Greg Cohen Promotions, Murphy’s Boxing and 12 Round Promotions Sign Undefeated Super Featherweight Abraham ‘El Super’ Nova to Multi-Year Co-Promotional Contract

Greg Cohen Promotions (GCP), Murphy’s Boxing and 12 Round Promotions are proud to announce the signing of undefeated super featherweight Abraham “El Super” Nova to a multi-year co-promotional contract.

Nova (12-0, 10 KOs), born in Puerto Rico and now residing in Albany, New York, has looked like a future champion while trotting the globe and winning all his fights. The 24-year-old was last seen in May, scoring a KO 7 over Italy’s Hassan Nourdine at the RTL Spiroudome in Charleroi, Belgium.

Before his 2016 debut, Nova had an incredible amateur career in which he went 167-11 with 60 KOs and was once the #1 ranked 141-lb. boxer in the United States. The prestigious titles he won include national and international victories at the 2014 USA Nationals, the 2014 Independent World Cup in the Dominican, and Gold at the 2014 Cheo Aponte Tournament, and the 2015 Olympic Qualifiers. He is also a five-time New York Golden Gloves Champion.

“I’m very happy I got to associate myself with people of such good quality,” said a happy Abraham of the deal. “I’m looking forward to winning a world title in the very near future!”

“This is a fantastic young fighter and I want to thank my partners, Ken Casey from Murphy’s Boxing and Alain Vanackère from 12 Round,” said Greg Cohen of GCP. “Abraham Nova is an extreme talent and will soon be a world champion. He’s also a pleasure to work with and I’m very happy to be involved.”

“Murphy’s Boxing have been lucky enough to work with Abraham Nova on several of his fights,” said Ken Casey of Murphy’s Boxing. “He is one of the classiest kids in boxing with an unmatched dedication. Oh, and it doesn’t hurt that he is an amazing fighter with incredible credentials and some of the scariest power I have ever seen. We are thrilled to be co promoting Abraham.”

“It is a pleasure and an honor for me to be able to accompany a future world champion in his career,” said Alain Vanackère from 12 Round. “What an incredible opportunity to be able to live this unique experience with two esteemed promoters, GCP and Murphy’s Boxing. I think we will have a lot of success and pleasure working together.”

Cohen says he’s not sure which 130-lb champion will be targeted (WBC: Miguel Berchelt, WBA: Gervonta Davis, IBF: Tevin Farmer and WBO: Masayuki Ito), but the plan is to move swiftly.

“We will immediately begin plans to put Abraham in against rated fighters and get him up the ladder as quickly as possible,” he said. “This young man has shown every indication he is ready for the next level of boxing. It’s a very exciting time to be in the Abraham Nova business.”

Sergey Kovalev-Eleider Alvarez Rematch Coming to ESPN in Early 2019

KOVALEV VS. SHABRANSKYY OFFICIAL WEIGH-IN
Theater Lobby, Madison Square Garden

(Sept. 14, 2018) — Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev and Eleider “Storm” Alvarez lit up the Atlantic City Boardwalk in a pitched battle last month. The two will renew acquaintances early next year live on a Top Rank on ESPN card as part of a co-promotion with Main Event and Krusher Promotions, in association with Groupe Yvon Michel.

Alvarez knocked down Kovalev three times in the seventh round and scored a TKO to capture the WBO light heavyweight title in a shocking upset. Kovalev led on all three judges’ scorecards at the time of the stoppage and hopes to pick up where the first six rounds left off.

“We are very happy to be joining forces with Top Rank and ESPN for what we expect will be another exciting and historic fight,” said Kathy Duva, CEO of Main Events. “Sergey was clearly winning his first bout with Alvarez when he just got caught. It happens. Congratulations to Alvarez for his spectacular performance, but Sergey is a warrior. He let me know that he is anxious to avenge this loss as soon as possible. We are looking forward to the new year!”

“Bringing this marquee rematch to boxing fans on ESPN is a great way to start 2019,” said Top Rank President Todd duBoef. “The light heavyweight division is loaded, and both Kovalev and Alvarez have fan-friendly styles that will make for another gripping fight.”

Added Burke Magnus, ESPN Executive Vice President of Programming and Scheduling: “This has been an exciting year for boxing on ESPN, and the Kovalev-Alvarez rematch is another example of the world-class caliber of events we look forward to continue to showcase on Top Rank on ESPN in 2019.”

Kovalev (32-3-1, 28 KOs) established himself as one of this generation’s preeminent light heavyweight champions with nine title defenses across two title reigns. He first won the WBO title in August 2013, traveling to Wales and knocking out hometown champion Nathan Cleverly in the fourth round. He became the unified champion in November 2014 with a dominating 12-round decision against future Hall of Famer Bernard Hopkins and further enhanced his résumé with a pair of knockout wins against former lineal light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal. Kovalev lost the title via controversial decision loss to Andre Ward in November 2016. After dropping the rematch via eighth-round TKO, Kovalev recaptured the WBO title with a second-round TKO against Vyacheslav Shabranskyy in November of last year. He defended the title once before the first Alvarez bout.

Alvarez (24-0, 12 KOs), a former Colombian amateur standout who resides in Montreal, is a nine-year pro with a host of A-list names on his résumé, including: Kovalev, Pascal, and former super middleweight world champion Lucian Bute. The Kovalev triumph is the signature victory on his record. Come 2019, Alvarez hopes it’s repeat rather than revenge.

CECILIA BRAEKHUS PRESENTED WITH RING MAGAZINE’S FIRST WOMEN’S #1 POUND-FOR-POUND TITLE BELT

Las Vegas, NV (September 13, 2018) Undisputed Women’s Welterweight World Champion ‘The First Lady’ Cecilia Braekhus, (34-0-0, 9 KO’s) was honored on Thursday afternoon, September 13 with a presentation of THE RING Magazine’s Women’s #1 Pound-for-Pound Title Belt.

The presentation of the first belt of its kind was made by RING Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief Doug Fischer in the Media Center for the World Middleweight Championship clash between Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin.

“This is one of my biggest dreams, a dream I was never really able to believe would be true,” said Braekhus. “I remember watching Muhammed Ali with his Ring belt, and I was wondering whether a female fighter would carry his belt. I never dreamt I would be the one, and the first one.”

“I am so happy and proud, and this is one of my biggest moments in boxing. I will do my best to prove that I am the best female fighter in the world and honor this belt,” said Braekhus.

“Right now, it’s just about having fun, and enjoying myself,” she explained. “I have nothing left to prove. So, I’m trying to see how hard I can push it.” Braekhus says she’s open to moving up in weight to create new opportunities and see what’s out there. “Absolutely. That’s what it’s all about now.”

Stated Fischer, “This is an overdue belt, I don’t even want to hold it anymore,” said Fischer, as he handed the hardware to Braekhus. “Cecilia has been a vanguard in women’s boxing. This is not going to be the first Ring Championship title we award to a female fighter. She is the first because she is the most accomplished out there.”

“If you see her fight, you don’t think, oh, she’s good for a woman. She’s just amazing. She’s a vanguard, a pioneer. As a female fighter, if you have dreams of turning pro, if you dream about being an undisputed champion, you look at her,” said Fischer.

“Promoters are realizing they’re easy to work with,” said Fischer of women’s professional boxers. “They aren’t divas. They’re not asking you to break into Fort Knox. The ratings are good and they sell tickets. You’d be a fool not to (book them). It’s going to normalize it, it’s not going to be a sideshow like 20 years ago,” added Fischer.

———————————————–

On January 5, 2018, Braekhus was named by the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) as the First Female Fighter of the Year for 2017, a campaign which featured three sensational performances in her native Norway. The presentation of the award took place on Friday, May 11, 2018 in New York City at the association’s annual awards dinner.

On May 5, 2018, Braekhus was featured in the first women’s bout telecast in the storied history of HBO’s World Championship Boxing winning a 10-round decision over Kali Reis. Her victory from the iconic Stubhub Center in Carson, CA averaged an extraordinary 904,000 viewers in the live telecast on HBO.

In their inaugural member poll for the Women’s Pound-for-Pound List, the BWAA’s announced on June 26, 2018 that Braekhus was voted the #1 Pound-for-Pound Women’s Fighter in the World.

Fighting for the first time in Moscow, Russia, Braekhus won a 10-round decision over WBC Interim Junior Middleweight Champion Inna Sagaydakovskya on July 21, 2018 at the Olympic Stadium.

Braekhus has been the Undisputed Women’s Welterweight World Champion since September 2014. Trained by the renowned Johnathon Banks, she is the holder of the WBC, WBA, WBO, IBF and IBO Welterweight World Titles.

Selina Barrios Training Camp Quotes

SAN ANTONIO, TX (September 13, 2018) – Undefeated NABF Lightweight champion, Selina “Aztec Queen” Barrios (4-0, 2 KOs) is getting ready for her Corpus Christi Showdown on September 22, 2018, against Patricia Juarez (4-0), sister of WBC Bantamweight champion, Mariana “Barbie” Juarez (50-9-4, 13 KOs).

On the line will be Selina’s NABF Lightweight title. The 10-round bout will take place at Whataburger Field, home to the Corpus Christi Hooks, the double-A affiliate of the Houston Astros.

Training camp has begun and this is what Barrios has had to say:

On her recent training camp in San Antonio…

“Training camp has been very challenging but its going to be worth every minute. I feel very motivated for this camp. I truly believe I am the best in my division and for that to continue to be true, I must train harder than others, and that’s what I’m doing. I understand that Patricia Juarez is undefeated and a very tough opponent. That’s why I’m training extremely hard, because I respect her skill level. It’s going to be a great fight for the fans.

On fighting Patricia Juarez…

“Patricia Juarez is a deserving and tough challenger. I am training as though I am going to be in a tough and grueling fight that will go the distance, but my mindset like my last fight is to also go for a knockout. I am training very hard for this fight and I want the fans to know that I am not taking my opponent lightly.

On fighting in Corpus Christi on the Baseball field for the Houston Astros organization…

“It is a dream come true when you work so hard at something, in my case boxing, and a major organization lets you fight in their facility. The Houston Astros organization is a staple of the city of Corpus Christi, and the entire state of Texas for all that matter. I love fighting in Texas, its where I’m from, and it is a major honor to entertain so many people, especially those who will be in attendance at Whataburger field on September 22nd. Everyone watching my fight, is going to see something special.

On defending her NABF Lightweight title..

“The NABF lightweight title means the world to me at this point in my career, and defending it is very important. I live for people to call me ‘champ’ and to not have a belt, would mean I didn’t work hard enough to keep it. I can’t let that happen, so I am working tremendously hard to keep this belt, because not just do I want to defend it, but I also want to fight for a world title as well, which means I cannot lose the NABF strap.

On the landscape of the lightweight division…

“This is the best division in all of women’s boxing in my opinion. We have Mikaela Mayer and Katie Taylor, who I think are two very talented fighters. I also think Amanda Serrano should be considered in this division, even though she went up multiple weight classes and made history by becoming a six-division world champ. Quite simply said, I want to fight all of them and I want to prove I am the best fighter in this division. I am training and working hard so that I can be the first female fighter to make a million dollars in the ring. I’m going to be a million-dollar baby, and my fighting style will be the reason.”

This event titled “Heavyweight Boxing Showdown” is brought to you by CCC ENTERTAINMENT in conjunction with CC HOOKS, HOUSTON ASTROS, and KEEPPUNCHING ENTERTAINMENT.

Tickets priced General Admission $10, Reserved Seating $18, Premium Reserved Seating $25, VIP Seating $150 are on sale now and can be purchased online at ticktreturn.com. Doors open up at 5:30 PM, first fight is at 6:30 PM. Whataburger Field is located at 734 E Port Ave, Corpus Christi, TX 78401

“GENNADY KNOCKING OUT CANELO WILL BE A PUBLIC SERVICE TO BOXING AND THE MEXICAN BEEF INDUSTRY!” – Abel Sanchez

LAS VEGAS, NEV. (September 13, 2018) – T-Minus two days and counting until undefeated World Middleweight Champion and boxing’s superhero GENNADY “GGG” GOLOVKIN makes his 21st and division record-breaking title defense. It’s taken nearly one year but Golovkin will finally get the rematch he and the world have craved, against former two-division world champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. And what a long strange trip it’s been to get here.

“Triple G vs. Triple C is finally here,” declared Abel Sanchez, Golovkin’s trainer. “Canelo Con Carne is finally going to face the music from the man he has avoided most, Gennady Golovkin. All those months of excuses, the aiding and abetting and the enabling by Canelo’s team, will finally come to an end on Saturday night. Gennady is boxing’s longest-reigning world champion (since 2010) but I don’t think he has really been appreciated until he stood up for the sport of boxing and boxing fans after Canelo flunked two random drug tests in February. Instead of being upfront and honest about it, Canelo and his team trotted out an old wheeze about the Mexican beef industry. Instead of apologizing to Gennady, Canelo and his team continued to dress themselves in clothes made of entitlement and arrogance. No, Saturday night’s rematch isn’t about revenge, it’s about respect. It’s about Gennady defending the heritage of a great sport and the honor of that sport’s great fans. It’s about fairness, where two athletes compete on an even playing field, adhering to the rules and shining a light when others try to circumvent their own regulations. Sunshine is a great disinfectant.”

“Gennady has trained hard for this fight. He has had a different edge in this training camp and has trained with a purpose,” continued Sanchez. “To win a fight you have to try to win the fight. You win a fight by doing damage to your opponent and making it a battle. Does Gennady want to knock out Canelo on Saturday night? You betcha and it will be a public service to the sport and the Mexican beef industry he has selfishly maligned.”

LYON WOODSTOCK: “WHO HAS HE FOUGHT?”

Lyon Woodstock disapproves of Archie Sharp’s professional boxing record and questions the calibre of opponent the Londoner has faced as the war of words continue between the two.

Both fighters have traded verbal jabs between themselves all through-out the build up to their encounter in Leicester on October 6th. Woodstock (11-0) recently stated he will be a big step up in level for Sharp (13-0) and has backed up his statement by questioning the names on his professional record.

“Yeah he’s managed to stay unbeaten but who has he fought? said the WBO European super-featherweight champion.

He continued:” I look at the names on his record and all I’m thinking to myself is- yeah I would have stopped him.”

Sharp responded to Woodstock’s remarks by calling him a ‘one-dimensional’ fighter and believes his boxing abilities are ‘too cute’ for the Leicester native’s attacking style to be a problem.

“He can say stuff like he’s ‘too cute’ all he likes, I know I will make this fight my kind of fight. Once he’s in the eye of the storm, he isn’t getting out.” stated Woodstock.

“Once you take me out the freezer and put me in the oven, that’s when I come alive. I’m the kind of fighter who relishes that kind of fight, it will be the total opposite for him.

“He’s going to start getting gassed, desperately throwing shots and that is when he will leave his chin open for me. That is the exact position I will make him be in before I hit him sweetly on the chin and send him packing.”

The Time Is Now’ is headlined by Jack Catterall v Ohara Davies. Leicester’s own, Lyon Woodstock defends his WBO European Super-Featherweight title against Archie Sharp. Heavyweight prospect Daniel Dubois takes on former world title challenger Kevin Johnson. Olympian and double gold medallist Nicola Adams will be fighting Isabel Millan for the Interim WBO World Female Flyweight Title and Leicester’s British Super-Featherweight champion Sam Bowen also feature on a major night of boxing televised live on BT Sport.

Tickets are priced at £40, £60, £100, £150, £200 and are available to purchase from Eventbrite and Ticketmaster.

DANNY GONZALEZ VS. JOHNNY HERNANDERZ ROCKIN’ FIGHTS 32 UNDERCARD ANNOUNCED

New York, September 13, 2018

The 32nd edition of Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing’s “Rockin’ Fights” pits two of The Paramount’s most popular rising prospects against each other in a battle for the ABO INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE, when DANNY “EL GALLO” GONZALEZ (Woodhaven, NY 16-1-1 7KO’s) bids for his ninth win at The Paramount against, JOHNNY “HITMAN” HERNANDEZ (Huntington, NY 9-3 1KO), also seeking his ninth win in his hometown venue. Along with this much anticipated main event, Star Boxing announces an undercard of prospects with amateur accolade, that is sure to set the table for a great main event.

Returning to The Paramount almost one year to the date of his last bout at the venue, “ACTION” ANTHONY LAUREANO (East Hartford, CT 8-0 3KO’s) will take on tough Texan, MARQUIS HAWTHORNE (5-8-1 1KO). Hawthorne poses a great test for Laureano, who was honored as the 2017 New England Boxing Prospect of the Year; as a taller fighter with great reach, Laureano will look to close the distance and score on the inside. Laureano looks to continue his rise in the 140 lb. weight class with another impressive outing on September 21st.

In a battle of the pro-debut’s, JARED BONILLA (Belmore, NY Pro-Debut) will take on JOSE MAYSONET (Hartford, CT Pro-Debut) in a 4-round, super lightweight bout. Bonilla was a 2014 New York State Golden Gloves, 141 lb. novice class finalist. Over the past year, Bonilla has challenged himself by training and sparring with Star Boxing’s rising star, Tyrone “Pretty Boy” James. Maysonet, traveling from Hartford, enters his pro-debut willing to leave everything in the ring to earn his first professional win.

23 year old, ALEX VARGAS (Bellport, NY Pro-Debut) will make his pro-debut at “Rockin’ Fights 32”. In 2013, at the age of 17, Vargas found himself under the bright lights of the Barclay’s Center, where he won the New York Daily News Golden Gloves at the 165 lb. division. Vargas had this to say about is pro-debut, “I can’t wait to get in the ring and show people what I can do.” Vargas will step in with DERRON LAWSON (Philadelphia, PA 0-1) who returns to The Paramount coming off a majority decision loss at “Rockin’ Fights”. Vargas vs Lawson will be a 4-round welterweight bout.

SHAUN KENNEDY (Huntington, NY 0-0-1 ND) returns to his backyard at The Paramount to take on PEREZ AUGHTRY (Buffalo, NY Pro Debut) in a 4-round, cruiserweight scrap. After receiving a no decision in his first outing at The Paramount at “Rockin’ Fights 29”, in January, Kennedy returns with vengeance eyeing the first win of his pro career against Aughtry, who is seeking to put an end to Kennedy’s homecoming with a win of his own.

CEO JOE DEGUARDIA had this to say about the “Rockin’ Fights” undercard, “we are very excited to have added Anthony Laureano to the Rockin’ Fights undercard, as his last appearance at The Paramount demonstrated to boxing fans his exciting style and ability. Along with Laureano, we have thrilling hungry fighters on the undercard making their pro-debut’s. Alex Vargas, and Jared Bonilla have impressive amateur accolades and talent that will be on full display at “Rockin’ Fights”. Tickets are extremely limited, so be sure to get them now.”

13 September 2018 – Yangon, Myanmar: The largest global sports media property in Asian history, ONE Championship™ (ONE), has just announced the main event for ONE: PURSUIT OF GREATNESS, set for Friday, 26 October, at the Thuwunna Indoor Stadium in Yangon, Myanmar. Reigning ONE Middleweight World Champion “The Burmese Python” will defend his title against Mohammad Karaki.

Chatri Sityodtong, Chairman and CEO of ONE Championship, stated: “ONE Championship returns to Yangon this October with another blockbuster evening of world-class martial arts! Everytime we visit Yangon, it’s always a spectacle. Aung La N Sang is a two-division titleholder and an absolute phenom, beloved by his people for his immense skill in the martial arts arena, and his ability to unite everyone whenever he performs. He embodies the true values of martial arts and is a tremendous champion with a big heart. Aung La N Sang is in for another tough test, however, as Lebanon’s Mohammad Karaki is no doubt a worthy challenger to the middleweight throne. It’s going to be absolutely electric at the Thuwunna Indoor Stadium once again!”

Aung La N Sang is Myanmar’s most successful athlete in history, whose impressive submission skills has earned him the moniker of ”The Burmese Python”. Born in Myitkyina in the mountainous Kachin State, he belongs to an ethnic minority known as the Kachin. Aung La N Sang captured the ONE Middleweight World Championship with a unanimous decision victory over Vitaly Bigdash in June of 2017. In February 2018, he defeated Brazil’s Alexandre Machado to be crowned the ONE Light Heavyweight World Champion. Next up, the 33-year-old is set to defend his middleweight title against Mohammad Karaki.

Undefeated Lebanese mixed martial arts star Mohammad “O Lutador” Karaki is a 27-year-old middleweight with an unblemished professional record of 9-0. The Phoenix Middleweight Champion, Karaki is considered one of the greatest mixed martial artists from the middle east. He also formerly held the Desert Force light heavyweight and middleweight titles. Of his nine victories, only one bout reached the final bell. With five submissions and three captivating knockouts to his name, Karaki is a feared finisher who is expected to bring the firepower when he meets “The Burmese Python” Aung La N Sang for the ONE Middleweight World Championship.

Below is what the fighters and their teams had to say at today’s final press conference:

CANELO ALVAREZ, LINEAL MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION:
“Thank you everyone for being here. I’m ready and prepared to be in the ring soon Sept. 15. If you have known m throughout my career you know I don’t like to talk I like to show it in the ring. Thank you to my fans and this fight is for Mexico.”

GENNADY “GGG” GOLOVKIN, WBC/WBA/IBO MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION:
“September 15 is a huge date. This is the biggest day for boxing fans. I’m very happy. I feel healthy. Thank you to God who gave me the biggest chance to be here. Thank you to the teams. Thank you to all the fans.”

ERIC GOMEZ, PRESIDENT OF GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS:
“We are now just three short days away from seeing something for a second time that unfortunately rarely happens in our sport – the two best guys in a division facing each other in the primes of their career. And this time, there is real bad blood between these two guys. Canelo has personally told me he wants to knock GGG out. GGG hasn’t been shy about expressing his thoughts about Canelo.

“And, this has just come in: Tickets for Canelo vs. GGG 2 are officially SOLD OUT. So, the only way now to catch this historic rematch in Las Vegas is by watching the closed circuit telecast at MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay, The Mirage or Luxor.”

TOM LOEFFLER OF GGG PROMOTIONS:
“What a long and winding road we took to get here today for this historic rematch. Luckily for the fans and the sport of boxing with one concession we were able to get this fight done. You have to give both these fighters credit. A lot of people were demanding to see this rematch and here we are. This transcends the sport of boxing and sports in general. It has become an international event, broadcast in 160 countries. It’s like the World Cup with its international fan base. If GGG is successful, he’s up against the legendary Bernard Hopkin’s historic middleweight title defense record.”

EDDY REYNOSO, HEAD TRAINER FOR CANELO ALVAREZ:
“The date is here, we have made a great preparation to show it in the ring. Thank you to all the media here today.”

JOSE “CHEPO” REYNOSO, MANAGER AND CO-TRAINER OF CANELO ALVAREZ:
“Much has been said outside the ring but the truth will arrive this Saturday. Words aren’t needed and we expect a great fight. When you remember great fights, you will remember Canelo vs. GGG 2. We hope that in the ring it exceeds what was said outside of the ring.”

ABEL SANCHEZ, TRAINER TO GENNADY GOLOVKIN:
“Thank you to Canelo and GGG teams for making this fight a reality. In order to take his belt, you’re gonna have to fight him. Lets hop we get the kind of fight the other side has promised on Sept. 15.”

BERNARD HOPKINS,
FUTURE HALL OF FAMER AND GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS PARTNER:
“For Canelo and GGG to be on the stage at this time in middleweight history, they get to take it to the next level. I wish one guy to be the winner and that’s Canelo. Come Sept 15 I think a lot of people will be surprised for how this fight will turn out.”

TONY WALKER, VICE PRESIDENT OF PROGRAMMING, HBO PAY-PER-VIEW:
“This is undoubtedly the biggest boxing match of the year. Everyone involved would not stop until the fight was made. This is a mega fight in every sense of the word. Since the fight a year ago, it stayed in the public consciousness and was water cooler talk. Everyone continued to talk about it because it is the biggest to happen in the sport.”

BOB BENNETT, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF NEVADA STATE ATHLETIC COMMISSION:
“Thank you to Golden Boy Promotions and GGG promotions for bringing this fight to the Fight Capital of the World. Without the fighters, we wouldn’t be here today.”

MAURICIO SULAIMAN, PRESIDENT OF THE WORLD BOXING COUNCIL:
“This fight represents the best fight of the year and the century. These camps understand the need to give the fans the best fight and to do it again after the bell rang last year on Sept 16. I’m very proud of our champion Gennady Golovkin who has been a great representative of the sport and I’m very proud of Canelo who has also always been a great representative of the sport. I am sure Chepo, Eddy and Abel have prepared their fighters to give the best fight on Saturday.”

Jose Ramirez: The Homecoming is Here

FRESNO, Calif. (Sept. 12, 2018) – There was mutual respect rather than trash talk at the final press conference on Wednesday for Jose Ramirez’s WBC super lightweight title defense against Antonio Orozco, Friday at the Save Mart Center (ESPN, 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PST) in Fresno, Calif.

More than 14,000 fans are expected to watch Ramirez, from nearby Avenal, defend his world title for the first time against the unbeaten Orozco.

In the co-main event, United States Marine Corps veteran Jamel Herring (17-2, 10 KOs) will take on John Vincent Moralde (20-1, 10 KOs) for the vacant USBA junior lightweight title. And, in a special televised attraction, 18-year-old sensation Gabriel Flores Jr. (9-0, 5 KOs) will face off against Roger Gutierrez in a six-round lightweight bout.

Herring, who served two tours of duty in Iraq, received the Battles Won Award at the press conference. The award, presented by Maj. Ted Driscoll, was given to Herring for his courage, commitment, and excellence on the battlefield and in the boxing ring.

Here is what the fighters had to say.

Jose Ramirez

“It’s definitely a dream come true to come home as a world champion, to be able to deliver world championship fights and be part of world championship fights here in Central California. I’m very happy to be able to bring this type of entertainment to this area, to the fans that deserve it.”

On new trainer Robert Garcia

“It’s been great. I’ve known Robert since my amateur career. He’s followed my career since the amateurs. He’s seen a lot of good things in me, a lot of positive things in me since the amateurs. Now that I’m able to train with him, he’s very excited and motivated to train me. I hope to continue to impress a world class trainer like Robert Garcia, to push ourselves to the limits.”

“Antonio is a very active fighter in the ring. He’s a pressure fighter like myself, and I’m more than excited to be facing fighters like him. I consider Antonio to be one of the very best in the division.”

Antonio Orozco

“I’m ready. That’s as clean as it can get. This is the opportunity that every fighter wants to get to, and mine came at the right moment. Things happen for a reason. I’m here in Fresno in front of a great champion. I’m ready. That’s all I can tell you.”

“Fresno is great. It’s hot. And I think it’s going to get hotter inside the ring. The person in front of me is going to be Jose Ramirez, and he’s the only objective at the moment.”

Jamel Herring

“It’s an honor to be out here in Fresno. Rick {Mirigian} and Top Rank have done a great job. We all know I’m from Long Island, New York, but my presence here makes me feel like I’m back home, especially with my Marine Corps family that I got to see yesterday. It was a great honor.”

“I’m just ready to go. I’m excited. I’ve had a great training camp. I’m in there with ‘Bud’ Crawford, one of the best fighters in the world. We’ve actually done a lot of sparring together.”

“Being a Marine, I feel like I have a lot to prove. I carry myself as a Marine, even though I haven’t been active duty since 2012. Once a Marine, always a Marine. ESPN and the people of Fresno are going to get a great show.”

John Vincent Moralde

“I would like to invite all Filipinos here in Fresno to come and watch and support the fight.”

Gabriel Flores Jr.

“I’m not a fully grown man, but I’m fighting fully grown men. I gotta look the part. Fighting on ESPN is going to be great, my first time. I’m going to make the best of the opportunity. There’s going to be a lot of kids back home watching me and seeing me on the big stage back in Stockton, California. I’m from Stockton. I had the odds against me, and now I’m here. They now know they can do something with their lives, just like I did with mine.”

“I expect hundreds of people {from Stockton} to come. It’s the big talk around town. I show up to local events back home. They talk to me, take pictures, and I appreciate the love they give me. Why should they tune in? They should tune in because, like they said, I’m the future. I’m going to do great Friday night. I feel good.”

The back-to-back programs will begin at 8 p.m. ET/PT with CRADLE OF CHAMPIONS airing before the live ShoBox telecast at 9:45 p.m. ET/PT from Firelake Arena in Shawnee, Okla.

Wilkins, of New York City, has five wins and five knockouts since turning professional two years ago following an accomplished amateur run. CRADLE OF CHAMPIONS documents one of the pinnacle moments of his amateur career as the Staten Island native fights through the 10-week tournament in hopes of establishing himself as an elite amateur prospect. Having already won the New York Golden Gloves in 2013 at 123 pounds, CRADLE OF CHAMPIONS chronicles Wilkins’ journey as a 19-year-old competing in the 132-pound class and culminates with a dramatic 2015 championship bout.

“I’m honored to be a part of CRADLE OF CHAMPIONS,” the 22-year-old Wilkins said. “Fighting in the Golden Gloves was a life-changing experience for me and it’s a great feeling to know that boxing fans can watch the documentary on SHOWTIME and then watch my ShoBox debut right after.”

“They call me ‘Crunchtime’ and that’s what I’m bringing to ShoBox on September 21. I’ll be ripping and running and I look forward to putting on a spectacular performance against Misael Lopez.”

Wilkins, who counts former four-division champion Roy Jones Jr. and former two-division champion Paulie Malignaggi as mentors, fought his way to the 2016 Olympic Trails in what was his last amateur tournament. His professional debut came in June of 2016 when he defeated Jack Grady via second-round knockout in a super lightweight contest.

In Friday’s main event, undefeated super featherweight prospect Jon Fernandez (16-0, 14 KOs) will clash with O’Shaquie Foster (13-2, 8 KOs) in a 10-round super featherweight bout. In the eight-round co-featured bouts, Irvin Gonzalez Jr. (10-0, 9 KOs) meets Carlos Ramos (9-0, 6 KOs) in a featherweight matchup, and Wesley Ferrer (12-0-1, 7 KOs) will face Steven Ortiz (8-0, 3 KOs) in a battle of lightweights.

Presented by DiBella Entertainment, tickets for the event are priced at $60 for ringside, $40 for floor seats and $30 for general admission and can be purchased in advance.

THE THIRD FIGHT IS ON! CHUCK LIDDELL TO BATTLE TITO ORTIZ IN FINAL CHAPTER OF HISTORIC RIVALRY

LOS ANGELES (Sept. 12, 2018): The final chapter of most historic rivalry in mixed martial arts history will take place as Chuck Liddell (30-8, 20 KOs) takes on Tito Ortiz (19-12-1, 8 KOs) in a three-round main event on Saturday, Nov. 24 at the “Fabulous” Forum in Inglewood, California. The fight will be presented live on Pay-Per-View beginning at 6:00 p.m. PT/9:00 p.m. ET.

Liddell was a former kickboxer who became a veritable legend in the sport of MMA. Liddell defended the UFC Light Heavyweight crown four times against the likes of Tito Ortiz, Randy Couture and Jeremy Horn. Liddell, who also has victories against Alistair Overeem and Wanderlei Silva, will return to the cage after eight years to fulfill what he says is his fans’ biggest desire.

“I’ve already knocked him out twice,” said Chuck Liddell. “I’m doing this for my fans because this is the one fight they all keep asking me for, and they want to see him knocked out. Tito is a punk, but I also want to inspire people and show them that the only limitations we have are the ones we put on ourselves. For me, it’s a fight to right some wrongs from the past and to renew my strength and discipline. My focus is laser sharp, and I can’t wait to see blood! Tito is going down! I’m thrilled to be partnered with Golden Boy Promotions for this event because they understand the sacrifice that we fighters make to entertain the world. Together we are going to bring the biggest event in MMA history. November 24, you better be watching!”

Known worldwide as the “Huntington Beach Bad Boy,” Ortiz became one of the first stars of mix martial arts and has faced the likes of Ken Shamrock, Forrest Griffin, Wanderlei Silva, Vitor Belfort and Ryan Bader. Ortiz held the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship for three years and is considered one of the most important figures the sport has ever had. Ortiz will return after first-round submission victory against Chael Sonnen in January 2017 and will look to return to Inglewood, Calif. to finish a rivalry what was started several years ago.

“It’s extremely important that I finish this the way I want to,” said Tito Ortiz. “Liddell was my friend. He says he’s not my friend, well great. We’re enemies, and that’s just the way it is. Now it’s time for fans to buy this pay-per-view to watch one of the best fights of my career. Chuck will come in thinking he can knock me out. He’ll come in swinging for the fences, but I’ll knock his ass out. Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions has stepped up to give fans what they want after 25 years of mixed martial arts. To be a partner in such a big promotion has always been my dream.”

“This event will be huge for sports fans around the world,” said Oscar De La Hoya, CEO and Chairman of Golden Boy Promotions. “Liddell and Ortiz are two of the most recognized fighters in mixed martial arts history. They are legends in the sport. Everyone remembers that their rivalry helped put the sport on the map, and we’re excited to host the next and final chapter of this historic rivalry.”

The undercard of this event will be fully stacked with competitive mixed martial arts bouts. Details will be announced shortly.

Liddell vs. Ortiz 3 is a three-round light heavyweight fight presented by Golden Boy Promotions. The fights will take place on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2018 at the ‘Fabulous’ Forum in Inglewood, Calif. The fight will be presented live on Pay-Per-View beginning at 6:00 p.m. PT/9:00 p.m. ET.

OHARA DAVIES: “PEOPLE SEEM TO HAVE FORGOTTEN I ACTUALLY KNOW HOW TO FIGHT”

Ohara Davies has issued a gentle reminder that his boxing ability will be doing all the talking, instead of his mouth, in his eagerly anticipated domestic showdown with Chorley fighter Jack Catterall on October 6th.

Verbal outbursts have been a regular occurrence by Davies (18-1) in the past, but the super lightweight has reiterated his intentions to keep things civil with Catterall (22-0) and has so far kept to his word.

“A lot of people seem to think I got here to the big stage because I talk trash. Yes, I know how to draw a crowd and I don’t care about getting booed.

“I’ve been quite controversial in the past and people seem to have forgotten I actually know how to fight. My record is good but everyone’s overlooking my successes since the one loss I took.

Davies previously fought at Elland Road on the undercard of Josh Warrington’s world title triumph against Lee Selby back in May where he impressively knocked out Paul Kamanga with a single punch in the second round of their contest.

“Hopefully, the knockout of Paul Kamanga put back in everyone’s minds that I’m a boxer, not a talker. I’m a fighter, not a clown.

“Another misconception is that all I have is my big right hand. I catch people with that shot because I’ve tactically worked out how to do so. Look at my Derry Mathews fight or any of the others – I have other tools and weapons.

“Against Kamanga, I knew the right hand was the shot that would work but I’m a technical boxer. A lot of people might not see that or think it, but I believe I am.”

BOWEN WARNS RIVALS: I’LL BE THE LAST MAN STANDING

SAM BOWEN is ready to show Zelfa Barrett, Archie Sharp and Lyon Woodstock who the main man is.

The British super-featherweight champion recently joined the trio in Frank Warren’s stable when he signed a promotional deal with the Hall of Fame promoter.

Bowen (13-0) is in action on Warren’s show at Leicester’s Morningside Arena on Saturday October 6, on a bill where Sharp and Woodstock face each other.

“To be honest I have watched very little of those three lads, but I believe in my abilities and I will beat all three of them,” said 26-year-old Bowen.

Many envisage a mouthwatering series of fights between the four, which Bowen welcomes and added: “They are all at a similar level.

“When Zelfa got beaten by Ronnie Clark that opened a few eyes up.

“He was obviously boxing lads, stopping them and looked amazing. When he moved up he got found out a little bit. He was shocked himself.

“People think I should know Lyon because we live near each other in Leicestershire, but the first time I ever come across him was when we met at the London press conference announcing the October show.

“I heard that Archie was a very good amateur and has a good background, but that doesn’t win you pro fights. Doing it over three rounds is different to 12 rounds.”

LAS VEGAS (Sept. 11, 2018) – Lineal Middleweight World Champion Canelo Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) and WBC/WBA/IBO Middleweight Champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (38-0-1, 34 KOs) made their grand arrivals today at the MGM Grand Resort and Casino in Las Vegas ahead of their highly anticipated rematch on Sept. 15 at T-Mobile Arena, produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View® beginning at the special time of 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT.

Below is what the fighters had to say at today’s grand arrivals:

CANELO ALVAREZ, LINEAL MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION:
“I’m bothered by all the stupid things they’ve been saying. I don’t know which one to laugh about or get angry about at this point. But their statements are all excuses for the loss they will take this Saturday. I have been using all of these statements as motivation for my fight on Saturday. I know that it can be dangerous to go in the ring with a hot head, but I have experience. I know how to use this anger in the ring intelligently. I’m happy for all the support the fans give me, and I will give them a great fight this Saturday.”

GENNADY “GGG” GOLOVKIN, WBC/WBA/IBO MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION:
“Mexican Independence Day is a huge day for boxing and boxing fans. I am a professional. I am not nervous but I am very excited to be able to defend my titles on a major Mexican national holiday for the third consecutive time. My Mexican fans like true fighters and true heroes. This may be a rematch but it is a different story, a better story, a bigger story. This fight is the biggest level for me, 100%. I am healthy and strong. I had my best training camp. I have the fight I want against the fighter I want and on the biggest stage. Why shouldn’t I be happy? If Canelo gives me a chance and fights like he claims he will, I will knock him out. It is time for the Big Drama Show.”

JAIME MUNGUIA, WBO JUNIOR MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION:
“I’m very happy for the support that I’m getting from the fans. I feel they are drawn to me because of my style of fighting and because they know I like to give a great show to the fans. Right now, it’s just about maintaining weight and preparing for the weigh-in. I know Cook is tough and difficult fighter, but you’re going to see a more relaxed and concentrated Jaime Munguia this Saturday.”

BRANDON “BAD BOY” COOK, JUNIOR MIDDLEWEIGHT CONTENDER:
“It’s a dream come true for me. Two fights had gotten cancelled. This is a huge opportunity for my team. I didn’t come here to get paid, I came here to fight. Munguia’s tough. I was running this morning, and I saw him running, so I know he’s preparing well. This is one of the toughest challenges of my life. I can’t thank Golden Boy enough. This is it, and I can’t wait.I know he’s ready, I’m ready. I’m going to be his toughest opponent to date.”

DAVID LEMIEUX, FORMER MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION
“I’m excited for Saturday night. I promise you some fireworks. I hope everyone enjoys the show. He has a big mouth. He likes to talk garbage on social media. He’s not the best kind of guy. I’m going to knock him out and make a lot of people happy. I’m at 100% right now. You’re going to see David Lemieux who is at his best this Saturday.”

GARY “SPIKE” O’SULLIVAN, MIDDLEWEIGHT CONTENDER
“It means a great deal for me. It took me eight years to get here. I’m more ready than I’ve ever been before. He’s going to be cooked. He’s very one dimensional. He does the same thing over and over again. He says the same stuff over and over again. I’m going to teach him a lesson on Saturday night. I’m a very hard worker, I’ve been a hard worker my whole life. I fight like a Mexican.Watch out David, you’re getting knocked out.”

ROMAN “CHOCOLATITO” GONZALEZ, FORMER FOUR-DIVISION WORLD CHAMPION
“I thank God for this opportunity. This is exactly what I have been praying for. I’m ready to make my comeback against this tough opponent. I will show the world I can still be a world champion.”

Fresno Media Workout Notes & Quotes: Jose Ramirez Set For Hometown Title Defense

FRESNO, Calif. (Sept. 11, 2018) – The time is finally here for Jose Ramirez, who will make the first defense of his WBC super lightweight world title against top contender Antonio Orozco on Friday at the Save Mart Center. Ramirez (22-0, 16 KOs) was supposed to defend his title at the Save Mart Center on July 7, but the bout was canceled when Danny O’Connor was hospitalized for dehydration before the weigh-in. Orozco (27-0, 17 KOs) represents his toughest test to date.

In the co-feature, United States Marine Corps veteran Jamel Herring (17-2, 10 KOs) will take on John Vincent Moralde (20-1, 10 KOs) for the vacant USBA junior lightweight title. And, in a special feature, 18-year-old phenom Gabriel Flores Jr. (9-0, 5 KOs) will face Roger Gutierrez (7-1-1, 4 KOs) in a six-round lightweight bout.

In other action: Fresno native Isidro Ochoa (5-0, 1 KO) will fight Elio De Jesus in a six-round featherweight bout, top super bantamweight prospect Santos Ortega (2-0, 1 KO) returns in a four-rounder, 140-pound contender Hiroki Okada (17-0, 12 KOs) will face Cristian Coria (27-6-2, 11 KOs) in a 10-rounder, Alexander Besputin (10-0, 8 KOs) will battle Alan Sanchez (20-3-1, 10 KOs) for the vacant USBA welterweight title, and former two-time interim world champion Bryan Vasquez (37-3, 20 KOs) makes his return against Carlos Cardenas (21-14-1, 13 KOs) in a lightweight bout.

Ramirez-Orozco, Herring-Moralde, and Flores-Gutierrez will be televised live on ESPN and ESPN Deportes at 10 p.m. ET, with the entire undercard to be streamed at 6:30 p.m. ET on ESPN+— the recently-launched multi-sport, direct-to-consumer subscription streaming service from The Walt Disney Company’s Direct-to-Consumer & International segment in conjunction with ESPN.

On Tuesday at Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino, Ramirez and many of the fighters from Friday’s card worked out for the media. This is what they had to say.

Jose Ramirez

On the fight

“This is going to be a great fight. We are both very hungry. He’s 27-0 and has been waiting for an opportunity like this, to fight for the WBC title. That pushes me even harder. This has been one of my longest camps, and the results will show in the ring.”

On working with new trainer Robert Garcia

“This camp gave me more room to know Robert Garcia and more time for him to get to know me as a fighter. Sparring {with} the fighters at the {Robert Garcia Boxing Academy} has made me a more prepared Jose Ramirez. I sparred all different types of styles, which helped get me ready for a tough guy in Orozco. I pushed myself more. I feel like I got my confidence at the Robert Garcia Boxing Academy. I feel like I’m at home now.”

On July 7 Danny O’Connor defense being canceled after O’Connor missed weight

“After that happened, I took my family out to Maui (Hawaii). In Maui, I was out there running and enjoying the fresh air, getting my frustrations out. It’s frustrating when you get ready for a fight and then it falls through. There was a lot of disappointment coming from my fans, but they understand that it wasn’t my fault, that it was more my opponent not doing things correctly. At the end of the day, everything happens for a reason. I have a much better opponent to make my first title defense. I think it’s going to be a good fight for the boxing fans, for the Hispanics and the Mexicans that really like action fights. Specifically for them, I think they are going to be pleased to watch it on a big boxing weekend.”

Antonio Orozco

On facing Ramirez

“He’s aggressive. I feel like he has a very fan-friendly style. He has a style that brings out fighters to fight. It’s what we like.”

On entering hostile territory in Fresno

“I’m fighting Jose Ramirez. I’m not fighting the fans or Fresno. That’s beside the point. I’m focused on Jose Ramirez and the fight. Everything else is just ambient noise.”

On his weight struggles

“Earlier in the year, I left for Guadalajara, Mexico, and I just have a different view of things. I met a nutritionist down there and made 140 in March. I’m on the same regimen. What happened before, there are things that people don’t know. Besides the point, I’m over that. It’s done and over with. But, hey, I’m not worried about it. I got bigger things to worry about, and that’s what my focus is on. I’ve had my downs and I’ve had my ups, and this is an opportunity I’m not going to let go.”

Jamel Herring

On fighting as ESPN co-feature

“I’m just excited to fight alongside Jose, who is my good friend and Olympic teammate. I’ll be fighting in front of 14,000 screaming fans on the ESPN flagship station. I’m honored. I’m excited. I can’t wait to get in there.”

On Moralde

“I respect him. He’s here for a reason. I have fought a stronger pedigree of fighters. I saw his last two fights. I see he has issues with stamina at times. He looked good in his last fight {against Ismail Muwendo}, but I’m not Muwendo.”

Gabriel Flores Jr.

“I’ve been waiting my turn to fight on ESPN, and my time is now. This is for the kids in Stockton who look up to me. I want to inspire the kids in my community.”

John Vincent Moralde

“This is a big opportunity for me. A win here will put my name in the conversation for bigger fights.”

“Herring is good and strong, but there is nothing extraordinary about him. It’s not like he’s Lomachenko.”

Isidro Ochoa

“It means a lot to fight at home. I’m a better fighter, and I am ready to perform for the hometown fans.”

On training with Robert Garcia

“I’ve picked up a lot of new strategies. It was a great six-week camp. I feel like we’re going to take this guy out early. No hesitation.”

World Renowned Swimsuit Model turned pro boxer Avril Mathie to fight on Fire Fist Boxing’s “Night of Champions” Card October 6

Tampa, FL (September 11, 2018) – Undefeated bantamweight and famed swimsuit model Avril Mathie will face Samantha Salazar Fire Fist Boxing’s “Night of Champions” card Saturday, October 6 at the St. Petersburg Coliseum in St. Petersburg, FL.

Originally from Australia and now fighting out of Miami, FL at the Famous 5th Street Gym, Mathie is a globally recognized swimsuit model. She won Miss Hawaiian Tropic Australia in 2012, the 2014 Miss Swimsuit USA International as well as the 2015 Las Vegas International Model Search. Mathie however is more than just a pretty face.

The 31-year-old Mathie had 20 amateur boxing matches between her native Australia and the US. During her amateur career, Mathie regularly fought more experienced opponents and did so in a number of different weight classes while still winning most of her fights.

Mathie turned pro this past February and her record stands at 2-0 with both victories coming via first round KO’s. Her next opponent however is a significant step up in competition.

Born and raised in Dallas, TX, Salazar has a 5-5-1 record and is riding a three-fight win streak. She’s faced stiff competition including bouts against former Olympian Marlen Esparza, highly-touted Rosalinda Rodriguez and Casey Morton, all of whom are undefeated.

“I’ve watched some footage on her,” Mathie said of Salazar. “She’s a decent fighter but I’ve seen weaknesses that I intend to exploit.”

Mathie-Salazar is scheduled for six rounds and is for the ABF bantamweight title.

“We are proud to have Avril and also St. Petersburg’s very own Noemi Bosques fighting on October 6,” said Jody Caliguire of Fire Fist Boxing Promotions. “This is going to be an excellent night of boxing and I expect both women to shine.”

An 11 fight card, “Night of Champions” is headlined by a ten round bout featuring 135 pound contender Willian
“Babyface” Silva against Jose Forero for the ABF lightweight title.

All fights and fighters are sanctioned by the Florida State Athletic Commission and subject to change.

Following an impressive combat sports career that spans two and a half decades, including successful runs in DREAM, Cage Rage and Bellator, Manhoef began promoting fights under his WFL banner in 2015. Most recently, Manhoef defeated Remy Bonjasky in the final bout of his kickboxing career at WFL 16.

Similar to renowned K-1 events, the kickboxing tournament on Sept. 22 commences with eight competitors who will need to claim victory three times in one evening to become champion. The “Final 8” Grand Prix kicks off with several explosive first-round heavyweight matchups, including Murat Aygun vs. Fabio Kwasi, Sam Tevette vs. Clyde Brunswijk, Andrei Stoica vs. “Boy Boy” Martin and Fred Sikking vs. Nordine Mahieddine. Sikking vs. Nordine replaces the previously announced contest between Ibrahim El Bouni and Levi Rigters.

In the MMA Lightweight Tournament Finale on Sept. 23, Pieter Buist (13-4) meets Soli Abdeselam Mohamed (4-3), better known to fans as “Sully Bull,” in a battle to determine the victor at 155 pounds. Buist, nicknamed “The Archangel,” is currently riding a four-fight win streak, including two WFL victories, while Bull has also won his previous two bouts inside the WFL cage.

In addition to the “Super 8” Grand Prix on Sept. 22, the card will also feature Bellator Kickboxing’s Jorina Baars (44-0-3) in a highly anticipated superfight with two-time WFL World Champion Anissa Haddaoui (42-3-1). Fighting out of Den Helder, Netherlands, the 29-year-old Baars remains one of the most dangerous kickboxers and Muay Thai fighters on the planet, famously defeating Cris Cyborg in 2014. Having earned gold in both professional kickboxing and Muay Thai, the Dutch-born Haddaoui looks to make a name for herself against a fellow veteran in Baars. Fans can expect fireworks between these two exciting and elite fighters.

OHARA DAVIES ‘READY TO GO TO HELL’ AGAINST CATTERALL

Ohara Davies has stated he is ‘ready to go to hell’ against Jack Catterall and followed up by questioning his opponent’s willingness to join him when the domestic rivals face each other in Leicester on October 6th.

Davies (18-1) posted on his Twitter account in response to Hall of Fame promoter Frank Warren’s announcement of a multi-year broadcast partnership with ESPN and Top Rank Boxing this afternoon.

The tweet read: “You guys in America can watch me win on October 6th live on @espn – I will win this fight And I’m ready to go to Hell, though I don’t think Jack Catterall will take me there, we will all see. Great partnership and great for Boxing as a whole @frankwarren_tv.”

Verbal outbursts have been a regular feature coming from the Ohara Davies twitter account in the past, but the Hackney super-lightweight promised to keep things civil during the build up to his encounter against Chorley-fighter Catterall (22-0). Catterall on the other hand hasn’t been as lenient towards his compatriot, most recently labelling Davies a quitter.

Reformed, reenergized Briggs ready to fulfill his dream

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Sept. 11th, 2018) — Promising super lightweight prospect Nicholas Briggs will make his long-awaited professional boxing debut Friday night at Twin River Casino Hotel at the age of 19.

That’s not the unusual part. What sets Briggs apart from others is the road he took to get here, an unconventional path littered with poor choices, broken promises and a remarkable turnaround to keep him on the right track toward beginning the next great fighter to emerge from the famed city of Worcester.

Briggs faces fellow newcomer Jacob Wright of Decatur, Ala., on Sept. 14th, 2018, a little more than a year since the end of his second stint behind bars stemming from gun and drug charges in 2017.

As a teenager, Briggs wandered from the confines of the boxing gym and ran into trouble with the law — trouble he blames only on himself — before realizing he was dangerously close to wasting his God-given talent as a fighter. That same weekend he returned home, Briggs was back in the gym, slowly working his way back into shape, and now he’s less than a week away from completing the ultimate comeback.

His inner circle is much smaller these days, but Briggs is happy, healthy and content with a new lease on life. At 19, he has his whole career ahead of him despite the fact he hasn’t actually fought since 2014. With a new trainer and the region’s No. 1 promoter in his corner, sky’s the limit for one of Worcester’s most decorated amateurs.

Briggs’ four-round super lightweight bout against Wright is one of nine on a stacked fight card promoted by CES Boxing, which signed Briggs to a multi-year promotional agreement earlier this summer.

“Nobody is going to support my dream the way I have to because it’s my dream,” Briggs said. “What happened in the past, that’s my past. My past built character. That’s who I was, but this is who I am.”

Backed by his late father, Briggs began boxing at the age of 7 and rose through the amateur ranks under the guidance of legendary Worcester trainer Carlos Garcia, working side-by-side with fellow CES Boxing stablemate Jamaine Ortiz. He won a Ringside Tournament in 2011 and advanced to the finals of the Junior Olympics Regionals three years in a row from 2012 to 2014.

Home life, he says, was “great.” He grew up with both parents and five siblings (two older sisters, an older brother and a younger brother), but things changed when his father passed away in 2012, just two months before the first of his three consecutive appearances in the Junior Olympics.

“He was like the foundation of the family and he always made sure me and my brother were in school, he always made sure me and my brother were in the gym until nighttime. Every single day, sometimes training twice a day,” Briggs recalled. “We had a gym in our garage.

“After he passed away, everyone was devastated. I started doing my own thing, trying to be in the gym, hanging with my friends. I stopped going to the gym for a couple months.”

Only 13 at the time, Briggs got caught up in an entirely different lifestyle outside of the gym, lured by those he now knows never truly had his best interests in mind. Still, he kept winning in the ring, racking up amateur accolades and advancing to the Junior Olympic finals again in 2013 and 2014.

The third loss hit him particularly hard. He felt he had won the fight. That, he says, is when things unraveled. Several months later, at 15 years old, he got caught up in an armed robbery and spent nearly two years locked up. He even remembers the exact dates.

“July 4, 2014 until Feb. 17, 2016,” Briggs said.

Upon returning home the first time, Briggs tried to clean up his act, but again wound up in trouble, this time arrested on gun, drug and assault charged after pulling a firearm on a man at a gas station in Worcester. The second stint cost Briggs another six months behind bars, which is when he finally realized he needed to wake up or wind up like everyone else in his predicament.

“I ended up thinking, ‘Wow, I’m just like everyone else and I don’t want to be like everyone else,'” Briggs said. “I didn’t want to be like everyone else sitting in jail for life or dead, or a dope fiend asking people for money in the street. I didn’t want that life. Boxing is my real, God-given talent, so that’s what I’m going to pursue. It’s going to get me somewhere.”

After returning home late last year, Briggs reunited with trainer Jose Santos of 401 Boxing, who had actually worked his corner at the 2014 Junior Olympics. The two had a great rapport and Briggs trusted Santos’ wisdom. Shortly thereafter, Santos brought Briggs to CES Boxing president Jimmy Burchfield Sr., who became enamored with Briggs’ potential.

Briggs has grown tremendously in just under a year. He now lives in Rhode Island and trains full-time with Santos. He’s also learned to accept his past for what it is. He doesn’t point the finger at anyone else but himself for the choices he made, but realizes everything that happened is what makes him the man he is today.

“Everybody has choices,” Briggs said. “I made my own choices and ended up getting into trouble.”

These days, Briggs keeps to himself. The circle is much smaller than it used to be. You won’t find him out on the town late at night or surrounding himself with large groups of people. If you’re looking for him, check the gym. It’s practically become his permanent residence as he prepares for Friday’s debut. He hasn’t missed a day yet.

“I just like to be around myself and train. I like to surround myself with positive people,” he said. “I don’t really want to hang around that type of environment, the streets, stuff like that. I just stay with people who uplift me. Back then, I was with a whole bunch of people who brought me down.”

Win or lose, Briggs has already accomplished so much just by turning his life around and leaving behind the empty promises of street life that seem to lure so many teenagers down the wrong path. He understands many want him to succeed, but some may want to see him fail. He can’t control that. All he can control is what he does when that bill rings Friday night.

“There are a lot of up-and-coming fighters from Worcester. It’s hard to support when a lot of people don’t want to see you do well,” he said. “A lot of the people who come from the same place you did are just stuck and they don’t want to support because they see that they’re still stuck in that place.

“A lot of people don’t like to show love. I don’t understand why. It is what it is. I’m going to show love regardless.”

Even though he’s still only 19, there’s an unspoken pressure on Briggs to prove all that amateur success was simply the foreword to what may become one of boxing’s greatest success stories. Not everyone makes it, but don’t bet against Briggs. Even fewer have made it this far.

“I’ve let too many things slip out of my hands.” Briggs said. “I can’t let this one slip out of my hands.”

Tickets for Friday’s event start at $47 and are available online at www.cesboxing.com, www.twinriver.com, www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 401-723-2253 or at the Twin River Casino Hotel Players Club. All fights and fighters subject to change.

The main even features an eight-round title fight between reigning Universal Boxing Federation (UBF) All America Super Lightweight Champion Nick DeLomba (13-2, 3 KOs) of Cranston, R.I., and challenger Chris Singleton (18-5-2, 8 KOs) of Baton Rouge, La.

Sept. 14thalso features the return of unbeaten prospects Anthony Marsella Jr. (9-0, 4 KOs) of Providence and Pawtucket, R.I., featherweight Ricky Delossantos (5-0, 1 KO). Marsella Jr. faces Maine’s Brandon Berry (13-3-2, 8 KOs) in a six-round super lightweight showcase while Delossantos steps up in a six-round bout to face the dangerous Jose Ortiz (3-3-2, 1 KO) of Jersey City, N.J.

Also in the featherweight division, Providence’s Phil Dudley (1-1) returns to face unbeaten Ranse Andino (1-0) of Worcester and Fall River, Mass., super lightweight Kris Jacobs makes his professional debut in a four-round bout against the entertaining Andy Aiello (1-1) of Bridgewater, Mass.

CES Boxing will also introduce four of its highly-touted prospects on the 14th, starting with 6-foot-8 Nigerian heavyweight Raphael Akpejiori, a former college football and basketball for the University of Miami now trained by two-time world champion Glen Johnson. Akpejiori faces Texas veteran Omar Acosta (1-1, 1 KO) in a four-round bout.

Female lightweight sensation Shayna Foppiano (1-0, 1 KO) of Everett, Mass., makes her Twin River against Sarah Click (0-1) of Buzzard’s Bay, also fighting for CES Boxing for the first time after stepping into the cage with CES MMA in 2017. Junior middleweights Victor Reynoso of Providence and Maurilio Alava of Ecuador make their professional debuts against one another in a four-round bout and also debuting is Fall River, Mass., junior welterweight Kris Jacobs, who battles Andy Aiello (1-1) of nearby Bridgewater.

MOLINA’S MANAGER, LEE HOLLIDAY, WORKING ON EARLY RELEASE FOR ERIC MOLINA IN HOPES OF FIGHTING DAVID PRICE IN UNITED KINGDOM

Deerfield Beach, FL (September 10, 2018)—Heavyweight contender Eric Molina’s manager, Lee Holliday, is working with the British Board of Boxing in hopes of getting Molina an early release from his suspension.

Molina was given a two-year suspension by the British Boxing Board for an illegal substance discovered in post-fight testing following his loss to Anthony Joshua in England on Dec. 10, 2016.

“I’m hopeful that the British Boxing Board will consider allowing Molina an early release on his suspension,” said Holliday. “It is coming up on two years since the Joshua fight. I know David Price is looking for an opponent in England. If we are fortunate to get the release, Molina would be happy to fight Price.”

The British Board of Boxing found a banned substance and Molina thought it was part of the B12 supplement he was taking.

Molina is 26-5 with 19 KOs and Price is 22-5 with 18 KOs.
