Undercard results from “Knockout Kings II”

SAN ANTONIO – The largest reaction of Saturday’s “Knockout Kings II” undercard came before its fourth and final off-television match, when lanky San Antonio junior welterweight Armando Cardenas (2-0, 2 KOs) entered the ring for his expected annihilation of designated opponent Stephen Salazar (0-1), a hopelessly overmatched fellow Texan from Laredo making his pro debut.

The hoped-for annihilation came quickly at 1:21 of round 1, with Salazar having been to the blue mat once but still on his feet. Cardenas had the second knockout of his career, and the local crowd, still sparse when the undercard completed, had its desired knockout.

The first knockout of “Knockout Kings II” came in its third fight, when Michigan light heavyweight Anthony “The Dog” Dirrell (26-0, 21 KOs) dropped reeling Ohioan Anthony Hanshaw (23-4-2, 14 KOs) with a right cross, and the match was waived off at 2:36 of round 3, despite Hanshaw’s being up by the count of 4. The match was an aesthetically displeasing affair, as Dirrell, whom Hanshaw flipped over his back in the first round, spent much of it flexing and posing and explaining, through his performance, why a fighter undefeated in 25 matches would be fighting off-television.

Before that, in a battle of San Antonio junior lightweights, it was clean punching against a good chin, as Joseph Rodriguez (4-0, 2 KOs) won a unanimous decision over Jesse Anguiano (1-3-2) by scores of 39-37, 40-36 and 40-36. Rodriguez landed right uppercuts and left hooks enough against the vulnerable Anguiano to raise questions about his power, going forward, while removing any doubt about the solidity of Anguiano’s chin.

Saturday’s card began with an upset, as California junior lightweight Andrew Cancio (15-2-2, 11 KOs) decisioned Corpus Christi’s Jerry Belmontes (18-2, 5 KOs) by unanimous scores of 98-92, 98-92 and 97-93. Over 10 evenly matched rounds, rounds in which neither man was able to imperil the other for a sustained period, Cancio got the better of most every exchange, winning a fair decision against a South Texan in South Texas, never a mean feat.

Opening bell rang on a sparsely populated AT&T Center at 5:03 PM local time.

Brook to battle Sanchenko

According to Dan Raafel of espn.com, Welterweigt contenders Kell Brook and Vyscheslav Sanchenko on October 26th in Sheffield, England.

“It’s a tough task, but I’m very excited,” Brook said. “Anyone who stops Ricky Hatton is a dangerous fighter and one that I will take very seriously, so I can’t wait to get in there and train very hard to put on a good show for my fans in Sheffield. He’s been a world champion, been there and done it, so he will be out to prove that he’s worthy of another crack at being on top of the world.

“I really get up for it when I box in Sheffield. It’ll be packed to the rafters and they are really passionate fans, so I can’t wait to be back in my arena, in a big fight that will take me closer to a world title shot. I’m on the doorstep of a world title, and I’m ready to show I have what it takes to win it.”

“I’m delighted to make this fight and feel it’s the perfect fight for Kell at this time,” said Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn. “It’s without a doubt his sternest test yet, and Senchenko brings credibility as a former world titleholder and mass appeal [in England] after his KO win over Ricky Hatton. We are going to put on a special show in Sheffield, and the atmosphere will be electric.”

Top Rank signs Olympic star Lomachenko

Top Rank has signed two time Olympic Gold medal winner Vasyl Lomachenko to a promotional contract according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

“The contract is signed, and we are ecstatic about it,” Top Rank vice president Carl Moretti told ESPN.com. “You couple this with our signings of [other top 2012 Olympians] Felix Verdejo, Oscar Valdez and Jose Ramirez and this makes it a grand slam.”

“I am very excited and happy with the Top Rank offer and signing the contract,” Lomachenko said in a statement given to ESPN.com. “I know I will have to prove I am the best and make history in pro boxing, but I have no doubts about it as I did in the amateurs and I will do it as a pro.

“(Top Rank chairman) Bob Arum knows how to build champions and I know how to fight. This will make for a good team. I am happy finally that all negotiations are over and I can concentrate on my training and start preparing for my first fight on Oct. 12.”

“He is one of the most heralded amateurs to go professional in many years,” Top Rank president Todd duBoef told ESPN.com. “He’s one of those guys some people thought might stay amateur because he’s such an icon in his country. But he wanted a professional career and wants to be on the fast track. He wants to go for a 10-round fight and go to a world title fight immediately after that. He has that much confidence in his ability.

“There’s not going to be much development with him. He feels he is fully developed. He’s ready to go.”

Moretti said no opponent has been lined up for Lomachenko’s Oct. 12 fight but said it would be “an established, 10-round, world-ranked fighter.”

As for Lomachenko’s potential, Moretti called it “limitless.”

“It’s almost like he’s already a pro with his experience,” Moretti said. “I don’t think this is your normal pro debut. This is a throwback to the [U.S.] Olympians of 1976 and 1984, when they were fighting established guys in their first few fights, guys like Sugar Ray Leonard, Leon and Michael Spinks, Evander Holyfield, Meldrick Taylor, Pernell Whitaker. This guy has those kind of amateur credentials.

“He looks like he can do it all. He can punch, he can box, he has endurance. I think he can adapt to any style that comes at him, and mentally he’s as strong as any top contender right now.”

“Because of his amateur credentials, he will fight 10-round opponents, and a world title fight could come very, very soon, certainly less than 10 fights,” Moretti said. “I love it. I think he really reminds me of those ’76 and ’84 Olympians, where you are not handpicking opponents but just trying to get top guys to fight him because you know he can handle anything.”

“I want to fight the best in the world,” Lomachenko told the AP.

“He wants to become a pound-for-pound champion,” siad advisor Egis Klimas. “He doesn’t want to be on a long track. He wants to fight for a title soon. If we could get a champion today, we would like to fight the champion today. He wants to make something special.”

Froch to face Groves in all UK showdown

Carl Froch
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com IBF Super Middleweight champion Carl Froch will defend against mandatory challenger George Groves in what will be a much anticipated United Kingdom showdown.

“I’m delighted to have got this fight made,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “It’s a great fight for British boxing with a real throwback feel to the big domestic fights in the super middleweight division in the ’90s. When George became the mandatory challenger, I knew there was no way Carl would relinquish the belt and no way that George would look anywhere else.

“This fight will grow and grow and fans can expect an exciting night and a packed undercard when full details of the fight are announced.”

“I’m excited the first defense of both my belts is a big domestic clash,” Froch said. “I am a proper fighter and a proper champion and I will always face my mandatory challenger rather than vacate the title. I’ve known George for a while. I’ve sparred with him and watched him grow and now he’s my mandatory. I will be pouring everything into my preparation for the fight and George will face the very best of me.

“It is better this way than a low-key overseas opponent as this fight will relight memories of some of the great all-British clashes and, with world titles on the line, it’s a really huge occasion and one that will grab the attention of British sports fans.”

“This is the biggest fight of my career and being a world champion is something that I dreamed of as a kid,” Groves said. “I’m well-ranked across all the governing bodies but fighting Carl is the one that I wanted the most. He is a big name in the U.K. and a well-respected champion around the world, and I have a great team around me that can put together the right game plan to beat him and become a world champion and a major force in the super middleweight division.”

Olympic Gold Medal winner Anthony Joshua to turn pro; signs with Matchroom

Gonzalez to take on Segura

Undefeated Flyweight Jonathan Gonzalez will fight former world champion Giovanni Segura on Augusta 17th in Carolina, Puerto Rico according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

“Segura caused a big hurt in Puerto Rico when he beat — two times — our champion, Ivan Calderon, and I want to heal those hurts, no matter if [it] is a KO or a decision win,” Gonzalez said. “I am going to win and after this bout become a world champion.”

“Segura is a tough fighter, but we have our plans to face him,” Gonzalez said. “The people said [will I] be ready for the pressure Segura will [apply], but I ask Segura if he is going to be ready for my pressure.”

“Now we have a more international card with fighters from Dominican Republic, Cuba, Mexico, United States and Puerto Rico,” promoter Ivan Rivera of PR Best Boxing Promotion said. “Felix Diaz and Yudel Jhonson, two great prospects who were good amateur fighters for their countries, will fight for their first time in Puerto Rico.”

Rafael Marquez signs with Golden Boy

Former world champion Rafael Marquez has signed a promotional agreement with Golden Boy Promotions according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

“We’d like to give him a comeback fight and see how he does, give him a few fights and then eventually match him with a Leo Santa Cruz or an Abner Mares. Rafael Marquez is a good name and he has always made good fights,” Golden Boy chief executive Richard Schaefer said. “We have some potential fights for him.”

“Rafael is coming off a loss, so we will give him a fight in September and see how he looks and see if he can still compete with one of our young guys,” said Golden Boy matchmaker Eric Gomez. “He wants to fight for a world title again and at his age, he doesn’t want to waste any time. He wants good fights. He wants any one of our top guys at 122 or 126.

“So we will give him a fight, get him cleaned up [from his last loss]. He’s a little long in the tooth but he has a lot of fans and he is still very well liked. He said he still wants to train and being back with Nacho has to be a positive.”

“I will make those four fights with Golden Boy and then say goodbye to boxing, which could happen in 2014,” Marquez told the Record, a Mexican newspaper. “I need another world title. I feel pretty good to continue fighting. People will see the difference in Rafael Marquez. I have to show them that I have a lot left. There are many opponents who could face me — Abner Mares, Leo Santa Cruz, Victor Terrazas.”

Molina stuns Bey with 10th round stoppage

John Molina Jr.
John Molina scored a stunning come from behind stoppage over previously undefeated Mickey Bey in the final scheduled round of their Lightweight bout at the Joint at The Hard Rock in Las Vegas.

Bey boxed slickly in round one. Molina started to walk Bey down in the second and started to get closer. Bey’s work produced a mouse under the left eye of Molina in the second frame. Molina started to get through with power shots in round three. The action started to get heated as Bey would land the straighter but Molina was landing the harder. Bey took the hard punches well and steadied himself by backing up and taking advantage of his hand speed.

Bey mixed up his punches well using lead rights, quick left hooks and uppercuts. It got to the point where Molina was following Bey and looking for the big shot.

It was actually Bey who looked like he would maybe get a stoppage as he was ripping shots off the face of Molina in the final frame. Molina then landed a left hook that froze and hurt Bey. With Bey clearly hurt, Molina jumped all over Bey and landed about fifteen unanswered blows with many of them being flush in the face until referee Vic Drachulich rescued Bey at 2:01 of the final round.

The finish with reminiscent to Molina’s come from behind stoppage over Hank Lundy as Molina was down 90-81, 89-82 and 88-83 to Bey heading into the final round.

Molina, 134 1/2 lbs of Covina, CA will now look for a second title opportunity with a record of 26-3 with 21 knockouts. Bey of Las Vegas via Cleveland is now 18-1-1.

Molina knew the score entering the final session. “I knew I was fighting an uphill battle and that I was definitely behind on the scorecards, but I always felt I was in the fight,’’ he said. “This is how we do it. This is why we do boxing. I seized the moment and got the job done. When my back was up against the wall, I came back stronger.

“Bey was a strong-armed guy who was difficult to get inside against. But I knew I’d hurt him early with a body shot because he let out a moan. I wanted him to get a little confidence as the fight went on so he would stand more. I think he wanted to try and discourage me at times but it didn’t work. When I connected in the 10th, I saw his eyes roll back. The beauty of boxing is possessing knockout power in both hands.’’

The event was presented by Mayweather Promotions. Boxing superstar and pound-for-pound kingpin, Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr., promotes both Bey and Jack. He also promoted four other boxers on Friday’s card. Mayweather, who was seated at ringside in time for the evening’s first bout at 5:30 p.m., got into the ring and congratulated Molina afterward.

“That meant a hell of a lot to me,’’ Molina said. “It says a lot about Floyd.’’

“I don’t want to take any credit away from Molina but I felt I was fighting two or three people in there,’’ Bey said. “The ref was warning me for one thing or another the whole fight. He nit-picked me for everything, pretty much took 80 percent of my arsenal away. It became a distraction, and then it took me out of my game plan. He definitely affected my performance.’’

According to ShoStats provided by CompuBox, Bey threw more punches (531-432) and landed more punches (253-145).

“This is a major disappointment,’’ Bey said. “I felt I did what I had to do. I knew I was way ahead on points. I wasn’t trying to finish him in the last round, I was just fighting my fight. I landed a lot of hard shots, too. We’ll have to see where we go from here.’’

Badou Jack scored the best win of his young career as he scored a ten round unanimous decision over Farah Ennis in a Super Middleweight bout.

Jack continuously pushed Ennis back with the jab and mixed in an occasional right hand behind it. Ennis sat back and would try to jab with Jack but it was few and far between and barely used his right hand. Despite being urged on by his corner, Ennis continued to fight at a measured pace and Jack was never threatened during the fight.

Jack, 167 1/2 lbs of Stockholm, SWE won by scores of 100-90; 98-92 and 98-92 and is now 15-0. Ennis, 166 1/2 lbs of Philadelphia is now 21-2.

Guinn in for injured Grano to fight Adamek

Tomasz Adamek
Tony Grano has been forced to pull out of his August 3rd bout with Tomasz Adamek and is being replaced by Dominick Guinn according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

“He said his neck was bothering him for two weeks and he went to get the MRI [on Wednesday] and he got the results [Thursday], and the doctor said there’s no way he could fight, because it was hitting his spinal cord,” said Main Events matchmaker Jolene Mizzone.

“Dominick had called me about a week and a half ago and was saying, ‘If there’s anything, I’m available to fight.’ I asked him if he was in the gym and he said he was and I told him I don’t have anything now but stay in the gym because I have a heavyweight fight on Aug. 3, so who knows if something might happen,” Mizzone said. “I called him after I heard about Grano and told Dominick this is an opportunity. He said, ‘Let me talk to my coach.’ He got back to me in about a half-hour. It just worked out.”

Garcia – Matthysse Official for September 14th Mayweather – Alvarez card

Danny Garcia
Richard Scahefer just announced that Danny Garcia and Lucas Matthysse will fight for the Super Lightweight championship of the world on September 14th as part of the mega Floyd Mayweather – Canelo Alvarez card.

“The one just got another One said”, said Schaefer

“These are two modern day gladitors. For all those who thought Danny was scared of Lucas. Well you know you all have egg on his face”

“This is a main event in its own”, said Maywweather Promotions CEO Promotions Leonard Ellerbe.

There will be a three city press tour in Puerto Rico, New York and Los Angeles

“This is the fight I wanted and the fight that I asked for. That is why I’m so happy this fight has been made and will be a part of this huge event,” said Danny Garcia. “I’m more confident than ever in my abilities and I’m going to show it on September 14. Matthysse is a good fighter and has a big punch, but I’m a talented fighter with what it takes to be a champion and stay that way. This is an opportunity for the world to see what I can really do in the ring.”

“I’m glad I finally get a chance to fight Danny Garcia,” said Lucas Matthysse. “This is the fight that the entire boxing world (especially my country Argentina) and I wanted. I want to thank my promoters Golden Boy Promotions and Mario Arano for making this fight possible. On September 14, I will show the world that I am the best 140 pound fighter on the planet.”

“Floyd was adamant about giving fans what they wanted to see when he chose Canelo Alvarez as his opponent for his September 14 fight,” said Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions. “We’re thrilled that Garcia vs. Matthysse has been added to the card, and that fans will be getting even more boxing at its best.”

“The compelling match-up between Garcia and Matthysse could absolutely be its own main event,” said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “We’ve added another fight that fans have been clamoring for to an already stellar night of boxing. With the addition of this mega fight we are certain that “THE ONE” will continue to break boxing records.”

“Boxing is at its finest when the best step up to fight the best, and this is what we have with Mayweather and Canelo and now Garcia and Matthysse,” said President of Golden Boy PromotionsOscar De La Hoya. “September 14 will be one of the most memorable nights of boxing we have been treated to in a long time.”

“Garcia vs. Matthysse is a fight fan’s dream matchup,” said Stephen Espinoza, Executive Vice President and General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports®. “It is a main event-quality fight by itself. To add it to what is already the biggest pay-per-view main event in years, makes the September 14 event the best PPV card in recent memory.”

Garcia (26-0, 20 KO’s) is a popular and crowd-pleasing fighter in the prime of his career. In his last start, the 25-year-old boxer-puncher registered one knockdown en route to successfully defending his 140-pound titles with a clear, hard-fought unanimous decision win over former Four-Time World Champion Judah on April 27 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. The victory over Judah continued Garcia’s streak of sensational performances against high-profile opposition that began a year earlier when he defeated the legendary Morales the first time via a unanimous decision to capture the WBC world title. The following July, Garcia shocked Khan and the boxing world with a stunning fourth-round technical knockout of the British superstar to add the WBA Super and Ring Magazine World Championships to his collection. On Oct. 20, 2012, Garcia knocked Morales out with a hellacious left hook in the fourth round of their rematch. A 2008 U.S. Olympic Team alternate, Garcia is a physically strong, durable and determined young fighter who is poised and patient in the ring who has fought current or past world champions in his last six fights: Judah, Khan, Morales twice, Kendall Holt and Nate Campbell.

The demand for Garcia vs. Matthysse began immediately after Matthysse brutally knocked out Peterson, dropping him three times, this past May 18 in Atlantic City, N.J.

Matthysse (34-2, 32 KO’s), who is rated No. 1 at 140 lbs. by The RING Magazine, has scored a staggering 94 percent of his wins by knockout, one of the highest KO percentages for a world champion in history. The 30-year-old hails from Trelew, Argentina and has won six fights in a row by knockout. In his last nine fights, he has fought five world champions defeating Peterson (TKO 3), Humberto Soto (TKO 5) and DeMarcus Corley (TKO 8) and losing extremely close, questionable 10-round split decisions against Devon Alexander and Judah in his opponents’ home towns. Many observers think he deserved to win both of those fights. Matthysse, who constantly pressures his opponents and wears them down, was also a solid amateur boxer in his native Argentina.

“I think Marrero is a stud,” Iron Mike Productions promoter Garry Jonas said. “I expect him to handle Cuellar and show his skills on national TV. And Mendez-Usmanee will be an entertaining fight. Usmanee is a go forward guy and Mendez loves guys who come forward. We knew he had an optional defense we could make before we’d have to fight Barthelemy, so we figured let’s give Usmanee the shot because we thought he beat Barthelemy.”

“We’ve been around going on two years and we have a champion [Mendez], some ranked fighters and a lot of good talent, but we weren’t getting the TV dates,” Jonas said. “There’s not enough to go around from HBO, Showtime, ESPN and the others. We had to do something to bring notoriety and attention and Mike was the perfect fit.

“We brought Mike down to see what we were doing at Acquinity Sports. We have our fighters live and train with us in Florida. We give them a really disciplined environment. We really wanted to put more organization in it, make it like a team. When Mike saw what we were doing he said it reminded him of what it was like when he was with [late trainer and adoptive father] Cus D’Amato when he was young. Hopefully, he will bring us some of the attention we need. But besides that he will help us with the young fighters, work with them, help recruit them. We hope to do some interesting things.”

Said Henry Rivalta, who heads boxing operations for the company, “Mike sees how we are a mentor for the fighters, a situation that he had with Cus. He was happy with what he saw from us and he said he is going all in.”

Juan Diaz to return on August 17th on Top Rank show

Juan Diaz
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Former Lightweight champion Juan Diaz will return on August 17th against Adailton DeJesis in Laredo, Texas under the Top Rank banner that will be televised bu UniMas.

“I feel good and, of course, I felt good getting the ‘W’ against Cuevas,” Diaz told ESPN.com on Wednesday. “I haven’t had that feeling of winning in a while. I had to find my balance. It took about three rounds to get comfortable and find my distance, but once I got the feel of being back in there I felt good. It went as planned and I won. I saw that I needed to take one or two more of those kind of fights.

“Clearly, Juan showed in that last fight that there’s a lot left,” said Carl Moretti of Top Rank, which signed Diaz to a one-fight deal. “This isn’t a guy doing it for the money. He’s successful outside the ring (as owner of a trucking company) and he’s a smart guy (as a college graduate). He still wants to fight and his style has always been fan-friendly. That hasn’t changed. We’re looking forward to the fight on Aug. 17 and then we’ll see where we go from there.”

“It’s a one-fight deal,” said Moretti, who was close to Diaz when he turned pro with Main Events, where Moretti worked for several years as its matchmaker. “I met with Juan and (adviser) Brian Caldwell in Dallas (last month) at the Mikey Garcia fight. I’ve known Juan since his pro debut and we have a great relationship.

“We’ll take it step by step, but I’m looking forward to working with him for this fight and, hopefully, beyond. He’s in a division that we have a lot of interest in and it seems like it will be an interesting division in the next year.”

“He’s lost against top-level opponents,” Diaz said. “He’s a strong fighter, a durable guy and this is a step up. That’s helpful for me. I don’t want to be in the sport to take a punch. I want to become champion again and by stepping up the level of opposition and being victorious, it shows me I still have a lot left in the tank.

“So far things are going according to plan. The ideal situation is I would love to fight two more times this year, Aug. 17 and then another one and then start 2014 fast, you know fight a top contender or a world champion.”

Salido to battle Cruz for Vacant Featherweight crown on Bradley – Marquez card

Orlando_Salido_2 (208x138)
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, former Featherweight champion Orlando Salido will take on Orlando Cruz for a vacant Featherweight title on October 12th as part of the Timothy Bradley – Juan Manuel Marquez card in Las Vegas.

“We’re very happy to have this fight on the card,” said Top Rank’s Bob Arum. “Sean Gibbons (Salido’s manager) says there is no way Salido is losing and the other side says there is no way that Cruz doesn’t beat Salido because they say he is a shot fighter. I think it’s a good competitive fight and an interesting fight.”

“For Salido, he has fared well against southpaws from Puerto Rico [Lopez] and won’t be at all intimidated by the magnitude of this event,” Top Rank vice president Carl Moretti said. “For Cruz, this is clearly his toughest fight of his career. He is already a champion outside the ring for standing up and proclaiming his openness.”

Arum said Cruz being the first openly gay fighter is no issue for him and has nothing to do with how he will promote the fight.

“I couldn’t give a s— if he’s gay, straight, whatever,” Arum said. “I don’t even give it a second thought. We’re not going to make it part of our publicity. For me, it’s a non-issue. Who cares about his sexual orientation? I care if he can fight. When a guy first comes out of the closet, OK, so maybe it’s a story and I can see why it might be news. But once that happens, it’s not news any more as far as I am concerned.

“It’s a very good opportunity for us,” said All-Star Boxing promoter Tuto Zabala Jr., who promotes Cruz and said he signed the contract for the fight on Monday night. “It’s a great platform to be on. [Cruz] has been in training camp and will be in the best shape in his career. I believe Orlando has all the tools to defeat Salido and become the first gay fighter to win a world title.”
