trade heavy shots and showed incredible courage in this fight that had action in every round. In round seven, a left hand sent Darchinyan to the canvas for a flash knockdown. Mares seemed to be fighting more in combination whereas Darchinyan was loading up for one big shot. Over the last three frames it was Mares forcing the action on what looked to be a very tired Darchinyan as the both continued to fight to the end.

Mares won by scores of 115-111 and 115-112 while Darchinyan took a card by a 115-111 tally.

Mares is now 21-0-1. Darchinyan is now 35-3-1

“Our plan was to push him back because we know he likes to bully people. He has a tremendous punch. I proved that I could take punches,” said the emerging Mexican star who hails from Guadalajara and lives in Montebello, Calif. “I kept pushing him back. I heard him moan every time I landed a body shot.”

The close fight and split decision loss did not leave Darchinyan pleased. “It’s very disgusting, very bad ref. I think, of course, I won. He didn’t let me do what I wanted to do,” said Darchinyan before conceding about Mares, “He is a tough kid.”

Paredes survives knockdown to win split sdecision over Pitalua

Ed Paredes survived some late anxious moments including an eleventh round knockdown to win a split decision over former world title challenger Antonio Pitalua in a twelve round Welterweight bout in Kissimmee, Florida.

Paredes used his length and speed to bank a lot of the early rounds and he needed them as Pitalua came on late as he rocked Paredes with a series of hard right hands in round ten. In round eleven, Pitalua landed a right hand that was combined with the fighters feet being tangled for the knockdown. Paredes left eye was swollen shut but was able to box and stay out of harms way for the final four plus minutes.

Impressive Darley Perez continued his knockout prowess as he stopped fellow unbeaten Remasis Gil in round four of a scheduled six round Lightweight bout.

Perez dropped Gil in round one from a big right hand. Gil showed some signs of life as he fought back and scored with some good punches at the end of the round. In round four, Perez rocked Gil with a big left hook and Perez jumped Gil and landed about twenty unanswered punches with the last half of then as Gil was caught between the third and fourth rope and referee Max Parker jumped in and stopped the bout.

Perez, 133 lbs of Barranquilla, Colombia is now 18-0 with fifteen knockouts. Gil, 137 lbs of Carolina, Puerto Rico is now 6-1.

Paredes is now 27-3. Pitalua is 50-5

Paredes, 145 lbs of Miami, FL won by scores of 117-110 and 114-113 while Pitalua, 147 lbs of Monteria, Colombia won by a 115-112 on a third judges card.

Perez wins split decision in exciting Lightweight bout bout over Hernandez

Twenty year-old Lightweight Michael Perez scored a crowd pleasing split decision over Jose Hernandez at the Coliseo Samuel Rodriguez in Aguas Buenas, Puerto Rico.

Both guys traded hard shots with each getting rocked throughout the fight. Hernandez had his best moments in rounds four where he landed hard shots and round eight where he trapped Perez on the ropes and landed a combination that snapped Perez head back. Perez was solid throughout the fight as he had the better boxing skills, for which he displayed when he wasn’t standing toe to toe with Hernandez.

Perez, 136 lbs of Lares, Puerto Rico and now resides in Newark, New Jersey won by scores of 97-93; 96-94 while Hernandez, 135 lbs of Fort Worth, Texas took a card by a 96-94 mark.

Undefeated Super Featherweight Luis Cruz scored a spectacular second round stoppage over Wilfredo Acuna in a scheduled eight round bout.

Cruz landed a highlight reel uppercut that landed flush on Acuna’s chin that dumped Acuna on the canvas midway through round two. Acuna gamely got to his feet but took a barrage of punches before the referee stopped the bout at 2:27.

Cruz, 130 lbs of Las Piedras, PR is now 17-0 with fourteen knockouts. Acuna, 128 1/2 lbs of Managua, Nicaragua is now 14-8

Adamek stops Maddalone in five in Newark

Top Heavyweight contender Tomasz Adamek stopped veteran Vinny Maddalone in round five of a scheduled twelve round Heavyweight bout at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

It was evident early that Adamek’s handspeed would be a problem for Maddalobe as he pushed him back more with speed then with force. Maddalone got into the fight in round two as he connected on a couple flush shots. In round four, Adamek rocked Maddalone with a hard combination that seemingly had the Queens native in trouble but Maddalone contibued to fight back as he winged in some right hands.

Adamek dropped Maddalone in round five from a blistering three punch combination that was cleaned up by a pinpoint left hook to the head. Maddalone was hurt but showed tremendous courage as he fought his heart out as he was throwing wild hayemakers while Adamek was throwing a rapid fire onslaught in an effort to finish Maddalone off. He got that seconds later as with Maddalone eating hard punch after hard punch, Maddalone’s corner saved their fighter from any further damage as the fight was stopped at 2:17 of round five.

Adamek, 216 1/2 lbs of Gilowice, Poland is now 43-1 with twenty-eight knockouts. Maddalone. 230 lbs of Queens, NY is now 33-7.

Patrick Majewski vs. Eddie Caminero — 8 Rounds, Middleweights

In an absolute war, the Polish-born, New Jersey-based Patrick Majewski scored a thrilling 8th round KO over Lawrence, Massachusett’s Eddie Caminero.

From start to finish, both fighters were willing to stand in trade punches with one another, willing to get hit to land one of their own.

In the opening round, both fighter’s dug in and stood their ground, throwing ill-intentioned punches, with Majewski getting the better of Caminero — who started to bleed from a cut over his left eye.

In the second round, it was more of the same, except Caminero got the better of Majewski, opening up a cut of the fan-favorite’s right eye.

Round three echoed that of the first two, with the Polish fans increasingly getting louder in their support for Majewski, chanting “Polska! Polska!” and “Majewski! Majewski!”

By the time the bell sounded to end round three, Caminero was starting to bleed above his right eye.

Both fighters continue to trade bombs to the crowds delight until the 1:20 seconds into the 8th round when Majewski landed a huge right hand that sent Caminero to the canvass, where referee Sparkle Lee immediately called a halt to the bout.

With the win, Majewski stays undefeated and improves to 15-0, 10 KOs, while Caminero drops to 7-4, 7 KOs.–Kyle Kinder

Former U.S. Olympian got what amounted to a sparring session with tough Manuel Guzman as Ali pounded out an eight round unanimous decision in a Welterweight bout.

Ali peppered Guzman with an assortment of right hands and jabs and mixed in some nice body shots.

Ali, 147 lbs of Brooklyn, won on all cards by an 80-72 tally to raise his record to 11-0. Guzman, 145 lbs of San Juan, PR is now 7-10-2.

Gabriel Rosado vs. Jose Medina

Philadelphia’s “King” Gabriel Rosado earned a well-deserved unanimous decision over Guadalajara, Mexico’s Jose Medina. Rosado was awarded the decision by scores of 80-72, 79-72, and 78-73.

Rosado worked well behind an effective jab, which help set up devastating right hands.

Midway through the round, Rosado was able to tag Medina, who now resides in New Hampshire, with a right cross that sent him off-balance, ultimately forcing his glove to touch the canvass in order to keep his body off it. Rosado was awarded the knockdown, as Medina was able get up and survive the round.

The bout’s most exciting action came in the opening minute of round four which saw Rosado aggressively attack Medina, landing an overhand right that momentarily hurt Medina. Rosado followed up quickly, throwing heavy punches, landing two left hooks to the right side of Medina’s face.

To his credit, Medina was unwilling to back down as he stood in the pocket and fired right back at Rosado, ultimately warded off the North Philadelphia native’s attack.

In the end, Medina was unable to muster up anything significant, and Rosado rolled to a unanimous decision victory.

With the win, Rosado improves to 15-5, 8 KOs, while Medina drops to 12-9, 5 KOs.–Kyle Kinder

Tarvis Simms returned after a year layoff to score a six round unanimous decision

Kayode stops Perry in six

Lateef Kayode remained undefeated and in the process scored his fourteenth straight knockout when he stopped Ed Perry in round six of their scheduled ten round Cruiserweight fight at the Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, CA.

Kayode dominted the action with few exception when Perry would move his hands and get in a few shots.

Kayode dropped Perry in round four when he landed a left and right to the body that dropped Perry to his knees. Kayode finished the fight in round six when he landed a hard three punch combination that sent Perry to the canvas for referee Jack Reiss’ ten count at fifty-one seconds of round six.

Kayode of Lagos, Nigeria is now 15-0 with fourteen knockouts. Perry, 198 3/4 lbs of Frankfort, IN is now 17-5-2

“It was a good fight for me,” said Kayode, 27, who is trained by Freddie Roach and was fighting at cruiserweight for the fifth time in his career. “I waited a round or two to gauge what he had. He took some shots. Normally guys would have fallen after some of those shots but he had a good chin and stayed in there.”

“The body shots took their toll,” said Perry, who had never seen the canvas in his career but took a knee after a lethal combination by Kayode in the fourth round before standing at an eight-count. “I don’t know, I’ve always been pretty tough. It takes a brave man to stand in there and get hit like that, especially on national TV.”

Added Kayode: “He tried to rush me and rough me in the fifth round. He came at me, so I didn’t go with my jab anymore. I went with my straight right because he was bending to my right side and then I got him with the left uppercut.”

In a battle of decorated amateur stars, former Cuban Olympian Luis Franco defeated former American Olympic alternate Eric Hunter via an eighth round disqulaification for excessive low blows.

Franco dominated the fight as he came forward and landed the harder shots that backed Hunter up. In round two, Hunter was getting rocked by the flurry of punches. It was later in that round where Hunter was deducted a point for the second shot below the belt. In round three, Hunter was once again staggered on the ropes. Hunter still tried to work the body and landed some nice shots despite being one low shot away from being tossed from the fight. Franco continued to land nice cominations.

In round eight, Franco was deducted a point for a headbutt. Just a moment later, Hunter landed a hard right to the cup area and referee Jon Schorle stopped the bout at 2:34 of round eight.

Franco, 125 1/2 lbs of Havana, Cuba is now 8-0. Hunter, 125 1/2 lbs of Philadelphia, PA is now 15-2.

“It looks like he was looking for a way out,” said Franco, who won every round in the dominating win. “My body shots were just hurting him and he didn’t want to get knocked out. He knew he was going to get knocked out in the ninth round and so he decided to take the disqualification. I out-jabbed him and out worked him and finally got the DQ.”

Hunter, 24, who first appeared on ShoBox back in 2007 and was a 2004 U.S. Olympic alternate, was visibly upset after the disqualification. “There was just too much complaining going on the whole time,” he said. “I said before the fight they better watch out for his complaining. Ah, man. I don’t even want to talk about it. He played to the crowd and the ref. It should have never been stopped.”

Detroit Metro Airport to Add 1,000 Parking Spaces.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News May 23, 2000 | Fricker, Daniel G.

May 24–Detroit Metro Airport will hurriedly build a 1,000-space parking lot on the airport’s east side that should be ready for anxious fliers by Labor Day.

The goal of the $1.5-million project is to ease the worsening parking shortage at North America’s eighth busiest airport, officials said Tuesday. go to web site detroit metro airport

But the new spaces won’t offset the 1,300 parking spots Metro travelers will lose in the Green Lot by summer’s end.

The spaces will be permanently lost when a major road connecting the airport’s existing terminals to the new midfield terminal is built through a portion of the lot.

Besides the new lot, newly installed Wayne County Airports Director Lester Robinson said he is looking for property to create 500 more parking spaces.

The promise of up to 1,500 new spaces represents an increase from prior plans. Earlier this month, Metro spokesman Mike Conway said the airport planned to add 600 spaces by year’s end.

But Robinson and county Executive Ed McNamara acknowledged that they were offering a short-term fix for the county-owned and -operated airport.

“We’re going to continue to have problems,” Robinson said at a news conference at the airport. “The best solution to those problems basically will be the midfield, whose parking deck is under construction.” The midfield passenger terminal will have an 11,500-space parking garage. The $1.2-billion project, with 99 jet and commuter plane gates, is scheduled to open in December 2001.

The new lot announced Tuesday will be built on a grassy field, next to the Northwest Airlines hangar with a Boeing 747 painted on its side.

Dubbed Green Lot No. 2, it will be a long-term, economy lot charging $7 per day. The lot will offer shelters and free shuttle van service to the airport’s three terminals.

The announcement came less than two weeks after the Free Press detailed Metro’s worsening parking problems.

Metro has been forced to close its parking garage and eight lots about a dozen times since Jan. 1 because the 12,578 spaces were filled, airport officials said.

Travelers have scrambled to find parking in the private lots along Merriman Road. Some have abandoned cars and trucks in the lots of nearby hotels and restaurants, owners of those properties said.

Some travelers reported barely making flights or missing flights because they had trouble finding a place to park.

On Tuesday afternoon, Metro’s parking crunch was evident. The 30-foot-high electronic sign at the airport’s entrance warned that the parking garage and most lots were closed.

Only the Red Lot No. 2 was open, and a line of a dozen cars and trucks stretched outside its entrance gate. in our site detroit metro airport

Gary Rogner, 50, of Pinconning was waiting to get into the lot when he was told of plans for the new lot. “They need it,” Rogner said.

Lane Jin, 34, of Westland also welcomed news of the new lot.

“I got a problem,” he said. “I can never find a parking space at the airport.” Metro’s officials blamed the parking shortage on the airport’s success. The number of travelers increased last year by 7.9 percent to 34 million. The forecast had been for a 3- to 4-percent increase, McNamara said.

The airport will ask three or four paving contractors to bid on the construction of the new lot, Robinson said.

SEARCH FOR SUSPECTED COYOTE IN BONITA SPRINGS AREA UNDER WAY

US Fed News Service, Including US State News May 20, 2008 The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission issued the following news release:

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), along with several other agencies, continues to search for an animal thought to be a coyote that killed a dog on Sunday night in Bonita Springs.

Yeadon Hyer, 71, was walking his Pekingese when the animal approached and attacked his dog. Hyer attempted to intervene by kicking the animal, which resulted in cuts on top of his left foot and two broken toes, according to the FWC’s Lt. Jeff Rebon. However, Hyer was unable to save the dog. go to site bonita springs florida

This was the second report of an animal killing a dog in this area in the past 10 days. The first attack took place within a mile of Sunday’s incident, and FWC law enforcement officials suspect it might be the same animal.

Working with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, the United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services and Lee County Animal Services, the FWC has beefed up patrols in this area and asks anyone with any problems with coyotes to call the Wildlife Alert hotline at 1-888-404-FWCC (3922).

As development encroaches upon the habitats of wildlife, encounters between wild animals and humans are inevitable, but tragic incidents can be minimized by following a few simple guidelines, according to the FWC.

Keeping wildlife attractants, such as pet food and unsecured garbage cans, out of the yard will help keep wildlife from entering neighborhoods. Coyotes in particular look for easy sources of food and will become comfortable in urban settings if they are provided food and become accustomed to humans. in our site bonita springs florida

“Be cautious when walking outside after dark and around water,” said Gary Morse, spokesperson for the FWC. “Carry a flashlight, noisemaker and a walking stick when walking with small animals. That will help scare away wildlife simply looking for an easy source of food.” Coyotes are elusive, becoming more active at dawn and dusk, but they can be seen at anytime during the night or day.

“The FWC will deal with coyotes that become nuisances on a case-by-case basis,” said Nick Wiley, director of the FWC’s Division of Hunting and Game Management. “A sighting of a coyote does not constitute a concern, because coyotes do exist and will continue to exist near humans. However, if there is a specific local problem, as we suspect in this case, we are dedicated to solving the problem and working with other agencies to protect residents from harm.”Contact: Gary Morse 863/648-3200.
