Fabricio Wedum scored one of the biggest upsets in MMA history as he made the man who widely regarded as the number-one Pound for Pound fighter, Fedor Emelianenko tap out in the first round of their scheduled three round Heavyweight bout at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.

Emelianeko knocked Werdum down early in round one and then jumped on Wrdum. Werdum was able to get a triangle choke combined with an armbar that made the legend tap out for his first loss in over ten years.

The time of the stoppage was 1:09 for Werdum, 238 1/2 lbs of Marina Del Ray, CA and is now 13-4-1 with eight submissions. Emelianenko, 229 lbs of Stary Oskol, Russia and is 31-2-1.

“I am so very, very happy,’’ the six-foot-four Werdum said. “He is such a strong man. He is a great fighter. I would be glad to fight him again.’’

“One that doesn’t fall doesn’t stand up. I was concentrating on the strikes and made a mistake,’’ Fedor said. “I will have to go back and analyze what happened.’’

Werdum may also have earned an immediate shot at STRIKEFORCE heavyweight world champion, Alistair “The Demolition Man” Overeem, whom he’s already defeated once. “I am ready to fight anybody,’’ Werdum said.

Cung Le got revenge as he stopped Scott Smith in round two of their scxeduled three round Middleweight fight.

Le nailed Smith with a spinning kick to the body that sent Smith down. Le jumped on Smith and punched Smith until referee Jason herzog stopped the bout at 1:46.

Le, 184 3/4 lbs of San Jose avenges his only defeat and is 7-1 with all wins coming by stoppage. Smith, 184 3/4 lbs of Elk Green, CA is now18-7-1

“I want to thank Scott Coker and SHOWTIME. I know what happened last time and was determined not to have it happen again. I knew I was in shape. I was pushed really hard during training. I was totally focused. I didn’t eat pizza. I didn’t eat chocolate for six or seven weeks.

Cris Cyborg retained the woman’s Middleweight title with a savage two round beating over a game Jan Finney.

Cyborg bloodied and battered Finney for most of the fight as she landed countless punches and knees but Finney showed no quit until the referee stopped the bout at 2:56 of round two of the scheduled five round bout. Cybor landed a staggering 146 strikes in the almost eight minute fight.

Cyborg, 144 1/2 lbs of Curitba, Brazil is now 11-1 with eight knockouts. Finney, 143 1/2 lbs of Springfield, OH is now 8-8.

“I was really surprised the fight wasn’t stopped in the first round,’’ said Cyborg after her 10th consecutive victory. “I know she was trying hard, but I could tell I was hurting her, especially when she was down and covering up like she was. But it is my job to keep fighting until the fight is over.’’

Josh Thomson choked out Pat Healy at 4:20 of round three in their scheduled three round Lightweight bout.

Thomson attempted to choke out Healy several times from multiple positions over the first two-plus round before locking in a rear naked choke in the final minute of the bout.

Thomson of San Jose is now 17-3-1 with nine submissions. Healy of Portland, OR is now 13-16

Tuff-N-Uff returns to the Orleans Hotel & Casino on July 2 with two eight-woman tournaments; Larry Mir,cousin of former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir, also headlines. The co-feature sees a rematch of an exciting but controversial contest from May 30, as Zach Grossman (1-1) meets Barry Prevost (2-2) for a second time.

Among the early favorites in the 125-pound bracket are Virginia’s Nicole Hess (2-1), North Carolina’s Jenn Yum (5-1) and fighting twin Jillian Lybarger (2-1). Hess, who meets Jenn Yum (5-1), is no stranger to title fights. All three of the MiKiDo MMA product’s fights have been contested with a title on the line, and Hess has delivered with first-round submissions in two of the three outings. Hess now looks to rebound from the first loss of her career after dropping a split-decision result to Audrey Pang this past November.

The winners of the first-round contests in both tournaments will return for the semifinal round on Aug. 6, while two new champions will be crowned in the Sept. 24 final round.

Saturday night at the Renaissance Sports Complex in Valley View Ohio, MMA pioneer Dan Bobish traded in his gloves for a suit as he presented the first, in a series of shows, entitled Ultimate Cage Battles. The capacity crowd was treated to a exciting evening of amateur and professional MMA coupled with the appearance of celebrity guests that thrilled the fans. UFC Legend Mark Coleman was in attendance along with UFC fighter Wes Sims. Coleman was a 1992 Olympian, UFC 10 and UFC 11 Tournament Champion, 2000 Pride Fighting Championships Open Division, and 3 time UFC world champion & was the first ever UFC Heavyweight Champion of the World. Coleman was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame at UFC 82. The broadcast team entertained the crowd throughout the night as Bobish hired Cleveland radio personalities Marty Allen and Paul Rado who served as the blow by blow and color commentators. George Michael Phillips served as the evening’s ring announcer.

In the spirit of sportsmanship, following the main event, Kyle Gibbons presented Rob Wince with a check for $500 to the Cayden Wince Memorial Scholarship fund. An emotional Wince accepted the check as the two fighters embraced to a standing ovation showing that once the final bell rings the rivalry ends and the brotherhood begins. Bobish announced that the next show will be September 11, 2010 at the Renaissance Sports Complex with a tribute to the troops theme.

Boxing Promoters Don King, Gary Shaw, & Tuto Zabala teamed up with Jeff Gibson of Elite Promotions for and exciting night of Boxing and MMA in Miami Beach dubbed “Battle at the Beach VIII”.

24 year old Heavyweight Mike Marrone 19-1(14KO) had a very big knockout win over Joseph Rabotte 8-14. Marrone a former Florida Golden Glove champion looked a bit rusty while working his way back into action. He fought in spots early and never seemed to engage until he dropped a bomb of a right hand in round five at 1:49.

Marrone is currently promoted by Don King and trains out of Buddy McGirts Gym in Vero Beach ,FL and was coming off of his first career first defeat in 2008 in Germany against Francesco Pianeta 20-0(12KO’s) who is now ranked #10 by the WBO. At the time of that fight, Marrone was recovering from the passing away of his younger brother Chris due to a car accident and took time off and now is back.

Jimi “Ninja” Chaikong got his first MMA victory over Steven Jenetis who was making his pro debut. Chaikong caught Jenetis in his guard and swiftly maneuvered into a triangle which put Jenetis out when the referee Jorge Ortiz waved it off midway through the first round. Congrats to Jimi Ninja for his first win in over 10 years of professional fighting and breaking his back along the way.. literally in 2001.

In a female boxing attraction Marianne Chubirka 5-4(3KO) won a majority decision over Deneise Jacobs who was making her debut. Churika and Jacobs engaged often with Chukirka landing the heavier shots often finding a home for the overhand right with a come forward style. The cards read 38-38 37-39 40-36.

MMA- Channing Ward won by triangle choke over Danceton Holcom both making pro debut.

Luis Cruz 1-0 won a unanimous decision victory over a very game Frederico Vega 1-1(1KO) both from Puerto Rico. The two fought hard from bell to bell often slugging over boxing. Cruz who is promoted by long time promoter Tuto Zabala and showed promise in his first fight for his new promoter.

In a MMA bout Sam Jones improved to 2-0 with a unanimous decision over Guillermo Marin who was making his debut.

In an action packed light welterweight matchup Roberto Lopez 3-0-2 was relentless with punches and pressure on the way to a unanimous decision over Southpaw Xavier Burges 4-1. All three judges scored the bout 40-36, as did I.

In the second knockout of the night came by way of heavyweight Donato DeMartiis 2-0(1KO) who landed a beautiful left right combo to the head of John Ramos that put out for the count late in round one. Ramos looked determined to land the big shot with several huge handed attempts only to be knocked out himself. It was a try hard effort that got the puncher knocked out by the boxer.

MMA fighter Sidney Carlton got a walkover win over Cedric James who was a no show who showed up at the weigh in’s and not the event.

JP Reese got his first MMA win over Johanner Correa when the fight was called due to strikes at 1:45 of the second round.

Renato “Babalu” Sobral scored a three round unanimous decision over Robbie Lawler in a 195 lb catchweight fight at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles.

After a good first round by Lawler, Sobral came on strong and landed numerous strikes that broke down Lawler.

Sobral, 193 1/2 lbs of Costa Mesa, CA won by scores of 29-28 on all cards and is now 36-8. Lawler, 195 lbs of Granite City, IL is now 17-6.

Sobral said he would like a rematch with Dan Henderson who defeated him eleven years ago.

“This is something I will have to think about,’’ said Babalu, who triumphed by the scores of 29-28 three times. “Yes, of course, I want to be a champion again but I’m old school and he is my friend and friends last longer than title belts. But we’ll see.’’

“I wasn’t hurt, I just wanted to make him think I was,’’ said Lawler, who suffered damage to his body from a multitude of front kicks. “It was a ploy, a decoy, for him to fight me so I could knock him out.

“I’m disappointed with the result, but I have no complaints. The two takedowns in the first round may have been the difference. I know that I could have done much more. I should have done more.’’

Evangelista Cyborg scored a first round stoppage over Mariusz Zaromskis in a scheduled three round Welterweight bout.

Cyborg hurt Zaromiskis early in round one with some hard strikes. Zaromskis made a desperate attempt at a running high knee that was thwarted by Cyborg and Zaromskis fell to the ground where Cyborg pounced on him with three hard shots and referee Herb Dean stopped the bout at 2:38.

Cyborg, 171 lbs of Brazil is now 18-13 with eleven knockouts. Zaromskis, 169 1/2 lbs of San Jose, CA is now 13-5.

“I am very happy with my performance and this fight,’’ the male Cyborg said. “I’ve had so many first-round knockouts. I can’t say if this was the best, but it was definitely one of the best.

“I want to fight (STRIKEFORCE world welterweight champion) Nick Diaz. He’s the fighter I want more than anybody right now.’’

Tim Kennedy scored a first round submission over Trevor Prangley in a scheduled three round Middleweight bout.

Kennedy, 185 1/2 lbs of Austin, TX won via choke at 3:35 and his record is now 12-2 with half of his wins coming by submission. Prangley, 185 1/2 lbs of South Africa is now 22-6-1.

“I don’t go the distance. In fact, I’m totally against going the distance,’’ Kennedy said. “I’m happy with the end result. He hit me with a good uppercut; that stuff’s not supposed to happen. I have some of the greatest hands in the sport. I just want to start fighting the kinds of opponents I can knock out and start a highlight reel on. I’m tired of fighting wrestlers.’’

KJ Noons scored a three round split decision of Conor Heun in a 160 lb catchweight bout.

Heun almost had Noons out in the first as he had Noons in a rear naked choke. Heun was bloodied under his left eye in the first round and fought through heavy blood flow as he ate a lot of shots by Noons, who is an accomplished boxer.

Noons, 159 1/2 lbs of San Diego won by scores of 29-28 and 29-28 while Heun, 159 1/2 lbs of Hollywood, CA took a cardc at 29-28.

“He’s a very game guy who brought it the whole fight,’’ said Noons, won by the scores of 29-28 twice and 27-30. “I definitely feel I won the fight and I really wanted to please the fans, but I had to work for it. I haven’t used my legs in a while so if felt good to get in some leg kicks.’’

A bloodied Heun felt he’d done enough to get the nod. “I wanted to fight one of the top guys to prove to everybody that I could compete with the top ones, and I think I did that tonight,” he said. “But I’m very disappointed with the decision. Only one judge scored the fight.

“I feel I did more than enough to win although the cuts were definitely a factor. By the third round, I was aiming my punches at the guy in the middle.’’

Noons is now 8-1. Heun is now 8-4.

Tim Sylvia: “It’s going to be a good fight Friday night. I’ve been asked if it’s been difficult finding workout partners like my opponent who is 280 pounds with 4-percent body fat and gases-out after 45-seconds. Yeah, my workout partners don’t usually gas-out after 45-seconds. He (Pudzianowski) is big, strong and a worthy opponent. Friday night we’re going to have some fun.”

WORCESTER, Mass. (May 12, 2010) – In only his third professional mixed-martial-arts fight, iconic Polish powerhouse Mariusz “Dominator” Pudzianowski makes his U.S. debut against former 2-time UFC heavyweight champion Tim “Maine-iac” Sylvia, headlining the May 21st “Moosin: God of Martial Arts” pay-per-view event, at the DCU Center in Worcester.

Pudzianowski, 5-time World’s Strongest Man, is arguably the most popular Polish sports personality today, even hotter than boxer Tomasz Adamek, Formula One driver Robert Kubica, tennis player Agnieszka Radwanska, swimmer Otylia Jedrzejczak and NBA player Marcin Gortat.

The 6-1, 275-pound chiseled Pudzianowski practices karate, boxing and even finished second last year in Poland’s version of “Dancing With The Stars.” Taking on a super heavyweight such as the 6-8, 300-pound Sylvia (25-6-0), however, rates as an ambitious challenge for the relatively inexperienced Pudzianowski.

Sylvia (25-6-0), a native of Eastbrook, Maine, has defeated many of the top MMA heavyweights and super heavyweights – Andrei Arlovski (2) Brandon Vera, Jeff Monson, Wes Sims, Ricco Rodriguez, Mike Whitehead (2), Ben Rothwell and Jason Lambert. He believes that, if the Polish strongman and his team agreed to fight him this early in Mariusz’ MMA career, they must feel that he is over-the-hill in the cage.

Why fight Sylvia in only his third pro MMA fight? “First of all,” the 33-year-old Mariusz answered, “I’m not getting any younger. On a more serious note, though, I need to know as soon as possible what my strengths and weaknesses are fighting an established named fighter like Sylvia. My latest fight (last Saturday night in Poland) versus (Yusuke) Kawaguchi was worth every penny as a part of my MMA education (Mariusz won a 2-round decision against an opponent who was 11-1 going into the fight). Sylvia is the next logical step on my way to a world championship. I believe in learning by doing things.

“Sylvia brings experience, which I obviously don’t have, and he can punch. He is tall and has a long reach. I would like to use his strengths as his weaknesses, but I don’t want to talk too much about this. No extra tips from me, no way. I am somebody who will never quit. He has to knock me out cold to win. There’s no other way. I will fight a more disciplined fight than my last one, for sure, but I will still be fun to watch. I’m fighting for fans in order to give them good entertainment for their money.

The Ballroom was dancing Saturday night ,not with feet but with fists, as Kinkaid & Goddard Promotions presented The Battle in the Ballroom. A capacity crowd was treated to 13 exciting amateur bouts with the main event leaving the crowd cheering for more as Jessica Eye (Strong Style MMA) captured the Ohio Women’s Lightweight Title with a decision over Lauren Coney (PAL / Thurogood BC). Both women had their shining moments throughout the contest but it was Eye who stuck to her game plan and wore down the aggressive Coney. Eye, a crowd favorite, is easily making the transition from MMA to Boxing as she has yet to be defeated in either arena of combat.

First Offense
Last weekend’s Locked In The Cage: First Offense in Leesburg, Virginia as an “all amateur” show with explosive results. Fans were on their feet screaming for more as LITC provided a lightning fast KO, several TKOs and submissions and only one fight ended in decision.
With 5 submissions on the evening, choosing the submission of the night wasn’t an easy task but the bout between Coalition Fight Club’s Kevin Rohrer and Warpath’s Tyrone Chrisjohn stands out. Undefeated Kiko France is set to return to the Empire Fighting Championship at Harrah’s Tunica Casino 4/23 against Chris Davis in a heavyweight bout. France (4-0) has been on a tear since making his pro debut in July 2008 and has not been out of the first round in any of his four fights. In fact his longest fight lasted only 82 seconds. In his last debut France submitted Tony Roberts in 53 seconds.

France serves as the head Brazilian jui jitsu instructor at American Top Team of Missouri. France is a black belt in Brazilian jui jitsu and is also two time Pan-American champion, two time Brazilian State Champion, two time NAGA champions, Braziliero Champion and Brazilian National Champion.

Davis (9-2), out of Headhunters Combatatives in Tuscaloosa, Al comes into the fight with France on a two fight winning streak. Both wins were by TKO in the first round. In January Davis knocked out Brian Imes halfway through the first round. “The Professional” has fought allover the south and has only been defeated by Vinny Magalhaes and Jeremy Horn.

Tyler Sory, the President of Empire Fights is excited to have France vs. Davis headlining the show. “It is going to be a tough fight for Kiko,” explained Sory. “Kiko has walked through everyone we have put in front of him and Chris Davis is no joke. In February of 2009, he legally changed his from Jon Koppenhaver to War Machine. He had one of the best fights in the history of MMA PPV. He’s starred in a porn movie with Digital Playground. He’s several times faced legal action outside the cage. To raise money for his attorneys, he’s put on ebay all his memorabilia from his MMA fights including some of his most personal items – his liver, his kidney and his sperm for sale!

And in only eight days, the MMA legend known as War Machine will come to Atlanta to fight local standout Tex Johnson in the main event of Wild Bill’s Fight Night on Saturday, April 17!

Wild Bill’s Fight Night is not new to the spotlight of the MMA industry hosting many of the country’s top fighters, and with that controversy has not been far away either. The last Wild Bill’s Fight Night featured Junie Browning, one of MMA’s most controversial fighters. After hosting Junie in the main event, War Machine had to be next!

Kenny Florian scored a third round choke out over Japanese import Takanori Gomi at 2:52 of the final round in the main event at Ultimate Fight Night 21 at the Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina

Florian was dominant and softened Gomi as he mounted him with a choke just before going hind Gomi for the rear-naked choke.

Florian, 156 lbs of Brookline, MA is now 15-4. Gomi, 155 lbs of Tokyo, Japan is now 31-6-1.

Reigning Ultimate Fighter winner, Roy “Big Country” Nelson landed one huge over hand right that lvirtually knocked out Stefan Struve and scored a first round stoppage in their scheduled three round Heavyweight bout.

After Nelson landed that blow he pounced on Struve and the fight was quickly stopped thirty-nine seconds into the bout.

Nelson, 263 lbs of Las vegas was giving up eleven inches to the 6?11? Struve is now 16-4. Struve of the Netherlands is now 23-4.

Jorge Rivera pounded Nate Quarry over two rounds in their scheduled three round Middleweight bout.

Rivera pounded Quarry and bloodied him in round one. In round two, Rivera quickly knocked Quarry down and then pounded on a Quarry when the fight was stopped by referee Mario Yamasaki at twenty-nine seconds of round two.

Rivera, 186 lbs of Milford, MA is now 18-7. Quarry, 186 lbs of Gresham, OR is now 18-4.

Ross Pearson scored a three round unanimous decision over Dennis Siver in a Lightweight bout.

Pearson bloodied Siver in round one but Siver showed some spunk but it wasnt enough as Pearson won by scores of 30-27 on all cards.

OROVILLE, CALIFORNIA — In the mixed martial arts main event of a three sport card, Jesse Brock outwrestled local favorite Chris David before a sellout crowd at the Feather Falls Casino & Lodge in on Saturday night. Boxing and amateur kickboxing rounded out a fun-filled event dubbed “Playboy Fight Night.”

What looked to be a competitive main event on paper turned into a one-sided wrestling match as Brock (11-5, 2 KOs, 5 Submissions) of Boise, Idaho took David (13-8-2, 4 KOs, 5 Submissions) of Oroville to the mat early and often, never relinquishing control in the fight. Brock, 136, took David, 135, to the mat immediately, but did little real damage in the first round.

David momentarily locked in a rear naked choke with Brock on the mat, but the Boise native quickly broke the hold while maintaining his position on top. For the most part David was either on his back, or on his face, with Brock on his back. In either position he was at Brock’s mercy, unable to get started with any sort of offense. For a brief moment, David broke from Brock’s grasp, much to the delight of his loyal supporters. However, the shift in momentum was only temporary, as Brock took David back down to the canvas. The third round was more of the same before Brock was declared the unanimous victor via shutout, 30-27 on all three judges’ cards.

Fighting for the second time in ten days, Ryan Wong (2-2, 1 KO) of San Jose, California took a hotly-contested three-round split decision over previously unbeaten Colin Hart (3-1, 2 Submissions) of Santa Rosa, California. Each fighter had their moments in a tough fight. Wong, 185, fought just last Friday in Reno, but had no problem with endurance. Hart, 184 ¼, fought hard until the end, but two judges saw the fight for Wong, 29-28. The lone dissenting judge had the same score, but for the Santa Rosa resident.

Martin Sandoval (5-2, 3 KOs, 2 Submissions) of Oakdale, California scored a first-round submission victory over Sammy Sanders (1-3, 1 KO) of Santa Rosa. Sandoval, 125 ¼, had his back on the mat, for much of the fight. Sanders, 125 ¾, looked to be in complete control before Sandoval grabbed onto his arm. Time of the submission was 1:03 of the first.

Taylor McCorriston (4-0, 2 Submissions) of San Ramon, California remained unbeaten via first-round stoppage over Bryant Munoz (4-3, 4 Submissions) of Oakdale. McCorriston, 135 ¼, looked to be in some trouble on the mat, but was able to grab a hold of the arm of Munoz, 135, and forced the submission. Time of the stoppage was 1:33 of the first.

Rounding out the MMA portion of the card, Rafael Rios (2-0, 2 Submissions) of Stockton, California forced Junior Villanueva (1-1, 1 KO) of Oakdale to tap out in the first round. Rios, 149 ½, cinched in with an armbar and submitted Villanueva, 147 ¾, at just 1:11 of the round.

In the first boxing match on the card, former amateur standout Richard Hargraves (2-0, 2 KOs) of San Francisco, California scored his second consecutive stoppage victory, this time over J.C. Saade (0-2) of Los Angeles, California. Hargraves, 151 ¾, punished Saade, 151, throughout the first round, flashing hand speed that his opponent could not compete with. Before the bell to begin the second round, Saade told the referee that he could not continue due to fatigue which prompted the stoppage.

In the other boxing match on the card, heavyweights Yohan Banks (3-3-3, 1 KO) of Redwood City, California and Hector Martinez (5-4, 4 KOs) of Broderick, California let loose in an action-packed four-rounder. Banks, 264, dropped Martinez, 228 ¾, with a clubbing overhand right midway through the second. Martinez was clearly dazed, but managed to pull himself up with a little help from the turnbuckle. With some clever footwork, Martinez was able to get out of the round and clear his head.

Banks may have punched himself out going for the knockout, which allowed Martinez to punch his way back into the fight in the third. Two-way action closed the fight out in the fourth, with Martinez getting the best of it over the tired Banks. In the end, two judges liked Banks by the score of 38-37. One dissenting judge favored Martinez by the same score, 38-37.

In the first of two amateur kickboxing bouts, Ignacio Zambrano of Stockton, California scored two knockdowns in the third round en route to a unanimous decision over Mike Spatz of Sacramento. Zambrano, 197 ¾, may not have been body beautiful, but he was able to outslug the reluctant Spatz, 187, for the three rounds.

Gaston Bolanos of Pleasanton scored the stoppage victory over Mitch Thompson of Sacramento, California in a welterweight amateur kickboxing contest. Bolanos, 141 ¾, was the superior fighter and it was fairly evident from the outset. Thompson, 144 ¾, did not give referee Dan Stell the response he was looking for after a standing eight-count in the third. Time of the stoppage was 1:44 of the third-round.

Tonight’s event, promoted by ESMG World, was taped to air at a later date. Adding some spice to the evening was the Playmate Dancers, including 2006 Playmate of the Year Kara Monaco, and a bevy of ring card girls. Former contender Juan Lazcano worked the corner of Hector Martinez and current WBA Interim Super Flyweight Champion Nonito Donaire Jr. was ringside taking photographs.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira looked terrible against Frank Mir

However, eight months after the Mir debacle, Nogueira looked like one of the
top mixed martial artists on the planet in dominating Randy Couture.
Nogueira won a clear-cut unanimous decision against the UFC legend.

So which “Big Nog” can we expect to see in the future?

The answer will be revealed very shortly at UFC 110 on Saturday, February
20. Nogueira is set to step into the cage against an undefeated fighter many
observers feel is a huge part of the heavyweight future, Cain Velasquez.

Velasquez, the two-time All-American wrestler at Arizona State University,
has ripped off seven straight victories to start his career. Of the seven
wins, only one man (Cheick Kongo) even made it to the scorecards. The other
six fighters all fell by TKO.

But none of the men Velasquez defeated have anything close to the career
accolades of Nogueira. Besides Kongo, Velasquez’s biggest win was against
former IFL star Ben Rothwell.

On the other hand, Nogueira is the only man to hold heavyweight
championships in both Pride FC and the UFC. He’s beaten proven MMA stars
like Mirko Cro Cop, Josh Barnett, and Dan Henderson.

The match-up between Nogueira and Velasquez will be a true test of where
each fighter stands today and for the future.

“I’m very excited for the fight,” Nogueira said about the upcoming match-up.
“Wherever it goes, I’ll be ready.”

Nogueira is widely known for being one of the best submissions fighters in
the history of the sport. With Velasquez being a top-level wrestler,
Nogueira could find himself on his back early on.

“If he takes me down, we’re going for submissions,” Nogueira said. “My
jiu-jitsu will be 100 percent.”

The Brazilian star understands that takedowns are a big part of Velasquez’s
skill set. To prepare, Nogueira has enlisted the help of two All-American
wrestlers-Strikeforce light heavyweight Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal and UFC
middleweight Mark Munoz.

“King Mo is one the best wrestlers in America,” Nogueira said. “We do a lot
of single leg and double leg defense. I have a very good camp here.”

Should Nogueira defeat Velasquez, he’ll likely be in line for another shot
at the heavyweight title. With the Frank Mir vs. Shane Carwin winner slated
to face Brock Lesnar sometime this summer, Nogueira would likely have to
wait until fall of 2010 to receive the chance.

Nogueira is highly interested in fighting for the title, but he has not
forgotten about his poor performance against Mir. Mir laid a two round
beating on the former champion in December 2008. Nogueira also does not like
Mir’s constant trash-talking.

“If I fight against Mir, it will be different. I’ll be in better shape and
no injuries,” Nogueira said, alluding to the rumor that he had a staph
infection just prior to the fight.

“I don’t like how Mir talks. I come from jiu-jitsu. I come from martial
arts. I train hard, and I respect my opponent. I will never say anything bad
about my opponent. My opponent works hard so that’s my way. I don’t think he
shows respect.”

Another man in the heavyweight title picture is Nogueira’s teammate Junior
Dos Santos.

As a top prospect in the UFC, Dos Santos is even more accomplished than
Velasquez. He has won 10 of 11 fights, and he defeated MMA stars Mirko Cro
Cop, Gilbert Yvel, and Fabricio Werdum along the way.

“Never,” Nogueira said, when asked if he would ever fight Dos Santos. “To
me, that would be like fighting my brother (current UFC fighter Antonio
Rogerio Nogueira). No money would be worth it to fight one of my best
friends.”

While Nogueira battles at heavyweight, his identical twin brother campaigns
in the light heavyweight division. Nogueira gives a simple explanation as to
why.

“I don’t want to be competitive with my brother,” Nogueira said. “I was
always a little bigger than him-maybe 12 pounds. He can make 205.”

Prior to joining the UFC, Nogueira had a very successful stint in Pride FC
over in Japan. However, one man Nogueira could not defeat in three attempts
was consensus top heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko. Over the past few years,
Emelianenko was heavily rumored to be joining the UFC, but no deal ever came
to fruition.

“That’s his choice,” Nogueira said about Emelianenko’s decision to sign with
Strikeforce. “He doesn’t want to come and join the UFC show? Some other guy
will. The UFC has the best heavyweights. If he comes to the UFC, he’s going
to face the best guys.”

Nogueira and Emelianenko last fought almost five years ago when Nogueira was
28. Now 33 and a veteran of 38 fights, Nogueira has dismissed any talk of
retirement.

“I think I could fight until 37,” Nogueira said. “I’m in really good shape.
I’ll fight until my body tells me I can’t.”

The upcoming fight will go a long way in showing Nogueira exactly where his
body is. Is he the fighter that was dominated by Mir? Or is he the warrior
that took apart Couture?

Nogueira will certainly find out the answers against Velasquez at UFC 110.

In predicting the fight, Nogueira stopped short of declaring victory, but he
did promise a memorable match-up.

“I feel good,” he said. “I’m going to do the best show possible.”

Nick Diaz scored an exciting first round knockout over Mariusz Zaromskis in a wild round to retain his Strikeforce Welterweight title at the Bank Once Center in Sunrise, Florida.

Both guys landed heavy shots that included Zaromskis landing a hard shot that sent Doaz down to the floor but Diaz popped right up and and began to pound away on the face of Zaromskis as he landed some huge shots until he landed a booming right hook that put Zaromskis down and out at the 4:38 mark of round one.

Diaz, of Stockton, California is now 20-8-1 with twelve knockouts. Zaromskis of London is now 13-4.

“I’ll fight anybody,’’ said Diaz, who has been victorious in seven of his last eight and hasn’t lost in more than two years. I felt real good fighting again at 170. But the guy I really want is Gegard Mousasi.’’

Cris Cyborg retained her Strikeforce Lightweight title as she stopped a tough Marloes Coenen in round tyhree of their scheduled five round five.

Cyborg controlled most of the action throughout the fight by Coenen showed toughness and got in some big punches for herself until Cyborg pounded her on the ground and the fight was stopped at 2:07 of round three.

Cyborg, 144 1/2 lbs of Curitiba, Brazil is now 9-1 with seven stoppages. Coenen, 143 3/4 lbs of Amsterdam is now 17-4.

I’m very happy to win this fight,’’ said Cyborg shortly the heated scrap was stopped at 3:40 of the third. “It was a good fight. I think I could have done more but she was the toughest fighter I’ve faced and has a great heart. I admire her a lot.’’

Coenen, a strikingly attractive submission whiz who couldn’t take down Cyborg, wanted the fight to continue. “This is extremely disappointing to say the least,’’ she said. “This was for a world title. It should have been allowed to go a little longer. I wanted to fight.’’

Former NFL Star and Olympic Bobsledder Herschel Walker proved that life begins at forty-seven years old as he made a successful pro debut by stopping an over matched Greg Nagy in round three of a scheduled three round Heavyweight fight.

Walker showed versatility as he was effective with strikes and on the ground and was in control for just about every second of the fight until it was stopped at 2:17 of round three.

Walker, 214 1/4 lbs looked in pronominal shape to winhis pro debut. Nagy, 210 1/2 lbs of Phoenix, AZ is 1-2

“I feel good but I didn’t do many things right and I still have a lot to learn,’’ said Walker, the 1982 Heisman Trophy winner and a two-time Pro Bowl competitor. “The experience itself was exciting and I thank my opponent for fighting me. It’s tough to fight an old man. This is the hardest thing I’ve ever done.

“I thought I’d be more nervous. I’m an MMA fighter now. I earned a little bit of a stripe tonight. This is one of my biggest athletic achievements ever.’

“Ruthless” Robbie Lawlor scored one of the most devastating one punch knockout over Melib Manhoef in round of their scheduled three round bout.

Manhoef dominated the fight as he was viciously kicking Lawlor’s legs and landing hard body shots until Lawlor landed a “Hayemaker” right hook that landed squarely on Manhoef’s chin and he was knocked out cold before he crumbled to the ground and for good measure, Lawlor landed a hard right to jaw the jaw and the fight was stopped at 3:33 of round one.

Lawlor of Granite City, IL is now 17-5-1 with fourteen knockouts. Manhoef of Amsterdam, Netherlands is now 24-7-1

“I knew this guy was really a killer, but I knew I would catch him,’’ Lawler said. “When he looks to finish, he really loads up. I just lured him in and got him.

“He was chopping and chopping and he was really hurting me with the leg kicks. When I felt the first one land, I knew I could get one more in and finish, and that’s what I did.’’

Former WWE Superstar Bobby Lashley remained undefeated as he pounded Wes Sims for much of their two-plus minute Heavyweight bout.

Lashley had the 6’8″ Sims on tne ground and continued to pound Sims until the referee stopped the bout at 2:06 of round one of their scheduled three round fight

Lashley, 252 1/4lbs of Coconut Creek, Fla is now 5-0 with two knockouts. Sims. 258 1/4 lbs of Lancaster, OH is now 22-13-1-2.

“Anytime you win and learn something, it’s a good night,’’ he said. “Sims is a tall guy who came in with nothing to lose, almost like he didn’t care, and those are the guys that are usually the hardest to fight.

“I want to continue to step up.

When people think of pioneers in the sport of MMA, Frank Shamrock’s name is not usually mentioned. The names Royce Gracie, Randy Couture, Ken Shamrock (Frank’s brother via adoption), and Chuck Liddell—just to name a few—are much more prominent.

Plus, if it was up to the UFC, Shamrock’s name would be forgotten entirely, and as a result, a big part of the sport’s history would go unnoticed.

For the two year time period from Dec 97 to Sep 99, Shamrock was the most dominant fighter in the promotion. In his very first fight with the UFC, Shamrock submitted Kevin Jackson in just 14 seconds to win the light heavyweight title (then named the middleweight championship).

Following the Jackson win, Shamrock defeated Igor Zinoviev, Jeremy Horn, and John Lober in successive fights. After a one-fight sabbatical in Japan (a draw with Kiyoshi Tamura for the Rings promotion), Shamrock returned to the UFC for what his most memorable fight.

In a twenty-minute war, Shamrock outlasted Tito Ortiz to keep hold of the title. Ortiz finally gave in as he tapped out due to strikes at the end of the fourth round.

The epic fight with Ortiz would be the last time Shamrock would ever fight in the UFC.

“I was in the era of the beginning of free agency,” Shamrock said, when asked why he never fought again in the UFC. “That really went against the whole beginning of the company. It went against their model—the whole corporate control it all thing.”

When the UFC rolled out their list of the top 100 fights in the history of the company, Shamrock vs. Ortiz was suspiciously left off. Or maybe it was not too surprising. UFC President Dana White is definitely not Shamrock’s biggest fan.

White has often referred to Shamrock as both a “moron” and a “jackass”.

“I thought it was small-minded and silly,” Shamrock said about his exclusion from the top 100 list. “It is what it is.”

Rather than sit back and allow the UFC remove him from the sport’s history, Shamrock has done the one thing that he probably still does better than anyone else in the sport —talk.

“It’s been a blessing,” Shamrock said about not being with Zuffa. “I get more media, more press and more opportunity because of it.”

Since departing from the UFC, Shamrock has become one of the top stars for two different promotions. First, he was the face of the ill-fated EliteXC, and now, he is a top draw for Scott Coker’s Strikeforce.

Recently though, Shamrock has not had a great deal of success inside the cage. He has lost three of his last four fights (Nick Diaz, Cung Le, and Renzo Gracie), and the only win was an exciting victory against an overmatched Phil Baroni.

Nevertheless, Shamrock is not ready to call it a career just yet.

“I was looking at a March time,” Shamrock said about a possible return. “We’re still trying to see if we have a reserved March date for Showtime. Or May if we don’t get March together.”

As far as a possible opponent, Shamrock is not sure who he will be facing in the early part of 2010, but he did drop a famous name for a future opponent.

“I’d love to fight Dan Henderson,” Shamrock said. “We did a submission wrestling match a few years ago, and I got him real quick. We’ve sparred together and kind of circled each other for years.”

Shamrock believes his next fight will be on cable television instead of the larger platform offered by CBS.

“I don’t know if I have what CBS is looking for right now,” Shamrock said. “There are other guys fighting for titles. I don’t know if I can mess with the (Ronaldo) Jacare’s of the world.”

What CBS does want to televise is the man generally regarded as the sport’s top heavyweight, Fedor Emelianenko.

Even though Strikeforce is building its own core of stars with fighters like Robbie Lawler, Jake Shields, and Gilbert Melendez, Emelianenko is clearly the guy everyone wants to see above all others.

EliteXC was not able to have a successful show on CBS without the drawing power of Kimbo Slice. Could Strikeforce be falling into the same problem with Emelianenko as EliteXC did with Slice?

Shamrock was non-committal when asked if CBS could broadcast a card without the prized Russian.

“I think so,” Shamrock said, “ but I don’t think it would have the same excitement.”

Emelianenko made his successful debut for the company last Nov on CBS. Another man set to start with Strikeforce at the end of the month is former NFL running back Herschel Walker.

“The question has always been—‘what would happen if you take a super athlete and plug him into MMA?’” Shamrock said about Walker’s debut. “I guess now we’ll know.”

Shamrock is excited by the prospects of Walker starting with Strikeforce even if it at the age of 47.

“I think it’s awesome, crazy and amazing,” Shamrock said. “He knows Taw Kwon Do and striking. He knows little about fighting, but he’s really knuckled down.”

Seeing Walker train mixed martial arts seriously has convinced Shamrock that Walker’s debut will not be a freak show. Unfortunately, athletes like Jose Canseco and Johnnie Morton tried making the transition in the past with disastrous results.

Shamrock believes people now have a better understanding of the severity of the sport.

“The thing that scared me from the beginning was the reality of men fighting,” Shamrock said. “It’s just so dangerous. I like that it is really a sport now, and I’m happy with the rules and regulations of the game.”

On the other hand, Shamrock is very clear with what he does not like about MMA, and it comes straight back to the UFC.

“I don’t like that it’s not always promoted as a sport and some promotions gloss over it for brand positioning,” Shamrock said.

Still, as mixed martial arts makes its way into the new decade, Shamrock will be one of the guys who will play a big role in continuing to build the mainstream acceptance. Whether it is through announcing, the media, or inside the cage, Shamrock will be on the frontline for Strikeforce.

With all the changes that have come with developing the sport, Shamrock is very happy to have been around through the whole evolution. He believes he should be mentioned in the same breath as Gracie, Couture, Liddell, and his brother.

“I consider myself one of the true pioneers. For certain.”

Gray Maynard scored a three round split decision over Nate Diaz in the Lightweight main event of UFC Fight Night at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA

Scores were 30-37 and 29-28 for Maynard, 155 lbs of Las Vegas and is now 10-0. Diaz, 155 lbs of Stockton, CA is now 11-6

Evan Dunham scored athird round tapout submission over Efarin Escudero in a three round Lightweight bout between undefeated fighters.

Dunham, 155 lbs of Las Vegas is 10-0. Escudero, 155 lbs of Tempe, AZ is 13-1

Aaron Simpson was almost knocked out in the first round but came back to win a close split decision over Tom Lawlor in a three round Light Heavyweight bout.

Scores were 29-28 on two cards for Simpson and 29-28 Lawlor. Simpson, 185 lbs of Phoenix, AZ is now 7-0. Lawlor, 185 lbs of Orlando, FL is 6-2-1.

Amir Sadollah scored a three round unanimous decision over Brad Blackburn in a Middelweight bout.

Scores were 30-27 on all cards for Sadollah, 170 lbs of Richmond, VA and is now 4-1. Blackburn, 170 lbs of Olympia, WA is now 15-10-1.
