Abraham and Nielsen meet in crunch Super Middleweight clash

Former two-time World Champion Arthur Abraham (46-6, 30 KOs) will meet Denmark’s Patrick Nielsen (29-2, 14 KOs) in a make or break Super Middleweight showdown on April 28 at the Baden Arena in Offenburg, Germany.

Abraham returns to the ring having dropped a points decision to Chris Eubank Jr. in an IBO World title contest on July 15 at The SSE Arena, Wembley, while Nielsen is back in action after a knockout loss to John Ryder at the same London venue on October 14.

Following these defeats, both men are now eager to re-establish their World title credentials in this crunch Super Middleweight clash.

Having consulted his long-term coach and mentor, Abraham, the former IBF Middleweight and WBO Super Middleweight World Champion, says he is ready to get back on the World title trail in an attempt to reclaim his 168 lbs crown.

“After my last fight, I spoke to my coach Ulli Wegner and he helped me reach a decision,” said ‘King Arthur’. “I am not ready to retire! There is still more I want to achieve in boxing, and most of all I want to become World Champion again.

“I’m looking forward to fighting Patrick Nielsen, and putting on a good performance for my fans. I know Patrick is a good boxer. This will be a good test for me and a chance to prove I’m ready to challenge for World titles again.”

Nielsen, the former WBC Silver Middleweight and WBA International Super Middleweight Champion, says he is looking forward to facing Abraham in Offenburg, and having learnt a lesson from the Ryder loss, believes he has what it takes to defeat the German boxing icon and get his career back on track.

“I can’t wait for this fight,” said the 26 year-old from Albertslund. “My last fight really put things into perspective. I have made some changes in my training and my personal life, and now, I’m 100% focused on boxing. People will see the real Patrick Nielsen on April 28.

“Abraham is still a big name in boxing and a very tough guy. If I can beat him, it shows I can beat a lot of the top guys, and hopefully that will lead to bigger fights. I believe I can beat him. I’ve got age and speed on my side, and I’m ready to do whatever it takes to win.”

Having started his professional career in Germany, Nielsen says he has no concerns leaving Denmark to meet Abraham in his home country. “Germany is like a second home to me,” he said. “I used to fight there when I started so I can’t wait to get back there again.”

Promoter Nisse Sauerland has highlighted the importance of this fight for both men. “This is a fight neither man can afford to lose,” said Sauerland. “Both men want to get back into World title contention – but only one can come out on top! The winner can be challenging for World titles, while the loser will have a long road back. There is a lot on the line and that guarantees excitement. Fans can look forward to a great night of action in Offenburg.”

Tickets for Arthur Abraham vs. Patrick Nielsen on April 28 in Offenburg will go on sale tomorrow and are available online via www.evetim.de or calling 01806-570044.

DANNY O’CONNOR DEFENDS HIS WBC TITLE IN A GUTSY PERFORMANCE AGAINST TOUGH CANADIAN STEVE CLAGGETT AT THE HOUSE OF BLUES BOSTON

Boston, Massachusetts, March 18, 2018-After coming off a of a great KO win, earning the vacant WBC Silver Intercontinental Title against rising Queens prospect and previously undefeated, DANNY GONZALEZ, (then, 14-0 5KO’s) at STAR BOXING’S Slugfest at the Sun, at Mohegan Sun Arena, in November, DANNY O’CONNOR (now, 30-3, 11KO’s) put his title on the line at the against an extremely tough Canadian in STEVE CLAGGETT (now, 26-5-1, 17 KO’s).

Claggett came into last nights title bout, just off of a hard fought win against previously unbeaten, and fellow highly touted Canadian prospect, YVES ULYSSE JR. (then, 14-0 9KO’s).

O’Connor vs. Claggett was seen live on PPV, and was the main event bout of a great night of boxing on St. Patricks day, from the House of Blues Boston.

For the opening two rounds, O’Connor and Claggett maintained a fast, competitive pace, with give and take action by both fighters. However, in the third round, O’Connor began to find his rhythm, landing strong combinations while alluding the attempted offense of Claggett.

O’Connor continued to use his combinations to score, while keeping his foot on the outside of Claggett, dodging most attempts the Canadian threw. However, in the seventh round, Claggett threw a perfect counter right, that sent O’Connor to the canvas. O’Connor managed to shake off the knockdown, got his legs under him, and finished the final two rounds strong, earning a unanimous decision vicory, and successfully defending his WBC belt.

Promoter JOE DEGUARDIA had this to say about O’Connor’s strong outing, “Danny O’Connor showed true guts, putting his title on the line against a very tough fighter in Steve Claggett. Danny used his skill and more importantly, great resilience, getting up from a late round knockdown to defend his title. This was a very solid victory for Danny against a tough opponent, and we look forward to what is to come.”

O’Connor vs. Claggett was promoted by Murphy’s Boxing and Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing.

PENNINGTON EDGES MARTINEZ IN A THRILLER

Last night, Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing presented the 30th edition of the popular “Rockin Fights” series at the Paramount in Huntington, NY, and number 30 will go down as one of the most memorable events in the recent history of club shows.

From top to bottom every fight had the enthusiastic crowd on their feet and produced fireworks all night.
The main event 8 round Jr. Middleweight contest saw the streaking Courtney Pennington of Brooklyn, NY, pull off his 4th consecutive upset as he squeaked out a unanimous decision over the Bronx’s Steven Martinez in an absolutely savage fight that could easily be a fight of the year candidate for fights on this level.

The two warriors went at it from the opening to the closing bell bringing the fans to a frenzy as they stood toe to toe for the last 30 seconds of round 8. There was little to separate from the 2 combatants and in the end it was Pennington who won by scores of 77-75 on two cards, and 78-74 on the third. Pennington improves to 12-3-2 5KO’s while Martinez drops to 18-4 13 KO’s.

Equally as exciting was the 6 round Jr. Lightweight match between Puerto Rico’s Angel Suarez (7-2 3KO) and Elmont, NY native Titus Williams (7-2 2KO). The action was fast and furious throughout. Suarez dropped Williams with a straight right hand in round 1 but Williams fought himself back into the round by landing hard shots of his own. The fighters stood toe to toe for almost the entire fight as both took turns landing vicious punches. Suarez pulled off the upset as he walked away with a unanimous decision.

Danny Gonzalez (15-1-1 6KO Woodhaven, NY) bounced back nicely from his last fight, a shocking TKO loss at the hands of Danny O’Connor, stopping the very tough Juan Rodriguez (8-8-1 7KO Haymarket, VA) in the 5th of a scheduled 8 round Jr. Welterweight fight. Keeping with the pattern of the evening the two fighters stood toe to toe for much of the fight with both landing hard shots. The 5th and final round saw Gonzalez hurt Rodriguez with a left right combination and finish him off with a flurry of punches forcing referee Tony Chiarantano to bring a halt to the action against the game Rodriquez.

Valerio Nocera, (4-1-1 Roma, IT) won a hard fought 6 round decision over Alexander Picot ( 2-5-1 Hartford, CT) in a Lightweight fight.

Johnathan Arroyo (3-0 1KO Brentwood, NY) survived a 4th round knockdown to win a majority 4 round decision over debuting Derron Lawson (0-1 Philadelphia, PA) in a Welterweight fight.

Promoter Joe DeGuardia had these thoughts on the evening “These fights reminded me of the golden age of boxing when club shows flourished throughout the state of NY. These were really great, fan-friendly fights and much respect to all 10 warriors who fought their hearts out and put it all on the line out there tonight”. Added Matchmaker Ron Katz “Pennington-Martinez was the closest thing I’ve seen to the legendary battle I put together many years ago between Merqui Sosa and Prince Charles Williams, and Suarez-Williams wasn’t far behind”.

The next scheduled date at the Paramount is set for Friday, June 8th.

KEMAHL RUSSELL DROPS, STOPS MICHI MUNOZ IN JAMAICA

Kingston, Jamaica (Friday, March 16, 2018) – In the first event of a boxing series being presented by Uprising Promotions, Evander Holyfield’s Real Deal Boxing and Wray & Nephew Rum, A Real Deal Uprising in Jamaica was headlined on Friday by Junior NABF middleweight champion Kemahl “Hitman” Russell (13-1, 11 KOs), who dismantled crafty veteran Michi Munoz (26-8, 18 KOs) in the second round of the night’s feature bout.

Before the main event pairing at the National Arena in Kingston, Jamaica, Russell had a short piece of advice for his hometown supporters.

“Don’t blink.”

In the first frame of the contest, Russell utilized his range early while working behind the jab and walking Munoz down. Late in the opening round, he started laying the foundation of some good body work in case the fight traveled into deep waters, but that would not be the case.

After some back-and-forth action in the opening minute of the second frame, Russell started changing levels and pounding on Munoz as he backpedaled to the ropes. Russell then unleashed a sharp uppercut that snapped back the head of his opponent, following it up with a brutal body shot before pummeling Munoz with a two-piece that dropped him.

Munoz returned to his feet after tasting the canvas, but Russell would not let him off the hook as the Jamaican power-puncher immediately jumped on him and provided no time to recover. After unloading a flurry that touched the body and head with both hands, Russell saw Munoz quickly return to the canvas shortly after the first knockdown. This time, he would be unable to recover, and the referee was forced to wave off the fight.

The official time of the stoppage came at 2:05 of the second round.

“I have power in both hands,” Russell said after the knockout victory. “I had a long training camp and a successful one. I could not have prepared any better in this training camp.”

The rising star of Russell has been on a steady trajectory since winning Wray & Nephew’s Contender Boxing Series in 2015, and Uprising Promotions President Ronson Frank feels he is the perfect candidate to headline the new Jamaican boxing series that his promotion is launching alongside Evander Holyfield’s Real Deal Boxing.

“Evander and I are scouting for talent, and we are looking for fighters we can develop into homegrown champions,” Frank stated. “Our goal is to develop Jamaican boxers. We are starting from the ground up to establish a foundation, and we are looking to get these guys the training they need to compete against the top contenders in boxing.”

An accidental headbutt caused the cut on Esparza that forced the fight to be halted at :19 of the fourth round.

“I’m happy to have made my Golden Boy Promotions debut,” said Blair Cobbs. “But it was unfortunate that the fight ended in a technical draw. I felt I was winning the fight and wanted to close out strong. All I can do now is be ready for the next fight and give the fans a great performance.”

Falcao excited for Massachusetts debut; ready to put on a show

Plant City, FL (March 16, 2018) – World rated middleweight Yamaguchi Falcao returns to the ring Saturday, March 31 against rugged Colombian Richard “La Lamina” Gutierrez in an eight round contest at the Marina Bay Sportsplex in Quincy, MA.

Born and raised in Brazil but now fighting out of Plant City, FL under head trainer Jose Rodriguez, Falcao captured a Bronze Meadal at the London Olympics in 2012. The 30-year-old standout has been flawless thus far as a pro, compiling a 14-0 record with 7 victories by knockout. On May 5, 2017, Falcao impressively outpointed previously unbeaten Morgan Fitch (18-0-1) over ten rounds. Currently rated #13 by the World Boxing Council, Falcao meets one of the craftiest veterans in the 160 pound division.

A Miami based Colombian, Gutierrez is a 51 fight veteran. He’s faced a number of top fighters including Joshua Clottey, Alredo Angulo, Luis Carlos Abregu, Zaurbek Baysangurov, Yudel Johnson, Jonathan Gonzalez, Vanes Martirosyan and Gilberto Ramirez among others. At 30-17-2 with 19 KO’s, Gutierrez has only been stopped three times and is a former WBC Latino titlist. In his most recent bout, he held unbeaten Marcos Osorio to a draw in his native Puerto Rico.

“Gutierrez is a very tough, experienced, crafty and game fighter,” said Jody Calaguire of Team Falcao. “Yama has been looking great in camp and is ready to win impressively.”

The 31st also marks Falcao’s first fight in Massachusetts, which has one of the largest Brazilian populations in the United States. While nothing is quite like fighting at home, Falcao’s hoping the Brazilian community comes out in large numbers to support him.

“The Brazilian people are extremely important to me. I have fought six times in Brazil and my Olympic Bronze was for everybody in the country. Knowing there’s many Brazilians in the Boston area where the fight is taking place further inspires me to put on a great performance. I hope to see many Brazilian flags and meet new supporters on the 31st.”

The card is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Murphy’s Boxing and will air on ESPN2. Tickets are available at Murphysboxing.com.

Stephon Young: ‘Team Gaballo Not Thinking Enough About What’s Going to Happen to Him’

Perennial 118-lb contender Stephon “Showstopper” Young is finishing up his 13-week training camp in Miami while wondering if his opponent knows what he’s truly in for next week.

On Friday, March 23, in the Hard Rock Event Center at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla., WBA #4-rated Young (17-0-3, 7 KOs) from St. Louis will face WBA #5 Reymart “GenSan Assassin” Gaballo (18-0, 16 KOs) from General Santos City, Philippines, in a 12-round battle for the WBA Interim World Bantamweight Championship.

Young vs. Gaballo headlines promoter Kris Lawrence and The Heavyweight Factory’s “Rumble at the Rock,” an 11-bout night of world-class professional boxing. In the 10-round co-main, former WBA Super World Bantamweight Champion Juan Carlos Payano (19-1, 9 KOs) takes on “Magic” Mike Plania (14-0, 7 KOs) from General Santos City, Philippines.

Tickets are priced at $255, $130, $80 and $55. All seats are reserved and available at all Ticketmaster outlets, online at www.myhrl.com, www.ticketmaster.com or charge by phone: 1-800-745-3000. Additional fees may apply.

29-year-old southpaw Young says that while Gaballo obviously has some strength to have such a high KO percentage, he is too green to be in the ring with a fighter at his level and experience.

“To be honest, I take nothing from him, but they should have stepped him up with a different opponent first and not thrown him in with a guy like me,” said Young. “I feel he’s not ready yet and that will show next Friday. He should have had two or three more fights, but I feel like just because it’s for a title, they are rushing toward it. It’s a good opportunity for him, but they’re not thinking enough about what’s going to happen to him. I will be bringing everything I’ve got that night.”

Young, who still lives in St. Louis but travels to Miami for camp, says coming up the hard way in boxing and then meeting up with his current team will make all the difference next Friday.

“When I turned pro, I didn’t get signed right off the bat with a big-time promoter,” he said. “I went and fought in people’s backyards and proved myself. I was given nothing, but I knew my time would come. I stayed focused and continued to train. I’ve been with my coach, Herman Caicedo, now for two years and I’m a totally different fighter. I want to thank my team, my promoter Kris Lawrence and The Heavyweight Factory for giving me this opportunity, my manager Henry Rivalta for always believing in me and my coach Herman Caicedo for getting me in the best shape I’ve ever been.”

For Young, lifting the belt over his head next Friday will be a dream come true.

“Winning this fight means everything. It’s a big accomplishment and nothing can keep me from my dreams. On March 23, I will be champion.”

FROM BROOKLYN TO DEADWOOD TO SAN ANTONIO, DIBELLA ENTERTAINMENT ENJOYS SENSATIONAL BACK-TO-BACK WEEKENDS

Brooklyn, NY (March 15, 2018) DiBella Entertainment is coming off highly successful back-to-back weekends, from promoting the heavyweight championship of the world between Deontay Wilder and Luis Ortiz, to getting top-rated contenders Regis Prograis, Ivan Baranchyk, and Richard Commey in line for world title shots, as well as seeing several prospects continue to rise up the rankings with impressive victories.

“It has been a tremendous past two weekends for DiBella Entertainment,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “The boxing world witnessed Deontay Wilder show the heart of a true champion to secure his signature victory at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Women’s boxing crowned a new champion in Alicia Napoleon and saw the emergence of a new exciting attraction in the New York area. At the Deadwood Mountain Grand, in South Dakota, super lightweight Regis Prograis won a share of what will be his 140-pound WBC green belt and established himself as one of the sport’s rising superstars. With his new trainer Pedro Diaz, Ivan Baranchyk fought the best fight of his career and became the mandatory challenger for Mikey Garcia. In San Antonio, lightweight Richard Commey gave himself a great birthday present with a sensational knockout to earn the mandatory versus Robert Easter.”

On Saturday, March 3, DiBella Entertainment promoted the WBC Heavyweight World Championship between champion Deontay Wilder (40-0, 39 KOs) and previously undefeated challenger Luis Ortiz (28-1, 24 KOs). In the highly anticipated bout before a crowd of 14,069–the second largest boxing crowd at Barclays Center–two of the best heavyweights in the world engaged in a phenomenal battle with Wilder overcoming serious adversity to notch his seventh WBC title defense by stopping the hard-hitting Cuban in the 10th round.

Alicia Napoleon (9-1, 5 KOs), of Lindenhurst, Long Island, NY, was featured on the Wilder-Ortiz undercard and won the WBA Women’s Super Middleweight World Title, displaying her championship class by defeating Femke Hermans (6-1, 3 KOs) via 10-round unanimous decision. After winning 11 amateur titles, including two New York Golden Gloves titles and a National Golden Gloves title, Napoleon turned pro in August 2014. Having won her world title in front of a large cheering section at Barclays Center, it is clear that Napoleon has established herself as a new female boxing star attraction in New York.

Trained by Joe Higgins, Freeport, NY’s junior middleweight contender Patrick Day (15-2-1, 6 KOs) made the first defense of his WBC Continental Americas Title on the undercard, winning a unanimous decision against Kyrone Davis (13-2, 5 KOs). Going into the bout, both Day and Davis had stellar amateur pedigrees, with Day a New York Golden Gloves champion and US Olympic alternate and Davis a two-time National champion. Day won his belt in front of local fans at Long Island’s NYCB Live last July, earning a thrilling unanimous decision against previously unbeaten Eric Walker.

DiBella then traveled to the Deadwood Mountain Grand in Deadwood, South Dakota, for a sensational six-bout card on Friday, March 9, that had the capacity crowd on their feet throughout. Hitting all three local TV stations and four different radio outlets in nearby Rapid City before Thursday’s weigh-in, DiBella became an instant celebrity in the area and was surrounded by well-wishing boxing fans on the night of the event.

Headlining the “SHOWTIME Boxing: Special Edition” telecast, Regis “Rougarou” Prograis (21-0, 18 KOs) put himself on the world stage with a stunning second-round stoppage of former unified champion Julius Indongo (22-2-1, 11 KOs) to capture the interim WBC Super Lightweight Title. The contest made history as it was the first world title fight ever staged in South Dakota. As the interim WBC titleholder at 140 pounds, Prograis will meet the winner of Saturday’s clash in New York between Jose Ramirez and Amir Imam for the WBC belt. Prograis will be watching intently from ringside at Madison Square Garden, eager to take on the winner and become the first world champion from New Orleans since Willie Pastrano, more than 50 years ago.

With his new trainer, Pedro Diaz, Belarus-born, Brooklyn-based junior welterweight Ivan “The Beast” Baranchyk (17-0, 11 KOs) participated in the evening’s co-featured bout, enamoring fans in attendance with his most impressive performance yet. Known for his all-action style and last seen on SHOWTIME in a war against Abel Ramos, in one of the best fights in the history of the “ShoBox: The New Generation” series, Baranchyk dismantled the game former world title challenger Petr Petrov (38-6-2, 19 KOs) over seven rounds, dropping him three times en route to a stoppage victory. It was his fifth appearance on SHOWTIME. The win earned Baranchyk, co-promoted by DiBella Entertainment, Fight Promotions Inc., and Holden Productions, and managed by David McWater’s Split-T Management, the #2 ranking at 140 pounds by the IBF, and put him in line for a shot at newly-crowned champion Mikey Garcia.

New Zealand heavyweight prospect Junior Fa (14-0, 8 KOs) opened up the SHOWTIME telecast, staying unbeaten with an eight-round decision win versus Craig Lewis (14-2-1, 8 KOs). It was the third fight Stateside and second appearance on SHOWTIME for Fa, who holds two amateur wins over WBO Heavyweight Champion Joseph Parker, as he works his way up the rankings and into title contention.

Once ranked the #2 featherweight in the world, Hartford, Connecticut’s Matt “Sharp Shooter” Remillard (27-1, 15 KOs) earned the fourth victory of his comeback against Jesus Valdez (22-4-1, 11 KOs) to seize the WBC USNBC super featherweight title. Trained by Connecticut Boxing Hall of Famer Paul Cichon, Remilard resumed his career in April 2017 following a six-year ring absence. Prior to his lone defeat to Mikey Garcia in March 2011, Remillard had accumulated the WBC USNBC, NABF and NABO titles at 126 pounds. He is now ready to prove himself against the 130-pound division’s elite and top-rated fighters.

Cleveland’s Charles Conwell (7-0, 5 KOs), a 2016 US Olympian and rising junior middleweight star, has kept a busy and impressive start to his career since turning pro last April. On the Prograis-Indongo undercard, the 20-year-old earned a six-round unanimous decision against the experienced Juan Jesus Rivera (28-20, 18 KOs). It was last November when Conwell made his television debut on SHOWTIME’s “ShoBox” series. A highly accomplished amateur, having amassed a 132-14 record, Conwell is co-promoted by DiBella Entertainment and Holden Productions, and is managed by David McWater’s Split-T Management.

Resuming his career following an injury-induced 14-month layoff, Tulsa, Oklahoma’s heavyweight prospect Trey Lippe Morrison (14-0, 14 KOs), son of former heavyweight world champion Tommy Morrison, kept his perfect knockout percentage intact with a third-round stoppage of Oswaldo Ortega.

The following night, on Saturday, March 10, Ghanaian Richard Commey (26-2, 23 KOs), trained by Andre Rozier and Gary Stark Sr. in Brooklyn, NY, handed Alejandro Luna (22-1, 15 KOs) his first defeat with a blistering sixth-round knockout, in an IBF lightweight elimination bout from the Freeman Coliseum, in San Antonio, TX. He is now the mandatory challenger to champion Robert Easter, setting up a rematch of what was a hotly-contested battle in September 2016.

RYDER AND COX CLASH ON BELLEW-HAYE BILL

John Ryder and Jamie Cox will clash in a crunch Super-Middleweight battle at The O2 in London on May 5, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

Ryder is back in action following his brilliant win over Patrick Nielsen in October inside five rounds, a win that saw ‘The Gorilla’ take the Dane’s number four ranking in the WBA and leap into contention for major title shots.

Cox will be gunning to rob Ryder of that chance and take it for himself as he returns to the ring after challenging George Groves for the WBA World title at the top of the bill that Ryder landed his big win – and both men expect fireworks in a fight that ‘opens doors’ to the winner.

“We’ve been out of the ring the same amount of time, so I’m sure Jamie is just as itching to get back in there as me,” said Ryder. “It’s been a long time coming following my career best win so I’m happy to get back in there in another big fight in my home town.

“There was talk of other fights that we were looking at, but they didn’t come off – that’s boxing. It was about picking the right fight rather than just going in there against anyone. Jamie has a good record and to beat him would hold me in good stead.

“A lot of people were writing me off before the Nielsen fight, I went in there and beat the man that was held in high regard and I beat him in good fashion. It was the best win of my career so far. The pressure was off. I was an away fighter, I just went in there and enjoyed it which was telling on the night. It was a great victory.

“Jamie had some success in the early rounds against George. He made it the fight it was but we all know how good Groves is. It only takes one shot… Just look at both my fight and his fight on the same card. Luckily my punch went to my advantage and he was on the receiving end of a peach.

“He got hit with a body shot, 9 times out of 10 you’ll take them but that one was in the wrong place at the wrong time for him and he couldn’t beat the count.

“I think our styles are geared up for a good fight, it’ll be a real treat for the fans on what’s shaping up to be a quality night of boxing.

“The British Title has evaded me for so long now, it’s a love hate relationship. I’d love to win it but I can’t build my career around the British Title. I’m taking things one fight at a time,

Jamie Cox is my full focus.

“For the winner it opens a lot of doors, the loser it could be curtains potentially. It’s a must win fight for the both of us.”

“I’m looking forward to this one,” said Cox. “Facing Groves was a great experience, I know where I went wrong and I’m ready to prove where I believe I should be.

“I had a couple of weeks off after the last fight then it was time to get back stuck into training. I’m fully back into it now and ready for the next one.

“John put on a great display against Nielsen, it was a grand finish so hats off. Obviously, I didn’t see it at the time but I’ve seen it back since. Fair play to him, he got a big win.

“I’ve always been quite tough to the body. Groves wasn’t hurting me to the head, so I didn’t think he could hurt me to the body. To be fair he landed a great shot, full credit to him. I think George will go on and win the final against Callum Smith.

“John comes across a gentleman. It’s business at the end of the day. I know what he’s about, I’m expecting the best John Ryder. I’m looking forward to mixing it with him. Beating him will put me in a better position and nearer to a World Title shot.

“He’s ranked across a couple of the governing bodies and it’s my goal to become a World Champion. Beating John will open more doors, especially with the tournament finishing soon. It should free up some of the fighters. This fight has come at the perfect time.

“It’s going to be a tough task, he likes to come forward and have a go and I’m always up for the fight. There will be some big shots landed, it’s a great fight for the fans. I’m looking forward to breaking it down the gym with the team and the build up to the fight itself.”

Ryder and Cox clash on a huge night of action in Greenwich as bitter Heavyweight rivals Tony Bellew and David Haye meet in a rematch and Martin J. Ward defends his European Super-Featherweight title against James Tennyson.

Laurén lands IBO World title fight against undefeated Kaiser

Mikaela Laurén (29-5, 13 KOs) will face Verena Kaiser (10-0, 5 KOs) for the IBO Female World Super Welterweight title on April 21 in Sundsvall, Sweden.

‘The Nordic Queen’ returns to action following her sixth-round TKO loss to unified welterweight champion Cecilia Brækhus, and is straight back into World title contention against the undefeated 24 year-old Kaiser.

“I’m really excited about this fight,” said the 42 year-old from Stockholm. “It means everything to me to be back fighting for a World title. I know I’m up against a really tough opponent so I will need to be at my best to win.”

Laurén returns to her natural weight, where she remains undefeated, having moved down to 147lbs to challenge Brækhus, and the Stockholm fighter is eager to prove she is still number one in the division.

“This is my chance to show I’m still the best in the world in my weight class,” she says. “I’m still undefeated at super welterweight and I plan on staying that way.

“I know my opponent is a lot younger than me. She is undefeated, she’s hungry and she has nothing to lose. I’ve watched some of her fights so I know she’s got good technique and she’s strong so it’s not going to be an easy fight, but I want to be the one that breaks her zero. I really want this to be 10-1 for her.”

Despite coming off a defeat, Laurén has taken heart from her performance against Brækhus, and believes it shows, that while she is increasing in years, she is also still improving as a fighter.

“I was having one of my best fights ever against Cecilia before I got knocked down,” she says. “I hit her with some really good shots and I was really satisfied with my boxing until I got caught with a big hook in the fourth-round, and I struggled to come back from that.

“Obviously, I was disappointed with the result but I was pleased with my performance, and I think I showed that although I’m 42, I’m still getting better.”

Kaiser, from Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, Germany, is one of the most exciting up and coming fighters in the division. In her last contest she defeated Diana Garcia to claim the GBU and WIBF Female World titles, and has now set her sights on Laurén.

“This is a really interesting fight, which means a lot to me,” says Kaiser. “World title fights are always something special and I’m really looking forward to performing on this big stage and especially in front of the Swedish public.

“Of course, I am confident. That is the reason I fight. I will give everything to bring the belt back to Germany and to keep my undefeated record intact.”

Laurén made global news when kissing Brækhus prior to their fight in October, but Kaiser says she is prepared should Laurén attempt any of her pre-fight intimidation tactics.

“If she kisses me maybe I should just kiss her back for her satisfaction,” she says. “In any case, I’ll have the right answers for Mikaela, inside and outside of the ring.”

Laurén meets Kaiser for the IBO Female World Super Welterweight title as chief support for the European Union Heavyweight title fight between Swedish rivals Otto Wallin and Adrian Granat on April 21 at the Gärdehov in Sundsvall.

ANGELA LEE AND MEI YAMAGUCHI TO BATTLE FOR ONE WOMEN’S ATOMWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP AT ONE: UNSTOPPABLE DREAMS

15 March 2018 – Singapore: The largest global sports media property in Asian history, ONE Championship™ (ONE), recently held a worldwide media conference call for ONE: UNSTOPPABLE DREAMS, featuring reigning ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion “Unstoppable” Angela Lee of Singapore and challenger, Japanese martial arts veteran Mei “V.V” Yamaguchi of Tokyo, Japan. Also on the call was Chairman and CEO of ONE Championship, Chatri Sityodtong.

Ticket information for ONE: UNSTOPPABLE DREAMS is available at www.onefc.com.

Angela Lee, ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion, stated: “With the help and support of my family, we got through (the accident) together. And I feel thankful for everything. I am so excited to be back in action. I’ve missed everything that comes along with competition — the training and preparation, and of course, getting right back in the cage. I think fans are going to see a great matchup. I just want to go in there, do what I love, and the results will show.”

Mei Yamaguchi, ONE World Title Challenger, stated: “I am super focused on this match. It’s going to be a tough challenge for me, facing the champion. But I am confident in my abilities and I working hard to give my best performance. I’ve been training a lot, especially in jiu-jitsu. I’m now a black belt, so I think I’m improving a lot. At the same time, I have a new kickboxing coach, so we’re working very hard. I hope I can showcase some of those new skills.”

21-year-old “Unstoppable” Angela Lee of Singapore is considered one of ONE Championship’s most outstanding athletes. She captured the inaugural ONE Women’s Atomweight World Championship with an awe-inspiring victory over Mei Yamaguchi in 2016, and has since then defended the title successfully on two occasions. Lee’s beautiful combination of elite striking and grappling has proven to be a potent formula for success, as she has remained unbeaten in her career. In the most recent bout of an impressive run, Lee dominated top contender Istela Nunes, showcasing her wide array of skills despite suffering from illness. She is widely-considered on a global scale to be one of the biggest names actively competing in the sport. She is set to defend her title next against Mei Yamaguchi in a rematch at ONE: UNSTOPPABLE DREAMS.

35-year-old Japanese martial arts veteran Mei “V.V” Yamaguchi is a female atomweight standout and a former ONE world title challenger from Tokyo. She is the DEEP Jewels Featherweight Champion, and owns seven submissions and two knockouts in her 28-bout professional career. In 2016, Yamaguchi challenged Angela Lee for the inaugural ONE Women’s Atomweight World Championship in an epic showdown that would later win multiple ‘Bout of the Year’ honors from international media publications. In her last bout, Yamaguchi thoroughly defeated Gina Iniong of the Philippines to win impressively by unanimous decision after three rounds. Yamaguchi is now set to take on champion Angela Lee in a highly-anticipated rematch.

Jamal James Returns to Hometown to Battle Abel Ramos in Welterweight Clash Headlining Premier Boxing Champions on FS1 & FOX Deportes from the Armory in Minneapolis on Friday, April 13

MINNEAPOLIS (March 14, 2018) – Welterweight contender Jamal James will get a chance to fight in front of his hometown crowd when he takes on Abel Ramos in a 10-round welterweight battle that headlines a huge night of action on Premier Boxing Champions on FS1 and FOX Deportes Friday, April 13 from the Armory in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

In the co-main event, rugged veteran Edner Cherry battles rising lightweight Dennis Galarza in a 10-round bout. The action continues with Austin Dulay and Chris Colbert clashing in an eight-round match between unbeaten super featherweight prospects that kicks off the broadcast at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT. Also appearing on the card is sensational 17-year-old 154-pound prospect Joey Spencer (1-0, 1 KO), a former No. 1 ranked amateur and nine-time national champion.

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by Warriors Boxing and TGB Promotions, go on sale Friday, March 16 and will be available by visiting www.ArmoryMN.com.

The April 13 event marks the return of boxing to the Minneapolis Armory, a historic venue that hosted nearly 100 cards between 1915 and 1973, including a show headlined by all-time great Sugar Ray Robinson in 1942.

“Warriors Boxing is thrilled that PBC, FS1 and FOX Deportes are bringing professional boxing back to Minneapolis on Friday, April 13,” said Leon Margules, President of Warriors Boxing. “There couldn’t be a more fitting venue than the newly renovated, historic Minnesota Armory in downtown Minneapolis. The Armory has a rich boxing tradition and has not hosted a boxing event for 45 years. It will be a great night for the highly acclaimed PBC on FS1 and FOX Deportes series in this beautiful and historic building.”

“Jamal James has staked his position as a rising contender in the welterweight division and has the kind of fan-friendly style that fits perfectly in the talent-rich 147-pound class,” said Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions. “Ramos doesn’t back down and will certainly test Jamal in front of his hometown crowd. Dennis Galarza will face his own challenge when he goes up against the tough veteran Edner Cherry and it’s a rare treat to see two young unbeaten prospects like Dulay and Colbert squaring off this early in their careers. All the fights have a significant bearing on the future of the boxers involved and that will work out well for the fans.”

James (22-1, 10 KOs) is coming off the biggest victory of his career – a knockout over tough veteran Diego Chaves on Dec. 15. The 29-year-old James joined unified 147-pound champion Keith Thurman as the only boxer to have knocked out the durable Argentine. It was James second straight victory since suffering the only loss of his career – a unanimous decision defeat to Yordenis Ugas on Aug. 12, 2016. James hasn’t fought in his hometown of Minneapolis since he scored a unanimous decision over Mohammed Kayongo in 2013.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to compete on this platform and to show the nation and the world that Minnesota has great fighters and an enthusiastic fan base for boxing,” said James. “Abel Ramos is a tough guy who will come to fight, but coming off the big win over Chaves, I’m in a position in my career where I’m trying to reach that world championship level. I have to continue to demonstrate the ability to perform under pressure in difficult fights. I know he’s coming to pull off an upset, but that’s not happening.”

Ramos (18-2-2, 13 KOs) will complete his move to the welterweight division by taking on James after making his welterweight debut with a stoppage of Emmanuel Robles last July. The 26-year-old out of Arizona has won three of his last four fights and his only pro defeats have come at the hands of top 140-pound contenders Regis Prograis and Ivan Baranchyk.

“I’m a real Mexican warrior and I never back down from a fight,” said Ramos. “I’m not worried about going into Jamal James hometown and fighting him there. I’m going to disappoint Jamal and all his fans in Minneapolis, because I’m coming to win.”

Cherry (36-7-2, 19 KOs) has defeated once-beaten contenders Haskell Rhodes and Omar Douglas since losing a split decision to Jose Pedraza in a 130-pound world title match in 2015. The 35-year-old Cherry of Wauchula, Florida has previously challenged Tim Bradley and Paulie Malignaggi during his career that included a 10-fight win streak after the Bradley bout.

“Dennis Galarza is a great, young fighter who is on the rise, coming to win and looking to become a world champion, but he is in for a real fight,” said Cherry. “I’m not taking this fight lightly, I’m getting ready, and I’m ready to go all out on April 13. After this, I hope I’ll get my third opportunity at a world title. I took the Lydell Rhodes, Omar Douglas and Jose Pedraza fights because I’m a warrior who wants the opportunity to fight the best, and, ultimately, to fight for a world title. The Pedraza fight didn’t go my way on the scorecards, but the whole world knows the true outcome of that fight. I went back to work and I’m ready to prove it again.”

Galarza (16-2, 9 KOs), an outstanding amateur boxer, is stepping up in competition with this matchup against the more experienced Cherry. The 25-year-old Galarza, who’s from Brooklyn but trains in Orlando, has won three straight fights since losing a split decision to Cesar Alan Valenzuela on Sept. 16, 2016.

“My eyes have been on Edner as a friend and as a fan since I was young, but this is business and I’m going to be ready,” said Galarza. “Edner is a true warrior who never lets up and a crafty veteran who has fought a lot of great competition. The Pedraza fight I thought he possibly did win. A lot of people duck Edner Cherry because he beat top guys in Rhodes and Douglas his past two fights, plus he can punch with power. People think Edner’s going to break me down, but I took the fight that nobody wants to take. I believe in my talents and I’m ready to make my mark. This fight will demonstrate the type of fighter that I am.”

It is rare to see a match between two young prospects on the rise this early in their careers, but Dulay and Colbert are both eager for that challenge. Dulay (11-0, 8 KOs) was busy last year, fighting four times with only one fight going the distance. The 22-year-old southpaw from Nashville, Tennessee most recently scored a TKO victory over Carlos Padilla last August.

Colbert (7-0, 2 KOs) has one of the most decorated amateur careers in New York City as he fights out of the renowned Atlas Cops and Kids Gym in Brooklyn. The 21-year-old is noted for his blazing hand and foot speed and he enters this fight coming off a unanimous decision victory over previously unbeaten Titus Williams last November.

IRISH SENSATION MICHAEL CONLAN BACK ON BOXNATION AS HE DOES BATTLE ON JOSE RAMIREZ V AMIR IMAM WORLD TITLE CARD THIS ST PATRICK’S DAY

LONDON (14 March, 2018) – Boxing fans have more reason to celebrate this St Patrick’s Day with BoxNation to air Michael Conlan’s ring return on the Jose Ramirez v Amir Imam world title card exclusively live this Saturday night.

26-year-old Conlan enjoyed a successful debut year as a professional in 2017, raking up five wins from five fights, and will now return to the place where it all started on St Patrick’s Day last year, New York’s iconic Madison Square Garden.

The 2012 Olympic bronze medalist will take on the heavy handed Hungarian David Berna, who has knocked out 14 opponents in his 15 wins, and will be looking to push on again in 2018.

Conlan’s last fight came in December when he beat Argentina’s Luis Fernando Molina via a unanimous points decision over six rounds.

The rising featherweight star is aiming to continue his impressive form and put on a great fight for his fans tuning in live on BoxNation this weekend.

“I’m looking forward to another fantastic night of boxing in The Theatre at Madison Square Garden. It will be exactly one year to the day since my professional debut in the Mecca of Boxing. I’m excited and ready to put on a great show for my amazing fans,” said Conlan. “I know, like last year, thousands are travelling over from Ireland to support me for which I’m hugely grateful. There is only one place to be on St. Patrick’s Day this year, and that is The Garden!”

Conlan fights on a card headlined by light-welterweight contenders Ramirez, with a record of 25-0, 16 KOs, and Don King’s fighter Imam, 21-1, 18 KOs, who will compete for the vacant WBC world title.

Both men are renowned for the dynamite in their hands, with 25-year-old Ramirez from Avenal, California, an amateur standout and a 2012 U.S. Olympian, having stopped 76% of his opponents.

He is highly thought of by promoters Top Rank, and since pound-for-pound star Terence Crawford made the decision to move up to welterweight that has opened the gateway for a new generation of fighters to fill the gap at 140-pounds.

“I’m honoured for the opportunity to be able to fight for a world title. Since I was only eight years old, with a few amateur victories under my belt, I started dreaming of becoming a world champion. To have that green and gold belt like all the best fighters in history have. I’m living my dream,” said Ramirez. “I’m ready to work as hard as it takes, to overcome any obstacle and adversity that comes my way. I’ve sacrificed, worked, and challenged myself in a way most can’t imagine. Physically and mentally I’ll be more than ready come Saturday. I started drawing this picture 17 years ago, and I almost have it completed.”

Ramirez might be hoping he is the man for the job but New Yorker Imam, who has an even more impressive knockout percentage of 86%, including his last three fights, will be out to paint his own picture and enters this fight world-rated No. 1 by the WBC.

“I’ll have a really good opponent in front of me, and it’s going to be a good fight,” said Imam. “Fighting at Madison Square Garden, where I come from is a big thing, and it is a dream come true. I’m looking forward to it, and I’m working hard. I was ringside in Fresno for Jose’s last fight, so I know what he brings to the table. I know what I’ve got to do to win this belt. This fight will be a clash of two fighters with a lot of knockouts, and it will come down to who can stand up to that leather. If he does come straight forward, I will box and break him down and stop him. I’m not going to call for a knockout, but if it comes within itself, I am going to take advantage of it. Either way, I will leave that ring with the W.”

Jim McMunn, BoxNation Managing Director, said: “It will be a fantastic sporting weekend for the Irish starting with the Gold Cup at Cheltenham on Friday, a possible Grand Slam in the Six Nations on Saturday, all rounded off with one of their own “Fighting Irish”, Michael Conlan, as he steps into the ring at the legendary Madison Square Garden supported by Irish America on St Patrick’s Day. This is a brilliant card with some serious talent on display. Headlined by two ferocious punchers in Jose Ramirez against Amir Imam for the vacant WBC light-welterweight world title, it will be a bill that promises edge-of-the-seat action from start to finish.”

JARON ENNIS IS THE ONE TO WATCH IN PHILLY

PHILADELPHIA – Twenty year old welterweight boxer Jaron “Boots” Ennis will honored as “The One to Watch” at the 11th Annual Briscoe Awards on March 25, 2018. Ennis, currently 18-0, 16 KOs, has been turning heads ever since he turned professional in 2016.
