MMA brings life into focus for Navy vet Restrepo

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Aug. 8th, 2017) — There’s something strangely calming about the sound of the cage door closing for Queens, N.Y., bantamweight Miguel Restrepo.

A former U.S. Marine, twice deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq, rendered homeless upon discharge, left battling post-traumatic stress disorder wondering where his next meal would come from, Restrepo fights for a living knowing no opponent he faces can be tougher than grappling with everyday life.

The pageantry of mixed martial arts, a whirlwind of emotions for some, almost comes easy for Restrepo, who finds peace in the sport’s chaos and unpredictability.

“When I take a look at my life and all the stuff I’ve been through,” says Restrepo, who returns to the cage Friday, Aug. 11th, 2017 at Twin River Casino on the main card of “CES MMA 45” on AXS TV, “fighting is a walk in the park.”

The 35-year-old Restrepo (4-3-1, 2 KOs), a transplanted Miami native now living in New York, enters Friday’s nationally-televised bout against rising prospect Richie Santiago (4-0) of Milford, Mass., in the best shape of his life “physically, mentally and spiritually,” a far cry from the war veteran who once struggled with civilian life upon returning to U.S. soil eight years ago.

It took a while for him to get here. It took living out of his car in Miami, an ex-Marine who once defended his country in combat now standing on the corner begging for change, living off friends’ leftovers, yet somehow managing to block out all the negativity for a few hours a day to focus on training.

His love for martial arts began at the age of 11 when he took Taekwondo classes, but admits that was just passing fad, similar to the one year in high school he spent wrestling.

A lifelong fan of MMA who at once used to hate Royce Gracie because “all he did was choke people out, and I thought you just had to stand up and fight,” Restrepo found ways to keep himself sharp while serving in the Marines. He enrolled at a Brazilian jiu-jitsu school while stationed in the south, and even found a small spot to train near his base in Naples when he was transferred to Italy.

Once he returned home in 2009 following eight years in the Navy, mixed martial arts was the only constant in his life. Nothing else seemed right. Restrepo spent years battling PTSD, stemming from his inability to “turn off the ‘war dog’ switch” and readjust to civilian life.

Without a degree — and being what he described as a “heavily-tattooed individual” — he had trouble finding work, particularly in the hospitality field, which fueled Miami’s tourism industry.

“Spending eight years institutionalized, being around this great group of guys who, no matter what, have your back, where if they don’t do their job, your life is on the line, it was hard for me to understand that in the civilian world, things aren’t that serious,” Restrepo said.

“In a lot of situations, I found myself in a corner where I felt like I had to fight. I was rebelling against the status quo. I couldn’t understand how being a military member wasn’t affording me the opportunities I felt should’ve been available to me when I got out.

“I couldn’t deal with people walking around nonchalantly without a care in the world. That was a major adjustment for me.”

He likened mixed martial arts to his time as a Marine, the structure of the sport balancing out the chaos in his life outside of the gym.

“That camaraderie helped guide me,” he said. “Even if I was stressed out, I always had somewhere to train.”

Restrepo eventually turned pro in 2013 and won four of five bouts after fighting to a draw in his debut, developing a reputation as a gritty, hard-nosed fighter in the Miami area, earning him the nickname, “The Magic City Mauler.”

After two and a half years of sleeping in his car, begging for money under bridges, Restrepo boldly sold his car for $400, spending $180 of his windfall on a one-way ticket to Quebec, hoping that moving north of the border would change his luck.

“As it turned out, my passport expired three days after I left the United States,” he said, “so I had to spend the rest of my money to get it reissued. That threw me for a loop.”

Restrepo spent the next few months working odd jobs to survive, either as a waiter or busboy, while sleeping on the street or at train stations, until his sister called him in October of 2015, offering him a one-way ticket to New York to come live with her instead.

“The fall was approaching, and there was a frost in the air. It was a very dark time for me, not having any money,” Restrepo said. “I fell into that rut that a lot of vets fall into.

“Twenty-two million vets are homeless. Many commit suicide. I could’ve been a statistic.”

Restrepo admits he never had a close relationship with his sister, who left their household at 14 and moved to New York, but being together the past few years has strengthened their bond. She has helped him get back on his feet so he can concentrate on continuing his education and developing a skill in order to earn a living beyond fighting. He hopes to one day inspire others, particular veterans, who have a hard time coping with life beyond the military.

“I know who I am, but on the national level I’m pretty obscure,” he says, “so when I see a little kid after a fight and he comes up to me and says, ‘I love the way you fight! Can I take a picture with you?’ that does more for me than the actual fan. It’s a sense of gratitude knowing someone has taken time out of their schedule to come watch me fight. I’m honored.

“I’m sure everyone would love to have it easy and just have a million dollars, but these were the cards that were dealt to me. I don’t shy away from hard work. I love to be in the gym. I love to grind, to make something out of myself. My life has been a good test of will, determination and characters. That’s what I bring to fighting.

“One of the thing I want to do is give back, but my motto is, ‘You can’t pour from an empty cup.’ Right now, I’m working on myself so I can get to that point where I can give back.”

Like most fighters, Restrepo would love an opportunity to compete for the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC), but that’s not his barometer for success. He doesn’t put that kind of pressure on himself when he fights. Instead, getting inside that cage preparing to stand toe-to-toe with an opponent trying to take his head off is a break from the norm, arguably the most relaxing thing he has going for him.

“It’s all about living in the moment,” Restrepo said. “I’m getting paid to perform for 15 minutes. I’m an artist and the cage is my stage. It’s where I want to be. It’s where I feel I’m at my best. There’s no pressure. Why would I stress over something I love to do?”

Tickets for “CES MMA 45” are priced at $40.00, $55.00, $100.00 and $125.00 (VIP) and can be purchased online at www.cesboxing.com, www.twinriver.com, www.ticketmaster.com or www.cagetix.com/ces by phone at 401-724-2253/2254 or at the Twin River Casino Players Club. The preliminary card begins at 7 p.m. ET and features three bouts followed by the AXS TV Fights main card beginning at 9, which features six televised bouts.

The main card features two world-title bouts, including the long-awaited return of reigning CES MMA Heavyweight Champion Ashley Gooch (10-5, 7 KOs) defending the strap against fan-favorite Juliano Coutinho (7-3, 3 KOs), plus longtime regional stalwarts Saul Almeida (19-8, 1 KO) of Framingham, Mass., and Pedro Gonzalez (11-5) of nearby Gloucester battling for the promotion’s Interim Featherweight World Title.

In a highly-anticipated regional showdown that could steal the spotlight Aug. 11th, rising lightweight star Nate Andrews (10-1, 5 KOs) of East Providence, R.I., puts his four-fight win streak on the line against Maine native Bruce Boyington (14-10, 8 KOs), a veteran of 24 professional fights and a three-time WSOF vet.

Also on the main card, Cranston, R.I., welterweight Gary Balletto Jr. makes his television debut against Hooksett, N.H., vet Nick Alley (3-1, 1 KO). Balletto carries a three-fight win streak into next month’s bout, most recently dismantling Chris Torres by first-round submission on the preliminary card of “CES MMA 42.”

Unbeaten Milford, Mass., bantamweight Kris Moutinho (4-0, 1 KO) battles Erie, Pa., native Brandon Seyler (6-5-1, 1 KO), who makes his second appearance with CES MMA. Moutinho is off to a flying start as a pro with wins in all four of his bouts under the guidance of CES MMA, including an impressive unanimous decision win over seven-fight vet Lloyd Reyes at “CES MMA 42.”

Highlighting the preliminary card, 20-year-old Providence, R.I., native John Douma against Jason Rine (0-2) of Danville, Ohio, following wins in each of his last three amateur bouts.

Ludlow, Mass., lightweight Leon Davis (8-3, 1 KO) returns to face Andrew Osborne (7-10, 2 KOs), the two-time CES MMA vet and North Carolina native who now lives and trains in North Providence, R.I. BIBIANO FERNANDES SUBMITS ANDREW LEONE TO REMAIN ONE BANTAMWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION

05 August 2017 – Macao, China: The largest sports media property in Asian history, ONE Championship™ (ONE), returned to the glamorous entertainment capital of Asia with another evening of authentic world-class martial arts action. The Cotai Arena at The Venetian Macao played host to ONE: KINGS & CONQUERORS, featuring the absolute best in local and international martial arts talent. In the main event, Bibiano Fernandes remained the most dominant world champion in ONE Championship history by toppling American Andrew Leone. In the co-main event, Adriano Moraes overcame a spirited performance from Kairat Akhmetov to become the undisputed ONE Flyweight World Champion.

Defending ONE Bantamweight World Champion Bibiano “The Flash” Fernandes made quick work of Andrew Leone, submitting the American challenger with a rear-naked choke in the first frame of the much-awaited championship clash. It was the beginning of the end for Leone when Fernandes hammered a knee to the midsection that slumped his opponent to the mat. The 37-year-old Brazilian authored the final sequence by latching on the match-ending submission, keeping the prestigious gold-plated strap securely fastened around his waist. With the impressive victory over Leone, Fernandes has set an unprecedented ONE Championship record of seven successful title defenses, remaining unbeaten in the promotion.

Bibiano Fernandes, ONE Bantamweight World Champion, stated: “I feel great. I feel great, thank you Macao for having me. Thank you for my family in Canada and my family in Brazil who are watching me right now. I am here to stay. I welcome all challenges. I want to say thank you to Chatri [Sityodtong] and Matt Hume. I’m happy with ONE Championship. I want to continue fighting. Whoever I have to fight, I will accept. I am always ready!”

In the co-main event, Adriano “Mikinho” Moraes of Brazil defeated Kairat Akhmetov of Kazakhstan via five-round unanimous decision to become the sole owner of the ONE Flyweight World Championship. Moraes, who previously held the interim title, controlled the majority of the action with his grappling while defending champion Akhmetov tried his best to fend off the Brazilian’s advances with his wrestling. On the feet, Moraes got the better of the exchanges and landed the harder blows. All three judges scored the bout in favor of Moraes, who unifies the flyweight titles to become the undisputed king of the division.

Adriano Moraes, ONE Flyweight World Champion, stated: “I’m not surprised [with the victory]. Thank you very much, one more time, for the opportunity, ONE Championship. I want to thank my coach, my family and my friends. I’m very grateful.”

Hard-hitting Russian featherweight Timofey Nastyukhin and former world title challenger Koji “The Commander” Ando of Japan figured in an incredibly tactical three-round matchup, with Nastyukhin coming away with a well-earned unanimous decision victory. After Ando nullified most of the action using his feints and pacing, Nastyukhin turned up the pressure in the second half of the contest, consistently landing the more telling blows. Both competitors unloaded their best offense in the final minute of the third round. All three judges saw the bout in favor of Nastyukhin.

Top lightweight contender Shannon “OneShin” Wiratchai made quick work of India’s Rajinder Singh Meena, winning by knockout just moments into a scheduled three-round bout. The Bangkok Fight Lab mainstay authored one of his quickest finishes yet, landing a right knee flush to Meena’s head from the clinch. Referee Olivier Coste wasted no time in calling a halt to the contest once he realized Meena was completely out of it. The end came officially at 29 seconds of round number one, and is the fastest finish of Wiratchai’s career.

Undefeated Japanese veteran Hayato Suzuki made a successful ONE Championship promotional debut, thwarting former title challenger Joshua Pacio of the Philippines to win by first round submission. After Pacio missed slightly on a spinning back kick attempt, Suzuki capitalized by taking his back and dragging the Filipino to the ground. Although Pacio valiantly fought off Suzuki’s submission attempts, it was only a matter of time before the bout-ending sequence played out. In the end, Suzuki notched his first victory in the ONE Championship cage via rear naked choke, forcing the younger Pacio to tap out.

In a heated featherweight showdown between two top contenders, Kotetsu “No Face” Boku of Japan posted a thrilling technical knockout victory over Eric “The Natural” Kelly of Baguio City, Philippines, utilizing his exceptional boxing skill. Although Kelly was able to score on a couple of knockdowns by way of a monstrous right hand, Boku was never fazed and kept putting the pressure on the Filipino stalwart. In the third round, Boku took Kelly’s back and pounded on his opponent to earn the finish.

Highly-touted Chinese prospect “Rock Man” Chen Lei notched his sixth-straight triumph in his young professional martial arts career by submitting Malaysian standout Saiful “The Vampire” Merican in the third round. Leaning on his superb grappling pedigree, Chen overwhelmed with his takedowns and sustained sturdy top control on the canvas. Chen got the job done by compelling Merican to wave the white flag with a wrenching armbar in the last round of their three-round bantamweight collision.

Jomary Torres of the Philippines overcame insurmountable odds to mark the first blemish in the professional record of Thai martial arts superstar Rika “Tinydoll” Ishige. Torres had to endure the initial onslaught from Ishige, who wasted no time in taking her Filipina opponent to the ground, nearly scoring a submission finish via armbar. In the second round, Torres pulled off a gutsy rally, wobbling Ishige with lashing right hands. After dropping Ishige with another quick right cross, Torres followed Ishige to the mat and fastened a rear-naked choke to force the tap.

Leandro “Brodinho” Issa of Brazil made a triumphant return to ONE Championship by stopping Finnish martial artist Toni “Dynamite” Tauru inside of two rounds. Carrying his dominant momentum from the first round to the second, Issa staggered the former world title challenger with a left hook-right straight combination and drove him to the mat with a high-impact slam. On the ground, Issa zapped Tauru with big blows to force seasoned referee Yuji Shimada to step in and call a halt to the contest.

Magomed Idrisov of Russia kept his unblemished professional record intact at the expense of Herbert “The Blaze” Burns of Brazil, defeating the ONE Championship veteran in his promotional debut. Idrisov made sure to leave a lasting impression in his first outing under the ONE Championship banner, connecting on crisp combinations in the stand-up trade, while denying all of Burns’ takedown attempts. In the end, Idrisov’s masterful performance proved enough to earn him the undivided nod from the three judges at cageside.

Marcin Prachnio of Poland continued his winning roll inside the ONE Championship cage as he thwarted Brazilian submission specialist Gilberto “Giba” Galvao via first-round knockout. Prachnio, who had to brush off a hard overhand left from Galvao in the opening moments of the first frame, was able to sneak in a clean left straight to the chin of his opponent. As Galvao dropped to the canvas, Prachnio capitalized on the opportunity and pummeled his counterpart with ground strikes to secure the victory.

A tactical three-round middleweight bout served as the curtain-raiser contest for ONE: KINGS & CONQUERORS as Leandro Ataides of Brazil collided with Polish combatant Michal Pasternak in a battle of former world title contenders. With both men seeking to vie for gold once more, Ataides and Pasternak employed efficient strategies from bell to bell. Ataides utilized his speed and power to connect on a handful of thudding strikes on Pasternak, who responded with solid hooks, defending well against takedown attempts. After going back-and-forth for three rounds, Ataides was declared the victor by way of unanimous decision.

Almeida, Gonzalez collide for interim title at CES MMA 45

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Aug. 2nd, 2017) — It’s been a long time coming for both Saul Almeida and Pedro Gonzalez, two of the northeast’s most successful, talked-about fighters, who finally get their opportunity to lock horns for a title one week from Friday.

Combined, the veteran Massachusetts featherweights have fought 43 times over the span of nine years, boasting resumes as good as anyone in their weight class in the northeast.

On Friday, Aug. 11th, 2017, Framingham’s Almeida (19-8, 1 KO) and Glocester’s Gonzalez (12-5) meet face-to-face for the CES MMA Interim Featherweight Title on the main card of CES MMA 45 from Twin River Casino live on AXS TV, presumably for the opportunity to face reigning featherweight world-title holder Matt Bessette and unify the belts.

The Almeida-Gonzalez fight is one of two title fights and one of six televised bouts on AXS TV Fights, which airs live beginning at 9 p.m. ET. The nine-fight card also features the long-awaited return of reigning CES MMA Heavyweight Champion Ashley Gooch (10-5, 7 KOs) defending the strap against fan-favorite Juliano Coutinho (7-3, 3 KOs), plus the network television debut of Cranston, R.I., welterweight Gary Balletto Jr. (3-1, 1 KO).

All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Almeida and Gonzalez have traveled much different paths to the top of their weight class through the years. The 28-year-old Almeida, a submissions specialist and one of the most polarizing figures in regional MMA, has paid his dues on this circuit, fighting for various promotions – some defunct, some still thriving – including CES MMA, Bellator and the World Series of Fighting.

Aug. 11th marks his 11th appearance with CES MMA and he also boasts the distinction of being the only fighter on the card who also appeared on the promotion’s inaugural event in 2010, a testament to his durability and willingness to fight anyone at any given time, making him a worthy candidate for the interim title.

“Ever since I began doing this, I wanted to collect titles and collect belts, because it means you’re fighting the best around,” said Almeida, who most recently defeated Josh LaBerge at CES MMA 42. “To have been a part of CES 1, it’s been a journey, and it’s been fun to travel along that road.

“Fighting for the interim title, it’s a nice step. Winning just means it’s a start. That’s how I look at it. I can’t wait.”

Gonzalez, while not as ingrained into the CES MMA culture as much as Almeida has been through the years, has also put everything he has into this sport, in some cases risking personal and professional relationships, in order to reach his goal of becoming a world champion.

He’s dealt with his share of setbacks, injuries or problems outside of the cage that have stalled his progress, but after winning his fifth consecutive bout in April at CES MMA 43 – a streak that remarkably spans five years, further illustrating the gap between fights he’s endured – Gonzalez is back in the conversation among elite featherweights, a lesson to anyone watching that giving up is not an option.

“It’s the same thing in life,” Gonzalez added. “I’ve been through so much, yet I’ve come this far. Never give up. I’ve had some injuries, some personal problems, I’ve had so much going on – and I still do – but I’m not giving up until I get there. I’m one step closer to that.”

As for the matchup itself, Almeida’s lanky, 6-foot-1 frame and ability to wear down opponents is always a factor. Gonzalez, however, has earned submissions in 11 of his 12 victories, so he has no problem taking the fight to the canvas against an equally-adept submission specialist.

Asked how he thinks Almeida will approach the fight, Gonzalez said matter-of-factly, “Honestly, I don’t know.”

“It just goes by who wants it more. I’ve seen him fight multiple times. I know what he’s bringing to the table. As far as how to beat him, I don’t know. Once you get in that cage, everything changes. I’ll just go in there and do what I do. I’m sure he’ll try to grind it out. If that’s what he does, whatever. I just hope what I’ve done in training leading up to this fight is enough.”

Almeida, as always, remains confident. He’s banking on his experience and unmatched resume being a difference-maker next Friday. He’s faced some of the best, not just in the northeast, but in all relations, and feels there are few featherweights who can boast a similar claim.

“[Gonzalez] has been winning, but who’s he been fighting? You know what I mean?” Almeida said. “I don’t know if you can name one person in New England who is still actively in MMA who’s fought tougher people than me. The list and the amount of names, I don’t think you can name one.

“He’s on a nice streak, good for him, and he’s coming off another win and that’s why he’s here, and I’m coming off a win and that’s why I’m here. He’s a tough guy. I look forward to the challenge.”

“Saul is going to try to get into my head a little bit. Whatever,” countered Gonzalez. “That’s his game plan. As soon as the cage door closes, it’s just me and him in there. I’m just trying to keep my cool. I’m not trying to say anything or bash anyone. I respect Sityodtong, Juniko and everyone he trains with.”:

In fact, Gonzalez used to actively avoid fighting opponents out of Sityodtong because he began training under Neil LeGallo, the right-hand man of owner Mark Dellagrotte.

“It was just a respect thing,” Gonzalez said.

Times have changed, and, as Gonzalez says, he’s at the point in his career where his focus is on “getting to the next level” more so than respecting his own history, so he’s prepared to roll the dice against Almeida knowing the payoff for victory could be tremendous.

“It’s for a title and it gets me closer either to Matt Bessette or another fight, but I haven’t even thought of the belt,” he said. “I’m trying not to think about it. It’s just another win, another way for me to get closer to where I want to be.”

The idea of an interim title being up for grabs created an initial stir on social media, even from Bessette, who suffered a recent thumb injury while competing on Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) president Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series in Nevada, but neither Gonzalez or Almeida have a problem with where this road might lead them.

“[Bessette] had a great opportunity to be on the Dana White show and I was pulling for him. I was hoping he would win, but stuff like that happens. He got injured. It’s a business. That’s how it works. He has the belt. If all goes well, hopefully I get a belt. If he wants to unify it, I’m more than happy to do so. I like him before and I’ll like him after that, but a fight is a fight.”

The heavyweight championship main event features a contrast of styles with the heavy-handed Gooch locking horns with the submission specialist Coutinho, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt fighting out of Wareham, Mass., making his third appearance with CES MMA.

Gooch captured the then-vacant title at “CES MMA 33” in August, knocking out Greg Rebello in the third round and snapping the Providence native’s four-fight win streak. Aug. 11th will be his third appearance at Twin River, where he is currently 2-0 following wins over Rebello and Connecticut’s Josh Diekmann in January of 2016.

Also on the main card, Balletto Jr. makes his television debut against Hooksett, N.H., vet Nick Alley (3-1, 1 KO). Balletto carries a three-fight win streak into next month’s bout, most recently dismantling Chris Torres by first-round submission on the preliminary card of “CES MMA 42.”

Unbeaten Milford, Mass., bantamweight Kris Moutinho (4-0, 1 KO) battles Erie, Pa., native Brandon Seyler (6-5-1, 1 KO), who makes his second appearance with CES MMA, and bantamweight Richie Santiago (4-0, 1 KO) puts his unbeaten record on the line on AXS TV against Queens, N.Y., vet Miguel Restrepo (4-3-1, 2 KOs).

The 4-0 Santiago, 24, finished each of his four fights by submission, most recently at “CES MMA 43” against Chad Kelly. Restrepo returns to Rhode Island after challenging unbeaten bantamweight Carlos Candelario at “CES MMA 41.” Moutinho is off to a flying start as a pro with wins in all four of his bouts under the guidance of CES MMA, including an impressive unanimous decision win over seven-fight vet Lloyd Reyes at “CES MMA 42.”

Osborne comes off an upset win over previously-unbeaten Connor Barry by unanimous decision at “CES MMA 43” while Davis, a winner in his last four fights, makes his seventh appearance with CES MMA.

Also on the preliminary card, unbeaten featherweight Dylan Lockhard (3-0) of Hollis, N.H., faces Cortland, N.Y., vet Ahsan Abdullah (7-7, 3 KOs). Lockhard earned his first two wins as a pro under the guidance of CES MMA, including a first-round submission win over Russell Campbell at “CES MMA 40” in November.

(L-R) — World-class Russian MMA fighters Sergei Kharitonov, Mikhail Zayats and Alexander Volkov from a recent training session

You have been training on the same team for so many years. How would you describe Mikhail as an athlete?

Volkov: “He works very hard as a fighter, completes all workouts to the end, and is among the last to leave the gym.”

What did you learn from him during sparring and training sessions?
Volkov: “How to work to the utmost extent, both in training and in combat. When I watch Mikhail train, he inspires me to work harder and not to be lazy.. We always have small competitions while training and we push each other to work even harder.”

Which of you is more helpful to preparing for battle?
Volkov: “When Michael had no fights, he helped me a lot, of course. In my training camp, he was like a wrestling coach, helping me work on physical exercises as well. I would say that during these last few years, he was more involved in my training than I was in his. But, now he has an upcoming fight and I’m fully involved in his preparations. Moreover, his future opponent is 6 ft. 4 inches tall. So, I imitate his opponent’s style to help Misha prepare for the fight.”

What prediction do you have Mikhail Zayats’ upcoming fight?
Volkov: “I personally hope for the best. I expect him to end his fight with a bright victory, by knockout or submission. Although this won’t be an easy fight for him because his last fight was a while ago (Feb. 28, 2014,). I know from my own experience that even a one-year gap between two fights can make it very hard to show your best fighting qualities. Mikhail has a huge motivation now. He is very hungry for battles and victories too. So, I’m waiting for the triumphant victory of Mikhail Zaytz.”

ONE CHAMPIONSHIP ANNOUNCES ADDITIONAL BOUTS FOR ONE: KINGS & CONQUERORS

24 July 2017 – Macao, China: The largest sports media property in Asian history, ONE Championship™ (ONE), has just announced three additional bouts to ONE: KINGS & CONQUERORS, set for the Cotai Arena at The Venetian Macao on 5 August. The main event features ONE Bantamweight World Champion Bibiano Fernandes of Brazil who will defend his title against top contender Andrew Leone of the United States. In addition to the blockbuster headlining bout, Kairat Akhmetov will face Adriano Moraes to crown the undisputed ONE Flyweight World Champion in the evening’s co-main event. Also added to the card is Toni Tauru and Leandro Issa, who will be competing in a bantamweight contest, as well as middleweights Marcin Prachnio and Gilberto Galvão.

Kairat Akhmetov of Kazakhstan is undefeated inside the mixed martial arts cage. He boasts an unblemished 23-0 record over his six years as a professional. Akhmetov employs a devastating attack with power in both hands, as well as a tenacious wrestling game that overpowers his opponents. In Akhmetov’s last bout, he defeated top flyweight and former champion Adriano Moraes to capture the ONE Flyweight World Championship. Now, the two are set for a much-anticipated rematch in Macao.

Interim ONE Flyweight World Champion Adriano “Mikinho” Moraes had his initial title reign cut short, when he met Kairat Akhmetov in November of 2015, losing via split decision. It was a close bout, but Akhmetov’s wrestling proved difficult to handle, even for an athlete of Moraes’ caliber. As champion, Moraes was skillful and dominant, and was rarely opposed inside the ONE Championship cage. In his most recent bout, Moraes secured the Interim Flyweight World Title with a victory over Tilek Batyrov. The rematch with Akhmetov will determine the rightful owner of ONE Championship gold in a highly-anticipated title unification bout.

32-year-old Toni “Dynamite” Tauru of Utti, Finland, is a professional martial arts athlete competing in ONE Championship’s bantamweight division. He owns a record of 11 wins and five losses, including one draw, with eight of his wins coming impressively by submission. A feared grappling specialist, Tauru is a former European MMA champion and has shown an incredible ability to finish his opponents with high-level techniques. Now, Tauru is tasked to take on Leandro Issa.

Leandro “Brodinho” Issa is a 33-year-old Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion black belt from Sao Paulo, Brazil, who trains and competes out of the world-renowned Evolve Fight Team in Singapore. With a record of 13 wins and six losses, including nine wins by submission and one by knockout, Issa has proven to be an exciting competitor with a penchant for spectacular victories. A pioneer of ONE Championship’s bantamweight division, Issa returns to the cage to face Toni Tauru.

Marcin Prachnio is a Polish martial arts athlete with an impressive 12-2 professional record. He’s on a seven bout win-streak, including five wins by devastating technical knockout. He is currently unbeaten in ONE Championship, overcoming three tough challenges in Alexandre Machado, Leandro Ataides, and most recently, Jake Butler. Prachnio is now ready to make his return to the ONE Championship cage to stake his claim as one of the top contenders for the middleweight title. Prachnio’s next assignment is the veteran Gilberto Galvão.

Gilberto “Giba” Galvão is a 35-year-old martial arts veteran from Sao Paulo, Brazil, with extensive experience in the sport of mixed martial arts. A solid top contender at middleweight, Galvao has competed largely in Brazil and has compiled 29 total victories, more than half of which have ended in submissions. In his last bout, Galvao debuted for the promotion with a stunning victory over Japanese veteran Tatsuya Mizuno. The exceptional grappler is back and will take on Marcin Prachnio.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with ESPN for Combate Clásico” said Combate Americas CEO and UFC co-founder Campbell McLaren. “Combate Clásico is the MMA version of ‘El Clásico,’ with rival fighters from Barcelona and Madrid facing off against each other in our main event.”

In addition to streaming live on ESPN3, “Combate Clásico” will broadcast live on ESPN in Latin America.

The “Combate Clásico” live MMA event will be part of a nearly week-long sports and entertainment extravaganza featuring concerts, parties and other interactive events, beginning with marquee soccer clubs Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain facing off at Hard Rock Stadium on July 26 and culminating with El Clásico Miami on July 29, a meeting between global soccer powers Real Madrid C.F. and FC Barcelona, also at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla.

The match, which marks the clubs’ first meeting in North America and the first outside of Spain since 1982, is part of the International Champions Cup presented by Heineken and aligns the world’s fastest-growing MMA franchise with soccer’s most talked-about event of the year. The International Champions Cup will air on ESPN (English), ESPN Deportes (Spanish) and on ESPN throughout Mexico and Central America July 18 – 30.

Tickets for “Combate Clásico” are on sale at Ticketon.com.

In the main event of a 10-bout affair that kicks off at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN3, two of the top pound-for-pound fighters representing rival cities in Spain – Tommy “The Spaniard” Aaron (4-2) from Barcelona and Javier Fuentes (9-4) of Madrid – will face off at a catchweight of 160 pounds two days before El Clásico Miami.

The power-punching Aaron, 22, cemented his status as one of the West Coast’s most dangerous prospects with a blistering, first-round knockout win over Austin Wilson last June in Burbank, Calif.

The 27-year-old Fuentes is an aggressive-minded and fast-paced competitor who has earned all of his professional career victories to date by way of (T)KO or submission, including last February’s championship win over Simone “Popina” Botino.

In the “Combate Clásico” co-main event, grappling sensation Kyra “Mogwai” Batara (5-4) of Las Vegas, Nev. battles bitter rival and Judo black belt Vanesa Rico (2-2) of Alicante, Spain in atomweight (105 pounds) action.

Elsewhere on the card, featherweight (145 pounds) attraction Ricky “El Gallero” Palacios (8-1) of Mission, Texas looks to keep his five-fight winning streak alive opposite budding division prospect and Nate Diaz protégé Chris Avila (5-4) of Stockton, Calif.

Two world title bouts headline CES MMA 45 lineup

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (July 14th, 2017) — Returning to its home base of Twin River Casino for the first time in nearly three months, CES MMA is bringing out the heavy artillery for its next AXS TV showcase.

“CES MMA 45,” scheduled for Friday, Aug. 11th, 2017, live on AXS TV Fights, features two world-title bouts, including the long-awaited return of reigning CES MMA Heavyweight Champion Ashley Gooch (10-5, 7 KOs) defending the strap against fan-favorite Juliano Coutinho (7-3, 3 KOs), plus longtime regional stalwarts Saul Almeida (19-8, 1 KO) of Framingham, Mass., and Pedro Gonzalez (11-5) of nearby Gloucester battling for the promotion’s Interim Featherweight World Title.

The two five-round championship bouts headline another stacked card for the region’s leading mixed martial arts promotion, including six televised bouts on AXS TV, beginning at 9 p.m. ET. The five-fight preliminary card, which begins at 7, features four action-packed bouts, including the long-awaited professional debuts of regional featherweights John Douma of Providence, R.I., and Billy Keenan of Salem, Mass., who earned a promotional contract with CES MMA by way of victory in his amateur finale at “CES MMA 43.”

All fights and fighters are subject to change.

The Almeida-Gonzalez title bout is a long time coming for both fighters. One of the most polarizing figures in regional MMA, Almeida makes his 11th appearance with CES MMA, the only fighter on the Aug. 11th card with the distinction of having fought on CES MMA’s inaugural event in September of 2010.

Coming off a big win over Josh LaBerge at “CES MMA 42,” Almeida now gets his long-awaited title shot against the resurgent Gonzalez, who earned his opportunity with a submission win over Bruno Dias at “CES MMA 43.” Amidst a myriad of last-minute cancellations and injuries that limited him to just two bouts during a 16-month stretch, the Gloucester native carries a five-fight win streak into next month’s title bout and hasn’t lost since 2012.

In a highly-anticipated regional showdown that could steal the spotlight Aug. 11th, rising lightweight star Nate Andrews (10-1, 5 KOs) of East Providence, R.I., puts his four-fight win streak on the line against Maine native Bruce Boyington (14-10, 8 KOs), a veteran of 24 professional fights and a three-time World Series of Fighting (WSOF) vet.

Also on the main card, Cranston, R.I., welterweight Gary Balletto Jr. (3-1, 1 KO) makes his television debut against Hooksett, N.H., vet Nick Alley (3-1, 1 KO). Balletto carries a three-fight win streak into next month’s bout, most recently dismantling Chris Torres by first-round submission on the preliminary card of “CES MMA 42.”

Unbeaten Milford, Mass., bantamweight Kris Moutinho (4-0, 1 KO) battles Erie, Pa., native Brandon Seyler (6-5-1, 1 KO), who makes his second appearance with CES MMA, and undefeated female flyweight Maria Rivera (2-0, 1 KO) of Framingham makes her network television debut and third appearance with CES MMA, facing 29-year-old Mandy Polk (3-3) of Germantown, Tenn. Moutinho is off to a flying start as a pro with wins in all four of his bouts under the guidance of CES MMA, including an impressive unanimous decision win over seven-fight vet Lloyd Reyes at “CES MMA 42.”

Highlighting the preliminary card, Salem’s Keenan faces fellow debut Timothy Tyler of Pennsauken, N.J. Keenan earned his spot at “CES MMA 43,” submitting Cody Dickershaid in the first round of his final amateur bout. The 20-year-old Douma turns pro against Jason Rine (0-2) of Danville, Ohio, following wins in each of his last three amateur bouts.

Also on the preliminary card, bantamweight Richie Santiago (4-0, 1 KO) puts his unbeaten record on the line against Queens, N.Y., vet Miguel Restrepo (4-3-1, 2 KOs). The 4-0 Santiago, 24, finished each of his four fights by submission, most recently at “CES MMA 43” against Chad Kelly. Restrepo returns to Rhode Island after challenging unbeaten bantamweight Carlos Candelario at “CES MMA 41.”

Ludlow, Mass., lightweight Leon Davis (8-3, 1 KO) returns to face Andrew Osborne (7-10, 2 KOs), the two-time CES MMA vet and North Carolina native who now lives and trains in North Providence, R.I.
