RAMLA ALI PUTS ON BOXING CLINIC WITH SAUDI GIRLS AHEAD OF HISTORY-MAKING FIGHT

Ramla Ali put on a boxing session with young girls in Saudi Arabia on Thursday ahead of her history-making bout against Crystal Nova Garcia at the Rage on the Red Sea this Saturday.

Ali is used to making history having become England’s first Muslim fighter to claim an amateur title in the country and she will etch her name into the record books alongside her opponent as they become the first females to fight professionally in Saudi Arabia.

The country is harnessing sport as a tool for transformation and, since Anthony Joshua and Andy Ruiz Jr. headlined the Clash of the Dunes in 2019, the Kingdom there has been a 150 percent uptake in female sports participation.

Boxing as a whole has seen a 300 percent jump in Saudis take up the sport and the Saudi Arabian Boxing Federation is aiming to get 500,000 people inspired by boxing over the next four years.

The increased interest in the sport and matching ambition of the governing body was evidenced at Jeddah’s Waad Academy, where Ali conducted a 45-minute training session with local coaches and 35 Saudi girls and women between 15 to 30-years-old who represent governmental and private clubs across the country.

“The organisers inviting myself to compete and allowing this fight to go ahead really shows you the cultural shift in the landscape that is happening in the region,” said Ali. “I hope myself and my opponent, as well as the full card, competing in Saudi Arabia inspires future generations. It’s been wonderful to spend time with this group of girls today and I hope they truly believe their ambition is limitless.”

Alongside Ali was Rasha Al Khamis, the country’s first certified female boxer and boxing coach, as well as a part-time footballer, Guinness World Record-holder and she currently serves as vice-president of the Saudi Arabian Boxing Federation.

Al Khamis herself has inspired women from all over the country and is hoping that Ali’s presence both at Waad Academy and at the Rage on the Red Sea will lead to even more of her countrywomen to give boxing a go – or any other sport for that matter.

“Training programmes are very important, not only for the athletes but to develop coaches and referees, the more we have the more competitions can be organised, which helps to identify promising talent,” Rasha said. “We are constantly in the process of providing more training and increasing the number of competitions nationally and regionally, as well as looking into more programs that pave the way for future athletes. It’s so exciting to see the growing interest in the sport, especially following some of the incredible boxing spectacles we have like this weeks Rage on the Red Sea.”

The Saudi Arabian Boxing Federation’s president, Abdullah Al Harbi, and CEO, Amr Abdel Binhassan, also oversaw the clinic, alongside Matchroom Sport Chairman, Eddie Hearn.

Rage on the Red Sea takes place at the King Abdullah Sports City Arena in Jeddah on Saturday, with Joshua’s bid to recapture his Heavyweight world titles from Oleksandr Usyk at the top of the billing.

As well as Ali versus Nova Garcia delivering a first for boxing in Saudi Arabia, local boxer, Ziyad Almaayouf, will become the first professional fighter from his country to feature on a major international card.

Undefeated middleweight prospect Nico Ali Walsh (5-0, 4 KOs), grandson of Muhammad Ali, returns in a four-round rematch versus Reyes Sanchez (7-2, 3 KOs). Undercard bouts will stream live and exclusively on ESPN+ (6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m PT) and includes an eight-round junior welterweight showdown between undefeated Mexican prospects Lindolfo Delgado (15-0, 13 KOs) and Omar “Pollo” Aguilar (24-0, 23 KOs).Tickets starting at $35 can be purchased at AXS.com.

At Thursday’s press conference, this is what the fighters had to say.

Emanuel Navarrete

“I feel really good. We had a great preparation. We’re going to be making a really good return. It is a bit hard to make the weight because of the time that we were away from the ring. But aside from that, there’s nothing that worries me about being able to make this defense of my championship in excellent fashion.”

“I think Baez is coming with a strong desire to win. He is very well conditioned, and that can make for a great fight. I’ve also prepared very well. We both want this world championship. I have it, but he wants to snatch it away from me. That can make for a great fight from the start. So, I think this fight will lend itself to being a great matchup. We hope that Baez comes out very strong, that we both last the 12 rounds, and that we fight at a very high level.”

“I’m very happy to be returning after the layoff. We hope that my career is going on a good path so that I can keep growing in this new era with Top Rank.”

Eduardo Baez

“I’m very happy because we are fighting for a world title, which is the dream come true for any boxer. We felt really good during our preparation, and we’re coming in great condition. We are very excited to be in this position.”

“It’s an important fight for a world title. We’re coming double prepared. We are so happy to be fighting against a great champion like ‘El Vaquero.’ We thank him for the opportunity. We’ve come very prepared to snatch the title from him. I’ve seen it already. It’s very nice. He better not get careless because I’m going to snatch it away.”

Giovani Santillan

It’s exciting for me to be fighting in San Diego again. It’ll be my second time fighting at Pechanga Arena. It’s really a dream come true. Ever since I was an amateur, I’ve been dreaming about fighting in these big venues. To be on ESPN with Top Rank means everything to me, so I’ve been working hard for this.”

“He’s an undefeated fighter like me. So, when you have something like that, it lights up a fire inside me to train extra hard. So, I’m ready. I’m ready for whatever he brings to the table.”

Julio Luna

This is the opportunity of my career. I come from a family of champions. My sister is a world champion. My objective is to be world champion, and this is the opportunity that will open the path towards that in my career.”

“You will all see the best Julio Luna of my career. This is my opportunity. I plan to leave everything in the ring so I can obtain the victory. I prepared very well. I am ready to win both mentally and physically.”

Nico Ali Walsh

“Honestly, I feel like there’s a lot to prove. That was the start of my career. That was my third fight, and I have been improving beyond what everyone thought I could. It’s exciting that we get to do this, and I think I’ll have a good time. I truly think my last few fights have spoken for themselves, and it shows how hard I’ve been working.”

Reyes Sanchez

“It’s not very often in life that you get a second chance. I’m glad it’s going through. Thank you to everyone who made it happen. I’ve rewatched the fight plenty of times. I think gave him a tougher fight than they were expecting. I expect the same thing Saturday night.”

Lindolfo Delgado

This is a great opportunity here with Top Rank. I’m very happy. It’s going to be a really good fight. I know that a lot of people are looking forward to this fight because of the kind of fighters we are and because of the record that each of us has. I think it’s going to be really good, so don’t miss it. This is an opportunity that we have both been looking for, and it’s the kind of fight we need to move forward in our careers.”

Omar Aguilar

“It’s the right time because we both have good records. This is the moment in which fighters begin to rise in the ranks so that bigger opportunities can come. Like I’ve always said, I always prepare for the rounds I’m scheduled to fight for. I know he is a strong opponent who boxes really well. And if it goes the distance, I’ll be ready.”

LUIS ORTIZ & RA’EESE ALEEM LAS VEGAS MEDIA WORKOUT QUOTES

LAS VEGAS – August 18, 2022 – Top heavyweight contender Luis “King Kong” Ortiz held a media workout in Las Vegas on Thursday as he nears his WBC Heavyweight Title Eliminator against former unified champion Andy “The Destroyer” Ruiz Jr. taking place September 4 in Labor Day Weekend action headlining a FOX Sports PBC Pay-Per-View from Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

Also featured at Thursday’s workout was unbeaten super bantamweight contender Ra’eese Aleem as he nears his showdown against Mike Plania which highlights PBC action on FS1 and FOX Deportes ahead of the pay-per-view event.

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by TGB Promotions, are on sale now and can be purchased online at AXS.com.

The media workout was live streamed on the Premier Boxing Champions YouTube page and can be viewed HERE. The workout also included an interview with former WBC Heavyweight World Champion Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder, who is currently training in Las Vegas for his FOX Sports PBC Pay-Per-View showdown against Robert “The Nordic Nightmare” Helenius on Saturday, October 15 and offered his take on the Ruiz vs. Ortiz clash.

“I’m going with my heart, and Luis Ortiz is a fighter with heart,” said Wilder, who defeated Ortiz in a pair of heavyweight title defenses, Ortiz’s only two defeats. “Why do you think so many other fighters wouldn’t give him a chance? ”

Here is what the participants had to say Thursday from Las Vegas Fight Club:

LUIS ORTIZ

“I feel so good both physically and mentally. I’m eagerly awaiting this fight and you’re not going to want to miss it when we get in that ring.

“After I fought Charles Martin, I was back in the gym a week later. Whether I have a fight or not, I’m always active and staying ready.

“I respect Deontay Wilder a lot and I appreciate him picking me in this fight. My intention is to knock out Andy Ruiz. One of us is getting knocked out and I can guarantee this one doesn’t go to the judges.

“I have studied Andy from top to bottom. If I don’t knock you out with one punch, then I’m just going to chip away at you until you can’t go anymore.

“Training camp is winding down and it’s exciting. We’re just waiting for camp to be over and for fight night to begin. My objective is always the same and it doesn’t change. I’m trying to do whatever it takes to beat my opponent.

“Every training camp is different and we’ve made adjustments now just like we have in the past. We’re going to show those adjustments and improvements when the fight comes.

“I’m just focused on myself and doing my job. What’s going to cause Ruiz trouble in there is me, regardless of what kind of style I’m using.

“I’m always trying to reach the top of the mountain. I want the top prize. This is a very important fight for me, but so is every fight. They all get me closer to another world title shot.

“It’s all about training, training and more training. I feel better now than I did when I was 25.”

RA’EESE ALEEM

“This is a huge fight. I’m excited. It’s going to be electric fighting on a huge card. I’m fighting for the number one spot again and I can’t wait. I’m going to put on a show, be the best version of myself and make it all happen.

“I want to fight all the top fighters in the division. My ultimate goal is to become world champion and I have to beat the top guys to get there. Me and Plania both have a lot of momentum right now and that makes it a great fight.

“I’m an exciting fighter and I throw punches in bunches and come forward. I don’t hold and I don’t run. He says he wants to go toe-to-toe, so it’s going to be a great fight for the fans.

“This has the potential to be the fight of the night and I believe it will be. We’re both bringing our A-games. This is a fight everyone should tune in for and I can’t wait.

“I’ve been following my dreams and just trying to make everything happen. Plania is an extremely tough fighter who’s faced some top guys. I believe that if I’m the best version of myself I’m not only capable of winning, but of dominating the fight.

“Every training camp is semi-the same, you just tweak some things or tighten something up. The grind is the grind and it doesn’t stop.

“I love to make an action fight. It’s just the beast in me. I don’t care if I’m up on the scorecards in the final round, I’m trying to get him out of there. I don’t like to take a chance with the judges. I have to be smart against a good fighter, but I’m definitely working to get on the inside.

“I take care of my body. I do what champions have to do to be the best that I can be. I feel like I’m in my prime and still getting better and better. You’re always evolving in this sport and I believe the best is yet to come.

“My ultimate goal is to be the mandatory to fight for a world title. I want the world title fight next no matter who it’s against. Stephen Fulton is a great fighter and a strong technical fighter. He’s earned those belts and it’s my job to take them away from him.”

HERMAN CAICEDO, Ortiz’s Trainer

“Ortiz has been even more focused and more lasered in, and that says a lot. He’s always ready and puts his heart 100% into everything we do. He never leaves the gym and I have to tell him to take it easy.

“The level of focus that he’s shown is a testament to who he is and what he believes in. I’m very happy with what he’s doing this camp.

“He’s not just more motivated, but he’s out-performing the young guys in what we do in the gym. He’s also very strong mentally and I think that’s his biggest attribute. That’s why he’s still here at this age.

“What I know is that Luis and I trust one another in what we’re doing. I don’t know how much chemistry Ruiz and his corner have at this point, so if things get muddy will he trust his corner? I know that my corner will and I will trust him.

“In the end it’s going to come down to skill, dedication, who put in the hard work and who wants it more.”

BOBBY MCROY, Aleem’s Trainer

“Mike Plania is a picture of our previous opponents. People aren’t really recognizing how slick he is, but he wants to fight. He definitely wants to come forward, but we’re going to make him back up.

“We follow the flow of the fight. We make our own fight. We dictate what goes on in the ring. That’s what ring generalship is.

“I don’t mind that Ra’eese likes to gamble in the ring sometimes, you just have to gamble smartly. He has that bravado to fight on the inside, but you still have defensive responsibilities.

“We want to send a chilling message that Aleem is number one at 122. We’re going to put on a show and make a big statement. We’re telling the champions that you have to fight us eventually.”

Getting another win on my record will help me get closer to my goal of fighting for a small title by the end of the year. I am excited to face tougher opponents as my career develops. As my record improves, I look forward to taking on bigger challenges on bigger stages.”

Estela should be on a two-fight knockout streak, but his fight before his last bout, a technical knockout, saw his opponent get disqualified for excessive holding. Standing six-feet tall, Estela has the size and power to become a name in the welterweight division.

“Estela is a unique fighter, who has a long frame, a skill set, and a mindset not seen in his division,” said Mike Leanardi, CEO of FightStars, who manages Estela. “I have big plans for Estela, and I see him as a major factor in his division for the next decade. This is just another step in the process of him getting closer to the top of the division.

ESTRADA TOPS WORLD TITLE TRIPLE-HEADER IN MEXICO ON SEPT 3, LIVE WORLDWIDE ON DAZN

August 18, 2022 – Juan Francisco Estrada makes his highly anticipated return to the ring defending his WBC Franchise and Ring Magazine World Super-Flyweight titles against Argi Cortes on Saturday September 3 from Centro de Usos Multiples in Hermosillo, Mexico and broadcast live to all subscribers worldwide on DAZN – topping a World title triple-header as Erika Cruz and Jelena Mrdjenovich meet in a rematch for the WBA World Featherweight title rematch and Hector Flores and Sivenathi Nontshinga clash for the vacant IBF World Flyweight title

Fans will be thrilled to see Estrada (42-3 28 KOs) make a welcome return to the ring, with the Mexican back through the ropes for the first time since edging out Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez in their epic rematch in Dallas in March 2021. ‘El Gallo’ welcomes Cortes to his hometown and the same arena he stopped Dewayne Beamon in August 2019, and the Hermosillo hero will want to put on another show for his fans. Cortes (23-2-2 10 KOs) lands the biggest fight of his career in his 28th pro outing, with the Mexico City man aiming upset his fellow countryman and become a household name overnight.

There are two more World title bouts on the bill, starting with the long-awaited rematch between Cruz and Mrdjenovich for the WBA World Featherweight title. Cruz (14-1 3 KOs) ripped the title from long-time champion Mrdjenovich (41-11-2 19 KOs) in April 2021, with the Mexican ending the five-year rule of the Canadian on the cards after an accidental headclash halted the contest after seven rounds. Cruz successfully defended the belt in Puerto Vallarta in November via split decision over Melissa Esquivel, while the former champion returns for the first time since the first battle.

The vacant IBF World Flyweight title is on the line between unbeaten pair Flores and Nontshinga. Both men taste their first World title action as Tijuana’s Flores (20-0-4 10 KOs) builds on his victory over Welsh World title challenger Jay Harris in Wales in November, while hard-punching Nontshinga (10-0 9 KOs) fights outside his native South Africa for the first time and comes into the bout on the back of his first points win in his tenth bout having beaten his previous nine foes inside the distance.

Also featuring on the card is Super-Featherweight dangerman Eduardo Hernandez, defending his WBC Silver International title against Jorge Mata. Hernandez (32-1 29 KOs) pulled off a stunning victory last time out, blitzing Jorge Castaneda inside a round in Guadalajara in June to land the title he defends against Mata (14-0-2 10 KOs), the unbeaten 21 year old Tijuana native who fights for his first pro title.

“It’s great to be back and I’m very excited that I’ll get to fight in front of all the Sonoran fans and in front of my growing family,” said Estrada. “Thanks to all those who helped make this happen. Whenever two Mexicans go at it you can always expect a war and this fight against Cortes will be another great Mexican battle in Hermosillo. We’re ready to put on another great show and get back in action to show the fans that El Gallo is one of the best in boxing.”

“I’m very excited for this great opportunity to fight Estrada,” said Cortes. “I will give everything I have for the victory; I will surprise the world. I have Mr. Nacho Beristain on my corner and we have a great game plan to defeat a legend like Estrada.”

“I am so excited to get back in the ring,” said Cruz. “I want to retire Jelena once it for all and go after the unification fight!”

“I’m really excited to get back into the ring again,” said Mrdjenovich. “We have been working hard to put this fight together for some time and I want to thank Eric Gomez for closing the deal finally.

“Training has been fun and exciting again. I am looking forward to coming to Mexico to get my belt back in a big way.”

“This is the opportunity that I have always dreamed of, and I will make the most of it,” said Flores. “It gives me more motivation for to bring it to Mexico and with the aim of giving Mexico and Tijuana a new World champion.”

“Am looking forward to this contest,” said Nontshinga. “I have been training very hard for this and look forward to becoming World Champion in Mexico.”

“I’m in a very good place mentally, emotionally and physically,” said Hernandez. “My team has been keeping me active and that’s all I wanted, God willing after this win I want to take on the biggest names in my division.”

“I’m currently at my best and this is a long-waited opportunity for me,” said Mata. “I have a lot of respect for Rocky Hernandez, but this is my time to show the world what I’m made of. I am ready to be at this level, I will win no matter how.”

“This is a brilliant line-up for what promises to be another explosive night of action in Mexico,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “It’s great to see Juan Francisco back in the ring at a time when the Super-Flyweight division is just stacked with great fights, and I expect him to lay down a marker as the top dog in Mexico.

“Erika and Jelena have been itching to get the rematch on and they will leave it all in the ring, there’s a golden opportunity for either Hector or Sivenathi to take a seat at the top table at 108lbs and ‘Rocky’ Hernandez always brings fireworks when he steps through the ropes. Our shows in Mexico have delivered must-see action from first bell to last, and I expect more of the same on September 3.”

“We are thrilled to have Estrada back fighting again on DAZN,” said Joseph Markowski EVP DAZN Group. “He will join some of the biggest names in the sport fighting on DAZN in 2022 with Usyk vs. AJ this Saturday, Canelo vs. GGG trilogy fight on Sept 17, and perhaps the biggest UK fight this decade in Eubank Jr vs. Benn in October. All these and more will be shown live this fall on DAZN.”

IRISH LIGHTWEIGHT STAR GARY CULLY SIGNS WITH MATCHROOM

Ireland’s undefeated Lightweight star Gary Cully has signed a long-term promotional deal with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing.

The 26-year-old from Naas earned an impressive career-best win last time out when he stopped former Lightweight World Champion Miguel Vazquez in five rounds on the huge Leigh Wood vs. Mick Conlan World Title bill in Nottingham.

‘The Diva’, who fights out of the Colosseum Gym and Unit 3 Fitness under the guidance of trainers Pete Taylor and Niall Barrett, has won all fourteen of his fights since turning professional in September 2017 at the Devenish Complex in Belfast.

Cully claimed the Irish Lightweight Title by wiping out Belfast’s Joe Fitzpatrick in the opening round of their clash at Ulster Hall in 2020 before adding the WBO European Title to his collection with a second-round stoppage win over Viktor Kotochigov at the Bolton White Hotel in 2021.

“I’m really excited to be joining the Matchroom Boxing team,” said Cully. “I’ve had my sights set on joining Matchroom long before I turned professional so to finally be here is massive for me. My last fight was on a Matchroom card back in March – the huge Wood vs. Conlan bill. I saw how they did things and it reminded me that this is where I wanted to be. I’m glad to finally get it over the line.

“I’ve always said that with the right promotional team and the right backing I believe I can reach the very top of this sport and be a huge name in boxing. I believe that with Matchroom behind me I’m in the right place to do that. I’ve got big dreams in boxing; I want to be involved in the biggest fights with the biggest names. I want the likes of Gervonta Davis, Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney.

“With Eddie and Matchroom backing me I’m in the right place to make these fights happen. I also have big dreams of brining big-time boxing home one day. I remember going to The O2 arena back in the day to see Bernard Dunne win his World Title when I was just a kid starting out in boxing. Ever since then I’ve dreamed of bringing boxing back home and having big fights back in Dublin one day. The ball is in my court now.

“I just need to keep putting those performances in that I have been in the last two years. I think the performance that I put in against Miguel Vazquez in March proved the level that I’m capable of operating at. He’s a former World Champion that has fought the likes of Canelo Alvarez and Timothy Bradley. He came over to the UK in the past and gave some big names a few problems there as well. The skills I showed and the way I got him out of there in the end proved that I can operate at the highest level.”

“I’m delighted to add rising Lightweight star Gary Cully to the growing Matchroom Boxing team,” said Matchroom Sport Chairman Eddie Hearn. “I was hugely impressed with how he dealt with former IBF Lightweight World Champion Miguel Vazquez on our show back in March after so many had previously struggled with him. I’m confident that win is a sign of things to come for one of Ireland’s most talented fighters. The Lightweight division is up there as the most exciting division in boxing and Gary has huge confidence in himself to make his own mark on it. With the backing of Matchroom Gary has all of the tools he needs to achieve his dreams.”

OMAR FIGUEROA JR. VS. SERGEY LIPINETS FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – August 18, 2022 – All-action former world champion Omar “Panterita” Figueroa Jr. acknowledged the difficult test in front of him when he faces former world champion Sergey Lipinets in a 12-round WBC Super Lightweight Title Eliminator headlining live on SHOWTIME this Saturday, August 20 from Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla. in a Premier Boxing Champions Event. At Thursday’s press conference, Figueroa admitted he was teeming with excitement and eager to show the fruits of a great training camp, while Lipinets believes he and Figueroa have the styles to produce a fan-friendly clash.

The press conference also featured top 140-pounders Alberto Puello and Batyr Akhmedov, who square off for the vacant WBA Super Lightweight World Championship in the co-main event, WBA Super Featherweight World Champion Roger Gutierrez and unbeaten Hector Garcia ahead of their world title showdown and unbeaten prospect Brandun Lee and Will Madera, who kick off the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® telecast at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. Puello and Garcia, both hometown friends from the Dominican Republic, are hoping to bring about arguably the greatest day in Dominican boxing history with title-winning efforts, while Akhmedov and Gutierrez hope to stymie them and produce their own highlights and milestones.

Additionally, SHOWTIME SPORTS® will offer live streaming coverage of unbeaten Cuban heavyweight standout Lenier Peró battling Joel Caudle in an eight-round bout and undefeated middleweight Fiodor Czerkaszyn taking on Gilbert Venegas Jr. in an eight-round duel via the SHOWTIME Sports YouTube channel and SHOWTIME Boxing Facebook page prior to the start of the televised quadrupleheader. The streaming show begins at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT and will be called by SHOBOX® analyst and MORNING KOMBAT host Brian Campbell alongside former unified welterweight world champion Keith “One Time” Thurman joining as guest analyst.

Tickets for the live event are on sale now and can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com.

Stepping in for four-division world champion Adrien Broner on short notice, Lipinets promised action on Saturday night, while Figueroa remained steadfast that he will bring the fight, no matter who his opponent is. Here is what the fighters had to say Thursday from Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino:

OMAR FIGUEROA JR.

“Obviously we were preparing for a certain style, but the fight fell through, so I just have to take all my experience and the things I’ve learned all these years and apply it toward Sergey. He’s no pushover and he’s a former world champion. We know we have our hands full.

“All the troubles with camp, and dealing with the weight cut and all that camp entails, I was hoping to take it out on Broner. And now I have to take it out on Sergey. It’s me against him.

“I’ve been a fighter for 27 years now, and the sport hasn’t always been the nicest to me. We all know about my mental health struggles, but for the first time I got to enjoy training camp. I got to enjoy dealing with all that a training camp provides. If this is my last fight, I’d be happy with that. But I know I’m not done, and I have a lot left in the tank. I love this sport too much and there’s not anything else that would fulfill me the same. I’m excited for Saturday. I’m pumped like I’ve never been before. I finally got to enjoy myself and I think I’m going to enjoy Saturday night. I’m looking forward to a war with Lipinets.

“We have seen some video of him. It hasn’t been hard to find. So we know more or less what to expect.

“I have no problem with Broner not taking the fight because of mental health. I’m trying to advocate and get more people to take care of their mental health. But for him to use it as cop out, that’s what annoyed me.

“With anyone struggling with their mental health, the most important thing is to reach out to a friend or neighbor and know that you’re not alone. Life’s not easy. It’s a constant struggle and an everyday battle. We have to stay strong and rely on each other and have each other’s back. Just love each other and that’s the best we can do.”

SERGEY LIPINETS

“I first want to thank Omar, and Broner, for making this happen. These things happen and sometimes there are pull-outs at the last moment. We were getting ready for whatever comes. We’re ready and we just want to show the best fight for the fans of boxing.

“My last loss [to Jaron Ennis] was at 147 pounds, so I’m going back to 140 and I want to be world champion again and show that I’m a force to be reckoned with.

“We just made a decision as a team and realized that 147 was not right for me. I’m more comfortable at 140 and made weight no problem. We had a great camp and had different opponents thrown at us and at the end of the day, I feel great. It took some time and I’ve had many different opponents thrown at me. It’s been frustrating at times but I never complained and I knew that hard work always pays off.

“Everyone knows what I do in the ring and what Omar does in the ring. It’s going to be a great scrap stylistically. We’re not going be looking for each other and not dancing around. It’s going to be a straight-forward fight and may the best man win.”

ALBERTO PUELLO

“I want to thank my whole team and everyone who is here today. Becoming a world champion on Saturday night would mean so much to me.

“A win would change my life forever and change my family’s life forever. It would just mean so much to me. Becoming a world champion would be life-altering.

“If he’s so confident and he thinks he’s going to beat me, then let’s do it. That’s why we’re fighting on Saturday.

“There’s no doubt that Hector Garcia and I are going to win on Saturday. It will be a great victory for our families, for ourselves and for the Dominican Republic. It will be a time to celebrate and a day to never forget.”

BATYR AKHMEDOV

“First of all, I want to say thank you so much to SHOWTIME for this opportunity. For me, this is a really important fight for my career and winning a world title would be a huge deal.

“The first time I fought for a world title, I thought I was robbed of a decision. I believe I won that fight.

“Nothing will stop me this time in this fight. It doesn’t matter who’s against me – King Kong could step into the ring against me, and it wouldn’t matter.

“Just make 140 pounds and meet me in the ring and I’ll be ready to fight.

“My priority is to make sure this fight ends in a knockout. I don’t want to let this fight go to the judge’s scorecards and I will try to make sure the fight ends that way.”

ROGER GUTIERREZ

“We’re prepared, mentally and physically. I’m ready to take this challenge.

“It doesn’t matter what Garcia says. Every boxer has to have that mentality. I’m ready to show that I can beat him. He can’t look past me.

“I respect him as a fighter, I respect all fighters. I know he’s confident because he just beat Chris Colbert. I’m confident too and I’m ready.

“The year layoff doesn’t affect me at all. When I fought for the world title, that was also a one-year layoff. You saw what happened there. It probably helped me. I feel great and you’re going to see on Saturday night.

“Garcia and Chris Colbert had a great fight. Garcia did his thing. I don’t want to take anything away from him, but I think anyone that night would have beaten Colbert. Colbert was overconfident. Once his fight against me got postponed, he overlooked Garcia. That’s what hurt him.

“I don’t base myself on just one thing. I know the statistics show that I’m powerful, but I bring a lot of things to the ring. My focus is on Saturday night. Our goal is to win round by round, but if the opportunity for a knockout comes, I’m ready to take it.”

HECTOR GARCIA

“I’m going to prove the oddsmakers wrong again. That motivates me to do better in the ring and to become a champion. I want to be that man Saturday night. I want to win.

“I’m challenging to become a world champion for the first time. It means a lot. It means everything to my country to become the fourth world champion there.

“I want to be a world champion. This is my opportunity. I have always had confidence in myself. When I beat Chris Colbert, my confidence grew even more, so I believe in myself now more than ever.

“Alberto Puello and I are old friends. We’ve been friends since we were younger and came from the same town in the Dominican Republic. We’ve both had pretty good careers. If he wins, I’m going to be happy and if I win, he’ll be happy. It’s all love. Both of us winning titles would be something great for each of us personally and for our families and then for our country. We know we have a whole country behind us, and we want to do it for them and for ourselves.”

BRANDUN LEE

“My last fight showed me I can go 10 rounds strong. I never really deteriorated throughout the fight and there was never a question that I could be strong from Round 1 to Round 10.

“I never overlook my opponent because at the end of the day, he has two hands and you have to respect anyone that steps in the ring. I’m going to go in there and do what I do, which is get the knockout. So today I’m 25-0 and come Saturday night it will be 26-0.

“I just have to keep doing what I’ve been doing. I have to go in there with a brain, don’t be dumb and look for the knockout right away. If it comes, it comes. I’ve already gone 10 rounds and I have no problem going another 10. Just be smart.

“I love being here on SHOWTIME. Every time I come near SHOWTIME they give me the full red carpet experience and I just really appreciate everything that SHOWTIME has done for me.”

WILL MADERA

“I plan on showing that I’m the veteran fighter on Saturday night. Tune in and I’ll show you what I can do. I feel they’re overlooking me because I’m coming up from lightweight, so I’m a smaller guy naturally. I’ve been overlooked in most of my fights.

“Being the underdog is something I look forward to. Upsetting opponents is my thing.

I’m going to steal the show, so tune in Saturday night and don’t miss the first bell.

“Brandun Lee is a strong, young, up-and-coming-fighter. I expect him to come in strong, especially early in the fight.

“This is the second time I’m fighting at 140. I do feel more comfortable at 140 but this is all about the opportunity here. This is going to be a firefight.

“A win here would mean a lot. It will move me closer to a world title fight. Whether at 135 or 140, that’s what I’m aiming for.”

Tickets priced at $50$75$100 & $125, will only be available for purchase at the door the day of the event, which will take place at the Omega Products International Event Center in Corona, CA. Doors open at 6:30 pm PT with the first fight starting at 8:00 pm PT.

Here is what Corona had to say about his recent training camp, his upcoming fight with fellow undefeated foe, Pedro Valencia, and more.

On his recent training camp:

“I have been pushed to the limit. This camp has been tireless, this is the moment I have been waiting for, to fight an undefeated fighter and prove to myself and everyone watching that I’m a world class fighter. It’s has been nothing short of exhausting. I am finishing each-and-every workout going hard, only to do it again, day after day. I have never had a camp like this, but I know on fight night I’ll be at my very best.”

On his matchup with Valencia:

“Valencia is a tough fighter who is undefeated for a reason. He had a close fight recently and I’ve seen some holes in his game. You can tell he has power, but I don’t think much of his ring intelligence. He just comes forward and looks to land something big, and that’s it. I am a crafty boxer with a lot of heart. I’m expecting this to be a war. If he underestimates me, he will be in a lot trouble.”

On what a win will do for his career:

“Winning fixes everything. If you win in boxing, even if it is a bad win, you get more chances. I am here to continue my families legacy of greatness in boxing, and I feel a draw in my last fight put some doubt in people’s minds about my potential. Winning this fight puts me in a different place in the sport of boxing.”

On fighting on a Thompson Boxing card in Sothern California:

“Thompson Boxing is an L.A. institution that has built a lot of great fighters, and to get a major fight on one of their cards that defines my career, is an honor. I’m an L.A. fighter through and through, and it’s only fitting that I have one of my biggest fights with them with all my fans in attendance.”

Beto Duran will operate as the blow-by-blow commentator with expert commentary by Doug Fischer and Rich MarottaJessica Rosales will serve as the onsite ringside reporter.

This event is sponsored by HUSTLER Casino, LA’s only luxury casino; Thompson Building Materials, Transforming spaces into beautiful places; Omega Products International, The leading stucco manufacturer in the United States; Belgard, Paves the way; and Makita, Rule the outdoors.

BLUE-CHIP PROSPECT FLOYD “KID AUSTIN” SCHOFIELD SIGNS CO-PROMOTIONAL DEAL WITH GOLDEN BOY

LOS ANGELES, CA (August 18, 2022) – Exciting, blue-chip prospect Floyd “Kid Austin” Schofield (11-0, 9 KOs) has signed a co-promotional deal with Golden Boy. The 19-year-old lightweight fighter from Austin, Texas will be co-promoted with Davies Entertainment.

“Being with Golden Boy Promotions is a dream come true,” said Floyd Schofield. “I get to learn from two legends – Oscar De La Hoya and Bernard Hopkins – that I studied for years. My dad always told me this was all going to happen. To see it really happen, is beyond words. Now I have to do my part and win.”

A pugilist working out of Richard Lord’s Boxing gym that has seen the likes of Jesus Chavez and James Kirkland walk through its doors, his training and sparring resume features a long list of current and up-and-coming world champions.

“The feeling of excitement to bring Floyd to Golden Boy has more than doubled after watching him ringside as he impressively debuted under our promotional banner this past month,” said Oscar De La Hoya. “With his humble charm, charisma, and dedication to become one of the top guys in the sport, we see a great deal of potential superstardom in the making.”

Schofield debuted professionally on October 9, 2020 with a skillful knockout of Richard Esquibel. His background outside of the ring is just as impressive – Schofield and his father were formerly unhoused and lived in a shelter for months which fostered his desire to help disadvantaged individuals through community works.

Dee Lee Promotions, LLC in association with Family Legacy Finest Presents LIVE INTERNATIONAL PROFESSIONAL BOXING

Wilmington, DE- Dee Lee Promotions, LLC in association with Family Legacy Finest and Matchmaker, Nick Tiberi will present a night of LIVE INTERNATIONAL PROFESSIONAL BOXING on Saturday, September 17, 2022 at The Chase Fieldhouse, 401 Garasches Lane, Wilmington, DE 19801. This sensational fight card features many of boxing’s young up and coming international talent on the hunt to make their mark in the world of professional boxing. Fighters from Portugal, Hungary and Canada have big dreams and each believes Wilmington will be a big step in accomplishing those dreams.

In this first ever Professional Boxing Promotion at The Chase Fieldhouse, two exciting bouts share the top honor as Co-Main events. Jessica ‘The Cobra’ Camara (8-3-0/0 ko’s) fighting out of Portugal by way of Canada, will make her second attempt to win a World Super Lightweight Title when she takes on a really tough Jaica Pavilus (3-6-1/0 ko’s) coming to Wilmington from Port-au-Prince, Haiti by way of New York. Camara came up short in her first title shot losing a hard fought 10 round split decision and this time around, she’s looking to walk out of the ring with the belt. Delaware’s knowledgeable boxing fans won’t be fooled by either fighter’s record, as it’s common knowledge in boxing circles, that these women fighters fight wherever and whomever is put in front of them…period.

Lightweights Pedro ‘The Black Panther’ Gomes (10-3-0/2 ko’s) of Porto, Portugal and Dante ‘The Red Cornet’ Cox (8-2-0/5 ko’s) out of Germany by way of Glen Burnie, MD share the other co-main honors. Gomes is coming a long way to showcase his talents but he’ll need to be on top of his game, since Cox is a southpaw with power, as witnessed by his impressive knockout record.

Undefeated Istvan ‘Hungarian Hammer’ Bernath (10-0-0/10 ko’s), the number one ranked Hungarian heavyweight, heads up this exciting undercard of young Turks. Boxing fans worldwide crave the kind of one punch destruction that distinguishes the heavyweight division from all others and Bernath is that kind of heavyweight. The Hungarian Hammer has that power and more, so be in your seats fight fans, because when the bell rings for this one, there’s going to be Thunder!

The young talented undercard will include Portugal’s Milton ‘The Prince’ Jeremias (4-0-0/2 ko’s) looking to remain undefeated, for the 3rd time in the USA, when he takes on Bedford, Ohio’s Shawn Rall (2-6-0/2 ko’s) in an exciting 4 round welterweight matchup. This will be Rall’s 4th fight this year, so it seems he’s in a hurry to climb back in the ring as often as possible. Also appearing on the undercard are, Jalique Holden (1-0) and Weusi Johnson (3-22) both of Wilmington, DE and Philadelphia’s own Adonis Wilkins looking forward to making his Pro Debut.

A pair of Chester, PA fighters round out this undercard. Both Middleweight, Frankie Lynn (1-0) and heavyweight, Tony Young (Pro Debut) have big plans, but for each of these young talents, those plans have to go through Wilmington, DE Saturday night, September 17th, 2022. This is the moment Wilmington and Delaware have wished for, so get your tickets early! Doors open at 6:00pm First bout slated for 7:00pm

SHIELDS: OUT OF ALL THE FIGHTERS I’VE TRAINED, FILIP’S RIGHT AT THE TOP WITH THEM

Ahead of his Final Eliminator bout for the IBF Heavyweight World Title, Filip Hrgovic (14-0, 12 KOs) must first come through his fellow undefeated fighter Zhilei Zhang (24-0-1, 19 KOs). The mastermind behind ‘El Animal’ getting his shot at heavyweight glory is the acclaimed Ronnie Shields.

Shields has worked with some of the biggest and baddest fighters in boxing, with legendary names such as Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield a part of a long list of successful champions. Even the current crop of fighters have gone to pick the brilliant mind of Shields, like the undisputed 154lb champion Jermell Charlo and his brother, the current WBC Middleweight Champion, Jermall Charlo to name but a few.

Now, the 64-year-old American has what he believes to be the future king of division. His vast experiences as a fighter and coach make his word as credible as fact. This is, after all, a man who has such experience as marginally missing out on the Olympic team in the 1970’s, having shared an encounter with the great Sugar Ray Leonard during trials.

“Out of all the fighters I’ve trained, Filip’s right at the top with them,” said Shields. “He is a really good fighter; he knows his way around the ring and when you show him something he picks it up really well. He knows what he must do, and he has shown every attribute it takes to be a top fighter.”

Shields has been alongside Hrgovic every step of the way during a long camp preparing for Zhang. This fight had been scheduled to happen sooner, but the Croatian suffered a personal loss which, understandably, moved the bout to a later date.

Now the fight is finally within touching distance as the clock counts down to fight night on Saturday, with confidence flowing amongst the camp of Hrgovic. For all the suffering, both emotionally and physically, this very moment is where Shields believes ‘El Animal’ is now in peak condition.

“It has been a tough time for him, he’s had to adapt to the fact his father is no longer here. It has taught him a lot, and it has obviously been very painful because he was so close to his father, said Shields. “Filip’s father is with him every single day, and his father wanted him to become heavyweight champion of the world. That is a goal Filip’s set, and he’s not only doing it for himself but his family as well.”

“He’s coming into this so well prepared, we all believe he’s in the best shape he has ever been in. It has been a really long camp, and he’s learnt plenty of things throughout that make him confident he’ll win on Saturday night.”

It is common practice for a fighter to have their eyes securely focused on the task at hand. Zhang will be the only name on the mind of Hrgovic, however, you cannot overlook the prospect of who he may face next out of the two main event contenders – Oleksandr Usyk or Anthony Joshua.

Regardless of previous experiences watching ‘AJ’ train, or the dominant record at Cruiserweight and Heavyweight for the current champion Usyk; Shields remains unintimidated by who may be their next opponent so long as Zhang is taken care of.

“Filip has the capabilities to beat anybody who stands in front of him. He’s consistently shown he’s a really good fighter and he fully knows how to handle himself inside of that ring,” he said. “The main event is a going to be a great fight. Truthfully, I think it’s up in the air who will come out the winner of this one, but either way it’ll be a great show.”

“It doesn’t which fighter from the main event he fights, I’m confident Filip is going to have the shot he’s been preparing for his whole life to become the heavyweight champion of the world.”

Here is what Lopez had to say about his matchup with Diaz, his recent training camp, fighting at home, and more.

On his recent training camp:

Camp has been tough but motivating, as I’m excited to be fighting in front of all my fans in my hometown of Corona, California.  When I’m tired from training, I get extra motivation to go the extra mile as my fans keep me going. I have been waiting for this moment, to fight at home, and that is what has inspired me for this camp. The sparring I had for this fight was the best I’ve had in years.”

On his matchup with Diaz:

“Diaz is undefeated, who got a big win last year against another unbeaten fighter.  He’s kept his unbeaten record in place and that’s what makes me excited, I want to be the first fighter to give him a loss. He’s coming with the mindset to upset me in front of all my hometown fans, but he’s going to find out real quick, that I’m on another level then anyone he’s ever fought. My relentlessness and desire will be the keys to me winning this fight.”

On what a win will do for his career:

“Quite simply put, a victory makes up for the loss early in my career. It shows I’ve evolved and became a better fighter. I know that I am an elite fighter and beating an undefeated prospect will only make my stock rise. I am coming into this fight to earn the respect that I feel was taken from me earlier in my career.”

On being showcased as the co-main event in his hometown:

“I love being able to fight at home in Southern California, especially Corona, California, where I was born and raised. I am very proud to represent where I’m from. Being featured so high on this card essentially gives me a great platform to entertain my fans and put on a show. I am looking forward to the energy of the crowd and the excitement that Corona, California will bring on fight night. This is going to be a fight you won’t want to miss as it will be action-packed, proving I’m ready to be in the conversation for some form of a title in the next year. I respect my opponent outside of the ring, but not in the ring. I want the boxing fans and those who love the sport to see me as a great fighter on this night.”

There’s amateur tournaments going on right now as we speak and throughout the week, motivated and inspired by some of the biggest names in the sport in Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua.”

Filip Hrgovic:

“Hi to everyone, thanks for having me here. It’s good to be part of this huge event. I’ve been waiting for this fight for almost two years. Like you said, we went through the whole list. A lot of fighters didn’t want to fight with me. I’m glad that we found the one that wants that. Thanks to Zhang and his team. I think that we will make a great fight. We are both big guys and we are both big punchers. I think he is a really dangerous guy but he lasts for a few rounds. I’m dangerous for the whole fight. I’m dangerous for 12 rounds. That is the difference. It’s a great moment for my career. I am co-main event and it’s an honour for me. Thanks for the opportunity and I’m sure you’re not going to regret it. We’ll make a great fight.”

Zhilei Zhang:

“First of all it’s an honour for me to be here in Saudi Arabia. I would like to say thank you to Mr Eddie Hearn, Matchroom and Saudi Arabia for making this happen. Being here is a privilege for me, of course this fight is important – it’s an IBF Eliminator. Winning this fight would mean I could directly step up to face the winner of Usyk vs. Joshua. It means a lot in China and for the sport of boxing in China. I will promote the sport of boxing in China for all of my people. For my last fight 16 million people in China tunes in to watch that. I believe we will make more history this time. I am expecting 100 million. I have 1.4 billion people behind me and supporting me. Let’s make it happen. I’m fighting for my country. On Saturday everybody is going to witness Chinese power again!”

Callum Smith:

“It’s must-win. I think every fight is must-win at this stage in your career. I’m in a busy division, a packed division where there’s a lot of fighters waiting for a shot at the World Title. A loss here puts me at the back of the queue – and it’s a very big queue to go to the back of. A win here puts me at the front of the queue, it puts me next in line to fight for the World Title. That’s the goal. I’ve been there before down at 168 and I believe I’m good enough to do it at 175. It’s a must-win and I’m excited, it’s a big show and a big platform to perform on. Hopefully I can get the business done and move onto a World Title. It’s been good to be here and good to get back here. Obviously I’ve got the best memories from being here, becoming a World Champion. There’s a good buzz around the place this time round. Obviously it’s a great main event but I’m here to do a job and that’s win. I left here last time as a World Champion. I believe I’ll leave here this time ready to fight for a new one.”

Mathieu Bauderlique:

“First of all I am sorry that I do not speak English, but I am honoured to be here to fight on such a prestigious card. I’ll be able to show all of my skills in front of a big stage. I am a warrior first and foremost. It’s in my DNA. I’m always here to win and I’m ready for a good fight.”

Ramla Ali:

“I was saying to the journalists earlier that world records will be broken on the track or when you’re doing 100 metres. You might have that record at the time but then two months later someone else will beat it. But for me and my opponent Crystal we will be the first women in history to fight here and nobody can take that away from us. We will cement our names and it will be there forever. I know that along the way we’re going to be inspiring so many young girls and so many women to not only take up the sport of boxing but take up sport in general. I’m actually hosting a sister’s club here tomorrow. 30 to 40 girls have signed up to do the class. Knowing that we’ve inspired at least 30 women is a huge achievement in my eyes. I’d love to have one final fight at the end of the year, hopefully for a title. We’re working towards that. I’ve had an incredible camp. I’m so incredibly blessed to work with Manny Robles. I feel like his and my team’s experience has helped me become so ready for this fight. I’m 100% ready to put on a great performance.”

Crystal Nova:

“Thank you very much for giving me this opportunity to be one of the first female fights in Saudi Arabia. I look forward to giving me best in the ring.”

Ben Whittaker:

“Firstly, I want to thank God for putting me in this position. I want to thank 258 for knocking the door, we got here. I’m just treating this situation as an experience for me. I believe that I’ll be fighting for those belts one day and I just want to see what the fighters go through. That’s the magnitude of this fight and it’s great to be here. Looking at AJ, the nights he’s brought to Britain, it’s great for him and it’s great for the country. The Brits should get behind him because too many people always downplay what he’s done. I’m rooting for him, 258 are rooting for him and the rest of Britain should.”

Badou Jack:

“I want to thank Skill Challenge and Prince Khaled for having me, and the whole Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. I appreciate all of the love. I’m excited to finally fight here in Saudi. I’ve fought in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, but now finally we’re here so I’m excited. I’m here to stay. I feel young, I take care of my body. You’ve got to live a boxer’s life. You can’t just live it when you’re in training camp, it’s a lifestyle – all year round.”

Andrew Tabiti:

“I want to thank Prince Khaled from Skill Challenge Entertainment. I’m real thankful for having this opportunity. My original opponent was Tyrone Spong but that fight didn’t go through. I don’t know if I’m going to campaign at Heavyweight. I’m going to fight certain fights at Heavyweight, smaller Heavyweights. I might campaign at Cruiserweight and Bridgerweight. I definitely see AJ beating Usyk, he just needs to be smart and use his size and all of the advantages that he has. He can beat him.”

Ziyad Al-Mayouf:

“It was a huge honour and pleasure to be here yesterday. If I was writing my own story with my own hands, it wouldn’t have been as good as God is writing for me right now. I just love the support from the people. I love that I am a symbol of hope and opportunity, and I’m representing more than just boxing this Saturday. That’s a beautiful place to be for a young athlete. The good thing about pressure is pressure makes diamonds! That’s what’s going to happen on Saturday. I’m here to inspire. I want to be a steppingstone to the athletes of Saudi Arabia and the Arab world that are going to come after me.”

Daniel Lapin:

“I have the main advantage which is my height. That’s why I will keep my opponent at distance. I will not give him the opportunity to come closer. I have done all of the preparation with Oleksandr Usyk’s team and I think that he is in the best form that he has ever had.”

FORMER HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION DEONTAY WILDER BATTLES HARD-HITTING ROBERT HELENIUS IN EXPLOSIVE SHOWDOWN ON FOX SPORTS PBC PAY-PER-VIEW SATURDAY, OCT. 15 AT BARCLAYS CENTER IN BROOKLYN

BROOKLYN – (Aug. 17, 2022) – Former WBC Heavyweight World Champion and boxing superstar Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder will take on top-rated Robert “The Nordic Nightmare” Helenius in an explosive 12-round WBC Heavyweight Title Eliminator between ferocious punchers in the main event of a FOX Sports PBC Pay-Per-View Saturday, Oct. 15 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn in a Premier Boxing Champions event.

In the co-feature, former IBF Super Middleweight Champion Caleb “Sweethands” Plant faces two-time WBC Super Middleweight Champion Anthony “The Dog” Dirrell in a highly anticipated 12-round WBC Super Middleweight Title Eliminator between 168-pound rivals. Two additional pay-per-view undercard bouts will be announced to round out the action-packed four-fight lineup presented by PBC.

Tickets for the event, which is promoted by BombZquad Promotions and TGB Promotions, go on sale Friday, Aug. 19 at 10 a.m. ET and can be purchased through seatgeek.com and barclayscenter.com. Tickets will also be available for purchase in-person at the American Express Box Office at Barclays Center beginning Friday at noon ET.

Pre-sale tickets are available TOMORROW, Thursday, Aug. 18 from 10 a.m. ET until 10 p.m. ET through seatgeek.com and barclayscenter.com with the code: BOXING

“Deontay Wilder has established himself as must-see, live or on TV, because of his incredible knockout prowess. To have him make his return to boxing against another power puncher in Robert Helenius at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, adds another element of excitement to an outstanding card,’’ said Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions. “Caleb Plant vs. Anthony Dirrell is an old-fashioned slugfest that is sure to deliver drama with two highly-skilled fighters squaring off. With two more sensational matchups to be added to the PPV, fans that tune into FOX Sports PBC PPV or attend live at Barclays Center will be treated to an incredible night of boxing.’’

One of the greatest knockout artists in boxing history, Wilder (42-2-1, 41 KOs) is on a mission to become a two-time world heavyweight champion following a first reign that included 10 title defenses, a feat accomplished by only seven heavyweights in boxing history. The “Bronze Bomber” now returns to Barclays Center, a venue where he has fought four times and thrilled the crowd with some of his most spectacular knockouts. The 36-year-old slugger from Tuscaloosa, Alabama earned his moniker by winning bronze at the 2008 Olympics. He rejuvenated the heavyweight division when he captured the WBC belt in January 2015, becoming one of boxing’s biggest stars with an all-time heavyweight best 91.1% knockout percentage and a captivating personality to match. Coming off an epic trilogy with Tyson Fury, Wilder remains must-see television and one of the greatest fighters of this era.

“It’s been a long journey for me and as of today it continues. I thought so many times about whether I should stay out of the business or come back,’’ said Wilder. “Once I got my statue in my hometown and saw so many people arrive and celebrate with me and my family, to see all the emotions, grown men crying in front of their children and saying he is a real true king, made me feel like my job is not done. So, here I am once again, looking forward to returning to the ring. I am looking forward to coming to Barclays Center, a place where I have had my most devastating knockouts and a place I consider my second home. So where all my Bombzquad people at? It’s time to put on your war gear. And let’s go to work, baby. Bombzquad is back!

Helenius (30-3, 19 KOs) stamped himself as one of the world’s best heavyweights with consecutive stoppage wins over the previously unbeaten Adam Kownacki, including an October 2021 sixth-round TKO win over Kownacki in Helenius’ last outing. Born in Sweden and fighting out of Mariehamn, Finland, Helenius established himself as one of Europe’s top heavyweights prior to making his U.S. debut in 2019. The 38-year-old “Nordic Nightmare” has won six of his last seven bouts.

“It’s great to be back at Barclays Center in an even bigger fight than my last one. I’ve been waiting for this opportunity for a long time and I’m going to be ready,’’ said Helenius. “I’m going to produce an even bigger upset than I did with Kownacki. I’m going for the belt, so this is a fight to prepare me to achieve that goal. I can only become the best heavyweight in the world by beating the best and that’s what I intend to do on October 15.’’

The 30-year-old Plant (21-1, 12 KOs) used his sublime boxing skills to rise through the ranks of the super middleweight division. In his first world championship fight, the Ashland City, Tennessee-native Plant, who now lives and trains in Las Vegas, took the fight to veteran Jose Uzcategui and won the title in a hard-fought unanimous decision in 2019. Plant dropped the first match of his career in his last fight, losing to Canelo Alvarez in an undisputed super middleweight championship fight on November 6. He will look to rebound and get back on the world title track in a grudge match against his rival, Dirrell.

“I’m looking forward to fighting at Barclays Center for the first time,” said Plant. “I know the fight fans in Brooklyn are going to come out for this card. I’m feeling good and I’ve been in the gym working hard since my last fight. I’m going to put on an excellent performance and retire this guy.”

Dirrell (34-2, 25 KOs) is a two-time super middleweight world champion who won one of the toughest battles of his life when he beat non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2008. The 37-year-old from Flint, Michigan won his first world title with a unanimous decision victory over Sakio Bika in 2014. He lost the title the next year via majority decision to Badou Jack. He would have to wait four years for another opportunity but successfully regained it with a technical split-decision over Avni Yildirim. He lost the title again, this time on a ninth-round TKO to David Benavidez in 2019. Dirrell is coming off of a fourth-round KO victory over Marcos Hernandez in his most recent match on November 6.

“I’m real excited to be back in the ring on October 15,” said Dirrell. “I’m especially excited to be fighting at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. This is a special place for me. I fought Sakio Bika for a world title at this same venue, so I’m happy to be back. This fight means even more to me because it’s one day after my birthday, which is October 14. So I’m looking forward to giving the fans a great show, getting the big victory on FOX Sports PBC Pay-Per-View and then celebrating it all after.”

JOYCE-PARKER UNDERCARD UPDATE: CACACE, ESSUMAN, HEANEY, CHAPMAN & HEFFRON

ANTHONY CACACE, EKOW Essuman, Nathan Heaney, Raven Chapman and Mark Heffron all feature in the supporting cast of the September 24 Joyce-Parker ‘Nowhere to Run’ blockbuster at the AO Arena, Manchester being shown exclusively live on BT Sport Box Office. Joyce vs Parker is promoted by Frank Warren for Queensberry Promotions in association with BOXXER.

The main event heavyweights Joe Joyce and Joseph Parker will, of course, be fighting for the right to take on the winner of the rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua, along with the WBO International, Intercontinental and WBC Silver heavyweight championships. Plus, Amanda Serrano will be bidding to win four world title belts at featherweight when the Puerto Rican superstar battles the unbeaten Dane Sarah Mahfoud.

Cacace (19-1, 7 KOs), 33, will challenge for the IBO world super featherweight title against the unbeaten Italian champion Michael Magnesi (21-0, 13). The 27-year-old from Lazio won the title by defeating Dennis Contreras in April and the British champion from Belfast is his first defence.

Nottingham’s British, IBF European and Commonwealth welterweight champion Essuman (17-0, 7) will be making a third defence of his belts against former English champion Samuel Antwi (14-1, 6) from Stockwell in London.

Essuman, 33, last defended in April at Wembley Stadium with a points verdict over Darren Tetley, having won his British and Commonwealth titles by defeating Chris Jenkins via stoppage in July of last year. Antwi won the vacant English title against Tetley in February 2021 and made a successful defence in February of this year with a unanimous decision win over Conah Walker.

Stoke middleweight Heaney (15-0, 6) will make a second defence of his IBO International title against Bolton’s Jack Flatley (19-2, 4), a recent European title challenger at super welterweight.

Heaney, 33, who is striving towards a major title challenge at the home of his beloved Stoke City, won his IBO belt with a seventh-round stoppage of the experienced Sladan Janjanin in November 2021 and returned to action in April in Telford and survived a first-round scare to ultimately overcome the dangerous Diego Ramirez by a significant margin over 10 rounds.

Former English champion Flatley, known as ‘Quiet Storm’, will come into the fight off two straight victories following his EBU title defeat to Kerman Lejarraga in December of last year. Flatley has a draw on his record against the current British super welterweight champion Troy Williamson.

The Queen of Queensberry, Raven Chapman (3-0, 2), moves quickly into title business with a challenge for the vacant WBC International featherweight championship against Argentina’s Jorgelina Guanini (10-4-2, 1).

The 28-year-old Chapman, known as ‘The Omen’, made her Queensberry debut in May in explosive fashion when she stopped Gabriella Mezei in less than a minute.

She will be stepping up in levels against Guanini, a former IBF world champion at super flyweight, who recently defeated the then unbeaten Brit Stevi Levy in Barcelona. The 30-year-old has previously lost on points to British opposition in Rachel Ball and Ellie Scotney.

The new British super middleweight champion Mark Heffron (28-2-1, 22) from Oldham will also feature on the card in an eight-round contest.

Liverpudlian James Heneghan (7-0) is back out in a six-rounder, while the card is finished off with up-and-coming Queensberry fighters Amaar Akbar (3-0) and Tommy Fletcher (1-0) both in four-round action.

“It is certainly going to be an all-action on BT Sport Box Office in the lead-up to the big heavyweight showdown at the top of the bill in Manchester,” said promoter Frank Warren. “I am thrilled to deliver a major fight for Anthony Cacace after his obvious disappointment over missing out at Wembley Stadium in April and winning this title against an unbeaten champion will put him in such a strong position in the super featherweight division.

“Ekow Essuman will be able to call the British title belt his own if he overcomes a strong challenger from Samuel Antwi in what is his mandatory defence of the belt. The impressive Ekow will quickly be able to move on to European and world honours if he can do the business at the AO Arena.

“It will be exciting to see Nathan Heaney in a good domestic scrap against the tough and very capable Jack Flatley. Nathan has developed and improved enormously in three tricky assignments against overseas opposition, and I am sure his army of fans will be looking forward to this one.

“Our current First Lady, Raven Chapman, really looked the part on her Queensberry debut in May when her opponent was blitzed in just 58 seconds. It showed us that Raven is ready for a step up and former world champion Jorgelina Guanini will provide a stern test of her credentials, with a WBC title on the line.

“Mark Heffron, fresh from his brutal stoppage of Lennox Clarke in July, is fully deserving of a fight closer to home and it will be good to see him really building some momentum as he heads into significant title action later this year.

“Add these four title fights to the four belts being on the line between Amanda Serrano and Sarah Mahfoud, plus the high-stakes heavyweight collision between Joe Joyce and Joseph Parker at the top of the bill and we should be in for a thrilling night of top-class action on September 24 that is not to be missed.”

Tickets for ‘Nowhere to Run’ – the heavyweight clash between Joe Joyce and Joe Parker on 24 September at the AO Arena, Manchester being shown exclusively live on BT Sport Box Office – are priced from £40 and are on sale now exclusively from Ticketmaster.co.uk.

CONDITIONING IS KING AS ‘EL ANIMAL’ PREDICTS IBF WORLD TITLE ELIMINATOR WIN

The avoided Croatian Heavyweight star Filip Hrgovic (14-0, 12 KOs) spoke at the press conference in Saudi Arabia as he comes up against China’s undefeated Zhilei Zhang (24-0-1, 19 KOs) in a Final Eliminator for the IBF Heavyweight World Title.

The fight has been a long time coming, having fallen through for multiple reasons, but everyone is excited as both fighters look ahead to Saturday. No one is more excited than ‘El Animal’, who knows he can take this opportunity to steal the headlines and announce his arrival as heir to the heavyweight throne.

“It’s great to be a part of this huge event, I’ve been waiting for this fight for almost two years,” said Hrgovic. “Like you said, we’ve been through a whole list where a lot of fighters didn’t want to fight with me, and I’m glad we’ve found someone who wants it. Thanks to Zhang and his team.”

Zhang acts as a true gatekeeper for title contention, and someone a future champion must overcome to get their opportunity to sit at the throne of the heavyweight division. A difficult southpaw, with power in his hands, and someone who shares the confidence of his Croatian opponent having never tasted defeat in his professional career.

It is the confidence in his conditioning that Hrgovic believes will separate these two fighters. A mutual respect has been apparent throughout from both camps, but he believes Zhang will struggle to maintain the pace that will be put on him.

“We are both big guys, we are both big punchers,” said Hrgovic. “The thing is that he’s dangerous over a few rounds, whereas I am dangerous over the whole fight. I’m dangerous for 12 rounds, that is the difference.”

He continued, “I am going to be the co-main event alongside all these ex-champions and contenders, it is a really big honour for me. I’m thankful for the opportunity, and you’re not going to regret it. We will produce an incredible fight.”

USYK VS. JOSHUA 2 PUBLIC WORKOUT QUOTES

Fight Week preparations for the Rage on the Red Sea stepped up a gear last night, with no fewer than 11 fighters from the historic card taking part in a Public Workout at Jeddah’s Saudia Airlines Club.

Main event fighters Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua, who have their second meeting at the King Abdullah Sports City Arena on Saturday, were among the boxers that gave attending fans and media a first glimpse at how they’re shaping up going into their Heavyweight showdown.

Oleksandr Usyk quotes:

The last few months have been very difficult for you all, how pleased are you that fight night is nearly here?

“I’m very pleased that I am going to fight very soon, and I feel happy about that.”

Has it been difficult to focus on boxing at any time the last few months?

“Yes, but I did it.”

Any chance that you can tell us what you’re going to weigh?

“You’ll see it on the scales.”

How much did you learn from that first fight with Joshua?

“I’ve been watching him for ten years already.”

Everybody in Ukraine is going to be able to watch this fight for free, which is fantastic. How pleased are you about that?

“I’m very pleased about that. Thanks, God, for everything. We all worked hard on it.”

Anthony Joshua quotes:

You’ve been out here for over a month with the new team, how’s it been?

“Saudi has been good to me. Shout out to everyone in Saudi. I’ve had a good time. Everyone at my hotel has been looking after me, everyone in the gym. It’s been like a second home.”

And good memories from last time?

“Yeah, and I’m about to create new ones.”

Will that experience help you?

“You know what I learnt? Previous experiences are helpful, but it’s all about what happens on the night, right. I don’t know how much it will help me but I’m focused and I’m just ready to get the job done.”

How much did you learn at Spurs last September?

“I feel like one of my main strengths is that I’m a quick learner, I’m a sponge. But ultimately, apart from all of the learning stuff, it’s a fight. It’s a fight. That’s it. Whoever throws the most punches and lands the most punches wins. That’s all that matters.”

Is it a case of showing something new or is it a case of getting in there and showing everybody who you’ve always been?

“Do my best. Just doing my best. That’s all I can do.”

I’ve got to ask you for a prediction, it’s the law!

“What’s everyone saying? (asks crowd). Inshallah! We’re going for a knockout.”

Also strutting their stuff at Jeddah’s Saudia Airlines Club was Zhilei Zhang ahead of his bout with Filip Hrgovic, rivals Callum Smith and Mathieu Bauderlique, as well as Badou Jack, Andrew Tabiti, Rashed Belhasa, and Bader Samreen. Rounding out the pugilists were Ziyad Almaayouf and Ben Whittaker.

HE’S BAAAAACK! VASILIY LOMACHENKO TOUCHES DOWN IN U.S.

LOS ANGELES (Aug. 16, 2022) — Lightweights, beware. Loma is back!

Vasiliy Lomachenko, the three-weight world champion and former pound-for-pound king, arrived at Los Angeles International Airport earlier this afternoon. Lomachenko (16-2, 11 KOs), who spent several months serving with the Belgorod-Dnestrovsky Territorial Defense Battalion in his native Ukraine, is ready to resume his boxing career and will return to the ring later this year against a to-be-determined opponent.

A former featherweight, junior lightweight and unified lightweight champion, Lomachenko regained his career momentum in 2021 with dominant victories over Masayoshi Nakatani and Richard Commey. He will begin training camp at his Southern California residence with an eye on his ultimate goal of ruling the lightweight division. In the eight months since his points win over Commey, 23-year-old prodigy Devin “The Dream” Haney toppled George Kambosos Jr. to become the undisputed king.

“I pray every day for Ukraine, for the people…. and stop the war. When I came back to Ukraine, I believe it was the second day of war. Your mind changes because you see a different life. It’s a different life. Nobody knows what happened on this day. It’s very bad. It’s very bad for the world,” Lomachenko said. “I’ve prepared for this moment, and I need this chance. I need this fight… undisputed. Undisputed world champion.”
