Miller stops Kassi after three

Jarrell Miller
Jarell Miller remained undefeated as he stopped Fred Kassi after round three of their scheduled ten round heavyweight bout at Rhinos Stadium in Rochester, New York.

Miller satrted to get to Kassi in the third round and had him in trouble on the ropes several times. After round three, Kassi complained that his hand was hurt and the bout was stopped.

Miller, 296 1/2 lbs of Brooklyn, NY is 18-0-1 with 16 knockouts. Kassi, 237 1/4 lbs of New Orleans, LA is 18-6-1.

“I knew it would take some time to get going tonight. I was thinking maybe three or four rounds to warm up and get going. But in the second round, I got my wind and I knew I hurt him,” said Miller, who is ranked among the top 10 heavyweights in three of the four sanctioning bodies. “My legs came alive and I touched his body and his head. I knew I was going to get the stoppage.

“I think he could have continued, though. He just didn’t want to. That’s why I take my hat off to Deontay Wilder. I still want to break his jaw, but he finished his fight with a broken hand. That’s what champions do. Kassi didn’t want to continue.

“Let’s talk about all these heavyweights. Tyson Fury, he doesn’t want this work. He’s always complaining. He’s always sick or something. I don’t know what’s wrong with him. Wilder, every five minutes he breaks another finger. Look, it’s just a matter of time before these guys are going to have to put up or shut up. Anthony Joshua, that’s going to be a mega fight. I am just begging for him to call my name.”

Kassi said, “I must have hurt my hand in the first round because in the second, every time I hit him I felt a shock. I wanted to keep going but he’s a big guy and I couldn’t use my hand. When you fight a guy that is 50 pounds heavier than you are, you need all the weapons.”

“The size difference and the strength difference was so enormous,” said SHOWTIME Boxing’s veteran analyst Steve Farhood. “Once Miller started rolling, it was clear that Kassi had no answers. Kassi had been nimble and he slid off the ropes a few times in round one. That was gone in round 2. So, perhaps in some people’s eyes, this win is cheapened by the injury, but to me it was clear that Big Baby was on his way to doing what more advanced heavyweights like Dominic Breazeale and Chris Arreola couldn’t do, and that’s stop Fred Kassi.

“Bottom line, Jarrell Miller’s stock went up tonight. He faced his toughest test and he passed it.”

Mason Menard scored a 9th round stoppage over Baha Mamadjonov in a scheduled ten round lightweight bout.

In round three, Menard was cut over his left eye.

In round seven, Menard dropped Mamaadjonov with a right to the body. Seconds later, it was another body shot that made Mamadjonav’s glove touch the canvas. In round nine, Menard landed a hard right that hurt Mamadjonov and after being seperated, he fell to the canvas and the fight was stopped.

Menard, 134 1/2 lbs of Rayne, LA is 32-1 with 24 knockouts. Mamadjonov, 135 lbs of Houston, TX is now 18-3.

“I feel great, but it was a B-level performance from me,” said Menard who is coming from a knockout-of-the-year candidate, “I could have done better. My opponent was an awkward fighter and we got him with two weeks’ notice.

“I knew if I kept putting the pressure, slowly he would fade and I would take him out in the later rounds and that’s exactly how it happened. He was hurting to the body. I knew after the first couple rounds he was breathing really heavy, so the game plan was to start touching him to the body. It was affecting him greatly.

“I’m definitely excited to get my second SHOWTIME knockout and I got some rounds under my belt. It’s been years since I went that many rounds, so it was good to know I can go that long and still finish strong.”

“I don’t really know what went wrong,” said Mamadjonov, who is known for his high boxing IQ. “It was short notice and I think I lost too much weight.

“I didn’t feel his punches, but he caught me with some good body shots. I was fighting evenly with him until the weight loss caught up to me and I got tired.

“I feel ok now. I’m good. I am disappointed but I’m fine. I’ll be back.”

Antonio Nieves and Alejandro Santiago battled to a 10-round split draw in a bantamweight bout.

In round five, Nieves was cut over the left eye from an accidental headbutt.

Each fighter took a card at 96-94 while a third card read even at 95-95.

Nieves, 117 lbs of Cleveland, OH is now 16-0-2. Santiago, 117 1/2 lbs of Tijuana, MX is 11-2-2.

Nieves landed 159 of 686 punches. Santiago was

“I thought it was close, but I think I pulled it out,” said Nieves. “I should have gotten the victory by maybe one or two points. But the judges see what they saw, you know?

“I do not feel I put on the impressive performance I was hoping to. I wasn’t at my best. He (Santiago) was a little awkward and my right hand was hurting a little bit, but I really don’t know why I wasn’t letting my hands go like I usually do.

“I learned I have to stick to my game plan and keep using my jab. I didn’t use it like I usually do. I need to just do what I do and not worry about what my opponent is doing.

“I don’t think nerves had anything to do with it, even though it was the biggest fight of my career. I was just letting him get off first. I should have followed my game plan, rather than react to what he was doing. I give myself a C for my performance tonight.”

“It was close, but I think I won the fight. I was always sure I’d beat him and I did. I landed more punches,” said Santiago. “I thought Nieves would be stronger than he was in there.

“I usually fight at super flyweight. I was coming up in weight to do this. It was an opportunity to open more doors for me and I took it. And I think that’s what I did tonight.”

Bakhtiyar Eyubov won a 10-round split decision over Karim Mayfield in a junior welterweight bout.

In round eight, Eyubov was deducted a point for a low blow.

Eyubov, 142 1/2 lbs of Brooklyn, NY won by scores of 95-94 twice while Mayfield took a card 95-94. Eyubov is 11-0. Mayfield, 142 3/4 lbs of San Francisco, CA is 19-4-1.

“I felt it was close, but I did everything I wanted to do and I feel I won nearly every round,” said Eyubov. “I was surprised by Mayfield, especially how hard his head is. He is a real man.

“My lip is a little swollen but that’s because of headbutts. Mayfield fought dirty in there. But I’m happy with the decision. I learned that I can go 10 rounds if I have to. I could go 12. I was still strong at the end of the fight.

“It was a good fight and he’s a tough fighter for sure, but I landed the harder shots and kept active. He was a tough guy, don’t get me wrong, but I certainly won that fight,” said Mayfield. “I feel I performed well. There’s always more work you can do, but for the most part I feel I did good. People thought for some odd reason the fight wouldn’t even go the distance, which is ludicrous. I won the fight though.

“It was part of my game plan to frustrate him and I feel I did that. I executed my plan well. Of course, there was more I could have done. I could have thrown more punches, but I did well.

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, two-division world champion Timothy Bradley has signed a two-year extension with Top Rank.

“We’ve had a wonderful relationship over the years with Tim Bradley, and it’s been a relationship that has been very successful for all of us,” Top Rank president Todd duBoef told ESPN.com. “Tim has been one of the pound-for-pound best fighters in the world for about the last 10 years, and he and [wife and manager] Monica [Bradley] have been wonderful partners. We look forward to continuing our great relationship.”

“It was strictly up to Tim,” Monica Bradley told ESPN.com. “He’s been with Top Rank for the second half and the most important half of his career, so why wouldn’t he stay? We’ve built a great relationship, and they’ve been good to him. Why would we go anywhere else? Top Rank has delivered everything we’ve worked for, and it’s only right to be with the right people.”

“We’re working on that now with Todd,” she said. “We were talking about a fight for Tim in the fourth quarter, probably December. But we’re not sure if that’s going to be possible. If it’s not, the latest it would be is in January. Start off the new year with a fight.”

It’s unclear whom Bradley will fight when he returns to action, but Monica Bradley said he is interested in a fight with former four-division titleholder Miguel Cotto, one of boxing’s biggest stars. Cotto intends to fight in December and is in need of a viable opponent for a planned pay-per-view card. Bradley would certainly fit the bill.

“That’s one of the fights Tim would like before he is done with his career,” Monica Bradley said.

“Maybe a fight with one of Haymon’s fighters is also possible,” Monica Bradley said. “Top Rank said it could be possible.”

WBC won’t punish Povetkin for PED Test

alexander_povetkin_image
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Former world heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin will not be punished by the WBC after his positive drug test before his since-cancelled fight with Deontay Wilder.

“As a result of his injuries and surgeries, champion Wilder is expected to be inactive until some time in 2017,” WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman said in a statement. “Deontay Wilder is confirmed as WBC heavyweight champion and will have the time to recover from his multiple injuries and surgeries. Wilder will retain his rights as champion, including the 70 percent advantage in case his mandatory bout needs to go to purse bid, once he returns to action.

“An interim championship is ordered between the two highest available contenders, No. 1 Alexander Povetkin and No. 2 Bermane Stiverne.”

Andrey Ryabinsky of World of Boxing, Povetkin’s promoter, viewed the ruling as a victory for Povetkin.

“We won,” he wrote on social media. “Povetkin has been vindicated, and must now fight Stiverne because Wilder is injured. I’ll still keep up the legal action against Wilder’s team.”

Ortiz – Ustinov to possibly land on Kovalev – Ward

Luis Ortiz
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, The WBA Heavyweight title bout between Luis Ortiz and Alexander Ustinov could wind up on the November 19 card featuring Sergey Kovalev and Andre Ward.

Vlad Hrunov, bidding on behalf of Russian promoter Andrey Ryabinsky’s World of Boxing, was the only bidder for Ortiz-Ustinov, winning with the minimum allowable bid of $600,000. Ortiz is entitled to 60 percent, meaning he will earn $360,000, and Ustinov is entitled to 40 percent, meaning his purse will be $240,000.

Hrunov told ESPN.com that the fight is penciled in to take place on Nov. 19 in Moscow, Las Vegas or Minsk, Belarus, where Russian native Ustinov lives.

However, Hrunov said there is a good chance that the fight will land at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and take place on the HBO PPV card headlined by unified light heavyweight titleholder Sergey Kovalev taking on former super middleweight champion Andre Ward in one of the year’s most anticipated matches.

Verdejo releases from Hospital

Felix Verdejo
Following his motorcycle accident last week, lightweight contender Felix Verdejo was released from a hospital in Puerto Rico, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“I have definitely learned a big lesson,” Verdejo said. “I’m not perfect. I’ll keep growing as a person and today I’m more committed than ever (to) my people and my career. I want to thank Puerto Rico and all the boxing fans for all the messages of support during this difficult time for worrying about me and for putting me in your prayers. Thanks to God, I’m ready to keep on fighting — with scars that will make me remember this learning experience.

“I feel more mature, focused and anxious to bring to my island the happiness of a world title.”

“A painful and costly accident that will hopefully provide Felix and all young athletes life-long lasting lessons,” said Carl Moretti, vice president of Top Rank, which promotes Verdejo. “We sincerely appreciate the support and love he has received from his island and the boxing community.”

Saunders off of Canelo – Smith card

Billy Joe Saunders
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, WBO Middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders will not be part of the Canelo Alvarez – Liam Smith card, due to turning down various opponents.

“I was working hard with Frank to make this deal, and it was going well, but Saunders is not going to be on the card now,” said Golden Boy Promotions Eric Gomez.. “We tried to make it happen. We offered him reasonable opponents, and he said no. We thought it would have been great to have Saunders and Canelo on the same card before a possible fight between them. But now we are moving on.

“Even though Saunders won’t be on the Sept. 17 card, we have not closed the door to still trying to make the fight for December. I’m not sure what else Saunders wants to do, but this was a great opportunity, and Frank knew it. Anyway, the fight with Canelo could still happen at some point.”

One of the opponents that Saunders turned down was Gabriel Rosado

“I signed my contract a week ago,” Rosado said. “From what I hear, Saunders wanted an easier fight. They didn’t want to fight me. The WBO champ [is] acting like a coward.”

Saunders’ response to heavy criticism for rejecting the various opponents came on social media.

“Don’t believe everything you’re told,” he said. “I’ll be in the ring very soon.”

“Yes, the fight is on. I have agreed to a Nov. 5 fight with reigning WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas,” Pacquiao said. “Boxing is my passion. I miss what I’d been doing inside the gym and atop the ring.”

“I miss my boxing routine of training, the things I do for my sport every day, but I assure my people my fight and training will not affect my work as a senator,” Pacquiao said. “My training — no problem. We will start early in the morning for my runs and gym training. There are no sessions or hearings in the senate at 6 or 7 a.m. They usually start earliest at 10 a.m., so I will be able to manage my schedule.

“My whole training camp with [trainer] Freddie [Roach] will be in Manila until the senate goes on break, and then we go to America.”

“Boxing is my main source of income. I can’t rely on my salary as a public official,” Pacquiao said. “I’m helping the family of my wife and my own family, as well. Many people also come to me to ask for help, and I just couldn’t ignore them.”

“I am happy to be scheduled to fight Pacquiao. He is a fighter that the fans respect and admire,” Vargas told ESPN.com. “That’s exactly what I want, and beating him will put me in that position. To prove that I am the best I have to beat the best and I plan on showing off my talent and ability inside that ring Nov. 5. It will be my coming out party. I hope that the fans really enjoy our fight.”

This has been a great year for me, and it seems to keep getting better,” said DeLoach, who has beaten undefeated opponents in his past two fights. “I’m looking forward to a great fight and heading to Las Vegas to handle my business. I’m fighting for my whole city, my family and my fans. I won’t let them down.”

Marcos Maidana retires

Marcos Maidana
According to Dab Rafael former world champion Marcos Maidana announced his retirement.

“After a long time out of the ring and after giving it a lot of thought since my last fight I’ve decided to hang up the gloves for good,” Maidana wrote in a letter addressed to “boxing friends” on social media. “Probably my decision would not surprise much as I had given hints of it in the last few months. But at this time I am making it official.

“Before anything else, I must say that I leave very proud and deeply thankful to boxing and everything that I have achieved. I’ve really never imagined getting this far when I put on a pair of gloves for the very first time when I was 15 in my native Margarita City. I think I was able to put the name of my country Argentina very high after winning two world titles, winning and losing against the best fighters of the world.

“I had a tough career and I fulfilled many of my dreams. I am a very happy man with my family and friends by my side these days. I know many of you think that I still have things to do and battles to fight. And I respect them. That is something that I had in my mind in the last few months. But only those who really know what a real challenge is, like the ones I always had, may understand that you have to be absolutely motivated to approach them.

“Only through a great physical and mental effort you can mix in the ring with best of the world if winning is your goal. And I always wanted to win. Today I do not feel motivated enough, do not have the fire inside me to intend to climb those mountains again. That is why I announce my retirement. At this time when I take a look back at my career I want to thank so many people that helped me to have what I call a successful career.”

“To my parents, Olga and Americo, to my wife Mariana, to my son Nahuel and my daughter Emilia, to all of them, thanks for standing by me for such a long ride,” he said. “Last but not the least, to my dear fans, who always supported and cheered me either from their homes or from the stands of all the arenas where I fought. I will never forget that chanting: ‘Chi-nooooo, Chi-nooooo!'”

“At this time I start a new stage in which I will remain close to boxing, advising and unconditionally supporting ‘Team Maidana,’ aiming for new generations to reach the highest levels,” Maidana said. “I will be there for our (featherweight titlist) Jesus Cuellar, for new great prospects like Brian Castaño, my brother Fabian Maidana (and) Alan Castaño, who are already making some noise internationally; for Javier Maciel. Also I will be there for the new kids like Neri Romero and Luis Veron. And most likely I will be there for many others who will join us along the road looking for great challenges. My goal is to pass the baton over to them now.”

Verdejo stable after Motorcycle accident

Felix Verdejo
Lightweight contender Felix Verdejo was injured Sunday in his native Puerto Rico after a motorcycle accident, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

“He’s being treated for head trauma and lacerations to the face, head and his whole left arm, and he is in stable condition,” Carl Moretti of Top Rank, Verdejo’s promoter, told ESPN.com. “They have him sedated.

“We are waiting for further details on his condition. There is no reason to speculate on anything. Our prayers are with him, and we are hoping he makes a speedy recovery.”

He was looking at a possible 135-pound world title shot in his next fight against England’s Terry Flanagan (31-0, 12 KOs) in a mandatory bout. The camps, which were ordered to begin negotiations last week, have until later this month to make a deal or a purse bid will be ordered, although that would seem to be up in the air following the accident.

Moretti said Top Rank and Flanagan promoter Frank Warren have been in the midst of negotiating the bout, which Top Rank was eyeing as the cofeature for the HBO PPV card headlined by Manny Pacquiao’s return from a brief retirement on Nov. 5 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.

“We were getting closer to the fight with Flanagan for Nov. 5,” Moretti said. “But at this point who knows what will happen. We are more concerned with Verdejo and his recovery.”

Juan Diaz wins another comeback bout, hopes for shot at fifth title

Juan Diaz
TUCSON – Juan Diaz remembers when he was younger. When he was busy. Real busy.

He was known as much for a whirlwind pace as he was for his nickname, Baby Bull. He threw punches at the rate of a propeller at take off. They were hard to see and often erratic.

It was fun. But not always effective. About a decade later, Diaz looks back and smiles at what has to look like a hyper-active, four-time champion.

“I don’t know if I could have beaten the Baby Bull who started winning titles,’’ he said. “But I could beat the Baby Bull who was fighting just before he retired.’’

An older, wiser, more patient and a lot more deliberate Diaz (42-4, 21 KOs) has emerged in his comeback. It continued Saturday night with a stoppage of Cesar Vazquez (27-4, 16 KOs, whose corner called it quits at 2:09 of the eighth round of a UniMas televised bout.

“I’m more precise than I was when I was younger,’’ said Diaz, who is 7-0 in his comeback. “I see things now that I didn’t before. I can see punches coming at me, almost like they’re in slow motion. I’m thinking, adjusting.’’

At 32, Diaz hopes his comeback has put in line for a shot at another lightweight title, perhaps against WBA champion Anthony Crolla or WBO champ Terry Flanagan. Both are from the title-rich UK.

“Let’s go to England,’’ said Diaz, who owns a a transportation company, JD Trucking, in his hometown, Houston. “I’ll fight them there. I’ll fight them anywhere.’’

On the Undercard
The Best: Alexander Besputin , a Russian super-welterweight trained by Robert Garcia, didn’t need much time to get the show started. Two minutes and eight seconds after first bell, Besputin (4-0, 4 KOs) landed a left hand for a first-round knockout of Kevin Womack (7-12-3, 2 KOs) of Baltimore.
The quick stoppage left Besputin manager Egis Klimas lots of time to watch Andre Ward against Alexander Brand in a tune-up for the Ward-Sergey Kovalev clash in November. Klimas also manages Kovalev.

Surprise, Surprise: On the first full day of the Rio Olympics, 2012 gold medalist Egor Mekhontsev was lucky to get a majority draw versus Alexander Johnson of Oxon Hill, Md. Mekhonstsev (11-0-1, 7 KOs) was staggered by a right in the third.

The Russian light-heavyweight survived the next five, but his unbeaten record sustained a blemish. He won on one card, 78-74. It was 76-76 on the other two. If Johnson (16-4-1, 7 KOs) had been his opponent in Olympic prelims four years ago in London, Mekhontsev might never have reached the medal stand.

The rest: Phoenix light-heavyweight Trevor McCumby (23-0, 18 KOs) stayed unbeaten, scoring a TKO of Dion Savage (12-10, 6 KOs), a Flint, Mich. fighter whose corner called it quits after the fourth.

Tucson super-lightweight Alfonso Olvera (8-2, 3 KOs) had one key advantage: He was bigger. His size added up to points in a unanimous decision—60-54 on all three cards over a shorter Jose Maruffo (8-5-2) of Phoenix.

Tucson super-featherweight Jesus Arevalo (2-0) won a majority decision over Manuel Lopez (1-2-1) of Phoenix.

Talks for a potential showdown between Miguel Cotto and Juan Manauel Marquez have fallen by the wayside in a discrepancy over what weight a proposed bout what take place at, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“A fight with Juan Manuel Marquez is not happening, 100 percent for sure,” said Bryan Perez of Cotto Promotions. “Maybe we can make it later on, but it will not be Miguel’s fight this year.

“Miguel wanted the fight, but it was all about getting a deal for the right weight. Financial-wise, there were no problems making a deal. Usually making a big fight, it’s financial when there are issues. That was not what happened with Marquez.”

“We are working on Miguel’s next fight with our [promotional] partners at Roc Nation Sports,” Perez said. “The Marquez fight was something Miguel wanted, but we couldn’t agree on the weight. They both wanted to fight each other. Miguel wanted 150, Juan Manuel Marquez wanted 147. Juan Manuel decided not to come up a couple of more pounds and we respect his decision about not coming up to 150. He’s a great fighter and a great champion. But 150 is where Miguel would feel comfortable going down to.”

Frampton decisions Santa Cruz; wins Featherweight crown

Carl Frampton
BROOKLYN–Carl Frampton wrestled the WBA Featherweight title from Leo Santa Cruz via majority decision in a terrific back and forth bout in front of a raucous crowd of 9.062 at Barclays Center.

The two stood toe to toe in many occasions that thrilled the pro-Frampton audience that made the trek from Ireland.   The bout had many ebbs and flows where Frampton seemed to jump to an early lead as he was consistently beating the now-dethroned champion to the punch.

Santa Cruz seemed to get his rhythm in  middle rounds and he worked himself back into the fight.  Frampton seemed to get his second wind in round ten and he got back to winning the exchanges in close.  The two brawled all the way to the finish.

Frampton of Dublin, Ireland won by scores of 117-111, 116-112 and 114-114 and is now 23-0,  Santa Cruz is now 32-1-1.

CARL FRAMPTON:
“It’s a dream come true. I had the dream of winning a world title and I won it, but I never thought I’d win in two divisions. It was a tough fight, I wanted tit to be a tough fight because I wanted a fight the people could remember. I respect him a lot. He was a true warrior.

“I had a good game plan. Shane was an unbelievable coach. He told me every time I came back into the corner that we could win this a lot easier. But I won it with my heart, not with my head and I got my hand raised.

“Distance control and hitting hard. I won the fight because I didn’t lose control. I earned his respect early in the fight with my distance control and hard punching. I would love to take this man to Belfast for a rematch and show the people there what a great fighter he is.”

On calling out the other champions at 126 pounds, Frampton said: “I want big, memorable fights.”

LEO SANTA CRUZ:
“It was a tough fight from the beginning. We knew it was going to be a tough fight, but I thought it was close when I’m in there throwing. Maybe the judges were hearing the crowd and thought that every little punch was scoring.

“He has a difficult style, but we know his style and get him in the rematch. The crowd was cheering, and I think the judges saw that. And maybe, without that, we would have had a draw or maybe a decision.

“It’s hard to get your first loss, but now we’ll go back to the gym, we’ll get the rematch and we’ll win. And that loss will mean nothing. I want to have a rematch in Los Angeles, but I’ll go to Belfast too.

Mikey Garcia returned off a 31-month layoff to drop Elio Rojas 4-times en-route to a fifth round stoppage in a scheduled 10-round super lightweight bout

In round two, Garcia dropped Rojas with a left hook to the top of the head.  Seconds later, it was a booming right that sent Rojas down face first.  He was able to survive that round, but two rounds later, it was deja-vu as a left hook sent Rojas down in the beginning of round five.  Rojas then ate a huge right hand that sent him down for a fourth time.  He was able to get to his feet, but the fight was stopped at 2:02.

Garcia, 138 lbs of Oxnard, CA is 35-0 with 29 knockouts.  Rojas, 139 lbs of the Dominican Republic is 24-3.

MIKEY GARCIA

“Two and a half year layoff sparked a fire in me and motivated me to do the best that I could.

“Elio is a tough guy and a former world champion, he didn’t come for a paycheck, he came to win.

“Elio took advantage of the opportunity. But we trained for a great performance like this and I was thrilled to get the job done. It felt great to be here with a supportive crowd behind me. I’m looking forward to getting back in there and winning another world title.”

ROBERT GARCIA

“I’m happy with his performance. He took a few right hands but it was his first fight back after a long layoff. Elio Rojas is not a nobody. You could tell he was upset about being knocked down. He was the perfect opponent for Mikey’s first fight back in the ring. I actually thought it would go a few more rounds.

ELIO ROJAS

“I was able to get off the canvas because I trained so hard. Mikey is just stronger. I’m a natural 126-pounder fighting above my weight.

“It was a great matchup and Mikey is a great fighter. I have no doubt that he is going to take over the division.

“I was very upset when the fight was stopped. I wanted to keep going because I have a champion’s heart and I never want to quit.”

Tony Harrison ended a dull affair with Sergey Rabchenko with a right hand in round nine that sent Rabchenko to the canvas and the fight was stopped after Rabchenko got to his feet.

The fight was a chess match that Harrison was winning up until final blow at 1:18

Harrison, 153.5 lbs of Detroit is now 24-1 with 20 knockouts.  Rabchenko, 153.5 lbs of Minks, Belarus is now 27-2.

TONY HARRISON

“This is definitely my biggest win ever. I’m thankful to my team for getting me ready.

“I was luring him to sleep. I kept jabbing and ended up in the corner. My trainer told me that I would have the right hand behind the jab and that’s what happened.

“I’m a finisher. I had him hurt and I said to the ref ‘you better not let him go.’ I knew I had him beat.

“I told a reporter this week that my biggest flaw is letting the crowd get to me. I was able to block it out tonight and stay focused.

“My camp was great. A focused Tony Harrison can beat anybody at 154-pounds. Now it’s on Jermall Charlo and Julian Williams. I’m in the catbird seat.”

SERGEY RABCHENKO

“I didn’t throw enough punches. I kept relying on my defense and didn’t attack enough. I was looking for one shot and it was difficult to do it against Tony Harrison with one punch.

“The ref did a great job with the stoppage. My health is first and foremost. The health of any fighter is the most important thing. I knew I couldn’t continue.”

Paulie Malignaggi won a 10-round unanimous decision over Gabriel Bracero in a battle of Brooklyn based welterweights.

Scores were 98-92 twice and 96-94 Malignaggi, 146.5 lbs of Brooklyn and is now 36-7.  Bracero is 24-3.

PAULIE MALIGNAGGI

“I knew Bracero was a counter-puncher like myself. I was just trying to be the sharper counter-puncher. We both try to set traps and I just wanted to make him earn any points thathe got. At the same time, I felt like I had to earn my points. I dictated the fight with pot shots and stepping over.
“I didn’t want to get desperate. I wanted to force him to get desperate from being behind on the scorecards. I think I did a good job of that.
“As the fight went on, I just used my movement and feints to stay in control. I noticed that every time he picked up his foot, he would have trouble setting his defense back up. I started taking half steps back and once he would come at me I would shoot a jab. It wasn’t super damaging, but it dictated my distance and frustrated him.

“The plan was to keep it simple. If he didn’t adjust to any traps, then I was going to keep using them. I kept it as simple as I could against a guy who if you complicate things, he will catch you. He’s a counter-puncher who can make you pay.

“I’m excited to call the fights tonight. I’m a fan before I’m a fighter. I’m excited to go to work right now.

“I’m going to head to Italy on Tuesday, take a vacation and then think about my future.”

Tevin Farmer won a 10-round unanimous decision over Ivan Redkach in a lightweight fight.

Farmer continuously made Redkach miss and look bad with wild swings, and Farmer was able to slide away and lot pot shots and every so often sit in the pocket and land quick combinations that befuddled Redkach.  Redkach was bleeding from around his right eye in round nine.  That was the same round where he was deducted a point for a headbutt.

Farmer, 134.5 lbs of Philadelphia won by scores of 99-89 and 98-90 twice to raise his record to 22-4-1.  Redkach, 135.2 lbs of Los Angeles is 19-2-1.

TEVIN FARMER

“I’m proud of my performance tonight. I worked hard in camp and my team did a great job getting me ready. I was very confident that I would be victorious as long as I executed the game plan and that’s what I did.

“I want a world title. I’m going to go back to 130-pounds and I feel like I’m ready for a title shot. If I have to fight an eliminator I will. I won’t back down from any challenge.

“I wasn’t worried about the point deductions. The referee does what he has to do. I was winning every round easily.

“I beat him down. I was the more experienced fighter and I came in with more rounds and with better opponents on my resume.”

Amanda Serrano stopped Calista Silgado in the first round to retain the WBO Featherweight title.

Roy Jones to face Rodney Moore on August 13

royjones2
Legendary champion Roy Jones Jr. will take on Rodney Moore on August 13th in Pensacola, Florida according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“I’m always excited to be fighting in front of my hometown fans who have shown me so much support during my career, and I am looking forward to giving them an action-packed fight,” said Jones, who last fought in Pensacola in March 2015, when he knocked out Paul Vasquez in the first round.

Whether Jones plans to keep fighting beyond the fight with Moore is unclear, but McGee Wright, Jones’ manager, said Jones wanted to fight at home again before he retires.

“He wants to end his career in Pensacola at some point,” Wright said. “I’m not saying this is his last fight, but he started here and he wants to end it here.”

Flanagan – Zlaticianin bout being negotiated

Terry Flanagan (640x360)
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, a unification bout between WBC lightweight champion Dejan Zalticanin and WBO beltholder is being discussed for a bout in October.

“I’ve had multiple conversations with Frank and with Showtime, which loves this fight for its ‘Showtime International’ series. They would love to take it (to air) from the U.K.,” said Zlaticanin promoter Lou DiBella said, adding that they are looking to put on the fight in October. “If we get this deal done, the fight would take place over there. Flanagan is very popular in (his hometown) Manchester. We’re getting close to a deal. We’re definitely close.”

“First of all, it’s a damn good fight, a very good fight,” DiBella said. “It’s a good fight but not an easy fight. These guys are two of the best lightweights in the world if not the two best lightweights in the world. [Zlaticanin] doesn’t care about going to Manchester. He’s like a Dr. Seuss book — ‘I’ll beat you here, I’ll beat you there, I’ll beat you anywhere.’ “

Chagaev stripped of Heavyweight belt

ruslan_chagaev
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, WBA Heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev has been stripped of his belt becausefhe and promoter Timur Dugazaev have repeatedly failed to pay $40,750 in sanctioning fees related to Chagaev’s majority decision victory against Fres Oquendo to win the vacant belt in July 2014 in Grozny, Russia.

In the WBA resolution stripping Chagaev this past Friday, a copy of which was obtained by ESPN, the organization cited its rule stating that failure “to comply with payment of applicable fees due” is grounds for being stripped.

“Additionally, failure of a promoter to pay all applicable sanction fees may result in suspension or revocation of privileges to promote or otherwise be involved with WBA sanctioned bouts,” the resolution continued.

“In light of Chagaev and his promoter’s failure to pay the full sanction fees due for the Chagaev-Oquendo bout after multiple demands and opportunities to do so, Chagaev’s recognition is hereby removed and he shall further be removed from the ratings. Neither Chagaev nor his promoter, Timur Dugazaev, may participate in or promote WBA sanctioned events.

“Upon receipt of the past due fees, plus applicable interest, Chagaev and his promoter’s privileges may be reinstated, subject to conditions, and Chagaev may again be eligible to be rated.”

After several attempts seeking payment “on July 7, 2016, the WBA’s counsel wrote to Chagaev and his promoter, Timur Dugazaev, making final demand for payment of past due sanction fees resulting from the Chagaev-Oquendo bout and subsequent litigation,” the resolution said.

“The deadline for receiving said fees was July 14, 2016, and the WBA received no such payment. As a result, Chagaev and his promoter are in breach of WBA rules and subject to sanction, including, but not limited to, removal of recognition and authorization to participate in WBA sanctioned bouts.”

Parker to battle Dimitrenko on October

Heavyweight contender Joseph Parker will face Alexander Dimitrenko on October 1st in New Zealand, according to Rafael of espn.com.

“It doesn’t faze me fighting big men,” Parker said. “I know if I put in the training, I know I can beat anyone in the world. … I think it’s important to go to the body and break him down.”

“We need to put Joe up against some big men,” Barry said. “There are big guys at the top of the heavyweight division. When you look at [world champion] Tyson Fury, when you look at [former champion Wladimir] Klitschko, when you look at Joshua, these guys are all tall. These are the guys we are targeting. These are the guys who hold the titles. These are the guys that dictate all of the big purses in world heavyweight boxing. So we need to go after them.”

“Dimitrenko is a guy who former world champion Shannon Briggs went out of his way to avoid earlier this year because of the risk,” Duco Events promoter Dean Lonergan said. “Even casual boxing fans know that all Eastern Europeans in the heavyweight division know how to fight.”

“We’ll focus on this fight, and after this fight there’s every indication that, everything going well, that we will fight another tall guy later in the year,” Barry said.

“Even though there’s something in the back of my head in Joshua, you still have to stay focused on what’s in front of you,” Parker said. “If you lose focus, that’s the fight you don’t get to. I want to stay focused even though we’re thinking about Joshua. This is another challenge.”

Wilder will have one more on his hand and one on his injured right bicep.

“They secured his hand so the swelling will go down and when it has gone down sufficiently they can go in and correct what needs to be corrected in another surgery,” said manager Jay Deas.

“We are trying to coordinate both surgeries at the same time so Deontay is not in a cast for three or four months while his hand heals and then needs to still get his biceps done after that,” Deas said. “Having them both at the same time is a way to cut down on the recovery time he needs.

“The blessing in disguise is that even though the hand surgery is much more complicated than the biceps surgery the biceps takes longer to heal. So Deontay’s hand will be well before his biceps, which will give his hand even more time to rest because he will have to wait for the biceps to be clear before he can use the hand. The hand will be better than it will have been in years.”
