According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Danny Garcia relinquished his WBC Super Lightweight championship.

“Danny’s weight situation forced his decision to fight at welterweight,” the WBC said.

Said Carl Moretti, vice president of Top Rank, Postol’s co-promoter, “Obviously we’re not shocked by what happened with Garcia. We knew Danny Garcia was never going to defend his title again. We look forward to making the fight with Matthysse. It’s a great fight stylistically and we’ll get a deal done as soon as possible. It’s a really interesting fight.”

Shumenov injured; Fight with Flores postponed

An injury to Beibut Shumenov has forced a postponement of his WBA Interim Cruiserweight title fight that was slated to take place next Saturday in Las Vegas, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

Flores was disappointed but said he will remain in training camp in Phoenix and be ready for the new date. He has been sparring with heavyweight contenders Steve Cunningham and Bryant Jennings for the past two weeks in preparation.

“I had over 40 rounds sparring with those two guys and another 25 rounds [with others] before that,” Flores told ESPN.com on Tuesday. “I’ve been working crazy hard. I was more than ready for June 20. I was very ready. Steve and Jennings are great tools to get ready for big fights. They are both much better than Beibut. Great camp so far.”

Referee Frank Cappuccino passes at age 86

Legendaty referee Frank Cappuccino passed away on Monday at age 86 in Pennsylvania, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“When he was in his prime, there is no doubt he was one of the top five referees in the world,” said Greg Sirb, the executive director of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission, who knew Cappuccino well and assigned him to the fights he worked in the state since 1989.

“When he was reffing, he was poetry in motion,” Sirb said. “He had as much respect from the fighters as any referee there is. I just think they liked his style. He was straightforward. When you got Frank Cappuccino assigned to your bout, you knew you made it.”

“When you had Cappuccino, it was one less thing I had to worry about,” Sirb said. “Of all the times I assigned him to a fight, I never once had a single person call me to say they didn’t want him assigned to their bout. It never happened.”

“That was Frank, Philly-style,” Sirb said. “He was a die-hard Philly guy. He loved boxing. I’d ask Frank to do the little shows — make that three- or four-hour drive to the places like Allentown or Scranton for shows. He was there. He did all the club shows as well as the world title fights.”

“Soto is not going to fight,” said Golden Boy Promotions Eric Gomez. “He messed up his knee jogging on Tuesday. He was training. He got X-rays and he has strained knee ligaments, and the doctor told him he needs to rest it for a month.”

“It’s shocking. This guy can’t catch a break,” Eric Gomez said of Soto. “First, there was the Frankie Gomez situation, then Ray Beltran and now this. When bad news happens, it comes in threes. It was like 1-2-3 strikes, you’re out.”

Beltran tests positive for banned substance; fight with Soto off

April 27, 2013 Austin, TX - Frank Erwin CenterUniMas TV
Ray Beltran tested positive for a banned substance after his May 1 knockout win over Takahiro Ao and his June 27 bout with Humberto Soto is off, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“Just disappointed. I’m disappointed for Beltran and I’m disappointed for us, but eventually fighters are going to learn not to try to cheat the system,” Carl Moretti, vice president of Top Rank, Beltran’s promoter, told ESPN.com. “I feel worse about it that it happened to [Ao promoter] Mr. [Akihiko] Honda and our friends from Teiken Boxing and that their fighter, Ao, was hurt by all this.”

“I talked to Ray and he doesn’t think he took anything illegal,” Cameron Dunkin, Beltran’s manager, told ESPN.com. “I asked him if he had been taking any pills and he said he took some supplements he was given by his guys, but he didn’t think they had anything [illegal] in them. I’m getting a list of what he was taking.

“He’s devastated about the Soto fight. Who wouldn’t be? He feels betrayed by somebody who was working with him, but he doesn’t know by who. He has three different guys who work with him but somebody really let him down. Someone didn’t look out for him. This is terrible. There’s nothing else to say.”

BoxingScene first reported the positive test

Moretti said one possible opponent is Jose Felix Jr. (29-1-1, 24 KOs), 23, of Mexico, a Top Rank boxer who is training for a June 13 UniMas-televised bout, but has no opponent yet.

HBO said it plans to keep Soto on the telecast. It is the second fight in a month that has been canceled on Soto, through no fault of his own. The reason HBO found a spot for him on June 27 was because his fight against Frankie Gomez on May 9 at Minute Maid Park in Houston — the co-feature of Canelo Alvarez-James Kirkland — was canceled the day before the bout because Gomez was 6½ pounds overweight at the weigh-in, which cost Soto a low six-figure payday.

The fight was a back and forth fight early as surprisingly Algieri fought out of his norm as was the stalker. He has some solid success as he landed some hard rights and left hooks in between Khan’s flurries. The bout seemned even at the halfway point.

AMIR KHAN

“I thought I worked well inside. I’ve never done a lot of work in the pocket like that and I plan to do more of that in the future.

“I give Chris a lot of credit. He came forward a lot more than we thought he would and he had a big chin tonight.

“Chris gave it his all tonight. This is the best Algieri we’ve seen in a long time, and if he’d have fought Manny (Pacquiao) that way he might have won.

“Everyone knows I want Floyd (Mayweather) next after all the talk about it, but when you wait and hope for something for this long it can set you back. I don’t want to overlook any other fighters, including Chris.

“My first show with PBC has been great. The New York crowd was awesome and really got into it. The promotion was excellent and I’m proud to be a part of this team.”

CHRIS ALGIERI

“I thought I pressured Khan well and got my touches. He definitely didn’t like it when I got into his body.

“I thought I hurt him several times, but Khan’s a cagey fighter and he spins off. I guess the judges liked that tonight. I would think the cleaner, harder shots would get a little more respect.

“I think PBC is fantastic. The focus is on the fighters, not the politics or the promoters. This is helping bring the sport back to boxing’s glory days of primetime events for the fans.

“I haven’t thought much about after this fight. I’m disappointed, but I’ll watch the film from this fight and we’ll go from there.”

JAVIER FORTUNA

“I’m very surprised that the fight went the distance. Vasquez is a strong fighter. After the fifth round, I was boxing to score points.

“I was never really hurt by Vasquez, but I hurt my own hand on his head.

“Vasquez didn’t really affect me throughout the fight. The swelling on my eye is from a headbutt.

“The biggest key to my success tonight was my training. Before this I didn’t have the stamina that I needed. However, after my work with Hector Bermudez leading up to this fight I was more than ready.

“Becoming a champion here in New York is huge for me. I’m very proud of my performance tonight.”

BRYAN VASQUEZ

“My style is to box and then move. Fortuna fought a smart fight tonight. He wouldn’t engage me and fight.

“Fortuna used his head and elbows a lot tonight, but I don’t want to use that as an excuse. I tried telling the referee, but nothing was done.

“I worked very hard for three months of training to get to this fight. I hope I won over some fans today because I fight to please them.

“Hopefully I get a rematch because this is not the end of my career, and I’d love the chance to take that belt from Fortuna.

“I want to thank PBC for this opportunity. It was great being a part of this show and I hope they’ll think of me again in the future.”

“We’re excited about the fight. It should be a fun fight. Both guys are exciting fighters,” said Golden Boy vice president Eric Gomez, who negotiated the bout with Moretti. “Peter Nelson took it upon himself to tell Soto they would have him back on after what happened with Frankie. “Ik Yang’s fight will be the main event. Why? Because he’s Chinese and beloved by the president of China,” said Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said of Yang, who will be fighting for the fifth time at the Cotai Arena. “There is no (Chinese star) Zou Shiming or Manny Pacquiao on this card. Ik Yang is the attraction.”

“Donaire is taking things seriously now I think and hopefully he makes a recovery from the knockout at the hands of Nicholas Walters, who was too big for him,” Arum said. “We think he can win another title.”

Flanagen to battle Zepeda for Lightweight bout

Terry Flanagen will battle Jose Zepeda for the vacant WBO Lightweight title on July 11 in Manchester, England according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“I’ve delivered Terry his world title shot on home soil,” Warren said. “He’s now got all the home advantages, and he has to translate that in the ring and beat Zepeda, who will certainly give Terry plenty to think about with that huge knockout punch he carries.”

“It’s a dream to fight for the world title on my own doorstep and it will be an electric atmosphere on the night at the Velodrome,” Flanagan said. “I’d have fought Zepeda anywhere because to get a world title fight has been my dream since first putting on the gloves, but my promoter, Frank Warren, has really pulled out all the stops to get me my chance in my backyard as he believes in me and I’ll repay that faith by becoming world champion.”

“Zepeda can certainly punch,” Flanagan said. “He’s stopped nearly all of his opponents, with the majority coming inside three rounds. It’s not just about being able to punch at this level though. What happens when I start dragging him into the later rounds, and he’s going into uncharted territory? Can he cope with the pace I’m going to set?

“These are all questions he’s going to be asked of him and, remember, I can bang as well. I’m not saying it’s going to be an easy fight. It’s the biggest and hardest night of my life and I’m going to train and prepare for this like never before and do everything I can to win that belt.”

Benavidez fulfills guarantee, stops Paez

By Norm Frauenheim (ringside)
PHOENIX, Ariz. – Jose Benavidez Jr. celebrated a birthday and a homecoming.

It was all part of the guarantee.

In a bold promise at a news conference, Benavidez Jr. promised that his WBA interim 140-pound title would not leave his hometown.

It didn’t.

It is still interim, whatever that means. But the guarantee proved to be as good as his word.

Benavidez kept it in his first defense Friday night with a 12th-round stoppage of Jorge Paez Jr. in a truTV bout at US Airways Center.

It was a solid win for the unbeaten Benavidez on his birthday. He went 23-0 on the day he turned 23.

He did so with his 16th stoppage, a short left hand that lifted Paez up and then onto the canvas. Paez scrambled to his feet. But he was as unsteady as a kid trying to walk on a trampoline. When he stumbled into the ropes, referee Raul Caiz Jr. ended at 21 seconds of the final round.

“I knew I would beat him,’’ said Benavidez (23-0, 16 KOs), who also floored Paez (38-6-2-1, 23 KOs) with right uppercut to the body in the third round. “I mean, there was no way I was going to lose my title in my hometown. No way, no way at all.

“But I have to say that Paez was really, really tough. Man, he can take a punch. I didn’t think there was any way he’d get up after that knockdown in the third. But there he was, up on his feet and coming back at me.’’

Paez, whose dad was a flamboyant featherweight champion and a clown in the Mexican circus, never saw the final punch coming. It landed, he said, when he turned his head after sustaining an inadvertent thumb to an eye.

Benavidez often fought off the ropes, which was a tactic he used in controversial decision over Mauricio Herrera for the title last December in Las Vegas.

“I wanted to tire him out,’’ Benavidez said. “I figured that if I could do that, I’d knock him out in a later
round.’’

The 6-foot Benavidez didn’t know how much longer he would stay at 140 pounds.

“I’m kind of big to be at 140,’’ he said. “But we’ll see. I’m willing to fight anybody at 140 or 147.’’

He has talked about Jessie Vargas, who fights Timothy Bradley on June 27. Bradley had a ringside seat as as a truTV analyst.

“Jose looked great,’’ Bradley said. “Yeah, he fights off the ropes. But he’s good at it. He’s very precise at what he does, especially with his punches’’

In the first bout on a truTV doubleheader , Antonio Orozco, a junior welterweight from San Diego, lived up to the nickname written in gold across his dark trucks throughout a unanimous decision over Emmanuel Taylor. Relentless summed up the pace and style of a stubborn, often deliberate attack sustained by Orozco (22-0, 15 KOs), who won a 96-94, 98-92, 96-94 on the scorecards.

Taylor (18-4, 12 KOs), of Baltimore, was at his best when he worked his stinging jab. But he didn’t work it enough.

Blood above Orozco’s swollen right eye appeared after the eighth round. By then, however, it was too late for Taylor to overcome the well-conditioned Orozco, who stayed on his toes and protected his advantage on the cards with a fundamental execution of body blows.

On the Undercard
The Best: It was delivered by Trevor McCumby, an unbeaten light-heavyweight who lives in Phoenix. McCumby (19-0, 150 KOs) threw a knockout left at 42 seconds of the second round with deadly accuracy and impact. Fabiano Pena (11-2-1, 8 KOs), of Brazil, was out before he landed flat on his back in a concussive crash that echoed like a backboard-shattering slam-dunk throughout the NBA arena.
The Rest: Phoenix light-heavyweight David Benavidez (9-0, 8 KOs), Jose Benavidez’ 18-year-old brother, scored a first-round knock down and finished the job in the second with a left that stopped Mexican Ricardo Campillo (9-8-1-1, 7 KOs) at 1:21 of the round; Arizona City super-lightweight Abel Ramos (12-0-2, 7 KOs) got the show started with a bang, landing a crushing left for a third-round KO of Angel Martinez (12-6-1, 8 KOs) of Mexico; Phoenix super-bantamweight Carlos Castro (8-0, 3 KOs) fought at a whirlwind pace, scoring often for a unanimous decision over a busy Victor Serrano (4-9-1, 1 KO) of Mexico.
