Rising star Joey “Bazooka Joe” Veazey will put his East Coast Junior Middleweight crown on the line when he squares off against an opponent TBA. Out of action since February 2014, Melson has an excellent professional record of 14-1-1 with four wins by knockout. The Manhattan resident, who is one of the biggest box office draws in the Big Apple, was slated to face contender Glen Tapia last June at Madison Square Garden but withdrew after suffering a shoulder injury in training. In his last bout, the 2003 West Point grad outpointed Donald Ward while fighting through a stretched brachial plexus. The injury, which a ringside doctor said he’s never seen in more than 30 years of working with fighters, caused temporary paralysis in Melson’s right arm during the last five rounds of the match.

Los Angeles, CA (March 23, 2015) – Said “The Messenger” El Harrak will have a career changing opportunity when he faces unbeaten and highly regarded Chris Pearson Saturday, May 2 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV.

The ten round junior middleweight bout will take place on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao superfight.

Born in London, El Harrak relocated to California as a young teenager and had an impressive amateur career. One of the greatest little men in boxing history, Johnson captured the IBF flyweight title in 1996 by knocking out Francisco Trejedor in the first round. The Washington, DC native went on to defend his championship seven times before moving up and winning the IBF super flyweight crown. After a pair of setbacks to future hall of famer Rafael Marquez, Johnson became the first man to beat future star Fernando Montiel in 2003 before retiring three years later with an outstanding 44-5 record. With a legendary career in the books, Johnson was inducted to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2012.

A well-known rising star, Harrison turned pro at the ripe age of 16. Having been in the limelight from day one, Harrison’s in-ring success has supported the hype and he continues to improve every time he enters the squared circle. In his most recent bout, the DC based Harrison improved to 25-0 and captured the WBC Continental Americas Welterweight crown by besting Tommy Rainone over ten rounds at Madison Square Garden.

Fighting out of the Baltimore, Pettway became a world champion in 1994, stopping underrated Gianfranco Rossi to win the IBF super welterweight belt. Hailing from nearby Tulsa, OK, Lippe-Morrison’s a perfect 6-0 with all of his wins coming by knockout. Like his late, great father Tommy Morrison, Trey’s a big draw and has world class punching power. Having stopped each of his last five foes in less than two minutes, Lippe-Morrison is eager to show the world that he can go rounds if needed.

Standing across the ring from Lippe-Morrison will be fellow Oklahoman Richard Dawson of Okmulgee. A nine fight veteran, Dawson’s 5-2-2 with three wins by KO. Known for having an excellent chin, Dawson has never been stopped and scored a huge upset by besting Ty Cobb (16-3) in June 2013.

Interestingly enough, Dawson’s father Anthony Cooks was scheduled to fight Tommy Morrison November 3, 1996 in Japan but was replaced due to out of the ring issues. Dawson however believes that he’ll make up for his father’s missed opportunity.

“I honestly don’t know much about Trey besides that he’s only fought bums,” said the ultra confident Dawson. “I’m coming to bring the fight to him and control the action. New York, NY (January 27, 2015) –Captain Boyd “Rainmaker” Melson and Team Fight to Walk have started the Pushups for Paralysis challenge. Melson created the challenge to assist fundraising efforts for America’s first clinical trial to help cure Chronic Spinal Cord Injuries.

Yesterday, Melson, who donates 100% of his purses towards the trial, posted a video where he completed ten pushups. After finishing the pushups, Melson called out other members of Team Fight to Walk including Danny Jacobs, Marcus Browne, Riddick Bowe, Anthony Mason, Christan Zaccagnino, Paul Williams and Eric LeGrand to complete the challenge.

Like the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, Pushups for Paralysis’ goal is to raise both funds and awareness through social media. Each participant is challenged to do 10 pushups, call out others to participate then donate $10 to teamfighttowalk.com. If they are unable to complete ten, participants are asked to donate an additional $1 for each incomplete pushup. For example, if only six pushups are completed, the donation would be $14. The goal is to raise $5,000,000 so the trial could take place in 2015 following delays due to funding issues.

New York, NY (January 15, 2015) – Humanitarian and junior middleweight boxer Captain Boyd “Rainmaker” Melson will receive the “Heart of a Champion” award from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Sunday, January 25.

The award will be given during a special fundraiser for St. Jude titled “NY Champions for St. Jude” taking place at O’Neill’s of Maspeth in Queens, NY. More than 2,000 people are expected to attend the event, which will include a good amount of professional athletes from various sports, celebrities, and overall supporters of St. Jude and its mission. The event will be hosted by New York Rangers legend and Hockey Hall of Famer Brian Leetch.

Founded in 1962 by entertainer Danny Thomas, the goal of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures and means of prevention for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Through the years, St. Jude has focused significantly on providing care for children suffering from different forms of cancer. Consistent with the vision of Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or family’s ability to pay.

Since turning pro in 2010, Melson’s received mainstream attention in and outside of the boxing world for donating 100% of his fight purses towards helping find a cure for Spinal Cord Injuries in the United States. Melson, along with Christan Zaccagnino, founded Team Fight to Walk and recruited notable professional athletes to join the fight to cure paralysis. The past two years, Team Fight to Walk’s hosted their annual fundraising gala “Fighting for the Cure,” that helped raise additional significant funds. Veazey was forced to withdraw due to an injury suffered in training.

Crossed, a former college football player who continues to improve inside the squared circle, meets Glen Burnie native Jeff Knight for the East Coast Super Heavyweight Championship.

Fans will also be treated to a special showdown between Courtney Hartlove and Melissa “Million Dollar Baby” Wilson. Hartlove and Wilson, who both work in the Federal Hill section of Baltimore, will do battle for local bragging rights.

New York, NY (January 11, 2015) – Bernie Lenahan was a rare breed by today’s boxing standards. Not only was he dedicated to the sport, spending countless hours at New York’s Mendez Boxing Gym, Lenahan was an honest family man that built special friendships with his fighters.

Having worked with various fighters in the Big Apple, Lenahan learned his craft by spending time around New York’s greats. He guided multiple fighters to New York Golden Gloves titles and played a key role during his four years as Boyd Melson’s assistant trainer and cutman. In multiple fights, Lenahan prevented tides from potentially turning by effectively closing Melson’s cuts between rounds. He was also in the gym guiding Melson as he prepared for battle.

Shockingly, Lenahan passed away last week, leaving behind a wife, daughter, granddaughter, two sisters and a brother.

“I spent more time with Coach Bernie these past four years than any other man on this planet,” said Melson. He made me his. My heart broke when I heard the news, and a part of it will be broken until my time is up in my own body. It wasn’t just because of how he loved me and how much I loved him that this hurts me so much, but it is because when Coach passed, hundreds and hundreds of people lost something very special.”

When you see a child, you know that you won’t be judged, and you will be offered love for no other reason beyond that child just wanting to love you. With Coach though, we felt safe as seeing him put instant smiles on our faces because we always felt loved and welcomed. He made you feel that he truly wanted you there and really cared about you. I wish everyone alive on this planet could have met Coach Bernie to experience that feeling. At the end of every practice for the past three years, I hugged Coach Bernie, kissed him on the side of his forehead, thanked him for training me that day, and said I love you to him. He would smile and quietly say “love you too.” Forever and a day, I thank you Coach for this.”

New York, NY (December 30, 2014) – 2015 International Boxing Hall of Fame inductee and former heavyweight champion Riddick “Big Daddy” Bowe has joined Team Fight to Walk.

An elite heavyweight in his heyday, Bowe captured the undisputed world championship in 1992 after besting then-unbeaten Evander Holyfield. Bowe and Holyfield fought twice more, with Holyfield winning the rematch and Bowe dramatically stopping the future hall of famer in the rubber match. The Bowe-Holyfield trilogy is considered one of the greatest in boxing history. In addition to twice besting Holyfield, Bowe defeated former or future champions Pinklon Thomas, Tony Tubbs, Bruce Seldon, Michael Dokes and Herbie Hide.

Recently, Bowe met Team Fight to Walk co-founder Boyd Melson at the WBC Convention in Las Vegas where Melson received the Ambassador of Peace Award. The two started talking and Bowe immediately took an interest in the cause Melson fights for. Shortly after the convention, he agreed to join Team Fight to Walk and the fight against paralysis.

New York, NY (December 14, 2014) – Junior middleweight boxer and charitable figure Captain Boyd “Rainmaker” Melson will receive the Ambassador of Peace Award from the World Boxing Council (WBC) during their annual convention Monday, December 15 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Since turning pro in 2010, Melson’s garnered international attention for donating 100% of his fight purses and raising awareness about bringing trials to the United States to help cure Spinal Cord Injuries. Along with best friend Christan Zaccagnino, Melson founded Team Fight to Walk and recruited many notable boxers to join the fight to cure paralysis. During the last two years, Team Fight to Walk hosted charity galas titled “Fighting for the Cure” to help raise additional funds for the pending trials. Due to their tireless efforts with Team Fight to Walk, Melson and Zaccagnino have been featured by many major media outlets.

New York, NY (December 7, 2014) – Three time world champion Paul “The Punisher” Williams is the newest member of Team Fight to Walk.

A fixture on the pound for pound lists and a fan favorite, Williams had an outstanding 41-2 record with 27 wins by knockout. Williams, a two-division titlist, became paralyzed from the waist down following a motorcycle accident in May 2012. Even after becoming a paraplegic from the accident, Williams maintained his signature smile and a great attitude.

Recently, Williams connected with Team Fight to Walk co-founder Boyd Melson in New York City, where he helped Williams find speaking engagements. During their time together, Melson took Williams to Rutgers University to meet Dr. Wise Young. He showed Williams patients treated during clinical trials in China. Williams saw the patients walking following a surgical procedure that enabled their axons to regenerate. Young is planning to conduct the same trials next year in the United States. Amazed by what he saw, Williams immediately joined Team Fight to Walk.

“Being a member of Team Fight to Walk is an incredible feeling,” said Williams. “Regardless of how I felt, people were telling me that I was never going to walk again but after meeting Boyd and Dr. Wise Young, you can’t tell me anything! To raise anti-bullying awareness in the community and throughout the boxing world, Baltimore Boxing is teaming up with Unified Efforts’ “I Belong” campaign. Founded in 2012 by former Baltimore detective Debbie Ramsey, Unified Efforts is a full-service bullying prevention organization.

“We can stop bullying with Unified Efforts,” said Ramsey, whose efforts earned her the Baltimore Citation Award for Community Service. “The “I Belong” campaign is teaming up with Baltimore Boxing to help students achieve academic success by ending violence and bullying. Our goal is to continue taking violence and bullying off the streets.”

Throughout the event, Ramsey will distribute anti-bullying pamphlets and is also going to speak to the crowd on bullying prevention.

“I’m happy Unified Efforts and Baltimore Boxing was able to come together for this event,” said Smith, who recently became president of the South Atlantic Amateur Boxing Association, which oversees Maryland. “It’s been a focal point of Baltimore Boxing to team up with organizations that better the community. Laurel, MD (October 30, 2014) – A quick glance at the record of heavyweight hopeful Dwayne “Big Ticket” McRae shows a respectable 14 wins against only three defeats with eight of his victories by knockout.

After dropping two out of three fights back in 2009, McRae’s lost just once in eleven tries. However, the Maryland native is adamant that he’s better than what you see on paper.

“I was robbed in the two decisions,” McRae said of both majority decisions he dropped five years ago. The one fight I lost by TKO was due to a cut and the referee stopped it way too quickly and I know I would’ve come back to win. Truth be told, I feel like an unbeaten fighter.”

Even if he were 17-0, McRae is a relative newcomer to the sport, competing in just 14 amateur bouts prior to turning pro. However the 34-year-old grew up in a brutal environment where he had to fight for everything. Due all he’s been through, including being shot in the knee before his pro debut, McRae’s confident his trials and tribulations can help him overcome whatever doubters believe he lacks in experience.

“I’ve been through a lot as a person and a fighter. When I first started boxing, I was beating guys up in the gym after doing bad things in the street or going out and drinking the night before. Now I’m on a whole different path. I’m not getting any younger so I’m taking this sport a lot more seriously. I came from the streets but am now blessed to be surrounded by good people. My plan is to step it up in the immediate future. My manager Mike Harris makes all the decisions but with the way I’m training I want to fight in a ten rounder. I’ve got a hit list of potential opponents and the guys I’ve got in mind are the kind of opponents that can get me to the next level.”

McRae returns to the ring Saturday evening against veteran Grover Young at Constitution Hall in Washington, DC. If he’s victorious, the confident McRae believes he’ll be able to land a notable fight in the near future because of his willingness to take tougher fights and TV-friendly style.

For the leadership development, Melson will host a one hour interactive discussion with a group of approximately 40 high ranking cadets that excel academically and have peer leadership positions.

Melson graduated from the USMA at West Point in 2003 with a degree in psychology and put on a pair of boxing gloves for the first time as a plebe (freshman) for a required course. After joining West Point’s boxing team and excelling in the squared circle on an international level, he was selected as an alternate for the 2008 United States Olympic Boxing Team, but withdrew due to an injury. During his senior year at West Point he met Christan Zaccagnino, who became paralyzed from the waist down after a diving accident when she was 10. The two quickly became close and Melson’s ultimate goal in life is to see her walk again.

Springfield, VA (September 28, 2014) – WIBA welterweight champion Tori “Sho Nuff” Nelson overcame adversity and a tough opponent en route to a hard-fought ten round split decision over ultra-tough former titlist Arlene Blencowe Saturday evening at the ABC Sports Complex in Springfield, VA.

Nelson, who hails from nearby Ashburn, VA and is regarded as a top pound for pound fighter, came into the bout with a lot of confidence due to excellent performances of late. Blencowe however didn’t come all the way from Australia to not put up a serious fight.

In the opening round, Blencowe silenced the pro-Nelson by coming out strong and hurting Nelson early on. The 37-year-old Nelson remained calm and recovered to outbox the rugged Blencowe.

Scores were 96-94 twice for Nelson and 97-93 Blencowe.

“She really came to fight and I knew she was going to be tough because of the opposition she’s fought and her background in MMA” said Nelson, who improved to 11-0-3 with 1 win by knockout. “It was a good fight and I’m the first to admit this wasn’t my best performance but I definitely outboxed her and did enough to keep my title.”

Nelson also dismissed the notion that she may have received a hometown decision.

“I was making her miss later on and countering her well in the second half of the fight. Both my corner and I were confident that after the first few rounds, I was in control and took over down the stretch. Keeping my title is harder than winning it was and I always have to stay two steps ahead of the competition. I’m going back to the gym tomorrow to prepare for my next fight!”

Nelson returns Saturday, November 15 at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA to defend her title against an opponent to be named.

In the co-feature, Tyrieshia “Lady Tyga” Douglas captured the USBU flyweight title after blowing out Whitney Gunter in eighty two seconds. Douglas, a Washington DC native who lives and trains in Baltimore, dropped Gunter twice before referee Alisha Daniels stopped the bout.

Douglas, one of the most talented young female fighters in the world of boxing, is now 6-0 with two wins by knockout.

Ashburn, VA (September 24, 2014) – Tori Nelson is an undefeated multi-division world champion that earned her place on pound for pound lists. Based on her impressive success, most would believe she’s a full-time boxer that is well off financially like her male counterparts.

Unfortunately for Nelson, that’s far from the truth and every day is a challenge.

While virtually all of America is asleep, Nelson is up at 4:30 to get ready for her 5:30 am job as a waitress. When her shift ends at 2 pm, she returns home to sneak in a nap until her kids arrive home from school. At that time, she helps her children with homework and prepares their dinner. Around 6 pm, she goes to the boxing gym for 2-plus hours of intense training before returning home, reading the bible and going to bed. The 37-year-old Virginian repeats this four times a week.

“Being an undefeated world champion means everything to me but it doesn’t have the same meaning in the boxing world,” Nelson said honestly of her situation. “(Female fighters) have to work harder than the males do and we have to take care of our children but we don’t make anywhere near the money the men do. For some reason, we (don’t receive) the same recognition and its unfortunate.”

Though some in her situation may have hung up the gloves in favor of a more traditional 9-5 job, Nelson never considered that because she’s gone through far too much to let life’s daily challenges deter her.

“I’m a single mother and I have to do this for my kids. My children have to eat and one of them is heading to college soon, so there’s a lot on my plate. It’s not easy but this struggle isn’t just for me, it’s for my children and my fans. People are also spending their hard earned money to see me fight so I have to do my part and give them a show. I owe it to them.”

On Saturday evening at the ABC Sports Complex in Springfield, VA, Nelson defends her title against tough Arlene Blencowe. On paper, Blencowe doesn’t have a big record but she’s already fought and beaten quality opponents. She’s also a successful mixed martial artist, winning four of her last five bouts in the octagon.

“I expect her to be very strong with great conditioning,” Nelson said of Blencowe. “She’s probably an inside fighter and that’s great for me because (I’d love if she) stands in the pocket! I trained very hard because I expect her to be very physically tough because of her all-around fighting background and the opponents she’s boxed. She’s traveling very far for this fight so I know she’s coming to win. My trainer told me you box a fighter and fight a boxer, so either way, I’m confident that I’ll win impressively on Saturday lord willing.”

The Nelson-Blencowe bout is for the WIBA welterweight title and serves as the ten round main event of Ponytail Promotions’ “World Championship Boxing”. Orlando, FL (September 21, 2014) – Cruiserweight star Francisco “Wizard” Palacios looked masterful in dominating hard-hitting contender Epifanio Mendoza of Colombia over eight rounds yesterday evening at the Mela Room in Orlando, FL.

Inactive for two years due to promotional difficulties, Palacios surprisingly showed no ring rust. Throughout the contest, the Orlando based Puerto Rican used his technical skills and ring generalship to control Mendoza.

Scores were 80-71 three times.

With the victory, Palacios, who co-promoted the card under the Worldwide Elite Entertainment banner, ups his professional ledger to 22-2 with 13 KO’s. Mendoza is now 39-19-1 (34 KO’s).

A three-time world champion, the pound-for-pound ranked Nelson’s professional record is 10-0 with 3 draws and 1 win by knockout. In 2011, she traveled to Trinidad to outpoint Lorissa Rivas for the WBC middleweight title and she’s held the WIBA welterweight crown since September of 2013. The Virginia native most recently outpointed tough Nicole Woods over ten rounds on June 28.

Most in boxing recognize that records can be deceiving. In today’s era, many fighters pile up 20-plus wins against weak opposition. While this looks good on paper, questions definitely arise about how they’d fare against serious opponents. Orlando, FL (September 10, 2014) – From Marvis Frazier to Tracy Harris Paterson and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, boxing’s had many sons of legendary fighters looking to make a name for themselves as a prizefighter.

Some had great success, while others were viewed as irrelevant fighters that received undeserved publicity since they had famous fathers. Those who don’t know junior lightweight Christian “MC” Camacho will immediately recognize the last name and ask if he’s related to the late, great Hector Camacho.

For the record, the answer is yes, but the 22-year-old is looking to build his own legacy, not just live off his father’s name.

“I honestly don’t like when people ask me if we’re related because I want to be looked at as Christian Camacho the individual, not just Hector Camacho’s son,” said the Orlando native.

Camacho started boxing around age five and had a solid amateur career, becoming a two-time Florida State Golden Gloves titlist, New York Golden Gloves champion and U19 tournament medalist. Overall, he had more than 150 amateur bouts and spent time training at the famed Mayweather Boxing Club.

Even with everything seemingly on his side, he quickly found out about the shady business that is professional boxing.

In his pro debut, Camacho had multiple opponent and venue changes before officially facing an opponent named Enrique Angeles Jr in Distrito Federal, Mexico. He was told that Angeles was 1-1 and coming off of a loss.

Camacho unfortunately dropped a decision against a fighter he later found out had a significant experience advantage.

“After the bout, I found out he was actually 9-1 and fought for Mexico City in the World Series of Boxing. I had good sources tell me a few days after the fight that he had a number of bouts that took place in Mexico which weren’t on his Boxrec.”

With the disappointment surrounding his pro debut behind him, Camacho returned in June to outclass Jason Vera and has his sights set on one day becoming a top fighter.

“I believe I’m very talented and have what it takes (to make it to the top). I have been fighting my entire life and even though my father is the reason I’m fighting we’re very different. I’m right handed, consider myself very humble and have been told that I’m more of a puncher. Regardless, I’m not looking for any special treatment or circumstances because I believe my talent will get me where I need to be not my last name.”

Hackensack, NJ (August 12, 2014) – 18-year-old Bobby Gunn Jr. won the WBU Youth Welterweight belt with an impressive six round unanimous decision over veteran Sean Lockhart last Saturday evening at the North Hall at Eastern Market in Washington, DC.

Fighting in his first six rounder and against an opponent with a significant advantage in experience, Gunn Jr. was in control from bell to bell. The Hackensack, NJ native, who previously scored all first round knockouts, landed crisp shots to both the body and head of Lockhart. Gunn Jr. decked his foe in the fourth but Lockhart, who’s battled more than 10 unbeaten opponents, finished the bout on his feet.

Scores were 60-53 on all three cards.

“I’m really excited I went the 6 rounds got experience under my belt,” said the humble prospect. “(This) proved I’m not just a one round fighter and I felt like I showed my boxing ability. Winning the title was the best feeling in the world. I’ve worked really hard this year and it’s really a dream come true and God willing the first of many to come. I feel excellent I could fight again right now!”
