STRIKEFORCE® ANNOUNCES CANCELLATION OF SATURDAY’S EVENT IN SACRAMENTO

Las Vegas, Nevada – STRIKEFORCE® announced this evening that its event planned for Saturday, Sept. 29 at Power Balance Pavilion in Sacramento, Calif. has been cancelled. STRIKEFORCE lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez, who was set to defend his title against Pat Healy, sustained an injury in training that forced his withdrawal from the card.

Without the Melendez-Healy title bout, SHOWTIME®, which determines which fights are televised on the premium network, decided that it would not air Saturday’s scheduled event.

“When SHOWTIME informed us that it would not be airing the event, we made the difficult decision to cancel Saturday’s card in Sacramento,” STRIKEFORCE CEO Scott Coker said. “Without a television partner, we simply could not move forward with this event. We wish Gilbert a speedy recovery and will work diligently and quickly to reschedule the fighters affected by this news on upcoming cards.”

Refunds for tickets purchased are available at point of sale.

Heavyweight KO Artist Brett Rogers Preparing For Bellator Tournament Debut At American Top Team

COCONUT CREEK, FLA. (Sept. 24, 2012) –Looking to build on his recent second-round TKO victory, heavy-handed KO artist Brett “Da Grim” Rogers (12-4) of St. Paul, Minn. has joined premiere Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) training camp American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Fla. in preparation for his first Bellator Fighting Championships heavyweight tournament matchup in Hammond, Ind. on Oct. 5, live on MTV2.

The 31-year-old, 6-foot-5, 265 pound Rogers will face an opponent to be announced at Horseshoe Casino in the quarterfinal round of Bellator’s seventh season tournament, the winner of which will have earned a total of $100,000 in prize money.

“I’ve found a new home here at American Top Team and owe a lot of thanks to them. Coming here has changed my outlook on my career and life, in general, and I’m going to show the world that,” said Rogers, who stopped rival Kevin Asplund in a Bellator matchup on June 22. “When I get in the cage on Oct. 5, people are going to see a different Brett Rogers – better skilled and more confident than ever.

“Brett has demonstrated a sincere re-commitment to his career and to becoming a more well-versed fighter,” said American Top Team Head Trainer and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, Ricardo Liborio, who has been working hand-in-hand with Rogers. “I always thought Brett could be one of the most dangerous heavyweights in MMA because of his raw strength and punching power, but that he was also lacking the ground fighting skills necessary to succeed at the highest level of the sport. That’s all changing now and, come next month, people will start seeing that.”

Rogers, a former tire technician for Sam’s Club, became a Cinderella story after bursting onto the professional MMA scene in 2005 and blasting through his first nine opponents with furious displays of striking. Amongst Rogers’ early conquests was a brutal, first round KO (1:00) of Jon Murphy during the first-ever live, CBS primetime telecast of an MMA event.

His outstanding, initial success earned Rogers a shot at UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei “The Pitbull” Arlovski at Strikeforce on June 6, 2009. Before a live SHOWTIME television audience, Rogers shocked the world, crumbling the far-more experienced Arlovski in just 22 seconds with a barrage of punches against the cage.

The stunning upset victory set Rogers up for a live, CBS primetime televised showdown with Russia’s Fedor Emelianenko, widely recognized as the greatest MMA fighter of all-time, in the main event of a Strikeforce and M-1 Global co-promoted fight card at Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill. on Nov. 7, 2009.

Before 5.4 million live TV viewers, Rogers nearly pulled off one of the greatest upsets in MMA history, opening a cut on Emelianenko in the opening seconds of the first round of their main event matchup and pushing Emelianenko to his limits. In the second round, however, Emelianenko suddenly turned things around in dramatic fashion, putting Rogers on the canvas with an overhand right that set the Russian up for a TKO victory.

Of his recent comeback and signing with Bellator, Rogers credits his new management and training team for helping him turn his fortunes around.

“A few people stuck by me when the chips were down and helped me get through a terrible period in my life,” said Rogers. “It’s because of their support that I have a second chance to shine and become something great.”

INVICTA FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIPS FORMS STRATEGIC ALLIANCE WITH SUPER FIGHT LEAGUE TO DEVELOP WOMEN’S MMA TALENT OUT OF INDIA

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (Sept. 24, 2012) –Invicta Fighting Championships and India-based Super Fight League announced today that the two Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) promotions have formed a strategic alliance to develop women’s MMA talent out of India.

The relationship is intended to support Invicta FC’s goals of identifying the best women’s fight talent around the globe and producing the best possible matchups between women’s mixed martial artists while, at the same time, providing Super Fight League with a means of promoting MMA to a broader demographic in its homeland.

“We are excited about this opportunity to work with Super Fight League and tap into a new market that has yet to really be explored by the women’s MMA world,” said Invicta FC President Shannon Knapp. “Super Fight League has done a great job of pioneering the sport of MMA in India and has helped demonstrate that there is fight talent everywhere on the planet. Even though women’s MMA has made tremendous strides over the last few years as far as adding depth to its ranks, we have really just scratched the surface of what is out there. This relationship between Invicta FC and Super Fight League is an opportunity to expand our reach and discover exciting, new talent.

“Super Fight League is thrilled to form a cooperative relationship with an MMA promotion in The United States,” said Super Fight League Chairman Raj Kundra. “Invicta FC has done some incredible things for women’s MMA in such a short time and I am confident that working with their great organization is a step that will helpfurther the MMA movement in India that we initiated this year with our live event series.”

In June, Invicta FC announced the formation of a similar strategic partnership with Japan-based women’s MMA promotion JEWELS. The main card of the last Invicta FC event on July 28 featured two JEWELS champions – Ayaka Hamasaki and Hitomi “Girlfight Monster” Akano.

As of its next event on Saturday, Oct. 6, Invicta FC will have promoted matchups with fighters from seven other countries – Ireland, Scotland, Brazil, Canada, Sweden, Netherlands and France – in addition to The United States and Japan.

Tickets for Invicta FC 3: Penne vs. Sugiyama at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, are on sale at Memorial Hall box office (913-549-4853), online at Ticketmaster.com and InvictaFC.com and by phone at (800-745-3000). The 13-bout professional card will be headlined by the promotion’s first-ever world championship bout, an atomweight (105 pound) showdown between superstars Jessica Penne (9-1) of Laguna Hills, Calif. and undefeated Naho “Sugi Rock” Sugiyama (8-0) of Kyoto, Japan.

EPISODE TWO: “WHAT WE DO” FLASH QUOTES

Las Vegas, Nevada – The Ultimate Fighter® Fridays episode two – “What We Do” – aired on FX on Friday evening and saw Team Carwin win the inaugural fight of the competition, as Neil Magny claimed a unanimous decision victory over Las Vegas native Cameron Diffley.

Magny said: “Winning was a big relief. To be able to get that first fight out of the way and enjoy the house felt good. The pressure was off and I actually got a good night’s sleep. I think the fight went well. I did a good job keeping the fight standing. I didn’t allow him to work his game and it worked out pretty good for me.”

The eliminated Diffley said: “I kept coming forward and attacking and was really trying to win the whole time. But I think this fight brought out some of the holes in my MMA game and some things for me to work hard and improve on to be a better fighter in my next fight. It was little depressing when I got back to the house after my loss, it took a little of the energy out of my team. But we knew we had to moved forward and get right back into the competition.”

THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER® FRIDAYS FLASH QUOTES

Las Vegas, Nevada (Sept. 20, 2012) – Have you ever wondered what life was like in The Ultimate Fighter® house? Wondered what it’s like to be one of 16 guys, with no contact with the outside world, sleeping in twin beds, training twice daily and competing with your housemates to reach the same dream? Well, we followed up with the cast of The Ultimate Fighter® Fridays, which airs Friday nights at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX, to get their thoughts on life in the TUF™ house after week one. Here’s what they had to say:

TEAM CARWIN

Sam Alvey (@Smilensam)

“Week one of the TUF house was a lot like when Luke first met Yoda; excited to learn but really looking past that to becoming the TUF Fridays champ.”

Bristol Marunde (@bristolmarunde)

“I went from owning my own business, a big house, a king size bed to a bunk-bed and a house full of crazy fighters. I’m back in college!!!!”

Mike Ricci (@MikeyRicci)

“The first week was ‘tuf’ adjusting to the new location and schedule but things got easier from then on.”

Neil Magny (@neilmagny)

“The first week living in the TUF house was great. I was so happy that I was able to make it this far, after being turned away so many times before. Making it into the house was the biggest accomplishment I had in my MMA career yet. I also thought the house was amazing. For the first time in my life I had a hot tub/pool in my backyard and everything I could possibly want in the kitchen.”

James Chaney (@jameschaneymma)

“When initially going into the TUF house everybody was overjoyed. Flying high on our fresh victories, it was a rush picking the beds and raiding the massive fridge and pantry, the reality setting in that we had really made it, we were really there! The house itself was so massive! I constantly found myself discovering bizarre new things: Greek statues, koi ponds, samurai statues, and all sorts of bizarre locked rooms. I’m reasonably sure somewhere within that property is a path to Narnia or Hogwarts or something. For most, the joy of victory and the luster of the house was dulled within the week as fight picks loomed and the seriousness of our circumstances was realized.”

Eddy Ellis (@fasteddyellis)

“My feelings about the first week of The Ultimate Fighter house were mixed, the first part of the week I was just excited to be there. By the end of the first week I thought WHAT DID I GET MYSELF IN TO? Five and half more weeks in that place was a LONG-time away!”

Igor Araujo (@igoraraujojj)

“The war has started, amazing room, amazing house, 15 more crazy guys who want to see my head on the ground. I am sleeping in the same room as James Chaney and Julian Lane, will I survive in this adventure?”

Matt Secor (@secormatthew)

“I figured I wasn’t going to make any friends in the house and stay to myself, until our first Team Carwin practice. Then I knew I was going to be on a team that would stick together throughout the whole season.”

TEAM NELSON

Dom Waters (@shonuff89)

“My first week in the TUF house I felt like I was on cloud nine it was just the highest of highs to be walking around that house, just wow.”

Michael Hill (@mmamike)

“I made it, I’m finally here, and now it’s time to get to work. Mooooortal Kooooombat!!! This house is huge, bed’s are very unpleasant, is this jail? I could get used to this grocery list thing, might start using this back home. Cameras are even in the washroom??? Holy shit this is going to be serious.”

Cameron Diffley (@camerondiffley)

“The first week was pretty tame in the house compared to the rest of the season. Everyone was getting to know each other, getting used to their teams training schedule and getting used to living in the TUF house.”

Colton Smith (@coltonsmithmma)

“Being Active Duty Army for the past seven years has ingrained my mind into a certain schedule and habit. That was all shook up when I was put in the TUF house and that was the first of many obstacles I had to overcome being in the house with 15 other warriors.”

Jon Manley (@jonmanleymma)

“The first week in the house seemed crazy. We had to win a fight to get in the house. Pick teams, train and then we were right back into fighting. It was a high stress situation, not knowing who or when you are going to fight. The house was sick and plenty of free food.”

Nic Herron-Webb (@NaptimeNic)

“It was such a crazy experience. I’m stuck in a house with 15 other guys that I don’t know, and we are all out for the same thing. There is bound to be heartbreak, and lots of trouble. Bring it on!!”

Joey Rivera (@joeyboomboom)

“The first week at the house was tough being away from my friends and family, but I had fun meeting the guys and ‘experiencing’ all the different personalities. I knew then it was going to be a wild six weeks.”

Julian Lane (@julianlanemma)

“I really didn’t know what to think, but just go with it. I was ecstatic by the mansion, and knowing I had to live there for six weeks with 15 other fighters made my adrenaline pumped. All I could think about was how crazy everyone will be after the first week when we all get comfortable.”

The series resumes Friday, September 21, on FX at 10 p.m. ET/PT (check local listings for Central and Mountain Time) with the second episode of its 12-week run.

UFC® 152 FLASH QUOTES

Vegas, Nevada – The Ultimate Fighting Championship® organization returns to Toronto this Saturday with a stacked card featuring two world title fights.

At an open workout today, here’s what the top four fighters on the card told the Canadian and travelling press:

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones said: “Vitor Belfort is a UFC original, a real, true legend. He has so much experience at so many different weight classes and I cannot underestimate him. He will have something planned for me, and I’ve prepared to react to anything he does.

“He’s a very powerful striker, but in this situation, I feel I am the more versatile striker in the fight. I won’t shy away from a striking battle just because he has a punch. He’s got a unique style and I enjoy matching up against guys like that. There are so many styles in MMA and, being the champion, you have to face all of them.

“In no way have I ‘cleared out’ the division. Everyone’s style is a puzzle for me, and who knows which style I will have the most trouble with. I’m about to fight my fifth straight UFC champion – which I was told is a UFC record – and I’m very proud of fighting the best guy available in each of my fights. That’s how you build a legacy in a sport.”

Vitor Belfort, challenger, said: “Everyday, I have the chance to be the best of myself. Every day I have a day to improve. I know I can win this fight and shock the world. I can bring the old guys some pride back (laughs).

“I am so ready in my mind, it is hard for me to explain. I am so ready to be the champion again. My brain, my body, they are so ready. That’s how I live my life, with belief. I am a winner. I am ready to win. As you get older you learn about yourself. I have the same abilities as I had when I was younger, but now I have more sense of myself. I know how I respond and learn. Whenever someone says something like ‘Can you speak French?’ I don’t say “no” I say “Not yet”.

“Against Jon Jones people ask ‘how can you beat this guy?’ and I say ‘I will show you how on Saturday’.”

Moving to the second UFC world title fight at UFC 152, the clash for the newly created UFC flyweight title, Joseph Benavidez said:

“The main goal in my career is to be the UFC champion. I would take that however it comes – but to be the first UFC champion is extra special. If I wasn’t a fighter, and I was just a fan, I would be a fan of DJ. He’s got a great all-action style and I love watching him. My coaches have broken his style down and we got a plan to beat him. My eye is on the prize but I am planning a long reign.

“It was frustrating to wait since February for this fight because DJ had a draw against (Ian) McCall but it was just extra time to get better. Most fighters train when they are fighting, I train to get better all the time. You get better as a fighter when you don’t have a fight but you in the gym – and you’ll see the best version of me yet on Saturday.”

And Demetrious Johnson added: “I first walked into Matt Hume’s gym after seeing Rashad Evans on the Ultimate Fighter (season two, 2006) and I said ‘I saw this guy who is a wrestler, like me, doing well, and I think I want to try it’. I had no idea I was too small for the smallest UFC division back then, but as they kept adding more and more smaller classes I started to believe I would fight at 125lbs in the UFC.

“This is where I belong. This is where I can perform to the best of my abilities. I want to be remembered as the George Washington of the 125lbs division, the first, the guy who was first in line and everyone else followed. All the hard work is worth that piece of the history books.”

UFC® 152: JONES vs. BELFORT, presented by Assassin’s Creed III – Igniting the Revolution on October 30th – will be available live on Pay-Per-View at 10 p.m. EST/7 p.m. PST on UFC.TV, iN DEMAND, DirecTV, DISH Network, Avail-TVN, and in Canada on Shaw Communications, Bell TV, Sasktel and Viewer’s Choice Canada for a suggested retail price of $44.99 US/$49.99 CAN for Standard Definition and $54.99 US/$59.99 CAN for High Definition.

Tacoma, WA (September 14, 2012) – Fight fans will receive a special treat when Halquist Productions’ “CageSport XXI” takes over the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, WA with an unprecedented three feature bouts Saturday, September 29.

For the first time ever, CageSport airs on ROOT SPORTS. Additionally, the broadcast crew is comprised of world famous personality Danny Bonaduce, former UFC announcer Jeff Osborne and two-time fighter of the year Miesha “Cupcake” Tate.

Lightweight Brandon Dudley of North Bend, WA risks his perfect 4-0 record against Springfield, OR resident Emmanuel Sanchez in a three round contest.

Unbeaten in both the pros and as an amateur, Dudley’s forced most of his foes to tap out in the opening round. He’s yet to find himself in any serious danger since entering the octagon and is creating a major buzz amongst MMA fans, who’ve expressed their eagerness to see him fight again.

A winner in his last two bouts, most recently scoring a second round submission over Travis Jackson, Sanchez believes that he’ll be the one to end the hype behind his highly-touted opponent.

Four-time amateur champion Brent “Mankill” Knopp is scheduled to face Brandon Pitts over three rounds in the middleweight division.

The fighting pride of Burien, WA, Knopp’s built a reputation as one of the most explosive strikers in the sport. On July 14, Knopp stopped Darrio Mobley on the “CageSport XX” card.

A natural light heavyweight, Pitts is moving down a division for the biggest challenge of his career. Fresh off a first round TKO on August 4, Pitts plans to use his size and momentum to bring home a victory to Portland, OR. Pitt is trained by 2000 Olympic Greco-Roman Wrestling Silver Medalist Matt Linland out of the world famous Team Quest Gym. The gym was started by Linland along with UFC legends Randy Couture and Dan Henderson.

In featured undercard bouts, rising star and Yakima, WA native Julian Erosa risks his unbeaten record against Bend, OR based chokehold master Jason Gybles. Erosa, who forced most of his opponents to tapout, faces the fellow submission artist in a three round lightweight contest.

Featherweight standouts Jacob Boysen and Ryan Mulvihill will meet in a three rounder for Northwest region supremacy.

At 3-0, Boysen most recently stopped Rob Dyer in the opening round. The Seattle, WA sensation has looked fantastic thus far but is taking a major step up in competition.

Mulvihill, of Spokane, WA fought on six “CageSport” cards, providing the fans with quality bouts each time out. Earlier this year, he took the aforementioned Erosa four rounds before losing by submission. A winner in four of his last six, Mulvihill is faced with yet another tough opponent on the 29th.

“This is going to be a night everybody involved will remember,” said promoter Brian Halquist. “The CageSport brand has grown so much over the years and with the ROOT SPORTS broadcast, things will go to a whole new level. I’m beyond excited for everything that will unfold come September 29!”

Six additional three round undercard matches will take place featuring local standouts Dave Courchaine, Matt Kovacks, Chris Wheaton, Jose Rico, Andy Paves and Damen Wood.

Tickets are available to the ten bout fight card on ticketmaster.com or by going to the Emerald Queen box office. For more information and the latest updates, go to Halquistproductions.com or http://www.facebook.com/pages/CageSport-MMA/188915101800

Silva steps in to save UFC 153, will face Bonnar at light heavy!

UFC middleweight kingpin and pound-for-pound best, Anderson Silva, will headline UFC 153 against long time veteran Stephan Bonnar in Riode Janeiro, Brazil on October 13th according to USA Today.

Bonnar (14-7), currently riding on a three fight win streak, is well known for his epic battle against Forrest Griffin on the UltimateFighter 1 finale. He has also been a regular on ESPN’s MMA Livebroadcast as an expert analyst.

Silva (32-4) is coming off arguably the most satisfying win of his career against Chael Sonnen in July and has yet to have been bested inside the UFC Octagon.

The card, which was expected to showcase an anticipated featherweight title bout between Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar, abruptly came to a halt when Aldo was forced to pull out after suffering a foot injury.

Making matters worse, former champion Quinton Jackson, who was supposed to challenge the prominent Glover Teixeira, has also pulled out citing injuries, putting an additional dent to the previously stacked card in Brazil. Countryman Fabio Maldonado is now slated to fill in to face Teixeira in a light heavyweight contest.

In other notable fights, former heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira returns against Dave Herman while rising welterweight sensation Erick Silva takes on the toughest challenge of his career against Jon Fitch.

Tacoma, WA (September 7, 2012) – The CageSport series’ highly-anticipated debut on Root TV will feature an outstanding broadcast team of Miesha “Cupcake” Tate, Danny Bonaduce and Jeff Osborne.

The card takes place Saturday, September 29 at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma.

Root Sports is owned and operated by DIRECTV Sports Networks. Root Sports owns regional telecast rights for many professional and collegiate teams including the Seattle Marines, Pittsburgh Penguins, Pittsburgh Pirates, Utah Jazz, Big Sky Conference and Gonzaga University. They also broadcast Big 12, Pac-12 and Conference USA games for both basketball and football.

A lifelong entertainer with an array of talents, Bonaduce’s a familiar face to people from all walks of life. In 1970, Bonaduce burst onto the scene by starring on the hit show “The Partridge Family”. Danny continued to appear on various shows, most recently making a splash on the critically acclaimed TV series World’s Dumbest. In 2000 Bonaduce landed on the highly rated radio program, The Jamie and Danny Show. Currently, he has a show in Seattle called The Danny Bonaduce Show.

A passionate member of the fight community, Bonaduce is undefeated in the celebrity boxing and wrestling circuit, facing fellow celebrities such as Donny Osmond, Barry Williams, attorney Robert Shapiro, and 6’4 240 lb former baseball MVP Jose Canseco.

Jeff Osborne is known throughout the world as an MMA play by play announcer. Osborne commentated UFC 33-37 and is considered one of the top broadcasters in the industry.

Jeff has seen MMA from every angle; broadcasting to promoting and even fighting. In 2002 Osborne promoted the first ever all female MMA show that drew over 1800 fans to the event. Between the initial MMA event and 2010, Osborne has put on 6 all-women’s MMA shows which are arguably half of all-female events in that time span. On one of those shows, a future superstar named Miesha Tate made her pro debut.

Born and raised in Tacoma, Tate is amongst the top female mixed martial artists on the planet and fought under the CageSport banner earlier in her career. Tate, 13-3, has an enormous following and fought multiple times on the Showtime Network. Currently under contract with globally renowned Strikeforce, the bantamweight superstar won Fighter of the Year in 2010 and 2011. In her most recent match, Tate submitted Julie Kedzie in the third round.

A former world champion, Tate’s March 2012 bout against Rhonda Rousey was the most viewed female MMA fight in history.

“This broadcast team is one of a kind and the fact that they’re doing our first card on Root TV is that much more of a reason to check out the action,” exclaimed promoter Brian Halquist, CEO of Halquist Productions. “Miesha, Danny and Jeff all have unique personalities backed by great knowledge of the fight game. I’m really excited to hear them and know that the viewers on Root TV will be treated to a great telecast.”

The official “CageSport XXI” lineup will be announced in the coming days. For more information, go to Halquistproductions.com or Northwest.Rootsports.com.

Machida out, Belfort in, to challenge Jones at UFC 152!

In a quick turnaround, Jon Jones will now face Vitor Belfort instead of Lyoto Machida on September 22nd. Jones, who was expected to faceDan Henderson on September 1st, chose to not fight at all when his foe was forced to sit out due to an injury.

Middleweight contender Chael Sonnen offered to step in, but Jones declined, which prompted UFC president Dana White to pull the plug on the entire UFC 151 card.

Lyoto Machida was then projected to be Jones’ opponent in Toronto on the 22nd, but it’s now the former light heavyweight titlist Vitor Belfort who will get the shot.

Belfort is 21-9 and is coming off two straight victories inside the Octagon.

According to White, UFC 151 is nixed and the next event will remain UFC 152 as it was intially titled.

Stay tuned for more updates.

UFC 151 Update: Henderson out with injury, Jones will face Machida on September 22nd!

A partial rupture of the MCL has forced former Strikeforce light
heavyweight champ Dan Henderson to pull out in his anticipated
showdown against the UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones originally
scheduled for September 1st at Mandalay Bay Center in Las Vegas. The
entire card has now been canceled and Jones is now slated to take on
Lyoto Machida in Toronto on the 22nd.

UFC president Dana White held a press conference today with the
disappointing news. It’s been revealed that recent middleweight title
challenger Chael Sonnen has offered to step in as a replacement, but
Jones and his trainer Greg Jackson did not accept.

White, furious at the fact that Jones was unwilling to put his title
on the line against a late replacement had no choice but to cancel the
entire card.

Sonnen, who twice unsuccessfully challenged Anderson Silva for the
middleweight crown was to face old rival Forrest Griffin later in the
year, but already had his sights on a showdown against Jones. The war
of words had begun through tweets, but it looks like Sonnen will have
to wait his turn.

Jones beat Machida in their initial encounter in last December,
coincidentally, in Toronto where the rematch will take place.

In the main event, Josh “The Peoples Warrior” Burkman (22-9) fights Jamie “The Chosyn 1” Yager (6-2) in a battle to prove who is worthy of a return to the next level. Burkman defeated Koffi Adzitso via unanimous decision last February in Showdown Fights “Breakout” before a sold out crowd at the UCCU Center. Pushing his record to 22-9 and bringing him one-step closer to returning to the “Big Show.” A strong wrestling and grappling background coupled with Burkmans’ experience will be implemented in an all out war with Jamie Yager.

Fighting Burkman will be like fighting his exact opposite, as he too likes to get fights to the ground and use vicious striking to take his opponents out. Yager has far less experience fighting professionally but does not see that as a disadvantage as they have both competed at the highest level. Neither fighter wants this bout to go the distance as they each view the fight as “Just Business, nothing personal, but this is the most important fight of my career.” The winner of this bout sets himself up to be a small step from obtaining their goals.

In the co-main event, Sean “O’Connell (12-4) battles James “The Sandman” Irvin (15-10) in a Light Heavyweight contest that has to potential to be another fight of the night. O’Connell has beaten both opponent that’s been put in front of him in Showdown Fights, but the challenger he faces on August 25 is going to be the toughest test to date. Irvin has fought, and holds victories over some of the most polarizing figures in the sport. Look for this bout to be “fight of the night” as these two sluggers fight to put their opponents away. Don’t blink as this bout could be over seconds into round one.

This show will also feature a unique format dubbed as an “Eliminator Round” with four fighters; David Castillo, Gordon Bell, Clay Collard, and Justin Buchholz facing off for the right to compete in November for the first ever Showdown Fights Lightweight Championship. David Castillo (15-4) draws Gordon Bell (7-0) in a rematch that could end in a brutal knockout or crafty submission. These two met once before which saw Bell victorious via a submission that Castillo vows will not allow to happen again. Striking great Clay Collard (9-3) will face “Team Alpha Male’s” Justin Buchholz (12-7) who is the only non-Utah resident in the “Eliminator”. Will Buchholz experience prove to be too much for the 19 year old Collard or will youth prevail???

Also one the card BYU stand out football star Jan Jorgensen (3-0) takes on Clifton Bishop (3-1) in the toughest test of his young career. Can Jorgensen stay unbeaten or with the well-rounded Bishop become the first blemish on his perfect thus far record?

mMA Events on GFL COMBAT SPORTS NETWORK

– Friday, July 27, 2012 9:00pm ET featuring Xtreme Cage Wars Fighting Championship (XCWFC) presents “XCWFC 49” at the North Battleford Civic Centre in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. In the main event, Caleb Ermine (1-0) battles Dauda Keita (1-0) for the XCWFC Lightweight Title. Ermine has a well balanced attack in his arsenal and loves to get the fight to the ground where he can apply a submission hold. Ermine won his first fight in a minute when he got the tapout win via choke. Keita has already won a title with XCWFC as he was the former Welterweight Champion, getting second round submission of his own. You have to expect that Keita will be the stronger fighter in the cage as he is naturally the bigger fighter. Look for Keita to try and over power Ermine in the early going. If Ermine can withstand Keita’s advances, he might be able to wear Keita out as the drop in weight class could pose a problem as the fight goes on in the cardio department for Keita. Either way this fight goes, it is for all the marbles and someone is walking away with championship gold. In the co-main event, Ricky Sanderson (0-0) fights Jake Ahenakew (0-1) in a lightweight contenders match. Sanderson is making his debut in this bout against Ahenakew who will have the advantage when it comes to cage time, but has shown that he is susceptible to submissions as he lost his only bout via tapout. This is an even matchup between the two Canadians and a victory for either man will get their career going in the right direction early on and open up more doors for them in the future. Expect both men to be desperate for a victory and throw everything but the kitchen sink at one another. This bout has all the makings of fight of the night, because all the chips are down on the table and both of these men need a win..

– Saturday, July 28, 2012 7:30pm ET featuring Elite 1 MMA – Redemption from the Redball Internet Centre. In the main event, Richard Arsenault (4-2) of Wellington, PE defends his Elite 1 MMA Welterweight Championship against tough challenger Ricky Goodall (9-6). Arsenault is riding a 2-fight win streak and has finished his opponents in all 4 of his wins. A tough draw for any fighter, Arsenault has only lost by decision. The Champion brings heavy hands and a big heart into the cage every time and has become a fan favorite wherever he fights. Goodall is by far the most experienced fighter Arsenault has ever faced and a real threat to his title. Goodall is famous for fighting a who’s who on the Canadian fight scene and never backs away from an opponent. Always a game fighter, Goodall can mix it up with the best of them and prefers to let his hands do the talking in the cage. Goodall is also a strong grappler so this should be a great fight as the champion and challenger both have something to prove. In the co-main event, Nabil “The Thrill” Khatib (11-7) fights Matt MacGrath. Khatib comes into the bout having fought all over the Great White North and looks to claim the #1 Contender’s spot with a victory. Khatib has always been on the cusp of greatness and a victory over the durable McGrath might put him next in line to face the winner of the main event for the title. MacGrath (6-8) is a Bellator veteran and looks to get back in the win column with a victory over the gritty Khatib. MacGrath is a well-rounded fighter who has fought several UFC vets and is not intimidated by anyone. Look for MacGrath to come out swinging early or looking for a takedown and try to get a quick submission. The winner of this bout looks like the next candidate for a title shot.

– Saturday, July 28, 2012 8:00pm ET featuring Sportfight X from the Boutwell Auditorium in Birmingham, Alabama. In the main event, Daniel O’Brien (1-0) fights Elite XC and Bellator veteran Moyses Gabin (5-4) in a middleweight showdown. O’Brien holds his win via first round TKO and has been gearing up for this bout retooling his arsenal so expect a fighter that is both heavy handed and a strong grappler. Gabin goes into the bout with a very decided experience advantage and has faced much stiffer competition in his career. Look for Gabin to shoot in early on O’Brien early and try and lock up a submission. This fight should be action packed as this is a big step for O’Brien and if he can win it will push his career to the next level. For Gabin, a win here could put him back on the path of Bellator or another international organization. In the co-main event, Stephen Wilhite (2-0) takes on Chad Livingston (6-1) in the lightweight division. Wilhite is a grappling standout who has both victories by choke. He wants to get the fight to the mat as quick as possible and go for the neck. Livingston made a name for himself fighting in his home state of Florida where he won a tourney and became champion for a rising promotion in South Florida. Livingston has great cardio and likes to push the pace for three rounds. These two 155 lb fighters could prove to be the fight of the night as both are hungry, active fighters who always take the fight to their opponent. There shouldn’t be any backing up in this fight. Matt Ward (2-0) is also scheduled to fight Allen Little (0-2) in a middleweight scrap. This bout should present fireworks from the opening bell as Ward likes to throw bombs while looking for opportunities on the ground and Little uses a high reward high risk style of fighting that always makes him a crows favorite. Don’t blink in this bout.

Tacoma, WA (July 15, 2012) – Sterling Ford and Patricia Vidonic each proved why they’re amongst the top fighters in their respective weight classes following impressive victories Saturday evening at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, WA.

Headlining the highly-anticipated CageSport XX card, Ford scored an impressive TKO over James Marohl in the second of their three round lightweight bout. In the opening moments, Marohl came out swinging for the fences and landed a few solid shots, but the patient Ford did some damage of his own. At the start of the second stanza, Marohl landed a powerful jab which dropped Ford to his knees.

The gritty Ford recovered and quickly turned the tides against his free-swinging foe. Marohl, who clearly was gunning for a knockout, ran out of gas and Ford begun landing crisp shots. Unlike Ford, Marohl couldn’t recover from the damage and was visibly exhausted, forcing the referee to stop the contest at 3:24.

Ford, of Spokane, WA, is now 14-5. Marohl, who hails from Longview, WA, slips to 6-2.

In the co-featured bout of the evening, “Little” Patricia Vidonic of Medford, OR earned a hard-fought three round unanimous decision over hometown favorite “Slick” Sally Krumdiak. The fight was fought in close quarters early on, with both ladies connecting with knees to the kidney. Towards the end of the opening round, Vidonic took Krumdiak down and connected with big blows, but was unable to close the show.

Vidonic took the fight to the ground in the second stanza, finding a home for hard elbow strikes, causing Krumdiak to bleed from her nose. Behind on the scorecards and backed by rally cries from her sizable fan base, Krumdiak briefly buzzed Vidonic with a hard jab but couldn’t capitalize. Shortly thereafter, the fight returned to the ground, where Vidonic connected with a plethora of hard elbows.

All three judges scored the fight 29-28 for Vidonic, who improved to 6-3. Bellingham, WA’s Krumdiak falls to 9-6.

Burien, WA resident Brent “Road Kill” Knopp, 3-0, scored a dominant second round TKO over visitor Darrio Mobley of Medford, OR. In a battle of unbeatens, Knopp wore down Mosley, 2-1, and delivered a non-stop onslaught until the contest was officially stopped at 3:03.

In other action, Byron Sutton scored a close unanimous decision over Jerome Jones and Beau Hamilton bested Calvin Horton in three rounders, while Shaine Jaime, Benny Vinson, Justin Harrington, Trevor Sojot and Gustavo Lopez all scored impressive stoppages.

“CageSport XX was one of the most exciting events I’ve ever promoted,” said Halquist Productions CEO Brian Halquist, whose promoted more than 100 MMA and boxing cards. “The crowd was awesome and loved all of the fights. This is what combat sports are all about!”

In addition to the solid action, MMA star Miesha Tate, one of the world’s most famous female fighters, was on hand and mingled with fans throughout the evening.

CageSport XX: Loaded from end to end

Tacoma, WA (July 10, 2012) –When Brian Halquist put together “CageSport XX,” he followed the same plan that’s helped him earn the notation as one of the west coast’s top promoters; putting the fans first.

Halquist, along with his reliable staff, worked tirelessly on an exciting fight card slated for Saturday evening at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, WA.

A limited number of tickets are still available and can be purchased by going to ticketmaster.com or at the Emerald Queen box office.

Headlining the ten-bout event is a three round lightweight battle between Spokane, WA’s Sterling Ford, 15-4, and interstate rival James Marohl, 6-1, of Longview. Both fighters are on the cusp of landing a big fight and have been on a hot streak during the last few years, winning 11 of their last 12 fights combined.

Female standouts “Slick” Sally Krumdiak of Bellingham, WA and “Little” Patricia Vidonic will go toe to toe in the highly anticipated three round co-feature. Krumdiak and Medford, OR’s Vidonic fought most of the top fighters in and around the strawweight division. Both are regarded as upper echelon fighters and believe a victory will earn them a title shot.

Much like the main bouts, the supporting contests features talented combatants looking to move up the ladder. Unbeaten rising stars Cory Vombaur, Justin Harrington Gustavo Lopez and Shaine Jamie will all look to make waves in separate bouts. Additional matches include Jerome Jones, 4-3, against Byron Sutton, 5-3, along with a battle of unbeaten middleweights when Brent Knopp challenges Darrio Mobley.

“We’re putting our best foot forward with this card,” said Halquist. “The CageSport staff did a great job of making this exciting event a reality and I consider it extremely important for every fight to be one that the fans want to see. If you live in the Pacific Northwest, I’d definitely come out for fight night because you’re in for a real treat of incredible MMA fights!”

Former world champion, Female Fighter of the Year and CageSport veteran Miesha Tate is going to be at the fights as the evening’s special guest. A Tacoma native, Tate will be available for a meet and greet, photo ops and autographs throughout the evening for all ticketholders.

Krumdiak-Vidonic: For More Than Bragging Rights

Tacoma, WA (July 6, 2012) – “Slick” Sally Krumdiack hails from Washington State. “Little” Patricia Vidonic resides in neighboring Oregon. They each battled top-tier opponents and traveled across the nation in doing so. Both went through ups and downs in their careers, but are currently regarded as elite martial artists. Most importantly, neither Krumdiack nor Vidonic has ever backed down from a challenge. The two have fought the best of the best, sharing the octagon with superstar Tara LaRosa, Rosi Sexton, Hiroko Kitamura, Saori Ishioka and Jessica Penne amongst others.

On July 14 at the Emerald Queen Casino, the tough and talented women square off in the three round co-feature on Halquist Productions’ “CageSport XX” card. Tickets starting at $35 can be purchased on ticketmaster.com or at the Emerald Queen box office.

A well balanced fighter, Krumdiak, 9-5, has the edge in experience. The rugged 29-year-old turned pro in 2006, four years before her foe. Vidonic, a 5’2 submission master, won five of her first six professional fights against quality opposition. Although she dropped her last two bouts by decision, few would be surprised if she emerged victorious on July 14.

“This is one of the most interesting fights we’ve had in a long time,” said promoter Brian Halquist. “Krumdiak and Vidonic are both outstanding fighters who were gutsy enough to accept yet another tough challenge by facing off. The fans are in for a real treat!”

Headlining the card is an interesting three round Evergreen State showdown between lightweights Sterling Ford, 14-5, and James Marohl, 6-1. Both Ford, of Spoake and Longview’s Marohl have been on a tear, winning 11 of their last 12 fights combined. Like the Krumdiak-Vidonic bout, the victor will likely receive a big fight in the near future.

Local prospects Shane Jamie (1-0), Benny Vinson (3-1), Justin Harrington (1-0), Calvin Horton (3-2) and Cory Vombaur (2-0) are set to appear in separate matches. Brent Knopp risks his 2-0 professional ledger record against fellow 2-0 combatant Darrio Mobley and Jerome Jones (4-3) meets Byron Sutton (5-3).

All undercard bouts are also scheduled for three rounds.

Former world champion, Female Fighter of the Year and CageSport veteran Miesha Tate will be on hand as a special cageside guest. A Tacoma native, Tate is available for a meet and greet, photo ops and autographs throughout the evening for all ticketholders.
