Pacquiao to get $20 million guarantee for Bradley rematch

Pacquiao_GrandArrival_140408_008a
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Manny Pacquiao is set to earn a guarantee of at least $20 million with a chance for an upside in his Pay Per View fight this Saturday night against Timothy Bradley.

Their official purses for their rematch on Saturday night (HBO PPV) at the MGM Grand are $6 million apiece, according the contracts filed with the Nevada State Athletic Commission. However, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told ESPN.com on Wednesday that Pacquiao is guaranteed a minimum of $20 million, much of which will be paid out in the weeks after he collects the $6 million check on fight night.

Both boxers, according to Arum, also will earn upside depending on how well the pay-per-view performs, and Arum said he believes it will exceed 1 million buys. He said he is basing that figure on anecdotal information he has received from HBO PPV executives. The first Pacquiao-Bradley fight in June 2012, which Bradley won by extremely controversial decision to claim a welterweight world title, generated 890,000 pay-per-view buys and more than $50 million in revenue.

The other purses for the bouts that will be televised on the pay-per-view broadcast:

• Lightweight Raymundo Beltran will earn $85,000 and last-minute replacement opponent Arash Usmanee will receive $80,000 in the co-feature.

• Junior welterweight titlist Khabib Allakhverdiev will make $250,000 and challenger Jessie Vargas is getting $90,000.

• Interim junior lightweight titleholder Bryan Vasquez will get $55,000 and challenger Jose Felix Jr. will make $40,000.

Alvarez looking for Lara bout for July 12

Canelo Alvarez
Canelo Alvarez will be looking for a July 12 Pay Per view dance partner and the man he is targeting is Erislandy Lara according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“When I met with Canelo last week, we discussed the date, the site and different opponents, and two of those have been resolved,” said Golden Boy Promotions Richard Schaefer. “Canelo feels very comfortable fighting at the MGM. So we have the date and venue locked in and then we had to look at opponents.

“Canelo made it clear that his first choice is Lara because a lot of people, fans and media, feel he would be afraid of fighting somebody with the skills of Erislandy Lara, the same way people thought he wouldn’t fight Austin Trout. And you saw what happened.”

“Canelo thinks Floyd is the champion. Floyd beat Canelo and Canelo thinks Floyd is the champion, so how can Lara be a champion,” Schaefer said. “So Canelo doesn’t want it for a title so it won’t be a title fight, but if Lara wants to defend the title he can pay the sanction fees. But Canelo said he doesn’t want to fight for the title.”

“A lot of people feel Lara is the best at 154 pounds after Floyd,” Schaefer said. “Canelo said, ‘That’s the guy I want.’ I presented other names to him. He didn’t say yes and he didn’t say no. But he kept saying, ‘Get me Lara. That’s what my fans want to see.’ So I have begun negotiations with Team Lara. I’ve been working on it with [Lara adviser] Al [Haymon] and we have made an offer. We are going back and forth and my hope would be the negotiation could be concluded swiftly. We’re a little bit apart but if everyone will give a little bit we can get this done.

“I think it’s a very interesting fight. Lara is very skilled fighter. So is Trout and you saw how Canelo did with Trout, but Lara is a bit better than Trout.”

“Canelo would like to do a media tour,” he said. “When you have more time to promote, you can do a bigger tour. He liked the media tour we did with Mayweather and the big crowds. He loves to embrace his fans and mingle with his fans and so he definitely would like to do a big press tour.”

“We are talking about what we want to do,” Schaefer said. “Would we pull him out to have him ready for the promotion? That’s part of the negotiations and discussions. I can’t tell you what’s going to happen because I don’t have it done. But if you want to put together a major pay-per-view, the dates are a bit too close.”

Metcalfe replaces Keane as judge for Pacquiao – Bradley 2

Craig Metcalfe will replace an ill John Keane as a judge for this Saturday’s much anticipated rematch between Manny Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley.

“Metcalfe is a good judge. We have no issue whatsoever,” said Top Rank’s Carl Moretti said.

The other two judges on the panel are Glenn Trowbridge of Nevada and Michael Pernick of Florida. The referee will be Kenny Bayless of Nevada.

Jennings – Perez; Macklin – Geale doubleheader set for May 24 on HBO

Bryant Jennings
According to Dan Rafael of espm.com, an intriguing doubleheader has been set for May 24 on HBO that will feature a Heabyweight elimination bout between Bryant Jennings and Mike Perez as well as a Middleweight showdown between former champion Daniel Geale and Matthew Macklin.

“I honestly think Perez is more dangerous that Szpilka because he’s so used to being the bully,” Jennings told ESPN.com from his training camp in Houston. “Both of them are slick but Perez has this type of bully aspect and I always bully the bully. I would hope (Perez trainer) Abel Sanchez makes sure Perez is smart and they take their time to do everything correctly because they are dealing with someone who is well-skilled and well-conditioned and ready to fight. I hope Perez brings his A-game and please do not sleep on Bryant Jennings.”

“I think it’s the best matchup right now. We ain’t ducking nobody. We’re fighting for a position that we would both love to be in,” said Jennings, who turned pro in 2010. “It’s all about the position.”

Said Jennings and Geale promoter Gary Shaw, “This is a real heavyweight fight. It’s a really good fight between two top contenders. I know Jennings is ready. He trains all the time. I think it’s a 50-50 fight. The questions I have is can Jennings use the lateral movement that I believe Perez cannot handle? Will Jennings start off slowly and be a sitting duck for Mike Perez to tee off on, because Jennings is historically a slow starter? Can he start quicker with more movement like he was going into the fourth round not the first? I believe he can.”

“I think it’s a great matchup between two of the top undefeated fighters in the heavyweight division,” said Perez promoter Tom Loeffler said. “I believe the winner of this fight will ultimately go on to win the WBC heavyweight championship. Both fighters have already been featured on HBO and there is a lot of anticipation for this fight now.”

“Stylistically, it’s a great fight and the outcome is doubt. This isn’t one of those fights where you know who the winner is going to be,” said Lou DiBella, Macklin’s promoter. “Neither of these guys is a huge favorite in the fight. These are two guys who like to fight, who like to throw punches and they’ll go at each other. But I have confidence in my guy.

“This is a good, old-fashioned ‘Boxing After Dark’ fight and I think the winner will get a title fight or a fight as economically big or bigger than a title fight.” Geale (30-2, 16 KOs), 33, of Australia, won a world title in 2011, made four successful defenses, including outpointing Felix Sturm in a unification fight, before losing a split decision to Darren Barker in August. Geale has fought once since, scoring a sixth-round knockout of countryman Garth Wood in February.

“I believe Geale is the better fighter, a late bloomer, and will bring it all, no different then what he did in the Barker fight,” said Shaw, Geale’s promoter.

Usmanee to replace Martinez to face Beltran on Pacquiao – Bradley card

Former 130 lb champion Roman Martinez was forced to withdrawl from this Saturday’s fight with Ray Beltran that was to be part of the Manny Pacquiao – Timothy Bradley Pay Per View card according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

Martinez is ill and will be replaced by Arash Usmanee.

“Rocky went to see the doctor twice. That’s what Peter Rivera (Martinez’s co-promoter) told us,” said Top Rank’s Carl Moretti. “He said Rocky had no energy, low blood sugar and had not been feeling well for four or five days. Maybe he has the flu or something, but whatever it is, he doesn’t feel good and pulled out of the fight. He had missed going to the gym for three or four days in a row and on Friday he pulled out. He is just not going to be ready to fight.”

“I’m finishing the deal with (Usmanee promoter) Greg Cohen. I don’t have the paperwork yet, but that’s what we’re trying to get done,” Moretti said. “I worked things out with Greg on Friday. He said Usmanee had been in the gym training and was going to have some sort of fight soon, so this worked out for them. He’ll be in shape for the fight because he was already training. Greg says (Usmanee) is a gym rat.”

EARLY RESULTS FROM PHILADELPHIA

Kathy Duva said, “Jolene Mizzone and J Russell Peltz are the best matchmakers in the business, hands down. That was the bull and the matador. Steve, you get knocked down but you get back up baby!”

Steve said, “With my God I can do anything! Faith is all I have. I was alright. I have been down before and got up and won. He wasn’t built for the ‘USS’ Cunningham. I want to be heavyweight world champion. ‘USS’ Cunningham always finds a way.”

Mansour said, “I can’t complain. He was the better man; the tougher man. I got tired but he got tired too. I just kept stepping on the gas pedal because that is just the fighter in me. You got to be smart in the ring if you want to be successful and tonight he was smarter than me.”

“I’m outraged that my fighter Tureano Johnson was robbed of his ability to finish the fight.” said Gary Shaw. “Johnson clearly could have continued on. Stevens is nothing. Johnson was winning every round. I’m going to protest this premature stoppage and demand an immediate rematch. To rob a fighter like Johnson got robbed tonight is preposterous. With what Johnson gave the fans tonight, he should have at least been able to finish the fight. I’m beside myself with this decision.”

“I wanted to come out tonight and give the fans an all action war.” said Tureano Johnson. “My game plan was to come right at Stevens and bring the fight to him. I did exactly what I wanted to do and I was winning the fight convincingly. I have a great chin. When he landed that left hook in the final round, I was rocked, but I was ready to continue. I was robbed by the referee tonight and the fans should rally behind me to command an instant rematch. My message to Curtis Stevens is…you better not run from the rematch, because if you do, the fans will know you’re a fraud.”

Stevens said, “I didn’t set it up the way I was supposed to set it up. He was smothering me. He did what he was supposed to do. He came in here and smothered me.”

Lee Campbell scored an 8-round majority decision over Roberto Acevedo in a Light Heavyweight bout.

Sturm to defend Middleweight crown against Soliman

According to Dan Rafael of espn.con, IBF Middleweight champion Felix Sturm will defend his belt against Sam Soliman in a rematch in May 31 in Krefed, Germany.

Soliman, of Australia, got knocked down in the second round but went on to win the world title elimination bout on Sturm’s turf in Dusseldorf, Germany. Soliman won by unanimous decision on scores of 116-111, 114-113 and 114-113, but after the fight he tested positive for a banned substance. The result of the bout was changed to a no decision, and Soliman was suspended for nine months by the German Boxing Federation

“This fight really hurt,” Sturm said of the first meeting with Soliman. “It was heartbreaking. I don’t care that he doped. That’s not an excuse for me. I want to erase all doubts; I want to show the world that I’m by far the superior fighter. I didn’t train like I should have before the first fight. That won’t happen again. I promise I will keep my world title.”

“Getting a world title bout is like climbing Mt. Everest,” he said. “It’s taken me 23 years. You get to base camp and line up at the foot of the summit for your turn to conquer the peak. I’ve paid my dues and I’m ready. I couldn’t have said that five years ago, but now I can. I’m fighting smarter, and I’m jumping out of my skin to hear the referee say, ‘Seconds out.’

“My mission is to bring the IBF middleweight world title back to Australia. This is the title I have been chasing, taking my chances, and earning my No. 1 contender position. A little over 12 months ago I went over to Germany and beat Felix, winning that fight in a unanimous decision. I am under no illusions about the task ahead. I know Felix is going to be more prepared and ready for me this time, but I and my team also learned a lot from our last bout.”

Donaire to headline card with 3 featherweight title bouts in Macau in May 31

Nonito_Donaire
Nonito Donaire will attempt to win a Featherweight title when he takes on Simpiwe Vetyeka on May 31 in Macau on a card that will feature two other Featherweight title bouts according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

“We’re going to increase the number of cards we are going to do in Asia and we can’t have Zou Shiming on every card,” promoter Bob Arum said of the two-time Chinese Olympic gold medalist, who has been the central figure in Top Rank’s recent series of cards in Macau. “So now we have to build up interest in other fighters. Donaire (a native of the Philippines) will have a big following since it’s only an hour and five minutes by plane from Manila to Macau and there are regular flights. There’s also a big Filipino population in Macau and in Hong Kong (which is a half-hour ferry away).”

The card will also include two other featherweight world title bouts as Nicholas Walters is due to defend his belt against an opponent to be determined and Evgeny Gradovich will fight mandatory challenger Alexander Miskirtchian, the former European champion. If Donaire wins he is likely to later face one of the winners of the other title bouts, Arum said.

However, Donaire, 31, is already in training in the Philippines, where is father, Nonito Donaire Sr., is preparing him. Father and son reunited before the Darchinyan rematch following a lengthy estrangement, and Nonito Sr. worked the corner as an assistant to head trainer Robert Garcia.

Cameron Dunkin, Donaire’s manager, told ESPN.com that he was not sure what Garcia’s role would be in the training camp, if any, since he is training his other fighters at his Oxnard, Calif., gym, including Gradovich.

“Robert I’m sure will go to the fight, but I’ve got to iron all that out,” Dunkin said. “Nonito thought it was the right thing to train over there [in the Philippines] since the fight is in Asia. He’s really comfortable there and he will already be on the same time zone.”

“This is the guy who knocked out Chris John, which means something after he made 18 defenses,” Arum said. “It’s a very important fight for Donaire, obviously.”

Said Dunkin, “Nonito is really excited and motivated for this fight. It’s the most motivated I have seen him in a long, long time. Before the fight with Rigondeaux, he told he didn’t even know if he wanted to fight anymore. He had his shoulder problems and hand problems. He beat himself up because he was so active (with four fights in 2012). He wasn’t healing between fights and hard training camps.

“He told me he’s motivated for this fight and that he wants to fight and wants to show everyone what he can do and show the people who have given up on him, or think he isn’t what he once was. He wants to show people that he is still one of the best, which he is. I love that attitude. He’s a tremendous fighter and when his mind is right and he’s motivated, he’s terrific.”

“Nonito has a great deal and it will be even better if he wins this fight,” Dunkin said. “But this guy (Vetyeka) is a tough, tough guy, maybe the toughest guy Nonito has ever fought other than Rigondeaux, maybe even tougher than that because of his size. He can punch, he’s long-armed and he’s big.”

Pacquiao – Bradley officials named

Pacquiao_Bradley_Rocky_140207_001a
After the controversy of their 1st bout, a very important piece of business was taken care of as the official were named for the April 12 rematch between Timothy Bradley and Manny Pacquiao according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

The commission appointed veteran judges Glenn Trowbridge of Nevada, Michael Pernick of Florida and John Keane from Great Britain to score the fight. Kenny Bayless, regarded by many as the best referee in the world, was appointed as the third man in the ring.

“What the commission did was give us a whole list of officials that were being considered — judges and referees — and then we circulated it to both camps and we said knock out anybody that you feel may not be suitable,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum, who promotes both fighters. “Then we had a phone call with (commission chairman Francisco Aguilar and commissioner Bill Brady last week) and said, ‘Here are the officials that both sides have no objection to,’ and out of that they selected three judges and the referee.”

Arum said the list he was initially given included eight or nine judges and five referees.

“Neither camp can complain about the officials selected because these are judges approved by both camps and same with the referee,” Arum said. “I really commend the commission for taking the steps that they did and with all the transparency in this. It’s the fighters who are most affected by this decision and now neither fighter can say anything whatever happens.”

The Nevada commission typically appoints at least two Nevada judges to major fights and also often brings in one out-of-state judge. For this fight, Arum said the commission went along with his request to bring in two judges from outside of Nevada.

“We requested that because there are so many good judges around the world why limit yourself to just Nevada,” Arum said.

Officials were also selected for the other fights on the HBO PPV card.

• Vic Drakulich will referee the regional lightweight title bout between Mexico’s Raymundo Beltran (28-6-1, 17 KOs) and two-time junior lightweight titlist Roman Martinez of Puerto Rico. • Tony Weeks was selected to referee the fight between junior welterweight titlist Khabib Allakhverdiev (19-0, 9 KOs) of Russia, who is making his second defense, and challenger Jessie Vargas (23-0, 9 KOs) of Las Vegas. The judges for the fight will be Robert Hoyle and Jerry Roth or Nevada and Glenn Feldman of Connecticut.

• Robert Byrd was appointed to referee the fight between interim junior lightweight titlist Bryan Vasquez (32-1, 17 KOs) of Costa Rica and Jose Felix (26-0-1, 12 KOs) of Mexico. The judges will be Dick Houck and Patricia Morse Jarman of Nevada and Levi Martinez of New Mexico.

I found the key to the body. I found this open place in his defense and my last punch was more harder.” When asked about Adonis Stevenson Kovalev responded, “Adonis Stevenson is a piece of shit. “Dulorme showed great poise tonight against a power puncher who likes to brawl,” said Gary Shaw. “He’s now in position to challenge any of the champions at 140lbs and I’ll talk with his team to see what we can put together. This is a great win for Dulorme and I’m proud of his accomplishments thus far. Garcia and Ariza are doing a great job with him and happy they’ve united. He’s on his way to big time fights.”

The referee Allen Huggins deducted a point from Thompson for spitting out his mouthpiece. Lonnie B said, “I think the score was kind of crazy. I felt like it was close. He is a good fighter. I thought I did enough in the later rounds to win. He fought a tough fight. I am going to go back in the gym, work on my mistakes and come back stronger next time. I thank God that I just came out safe. I am sorry I didn’t get the decision tonight but mark my words I will be back.”

The card will be broadcast on Showtime.

“When you can see Thurman, Matthysse and Figueroa all on one night, it’s pretty exciting I think,” said Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer.

“Julio Diaz will get up for this kind of fight,” Schaefer said. “You saw how he looked in England against Amir Khan. Julio Diaz always comes to fight, and he we’ll see what happens. All of the other top 147-pounders are fighting, so Keith is going to do this fight. We’ll give Julio Diaz one last chance and see what he can make of it. But for Keith, this is about him getting back in the ring without having to wait for some of those other guys while they are getting their fights done.

“Being on air and fighting is the formula. You look at [middleweight titlist] Gennady Golovkin. He’s not fighting King Kong but he has stayed busy, and that is a key in this sport. If you stay busy, you stay relevant. If you wait for that big fight and sit out like some of these fighters have done, you become irrelevant. Keith is going to stay relevant. And one thing we all know about Julio Diaz is that this guy does not just come to pick up a paycheck. He comes to fight and he knows it’s a must-win fight.”

“Matthysse wants to see how he still feels at 140 pounds. He might move up to 147 and try to inject himself into the Mayweather sweepstakes, but he’ll fight this fight and then make that decision,” Schaefer said. “In the meantime, we were looking for an opponent who comes to fight and with Molina we found that.”

However, Figueroa reinjured his left hand a week before the fight and had to withdraw. According to Schaefer, the injury was not serious, only requiring a few weeks of rest.

“Everything is OK with his hand,” Schaefer said. “He had it checked out. He is ready to go and excited to come back.”

Belmontes, who had lost three out of four fights, is getting the title opportunity because he pulled an upset in his last fight, easily outpointing previously unbeaten contender Will Tomlinson of Australia in a 10-rounder on the Alvarez-Angulo card.

“That was a great win for Belmontes,” Schaefer said. “Tomlinson was undefeated and ranked in the organizations and Belmontes beat him. That was a big win for him, and this is his reward.”

Stevenson – Fonfara May 24 on Showtime

HBO Boxing After Dark Weigh-In: Adonis Stevenson vs Tony Bellew
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Light Heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson will take on Andrzej Fonfara in a title bout that will land on Showtime on May 24 in Montreal.

The fight was originally ticketed for HBO which would have led to a unification fight with Sergey Kovalev but Stevenson signed with adviser Al Haymon and a bigger deal was reached with Showtime.

“We had a deal. It changed. It is not the way we do it,” HBO spokesman Ray Stallone told ESPN.com.

“We’re thrilled to have Adonis on the network,” Stephen Espinoza, the Showtime Sports executive vice president and general manager, told ESPN.com. “He’s one of the most exciting fighters in any division. I intended to get in business with him in August 2012. He was supposed to fight on the network on the undercard of the Jean Pascal-Tavoris Cloud fight but Pascal got injured and the card was canceled. It took longer that I expected but we finally got our man and we’re thrilled.

“We have a structure in place that will allow us to do the Fonfara fight and whatever big fights become available for him. Should Kovalev [who has a multifight deal with HBO] become available, we’d welcome him at the network if he’d like to fight Adonis.”

If Stevenson defeats Fonfara, the fight he will be lined up for will be against the winner of the title unification fight between Bernard Hopkins and Beibut Shumenov (another Haymon client). They headline a Showtime card April 19 in Washington, D.C.

“A unification fight is absolutely the natural progression for Adonis,” Espinoza said. “If he takes care of business on May 24 against Fonfara, the winner of Hopkins-Shumenov is the natural fight to make and one we want to do.”

WBO Orders Lomachenko – Russell vacant title fight

GaryRussellWins300
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, the WBO has ordered a Featherweight title fight between Gary Russell Jr. and Vasyl Lomachenko.

The sides have 30 days to negotiate a deal or the fight will put up for a purse bid, which is likely because Lomachenko is promoted by Top Rank and Russell is with its bitter rival, Golden Boy Promotions, and they do not negotiate fights with each other.

“We are in the position where we are getting a second shot at the title and we are very happy,” Egis Klimas, Lomachenko’s manager, told ESPN.com. “I already spoke to our promoter, Bob Arum, and asked him to arrange the fight. If the negotiations are not going to go on, our promoter is willing to go into a purse bid. Lomachenko has nothing to lose after fighting Salido. The question is, will Russell fight Lomachenko?

“Lomachenko made such a big announcement by fighting Salido that to take a step back in competition and take the easy way — it would be nonsense.”

“[It will be a] very interesting process to see if the fight gets made, or goes to purse bid,” Top Rank vice president Carl Moretti said. “I told Lomachenko after the Salido fight, ‘The past is behind you, learn from it. The future is ahead, prepare for it and the future could be Russell for vacant title.’ Lomachenko is on board 110 percent.”

Golden Boy Promotions chief executive Richard Schaefer said he received the letter from the WBO and would talk to Russell adviser Al Haymon to see what they wanted to do about the fight.

“I have to discuss it with Gary’s team and see how we want to go about it, but I think it’s a very interesting matchup,” Schaefer said. “Gary has been waiting for a world title shot for a while. I will talk to them next week. Maybe we can make it happen. Maybe it won’t. Maybe it will go to a purse bid. It’s a fight we’d like to do.”

Caballero to fight Oba in title Eliminator in Japan

Randy Caballero will make the long trek to Japan to take on Kohei Oba in a Bantamweight elimination bout on April 4 according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“I am confident in his ability and know he is ready for this level,” said Golden Boy matchmaker Robert Diaz, who helped make the deal for the fight and will accompany Caballero to Japan.

“I like the fight for Randy. No matter where it is I think Randy wins the fight,” co-manager Cameron Dunkin said. “He and his dad (trainer and co-manager Marcos Caballero) and I spoke about it and we felt it was OK to go to Japan. Of course, we would have liked for the fight to be here (in the United States) but Robert Diaz said there was no way we could do it here financially. The Japanese came up with more money.

“Oba is strong and tough. He’s a wild swinging guy, but I think Caballero is too clever and too good of a boxer. Randy is a terrific talent. This guy will charge in and wing shots and try to rough Randy up, but Randy is a really good boxer and slick and smart. He’ll catch you and he’s been backing guys up and ripping them with body shots. He’s ready for this.”

Fury – Chisora rematch is set for July 26

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Heavyweights Tyson Fury and Dereck Chisora will meet in a title elimination rematch on July 26 in Englans.

“This is the big one for both men,” said promoter Frank Warren. “It’s the fight for the right to face Klitschko for the world title and one of the best to be made on the world scene. The winner will become the No. 1 challenger to Klitschko and he’ll be forced to face whoever that man is, Chisora or Fury.”

“Tyson Fury is in my way and I’m going to smash him out of it and get the world title fight against Klitschko,” said the 6-foot-2, 240-pound Chisora. “Yes, Fury beat me last time, but that was at the worst time of my career. You’re seeing the best of me now and there’s no way Fury can deal with that.”

“He hasn’t moved on in his career since he beat me,” Chisora said. “I’ve been fighting at a higher level while he’s been fighting nobodies. This time I’ll dump him in a heap in the ring. He’s still got it in the back of his mind that he’s beaten me, he won a battle. I’m going to win the war.”

“It’s set to be a great night in my home city, the night I earn my dream world title shot in front of my home fans,” said the 6-9, 250-pound Fury, who was born in Manchester. “It means I have to go over old ground and batter Chisora again, but if that’s what has to be done, I’ll do it and in much better style this time. That [first] fight was nearly three years ago. I’ve moved into world class since then and remained unbeaten.

“I’ll give it to him, Tubby has shifted that spare tire around his waist and got himself into shape, but he can’t build muscle on his chin and when I land on it he’ll be knocked clean out. Get one thing clear: I’m getting the world title fight against Klitschko. I’m the best in Britain and you’ll see why on July 26.”

DANNY GARCIA DEFEATS MAURICIO HERRERA, REMAINS UNIFIED SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION

Danny Garcia
Unified Super Lightweight World Champion Danny “Swift” Garcia (28-0, 16 KOs) defeated Mauricio “El Maestro” Herrera (20-4, 7 KOs) via a majority decision to remain undefeated on Saturday night in front of a sold-out crowd at Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Bayamon, Puerto Rico on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING®.

Garcia established himself in the first round, landing the bigger punches against Herrera. But it was quickly clear that the challenger wasn’t going to let Garcia off easy, peppering the champion with strong shots to his body and head. By the end of round four, Garcia’s corner, specifically his father and trainer, Angel Garcia, could be heard telling the champion urgently to step-up his game and take control. Herrera, of Riverside, Calif., pressed on and proved himself as a worthy opponent with both fighters exchanging vicious shots throughout the extremely close match.

With the raucous crowd partial to the defending champion, whose father was born and raised in Puerto Rico, Garcia seemed to be carried by the cheers in what turned out to be the toughest fight of his career. At the end of the fight, SHO STATS reported that Garcia had landed 150 power punches compared to Herrera’s 82. Herrera landed more overall punches with 221 to Garcia’s 204. The final scores were 114-114, 116-112 and, 116-112.

After the fight, Garcia spoke with SHOWTIME Sports® ringside reporter Jim Gray, saying, “He is a crafty veteran and I know every time I step in the ring, every fighter wants what I have. So I expect them to bring everything. I had to make adjustments and I had to push the fight. He is a good fighter but I am a true champion. I had to make adjustments and pull it out. I needed to find my comfort zone but once I adjusted and got him on the ropes I knew I was doing good. I had to keep my composure and use my power shots. He came to fight and he did and it was a great fight.”

When asked if he felt he did enough to win the close decision, Garcia said, “I wanted to knock him out in front of my fans but he was tough. I know nothing is going to be easy from this point on for the rest of my career. I thought I won the fight. The Puerto Rican fans here support me. I love them.”

Regarding a potential move up in weight, Garcia told Gray, “I think making 140 pounds might have affected my performance a little bit. I need to sit with my camp and see if I should go up to 147 and start a new journey. It’s been getting a little hard so maybe I need to think about moving up.”

After the fight, Herrera told media that he felt he won. “I thought I was fine-tuned,” he said. “I came perfectly prepared for this fight. I was trying to push the fight. I came to box but he wasn’t making a fight so I am the one that had to make the fight. I was the one putting the pressure on to make the fight. I feel like I won the fight. I thought I finished strong at the end too. I thought I won the fight.”

Heavyweight Deontay Wilder made it 31 for 31 in the knockout department has he stopped Malik Scott in a scheduled 12 round bout.

Wilder, 227 lbs of Tuscaloosa, AL is 31-0 with 31 knockouts. Scott, 238 lbs of Van Nuys, CA is 36-2-1.

After the fight, Wilder spoke with Grayabout his performance. “I’ve got power. I’ve got natural power. This is something that you can’t buy. This is something that you can’t enhance and put in your body. This is all natural pure Alabama power. The left hand was right to the temple, to the head, and that is a soft spot. My power is crazy. I go through the gloves. Even though he had his gloves, there is nothing stopping that. Even though it went through his glove it still hurts.”

When asked if he is ready to take a step up and fight for a heavyweight title despite having not faced the top fighters in the division, Wilder responded, “All the testing is done in the gym. I bust my butt off in the gym to come here and perform for all the people and I make it look easy. I don’t care if I don’t go past four rounds or solve all the questions that people have about me. I have one mission and it is to unify all the heavyweight belts.”

After the fight Scott, upset by his performance, said, “I got caught. I don’t really remember what happened because I never saw the shot coming. I know he caught me with the left hook. I am so disappointed. I trained really hard. It is just awful.

Main Events’ CEO Kathy Duva said, “This is a passing of the torch. Glazkov did everything he absolutely had to do to win this fight against a very tough and very accomplished opponent. Marquez to take on Alvarado on May 17th in Los Angeles

Marquez LAX arrival_121201_006a
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, former world champions Juan Manuel Marquez and Mike Alvarado will christen to return of boxing to the Fabulous Forum in Inglewood, California on May 17th.

like most about it is the historical significance,” said Top Rank’s Bob Arum. “They spent a lot of money refurbishing the Forum and it brings back memories of all the great fights that took place there, like when Muhammad Ali fought Ken Norton there [in their 1973 rematch, which Arum promoted]. Marquez is a guy who earned his bones there. The Forum is where he established himself and this is going to be a great homecoming for him.

“I’ve been in this business for so long and, to me, the history is important. I’m really thrilled for my company to be re-opening the new Forum for boxing.”

“I think this fight has a lot of story lines,” Top Rank vice president Carl Moretti said. “It’s at the Forum and it will be raucous, and we know Marquez’s history there. And, obviously, when the bell rings it’ll be a hellacious fight where neither guy will back up.”

“Mike is so excited. We have been training already for three weeks. Marquez has always been on our radar and he is the one we always wanted to fight,” said Henry Delgado, Alvarado’s manager. “This fight is our redemption to all of our fans. Mike knows how important this fight is. We plan to relocate our training to Los Angeles this weekend. What a fight with such a reward — to fight the winner of Pacquiao versus Bradley.

“This is really an incredible opportunity. We will be fully prepared to fight Marquez on May 17.”

Said Moretti, “I think you’ll see a more motivated and focused Mike Alvarado. He knows he has to perform well in this fight after the loss at home and it’s also a very dangerous fight for Marquez.”

“Marquez wants to win that title and that’s an incentive for taking this fight with Alvarado, because he knows he will get that opportunity if he wins,” Arum said. “So if it’s Pacquiao, he said he would fight him again, and if Bradley wins, well he wants that fight too. And if Mike wins, he certainly will be a good opponent to fight Bradley or Pacquiao, whoever wins.”

Porter to defend Welterweight belt against Malignaggi on Hopkins – Shumenov card

Paulie Malignaggi
IBF Welterweight champion Shawn Porter will defend his title against former two-division belt holder Paulie Malignaggi on April 19th in Washington, D.C. as part of a championship tripleheader that will be televised on Showtime according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

“This is a very meaningful fight for Paulie and for Shawn,” said Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer. “I think it’s a very attractive fight in the ring as well. To be paired up with Hopkins is absolutely fantastic. I’m happy for the fans, for the fighters and for Showtime. Three world title fights. I think it’s going to be one of the biggest cards in Washington D.C., in quite some time.”

“It’s great for Shawn Porter because he is fighting one of the most recognized names in the sport of boxing,” Schaefer said. “People know Paulie Malignaggi, so for Shawn Porter to go in the ring with someone of the name recognition and resume of Paulie Malignaggi, should he win, it would be a big feather in Shawn’s cap. It would be a big win for him.

“For Paulie Malignaggi it’s a tremendous opportunity to win another world title. It really is amazing. When I think back to 2010, when most people had written Paulie off after he lost to Amir Khan, he came to see me in Los Angeles and said, ‘I’m not done, contrary to what everyone says. I really want to be with Golden Boy.’ I believed in him and since then Paulie has had some of his biggest fights and accomplishments.”

“I’m excited about this fight and excited to get back in the ring for my first defense,” Porter told ESPN.com. “I was thinking about it last night. I’ve had [regional titles] and it was just a matter of winning those fights to get to the bigger title fight. Now, this is a matter of holding onto something, holding on to this title. I’ve been looking at Paulie’s fights on YouTube and at his record. He has fought everybody and he’s still trying to do it. I won’t allow him to screw me and take me to school.

“I see him trying to beat me with his speed and trying to move against me. I know me and my father (trainer Ken Porter) will have a great fight plan consisting of a lot of things we did against Devon Alexander. I think it will be an exciting fight for fans. We knew what we wanted to do against Devon — contain his speed and movement and limit what he likes to do. Same thing goes with Paulie. The difference here is because Paulie has so much experience, he’s not going to allow me to just do anything. He’s going to fight back. From round 1 to the end, it will be a fight of making adjustments. You have two guys coming in who really want it and who both legitimately have what it takes to win the fight.”

“I’ve seen Porter through the years,” Malignaggi told ESPN.com. “He’s a young fighter, an improving fighter. He’s gotten better over the years and is maturing into a good solid pro. I’m excited about the chance to win my third world championship. I’ve been through a lot of naysayers. A chance to win a world title for the third time is special and a motivator and something a lot people didn’t expect from me. I’m here and I’m looking to make good by winning a third championship.”

Porter-Malignaggi was made possible when the IBF approved Porter’s application for an exception to his mandatory defense against Kell Brook of England. April 19 is 12 days beyond the window by which Porter could have made an optional defense without an exception, but that did not match Showtime’s schedule.

The IBF granted the exception under the condition that Porter and Malignaggi agree in writing that the winner will make his next defense within 90 days against Brook, as long as Brook wins his stay-busy fight against Alvaro Robles on Saturday in Liverpool, England.

“We had to wait for the IBF for their ruling and they ruled, so the fight is on,” Schaefer said. “Both fighters will agree with the ruling of the IBF. Whatever the IBF ordered is fine and both fighters will agree to whatever the IBF stipulates.”

Said Porter, “Right now it’s Paulie for me. After this fight, it would be Kell Brook. Unless something happens Kell brook, he’s supposedly the next guy.”
