LAS VEGAS (Feb. 4, 2014) – The World Series of Fighting returns home to the fight capital of the world for “World Series of Fighting 9: Carl vs. Palhares.”

World Series of Fighting, the Las Vegas-based mixed martial arts promotion, returns to The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas on March 29 with a pair of championship titles on the line, as welterweight title holder Steve Carl (21-3) defends his belt against Brazilian jiu-jitsu master Rousimar “Toquinho” Palhares (15-5) and bantamweight Marlon Moraes (12-4-1), a world-ranked top-10 contender, meets Josh “The Finisher” Rettinghouse (10-2) for the promotion’s inaugural 135-pound championship.

“We are very excited to be returning home for this incredible fight card,” World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo said. “Steve Carl will have a real serious challenge ahead for the first defense of his welterweight title as he faces Rousimar Palhares, and Marlon Moraes vs. Josh Rettinghouse will be an incredible fight and a great way to crown our first bantamweight champion.

“We’re working on a few more fights that we should be able to announce shortly, but fans are really going to love the lineup for this event, and great fights are guaranteed.”

The 29-year-old Carl earned World Series of Fighting’s welterweight belt in October with a dramatic, fourth-round submission win over Josh Burkman. The Iowa native has already earned three victories under the World Series of Fighting banner and currently boasts a seven-fight winning streak.

For his first title defense, Carl now meets submission expert and one of the most feared men in MMA, Rousimar Palhares. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and former Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championship silver medalist, the 33-year-old Palhares is a grappling master who has earned 11 of his 15 career wins by way of submission.

Meanwhile, Moraes has quickly established himself as one of world’s best fighters at 135 pounds and has already earned four wins for the promotion after downing Carson Beebe, Brandon Hempleman, Tyson Nam and Miguel Torres. A former Muay Thai Brazilian national champion, Moraes currently trains under respected MMA legend Ricardo Almeida. The 25-year-old Moraes is currently ranked as the No. 8 bantamweight in the world by Fightmatrix.com.

Moraes now meets Washington’s Rettinghouse. The 23-year-old made his World Series of Fighting debut in October, earning a hard-fought decision win over Olympic wrestling bronze medalist Alexis Vila. Rettinghouse has won his past eight fights, and eight of his 10 career victories have come by stoppage.

Additional fights will be announced shortly.

Tickets for World Series of Fighting 9, which start at just $39, are on sale now at Ticketmaster.com. Tickets can also be purchased at The Joint box office or by phone at (800) 745-3000. Smoldarev vs. Delija headlines ‘M-1 Challenge 45’ Feb. 28 in St. Petersburg, Russia

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (February 4, 2014) — M-1 Global Heavyweight contender Denis Smoldarev headlines M-1 Challenge 45 on Friday night, February 28 against Ante “Walking Trouble” Delija at Atmosphere Show Hall in St. Petersburg, Russia.

The main event is an intriguing heavyweight showdown between Estonia’s undefeated Smoldarev (5-0-0, 2 KO/TKO, 1 SUB) and Delila (9-1-0, 3 KO/TKO, 1 SUB), who has been billed as the next great Croatian MMA star.

The 6′ 5″, 250-pound Smoldarev, who has a judo and sambo background, was the heavyweight winner of the M-1 Selection Grand Prix. The 24-year-old advanced to the semifinals of the 2013 M-1 Heavyweight Grand Prix but was forced to pull out only two days prior to the fight due to a knee injury. Delila, who stands 6′ 4 ¾” and weighs 230-pounds, is best known for his killer instinct having stopped within the distance all nine of the opponents he has defeated.

M-1 Challenge 45 will air live on Russia 2, the terrestrial channel, throughout Russia and the Commonwealth of Individual States (CIS), as well as across the Middle East on Abu Dhabi Sports Channels.

“This first event of 2014 for M-1 Global kicks off with some great rivalries and important fights to determine who is going to fight for the title,” M1 Global president Vadim Finkelchtein said. “This fight is for the No. 1 Heavyweight contender between two very talented and enormous young prospects. Smoldarev is unbeaten in seven bouts while Delija has only one loss and is considered to be the next big thing in Croatian MMA. Whoever wins is likely to challenge the M-1 Global Heavyweight Champion (champion Damian Grabowski will defend next vs. Marcin Tybura) in the summer.”

M-1 Global is the No. 1 European MMA organization, as well as one of the oldest in the world, dating back to 1998. Superstar Fedor Emelianenko, considered by many to be the greatest fighter in MMA history, has been the face of M-1 Global around the combat sports world for the past decade.

The M-1 Challenge series has traditionally introduced a new wave of potential MMA stars, showcasing elite athletes from Russia and across Europe. Many fighters who fall into the aforementioned category will be showcased on M-1 Challenge 45.

The M-1 Challenge 45 event is stacked from top-to-bottom, featuring five Super Fights to go along with the main event.

M-1 Global lightweight title challenger Nikko Puhakka (28-14-0, 5 KO/TKO, 8 SUB) meets undefeated Russian prospect Maxim Divnich (7-0-0, 4 KO/TKO). Puhakka’s a skilled submission artist with tremendous stamina. He was one of the best Team Finland fighters in the 2009 M-1 Challenge Team Championships. Divnich is a high-regarded kick-boxer who, of course, prefers to fight on his feet.

Tough Spanish welterweight Daniel “The Gladiator” Tabera (17-5-3, 4 KO/TKO, 7 SUB) faces unbeaten Russian sensation Ilya Doderkin (3-0, 3 SUB). Tabera will be making his welterweight debut having previously fought in all weight divisions between middleweight and heavyweight, while Doderkin has achieved status of Master of Sports in Sambo (Russian Federation).

Battle-tested Polish light heavyweight Marcin Zontek (12-8-0, 6 KO/TKO, 5 SUB) will battle 20-year-old Russian striker Rashid Yusupov (2-2-0, 1 KO/TKO, 1 SUB). A past M-1 Global light heavyweight title challenger, Zontek has never been knocked out and he returns to action after a lengthy lay-off due to multiple injuries following his “Best Fight of 2013” effort against Sergey Korneev. Yusupov graduated to professional MMA after winning top honors in Russian and World Amateur MMA tournaments last year, in which he stopped all of his opponents in the latter competition.

Hot Bulgarian prospect Sotir Kichukov (12-1, 2 KOs, 7 SUB) rides a seven-fight win streak into his match-up with veteran Russian featherweight Yunus Evloev (12-6-0, 4 KO/TKO, 6 SUB). The 23-year-old Kichukov is an outstanding grappler and Maxfight Bantamweight Champion back in his country. The winner of multiple international grappling tournaments, Evloev started his MMA career in 2005 as a lightweight.

A pair of 23-year-old Russian lightweights, Rakhman Makhadzhiev (1-0-0, 1 SUB) and Sergey Andreev (5-2-0, 2 SUB), round-out the M-1 Challenge 45 event. Another standout grappler, Makhadzhiev is dropping down from the welterweight division. He was a 2012 Russian National and European Amateur MMA Champion. Andreev is an aggressive fighter with a solid wrestling base. He won a four-man amateur tournament at M-1 Challenge 41.

THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER BRASIL TO BE SCREENED EXCLUSIVELY ON UFC FIGHT PASS™

Las Vegas, Nevada – The Ultimate Fighting Championship® has confirmed that the eagerly awaited The Ultimate Fighter® Brasil: Team Wanderlei vs Team Sonnen season will be available exclusively on the organization’s new digital subscription service UFC® Fight Pass™.

The first episode of TUF Brasil will be available, on demand, on UFC Fight Pass from 7pm PT/10pm ET on Sunday, March 9, just hours after airing on Brazilian television. Each new episode will then be available every Sunday at the same time.

Filming has already begun in Sao Paulo, Brazil and the bad blood between coaches Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva has already resulted in incidents which UFC president Dana White could only describe as “crazy”, “nuts” and “absolute insanity.”

Bad blood has been on the boil between three-time UFC title challenger Sonnen and the legendary “Axe Murderer” for years and now that they are in close proximity to each other day-in, day-out, the pair is struggling to keep their mutual dislike in check.

Sonnen said: “I don’t quite know what to make of it down here. Wanderlei has already been an experience, to say the least. He’s like a cartoon character, he gets angry and runs out of words and steam starts to come out of his ears. He’s a caveman. But I feel sorry for him so I’m helping him get to where he wants to go – retirement.”

Former PRIDE FC world champion Silva said: “Sonnen messed with the wrong guy. Now his time has come. He’s fearful, afraid of me. For everything he said – now he has a payback. I’m here because of Brazil and the Brazilian fans. I’m going to give them what they want – the most exciting season of TUF ever.”

In addition to airing the entire series, UFC Fight Pass will also take subscribers behind the scenes with regular updates from Chael Sonnen, a teaser for which can be seen here.

UFC Chief Content Officer Marshall Zelaznik said the addition of The Ultimate Fighter Brasil makes UFC Fight Pass a must-have for all MMA fans.

He said: “We’re excited to confirm that UFC Fight Pass subscribers won’t miss any of the action from what is certain to be a crazy season of The Ultimate Fighter Brasil. Subscribers will be able to catch each installment on demand, within hours of the show airing on television in Brazil.

“March continues to be a huge month for UFC Fight Pass. On March 1, we have our second exclusive fight card, live from Macau, featuring top welterweight Dong Hyun Kim taking on the returning John Hathaway, a heavyweight battle between Matt Mitrione and Shawn Jordan and former No.1 featherweight Hatsu Hioki in a must-win fight against Ivan Menjivar.

“Then, on March 8, UFC Fight Pass will be the only place to see the stacked UFC London card, headlined by the No.1 ranked Alexander Gustafsson risking his title shot against knockout specialist Jimi Manuwa. The event will also feature a great flyweight fight between Ian McCall and Brad Pickett, Melvin Guillard taking on fellow TUF alumnus Michael Johnson and a battle between unbeaten welterweights with Gunnar Nelson taking on Omari Akhmedov.

“All that, plus the UFC Fight Pass Prelims, unrivaled access to the world’s biggest MMA fight library and now TUF Brasil – March is a huge month for UFC Fight Pass.”

UFC Fight Pass has already launched in the United States, Canada, New Zealand and Australia, with a $9.99 price point per month in all four markets. The service will be rolled out in other markets shortly, with content varying according to local television blackout rules.

Goodridge, Moy pull off upsets at Twin River

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Jan. 24th, 2014) – Not even Shedrick Goodridge beating Todd Chattelle could upstage the upset of the night Friday at Twin River Casino.

On a night where Goodridge dominated Chattelle over the course of three rounds and featherweight Rob Font kicked off the year with another impressive win, underdog Kin Moy stole the show with a unanimous decision win over fan-favorite Andre Soukhamthath on the undercard of “CES MMA XXI.”

Facing his toughest test to date, Moy (5-0) ended Soukhamthath’s seven-fight win streak and kept his own perfect record intact by winning the final two rounds of his three-round bantamweight battle with Soukhamthath to earn a 29-28 score on all three cards. Soukhamthath (8-2) looked sharp early, dropping Moy twice with a pair of rear leg kicks and dominating the opening round, but once Moy took the fight to the ground, the momentum shifted.

Moy nearly choked out Soukhamthath in the second and although Soukhamthath fought his way back and controlled most of the round, Moy dominated the final minute. With the fight even at a round apiece, Moy took control early in the third, keeping Soukhamthath on his back and not allowing him to get to his feet. Unable to work his stand-up, Soukhamthath dropped the last two rounds and suffered his first loss in eight fights.

Starring in his 10th bout under CES’ promotional guidance, Chattelle (12-10) broke his right hand early during his main event bout with Goodridge (5-6) and never recovered. The New Jersey native dominated the stand-up and earned several key takedowns to take control of the fight midway through the opening round, winning unanimously, 30-27, on all three scorecards.

Font (9-1) made quick work of his opponent, New York’s Ahsan Abdullah (5-5), dropping him early in the opening round with a flying knee and unloading with a barrage of right hooks that Abdullah somehow survived, but the fight didn’t last much longer as Font – a bit weary from the punches – a locked in a d’arce choke moments later and finished Abdullah for good at the 3:48 mark. Font, the reigning CES MMA featherweight champion, has won eight consecutive bouts.

Desperately looking to end a two-fight losing streak and get his first win since 2012, bantamweight Dinis Paiva Jr. (4-5, 2 KOs) of East Providence, R.I., came out firing on all cylinders, stopping Franklin Isabel (4-7) of Chelsea, Mass., with a series of unanswered strikes at 1 minute, 48 seconds of the opening round.

In an exciting bantamweight bout, Shaun Marmas (5-6) of Coventry, R.I., and unbeaten Salem, Mass., native Matt Doherty fought tooth and nail until Doherty finally finished the bout via rear-naked choke at the 2:12 mark of the final round.

This was a strong, technical ground-and-pound match with both fighters jockeying for position through the first two rounds, though Doherty maintained the edge by reversing most of Marmas’ takedowns and keeping the momentum on his side. Doherty opened the third by dropping Marmas to the canvas with a knee and ultimately taking his back to sink in the rear-naked choke.

Keeping his impressive streak of knockout wins alive, heavyweight John Johnston (5-0, 5 KOs) of Melrose, Mass., flattened South Carolina’s William Baptiste in the opening round with a head kick so vicious it even sent Johnston to the canvas, too.

Johnston appeared on the verge of ending the bout in the opening seconds when he dropped Baptiste (2-1) in the center of the canvas and began pounding him with hammer fists, but Baptiste eventually fought his way back to his feet. Moments later at the 1:49 mark, Johnston caught him with a head kick that prompted the referee to immediately stop the bout. Johnston has now won all five of his fights by knockout.

Exciting newcomer Kyle Bochniak (1-0) of Winthrop, Mass., wasted no time getting the win in his professional debut, choking out the overmatched Peter Bertucci (0-1) of Hyannis, Mass., via rear-naked choke 1:05 into the opening round of their featherweight bout. Bochniak immediately took Bertucci to the canvas, took his back, and applied for the quick submission.

Fighting as a last-minute replacement for the injured Sylvester Murataj, Johnston, R.I., middleweight Tunde Odumoso (2-2) evened his record with a dominant win over the scrappy Adam Quitt (1-4) of Framingham, Mass., 30-27, on all three scorecards.

Odumoso was the faster, more effective striker, peppering Quitt and bloodying his opponent’s face midway through the second round. Quitt tried to press Odumoso against the cage and drag him to the canvas to utilize his wrestling, but Odumoso’s takedown defense was on point, allowing to fight in stand-up mode for all three rounds. By the third round, Odumoso began boxing circles around Quitt, mixing in a few knees to the midsection and rear-leg kicks to keep Quitt at bay.

Making his Twin River debut, Boston lightweight Bekzod Abdurakmonov (5-0) kept his perfect record intact with a dominant win over Philadelphia’s Andrew Osborne (7-8). Abdurakmonov scored a quick takedown and eventually took Osborne’s back to earn the rear-naked choke submission at the 1:54 mark.

Brokenshire Set to Defend Featherweight Title against Talon Hofman

Tacoma, WA (January 23rd, 2014) – The Northwest’s premier mixed martial arts promotion, CageSport MMA, is once again returning to the Emerald Queen Casino on Saturday, February 8th, showcasing an all pro ten bout card including a stellar main event with Drew “The Eternal Fire” Brokenshire putting his featherweight title on the line against Oregon’s Talon Hofman. Also being featured on the action packed card is five time world Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu champion, Miriam Cardoso, who will make her professional MMA debut.

Tickets for CageSport XXIX, scheduled for Saturday, February 8th, at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, WA are available and can be purchased at the EQC box office and online through Ticketmaster. Prices start at $35.

After defeating Julian Erosa for the CageSport featherweight title in 2012, Brokenshire (8-1) had an even bigger 2013, successfully defending his title against two of the region’s top featherweights, Enoch Wilson and Shorty Weikel. Following his victory over Weikel at CageSport XXV, Brokenshire was then set to defend his title against Lee Morrison (11-3) in what could have been the most highly anticipated fight of the year for Northwest MMA fans. However, shortly after the fight was announced, Morrison signed with M-1 Global, a popular MMA promotion based in Amsterdam, effectively ending the possibility of a Brokenshire vs. Morrison title fight.

Brokenshire’s next opponent, Talon Hofman (9-6), stands to be a tough challenge for Drew as Hofman is one of the best wrestlers in the Northwest. Graduating from Burns High School in Oregon, Hofman is a four time high school wrestling state champion, the 2003 Sierra Nevada Classic 152 pound champion, and a 2004 All American High School wrestler. Much like all of Brokenshire’s fights, the main event of CageSport XXIX figures to be a high energy bout with two fighters who will have a lot at stake when they step into the cage in front of an anticipated sold out 1900 seat EQC showroom.

Fans in attendance will also be treated to two women’s MMA bouts which will be a first for CageSport MMA. Five time world Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu champion, Miriam Cardoso, will take on Oregon’s Katie Howard in what will be the professional debut for both fighters. Also on the card is Seattle’s Reagan Benedetti who will also make her professional debut against British Columbia’s Cheryl Chan (0-1). With the recent surge of women’s MMA, it’s become more feasible to consistently put on women fights and with the growing talent of NW female MMA fighters, fans can count on CageSport to continue supporting women’s MMA.

Notable fighter on the undercard is Yakima MMA’s and former CageSport featherweight champion, Julian Erosa (10-2), who is looking to gain momentum once again after a disappointing defeat to Lee Morrison at CageSport XXV. Erosa is highly thought of around the Northwest MMA community and will have a few things to prove when he steps into the cage against Mike Joy (9-6) at CageSport XXIX.

Doors for CageSport XXIX open at 6 PM with the first fight scheduled for 7 PM. For more information about CageSport XXIX and all other Halquist Production events please visit www.halquistproductions.com and the official Facebook and Twitter of CageSport MMA and Battle at the Boat boxing.

About CageSport MMA
Halquist productions’ CageSport MMA continues to be the longest running and leading all professional MMA promotion in the Northwest. The promotion has drawn fighters from all over the region such as: Miesha Tate, Bryan Caraway, Sam Sicilia, and Michael Chiesa, who have all fought on former CageSport cards and have become UFC superstars. Font: “I’ll be even better in 2014!”

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Jan. 22nd, 2014) — Rob Font had about as good a year in 2013 as any fighter could hope for.

Imagine him being even better this year. It’s almost improbable, but not at all impossible for a fighter who defied the odds in a breakthrough 2013.

“I’m coming into this year taking names and collecting bodies,” said Font (8-1, 2 KOs), who’ll make his season debut Friday night at Twin River Casino in Lincoln, R.I.

“I’m here to win and fight, and I want to fight even bigger and better names this year.”

The reigning CES MMA featherweight champion will put his seven-fight win streak on the line against Bombsquad veteran Ahsan Abdullah (5-4, 2 KOs) at “CES MMA XXI.”

A Tampa, Fla., native, Font moved to Boston four years and didn’t even begin his amateur career until 2011. Less than three years later, he’s the premiere featherweight in the northeast, still the underdog in many ways despite his impressive resume as a pro.

Fighting with a chip on his shoulder is perhaps what makes Font such a dangerous adversary in the cage, not to mention the realization that this ride could end at any minute courtesy of a swift right hand or a tricky armbar.

“MMA, in general, is a humbling sport,” Font said. “You’re constantly getting beat up every day. You realize real fast you’re not the man. I have a black eye right now, and that actually came from an amateur coming up. We’re always, always in there sparring with tough guys.

“With those 4-ounce gloves, anything can happen at anytime, so I never take anything for granted. I always try to be as prepared as possible, but anything can happen. I’ve seen guys win fights when they’re losing all three rounds and at the last minute and a half they come up with the big knockout off baby clips and punches. It just happens. It’s definitely something to keep in the back of your mind when you’re out there.

“Knowing anything can happen is what keeps you alive. Your senses are up. I call it my spider senses. That tingling. I’m always aware. I know at any point a jab can put you on the ground.”

Font’s breakthrough performance in 2013 began in February when he dominated Saul Almeida, at the time considered one of the top featherweights in the northeast. It was Font’s coming-out party, so to speak, and he continued his rise to the top with wins over Lucas Cruz and Chris Foster, the latter for the then-vacant CES MMA featherweight title, a lopsided fight that ended by technical knockout four minutes into the opening round.

Font closed the year with another impressive win, beating Matt DiMarcantonio by unanimous decision in December, and is now focused on somehow topping his 2013 output with the ultimate encore performance in 2014.

As always, the first step won’t be easy, not against the veteran Abdullah, who’s fought in Rhode Island before, beating Shaun Marmas in June.

“The guy’s driving from New York, and you know he’s not trying to take that long ride home with an ‘L’ so he’s going to bring the fight,” Font said. “I think he has a perfect style for me. He’s going to be a perfect style, actually, for the fans. He’s coming forward, and I’m a better counter-puncher than coming forward, so, pretty much, I’m going to catch him coming in.”

“CES MMA XXI,” scheduled for Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, also features the return of fan-favorites Andre Soukhamthath (7-1, 4 KOs) of Woonsocket, R.I., and Pawtucket, R.I., middleweight Todd Chattelle (12-9, 9 KOs).

Chattelle is hoping for a fresh start in 2014 against the always dangerous Shedrick Goodridge (4-6, 2 KOs) of Rahway, N.J. Soukhamthath will face his toughest test to date in a possible early candidate for Fight of the Year against undefeated Cambridge, Mass., bantamweight Kin Moy (4-0, 1 KO). Soukhamthath is making his first trip back to the Ocean State since relocating to Boca Raton, Fla., where he now trains with the famed Blackzilians. Since making his CES MMA debut in 2012, Soukhamthath has won seven consecutive fights, including a knockout win over Corey Simmons in CES’ 2013 season finale in December in which he broke a tie with Chattelle to become the promotion’s winningest fighter.

Also returning to Twin River is Melrose, Mass., heavyweight John Johnston (4-0, 4 KOs), who will attempt to keep his impressive streak of consecutive knockout wins (4) alive when he faces unbeaten William Baptiste (2-0, 1 KO) of Goldsboro, N.C.

Dinis Paiva Jr. (3-5), an East Providence, R.I., native, will look to snap his two-fight losing streak in a bantamweight bout against Franklin Isabel (4-6) of Chelsea, Mass.; while Marmas (5-5, 1 KO) will face Matt Doherty (2-0, 2 KOs), a Salem, Mass., native, in a potential Fight of the Night candidate. Marmas split two bouts in 2013, beating Tom Evans in April before losing to Abdullah in June.

Featherweight Kyle Bochniak of Winthrop, Mass., will make his professional debut in a separate three-round bout. Middleweight Adam Quitt (1-3) of Framingham, Mass., will return for his first fight since February when he battles Rocky Hill, Conn., veteran Sylvester Murataj (0-2). All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Twenty-one fights later, Chattelle still going strong

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Jan. 21st, 2014) — Twenty-one fights in just under seven years. Think about that for a second.

In a sport where an athlete’s shelf life is about as long as that of your average NFL running back, a sport where a two- or three-year layoff is the norm, not the exception, Todd Chattelle (12-9, 9 KOs) has survived every bruise, break and contusion in a remarkable career defined as much by his longevity as his success.

Friday night, he’ll step back inside the cage for the first time in 2014 and the 22nd time in his career when he faces middleweight Shedrick Goodridge (4-6, 2 KOs) in the main event of “CES MMA XXI” at Twin River Casino in Lincoln, R.I.

“I have more fights than CES has shows!” Chattelle said with a laugh.

Truth is, the two might not be as successful as they are right now without one another; this will be Chattelle’s 10th fight under CES’ promotional guidance, a stretch that includes a 4-0 finish in 2011 that helped revived Chattelle’s career during a time in which he was questioning whether or not he wanted to continue fighting.

Why so much Chattelle through the years? He’s as popular as he is prolific; win or lose, Chattelle’s bouts bring a special energy to the arena, drawing sold-out crowds that leave the fans anticipating his next fight. Few compete with the same passion and explosiveness on such a consistent basis. It’s a special symbiotic relationship between fighter and promoter that has kept Chattelle successful, active and, more importantly, relevant as he approaches his 35th birthday.

“I feel like it’s gone by so quickly,” Chattelle said. “When [CES matchmaker] Pat [Sullivan] said that to me the other day, I was like, ‘Really?!’ I’ve been on, like, half your shows. That’s pretty cool.

“If you think about it, I have 22 fights, but I’ve trained and prepared for about 30 camps, all the fights that backed out and didn’t happen. I did the rough math, and with sparring and everything, I’ve had 22 fights, but I’ve really had about 2,000 fights in my life.

“It definitely gets harder as the years go by. Sometimes it’s not even physically; it’s mentally.”

With everything Chattelle has been through growing up in Pawtucket, R.I., with four brothers, the run-ins with the wrong crowd, the adversity, it’s hard to imagine anything happening inside the cage that could slow him down.

So, when asked how much longer he can keep fighting, Chattelle just laughs.

“At the end of the day, I’ve been through some things that most people haven’t been through,” he said. “I’ve been through things war veterans have been through. I’ve been shot, I’ve been stabbed, I’ve been hit in the face with tires, I have metal plates in my face, I have a bullet in my leg, and all these things, if I let them weigh on me I’m not going to be able to continue to do it, so I put all that in the back of my mind and keep going.

“The fight itself, what’s going to happen? A bruise? A cut? It’s not really going to matter. It’s not life-threatening. I just don’t think there’s anyone out there that can threaten my life physically.Through all things, injuries, feeling good, feeling bad, I can still get up through Christ and still keep going.”

Chattelle’s renewed faith in God is his driving force. It’s what gets him out of bed each morning to continue fighting both in and outside of the cage. It’s what gets him through those tough, two-a-day training sessions leading up to a big fight.

“I’ve had a life resolution to get closer to my family and put them first more and get closer to God and put God first, first before anything, which in turn will put my family first and everything else I should be doing first.

“To have faith is everything. At any second, if I didn’t have faith I’d be like, ‘Whatever. I’m done.'”

With CES in his corner, and vice-versa, it doesn’t appear either are going anywhere anytime soon.

“I think the key is to stay focused on the main reason I stared in the first place, which was to be successful for my family, friend and children, mostly my children so they’d know if you work hard you can succeed and make it through some times and keep going,” Chattelle said.

“It’s not always easy. You get beat down, but you rest up and get ready, let your muscles, let your body heal and just mentally focus on the task at hand. You go to work.”

“CES MMA XXI,” scheduled for Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, also features the return of fan-favorites Andre Soukhamthath (7-1, 4 KOs) of Woonsocket, R.I., and CES MMA featherweight champion Rob Font (8-1, 2 KOs) of Boston.

Font will face Ahsan Abdullah (5-4, 2 KOs) of Binghamton, N.Y., in a three-round bout as he aims for his eight consecutive win and fifth overall under the promotional guidance of CES.

(3-5), an East Providence, R.I., native, will look to snap his two-fight losing streak in a bantamweight bout against Franklin Isabel (4-6) of Chelsea, Mass.; while fellow bantamweight Shaun Marmas (5-5, 1 KO) faces Matt Doherty (2-0, 2 KOs), a Salem, Mass., native, in a potential Fight of the Night candidate. Marmas split two bouts in 2013, beating Tom Evans in April and losing to Abdullah in June.

Exciting prospect Willie Brown Jr. (2-0) of Meriden, Conn., will look to keep his perfect record intact in his first bout of the year against lightweight Kevin Haley (2-0, 1 KO) of Dover, N.H., and featherweight Kyle Bochniak of Winthrop, Mass., will make his professional debut in a separate three-round bout. Middleweight Adam Quitt (1-3) of Framingham, Mass., will return for his first fight since February when he battles Rocky Hill, Conn., veteran Sylvester Murataj (0-2). All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Tickets for “CES MMA XXI” are priced at $40, $55, $100 and $125 (VIP) and can be purchased by calling 401-724-2253/2254, online at www.cesmma.com or www.ticketmaster.com or at the Twin River Players Club.

Quotes and notes from CES MMA XXI

On moving down to 135 pounds for his upcoming fight against Matt Doherty:

“It was just at 145 I don’t really cut much and guys are cutting more and more. It’s more of a business decision, making the smarter move, and bumping up my training, bringing basically a whole new camp for this fight and pushing it. I think I’ll definitely be stronger. At 145, expect for like, my very last fight, I didn’t feel like the guys were stronger than me. I felt like I could stand with them. I’ve got the reach advantage and I feel I’ll be stronger than most guys at 135. I feel this is the best move for me. I’m ready to make an impact and make my name at 135.”

CES MMA featherweight champ Rob Font, 8-1-1 (2 KOs)

On his outlook for 2014 as he prepares to face New Jersey’s Ahsan Abdullah:

“I’m definitely trying to forget about 2013 and come into 2014 taking names and collecting bodies, pretty much. I’m here to win and fight. I definitely want to fight bigger and better fighters in 2014. This next fight, he’s definitely a tough fighter. He has a real aggressive style. Comes forward, comes from a great camp. The guy’s driving from New York, so you know he’s trying to take that long ride home with an ‘L’ so he’s going to bring the fight. I think he has a perfect style for me. He’s coming forward, and I’m a better counter-puncher than coming forward, so, pretty much, I’m going to catch him coming in.”

Dinis Paiva Jr., 3-5 (1 KO)

On trying to rebound from a tough finish in 2013:

“I’m coming off two losses and I want to come out with a real strong win this year. I think it’s going to be a good year. I’m training out of CCFA now. Got a great group of guys I’m working with up there. The camaraderie’s tight, the brotherhood’s tight, and I’m definitely feel I’m on my ‘A’ game and the best I’ve ever been. There are always different variables in this sport. Going into the cage, you can lose at any moment, so it’s hard to tell. I feel good, I feel confident, I feel headstrong, and I’ve got a good camp backing me up. It’s definitely a good thing.”

Andre Soukhamthath, 7-1 (4 KOs)

On his upcoming bout with Kin Moy and his new training camp in Florida:

“I’m on the card with a lot of my friends and I probably, have, on paper, the toughest test so far, going against an undefeated fighter. Real explosive, real fast. He’s definitely no slouch. You’re going to win some and lose some, so I just want to go in there and perform. That’s what I’m focused on, because if you put too much pressure on yourself you can’t perform to your abilities. I just go in there and do my thing. That’s what I train for. I definitely feel like I’m a lot stronger. I’m going with a lot of tough guys, a lot of high-level guys. In order to beat me, you’re going to have to take my soul away. ”

Todd Chattelle, 12-9 (9 KOs)

On his faith in God and the role it plays in his career:

“if I didn’t have faith I’d be like, ‘Whatever. I’m done. There’s no point in this,’ but 20, 30 years from now, no matter how well I do, I’ll be 60, 70 years old, even 40 and 50 years from now, if we’re still around, God willing, we’re talking to some kid at the bar or the club and we’re like, ‘I used to be tough! I used to be No. 1 in New England!’ which I was, and then they’re going to be like, ‘Yeah, right. Whatever, old man,’ so all this isn’t going to matter. What’s going to matter is the memories I put together and being a good man for my family and whoever else, any brother or sister out there who wants to come to me and ask my advice. I can give them God, hopefully.”

NOTES: “CES MMA XX” is CES MMA’s 21st show since its inception in 2010. … Todd Chattelle will be featured on a CES MMA card for the 10th time in his career, the most among any fighter in promotion history … Andre Soukhamthath is CES MMA’s winningest fighter with seven victories under the promotion’s guidance … Both Soukhamthath and Rob Font have won seven consecutive bouts. … Heavyweight John Johnston, who will be featured on the undercard, has won each of his four bouts by knockout. … Shaun Marmas has alternated wins and losses in each of his last four fights. … Ahsan Abdullah, who is facing Font on Jan. 24th, will be making his third appearance for CES. Rocktagon 30 Full Fight Card Announced

Las Vegas – January 15, 2014 El Paso, Texas will be Rocktagon MMA’s first destination of the new year when the promotion returns to the Buchanan Event Center on January 17 with the all-pro “Journey of Champions 30.”

First impressions are everything, and Rocktagon left no stone unturned in its effort to put together an absolutely stellar fight card from top to bottom.

The headliner features a highly-anticipated showdown between submission aces Billy Colon and Daniel Miller.

Despite being the younger fighter, Colon will enjoy an edge in experience with his professional tenure closing in on six years. He was featured in the main event of Rocktagon 28 last year in El Paso, where he suffered a controversial TKO loss to Martin Sano Jr.

A win over another tough veteran like Miller would go a long way in helping Colon erase that deficit and move one step closer to a coveted title shot.

Miller, on the other hand, is looking to steal some of Colon’s thunder and add a notable name to his résumé.

The card also features a bout between hard-nosed strikers Desmond Hill and Oliver Parker. MMA’s old adage, “don’t blink,” is especially relevant in this particular style matchup. The combined power of Hill and Parker is enough to light up all of El Paso.

Patrick Dixon will also be in action that night. After his brilliant first round submission win over Anthony Stevens at Rocktagon 28, he’ll be looking to keep the momentum rolling against an always dangerous Carl Perry.

The full fight card, which is subject to change, is listed below:

Billy Colon vs. Daniel Miller
Desmond Hill vs. Oliver Parker
Patrick “Skar” Dixon vs. Carl Perry
Amanda Lovato vs. Jessica Armstrong
Julio Hinojosa vs. Anthony Stevens
Jesus Urbina vs. Jonathan Lopez
Omar Acosta vs. Joseph E. Gonzalez-Provencio
Turrell Galloway vs. Paco Castillo
Timothy Sosa vs. Alan Lerma

Rocktagon MMA “Journey of Champions 30” will be live on Friday, January 17 at the Buchanan Event Center, located at 11540 Pellicano Drive in El Paso, Texas. Doors open at 6pm with the first fight scheduled to kick off at 7pm. Tickets start at $30 and are available online at www.RocktagonWorldwide.com, by phone at 440-934-4MMA, or through the athletes listed above. The event may also be purchased as a live pay-per-view at RSM.TV.

Founded in mid-2010, Rocktagon MMA is the mixed martial arts division of Rocktagon Worldwide, a sports and music entertainment company. They are joined by top free agents Kultar Gill and Kentoro Watanabe, who have also joined the promotion.

Marat Gafurov is undefeated after eight fights, having emerged as the top Featherweight from Europe in recent years. He possesses deadly ground and pound that has led him to six finishes so far. Prior to signing with ONE FC, he was the reigning M-1 Global Featherweight Champion. He joins an exciting Featherweight division that is currently ruled by Koji Oishi and there is no doubt that Gafurov will be looking to earn himself a title opportunity in the near future.

Kelvin ‘The Big Hit’ Fitial is the top mixed martial artist to hail from the Northern Mariana Islands of Saipan and have proven himself by winning the Heavyweight Championship from a regional organization. He has not lost since 2009 and has earned nine of his 12 victories via knockout or TKO. Fitial’s bouts are guaranteed crowd pleasers as he never stops moving forward and loves getting into boxing duels with his opponent. ONE FC’s Heavyweight division has rapidly become one of the most exciting divisions with Chris Lokteff, Paul Cheng, Alain Ngalani and now Kevin Fitial in the mix.

Rob Lisita is the best Featherweight to emerge from Australia. He has fought in numerous smaller organizations and after an impressive 6-1 run, will now face a step up in competition as he joins Asia’s largest mixed martial arts organization. He is aptly nicknamed ‘Ruthless’ for his fighting style as he always goes for the finish whenever he sees weakness in his opponent.

The winner of ONE FC Network Partner BRACE’s Featherweight championship contest between Martin Nguyen and Luke Standing was promised a ONE FC contract, and Nguyen earned the contract by stopping Standing in the first round of their main event contest in December. Currently undefeated in his career, Australia’s Nguyen will look to do BRACE proud as he tests himself against the best in Asia.

Kultar ‘Black Mamba’ Gill is a Canadian-Indian Welterweight veteran who has been competing since 2001. His list of opponents includes Caol Uno, Rodrigo Damm and recent ONE FC signing Harris Sarmiento. He has also faced the legendary Buakaw Banchamek in kickboxing. Gill has ferocious kicks and is relentless when he has an opportunity to finish his opponent. India has yet to notch a victory in the ONE FC cage and Gill is looking forward to change that when he enters the ONE FC cage.

Kentaro Watanabe is a Japanese Flyweight who will now ply his trade in ONE FC’s Flyweight division. Watanabe has come through the ranks of the Shooto organization with his signature lightning quick striking style that has made him a favorite amongst Japanese mixed martial arts fans. He now looks to showcase his exciting style of fighting to the millions of ONE FC fans watching across the world.

ONE FC’s next event, titled ONE FC: WAR OF NATIONS, will be held on 14 March at Stadium Negara in Malaysia. It will be headlined by a Welterweight World Championship contest between American wrestler Brock Larson and Nobutatsu Suzuki of Japan.

After a five-year reign that saw Georges St-Pierre atop the welterweight division, the champion relinquished the belt, electing to take personal time away from competition. Now the top fighters in the division square off and a new champion will be crowned at the American Airlines Center on Saturday, March 15.

Currently on a three-fight win streak that includes a unanimous decision win over St-Pierre training partner Rory MacDonald (No. 3), Robbie Lawler (22-9, 1 NC, fighting out of Coconut Creek, Fla.) looks to cap off his remarkable UFC comeback with a victory over Hendricks. Vowing to return for the title, Dallas’ own (No. 1) Johny Hendricks (15-2, fighting out of Dallas), holds key victories over Jon Fitch (Knockout of the Night), Josh Koscheck, Martin Kampmann (Knockout of the Night) and Carlos Condit (Fight of the Night). Now he plans to take the belt that many believe he already earned on his home turf with friends and family in attendance.

In addition, former interim welterweight champion (No. 2) Carlos Condit (29-7, fighting out of Albuquerque, N.M.) battles explosive wrestler (No.11) Tyron Woodley (12-2, fighting out of St. Louis, Mo.). Fresh off a TKO win over Martin Kampmann, for which he earned his third consecutive Fight of the Night honor, Condit looks to stall the momentum of a two-time Div. I All-American wrestler in Woodley. After securing wins over Tarec Saffiedine, Jay Hieron, and Josh Koscheck (Knockout of the Night) Woodley knows that a win over Condit will secure him a place atop the welterweight rankings and put him one step closer to a shot at the title.

Also, The Ultimate Fighter® season 1 winner (No. 15) Diego Sanchez (26-6, fighting out of Albuquerque, N.M.) meets unbeaten lightweight Myles Jury (13-0, fighting out of San Diego, Calif.). After narrowly losing a 2013 “Fight of the Year” effort to former Strikeforce champion, Gilbert Melendez, Sanchez seeks a return to winning form. Jury knows a marquee victory over fan favorite Sanchez, is his ticket to the lightweight division’s top 15.

Other bouts for UFC 171 include:
Seventh-ranked welterweight Jake Shields (29-6-1, 1 NC) vs. heavy-handed 13th-ranked contender Hector Lombard (33-4-1, 1 NC).
Explosive light heavyweight Thiago Silva (16-3-0, 2 NC) vs. heavy-handed Ovince St. Preux (14-5).
The Ultimate Fighter 17 winner Kelvin Gastelum (8-0) vs. 15th-ranked welterweight contender Rick Story (16-7).
The Ultimate Fighter 18 winner Julianna Pena (6-2) vs. ninth-ranked bantamweight contender Jessica Andrade (10-3).
13th-ranked featherweight Dennis Bermudez (13-3) vs. submission specialist Jimmy Hettes (11-1).
Dallas’ own Sean Spencer (11-2) vs. Montreal’s Alex Garcia (11-1) in a welterweight duel.
Also fighting out of Dallas, flyweight Will Campuzano (13-5) vs. Darrell Montague (13-3).
A middleweight bout between The Ultimate Fighter 17 alumni Bubba McDaniel (21-7) and Sweden’s Tor Troeng (16-5-1).

Soukhamthath, Moy lock horns jan. 24 at CES MMA XXI in long-awaited bantamweight bout

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Jan. 13th, 2014) — Andre Soukhamthath might be the first out-of-towner in CES history with a bigger cheering section than everyone else on the show.

Then again, Soukhamthath (7-1, 4 KOs), “The Asian Sensation” originally born in raised in Woonsocket, R.I., isn’t your average out-of-towner. The 5-foot-9 bantamweight will return home Friday, Jan. 24, 2014 for the first time since he and his family relocated to Boca Raton, Fla., in December to train exclusively with the famed Blackzilians. This “homecoming” of sorts might be Soukhamthath’s toughest fight to date as he faces undefeated Cambridge, Mass., prospect Kin “Kong” Moy (5-0, 1 KO) on the undercard of “CES MMA XXI” at Twin River Casino in Lincoln, R.I.

“I’ve seen him through the years,” Soukhamthath said. “I don’t think he’s a better athlete than me, and that is where my advantage will be.”

The showdown against Moy will test Soukhamthath’s mettle both in and outside the cage; not only is he preparing for the fight itself, he’s also trying to balance his preparation with family life as he returns to Rhode Island today to finish training camp, no doubt having to fulfill obligations from friends and family who will want to spend time with him before he returns to Florida in two weeks.

“I’m here to fight, though,” Soukhamthath said, “and I think my fans will understand that.

“They know I can’t go out and party and mess around. They’re just waiting to see my fight. Then we’ll party afterward.”

It’s a lot to juggle for a 25-year-old fighter with both a family and career to consider, but it’s a risk worth taking given the level of training at the Blackzilians’ facility in Boca Raton. The Florida-based team is known for working with former Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) world champions Vitor Belfort and Rashad Evans, along with pro boxer Guillermo Rigondeaux.

“Just by working with guys who are on another level, I feel like I’m improving everyday,” Soukhamthath said. “It took a couple of weeks to get settled, but now everyone’s real comfortable. Seeing that sunlight every morning is real motivating.

“The mindset is different down here,” he continued. “That’s mainly I made the move. Here, their job is to fight. They’re in the gym seven days a week. If I have a fight coming up, I know I will have training partners to work with rather than having to look for work. When it’s a wrestling day, everyone is there for wrestling. When it’s a sparring day, everyone’s there for sparring. And there are no egos. Everyone is there to work.”

Will the new regimen be enough to stop Moy? Within the past year, Moy has won three pro bouts, including a big win over fan-favorite Dinis Paiva at CES MMA’s “Path Of Destruction” show in April. He also submitted Kurt Chase-Patrick in just under a minute in September and closed out 2013 with a bare-knuckle boxing win over Texas pro boxer Marc Antonio Torres in New Hampshire, winning the five-round fight by unanimous decision. Torres had only three pro bouts under his belt, but more than 100 amateur fights.

“That fight gave me a lot of confidence,” Moy said. “Fighting a guy who was a real dangerous striker who had so much amateur experience and being able to stand in front of him gives me a boost knowing what Andre will bring to the table.

“He has great standup,” Moy said of Soukhamthath, “but his wrestling is really underrated.”

To prepare for what will also be his toughest test, Moy is working with several different training partners at Redline MMA, anyone who can duplicate Souhamthath’s skill set, style and cadence.

“I have a really good camp behind me,” Moy said. “Pedro Gonzalez, Soap Am, Matt Doherty, they’ve all helped me push myself to the next level, Pedro especially, with him being taller and having a similar body type to Andre. I’ve been trying my best to replicate that, so I have to take pieces from different training partners.”

At first, Moy was hesitant to take the fight given his respect for Soukhamthath and the fact both are Asian-American fighters working together to establish more diversity within the MMA community, both locally and worldwide.

“Surprisingly, there aren’t a lot of Asian-American representatives,” Moy said, “and I admire how well Andre fights and how he carries that with pride, but, at the end of the day, I think he’s the best 135-pounder around, and I want to fight the best.”

“Anytime you win, you’re taking another step forward,” Soukhamthath added. “This is another big fight. I’ve know [Moy] for a while and I consider him a friend, but now we’re fighting, and I take that personal, so we’re not friends. When you fight me, you’re messing with my money. I’m going to bring it, and I hope he brings it, too.”

“CES MMA XXI” also features the return of fan-favorites Todd “The Hulk” Chattelle (12-9, 9 KOs) of Pawtucket, R.I., and CES MMA featherweight champion Rob Font (8-1, 2 KOs) of Boston. Font will face Ahsan Abdullah (5-4, 2 KOs) of Binghamton, N.Y., in a three-round bout as he aims for his eight consecutive win and fifth overall under the promotional guidance of CES. Chattelle is hoping for a fresh start in 2014 against the always dangerous Shedrick Goodridge (4-6, 2 KOs) of Rahway, N.J.

Paiva (3-5), an East Providence, R.I., native, will look to snap his two-fight losing streak in a bantamweight bout against Franklin Isabel (4-6) of Chelsea, Mass.; while fellow bantamweight Shaun Marmas (5-5, 1 KO) Doherty (2-0, 2 KOs), a Salem, Mass., native, in a potential Fight of the Night candidate. Marmas split two bouts in 2013, beating Tom Evans in April and losing to Abdullah in June.

Exciting prospect Willie Brown Jr. (2-0) of Meriden, Conn., will look to keep his perfect record intact in his first bout of the year against lightweight Kevin Haley (2-0, 1 KO) of Dover, N.H., and featherweight Kyle Bochniak of Winthrop, Mass., will make his professional debut in a separate three-round bout against Anthony Loycano (1-3) of North Andover, Mass.

Nobutatsu Suzuki is a fighter who has proven that he has knockout power. He has a record of nine knockouts out of ten wins, which gives him one of the highest percentages of stoppage wins via knockout in all of MMA. Suzuki is famous for being the first fighter in Asia to showcase the incredible striking power of Karate in an MMA context. The Kyokushin Karate black belt last fought at ONE FC: RISE TO POWER, defeating one of MMA’s most experienced combatants, Phil Baroni, by TKO. Suzuki will be looking to use that power to earn a ‘Knockout of the Night’ bonus and leave with the coveted ONE FC World Championship title belt.

Brock Larson is a highly experienced fighter who has more than 40 fights in several top organizations across the world. He made a successful ONE FC debut last year when he defeated feared Dutch kickboxer, Melvin Manhoef, via unanimous decision. He now gets an opportunity to cement his legacy when he faces another elite striker in Nobutatsu Suzuki. His 26 submission victories are testament to Larson’s grappling prowess, which he will likely utilize to propel him to victory and emerge as the first ever ONE FC Welterweight World Champion.

Kevin Belingon is the Philippines’ top Bantamweight and has already proven he can compete against the best in the world in his battles against Soo Chul Kim, Masakatsu Ueda, Yusup Saadulaev and David Aranda. He showcased his striking prowess by knocking out his opponent in devastating fashion in his last fight, and will look to do the same to his Korean opponent Dae Hwan Kim.

Dae Hwan Kim is undefeated in nine professional mixed martial arts bouts so far. He made a successful debut in Asia’s largest mixed martial arts organization last December, defeating Australian grappler Thanh Vu via submission. Kim is never afraid to brawl and consistently puts on Fight of the Night performances. Belingon will be his toughest test to date and Kim will move one step closer to a title opportunity as well as maintain his undefeated record if he can overcome the Filipino.

The rematch between Sherilyn Lim and Ann Osman is one of the most heavily anticipated bouts of 2014. Lim won the first bout via split decision after three back-and-forth rounds which had the 12,000 fans in attendance at the Singapore Indoor Stadium jumping off their seats. Lim will once again be representing Singapore’s oldest mixed martial arts gym, Fight G. She has been part of Fight G since 2007, when she joined their Muay Thai program, and has been training under the tutelage of Singaporean MMA pioneer Darren De Silva. Sherilyn has quickly established herself as the best female mixed martial artist in Singapore and will showcase her talents again in March.

Ann Osman is Malaysia’s first female mixed martial artist and has captivated the nation with her infectious personality and indomitable fighting spirit. She trains out of Borneo Tribal Squad in the mountainous region of Kota Kinabalu in East Malaysia. Osman will enjoy the support of her countrymen this time after coming up short despite a valiant effort in Singapore. Her impressive takedowns and vicious ground-and-pound may prove to be the decisive factor in this Women’s Straweight bout.

WORLD SERIES OF FIGHTING 8 CONFERENCE CALL HIGHLIGHTS

LAS VEGAS (Jan. 9, 2013) – World Series of Fighting hosted a media conference call on Thursday with “World Series of Fighting 8: Gaethje vs. Patishnock” headliners Justin Gaethje (10-0) and Rich Patishnock (6-1), as well as main-card competitors Anthony Johnson (15-4), Mike Kyle (20-10-1), Jessica Aguilar (16-4) and Alida Gray (4-0). Joining the fighters on the call was WSOF President Ray Sefo and WSOF Executive Vice President Ali Abdelaziz.

World Series of Fighting 8 will take place Saturday, Jan. 18, at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla. Tickets for “World Series of Fighting 8: Gaethje vs. Patishnock,” start at just $29, and are on sale at Ticketmaster.com. The bout tops a five-fight card that airs live on NBCSN at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT. A five-fight undercard will stream live at www.WSOF.com.

The following are highlights from the conference call:

RAY SEFO:
“Obviously 2013 was a great year for World Series of Fighting and we are looking forward to kicking off the year with two world title fights and our first female fight. I couldn’t be any happier than where we are.

“As far as the challenge out there offered to Bellator, I haven’t heard one negative comment about it. Twitter and Facebook are blowing up all day since that challenge was offered and people are saying let’s make it happen. Someone asked me about what the outcome would be and I would say 10 out of 10 in favor of World Series of Fighting.”

ALI ABDELAZIZ:
“Both Justin (Gaethje) and Rich (Patishnock) are great fighters, they come forward and throw punches; they throw bombs. Stylistically this is a great fight. I can see this fight being five rounds of just a brutal blood bath and the fans are going to be the winner for this one.

“The fans are always going to go with the fighters. If Anthony (Johnson)’s contract is over and he wants to go fight for a different promotion then we will give him a big hug and wish him luck. This is 2014. This isn’t boxing. They are different sports. Everyone should have a dream and should pursue them. When Ray, Shawn (Lampman) and I started this promotion we said: fighters first. This is why we have so many fans behind us and supporting us. We may not be the biggest, but we know that the ones who do tune into NBC Sports are truly MMA fans.

“I assure you we have a big fight coming for Nick Newell in 2014. I have probably the biggest fight of his life on the biggest stage. I’ve been planning this for almost seven months. Everything is about timing and Nick just fought. And we can’t just have all the stars on one card. We want to be able to share the stars on different cards.”

JUSTIN GAETHJE:
“I want to thank the World Series of Fighting for selecting me to be the face of their lightweight division. That’s a big thing that they are entrusting me with and I’m excited about that.

“Rich throws a lot of punches and has a great takedown defense. This is a great matchup skill-wise for both of us. It’s going to be an exciting fight and what I really try to do is give the fans an exciting fight. That’s all I can really control.”

RICH PATISHNOCK:
“I was happy I was given this opportunity and I was getting ready for a fight anyway. I didn’t feel much pressure taking this fight on such short notice. You don’t fight for a specific person. You have to fight for yourself and concentrate on what you’re good at. You come up with a game plan but it really never sticks.
Win lose or draw I’m glad I’ve been given this opportunity.”

ANTHONY JOHNSON:
“It’s going to be exciting to get this fight over with. It seems like it’s been about a year. I had to pull out the first time and then Mike had to pull out the second time. But we’re finally getting it done and both of us are healthy.

“Mike is talented and has one of the best camps you can ever go to, AKA. He says he wants to push my cardio, well let’s push it.

“I definitely plan to stay active this year if I can stay injury free and not break my hand any more. But I’m going to definitely try to break my hand on Jan. 18. As far as 2013, it wasn’t a bad year for me. Even though I couldn’t fight for various reasons I was still in the gym helping my teammates. I was satisfied with 2013.

“Fighting for the title isn’t really on my mind right now. The first step is beating Mike Kyle and we’ll go from there.

“I haven’t hit my prime yet. When I do hit my prime, you’ll know.”

MIKE KYLE:
“It’s a bummer fight fans have had to wait this long for this fight to happen. We’re going to let those fans see a great show and I’m just excited to be a part of something like this.

“I really want to push the fight and push his cardio and see what kind of shape he’s really in. This would make for a great championship fight but it is what it is and I’ll wait for my time.”

JESSICA AGUILAR:
“I’m going to give everything I always give and going to leave everything inside the cage. I’m just excited and grateful.

“It’s been seven and a half years of hard training to get my first world title shot. All the hard work and those hours are finally going to pay off.

“We’re going to mix it up. I’m going to go in there and dance and have fun and show some moves out there.”

“Growing up my father was a karate black belt and we would have contests to see who could punch him the hardest in the tummy. And at the end I would always win and he would always say, ‘For being so little, you punch hard.’ I’m not going to predict what’s going to happen. If I knock her out, great. If I tap her out, great. I’m just looking for a win. However it comes I’ll take it.”

ALIDA GRAY:
“I’m very honored to have been picked for this fight. I’m going to bring a fight to Jessica. I hope everybody’s ready for this.

It hasn’t been overwhelming getting ready for this fight. I watched Jessica fight before I turned pro. I told my coach I’m ready for this fight and ready to take these caliber fights. Finally this summer we made the decision that I was going to pro. I know there are a lot of people out there who don’t know my name. She’s out there and she’s well known. She’s No. 1 ranked. But come Jan. 18 people will get to know me.

“I think we’re both very well-rounded fighters. I’ve been practicing on my stand-up. My judo is going to be there naturally. I’m not going to rely on it, I’m going to depend on it.

“I think my advantage is that I’m the underdog. I’m going in there with nothing to lose.”

Undefeated lightweight Justin Gaethje and Rich Patishnock headline World Series of Fighting 8 on Jan. 18 for inaugural lightweight belt

LAS VEGAS (Jan. 6, 2014) – Justin Gaethje (10-0) will face one of MMA’s top prospects in Rich Patishnock (6-1) for the World Series of Fighting’s inaugural lightweight title in the Jan. 18 event titled “World Series of Fighting 8: Gaethje vs. Patishnock,” which takes place at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla.

The co-main event features hard-hitting light-heavyweights Anthony “Rumble” Johnson (15-4) and Mike “MAK” Kyle (20-10-1) meeting in a bout that has been postponed twice due to injuries. The highly anticipated fight, now almost a year in the making, is sure to produce an absolute explosion in the decagon.

“Injuries are an unavoidable aspect of MMA,” said World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo. “I am very proud of my team here at WSOF for finding a very worthy opponent in Rich Patishnock to fight against Justin Gaethje for the title. I know that both of these guys have very crowd-pleasing fighting styles, and I can’t wait to see what happens when that cage door shuts.”

The 25-year-old Gaethje is a member of Colorado’s Grudge Training Center and has already earned World Series of Fighting wins over Dan Lauzon, Brian Cobb and Cavalcante. Fighting professionally since 2011, Gaethje is undefeated in his first 10 career fights, and nine of those have ended via stoppage, including eight by knockout.

Patishnock, a 26-year-old fighting out of Whippany, NJ has made a name for himself in his first two WSOF appearances by defeating two men with the name that is most synonymous with MMA: Gracie. Patishnock defeated Igor Gracie at WSOF 2, and followed that up with a victory over his brother, Gregor Gracie at WSOF 5.

Patishnock’s original opponent, Luis “Baboon” Palomino (21-9) will now face a tough challenge in MMA veteran Jorge “Macaco” Patino (35-14-2-1).

“Macaco,” a Brazilian MMA practitioner, began fighting professionally in 1995 and has had several historic fights including his victory over Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, and two epic battles with recently signed WSOF fighter Jose “Pele” Landi-Jons. The 40-year-old Patino has won both the lightweight and welterweight titles with the Legacy FC promotion, a lightweight title with Predator FC, and fought for UFC welterweight championship against one of the sports legends in Pat Milletich.

The 33-year-old Palomino was born in Peru but now resides in Miami. A black belt in both capoeira and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Palomino is a force on the feet and the floor. A former Championship Fighting Alliance featherweight champion, Palomino recently moved up to lightweight and fell just short in a bid for the promotion’s lightweight title. Palomino also fought five times for Bellator MMA, including a slot on the promotion’s very first show.

Tickets for “World Series of Fighting 8: Gaethje vs. Patishnock,” start at just $29, and are on sale at Ticketmaster.com. The bout tops a five-fight card that airs live on NBCSN at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT. The fights will also be broadcast on Brazilian television network, Esporte Interativo. A six-fight undercard, which will stream live at www.WSOF.com, will be announced shortly.
With the addition to the card, World Series of Fighting 8 now includes:

Justin Gaethje vs. Rich Patishnock for inaugural lightweight title
Anthony Johnson vs. Mike Kyle
Jessica Aguilar vs. Alida Gray for inaugural womens strawweight title
Cody Bollinger vs. Tyson Nam
Luis Palomino vs. Jorge Patino
