Strong M-1 Challenge 77 main card set Viktor Nemkov takes on Ronny Markes In light heavyweight showdown

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (May 10, 2017) – Former two-time M-1 Challenge light heavyweight champion Viktor Nemkov will take on M-1 Global-debuting Ronny Markes, May 19, in the M-1 Challenge 77 main event at Sochi, Russia.

M-1 Challenge 77 will be streamed in high definition on www.M1Global.TVlive from Sochi, Russia. Viewers will be able to watch the preliminary fights and main card by logging on to register at www.M1Global.TV. Fans may watch all the action on their computers, as well as on Android and Apple smart phones and tablets.

A native of Kazakhstan fighting out of Russia, Nemkov (24-6-0, M-1: 17-5-0) has once again fought his way back to the top of the M-1 light heavyweight class. In 2013, Nemkov defeated Vasily Babich (11-8-0), by way of a second-round submission (arm-lock), at M-1 Challenge 66, for the vacant M-1 Challenge light heavyweight title.

Nemkov lost his first title defense by a five-round split decision to German Stephan Puetz, who Nemkov gained revenge from four fights later, taking a five-round majority decision in the M-1 Challenge 63 Fight of the Night to regain the coveted M-1 crown.

In his first title defense of his second reign, Nemkov lost his title via a five-round split decision to Rashid Yusupov (8-0), a year ago at M-1 Challenge 68. The resilient Nemkov will position himself for yet another title shot with an impressive victory against Markes.

Markes (16-4-0, M-1: 0-0-0), of Brazil, will be making his M-1 Global debut against Nemkov. In his last fight this past February, Markes choked out 15-4-0 Tony Lopez in the opening round of their King of the Cage super heavyweight championship match. Markes is a UFC and World Series of Fighting veteran

The M-1 Challenge 77 main card is stacked with entertaining, evenly-matched fights, including a potentially explosive throw-down between undefeated Russian middleweight prospect Artiom Frolov (8-0-0, M-1: 5-0-0) and always dangerous Talekh “The Azerbaijan Terminator” Nadzhafzade (5-1-1 (M-1: 2-0-1).

Russian featherweight Viktor Kolesnik (9-2-1, M-1: 0-0-1) vs. Brazlian Felipe Rego (10-3-0, M-1: 0-1-0), Ukrainian welterweight Audrey “Iron” Lezhnev (15-7-0, M-1: 3-3-0) vs. Russian Kurbanali Abdusalamov, and Georgian lightweight Raul Tutarauli (9-3-0, M-1: 4-1-0) vs. M-1 Global pro-debuting Artur Lemos (8-2-0), of Portugal, are also scheduled to be in main-card action.

Soukhamthath to receive honor at CES MMA 44

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (May 10th, 2017) — As it continues to enhance its reputation as the preeminent “Gateway to the UFC,” CES MMA is teaming with Rhode Island’s city of Woonsocket to honor its most recent success story.

On Friday, May 12, during the preliminary card of “CES MMA 44” at Twin River Casino, Woonsocket, R.I., native, former CES MMA World Champion and current Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) bantamweight Andre Soukhamthath will receive the “Key to the City” from Woonsocket Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt.

The 28-year-old Soukhamthath, now 11-4, made his CES MMA debut in February of 2012 — just his second fight as a professional — and finished 11-2 with the promotion over the next four and a half years, including his nationally-televised win over fellow Woonsocket native Kody Nordby for the then-vacant CES MMA World Bantamweight Title at “CES MMA 33” in March of 2016.

Following a win over Kin Moy in August, his record 11th win with CES MMA, Soukhamthath debuted with the UFC at UFC 209 in Las Vegas, becoming the first fighter of Laotian descent to fight for the promotion.

In addition to his reign as the CES MMA World Bantamweight Champion, Soukhamthath was also named the CES MMA Fighter of the Year in 2012 and owns the promotion’s longest win streak with seven consecutive victories between 2012 and 2014.

After moving to Woonsocket in 2003 at the age of 15, Soukhamthath quickly became a staple within the community, starring as a goaltender for the Woonsocket High School boys’ soccer team, where he still holds the school record for most shutouts in a season. He was a two-time All-Division standout and team captain and MVP his senior season.

Soukhmathath also played varsity basketball for four years, performed in the school’s theatrical version of “Jesus Christ Superstar” and ran the youth boxing program at the Woonsocket Boxing Club for two years in addition to winning a Rocky Marciano Tournament title as an amateur at Woonsocket’s famed Stadium Theater.

“The city of Woonsocket is proud to witness the success that its beloved son, Andre Soukhamthath, has experienced early on in his professional career,” said Baldelli-Hunt. “Within our community, Andre stands as a role model for those who work hard in order to reach their goals and achieve results. The support of the entire city of Woonsocket is behind Andre as he continues to accomplish great things while representing the city that holds him close to its heart.”

Soukhamthath will be in attendance Friday as a cornerman for fellow Rhode Islander and teammate Sean Soriano (9-5, 4 KOs), who returns to the Ocean State for the first time in five years on the main card of “CES MMA 44” in a televised featherweight bout against Jacob Bohn (5-2, 1 KO).

Tickets for “CES MMA 44” are priced at $40.00, $55.00, $100.00 and $125.00 (VIP) and can be purchased online at www.cesboxing.com, www.twinriver.com, www.ticketmaster.com or www.cagetix.com/ces by phone at 401-724-2253/2254 or at the Twin River Casino Players Club. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Reigning CES MMA World Featherweight Champion Matt Bessette (21-7, 6 KOs) of Stafford, Conn., makes his second title defense in the five-round main event against Texas’ Rey Trujillo (22-18, 15 KOs).

Providence heavyweight Greg Rebello (21-7, 13 Kos) returns in a scheduled three-round bout against Colorado’s Kevin Ray Sears (6-3, 3 KOs) and welterweights Jon Manley (9-3) of Adams, Mass., and Manny Walo (11-2, 2 KOs) of Jersey City, N.J., clash in a CES MMA title eliminator with the winner facing reigning world champion Chris Curtis.

Light heavyweight Mike Rodriguez (6-2, 4 KOs) of Quincy, Mass., who has made quick work of his last two opponents in a combined 46 seconds, jumps right back in on the main card “CES MMA 44” against New Jersey’s Alec Hooben (5-2, 1 KO) and undefeated flyweight Carlos Candelario (5-0, 1 KO) of New Britain, Conn., faces Brooklyn’s Timothy Wheeler (2-2).

Rodriguez set a new CES MMA record with his 7-second knockout win over Hector Sanchez in January and pummeled James Dysard in just 39 seconds at “CES MMA 43,” earning him his third appearance on AXS TV Fights on May 12th. Candelario, a rising star in the flyweight division, makes his fifth appearance with CES MMA after submitting Miguel Restrepo in January.

The preliminary card features the return of three-time CES MMA vet Toby Oden (2-1, 1 KO) of Milford, Mass., making his first appearance since 2015 plus two exciting female bouts. Oden faces Paul Sims of Philadelphia, who makes his professional debut. Oden last fought at “CES MMA 29,” scoring a first-round knockout win over Wayne Alhquist.

Also on the preliminary card, renowned bantamweight prospect Kerri Kenneson of Hooksett, N.H., debut against unbeaten Jennifer Norris (3-0, 1 KO) of Baltimore.

Milford, Conn., middleweight Justin Sumter (3-1, 2 KOs), who earned an impressive first-round knockout win in his CES MMA debut at “CES MMA 43” in Massachusetts, returns to face unbeaten Sandwich, Mass., native Brian Sparrow (2-0), who makes his second appearance with CES MMA in his first fight since 2013. Middleweight Adam Quitt (1-4) of Framingham, Mass., ends his three-year layoff against Brazilian Reginaldo Felix (0-2).

CES MMA reigns as pioneer for female combat sports

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (May 4th, 2017) — Over the past 25 years, longtime boxing promoter Jimmy Burchfield Sr. has been an advocate for women’s combat sports, opening the door for many female fighters to achieve their lifelong dream at a time when other promoters refused to take such risks.

Add cage doors to that list.

In recent months, CES MMA, which Burchfield proudly launched in 2010, has surfaced as a leader in the development of female fighters, a tradition that continues next Friday at Twin River Casino on May 12th with two exciting female bouts on the preliminary card of “CES MMA 44,” the first time in its eight-year history the promotion has hosted more than one female bout on the same card.

CES, which helped launch the career of former three-time world champion boxer Jamie Clampitt, former world lightweight title-holder Elizabeth Mueller, two-time world champion Missy Fiorentino, former World Boxing Council middleweight world champion Kali Reis, world-title challenger Aleksandra Magdziak Lopes and two-time world champion Shelly Vincent, among others, is now fostering opportunities for females in mixed martial arts.

After featuring regional standouts Kaline Medeiros, Sarah Payant and The Ultimate Fighter and Invicta alum Peggy Morgan (including Morgan’s nationally televised win over Jessy Miele on AXS TV at “CES MMA 30”), CES MMA has successfully guided Framingham, Mass., flyweight Maria Rivera to a 2-0 record in 2017 and will feature Rivera in one of two preliminary bouts next Friday.

Rivera battles debut flyweight Marisa Messer-Belenchia of New Haven, Conn., while bantamweight Jennifer Norris (3-0, 1 KO) of Baltimore puts her unbeaten record on the line against debut Kerri Kenneson of Hookset, N.H.

The popularity and allure of female MMA is indisputable; Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) president Dana White, who in 2011 infamously declared women will never fight in the UFC, is now featuring female championship bouts as Pay Per View headliners, utilizing the worldwide appeal of stars such as Ronda Rousey, Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes.

Given CES MMA’s well-deserved reputation as a gateway to the UFC (regional stars Rob Font, Andre Soukhamthath, John Howard and Tateki Matsudi are among several standouts who carved their path to the UFC through CES MMA), this year’s talented crop of female fighters is confident in the ability of the region’s No. 1 MMA promotion to do the same for their blossoming careers.

“I am so excited to be on this card and be a part of this promotion,” Kenneson said. “It’s been a platform for people to make the jump and it’s definitely something that’s been on my mind.”

“I’m doing this to make it to the next level. I don’t want to be a regional fighter. I’m doing this to fight on the national level. I’m sure CES can get me there.”

Added Belenchia: “I like to be a part of history. Promoters are definitely doing more to help female fighters. The sport is growing daily for females.”

CES’ persistence in female combat sports dates back to the turn of the century when Burchfield developed the career of Mueller, the Waterford, Conn., lightweight who starred during CES’ early days at the Rhodes-on-the-Pawtuxet in Rhode Island and Foxwoods Resort Casino. Mueller went on to face Clampitt in 2001 as Burchfield continued to promote mega-bouts in the female division while other promoters distanced themselves from women’s boxing.

“At the time, promoters weren’t putting women on. It was still a sideshow,” recalled Clampitt, who ended a spectacular, 29-fight career in 2013. “Once Jimmy signed me, he continued to get me fights. He never hesitated to put me on a card.

“With Jimmy, he treated me like a boxer, not just a female fighter. I was always one of his athletes. He treated me as an equal to the other fighters. I remember sitting in his office telling him I wanted to fight Mia St. John and he said, ‘Let’s make it happen.’ Whenever I wanted a fight, he believed in me. I was putting in the work, so why shouldn’t I have the same opportunities as male fighters?

“I tell everyone, ‘If you do your thing, he’ll do his thing.’ He doesn’t care who you are as long as you work hard. Jimmy definitely helped the sport grow.”

Under Burchfield’s guidance, Clampitt went on to face women’s boxing pioneer Jane Couch — Britian’s first licensed female boxer — twice, including their 2004 bout named Ring Magazine’s Women’s Fight of the Year, and earned her dream match against St. John in 2007 in Providence, defeating the 65-fight vet and former two-time world champion to capture the then vacant International Women’s Boxing Federation (IWBF) World Lightweight Championship.

“At a time when few people took women’s boxing seriously, Jimmy was there,” said Jill Diamond, former co-chair of the WBC and North American Boxing Federation (NABF) women’s division and current WBC International Secretary.

“Champions like Jamie Clampitt and Missy Fiorentino won the hearts of many boxing fans thanks to Jimmy and CES’ support, so, it’s only natural, now that opportunities have expanded for female athletes, that Jimmy and his team would be in the forefront, fighting the good fight and bringing new women stars into the mix.

“Jimmy stood with us early on. Gender was never an issue. Talent ruled. And no matter what Jimmy does, he will always do the women proud.”

Though the sport has advanced tremendously in recent years, as evident by Rousey’s quick rise to fame both in the cage and in popular culture, female MMA fighters faced — and, in some cases, still face — many of the same challenges female boxers endured decades ago.

“When I first walked into [Team Link in Ludlow, Mass.], it was obviously very intimidating as a female in a gym filled with guys,” Kenneson said. “When I started, I was the only girl doing MMA here. We used to have problems in the past finding opponents. I’ve gone extended periods of time without fighting. We’re definitely getting more opportunities now.”

“Even when I wanted to wrestle 10, 15 years ago, it was a far-fetched crazy thing. No one wanted to practice with women,” recalled Messer-Belenchia, who is also a certified personal trainer and a former two-time Western New England Golden Gloves champion as an amateur boxer.

“Years ago, Dana White said women would never fight. In some cases, women have had to work harder than men to prove themselves and earn respect. All I want is respect. I’m going to show up to fight and work as hard as you will. Today, when I watch female fights on TV, a lot of them are using better technique. To me, it’s exciting to see how far we’ve come.”

The tradition continues May 12th as CES MMA ushers in the next era of female stars with two exciting women’s bouts on its preliminary card beginning at 7 p.m. ET. The promoter who helped cultivate an environment of acceptance in female boxing more than two decades ago is once again bridging the gap in one of the world’s fastest-growing sports.

“It’s been a pleasure fighting with CES on and off during the last eight years,” Lopes said. “My first five fights took place on CES shows and, looking back at it, I really appreciate that Mr. Burchfield gave me the opportunity to earn several wins and build up my fan base right out of the gate.

“CES team is very well organized, from matchmaking to marketing and managing logistics. During the last event one of the aspect I appreciated the most is excellent communication between my team and the promotional group regarding ticket sales, organizational details, etc. CES also does a great job providing exposure to fighters through press releases, social media and arranging interviews.”

The AXS TV broadcast begins at 9.

Also on the main card, Woonsocket, R.I., native and three-time Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) vet Sean Soriano (9-5, 4 KOs) makes his long-awaited homecoming in a featherweight bout against New Yorker Jacob Bohn (5-2, 1 KO), Soriano’s first fight in Rhode Island since his CES MMA debut in 2012 when he knocked out Lee Metcalf at “CES MMA 9.”

As an added bonus, fellow Woonsocket native and Blackzillians teammate, UFC bantamweight Andre Soukhamthath, will also return to his home state to work Soriano’s corner against Bohn. The two have combined for 15 CES MMA appearances, including Soriano’s last bout inside the CES cage at “CES MMA 38” on AXS TV against UFC vet Levan Makashvili.

“CES MMA 44” also features the return of Providence heavyweight Greg Rebello (21-7, 13 KOs), looking to continue his climb back to the top of the division in a scheduled three-round bout against Colorado’s Kevin Ray Sears (6-3, 3 KOs).

Largest MMA event in The Americas July 14-15 in Monterrey, Mexico

MONTE CARLO, Monaco (May 3, 2017)- The World MMA Association (WMMAA) has announced that its 2017 Pan-American Championships, the largest MMA event ever in The Americas, will be held this coming July 14-15 in Monterrey, Mexico.

National teams from the United States, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Uruguay, Brazil, along with special guest Spain, are expected to compete in the 2017 Pan-American Championships.

“Representing your country on the biggest continental competition of nations, it strikes you, your heart starts to race in anticipation of the grand journey into WMMAA history,” Pan-American Division president Tomas Yu said.

The PAN-AM Board of Directors met again this past month during a collaboration with USA Boxing, during the latter’s 2017 Western Elite Qualifier & Regional Open, when the tentative announcement was made that Monterrey (Mexico) would be the event host this July.

Albuquerque, New Mexico was a leading destination host, however, PAN-AM Board members voted in favor of Monterrey as the ultimate location.

“WMMAA Mexico, as well as Monterrey as the host city this year, is a huge step in the development of the championships and movement as a whole,” Yu added. “Monterrey has been an active sport city. It was the first city to bid on the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics. Monterrey had never bid on an Olympic Game prior to its effort to bid for the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics. The city did host several matches of the 1986 FIFA World Cup.

“The moment we have all been waiting for is finally here as the 2017 Pan-American Championships will take place in Monterrey, Mexico this coming July 14-15. The final decision has been made and now it is time to exhale, relax, and peacefully wait for the upcoming grand event, gathering people from all around the world to watch their country’s athletes competing among the best.”

Bessette makes second title defense at CES MMA 44

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (April 28th, 2017) — CES MMA has upped the ante for its upcoming AXS TV showcase, featuring the return of World Featherweight Champion Matt Bessette, plus an intriguing welterweight bout between two rising prospects vying for their own shot at the title.

Bessette (21-7, 6 KOs), the widely-popular, reigning title-holder in the 145-pound division from Stafford, Conn., headlines “CES MMA 44” live on AXS TV Fights on Friday, May 12th, 2017 at Twin River Casino in a five-round title defense against Oklahoma’s Jeremy Spoon (20-3, 1 KO), Bessette’s second defense since capturing the title in August.

While Bessette’s loyal social media army continues to lobby for his promotion to MMA’s biggest stage, the 32-year-old simply keeps winning fights – six in a row, to be exact – in dominant fashion, including his systematic breakdown of Kevin Croom in January at “CES MMA 41” in which Bessette battered and bruised his opponent en route to a third-round TKO win.

The six-time CES MMA and nine-time Bellator vet now faces the dangerous Spoon, himself a four-time Bellator vet with 12 of his 20 pro wins coming by submission. The 32-year-old Spoon competed in the Seasons 6 and 7 Bellator Featherweight Tournaments, where he fought two-time champion Daniel Straus and Season 8 finalist Mike Richman, and recently defeated two-time Bellator vet Josh Tyler by unanimous decision.

The Bessette-Spoon main event title bout is one of six televised fights on the AXS TV main card, which begins 9 p.m. ET, with the preliminary fight card beginning at 7.

Welterweights Jon Manley (9-3) of Adams, Mass., and Manny Walo (11-2, 2 KOs) of Jersey City, N.J., clash in a CES MMA title eliminator with the winner facing reigning world champion Chris Curtis.

Manley, a standout on Season 16 of The Ultimate Fighter, makes his third CES MMA appearance and first since 2015 while Walo returns hoping to earn a second shot at the CES MMA World Welterweight Title following a stunning, 11-second knockout loss to then champion Chuck O’Neil in his first opportunity at “CES MMA 27.” Manley has won his last four, including two appearances with World Series of Fighting (WSOF), and eight of nine overall.

The reigning champion Curtis, now 15-5 overall, recently defended his title at “CES MMA 42,” stopping challenger Wilfredo Santiago via second-round knockout on AXS TV.

Light heavyweight Mike Rodriguez (6-2, 4 KOs) of Quincy, Mass., who has made quick work of his last two opponents in a combined 46 seconds, jumps right back in on the main card “CES MMA 44” against New Jersey’s Alec Hooben (5-2, 1 KO) and undefeated flyweight Carlos Candelario (5-0, 1 KO) of New Britain, Conn., faces Grand Rapid, Mich., native Shawn Mack (6-2, 1 KO).

Also on the preliminary card, undefeated female flyweight Maria Rivera (2-0, 1 KO) of Framingham, Mass., returns for the third time since January in a three-round bout against New Haven, Conn., pre debut Marisa Messer-Belenchia while renowned bantamweight prospect Kerri Kenneson of Hooksett, N.H., debut against unbeaten Jennifer Norris (3-0, 1 KO) of Baltimore.

In data released by Nielsen, Facebook and Repucom, ONE Championship has shown exponential growth from 2014 to 2017.

The data shows that ONE has come from 352 million social media impressions to 4-billion, marking an increase of over 11 times the previous tally. Evloev stops Nevzorov to capture Interim M-1 Challenge bantamweight title

NAZRAN, Ingushetia, Russia (April 23, 2017) – Undefeated Movsar Evloev captured the Interim M-1 Challenge bantamweight title in last night’s M-1 Challenge 76 main event at Nazran, Ingushetia, Russia.

Evloev improved his professional MMA record to 7-0-0, all in M-1 Challenge events, by knocking out Russian Alexey Nevzorov (12-3-0, M-1: 6-2-0) in the second round.

Evloev, who was coming off an impressive three-round decision over American Lee Morrison, took advantage of his opportunity to fight for the interim title, due to a long-term injury to reigning M-1 Challenge bantamweight champion Pavel Vitruk.

The judges were busy as seven of the other nine fights on the M-1 Challenge 76 card went the full distance. Fighters represented six different countries on this highly-competitive card.

Russian featherweight Timur Nagibin (9-2-0, M-1: 5-1-0) and Kazakhstan bantamweight Sergey Morozov (7-2-0, M-1: 4-2-0) were both winners by way of three-round unanimous decision, respectively, over their Brazilian opponents Diego Davella (18-6-0, M-1: 1-1-0) and Fabricio “Bill” Sarraff (22-10-0 (M-1: 0-1-0).

German light heavyweight Rene Hoppe (7-0-0, M-1: 2-0-0) extended his unbeaten streak to seven in a row, taking a three-round majority decision over previously undefeated Ike Bochkov (2-1-0, M-1: 0-1-0), of Russia.

Russian light heavyweight Abubakar Mestoev improved to 5-0-0 with his fifth straight win overall and in M-1 Challenge events with a three-round decision over Ukrainian Anatoly Lyagu (5-2-0, M-1: 0-1-0).

Russian bantamweight Emil Abasov (6-7-0, M-1: 3-0-0), who filled in at the weigh in due to the original opponent being too overweight, pulled off the upset of the night with a first-round technical knockout (punches) against Heliton Davella (15-6-0, M-1: 0-1-0), of Brazil.

Fighting on the preliminary card, Russian Zalimbeg Omarov (8-2-1, M-1: 5-1-1), Russian welterweight Khamzat Sakalov (6-1-0, M-1: 5-0-0) and Russian heavyweight Evgeni Gioncharov (6-3-0, M-1: 1-0-0) were all winners by three-round decision, respectively, against Ukrainian Elnur Valiev (6-1-1, M-1: 0-1-0), Spaniard Javier Fuentas (9-5-0, M-1: 2-2-0) and Russian Daniil Arepyev (7-2-0, M-1: 0-2-0).

Russian welterweight Ingishkhan Ozdoev (3-3-0, M-1 3-3-0) stopped Alexey Valivakhin (8-6-0, M-1: 0-1-0) on punches in the second round.

EDUARD FOLAYANG RETAINS ONE LIGHTWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WITH UNANIMOUS DECISION OVER EV TING

21 April 2017 – Manila, Philippines: The largest sports media property in Asian history, ONE Championship™ (ONE), sent shockwaves throughout the capacity crowd at the state-of-the-art Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines with another exciting evening of world-class mixed martial arts action. ONE: KINGS OF DESTINY showcased a series of compelling bouts, punctuated by a thrilling main event that left fans on the edge of their seats. In the main event, Eduard Folayang successfully defended his ONE Lightweight World Championship, defeating Ev Ting by unanimous decision.

In the main event of ONE: KINGS OF DESTINY, Eduard Folayang retained his ONE Lightweight World Championship with a masterful display of striking to defeat top Malaysian lightweight Ev “E.T.” Ting. Operating behind his world-class wushu stance, Folayang dazzled with his trademark variety of lightning quick and powerful spinning attacks, pouncing on Ting with side kicks and back fists. Controlling the action from the outside with the intent to counter, Folayang allowed Ting to come forward with his attacks which were few and far between. In the end, all three judges agreed on Folayang winning a unanimous decision to remain champion after five thrilling rounds of intense action.

After the bout, eight-division world Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao congratulated Folayang inside the ONE Championship cage.

“I would like to thank Ev Ting, he really came prepared for this fight. We came to give the fans a good fight, and that’s what we have done,” said Folayang. “This is the essence of martial arts, five rounds to show how much we’ve prepared for a long time. [This fight] means a lot. A lot of you [fans] were discouraged the last time I was here, I slept on that mat. I rose up from my circumstances. I needed to train a lot to improve a lot. This is it on my shoulder. Thank you for your support.”

In the co-main event of the evening, Team Lakay top bantamweight Kevin “The Silencer” Belingon swarmed Finnish kickboxing sensation Toni “Dynamite” Tauru with a relentless barrage of attacks to earn a scintillating striking victory. Tauru, the taller fighter by over 10cm, used his length to keep Belingon at range but it was only a matter of time before the Filipino would come looking for the stoppage. Tauru tried his best to keep the distance, but Belingon launched a furious offensive to close the gap, pounding Tauru with thunderous lefts and rights. In the end, Tauru had no choice but to bow out of the contest via verbal submission.

With another spectacular performance, resurgent lightweight contender and former ONE Featherweight World Champion Honorio “The Rock” Banario marched to victory once more, stopping newcomer Jaroslav Jartim with a monstrous left hook. After spending the first round on the mat with Jartim in technical grappling exchanges, Banario showcased his incredible power in the second round. Catching a kick to the body, Banario uncorked a devastating left hand counter that knocked Jartim out cold, effectively ending the bout in an instant.

It was a triumphant return to the ONE Championship cage for 18-year-old Christian Lee. “The Warrior” turned in a tremendous showing against Chinese featherweight “The Werewolf” Wan Jian Ping, dazzling the crowd with his quickness and trademark unorthodox movement. After mixing up his strikes very well, Lee shot in for a successful takedown, bringing Wan to the canvas. Once on the mat, it was all Christian Lee as the youngster went to work, pounding the Chinese fighter with sharp elbows and punches to earn the stoppage victory.

With an astounding display of gargantuan strength, Team Lakay top flyweight prospect Danny “The King” Kingad out-muscled Malaysian opponent Muhammad Aiman to win by unanimous decision after three fierce back-and-forth rounds. Kingad, who enjoyed most of the fight with successful takedowns of his Malaysian foe, punished Aiman with elbows and knees from dominant positions. In the third round, Aiman caught Kingad in a triangle but the Filipino powered himself out of it and earned the judges’ nod.

In an entertaining flyweight contest, Indonesian standout Stefer Rahardian dominated unorthodox Filipino striker Eugene Toquero with his effective chain wrestling skills, winning by unanimous decision after three rounds of action. For the majority of the bout, Rahardian took Toquero down seemingly at will, and the Filipino spent most of the fight defending off his back. In the third round, Toquero made things interesting by landing a couple of telling blows but it was not enough to offset Rahardian’s superior ground control.

19-year-old Chinese bantamweight prospect “The Stalker” Xie Bin showcased his tremendous grappling skills in defeating Cambodian Khun Khmer specialist Chan Rothana. After a brief feeling out period for both fighters, Xie scored on a takedown to bring the action to the mat. The second round saw Xie score on another takedown, this time working towards a submission. With Rothana completely out of his element, Xie was able to grab a hold of his opponent’s neck, executing a D’Arce choke to seal the win.

Team Lakay lady striker Gina “Conviction” Iniong made her successful ONE Championship debut, besting Filipino-English fighter Natalie “The Kilapino” Gonzales Hills with a solid display of striking superiority. Looking to play the role of counterpuncher, Iniong laid back and allowed Hills to press most of the action. Iniong dominated in the clinch with knees to the lower body and scored on a handful of takedowns. She then found a home for her powerful right hand which landed with great accuracy throughout the fight. After three rounds, judges saw the bout in favor of Iniong.

8-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion Michelle Nicolini of Sao Paulo, Brazil extended her winning streak to two wins inside the ONE Championship cage with a beautiful first round armbar over previously unbeaten Irina Mazepa of St. Petersburg, Russia. Nicolini utilized a missed kick from Mazepa to take the Russian fighter to the ground. From there, Nicolini worked her magic, easily taking the bout by submission.

Filipino strawweight fighters Robin Catalan and Jeremy Miado kicked off ONE: KINGS OF DESTINY with a wild exchange of striking and wrestling to get the crowd ready for an exciting night of fights. After three gruelling rounds, Catalan emerged victorious by split decision, impressing with a series of emphatic slams while controlling the action on the mat.

In her last bout, Lee dominated top contender Jenny Huang with a masterful display of striking. She now returns to Singapore to defend her title against Istela Nunes.

Unbeaten female atomweight Istela Nunes of Brazil is a two-time Muay Thai world champion with an unblemished 6-0 professional mixed martial arts record. Her exciting style and knack for delivering powerful strikes makes for exciting fights and is one of the biggest components of her game. In her last bout, Nunes took on top-rated female atomweight Mei Yamaguchi, winning a closely-contested split decision. At her best, Nunes is a well-rounded fighter with a solid striking and grappling skill set. She now takes on the biggest challenge of her young career when she goes head-to-head with ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion Angela Lee in Singapore.

A former NCAA Division I All-American, Ben Askren is a collegiate wrestling legend and one of the finest mixed martial artists in the world today. In just a few fights in ONE, Askren was able to seize the ONE Welterweight World Championship with a resounding technical knockout victory over Nobutatsu Suzuki. Known for his aggressiveness and brute strength, Santos looks to continue his dominance inside the ONE Championship cage in his next bout against Vuyisile Colossa.

34-year-old Vuyisile “The Cheetah” Colossa is a mixed martial arts veteran with an 8-5 professional record. In the ONE: TITLES & TITANS strawweight tournament in August 2016, Matheis defeated both Rustam Hutajulu and Roso Nugroho via scintillating knockouts in one night to be crowned tournament champion. In his next bout, Matheis crosses paths with former champion Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke.

Tiffany “Soul Crusher” Teo is a female mixed martial artist who competes in ONE Championship’s women’s flyweight division. She holds an unblemished professional record of five wins and no losses, including two submissions and two knockouts. Teo is set to make her third appearance inside the ONE Championship cage against Rebecca Heintzman.

Rebecca Heintzman of Binghamton, New York, is a 30-year old female mixed martial artist making her return to the ONE Championship cage. In her last bout with the promotion, Heintzman took on then-rising star Angela Lee, going two solid rounds with the future champion. With great all-around skills, Heintzman had a decorated amateur career, transitioning well into professional MMA. Heintzman’s full arsenal should be on display once again as she faces one of the promotion’s most promising young fighters in Tiffany Teo.

She is of mixed Japanese and Thai heritage, beginning her martial arts training at age nine with aikido and taekwondo. Good times keep rolling for unbeaten Barry

BEVERLY, Mass. (April 14th, 2017) — He got the win — unanimously, to be exact — but wasn’t overly impressed with his performance. Connor Barry wanted to put on more of a show for the fans.

“Personally, I thought it was kind of boring,” Barry said with a laugh.

Such is the mindset of a perfectionist like Barry, the young, up-and-coming lightweight from Holbrook, Mass., who returns to the cage Saturday, April 15th, 2017 at the North Shore Music Theatre on the main card of “CES MMA 43.”

Now 3-0 following his aforementioned win over Travis Foster at “CES MMA 41,” Barry hopes to not only defeat 18-fight vet Andrew Osborne (7-10-1, 3 KOs) of North Carolina on Saturday, but to do so in impressive fashion while steadily improving on his previous performance.

“I think with every fight, I should learn something from it. If I don’t, then I really didn’t benefit from it,” he said. “I always look through my fights and try to pick out one or two things I can improve on.”

The last few months have been a whirlwind for Barry, who fights for the third time since November when he goes toe-to-toe with Osborne, but it wasn’t always this easy finding fights. Seven scheduled bouts fell through during an arduous year-and-a-half stretch between 2014 and 2016, including one at “CES MMA 37” when his opponent, Devin Carrier, tragically passed away a week before the event, but Barry managed to channel his frustration by adhering to the most common adage in combat sports.

“There’s a lot of stuff you can’t control as an individual,” he said, “but you can control your own training and preparation.

Barry stayed ready, even when fights fell through, and quickly realized MMA could be more than just a hobby if he applied himself. Said the former amateur boxer, who won a Silver Mittens title in Massachusetts at the age of 16: “Originally, I used MMA as a crutch, then one day it hit me, ‘Oh, shit, I have to start working my ass off!’ so I began training everyday.”

Soon, the fights started coming one by one. Now Barry is making noise among regional lightweights with the potential to reappear on a number of upcoming CES MMA events during a busy summer for the No. 1 promotion in the northeast.

“I’ve been working my ass off day in, day out. Everything I do is geared toward this sport,” Barry said. “I love it. I think I have a future, but it’s a big sacrifice, a lot of hard work.”

As for Saturday, Barry says his philosophy is to “overestimate” every opponent so he’s not caught off guard when the bell rings, a sound strategy against a cagey veteran like Osborne.

“He’s a good striker, so this will be an exciting fight for the fans,” he said. “I’m very comfortable with standing in front of people. I like throwing bombs, big shots. I just like punching people.”

Saturday is Barry’s third fight with CES MMA since his pro debut in 2015. He’s thankful for the opportunities and ready to claim his spot among the best in the region at 155 pounds.

“CES has been awesome to me. They’ve helped me a lot with promotion and have given me a great opportunity,” Barry said. “I’m excited to put on another show for them.

“I’ve hit a couple of road blocks along the way, but I was ready for all of those fights. Now I’m just training everyday to bang them out one after another. I want as many as I can to stay active.”

The main event of “CES MMA 43” features the return of Gloucester, Mass., featherweight Pedro Gonzalez (11-5), who faces Brazilian Bruno Dias (19-9) of Woburn, Mass., in a battle of submission specialists. Gonzalez (10) and Dias (14) have combined for 24 wins via tap-out. Saturday is Gonzalez’s first fight since last April, nearly one year to the date of “CES MMA 35,” the promotion’s first even at the NSMT.

Tickets for “CES MMA 43” are priced at $45.00, $55.00 and $100.00 (VIP) and are available online at www.cesmma.com, www.nsmt.org, or www.cagetix.com/ces or by phone at 978-232-7200 or 401-724-2253/2254. Doors open at 6 p.m. ET and the first bout begins at 7. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

The event features five professional bouts and six amateur fights on the preliminary portion of the card and airs live online on FloCombat. Users can also stream the event on television using Roku or Apple TV 4.

Also returning April 15th, Somerville, Mass., bantamweight Rico DiSciullo (6-1, 2 KOs) looks to rebound from his first career loss at “CES MMA 38” against David Garcia when he faces former Bellator and CES MMA vet Matt Lozano (8-4, 1 KO) of Lancaster, Pa., on Saturday in an important fight for both sides. Lozano debuted with the promotion at “CES MMA 34,” earning an impressive unanimous decision win over Johnny Campbell.

Quincy, Mass., light heavyweight Mike Rodriguez (6-2, 4 KOs) returns following his record-setting 7-second knockout win over Hector Sanchez at “CES MMA 41” to face New York’s James Dysard (0-1) and Myrtle Beach middleweight Justin Sumter (2-1), now training in Milford, Conn., makes his CES MMA debut in a separate three-round bout against Pawtucket, R.I., vet Abe Pitrowski (6-2, 1 KO).

Similar to its North Shore debut in 2016, CES MMA will feature six amateur bouts on the preliminary card, a tremendous opportunity for the region’s up-and-coming future stars. Unbeaten bantamweight Marquis Brewster earned a promotional contract with CES MMA by winning his amateur finale a year ago at “CES MMA 35” and is now 2-0 since June.

On Saturday, featherweight Billy Keenan (6-2, 2 KOs) of Salem, Mass., faces Schenectady, N.Y., native Cody Dickershaid (7-7, 4 KOs) in the featured amateur bout while bantamweight Yarty Kim (1-0, 1 KO) of Boston battles Mike Kimbel (2-2, 1 KO) of Waterbury, Conn.

Also on the preliminary amateur card, lightweight Jurrell Laronal (1-1, 1 KO) of Dorchester, Mass., takes on Waterbury’s Jordan Riley (1-1), heavyweight Larry Perna (2-1, 2 KOs) from Bronx, N.Y., faces Ron Marshall (1-2) of Hampton, N.H., and Boston light heavyweight Zeal McGrew (2-1) faces Glen Falls, N.Y., vet Harold Ricketts (1-2). Rob Rios (0-4) of Cromwell, Conn., and Dylan Youngblood (0-2) of Pittsburgh, Pa., aim for their first amateur win when they face one another in a bantamweight bout.

Gonzalez faces career-defining bout Saturday

BEVERLY, Mass. (April 13th, 2017) — Sitting at home injured, unable to compete, Pedro Gonzalez could barely stomach watching Matt Bessette win the CES MMA World Featherweight Title in August.

That was supposed to be his fight, his opportunity at bringing a championship back to his hometown of Gloucester, Mass.

“Hat’s off to Bessette. He put on a great show,” Gonzalez said, “but I felt I probably would’ve went home with that title.”

Gonzalez (11-5) may eventually get his shot at Bessette — or whoever has the belt at the time — but, for now, he must handle his business Saturday, April 15th, 2017 at the North Shore Music Theatre when he faces Brazilian Bruno Dias (19-9) of Woburn, Mass., in the main event of “CES MMA 43.”

Saturday is Gonzalez’s first fight since last April, nearly one year to the date of “CES MMA 35,” the promotion’s first even at the NSMT. Injuries forced him to withdraw from his scheduled five-round title bout against Bessette at “CES MMA 37.”

It’s been 12 months since he last competed, which means he’s one year older and one year closer to 30, his self-inflicted deadline to either make it big in MMA or move on with his life outside the cage. With two kids — an 11-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter — and a wedding coming up in September, the 29-year-old Gonzalez knows it’s now or never. This is the year to make something happen and it starts Saturday in Beverly against a dangerous Dias, a submission specialist making his United States debut.

“I have to put my foot down and see what happens,” Gonzalez said. “It’s been a long road and I’m only getting older.

“It’s sad to say, but because of this fight game I’ve lost friends, I even lost a relationship because of it. There are so many things I’ve had to sacrifice, but I wouldn’t change a thing. It’s made me the person I am today and the fighter I am today. It’s kept a fire under my ass.”

Even today, with fight night just 72 hours away, Gonzalez is battling a cold as he puts the finishing touches on training camp — “It’s always something,” he said sheepishly — but it’ll take more than that to derail him this time. While he admits he hasn’t studied much film on Dias, he knows what to expect and knows where his own strengths lie.

“I’m fighting through this. I’m going to win Saturday and that’s all that matters,” he said.

“Bruno has a good ground game, but his standup is terrible,” Gonzalez said, referring to Dias’ limited experience as a professional boxer. “He has no boxing skills. You can tell he took boxing matches for money, which is fine, but I think my standup is going to be superior, and that’s where the fight will play out.

“He’ll try to take me down right away, but he’ll be surprised with my takedown defense. I’m hoping to get a knockout in this fight.”

Depending on how Saturday goes, Gonzalez wants to get right back in the cage on the next CES MMA event, even in May if, by some chance, Bessette’s scheduled bout against Jeremy Spoon at “CES MMA 44” falls through, a not-so-subtle hint that he still wants his title shot against the reigning champ.

“If he’s still around and not called up by then or if he’s still the champ, yeah, why not?” Gonzalez said. “He’s one of those guys to beat around here. Nothing against Bessette, he’s always been a good acquaintance and we’re certainly on good terms, but I just want to be right back in there.”

The future is uncertain, but Gonzalez knows the clock is ticking. His children are getting older and he’s been considering how to approach life outside of MMA. He’s considered a career as a laborer once his fighting career is over. For now, the focus is on making one last run at the crown in hopes of accomplishing the lifelong goal everyone up-and-coming fighter strives for.

“My son is going to be in sixth grade next year. He’s playing a lot of sports, and my daughter is very active. I want to be involved more,” he said. “I am now, but I have to sacrifice a little bit sometimes. Every so often, I’m not able to make a baseball or basketball game. I don’t want to be that dad that’s not around.

“I’m looking for something I can lean on a bit, something I can give to my kids.”

Lozano debuted with the promotion at “CES MMA 34,” earning an impressive unanimous decision win over Johnny Campbell.

The “CES MMA 43” main card also features unbeaten Massachusetts lightweight Connor Barry (3-0) of Holbrook making his third CES MMA appearance in a three-round bout against three-time CES MMA vet Andrew Osborne (7-10-1, 3 KOs) of Fayetteville, N.C.

BOUT UPDATES ANNOUNCED FOR ONE: KINGS OF DESTINY IN MANILA

12 April 2017 – Manila, Philippines: The largest sports media property in Asian history, ONE Championship™ (ONE), has just announced updates to bouts scheduled for ONE: KINGS OF DESTINY. Team Lakay lightweight veteran Honorio “The Rock” Banario will now take on Jaroslav Jartim of Czech Republic as original opponent Rob Lisita has pulled out of the bout due to personal reasons. In addition, top featherweight prospect Christian “The Warrior” Lee of Singapore will now face Wan Jian Ping of China after Lee’s original opponent Keanu Subba suffered an injury during training camp.

Ticket information for ONE: KINGS OF DESTINY is available at www.onefc.com

Team Lakay’s Honorio “The Rock” Banario has long been one of the Philippines’ most respected mixed martial arts veterans. His tremendous cage experience has brought him all over Asia, in many memorable battles against top divisional talent. Among his many skills, Banario’s strength lies in striking, although he has recently exhibited a vastly-improved grappling game. The former ONE Featherweight World Champion, Banario is ready to once again showcase his world-class wushu skills and lightning-quick strikes against Jaroslav Jartim.

Prague-based mixed martial artist Jaroslav Jartim of Czech Republic will make his ONE Championship debut at lightweight this April. Jartim sports a professional MMA record of seven wins and five losses including one draw. Of his seven victories, three have come by submission and three by knockout. The Penta Gym Prague representative is set to make his first appearance inside the ONE Championship cage in Manila against Team Lakay veteran lightweight Honorio Banario.

18-year-old Christian “The Warrior” Lee, younger brother of reigning ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion “Unstoppable” Angela Lee, began his professional mixed martial arts career on an absolute tear, railing off five straight victories by thrilling finish while only encountering one setback. He has impressed fans with his ability to seek out stoppage wins over top caliber opponents. Known as an unpredictable striker with unorthodox grappling technique, Lee is now set to return to the ONE Championship cage, this time against Wan Jian Ping.

Wan “Werewolf” Jian Ping is a mixed martial artist from China with a 2-1 professional record. Following his promotional debut against countryman Bu Huo You Ga in 2016, Wan makes his return to the ONE Championship cage gunning for victory. The Shanghai-based grappler is well-versed in all forms of combat, from striking to wrestling and will now look to test his skills against rising young featherweight star Christian Lee.

CES MMA returns to the North Shore this weekend

BEVERLY, Mass. (April 10th, 2017) — Fight week fever has gripped the North Shore this week as CES MMA returns to Beverly featuring today’s premier fighters and tomorrow’s stars.

“CES MMA 43,” scheduled for Saturday, April 15th, 2017 at 7 p.m. ET at the historic North Shore Music Theatre, is CES MMA’s second show in a 15-day stretch, hectic pace that featured Chris Curtis retaining his CES MMA World Welterweight Title in March and could conclude Saturday with several regional standouts stating their case for a shot at a world title.

The event features five professional bouts and six amateur fights on the preliminary portion of the card.

Gloucester, Mass., featherweight Pedro Gonzalez (11-5) ends a 12-month layoff when he faces Brazilian Bruno Dias (19-9) of Woburn, Mass., in Saturday’s main event.

Injuries forced Gonzalez to withdraw from his scheduled world title bout against Matt Bessette at “CES MMA 37” in August. Bessette went on to win the CES MMA World Featherweight Title against Joe Pingitore and will defend it for the first time against Jeremy Spoon at “CES MMA 44” in May, but a win by Gonzalez this weekend could set the stage for his long-awaited shot at the belt if both he and Bessette make it through the spring unscathed.

What about Diaz? The Brazilian submission specialists — a staggering 14 of his 19 wins have come by forcing his opponent to tap — is in desperate need of a win after dropping his last two on foreign soil in Russia, but dethroning Gonzalez, who has won his last four, in his own United States debut immediately puts him in the conversation among elite 145-pounders in the northeast.

Somerville, Mass., bantamweight Rico DiSciullo (6-1, 2 KOs) finds himself in a similar spot, needing a win after suffering his first career loss at “CES MMA 38” against David Garcia. The electrifying prospect faces former Bellator and CES MMA vet Matt Lozano (8-4, 1 KO) of Lancaster, Pa., on Saturday in an important fight for both sides.

Quincy, Mass., light heavyweight Mike Rodriguez (6-2, 4 KOs) returns following his record-setting 7-second knockout win over Hector Sanchez at “CES MMA 41” and Myrtle Beach middleweight Justin Sumter (2-1), now training in Milford, Conn., makes his CES MMA debut in a separate three-round bout against Pawtucket, R.I., vet Abe Pitrowski (6-2, 1 KO).
