WBC says Wilder will defend against Stiverne

The WBC has concluded the process, according to its Clean Boxing Program protocol, in the adverse finding of Luis Ortiz. An official ruling has been sent to the corresponding parties.
The WBC has withdrawn its sanction of the Deontay Wilder vs. Ortiz fight, and Wilder will fight next his mandatory fight against Bermane Stiverne.
Specific details will be released at a later date.

Krzysztof Wlodarczyk Training Camp Notes

NEWARK, N.J. (October 4, 2017) – Already a two-time cruiserweight world champion, Krzysztof “Diablo” Wlodarczyk will seek to become a champion a third time, and also put himself into the World Boxing Super Series cruiserweight semi-finals, when he battles IBF Champion Murat Gassiev on Saturday, October 21 in quarter-final action from Prudential Center in Newark, N.J and live on AT&T AUDIENCE Network.

Promoted by Ringstar Sports in association with World Boxing Super Series, tickets for the live event are on sale now and are available at Ticketmaster.com. Tickets are also available to purchase at the Prudential Center box office.

“Anyone who knows me and my experience in this sport knows that I will be ready on October 21,” said Wlodarczyk. “Everything that I’ve done so far in training camp and in sparring is to show my Polish fans in American that ‘Diablo’ is back.”

The Polish former champion not only has a chance to further solidify his place as one of the greatest Polish fighters of this generation, but he can put himself into a position to became the undisputed king of the division.

“I know how important this matchup is and that’s why I’m leaving no stone unturned in training,” said Wlodarczyk. “This fight is for my legacy and I’ve worked hard to have the opportunity. If I can take full advantage of this, then I can send a lot of my fans home happy and that will be my goal on October 21.”

If Wlodarczyk defeats Gassiev and captures the IBF crown, he will move on to the semi-finals to face WBA Champion Yunier Dorticos and put himself even close to winning the Muhammad Ali Trophy in a finals showdown with either WBO Champion Oleksandr Usyk or WBC Champion Mairis Briedis.

“Murat Gassiev is a strong dynamic fighter, but he’s not without flaws,” said Wlodarczyk. “He beat Denis Lebedev in Moscow, and I have to respect that, but I’m working hard with my trainer to catch Gassiev with something that he will not be prepared for. They say he hits hard, but I hit harder.

“When there’s nothing to lose, I’m always the better fighter. Don’t be surprised if Gassiev is on the defensive from the beginning. This is my first time fighting in front of the great Polish fans in New Jersey and New York and I’m going to give them something to remember.”

Wlodarczyk was unable to get revenge for his last defeat in a world title bout against Grigory Drozd after losing in 2014 and suffering an injury before their 2015 rematch. Wlodarczyk earned a 2016 title shot against Beibut Shumenov before Shumenov withdrew from their match with an injury. Overall ,Wlodarczyk has won four contests in a row leading into October 21.

“I’m very happy to be injury free and physically feel at the top of my game,” said Wlodarczyk. “My message to my supporters around the world – don’t doubt my chances. Believe in me like I believe in myself. I’m not only there to beat Gassiev and become the IBF champion. I want to beat him and go all the way and bring that Muhammad Ali Trophy back to Poland!”

Additional action on October 21 will feature a WBSS reserve match between hard-hitting Polish contender Mateusz Masternak and once-beaten Stivens Bujaj, plus a 10-round super welterweight bout between unbeaten Polish contender Maciej Sulecki and former title challenger Jack Culcay.

M-1 Challenge welterweight champion Alexey Kunchenko to defend title against Top contender Sergey Romanov

SAINT PETERSBURG, Russia (October 4, 2017) – Undefeated M-1 Challenge welterweight champion Alexey Kunchenko will make his third title defense in the M-1 Challenge 84 main event against once-beaten challenger Sergey Romanov on October 27 at Ice Palace in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

M-1 Challenge 84 will be streamed live from Saint Petersburg in high definition on www.M1Global.TV. Viewers will be able to watch the preliminary fights and main card by logging on to register at www.M1Global.TV. Fans may watch all the action on their computers, as well as on Android and Apple smart phones and tablets.

In a battle of Russian welterweight fighters, Kunchenko (16-0-0, M-1: 8-0-0) is a Muay Thai specialist who captured his title on April 9, 2016, at M-1 Challenge 65, when Murad Abdulaev retired in the fourth round.

Kunchenko has made two successful title defenses, both won by way of unanimous decisions, against Abdulaev in a rematch and this past March in his last action versus Maksim Grabovich.

Kunchenko unloaded on Grabovich

Romanov (11-1-0, M-1: 5-0-0), who is also unbeaten in M-1 Global competition, defeating Arda Adas, Magomed Sultanakhmedov, Carlos Pereira, Andreas Birgels and Sergio de Fatima. Romanov is a strong striker with eight knockouts on his impressive resume.

Romanav was too much for de Fatima

Undefeated Russian middleweight prospect Artiom Frolov (9-0-0, M-1: 7-0-0) steps up in terms of quality opposition against dangerous Brazilian middleweight Caio “Hellboy” Magalhaes (10-3-0, M-1: 1-0-0) in a fight that has future title implications. Frolov is coming off back-to-back victories in M-1 main card fights against Talekh Nadzhafzade and veteran American fighter Luigi Fioravanti. Magalhaes has fought professionally in the UFC and in his M-1 Global debut at M-1 Challenge 78 last May, he choked Dmitry Voitov into an opening-round submission.

American middleweight Joe “Diesel” Riggs (45-17-1, M-1: 1-0-0) takes on Oleg Olenichev (9-4-0, M-1: 1-0-0) in an intriguing match-up. Another former UFC fighter, Riggs has also had success fighting in Bellator and Strikeforce. The battle-tested Riggs, who was born in Maine and fights out of Arizona, is riding a five-fight win streak. Olenichev made his M-1 Global debut in his last fight, this past June at M-1 Challenge 79, winning a three-round unanimous decision over Enoc Solves Torres (19-9-1), of Spain.

In other main card match-ups, Finnish bantamweight Janne “Jamba” Elonen-Kulmala (15-5-1, M-1: 1-0-1) throws-down with Bair Shtepin (4-2-0, M-1: 1-2-0), and Russian welterweight Temirlan Sharipov (3-0-0, M-1: 1-0-0) takes on fellow countryman Maksim Grabovich (5-3-0, M-1: 4-3-0).

Two preliminary bouts are set as American heavyweight Philip “F-11” De Fries (12-6-0, M-1: 0-0-0) and Russian Anton Vyazigin (7-1-0, M-1: 3-0-0) square-off and Finnish lightweight Jani Salmi (9-3-0, M-1: 0-0-0) faces Russian Roman Bogatov (2-0-0, M-1: 2-0-0).

Additional bouts will soon be announced. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

JONO CARROLL AND DECLAN GERAGHTY TO REMATCH IN BELFAST

Dublin rivals Jono Carroll and Declan Geraghty will rematch for the IBF European Super-Featherweight Championship at the SSE Arena Belfast on Saturday 18th November.

It is a fight Irish boxing fans have clamoured for since Carroll defeated Geraghty via DQ in late 2014 and now both men are determined to settle the score.

Carroll (14-0, 1 KO) won the IBF European title in a Fight of the Year contender against Liverpool’s John Quigley at the Belfast Waterfront in June and is delighted to make the first defence of his title against his Irish rival.

“This is a fight that I’ve wanted for a long time,” said Carroll. “Deco has talked about it many times but the fight had never been presented to me. This is the first time that it’s been offered and I accepted immediately. It’s about time it happened and now we can put it all to rest.”

The first clash ended in controversial circumstances, however, Carroll believes the outcome this time around will be decisive and he has no doubt who will emerge victorious.

“I feel like I’m going over old ground a little but it’s a fight that I need to get out of the way to push on with my career. I want to be remembered as a fighter that accepted every fight that came his way.”

“It’s going to be an exciting fight and one that the fans have been asking for. I always said it would be a great fight for a title and I’ll give him his crack no problem, let’s get it on.”

“Deco is a one-dimensional fighter and can only box, he can’t fight. In the first fight, I knew I’d drag him into a fight and I’m going to do it again. If he stands and bangs I’m going to spark him out, his legs will slow down and then I’m going to smash him up.”

Geraghty (15-2, 4 KO’s) bounced back from his Irish title defeat to James Tennyson with a dominant display against Michael Roberts Jr and is excited to get the opportunity to avenge his defeat to Carroll.

“It’s a fight I’ve always been after and it’s been a long time in coming.” Geraghty said. “The last time I was winning the fight but got disqualified, this time there will be a different outcome.”

The popular Irishman is pleased the IBF title is at stake but ultimately is driven by the opportunity to gain revenge against his Dublin rival.

“The chance to fight and defeat him is my motivation for this one. The belt is a bonus but it’s not the main focus. I wanted the rematch straight away but now is a good time as we are both still young and fresh.

“This one is like Christmas come early for me. I’m looking forward to the challenge and I believe that I will put a lot of things right in this fight and then put this situation between us to bed.”

Main event on an unmissable evening of action sees three-time World Champion Carl Frampton MBE make his highly-anticipated Belfast return against Mexican Horacio Garcia; all-action Belfast hero Jamie Conlan finally has a dream World Title shot against IBF Super-Flyweight World Champion Jerwin Ancajas; WBO Bantamweight World Champion Zolani Tete will be making the first defence of his crown against fellow South African Siboniso Gonya; and the hugely-popular triple Olympian Paddy Barnes makes the first defence of his WBO European Championship.

Further exciting additions to an unmissable card will be announced in due course.

Nate Green vs. Josh Crespo The New Haven Grudge Match Fans Cannot Afford to Miss

New Haven: CT: On October 5, 2017, Josh Crespo (7-5-3, 3 KOs) and Nate Green (9-0, 2 KOs) will meet in the ring for the second time in their young careers in the “Elm City Grudge Match,” the co-feature of Thursday’s installment of the Mohegan Sun’s Rising Stars Boxing Series presented by Main Events. From their contrasting styles to their deep homegrown rivalry, this matchup is guaranteed to deliver fireworks on Thursday night.

Josh Crespo is an aggressive, in-your-face puncher who will stand toe-to-toe with anyone and everyone. He has solid power, a durable chin and fights with an attitude.

In the opposite corner, Nate Green is a technical boxer. Although he lacks the power that his opponent possesses, he does not hesitate to engage. He has a pin-point accurate jab, superb defense and has fought better opposition than Crespo.

Crespo has been calling for this rematch for the last year. While he could have taken the easier road, and built up his record against lesser opposition, he knows a win over Green will be pivotal at this point in his career. He has experienced both high and low points thus far, but he is a fighter who time-after-time puts it all on the line and is willing to go out on his shield. He understands that the window of opportunity for professional fighters is very slim, so he sought out this opportunity and the risks that come with it.

Nate Green is coming off a game-changing win of his own, with an upset decision over Emanuel Rivera in Ponce, Puerto Rico – Rivera’s backyard. Less than two months after the biggest win of his career, Green will get right back in the ring with a hometown rival and familiar foe, but in a higher weight class than their first fight. Green believes that staying active is more important than trying to protect his perfect record, so he is approaching this rematch as a necessary step on his quest to become a world champion.

But perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the fight is the rivalry between Crespo and Green. Both fighters call New Haven, Connecticut their home, so they will each have significant, opposing crowd support at the Mohegan Sun Arena come fight night. They fight out of competing New Haven boxing gyms, which combined with their first matchup, fuels their deep dislike for each other. Both fighters train at rival gyms at the opposite side of New Haven and Crespo and Green are at the forefront of that rivalry.

According the Main Events’ Matchmaker and 2015 NABF Matchmaker of the Year Jolene Mizzone, “This is a great fight all around. Nate Green is putting his undefeated record on the line against a hungry rival looking for redemption. I wish more fighters would take these types of fights. Not only are they great for the New Haven fans but it is a great fight in the ring too.”

About October 5: The Mohegan Sun’s Rising Stars Boxing Series hosts its third installment with a rare Thursday Night edition at the Arena at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut. The Main Event features a ten-round middleweight match-up between Rising Stars’ staple Vaughn Alexander and former middleweight title contender Elvin Ayala. The series is presented by Mohegan Sun and Main Events and feature boxing prospects from New England and around the world. Absolute chaos at Eubank and Yildirim’s final press conference in Stuttgart

British IBO Champion Chris Eubank Jr. (25-1-0,19 KOs) and Turkish Avni Yildirim (16-0, 10 KOs) and their respective teams fought with words at an overheated press conference before Saturday’s Ali Trophy quarter-final clash at the Hanns-Martin-Schleyer Halle.

At the end of the press conference, things escalated when Yildirim’s manager Ahmet Öner was close to engaging himself in a fight with a member of Team Eubank Jr.

Take a look a summary of today’s dramatic events in Stuttgart via our Facebook page here.

You can download the full video (free to use) here.
Or the shorter version of the video here.

Chris Eubank Jr. set the tone for the press conference in his opening statement:

“The warship has landed fully equipped, fully loaded and all the artillery is pointing at Yildirim,” said the 28-year-old third seed in the Ali Trophy super-middleweight tournament.

“So you are coming with all your weapons,” said 26-year-old Avni Yildirim.

“Don’t forget the first world war when everybody was after the Turks and couldn’t do it. We are still here and everyone knows what Turkish soldiers are capable of. Turks are soldiers, war is in our DNA.”

Ahmet Öner, Yildirim’s manager and coach:

“Eubank Jr. is right – this will be war. I hope he has enough weapons to stay 12 rounds. If you win I will be the first guy to respect you and shake your hand, but I do not see that happen.”

Eubank Jr. added:

“One thing I do want to say. I have a lot of respect for the Turkish community, I have Turkish friends and I like Turkish food. This is a fight between two men. I advise Avni to take his focus of off stirring up a drama between two countries.”

Comosa’s Chief Boxing Officer, Kalle Sauerland:

“We are delighted to be in Stuttgart, a great fight town.”

“Eubank Jr. and Yildirim are both stars in their own rights in their countries. We will see a war between two gladiators, two outstanding athletes.”

Tickets for the hotly anticipated fight October 7 at the Hanns-Martin-Schleyer Halle are available at StubHub.de, eventim.de and easyticket.de.

RYAN WALSH: “CEYLAN WON’T ENJOY THE LUXURIES HE HAD AGAINST ME IN LEEDS!”

One man sure to be glued to this month’s IBF Featherweight Final Eliminator between Josh Warrington and Dennis Ceylan is current British 9st king Ryan Walsh.

Twelve months back, contesting the vacant EBU strap, the cagey Cromer southpaw conceded a highly contentious 12 round split decision to the unbeaten Ceylan over in Frederikshavn – despite carpeting the Dane in the opening session.

Here, in his own words, Ryan – World rated by both the WBC (8) and WBO (15) – delivers his assessment of the two principals.

“In the build up, Ceylan was very relaxed and respectful, didn’t give it the ‘big ‘un’. Then, on fight night, he started out quite aggressive – fast and long – until I knocked him on his arse. He thought he’d just steam out and ‘do’ me. Suicide! After that, I believe his corner advised him to keep away.

Ceylan’s supposed to have great amateur pedigree – an ex Olympian and WSB fighter. His speed was okay but he didn’t show any of that pedigree against me, not after I hurt him. He had a weird style, fought out of a hunch. He’s certainly no Mikkel Kessler though he has quite a similar style.

We knew beforehand if I didn’t knock him out I couldn’t win over there. I scored a genuine knockdown when I hit his chest – part of the scoring target – but nothing given. Another time, the ref virtually held Dennis up when I wobbled him. You could tell that he knew once he got to the final bell, he’d be given the verdict. He’ll not enjoy those luxuries in Leeds.

At the time, I thought Ceylan was a real tough bastard; very stubborn and steely. He also looked good against Isaac Lowe. (a four round technical draw, five months later)

I think the styles of Warrington and Ceylan should mesh well and it’ll be a competitive fight. I expect Ceylan to offer plenty of resistance early on but he lacks experience. He’s not been in with many top fighters. I’m easily the best he’s fought.

Warrington is every fit and big at the weight. He’s got good energy and does that grab and ‘crab’ thing, similar to Ricky Burns. He throws a few then falls in and clings. Warrington will win a points decision then move on to Selby.”

Chief support on an unmissable evening of action sees Huddersfield’s British Super-Lightweight Champion Tyrone Nurse (35-2-2,7 KOs) make a highly-anticipated defence of his crown against undefeated Chorley star Jack Catterall (18-0, 10 KOs).

Undefeated Midlands Area Super-Featherweight Champion Lyon Woodstock takes on Southern Area Champion Craig Poxton in a guaranteed barn burner.

Undefeated Liverpool Super-Welterweight talent J.J Metcalf (16-0, 8 KOs) takes on Leeds native Damon Jones (15-1, 3 KOs) in an official eliminator for the British title currently held by Warren stablemate Liam Williams.

An action-packed undercard also features British Middleweight Champion Tommy Langford (18-1, 6 KOs); former Commonwealth Games bronze medallist and GB squad standout Sam Maxwell (Super-Lightweight, 3-0, 2 KOs); Bradford Welterweight Darren Tetley (14-0, 5KOs); Chapel-en-le-Frith Cruiserweight Jack Massey (12-0, 6 KOs); Doncaster Featherweight Reece Mould (6-0, 2 KOs); Leeds Flyweight Jack Bateson (1-0, 1 KO) and the professional debut of Leeds fighter Jack Daniels.

Tickets for Warrington v Ceylan priced at £30 (Upper Tier), £40 (Lower Tier), £60 (Floor), £100 (Floor), £120 (Floor) and £200 (VIP/Hospitality) are available from:

CARL FRAMPTON FACES HORACIO GARCIA IN BELFAST HOMECOMING

Carl Frampton MBE will face Mexico’s Horacio Garcia in a ten round Featherweight contest on his highly-anticipated Belfast homecoming at the SSE Arena on Saturday 18th November, live on BT Sport and BoxNation.

It will be the three-time World Champion’s first fight in his home city since he successfully defended his IBF Super-Bantamweight crown against American Chris Avalos at the same venue back in February 2015.

Frampton went on to create history by becoming the first Northern Irishman to win World Titles in two weight divisions when he defeated Mexican Leo Santa Cruz in an unforgettable battle for the WBA Super Featherweight Championship in New York in July 2016.

It was Frampton’s first fight as a professional at Featherweight, having moved up a division after unifying the IBF and WBA Super-Bantamweight titles by outclassing Scott Quigg in Manchester earlier that year.

Garcia, 27, holds a top record of 33 wins from 37 contests; with 24 of those victories coming by way of knockout. Before a surprise loss to Diuhl Olguin, which he quickly avenged, his only career losses had come to two-weight World Champion Hozumi Hasegawa and rising star Joseph Diaz.

“This is a fight that really excites me,” said Frampton. “Garcia will definitely come and have a go. He’s a typical Mexican warrior, he’s tough and he’s game and he’ll try and put it on me in front of my home crowd.

“He has never been stopped in his career and has only lost to World class opposition, excluding the loss against Olguin. It will be good to get a fight in against a live opponent before I get one of the big boys in the new year.

“This fight has been a long time coming and it’s good to be back out in Belfast topping a double World Title bill that also features my good friend Paddy Barnes defending his WBO European title.

“It’s a great bill, probably the best bill that Ireland has ever seen, I don’t think people will criticise me too much for saying that. It’s a quality bill and to be topping it is a huge honour.

“I asked for a ten-round fight. I would have been happy to be doing twelve rounds but speaking to my team after the bad year I’ve had and the long layoff they thought it was only fair to come back with a ten rounder before we target the big names.”

Promoter Frank Warren said: “Carl is an Irish boxing legend and to be promoting his first fight back in Belfast since creating history is a huge honour. He is a fighting man and asked for a tough opponent on his big return.

“Garcia holds a top record and will provide a test for him on November 18th. By the time the fight comes around, Carl will have been out of the ring for over ten months. He has a new trainer, management team and promoter, it is a lot for a fighter to have to deal with but I am expecting to see him back at his best next month.

“Once he has got a good fight under his belt we will push on to one of the big boys in the new year and then Windsor Park next summer, which is where we want to be with him, in a massive fight.”

On the same bill, all-action Belfast hero Jamie Conlan finally has a dream World Title shot, he will be challenging tough Filipino Jerwin Ancajas for the IBF World Super-Flyweight belt; WBO Bantamweight World Champion Zolani Tete will be making the first defence of his crown against fellow South African Siboniso Gonya; and the hugely-popular triple Olympian Paddy Barnes makes the first defence of his WBO European Championship.

Further exciting additions to an unmissable card will be announced in due course.

Tickets for Frampton Reborn will go on sale to the general public at 12 noon on Wednesday 4th October via the SSE Arena Belfast Box Office, www.ssearenabelfast.com and 028 9073 9074.

BRONX HEAVYWEIGHT GEORGE ARIAS ADDED TO STACKED UNDERCARD SUPPORTING SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING TRIPLEHEADER PRESENTED BY PREMIER BOXING CHAMPIONS

BROOKLYN (October 3, 2017) – Popular, undefeated Dominican heavyweight George Arias (8-0, 4 KOs), of The Bronx, NY, has been added to the undercard of the SHOWTIME Championship Boxing tripleheader, presented by Premier Boxing Champions, on Saturday, October 14, at Barclays Center, the home of BROOKLYN BOXING. Newly signed to promoter DiBella Entertainment, Arias will face Mexican Mario Heredia (14-5, 12 KOs), a former WBC Fecombox titlist from San Diego, CA, in a scheduled eight-round contest.

“I am very happy and grateful for this opportunity to sign with DiBella Entertainment and to be a part of this great event at Barclays Center on October 14,” said Arias. “I look forward to displaying my talent in front the local fans as I work toward my goal of becoming a world champion.”

“Heavyweight George Arias is a tremendous prospect with an entertaining, fan-friendly style,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “I am excited to add him to an already-stacked undercard on October 14 at Barclays Center, in his first fight under the DiBella Entertainment banner.”

Born in San Francisco de Macoris, Dominican Republic, Arias moved to New York City in 1996, at four years old. After graduating from high school, he learned to box at Morris Park Boxing Gym near his home. He won the New York Golden Gloves tournament in 2014 then turned pro that October. Now trained and managed by Leon Washington Jr. and advised by Andre Rozier, Arias returned to the ring in 2017 following a 13-month layoff and has won three straight. On June 3, Arias emerged victorious via unanimous decision after a six-round war against undefeated Russian prospect Ruslan Shamalov, in the co-featured bout of DiBella Entertainment’s “Broadway Boxing” series. Arias then made his Barclays Center debut on July 29, handing Elder Hernandez his first loss by fourth-round stoppage, on the undercard of the Broner vs. Garcia event. Anxious to thrill his growing hometown fan base, Arias is determined to add another impressive victory to his ledger on October 14.

The SHOWTIME Championship Boxing tripleheader presented by Premier Boxing Champions on Saturday, October 14, features six of the world’s best super welterweights, with three world titles at stake, from Barclays Center, the home of BROOKLYN BOXING®.
Headlining the card, Erislandy Lara makes the seventh defense of his WBA title against unbeaten contender Terrell Gausha. WBC titlist Jermell Charlo takes on the young, hungry and fellow unbeaten Erickson Lubin in the co-feature and Jarrett Hurd opens up the telecast defending his IBF belt for the first time against former champion Austin Trout.

Parral, Mex’s Oscar Duarte (11-0-1, 7 KOs) will be in a scheduled eight-round lightweight battle against a soon-to-be announced opponent, and Dallas’s Javier Martinez (2-0, 2 KOs) will participate in a six-round featherweight bout against Ricardo Arias (1-1-1).

Below is what undercard fighters on the Oct. 13 edition of Golden Boy Boxing on ESPN had to say at today’s media workout:

MARCELINO “NINO” LOPEZ, Super Lightweight Contender:
“I’m happy knowing that this fight will be very big and important. It is especially important to win if I want to keep moving up in my career. I am ready to give good battle. I know that Pablo Cesar Cano is young but experienced boxer, but I’m very experienced as well. I’m only focusing on Oct. 13 right now, and then we’ll see what happens, though we know we want a very big fight next.”

“I’m being held to a higher standard because I’ll be fighting on television, and that motivates me. I feel good. Hopefully, some of the little details from the previous disappointments are fixed this time around. When it comes down to it, it’s on you. You have to work on yourself. I’ve been training really hard.”

MARVIN CABRERA, Super Welterweight Prospect:
“Everybody wants to be on TV, and I respect that, and that’s how we’re training. We’ve been training for more than 2 months. I’m really excited and this is a great opportunity. It’s going to be a show inside the ring. That’s what the fans want, I’m excited to give that to the fans.”

RUBEN RODRIGUEZ, Super Lightweight Prospect:
“My first professional fight took place in August of this year and it was exciting, especially because I opened up the Cotto-Kamegai card. Now that it’s my second fight, I still feel some pressure because I’ll be fighting in my hometown of Indio, California, and I have family and friends going. But I focus on fighting, not on what happens outside.”

OSCAR DUARTE, Lightweight Prospect:
“I’m very happy to return to the ring, and to enjoy doing what I like most, which is fighting. We have worked on new things, and we are excited to bring those to the ring. My last two fights were in Mexico, but I’m ready to fight again in the United States.”

JAVIER MARTINEZ, Featherweight Prospect:
“Like any other fighter, I’m working on discipline. That’s the struggle, staying focused. This has been one of the best training camps I’ve ever had. I feel like in this fight I’m going to show all my skills. In other fights I was a little too aggressive. This time I’m going to be smarter. I’m an exciting fighter. Everyone should come out to see the fight.”

On the Oct. 6 edition of LA FIGHT CLUB, lightweight knockout artist Christian “Chimpa” Gonzalez (17-1, 15 KOs) will seek to confirm that he is one of the brightest prospects when he faces former WBC World Super Featherweight Champion Gamaliel “El Plátano” Diaz (40-17-3, 19 KOs) in an eight-round bout. LA Fan favorite Edgar “Kid Neza” Valerio (11-0, 6 KOs) will up the ante as he steps into the ring with the experienced Martin “Marciano” Cardona (24-8, 16 KOs) in an eight-round featherweight fight. Rising star Jousce “Tito” Gonzalez (5-0, 5 KOs) will open up the televised card as he takes on Ciudad Juarez’s Ricardo “Maniac” Fernandez (3-6-4) in a six-round lightweight bout.

Below is what undercard fighters on the Oct. 6 edition of LA FIGHT CLUB had to say at today’s media workout:

CHRISTIAN “CHIMPA” GONZALEZ, Lightweight Prospect:
“It will be an accomplishment when I fight a former world champion, Gamaliel Diaz, this Friday. I never thought that at such a young age this would be happening, but I’m looking forward to the challenge. I haven’t done anything different for this fight. I always train at 110 percent and I always give it my all. If everything comes out well, I’ll hopefully fight once more this year in my last eight round fight. Next year, I’ll move up to 10 rounds.”

EDGAR “KID NEZA” VALERIO, Featherweight Prospect:
“I feel great; training was fantastic. I was working on many things, correcting my mistakes from the last fight. I’m becoming a better fighter. There’s an old saying that perfection is impossible, but I can try to be perfect. There’s no such thing as failure; everything is a learning lesson.”

JOUSCE “TITO” GONZALEZ, Lightweight Prospect:
“I’m very excited. I’m ready to get back to the show. I’ve been in training camp. I’m ready. I’m in shape. I’m ready to go. I feel like I have everything. I always give people a show, and I’m ready to give the fans and everybody else a show this Friday.”

Daniel Jacobs vs. Luis Arias & Jarrell Miller vs. Mariusz Wach – Saturday, November 11 Televised Live on HBO

Daniel Jacobs will face Luis Arias on his Matchroom Boxing debut at NYCB LIVE, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York on Saturday, November 11. The middleweight clash will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Former WBA Middleweight king Jacobs (32-2, 29 KOs), is back in action following his brilliant performance in New York against Gennady Golovkin last March. The Brooklyn born ‘Miracle Man’ is targeting world title action in 2018 and will be looking for an explosive performance against the unbeaten American Arias to signal his intent to be recognized as the man in the deeply talented 160 pound division.

“I’m excited to debut at the Coliseum on November 11 live and exclusive on HBO,” said Jacobs. “We wanted a real fight for the fans and have picked a young hungry lion in Luis Arias. I’m looking to make a real statement on Nov 11 and prove I am number one in this division. Don’t miss it!”

Wisconsin-based Arias (18-0, 9 KOs), will look to spoil Jacobs’ plans at the first hurdle. The 27 year old decorated amateur and USBA champion is thrilled to have landed the huge fight he’s been craving and to announce himself on the world scene.

“I want to thank Roc Nation Sports, Matchroom Boxing and HBO for making this fight happen,” Arias said. “I’ve been hungry for a fight of this magnitude and I’m going to shock the world. Danny is a talented fighter, but I thrive in the limelight and look forward to showing the boxing world that I’m a force to be reckoned with on Nov. 11. Confidence has always been the key to my success and I know this fight will take my career to the next level.”

“Roc Nation Sports prides itself for creating fights with the potential to transform the boxing landscape – this fight between Luis Arias and Danny Jacobs is no different,” said Roc Nation President & Chief of Branding and Strategy Michael R. Yormark. “Time after time, Luis has shined under the bright lights and he deserves this opportunity to establish his dominance against a competitor of Danny’s caliber. We’re thrilled to work with Matchroom Boxing and HBO to make a memorable fight that pits two of the best Middleweight fighters in the world together.”

Also part of the HBO telecast serving as the chief-support on the first Matchroom Boxing USA fight night card sees exciting heavyweight Jarrell ‘Big Baby’ Miller taking on Mariusz Wach. Miller looks to stake his claim for a world title shot in 2018 with an impressive performance while Wach looks to spoil his plans.

Unbeaten Miller (19-0, 17 KOs), recorded his 17th win inside the distance this past July when he forced the retirement of Gerald Washington at Barclays Center. The Brooklyn native will look to lay down a marker as he meets Poland’s former world title challenger Wach (33-2, 17 KOs), who has his mind set on upsetting Miller’s game plan.

“I’m delighted to announce the return of the ‘Miracle Man’ Daniel Jacobs on November 11 at the Coliseum against the dangerous and unbeaten Luis Arias,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “We believe that Danny is the number one Middleweight in the world and the aim is to collect every belt in the division.

“Also on the card is one of the brightest and loudest Heavyweight stars as Brooklyn’s Jarrell Miller in the fight of his career so far against the highly ranked Mariusz Wach. Fans can expect an electric night of boxing with a deep card featuring some of the biggest talents from both sides of the Atlantic.”

“Inspiring and electric in the ring, Daniel Jacobs is a true ambassador for boxing,” says Peter Nelson, executive vice president, HBO Sports. “Daniel is a force to be reckoned with in the stacked middleweight division. We look forward to watching his exceptionally bright future unfold as part of the HBO family.”

“Danny has been part of our family in Brooklyn since our doors opened at Barclays Center five years ago,” said Brett Yormark, CEO of Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment, which also manages and operates the Coliseum. “I am thrilled to extend our relationship to Danny’s second home on Long Island, where boxing fans at the Coliseum can see firsthand what makes him a force to be reckoned with in the ring. I would like to thank Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Boxing, HBO, and Roc Nation Sports for their support in bringing this world-class boxing event to Long Island.”

Tickets for the live event will go on sale on Thursday, October 5 at 10 a.m. and can be purchased at ticketmaster.com, NYCBLIVE.com or by calling 800-745-3000. Tickets can also be purchased at the Ticketmaster Box Office at the Coliseum, starting Friday, October 6 at noon.

TETE TO DEFEND WBO BANTAMWEIGHT WORLD TITLE AGAINST GONYA IN BELFAST

Zolani Tete will make the first defence of his WBO Bantamweight World Championship against fellow South African Siboniso Gonya at the SSE Arena Belfast on Saturday 18th November, live on BT Sport and BoxNation.

His Final Eliminator for the WBO World Bantamweight title at the Leicester Arena in April against Arthur Villanueva was upgraded to an Interim title fight by the governing body after the Champion Marlon Tapales was stripped of his belt.

Tete duly won the Interim belt, outscoring Villanueva by a wide margin. He oozed class over 12 rounds on his way to an emphatic points win over Filipino Villanueva. After 12 rounds, and dropping Villanueva in the eleventh, Tete secured a unanimous decision with scores of 120-107 and 119-108 (twice).

In another interesting twist, the WBO then elevated Tete to full World Champion status whilst he was on his flight home to South Africa. With the win, Tete became a two-weight World Champion, following his devastating KO victory against Ellesmere Port’s Paul Butler for the IBF Super-Flyweight title at the Echo Arena Liverpool back in 2015.

He now stands as one of the most dangerous fighters in the World, possessing a ram rod jab and one punch knockout power that poses a threat to any of the current World Champions in his weight class and has led to 20 KO’s in 25 wins.

Gonya, the reigning WBO Intercontinental Bantamweight Champion, is third in line for Tete’s World Title. The 25-year-old, who hails from the Kwazulu-Natal province, holds a record of 11-1 (5 KOs) and is relishing the challenge of fighting the best in his division.

“I’m delighted to be making the first defence of my World Title in Belfast,” said Tete. “I’ll be looking to make a statement in Ryan Burnett’s hometown as I know this is a fight my team tried to make for me but he didn’t want to know. I have the beating of all of the Bantamweight World Champions.

“I believe myself and Burnett would provide fans with a brilliant fight, I know the people Belfast love their boxing and hopefully this is a fight that can be made when we both come through our next fights. For now all of my focus is on Siboniso Gonya on November 18.

“He is a good fighter and I am looking forward to testing myself against him. He is a fellow South African but there are no friends inside the ring. I hope he will put up a good fight but I will be heading back to South Africa with my belt around my waist.”

“I have wanted this fight badly for some time and I am delighted that I finally have the chance to test myself against a fighter of Tete’s calibre,” said Gonya. “He is a two-weight World Champion and one of the most avoided fighters in the World.

“Whilst other fighters have avoided him, I am relishing the opportunity to take his World Title from him. The odds will be stacked in his favour but I am a warrior and this is my moment. I believe it is my destiny to win a World Title.”

Three-time World Champion Carl Frampton MBE makes his highly-anticipated Belfast homecoming in the evening’s main event; all-action warrior Jamie Conlan challenges Filipino Jerwin Ancajas for the IBF World Super-Flyweight belt and Triple Olympian Paddy Barnes makes the first defence of his WBO European Flyweight belt.

Cox: The future is now, it’s time to capitalise!

Jamie Cox (24-0, 13 KOs) says he is ready to unleash his full potential as he prepares for his World Boxing Super Series quarter-final contest against George Groves (26-3, 19 KOs) on October 14 at the SSE Arena, Wembley in London.

“It’s an honour to be part of the World Boxing Super Series,” said Cox. “Some great names, some great fights, the best fighting the best, that’s what it should be about with The Muhammad Ali Trophy as the end result. I set my targets high and this is the big one.”

Do you see this tournament as a chance to show your full potential?

“I have done it in the gyms with world champions, now it’s time to do it on the big stage. I am looking forward to showcasing myself and show people what I am about and how hard I work in the gym and the dedication I have to the game.”

Are you happy with what you have achieved so far in your career?

“I don’t care about my trophies and what I have achieved so far, the past is irrelevant, I care about the future and the future is now. The goal is to win the Muhammad Ali Trophy. Beating George Groves is the first step and step by step I will reach my goal.”

How is it to work under John Costello?

“I have been working with John for 10 or 11 years now. John is the man. We are very close, like family. John is honest, he has great passion for the game and he has a great eye for boxing. He sees boxing very good and the technical ability, he has a lot of national champions in his gym and that’s all down to technique. He has a great work ethic. Whether it’s a good or bad situation he is correct and you have to focus on every detail in what he is saying. We have made it far, but now we are going to capitalise!”

How would you describe this training camp compared to your previous preparations?

“It’s serious now. This is page one in the story of my future. I am enjoying and embracing the hard work it takes to win the Muhammad Ali Trophy. And I am not only going to win this trophy for myself; I am winning it for my family, my friends, my promoter, my team. Everyone who really knows me knows that all I really concentrate on is boxing, my family, my friends and my team and I am very loyal to my people. We are all in the same boat.”

Tickets for the Ali Trophy quarter-final Groves vs. Cox on October 14 at the SSE Arena, Wembley in London are on sale ranging from £35 to £130 at axs.com.

Danish rock star Jesper Binzer performs song written for WBSS in Stuttgart

On Saturday the fans in Stuttgart’s Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle and the viewers around the world will experience the signature rock song connected to the World Boxing Super Series, ‘The Future is Now’, when Jesper Binzer performs the song live in the ring just before the Ali Trophy quarter-final between Eubank Jr. and Yildirim.

“I am looking very much forward to this experience,” said Binzer.

“I am fortunate to have many fans in Germany where I have been performing many times with my band D-A-D. Being in Stuttgart at an Ali Trophy quarter-final is huge for me, and I hope the song can turn up the excitement even more before the two fighters face off in the ring,” said Binzer.

Binzer, who remains a part of the famous Danish rockband D-A-D, made the song as part of a solo project.

“I know one of the tournament organizers and when he told me about the World Boxing Super Series project it just struck me,” said Binzer.

“I always had a song in my head about facing the future with gloves on and that the future is now. For all those world champions and challengers in the tournament the future definitely is now, so I am glad I can contribute to this fun and exciting tournament.”

‘The Future is Now’ first featured at the Draft Gala in Monaco in July when all 16 star boxers came face-to-face.

CRAIG POXTON ON WHY HE BEATS RISING STAR LYON WOODSTOCK

Lowestoft giantslayer Craig Poxton enters this month’s mouth-watering domestic dust-up against Leicester’s Lyon Woodstock intent on convincing the fight trade that he’s no ‘one fight wonder’

Poxton executed one of the upsets of the year last February when he chopped down Chingford’s previously unbeaten Boy Jones Jr in ten to snare the Southern Area Super-Featherweight strap at The York Hall.

‘I’d seen quite a bit of Ben (Jones) on the Walsh’s undercards,’ said Poxton. ‘He’s a very tough kid who gets his shots off nicely – props to him – but, on that night, I was too ‘man’ for him, all round.

‘He couldn’t cope with my pressure. Still, he’s very young and I’m sure he’ll rebuild and come again. Perhaps we’ll do it again one day.’

And the father of two daughters knows that a similar slaughter of the fancied Woodstock (9-0, 5 quick) could propel him to the cusp of an unlikely crack at the British title.

‘I sparred with Lyon a few times and he brings a lot of power,’ acknowledged Craig who, nevertheless, insists he won’t be unnerved by the trigger tongued Midlander’s trash talking.

‘Lyon likes to get in your face and if he needs that to get stoked, good for him. But that won’t bother me. I’m not one for mouthing off and won’t get side tracked by who said what. Boxing’s a man’s sport. You don’t need all the BS. Just enjoy the fight.’

Now 13-4 (2), Poxton claims he is perfectly primed for what is easily the toughest test thus far for both principals.

‘I always train as if it’s the hardest fight I’ll ever have, against the best possible version of my opponent. I never take my foot off the gas.

‘I’ve had eight weeks notice and a quality camp; lots of top sparring with the Walshes and Archie Sharp. I’m ready to go to work.

‘I think I’ll win because I train very hard, fight very hard and I’ve more ability than people think. I leave the business side to my team but I know a convincing win will definitely put me in the British title shake up.’

Main event on October 21 sees local hero Josh Warrington face the undefeated Dennis Ceylan in an Official Eliminator for Lee Selby’s IBF Featherweight World Championship.

Undefeated Liverpool Super-Welterweight talent J.J Metcalf (16-0, 8 KOs) takes on Leeds native Damon Jones (15-1, 3 KOs) in an official eliminator for the British title currently held by Warren stablemate Liam Williams.

A stellar undercard also features British Middleweight Champion Tommy Langford (18-1, 6 KOs); former Commonwealth Games bronze medallist and GB squad standout Sam Maxwell (Super-Lightweight, 3-0, 2 KOs); Bradford Welterweight Darren Tetley (14-0, 5KOs); Chapel-en-le-Frith Cruiserweight Jack Massey (12-0, 6 KOs); Doncaster Featherweight Reece Mould (6-0, 2 KOs); Leeds Flyweight Jack Bateson (1-0, 1 KO) and the professional debut of Leeds fighter Jack Daniels.

Tickets for Warrington v Ceylan priced at £30 (Upper Tier), £40 (Lower Tier), £60 (Floor), £100 (Floor), £120 (Floor) and £200 (VIP/Hospitality) are available from:

DIBELLA ENTERTAINMENT’S BROADWAY BOXING RETURNS TO FOXWOODS RESORT CASINO

New York City (October 2, 2017) DIBELLA ENTERTAINMENT’s acclaimed BROADWAY BOXING series returns to the beautiful Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, CT, on Saturday, October 28, headlined by an excellent 10-round clash between popular lightweight contender MATT “The Sharp Shooter” REMILLARD (25-1, 14 KOs), of Hartford, CT, and battle-tested Mexican veteran YARDLEY ARMENTA CRUZ (22-8, 12 KOs), now fighting out of Sacramento, CA.

Also featured on October 28, top welterweight prospect 19-year-old “Marvelous” MYKQUAN WILLIAMS (8-0, 4 KOs), of East Hartford, CT, faces SOMNER MARTIN (7-5, 4 KOs), of Martinsville, VA, in a scheduled six-round bout.

Tickets for the October 28 event, promoted by DiBella Entertainment and presented by Nissan of Queens, Azad Watches, OPTYX, and Christos Steak House, are priced at $125, $75 and $45, are Now On Sale and can be purchased online at Foxwoods.com, Ticketmaster.com, by calling 800-200-2882, or visiting the Foxwoods box office. Foxwoods Resort Casino is located at 350 Trolley Line Boulevard, Mashantucket, CT 06338. Doors will open to the Fox Theater at 7:00 p.m. ET with the first bell at 7:30 p.m. ET.

“I am thrilled to return to Foxwoods Resort Casino for another installment of Broadway Boxing on October 28,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “We will have a stacked card featuring New England talent, highlighted by the popular Shelly Vincent, welterweight prospect Mykquan Williams and lightweight contender Matt Remillard in the main event.”

“I love fighting at Foxwoods, it’s a great atmosphere for the fans to have a truly enjoyable experience at a world class venue,” said Remillard.

“Cruz is a very experienced, scrappy fighter who switches up quite a bit, but I’ll be well prepared for him and emerge victorious on October 28. I think my endurance will help me win the fight in the second half.

“I’m still shaking off the rust, but in 2018, I want to fight for a world title. I believe 130 pounds will be my best weight going forward.”

Stated Williams, “Foxwoods is like my living room. This is my eighth time fighting there. With each fight, my fan base continues to grow and it’s a thrill to see the support increasing with each victory.

“This is my second time fighting a southpaw as a professional, so we are changing up training a little bit to prepare. The experience is good for my career, learning how to adapt to different styles and still be successful in the ring is very important as I move forward.”

Impressively resuming his career, Remillard has decisively won his first two starts of 2017.

On April 1, displaying his array of world class skills, Remillard won an eight-round decision versus Agustine Mauras in Worcester, MA.

Following that up on June 3, Remillard made his triumphant return to Foxwoods Resort Casino with a fourth-round stoppage of Fatiou Fassinou.

Having battled numerous undefeated prospects on the West Coast including Mario Barrios and Ryan Martin, the 23-year-old Cruz challenged former world champion Billy Dib on July 29, 2017, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. After three rounds of excellent two-way action, a clash of heads stopped the fight in the fourth round, resulting in a disappointing no-contest.

Fighting for the eighth time at Foxwoods Resort Casino, fan favorite Williams, managed by the legendary Jackie Kallen, returns to the venue’s hallowed ring following a six-round shutout decision versus Evincii Dixon on September 15, his third victory this year.

The visiting Martin will look to stay in the win column against Williams, most recently winning a six-round decision against Deandre West on August 27.

Rounding out the exciting card and seeing action in separate fights against opponents to be announced will be undefeated middleweight STEVE ROLLS (16-0, 9 KOs), of Toronto, Cananda, undefeated middleweight prospect NICKLAUS FLAZ (4-0, 4 KOs), of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, and women’s junior lightweight contender SHELLY “Shelito’s Way” VINCENT (20-1, 1 KO), of Providence, RI.

Also featured on the undercard, undefeated and heavy-handed welterweight KHIRY TODD
(5-0, 5 KOs), of Lynn, MA, and junior welterweight NICKY DEQUATTRO (1-0, 1 KO), of Johnston, RI, will battle in scheduled four-rounders.

Broadway Boxing is presented by Nissan of Queens, Azad Watches, OPTYX, and Christos Steak House.

Samuel Clarkson Refocused as Ring Return Approaches

Brooklyn, N.Y. (Oct. 2, 2017) – Uprising Promotions light heavyweight Samuel “Main Event” Clarkson (19-4, 12 KOs) has used the past few months for reflection and adjusting certain components of his preparation, and the refocused Texas native looks to bring a new demeanor when he soon makes his return to the ring.

“Everything is exactly where it’s supposed to be right now,” Clarkson stated. “The fight that happened in April is over. I needed it, and everything happens for a reason. I’m more hungry, I’m a lot more vicious, and I’m stronger now. Since that fight, I’ve incorporated weights, and I’m a lot stronger. I’m on a mission to hurt everyone in my way.”

The April bout that Clarkson mentions was an interim WBA Light Heavyweight championship fight against Dmitry Bivol, which brought a close to a nine-bout winning streak. Relatively unknown when Clarkson stepped up to fight him, Bivol has since climbed to the top of the light heavyweight rankings and will face Trent Broadhurst on Nov. 4 for the vacant WBA Light Heavyweight Title.

“Like I said, everything happens for a reason,” Clarkson continued. “You never lose in a fight like that. If you choose to look at it that way, then you’re a loser at heart. I only look at the positives that came out of it. I needed to go through that to learn how to manage my diet the right way so I could become stronger. Since then, I’ve been really managing my diet while also incorporating weights. Not only am I a lot stronger, but now I’m more focused. With everything that’s been happening, I really feel like I needed that, and I cannot wait to get back under the lights.”

Clarkson, 27, is a man who has been counted out before, and he has proven the doubters wrong repeatedly throughout his career. Amid his previous nine-bout winning streak, he entered the ring as the “b-side” fighter and emerged victorious against the likes of former world title challenger Cedric Agnew (decision win), as well as then once-beatens Jerry Odom (TKO-3) and Lavarn Harvell (TKO-2) on ShoBox: The New Generation.

“I am definitely more vicious,” Clarkson said of the changes he has made since April. “Whoever steps in that ring, if they’re not on the same level mentally as me, I’m knocking them out. I’m not playing with anybody. I’m hitting them everywhere, and I’m trying to hurt everybody. I’m going back for what’s mine, so the goal is to knock down everyone in front of me.”

Both unfortunately and fortunately, boxing is a sport that brings on heavy support when a fighter is winning and clears out plenty of people after a loss. Clarkson notes that his fight with Bivol helped him find out who was truly supporting him.

“After my last fight, a lot of people changed on me,” he remarked. “It was a low point for me after I lost because I know how bad I wanted it. I feel like a lot of people wanted the success just because of what they see in me instead of knowing what’s in me. After I took that loss, it hurt. It really hurt my pride a lot, but my family was like ‘It’s over with. Keep pushing. There’s no reason to keep yourself down. It’s all about how you bounce back.’ I was feeling really low, and they pulled me out of that. When I came out of it, I was a lot stronger than what I was beforehand. I definitely owe my family and the few friends I have the next knockout.”

Negotiations are currently underway for Clarkson’s return to the ring, which is expected to occur sometime in October or November. Make sure to keep it locked to UprisingPromotions.com and @UprisingNYC for all of the latest on Clarkson and Uprising Promotions.

Erislandy Lara vs. Terrell Gausha Training Camp Notes

BROOKLYN (October 2, 2017) – WBA Super Welterweight World Champion Erislandy “The American Dream” Lara will defend his belt for the fifth time, and the first against an unbeaten opponent, when he battles 2012 U.S. Olympian Terrell Gausha in the headlining fight of a SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING tripleheader on Saturday, October 14 from Barclays Center, the home of BROOKLYN BOXING®.

Coverage on SHOWTIME begins live at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT and features hard-hitting unbeaten champion Jermell “Iron Man” Charlo taking on top contender Erickson “Hammer” Lubin and “Swift” Jarrett Hurd making his first title defense against tough former world champion Austin “No Doubt” Trout.

Tickets to the event are on sale now and start at $50 (not including applicable fees). Tickets can be purchased at ticketmaster.com, barclayscenter.com or by calling 800-745-3000. Tickets can also be purchased at the American Express Box Office at Barclays Center. Group discounts are available by calling 844-BKLYN-GP.

Here is what the fighters had to say from their respective training camps:

ERISLANDY LARA

(24-2-2, 14 KOs) From Guantanamo, Cuba & Training with Ronnie Shields in Houston

Q. How has training camp gone? Has it been affected by the Hurricanes and what is your message for the people effected in your training home in Houston and home in Miami?

“Training camp is going smooth as always. A lot of hard work has been put into the camp. As far as the hurricanes, it flooded bad in the areas close to our gym, but we were only gone for a couple of days. The roads to the gym were flooded, so we couldn’t go to the gym on those days. I just want to say I’m praying for all those affected by the hurricanes in Houston, Miami and Puerto Rico.”

Q. What do you know about Gausha and what kind of problems does he present? What do you have to be prepared to do to get the win?

“Gausha is a very good fighter. I know he was an Olympian and is currently undefeated as a professional. There’s nothing he does that I haven’t already seen. So, I’m just going to stick to my game plan and listen to my corner. If I stay composed I will be able to put on the performance I’m looking for.”

Q. What does it mean to you to be on a card with all of these 154-pound champions and top contenders? How important is it to make a statement to the rest of the division?

“It’s a great honor, especially since I’m in the main event. It shows I’m the top fighter in the division. Getting the win by all means necessary will be my statement. If I get the knockout, it will be icing on the cake as the say here in the U.S.”

Q. What do you think is the significance of you being the longest-reigning 154-pound champion? If you’re able to win on October 14 what fights in the division do you want to make in the future?

“It means a lot. I have a goal to break the record, held by Gianfranco Ross, for most title defenses at 11. But I’ll always be ready to fight anyone they put in front of me. I want big challenges so I would love to fight with GGG or Canelo, and I would also jump at the chance to unify against Cotto or Hurd.”

TERRELL GAUSHA

(20-0, 9 KOs) From Cleveland, Ohio & Training with Manny Robles in Norwalk, California

Q. How has training camp gone so far? Who have you been sparring with and what have they been able to do to prepare you for Lara? Have you tried anything new this training camp?

“Training has been great. We’ve been at it for 10 weeks. I’ve been sparring with good partners, even though I can’t pronounce most of their names. We brought in a bronze medalist from the 2012 Olympics, Chris Pearson and a great Nigerian fighter as well. They’re defensively skilled and as close as we could find to Lara’s style. He’s hard to mimic, but they’re close. We’re not really doing anything new, just working more rounds. I’ve done lots of 12-rounders in sparring, but we’ll save the rest of our secrets for fight night.”

Q. What does it mean to you to fight for a world title for the first time? Is there extra motivation from seeing other 2012 Olympians who’ve picked up titles?

“It’s a blessing and a dream come true. I’ve been working on this since I first laced up the gloves. Not everyone gets this shot and I plan on taking full advantage. Those guys from the 2012 Olympics are my brothers. We talked about things like this back at the Olympics. Then they went out and showed me it’s possible. I want to be the next one to pick up a title to fulfill my promise too.”

Q. What kind of problems does Lara present in the ring? How do you prepare for his skill set and what he does well in the ring?

“I’ve been watching Lara for a while. I know he’s a mover. Guys like that are slick and he’s a good counter-puncher. He’s a crafty veteran and has fought a lot of top guys. But I have a lot of experience myself. I’m undefeated and it’s my time.”

Q. What does it mean to you to be part of a tripleheader with the top talent in the division? How important is it to take advantage of this opportunity and put on the best performance possible?

“Being involved in this lets me know where I’m at. Not just anybody got on this card. We earned our way here and this night will open up other big fights in the division. There’s no pressure for me, though. I put in all the hard work at the gym. On fight night, I just let things flow.”

DILMAGHANI AND SKOROKHOD TOP NOV. 11 UNDERCARD IN BRAMPTON

TORONTO, ON—Though Samuel Vargas and Jussi Koivula will square off in the main event on November 11, the undercard at the Brampton Powerade Centre that night will feature headline-caliber talent.

Flanking the Vargas-Koivula WBA-NABA title fight will be a stacked undercard featuring a pair of emerging Lee Baxter Promotions contenders from abroad.

In the co-feature, super featherweight Alex Dilmaghani battles Finland’s Tuomo Eronen. Dilmaghani is fresh off an emphatic victory over Ulises Perez on July 21 in the headline role of a LBP event at the Danforth Music Hall in downtown Toronto. The UK-based sharpshooter displayed improved power and aggressiveness in walking down and stopping the battle-tested Mexican in six rounds.

Dilmaghani has honed his craft all over the world, once fighting under the tutelage of Hall of Famer Nacho Beristain at the Romanza Gym in Mexico City, the same venue that has produced legends such as Ricardo “Finito” Lopez and Juan Manuel Marquez. At one point, he was also guided by former world champion Ricky Hatton, before making his professional home in Canada.

“Alex has learned from the best all over the world, but now he has stability and regularity in his career,” said Baxter. “He may be only a few fights away from challenging for a world title, so every fight is crucial at this point.”

One of Baxter’s newest signees, Stanyslav Skorokhod will fight at the Powrade Centre for the first time as well, as he takes on Fernando Silva in eight round super welterweight action. Skorokhod made his Canadian debut on July 21, smashing veteran Nestor Garcia in just three rounds.

Skorokhod (15-1, 12 KOs) was a competitor in ESPN’s prestigious Boxcino tournament, and had a lengthy and storied amateur career in his homeland, fighting in the same amateur system that has produced Vasyl Lomachenko and Oleksandr Usyk.

“We’re seen what the top Ukrainian amateurs have been able to do in a short period of time as professionals, and I think Stanyslav is capable of that. With a couple more victories, he can be right in the world title picture.” said Baxter.

The undercard will also feature a bevy of Canadian talent, such as super bantamweight prospect Marc Pagcaliwangan, light heavyweight Nick Fantauzzi, welterweight Deepak Tanwar, “Brazilian Bomber” Mayron Vieira Zeferino and women’s star Shelly Barnett.

ABOUT THE EVENT:

Samuel Vargas and Jussi Koivula will battle for the WBA-NABA welterweight title as they headline “For The Fallen,” a Remembrance Day championship boxing event at the Powerade Centre in Brampton, ON, presented by Lee Baxter Promotions.

“It’s important for us to show our honor and respect for our troops, and particularly on Remembrance Day, those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom,” said Lee Baxter. “There’s nobody in Canadian boxing who better embodies the warrior spirit than Samuel Vargas, and I’m sure he’ll make our troops proud.”

Vargas (28-3-1, 14 knockouts) is coming off the biggest victory of his career, a thrilling unanimous decision over three-time world title challenger Ali Funeka in August. The WBA-NABA champion displayed a blend of nuanced boxing skill, and raw aggression that’s made him so popular in the Canadian boxing community. After coming up short against the best welterweights in the world, Errol Spence and Danny Garcia, Vargas has shown that he’s continued to improve as a fighter and is ready for another shot.

Standing in his way is one of Europe’s top welterweights, Jussi Koivula. The Finnish star has challenged for both the European and European Union titles in the past, but a bout with Vargas undoubtedly presents the biggest opportunity of his career.

Koivula (23-4-1, 9 KOs) was introduced to the Toronto audience during TIFF, when a critically acclaimed documentary film about his life “Daddy Loves You,” aired during the festival. Prior to his successes in boxing, Koivula dealt with plenty of tragedy—losing both of his parents, and four members of his family in total to alcohol or drug abuse. Like so many before him, Koivula has found refuge in the sport of boxing.

“Jussi’s story is incredible, and on top of that, he presents a very real challenge for Sam. Both of these guys have overcome tremendous obstacles both in their careers and in life, and a win for either man would be absolutely huge,” said Baxter.

Former national amateur champion Bobby Harris III breaking out of shadow cast by his father with a little help from his friends

WORCESTER, Mass. (October 2, 2017) – Local prospect Bobby “BH3” Harris III is ready to breakout of the shadows cast by his father, retired pro boxer Bobby Harris, starting Saturday night, October 28, in the fourth and final 2017 installment of the popular professional boxing series, “New England’s Future”, at the DCU Center (Exhibition Hall) in Worcester, Massachusetts.

“New England’s Future 4” is presented by Rivera Promotions Entertainment (RPE), which is owned and operated by retired three-time, two division world champion Jose Antonio Rivera and his son, Anthonee (A.J.) Rivera.

“BH3” and A.J. grew-up together in gyms as sons of pro fighters. They had dreams of making it in boxing, which has come to fruition with “BH3” the rising prospect, A.J. the president and matchmaker for RPE. At times, though, what’s transpired may be somewhat surreal for both young men.

“I grew up in boxing,” Bobby Harris III explained. “My father always brought me to the gym and his fights. My uncle, Adam Harris, was also a pro boxer. My father and Jose were super close, me and A.J. grew-up as brothers. The same blood couldn’t make us any closer. It’s me and AJ. My first amateur fight was when I was 13. A.J. used to run and workout with me. I’d go to his house after school and sleep over on weekends. We planned our lives together in boxing; my job is to fight and A.J. promotes and makes matches.”

“I remember growing up with Bobby as my brother,” A.J. added. “We did everything together: ran, trained, sparred and pushed each other to our greatest limits. He’s grown so much over the years. His natural ability, mixed with years of experience, and Bobby growing into a man will surely lead to him being world champion one day. I’m truly proud and excited to see our childhood plan unfold.”

“BH3” only had about 40 amateur matches but the large majority were at the national level. He is a two-time national amateur champion, including a gold-medal performance in the USA National Championships, and as a member of Team USA, he was rated No. 1 in the U.S, and No. 2 in the world.

The 21-year-old decided to turn pro earlier this year, rather than wait for a shot at the Olympics, after discussing his options with his father, as well as Jose and A.J. Rivera, plus his head trainer, Rocky Gonzalez. Worcester boxers such as Jermaine Ortiz and Irvin Gonzalez turning pro, along with the arrival of now 8-month-old Bobby Harris IV, were key factors in his decision to become a professional boxer. “I didn’t want to waste another year,” Bobby admitted. “Turning pro now will get me into rankings earlier. The time was right”

Bobby’s father was a 4-time national amateur champion as a super heavyweight who compiled a 20-2-1 (13 KOs) pro record between 1993 and 1999. Today, he is an important member of his son’s corner, but he did leave a shadow cast over his son, especially across New England.

“People will always compare me with my dad, in the ring, but, as good as he was, it’s a great honor to be his son,” Bobby Harris III remarked. “It’s been nothing but good for me. He trained with fighters like (Oscar) De La Hoya, (Shane) Mosley, (Evander) Holyfield and so many other great fighters. We are different, though. and now I’m establishing my own identity. The sport has changed so much since he fought. Back then it was mostly two guys beating each other up, not as much of a performance. I like to put on a good performance and have people say, ‘He’s cool, and when does he fight again. My dad has told me how different boxing is today compared to when he fought. Now, marketing is so important for fighters, and a lot of exposure is through social media.

“My father was a heavyweight, I’m going to go down to 154 (junior middleweight. He is so much bigger, taller and heavier than I am, so fighting in different weight classes separates us. I’m a different style fighter, too. I’m more active than him. So that people don’t confuse us when talking, I came up with ‘BH3’ as my persona. We are different in and out of the ring.”

“I have known Little Bobby (as I call him) since he was born,” Jose Rivera noted. “He calls me, Tio (uncle) Jose, and I love him like a member of my family. I am happy and proud to see little Bobby go after his dreams and goals his way and on his terms. I wouldn’t want it any other way. My son, A.J., and I are happy that we can use our RPE company to be able to help little Bobby pursue his dreams and goals. Worcester – and soon enough the rest of the world – will know it’s BH3 Time!”

“BH3” turned pro this past June 10, in his Worcester hometown, taking a four-round unanimous decision (40-36 X 3) over an awkward opponent, Rodrigo Almeida, who seemed more interested in survival, often frustrating “BH3” with his constant holding.

“I’m happy with the way that fight went because I learned so much,” Bobby commented. “I was so excited with all the hype about my pro debut, and I was into the crowd trying for the knockout. I learned that I need to take my time, have fun, throw combinations and that the knockout will come. Dad liked to jab, I like to hit and run like ‘Sugar’ Ray (Leonard). My first pro fight wasn’t really me. I’m the matador but I can fight like a bull if the opportunity comes to me. I can change things around but I forgot to have fun in my pro debut.”

“BH3” plans to breakout from his father’s shadow in his Oct. 28th fight against New Yorker Troy Omer “KO Artist” Artis (3-7-1, 2 KOs), contested at a 164-pound catchweight, in a four-round bout.

Former WBU Americans and IBU North American cruiserweight champion Vinnie “American Nightmare” Carita (16-1-1, 15 KOs), fighting out of Pembroke (MA), will face an opponent to be determined in the eight-round main event.

Former UFC heavyweight title challenger Gabriel “Napao” Gonzaga will make his pro boxing debut in a four-round match against Washington D.C. heavyweight Alando Pugh (1-10-1, 1 KO).

The “New England’s Future 4” undercard features many of the best and most popular N.E. fighters, including 2016 N.E. Golden Gloves champion Anthony Laureano (4-0, 2 KOs), a promising welterweight from East Hartford (CT), who faces Clifton Rashad Thames (3-2-1), of Oklahoma City, in a six-round match.

Other undercard fights, all four-rounders, include 2014 N.E. Golden Gloves champion Adrian “Tonka” Sosa (4-0, 3 KOs), fighting out of nearby Lawrence (MA), vs. veteran Norwalk (CT) welterweight Shakha Moore (12-23-3, 2 KOs), New Haven (CT) Edwin Soto (10-2-2, 4 KOs) vs. Anthony Everett (1-6). of Lawrence, at a 150-pounds catch-weight, three-time USA Boxing Nationals champion Elvis Figueroa (2-0, 1 KO), of New Haven (CT), vs. Anthony Bowman (11-63-2, 3 KOs). Richard “Popeye The Sailor Man” Rivera (3-0, 2 KOs), of Hartford (CT), vs. Hansen Castillo (0-2), at a 180-pounds catch-weight, Southbridge (MA) junior welterweight Wilfredo “El Sucaro” Pagan (2-0) vs. Oscar Diaz (0-12), of Hartford, and Danbury (CT) junior welterweight Omar Bordoy, Jr. (2-0) vs. Alan Beeman (0-15), of Providence.

All fights and fighters are subject to change.

(anthoneerivera@gmail.com/774.272.2269) or any of the fighters

Doors open at 6:30 p.m., first bout 7:00 p.m. ET.

Sponsors include Lundgren Honda, Championsofhealth.usna.com, and American Pyramids.

Part of the proceeds will go to Worcester Latino Dollars For Scholars.

It’s going to be another memorable night of action for fans in Yangon and from all over the world. Get ready for some major fireworks!”

Aung La N Sang, ONE Middleweight World Champion, stated: “I am thrilled to be back in the cage this November. As world champion, I will always be proud to represent my home country, and I gladly accept the responsibility of inspiring my countrymen with my time inside the cage. I am truly blessed to be in the position that I am, and I promise to give my best performance yet. Alain Ngalani will be the biggest opponent I have ever competed against, and it is a challenge that I am really excited to take on.”

Alain Ngalani, ONE Superstar, stated: “As a martial artist, we continuously strive to reach the top. Everyone craves success in many forms, and for me, to be part of history is part of my goals. This is a historic matchup that will be talked about for years. I vow to do everything in my power to get the victory, give the fans an exciting show, and go down in the record books as winner of this historic bout. Together with Aung La N Sang, we will put on a thrilling contest.”

32-year-old Aung La N Sang is Myanmar’s most successful athlete in history, whose constricting style has earned him the moniker of ”The Burmese Python”. Born in Myitkyina in the mountainous Kachin State, he belongs to an ethnic minority known as the Kachin. In his most recent outing, Aung La N Sang stunned former champion Vitaly Bigdash of Russia in a highly-anticipated rematch to be crowned the new ONE Middleweight World Champion. Aung La N Sang is set to square off in his toughest challenge yet, against heavyweight behemoth Alain Ngalani.

Heavyweight knockout artist Alain “The Panther” Ngalani, who trains out of Impakt MMA in Hong Kong but is originally from Cameroon, is a terrifying combination of power and speed, and is always looking to end matches early. Owning a 25-7-1, 2 NC kickboxing record which includes 23 knockouts, Ngalani is a heavyweight world champion in Muay Thai and kickboxing. Fresh off his record-setting 11-second KO of former ONE Heavyweight World Title Challenger Hideki Sekine, “The Panther” is set to figure in ONE Championship’s first-ever ‘David vs Goliath’ super bout, as he takes on ONE Middleweight World Champion Aung La N Sang in an open weight contest.

Murat Gassiev: Perez did great – but Briedis is a master of his craft

IBF Cruiserweight World Champion Murat Gassiev is full of praise for both Mairis Briedis and Mike Perez.

Murat Gassiev watched with interest as Mairis Briedis defeated Mike Perez via unanimous decision in the World Boxing Super Series in Riga, Latvia on Saturday night.

And the Russian IBF World Champion is full of praise for both combatants and fellow participants in the Ali Trophy cruiserweight tournament.

“The fight went the distance which is the reason why the fans could say it was boring but it was not,” said ‘Iron’ Murat Gassiev.

“Perez was doing great. His stamina was there. His speed was there. He was motivated. He lost but the fact is now we have a very dangerous fighter in our division. I think he is capable of becoming a mandatory challenger in the near future.”

Murat Gassiev was impressed by WBC world champion Mairis Briedis’ ability to adjust.

“Briedis showed that he is master of his craft. He showed that he is able to adjust to any situation in the ring,” said Gassiev.

“If you try to back him up he has a good defense. If you work from a distance, he is ready too. If you want the inside work with some of Marko Huck’s elements — he’s ready. He’s ready for everything. I think that Briedis’ uppercuts and dirty boxing surprised Perez.”

Murat Gassiev will undoubtedly watch Mairis Briedis again in the upcoming clash against WBO world champion Aleksandr Usyk in the semifinal:

“His fight with Usyk will be very interesting. Those who think that Usyk is going have an easy fight are wrong. I look forward to it, he says.

Murat Gassiev steps into the World Boxing Super Series when he faces off against Krzysztof Wlodarczyk in the final cruiserweight quarterfinal on October 21 at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

The winner will face WBA world champion Yunier Dorticos in a unification fight in the semifinal.

BELLEW VS. HAYE – THE REMATCH AT THE O2

Following the blockbuster battle between Tony Bellew and David Haye earlier this year, the two nemeses will once again go to war in The Rematch at The O2 on Sunday December 17, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

Following a fiery build up, Haye and Bellew met at the Greenwich venue in March this year and served up an explosive encounter which left fans on their edge of their seats. Both fighters went toe to toe for a thrilling 11 round contest. Haye bravely fought on despite fully rupturing his Achilles in the sixth round, Bellew was victorious after Haye’s team eventually threw the towel in.

Without doubt, the night left more questions than it answered. The Rematch is set to finally answer these.

Former Cruiserweight king Bellew has fond memories of fighting on Sunday’s having climbed off the canvas in the opening round to brutally KO Ilunga Makabu in the third round of their WBC World title battle at the home of ‘The Bomber’s’ beloved Everton in May 2016, and the Liverpool ace is confident he can repeat his performance earlier in the year.

“I will have the exact same attitude I had going into the first fight – win at all costs,” said Bellew. “I will be victorious on December 17 and I will end David Haye’s career. Another loss to me closes the curtain on the Hayemaker.

“This isn’t personal anymore, it’s strictly business. This is just another fight. My world has been put into perspective in the last four weeks, it’s been the toughest four weeks of my family’s lives and I will dedicate my victory on December 17 to my late brother-in-law.

“He knows how the first fight went, after five rounds I had him 3-2 up, my plan was never to start strong as David is a front-runner. He’s dangerous early but he tires quickly and he doesn’t get stronger down the stretch.

“He’s another year old, the body is more worn and he won’t be able to live with a younger, fresher and more active fighter, he just can’t sustain the tempo and pace once we go past three or four rounds.

“It’s a very dangerous fight but I am looking forward to it. I love The O2 and I wanted the fight to be there. I call the shots this time.”

After seven months of intensive rehabilitation, two-weight World champion David “The Hayemaker” Haye is looking to wreak revenge on Bellew and prove to any doubters that he is still one of the most dangerous Heavyweights on the planet.

David Haye said: “I’m excited to give the public The Rematch they truly crave, ever since the explosive first showdown earlier this year. On March 4, the script was thrown out the window and the unpredictability of sport revealed itself in its most raw form. Without question ‘The Bomber’ showed great heart, grit and determination to weather the early storm. Credit to him, that he’s willing to step back into the lion’s den and do it all over again.
“He somehow won the lottery in our first fight, but believe me, he won’t win the lottery twice.

“I’ve been training every day for over six months. I already feel fitter, stronger and more athletic than I did for our first showdown! On December 17, I will relish the opportunity to re-write the ending of the Haye Bellew story.”

Bellew’s promoter Eddie Hearn said: “I’m delighted to get this one over the line and give the fans the rematch they want to see. Tony had plenty of options on the table but this was the biggest fight out there and one he wants to end once and for all.

“Tony has continuously been written off through his career and has now become a real fans favourite for always putting it on the line. Many felt the first fight was a miss match, now you know this a pick ‘em fight – if you thought the first one was dramatic then buckle up for December 17.”

Adam Smith, Head of Boxing at Sky Sports said; “This is one of the most eagerly anticipated clashes in recent times as arch rivals Tony Bellew and David Haye lock horns again in a pre-Christmas cracker!”

“It’s a rematch which should provide everything – a fiery build-up, compelling action mixed with an uncertain, unpredictable outcome. Will Bellew be able to dig that deep a second time and prevail as an underdog again? Can Haye’s body hold up, having shaken off any physical and mental scars to surely come in lighter and faster? It’s the ultimate battle – Repeat or Revenge?

“We cannot wait to provide all the twists and turns in and out of the ring on Sky – enjoy the crazy ride!”

Tickets go on sale on Wednesday October 4 at midday to O2 Priority members at www.theO2.co.uk.

BOXING ELITE VASYL LOMACHENKO AND GUILLERMO RIGONDEAUX TO CLASH EXCLUSIVELY LIVE ON BOXNATION

LONDON (29 September) – The battle between two-time Olympic gold medallists Vasyl Lomachenko and Guillermo Rigondeaux on December 9th at Madison Square Garden will be shown exclusively live on BoxNation.

‘The Channel of Champions’ will air the dream matchup featuring two men regarded as boxing’s greatest ever amateurs as part of the channel’s exclusive output deal with promoters Top Rank.

In the paid ranks both fighters have burst onto the scene to dominate their respective divisions and have ambitions of climbing up the pound-for-pound rankings.

36-year-old Rigondeaux is the current WBA super-bantamweight world champion and will be moving up two-weight divisions to challenge for Lomachenko’s WBO super-featherweight world title.

However, there will be more than just a title on the line as both are among boxing’s most skilled fighters, with Rigondeaux having persistently campaigned to get the fight, with the Ukrainian finally obliging as they look to give fans an early Christmas cracker.

Undefeated Rigondeaux has 17 wins on his record and is known for his slickness, defence and accurate counter-punching.

He has found it difficult to land big fights in the past but when he does has a history of causing an upset as he did when he overcame the then golden boy Nonito Donaire via a unanimous points win in 2013.

29-year-old Lomachenko though is a different threat all together, with many in the sport tipping him to dominate for years to come.

He has looked sensational since turning professional in 2013 when he defeated Jose Ramirez by knockout in the 4th round.

Lomachenko then went onto challenge seasoned professional Orlando Salido for the WBO featherweight world title in only his second fight, losing a close split decision.

He has bounced back in spectacular fashion since that and has gone onto become a two-weight world champion already, with his most recent win coming against big-punching Miguel Marriaga who didn’t answer the bell for round 8.

All attention now turns to New York City on December 9th with BoxNation being the only place for UK and Irish fans to watch how this intriguing battle plays out.

Jim McMunn, BoxNation Managing Director, said: “This is certainly one of the most interesting matchups of 2017. Both Vasyl Lomachenko and Guillermo Rigondeaux have outstanding amateurs backgrounds and now as professionals are amongst the very elite. How this fight will unfold is anyone’s guess. The skill set these two possess is unrivalled and solid arguments can be made for either man taking the win. BoxNation has enjoyed another fantastic year in 2017 and what a way to end it with these two supreme talents going at it on December 9th exclusively live on ‘The Channel of Champions’.”

Also as part of BoxNation’s Top Rank output deal the channel will show two undefeated rising stars in action when hard-hitting Jessie Magdaleno defends his WBO super-bantamweight world title against Cesar Juarez live on 11th November, with Russian knockout artist Artur Beterbiev taking on Enrico Koelling for the vacant IBF light-heavyweight title.
