Di Luisa: Groves is not the fighter he was

Andrea di Luisa says he’ll prove that George Groves is past his best when the Super-Middleweights clash at the Copper Box Arena in London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on January 30, live on Sky Sports.

The Italian is Groves’ first opposition since Badou Jack edged him out of their WBC World title clash in September in Las Vegas, with the Londoner looking to rebuild and land a fourth World title shot.

Di Luisa believes that the Jack fight – along with Groves’ two titanic tussles with Carl Froch MBE – has taken the best out of ‘Saint’ George – and he’ll stop the 27 year old’s latest charge for World honours at the first hurdle.

“I don’t believe George is the same fighter as he was before those fights against Froch and Jack,” said Di Luisa. “Only George knows how he feels. I can only comment from my point of view. On January 30 we will see how it goes – I do have a good punch.

“George is a good boxer, a good fighter. He’s had a few chances to be a World champion but hasn’t succeeded. He’s a good fighter and a hard puncher but I’m ready for anything. I’m going to London to win.”

Di Luisa’s clash with Groves as John Wayne Hibbert defends his Commonwealth and WBC International Super Lightweight titles against Tommy Martin.

John Ryder meets the ‘Brit Basher’ Sergey Khomitsky for the vacant WBA International Middleweight title while his gym-mate Martin J. Ward defends his WBC International Super-Featherweight strap against Italian Mario Pisanti.

Former football star Leon McKenzie continues his charge towards titles in the ring in a final eliminator for the English Super-Middleweight title against Kelvin Young and Brentwood’s Kris Agyei-Dua defends his Southern Area Super-Welterweight title against Chadwell Heath’s Ben Hall.

There’s a host of young talents on the bill with Watford Featherweight Reece Bellotti tasting eight-round action for the first time in the paid ranks, action for Brixton’s Lightweight banger Ohara Davies, Bermondsey Welterweight Ted Cheeseman, Crystal Palace Super-Middleweight Craig Richards, West Ham Super-Bantamweight Lucien Reid, Wimbledon Welterweight Louis Adolphe, Rainham Light Heavyweight Charlie Duffield and Chelsea Light Heavyweight Deion Jumah.

Haye to return May 21 in England

david-haye
Fresh off his 1st round obliteration of Mark De Mori on January 16, former two-division world champion is set to come right back on May 21 in London, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“After being out of the ring for so long it was incredible to be fighting in a (near) capacity crowd at the O2 arena in front of my loyal fans,” said Haye, whose Hayemaker Promotions will put on the May fight card. “I’m thankful for all the support I’ve received so far. I felt so cool and calm in there. I don’t believe any heavyweight in the planet could have taken those punches. Now is my time to prove they can’t.

“The heavyweight division is once again incredibly exciting, with a number of talented fighters vying for the world titles. The Hayemaker is back and ready for the next challenge.”

“David and I have been clear from his comeback announcement that it is with the single objective of reclaiming and unifying the world heavyweight titles,” said Haye’s trainer Shane McGuigan, the son of Hall of Fame former featherweight titleholder Barry McGuigan. “His first-round KO of De Mori showed there was no ring rust. We are keen to keep the momentum and build on his most recent win, with a short period of active recovery before going straight back into camp.”

Garcia decisions Guerrero to win WBC Welter Crown

Danny Garcia

Danny Garcia won the WBC Welterweight title with a hard fought 12-round unanimous decision over Robert Guerrero at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Garcia landed the harder shots with both hands as he gave ground from the charging Guerrero.  Garcia landed some flush shots but it did not deter Guerrero as he tried to make it an inside fight.  Guerrero wasn’t that effective as Garcia painted him with hard right’s and left hooks.

Garcia, 146 3/4 lbs of Philadelphia won by 116-112 scores on all cards and is now 32-0.  Guerrero, 146 3/4 lbs of Gilroy, CA. is 33-4-1.

Vasquez, 147 lbs of Monessen, PA is 21-0 with 15 knockouts.  Martinez, 147 lbs of East Los Angeles is 20-5-1.

Baby Steps: Jarrell Miller takes a big one

Jarrell Miller
TUCSON — Sometimes, even babies have to grow up.

Jarrell Miller, who calls himself Big Baby, began to gain some grown-up experience Friday night in a test of will and ability to go beyond a few rounds.

Maybe it was an initial step, but Big Baby began to walk with a seventh-round stoppage of a tough Donovan Dennis at Casino Del Sol on an entertaining card that included middleweight Rob Brant’s fourth-round knockout of DeCarlo Perez.

“For his development, this was important,’’ Miller promoter Dimitriy Salita said.

Good for his future, too.

Mostly, kept Miller (16-0-1, 14 KOs) in the conversation heavyweight conversation after Tyson Fury’s upset of Wladimir Klitschko in November. It’s a scrum, a crowd of possibilities and wannabes.

Miller, who has a mouth that matches the big in his nickname, thinks he knows whom the wannabes are. Just ask him. From Deontay Wilder to Charles Martin, he’ll name just about everybody in the division. It doesn’t matter that Wilder retained his WBC title last Saturday with an impressive stoppage in New York. It doesn’t mater that Martin got a vacant IBF title on the same Brooklyn card when his opponent suffered a knee injury.

“I’d spank Charles Martin,’’ Miller said before winning a minor title sanctioned by the World Boxing Association.

“If Charles Martin and Deontay Wilder still have a belt when I get there, then I’ll knock their heads off. I’m looking to get a title shot at the end of the year.’’

By the end of the year, any thing could happen, of course. Salita has his own vision for what could happen.

“In ten to 15 months, Tyson Fury,’’ Salita said. “Could you imagine that?’’
Let’s just say that the news conferences would be loud. Very, very loud.

For now, however, Miller has other business at the top of his agenda.
“He still has to build his brand,’’ Salita said.

There were moments Friday night when it looked as if Miller might have to rebuild it. In the earl seconds, it looked as if he would fulfill his promise of a second-round knockout. He dropped Dennis (13-3-1, 11 KOs) twice in the opening round. Dennis walked back to his corner, looking dazed and as if he would not be able to answer the bell for the second round. But he did.

Midway through the second, he somehow found the energy and courage to go back at the 274-pound Miller, who outweighed him by more than 50 pounds. He raked Miler to the body with successive shots and then with a couple of looping hooks.

Miller looked surprised. He had never gone beyond six rounds. But by the fourth, there were signs that he knows that he had to lose some of the Baby’s inexperience. Maybe, the Baby fat will follow in a subsequent fight.
But he dug down and slowly exerted his power. Late in the sixth, Dennis, bleeding from the nose and mouth, began to look tired. Late in the seven it was over. First, Miler landed a left-right combo that put him back onto the canvas. Then, Miller followed with succession of blows for which there defense from Dennis. Referee Tony Zaino ended it 2:31 of the round, a baby step for a heavyweight with big plans.

The stoppages continued with Brant’s impressive KO of Perez in a dynamic victory for a minor 10-pound title sponsored by the WBA. After dropping Perez (16-4-1, 5 KOs) in the third round, Brant (19-0, 12 KOs) uncorked a right hand that launched Perez and sent him diving through the middle of the ropes like human missile.

“I was shocked to see him go down like that,’’ Brant said. “Even when you hit someone really well, you don’t expect them to go out like that. I was watching him and thinking ‘I don’t think he’s going to get up.’ ‘’

BEST OF THE UNDERCARD
Brant might have been saying what Bakhtiyar Eyubov was saying after the first fight on the Showtime telecast. Never heard of Eyubov? He’s new to the American market. But junior-welterweight from Kazahkstan doesn figure to stay unknown for long.

Eyubov entered the ring wearing a white hat that looked like it could have come off the end of a mop. He smiled. He danced. He did a lot of things. But, mostly, he punched.

Eyubov put the show into Showtime before and after the fight. But for the two-plus rounds between his ring entrance and his celebration, there was power, a calling card that will make Eyubov hard to ignore harder to beat.
Jared Robinson (16-3-1, 7 KOs) had no chance.

Eyubov knocked him down 15 seconds after the opening bell. He would have been down a second time in the opening round if not for ropes that kept him upright . Early in the second, Eyubov sent to the canvas again. At 56 seconds of the third, it was over by TKO. But there was nothing technical about it. It was slaughter.

It was time for Eyubov to put the hat back on. It’s what Kazaks wear, his cornermen said. It was time to dance, a traditional Kazak dance.

Kazak power, too.

“GGG II,’’ said Salita, who looks at Eyubov and think about Gennady Golovkin.

NOTES FROM THE UNDERCARD
Demond Brock and Samuel Teah had to be separated Thursday at the weigh-in, but there was no separating the two 24 hours later when the hostilities resumed on the untelevised portion of the show.

At least, not on the scorecards.

Brock appeared to get the best of the quicker Teah, walking him down throughout eight rounds. In the closing moments, Brock (10-3-1, 3 KOs), of New Orleans, hurt Teah (7-2-1, 3 KOs) of Philadelphia, with an arsenal of rights and body shots.

But when the cards were announced, one favored Teah, 77-75. One favored Brock, 78-74. The third was even, 75-75. It was a draw. Boos said the crowd saw something else.

Another contentious weigh-in? This one screamed for a rematch.

THE REST

Featherweight Keenan Carbajal (9-2-1, 5 KOs), wearing white-and-red trunks that once identified the Phoenix family’s Hall of Fame junior-flyweight Michael Carbajal, survived a bruising fifth round for an unpopular majority
decision over hometown brawler Thomas Herrera (4-16-1, 1 KO).

Tucson junior-welterweight Carlos Cordova (1-0) had too much height, too much reach, too much of everything in overwhelming David Courtney (0-1), a Phoenix fighter who was on the canvas three times in the second and finished
at 1:55 of the round.

Tucson junior welterweight Alfonso Olvera (6-2, 3 KOs) left Colbert Lozoya’s face in misshapen mess of bruises, scoring a fourth-round TKO of the overmatched EL Paso fighter (7-12, 1 KO).

Johnson injures shoulder; out of contention for April Golovkin bout

Taureano Johnson
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, IBF Middleweight mandatory contender injured his shoulder and will not be available for a potential bout with world Middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin.

“Tureano will come to the States for a second opinion,” said Eric Gomez of Golden Boy Promotions. “But for the time being the fight with GGG is off. We will not allow him to fight until he is 100 percent medically cleared.”

Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler would like a fight with Canelo Alvarez in May, but that apparently will not happen.

“GGG and Canelo fighting in May would make a lot of sense,” Loeffler said, “but it would be up to the Canelo/Golden Boy side to do it.”

Verdejo to take on William Silva on Feb. 27 at MSG Theater

Felix Verdejo
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, undefeated Lightweight’s Felix Verdejo will take on William Silva on February 27 at the Theater at Madison Square Garden.

The bout will be the co-feature bout to Terence Crawford’s WBO Jr. Welterweight title defense with Hank Lundy and be televised by HBO.

“He’s big, he’s strong, he’s undefeated and when he fought on Felix’s undercard in Puerto Rico, after he knocked out Jargal he said, ‘I can’t wait to fight Verdejo,'” said Top Rank’s Carl Moretti.

They had talked about making the fight in 2016 at some point “but now it just happens to be their first fight of the year,” Moretti said. “I don’t think he is in any way in awe of fighting Verdejo. I don’t think he’s intimidated one iota. He doesn’t care that he will be fighting him in front of a Puerto Rican crowd.

“But if Felix Verdejo is the type of fighter we think he can be we expect him to be victorious. That said I haven’t come across an opponent as confident as Silva. He’s a legit guy.”

Golovkin in talks for Saunders unification bout

Gennady Golovkin
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin is in talks for a Spring unification bout with Billy Joe Saunders.

“We made a significant offer to Frank Warren as it is still GGG’s priority to unify all the middleweight titles,” Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler told ESPN.com. “The unification fight with Billy Joe Saunders would be at the top of the list for the next fight. They are interested but no response yet.”

“Saunders just had a big win over Andy Lee, and this fight would generate a lot of worldwide interest,” Loeffler said.

“We have been in communication with Gennady Golovkin’s people, who have approached us with a firm offer of a unification fight with Triple G,” said Saunders’ promoter Frank Warren. “I know Billy Joe has intimated he may not be quite ready for this, but money talks louder than anything in boxing and such are the sums involved it is one certainly worth considering.

“We will be sitting down to talk about the future with Billy Joe once he has enjoyed his break. He has some really tasty options out there, and whatever happens we will come up with something really special.”

“Madison Square Garden is very interested in bringing back GGG as he is the first one to completely sell out MSG for a while for boxing,” said Loeffler, who was referring to the capacity crowd of 20,548 that Golovkin drew for the fight with Lemieux. “Texas [venues are] also very interested in hosting a GGG fight there for the first time and, naturally, The Forum in L.A.”

Pacquiao – Bradley III is on for April 9

Pacquiao_Mayweather_weighin_150501_001a
Manny Pacquiao will take on Timothy Bradley in a rubber match on April 9th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“[Pacquiao adviser] Michael [Koncz] cleared everything with Manny and we sent out the advance money to seal the deal,” said Top Rank promoter Bob Arum.

“I already looked at it. I don’t believe in waiting,” said Bradley’s trainer Teddy Atlas. “When this fight was first discussed, I looked at it and I see what I should see and I see why Pacquiao was able to be effective and why Tim was able to be effective at the times when he was effective.”

Arum said he knew that many boxing fans would be a react negatively to the fight, but said, “This is a different Timothy Bradley under the aegis of Teddy Atlas,” Arum said. “This is not me just saying that. The Bradley that fought Rios, whatever you thought about Rios, was a different fighter. It’s still Bradley, but a new Bradley with Teddy. And at this point of his career, can Manny handle that? Remember, Manny is also coming off an injury.”

“Anyone who has watched me on ESPN for nearly 20 years knows I’m not one to throw out superlatives unless I believe them, but Pacquiao is one of the best fighters of the last decade,” Atlas said. “It’ll be a tough challenge, but we’ll make sure we’re ready for [it]. We will respect the challenge Pacquiao presents. We will do what we’re supposed to do and be 100 percent prepared. It will be a difficult fight.”

Arum is already licking his chops to promote the fight, in part, as a battle between Atlas and Freddie Roach, Pacquiao’s Hall of Fame trainer and seven-time trainer of the year. Atlas and Roach don’t particularly care for each other, and Arum is banking on some trash talk between the cornermen to help sell the fight.

“If that’s what people are looking to see, they’ll see shadowboxing,” Atlas said. “They’ll see Freddie by himself. I have no interest in that. This is about Timmy and about winning the fight. That’s all it’s about for me. It’s about Timmy, not about me and Freddie.”

“I am not going to position this as his last fight,” Arum said. “It may very well be his last fight, but I won’t put myself in the position of selling it as his last fight and then he decides he wants to fight again and I look like a schmuck. I’m not sure it is his last fight, despite what he told me.”

“The reasoning was they didn’t think Khan would resonate on pay-per-view in the United States,” Arum said. “While people in the boxing community know him, he wasn’t well known by the public in the United States. In England, sure. There was no contest that he would be bigger business over there. But the bulk of the money is in the United States pay-per-view.

“And they felt that Crawford was a great fighter but that even though the boxing fans knew him, the public at large hadn’t heard of him. They thought Bradley, coming off the victory over Rios and the fact that he looked like a new fighter under Teddy Atlas, would do very well on pay-per-view.”

“At that point, we directed our efforts on making the match between Pacquiao and Bradley,” Arum said. “[Top Rank president] Todd [duBoef] worked with Monica Bradley [Timothy’s wife and manager] on the terms, and he’s satisfied. And the paperwork is being generated now.

“We also gave Pacquiao all the information we received from the TV companies and the MGM, and he made the choice.”

Pedraza to defend 130 lb against Smith on March 26

Jose Pedraza will defend the IBF Jr. Lightweight title against Stephen Smith in New York on March 26, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

So it will be a pleasing fight. Pedraza is a quality fighter, but Stephen Smith is an extremely live mandatory challenger.”

“The Smith family has had quite a year, with Liam winning a world title and Callum winning the British title,” DiBella said. “So I am quite sure Stephen is going to be highly motivated and very confident against Pedraza.
