COURT RULING SUPPORTS ULTIMATE FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP’S FIGHT TO LEGALIZE MIXED MARTIAL ARTS IN NEW YORK

Las Vegas, Nev. – The Ultimate Fighting Championship® (UFC®), and plaintiffs in the Jones v. Schneiderman case, are pleased to announce that yesterday the Federal District Court found that their challenge to the constitutionality of New York’s ban on mixed martial arts (MMA) can go forward. The court recognized that the State Athletic Commission and the Attorney General have repeatedly changed position on whether amateur and professional MMA can occur lawfully in the state of New York, which plaintiffs argue renders the ban unconstitutionally vague. While other claims in the lawsuit were dismissed, the UFC and plaintiffs are prepared to win their case and defeat the ban with the court’s green light on the vagueness challenge.

“We are extremely pleased with the judge’s decision and looking forward to moving to a prompt and successful conclusion,” said Barry Friedman, who is representing the plaintiffs with Morrison & Foerster as co-counsel.

Zuffa LLC, which owns the UFC, filed a federal lawsuit in New York challenging the state’s ban on professional MMA in 2011. Of the 48 states with athletic commissions, New York is the only state that has a ban on the sport. New York passed a law prohibiting MMA events in 1997 identifying it as a “combative sport” unlike boxing, wrestling or karate which are legal. The UFC produces over 30 live events a year, broadcast in 882 million homes in more than 145 countries, with an adopted set of rules and regulations to ensure the safety of the sport.

“We are pleased with the outcome of this crucial ruling. The inconsistency has cost the UFC considerable time and expense, but more important it has deprived MMA’s countless New York fans of the opportunity to attend and enjoy live professional and amateur MMA events in New York,” said Ike Lawrence Epstein, UFC’s COO. “It is time for New York to have a new law on MMA, one that legalizes the sport and regulates it in a safe way, as all other states have done. New York’s law is outdated, written at a time when MMA was a very different sport.”

Several fighters are plaintiffs in the case challenging the constitutionality of the ban including UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, as well as UFC superstars Frankie Edgar, Matt Hamill, and Brian Stann.

Should the case not be resolved at the District Court level, plaintiffs intend to appeal the First Amendment ruling.

World Series of Fighting acquires Canada’s Aggression Fighting Championship

LAS VEGAS (Oct. 2, 2013) – With a new global partnership with IMG Media now in place, the Las Vegas-based World Series of Fighting promotion is ready to step outside the U.S.

World Series of Fighting has acquired Canada’s top MMA promotion, Aggression Fighting Championship, and will launch World Series of Fighting Canada beginning with a Dec. 7 event at Vancouver’s PNE Agrodome. The main event sees hard-hitting light heavyweight Anthony “Rumble” Johnson (15-4) take on knockout artist Mike “MAK” Kyle (20-10-1), as well as a rescheduled middleweight tournament semifinal bout between Elvis “The King” Mutapcic (13-2) and Jesse “JT Money” Taylor (26-9).

“The launch of World Series of Fighting Canada is an incredibly exciting announcement for our promotion,” World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo said. “From the beginning, we have maintained our desire to bring our elite-level mixed martial arts action to Canada and the great MMA fans that live there, as well as markets around the globe. We embrace this new division of our company that will allow us to make great strides into Canada, which has long proven to have one of the most passionate and knowledgeable MMA fan bases in the world.”

Johnson has already competed twice for World Series of Fighting, earning a hard-fought decision win over former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski in March, as well as a highlight-reel first-round knockout of D.J. Linderman in the promotion’s debut event.

Kyle is a highly respected competitor of the sport who boasts a solid record stacked with knockout wins. The 33-year-old slugger counts 13 such victories among his 20 career wins.

In the night’s co-feature, Mutapcic and Taylor finally meet in the cage after the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board delayed their planned September fight. The winner of the bout moves on to meet David Branch for World Series of Fighting’s middleweight title.

Further details for “World Series of Fighting 7: Johnson vs. Kyle,” which will feature a blend of established World Series of Fighting talent and some of Canada’s brightest prospects, which will be announced shortly. Like World Series of Fighting’s U.S.-based shows, the event will air live domestically and on NBCSN. International broadcast plans will be revealed in the coming weeks.

“This is an incredible opportunity for us to showcase our Canadian fighters on a massive platform with NBC Sports Network as well as other network partners,” World Series of Fighting Canada Chief Operating Officer Darren Owen said. “Our fans will be getting the chance to see world-class MMA fights, and they will be able to enjoy exciting events across our great country. We couldn’t be more excited for both our fighters and fight fans across Canada. We are thrilled to become part something as big as the World Series of Fighting Canada.”

With the launch of World Series of Fighting Canada, the brand will aggressively expand its global reach and also provide a five-star platform for top Canadian talent.

“I couldn’t be more motivated and excited to make this announcement,” World Series of Fighting Canada Chief Financial Officer Steve Fader said. “We’ve always wanted to do what’s best for the fighters and fans, and this next step clearly does both. World Series of Fighting Canada will allow us to showcase all the top-level talent Canada has to offer. We will be putting on shows bigger and better than ever, coast to coast.”

Three new preliminary contests added to World Series of Fighting 6 lineup

The lineup for World Series of Fighting’s first-ever trip to Florida continues to fill with the addition of three new preliminary contests, including lightweights Luiz “Buscape” Firmino (16-6) vs. Jacob “Feelgood” Volkmann (16-4), featherweights Nick LoBosco (6-0) vs. Fabio Mello (11-6) and featherweights Alexandre “Pulga” Pimentel (12-1) vs. Jade Porter (9-3).

The night’s NBCSN-televised main card is headlined by the first title fight in World Series of Fighting history, as Josh “The People’s Warrior” Burkman (26-9) meets Steve Carl (20-3) for the promotion’s first welterweight belt.

The new matchups help to fill out World Series of Fighting 6’s preliminary card, which takes place Oct. 26 at BankUnited Center in Coral Gables, Fla., and precedes the evening’s NBSCN live network broadcast. The preliminary bouts stream on World Series of Fighting’s official website, WSOF.com.

Brazilian veteran Firmino has fought around the globe, including stints in Japanese promotions DREAM and PRIDE. Firmino currently boasts a three-fight win streak and recently picked up the Florida-based Championship Fighting Alliance’s lightweight title. An Imperial Athletics fighter, Mello’s career is dotted with the names of true MMA royalty in past opponents like Jose Aldo, Takanori Gomi and Masakazu Imanari, among others.

A former Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion, Pimentel looks to rebound from the first loss of his professional MMA career, after falling short against Rick Glenn at March’s World Series of Fighting 2 event. Lightweight Title on the Line at this Saturday’s CageSport XXVII

Tacoma, WA (September 30th, 2013) – Halquist Productions is returning to the Emerald Queen Casino this Saturday with the Northwest’s premier MMA promotion, CageSport. Headlining the 10 fight professional MMA card will be Lacey’s Harrison Bevens (6-1) taking on Enumclaw’s Justin Harrington 5-0) for the CageSport lightweight title. In the semi-main event, StrikeForce veteran, Cory Devela (8-5) will look to make his comeback to the sport in a match up with Everett’s Byron Sutton (7-3).

A limited amount of tickets are still available for CageSport XXVII and can be purchased at the Emerald Queen Casino box office or through Ticketmaster. Prices start at $35. Northwest fight fans are encouraged to get their tickets early as the showroom is expected to be sold out.

In what will be the toughest fight of each fighter’s career so far, Bevens and Harrington are gearing up for their first five round battle due to the title being on the line. Chances are though is this fight may not take all five rounds to decide who the winner is as the combined record between the two is 11-1 with ten of those victories being finished before time is up.

Bevens who trains out of The Academy of Brian Johnson in Lacey is coming off one of the most exciting finishes of his career. In front of a sold out CageSport XXVI card in August, Bevens took a close fight into the third round where he then landed a stunning knockout to end the fight and ultimately give him a shot at the title.

“Justin is a tough opponent and I’m a tougher fight for him than anyone else,” said Bevens, when asked about his upcoming title fight. “I can’t wait for this. It’s going to be two bulls going at it.”

Harrington, training out of Jeff Hougland’s Combat Sport and Fitness in Enumclaw, is coming off a just as impressive victory at CageSport XXVI. After starting off his professional career with two knockout victories, Harrington has finished his last three fights via first round submission; including his victory over Levi Peaslee with an arm triangle choke 1:36 into the first round at CageSport XXVI

Cory Devela, training with Dennis Hallman at his gym in Lakewood, last stepped into the cage in 2010 in what turned into his third consecutive loss fighting for StrikeForce. He’ll be looking to right the ship and strive once again to catch national MMA attention.

The undercard seen below features a thundering lineup full of local Northwest fighters:

Josh Solis (2-0) vs. Ricky Satterwhite(debut) at 155+1
Hadley Griffith (1-0) vs. Amy Cadwell (debut) at 125+1
Trent Tyler (0-1) vs. Steve Simpson (0-1) at 185+1
Emanuel Russell (2-0) vs. Chaz Gurule (1-1) at 140+1
Hector Lopez (1-0) vs. Soloman Jones (1-1) at 125+1
Dex Montenegro (2-1) vs. Jorge Alba (0-1) at 145+1
Rob Cann (debut) vs. Dylan Morgan (debut) at 145+1
Tyson Cunningham (debut) vs. Kyle Maloney (debut) at 170+1

Doors for CageSport XXVII open at 6 PM with the first fight scheduled for 7 PM. Halquist Productions’ CageSport MMA continues to be the leading MMA promotion in the northwest, featuring all pro cards, and the most talented fighters in the region. Fighters such as: Miesha Tate, Bryan Caraway, Sam Sicilia, and Michael Chiesa have all fought on previous CageSport cards on their way to the UFC where they are still currently fighting. For more information about CageSport XXVII and all other Halquist Production events, please visit www.halquistproductions.com and the official Facebook and Twitter Pages of CageSport MMA and Battle at the Boat.

Stringer was expected to face longtime veteran Lew Polley at August’s World Series of Fighting 4 event, but Polley missed weight by more than 30 pounds and was ruled out of the fight.

The Blackzilians-trained Stringer has lost just once in his past 13 appearances. Seventeen of his 21 career wins have come by way of stoppage.

Meanwhile, “Robo” Robichaux is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and 14-year MMA veteran with extensive experience in both the professional and amateur ranks. Seventeen of his 19 total career wins have come by way of submission, including 15 first-round tapouts.

A Special Operations Force RECON Marine who also worked with the U.S. Federal Air Marshal Service, Robichaux is also a veteran of several tours of duty in Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, the undefeated Yates also makes his first World Series of Fighting appearance. A member of MMA legend Wanderlei Silva’s famed Wand Fight Team, Yates turned pro in 2011 following an extensive amateur career of more than 25 fights. The 24-year-old has defeated all seven of his professional opponents, including four wins by way of submission and one by knockout.

Additional World Series of Fighting 6 bouts will be announced shortly.

Marcelo Alfaya vs. Jon Fitch completes four-fight World Series of Fighting 6 main card

A welterweight clash between gritty American Top Team fighter Marcelo “Grilo” Alfaya (15-6) and perennial top-ranked contender Jon Fitch (24-6-1) is the latest addition to the lineup for “World Series of Fighting 6: Burkman vs. Carl.”

The bout completes the four-fight NBCSN-broadcast main card of the Oct. 26 event, which takes place at BankUnited Center in Coral Gables, Fla.

The new pairing joins the night’s headlining matchup of Josh “The People’s Warrior” Burkman (26-9) vs. Steve Carl (20-3), who compete for the first-ever World Series of Fighting welterweight title, a bantamweight co-feature between Carson “Little Juggernaut” Beebe (14-2) and Marlon Moraes (11-4-1), as well as the bout that kicks off the evening’s broadcast, Justin Gaethje (9-0) vs. fellow lightweight Dan “The Upgrade” Lauzon (17-4).

The nationally televised event, which airs live on NBCSN, marks the promotion’s debut in the Sunshine State.

Tickets for the fight card, which start at just $29, are currently on sale at all Ticketmaster locations, Ticketmaster.com and charge-by-phone at (800) 745-3000.

The live, two-hour NBCSN telecast of the World Series of Fighting 6 main card begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT. A full lineup of preliminary bouts will also stream live on World Series of Fighting’s official website, WSOF.com, beginning at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT, and venue doors open at 5 p.m. ET.

“We’re very excited to announce the addition of Marcelo Alfaya vs. Jon Fitch to our Oct. 26 event in Florida,” World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo said. “Jon’s track record in the sport speaks for itself, and Marcelo is an 11-year MMA veteran who has been waiting for an opportunity like this. When you add this fight to the lineup we’ve already announced for the evening, this card has all the potential to be our best night of fights yet.”

A native of Porto Alegre, Brazil, Alfaya now makes his home in Florida, where he trains with the famed American Top Team. “Grilo,” which is Portuguese for “cricket,” is 6-1 in his past seven fights, including his most recent appearance, where he needed just 26 seconds to score a first-round knockout. A well-rounded veteran who has been fighting professionally since 2002, Alfaya owns four career knockout wins and six victories by submission. He now fights for the first time under the World Series of Fighting banner.

Meanwhile, Fitch has long been considered one of the absolute best 170-pound fighters in the sport of MMA. A 35-year-old member of California’s American Kickboxing Academy, Fitch made his World Series of Fighting debut in June and suffered a shocking submission loss to Burkman in a rematch of the pair’s original 2006 meeting, which Fitch won by tapout. Fitch looks to make a statement in his second fight for the promotion in hopes of booking a trilogy bout with Burkman, perhaps even with the World Series of Fighting welterweight title on the line.

ANDREI ARLOVSKI VICTORIOUS OVER MIKE KYLE IN WORLD SERIES OF FIGHTING 5

Heavyweight Andrei “The Pit Bull” Arlovski (20-10) wanted to prove to his doubters that he can still take a punch. He took several of them from a bruising Mike “MAK” Kyle (20-10-1) but picked himself up off the canvas to score an impressive decision win on the main event of Saturday’s World Series of Fighting 5 fight card.

The headlining contest took place at New Jersey’s Revel Atlantic City and aired live on NBCSN. A replay of the show airs on the network Monday, Sept. 16, at 8 p.m. ET.

Arlovski, who stepped in on one month’s notice for an injured Anthony Johnson, was fighting for the first time since having his jaw shattered in a March outing. He wasn’t gun shy in his return, and Arlovski went toe-to-toe with Kyle throughout the 15-minute thriller.

Kyle, who also competes in the 205-pound division, looked incredible from start to finish, and he scored knockdowns in both the first and third rounds. But Arlovski rebounded well each time, and his volume of work in both the first and second frames – landing his own stiff punches and kicking the legs, as well – proved enough to erase his faults, and he was awarded an entertaining decision win, 29-28 on all three cards.

“It was a great fight,” Arlovski said after the win. “He’s a top fighter, and I really appreciate him for this fight.

“I guess I could have followed the gameplan more, but I did what I did. It was a good comeback from my fight March 23.”

In the night’s co-main event, David Branch (13-3) assured he’ll fight for the World Series of Fighting middleweight title with a one-sided decision win over Brazilian veteran Danillo Villefort (14-5) in the middleweight tourney semifinal bout.

While Villefort looked to strike, Branch repeatedly took the fight to the floor and controlled the position with a dominant top game that stifled his foe. While Villefort was strong in defense from his back, he was never able to offer any counter offense, and Branch was awarded all three rounds, claiming the clear decision win.

Branch will now meet an opponent yet to be determined for the inaugural World Series of Fighting 185-pound belt.

“It feels good,” Branch said after the win, his third for the promotion. “This is my destiny. I was the first fight for the WSOF, and I want to be the first middleweight champion.”

Heavyweight Derrick Mehmen earned the biggest win of his career, scoring a second-round knockout over submission ace Rolles Gracie.

Gracie surprised in the opening round, largely forgoing the ground game in favor of boxing with his opponent. The unexpected gameplan worked well early but backfired in the second frame, when Mehmen started to get comfortable in his striking game.

With Gracie retreating in a standup exchange, Mehmen blasted him with a clean right hand to the chin. Gracie was out on his feet, and his body slowly twirled before crashing to the canvas in a highlight likely to be seen for years to come. Mehmen was awarded the knockout win at the 2:40 mark of the second round.

In a bizarre moment rarely seen in combat sports, New Jersey State Athletic Control Board officials called off a middleweight tournament bout between Elvis “The King” Mutapcic (13-2) and Jesse “JT Money” Taylor (26-9) just moments before the two were scheduled to hit the cage.

According the commission, Mutapcic took a prescription pill that had not been cleared for use.

“There were some prescriptions that weren’t given to our doctors during the physicals and that weren’t approved by us, the commission,” a commission official said. “So since we don’t know what they are and what they do, we canceled the fight.

“We can’t take that chance to have that fight go off, so those things need to be looked at, and they need to be talked about. We just feel that we’re not going to have a fight in New Jersey when we don’t know what someone is taking.”

Mutapcic insisted he didn’t take any pills and that the inspector may have mistaken him for his manager, who is currently using medication for a heart condition.

“I really don’t know what happened, what [the inspector] saw,” Mutapcic said. “She might have been taking some medication, herself. I put in a good 10-week training camp. I worked my ass off. I know Taylor’s ready. I’m not sure if she mistaked me for my manager, who has a heart prescription. He was the one that had it. We’re all dressed the same – same T-shirt, same hat. I mean, there’s four of us, and she’s pointing me out, that I took it. I say I’ll take a blood test. I’ll give a hair sample if they need it. I’ve got nothing in my system. I’m completely clean.”

Nevertheless, the decision had already been made.

World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo said both Mutapcic and Taylor would still receive their show money, and the company would look to reschedule the fight as soon as possible, with the winner meeting Branch for the promotion’s first 185-pound belt.

“It is sad to see this happen,” Sefo said. “I’ve been in martial arts for 25 years and have never seen anything like this. Elvis has been training for this fight for 10 weeks, but the commission has made its decision and we have to live with it.”

Competing for the first time under the World Series of Fighting banner, featherweight Georgi Karakhanyan (22-3-1) announced himself as an instant contender in the promotion with an impressive first-round finish of Waylon Lowe (14-5).

The fight, which kicked off the evening’s NBCSN-broadcast main card, saw Karakhanyan set the tone from the opening bell with powerful kicks to the legs and body. As Lowe looked for an opportunity to move inside agains the strikes, he made a costly mistake, leaving his neck exposed on a takedown attempt. Karakhanyan latched on to a guillotine choke and fell to his back, quickly squeezing and earning the tap at the 3:37 mark of the first frame.

“I would’ve like to have showcased my standup more, but if it goes to the ground, I’m always looking for a finish,” Karakhanyan said after the win. “If you step in this cage, I’m going to finish you. I’m a finisher.”

In the night’s featured preliminary bout, Rick “The Gladiator” Glenn (14-2-1) patiently worked through a first-round armbar that seemed sure to end his night to bounce back for a decision win over a previously undefeated Artur “The Arabian Nightmare” Rofi (6-1).

Rofi, who offered up a constant barrage of trash talk before and during the contest, looked as if he’d end the fight with the quick submission attempt, but Glenn patiently waited through the hold and kept his limb safe until the bell. Over the final 10 minutes, Rofi looked as if the intense attempt had sapped his energy, and Glenn peppered him with left hands on the feet.

Rofi moved forward until the final bell, but it was Glenn who was the busier, more accurate fighter, and he was awarded a unanimous decision, 29-28, 29-28 and 29-28. Afterward, Glenn admitted he enjoyed silencing his outspoken foe.

“It’s the best,” Glenn said. “When someone talks smack to you like that, and they’re disrespectful, I just try to stay humble. I’m glad I won.”

New Jersey’s own Jimmie “El Terror” Rivera survived an incredible opening-round barrage from opponent Sidemar “Sideco” Honorio to battle back for an incredible unanimous-decision win.

A pinpoint counter hook sent Rivera crashing to the floor in the first, and Honorio rushed to mount and looked to finish the fight with punches. But a courageous Rivera somehow survived the assault and escaped the position.

Once back on his feet, Rivera turned up the volume and pressed the action as a stunned Honorio fought on in disbelief. The two entertained until the final bell, but Rivera’s workload swayed the judges, and he was awarded a unanimous-decision win with scores of 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28.

“It’s about pushing the pace,” Rivera said after the fight. “That’s what I do every fight, and that’s what I’m going to keep doing, non-stop.

“I don’t give up until I’m out or the referee is jumping in. I keep going to the fight. That’s what’s always going on in my head.”

With a 12-fight win streak, Rivera may very well soon see himself vying for a World Series of Fighting title.

In welterweight action, Rich Patishnock (6-1) became joined a small fraternity of fighters who have defeated multiple members of MMA’s First Family by scoring an impressive decision win over Gregor Gracie (7-4).

It was Gracie who took the fight to the floor early, but Patishnock crawled back to his feet and punished his opponent on the feet. Gracie stood firm in the pocket and traded blows, but it was the constant pressure of Patishnock that saw him through to a unanimous-decision win, with scores of 30-27, 29-28and 29-28.

Afterward, Patishnock admitted he wasn’t sure if he had executed well enough in his sprawl-and-brawl approach but was happy to get the result.

“That was my strategy,” Patishnock said. “I really didn’t think I did that well with my strategy, but that was my strategy, and I’m glad everybody thought I did it.”

Ozzy Dugulubgov (5-1) improved to 2-0 under the World Series of Fighting banner with an impressive submission win over Andrew “Ozzy” Osbourne (7-6).

The action started on the feet, with both fighters trading thunderous kicks at various levels. But in the second, Dugulubgov caught one of those kicks and dropped his foe with a straight left counter. From there, Dugulubgov pounced on his opponent and dropped back to attack the leg, securing an Achilles lock that earned a tap 72 seconds into the second round.

“Victory comes only from God,” Dugulubgov said after the win. “If you truly believe, your thoughts become your actions. I wanted to show my standup, try a little bit of new things here and there, but I knew if the fight went to the ground, I have much more opportunity there. When it went down, I saw [the submission] was there, and with confidence, I just went for it. Thank God it worked.”

In the night’s first contest, debuting middleweight Neiman Gracie (1-0) proved victorious in his first appearance as a professional, scoring a first-round submission win over Darren Costa (0-2).

It was Costa who scored with his hands early, but submission ace Gracie clinched up, brought the fight to the floor and rolled quickly into an armbar, forcing the tap at the 3:57 mark of the first round.

“I’m very happy to be here,” the 24-year-old Gracie said after the win. “This is a dream. Since I was a kid, I always wanted to fight, and finally I’m here.”

BJ PENN AND FRANKIE EDGAR SIGN ON AS COACHES OF THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER®; SET SIGHTS ON TRILOGY MATCH-UP

Las Vegas, Nevada – Faced with the challenge of outdoing its current historic, adrenaline-charged season of The Ultimate Fighter®, the Ultimate Fighting Championship® (UFC®) today confirmed that the next season of its long-running reality series will feature former champions “The Prodigy” BJ Penn and Frankie “The Answer” Edgar as coaches. The storied foes will coach a cast of middleweight (185 lbs.) and light heavyweight (205 lbs.) fighters in their quest to win the title of Ultimate Fighter and a six-figure contract with the UFC.

“BJ Penn is moving down to 145 lbs. to coach The Ultimate Fighter against Frankie Edgar,” said UFC President Dana White. “BJ really hates the fact that he lost to Frankie Edgar. It’s something that’s been burning deep inside of him for three years now. So he’s moving down to 145 lbs. to not only avenge those defeats, but to try and become the first fighter in UFC history to win titles in three different weight classes.”

Widely considered one of the greatest fighters in UFC history, Penn (16-9-2 in MMA) is one of only two men to win UFC world titles in two separate divisions. The former welterweight and lightweight champion has defeated a Who’s Who of MMA, including UFC champions Matt Hughes, Matt Serra and Sean Sherk. His reign over the UFC’s 155lbs. division was ended in 2010’s Upset of the Year, when he was outpointed by Frankie Edgar. “The Prodigy” not only returns to the UFC but also The Ultimate Fighter, after coaching season five back in 2007.

After defeating Penn in two fights, Edgar (15-4-1) established a reputation for lightweight excellence. “The Answer” defended the lightweight championship in a pair of all-time classic battles with Gray Maynard before losing the title on a controversial decision to Benson Henderson. Edgar then dropped to featherweight, where many believe he will join Penn as a two-division world champion.

The series begins filming in mid-October in Las Vegas.

Catch all new episodes of this season of The Ultimate Fighter: Team Rousey vs. Team Tate, Wednesday’s at 10 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1.

The other participants of the call included middleweight tournament contenders David Branch (12-3) who takes on Danillo “Indio” Villefort (14-4) and Elvis “The King” Mutapcic (13-2) who will be fighting Jesse “JT Money” Taylor, as well as a heavyweights Rolles Gracie (8-1) and his opponent Derrick “Caveman” Mehmen (15-5) and featherweights Georgi Karakhanyan (21-3-1) who will battle Waylon Lowe (14-4), who was unable to attend the call.

The prelims feature an additional 5 bouts, which also include matchups between Gregor Gracie (7-3) vs. Rich Patishnock (5-1) and Neiman Gracie (0-0) vs. Darren Costa (0-1) streams on World Series of Fighting’s official website, WSOF.com, beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT.

Tickets for World Series of Fighting 5 start at $29 and are currently on sale at all Ticketmaster locations, Ticketmaster.com and charge-by-phone at (800) 745-3000.

The following are fighter highlights from the conference call:

ANDREI ARLOVSKI
It’s going to be an interesting match for myself and my fans and I’m looking forward to fighting this Saturday.

I’m very excited about this fight, I’ve been training hard even during the 6-8 weeks when my jaw was wired. During that time I did a lot of cardio stuff and a lot of technique stuff and I’m really excited about Mike. I think he’s a good match for me.

Mike Kyle has a big mouth. He said he’s going to knock me out.

MIKE KYLE
This is one of my biggest opportunities. I feel great. I’m coming off a great win, a knockout over Travis Wiuff. … I’m starting to feel comfortable in the ring again, and I’m really excited to go out there and perform and put on the show that I’m capable of doing.

(You were originally expected to face Anthony Johnson. Is that a fight you still want?)

I like that fight, definitely. I don’t think there are too many fights I’m not interested in. But yeah, I’d definitely love to fight Anthony Johnson. I’d love to fight Tyrone Sponge. I like those guys. They’re good, straight strikers, and it makes for a good fight. I’m sure the fans would love to see that fight. But as of now, all I’m trying to think about is Arlovski. I don’t want to look past him. He’s a very tough opponent. He’s known to knock people out, and he’s coming from a great camp, as well, with Greg Jackson, so I’m looking forward to this fight, and I’m trying to look past this fight.

(How do you plan on avoiding his power?)

I plan on having better footwork, and I plan on hitting him first.

JESSE TAYLOR
(What does it feel like to be a part of World Series of Fighting?)

It’s really awesome. I’ve been traveling all over the world, and it’s been real cool seeing new places and fighting all sorts of people. But it’s real nice to have a home. It’s a reputable organization, the WSOF. I’m back in the States and can get some good exposure, where I can show my skills off. I’m just really excited to be back in a good, big show.

(Would you consider a possible move back down to welterweight at some point?)

I really got comfortable back at middleweight. I kind of grew a little bit, too, so I think middleweight is a good weight for me. But I’m all about big fights, and I have thought about there are definitely some big names down at welterweight that I would love to get my hands on. But I’ve just got to take care of business first. I can’t look past Elvis. He’s a really tough and game opponent, so I’m just really concentrated on him, and then we’ll see what happens after that fight and with the whole tournament. We’ll see what happens down the road.

ELVIS MUTAPCIC
(What’s the transition like from Canada to the World Series of Fighting?)

I think to keep me motivated, I’ve got to keep stepping up the competition. I keep fighting guys that are better than the previous guys I fought, so that keeps me motivated. Two, I’m really glad to be back in a cage. I thought I’d like the ring, but the ring has proven not to work for me. World Series is a great sport for up-and-coming fighters, and I just feel they’ve got a lot of hungry guys. They’re going to great in their careers there, and I’m just glad to be a part of it.

I’m trying to make a living in this. I’m not trying to do this as a hobby. A belt is nice, but I’m getting an opportunity to get a different, better belt.

DAVID BRANCH
(Should you be considered the tournament favorite?)

I don’t think I should be given any favoritism. All of the guys in the tournament are proven fighters. They’re veterans. They’ve been around the block. We’ve just got to get in there and get it done. That’s it. I don’t like to have any favoritism. I was on the first fight in the WSOF, and I definitely want to be the first champ of the middleweight division, but at the same time, I’ve got some tough opposition against me, and I’ve been getting ready for it properly. We’ll just get it done.

DANILLO VILLEFORT
(When facing another Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, are you interested in proving your submission skills or just picking up a win?)

Every fight is a different fight. David Branch, he comes from a very great gym. Renzo Gracie is a great coach and a great professional. But my family has been in the business since 1957. My whole entire family has been fighting, and I believe in my pedigree. I have no fear to go to the ground with my opponent. I’m not saying I’m going to tap or finish him, but wherever he takes it, I’m ready. I like to fight not just on the ground. I like to strike, too, so let’s see what game he wants to do. I’ll be ready for it.

ROLLES GRACIE
(How do you feel ahead of the fight?)

I’m feeling great for this fight. Derrick is definitely a tough opponent. I can’t take him lightly. I’m really looking forward to this fight. I don’t know what’s going to happen in the fight. I can say, ‘I wish this,’ or, ‘I wish that,’ but it’s only once you step in the cage that you know what’s going to happen. So I’m ready to do whatever it takes. Whatever it comes down to in the cage, I’m ready and prepared for it. I feel a lot more experienced and a lot more ready for it.

(This is a special night for the Gracie family. What does it mean for you all to still be featured so prominently?)

We are very excited to be a part of this. We’re really thankful to World Series of Fighting for making such an event and making this opportunity happen for all of us. It was great to not only have my brother and my cousin on the card but David Branch and my other teammates on the card. We all trained together. We got to improve together. We got to push each other forward and make ourselves better. It was an amazing, amazing training camp for all of us, and I’m really looking forward to Saturday night.

DERRICK MEHMEN
(You’re the underdog here, so are you hoping to shock the world?)

I guess you could say that. I fee like he has a lot of expectations on him. Maybe that gives him a little extra pressure. I have no expectations on me, but I feel it’s a great matchup for me, a great fight.

(Why did you move back to heavyweight? Is this switch permanent?)

It’s a permanent switch. I had been thinking about it before Strikeforce really, moving to heavyweight. This seemed like a great opportunity to move to heavyweight right now.

GEORGI KARAKHANYAN
As a fighter, it’s very important because fighting is how I feed myself and my family. It’s great to have a home like World Series of Fighting. A couple of organizations opened up their eyes and wanted to sign me. I don’t want to talk about the rest of the organizations, but I’m just happy that I finally landed somewhere where I can get to compete.

He has a powerful left hand. I’m not going to go in there and underestimate him and think he’s going to just wrestle me. I’m going to go in there prepared no matter what he’s going to want to do to me if it’s wrestling or it’s standup. I prefer to keep the fight standing and kick the shit out of him and throw a couple of knees, but if he tries to outwrestle me, then I’ll break my wrestling out and grind out a decision win over him.

World Series of Fighting 6 set for October 26 at Florida’s BankUnited Center

World Series of Fighting travels to Florida for the first time, as Coral Gables’ BankUnited Center plays host to “World Series of Fighting 6: Burkman vs. Carl” on Oct. 26.

In the night’s NBCSN-televised main event, resurgent veteran Josh “The People’s Warrior” Burkman (26-9) meets Steve Carl (20-3) with the inaugural World Series of Fighting welterweight title on the line.

In the evening’s co-feature, Carson “Little Juggernaut” Beebe (14-2) and Marlon Moraes (11-4-1) clash in a bantamweight matchup that could lead to a future title shot for the winner.

And in a featured lightweight matchup, undefeated prospect Justin Gaethje (9-0) faces Dan “The Upgrade” Lauzon (17-4).

The nationally televised event, which airs live on NBCSN, marks the promotion’s debut in the Sunshine State.

Tickets for the fight card, which start at just $29, go on sale this Friday, Sept. 6, at all Ticketmaster locations, Ticketmaster.com and charge-by-phone at (800) 745-3000.

The live, two-hour NBCSN telecast of the World Series of Fighting 6 main card begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT. A full lineup of preliminary bouts will also stream live on World Series of Fighting’s official website, WSOF.com beginning at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT and venue doors open at 5 p.m. ET.

“We’ve been looking forward to making our debut in Florida for some time now, and I’m proud to say we will be in Coral Gables on Oct. 26,” World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo said. “Our headliner will see us award either Josh Burkman or Steve Carl the first championship belt in our promotion’s history, and I think that matchup will be something special. The whole lineup we’re planning will be fantastic, and I look forward to making more announcements very soon.”

Burkman is a 10-time UFC veteran who first entered the spotlight in 2005 as a cast member on “The Ultimate Fighter 2.” Injuries briefly slowed the Utah native’s career, but since 2009 Burkman is 8-1 in nine appearances, a run that includes three wins while competing for World Series of Fighting. Most recently, Burkman registered the biggest win of his career to date by earning a technical submission win over Jon Fitch in just 41 seconds.

Meanwhile, Carl is a military veteran whose fighting career was born in the Modern Army Combatives Program. An Iowa native, the 28-year-old began his professional career in 2005 and has already registered 20 career victories, including an incredible 15 wins by submission. Carl has already competed twice under the World Series of Fighting banner, registering a pair of first-round submission wins over Tyson Steele and Ramico Blackmon, and he brings a six-fight win streak to the contest.

Illinois-native Beebe, the brother of former WEC bantamweight champion Chase Beebe, has built an impressive 9-1 mark in his past 10 appearances. Most recently, the wrestling specialist earned a hard-fought decision win over Joe Murphy at June’s World Series of Fighting 3 event.
He now meets three-time World Series of Fighting veteran Moraes, who has used his time in the organization to catapult up the world rankings, working from relative obscurity to top-10 status in rapid fashion. A 25-year-old Brazilian with devastating striking and impressive grappling skills, Moraes has already downed Miguel Torres, Tyson Nam and Brandon Hempleman in previous World Series of Fighting appearances.

The 24-year-old Gaethje is a member of Colorado’s Grudge Training Center and has looked absolutely spectacular in a pair of World Series of Fighting wins over veterans Brian Cobb and Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante. Competing professionally since August 2011, Gaethje has fought to a decision just once, earning seven knockouts and one submission in nine appearances.

Meanwhile, Lauzon made his World Series of Fighting debut in June and dominated 50-fight veteran John Gunderson en route to a unanimous-decision win. The 25-year-old Lauzon, brother of UFC lightweight standout Joe Lauzon, currently boasts a five-fight win streak.

“We are thrilled to bring World Series of Fighting to Coral Gables,” said Global Spectrum’s Lorenzo Muniz, General Manager at the BankUnited Center. “Our venue is the perfect setting for mixed martial arts, and we are excited to showcase these world-class fighters here at the BankUnited Center.”

Additional bouts will be announced shortly.

Harrison Bevens vs. Justin Harrington for the CageSport Lightweight Title

Tacoma, WA (September 3rd, 2013) – After dominating performances at Halquist Productions’ CageSport XXVI last Saturday, Lacey’s Harrison Bevens (6-1) and Enumclaw’s Justin Harrington (5-0) will headline CageSport XXVII when they take each other on in an electrifying five round lightweight title match. In the featured fight of the night, StrikeForce veteran, Cory Devela (8-5), will touch gloves with Everett’s Byron Sutton (7-3) in a three round war between two premier northwest middleweights.

Tickets for CageSport XXVII, set for Saturday, October 5th, at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, WA are available and can be purchased at the Emerald Queen Casino box office or online through Ticketmaster.

Fans were pleased last Saturday, when promoter, Brian Halquist, immediately before the main event, stepped into the cage with Harrington and Bevens who were both coming off stellar victories in the undercard portion of the show. In the cage, Halquist announced to the fans in attendance that Harrington and Bevens would be meeting up in the main event of CageSport XXVII to fight for the promotion’s vacant lightweight title. Right then and there, the two fighters happily signed the contract and made the fight official.

After telling MMA Weekly last week that he wanted to fight someone in the top 10 of Washington by year’s end to figure out what kind of fighter he’s turning into, Justin Harrington is getting just that.

“I’m just really happy to be fighting for a title,” said Harrington, who trains out of former UFC fighter, Jeff Hougland’s, Combat Sport and Fitness gym. “It’s going to be the toughest fight I have ever had, but that’s what excites me. I’m going to let it all go for 25 minutes, because who knows when I’ll ever get this chance again.”

Bevens, who is coming off a knockout of the year performance where he dropped Dave Shepherd (5-4) with a devastating right hook, will look for that same glory when he steps into the cage on October 5th. Training out of the prominent Academy of Brian Johnson gym in Lacey, Bevens is taking the next step in what has been a very successful start to his professional MMA career.

StrikeForce veteran, Cory Devela, who trains with former UFC fighter, Dennis Hallman, out of his Victory Athletics gym in Lakewood, will look to get his career back on track when he takes on Bulldog MMA’s Byron Sutton in the featured fight of the night. After starting his career off with an 8-2 record including a win in his StrikeForce debut at the Tacoma Dome, he has since dropped three straight; his last being a heart breaking split decision loss to current UFC fighter, Bobby Voelker.

The undercard for CageSport XXVII will soon be available for viewing at the official Facebook page of CageSport MMA and will be updated as card changes are made official.

Doors for CageSport XXVII will open at 6 PM with the first fight schedule for 7 PM. Since CageSport’s debut show in 2008, promoter, Brian Halquist has turned CageSport into the premier mixed martial arts event in the Northwest featuring the first and best all pro show in the region. Fighters such as: Bryan Caraway, Miesha Tate, Sam Sicilia, and Michael Chiesa, have all fought on previous CageSport cards and are now currently fighting for the UFC. Halquist Productions prides itself in giving the fighters on its shows the exposure they deserve giving them the opportunities to unleash their full potential.
