Rumble in the cage 45 Live IPPV on GFL

Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada – Western Canada’s premier cage fighting event returns on November 26 as Rumble in the Cage presents RITC 45 at the Lethbridge Exhibition – South Pavillion, Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada with 16 exciting bouts Live on iPPV at www.GFL.tv. Rumble in the Cage is a breeding ground for the international promotions and RITC 45 will showcase some of the rising amateur and professional mixed martial artists soon to hit the national scene.

In the main event, hometown hero and UFC veteran Jesse Bongfeldt (15-5-1) from Canadian Martial Arts Centre/Kenora MMA Gym fights Brandon MacArthur (3-17) in a middleweight tilt. Bongfeldt last fought for RITC in a title fight in which he was victorious. He then got a call up to the UFC where he had one draw and one loss. Now back at his old stomping grounds, he looks to make MacArthur his first victim on his road back to the UFC. Bongfeldt is one of the top middleweights in Canada and is an experienced grappler and strikers as many of his victories have come by way of KO or submission. For MacArthur, he is nothing if not resilient and in his 20 fights in MMA he has never backed down from a challenge. RITC was having a hard time finding an opponent for the tough Bongfeldt and MacArthur stepped up to the challenge and accepted the fight, something most wouldn’t do. For him to pull off the upset, he will need to catch Bongfeldt with a punch, kick or submission early on before the UFC vet can settle in.

In the co-main event, Brandt Dewsberry (7-1-1) battles Joe Gobiel (3-2) in a welterweight scrap. Both fighters are coming off nice submission victories in their last fights, and for one of them it will be 2 in a row. Dewsberry has more experience and should be able to use that to his advantage the longer the fight progresses. For Gobiel, he has made steady improvement in these 3 MMA bouts and if he continues to show as much advancement in this bout, it could be “fight of the night” for the fans in Lethbridge. With the main event getting the lion’s share of press and media attention, don’t let this co-main event fly under the radar. It should be a barnburner.

You won’t find a more thrilling card then this one. For more information or to purchase tickets go to www.rumbleinthecage.com. Be sure to catch all of the action LIVE on November 26 as Rumble in the Cage presents RITC 45 exclusively on pay-per-view at www.GFL.tv.

– Friday, November 18, 2011 8:30pm ET featuring Ring of Combat 38 from the Tropicana in Atlantic City, NJ. The main event is really a 5-fight main event as 5 titles will be up for grabs. In one match, ROC Welterweight Champion and UFC veteran Pete Sell (9-5) defends his Welterweight Title for the first time against Nordine Taleb (3-1). The ROC Featherweight Title is also on the line as champion Deividas Taurosevicious (13-5) defends his strap against Marlon Moraes (5-2-1). The Renzo Gracie student, Taurosevicious, has 9 victories coming by submission while Moraes has all 5 of his victories coming by way of stoppage, either KO or submission. In another main-event caliber fight, undefeated Al Iaquinta (6-0-1) defends his ROC Lightweight Championship against UFC veteran Patrick Audinwood (9-2-1). Iaquinta is a Matt Serra trained fighter and a ROC veteran and should have the hometown crowd behind him. But Audinwood is cutting down from 170 where he previously has fought so he will give Iaquinta everything he can handle in the strength department. In still more championship action, Jimmie Rivera (8-1) takes on Anthony Leone (9-4) for the ROC Bantamweight Championship. Rivera is on a 7-fight win streak and also a current champion of another top-level MMA organization. Rivera is also formally a featherweight and will bring a size advantage into the fight and will look to use his wrestling and grind down Leone and finish the fight in the later rounds. For WEC and Bellator veteran Leone, this is a chance to take down a lion and win the most prestigious MMA title on the East Coast. Expect Leone to push the action and try to wear out the bigger Rivera. The final title that will be on the line is the ROC Light Heavyweight Championship when undefeated Champion Tom DeBlass (5-0) battles Davit Tkeshelashvili (1-1). DeBlass is out of the Renzo Gracie camp and has never tasted defeat. DeBlass’ last two fights have ended in the first round, so expect him to come out with guns blazing.

– Friday, November 18, 2011 8:30pm ET featuring Cut Throat MMA – Brawl at Bourbon Street, Merrionette, IL. In the main event, Dan Reimer (2-1) battles Danny Somers (2-0). Both fighters are on 2-fight win streaks, with Reimer’s going the distance for both of his victories while Somers has won by TKO and submission. This will be a great matchup as Reimer prefers to wear out his opponents and grind them down while Somers looks for the early strike or submission to take his opponents out. Whoever can force take charge of the pace of the fight will probably win this match. In the co-main event, Sean Gee (2-0) fights Miguel Garza (1-0). One of these undefeated fighters is leaving the cage with their first loss. Gee is a fast started ending both of his fights inside of one round. For Garza, he also one his lone victory coming in the first round, by submission. Gee and Garza are mirrors of themselves so it will be interesting to see who has the upper hand. Expect fireworks in this bout, as it probably won’t get out of the first round, no matter who wins. Definitely a “fight of the night” contender.

– Friday, November 18, 2011 9:00pm ET featuring Showdown Fights Evolution, UCCU, Orem, Utah. An exciting mixture of veteran fighters and top performing new prospects will be rounded out by a main event that will feature Utah’s own Jordan Smith (16-2-1) and Josh McDonald (8-4). Jordan Smith is fresh off a unanimous decision victory over UFC veteran Karo Parisyan in Brazil on the 14th of September and looks for his 17th win in his young career. Jordan splits training time between “One Hit MMA” in Clearfield Utah and the world famous “Blackhouse” in Los Angeles, California. A former 7th grade science teacher, Smith retired from that profession so he could focus full-time on his MMA career. WEC, ShoXC, and Strikeforce veteran Josh McDonald trains at the Fairtex Academy in San Francisco and with the Cesar Gracie/Scrap Pack group. A recent win over Ron Keslar brings McDonald one-step closer to his goal. Fireworks will fly when the cage door shuts behind these crafty fighters that look to move up in the rankings Showdown Fights “Evolution” November 18, 2011 Doors open 5:30 pm first fight at 7:00pm Another bout on the card that has all the makings of “Fight of the Night” pits two unbeaten fighters, Ohio’s own Tim Ruberg (6-0) will face Utah’s Jason South (7-0) in battle that many think will lead the winner to the “Big Show”. Many of the local favorites will be also be featured on the fight card including the highly anticipated Pro Debut of former BYU standout Jan Jorgensen, Local female fighting superstar Tandi Schaeffer, along with Brandon Melendez, Jerome Hatch, and Dayne Aristizabel.

– Friday, November 18, 2011 9:00pm ET featuring Xtreme Cage Wars 45, Odeon Event Center, Saskatchewan, Canada. In the main event, XCW Bantamweight Champion Rob Seniuk (3-0) defends his title against #1 Challenger Dennis Papineau (2-2). Seniuk is a tough champion as he has cleared out most of the top amateur bantamweights, but Papineau is ready to show that he has what it takes to defeat the undefeated Champion and take home the 135 lb title at the same time. Bantamweights are notorious for having the best cardio conditioning of all MMA fighters, so expect Seniuk and Papineau to not disappoint here. They both are looking at turning heads, as the main event, so don’t blink. Seniuk is a hometown hero in Saskatoon, so he should have the crowd on his side, and he will look to pick apart the challenger with in and out strikes and then change levels for takedowns. Papineau is known for his fierce ground and pound so if the fight hits the mat, look for him to try and move to side control where he can land some heavy strikes. In the co-main event, Corey Atkinson (3-3) fights Evander Masuskapoe (1-1-1) in a welterweight contest. Both are Saskatchewan natives and have similar backgrounds. Both are strong grapplers but can also box a bit. Look for this bout to possibly stay standing for the duration of the fight. Atkinson and Masuskapoe both have a tendency to head-hunt so this should be a classic, back and forth slugfest.

– Saturday, November 19, 2011 8:00pm ET featuring Battle in the Desert 4, Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas, NV. In the lightweight (135 pounds) co-main event, superstar Phanuwat “Coke” Chunhawat (145-24-1 (24 KO’s) of Oakland, Calif. via Thailand will face battle-tested Muay Thai champion and professional boxing contender Rami Ibrahim (13-7-2 (6 KO’s) of Philadelphia, Pa. three-time world champion Malaipet Sasiprapa (138-27-5 (26 KO’s) will make his long-awaited return to the ring on United States soil when he squares off with rising Muay Thai and MMA star Jose Palacios (5-2 (3 KO’s) of San Jose, Calif. in a featured WBC U.S. welterweight (147 pounds) championship bout. Two knockout artists and rapidly emerging forces will collide when Las Vegas-based Muay Thai and mixed martial arts (MMA) standout Chidi Njokuani (10-1 (6 KO’s) squares off with aggressive-minded Ken Tran (13-3 (10 KO’s) of Vancouver B.C., Canada in a 170-pound catchweight fight. The main card will also be highlighted by a pair of women’s bouts. Former Cung Le-protege Elaina Maxwell (0-0) of San Francisco, Calif. will face off with Roxy “Balboa” Richardson (2-1) of Los Angeles, Calif. at super lightweight (140 pounds) while Vivian Leung (1-0) of Las Vegas via Saskatoon, Canada will lock horns with Heidi Otterbein (3-1 (1 KO) of Las Vegas via Vancouver B.C., Canada in a 120 pound catchweight affair.

– Saturday, November 19, 2011 10:30pm ET Fight Night Round XVII Clash at the college, Mount Vernon, WA. In the main event, Galen Williams (1-0) fights Brian Lee (0-0). Williams is coming off of a decision victory less In the main event, FNE 170 lb Champion Corey Watson (1-0) defends his title against newcomer Nick Hoff (0-0) in a welterweight showdown. Watson defeated his only opponent in seconds with an armbar and will look to do the same to Hoff who is debuting in a title fight. Hoff will have the element of surprise as there is no tape to watch on him and what his strengths and weakness are in MMA. Expect Watson to push ahead and try to get Hoff to the mat and move to a favorable position for a submission attempt. In the co-main event, FNE 135 lb Champion, Jason Ellis (3-1) is scheduled to defend his title against an opponent to be named. Ellis is on a 3-fight win streak and won the bantamweight title earlier this year with a TKO finish in Round 1. Whoever FNE puts in front of Ellis, expect the Champion to charge ahead and swarm his opponent and look for an opportunity to make it a quick night.

ring of combat 38 Live IPPV on GFL

Atlantic City, NJ – Ring of Combat returns November 18 with ROC XXXVIII. This event has another stacked lineup, something Ring of Combat has become synonymous with, as 5 titles will be on the line as fans from all over the world will be tuning in either in person at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey or Live on iPPV at www.GFL.tv – GFL Combat Sports Network to watch this exciting card. ROC continues to be the linchpin of East Coast MMA and this 16-bout card reiterates its dominance as the top dog in the Tri-State area.

The main event is really a 5-fight main event as 5 titles will be up for grabs. In one match, ROC Welterweight Champion and UFC veteran Pete Sell (9-5) defends his Welterweight Title for the first time against Nordine Taleb (3-1). Sell is coming off of a second round submission victory against Elijah Harshbarger where Sell looked dominant and showed the MMA crowd he is back to 100% after taking time off to heal various injuries. For Taleb, who is riding a 3-fight win streak, this will be the biggest test of his young career. ROC officials hold Taleb in high regard as he was granted this title fight, so don’t be fooled by the lack of experience for Taleb. He is one of Montreal’s gems of MMA and trains with some of the best fighters in the world including UFC Welterweight Champion, Georges St-Pierre at the Tristar gym. For Sell, this is another opportunity to prove that “Drago” is just hitting his peak.

The ROC Featherweight Title is also on the line as champion Deividas Taurosevicious (13-5) defends his strap against Marlon Moraes (5-2-1). The Renzo Gracie protégé, Taurosevicious, has 9 victories coming by submission while Moraes has all 5 of his victories coming by way of stoppage, either KO or submission. Taurosevicious is one of the best grapplers ever trained by Gracie, so look for him to get the fight to the mat quickly. Moraes will have to defend the takedown attempt and make Taurosevicious pay in the standup game if he is going to win the fight and take home the 145 lb belt. This has all of the making to be fight of the night as these two will put on a high pace fight.

Iaquinta’s last bout was a quick victory against an opponent who took him to the limit previously, so Iaquinta’s all-around MMA game is growing by leaps and bounds with each fight. For Audinwood, having dropped two tough fights in the UFC, he has made the permanent move down to lightweight and looks to rebound against the ROC champ.

In still more championship action, Jimmie Rivera (8-1) takes on Anthony Leone (9-4) for the ROC Bantamweight Championship. Rivera is on a 7-fight win streak and also a current champion of another top-level MMA organization. Rivera, is also formally a featherweight and will bring a size advantage into the fight and will look to use his wrestling and grind down Leone and finish the fight in the later rounds.

For Tkeshelashvili he was submitted in his last bout, so he will have to withstand the grappling of DeBlass early on to make this a fight.

You won’t find a more thrilling card then this one. Be sure to catch all of the action LIVE on November 18 as Ring of Combat presents ROC XXXVIII exclusively on pay-per-view at www.GFL.tv.

Teenager Penny can go all the way, claims Lowes.(Sport)

Daily Post (Liverpool, England) July 7, 2008 Byline: BY ROSS HEPPENSTALL Warrington 60 Wakefield 24 WARRINGTON caretaker coach Jimmy Lowes admitted hat-trick hero Kevin Penny’s showboating in yesterday’s 11-try demolition of engage Super League play-off rivals Wakefield could have been construed as “disrespectful”.

Homegrown youngster Penny claimed a clinical treble in the 60-24 win to underline his rich potential but celebrated his third score in the closing stages by skipping his way over the line after leaving visiting defenders trailing in his wake.

Effectively celebrating the score before the winger had crossed the line made a mockery of Wakefield’s outpaced players and Lowes – a no-nonsense Yorkshireman – acknowledged such antics could rile opposition defenders. in our site lowes printable coupon

“I’m not a big fan of that,” said Lowes, who has now presided over four wins in five games since being placed in caretaker charge of Warrington.

“He could have got caught and it’s just not my thing. It’s a bit disrespectful to the opposition but that’s part of Kevin’s learning.” Lowes also had reason to thank Penny after his three scores enhanced the former Bradford and Great Britain hooker’s claims to be appointed Wolves coach on a permanent basis.

Lowes, 37, was handed the caretaker reins until the end of the season after long-serving coach Paul Cullen left the Halliwell Jones Stadium in the wake of May’s home defeat to struggling Castleford.

Warrington had hit rockbottom at that point but Lowes has breathed new life into their season and transmitted the desire that characterised his own career into the players who underachieved so frequently under Cullen.

That six different players crossed the line in the opening 40 minutes said everything about Warrington’s renaissance under Lowes.

Matt King, Jon Clarke, Chris Riley, Michael Monaghan, Simon Grix and Penny all touched down to help the Wolves establish a 34-18 interval lead against the Challenge Cup semi-finalists. in our site lowes printable coupon

King, Martin Gleeson and Riley then scored after the break and Penny added a brace to complete his treble and take the hosts’ try tally to 11.

Lowes added: “How far Kevin goes is down to him really and all about keeping his feet on the ground.

“He’s certainly got the potential because he does a lot of damage with the ball, but he was also helped a lot by his team-mates as well.

“As for the play-offs, we’re not even thinking about that – we’re taking it week by week.” Wakefield crossed through Matt Petersen, Richard Moore, Jason Demetriou in the first half and Matt Blaymire after the break.

The main event at VFN features Rich “No Love” Clementi and Ronnie “Bam Bam” Rogers. A contestant on ‘The Ultimate Fighter 4’ reality show and longtime UFC veteran, Clementi has notable wins over Melvin Guillard and Sam Stout, and is coming off of a May loss at Dream in Japan to Shinya Aoki, currently ranked 4th in the world. With over 60 professional fights on his resume more than half of his wins have come by way of submission. Ronnie Rogers enters with a record of 9-5 (5-1 in his last 6) with his last two wins coming over UFC vet Diego Saraiva and Bellator vet Bryan Goldsby. Half of Rogers’ victories have also come via submission, setting this bout up for a ground war.

Also on the card is the tough veteran journeyman clash between Matt Sung Lee and Tiawan Howard. Howard is coming off a split-decision win over UFC/TUF veteran Alex Karalexis in June, while Lee lost a rough battle in his last fight to UFC vet and now Bellator tournament finalist Ben “Killa B” Saunders. Lee has a notable war on his resume in a Bodog title fight with (now) Bellator champion Eddie Alverez that went the distance.

The local featured fight is the professional debuts of Carlos Neto and Ricardo Georges. Georges, at just 20 years old, is considered one of the hottest 170’ers in New England with a 7-1 amateur record that includes a title win. Neto is making his first appearance in the ring but is a longtime veteran trainer of a Who’s Who list of top-level pro’s fighting within the UFC, Strikeforce and Bellator. A BJJ black belt, Neto is a former member of famed Brazilian Top Team in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil and a winner of countless grappling/BJJ tournaments. He is currently one of the head trainers at Wai Kru in Boston.

There are 2 featured Amateur fights scheduled; Colton Blanchette vs Ernesto Ornelas and Nick Logan vs Hiago Fontoura. Blanchette heads in to his 8th fight (5-2) at just 19 years old, training out if Cage Strikers. His opponent, 22 year old Maine native Ornelas is looking to remain undefeated and improve to 3-0. Undefeated Nick Logan enters his 3rd bout in 4 months and has finished his previous fights in less than 2 minutes each. Fontoura, training with the Fenix Fight Club, is 1-0 and finished his debut in June, also under 2 minutes.

The Rematch of the Night will take place when Kaline Medeiros and Katie Merrill step in to the ring. The two fought twice previously in the amateurs, with each getting a win. This is the pro debut for the undefeated Merrill. Medeiros lost her debut in May. For more information about Victory Promotions, please visit us online at http://www.victorypromotionsmma.com.

– Friday, October 21, 2011 7:30pm ET featuring Ringside MMA 12 – Daley vs Fioravanti from the Bell Center, Montreal, Canada. The main event will feature an explosive battle of international proportions as Paul “Semtex” Daley (27-11-2) from England will face American Luigi “The Italian Tank” Fioravanti (22-10-0). Daley, a notorious KO artist (with 20 of his wins coming by way of knock out), is a UFC and Strikeforce veteran, and made his last appearance in Montreal at UFC 113 in the infamous number one contender’s match for the UFC welterweight title when he faced Josh Koscheck. He will be making his return to the Centre Bell after having faced such formidable fighters as Duane Ludwig, Martin Kampmann, Dustin Hazelett, Scott Smith, Nick Diaz and Jake Shields. Facing him will be Fioravanti, who in addition to M-1 Challenge is also a veteran of the UFC and his preferred method of attack is no secret to anyone. Having already stood toe to toe against the likes of Chris Leben, Jon Fitch, Forrest Petz, Luck Cummo, Diego Sanchez, John Alessio, Pete Spratt and Joey Doerksen, this fighter keeps the crowds at the edge of their seats with his fearless willingness to stand and fight. Fight fans are sure to see an explosive battle between two warriors who use their fists to earn decisive victories rather than leave things in the hands of the judges. The co-main event of the night, Ringside MMA’s bantamweight and featherweight champions respectively, will battle for the 135 pound title in a 5 round match. Michel “Mitch” Gagnon (7-1), a 26 year old native of Sudbury and current champion at 145 pound, will make his debut at bantamweight after a successful and spectacular title defense last April when he stopped Rejean Groulx after a somewhat controversial takedown in what was already a candidate for fight of the year. New York is one of a handful of states in which MMA is still outlawed; sacrificing fighter safety, jobs and millions of dollars in revenue to neighboring states and countries since 1997. In his first feature length film, martial artist and filmmaker Kahleem Poole-Tejada presents an intimate account of the struggle to legalize MMA through the lens of one amateur fighter’s (Bradley Desir) quest to turn professional under the guidance of his coach (Stephen Koepfer). Viewers are offered a rare glimpse behind the curtain of the political, sometimes frightening, and always exciting world of mixed martial arts.

– Friday, October 14, 2011 9:00pm ET featuring Clash at the Kilt II from Tilted Kilt, Elgin, Il. In the main event of the night, former Cut Throat MMA Light Heavyweight Champion David “Baby Ruth” Booth (4-0) takes on Carlson Gracie’s Sam Ferguson (2-0) for the recently vacated Cut Throat MMA Middleweight Championship. Booth is coming off a stunning upset victory over previously undefeated Bill Johnson back in March, and Ferguson is looking to keep his perfect record unblemished and take home the Cut Throat gold. In the co-main event of the night, Mike “The Wardog” Reid (42-4, 16 KO) takes on St. Louis’ Quinton O’Brien (13-3, 4 KO) in a Muay Thai fight. These two Muay Thai standouts are eager to finally get the chance to fight, after missing out on a TBA championship showdown.

– Friday, October 14, 2011 10:00pm ET featuring Clash Epic Fighting 8, from the Sheraton Hotel, San Diego, CA. 30 fighters from over 14 different training camps will return to San Diego and fight in the Southern California Championships for CAMO’s State Amateur Tournament. Winners from the tournament matches will face Northern California’s Champions in the State Championship on December 3rd, 2011. Jamie Reyes (0-0, pro, 2-1 amateur) from 1-ON-1 Fight Co. makes his pro debut against Miguel Lavelle (0-1) out of Victory MMA in a bantamweight contest. Even though Reyes has never had a professional fight, his team 1-ON-1 Fight Co. has had several fighters fight for Epic Fighting. Reyes will have the element of surprise and also be able to draw on his training partners experiences when he steps into the cage. Reyes should have a good standup game, especially boxing, so look for him to throw punches in bunches at Lavelle. For Lavelle, he has the upper hand in experience and although it is only by one fight, it is still valuable and something he might look to exploit. Also, Lavelle comes from a great camp in Victory MMA home to some great MMA talents so expect Lavelle to be well versed in all aspects of MMA. He might try and look for a takedown early to negate Reyes’ striking. In the co-main event, and part of the Epic Fighting Tournament, Chris Bonilla (5-1 amateur) from Paragon Fight Team battles Francisco “Panchito” Castro (1-1 pro, 4-3 amateur) from USMC in a featherweight tilt. Bonilla is a submission machine getting 4 out of his 5 victories by tapping out his opponent. He will look to do the same against the gritty Castro whose best attribute is his cardio and who likes to wear down his opponents. Castro will be looking to take Bonilla into deep waters and test his conditioning, while Bonilla will look for a fast submission to ending things quickly.

Cruz outwrestles Johnson to retain title!

WASHINGTON, D.C.–UFC successfully made his debut at our nation’s capital that featured a series of exciting bouts at the Verizon Center in Chinatown, Washington, D.C. In the main event, UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz exemplified what defense and endurance are all about, winning a unanimous decision over Demetrious Johnson (9-2) after five fast-paced rounds that saw both guys deliver in terms of high level technique.

Both fighters displayed amazing quickness and speed. Cruz, who held a decent height advantage over his challenger, was able to thwart a lightning fast takedown attempt and momentarily gained side control in the opening frame. Johnson was versatile in mixing up his striking, but Cruz’s top notch defense did not allow the Kirkland, Washington native to land with much success. The energetic Johnson was the aggressor in round two, but the champion was again, able to defend incoming punches and takedown attempts and landed a hard knee blow to the midsection. In the third, Cruz threw his shorter opponent with a suplex and sunk in a rear naked choke. Johnson somehow managed to escape and got back on his feet but was taken down again shortly after.

Cruz finally gained full mount in the fourth, but the slick Johnson slipped out again. Neither appeared to have definitive advantage in the standup in terms of striking, but Cruz was able to accrue points with takedowns.

The fifth and final round saw a desperate Johnson come out swinging, but Cruz executed another Greco Roman suplex and sustained his dominant position from the top. In the closing seconds, an overzealous Johnson ran into a hard knee by Cruz and was taken down again by the champion. Judges’ scores were 50-45 (twice) and 49-46 for the champion.

With the win, Cruz extends his record to 19-1 and retains his UFC title for the second time.

STRUVE TAPS BARRY

After a tactical start between two usually explosive heavyweights, the ending came to an amazing finish as Netherlands’ Stefan ‘Skyscraper’ Struve (26-5) submitted New Orleans, LA’s Pat Barry (6-4) in the second stanza. It was a kickboxing affair in the first round with both fighters not having much success. In the second, the Dutch went for a guillotine choke and then transitioned to a triangle choke. Barry then responded with a Quinton Jacksonesque power bomb from while the triangle was still applied , but the slam did not appear to hurt Struve as he held onto the choke, forcing Barry to tap at the 3:22 mark.

JOHNSON RUMBLES THE SPANIARD

Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson kept himself relevant within the welterweight ranks by scoring an impressive TKO win over the spoiler minded Charlie ‘The Spaniard’ Brenneman (14-3). From the opening seconds, Johnson went for the knockout and Brenneman did his best to evade strikes and shot in for a double leg takedown. Johnson sprawled and landed some knees to the body and gained dominant position on the ground. When Brenneman got back up, there was a picture perfect kick by Johnson that connected at the noggin and the referee immediately stopped the contest when Brenneman fell to the canvas. The official time of the stoppage was 2:49 of the first round. With the win, Johnson improves his ledger to 10-3.

WIMAN REPEATS VICTORY OVER DANZIG

It was a rough and tough battle between former foes Mac Danzig (20-9-1) and Matt Wiman (14-6) as these lightweights duked it out for the second time. The first match ended in controversy when Wiman was credited with a guillotine choke that Danzig seemingly did not submit to. The rematch went to the distance and it was Danzig who appeared to have done a bit more to outwork and out-grind his familiar foe. While Danzig might have been the busier guy, Wiman didn’t wilt and proved his superior strength with harder punches. Danzig secured takedowns in rounds two and three, but didn’t do enough on the judges’ scorecards that all read 29-28. Fans in the arena booed the decision

Unbeaten British submission specialist Paul Sass (12-0) impressed the crowd, defeating Michael Johnson (10-6) inside the first frame in a battle of lightweights. Johnson clearly held the upper hand striking, staggering the jiu jitsu minded Sass with punches and kicks. Just when it appeared as though things were going in favor of Johnson, Sass pulled guard and was able to secure a heel hook to force the tap at the 3:00 mark.

Washington D.C’s own Mike ‘The Hulk’ Easton (11-1) brought the fans to their feet, putting on a decisive victory over Lynchburg, VA’s Byron Bloodworth (6-2) in two rounds. After a slow feel out first round, Easton, who was cheered on by a large portion of the D.C. crowd, displayed his explosive Muay Thai attack and landed hard leg kicks that appear to take its toll on his opponent. During a clinch, Easton delivered knees to the head and body that dropped Bloodworth to the canvas. A series of unanswered punches soon followed, prompting the ref to stop the contest at 4:52 of the second round.

In a crossroad bout between two lightweights, Canada’s TJ Grant (17-5) scored a controversial 3rd round submission victory over former NCAA All-American Shane Roller (10-5). It was an exciting tussle with both fighters securing dominant positions and making several different submission attempts. In the third, Grant went for a guillotine and transitioned to an arm bar that did not appear to be fully locked. Roller did not tap, but made a sound that convinced the ref Frank Yamasaki to stop the bout. The arena filled with a jeer of boos contesting the nature of the stoppage.

Two welterweight veterans made their respective return to the UFC, but it was Josh Neer (32-10-1) who came out on top with a stoppage win over Keith Wisniewski (28-12-1). It was a grueling affair between two experienced guys and neither guy wasted any time once the bell rang. Neer, also known as the ‘The Dentsist’ was the aggressor, throwing hard elbows and punches aimed at the head. Wisniewski retaliated hard at the end of the first round and hurt his foe with shots to the rib. Neer unleashed a relentless attack of elbows to the head in round two, causing cuts on Wisniewski’s both eyes, who began to bleed profusely. After the second round, the bout was stopped at the doctor’s advice.

Lightweight Yves Edwards (41-17) got back on the winning track, scoring an explosive TKO stoppage win over Brazil’s Rafaello Oliveira (14-4). Edwards landed a left hook that dropped Oliveira but was unable to finish. A left kick dropped Oliveira again, but this time, Edwards jumped in to land punches from the top, prompting the referee to step in at 2:44 of the second round.

Opening bout of the evening saw a bantamweight bout between Walel Watson and Joseph Sandovol. Watson quickly disposed of his foe with a hard right kick followed by punches to the head, earning the W at 1:17 of the first round.

UFC 135 Results: Jones Dissects Rampage in Four!

Hate him or love him, Jon Jones is here to stay. Proving the evolution of mixed martial arts, Jon Jones (14-1) established himself as the current and future of this ever growing sport. Displaying an array of diverse striking, defense, and grappling to complete tonight’s mission, Jones impressively retained his light heavyweight crown over the charismatic Quinton Jackson at the Pepsi Center in Denver, CO.

In the opening seconds, Jones crouched down and crawled, attempting to go for the single leg. Jackson, weary of his opponent’s grappling strength averted and tried to force a boxing contest. It didn’t matter however, as Jones’ freakishly long reach allowed him to strike from the distance, landing a variety of leg kicks from all angles to keep his stalking opponent at bay.

In the third, Jones was able to take Jackson down and secure a full mount, followed by devastating elbows to the head. Jackson was cut above the eye and looked visibly worn out. Jones, aided by his plethora of tools, had his way by the fourth round. Again, securing a takedown, Jones went for the rear naked choke, and successfully sunk it in, forcing the former champion to tap at the 1:14 mark of the round.

It was another flawless performance by the young champion, who has now dominated Rampage, Shogun Rua, and Ryan Bader in his last three outings. With the win, the twenty-four year old former junior college wrestling champion moves on to face yet another tough opponent in Rashad Evans possibly slated for early 2012.

Jackson (32-9) was humble in defeat, crediting and recognizing his conqueror as a great fighter.

Two welterweights collided in hopes to rebound from their disappointing losses in previous bouts, but it was Josh Koschek (16-5) who got back on the winning track, stopping welterweight legend Matt Hughes in the first round. Both wrestlers kept the fight standing from the start of the bell and Hughes seemed to have the advantage in the early going. However, Koschek, the former NCAA Division-I champion began to find his mark, repeatedly landing hard right hands to buckle the hall of famer. Hughes valiantly fought back and went for a knee, but fell down, which cost him dearly as Koschek jumped on him immediately to land unanswered punches to the ear and temple area prompting the ref to call a halt to the fight.

With another knockout loss, it’s unclear where the former two time welterweight champion’s career stands. In the post fight interview, Hughes, now 45-9, refused to announce his retirement.

The effects of the Colorado altitude clearly showed in the heavyweight slugfest between Mark Hunt (7-7) and Ben Rothwell (39-8), as two big men somehow finished the grueling battle in three exhausting rounds. Rothwell’s takedown attempts were denied by Hunt, the former K-1 Grand Prix winner, who was able to utilize his superior boxing throughout the fight. In round two, Hunt, who’s notoriously known for his lack of grappling skills, managed to force takedowns against his tiring challenger and also landed blows that cause a cut above the eye. The Super Samoan pursued for the knockout in round three and nearly pulled it off with several hard shots, but Rothwell, seemingly out on his feet, somehow managed to survive and finished the fight. Hunt won unanimously on all three judges’ scorecards.

Faded veteran and former Pride lightweight champion Takanori Gomi (33-8) suffered yet another loss, this time by the hands of Stockton’s Nate Diaz, who was able to outstrike his shorter opponent and then later finishing the living legend with a modified arm bar in the first round. Gomi , who hasn’t had much to offer since his arrival in the UFC, looked sloppy as he did against Clay Guida back in UFC 125 and succumbed to another submission loss. With the win, Diaz breaks his two fight losing streak and improves his ledger to 14-7.

This week on GFL COMBAT SPORTS NETWORK

– Friday, September 23, 2011 9:00pm ET featuring School of Hard Knocks Fighting Championship 14, Century Casino, Calgary, Canada. In the main event, Keto Allen (6-2) fights Andrew Buckland (13-8-1) in a welterweight championship bout in a battle of British Columbia natives. Allen is coming off of an impressive first round submission win in July and looks to add to his momentum with the bout against Buckland. Buckland is on a two fight submission win streak of his own. Buckland has fought all over Canada and his record reads like a “who’s who” of some of the top MMA fighters from the Great White North. With the HKFC Welterweight Championship on the line, expect these two gladiators to leave it all in the cage. Both guys have wins via TKO and submission and are well-rounded athletes, but it might come down to experience as Buckland has faced much tougher opponents throughout his career. This is a great matchup and what is sure to be a barnburner of a fight. In the co-main event, Charmaine “Not So Sweet” Tweet (0-1) battles Heather Martin (2-1, amateur record) who is making her professional debut. Tweet is coming off of a tough debut fight with Ronda Rousey who caused quite a buzz with her last fight in Strikeforce. For Tweet, the bout with Martin is another opportunity to showcase her overall MMA skillset which begins with her base, kickboxing. Tweet was also able to show some great scrambling in her previous fight so she is quite proficient in her standup and ground. Martin is no stranger to throwing punches and will look to mix it up with Tweet on the feet. Expect Martin to stand in the middle of the cage and throw punches in bunches. This bout could be Fight of the Night and should be action packed from the opening bell. Along with 5 pro bouts, HKFC is also a proving ground for amateur fighters ready to earn their stripes. The 10-bout amateur series will separate the contenders from the pretenders and build to the future for HKFC and Canadian MMA.

– Friday, September 23, 2011 9:30pm ET featuring Rumble in the Cage 44 from Lethbridge Exhibition Grand Stands, Lethbridge, Canada. The main event, Dan Chambers (16-16) fights Brandon MacArthur (5-17) in a middleweight bout. Both are veterans inside of the cage and have fought some of the toughest Canada has to offer. Chambers is on a two-fight win stream winning via TKO in Round 1 in both, and will look to carry that momentum into this bout and improve his record past .500. Look for Chambers to come out swinging and try to get another early stoppage. For MacArthur, he finds himself on the opposite side of the coin, losing his last two. Expect MacArthur to throw everything but the kitchen sink at Chambers in hopes of starting his own winning streak at Chambers’ expense. All of MacArthur’s victories have come via submission so if the fight gets to the ground expect MacArthur to try and isolate an arm, leg or the neck. In the co-main event, Jared Kilkenny (9-8) battles Moise Rimbon (17-9-3) in a heavyweight battle. Kilkenny is more of a banger, while Rimbon likes to strike but also has a great ground game, finishing two of his last three opponents with submissions. Kilkenny is the smaller of the two and should have better cardio conditioning going into the fight, so his game plan might focus on trying to wear out the bigger Rimbon. For Rimbon, he has fought a bevy of champions including Alistair Overeem, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Ricco Rodriguez. Expect him to use is experience advantage and try to overpower Kilkenny in the early going. Don’t blink when these two brahma bulls get in the cage. There should be fireworks from the opening bell.

In short, MMAX is developing a league of amateur teams coached by high-profile MMA coaches and fighters that will be sponsored by trainers/team owners. Regional squads will be added in the near future as the amateur league develops into a country wide recognized and established brand as MMAX will continue to stage exciting professional fight events featuring top names and athletes. The amateur league is designed to become a platform for young fighters to gain experience on their way to becoming professional fighters in mixed martial arts. The September 16th fight card is sure to become a fan favorite, as it is stacked with the best talent from some of the top gyms in Las Vegas. The Tapout Training Center, Throwdown MMA, Xtreme Couture, Wand Fight Team, Sunset Boxing & MMA, and others will be represented on the card. In the main event, fan favorite Cesar Campos (8-1) will battle the tough and rugged Rudy Morales (7-1) in an excellent match-up between two rising local stars. Tony “The Freak” Fryklund (14-9) made his pro MMA career way back in 1997 at UFC 14. The Militech Fighting Systems product ran his record to 8-1 to start off his career. In addition to the UFC, Fryklund competed in Strikeforce and Cage Rage during his career. The 6′ welterweight, never one to shy away from a fight, battled many top names in MMA, including Jonathan Goulet, David Loiseau, Brian Ebersole, Eugene Jackson, Matt Lindland, Ivan Salaverry, Thomas “Wildman” Denny, Duane “Bang” Ludwig, Cung Le, and Anderson “The Spider” Silva. – Friday, September 16, 2011 11:00pm ET featuring Ultimate Reno Combat 27 – Unequaled from the Grand Sierra Resort, Reno, NV. In the main event, Lightweight Champion Delorean “D-Lo” Heaivilin (7-0) will defend his title against challenger Brandon Ricetti (3-1) in what will be a hotly contest matchup of Ultimate Reno Combat veterans. Heaivilin is an undefeated grappler/striker who is a fan favorite among the Reno crowd for his fast-paced fighting style. All 7 of Heaivilin’s wins have come via stoppage either TKO or submission so he will look to continue that streak on September 16. For the up and coming Ricetti he will have to stay composed in the early going, and weather the storm that Heaivilin is sure to bring in the opening round. Ricetti himself is a proficient submission artist with outstanding hands and this should be a great battle for the 155 lb Ultimate Reno Combat Title. The Bantamweight Championship is up for grabs in the co-main event as Champion Brandon Frunk (9-2) defends against Rodney Canlas (1-0). For Brunk, this will be his first title defense since winning the title back in April at Ultimate Reno Combat 24. Brunk is on a 4-fight winning streak and looks to make it number 5 against newcomer Canlas who won by armbar in his only fight. For Brunk this matchup is more difficult than first glance because he will have a difficult time scouting Canlas and his tendencies, so Brunk will have to rely on his years of experience and cage time. For Canlas, he has the benefit of going into the fight as a somewhat unknown and will look to showcase his whole skill set in the title fight. In other action, Corey “Agnarr” Wyatt (9-2) fights Albert Townsend (0-3) in a battle of light heavyweights, while Jesse Romero (1-1) battles Lucas Davis (2-0) in a lightweight tilt.

– Sunday, September 18, 2011 5:00pm ET featuring Muay Thai 9 – Clash of Kings from Industrial Hills Expo Center, City of Industry, CA. The IFS will have two separate 16-man tournaments, one with MMA rules and one with Muay Thai rules. A combined 32 fighters will be fighting for an opportunity that only two will achieve; IFS Tournament MMA Champion and IFS Tournament Muay Thai Champion. This is an astounding number of fighters that will be competing for a championship under the IFS banner, and is sure to turn an up and comer martial artist into a full-blown superstar for the winners. Coming off of a highly successful IFS Elimination Tournament in 2010 that played to several packed houses, where fights took place in both a ring and a cage (giving the fans the best of both worlds), the IFS has decided to up the ante this year by promising bigger and better fights. In 2010 all six events were held at the world famous Knott’s Berry Farm in California. The Elimination Tournament was so successful with each event growing and getting bigger than the previous show that hundreds of fans were turned away for the finale. This year, the IFS expanded in many different positive ways one of which is promoting shows at larger venues to accommodate all of the fans for the 2011 tournament. The IFS picked up so much steam in such a quick time because the tournament-style format allowed fans to root on and follow their favorite fighter as they advanced through the ranks deeper and deeper into the tournament. The same way the NCAA March Madness always captures the attention of basketball fans every year, the IFS Elimination Tournament did and does the same thing with combat sports fans.

VIDEO: WORLD GRAND PRIX RECAP

Diaz back in, but will face B.J. Penn instead!

Nick Diaz must have done something right in order to keep his name on the UFC 137 roster. UFC president Dana White announced on Thursday via Twitter, stating that Diaz will now take on B.J. Penn, who was left without an opponent after his original foe Carlos Condit received the call to replace Diaz to face Georges St. Pierre for the welterweight crown. Despite the twisting turn of events, the main headliner and its co-feature still feature all four guys originally slated to compete. Stylistically speaking, some say that the swap might even lead to more entertaining bouts. UFC 137 will take place on October 29th at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, NV.

Nick Diaz pulled from GSP bout! Condit fills in as a replacement.

According to multiple sources, Nick Diaz has been scratched from UFC 137 and will not be challenging Georges St. Pierre for the welterweight crown. Diaz failed to show up to for the press conference in support of promoting the October 29th event, which led to Dana White’s decision in nixing the fight. It’s unknown whether or not Diaz would be cut from the organization altogether, but things certainly don’t look good for one of the premiere welterweights in the world today. Stepping in as a replacement is Carlos Condit, who is coming off a very impressive stoppage win over Korea’s Dong Hyun Kim back in UFC 132. Condit, who was originally penciled in to take on B.J. Penn on the main undercard of the event, now gets a title shot, hoping to become the first former WEC welterweight champion to win the UFC belt. That also leaves Penn without a dance partner and his potential replacement opponent has not yet been announced. On another interesting note, both St. Pierre and Condit share the same trainer in Greg Jackson.

This week on GFL COMBAT SPORTS NETWORK

– Friday, September 9, 2011 8:30pm ET featuring Ring of Combat XXXVII from the Tropicana Hotel & Casino, Atlantic City, NJ. The main event is really a 3-fight main event as 3 titles will be up for grabs. In one match, Bellator, WEC and IFL veteran Deividas Taurosevicious (12-5) will take on Strikeforce and Bellator vet Jose Santibanez (10-3) for the ROC Featherweight Title. These two 145 lb fighters are two of the top mixed martial artists in the world. The Renzo Gracie protege, Taurosevicious, has 8 victories coming by submission while Santibanez is the type of fighter who wears his opponents downs and grinds out decisive victories through decision. You can bet both men will be pressing the action with a championship at stake so fight fans are in for a real treat when these two warriors square off. In another main-event caliber fight, undefeated Al Iaquinta (5-0-1) fights Gabriel Miglioli (0-2) for the ROC Lightweight Championship. This fight is coming off the heels of a fight the two had earlier this year, where Iaquinta won via split decision. It was such a close fight, ROC decided to do it one more time, this time with the title at stake. Iaquinta is a Matt Serra trained fighter and a ROC veteran and looks to be a heavy favorite in this 155 lb title fight if you just look at the records. For Miglioli, the ROC brass obviously views him in high regard to turn around and book him in a title fight. Miglioli has an opportunity to pull the upset, defeat an undefeated fighter and win a championship all in one night. Certainly a lot on the line for both fighters and they will be up to the challenge. The final title that will be on the line is the ROC Light Heavyweight Championship when Tom DeBlass (4-0) battles Mike “No Joke” Stewart (5-2). DeBlass is out of the Renzo Gracie camp and has never tasted defeat. Stewart is a bit more seasoned and has fought through adversity so he should have the experience if the fight goes to the later rounds. Both men are heavy punchers and with 205 lb fighters swinging leather wearing 4 oz gloves, it could be a short night if one of their haymakers connects. Both men are also proficient from the ground and have also won fights by submission, so this fight should be exciting wherever it goes.

– Friday, September 9, 2011 6:30pm ET featuring Gala De boxe Pro-Am from Chapiteau Du CCSE, Montreal, Canada. Kevin Lavallee, is a young and exciting boxer that is extremely dedicated to his craft. A super-featherweight with an impressive record of 5-0-1, with 5 KO’s. In his last fight on August 5th 2011, Kevin had a spectacular KO win which has helped him continue to build a strong fan-base in his hometown of Montreal. Only one week after his last win, Kevin had the opportunity to join his coach Russ Anber and World Champion Sergio Martinez at Martinez’s training camp in Oxnard, California as Martinez began his preparation for his up coming fight with Darren Barker on October 1st in Atlantic City. Kevin was welcomed into the Martinez camp with opened arms and trained extremely hard and impressed Sergio Martinez and everyone in camp. It was after an early 5:30 AM run when Martinez named Lavallee, “Maquina”, which means “Machine” in Spanish. With these opportunities, there’s no doubt this will help pave the way for Kevin Lavallee’s future success. Kevin, a university student, grew up in Ste-Adele, Quebec, a small town 60 km north of Montreal. Kevin was just 9 years old when he developed a strong passion for boxing, not long after that Kevin had the opportunity to meet and later become a protege to the renowned coach and analyst Russ Anber. Russ offered his services to Kevin even though his time was heavily invested in Otis Grant and other pros at the time. Russ had a soft spot for Kevin as he too was originally from Ste-Adele, Quebec. With the support of his family, Kevin traveled long distances for his boxing training which showed how dedicated he was to learning. Kevin had a good amateur career and with the proper guidance from Russ Anber has allowed Kevin to have a great transition to the pro ranks. Only 20 years old, Kevin Lavallee has developed a slick, crowd-pleasing, aggressive style with lots of potential to make it on the world stage.

– Saturday, September 10, 2011 6:30pm ET featuring Casino Carnage from the Casino New Brunswick, Canada. This extravaganza will be a 7 bout professional boxing card that will feature co-main events. In the first main event, Jason “Friday the 13th” Douglas from Kitchener, ON will be taking on Frank White from Sarnia, ON for the vacant Canadian Cruiserweight Championship. The Ultimate Acquisition of Alistair Overeem

Was it only a matter of time or was this well planned ahead? A month or two ago, it sure looked like Alistair Overeem was going to forego his chances of crossing-over to the UFC and instead take his talent elsewhere (perhaps back to Japan). Well, as of Tuesday, news rapidly surfaced across the web citing that the former Strikeforce Heavyweight champ did indeed sign with UFC. And in what would be deemed a super fight for the ‘Reem, the long waited debut will take place in Las Vegas, against none other than the colorful Brock Lesnar, who is also eager to get back in the cage.

Assuming that all goes as planned, this is merely icing on the cake to what the organization was able to achieve in recently signing a multi-million dollar deal with Fox. Top guys Cain Velasquez and JD Santos are slated to collide in its debut for Cain’s heavyweight strap on November 12th, scheduled on the same evening as Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez III pay-per-view.

Going back to Overeem though, this is a bit of a Fedoresque scenario where this Yetti/Sasquatch type mythical monster not so familiar in the states have finally signed with the big boys. Overeem, although not as influential nor accomplished as Fedor Emelianenko in the world of Mix Martial Arts, hasn’t tasted defeat in nearly 4 years. Despite the eleven losses on his forty-seven fight ledger, ‘Ubereem’ has risen in size and evolved as a top threat to the heavyweight division. In addition, his success in K-1 kickboxing was monumental, which could easily attribute to many experts’ claim in acknowledging that the Dutch sensation is the best striker in the heavyweight division.

And unlike the recently humbled Emelianenko, Overeem is still relatively young and appears to be at the top of his game. Talk about a guy who bounced back from devastating losses, this guy has done it like no other.

Of course, everything remains to be seen when he actually steps inside the Octagon come December, but it’s not like the guy hasn’t fought in the states. After all, he is the inaugural Strikeforce heavyweight champion and has been with the promotion soon after its inception. And if anyone’s discarding the man’s star power and marketability, just look how much or little interest is left in the currently ongoing Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix, which by the way, is on Showtime this Saturday. As I’ve phrased in my previous column on Overeem, I think he’s a year or two late on becoming the biggest star in MMA.

From a financial standpoint, I’m not exactly sure if this was the best viable option. The current state of MMA in Japan, where Overeem had his success, is unclear. I’m not even sure when the next K-1 Grand Prix is supposed to take place. This in reality was a wise career move with greater incentives that also comes with greater risks. Overeem is a guy of many monikers, belts, and talents. He’s a bit of an enigma in the game of MMA, merely due to not having fought in the UFC. And many before him have failed. Just ask Takanori Gomi and Yoshihiro Akiyama for instance. But perhaps Overeem is of a different breed.

Where and how this journey ends is unknown, but it’s going to be worth watching while it lasts.

BERTO STILL BERTO, BUT MORE EXCITING

Andre Berto, whose fate was unknown after suffering his first loss a professional earlier this year against Victor Ortiz, was again setup for another easy payday against the European who was thought to have brought nothing more than a belt strap that many expected him to just hand over. Someone forgot to tell Dejan Zavec, who came with intentions of making his U.S. soil debut a success. From the first round, Berto came out guns blazing, but Zavec refused to wilt and dished back whenever he could. Many shots were fired and many if not most found their mark. What we got was an actual fight. Fortunately for Berto, Zavec suffered cuts on both eyes and was virtually forced to quit in his corner after the fifth stanza. Just like that, Berto wins his second world title.

Although it wasn’t an impressive performance from a technical standpoint, Berto showed no signs of regression or doubts since the loss to Ortiz. While many have criticized the Haitian for his rather easier career path to now two separate title reigns, he simply doesn’t get enough credit for producing excitement he’s demonstrated in competitive fights. He brings a lot of heat and intensity to the ring and is offensive minded. Even after getting decked by Ortiz in the first round, he didn’t shy away from a brawl and against Zavec, he re-emphasized his character as a fighter who simply comes to fight. I’m not sure if Berto can rectify his defensive holes and tendencies that could cost him dearly against better fighters, but take it for what it’s worth. He’s one of the more exciting fighters above the 140 pound division. If Tim Bradley ever gets resume his career, it’s a fight against Berto at 147, not Amir Khan, I’d like to see.

NATURAL ENEMIES IN AC

It’s your typical Ali/Frazier/Foreman scenario. Guy A beats guy B, guy C beats guy A, but guy B beats Guy C. This weekend in Atlantic City, NJ, former super bantamweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon has his chance to add himself to a forming rivalry. Back in 08′, I was at ringside when De Leon was trounced in less than ar ound against then top contender/prospect Juan Manuel Lopez. It was a rather shocking outcome considering De Leon’s usual toughness and endurance and I guess I was in the minority who thought his experience was going to prevail. He’s racked up a decent series of wins since before dropping a controversial decision to slickster Adrien Broner. Now he looks to be served as another ‘name’ opponent for rising sensation and unified featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa. A few months back in Puerto Rico, rugged veteran and former Gamboa victim, Orlando Salido derailed the potential mega-fight between Gamboa and Lopez, when he dropped and eventually toppled Lopez in a stunning upset. De Leon is also a veteran in the game and packs a very hard punch, but this is probably the first time he’s ever been this big of an underdog heading into a fight. I think this is an opportunity for Gamboa to shine in sheer dominance over his less dimensional foe, but a single right hand from the Mexican’s southpaw stance could surely change things a bit. Also on HBO this Saturday is the WBC heavyweight title bout between Vitali Klitschko and Tomasz Adamek. Not much to say here, but I’d be mightily disappointed if this fight wasn’t at least one hundred percent better than that hogwash of a ‘unification’ bout between Vitali’s brother Wladimir and David Haye. The semi-finals are set for the Strikeforce Grand Prix this weekend as Josh Barnett takes on Sergei Kharitonov and Antonio Silva takes on replacement Daniel Cormier in Cincinnati, OH. I know I’ve lost my interest since Overeem dropped out of this tourney, but I still think Barnett is a character with enough left in the tank to re-add his presence to the game. I certainly think he wasted a lot of time and potential in the past few years, but at least he’s back and back with vengeance. Either way, my picks for Saturday are Barnett via submission, Cormier on points in an upset. Feel free to email me at joony2j@gmail.com or any feed back or comments.

This week on GFL COMBAT SPORTS NETWORK

– Friday, September 2, 2011 9:00pm ET featuring Muay Thai Premier League from the Long Beach Convention Center, Long Beach, CA. In the main event, the WMC World Junior Middleweight Title (154 lb) will be at stake as Buakaw Por. Pramuk (197-21-12, Thailand) battles Warren Stevelmans (54-14-4, South Africa) for the prestigious championship. With close to 200 victories to his credit, Por. Pramuk is one of the elder statesmen in Muay Thai and his commitment and consistency to the sport is unmatched. He hails from the birthplace of Muay Thai (Thailand) and plans to give the fans in attendance and watching live on GFL.tv a highlight reel of authentic hard hitting and kicking Muay Thai fighting. His opponent, Stevelmans, is also a grizzled veteran in the sport and will not be intimidated by the living legend that is standing across the ring from him. Both fighters always push the action and look for a knockout but these men have trained their bodies to take an inhuman amount of punishment so fight fans could be in for a real treat if this fight goes the distance. Make no mistake, Buakaw Por. Pramuk and Warren Stevelmans will put on a show that will have the whole sport talking. In the co-main event, the WMC Intercontinental Junior Middleweight Championship (154 lb) will be on the line as Champion Baxter Humby (39-7, USA) defends his title against Zidov Domenik (55-25, Switzerland). Humby won the title in 2010 and has been on a tear for the last year, but he has never faced an opponent like Domenik who has a very high percentage of knockouts for this sport with 43 of his 55 victories coming by KO. In a sport that requires you to deliver vicious blows to your opponent, nobody does that better than the challenger, Domenik. The champion is in for a dog fight, but Humby should have the crowd at his back as he is fighting in his home country and will look to deliver an impressive victory to what no doubt will be a rabid crowd. In tournament action, Nathan Corbett (52-2, Australia) fights Tomas Hron (54-14-2, Czech Republic) and Filip Verlinden (37-6-1, Belgium) battles Martin Jahn (40-10) where the winners will advance in the heavyweight division. There are still four more divisions on this card!

– Saturday, September 3, 2011 6:00pm ET featuring Evolution Fighting Championship 7 from the Rahway Rec Center, Rahway, NJ. In the main event, Ben Syers takes on Caleb Solano in a long awaited showdown that has fans buzzing. Syers is reigning and defending Evolution FC champion and Solano is the man who wants to take his belt. MMA Promoter Steven Katz, who is also the Evolution Fighting matchmaker, is excited about this match up. “They’ve both been working their striking,” said Katz. “They’ve both been working their takedowns and takedown defense. As far as their training, as far as their striking to grappling, they’re both pretty much equally focused. Technically speaking, who has the better striking or who has the advantage in striking, that we’ll see Saturday night. They’ve both shown the willingness to step up and bang and throw shots. It’s a great fight and I’m glad it’s on my show.” In the co-main event, Mark Agnew was supposed to be fighting for the vacant 147 pound title against Dwayne Holman, but he’s out of the country and won’t be back in time. So Team Renegade fight Taylor Costantino, Syers’s teammate, has stepped up to take his place and challenge Holman. Costantino’s decision to fight has impressed Steve Katz. In the third title bout, this one for the 126 pound strap, Caleb Solano’s brother Ariel takes on Mike Colon. This match too is going to be a barnburner. “Both of these guys have something to prove in this fight,” Katz said. “So that’s going to be another great fight, 126 pounds, for that belt, which is vacant. And the contenders for that belt, I’ve got a lot of guys fighting between 130-135 pounds that can make 126.” 16 total fights are scheduled.

Silva flawless in stopping Okami; Shogun runs over Griffin!

Anderson Silva re-emphasized his standing as the greatest MMA fighter of the world, but he did so for the first time in his home country of Brazil. After twice dropping the highly regarded Yushin Okami in round two with a perfectly timed punch to the head, barrages of punches from the top soon followed, prompting the referee to call the bout to a halt. It was vintage Spider, who displayed his usual dazzling speed, cat-like reflexes and most importantly, his finesse and flash that just can’t be replicated inside the Octagon.

A performance akin to that of the middleweight champ’s destruction of Forrest Griffin, Okami was simply overmatched, unable to neither initiate any offense nor sustain any effective output. Silva extends his unbeaten UFC streak to fourteen and successfully defended his middleweight crown for the ninth time.

The co-main event in Rio featured Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua, who avenged his loss to Forrest Griffin in a rematch between two former light heavyweight champions. Shogun was sharp, creating distance to measure his striking. Griffin looked a bit listless and got dropped by a right hand to the head, allowing Rua to follow up with a series of hammerfists. The referee soon stepped in, giving Rua the victory at the 1:53 mark of the first round.

Former heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira revived his career in an exciting first round stoppage win over the streaking Brendan Schaub in a legend vs. up-and-coming contender type match up. Both fighters shared exchanges and the early going appeared to favor the American, who was able to stun the hometown veteran. The much more experienced Nogueira effectively used his clinch to push Schaub against the cage and landed a hard right hand that dropped his younger foe face-first on the canvas. It only took another hard shot to finish off Schaub, causing the ref to step in at 3:09. With the win, Nogueira gets back on the winning column, after suffering a devastating loss to current champion Cain Velasquez back in UFC 110.

In the other fights, Paulo Thiago bounced back from two consecutive losses to win in front of his home country against David Mitchell. It was a one-sided fight that saw Thiago use superior grappling and effective aggression to grind out a unanimous decision. Jungle Fight’s welterweight champion Erick Silva impressed in his UFC debut, quickly disposing Luis Ramos with an overhand right. After a quick ground and pound follow up, the ref stopped the contest at the :40 mark. The best fight of the night saw Rousimar Palhares and Dan Miller taking turns nearly knocking each other out before going the distance over three rounds. Palhares dropped Miller and relented after a short attack from the top, assuming that the fight was over. Palhares jovially got on top of the cage to celebrate before referee Herb Dean informed the Brazilian fighter that the fight was not finished. As the fight resumed, Miller recuperated and landed a devastating punch of his own, nearly stopping his foe all within the same round. Palhares dominated with a series of punches from the top in round two and secured the unanimous decision victory after three rounds.
