World Series of Fighting adds Ashlee Evans-Smith, Emi Fujino, Teddy Holder, Tyler Stinson

LAS VEGAS (Dec. 31, 2013) – The Las Vegas-based World Series of Fighting promotion continues to keep an eye on the future, and the organization is happy to announce the signing of four talented new names to its roster.

The group includes women’s contenders Ashlee Evans-Smith and Emi Fujino, as well as two male counterparts in welterweight Tyler Stinson and light heavyweight Teddy Holder.

All four have signed exclusive, multi-fight deals with World Series of Fighting.

“While our global growth has really been a big story in recent months, I think the real key to our future success is bringing exciting fighters to our promotion,” World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo said. “These four athletes all fit that description, and I look forward to watching each of them step into the World Series of Fighting decagon for the first time.”

Evans-Smith (2-0) is best known for her recent win over transgender fighter Fallon Fox, a win that earned her the Championship Fighting Alliance women’s featherweight tournament title. She’ll now drop down to 135 pounds to compete for World Series of Fighting.

“I’m extremely excited to be working with World Series of Fighting,” Evans-Smith said. “I’ve only heard great things from other fighters and coaches about the promotion, and I think it’s the perfect home for me in this next step of my career.

“A lot of exciting and entertaining fights will happen in 2014. World Series of Fighting, NBCSN and I are going to be making waves, for sure.”

Fujino (13-7) will soon celebrate her 10-year anniversary in the sport, with all 20 of her pro fights taking place in her native Japan. She went 2-1 in 2013, including a pair of submission wins.

“It’s always been my dream to fight overseas, so I was extremely happy to be able to sign with such a big promotion like World Series of Fighting,” Fujino said. “This is a big chance for me because so many fans are going to watch my fights.

“I believe women’s MMA is going to be better and bigger, so I am glad to be a part of sending those messages to MMA fans across the world.”

Competing professionally since 2006. Stinson (25-9) is a Bellator MMA and Strikeforce veteran. He currently owns a two-fight winning streak that includes back-to-back first-round finishes of Rob Kimmons and Zac Kelley. He currently trains alongside World Series of Fighting lightweight title contender Justin Gaethje at Colorado’s Grudge Training Center.

“We had a few offers from different promotions, but World Series of Fighting seemed to make the most sense for me,” Stinson said. “Justin Gaethje is my teammate and my roommate, and he seems to be taken care of really well by the organization. I think it would be really cool to have both of the belts (welterweight and lightweight) at our house by the end of the year.”

Fighting out of Tennessee, Holder (8-1) has been competing professionally since 2008. He took a near-three-year break from competition between 2009 and 2012 but has since returned with a vengeance, racking up six wins in less than 24 months.

Holder is currently riding a seven-fight winning streak, and he’s never fought past the opening round of a bout.

“My dad always used to say, ‘If it ain’t broke don’t fix it,’ so I don’t plan on changing my aggressive style,” Holder said. “I’ll be in your face and looking for finishes.

“I just plan on continuing to get better and adding more tools to my belt, so to speak. As a fan of MMA, I love to see knockouts and finishes. I like watching really aggressive fighters come in, bring it, and let it all hang out. So win lose or draw, when I step in the World Series of Fighting cage, it’s gonna be exciting.”

World Series of Fighting’s next fight card takes place Jan. 18 at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla., and features two championship matchups on the NBCSN-broadcast event.

Fight Network Presents Cage Warriors 63 LIVE this Tuesday, Dec. 31, at 4 p.m. ET

Toronto – Fight Network, the world’s premier 24/7 television channel dedicated to complete coverage of combat sports, wraps up a hectic 2013 Cage Warriors schedule with a live New Year’s Eve broadcast of Cage Warriors 63 from The Helix in Dublin, Ireland, this Tuesday, December 31, at 4 p.m. ET.

In the dual main events, Cage Warriors lightweight champion Stevie Ray will make the first defense of his belt against Ivan Buchinger, while Jim Alers puts his featherweight title up for grabs against Graham Turner.

Ray (14-4) captured the title after emerging victorious from CWFC’s four-man lightweight tournament at Cage Warriors 60 in London earlier this month, courtesy of wins over Jason Ball and Sean Carter.

“I’m very excited to be defending my belt on New Year’s Eve at what looks set to be the biggest Cage Warriors event of the year,” said Ray, who has taken 11 of his 14 wins inside the distance.

“I wanted Buchinger next as he should have been in the tournament final, so I want to show everybody that the result would have been the same anyway. I respect him but the belt will be coming back to Scotland with me.”

Buchinger (24-4) had been due to meet Ray in that Cage Warriors 60 tournament decider but was forced to withdraw after sustaining a rib injury during his semi-final triumph over Mick Sinclair.

The 27-year-old Slovak returns to Dublin on New Year’s Eve following a 3-0 streak this year, as he rebounded impressively from his loss to Conor McGregor on the same date at The Helix in 2012.

Buchinger said: “I’m glad to be getting the shot at the belt that I earned at Cage Warriors 60 and I’m looking forward to coming back to Dublin to try to make amends for my last fight there.

“Steven Ray is a deserving champion but I am determined to take that belt from him on New Year’s Eve. I’m very excited about the opportunity.”

Alers (11-1), who’ll be searching for his seventh consecutive Cage Warriors victory, was crowned CWFC featherweight kingpin back in April when he submitted Joni Salovaara in the fourth round of the Cage Warriors 53 main event in Glasgow to clinch a title that had been vacated by Conor McGregor.

A 26-year-old native of Florida, Alers impressively overcame Martin Svensson by unanimous decision in his debut title defence at Cage Warriors 59 in Cardiff earlier this month.

Having taken all 10 of his previous victories inside the distance – eight via submission – Alers also holds notable wins over Matteus Lahdesmaki, Marcio Cesar and Freddy Assuncao.

“I’m excited go give the Cage Warriors fans the matchup they wanted to see,” said Alers. “I want to fight the best fighters in my division and I feel Graham Turner is the top guy at the moment.”

“Turner is a great guy, I like him a lot, but I’m not going to let that get in the way of me beating him up a bit and keeping my belt wrapped around my waist.”

Turner (23-7), a 25-year-old Scotsman with a kickboxing background, holds a 5-1 record under the Cage Warriors banner and – with the exception of Alers – currently holds more CWFC wins than any other featherweight.

A member of Scotland’s renowned Dinky Ninjas camp, Turner has dropped just two losses in his last 17 outings – to the UFC’s Akira Corassani and top CWFC featherweight Matteus Lahdesmaki.

Since the defeat to Lahdesmaki in February 2012, Turner has rebounded in emphatic fashion, with five straight wins, the most recent of which came at the expense of the previously unbeaten Nad Narimani at Cage Warriors 56 in London this past July.

Turner counts 16 stoppage wins on his record – 14 via (T)KO – and has seen off the likes of Ashleigh Grimshaw, Olivier Pastor and Nathan Beer since making his professional debut in 2005.

He said: “This is going to be a very tough fight; I’m pretty sure it’ll be my hardest to date. I’m excited about the challenge and I feel very honoured to be given this opportunity by Cage Warriors.

“I’d love to get my hands on the Cage Warriors world title. I have the utmost respect for Jim as a fighter and I can’t wait for this challenge. I’m also really looking forward to my first visit to Ireland.”

In another anticipated featured contest, John Maguire will take on home favorite Philip Mulpeter in a 161-pound catch-weight bout.

A two-time winner in the UFC, Maguire (18-6) is currently fifth in the UK’s lightweight rankings and is confident of making a successful start to his spell with Cage Warriors.

“Being the Cage Warriors champion is now my aim and this is the first step on the way to that,” said the 30-year-old Englishman. “Philip Mulpeter, you called down thunder; well now you’ve got it.”

Mulpeter (6-3), like Maguire, sees his future in the 155lbs division having previously competed at welterweight. The 24-year-old was quick to offer Maguire his CWFC debut via Twitter after the signing of the UFC veteran was announced last week, and Cage Warriors officials have duly obliged.

A native of Laois in Ireland, Mulpeter began his move to lightweight with a very impressive second-round TKO of Warren Kee at Cage Warriors 56 in London this past July.

Mulpeter said: “I can’t wait to get back in the cage. My last fight was a good win over a tough opponent but I’m looking to improve again. I’m looking forward to getting another win, especially in my capital city.”

In other marquee matchups, Irishman Paul Redmond (8-3) meets Poland’s Mateusz Teodorczuk (10-2) in a welterweight bout, Ireland’s top female star Aisling Daly (13-5) returns from a year-long hiatus for a strawweight encounter with Venezuelan Muay Thai specialist Karla Benitez (11-5-1) and Englishman Sean Carter (7-1) will be keen to get back to winning ways when he goes up against Irishman Myles Price (7-4).

Undercard bouts include Kieran Davern vs. John Redmond, Amanda English vs. Slavka Vitaly, Chris Boujard vs. Sean Tobin, Kevin Booth vs. Rob Leybourne, Gavin Kelly vs. Dylan Sheehan and Mick Brennan vs. Kieran O’Brien.

World Series of Fighting’s Derrick Mehmen honored with 2013 Bazzie Award

LAS VEGAS, (Dec. 30, 2013) – World Series of Fighting heavyweight Derrick Mehmen provided one of the most memorable knockouts of the year with his stunning finish of Rolles Gracie, and the “Caveman” was awarded a 2013 Bazzie Award for his effort.

Mehmen’s one-punch knockout of Brazilian jiu-jitsu expert Rolles Gracie, who was 8-1 entering the fight, was named the “KO Punch of the Year” at this past weekend’s Bazzie Awards, presented by Kenny Rice and MMA legend Bas Rutten on AXS TV’s weekly MMA news series “Inside MMA.”

“Thank you ‘Inside MMA’ for ‘KO Punch of the Year,'” Mehmen said on the show. “I’d also like to thank my management team, KO Dynasty, American Top Team and Hard Drive Mixed Martial Arts and all my training partners and family and especially all the fans for tuning in and watching my ‘KO Punch of the Year. Look for me in 2014.”

The 28-year-old Mehmen made his World Series of Fighting debut in September at World Series of Fighting 5, where he leveled Gracie with a massive right hand. The power of the blow spun Gracie around before he fell face-first into the canvas in a shocking scene.

Mehmen (16-5) returns to action on Jan. 18, where he meets Scott “The Bear” Barrett (13-3) at “World Series of Fighting 8: Gaethje vs. Gonzalez,” which takes place at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla. The evening’s main card airs on NBCSN following preliminary bouts that stream on World Series of Fighting’s official website, WSOF.com.

Additionally, World Series of Fighting partner Pancrase, a Tokyo-based promotion with 20 years of experience, was also honored at the 2013 Bazzie Awards.

Takuya Eizumi’s slick rolling armbar finish of Teppei Masuda was named the 2013 Bazzie Awards’ “Submission of the Year.” The matchup took place at July’s “Pancrase 250: 2013 Neo-Blood Tournament Finals” event.

World Series of Fighting Japan is set to host its debut event in early 2014.

Jessica Aguilar battles Alida Gray on Jan.18 for inaugural World Series of Fighting women’s strawweight title at World Series of Fighting 8

LAS VEGAS (Dec. 20, 2013) – Next month’s World Series of Fighting 8 event features a second championship matchup, as the No. 1 ranked 115-pound woman in the world, Jessica Aguilar (16-4), meets Alida Gray (4-0) for World Series of Fighing’s inaugural women’s strawweight title.

The bout airs live on NBC Sports Network on the main card of the Jan. 18 event, which takes place at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla.

“We’re excited to host the first-ever women’s bout in the World Series of Fighting decagon, and there’s no better way to do it than with a title on the line,” World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo said. “Jessica Aguilar is currently the absolute best 115-pounder on the planet, but Alida Gray is a lifelong martial artist who has been on an absolute tear since turning her attention to MMA. I can’t wait to see these two clash.”

“Jag” Aguilar is a member of Florida’s famed American Top Team and currently boasts a seven-fight winning streak. She competed most recently in October, when she earned a second career win over her idol and MMA legend Megumi Fujii. Aguilar has lost just once in her past 12 appearances and now makes her World Series of Fighting debut.

“My training is going awesome over here with the best team in the world at ATT,” Aguilar said. “It’s nice to be recognized as the top strawweight in the world, but I’m looking forward to finally receiving a belt and continuing to show the world why I’m the best. I’m honored and grateful for the opportunity to continue doing what I love to do.”

Meanwhile, Gray brings a perfect record to the cage after racking up four stoppage wins in just the past six months alone. Fighting out of Texas’ Bushido MMA, Gray was an alternate on the 1996 U.S. Olympic judo team. She launched an amateur MMA career in 2010 and eventually turned pro earlier this year. Her four victories include a submission win to score Oklahoma’s Sugar Creek Showdown women’s strawweight title, as well as a brutal one-punch knockout of Soannia Tiem.

“I’m excited to get in the decagon,” Gray exclaimed. “This all came very unexpectedly, but I knew it was a great opportunity for me to prove that I belong at the top. This is going to be my first time on national television, but I’m no stranger to big fights. I’m not going to put too much thought into it. I’m confident in my skills, and when I get in there I will shut everyone else out and go home with the belt.”

With the addition to the card, World Series of Fighting 8 now includes:

Justin Gaethje vs. Lewis Gonzalez for inaugural lightweight title
Anthony Johnson vs. Mike Kyle
Jessica Aguilar vs. Alida Gray for inaugural women’s strawweight title
Cody Bollinger vs. Tyson Nam

Undefeated lightweights Justin Gaethje and Lewis Gonzalez headline World Series of Fighting 8 on Jan. 18 for inaugural lightweight belt

LAS VEGAS (Dec. 19, 2013) – Justin Gaethje (10-0) will face a dangerous Lewis Gonzalez (9-0) for the World Series of Fighting’s inaugural lightweight title in the Jan. 18 event titled “World Series of Fighting 8: Gaethje vs. Gonzalez,” which takes place at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla.

The co-main event features hard-hitting light-heavyweights Anthony “Rumble” Johnson (15-4) and Mike “MAK” Kyle (20-10-1) will meet in a bout that has been postponed twice due to injuries. The highly anticipated fight, now almost a year in the making,is sure to produce an absolute explosion in the decagon.

“This past year has been incredible for World Series of Fighting, and I’m proud to be able to carry that success over in the start of 2014 with this incredible lightweight title fight,” World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo said. “I know that both of these guys have great wrestling backgrounds, but their striking is so impressive. I can’t wait for this one.”

The 25-year-old Gaethje is a member of Colorado’s Grudge Training Center and has already earned World Series of Fighting wins over Dan Lauzon, Brian Cobb and Cavalcante. Fighting professionally since 2011, Gaethje is undefeated in his first 10 career fights, and nine of those have ended via stoppage, including eight by knockout.

“I think some of my toughest fights have been against wrestlers, and I know that’s where my opponent is strong,” Gaethje said of his new adversary. “He also has a ton of heart. I see this fight being action-packed from the second the cage door shuts until one of us gets the finish.

“I don’t think there is any way this one goes five rounds. I see a lot of opportunities for some big kicks and knees, and I give my word to the World Series of Fighting fans that Lewis and I will give them one hell of a show.”

Turlock, California’s “Lethal” Lewis Gonzalez is a top prospect in the sport training with the MMAGOLD Fight Team. Gonzalez was impressive in his World Series of Fighting debut this past August, when he beat established fight veteran Antonio McKee.

Gonzalez has won seven of his nine fights by stoppage and saw three of his five submission victims tap due to strikes.

“I’m honored by the opportunity to get in there and bang for the lightweight title,” Gonzalez said. “Justin is a tough competitor and a great wrestler. You can expect both of us to be coming forward the whole time and meet somewhere in the middle.”

With the addition to the card, World Series of Fighting 8 now includes:

Justin Gaethje vs. Lewis Gonzalez for inaugural lightweight title
Anthony Johnson vs. Mike Kyle
Cody Bollinger vs. Tyson Nam

Tickets for “World Series of Fighting 8: Gaethje vs. Gonzalez,” start at just $29, and are on sale at Ticketmaster.com. The bout tops a five-fight card that airs live on NBCSN at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT. A four-fight undercard, which will stream live at www.WSOF.com, will be announced shortly.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Dec. 16, 2013) – Invicta Fighting Championships has appointed recently retired women’s Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) superstar Julie Kedzie as the new matchmaker for the women’s world championship MMA promotion, it was announced today on an all-new edition of “The MMA Hour” web TV program by award-winning host Ariel Helwani.

Kedzie will simultaneously continue to serve as color commentator for Invicta FC television broadcasts, a role that she has played for the promotion since the inaugural Invicta FC live event in April 2012.

“I am excited about this incredible new opportunity that will allow me to remain as active and hands on as ever in contributing to the growth of women’s competition in our great sport,” said Kedzie, a protégé of MMA guru Greg Jackson who retired from competition earlier this month following her 29th professional career bout at UFC Fight Night 33.

“(Invicta FC President) Shannon Knapp has done an unbelievable job at pushing the envelope and helping transform women’s MMA into an aggressively expanding enterprise,” continued Kedzie, “a development that will undoubtedly lead to increased participation in the sport by young women athletes who want to challenge themselves in the world’s fastest growing sport.”

“We are thrilled to expand Julie’s role in the Invicta FC organization and have one of the pioneers of our sport assume the pivotal role of matchmaker under her wing,” said Knapp. “There is no one more qualified than someone like Julie, who has lived and breathed MMA for the last 10 years, to take on the responsibility of nurturing our athletes, building our roster and creating the most exciting matchups possible for our live event series.”

Invicta FC rolled out its final live event of the year on Dec. 7, an explosive, live Pay-Per-View televised world championship doubleheader that saw Barb “Lil’ Warrior” Honchak (9-2) successfully defend her strawweight (125 pounds) title against Leslie “The Peacemaker” Smith (6-4-1) in the main event that was also named “Fight of the Night.”

In the eight-bout card’s co-main event, Lauren Murphy (8-0) extended her perfect record and retained her bantamweight (135 pounds), defeating Miriam “The Queen of Mean” Nakamoto (2-1) by way of TKO (knee injury) in the fourth round (:23).

Fight Network Presents BAMMA 14 LIVE this Saturday, Dec. 14, at 4 p.m. ET

Toronto – Fight Network, the world’s premier 24/7 television channel dedicated to complete coverage of combat sports, presents a live broadcast of BAMMA 14 from Birmingham’s LG Arena this Saturday, December 14, at 4 p.m. ET.

In the main event, British bad boy Paul “Semtex” Daley brings his explosive power as he is set to face Brazilian veteran Romario “Junior Killer” Manoel Da Silva.

Renowned as one of MMA’s most dangerous and exciting strikers, Daley returns to fight for BAMMA for a third time with a current record of 33-12-2. Daley previously headlined BAMMA 5, demolishing YuyaShirai in just 1:46, while BAMMA 7 saw him defeat Jordan Radev by decision. Fighting predominantly internationally since, including Strikeforce and Bellator, Daley is now exclusively signed to BAMMA in the U.K.

Hailing from Brazil and fighting out of the Blackzilians camp, Da Silva has made regular appearances for Shooto Brazil and Jungle Fight in his home country, as well as recent appearances in the U.S. on Legacy and Shark Fights events. Da Silva holds a record of 23-10-1 and he has demonstrated his ability to dominate no matter where the fight goes. Da Silva is looking to leverage his experience to become a name within the sport while he’s still in his prime and he sees a fight for BAMMA as a significant step on that path.

In other action, “TUF: The Smashes” runner-up Colin “Freakshow” Fletcher is set to challenge new BAMMA lightweight champion Mansour Barnaoui for the title.

Touted as one of the world’s hottest unsigned competitors in the lightweight division, Barnaoui fights out of Team Magnum in Paris, with a current record of 10-2 and his two losses via decision. The French Tunisian stunned Curt Warburton at BAMMA 13 when he stopped him via TKO in just 4:08. The new champion wasted no time in calling out BAMMA’s exclusively signed Colin Fletcher to challenge him for the title.

Sunderland’s Fletcher returned to BAMMA from the UFC at BAMMA 13, defeating Welsh talent Tim Newman to bring his record up to 9-3. Fletcher became instantly renowned for his ‘evil clown’ walk-outs and spikey aggression in the cage. Fletcher returned at BAMMA 9 where he clinched a compelling victory over Jason Ball before entering the TV show contest, “The Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes.” His one post-TUF fight with the UFC saw him go the distance with Mike Ricci at UFC 158: St-Pierre vs. Diaz. Following a return to form at BAMMA 13, Fletcher will be looking sustain a winning streak following his derailing of Newman.

Elsewhere on the card, Max Nunes drops in weight for his first fight in the middleweight division against Ion Pascu.

A short notice replacement for BAMMA middleweight champion Scott Askham, Nunes returns from his first career loss at light heavyweight against Jason Jones for the BAMMA title. Prior to that, the London-based Swede was undefeated with a professional MMA record of 11-0 with his first eight victories secured within the first round. Quickly earning a reputation for athleticism and immense physical prowess, the former basketball player created waves internationally. His BAMMA 13 defeat at the hands of Jones was considered by many to be a major upset. BAMMA 14 marks Nunes’ first fight in the middleweight division as he looks to bounce back from his first career loss.

The RomanianPascu hails from Bucharest and fights out of the Ministry of Martial Arts and Golden Glory with a professional record of 7-3. Renowned for his dangerous knockouts, around 50% of his MMA victories have also been scored by TKO. Pascu has fought across various European and British promotions. He is now on a three-fight winning streak, which includes a stunning first-round knockout of Jack Marshman at BAMMA 13.

Rounding out the main card live on Fight Network, Jimmy Wallhead returns to face French welterweight Florent Betorangal.

Wallhead is classed among the U.K.’s mixed martial arts elite. Active professionally since 2005 in both the middleweight and welterweight divisions, the Leicester standout debuted at BAMMA 7 in 2011, where he defeated MMA legend Frank Trigg. Following a knockout demolition of Joey Villasenor at BAMMA 8, Wallhead returned on an exclusive U.K. multi-fight deal to defeat former UFC contender Matt Veach at BAMMA 12 earlier this year. His shot for the BAMMA welterweight title was thwarted at BAMMA 13 by U.S. veteran Eddy Ellis in a controversial judges’ decision that left him reeling. The fight saw Wallhead break both Ellis’ jaw and his own hand in the opening minutes.

At 30 years of age, Betorangal is one year older than his opponent and debuted professionally in 2007, with a background in taekwondo. Training out of Parabellum Combat Club in Paris, France, Betorangal has scored a 14-7 record over his career with the lion’s share of his conquests via submission.

“The fight against Mann was very close but it went to the judges and they gave it his way,” said Pekov. “I won’t make the same mistake against Brum. It won’t be left in the hands of the judges this time.”

Following his impressive stoppage of Vladimir Opanasenko last time out, Jack Mason will be aiming to end the year on a high by picking up his fourth CWFC win of 2013 at the expense of French veteran Seydina Seck, who holds notable victories over the likes of ex-CWFC welterweight champion Gael Grimaud and three-time UFC veteran Simeon Thoresen.

In light-heavyweight action, Egyptian fan-favourite Mohamed Ali will also be eager to clinch his third CWFC triumph of the year when he goes up against England’s James Hurrell.

Elsewhere, Vincent del Guerra and Jake Bostwick will clash in a bout to be contested at a catchweight of 176lbs, and Julien Boussuge will take on Damien Brown in a lightweight bout.

Rounding out the card, Norwegian welterweight sensation Mohsen Bahari seeks his third Cage Warriors win opposite Russian banger Mukhamed Berkhamov, while Norway’s Hakon Foss steps in on short notice for a middleweight clash against Matt Inman.

Later on Dec. 13, Fight Network presents a live presentation of Golden Boy Live! from Indio, Calif. at 10 p.m. ET, as welterweight world title contender Josesito “Riverside Rocky” Lopez battles “Mighty” Mike Arnaoutis, and in the co-feature bout, the NABF/WBO Intercontinental super featherweight title will be on the line between Mexico’s unbeaten Francisco Vargas and Texas’ tough Jerry Belmontes.

The live coverage continues on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 4 p.m. ET as Fight Network airs a live broadcast of BAMMA 14 from Birmingham, U.K., headlined by Paul “Semtex” Daley vs. Romario Manoel Da Silva.

ONE FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP™ SIGNS UNDEFEATED WELTERWEIGHT KING BEN ASKREN

11 December 2013 – Singapore: ONE Fighting Championship™, Asia’s largest mixed martial arts organization with a 90% market share, has capped off the year with a series of high-profile signings, highlighted by the acquisition of undefeated Welterweight kingpin Ben Askren. He joins a list of top mixed martial artists like Dae Hwan Kim, Chris Lokteff, Harris Sarmiento and Aung La Nsang, to recently agree to exclusive contracts.

Ben Askren is a legend in collegiate wrestling with four All-American awards. He finished his wrestling career at the University of Missouri with a record of 153-8. 91 of those victories came by way of pins, which are third most in NCAA Division I history. He also wrestled in the US Olympics team in 2008 before transitioning to mixed martial arts. Since his debut in 2009, he has won twelve bouts in a row in dominating fashion, winning multiple championships and earning a spot as one of the best Welterweights in the world.

A veteran of the MMA scene in South Korea, Dae Hwan Kim will compete on Asia’s largest stage for the first time. The 26 year-old is still undefeated in his mixed martial arts career with eight wins on his record. Kim has fluid boxing and an aggressive fighting style that has served him well. Kim is looking to make waves in ONE FC and with the Bantamweight division arguably the most loaded with talent; it will be interesting to see how Kim compares to fellow contenders Kevin Belingon, Soo Chul Kim and Maskatsu Ueda. He made a successful ONE FC debut, submitting Australian submission grappler Thanh Vu in an exciting contest that displayed Kim’s exciting fighting style.

Aung La Nsang is a Middleweight veteran of Burmese ancestry. Aung is nicknamed “The Burmese Python” for his submission abilities and he has recorded nine submission victories in his career so far. Aung is from the ethic group known as Kachin, and was born in Myitkyina, Myanmar (Burma). He sought refuge in the United States during infighting in the state and began training in MMA while in college. Since then, he has fought in over 20 professional mixed martial arts bouts and spends his free time volunteering in Kachin relief efforts. Aung has stated he hopes to be able to return to Myitkyina and open a gym. He will look to constrict his opponent and continue his string of submission wins in the Middleweight division when he makes his debut in ONE FC.

Chris Lokteff is the top Heavyweight to emerge Australia. He made a convincing statement in his ONE FC debut by defeating top American Heavyweight Tony Johnson In resounding fashion. He stuffed the takedown attempts by Tony Johnson and managed to land an array of devastating kicks and punches that Johnson had no answer for. With the victory, Lokteff extends his record to 11-1, making him one of the top Heavyweight prospects in the world.
Harris Sarmiento is a Lightweight veteran of more than sixty fights. He has competed in top promotions like Strikeforce as well as in smaller promotions in Asia. His Hawaiian warrior spirit shines through in his exciting bouts he puts on everytime he steps in the cage. GEORGI KARAKHANYAN CAPTURES INAUGURAL FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE WITH SUBMISSION VICTORY OVER LANCE PALMER AT WSOF 7

VANCOUVER, (Dec. 7, 2013) -With a nine-fight winning streak to his credit, Georgi Karakhanyan is the World Series of Fighting’s first-ever featherweight champion.

Karakhanyan earned the belt with a slick, third-round submission of previously undefeated contender Lance Palmer in the main event of Saturday’s “World Series of Fighting 7: Karakhanyan vs. Palmer” event, which took place at PNE Agrodome in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The night’s main card aired on NBCSN.

Karakhanyan came out looking to strike, firing off high kicks from range. He also showed some impressive early takedown defense. As Palmer settled in to strike, he reached out with a right hand that saw his open fingers scrape Karakhanyan’s left eye. During the timeout, Karakhanyan repeatedly blinked and wiped the eye but ultimately elected to continue.

Palmer was busier on the restart, kicking the legs and mixing up his striking attacks. But Karakhanyan was happy to answer back, nearly scoring an incredible spinning high kick in the closing moments of the round.

In the second, it was Karakhanyan who accidentally poked his opponent’s eye, though the stoppage was much shorter in duration. Palmer scored a takedown shortly after, but Karakhanyan was quick to nearly turn it into an armbar before eventually getting himself back to the feet. Palmer stayed with the strategy, bringing the fight again to the canvas, where he finished the frame, though Karakhanyan was active underneath.

Palmer kept his pace high in the third, and he was able to match his opponent in the striking department. Midway through the round, he pushed an off-balance Karakhanyan to the floor and moved to his opponent’s back. Karakhanyan defended well and eventually turned into the hold. Then, in an impressive transition, he wrapped his arm around the neck and locked in a guillotine choke attempt, rolling over again to squeeze the hold and earn the tap with 20 seconds remaining in the round.

“Lance Palmer is a great fighter,” Karakhanyan said after the win. “He comes from a good wrestling background. My coach, Romie Aram told me to keep it standing and pick him apart, but Lance was trying to drag me down. It was a very tough fight, but if I put that guillotine on you, I don’t care who you are, you’re tapping.”

In the night’s co-feature, Jesse Taylor (27-9) was dominant in a three-round decision win over Elvis Mutapcic (13-3) and will now face David Branch for World Series of Fighting’s inaugural middleweight title.

Taylor took the fight immediately to the floor in the opening round and swarmed his opponent with ground-and-pound blows. Taylor sliced open his foe with vicious work and continually looked for potential submission opportunities or improved positions.

Taylor pushed in quickly again in the second, and though Mutapcic was ready with a guillotine attempt, his opponent popped his head free and again set up in top position. Mutapcic earned a reprieve when the action stalled, but as he pushed in and went for an arm-triangle choke, Taylor simply rolled over and swept to the top.

The final round was a carbon copy of the first two, as Taylor overwhelmed Mutapcic with superior wrestling skills and shut down any sort of counter attack before it became a real threat, and he was awarded the fight with scores of 30-27 on all three cards.

“Elvis is a tough, standup guy,” Taylor said. “I wanted to ensure the win.

“The belt’s going to be mine, I assure you that. The belt’s mine.”

Inspirational congenital amputee Nick Newell (11-0) kept his record perfect, tapping out Sabah Fadai (7-3) in picking up his 10th first-round stoppage win.

Newell looked to strike in the early going, as he established range with his opponent. He earned a takedown in the opening minute, snatching a single-leg and sweeping out the other. Fadai immediately scrambled back to his feet, but Newell followed and latched in a standing guillotine choke. The hold was tight, and Newell squeezed until he got the tap just 81 seconds into the fight.

Following the win, Newell – who now boasts back-to-back submission wins under the World Series of Fighting banner – angled for a shot at the winner of the World Series of Fighting 8 lightweight title fight between Justin Gaethje and “Lethal” Lewis Gonzalez.

“I think you know there’s a vacant belt out there,” Newell said. “We’ve got two guys fighting for it, and I think everybody knows who’s next.”

In the evening’s first main-card matchup, light heavyweights Kalib Starnes and Dwayne Lewis went toe-to-toe from the opening bell, happily trading shots in the pocket. Starnes looked to wobble his opponent a few times in the early going, but he couldn’t find the finishing blow.

That changed in the second.

As Starnes continued to establish his rhythm, he turned up the volume and backed Lewis to the cage. From there, he unleashed a barrage of strikes that included a short left elbow that sent Lewis crashing to the canvas 62 seconds into the second round, and the fight was immediately waved off.

Starnes, who has now won four consecutive fights, said his opponent’s vaunted knockout power didn’t exactly live up to its billing.

“I saw a few times when I would let go and he would cover up against the fence, it looked like he was maybe ready to go,” Starnes said. “I heard a lot about his right-hand power. He knocked out a lot of guys. Once I felt it, it wasn’t really as hard as I thought it would be.”

In the night’s featured prelim, welterweight Michael “The Messenger” Hill (6-2) was awarded a TKO win over Richard Arsenault (9-3), albeit in unfortunate fashion.

Arsenault appeared to suffer some type of injury in the opening round, as he took an awkward step and struggled to support his own weight. Hill seized the opportunity and went on the attack, but a gritty Arsenault refused to quit, hanging on until the bell and limping to his corner.

In the second, Arsenault simply couldn’t support the weight, and he fell to the floor early in the frame. Hill backed away and brought him back to the feet, where it was painfully obvious he was unable to properly stay upright. The doctor was brought in to make a call, and while Arsenault insisted he was willing to fight on one leg, it was wisely decided he shouldn’t attempt to do so, and Hill was awarded the TKO win.

In a middleweight battle of British Columbia residents, David “Showtime” Perron (6-2) earned an impressive submission win over Matt “The Riotmaker” Baker (9-5), bringing a huge cheering section to a frenzy.

It was Baker who charged forward from the opening bell, delivering a huge slam and driving Perron to the canvas. Perron scrambled into a guillotine choke, but he couldn’t lock in the hold and was forced to let go. When he did, Baker looked to attack, but Perron transitioned into an immediate triangle choke that forced his opponent to tap at the 1:46 mark of the opening round.

In a 15-minute lightweight affair, late replacement Gabriel Solorio (10-6) survived some early trouble to bounce back for a come-from-behind decision win over Shawn Albrecht (9-6).

Albrecht looked prepared to end the fight in the first, as he took his opponent’s back and searched for the choke. But Solorio patiently worked himself free and then proved the more aggressive fighter over the final two frames.

Albrecht took a knee to the groin late in the third, briefly halting the action. On the restart, he went on the attack, but it was too little, too late, and Solorio was awarded a unanimous-decision win, 29-28 on all three cards.

In a gritty lightweight affair, Myles “The Cowboy” Merola (11-7) grinded out “Dirty” Dan Ring (5-2-1) en route to unanimous-decision win.

After a grappling-heavy opening round, Merola looked to finish the fight in the second frame, as he latched on to a guillotine that seemed to cinch tighter and tighter. Ring kept his composure and was able to break free from the hold, but he would find further trouble as the bout continued.

In the final round, Ring further damaged his chances by landing three short kicks from his back to a kneeling Merola and losing a point for the infraction. At the final bell, Merola was awarded the win, 29-27 on all three judges’ cards.

In the night’s first contest, middleweight Brendan Kornberger (4-0) kept his perfect record intact with a devastating TKO victory over “Mitey” Micah Brakefield (3-2) at 2:45 of round 2.

The taller Brakefield was able to control the pacing in the opening round, but that changed in the second. Kornberger brought the fight to the floor, and a few thunderous elbows stunned Brakefield before a flurry of punches sealed the deal. With Kornberger teeing off with power strikes, Brakefield’s corner threw in the towel, ending the fight at the 2:45 mark of the round.

Font stays hot with seventh consecutive win; Soukhamthath sets new CES benchmark

LINCOLN, R.I. (Dec. 6th, 2013) – New England’s hottest fighter added another big win to his resume Friday night at Twin River Casino in the finale of Classic Entertainment & Sports’ 2013 mixed martial arts Fight Series.

Reading, Mass., featherweight Rob Font (8-1) won his seventh consecutive bout, smothering Canadian challenger Matt DiMarcantonio (4-4) in the main event of “CES MMA XX,” beating DiMarcantonio by unanimous decision, 30-27, on all three scorecards.

Font’s ground-and-pound was too much for the lanky DiMarcantonio to overcome. Font started each of the final two rounds with loud takedowns and kept DiMarcantonio on the defensive throughout, using short elbows in the half-guard position to prevent his opponent from climbing back to his feet.

As he and his family prepare to move to Florida, Woonsocket, R.I., bantamweight Andre Soukhamthath (7-1) ended 2013 in equally impressive fashion and become the winningest fighter in CES MMA history, stopping tough veteran Corey Simmons (5-6) of Defiance, Ohio at the bell in the opening round of Friday’s co-feature.

Soukhamthath finished the round strong, stunning Simmons with a series of short right elbows, opening a cut near Simmons’ right eye. The ringside physician examined the cut and allowed Simmons to continue, but Simmons began dry-heaving in the corner before the start of the second round and eventually fell flat on his back, forcing referee Kevin MacDonald to stop the bout. Soukhamthath, who has now won seven consecutive to break a tie with Todd Chattelle as CES’ winningest fighter, will begin training with the famed Blackzilians in Boca Raton and continue fighting in the northeast in 2014.

Fighting for a chance to compete for the vacant CES MMA lightweight title in 2014, Providence’s own Luis Felix (10-7) once again stepped up on the big stage, defeating the tough Lucas Cruz (6-2) of Somerville, Mass., by split decision, 29-28, 28-29, 29-28 in a special lightweight title eliminator bout.

Felix, who also owns wins over Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) took control of the fight in the second round, striking Cruz with a series of leg kicks to the head and overhand rights, causing tremendous swelling and bleeding under Cruz’s left eye. The action slowed to a crawl in the third round, but Felix had already done enough to win the fight by a slim margin, eliminating Cruz from title contention.

Showcasing his incredible strength and poise, Dedham, Mass., welterweight Brett Oteri (12-5) earned a stunning submission win over the dangerous Dennis Olson (13-8) at the 2:16 mark of the second round. With his back to the cage midway through the round, Oteri began to lock in the kimora. Olson tried to counter with a slam, but Oteri kept it locked in and eventually forced Olson to tap out, ending Oteri’s two-fight losing streak in dramatic fashion. Olson, who previously submitted Chattelle in April, lost for the fourth time in six fights.

In what might have been the knockout of the night – and perhaps the most exciting knockout of 2013 – East Providence, R.I., lightweight Nate “The Snake” Andrews (6-0, 3 KOs) made quick work of Franklin Isabel (4-6) knocking out the Chelsea, Mass., native with a left rear leg kick to the back of the neck at the 51-second mark of the opening round. Isabel tried to catch Andrews off guard at the opening bell, rushing out of his corner toward his opponent, but Andrews got back on his feet, kept his poise and then ended the bout seconds later with a perfectly-executed rear leg kick, sending Isabel face-first to the canvas. Andrews finished 2013 with a perfect 4-0 record.

Making his comeback to mixed martial arts following a short-lived retirement, Providence’s Greg Rebello (17-5, 9 KOs) returned in spectacular fashion, stopping fellow heavyweight John Doyle (10-21) of Newark, N.J., in a rematch of their 2010 bout at the 3:10 mark of the second round. Rebello earned the win with unanswered strikes, taking Doyle to the canvas and peppering his opponent with a flurry of right hooks before MacDonald stopped the fight. Rebello also beat Doyle three years ago by unanimous decision.

Also returning to Rhode Island, former Johnson & Wales University wrestling star Charles Rosa (6-0), now fighting and training out of Boynton Beach, Fla., ended 2013 with a bang, submitting the game Ralph Johnson (6-8) of Worcester, Mass., via the anaconda choke at the 3:03 mark of the opening round. Rosa won for the third time in as many bouts at Twin River.

East Providence, R.I., welterweight Eric Spicely (3-0) kept his perfect record intact Friday in the opening bout with a win over Tyler Rose (1-1) of North Branford, Conn., who was forced to withdraw when the ringside physician stopped the bout due to a left shoulder injury sustained by Rose in the opening round. The bout was scored a technical knockout win for Spicely at the 5-minute mark of the first round.

Making his northeast debut, former collegiate wrestling champion TJ Hepburn (2-0) of East Ledyard, Conn. (Kearney, Neb.), won for the second time in as many bouts, submitting the game Tundee Odumuso (1-2) of nearby Johnston, R.I., via rear-naked choke at the 2:27 mark of the third round. Hepburn scored takedowns toward the end of the first and second rounds and then caught Odumuso early in the third before submitted midway through.

Making his professional debut, West Roxbury, Mass., featherweight Ruso Khubejashvili (1-0) showed the poise of a veteran, outworking Thomas Evans (2-3) of Central Falls, R.I., over the course of three rounds to secure a 30-27 unanimous decision win on all three scorecards. Evans, who was looking to snap a two-fight losing streak, failed to use his height and length to his advantage and instead found himself on the defensive for most of the fight while Khubejashvili executed effective ground-and-pound.

CAST REVEALED FOR THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER® NATIONS: CANADA VS. AUSTRALIA

Las Vegas, Nevada – Coming this January, the spotlight will shine on a new class of hungry, talented and determined fighters as The Ultimate Fighter® Nations: Canada vs. Australia showcases the newest crop of fighters on the Ultimate Fighting Championship® (UFC®) organization’s storied reality series. Series veterans Patrick Côté (20-8) and Kyle Noke (20-6-1) lead a cast of welterweight (170lbs) and middleweight (185lbs) fighters, as Canada and Australia go head-to-head in the fifth international edition of the show.

Eight Aussies made their way to the Great White North to live and train together with eight Canadians in the most challenging sports tournament on television. Filmed just north of Montreal, the fighters spend six grueling weeks competing and fine-tuning their Mixed Martial Arts skills for a shot at a six-figure contract with the UFC®.

Watch here to meet the newest cast of Ultimate Fighters: http://www.ufc.com/media/TUF-Nations–Meet-the-Fighters

“If guys thought fighting in the toughest tournament on television was hard, imagine how they feel doing it with a whole country on their shoulders,” said UFC President Dana White. “These country vs. country seasons of The Ultimate Fighter are awesome because not only do these guys deal with living in a house with other fighters, training twice a day and putting everything on the line for their dream opportunity, but now it’s even more personal – it’s patriotic. Next season, we lined up one of the deepest talent pools with some of the toughest up and coming fighters and put national bragging rights on the line along with the UFC contract, as Canada and Australia go head-to-head to kick off 2014.”

Below is a full list of competitors by country and in alphabetical order (name, professional MMA record, age, fighting out of):

Originally from Rimouski, Quebec, the bilingual fighter was the first Canadian to reach the series final, and remains only one of two Canadian fighters’ to have done so. Côté then went on a five-fight win streak in the UFC, earned a shot at then-UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.

Noke, a native of Dubbo, New South Wales, joined the reality series ranks when he fought his way onto season 11, The Ultimate Fighter®: Team Liddell vs. Team Ortiz. He was Hall of Famer Liddell’s No.1 pick, and reached the quarterfinals. He has since gone 4-2 in the UFC, including an impressive Submission of the Night win over Chris Camozzi and a devastating KO last time out over Charlie Brenneman.

The series will have 12 episodes, Wednesday’s on FOX Sports 1, with each episode’s winner advancing in the single-elimination tournament, and culminating in a three-hour finale.

Many of today’s most recognizable names in the UFC have emerged from The Ultimate Fighter series, which produced champions such as Forrest Griffin, Rashad Evans and Matt Serra and season winners Michael Bisping, Ryan Bader and Nate Diaz. This will be Australia’s second participation in the series, having taken part in the second international edition battling the U.K. in The Ultimate Fighter The Smashes: U.K. vs. Australia.

Former championship wrestler returns to New England Friday for Twin River debut in MMA

LINCOLN, R.I. (Dec. 5th, 2013) – With roots already planted in three separate states, former national championship wrestler T.J. Hepburn is looking to plant one more in the competitive world of mixed martial arts.

Hepburn, a New Jersey native who grew up in Connecticut and wrestled collegiately in Nebraska, will return to the cage for the first time in more than a year on Friday, Dec. 6th, 2013 at Twin River Casino when he faces Rhode Islander Tundee Odumoso (1-1) on the undercard of “CES MMA XX” presented by Classic Entertainment & Sports.

Whether MMA is a legitimate career move or just a passing fancy for Hepburn (1-0, 1 KO) remains to be seen, but the scrappy, 5-foot-7 lightweight hopes to have an answer by the end of 2014, making Friday’s fight against Odumoso an important barometer as he moves forward with his career.

“I have a wife and two kids,” Hepburn said, “so if it doesn’t work for me this year, it’s the end of the road.

“Because I was a national championship wrestler, people automatically assume my goal is to get to the [Ultimate Fighting Championships], but the most important thing for me is to make sure my children have clothes on their back.

“I’ll see where this takes me.”

The 24-year-old Hepburn already has a backup plan; he’s a manager at the Grappler’s Lair in Kearney, Neb., where he currently trains, plus he has a bachelor’s degree in sports administration and physically education from the University of Nebraska-Kearney and plans on becoming a certified personal trainer in 2014.

A career in MMA may or may not be the right move, but, given Hepburn’s impressive wrestling background, it would’ve been a shame if he didn’t test the waters at some point. After moving to East Ledyard, Conn., in 2003, Hepburn became a four-time state finalist and three-time state champion at East Ledyard High, finishing with a near-perfect record of 200-4.

At UNK, he exceled in the 157-pound weight class, earning NCAA Division II All-American honors three times before ending his career as the D-II national champion in 2012. The decision to step into the cage later that year wasn’t exactly spur of the moment; Hepburn fought two amateur MMA bouts in 2007 and 2008 as an 18-year-old up-and-comer and one more in March of 2012 before making his professional debut three months later.

Ironically, the highly-decorated wrestler won that fight by first-round knockout, using a flurry of punches to stop Jeremy Mier with one second remaining.

“People have the wrong perspective about wrestlers not being able to throw hands,” Hepburn said. “Wrestling is such a hard sport to learn. If anything, we pick things up a lot faster than most fighters.”

Since his debut more than a year ago, fights have been hard to come by for Hepburn. On three separate occasions, a potential fight fell through when the opponent pulled out at the last minute. Then a promoter asked him to drop to 145 pounds, which Hepburn – who walks around at 170 – refused to do. As the disappointments added up, Hepburn began questioning his future in MMA.

“Starting your training camp, cutting weight and preparing for a fight is a big sacrifice,” he said. “To do that three times with a wife and two kids and not have a fight in the end is tough.”

Even Friday’s fight almost fell through a few weeks ago, but CES matchmaker Pat Sullivan promised Hepburn he’d make sure he’d have an opponent, so Hepburn stayed up north with family and friends until he got the phone call.

In addition to the uncertainty surrounding his next fight, Hepburn also dealt with the death of his 33-year-old sister, who passed away recently following a 29-year, on-and-off battle with cancer.

“She was a fighter, that’s for sure,” Hepburn said. “Losing her was tough to handle, but the show must go on.”

What happens beyond Friday is anyone’s guess. Hepburn would prefer to fight in New England “two or three times a year,” but admits he still considers MMA a “hobby” until he figures out whether or not it can evolve into a legitimate career.

“I train, I work hard, and I have two kids,” he said, “so I definitely need to make money.”

Tickets for “CES MMA XX” are priced at $40.00, $55.00, $100.00 and $125.00 (VIP) and can be purchased by calling 401-724-2253/2254, online at www.cesmma.com or www.ticketmaster.com, or at Players Club at Twin River.

Headlining the event, Boston, Mass., native Rob Font (7-1, 2 KOs), the reigning CES MMA featherweight champion, will put his record on the line in the main event against Canadian challenger Matt DiMarcantonio (4-3), while Providence, R.I., veteran Luis Felix (9-7, 3 KOs) and Boston’s Lucas Cruz (6-1, 2 KOs) will battle for lightweight supremacy in the highly-anticipated co-feature.

Also on the undercard, Woonsocket, R.I., featherweight Andre Soukhamthath (6-1, 3 KOs) will aim for his fourth win of the year and seventh consecutive overall, the latter which would make him the winningest fighter in CES MMA history, breaking a tie with the aforementioned Chattelle. Soukhamthath will face 5-foot-7 challenger Corey Simmons (5-5) of Defiance, Ohio.

In another battle between two of the region’s top fighters in the welterweight division, fifth-ranked Brett Oteri (11-5, 1 KO) of Dedham, Mass., will face Dennis Olson (13-7, 1 KO) of Amherst, N.H., formerly ranked No. 1 in the 185-pound weight class. Olson last fought at Twin River in April when he submitted Todd Chattelle in the opening round of their main-event rematch.

Not to be outdone, Providence light heavyweight Greg Rebello (15-5, 8 KOs) will end his short-lived retirement and return to the cage Friday following a loss in his last bout in June. Once considered the top fighter in his weight class in New England, Rebello won 11 consecutive fights between 2006 and 2010 before a tough loss to Dan Cramer at the Bellator Fighting Championships. After losing a split decision to Lewis Rumsey in June – his third loss in six fights – Rebello announced his retirement, but has decided to resume his career Friday in CES MMA’s 20th celebration show.

The undercard of “CES MMA XX” will also feature the return of fan-favorite Charles Rosa (5-0, 2 KOs), a rising star in the lightweight division who wrestled collegiately at Providence’s Johnson & Wales University before returning home to Boynton Beach, Fla., but still maintains a strong fan base in Rhode Island. Rosa made his CES debut in October with an impressive submission win over Steve McCabe and will now face the dangerous Ralph Johnson (6-8, 6 KOs) of Worcester, Mass., who is coming off an impressive, first-round knockout win over Jason Ward in November, making that six first-round knockout wins for the 6-foot-5 slugger in his career.

Looking to keep his perfect record intact, East Providence, R.I., lightweight Nate Andrews (5-0, 2 KOs) will step up face seasoned Miamisburg, Ohio, veteran Tyler Combs (13-11, 8 KOs), while another unbeaten prospect, Providence welterweight Eric Spicely (2-0) will return for his third and final fight of 2013 when he faces Connecticut native Tyler Rose (1-0) in a three-round bout. Providence featherweight Tom Evans (2-2, 1 KO) will look to snap a two-fight losing streak when he faces Ruso Khubejashvili (3-2) of Massachusetts. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

“World Series of Fighting 8: Gaethje vs. Cavalcante” Set for January 18 at Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida

LAS VEGAS (December 4, 2013) – “World Series of Fighting” (WSOF) returns to the Sunshine State as “World Series of Fighting 8: Gaethje vs. Cavalcante,” hits the ring January 18, 2014 at Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla. Tickets, which start at just $33, go on sale at Ticketmaster.com this Friday, December 6, at 10 a.m. (EST).

In the night’s headlining contest, undefeated contender Justin Gaethje (10-0) meets Brazilian veteran Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante (18-7-1) for the right to be called “World Series of Fighting’s” inaugural lightweight champion.

The co-feature sees light-heavyweight sluggers Anthony “Rumble” Johnson (15-4) and Mike “MAK” Kyle (20-10-1) clash in a rescheduled matchup that seems sure to produce fireworks.

The night’s four-fight main card airs live on NBCSN at 9 p.m. (EST)/6 p.m. (PST).

“This has been an incredible year for ‘World Series of Fighting,’ and we’re excited to announce that our first event of 2014 will feature another championship fight,” said Ray Sefo, World Series of Fighting president. “Justin and ‘JZ’ looked well on their way to putting on a fantastic fight in their first meeting before an early cut ended the fight. Justin wants to prove he was deserving of that win, while ‘JZ’ hopes to erase the frustration of the loss. The victor will prove his point and also walk away with our first-ever lightweight title.”

The 25-year-old Gaethje is a member of Colorado’s Grudge Training Center and has already earned WSOF wins over Dan Lauzon, Brian Cobb and Cavalcante. Fighting professionally since 2011, Gaethje is undefeated in his first 10 career fights, and nine of those have ended via stoppage, including eight by knockout.

“It feels like all of the hard work is paying-off by getting to showcase my skills on the headliner of one of the most respected new promotions in the MMA world,” Gaethje shared. “That being said, I find it offensive that Gesias can find the courage to lock himself in a cage with me again. I’m pushing myself like never before, because come January 18th, I have one goal and that is to put Cavalcante to sleep.”

Meanwhile, Blackzilian fighter Cavalcante is 2-1 in the decagon, sandwiching wins over Tyson Girffin and T.J. O’Brien around the March 2013 loss to Gaethje. A veteran of the sport since 2004, Cavalcante has also competed for Strikeforce, DREAM and K-1. Early in his career, Cavalcante scored two tournament wins while competing for K-1 Hero’s, but the WSOF lightweight title would certainly mark the high point of the 30-year-old’s professional career.

“World Series of Fighting 8” marks the promotion’s first event of 2014. On Saturday, the company holds its final event of this year, traveling to Canada for the NBCSN-broadcast “World Series of Fighting 7: Karakhanyan vs. Palmer” event.

Tickets cost $33, $63, $103, $143 and $243, all seats are reserved and available to purchase at Ticketmaster outlets online at www.myhrl.com, ticketmaster.com or charge by phone: 1-800-745-3000. *Additional fees may apply.
