International Boxing Association (IBA) Fully committed to women’s boxing

VENTNOR CITY, N.J. (December 5, 2018) – The relaunched International Boxing Association (IBA) is making a full commitment to women’s boxing, commencing with a new rule change to sanction 12-round world title fights.

The IBA is going back to the future having been an original pioneer in terms of giving much deserved recognition to women’s boxing, represented by former IBA world champions such as Laila Ali, Mia St. John and Holly Holm.

In 1991, two-time Major League Baseball all-star pitcher and Cy Young Award winner Dean Chance founded the IBA, guiding the international sanctioning body until his death in 2015. Under a new group headed by IBA president J.C. Courreges, the IBA relaunched during the summer of 2017.

“This is the IBA’s first step towards establishing equality between men and women in professional boxing,” Courreges announced. “Our goal is to offer equality for women boxers in our organization. Women’s world title fights are 10, 2-minute rounds, not 12, like in the IBA.

“There is a new wave of women’s boxing, led by Claressa Shields, Katie Taylor, Amanda Serrano and so many other rising female stars worldwide. The IBA plans to be in the forefront and we recently crowned our first woman world champion, strawweight Eva Guzman, of Venezuela. In 2019, we look forward to crowning many other women IBA world champions, in what the IBA is calling the Year of Women’s Boxing.”

Former IBA world champions during the past quarter-centory include Hall-of-Famers Oscar de la Hoya, George Foreman, Roberto Duran and Arturo Gatti, as well as stars such as Roy Jones, Jr., Bernard Hopkins, Shane Mosely, James Toney, Mikkel Kessler, Eric Morales, Diego Corrales, Jose Luis Castillo, Glen Johnson and Antonio Tarver.

FLODIN AND KHATTAB SET FOR SCANDINAVIAN SHOWDOWN ON THORSLUND-GRAF UNDERCARD

Oliver Flodin (4-0) and Abdul Khattab (15-2-1, 4 KOs) are set for a Scandinavian showdown on the undercard of Dina Thorslund’s WBO Female World Super Bantamweight title defence against Alesia Graf on January 19 at the Struer Energi Park in Denmark.

Khattab, from Copenhagen, returns to the ring for the first time following his draw with Ronny Mittag on October 27, 2017 at the Sport and Congress Centre in Schwerin, and the 25 year-old is eager to prove he still has more to give in the professional ranks, starting with a victory over his Swedish rival Flodin.

“I’ve been keeping myself in top shape and waiting for the right opportunity,” says Khattab, who is trained by Danish boxing legend Mikkel Kessler. “That opportunity is here now, and I’m looking forward to a great fight on January 19.

“Of course, there is always something extra when a Danish fighter meets a Swede. It gives me even more motivation, and I’m sure it will make for a great atmosphere. I have no doubt that my hand will be raised after the final bell.

“I’ve seen some of Flodin’s fights. He is a good young boxer, who is just starting to make his way as a professional. He was good amateur, but professional boxing is something completely different, and I am going to show him that.

“Fans can expect a good performance from me. I’m hungry, and I feel stronger than ever. I believe one hundred percent that I will beat Flodin, and then I’ll be ready for a title fight in 2019. The time for fun is over, I’m serious now!”

Flodin, the 22 year-old from Jonkoping, has impressed since joining the professional ranks, recording four unanimous points wins, his latest against Nikoloz Gvajava on June 2 at the Swiss Life Hall in Hannover.

The Swede can expect a significant step up at the Struer Energi Park, but says he believes this is Khattab’s ‘last chance’, and that his superior ring smarts will prove the difference in their eight-round middleweight clash.

“It’s going to be a war,” says Flodin. “This is Khattab’s last chance as a professional, but for me it’s just a great opportunity to climb the ladder.

“I have met and beat many Danes as an amateur, and it will be no different on January 19. I expect to be smarter than Khattab in the ring. I’ve watched him fight, I know he comes forward a lot, and that will suit my style perfectly.

“I have great ambitions for my boxing career, and once I’m finished with Khattab, my plan is to target a European title fight in the next two years.”

Promoter Nisse Sauerland says he is looking forward to this fascinating showdown between these two promising Scandinavian fighters.

“We are pleased to present this spectacular Scandinavian showdown on January 19 in Struer, with much at stake for both boxers,” he says.

“For Oliver it’s a big step up, and for Abdul it’s a must win. It’s a dangerous fight for both, and fans can expect a great battle between Sweden and Denmark.”

Flodin versus Khattab is the latest addition to a stacked card in Struer. Local hero Dina Thorslund defends her WBO Female World Super Bantamweight title against Germany’s Alesia Graf, while former European Champion Dennis Ceylan rematches Jesus Sanchez for the EU Featherweight crown.

Tickets are available via www.ticketmaster.dk or by calling (+45) 70 15 65 65.

ICB SIGNS VANES MARTIROSYAN; CONTENDER TO MAKE CAGE BOXING DEBUT IN 2019

Former super welterweight world contender Vanes Martirosyan of Glendale, Calif., is the first standout to join International Championship Boxing, promoter of the revolutionary and exciting new combat sport that features boxing in a cage.

“Vanes is not just the first to sign a multi-bout, multi-year agreement with ICB, but he’s also the first of several,” says Jack Fulton, founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Virginia-based ICB.

“We are in discussions with many boxers, mixed martial artists and kickboxers, and some of the names definitely would surprise,” says Fulton.
“It’s more than interest, it’s enthusiasm to box in ‘The Fight Zone’ says Fulton. “We’ve struck a chord with boxers and MMA fighters, and it’s resonating.”
The 32-year-old Martirosyan, originally from Armenia, has a record of 36-4-1 with 21 knockouts.

Martirosyan’s most recent bout was against Gennady Golovkin on May 5 for “GGG’s” World Boxing Association and the World Boxing Council middleweight championships, a fight he took on three-week notice.

Martirosyan had two previous title bouts, one for the WBA super welterweight crown and another for the World Boxing Organization super welterweight championship.

Martirosyan’s first bout in the ICB cage will be during the first quarter of 2019.
“I was surprised when I heard about boxing in a cage, but at the same time I was real happy,” says Martirosyan. “The idea is just amazing. Fans are going to love it.

“I’m going to be a nightmare in the cage,” says Martirosyan. “It’s easier to cut off the cage in a dog fight, and I’m an action fighter; I do bring the action.

“I challenge all fighters in the world, boxing or MMA, to come into the cage with me, and I’ll show them what real fighting is all about,” says Martirosyan.
“Vanes and his team are excited to be part of this new and unique concept for boxing,” says his manager, Vince Carthron.

“It’s a format just made for Vanes, and we are delighted to be there at the beginning and helping to build it,” says Carthron. “It’s good for boxing fans, and it’s good for Vanes.”

It took Fulton almost two years to get the cage designed, built, patented and approved by boxing and athletic commissions within the United States, including the state of Nevada.

An 18 year veteran promoter of the sport, through the years Fulton began to realize the sport needed something new, something fresh. And in 2016 he did something about it.

“The sport of boxing needed something revolutionary, and this is it,” says Fulton.

“The ICB cage better assures toe-to-toe, non-stop action, something that’s appealing to both boxing and mixed martial arts fans, and to the new hybrid athlete that’s proficient in more than one combat sport”

“We have no doubt ICB boxing in the cage will engage all ring sports fans,” says Fulton. “‘This is boxing for a new generation, a generation that has grown up watching combat sport in a cage. And that’s the main reason we conceived, created and now launched the ICB. It will re-energize boxing fans and bring MMA fans who prefer stand-up striking.”

“Vanes gets it; he sees the future and the opportunity,” says Fulton. “The ICB cage doesn’t force a boxer or an MMA fighter to make a choice; it offers them flexibility.”

PAN AM GAMES GOLD MEDALIST ARTHUR BIYARSLANOV MAKES PRO DEBUT DEC. 15 IN TORONTO

TORONTO, ON- One of the most highly anticipated professional debuts in Canadian boxing history will finally occur on December 15.

The best Canadian amateur boxer of his generation, Arthur “The Chechen Wolf” Biyarslanov, will finally step into a professional ring for the first time as part of a stacked “Risky Business” card presented by Lee Baxter Promotions at the Coca-Cola Coliseum.

As an amateur, Biyarslavnov racked up an 85-13 overall record, and collected four national championships. His greatest amateur achievement was his victory over the great Cuban Yasniel Toledo at the 2015 Pan Am Games, which netted him the gold medal and worldwide acclaim. A year later, he became the only male Canadian boxer to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

Now training in Montreal, Biyarslanov will return to Toronto, the site of his Pan Am Games triumph, to begin his career in the paid ranks.

“Every promoter in Canada, and probably in the world, has tried to or at least thought about signing Arthur over the past three years, so it’s not lost on us how lucky we are to host his professional debut in front of all of his fans here in Canada,” said Baxter.

It’s been a remarkable journey for Biyarslanov. Born near the Chechen region of Russia, Biyarslanov and his family left the war-torn region for Azerbaijan, and later Canada, arriving in the Great White North in 2005. Ultimately, after excelling in a variety of sports, it was boxing that truly helped him find his footing and find himself.

As a professional, Biyarslanov has sought the guidance of one of the most respected boxing gurus in the world, Marc Ramsay. Ramsay, based in Montreal, has helped guide the careers of nearly all of the top Canadian pros of this generation, and some of the greatest of all-time, including former light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal, former middleweight titleholder David Lemieux, current light heavyweight champion Eleider Alvarez and more. He is also the trainer of another Chechen champion, Artur Beterbiev, the current IBF light heavyweight champion.

The 23-year old southpaw will battle eight-fight Mexican veteran Ernesto Cardona Sanchez in his first pro bout.

ABOUT THIS EVENT:

Lee Baxter Promotions, in association with Athlete Development and Management (A.D.A.M.) will present “Risky Business,” live championship professional boxing at the newly renamed Coca-Cola Colisseum in downtown Toronto, Ontario.

The Coca Cola Coliseum is the home of the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, and a spot for some of the city’s biggest concerts and attractions, including WWE wrestling.

In the main event, Samuel Vargas will return home to face the undefeated Adrian Gabriel Pereiro, as he begins a new campaign at light welterweight. Vargas is fresh off a thrilling bout with former world champion Amir Khan. Despite coming up short on the scorecards, Vargas not only gained fans, but proved to have plenty of them already. The Colombian-Canadian banger dropped Khan early in the bout, and had him hurt later on in the contest as well. In the end, the fight was the most-watched in the history of U.K. subscription television.

Vargas is now honing his craft in training camp in Spain alongside former welterweight champion Kell Brook, as he is determined to return to Canada an improved fighter.

In the co-feature of the night, an old fashioned local rivalry comes to a boil, as Patrice Volny battles Ryan Young.

Volny scored the biggest win of his career in September, as he dominated veteran Albert Onolunose to capture both the WBA-NABA and WBO-NABO middleweight crowns. The victory situates him in a prime spot within the world rankings in two major sanctioning bodies, remarkably, just twelve fights into his professional career.

Another one of Canada’s top middleweights, Steve Rolls, will be in tough against KeAndrae Leatherwood. Both men have enjoyed significant national television exposure, having graduated from the esteemed ShoBox series on Showtime.

The card will also feature local favorite Nick Fantauzzi against Marco Parente in a light heavyweight contest, Bollywood star Neeraj Goyat, heavyweight sensation Kristian Prenga, the professional debut of Iranian amateur standout Salar Gholami, and the remarkable return Moncef “Buddy” Askri after an 11-year hiatus from the sport of boxing.

Tickets for “Risky Business” are available through Ticketmaster. VIP tables can be purchased by emailing sales@leebaxterpromotions.com. Doors open at 6:00 PM ET, with the first bout starting at 7:00 PM ET.

Taylor defends World titles against Wahlstrom in New York

Katie Taylor will defend her IBF and WBA World Lightweight titles against Eva Wahlstrom at Madison Square Garden, New York on December 15, on the undercard of Canelo Alvarez challenging Rocky Fielding for the WBA World Super Middleweight title, live on DAZN.

Taylor (11 – 0 5KOs) makes her third defense of her belts in her third fight in New York, first in the World famous Manhattan boxing mecca and the fourth stateside fight in her last seven fights.

The Irish sensation became the WBA World ruler in her seventh pro outing in Cardiff, Wales in October 2017 against Anahi Sanchez and unified the belts at the Barclays Center in fight number nine in the paid ranks, comfortably ripping the IBF belt from Victoria Bustos in April.

Taylor, an amateur star in the Emerald Isle with an Olympic gold medal added to five World championships and six European golds, is hunting unification bouts at 135lbs in 2019, but in unbeaten Finn Wahlstrom, the 32 year old faces the stiffest test of her pro career.

Wahlstrom (22 – 0 – 1 3KOs) is aiming to become a two-weight World champion in the Big Apple the long-reigning WBC Super-Featherweight champion steps up to Lightweight to achieve that goal on December 15.

The 38 year old landed her 130lbs strap in April 2015 and has been unmoved in four defenses on home turf, including a win over her common foe with Taylor, in former World champion Sanchez, who the Helsinki ace beat in December 2016.

The pair have history having clashed at the very start of Taylor’s amateur career 14 years ago, and the defending champion cannot think of a better setting to meet in the pros and continue her path to unification just over two years since the start of her pro career.

“Eva is someone I know very well from our time in the amateurs,” said Taylor. “I was actually drawn against her in my very first international competition back in 2004 and it seemed like every time I turned up to a major competition after that she was in the draw!

“She was always a really tough opponent so it’s no surprise that she’s gone on to have a great professional career. I think this fight will really showcase the best that women’s boxing has to offer and I’m really looking forward to it.

“I’ve been lucky enough to fight in some iconic venues since turning pro two years ago but I’m not sure there’s any more iconic in a boxing sense than Madison Square Garden. I think every fighter dreams about stepping in the ring there and I’m no different. To get the opportunity to defend my World titles there is really very exciting.”

“I have stated for a longest time that I am ready and I want to engage in toughest fights available,” said Wahlstrom. “This is the ultimate, biggest and toughest fight anywhere and to have it in the legendary Madison Square Garden is a huge honor.

“I lost to Katie few times in amateur days but I am sure I won her respect anyway. Now in a 10-round pro fight, it will be totally different game with all new avenues to avenge those defeats.

“I have the greatest respect to Katie for how she has remained her respectable, nice, down-to-earth personality despite all the success and fame. Thus, I am not going to do any trash-talking, but I am very ready to do some thrashing in the MSG ring.”

“This is an amazing opportunity for Katie to fight at MSG,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “This is by far the toughest fight of her career so far and hugely important moving into 2019.

“There will be great Irish support in New York and she adds even more superstar status to this brilliant night of boxing on DAZN.”

WILLIE MONROE JR. TRAINING CAMP QUOTES

ROCHESTER, NY. (December 4, 2018) – Middleweight contender and former title challenger Willie Monroe Jr. discussed his upcoming contest against WBC Interim Middleweight Champion Jermall Charlo as he prepares to enter the ring in Premier Boxing Champions action Saturday, December 22 live on FOX and FOX Deportes from Barclays Center, the home of BROOKLYN BOXING™.

With fight night approaching, Monroe is hard at work in his hometown of Rochester, New York. Along with his coach Timothy Nolan, Monroe believes he is on track to deliver a great performance against an unbeaten opponent.

“Everything in camp right now is on point and moving forward,” said Monroe. “We’re getting the work we need each day. We know how to run a camp smoothly. If I can’t tell anything is wrong, then it’s going great.”

A veteran of two middleweight world title contests against Gennady Golovkin and Billy Joe Saunders, Monroe has had his eye on a Charlo matchup to once again prove himself against an elite middleweight.

“I’ve always watched Jermall’s fights because I have an eye on anyone around my weight class,” said Monroe. “Over the last year or so I’ve started to think I’m really going to get this fight and I’m excited about it coming to fruition on December 22.

“He’s considered one of the top middleweights and it makes this a great match. This time I’m going to have a full training camp like I didn’t get to have for Golovkin and Saunders and it’s going to help me.”

While he doesn’t possess the prodigious knockout power of his opponent, Monroe is more than confident that his other ring attributes will make up for that difference.

“We’re both at the top of the division and you don’t get this far without having a lot of physical ability,” said Monroe. “This fight isn’t about who’s the fastest and strongest though, it’s about how we’re going to execute. I’m not focused on who hits harder but who hits smarter. That’s always going to determine who wins a boxing match.

“Boxing is about intelligence first and everything follows after that. Will I be able to execute and make Jermall uncomfortable? We’ll see what happens on fight night. I’m going to be ready though. I’m in my stable now and I’m ready to come flying out of the gate on December 22.”

Charlo was serving as color commentator for Monroe’s August fight on FS1 and since then the two have gone face-to-face at two separate press events leading up to fight night. With fight week looming, Monroe believes the frequent face time will make an even more exciting fight.

“I’m definitely more eager to fight from seeing Jermall over and over again,” said Monroe. “The little things that you pick up in person tend to make you want to fight even more. You see the opponent and you build it up more in your head and use it for motivation. I think it’s going to make it even more entertaining when we finally get in there.”

Tickets for the show, which is being promoted by Lions Only Promotions and TGB Promotions in association with DiBella Entertainment, begin at $50 and are on sale now. Tickets can be purchased at ticketmaster.com, barclayscenter.com, or by calling 800-745-3000. Tickets can also be purchased at the American Express Box Office at Barclays Center. Group discounts are available by calling 844-BKLYN-GP.

Televised coverage begins at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT and features Jermell Charlo defending his WBC super welterweight world title against Tony Harrison, in addition to the Charlo vs. Monroe showdown. Televised action also features a heavyweight showdown between Dominic Breazeale and Carlos Negron.

TOMMY FURY: “I COULDN’T BE PROUDER – SO MUCH OF MY MOTIVATION COMES FROM TYSON!”

Tommy Fury explains how his brother and his ‘favourite fighter’ Tyson Fury has given him the motivation he needs as the light-heavyweight counts down the days to his eagerly anticipated professional debut on December 22nd on the undercard of Josh Warrington’s IBF World Featherweight Title defence against Carl Frampton.

“Words can’t describe how much of a motivation he is to me.” said a very proud Tommy Fury after watching his older brother Tyson fight to a controversial split decision draw with Deontay Wilder.

He continued: “I thought the result was ludicrous. I still can’t get to grips with it and how any judge and any single person watching that fight couldn’t give it to Tyson.

“Even with the two knockdowns, he was still miles ahead and a lot of big names in the sport have come out and said they had Tyson winning.”

Tommy was unable to join Tyson and Team Fury in Los Angeles as he continues his preparations for his upcoming fight at the Manchester Arena on December 22nd.

But despite being thousands of miles away across the Atlantic, Tyson has still been able to inspire his younger sibling as he edges ever-closer to embarking on his professional journey.

“Just watching him throughout the whole build up, all his training, the all access programmes on Showtime and BT Sport, words can’t describe how much of a motivation he is to me.

“He’s my favourite fighter and in my opinion the best heavyweight there has ever been and he’s my brother, so much of my motivation comes from him.

“If he can conquer all what he has done, then I can conquer anything and it’s the same to everybody out there, whatever you want to achieve in life you can achieve it. My motivation is sky high and I couldn’t any prouder than my brother.”

Tommy Fury will make his professional debut on the huge December 22nd Manchester Arena show headlined by IBF world featherweight champion Josh Warrington taking on former two-weight world champion Carl Frampton

Tickets are priced at £50 Upper Tier, £80 Tier, £100 Tier, £150 Tier, £200 Floor/Tier, £300 Floor, £400 Floor, £600 Inner Ring VIP Hospitality and are available.

Tickets available via Manchester Arena

ROCKY FIELDING INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT

LOS ANGELES (Dec. 3, 2018): ERIC GOMEZ: I want to say hello to everyone and thank you for dialing in. This is the official international conference call for the Super Middleweight World Champion Rocky Fielding, who will be taking on the Middleweight World Champion Canelo Alvarez on Dec. 15 from New York City at Madison Square Garden, and to be streamed on DAZN.

We’re less than 15 days away for this major event with our new partners DAZN. Fielding, obviously, world champion in his own right, has the opportunity of a lifetime, and to be able to take his career to the next level. This fight’s very, very dangerous for Canelo. The stakes are high, but the fight fans are going to get the fight they want in a great, great action-packed fight.

Again, this is going to be free. I want to repeat that. We talked about it a little bit last week. You can watch it free on DAZN. The first month is free for anybody that’s going to be a member or join DAZN. For those of you that want to see it live, you can go to the Madison Square Garden box office, or you can call Ticketmaster at 866-858-0008, and obviously online at ticketmaster.com, Golden Boytickets.com, and MSG.com.

Now, before I introduce Rocky and let him speak, I want to introduce a very important person on his team. This man was a fighter in his own right, but now he is recognized as one of the best trainers in the world. Please welcome trainer for Rocky Fielding, Jamie Moore. Jamie, can you say a few comments, please?

JAMIE MOORE: Obviously, we’ve only got a couple of weeks before the fight, so Rocky’s training has been ideal, been perfect, couldn’t have gone any smoother. I know I’ve said that many, many times before, but I truly believe he’s put the work in in the camp that can get him the victory.

ERIC GOMEZ: Great. Thank you, Jamie. Thank you very much. And now I’d like to introduce a fighter who has, like I said a little earlier, the opportunity of a lifetime on December 15th. Besides making his first defense of his title, he’ll be making his United States debut, and he’ll be fighting at the famed Madison Square Garden of New York City. Please welcome to the call WBA Super Middleweight World Champion Rocky Fielding. Rocky?

ROCKY FIELDING: Thanks for having me on. Thank you. Yes, as you said, it’s a massive fight for me at Madison Square Garden and a big challenge in Canelo Alvarez. Camp has gone great, it’s gone well. Put everything I can into it. I sacrificed everything. So it’s gone well. Everything’s gone well. It’s going to pay off, hopefully, on December 15th.

ERIC GOMEZ: Great. Thank you very much, Rocky. Thank you to Team Rocky. Now, operator, we can open it up to questions.

Q. Hi, Eric and Jamie and Rocky. Thanks for taking the time. My question is for Rocky and then Jamie. In the United States, we have a saying where we say that someone might have a, quote, unquote, puncher’s chance to get the win. When someone is an underdog but has power, we say they have a puncher’s chance to win. Rocky, do you have a similar saying in the United Kingdom, and would you agree that you have what would be called a puncher’s chance against Canelo, or would you call it something else?
ROCKY FIELDING: Yeah, that’s what it is, I think, in the boxing world. That’s what they all say. We say it here in the UK. Yeah, it’s a puncher’s chance, but I mean, it’s the talent of the shots and the punches and stuff like that. I’m a good fighter, a good boxer. So it’s a good one.

If they say I have a puncher’s chance, then I’ll let them, but then December 15th I’ll show them what chance I do have, and if it’s a puncher’s chance, it may be, but if it’s not, then it’s not. It’s just whatever happens on December 15th. I’m prepared well, so we’ll have to see what happens.

Q. Jamie, what do you say? Do you think Rocky has a puncher’s chance or more than that?
JAMIE MOORE: He absolutely has more than a puncher’s chance. I think the term a puncher’s chance means someone who can hit but he’s relying on a bit of luck to land that shot whereas Rocky is much more of a rounded fighter than to just go in there and rely on hope to land a lucky shot. He’s a very intelligent fighter, and he’s underappreciated, I feel. I think that a lot of fighters, especially the ones who he spars, say you don’t realize how good he is or how unorthodox he is. We’ll certainly find that out on the night of the fight.

So as much as Alvarez, he’s going to find out about that. We’re going to ask him questions. There’s a lot of unanswered questions regarding him moving up to super middleweight. Height and reach advantage what Rocky’s got is huge. How is he going to cope with those problems, plus the fact that the size difference on the night? I know there’s a ten-pound weight limit for the next morning, but the actual difference from that point in time until they actually get in the ring on the night is going to be massive. You’ll see, when they come face to face in the middle of the ring, Rocky’s going to be huge, an absolutely huge specimen compared to Canelo.

So we know how good a fighter he is, but there’s a lot of questions what he needs to answer, and we’re going to make him answer.

Q. Thanks, everybody, for taking time to talk to us. The first question is for Jamie, and if Rocky wants to give his thoughts as well. Obviously, Canelo Alvarez is a top pound-for-pound superstar. He’s coming off the win against Golovkin. The question is how do you get sparring partners for Rocky to prepare him for the type of skill set that Canelo Alvarez has?
JAMIE MOORE: It’s obviously a very difficult task. You know, when you’re talking about the elite level fighters at the top of the pound for pound list, how do you sort of get sparring to match that? You really can’t. You have to — in my opinion, you have to take out the best attributes that that fighter has, someone with a real sharp jab like Canelo. You’d want to get a sparring partner who has a real good jab. Then you’ve got to try to get all the different best parts of the attributes as well and cover those with different sparring partners, but you’re never necessarily going to get all those covered with one sparring partner. You actually have a different range of it.

Me personally, I like to do a lot of tactical work and drills and different sort of the combinations are the punch selection, which I feel work in different fights. I’ll pick that up early on in camp, and we’ll drill it and drill it and drill it because I like the fighter to understand what I want him to do on the night well in advance, and by the time the fight comes around, we’ve drilled it that much that it becomes second nature. So as soon as he’s in a situation, he responds to it without even thinking about it.

And we nailed that down early on. I’ve been a big fan of Canelo for many years, so it didn’t take me that long to sort of pick up on his rhythm and his timing, his shot selection, the stuff he does well. The opportunities where I feel Rocky will get to him, we’ve picked out quite quick, and we’ve drilled it and drilled it, and Rocky is just pulling it off exactly how I would want him to do it at that point in camp.

Q. Rocky, obviously, you’ve been fighting in super middleweight for far longer than Canelo Alvarez. Canelo has never really had like a proper fight at 168 pounds. How much do you think it’s going to be an advantage for you already being accustomed to fighting bigger guys than what Canelo Alvarez has been used to throughout his career?
ROCKY FIELDING: Yeah, that’s the ingredient to the fight. I’m a big super middleweight, and he’s stepping up. That’s what makes it interesting to see how he is going to adapt to it and how he’s going to be. I’m at a weight to make the weight comfortable, and I’m okay at it. I don’t know how it’s going to be for him, but I’m at the best weight for myself.

It adds up. He’s a top fighter all around, and he brings that with him as well as moving up in the weight. He carries all that around. So it’s going to be interesting to see him from his last fight, to see how does in the pound step up (inaudible) and see if he accumulated muscle mass in this short of time. It will be interesting to see in the next week or so. It will be interesting compared to myself and how I make the weight and how I prepare. I make the weight, and then I fight. That’s how I’m prepared.

Q. Eric, obviously, The Zone went with Golden Boy soon after it unveiled in the U.S. To some, it may come with some risk and uncertainty. So when the opportunity to go on The Zone and go full in on this project, what about that potential partnership made you and Golden Boy confident that this could work? Was it The Zone’s long tradition? Was it getting ahead on the streaming service, the existing relationship they had with Matchroom Boxing, or was it any other factors?
ERIC GOMEZ: No, obviously, we believe in the product. We have tons and tons of data that we’ve compiled the last three years or so, and the landscape for television, especially for sports in television, is changing. It really is changing. The viewership on pay-per-views have been going down and down and down. When you have two massive fights back to back, Canelo versus Golovkin 1 and 2, and the online streaming services are outdoing the linear pay-per-view, it’s very compelling, it’s eye opening.

So I feel that the vision that Skipper has, John Skipper has for The Zone and some of the plans they have that I can’t really discuss at this time, we believe in them, and it’s going to be the future.

Q. Rocky, good afternoon. Less than two weeks away from the fight. How much pressure or how big does this feel to you, your first fight in the United States, against Canelo Alvarez in Madison Square Garden? How much of that enters your mind, and have you taken stock yet that this is the biggest moment of your career?
ROCKY FIELDING: Yeah, well, I’m enjoying it. This is what I’m in boxing for. This is what I’ve been doing in boxing since I was 9, for these nights. Where I’ve come from and my background and where I started professional in the sport, to fight at Madison Square Garden against the biggest name in boxing is unbelievable.

I’m not letting it get to me. I’m enjoying this, but I’m fully focused on it these past ten weeks, and I see it’s getting closer now. You know, I’m enjoying it. I’m going to go play soon. This is what we’re in boxing for, for these nights. So, yeah, it’s a great thing.

Q. A lot of people are looking at this fight for Canelo as a stepping stone fight for possibly a trilogy fight with Golovkin or a rematch with Mayweather. How does that make you feel? Does that add any more fuel to your fire heading into December 15th?
ROCKY FIELDING: That’s on them, and where I’m at, you can’t look past your next opponent. It’s up to them, and I’m fully focused on Canelo. That’s all that matters to me. It hasn’t bothered me whether he just signed a big deal or anything. I’m just fully focused on Canelo, and whatever else goes on with him or the rest of the fighters or fights, it doesn’t bother me. I’ve just got to be prepared and get ready for the 15th. That’s what I’m doing.

Q. Hi, I’ve got a question for Rocky. Everyone in the UK certainly is probably focused on what Tyson Fury did in America last weekend.
ROCKY FIELDING: Yeah.

Q. Do you feel like a little bit, in the public’s perception, you’re following that lead and you’re going to put up a really good show so the British can be proud of what we can do over in America?
ROCKY FIELDING: Yeah, definitely. That was a big, big fight for Tyson Fury. I was over the moon. We have like a bit of a crazy friendship. We both was in the ABA Finals together. We both (inaudible). We’ve both had the benefit of fighting for a world title. So it’s a great story. But Fury has been massive, massive the past couple days in the UK, and everyone is behind him, even the world for inspiration.

I’ve got good support coming over, and hopefully I’ll give it everything on the night, and everyone around the world supports me on it. I’m appreciative of it all.

Q. One follow-up on that, Rocky. Would this be like the biggest thing for you so far in your career? How do you think you would you feel if you actually beat Canelo?
ROCKY FIELDING: Well, I’m the superstar, aren’t I? And as I said to be honest, every fighter you meet — I started my pro debut in Lancashire with a couple hundred people. And that’s where I started for the last eight to nine years of my professional career. And I’ve had a lot of setbacks outside the ring and stuff like that. So to be coming to Madison Square Garden to fight the biggest name in boxing, I’m going prepared and going to win and that’s all I can do. As I said, I wake up the next day and I’m the face of boxing, and it’s a great feeling.

Q. Rocky, what was your thoughts when the Canelo fight first came across your desk?
ROCKY FIELDING: Yeah, it was a big surprise. And I don’t think anyone expected in terms (indiscernible). I just accepted this. When Jamie called me up to say Canelo wants to fight you, and do you want this tab open? I said, yeah, let’s do it. And it’s a massive challenge and let’s do it and that was it. So the answer was yeah. And that’s it really, yeah. Offered the challenge, and it is.

Q. You went over to Germany to defeat Tyron Zeuge of the WBA. Is there anything you can draw from that fight to kind of prepare you for coming over to America to fight Canelo?
ROCKY FIELDING: Obviously traveling away from home and getting the win like I did is a big achievement, especially in January. No one gave me a chance and not many fighters get chances and scorecards are always dodgey. But I just feel like the whole thing, obviously it’s a lot, lot bigger. Everyone knows the arena, the media, everything’s a lot bigger. So apart from that, it’s a ring and that’s it; wherever the ring is, you fight. Fighters fight. And that’s it.

But, yeah, I take things from it as far as being far away from home and getting the win, like I said, it’s a lot bigger as a whole — media and obviously the (indiscernible)– I’ll be there in the (indiscernible). But I’m going to enjoy them. This is a night, that’s what boxing’s for. I’m going to enjoy it, though.

Q. Earlier this year, Canelo had a heat cup [phonetic], a VADA testing. He popped clean for Clenbuterol. Now is VADA testing a part of this fight? And if it’s not, do you guys have any concern about a re– not a reoccurrence, but just is there any concern about the previous test?
ROCKY FIELDING: No. I mean I haven’t locked into it. I’m getting tested and stuff. I’m standing up with VADA. But that’s it; I’m just concerned about myself and I’m not really locking into (indiscernible) whatever the past has happened. Just focused on myself and that’s it whatever has happened in the past has happened and that’s it really.

Q. In order for Rocky Fielding to beat Canelo, he must do what?
ROCKY FIELDING: What Tyson said, just punch him in the face hard until he goes down. I mean, I’ve worked on techniques with Jamie for the past 11 weeks. As I say, I’ve just gotta do what I’ve gotta do. I believe what we worked on and what I can do can cause a lot of damage and a lot of — a lot more than what people are thinking. People are thinking I’m going there and actually (indiscernible). I’ve prepared well and I’m prepared to give it everything I’ve got. I believe boxing, fight — the best fight the best, and the best comes out of me. And I have enough fear factor and everything about it, and (indiscernible). I’ll perform well and I’ll give it everything I’ve got. And if I have to (indiscernible) boxing, I boxing, and everything that we worked on with Jamie, it will come off on the December 15th and that’s all I can do.

Q. Rocky, when the fight was originally presented to you, was there a moment where you said to yourself this is something I need to think about, take my time to make a decision, or did you know right away that you were going to accept the fight, and this is exactly what you were looking for?
ROCKY FIELDING: Yeah, Jamie is there on the phone. He can tell you. Jaime called me up and told me about the fight and said it was done and the first answer was yes. Why wait? So answer was yes straightaway. And that was it.

JAMIE MOORE: The exact conversation went: Canelo Álvarez wants to fight you. He went: Serious? And I went: Yeah. And he went: Let’s do it. He literally took it straightaway.

ROCKY FIELDING: There was no thinking, like, I know who he is and all and everything. I think as a fighter — and to be honest, you can ask at the end that every fight that he has ever presented to me I’ve said yes to straightaway. A fight whether it’s a fight I didn’t needed to fight (indiscernible). I just said, yeah, because that’s the fighter in me. That’s why I don’t like to say no to fights. But this is obviously a guy who is the face of boxing, pound for pound, and everything. So why not — yeah, straightaway. Massive challenge. I’ll go in there and I’ll fight the best pound for pound and go in there and do what I’ve got to do to and get the win. And I’m the next superstar.

Where I’m at in my career now, it was yes (indiscernible), go and win a title. And you want to be the best, you have to fight the best. And this is where I’m at.

Q. How have things changed, whether the fans or the media attention, or just the attention that you’re getting from the fans and the media before fighting the fight and after, do you feel like you’re going to have a big support in MSG on fight night?
ROCKY FIELDING: Yeah. Obviously the media stuff is obviously stepped up a lot bigger and it’s been nonstop. But we have had fans, where we’ve cut it off with the camp, to get the training done and stuff. So we’ve got to do that well.

And, yeah, getting stopped in the streets where I’m from, people — a lot more than what I usually would about the fights. I’m getting great support. Everyone’s supporting me.

And I’ve got a couple of ones coming over there, I’d say 800 to a thousand coming over, and there will be more than 15 or 20,000 that we get.

So everything’s been, in that sense, has been big. But I’m being me, been going to the gym, doing my way and I’ve been coming home and getting my rest and doing that and looking after the kids.

And the rest will come the way it always has. And apart from what you’ve seen in the media, it’s got a bit bigger and it’s boxing. Obviously it comes with who I’m fighting.

So once I put the phone down from Jamie, when I accepted, I knew — I prepared myself for what was coming, the storm that I knew was going to come, I knew all the media was going to come. I had it in my mind and everything that in my mind is how it’s going now. So I’ve took it all well. And I’ve been doing it. And this is why boxing being the elite on top is about. And so here I am.

Q. Eric, can you talk a little bit about the planning and the thinking of bringing Canelo to Madison Square Garden and kind of what was the driving force to that? A lot of his big fights were in Las Vegas. And depending on the success and magnitude of the event in two weeks, do you think we’ll be seeing Canelo more often on the East Coast?
ERIC GOMEZ: First of all, thank you for being on the call. You know, he’s always wanted to fight in New York. He’s always wanted to fight in New York. It seems like the last three years he’s been — he’s been talking to Oscar and myself about fighting in New York and obviously at the Garden. He’s a big fan of Muhammad Ali and idolizes Muhammad Ali.

And to fight at the mecca of boxing where all the greats have fought — Oscar fought there as well. It’s something that he always wanted to do. So we’re very excited, extremely excited that we were able to squeeze in one more fight in December after having such a tough fight in September with Golovkin, the rematch.

So for him, it’s going to be a great experience; and, yes, of course, we’re open coming to do more fights in New York. No problem. Everything seems to be going well, smooth. Ticket sales are great. We’re expecting a sell-out. And if everything goes as planned, why not?

Q. Jamie, is there any strategy on your part to perhaps take the fight into deep waters; do you feel that you have a better shot the longer the fight goes?
JAMIE MOORE: I don’t necessarily think we have to do that, no. I think — will it go in our favor? I think maybe. I think the size advantage and the longer the fight goes, especially if it’s a physical fight, that definitely could play in our hands.

What Rocky — I don’t think Rocky’s record really tells the tale of how hard he punches. And although Canelo has shown that he’s got a great chin against Golovkin, Golovkin’s power is very much sort of a raw power; whereas, Rocky, a lot of his is based off timing, timing of his shots. And the reason his record doesn’t really suggest how hard he hits, a lot of the guys he boxed early on, you saw go in there to survive; you can’t get the shots off in time. So they’re probably able to fiddle their way through against somebody with the shot power that Rocky has.

So to answer your question, I think Rocky is capable of finishing the fight at any time. He really just kind of has that power. But the longer the fight goes, you know, tactically we’ve set a game plan out there that, by sort of the middle rounds, Rocky should have a real fold in the fight and then if it plays out the way I think it’s going to play, it will be our fight to lose.

Q. Rocky, we’ve seen Golovkin hit Canelo pretty clean with some big shots that probably would have dropped other fighters. And Canelo was able to withstand it and come back and throw his own shots. Does that change anything for you in terms of the preparation for the fight; whereas, maybe you’re looking at different techniques and strategies to not be able to necessarily have to stop Canelo, but be able to outbox him or do something with timing?
ROCKY FIELDING: Yes, definitely. As you’re saying, Golovkin took a wailing. And I think it’s all about the timing and how you get the shots is — it’s almost the shots that you don’t see with the (indiscernible). I’ve just been working on what I’m preparing and what we feel will do the job. And as I say we say, my record (indiscernible) and stoppages in there. So that was some of that. We’ll see. [Audio cutting out] (indiscernible) what you get off from the meeting and the timing and everything and I believe [Audio cutting out] (indiscernible).

JAMIE MOORE: You can definitely take a shot better when you see it coming (indiscernible) or ride it. I think the big right hands that he took by Golovkin, obviously powerful shots. He did see him coming and he sort of rolled it and took the thing out of the shot. So which is obviously a great attribute (indiscernible) [Audio cutting out] the style. The shots you don’t see come in. And they’re the ones that do the real damage. So it is a difference between the shots Golovkin was hitting him with and the shots I anticipate Rocky will hit him with.

The thrilling Deontay Wilder vs. Tyson Fury heavyweight blockbuster, a sure-fire Fight of the Year candidate, will air on SHOWTIME this Saturday, December 8 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The WBC Heavyweight World Championship bout between the 6-foot-7 unbeaten American champion Wilder and 6-foot-9 challenger Fury originally aired live on SHOWTIME PPV® on Saturday, December 1 from STAPLES Center in Los Angeles.

On Saturday, both Wilder and Fury made strong cases for 2018 Fighter of the Year honors. Wilder faced the two toughest opponents of his career this year including a spectacular knockout win over Cuban slugger Luis Ortiz in a Fight of the Year candidate in March. Fury, the lineal heavyweight champion, returned from a two-and-a-half-year layoff to score two wins in a span of 10 weeks before facing Wilder. On Saturday, he miraculously withstood a devastating, final-round knockdown that appeared to knock him out cold. Fury rose dramatically and continued to fight until the final bell to cap an effort that will go down as one of the greatest comeback stories in all of sports.

The SHOWTIME presentation of the Wilder vs. Fury, a bout that has been hailed as “…the greatest night for boxing in the U.S. in recent memory,” by Yahoo! Sports, will be immediately followed by the premiere of ALL ACCESS: WILDER vs. FURY EPILOGUE. ZERAFA: BROOK IS UNDERESTIMATING ME

Michael Zerafa has accused Kell Brook of overlooking him and says he’ll thrive off the underdog status when they clash at the FlyDSA Arena in Sheffield this Saturday, live on Sky Sports in the UK and DAZN in the US.

Zerafa, 26, is a former Commonwealth Super-Welterweight Champion and has secured 14 of his 25 wins via knockout. He has lost just two of his 27 professional fights, including a stoppage loss to former WBO Middleweight ruler Peter Quillin in 2015.

The Melbourne fighter admits that former IBF World Champion Brook is another step up in class but says he is ready for whatever the Sheffield star throws at him.

“I’m really up for this fight, I’m in the best condition of my life,” said Zerafa. “Halfway through the first round Brook and his team will realise they’ve underestimated me.

“I’ve got two losses on my record but that was years ago. I was a kid back then and very inexperienced. Now I’m a more complete fighter, more power, more speed & more boxing IQ.

“I respect Kell Brook, he’s a great fighter and he’s been at a higher level than me for longer, but that’s exactly why he’s looking past me. I’m going to make a lot of people eat their words.

“This is the biggest opportunity of my career, I’m taking it with both hands and I’m definitely going to put on a show in Sheffield. I’m going into this fight with absolutely nothing to lose.”

Brook’s clash with Zerafa tops a huge night of boxing in the Steel City.

Unbeaten Irish star Jono Carroll faces French former European Champion Guillaume Frenois in a final eliminator to become mandatory challenger to IBF Super-Featherweight World Champion Tevin Farmer.

Rising Welterweight star Josh Kelly steps up in class as he takes on former WBA World Champion David Avanesyan in his ninth professional contest.

Explosive Liverpool Super-Welterweight Anthony Fowler is in title action as he targets a showdown with newly-crowned British Champion Ted Cheeseman in 2019 and IBF no.1 Featherweight contender Kid Galahad stays busy with an eye on the winner of Josh Warrington vs. Carl Frampton.

Sheffield is well represented on the undercard with Welterweight Anthony Tomlinson, Super-Middleweight Callum Hancock and Middleweight Shakiel Thompson all in action, while Leeds Super-Bantamweight Qais Ashfaq and Denaby Lightweight Terri Harper also feature.

Tickets for Brook vs. Zerafa priced at £40, £60, £100 and £200 (Inner Ring VIP) are available to purchase via StubHub (www.stubhub.co.uk) FlyDSA Arena (www.flydsaarena.co.uk) and Matchroom Boxing (www.matchroomboxing.com)

MURRAY: “I THINK PEOPLE WANT TO SEE ME RETIRE MORE THAN I DO! I AM A SURVIVOR!

THE WELL USED label of ‘crossroads fight’ is one that is familiar to Martin Murray, more than most.

The particular piece of boxing terminology was again being bandied about in his direction when his potential barnstormer against Hassan N’Dam was announced for the Manchester Arena on December 22 in support of his stablemate, Carl Frampton, challenging for the IBF world featherweight title held by Josh Warrington.

Middleweight Murray now uses the mere mention of retirement as motivation to keep on winning. He is not having one last one for the road because the 36-year-old still firmly believes he has got a world title win in him.

However, if he were to lose another fight, he will call it quits and that has been the case since he suffered a points reverse to George Groves in June 2016.

“I know how important it is to win anyway, but I think people want to see me retire!” quipped the four-time world title challenger.

“The stakes are high and I think people do want to see me retire more than I do because it gets thrown in my face all the time.

“I’m a survivor. I’ve just been surviving and surviving and it always seems to be one loss and I will be retired. I’ve had that, well, since the Groves fight and I’ve not lost since.”

Despite being one loss away from collecting his punching pension, the force of Murray is showing no signs of diminishing and he demonstrated that he remains in the belt collecting business with the hard-fought victory over Roberto Garcia for the WBC Silver title last time out in June.

“I’m feeling great, you know, really good. I am one loss away from retirement, although I don’t want to retire, I know it is one loss away. So I am focusing, training hard and really enjoying the work at the minute.

“I keep getting the crossroads fight thing thrown at me by people. A really good mate of mine, a couple of months ago, said to me that after the Groves loss he never thought I would still be here.
“Everybody wrote me off after Groves, but I have just survived, scrapped and scraped – and I am still here.

“I am in a tough fight now, a meaningful fight and I am just focused on getting a win against a good live opponent.”

IBF world featherweight champion Josh Warrington takes on former two-weight world champion Carl Frampton at the Manchester Arena on December 22nd live on BT Sport Box Office. Mark Heffron and Liam Williams contest the vacant British middleweight title and Belfast’s blue chip featherweight prospect Michael Conlan (9-0) takes on former commonwealth champion Jason Cunningham (24-5). In a step up, Nathan Gorman puts his undefeated record and WBC International Silver Heavyweight Title on the line against former World Title challenger Alex Leapai. Tyson Fury’s younger brother Tommy Fury also makes his professional debut.

Elsewhere on the bill. World flyweight title challenger Paddy Barnes (5-1) and unbeaten Light Heavyweight contender Steven Ward (9-0) return to action. Manchester’s 12-0 Light Heavyweight Lyndon Arthur and 7-0 Darlington middleweight Troy Williamson also return.

Tickets are priced at £50 Upper Tier, £80 Tier, £100 Tier, £150 Tier, £200 Floor/Tier, £300 Floor, £400 Floor, £600 Inner Ring VIP Hospitality and are available.

Tickets available via Manchester Arena.

ALGIERI ROCKS THE HOUSE IN RETURN TO THE PARAMOUNT

CHRIS ALGIERI (22-3 8KO’s) returned to the Star Boxing’s acclaimed venue, The Paramount in Huntington, NY for the first time in over four years as the former WBO Super Lightweight champion looked spectacular in dismantling a game and rugged
ANGEL HERNANDEZ (14-12-2 9KO’s) from McAllen, TX over the 10 round distance of a Jr Welterweight contest in the main event of Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing Rockin Fights 33 before a frenzied sold-out standing room only crowd last night.

Algieri took control from the outset as he displayed the superb boxing skills he is known for but under new head trainer Andre Rozier, Chris has added another dimension to his already potent offense. Chris worked at a very high rate and threw numerous impressive multi punch combinations to both the body and head of Hernandez. Algieri displayed tremendous hand speed and his usual impeccable conditioning. Hernandez for his part tried the best he could and moved forward the entire fast paced fight but was no match in skills of the former world champion and in the end Algieri came away with the unanimous decision, 100-90, 100-90, and 99-91 improving to 22-3 8KO’s while Hernandez dropped to 14-12-2 9KO’s.

The semi-final 8 round Welterweight bout pitted Elmont’s TYRONE “PRETTY BOY” JAMES (9-0 6KO’s) and LEONARDO CARRIZALES (5-6-1 2KO’s), Tampico, MX. They certainly didn’t disappoint the sold out crowd as they put on a wild bout which saw James score a sensational 8th round TKO after a series of eye opening uppercuts. James started out boxing beautifully over the first 5 rounds landing vicious shots to the ever charging Carriales who also landed his fair share of blows. In the 6th round the fight took a dramatic turn as Carrizales landed a blistering right hand to the jaw of James dropping “Pretty Boy” for the first time in his career. James arose on very wobbly legs but hung in there to finish the round. The final 2 rounds saw wild action between these two fighters as they stood toe to toe trading bombs with each other, much to the delight of the crowd. The end came as James cornered Carrizales and landed 5 straight vicious uppercuts which had Carrizales’ head moving like a Jack N Box and forcing the ref to call a halt to the bout at the 42 second mark of the final frame. James improves to 9-0 6KO’s while Carrizales drops to 5-6-1 2KO’s.

Undefeated Lightweights OMAR BORDOY (7-0 2KO’s) and TEREL BOSTIC (3-1 1KO), put on a fight to remember over the 6 round distance. Danbury, CT’s Bordoy took the fight right to the local Wynadanch fighter, Bostic, as they went back and forth in a high paced, skillful match. Bordoy dropped Bostic with a monstrous right hand in the 3rd round and tried his best to finish Bostic but was unable to do so. Bostic came out for round 4 and took the fight right to Bordoy getting the best of the action. The final 2 rounds had the crowd going wild as the 2 young fighters traded freely and in the end Bordoy came away with a split decision winning 58-55 on two card while Bostic prevailed on the 3rd card 57-56.

ALEX VARGAS (2-0) won a hard fout 4 round decision over Rochester’s JARRILL HAADI (0-1), getting off the deck in the first round to do so by scores of 38-37 across the board and Jr. Welterweight DASHAUN JOHNS made his pro debut a successful one taking out late sub DEVON GRANT in the first round.

Promoter JOE DEGUARDIA had this to say about the fights: “What a spectacular night of fights. The Paramount was electric and Chris Algieri confirmed that he wants to regain his world championship belt. We plan on providing Chris with another world title opportunity in 2019. He is a skilled and dedicated boxer and will give any title holder at 140 lbs. an exciting and tough challenge. Congratulations to all of Friday nights fighters on a exciting and action-packed night of fights, and thank you to our great fans”

TYSON FURY TABS WELTERWEIGHT LEE REEVES AS NEXT IRISH BOXING SUPERSTAR

TORONTO, ON—Just one fight into his professional career and welterweight prospect Lee Reeves is already catching the eyes of the right people. In this case, the eyes of the person the world will be watching this weekend.

The Irish standout, who recently signed a promotional deal with Lee Baxter Promotions in Canada, caught the eye of lineal heavyweight champion Tyson Fury with his scintillating third round knockout victory over Benito Aburto on November 17 in Toronto.

“Looks like Ireland has a new boxing star,” said Fury, who has also made stops in Canada throughout his career, defeating Zack Page in 2010 in Quebec City, and holding his training camp for his breakout victory over Steve Cunningham in the nation’s capital of Ottawa.

Reeves is unquestionably one of the best Irish amateurs of his era, having collected eight Limerick championships and eight Munster championships to go along with his pair of Irish national titles. During his years as a competitive boxer, campaigning mostly as a light welterweight, he never failed to appear in the national final at year’s end.

In his first professional contest, he made a seamless transition, looking like the accurate, powerful counterpuncher the scouting report promised he would be. A laser accurate left hand eventually mounted enough punishment for the referee to stop the contest in the third frame, to the delight of the raucous Irish contingent present in Toronto.

“He’s fast, talented and super sexy. Actually He reminds me of someone–me,” he said. “I’ll definitely be following his career and tuning in to his next fight December 15th in Toronto.”

Reeves will return on the 15th on the LBP event at the Coca-Cola Coliseum, headlined by Samuel Vargas vs. Gabriel Pereiro.

HEAVYWEIGHT LEGENDS ROUNDTABLE QUOTES

LOS ANGELES (November 30, 2018) – One day before the most significant heavyweight event in the U.S. in over 15 years, heavyweight legends have descended on Los Angeles to discuss the Deontay Wilder vs. Tyson Fury showdown that will be live on SHOWTIME PPV® Saturday night from STAPLES Center in an event presented by Premier Boxing Champions.

A media roundtable featured heavyweight greats Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis, Riddick Bowe, Gerry Cooney, Earnie Shavers, Buster Douglas and Michael Spinks as they broke down Saturday’s battle of unbeaten giants.

Tickets for the event, which is promoted by BombZquad Enterprises and Queensberry Promotions, in association with TGB Promotions and DiBella Entertainment, are on sale now and are available via AXS.com. Wilder vs. Fury will be produced and distributed by SHOWTIME PPV. The suggested retail price (SRP) for the pay-per-view telecast is $64.99 for standard definition.

The roundtable was hosted by SHOWTIME Sports award-winning reporter Jim Gray from the Westin Bonaventure Hotel & Suites, Los Angeles. Here is what the heavyweight legends had to say Friday:

EVANDER HOLYFIELD

“I feel that Deontay Wilder will win because eventually he’ll land that right hand. He’s very patient. He’s a thinker, but he can also take chances. When people take chances, they win.

“Deontay might not have as much experience as we did in our day, but he’s got the power. That’s what the people want to see and I think they’re going to be happy when they see it.

“There was a point in time where every great heavyweight was from the United States. We had a very good amateur program. I was the last true heavyweight champion from the U.S. before Wilder and until I lost the decision against Lennox.

“To be the heavyweight champion of the world, and to say you’re the best, you have to fight any man.”

LENNOX LEWIS

“I think it’s going to be a great fight. Deontay Wilder has a terrific right hand and when it lands, not too many people can stand up to it. I also think that you can’t hurt what you can’t hit. Tyson Fury is not an easy person to hit. He has great ability and movement. I’m going with Deontay early or Fury late.

“We all know how it feels to lose the heavyweight championship. We know how hard it is to gain it back. Fury has lost it, and now he wants it back. I can see now that he’s sacrificing and saying to himself that he shouldn’t have lost it, and now he has to regain it.

“I think the view in the U.K. is that Tyson Fury is the man that stepped up. The gauntlet was thrown out there and he stood up for Britain. Deontay came to England to challenge Anthony Joshua, but it was Tyson Fury who answered the call.

“I would say that there are a couple of meccas in boxing that are places where everyone wants to fight. Las Vegas, New York and of course, Los Angeles. My fight against Vitali Klitschko at STAPLES Center was a great fight. My plan that night was not to box to go the distance, I boxed to go a short distance and it did.”

RIDDICK BOWE

“I’m going with Deontay Wilder tomorrow night. He’s going to put on a great show for everyone and get another knockout.

“Tyson Fury is skilled and tall, but to me, he doesn’t do enough on offense. He moves but he doesn’t move his hands enough.”

GERRY COONEY

“I think it’s a great fight tomorrow night. We know that Fury is coming back motivated. If Wilder finds a home for that right, he’s going to take Fury out. I think he’s going to connect at some point during the fight.

“I think Tyson Fury is a great man for how far he’s come back in his life and for standing up to Deontay Wilder. Fury called him out, so maybe he knows something we don’t know.

“I’m so glad to be up here. Look at all these great heavyweights and great guys. It’s special and they’re all here to watch this fight tomorrow night.”

EARNIE SHAVERS

“Me and Deontay are both from Alabama. I’ll be inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame soon and Deontay will be there one day as well. Deontay is a great puncher and I’m pulling for him tomorrow night.

“I fought in a great era. If you fight guys on the same level, you’ll get good fights. These guys today could get in there in our day and put on a good show.”

BUSTER DOUGLAS

“I think this is going to be a good competitive fight. If I had to pick, I’d take Deontay Wilder by knockout in the eighth round.

“I feel like Tyson Fury has already won by battling back and getting into great shape and being in this position. I’m sure many people thought they’d never see him back here. That’s a victory in itself.

“My victory over Mike Tyson changed my life in a great way. I was now the heavyweight champion of the world. My dream had come true. Seeing my two youngest kids being born was the only thing that could top it.”

MICHAEL SPINKS

“May the best man win. I don’t know who’s in the best of shape but I think Fury being out of the ring makes me lean toward Deontay Wilder. If Fury is as big in person as they say he is, he’s got a great chance.

“If you’re the underdog, you just have to go on what you know and what you’ve worked on. You can’t pay attention to the doubters. You focus on what you’ve prepared yourself for and give it your all. I always saw myself winning. It’s the greatest feeling to come out of the ring victorious.”

ADONIS STEVENSON vs. OLEKSANDR GVOZDYK FINAL WEIGHTS

QUEBEC CITY (November 30, 2018) – Boxing’s longest reigning world champion, Adonis Stevenson, and undefeated, mandatory challenger Oleksandr Gvozdyk made weight Friday just one day ahead of Stevenson’s 10th defense of his WBC Light Heavyweight Title in a SHOWTIME BOXING: SPECIAL EDITION telecast Saturday, December 1 from Videotron Center in Quebec City.

SHOWTIME BOXING: SPECIAL EDITION will air live on SHOWTIME and stream for free on the SHO Sports YouTube channel and the SHOWTIME Boxing Facebook Page beginning at 7:45 p.m. ET/4:45 p.m. PT, immediately preceding the Deontay Wilder vs. Tyson Fury SHOWTIME PPV. Wilder vs. Fury begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and also features unified 154-pound world champion Jarrett Hurd returning to take on Jason Welborn, Cuban heavyweight slugger Luis Ortiz facing off against Travis Kauffman and rising heavyweight Joe Joyce battling Joe Hanks.

FINAL WEIGHTS

WBC Light Heavyweight World Championship Bout – 12 Rounds

Adonis Stevenson – 174 ¼ pounds

Oleksandr Gvozdyk – 174 ½ pounds

Referee: Michael Griffin (Canada); Judges: Guido Cavalleri (Italy), Mike Ross (USA), Jack Woodburn (Canada)

FLASH QUOTES:

ADONIS STEVENSON:

“I know that Gvozdyk is a good boxer, he was a bronze medalist at the Olympics and he has a European style. His movement is good and he has good technique but there are definitely weaknesses that I plan to exploit.

“I don’t care at all that the bookmakers think I’m going to lose this fight. I’ve been the champion since 2013 and so many people have doubted me in all of my defenses. If I let that affect me, I would have lost my belt a long time ago.

“I’m very hungry. I want to win this fight by knockout. My hometown fans don’t come here to watch me fight 12 rounds, they want to see a body on the canvas. They’re always looking for the knockout and so am I. I know that all I have to do is touch him once and it’s check mate.”

OLEKSANDR GVOZDYK:

“I believe I’m ready physically to do what I have to do. I have to be quicker, smarter, more concentrated and always one step ahead of Stevenson. His left hand is the stronger one but I can’t forget about his right hand either.

“Working with Teddy [Atlas] has been a great experience. He’s been a mentor for me. He’s a very demanding guy who won’t let me get away with a single mistake. That’s exactly what I need. He can help me tactically and even physically, we rebuilt our regular training pattern and I believe it will pay off.

“Despite Stevenson’s age, he’s still a very strong fighter. I know what he’s going to try to do. Like he said at the press conference, he’s going to wait for me to make a mistake to try to catch me. I have to be patient and 100 percent concentrated the entire fight. No blinking.”

GORMAN: TYSON WILL MAKE HIM MISS AND MAKE HIM PAY

Nathan Gorman insists there is no bias in his assessment of huge heavyweight showdown on Saturday night when he forecasts Deontay Wilder barely being able to lay a glove on the elusive force that is Tyson Fury.

The 22-year-old Gorman – who fights Alex Leapai on the bumper Warrington-Frampton pre-Christmas boxing bonanza on December 22 at the Manchester Arena – is a distant relative of the Furys and the pair also share a UK training base at Ricky Hatton’s gym in Hyde.

The 14-0 WBC International Silver title holder, however, states that his fight predictions are not based on any loyalties, just personal experience of seeing Tyson up close and personal.

“I would say truthfully and without bias at all, whatever I thought,” explained the Nantwich-based heavy. “I have never sparred with Wilder, but from sharing a ring with Tyson I just can’t see Wilder beating him, I really can’t.

“I just think Wilder will get frustrated with Tyson when he can’t hit him, he will load up big swings and Tyson will make him miss and make him pay.

“He is too clever, he has got too much in the arsenal for him and he is a big 6ft 9″ switch-hitter – and he is really, really awkward,” added Gorman, who admitted to being shocked by the stealth of Tyson when he first got in the ring with him.

“Definitely, I’ve also seen him take the p*ss out of world class sparring partners.”

One thing, Gorman acknowledges, that cannot be legislated for is if Wilder manages to land the lottery punch.

“Obviously, getting onto that, it is 36 minutes and Wilder only needs one punch because he is the most dangerous heavyweight out there, isn’t he? He is more dangerous than Joshua in my opinion and if he hits you, you are going out.

“But, I just can’t see Tyson letting him do that. It is heavyweight
boxing though, so you never know.”

Watch Wilder-Fury live on BT Sport Box Office on Saturday night.

Elsewhere on the bill. World flyweight title challenger Paddy Barnes (5-1) and unbeaten Light Heavyweight contender Steven Ward (9-0) return to action. Manchester’s 12-0 Light Heavyweight Lyndon Arthur and 7-0 Darlington middleweight Troy Williamson also return.

Tickets are priced at £50 Upper Tier, £80 Tier, £100 Tier, £150 Tier, £200 Floor/Tier, £300 Floor, £400 Floor, £600 Inner Ring VIP Hospitality and are available.

MANNY PACQUIAO IS BACK IN TRAINING AND BACK ON THE JOB IN THE SENATE!

MANILA (November 30, 2018) — With speaking engagements to the students of the Oxford Union and the Cambridge Union and a whirlwind U.S. media tour to announce his WBA welterweight world title defense against former four-division world champion Adrien Broner behind him, boxer laureate Senator MANNY “Pacman” PACQUIAO is back in Manila, working three shifts and two jobs daily. For Pacquiao, it’s just another day in the office. Make that offices — his gym and the Philippine Senate.

Boxing’s only eight-division world champion and the BWAA’s reigning Fighter of the Decade, Pacquiao (60-7-2, 39 KOs), is putting in 14 to 16-hour days training for his upcoming fight against Cincinnati’s Broner (33-3-1, 24 KOs) and serving his constituents. Until the current Senate session ends, on December 12, Pacquiao’s typical work day begins at 6:30 a.m. with a 5.2-mile run followed by strength and conditioning work. After that it is breakfast and Senate work, followed by a two-hour gym session. Following a quick lunch, Pacquiao is off to the Senate where his second work day begins around 1:30 p.m. and usually ends no earlier than 8:30 p.m., where he heads home to dinner with his family.

On Monday, Pacquiao, one of the few senators to take on the cigarette/tobacco lobby, gave a speech to the plenary making another push for his Senate Bill 1599, which he first introduced in 2017, seeking to raise the excise tax on tobacco products.

Citing the benefits of “The Sin Tax Reform Act,” which was passed in 2012, and resulted in a significant decrease in the number of smokers, Pacquiao said, in a privilege speech, “The main objective for the proposal of this bill is to save lives. This goes to show that increasing tobacco tax works. However, because of increasing incomes and population, it is expected that, without any increase in the tobacco tax, we can expect one million new smokers by year 2022.” Additionally, Pacquiao said that the number of Filipino smokers would decrease by one million while generating 30 to 40 billion pesos in incremental revenues. Pacquiao’s entire text of his speech can be accessed via this link: https://senate.gov.ph/press_release/2018/1126_pacquiao1.asp.

Once the Philippine Senate session concludes, Manny will return to his home in General Santos City where he will continue training. There will be one interruption — his fortieth birthday celebration on December 17. Pacquiao and his team will depart for the U.S., on December 22, and begin phase two of his training at Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, Calif.

Regarding Pacquiao’s first week of training camp, here is what the team had to say.

“It is good to be back home in the Philippines. It is time to get to work. I have to really focus and train hard for this fight,” said Pacquiao. “I am excited for January 19. Excited to be facing Adrien Broner. Excited to be back at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, my second home, fighting in front of my fans.”

“Training has been good so far. It is great to be back to training. After two weeks, we will be in very good condition. Manny is still very aggressive and still hungry. I have to make sure that we do our best as trainers to prepare Manny for Adrien Broner just like we did for the Lucas Matthysse fight,” said Buboy Fernandez, Pacquiao’s trainer.

Added Justin Fortune, Pacquiao’s strength and conditioning coach, “We have had good training sessions. We started the week off slowly with light training , but it has become stronger as the week progressed because Manny came into camp in great shape. He is very fresh and very strong.”

A three-time Fighter of the Year, Pacquiao, who hails from Sarangani Province in the Philippines, is the only sitting Congressman and Senator to win a world title. After serving two terms as Congressman, Pacquiao was elected to a Philippine Senate seat in May 2016, capturing over 16 million votes nationally. Pacquiao’s boxing resume features victories over at least seven current and future Hall of Famers, including Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley, and Juan Manuel Marquez. In his last fight, with Philippine President Rodrigo R. Duterte and Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad in attendance (the first time two heads of state attended a championship boxing event), Pacquaio, 39, regained the welterweight title for a fourth time with a vintage performance on July 15 at Axiata Arena in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia, by knocking out defending WBA champion Lucas Matthyssee in the seventh round.

The Pacquiao vs. Broner world championship event will take place Saturday, January 19 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Pacquiao vs. Broner and its co-main event fights will be produced and distributed live by SHOWTIME PPV® and presented by Premier Boxing Champions beginning at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT.

Promoted by MP Promotions, Mayweather Promotions and TGB Promotions in association with About Billions Promotions, remaining tickets to the Pacquiao vs. Broner welterweight world championship event are priced at $1,500, $1,000, $750, $500, $300, $200, $100, not including applicable service charges, and can be purchased online throughAXS.com, charge by phone at 866-740-7711 or in person at any MGM Resorts International box office.

WARRINGTON AND FRAMPTON PREDICT WILDER VS FURY RESULT

Josh Warrington and Carl Frampton took five minutes out from preparations for their upcoming IBF world featherweight contest on December 22nd to share their thoughts on this weekend’s heavyweight blockbuster showdown between WBC world heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder and the lineal heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury.

Carl Frampton – “When it was first made I strongly fancied Wilder. As the fight has got closer, I’ve been changing my mind. Looking at Fury’s shape and he is in good shape. In the pics I have seen he looks better than he ever has before.

“There are loads of questions to be asked. Has Fury lost too much weight? Is his inactivity going to cost him? How’s he going to be able to deal with Wilder’s punching power? Difficult one to call, but right now I’m leaning very slightly towards Deontay Wilder.”

Josh Warrington- “I said Fury when the fight first got made and I haven’t changed my mind, got to go for Tyson Fury for the win!

“Of course, you can’t rule out Wilder as he has some serious power in those fists and has proved it time and time again, but Fury’s size and ring IQ will prove crucial. I can honestly see him out-boxing and frustrating Wilder for 12 rounds.”

Watch Wilder-Fury live on BT Sport Box Office on Saturday night.
