HYLAND JNR CLASHES WITH ORMOND IN BELFAST

Paul Hyland Jnr will defend his IBF European Lightweight title against Stephen Ormond at the SSE Arena Belfast on October 21, live on Sky Sports.

Hyland Jnr landed the title in impressive fashion in his tenth pro outing in June, stopping Adam Dingsdale in the opening round at the Arena and he makes his first defence against Dubliner Ormond, who hopes to mark his tenth title fight in style with a big win in front of the Sky cameras.

‘Hylo’ moved to 16-0 with his blitz of Dingsdale and the 27 year old believes another stand out win over ‘The Rock’ will put him right in the mix for more big title fights this season.

“I’m looking forward to defending my belt, it’s a brilliant match-up,” said Hyland. “I’m the champion, I’m undefeated and confident this belt will be staying in my hands.

“It’s two of the best Lightweights over here going head-to-head, both of us don’t like being pushed back so I think we can expect fireworks and the winner will be on the doorstep of major belts going forward.”

Hyland’s clash with Ormond is part of an historic night of boxing in Belfast as Ryan Burnett puts his IBF World Bantamweight title on the line against WBA king Zhanat Zhakiyanov in the first ever unification bout to be held in Northern Ireland.

PIGFORD AIMING FOR ANOTHER COPPER BOX KO

Hammer-fisted Southampton Super-Welterweight Joe Pigford is gunning for another knockout when he takes on Scotland’s Kieran Smith for the Vacant WBO European strap at the Copper Box Arena on September 16, live on BT Sport and BoxNation.

Undefeated Pigford flattened Aarron Morgan last time out with a brutal right-left that saw the Barking man crumple awkwardly to the canvas in the fifth and now he is determined to steal the show again next month with an explosive performance.

“Boxing fans love to see knockouts and I’m more than happy to deliver them,” said Pigford. “I’ve stopped 12 of my 13 opponents and everyone always tells me I have the second best KO record in the country behind Heavyweight Champion Anthony Joshua – it doesn’t mean much but it looks good!

“I’ve got the knockout every time I’ve fought at the Copper Box and I’ll make it three from three on September 16 in front of the BT Sport and BoxNation cameras. I’m looking forward to showing the fans a few things we have been working on in the gym.

“People look at my record and think I’m just a brawler that loves a tear-up. When I need to, I know I can box really well. Some people question my defence but I’ve sparred with some of the top names in the country and I know I can mix it with the best.”

Currently ranked as the third best 11st fighter in the country behind Frank Warren stablemates Liam Smith and Liam Williams, Pigford knows securing the WBO European belt would propel him into the organisation’s World rankings and towards future blockbuster battles.

“Winning that belt would open up a lot of doors for me so it really is a must win fight,” said Pigford. “There’s a lot on the line and I’ll be coming into the fight 100% prepared for whatever Smith throws at me. I’ve had a little look at him online and he’s 10-0 so it should be a good test for me.

“I’ll be bringing along a good crowd of my lot up from Southampton and they are guaranteed to make a racket like they always do. My dream has always been to win titles and on September 16 I’ll win what will hopefully be the first of many.”

WBO Middleweight World Champion Billy Joe Saunders makes the second defence of his crown against Willie Monroe Jr in the evening’s main event; Ilford Light-Heavy powerhouse Anthony Yarde faces Rya Ford for the Vacant WBO Inter-Continental Title; teenage Heavyweight sensation Daniel Dubois takes on AJ Carter for the Vacant Southern Area strap in only his fifth contest; knockout artist Joe Pigford takes on Kieran Smith for the Vacant WBO European Super-Welterweight title.

Some of the very best up-and-coming prospects in the country including Welling Super-Featherweight Archie Sharp; Ilford Super-Bantamweight Lucien Reid; Fulham Super-Middleweight Zak Chelli and Erith Flyweight Jake Pettit feature. Ilford Welterweight Hamza Sheeraz; Tamworth Light-Heavyweight Ryan Hatton and Ilford Super-Middleweight Umar Sadiq all make their highly-anticipated pro debuts.

Tickets for September 16th priced at £40, £50, £70, £100, £150, £200 and £250 (VIP/Hospitality) are available from:

LOS ANGELES (August 21, 2017) Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs), the only four-division world champion in Puerto Rico’s rich boxing history, and 154-pound contender Yoshihiro “El Maestrito” Kamegai (27-3-2, 24 KOs) hosted an international media conference call ahead of their 12-round fight for the vacant WBO Junior Middleweight title. The fight will take place on Saturday, Aug. 26 at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. and televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing® beginning at 9:45 p.m. ET/PT.

Here is what Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions Oscar De La Hoya, Miguel Cotto, and Yoshihiro Kamegai said during today’s international media conference call:

OSCAR DE LA HOYA, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions: Thank you very much for joining us today in this international media conference call for the Cotto versus Kamegai which will take place this Saturday, August 26th. Future Hall of Famer and Puerto Rico’s first four-division world champion, Miguel Cotto, will make his long-awaited return to the ring at the StubHub Center here in Carson, California, to take on one of the division’s rising stars, Yoshihiro Kamegai.

Today you’ll hear from both fighters themselves, Cotto and Kamegai, as they close training camp and begin fight week. The 12-round match-up for the vacant WBO Junior Middleweight title has all the makings of an action-packed fight. It will be the best boxing match taking place in the country on August 26th, mark my words.

Tickets for Cotto versus Kamegai are nearly sold out and are priced at $200, 150 and 25. At this point, I would like to thank our partners at HBO. We are very proud that Cotto versus Kamegai will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing.

Obviously, as you all know, HBO is one of the best broadcast partners in boxing today, so if you can’t make it live, in person at the StubHub Center, you can watch it live on HBO. The telecast will begin at 9:45 p.m. Eastern/Pacific Time. You can also watch the undercards which will be streamed live on ringtv.com beginning at 4:45 p.m. Eastern Time.

I would also like to thank our sponsors, Tecate Born Bold and Casa Mexico Tequila, who have been in our corner throughout the years.

So now at this moment I’d like to — it is my pleasure to introduce to you one of the most entertaining junior middleweight contenders in the division today. He hails from Japan. He’s been involved in numerous memorable battles and Fighter of the Year candidate against Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero. He’s had some amazing back-to-back brawls against Jesus Soto Karass. This fight here is the one fight that he’s surely motivated and ready to step back into the ring on August 26th and give you guys a tremendous, tremendous show.

So it is my pleasure to introduce to you with a record of 27, 3 losses, and 24 knockouts, I give you Yoshihiro “El Maestrito” Kamegai.

YOSHIHIRO “EL MAESTRITO” KAMEGAI, Super Welterweight Contender: I had the best camp ever, and I’m honored to be fighting the famous Miguel Cotto. And I look forward to being on HBO again and having a great fight. I’m all prepared to put on a great, entertaining fight.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: Miguel, can we have you say a few words?

MIGUEL COTTO, Four-Division World Champion: Yes, I’m happy to be here. I’m happy to be back. And all I have to say is I had a great time at camp and it’s great to be back and in this fight.

Q. Hi there, Miguel. How are you today?

MIGUEL COTTO: Good. How are you?

Q. Doing good. My first question is I know you have said a few different times that you will fight this fight with Kamegai and then you will finish your career in the boxing ring at the end of this year, December, I believe. I’m wondering if you could explain or discuss the reasons why you are so set on ending your boxing career at the end of this year.

MIGUEL COTTO: I think that 16 years is enough, and I have other things to do in my life. You know, I’m taking care of my family better, and that is the biggest and only reason that I have to stop boxing and quit boxing and retire after December 31st this year.

Q. So you’ll go and you’ll have your fight with Kamegai on Saturday, and then you’ll have one more fight after that. So my question is what would you like — in your grand finale of a career that’s going to obviously put you in the Hall of Fame someday, what kind of accomplishment or what kind of magnitude or what kind of event would you like to have for your final fight? Not to look past Saturday, but if you’re going to fight one more time, win or lose, what kind of fight would you like for that last night? There’s been things thrown out, maybe Lemieux, maybe a rematch with Canelo Alvarez, but what are you looking to do in your last fight?

MIGUEL COTTO: First of all, I have to just think about Kamegai, and then we are going to do what we always do, you know? Then we’re going to pick and choose the best challenger out there, and we are going to face him.

Q. Is that going to be at 154 or 160?

MIGUEL COTTO: I don’t know, you know. We’re going to discuss that with my guys, with all our people, and we’re going to get our decision.

Q. With this fight coming up on Saturday against Kamegai, you’re going to be getting an opportunity to fight for another world title. You’ve won a bunch of them already in your career. You’ve fought so many top-notch opponents. I’m wondering, as you think back and the 16-year great career that you’ve had, could you identify what you believe to be your greatest performance and your biggest win and why?

MIGUEL COTTO: I enjoyed my whole career. I believe that if anything from the beginning didn’t happen in my career, I wouldn’t have the career that I’ve had. You know, I’ve enjoyed my whole career, and I don’t want to point to any opponent, to any fight. I think that my whole career has been great for world boxing.

Q. Favorite win, like maybe the rematch with Margarito or your victory against Shane Mosley or Zab Judah or some of the bigger wins you’ve had?

MIGUEL COTTO: You know, I enjoy everything. The victory against Mosley, the rematch against Margarito, but at the end of the road, I’m really proud of the kind of career that I’ve had.

Q. Obviously, your fight, from what they said, nearly sold out at the StubHub Center. You’re going to be live on HBO, but obviously, everybody knows there’s another big event happening this weekend between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor. Do you feel in any way overshadowed by the hoopla surrounding that fight, where sometimes the attention may be thrown towards the Miguel Cotto fight instead, and your thoughts on that situation?

MIGUEL COTTO: I arrived here in L.A. at the beginning of July to start my training time. I’ve only come here with one thing on my mind, and that’s just getting ready for Kamegai. And I’ve been doing a great job here in L.A., and I have no time and no space in my mind to think about another thing, you know?

I’m just ready for Kamegai. I’m just thinking about the Kamegai fight, and whatever or whoever has another fight on the same day, they have to think about their fight.

Q. Miguel, this is your first fight in nearly two years. That brings you a lot of pressure once stepping into the ring?

MIGUEL COTTO: I’m just taking my time off to be with my family, to do things that I want to do. And as soon as I got here in L.A., my mind goes back to boxing. And I’ve been training hard.

Q. Do you feel ready? You said earlier that you feel more mature because of the time that you’ve had off the ring. Is that going to be a difference in this fight on Saturday?

MIGUEL COTTO: I’ve been here doing whatever Freddie wants me to do. Just preparing for the fight plan for Kamegai on the 26th, and that’s all I’ve been doing here, you know? I’ve been doing the best of me, bringing the best of me every day, and that’s all I can say.

Q. Miguel, I’m wondering, do you think there is a possibility that you would continue your career if you scored some big win in December? I know you go for big challenges. Is there anything that could persuade you to stay?

MIGUEL COTTO: No. The decision is already made. I’m leaving on December 31st, no matter what happens with my career.

Q. I know you’ve been off for almost two years, but I know you also had the camp of Kirkland. Do you think that that makes sure that you won’t have as much ring rust as you might usually have since you’ve had another camp this year?

MIGUEL COTTO: No, I just took my time off to be with my family and heal whatever I have to heal in my body. I arrived here all ready to train, and that’s what we’re doing here, just training, training, training for Kamegai.

Q. Kamegai has been in a lot of excellent wars. Do you expect another one of those Saturday?

MIGUEL COTTO: I’m going to do my fight. I’m going to do my fight that Freddie and I planned here to do on Saturday, and let’s see what Kamegai’s going to bring on Saturday.

Q. I believe this is your first fight at the StubHub Center. Are you looking forward to it? And what do you think it will be like for you?

MIGUEL COTTO: The people from L.A. always treat me really good. I know that the tickets are going — selling in a really good way. And I know that’s going to be a special night for everybody in the boxing community here in L.A.

Q. This is for both fighters. You both come from countries with a very proud, strong boxing tradition. Do you feel that responsibility to represent your home countries in that way?

MIGUEL COTTO: I’m always here to bring my best, to do my best, to do whatever it takes to get the victory and make my family and the people around me and myself better. I’m coming with the same kind of mindset, and I’m going to do my best on August 26th.

Q. I’d also like Yoshihiro to answer that question if he’s still on the line.

YOSHIHIRO KAMEGAI: Yes, I am from Japan. We’re different race, from a different country, but at the end of the day I’m here to give the fans what they’re looking for. There are people that obviously root for Miguel and also some people that root for me as well. So I’m just here to put on an entertaining fight.

Q. I have one final question for Miguel. You just had a very successful promotion under your new banner. Are you looking forward to that next stage in your boxing career? Do you think it gives you an advantage having been in the ring so long to be able to visit young fighters under your banner as a promoter?

MIGUEL COTTO: I’m just trying to return to boxing what I got from boxing, you know? I want to give boxers what boxing gave to me in my career. That’s all I have on my mind. I want to help them. I want to bring their opportunities to show their skills in boxing, and that’s all I wanted to do with boxing.

Q. Yoshihiro, you don’t really look like a boxer. You look more like an actor or a model or something. How did you get into boxing? Was that always what you wanted to do when you were young?

YOSHIHIRO KAMEGAI: I think I was 13 when I decided that I wanted to box. I don’t remember what I wanted before, but I was 13 when I decided that I wanted to box.

Q. Has your style changed over the years, or did it change when you came to fight in the United States? Or have you always had the same fighting style?

YOSHIHIRO KAMEGAI: It changes when I came to the States. In Japan I was more of a technical fighter with good defense. I was aggressive, but I was known for my defenses. But coming to the States, I knew to win here I had to be more aggressive and be not so technical but a more aggressive fighter.

Q. What has been your impression of fighting here in the United States? What’s been your impression of the whole atmosphere, the whole fighting scene?

YOSHIHIRO KAMEGAI: When I fight in the United States, I’m much more motivated. Especially with the reaction from the fans and the crowd. I feel that I enjoy fighting here, and it’s probably the best platform to be fighting at.

Q. Yoshihiro, a lot has been made of Miguel Cotto’s time off, 20 months or so, but you’ve been out of the ring since your rematch win over Jesus Soto Karass. Were you waiting on a big fight like this before returning, or did you have other things going on that just fell through?

YOSHIHIRO KAMEGAI: Yes, pretty much, I was told that the fight was in the works back in March. It got extended a little bit. But I was hopeful that this would materialize, so, yes, I was waiting for a big fight like this.

Q. And I wanted to ask you if there was any different training at 154 pounds than when he was fighting at welterweight? Was there less pressure to make weight in training camp?

YOSHIHIRO KAMEGAI: Yes, going up in weight was easier for me to get in better condition. I think that I felt I had better speed and I had more strength.

Q. Miguel, my question for you is that you’re insisting that you’re going to retire at the end of this year, and you’re a shoo-in for the Hall of Fame. My question for you is what do you feel like you still have to accomplish in boxing that made you want to come back? Because it feels like you’ve accomplished everything already.

MIGUEL COTTO: All I want to do is finish my career in the best way possible. That’s the reason that I’ve been working hard at this stage of my career. And all I want for me is to finish this in the best way possible.

Q. Since you fought Canelo in the past, and he’s fighting Golovkin in less than 30 days, can you give a breakdown of the fight, your prediction?

MIGUEL COTTO: Of what fight?

Q. I’m sorry, Canelo versus Golovkin, your opinion on the fight.

MIGUEL COTTO: I have no opinions. I’m really busy doing my work here in L.A. for Yoshihiro Kamegai, and I have nothing to think about of thinking about the Canelo and Golovkin. That’s their own fight, and they have to think about that.

Q. Miguel, at this juncture of your career, why did you decide to start with Golden Boy and have them promote your last two fights as a professional, given the fact that you’ve left Roc Nation, you had relationships with other promoters throughout the years? Why was Golden Boy a good fit for you at this juncture in your career?

MIGUEL COTTO: The relationship between us has always been a good one, you know? Really professional between us. And the way we are feeling with them is the way it has to be, you know? His company is working really good and invest with us and decide with us, and we are happy to be here again.

Q. Miguel, you’ve obviously had a long, successful career with a bunch of big fights. As soon as you win this fight, has there been any consideration to have your last fight in Puerto Rico? I know that’s part of the reason why you signed with Oscar and Golden Boy was to help promote boxing in your island which has a very proud tradition. Any consideration for having your final fight in Puerto Rico?

MIGUEL COTTO: We are going to do the next fight in the place that is the smartest place to do it. I don’t know. I didn’t have this communication with Golden Boy yet, but we are going to have news soon.

Q. Question for Kamegai. Obviously, all the attention has gone to Miguel Cotto for this fight, he’s the star, been established for a long time. Do you feel disrespected in any way as if there’s a foregone conclusion that Miguel is going to win the fight and that you’re just merely a stepping stone in this event?

YOSHIHIRO KAMEGAI: I’m the fighter that’s actually fighting, and I can’t tell you what other people are thinking. So it’s probably a question for them more than for me.

Q. Miguel, last question for you. Assuming you win this fight, I know you’ve said several times on this call that December 31st is your last fight, you’ve been known to be a part of big fights, so are we correct to assume that your final fight will be against someone very popular and that all the fans know?

MIGUEL COTTO: We are going to do the fight with whichever is going to be the best option on the table.

Q. Miguel, what if — after your retirement, there are many who think that this is the end of an era, of a very important era in Puerto Rican boxing. Puerto Rican boxers are not having the same success they’ve had over the course of history. What do you think is the state right now of Puerto Rican boxing, and what do you think the future will be after you retire, considering that you’re going to keep working with the Puerto Rican talent?

MIGUEL COTTO: You know, the future of boxing is whatever we want it to be. We have to work hard and make them believe, make them work hard, as you have to work for boxing, and the whole world is in the hands of every Puerto Rican.

Q. Do you think there is a major problem, a specific problem in Puerto Rican boxing right now that the industry must tend to?

MIGUEL COTTO: I don’t know, you know. All I can talk about is about my career. I can talk about my company. I can’t say that we have a problem in Puerto Rico because I don’t really know, you know.

Storylines abound as CES Boxing preps for live fight card Saturday just hours before Mayweather-McGregor

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Aug. 21st, 2017) — With less than a week to go before the most talked-about boxing match in years takes center stage in Nevada, longtime promotion CES Boxing is set to deliver its own memorable night of boxing with some familiar faces and a few newcomers looking to build their legacies in the footsteps of some of New England’s brightest stars.

CES Boxing’s live event begins 6 p.m. ET Saturday, Aug. 26th, 2017at Foxwoods Resort Casino’s The Premier Ballroom, just hours before pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather and MMA icon Conor McGregor go toe-to-toe in Vegas in the most publicized crossover bout in combat sports history.

The live event, featuring seven action-packed bouts, is available to stream for free on Facebook via FIGHTNIGHT LIVE. All fans who purchase a ticket to the event receive free entry next door at the Grand Theater for the exclusive Pay Per View showing of Mayweather-McGregor.

Tickets are priced at $55, $90, $155 and $325 and can be purchased online at www.cesboxing.com, www.foxwoods.com, or www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 401-724-2253 or 800-200-2882 or at the Grand Theater Box Office. All $55, $90 and $155 tickets offer buyers a reserved ticket to the Mayweather-McGregor PPV. A $325 ticket purchase includes preferred seating. All bouts are subject to change.

Tickets for the closed-circuit event only can be purchased online at www.foxwoods.com, by phone at 800-200-2882 or through any Ticketmaster location.

The 10-round main event speaks for itself: New Haven, Conn., vet Jimmy Williams (13-0-1, 5 KOs), the reigning World Boxing Council U.S. Boxing Council (WBC USNBC) welterweight champion, making his first title defense in his home state against 22-fight vet Issouf Kinda (18-4, 7 KOs) of the Bronx, easily the toughest test of his career.

Williams, 30, is a full-time truancy officer for the West Haven school department. Born in New Jersey, he played college football at Southern Connecticut State and was invited to try out for several NFL teams, but a groin injury derailed his dreams of playing professionally. While attending school, his mother was found strangled to death behind an abandoned building. Her murder remains a mystery to this day.

The death of his mother has always been a source of motivation for Williams. On Saturday, he also fights in honor of the late Ben Callahan, a 10-year-old boy from nearby Branford who drowned a month ago while swimming with his two brothers in the Branford River. Williams had a strong bond with Ben, whose father is a trainer at the gym where Williams works on his strength and conditioning.

On Saturday, CES Boxing will honor Ben with a moment of silence. All fans who purchased tickets from Williams will wear a lighted lanyard that will help illuminate The Premier Ballroom as Williams makes his way to the ring alongside Ben’s surviving brothers.

The fight itself will be a war. Kinda, now 29, is taking a major leap moving up from the 140-pound weight class to the welterweight division to challenge for the prestigious WBC USNBC title. Since capturing the belt in April, Williams has jumped up to No. 12 in the North American Boxing Federation (NABF) rankings, so the reality is the winner of this fight puts himself in line for a major title shot down the road.

Born in West Africa, Kinda dreamed of competing in the 2008 Olympics, but when that plan fell through, he decided boxing professionally was the fastest route to success, so he immigrated to New York in 2007 without a dollar in his pocket, unable to speak a word of English.

He eventually taught himself the language, found a gym where he could hone his skills and turned pro in 2009, winning his first 15 fights. Even as a professional boxer, he worked full-time at a soul food restaurant in Harlem, making just enough to support himself and his family back home in Africa. Kinda defines the American dream. Both fighters have a lot at stake Saturday night.

Since this night is all about boxing versus mixed martial arts, CES Boxing decided to provide fans with its own slice of Mayweather-McGregor with a cruiserweight bout between Hartford native Richard Rivera (2-0, 2 KOs) and 27-fight MMA veteran Leandro Silva of Sao Paolo, Brazil, who makes his professional boxing debut.

Rivera is off to a fast start as a pro with knockout wins in each of his first two bouts. Nicknamed “Popeye The Sailorman,” Rivera enjoyed a stellar amateur career, competing in the U.S. Olympic trials and boasting wins over some of the top amateurs in the country. Saturday is a unique challenge as he faces the versatile Silva, who boasts a 20-6-1 record in MMA, including eight fights with the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC). Silva recently starred on UFC Fight Night 93 in Germany and has also fought in Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, England and the United States.

This is an intriguing fight that pits boxing versus MMA and could perhaps serve as a preview for what’s to come later in the night in Nevada.

Also on Saturday, New Bedford, Mass., standout amateur Jarel Pemberton will make his professional debut on the undercard. That name should sound familiar; Jarel Pemberton is the son of former regional icon “Sandman” Scott Pemberton, a veteran of many noteworthy fights at Foxwoods during the last quarter century.

Those who’ve followed boxing through the years remember Pemberton’s two epic battles at Foxwoods against Omar Sheika in 2003 and 2004, both of which were named ESPN’s Fight of the Year. Pemberton won the first bout by split decision, then knocked out Sheika in the 10th round of their rematch a year later to retain his IBU and NABF super middleweight titles.

The younger Pemberton, now 25, naturally gravitated toward boxing while growing up under his father’s guidance, but before he ever stepped foot in the ring as an amateur, he served two tours in Afghanistan as a lance corporal in the U.S. Marines. He was a machine gunner in the infantry and was also a three-sport athlete at Dartmouth High.

With his father having fought so many memorable bouts at Foxwoods, it’s only fitting the next generation of the Pemberton fighting family makes his professional debut at Foxwoods during its 25th anniversary. Pemberton faces Nate Schulte (0-2) of Woburn, Mass., in a four-round super middleweight bout.

One of the more intriguing bouts on the undercard is a six-round battle between regional unbeaten junior welterweights Cristobal Marrero (4-0, 2 KOs) of New London, Conn., and Miguel Ortiz (2-0, 1 KO) of Springfield, Mass. This is a rare battle between two young fighters willing to put their unbeaten records on the line against one another at such an early stage in their careers.

Marrero, who fought as an amateur in Puerto Rico and Worcester, Mass., enters at 4-0, having stepped up the level of competition in each of his fights. He’s coming off a hard-fought win over New York veteran Sidney Maccow in April, his toughest test to date.

Ortiz is as tough as they come; just two fights into his career, he’s already challenging the best in his weight class in New England. He almost didn’t make it this far as he was forced to pick himself up off the canvas in his pro debut last September against Marqus Bates, only to score the knockout moments later in the opening round. The fearless Ortiz then took on 2-0 Jonathan Figueroa in April, sent him to the canvas midway through the bout and earned the win on the scorecards.

There is no love lost between these two; this fight was originally scheduled for June, but Ortiz sustained an injury in camp. Now Foxwoods will provide the backdrop for what should be one of the top fights of the year in the New England circuit.

The Foxwoods debut of Juiseppe Angelo Cusumano (11-1, 9 KOs), a.k.a. “Rocky,” of Carini, Sicily, is another interesting storyline. With the Klitschkos no longer commandeering all the world titles, the heavyweight division is up for grabs.

Cusumano is coming into his own at the perfect time. The 29-year-old slugger boasts an 11-1 record with nine knockouts and fights on Saturday night for the second time since June as he continues to make a rapid rise to the top of the weight class.

Cusumano idolized the great Rocky Marciano growing up and has adopted the nickname as a pro, big shoes to fill, but nothing the 6-foot-4 Sicilian heavyweight can’t handle. Cusumano faces 28-fight vet Robert Dunton (11-16-1, 6 KOs) of Columbia, S.C., in a six-round bout.

One of the top New England amateurs of this generation, Worcester’s Jamaine Ortiz (4-0, 3 KOs) will also be featured on this card. Ortiz defeated everyone in his path as an amateur and competed in the Olympic Trials in Reno in 2016. He’s now 4-0 as a pro with impressive wins over unbeaten foes Glenn Mitchell and Canton Miller. Ortiz is also a member of the Carpenter’s Local 107 union in Worcester.

Also from Hartford, junior middleweight Jose Rivera (3-1, 3 KOs) returns to action in a four-round bout against Corwin Farmer (1-1) of Tarboro, N.C. The impressive Rivera has won each of his bouts by knockout while Farmer is coming off his professional win in January, an upset over previously unbeaten seven-fight vet Paul Holley in Georgia.

Marcos Hernandez Training Camp Quotes

RIVERSIDE, CA. (August 21, 2017) – Middleweight prospect Marcos “Madman” Hernandez (9-1, 1 KO) is scheduled to face Kevin Newman II (7-0-1), this Saturday on the Mayweather vs. McGregor undercard. The 6-rounder, will serve as the swing bout for the preliminaries on FOX and FOX Deportes. Prelims on FOX and FOX Deportes begin at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT and leads directly into the Mayweather vs. McGregor event that will be produced and distributed by SHOWTIME PPV beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

Marcos Hernandez gives his thoughts on training camp, his upcoming showdown with Newman, and more.

On his current training camp with new trainer Henry Ramierz…
“This time around I was in better shape entering camp. I’ve brought on Henry Ramierz as the lead trainer in my corner and we are working great together. Riverside, California, has been home for me for the last five weeks. Ramierz had me go back to working on the fundamentals of boxing. He’s not trying to change my style, he’s just letting me be myself, while working on some of my weaknesses. My dad Joseph will still be with me working my corner. He knows me best and I will always have him by my side when I fight. It’s been a very productive training camp to say the least.

On his matchup with Kevin Newman II…
“I know I’m facing a tough undefeated fighter in Newman, so my preparation is at an all-time high. Henry and I are focused on his tendencies, and we see some flaws that we feel we can exploit. It will be an exciting fight for the fans, that I can guarantee.

On moving up to the contracted weight of 163 lbs. …
“I’ve never fought above the middleweight division. This will be my first time fighting this heavy at 163 pounds. Personally, I feel it’s going to a good thing for me to fight at this weight. I’m 6’1, so making 154 pounds was getting tough. I feel I can still make that weight but right now I’m right on weight and my body feels fantastic.

On rebounding from his first defeat…
“Going into this training camp, I feel a lot better. Right now, I feel my back is against the wall, so I’m going to give it my all when I step into the ring this Saturday. Looking back, I know I could have done better. Losing my first bout really has me motivated going into this fight.

On fighting in one of the biggest events in boxing history…
“I’m extremely excited to be fighting on a card that will be shown to millions around the world. It’s not everyday you get this type of opportunity. With the world watching, I’m going to leave everything in the ring on fight night. I’m going to show the world that I have what it takes to become an elite fighter.

MARTIN NGUYEN CROWNED NEW ONE FEATHERWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION WITH KNOCKOUT OF MARAT GAFUROV

18 August 2017 – Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: The largest sports media property in Asian history, ONE Championship™ (ONE), once again electrified the iconic Stadium Negara in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with another evening of authentic world-class martial arts action. ONE: QUEST FOR GREATNESS delivered a series of compelling bouts, performed by the absolute best in local and international martial arts talent. In the main event, Martin “The Situ-Asian” Nguyen shocked the world by stopping Marat “Cobra” Gafurov in their rematch to become the new ONE Featherweight World Champion.

In the main event of ONE: QUEST FOR GREATNESS, Martin “The Situ-Asian” Nguyen of Australia completed his journey through ONE Championship’s featherweight ranks by upsetting previously-unbeaten Russian champion Marat “Cobra” Gafurov via knockout within two rounds to clinch the highly-coveted ONE Featherweight World Championship. Gafurov dominated the first round with his magnificent grappling arsenal, but Nguyen found his groove in the second frame as he tore apart his Russian foe with his striking. Recognizing an opening, Nguyen countered Gafurov’s jab with an overhand right that knocked out the now former champion at the center of the ONE Championship cage. Nguyen’s remarkable conquest of Gafurov earned him the “GoDaddy Knockout of the Night” award.

Martin Nguyen, newly crowned ONE Featherweight World Champion, stated: “I just want to dedicate this fight, not only to Malaysia for being so welcoming and having such a beautiful country. This is for my dad. He was my inspiration for the whole camp when I mentally broke. (He and) the boys kept me together. I’ve got a deadly overhand right, but it’s not my only weapon. Thank you to Marat [Gafurov] for giving me the opportunity.”

In the co-main event of the evening, former world title challenger Ev “E.T.” Ting of Malaysia placed his name back in the winner’s column by overwhelming Japanese veteran and former ONE Welterweight World Champion Nobutatsu Suzuki to win by devastating technical knockout. From the opening bell, Ting paced himself well, keeping Suzuki at range with his accurate striking before executing the end sequence. After staggering Suzuki with a combination, Ting swarmed his opponent to score the referee stoppage.

22-year-old Agilan “The Alligator” Thani of Malaysia authored one of the most dominant performances of the night, placing himself back on the winning track with a unanimous decision victory over Sherif “The Shark” Mohamed of Egypt. Showing off new skills and techniques that he learned from training with the world-famous Team Quest, Thani swamped Mohamed with his wrestling while stifling his opponent with submission attempts. The former world title challenger finished the three-round welterweight contest on a strong note, delivering crisp ground strikes to the delight of his roaring countrymen.

Filipino knockout artist Kevin “The Silencer” Belingon completed yet another scintillating finish, his second in a row, by defeating Australian submission specialist Reece “Lightning” McLaren by knockout. Belingon finished the job in just 62 seconds, dropping his Australian opponent with a hard right straight before punctuating with follow-up strikes on the ground to compel referee Olivier Coste to step in and halt the contest. The revered Team Lakay veteran recorded his seventh knockout win as a professional with the impressive triumph over McLaren.

In a clash of high-caliber flyweights, Malaysia’s Gianni Subba captured a hard-earned victory in front of a jubilant hometown crowd by routing Japan’s Riku “The Outsider” Shibuya. Subba showcased his pinpoint accurate striking early on, peppering Shibuya with stinging right hands and spinning back-kicks in the first round. Although Shibuya easily converted his takedown attempts in the succeeding rounds to avoid striking exchanges, Subba kept himself active on the canvas, fishing for submissions while landing the more telling blows. In the end, Subba’s efforts were rewarded with a unanimous decision.

“Mighty” May Ooi of Singapore scored a major victory in her ONE Championship debut by submitting Malaysian female martial arts superstar Ann “Athena” Osman in the first round. After surviving a huge right hand from Osman, Ooi took matters to the canvas, where she maneuvered her cage counterpart with ease courtesy of her impeccable ground game. The 41-year-old Singaporean executed a flawless transition into a rear-naked choke that left Osman no choice but to tap out.

Former ONE Strawweight World Champion Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke of Thailand brushed off a lackluster start to topple Robin “The Ilonggo” Catalan of the Philippines via second-round technical knockout. Showcasing tremendous power with every strike and drawing cheers from the crowd after each landed blow, Dejdamrong’s thunderous knees proved too much for Catalan as the Filipino lost his footing, forcing the referee to wave it off and award the victory to the celebrated Thai kickboxer.

Christian “The Warrior” Lee of Singapore exhibited stellar form, proving himself a top featherweight contender in ONE Championship by scoring an impressive submission over Malaysia’s Keanu Subba. Both highly-touted prospects started out aggressively, but it was Lee who showed a more capable set of grappling skills. Lee spun a web of crafty grappling to overwhelm Subba as the 19-year-old Singaporean standout was able to get the submission finish in the third round, making Subba tap from a wrenching armbar.

Emilio “The Honey Badger” Urrutia of the United States made a triumphant promotional debut in ONE Championship by edging out Team Lakay stalwart Edward “The Ferocious” Kelly of the Philippines in their three-round featherweight encounter. Urrutia relied on his solid ground game to pacify his Filipino opponent’s firepower in the stand-up trade, wearing down Kelly and steering him to a decisive victory by way of unanimous decision.

Kicking off ONE: QUEST FOR GREATNESS was a strawweight encounter between wushu practitioner Rene Catalan of the Philippines and Chinese grappling prodigy Bu Huo You Ga. After dropping his opponent with a clean left straight in first round, Catalan secured top control and went to work. With a dominant top game, Catalan notched his third straight victory, defeating Bu Huo as all three judges saw the bout in favor of Catalan to win by unanimous decision.

VICTORY BOXING RETURNS TO PHILADELPHIA WITH PHILLY STRONG

PHILADELPHIA – August 18, 2017 – Victory Boxing Promotions has found a new home in Philadelphia. The growing promotional outfit will make its return to the City of Brotherly love, and re-launch its Philly Strong series at the 23rd Street Armory in Rittenhouse Square, Philadelphia on October 21st.

The card will be headlined by Jaron “Boots” Ennis (14-0, 12KO), who has racked up an impressive six wins in 2017 alone. It was recently announced that Ennis, who is trained by his father Bozy Ennis, and managed by mega-manager Cameron Dunkin, will be honored at Philadelphia’s Briscoe Awards for the third time. He will take home 2016 Rookie of the Year honors, just days before he steps into the ring in front of his home town for the first time since June. After stopping veteran Wilfredo Acuna in the first round in that fight, Ennis has fought twice more – once in Durham, North Carolina, and once in Washington D.C.

“Without question, Boots is one of the best young fighters in the country,” said Victory Boxing Promotions Founder and Promoter, Chris Middendorf. “We have kept him extremely busy, fighting him 14 times since his debut on April 30th last year. We have done this because of his skills, and his rapid development. He has impressed each time we’ve put a challenge in front of him. We are considering several opponents for him for October 21st, all of whom will be solid tests.” Middendorf added that Boots would be fighting at least once more before October 21st.

Several other Victory Boxing prospects will showcase their talents that evening at 23rd Street Armory, including Adam Daranyi (12-0, 11KO), who was a standout amateur and national champion in his home country of Canada. Korean-Mexican sensation and former amateur standout Brandun Lee (5-0, 4KO), who is coming off a 2nd round knockout win in DC last weekend, will fight at Philly Strong, and local favorite Joshua Jones (4-0-1, 2KO) will don his gloves in front of his home crowd. All three fighters are also managed by Cameron Dunkin, who has managed 34 champions in his 30+ years in the boxing business.

“We are very excited to re-launch Philly Strong at the 23rd Street Armory,” said Middendorf. “It is the oldest armory in the United States, and will be a great host for world class boxing. The Armory hasn’t seen boxing since 2003, and we plan on making October 21st a night to remember.

Ticket information and purchase outlets, along with the undercard will be announced soon. For more information on Victory Boxing Promotions, please visit www.victoryboxingpromotions.com.

The 23rd Street Armory is located at: 22 S 23rd St, Philadelphia, PA 19103

Floyd Mayweather Media Conference Call Transcript

Kelly Swanson
Thank you operator. Thanks to everybody for joining in. From the World Tour to Fight Week, we are days away from a really, really big event. Floyd Mayweather versus Conor McGregor.

I’m going to first introduce the participants on the call today. Of course we have the one and only Floyd Mayweather joined by Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions, and Stephen Espinoza, Executive VP and General Manager of SHOWTIME Sports. At this time I’ll turn it over to Leonard Ellerbe to begin the call.

Leonard Ellerbe
Thank you, Kelly. I would like to thank everyone for joining this call today. We have a great event next Saturday and we’re excited. I just want to remind everyone on the call, this is the widest distributed pay-per-view ever. The fans can get this event however, whenever. We have a ton of content out there, and it’s available to fans wherever and however they want to get it.

In addition to our normal, traditional methods that we distribute our platform on including via satellite, cable and telco providers, we also have a variety of digital options. You can order now. You can go to ShowtimePPV.com, or if get the Showtime PPV app, and it’s also available through Sony PlayStation, Xbox, Apple TV and Roku.

So without further ado, I would like to bring on our partner Stephen Espinoza.

Stephen Espinoza
Thanks, Leonard. We have indeed worked very hard to make this fight available as widely as possible using the maximum distribution and the maximum availability, including UFC platforms, UFC.TV, the movie theaters, closed circuit. There’s really no excuse for not watching this fight.

This is an event that transcends sports. It’s captured the world’s attention. We’re seeing unprecedented interest in a number of different ways, surpassing what we never expected to surpass in the Mayweather-Pacquiao event. This is the final fight of a once-in-a-generation talent. It’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime event, the two best combat sport fighters in the world facing off like we’ve never seen them before.

In Conor, we’ve got someone who’s as unpredictable as any opponent that Floyd has ever faced, both in and out of the ring, and it’s a challenge to Floyd on a whole new level. We’re supporting this matchup with three high-quality matchups from Mayweather Promotions, two world title fights headlined of course by one of my personal favorites as fan, Gervonta Davis, the US’s youngest world champion defending his title. We also have the light heavyweight world championship and an all-action opening fight as well.

Last point. We are encouraging fans to buy early. There will be unprecedented activity on fight day. Very possible that we’re exceeding Mayweather-Pacquiao. We certainly are seeing activity which is far in excess of that. I know all of you guys have heard that before, but to give you some specifics, when we post things, we’re seeing things in the millions of views. When we do a Snapchat story and within 48 hours it’s at 4.5 to 5 million views, we know we have an unprecedented event. And in order to avoid the rush, we are reminding people to buy early as much as possible.

L. Ellerbe
Thank you, Stephen. So without further ado ladies and gentlemen, none other than the “money man” himself, Floyd Mayweather.

Floyd Mayweather
Hey everybody. I want to say thanks for having me on this call and I want to thank you guys for writing about me for the last 21 years and keeping me relevant. Without the writers and the people that support this event and throughout my whole career I wouldn’t be where I’m at.

So I just want to say, to every writer that’s on this phone, to every blogger that’s on this phone, I just want to say thank you. I appreciate you, Mayweather Promotions appreciates you, SHOWTIME appreciates you, CBS appreciates you, MGM Grand appreciates you, Swanson Communications appreciates you, my team and my family and my, everybody appreciates the stories and all the bloggers, the sports writers and everyone. We just want to say thank you and now we can get on with the questions.

Q
Do you spend any time thinking about how this is the last camp, this is going to be the last weigh-in or do you think back at all the to the start of your career?

F. Mayweather
Actually I thought that Andre Berto was going to be the last weigh-in, I thought that was going to be the last training camp, I mean just honestly speaking I thought that was going to be my last everything. You just don’t ever know what can happen. We’re here with this big event.

This is my last one, ladies and gentlemen. I gave my word to Al Haymon, I gave my word to my children, and one thing I don’t want to do is break that. I’m going to stick to my word. This will be my last fight.

Q
What was the really seminal moment for you that really turned the tide and got everyone’s attention for you? Was it more like aligning with Al Haymon and following the plan that both of you guys laid out?

F. Mayweather
Al Haymon and I joined forced because when Al Haymon saw me he saw not just a fighter but a person with a sharp mind, very articulate, and very smart, and not just in the ring but outside the ring and he knew that we could be a powerful force together.

Now once again, when I fought Diego Corrales, I did good numbers. When I fought Angel Manfredy, I did good numbers. And the list before I even got to Haymon, I did good numbers. But me and Haymon together came together and had a game plan, whereas when I was dealing with people in the past, nobody ever really had game plan. I had a game plan. We already had a game plan. Me and Leonard both had a game plan, but it was missing a piece. So when we all came together as one, that’s when I came up with a game plan and they started putting everything into play.

Q
Also after this fight, how do you think you’re going to spend your life? I know you got Mayweather Promotions, but what else are you going to be involved in and what are you going to be doing as the days pass?

F. Mayweather
My real estate portfolio is truly amazing. The real estate, that’s very, very huge. That’s a huge part of my life. My children are going to college so that’s going to take up a lot of my time because education is extremely important in my home.

I want my kids to do something that I wasn’t able to do. I want them to be able to go college, and then the businesses that I leave for them, I want them to be able to take those businesses and take them to the next level. If I took a business and made 100 million, I want them to take it to the next level to make 400 or 500 million. So it’s all about giving back. I’ve built different businesses and got businesses started so my children’s children can takeover someday.

S. Espinoza
I think a critical turning point in Floyd’s career was buying himself out of the Top Rank contract. That is going out on a limb, paying $750,000 with no guarantees on what’s going to happen on the other side of that. Without the courage to make that move, without the foresight to make that move, none of the rest of this possible. It’s easy to sit back and forget that it all starts with taking risk. No one has this level of success without taking a risk, and that’s one very tangible point where Floyd put his money where his mouth is, took the risk and was able to reap the rewards.
Q
What weight class do you believe that you were at your absolute best in and why?

F. Mayweather
Well I think it all depends on certain fights. You look at the Diego Corrales fight. There was a lot of people talking about that one. And at 135, the fight against Phillip Ndou. People like to talk about that as one of their favorite fights. At 140 they like to talk about the fight against Arturo Gatti because I really wasn’t at 140 at that moment.

And then at 147, they like to talk about the fight against Ricky Hatton. And at 154 they say it was a hell of a fight between me and Miguel Cotto. Then they also talk about how I was dominant at 154 against Canelo. I guess different days go different ways when you go out there and compete. I don’t want to judge myself, I just want to say that, different days I feel different ways. It all depends on how I feel when I go out there. Because some days I don’t feel up to par but I still go out there and I put on a hell of a show. Some days I go out there and feel great and the show is really not that good.

Q
For which fight would you say that this is the best Floyd Mayweather there’s ever been?

F. Mayweather
I can’t really say. I don’t even watch the fights because it’s hard for me to watch. It could be any of my top fights that people say that they love the most, but I say I could’ve been better. I could have done that better because I’m critical of myself and I feel like there’s never been enough. When I go out there and compete, I could’ve done something better, I could’ve been better. So, it’s good to not even watch it. My older son, both my boys, not my youngest daughter, but my three oldest, they love to going on YouTube and watching it.

Q
Was there one fight in your mind that, even though you got the victory, that maybe you were disappointed in your performance?

F. Mayweather
There have been a few fights where I probably said yes, I won, but that wasn’t my best. But I come back and I look better the next time. I look at lot better the next time.

Q
What do you expect the atmosphere and the level of crown support to be like on the night and how do you think that will be divided between yourself and him?

F. Mayweather
That really doesn’t have anything to do with the crowd. It has something to do with the two competitors. It could be pro-McGregor, it could be pro-Mayweather. It’s all about excitement, it’s all about giving everybody excitement, my fans as well as his fans, that’s what it really is about. I want to touch on the subject so everybody knows, that me and Ricky Hatton actually fought at 147, but we fought in 10 ounce gloves. So, I was going to make sure everybody on the phone is aware when me and Ricky Hatton fought against each other, we wore 10 ounce gloves and was at 147 pounds.

Q
How often have you used the 8 ounce gloves and how often the 10 ounce gloves?

F. Mayweather
Well, from 147 all the way down the boxing weights, you fight in 8 ounce gloves. From 154 that all the way to heavyweight, you fight in 10 ounce gloves. At one time boxing there was a lot of trauma and head injuries, so they brought 10 ounce gloves in for the fights to wear at 147. But then they went back. The guess that they weren’t getting the blood, sweat and tears they were expecting to get, so they had to go back to the guys wearing 8 ounce gloves at 147 all the way down.

Q
I was just wondering how closely that you followed what happened this weekend in Charlottesville with the protest and if you have any thoughts on it and the president’s reaction to it?

F. Mayweather
I’ve honestly been extremely, extremely busy, so I haven’t even been on social media or been watching TV. I’ve been extremely busy training, working out and just spending time a lot of time with my daughter. But I’ve seen some things, and what’s going down in Charlottesville, it’s not cool. It’s not cool at all. I always talk about the world needs to be a more positive place. I didn’t really hear what the president said. I’ve been so focused on this event, it’s so huge.

Q
I was curious if you’ve seen the video that was released of Conor’s sparing session with Paulie Malignaggi and what you thought of that, even though it was only about 20 seconds.

F. Mayweather
I had a chance to see it. And my thought is that I think it was really interesting, but with a lot of rabbit punching; a lot of illegal rabbit punching behind the head. A lot of grappling, a lot of wrestling, a lot of illegal shots. That’s just my honest opinion. I’m pretty sure the referee is going to be fair on both sides. I just want a good solid fight.

Q
Did you believe he got the knockdown on Paulie based on the video we saw?

F. Mayweather
Some some may call it a knockdown; some may not call it a knockdown. But at the end of the day, it only counts once you get under the lights, that’s just in a gym. We sit here judging Paulie, a guy that’s been retired and just commentating and traveling the world and not going to the gym at all, instead of going in there with a guy who is just working out, an athlete period, just working out every day.

Q
I wanted to get your assessment of the referee and do you think he will play a part in the fight at all?

F. Mayweather
I truly believe the ref is going to do his job. The referee’s job is to make sure that he’s keeping the bout clean. I want to have a good fight. Like I said on numerous occasions going up to this fight, I’m coming straight ahead. So, he doesn’t have anything to worry about. I look forward to following the rules of boxing. I’m pretty sure he looks forward to following the rules of boxing. He had Joe Cortez in his training camp which is a great thing. Even though he had Joe Cortez in his training camp, I still see him doing extremely dirty things. But my job is not to worry about the referee, my job is to go out there and fight and let the referee do his job.

L. Ellerbe
Let me add on to that. We’re very pleased with the selection of all the officials that we have for the entire card for August the 26th, with the referees included. The Nevada State Athletic Commission is the best commission out there, and they have the best officials in place and we’re very happy.

Q
Obviously you’ve fought in 8 ounce gloves, but do you think that favors you or Conor more the fact that they dropped the gloves to 8 ounces? Or how do you think that really affects the outcome of this fight?

F. Mayweather
I’m not really worried about the outcome. I’m worried more about excitement. Conor said he’s used to fighting in 4 ounce gloves. If you go to my social media page, you’ll see where I put out the extra work. I want to make him feel comfortable as possible. I’m not going to have any excuses. I don’t want him to have any excuses.

Q
How has the process of training and recovery changed as you’ve aged?

F. Mayweather
It’s not really the same. I think with age comes wisdom. It’s about just knowing your body.

When I was younger and I talked about this Media Day, you’re young, it’s fight, fight, fight; never let the body recoup or rejuvenate. Whereas I’m older now, so resting is very, very, very important.

I work extremely hard still at the age of 40, but I’m letting the body rest a lot more. And that’s why, you guys saw on All Acces I was taking time. I have a whole team that helps me keep my body intact and in order.

Q
How much do you really believe what you said about losing a step and how much are you saying that to generate interest in the fight?

F. Mayweather
Well I’m just being honest. I don’t think that I’m the same Floyd Mayweather that I was ten years ago; I’m not even the same Floyd Mayweather that I was five or two years ago. But I still said that I still have a high IQ in that ring. And I said experience-wise, it leans towards me, just period.

Most times when I go out there and compete against any fighter, experience will always lean towards me becauseI’ve been in the ring and been at such a high level for so long.

Q
How do you feel that press and fans treat you and McGregor differently and do you believe that race plays any role in that?

F. Mayweather
I’m not even going to really touch on that anymore; I spoke on that. I’m going to leave it where I left that. You know, I spoke about that before. I’m going to let Leonard Ellerbe touch on that subject.

L. Ellerbe
The things that he was saying about the back-and-forth banter, it’s trash talk. Floyd’s focus is fighting next week and putting on a great performance for all the fans across the world. That’s where we are at.

There are double standards out there. But that goes on with anything. There is a high awareness out there in the public, there’s a lot of things that go on. Floyd’s focus is next Saturday and going out there and putting on an electrifying performance in front of his fans; that’s where we’re at.

Q
Do you see anything of you in McGregor when you’ve spoken and been a few feet away from each other?

F. Mayweather
I don’t think there’s any fighter period that’s in combat sports right now that hasn’t looked at a Floyd Mayweather video or studied a Floyd Mayweather fight. At least I don’t think so because I think there’s like a Mayweather era and I will still look down in my era.

When a person has been so dominant in his era, I think other fighters are going to pay attention. The main fighters are going to pay attention because they want to be at that same level and they want to do the same thing. They want to dominate with ease.

Q
Do you see anything in the past between you and him — when you’ve kind of interacted — any similarities at all?

F. Mayweather
Not really. Of course I’m huge in boxing, but I’m huge in MMA also. I’m huge in both in the sense that my name is huge in MMA. I made a crazy name in the sport of boxing, but it’s crazy that I’ve been working so hard throughout the years that I ended up having a big name in MMA also. So even though I never competed in MMA, I’m still a big name in MMA.

Q
Given the point you are both on now, who is taking the bigger risk here?

F. Mayweather
I truly believe I’m taking the bigger risk. But it’s a big reward for both. I have the 49-0 record. When a fighter has lost before, if he loses again, they say, “Oh, it’s nothing. He’s lost before.” But when a fighter has been dominating for 20-some years — never lost — everything is on the line; my legacy, my boxing record — everything is on the line.

Q
have you stopped at any point and kind of thought, “wow, there is a whole lifetime’s work here that I am putting out there.” Or do you kind of not let it enter your mind?

F. Mayweather
I just try and really focus on being positive. I just worry about going out there and doing what I do best.

I try not to think about losing or taking an L, that’s really not my focus.

Every day I tell myself I’m a winner. I was born to be a winner at life. Not just in the ring, but I was born to be a winner. So whatever I do, I try to give it 100% and I try to push my limit.

But like Stephen said, it’s all about taking risk. I wouldn’t be where I’m at if I didn’t take risk. So I don’t mind putting the 49 and 0 record on the line. I don’t mind putting everything on the line, for this fight. I feel like it’s worth it.

Q
How important it is for you to get the 50th victory of your career and give you one more than the Rocky Marciano record?

F. Mayweather
I don’t focus on other fighters. But I’m appreciative for every fighter that paved the way for me to be where I’m at.

I always talk about how I appreciate the legendary fighters. My focus is to go out there and give the fans an exciting fight even though I know this is number 50 and we’re constantly talking about Rocky Marciano.

I just always like to let the fans and the people know Rocky Marciano is a legend. Rocky Marciano did it his way, and I would just like to try to do it the Mayweather way.

K. Swanson
Okay, thanks to everybody for joining us. Any last closing comments, Floyd, and we will wrap this up.

F. Mayweather
I just want to say thank you to everybody. I want to say thank you Leonard, I want to thank SHOWTIME, I want to thank CBS. I want to thank Kelly Swanson, I have to thank Al Haymon. And I want to thank everybody that called in — all the writers, all the bloggers, everyone from the MMA world, everybody from the boxing world, everybody from the sports world. I just really want to say thank you. Me and my team, we all appreciate you guys. Talk to you later.

Conor McGregor Media Conference Call Transcript

Matt Radmanovich
Thank you everyone for joining. Today we’ll actually be breaking this conference call in two, with UFC President Dana White joining us in the second half of the call. But first, we have joining us a fighter many people call the greatest mixed martial artist in the world. Already a two division champion in the UFC, who has taken on the best in his sport, “The Notorious” Conor McGregor leaves the octagon behind now for him to step into the ring and again, make the impossible possible. Challenging an icon of boxing, the undefeated 49-0 Floyd “Money” Mayweather, this will be his toughest test yet.

Can Conor shock the world? We’ll all find out August 26th live from the T-Mobile Arena in the fight capital of the world, Las Vegas, Nevada. Without further ado, I turn the call over to your questions for the notorious Conor McGregor.

Q
I wanted to get your reaction today to the ruling that the Nevada State Athletic Commission made that will allow the request that you and Floyd made, to reduce the size of gloves from 10 ounces to 8 ounces. Can you give me your thoughts about that ruling?

Conor McGregor
I’m very happy with how the Nevada State Athletic Commission handled it. I think they handled it fairly – they listened to both requests and just the overall approach to the decision and the referees, the judges, I think they were very fair throughout. So that was a good thing for me to see that they’re taking into consideration both fighters’ requests and I’m very happy with it.

Q
What was your specific reason for wanting the smaller gloves?

C. McGregor
You’ve got pros and cons on both sides. You’ve got both athletes asking for the request. And then you’ve got me also coming up in ounces from what I’m used to. I know some in the media are like oh no, it’s 10, it’s 8, but hey, look what I fight with. I fight in 4 ounce gloves, fingerless gloves. The knuckles are barely covered in what I am used to, so it benefits both in certain ways and I’m very happy with it.

Q
What kind of gloves will you wear in the fight; what brand?

C. McGregor
You know, we’re still in discussion with that, so we’ll see in a little bit.

Q
I wanted to know might there be two or three things that people don’t know about you that hasn’t been written before?

C. McGregor
Oh wow. I don’t know. What you see with me is what you get. I am the same person on and off the camera. A lot of people like to say I’m not. Obviously there are different moments. You’ll catch me against an opponent, I’m a little different but I portray myself as who I am. So what you see is what you get with me. And there have been many articles, many stories, many things written, but it’s been okay I suppose. It’s just I am who I am. I speak the truth for what I believe and people portray that in many ways. So I’m pretty open and what you see is what you get with me.

Q
Is there anything like you like to cook, maybe any other hobbies – changing diapers now lately?

C. McGregor
Yes. I’m razor quick with the diaper changes. Right now I have a nutritionist who’s been with me for this time, bringing in the weight. So the cooking is out the window, my son has been living with me since, it must be three months now. We’ve had one hell of a camp. It’s been one long stretch. A lot of hard, hard work. A lot of dedicated and focused work and then of course the nutrition has been top of the range, and that’s why I’m at peak physical condition at this moment, ten days out. Now we are closing in on the weight cutting phase, and then we weigh-in and we fight. So that’s about it. I’m by the book.

Q
How have you approached the challenge of possibly going 12 rounds in this fight?

C. McGregor
We’ve adjusted to the timing in my cardiovascular preparation. On the endurance phases we’ve stretched it out to accommodate the 12 three minute rounds. It’s actually been very enjoyable to go from five, five minute rounds which is what I’m used to, which is 25 minutes, to 12 threes in boxing, which is 36 minutes. You’ve got to factor in there’s not as much grabbing, but not to the extent of a mixed martial arts bout where you can end up on your back and you’ve got to tactically work your way back to your feet, which is very draining.

But it’s a different kind of cardiovascular training. So we have adjusted some things and I feel absolutely amazing. I’ve done multiple 12 round fights in the buildup for this. I’ve done 12 rounds just last night. We are more than prepared. Myself and my training team have formulated the McGregor fast program. This is a cardiovascular training program that we formulated after I suffered my first defeat in the UFC to Nate Diaz. We formulated it for the Diaz 2 rematch. And even a triathlete with a big weight advantage, much bigger man and can go for days, that’s what he specializes in.

He has an unrivaled gas tank. So we had to come up with a special formula and a special method to train. And that’s what we’ve done. We created the McGregor fast program and I’ve been on that since about a week after that first loss. And since then I’ve had I believe two bouts under that and now this will be the third one. So I’ve been on this program over a year now and you’ll see the results. I mean to be able to go from 5 fives to 12 threes and we’ve done it pretty seamlessly as well, I’m very proud of it and I’m very excited to go in and represent the McGregor fast program on August 26th as well.

Q
I’m wondering if you see a difference between how fans treat you and Floyd and whether you think race plays any role in that.

C. McGregor
How many times have I been slayed by people? It’s give and take here. I get my fair share of hate and my fair share of love also. I believe it’s 50/50. I mean look at every boxing analyst. It’s like I’ve been discarded and it’s like I’m not welcome. I’ve suffered as well, so it is what it is. For me, this is athlete versus athlete. I was upset that Floyd tried to bring this in. I thought that was a weak move on his part. And he knows and his people truly know that it’s not from me, not that I’m saying that there’s not people on both sides that have this mindset where it’s black versus white and this type of thing.

But it’s certainly something I do not condone. This is athlete versus athlete and two prime physical condition athletes about to take part in an amazing event and that’s it on my end. So I’m disappointed to hear the way sometimes it’s been portrayed, but I suppose it’s just the nature of the game with the way things are going on in the world at the moment. But all I can do is stay focused on my craft and look to go out and put on a great performance for the fans who are supporting this event, as a whole.

Q
What do you make of some of boxing circles being so dismissive of this fight? Is that something that motivates you?

C. McGregor
It’s certainly motivating. The disrespect and the disregard to my skill set is disappointing. I look at people so many times and their mind is closed. They’ve got a closed mind to how things can be done. It’s a set way and there’s no other way. Where if that was the case we’d never have reached across the waters and searched for other lands. And we’d never have went into space. Do you know what I mean? You’ve got to have an open mind and you’ve got to realize that there are other ways and there is a time and a place for every single moment.

You’ve got to give respect for other disciplines and other styles. Like for instance, fighting is a complex game. There is a time and a place for every single attack and every single move. It’s about finding the correct timing for it. So when I hear the way they carry on and they disregard and disrespect, it is what it is. I use it as motivation and I look forward to going in and educating them. But at the same time I get it. I’m coming in; I’m supposed to be from another sport and so again, I understand where it’s at. But I’m just looking forward to August 26th, going in and proving what I’m saying and then educating the world on what martial arts are and giving the fans and everybody a good solid fight and earning my respect in this game also.

Q
In UFC you can’t always wear personal sponsors, logos and endorsements like that. Are you looking forward to that? What do you have planned endorsement wise for August 26th?

C. McGregor
Yes. I’ve got a couple of endorsements coming up. And then as far as an apparel deal, we’re close on an apparel deal. But at the same time, I’m in no rush. I’ve got good endorsement deals. As far as in ring endorsements, there are two that will be on the shorts I believe. Look, there are so many moving parts in the game. I’m just kind of trying to roll with it. And look, it’s ten days from the fight time so I leave this to my agency and my management agency. I rely on sports management to handle that side of the business, but it is certainly a good business, so I’m very happy with everything that’s been going on, on the endorsement side.

Q
I just wondered how your preparation and also the buildup kind of outside around you, has differed from your big UFC fights and whether that’s affected your preparations at all.

C. McGregor
Oh, look it’s another day for me. It’s another day of making history. It’s another day of doing what I’ve been told I shouldn’t be doing or I can’t do. It’s another mega blockbuster event. It’s nothing new to me here. So the only difference in this buildup is I have a little son now with me. So we are here in Las Vegas as a family and my coaches and sparring partners and team, they have their multiple houses close by. So it’s just been – I go to the gym and I train really hard for that given day. I come home, I rest and chill with my family and then I repeat.

And then the media and the circus around it, it’s business as usual. It’s the exact same.

Q
Do you believe Floyd and what he has said about a rematch? Specifically on Jimmy Kimmel

C. McGregor
Yes. I didn’t watch – I didn’t hear the Jimmy Kimmel bit – but I got some snippets of it that someone sent – I got tagged in some stuff, but I didn’t really hear much of what he said. As far as what he said on the world tour, he said he would step into the octagon. If he would do that he would have my respect. Anyone that’s willing to step into a game like that where the limitations are so short, deserves respect. And that’s at all levels whether it’s at club level in a small hall, or a big stadium, it’s still full of fans. If you get into that game or any combat sport game for that matter. I’ll be here to grant him his rematch.

But right now we’re focused on putting him away August 26th and then we’ll see what happens after that. I also have multiple world titles to defend inside the Ultimate Fighting Championship. And we’ll see. Maybe he can come over and after he gets his ass whooped, he can try and challenge for my lightweight belt.

Q
I wondered whether your mindset has changed toward anything he’s done or anything that’s happened in the buildup has made you more confident?

C. McGregor
I think the team I have around me has instilled confidence in me. And we have a solid team. It’s been a growing team and an adjusting team throughout my career. And I think we just understand how it’s done and how it’s done correctly. And training has gone absolutely flawless. Everyone has a say; everyone listens to each other. Everyone’s input is there and then we come to the best solution off of everyone’s input and it’s just been an absolute amazing camp.

The other night we were in the altitude chamber at like 13,000 feet at the Ultimate Fighting Championship Performance Institute and it was a scary training session. There’s no way in hell that I am not ready to fight in the deepest of trenches in this contest. Like the training sessions and the practice that we’ve been putting in, has been to hell and back. So we are prepared for every possible outcome. I believe now the gloves are 8 ounces, I don’t believe he makes it out of the second round. I have multiple first round KOs and I have multiple under one minute KOs on my record.

So part of me kind of wants to show some skill and to dismantle him that way. But I do not see it – I do not see him absorbing the blows in the first two rounds. But we are ready for absolutely every scenario. I’m ready to go to war for the full 12 rounds and I’m ready to put him away in the first ten seconds. So that’s where my head’s at.

Q
Floyd has worn eight ounce gloves in 46 out of his 49 fights. So for that reason, was there any consideration on your part, to wear 10 ounce gloves, just to inconvenience his side?

C. McGregor:
No. Not at all. I mean I said that doesn’t bother me. Again, I’m – I was already up six ounces from four to ten, so it’s down a little bit from ten to eight, so how often he’s worn the gloves never factored into it. I didn’t even know that for instance, so that didn’t factor into my thoughts at all. I do not care about his record. I do not care about his achievements. Every fight is on a fight by fight basis. So that’s the way we approach it.

Q
Was Robert Byrd the referee that you asked for? And what do you think that he will bring to this fight? Are you happy with it?

C. McGregor
They gave us options. We didn’t necessarily ask for any referee in particular. There was a referee or two that gave an opinion on the fight and it was like a little bit, if that’s the case then it’s very hard for them to be considered. So that was where we were at with it. And then the referee – I mean we were kind of hoping there was like a mix between an MMA – someone who had some link to an MMA bout. Robert Byrd is a phenomenal referee. We’ve watched him – I’ve watched him ref since the announcement has been made. He’s a good ref. He lets the fight take place. He doesn’t interrupt. He steps in when he should step in.

His also has some links to mixed martial arts also. His wife was involved in the mixed martial arts game. So I think again, I’m very pleased and I think it credits the Nevada State Athletic Commission on their choosing. It was done very, very fairly. So we are very happy with it.

Q
You weren’t hoping for Tony Weeks then by any chance?

C. McGregor
Tony Weeks was also a consideration. He was also selected – he has had – he has ref’d both MMA bouts and boxing bouts, so yes, he was definitely one on our list also. But we are happy. We are happy with the selection.

Q
Did you have any issue with the three judges selected by the Commission?

C. McGregor
I haven’t really studied on the judging so it’s very hard to find out like a history of the judges just yet. I believe my coach. I’m sure that coach has been already on that case. But I believe it’s a fair mix across the board. I believe there’s US, there’s European. I think it’s again, I commend the Nevada State Athletic Commission, they’ve done a hell of a job. It was fair all the way through. So we are very pleased.

Q
On Monday your former sparring partner, Paulie Malignaggi, said that he is trying to fight you. That’s his intention. He would like to fight you. I’m wondering if this is something that you’re interested in?

C. McGregor
Look, tell the kid to join the queue. Tell him to shut his mouth and join the queue, will you fast? Lord save me. He got his ass whooped and he went sprinting and I don’t know what you want me to say about the guy, but hey, there’s a big list of people that want to get in there and try and fight me, so tell him to join the queue and we’ll see what happens after the fight.

Have you watched All Access at all? What do you make of the way that they are portraying you and the way they’re portraying him on that show?

C. McGregor
Thank god I’m in the game. Thank god it’s me on the other side, otherwise it’d be one hell of a boring buildup to the contest I suppose. But I don’t really care. I mean I know he has control of these and he’s an executive producer on the project. I watched episode 1 and I watched episode 2. I thought episode 2 was a great episode. Episode 3, I think I watched a little bit of episode 3. It’s a nice dynamic. I’m in the gym scheduling full on bouts. He’s at the ranch with the kids and the horse. So it’s a nice dynamic.

He’s doing one thing, I’m doing another. So that’s the way they’re playing it, that’s the way it is. I think the buildup is the buildup. Everyone is excited here. We could go radio silent. We could go radio silent and this thing is still going to blow everything out of the water. The public know what they’re witnessing here. This is a special historic event and everyone is very excited about it. So that’s where I’m at.

Q
Some fighters like Terrence Crawford and David Haye have put out videos mocking your training. Have you seen these videos and if so, what do you make of the response to your training on Friday?

C. McGregor:
I’ve seen some videos. It is what it is. It’s lighthearted. I don’t take it personally. If anything, I see stiffness in every single one of them. You must have the limbs free. Your shoulders must be disconnected. You must have the ability to disconnect your shoulders and reconnect it at the point of impact. With that skill set is how you can change a jab to a hook in the blink of an eye or a jab to an uppercut in the blink of an eye. It’s the same thing with the hip flexors for kicks. If I throw a front kick to your midsection; if I’m tight in the hip and I can’t free the leg like I can free my shoulders like I showed one of many training methods on how to free the shoulders, if I can do that with my hip flexor, I can change the point of impact from the belly and switch it up to the head in a millisecond.

These are just training methods – age old training methods. That shoulder training method you saw was made very popular by the great Rickson Gracie, one of the pioneers of mixed martial arts. It’s the shoulder loosening exercises. It gets the shoulders warmed up. You’ve got to do it correct though. I’ve seen David Haye hit pads with it. You can’t hit pads with it when the shoulder is disconnected. You hit when the shoulder is disconnected and you’ll do serious damage to yourself. And David Haye is a man who has pulled out contests over a sore baby toe. So he must be careful with the way he hits pads.

But it is what it is. We will educate as we go forward. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

Q
You said that you want to defend your multiple world titles in MMA. Do you still consider yourself the featherweight champion?

C. McGregor
Oh, 100%. I mean how can I not consider myself the UFC featherweight world champion and the UFC lightweight world champion? The current UFC featherweight world champion is Max Holloway, a man who I dismantled. And then the former was Jose Aldo. I still reign supreme over that division. And then also, the 155-pound division, I know there’s talk of an interim belt. I had already won that belt and literally a month later, there was an interim scheduled.

But you know it is what it is. Everyone knows I am the multiple weight world champion of the UFC’s featherweight division and lightweight division. And I look forward to going back in continuing where I left off.

Q
Conor what have you heard as far as the metrics from the fight?

C. McGregor
I saw it pointing to record breaking numbers. All across the board. From the gate to the sponsorships to the Pay-Per-Views. Absolutely every angle.

So I am very, very happy with how it has gone. I am very happy with how the promotion has gone. I believe I have handled it carefully and best of all involved I believe.

I have been more active than all involved by a mile. So I am very happy I look forward to when the contest is all said and done and wrapped up.

My friend is getting married in Ibiza. We are going to go to Ibiza and then I will relax on my yacht in Ibiza and I will begin the counting game. Because that is counting sponsorships, our count of the date revenue, the merchandise sales and the multiple pies that I have my hand in. And then I build up my fortune and there we go. So that is my plan.

M. Radmanovich
Thank you everyone. Thank you Conor for joining us and at this point we are going to patch in UFC President, Dana White to join us for the next half an hour to take your questions. So we will reprompt you. We will get the queue going again.

Q
With Conor going into the boxing world as opposed to James Toney coming into the MMA world, why do you think there isn’t that inevitability that there was when Tony came into MMA?

Dana White
Well I think a lot of people believe there is. But the difference is obviously, he came into a sport where there were so many different weapons and so many different ways to beat him.

Whereas, Conor can punch. Conor hits hard. Conor knocks people out. Completely different, completely different. Listen people think that Conor is going to be completely outclassed. Some people are saying that he will never hit Floyd once.

I will tell you this. I just watched him work out last night. He looks phenomenal. He is in great shape. He hits hard and now we are fighting in eight ounce gloves and this is going to be a fight.

Anything can happen in a fight. Even I can’t remember who the boxer was that fought in MMA. He hit Tim Silva, former Heavyweight Champion ,and knocked him out. So anything is possible in a fight.

Q
Is there a fight that you tend to remember under the UFC banner that is comparable in anyway in terms of the buildup, the hype and just everything that is going into this?

D. White
There are tons of big fights that I have been involved with but obviously nothing as big as this. This is the biggest event ever in combat sports history. It is the most distributed event in Pay-Per-View history.

You can get this fight anywhere. This thing is on in like over 200 countries on Pay-Per-View. Boxing usually doesn’t do a lot of digital. You can buy this thing through UFC.TV and through the SHOWTIME app, Amazon, Sony, Apple, et cetera. You can buy this thing.

If you are in Manhattan or you are on a desert island somewhere, if you have Wi-Fi you can buy this fight.

Q
What do you classify as your biggest as far as the promotion and the buildup?

D. White
Well it depends. It depends on what time you are talking about it. All of the Conor fights and the Ronda fights have always been big. Chuck Liddell, Tito Ortiz was big. Anderson Silva, Vitor Belfort. There are tons of big fights that had a big fight feeling.

But this is the biggest fight ever. It is tracking right now to be the largest commercial Pay-Per-View ever done in the history of Pay-Per-View. It is the most distributed Pay-Per-View event in history. You know the list goes on and on of records that this thing will break.

Q
What is it like dealing with a personality like Conor where the guy is not satisfied ever and is always pushing for more and things that seem either impossible or not allowable to you?

D. White
I love it. That is why I call the kid the Unicorn. To accomplish great things in life you have to take huge risks. Who takes more risks than Conor McGregor?

The guy is a huge star. A fight falls out a week before. He will fight anybody. He doesn’t care. He believes in himself so much that he will literally fight anybody.

Most of the guys on a roster are like, I haven’t trained for him. I didn’t prepare for this guy and they won’t take the risk. They will cancel the fight and, you know that is the way most normal people are. Not this guy.

You know Floyd Mayweather and the talk started about these guys fighting. Never once did he say I absolutely demand that he fights me in MMA. He said no I want to go and fight Floyd in his own world. I want to beat him in what he does the best.

We actually have this thing that we are coming out with next week that we are going to put out on social media and other places. Where Conor starts off, you know, five, six years ago saying, “Dana you will sign me into the UFC. I will be your biggest star. I will win two world titles.”

And all this stuff that he is laying out that is going to happen before I had even heard of Conor McGregor.

Q
Do you recall the first conversation or the first time he broached the Floyd Mayweather question? Can you take us to that conversation when it came up and you discussed it? And what were your thoughts at that time?

D. White
Well I think the first time I remember the Mayweather thing was those guys were going back and forth. I thought it was crazy that Conor and Mayweather are talking smack to each other right now.

Then Conor told me he wanted to fight him and I was like, what? What is the point in even talking about this? That guy is never going to fight in MMA. He said no I want to box him.

And I was just like, all right. That’s crazy. And again it is one of those things I thought would never happen. Ehat would the rules be? I said we would never get a deal done with these guys. It would be impossible to get this deal done.

Then the first time this thing even started to get serious was I was on ESPN and I threw out, “Tell you what Floyd. I will give you $25 million.” And then TMZ got him somewhere and he hung his watch out the window and said, “You see this watch?”

And I don’t know what that meant. The watch was $25 million? I don’t know. But that is what started the negotiations when I put out the $25 million offer.

Q
Are you now a believer in Mystic Mac?

D. White
I am a believer in Mystic Mac for sure. This kid he has done everything he said he would do. And he is claiming that he will knock out Floyd Mayweather within four rounds and I think he broke it down to two now.

But yes listen I am with Conor. I am in. I am on the ride with him man so I am excited.

Q
I am wondering if you think this fight has the potential to impact the popularity of either sport? And related to that, does your research so much crossover between the MMA fan and the boxing fan?

D. White
There are some. You know the boxing fan is older. Those demographics are older than ours. But I believe that this is good for combat sports. It is like when Mayweather Paacquiao did the numbers that they did I was like wow.

First I said good for them. And Number 2, I was like well that is the bar. That shows me that if you have the right fight at the right place at the right time, people are willing to watch.

I knew once this thing started to materialize that this fight was going to be so much bigger worldwide than any fight that had ever happened. Conor has a very big following in places like Brazil, in places like Australia. Obviously Europe.

So I knew that worldwide this would be the big and I was right. This thing is the biggest event that has ever happened to combat sports. This fight will reach over a billion homes worldwide.

Q
It could help both sports. Can it hurt either sport? Depending on what the outcome is?

D. White
I don’t think it hurts either sport. I think this is one of those cool situations where two guys are willing to take the risk to fight each other. And I think that this thing has captured the imagination of people.

That is how this fight was built. This fight was really built through the fans and the media.

Q
Has your respect for Floyd Mayweather and his team grown through this process?

D. White
Definitely. The worst deals to be involved with are people that aren’t very smart but they think they are. They are the most dangerous kind. And Mayweather’s team isn’t bad at all. These guys are actually very, very smart guys.

When I say that it’s because when problems pop up you know it is always hard to fix with people who aren’t too bright. Then it is always the small stuff and not the right things to be arguing about. These guys are really easy to deal with.

Q
How do you see the eight ounce gloves affecting the contest?

D. White
I think it affects the contest a lot. First of all, yes Floyd will be faster with eight ounce gloves. But Floyd is a defensive master and he has less glove for less defense.

Conor hits like a truck, smaller gloves favor him big time. So it affects the fight big time.

When we were in the original negotiations it wasn’t even something they were talking about eight ounce gloves.

So I don’t know what has changed in the last however long ago we did the deal but I am glad it did. I think it makes it so much more fun.

Q
Do you subscribe or ascribe a lot of the credit to the family for the way Conor is as well?

D. White
Definitely, you have to. But at the end of the day he is a special kid. I call him the Unicorn. He is different than anybody I have ever dealt with.

I like how he is willing to put everything on the line. I have never seen anybody who believes in himself more than this guy does. And believes in – when he makes up his mind and what he is going to do. He absolutely 100% believes it. Lives it. It is fascinating.

Q
What noises were you making watching him spar last night? What were the noises coming out of Dana White?

D. White
I was very quiet and sat there and just watched. He sparred with a really fast talented kid and it was a good session. And Conor worked like a dog last night.

He is in great shape. He is hitting really hard right now and he is in a very good place. I loved watching it last night and I feel good about this.

Q
If he beats Floyd and he comes back for a couple of fights in the UFC would it not surprise you if he beats Floyd Mayweather if he starts calling out Canelo and Golovkin?

D. White
God nothing with Conor would surprise me. It is not what I would want to have happen but it wouldn’t surprise me.

Q
Has he come out and tried to bet you anything that he is going to fulfill this two to four round prediction?

D. White
No he hasn’t tried. Listen I am on his side on this thing. I want him to win. I expect him to win. I expect him to knock Floyd Mayweather out. So no, not that I didn’t think that he could beat Chad Mendes.

It is not like I am going to bet against another one of my guys. Which by the way, we didn’t make that bet but we did pay him.

Q
It was ruled today that you guys were going to be an official promoter for this event. So what additional leverage does that give you guys? How else are you able to now help push this as you said to a billion homes worldwide?

D. White
Yes I think that we have done a good job with working with SHOWTIME and they do the things that they are good at. We do the things that we are good at. And it really helped.

There are a lot of things that boxing doesn’t do. For instance, most of the times you are dealing with the network. Networks aren’t too excited to go OTT. Now a big thing that they are into.

We have the capabilities. We do it all the time. And I believe we are one of the best to do it. And I mean the numbers are tracking huge. We are going to do the numbers that everybody has been talking we are going to do.

The over/under line in Vegas is is 4.9 million. Everything is tracking right now to say that we are going to kill this thing. So it is looking really good.

Q
It was announced yesterday that you are going to have Tony Ferguson and Kevin Lee fight for an interim belt. That would actually fall within a year since Conor won the belt. So is there a particularly reason why you guys are rushing into the interim business again?

D. White
No because the thing is Conor has told me he is going to fight again this year. But I don’t know what is going to happen, you know. You can’t put these guys on the shelves all this time.

We will see what happens with this fight. That fight is going to move forward and we will see what is next for Conor.

Q
How much money do you expect Conor McGregor make on August 26th?

D. White
Well it depends on obviously what the fight does. But Conor is going to make a lot of life changing money. Money that will change his family’s life forever.

Q
Just wanted you to talk about the impact of social media on this fight?

D. White
Oh yes absolutely. When we did the world tour the numbers were off the charts. I can’t quote exactly, I don’t have them in front of me. But if you ask our PR team they can give you those numbers.

Great question it was incredible how many people. The first day, I can’t remember it was something crazy like the first day, the first stop in LA something like 12.5 million people watched it just on our Facebook alone.

Maybe it was between 12 and 20 million or something like that. I can’t remember. But that was just on Facebook the first day. So yes the numbers were massive.

Q
Even something like the Paulie sparring thing that just kept going and going and going. Do you think that added to the eyeballs that you are going to get the night of the fight?

D. White
Yes, listen obviously the whole Paulie thing popped up out of nowhere. That thing happened and went down. It is funny all the twists and turns that happen when you are promoting a fight like this.

Obviously he was saying all this crazy stuff for like five or six days. And then finally I was like you know what? I want to put out some of the footage here and just stop all this craziness.

When I put the footage out., just the footage on my Instagram alone it was both Instagram over a million. My Facebook was over two million and Twitter was close to two million too just on mine. That doesn’t include you know everywhere else it went.

Q
Are there a couple of things Conor, the person that people aren’t too familiar with that maybe that stand out to you?

D. White
Yes I mean Conor, the person is a very loyal guy. He is a good guy. If you look at the people he is around. Very, very, very loyal to his country and his people obviously.

And then his friends, the guys are the same guys that have been around him. He doesn’t try to go, maybe I should go train with this trainer or this camp or these guys. He is very loyal to his own.

He is very smart kid when it comes to fighting. His fight IQ is brilliant. Then he is actually a smart businessman too. The kids has made a lot of really good decisions and you know even when he deals with us he is a very bright guy.

Q
Floyd likes to say that Conor stole his blueprint. Do you think he did?

D. White
No the thing is that is scary is in a lot of ways I think they are very similar guys. It is not like you can just go out and say, I am going to act like this guy or I am going to act like that guy. Conor is who he is.

Every city he goes he is in a different Bentley or a different Rolls Royce. You have got to be like that.

Listen, I have never been a Rolls Royce in my life. One of the first ones I ever saw was Conor’s in New York. So you are either that type of guy or you are not.

M. Radmanovich
Thank you everyone and thank you to our speakers today. Dana White and Conor McGregor. We look forward to seeing everybody here in Las Vegas, next Saturday, August 26th at T-Mobile Arena for what is going to be a great evening of fights. Thank you everyone.

Featherweight Erick Ituarte Defends Title Against Alberto Torres Next Friday Night

ORANGE, Calif. (Aug. 18, 2017) – Rising featherweight contender Erick Ituarte (17-1-1, 2 KOs) of Santa Ana, Calif. puts his recently acquired NABF Junior championship on the line against Sacramento’s Alberto Torres (10-0-2, 4 KOs) on Friday, Aug. 25, from Omega Products International in Corona, Calif.

The 8-round bout between Southern and Northern California rivals comprises the “Path to Glory” co-feature promoted by Thompson Boxing Promotions.

Ituarte, winner of ten straight dating back to 2014, won his title in May after coming off the canvas to win a split decision over Isaac Zarate. Ituarte will no doubt receive a stern test from the unbeaten Torres, who like Zarate, is a southpaw.

“I expect Torres to fight hungry,” Ituarte said. “It’s a title fight. There’s a lot at stake so I have to make sure to buzz him early and let him know what I’m about.”

Torres, who started boxing after graduating from high school, understands what a win next Friday night can do for his career.

“It’s the most important fight so far,” Torres said. “I don’t take anyone lightly. I work out hard all the time. Ituarte is going to have a tough fight. I know Ituarte is going to bring it and show up prepared because he doesn’t want to lose that title. My plan is to feel him out at first and then go into attack mode.”

The 8-round main event features unbeaten heavyweight LaRon Mitchell (15-0, 13 KOs) of San Francisco defending his NABF Junior title against Michael Bissett (14-9, 8 KOs) of Tampa, Fla.

The featured bout on the undercard pits unbeaten junior welterweights Roberto Meza (8-0, 4 KOs) of Temecula, Calif. and Giovanni Cabrera-Mioletti (8-0, 2 KOs) of Chicago (6-rounds).

Watch the LIVESTREAM: TB Presents: Path to Glory on ThompsonBoxing.com or on the Thompson Boxing Facebook Page beginning at 8:00 p.m. PST / 11:00 p.m. EST.

FORD – YARDE DOESN’T SCARE ME

Ryan Ford says he won’t be intimidated by Anthony Yarde when the undefeated rivals square off for the Vacant WBO Inter-Continental Light-Heavyweight strap at the Copper Box Arena on September 16th, live on BoxNation and BT Sport.

Ford, 35, racked up 22 wins during his successful 10-year mixed martial arts career, and now the 12-0 Canadian is determined to prove he is the ‘Real Deal’ in the boxing ring by inflicting a first career defeat on Yarde.

“Everyone knows how hard I’ve worked for this,” said Ford, speaking to the Edmonton Journal. “This has been 13 years of my life I’ve been grinding to make it to this point in the fight game. The work I’ve put in the gym and on the road has paid off. My opportunity to perform on the big stage has arrived.”

Rising star Yarde (12-0, 11 KO’s) will pose the biggest challenge in Ford’s career to date. The Ilford powerhouse is quickly making a name for himself as one of the hottest talents in British boxing but Ford isn’t buying into the hype.

“He’s a proven fighter in the UK, and a lot of people are saying ‘who is this guy he’s fighting next?’. People don’t know me over there, but I can guarantee that on September 16, people will know me. I’m coming to win that belt.

“He’s got 11 knockouts. It will be by far my toughest challenge in the boxing ring, but I believe I will be his toughest challenge too. Yarde has never fought anyone like me.

“I’ve seen videos of him and he’s a tough puncher with knockout power, but I’ve never seen a guy press him. The guys he’s fought the last few fights have looked scared of him. I’m not that guy. I’m not scared of him.”

WBO Middleweight World Champion Billy Joe Saunders makes the second defence of his crown against Willie Monroe Jr in the evening’s main event; teenage Heavyweight sensation Daniel Dubois takes on AJ Carter for the Vacant Southern Area strap in only his fifth contest; knockout artist Joe Pigford takes on Kieran Smith for the Vacant WBO European Super-Welterweight title.

Unbeaten Rising Contender David Benavidez & Hard Hitting Ronald Gavril Battle for Vacant WBC Super Middleweight World Title in Main Event of SHOWTIME BOXING: SPECIAL EDITION Friday, Sept. 8 Presented by Premier Boxing Champions from The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (August 17, 2017) – Unbeaten rising star David Benavidez and powerful contender Ronald Gavril will battle for the vacant WBC Super Middleweight World Championship on Friday, Sept. 8 live on SHOWTIME in the headlining attraction of a Premier Boxing Champions event from The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas.

The SHOWTIME BOXING: SPECIAL EDITION telecast begins at 10 p.m. ET/PT and will feature two additional showdowns in the super middleweight division. Once-beaten J’Leon Love (23-1, 13 KOs) will battle Texas-native Abraham Han (26-3, 16 KOs) in a 10-round bout while unbeaten prospect Caleb Plant (15-0, 10 KOs) takes on Mexico’s Alan Campa (16-3, 11 KOs) in 10 rounds of action.

Benavidez (18-0, 17 KOs) has a chance to make history – at just 20-years-old he is aiming to become the youngest super middleweight champion in history and the youngest reigning world champion in the sport today. Gavril (18-1, 14 KOs) will seek to keep the WBC 168-pound title in the Mayweather Promotions family after it was vacated by his stablemate, Badou Jack.

“This opportunity means the world to me,” said Benavidez. “I’ve been working for his since I was a little kid. It’s all come down to this moment when I’m ready to take this belt and take over the 168-pound division. The time is almost here, and I can hardly wait for September 8. Winning the championship would be enough on its own. But the opportunity to be the youngest in the sport is a major accomplishment and the biggest of my life, so far. I have a tough competitor in front of me, and I know he’s treating it as seriously as I am. I’ve been working for two and a half months for this fight and I’m not overlooking him.”

“It’s been a great journey for me getting to this point of fighting for a world title,” said Gavril. “I have a great team behind me who pushes me every single day to perform my best, learn from my mistakes and perfect my technique. Those values have gotten me here and I am thankful for such an amazing opportunity. I will go out there and give it everything I have, I can’t leave the ring without the championship belt.”

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by Mayweather Promotions and Sampson Boxing, are priced at $100, $50 and $25, and are on sale Tuesday, Aug. 22. To purchase tickets visit AXS.com or the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas Box Office.

“In November 2015, I said that I had new blood for our industry David Benavidez, who would be the best and youngest super middleweight champion in the history of our sport,” said Sampson Lewkowicz, Benavidez’ promoter. “We didn’t cherry pick this opponent. He was the next available contender when Anthony Dirrell pulled out. We expect fireworks. We expect to birth a new superstar. The most important thing is to determine in which round Gavril will be knocked out, because I believe that we’re talking about matching a jet plane against a helicopter. So I expect a spectacular performance from Benavidez, who will begin his run as the new blood in boxing and will keep it going until he retires.”

“To be in a position to announce another great card coming just weeks after the biggest event in sports history shows that Mayweather Promotions shows no signs of slowing down,” said Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions. “We are thrilled to present this fight card on September 9, filled with tremendous talent featuring top contenders in the Mayweather Promotions stable. Gavril has proven to be a tough competitor, he’s on a long win streak with his last four coming by way of TKO, Love making his return to the stage is sure to excite fans, and the always exciting Caleb Plant will definitely put on show. This is what boxing is about, bringing together some of the most exciting talents on one stage.”

After delivering a highlight reel knockout of Rogelio Medina in May, Benavidez has now racked up a perfect 18 wins in 18 starts at just 20-years-old. The younger brother of undefeated Jose Benavidez, David picked up four victories via stoppage in 2015 and continued with four more in 2016 including blasting out previously unbeaten Francy Ntetu in June and tough contender Denis Douglin in August. Most recently, Benavidez began his 2017 campaign with a second-round destruction of Sherali Mamajonov in January. The Phoenix-native will look to make history in the 168-pound division on September 8.

Born in Romania, Gavril won a 165 amateur fights and trained with the National Team before turning pro in 2011 and eventually moving to Las Vegas to train at the Mayweather Boxing Club. The 31-year-old won his first 11 pro fights before dropping a narrow contest to veteran Elvin Ayala. Gavril bounced back emphatically with seven straight victories including then unbeaten Oscar Riojas and once-beaten Christopher Brooker. He scored a third-round stoppage of Decarlo Perez in April ahead of his first world title opportunity.

A once-beaten contender at 168-pounds, the 29-year-old Love bounced back from his lone defeat with three victories 2015 before stopping Michael Gbenga and Dashon Johnson in 2016. The Inkster, Mich., native earned wins over Marco Antonio Periban, Derrick Findley and Lajuan Simon on his way to contender status and will look for another victory to put him in world title contention.

Han is a former champion kickboxer and third degree black Blackbelt who hails from El Paso, Texas and enters this fight the winner of his last three contests, including a first round stoppage in March of this year. A winner of his first 19 pro bouts, the 32-year-old owns a victory over Marcos Reyes in addition to narrow losses to former champion Sergio Mora and former title challenger Fernando Guerrero.

A 2011 National Golden Gloves champion, Plant has begun to make his name in the professional ranks since turning pro in 2014. After picking up six victories in 2015, Plant continued his success with stoppages of Adasat Rodriguez and Carlos Galvan before going 10 rounds for the first time in a unanimous decision victory over Juan De Angel in August 2016. The 25-year-old from Nashville began training in Las Vegas this year and picked up a victory over Thomas Awimbono in February.

Fighting out of Sonora, Mexico, the 25-year-old Campa enters this contest the winner of three of his last four contests, including a victory over then once-beaten Paul Valenzuela Jr. last April. Campa has fought professionally since 2010 and won his first nine fights while also battling top contenders Sergey Derevyanchenko and Jesse Hart.

Former World Champion Shawn Porter Withdraws from Bout With Thomas Durlorme Scheduled for Mayweather vs. McGregor Preliminary Bouts on FOX & FOX Deportes

LAS VEGAS (August 17, 2017) – Former world champion and top welterweight contender “Showtime” Shawn Porter has pulled out of the welterweight battle against former title challenger Thomas Dulorme that headlines the Mayweather vs. McGregor preliminary bouts presented by Mayweather Promotions on FOX and FOX Deportes Saturday, Aug. 26 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Porter withdrew from the match due to personal reasons, which included a death in his family.

Top welterweight challenger and 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Yordenis Ugas (19-3, 9 KOs) will replace Porter and now take on Dulorme (24-2, 18 KOs) in the main preliminary bout on FOX and FOX Deportes.

“On behalf of Mayweather Promotions we send our prayers and deepest condolences to the Porter family,” said Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions. “In boxing we have to deal with curveballs that constantly come at us. Thomas Dulorme has been training hard and is ready to face Yordenis Ugas. Ugas is a tough competitor that shouldn’t be overlooked, and Dulorme is ready. The fight fans are definitely in for an outstanding show between Dulorme and Ugas come Aug. 26.”

“I have been training for this fight for a several weeks now, I knew at the-time Porter was going to be a tough challenger so I took training camp extremely serious,” said Dulorme. “Fighting on a card this big, you cannot doubt anyone in front of you. My new opponent doesn’t change much. All I can do is continue to stay focused and listen to my team and bring the best fight I can.”

“It’s an honor to be fighting on one of the biggest boxing cards in history and fighting in the same ring as one of the most famous boxers in the world – Floyd Mayweather,” Ugas said. “This is the type of fight that I’ve been looking forward to having since I came back last year after being off for almost three years. This will be my fifth fight in a year. And this is the second fight that I’ve taken on short notice this year. But it doesn’t bother me because I’m always training. Dulorme is a tremendous fighter. He’s very aggressive and very technical. He’s going to get my very best as I know I will get the very best from him. It’s really an honor to fight a quality opponent on a card like this.”

Saturday’s coverage begins on FOX and FOX Deportes with a one-hour Prefight Show at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT. Prelims on FOX and FOX Deportes begin at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT and leads directly into the Mayweather vs. McGregor event that will be produced and distributed by SHOWTIME PPV beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

The action on FOX and FOX Deportes will include a 10-round battle between unbeaten prospects Juan Heraldez (12-0, 8 KOs) and Jose Miguel Borrego (13-0, 12 KOs).

Representing Puerto Rico, by way of French Guiana, Dulorme last fought in January when he stopped Brian Jones in the sixth-round to pick up his second straight win after the 27-year-old had previously challenged Terrence Crawford for a vacant world title in 2015. Prior to his title opportunity, Dulorme picked up impressive victories over Hank Lundy, Karim Mayfield and DeMarcus Corley. He will look to make a statement on his way to another world title opportunity with a win against Ugas.

Ugas will enter the ring for the third time in six months when he faces Dulorme on Aug. 26. The 31-year-old Ugas, a bronze medal winner for the Cuban team in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, has been on an impressive four-fight roll that started last year when he scored a decision victory over then unbeaten Jamal James and followed it up by stopping then unbeaten Bryant Perrella in the fourth round. Ugas continued to take down contenders in 2017 as he defeated Levan Ghvamichava by decision on Feb. 2 before stepping in at the last minute two months later to stop Nelson Lara.

LUCIEN REID: “I’M READY FOR THE BRITISH TITLE NOW!”

Lightning-quick Super-Bantamweight talent Lucien Reid insists he is ready to challenge for the British Title despite having only had six professional fights.

Reid, 23, aims to take his record to 7-0 on the Billy Joe Saunders vs. Willie Monroe Jr Copper Box Arena World Title bill before targeting the Lonsdale Belt currently held by Frank Warren stablemate Thomas Patrick Ward.

“Every time my name is mentioned to other fighters they don’t want to know,” said Reid. “I’m ready to fight anyone, me and Adam Booth have clicked perfectly. I’m getting the very best sparring and the very best training.

“I helped Ryan Burnett achieve his dream of becoming a World Champion and I’ve also trained alongside former Middleweight World Champion Andy Lee. I’ve seen the dedication it takes to reach the top of the sport and I feel like I am ready to start stepping up myself.

“Sparring regularly with a World Champion and a British Champion has improved my all-round game. I think I’m ready to move into the title mix and Adam thinks I’m ready too. I’m good enough to bypass the Southern Area and English titles; I’m ready for the British title now!”

Former Repton and West Ham amateur standout Reid believes his old gym mate Saunders has the beating of Monroe Jr on September 16th. Ilford man Reid says he learnt a lot during the time he spent with Saunders at Booth’s gym.

“I always used to watch Billy train when he was at our gym. I definitely picked up a lot from him and I think he even picked up some bits from me as well. He was always impressed with my hand speed and movement.

“Monroe Jr is a very good fighter and looking at his Instagram page he seems to be training very hard for this fight. I just don’t see anyone in the Middleweight division beating Billy Joe when he is fully fit and on his game.

“I honestly think a fully fit and fully motivated Billy Joe would give Canelo and Golovkin serious problems. He’s one of the slickest fighters around when he is firing on all cylinders he’s got one of the best boxing brains in the sport.”

Rising Ilford Light-Heavyweight star Anthony Yarde takes on undefeated Canadian Ryan Ford for the Vacant WBO Inter-Continental Light-Heavyweight strap; teenage Heavyweight sensation Daniel Dubois faces Brixton Heavyweight A.J Carter for the Vacant Heavyweight Southern Area Title; Southampton knockout artist Joe Pigford squares up with unbeaten Scot Kieran Smith for the Vacant WBO European Super-Welterweight Championship.

Some of the very best up-and-coming prospects in the country including Welling Super-Featherweight Archie Sharp; Ilford Super-Bantamweight Lucien Reid; Fulham Super-Middleweight Zak Chelli and Erith Flyweight Jake Pettit feature. Terence Crawford / Julius Indongo Fight Week Transcript

TODD duBOEF: It is going to be an exciting night on Saturday. This will be our third event going live on ESPN and what a way to start with Pacquiao, Lomachenko and now the title unification of Terence Crawford and Julius Indongo. We are going to be in Lincoln, Nebraska this time as Lady Gaga is in Omaha. We are looking forward to Lincoln, as that’s where the Cornhuskers are. This is an incredible thing to be able to do. A lot of time people talk about seeing good fights – guys fight guys that are accomplished – then there’s other guys that want the challenges. Julius Indongo and his promoter, Matchroom Boxing, have come up in a meteoric rise in the past 18 months and Julius has performed great. Terence Crawford has exploded onto the boxing scene – going to Glasgow, Scotland and winning the lightweight title and coming back to Omaha in his first defense against Gamboa and winning in sensational fashion. This will be Terence’s ninth consecutive world title fight over two weight divisions. It is unique in that is a highly-anticipated unification. Only the second time in the four-belt era that two world champions have fought each other to unify the titles with the winner emerging as the division’s undisputed world champion.

FRANK SMITH: It is great to be here in Omaha with Top Rank and we are really looking forward to this fight – it is great when fighters want to take challenges. Julius has traveled all around the world – going to Russia where he won by first round knockout and then taking on Ricky Burns in Scotland in front of a huge crowd. Julius has been spending the last few days in Omaha – I know he is very calm and very relaxed and really looking forward to the challenge. It’s great to be involved in a fight like this with all the belts on the line, which doesn’t happen very often. I know Julius is very confident to go back home with all of the belts in hand. Terence Crawford is a great fighter and has shown it on many occasions and Julius is very calm and relaxed and looking forward to showing what he does and he has no concerns with the traveling. He’ll go anywhere to take on a challenge.

NESTOR TOBIAS: We are really excited. Julius has trained very hard for this fight. He is very focused and very comfortable in Omaha. We spent some time before we came to Omaha training at Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Boxing Club.

JULIUS INDONGO: Thank you very much for this opportunity. I know Crawford is a very good and tough fighter and this is a big event. On Saturday night I will give everything I have and my focus and my game plan and everything is in position. Just waiting for the weigh-in. I try and not say too much before the fight, which is something that I am used to. I prefer to do it in the ring when my opponent is standing in front of me so I can do my work. I have been in boxing for a long time and not many people know me. I believe this is the time for me to show the world that a boxer from Africa from Namibia can beat a guy fighting in his home in front of his people. This is the best way to do it. I am confident in my styles and techniques that I have learned from years ago. On Saturday night it is going to be boxing – I am not sure if there is going to be a knockout but I know I can do that if I have to. I can say now that I have trained hard and my trainer is always there.

TODD duBOEF: I also want to thank the organizations for accommodating this match because there was everyone trying that had fighters that had mandatories working behind the scenes to help put this unification together. We are all appreciative of everybody working together to help bring this match with the participants with all four titles of the organizations. We are very appreciative of them assisting Matchroom and Top Rank.

JULIUS INDONGO: Yes I would like to also thank the organizations and Top Rank and Matchroom for pushing this fight and helping the negotiations to make this fight happen – for making it all possible.

You have two titles now, but what is your view of the possibility of having all four titles?

JULIUS INDONGO: My view of this is that I have not focused much on that since I have been busy in the gym. I have not focused on anything but making sure of my performance on Saturday night. My focus has been in the gym to make sure my game will be the best ever. No one will ever forget about this fight. The organizations were involved in making this fight happen and I appreciate that but I won’t think much about having four titles until the fight is over.

How will it feel walking out of the ring with four belts?

JULIUS INDONGO: It’s going to mean a lot to me – it will mean all of the hard work and determination got that achievement and it will create more opportunity for me. I will travel the world with the four titles. I will take them back to Africa – to my country. I am going to be very, very happy.

How hard was it to get the organizations to go along with this?

TODD duBOEF: It was very difficult. We had to work hand in hand with Matchroom because obviously Matchroom and Indongo had two belts and Top Rank and Crawford had two belts and there were mandatories and everything that was coming into play. There were people that we had to appeal to and we said, “Hey, this is a rare opportunity that we are able to do this. Let’s try and work together and have a positive solution for the sport of boxing and I think we delicately managed it.

How long do you think the winner will be able to hold onto those titles?

TODD duBOEF: I think we should ask that question to the winner, not before we have a winner. (A), we don’t know who is going to win – Indongo thinks he is going to win and Crawford thinks he is going to win. Then at that point we will have to see what the order is, who has the mandatory, what order of fights and if all of the organizations can get together and if they can great and if they can’t it will be up to the fighter to make the decisions. And up to the promoters. I think it is premature to discuss that right now.

How has your life changed since you won the two titles?

JULIUS INDONGO: The thing that has really changed is – I do still live in my town in Namibia – and I try to stay focused and try do the right thing in the public. When someone becomes known to the whole country, most importantly I try not to roll with the wrong friends. I try and stay home and go to church after work and I do my training program twice a day. That’s the only way that I could say it can be done.

Do you live in the same place?

JULIUS INDONGO: Yes, that is where I am staying and where I train. All of the people are very friendly. We don’t have too much of a division within the people of everyone in the country, especially in the city. There is nothing that can distract me wherever I stay or whatever I do – everyone will know in Namibia.

How much better is Crawford than Ricky Burns or Troyanovsky?

JULIUS INDONGO: I cannot really say much on that because when I fought Troyanovsky and Ricky Burns they were both easier fights than I fought in the last fight, that I fought from home. The two world title fights that I challenged in were the best training that I have trained. I had never been as focused with the best game plan so it made it the easiest fights for me. They were both easier than we ever thought they would be because of the focus on them and the game plan.

Why were you able to focus more for those two fights?

JULIUS INDONGO: The other fights were happening at home and we used to be too much like let a lot of people in the camp – we used to share invitations – for the two last fights anyway. The fight was for the championship so there was something that we needed to achieve and change and to improve our image (if we want) to be known in the world. We had to have focus only on me and the potential and that’s the only way the world was going to get to see me. The promotion had known what was happening with me and letting everyone else know. So now everyone was going to see something new again, I know. I have no doubt. I know. All I can say is just only if maybe knockout come it may be late. But waking up, the day of fight, be skillful and focused – everything is in position. The crowd or the fans, or Terence’s home crowd won’t intimidate me – that is nothing, I cannot afford it, so I travel the same way – it is always the same.

Since you won in the hometowns of the last two titles fights how much confidence does that give you?

JULIUS INDONGO: Actually they are different conditions I don’t particularly mind because it is already past. My focus is that it is a blessing from God to keep me and not to let me wander in a sense, and to ask for a provision for myself, my president and my commander in the office that wherever I travel I will be representing all of Namibia. It’s like I have the whole country of Namibia on my shoulders issued by my president so I have to rely on the game plan and that is the confidence that I rely. So if I am stepping there I know that my country and Africa is on my shoulders and when the team travels from Namibia to the fight I can only focus on the fight so it motivated me a lot. So I have to focus only on this fight.

Where did you train for this fight?

JULIUS INDONGO: When I saw Crawford requested to fight the winner of the fight between me Troyanovsky, which is when I started training for this fight because we don’t have any power and the only way to rely on the big guns when they are requested for it. So when they gave us the offer we had to go for it so that’s when I started training. I trained at home in Namibia – where I have always been training. (He came to the States early and trained in Freddie Roach’s gym in Hollywood).

What have you noticed in the viewership of the fights on ESPN?

TODD duBOEF: One thing I am looking forward to on Saturday is Kurt Warner just finished his [Hall of Fame induction] speech so we won’t have to deal with that on Saturday. This is all part of a long term game plan of making these fighters come alive to the sports fan. Obviously there has been an incredible amount of promotion before the Pacquiao fight and mirrored with an incredible amount of promotion for the Lomachenko fight on August 5th and ESPN will be flipping the switch this weekend, taking the weigh-in live and doing all of the same consistent promotion and this is wonderful for the people that are interested in boxing. Everything has been terrific and to get two of the top guys in front of people that are watching the NFL, NBA and Major League Baseball are able to see the highest level of fights is just a positive step for the sport.

Has there been a change in demographic of who is watching the fights?

TODD duBOEF: I don’t think there has been a change in demographic I think the perception of the boxing demographic in the United States has been unfortunately tight-capped – an older demographic. We are looking at these numbers and obviously 18-49 is the number that everybody wants and even with Kurt Warner and the rest of the Hall of Fame going on we went straight up against UFC that night and beat them in both 18-49 and 18-34 which are the most important demos. And I think additionally, for ESPN that week, we were the second highest rated 18-49 program with the Lomachenko broadcast and in fact over 50% of our audience was 18-49 where baseball was about 32%. We think that the story that it is an old sport and old people don’t care about it, which was largely spun out by UFC years ago and I think to a certain point there was some truth to it – older demos were on premium channels – the fact is this is very positive, young, multi-cultural through the roof and we are excited to put this on this broad platform.

Is it easy to focus and do what you need to do in your homeland?

JULIUS INDONGO: I don’t think I have an issue with the fans or the population because it is already something I am aware of. All I have is to train and just be focused on Crawford and my game plan and do good on my preparation.

Indongo has come so far – a year ago no one knew who he was and now he is on this huge platform…

TODD duBOEF: This is not an outlier – this is boxing. This is what happens with boxing. This is no different than Azumah Nelson coming over on 10 days notice and suddenly getting in the ring and making a name for himself in the United States. People can change the tide very quickly in the sport of boxing and that happens because of their performances and we have to recognize that his is a global sport. This is not the Premier League or the NFL or the NBA and we are relatively isolated to a small pool. Indongo is a very talented fighter who has probably worked his whole childhood figuring out how to master a trade. And that’s Julius Indongo and what he did was, the door of opportunity opens and he steps through it, and that is the story of boxing. There are countless stories like that and I think this is not a miraculous one but really goes back to what makes boxing so special. People that take advantage of those opportunities and suddenly a diamond in the rough is discovered.

What do you have to say about this activity – this is your 4th fight in just over a year?

JULIUS INDONGO: It really means a lot not only to me but also to my promotion where I train. When I began they weren’t planning to produce such an event or any opportunity like this or even that matches I had back home. It is something big and something huge and something useful and it is an appreciation for what Top Rank and Matchroom has put together and I appreciate these opportunities.

TODD duBOEF: We have given Terence all of the accolades about how great of a fighter he is, which we all know, but I didn’t know he was an internet sensation now. You have to talk about the Internet sensation! I thought this was the Brian McIntyre internet sensation in the last fight from “Camp Life,” but at the press conference tomorrow you’ve got to show me your McGregor Challenge.

TERENCE CRAWFORD: It means a lot to me being it will be the first time that all four belts will be on the line at one time in the division’s history and it has only been done twice in boxing. I’m just ready for the moment and fight time this weekend.

Prior to Indongo’s 1st round KO in Russia, had your team ever heard of him?

TERENCE CRAWFORD: No, we never heard of Indongo and we never saw him fight other than the fight he had in Russia.

TERENCE CRAWFORD: Well, we wanted the Troyanovsky fight but he decided to go with Indongo so when we heard that he got knocked out, we looked at the replay and looked at the fight – that’s when we first took notice of who Indongo really was.

When he fought Ricky Burns who you are familiar with having beaten for the lightweight title, did you think you could make it happen or was it something Top Rank brought to you?

TERENCE CRAWFORD: We wanted the Ricky Burns fight at 140 as well but they didn’t want to take the fight so they wanted to take the fight with Indongo and perhaps later on in the year we could do the fight between me and Ricky Burns again but Indongo beat Ricky Burns, that’s when we took notice and said well he’s the guy with the other two titles so let’s see if we can make a fight with him and unify.

What do you feel about him traveling anywhere to anyone’s hometown to fight for titles?

TERENCE CRAWFORD: It shows a lot about his character and his confidence and his ability in the ring. Him being a two-time world champion in that short amount of time shows that he has a lot of confidence but at the same time he is a little older so he’s at the end of his career coming along so he doesn’t have a lot of choices for what he wants to do. He can’t wait around.

What do you think of Indongo as a fighter?

TERENCE CRAWFORD: Indongo is a good fighter. He is a good boxer – he’s got good legs and he seems like he can punch. He doesn’t let his opponent get on the inside and do a lot of damage to him

TODD duBOEF: Do you find any similarities between him and Postol?

TERENCE CRAWFORD: The only comparison I see is the height. They have two different styles. Postol was more straight up and down. Indongo is a little more elusive. I think Postol was a little more technical. Indongo can get a little wild at times.

Do you think Postol is better than Indongo?

TERENCE CRAWFORD: I can’t say that because I haven’t been in the ring with Indongo but I have been in the ring with Postol. You can see from the outside but once you get in the ring with somebody it can be a totally difference look so after the fight I can tell you.

What do you think about fighting on ESPN broadening you fan base?

TERENCE CRAWFORD: It can broaden the fan base it will give more people the opportunity to see who Terence Crawford really is. To display my talent and my skills to more people – I am just ready for Saturday to come so I can show more people who Terence Crawford really is.

BRIAN McINTYRE: I am just ready for us to get out there so Terence can show what he’s been working on in camp. I want him to unify and make history and the 140-pound division. We can also silence all of the critics that have been saying that his resume is not as good as some fighters. Not only me but also the whole entire team is excited. I know he is excited to, to get out there and show ESPN what everybody has been hearing – that he is a great boxer and a damn good puncher and how he can switch from both sides. So I am excited. I’m excited for the kid and I’m excited for his family. I am excited for everybody.

The winner will have all four belts, which is historic. Will that fighter also be considered pound-for-pound champion?

TERENCE CRAWFORD: Of course, I think I have been doing a lot in the sport of boxing and I have had my name mentioned in the top three. I will be looking forward to being the top one, or maybe two after this fight. It just depends on how people look at it. In my eyes I think I am top two already, so.

Has it bee frustrating to you that you haven’t gotten credit that you deserve?

TERENCE CRAWFORD: I try to not think about that. I can’t worry about what the person thinks about me or says about me. At the end of the day I’m the one that has to go in there and take the punches. A lot of people criticize me for who I am fighting because maybe I am not their favorite fighter or maybe I am doing better than their favorite fighter, or there is a fighter that they want to see me fight and the fight doesn’t happen or it does happen then I beat them. Then they say ‘oh the only reason Terence won was because he is short’ or ‘he won because he was basic’ – there is always going to be an excuse with those types of people.

TODD duBOEF: We are in a sport that gets dissected constantly by people that are haters, people that have agendas and at the end of the day when you have a kid like Terence Crawford who is brilliant in the ring, we just let the people decide what it is. We are going to be sold out in Lincoln, Nebraska and we just did 10,000 people in New York – we are not going to chase the game of people and bloggers and things like that that want to be hating because you will never win that game.

How many will Pinnacle hold?

TODD duBOEF: It is going to hold just over 10,000.

What are your thoughts fighting in Lincoln?

TERENCE CRAWFORD: I am excited about it being that it’s our state capital and where the Nebraska football team plays. It is a nice arena and I always wanted to fight in there. They brought me down there to watch a couple of games and I was always imagining it would be a nice arena to fight in. Everyone around there always welcomed me with open arms telling me ‘you need to come fight here, you need to come fight here.’ So I am excited that I was able to make that happen. It’s about a 45-minute drive from Omaha.

TODD duBOEF: Just imagine, between a 45-minute drive you’ve got Lady GaGa in Omaha and Terence Crawford in Lincoln – not a bad entertainment night in a small area. Brian are you going to the fight or Lady GaGa?

BRYAN McINTYRE: Well I am going to go to GaGa as soon as we knock this dude off. I know her personally.

CARL MORETTI: Terence is probably boxing’s most active champion at this moment. His last defense was three months ago against Felix Diaz and he fought in December before that and June before that. So if you look just before he won the lightweight title it may be eight title defenses in 27 months. I don’t think you can find a more active champion that has gotten better in the ring defending his title more than Crawford.

How important is it to be active?

TERENCE CRAWFORD: It is very important. I am trying to get my name out there and trying to get the recognition that I deserve. I’m still young and in my prime.

What does it mean if Terence is able to knock out Indongo on Saturday night.

BRIAN McINTYRE: That would be lovely – to do it in good fashion like that, you can’t ask for nothing better. You know if you look for a knockout it’s not there.

If you win you have all of the belts – would you rather stay there or move up?

I am at 140 now and come Saturday that is my main focus is Julius Indongo. We’ll see how the fight goes and after that double back around and see what the next move will be.

How is it when you have quick turnaround to training camp? Is it easier?

TERENCE CRAWFORD: Training camp is never easy. It’s always hard but at the same time, I just had a fight and getting back into the gym and back in the groove of everything. It’s tougher when you have a long period of time off because this time I was somewhat in shape.

It seems like you were having fun in camp. Is that normal?

TERENCE CRAWFORD: We like to have some fun in training camp. Training camp is always hard work but have fun, hard work, have fun, hard work – if you don’t love what you are doing then you need to get a difference job. We are dancing every single training camp that we had and play around – that is the different types of things that we do. In “Camp Life” it might be the first time that people actually got to see that outer Terence Crawford.

Is that important to you to get that out?

TERENCE CRAWFORD: It’s important for my brand but at the same time it is just I. I am not into publicizing my every move – make a video and say ‘oh this is what I do for a living,’ I just go with the flow.

If you consider yourself Number 2 pound for pound, who do you say is Number 1?

TERENCE CRAWFORD: Andre Ward.

Where were you when you first saw McGregor do his warm-up?

TERENCE CRAWFORD: I was coming from the gym and everyone was watching a video and I asked what it was, then I said I am going to try that. A couple of days passed then I got everyone together to do the McGregor Challenge.

What’s the best response you’ve gotten since that video went up?

TERENCE CRAWFORD: I’ve been getting all kinds of response – I have been getting hate response, prejudice response, I’ve been getting a lot of positive response. People are telling me McGregor will beat me up. I just laugh – we are just having fun with it.

He is universally recognized as one of the finest martial artists in the world today. Askren joined ONE Championship in 2014, winning the ONE Welterweight World Championship in just his second bout. Askren has since successfully defended the title twice, including his most recent victory, a first-round submission of young Malaysian star Agilan Thani in May. Sporting an unblemished 16-0 professional record, Askren seeks to continue his reign as champion, this time against Zebaztian Kadestam.

Zebaztian “The Bandit” Kadestam of Sweden holds an outstanding professional record of 9-3, and is a tremendous competitor with a wide array of striking and grappling techniques. Seven of his nine career victories have come by way of knockout. Kadestam made a successful ONE Championship debut last May when he defeated Luis Santos, upsetting the top welterweight contender via a come-from-behind third-round knockout. Kadestam’s resounding victory quickly earned him a title opportunity, as he is now booked to face the toughest opponent of his career in Ben Askren.

41-year-old Narantungalag Jadambaa of Ulaangom, Mongolia, is one of the top talents in ONE Championship’s deep featherweight division. At 12 wins and five losses, Jadambaa has faced the biggest names in Asian martial arts and has posted wins over notable ONE Championship stars Kotetsu Boku and Eric Kelly. Featuring incredible strength, durability and skill, Jadambaa is recognized among the very best in the world, having been the former ONE Featherweight World Champion. In his most recent bout, Jadambaa fell just short of victory in an epic rematch with reigning champion Marat Gafurov. Next, he faces Japanese grappler Tetsuya Yamada.

27-year-old Tetsuya Yamada of Kanigawa, Japan, is a promising young martial artist with a distinct ability to seek out highlight-reel stoppages. He made his ONE Championship debut in January of 2016 in an extremely high-level wrestling showdown against Eduard Folayang of the Philippines. A seasoned grappler, 14 of Yamada’s 18 career victories have come by spectacular finish, including six submissions. After a brief stint in other promotions, Yamada returns to the ONE Championship cage to take on former ONE Featherweight World Champion Narantungalag Jadambaa.

Chinese bantamweight contender Miao Li Tao is set to make his ONE Championship promotional debut against 23-year-old Liu De Li Ri Ge Hu. The two competitors are set to do battle at ONE CHAMPIONSHIP SHANGHAI in front of a packed stadium filled to the rafters with their hometown fans. Miao, who represents the Fighting Brothers Gym in Beijing, is a Sanda and boxing practitioner while Liu De Li, who represents Long Yun MMA in Harbin, specializes in Mongolian wrestling.

Beijing-based former professional boxer Xu Chun Yan is set to make her ONE Championship debut, and will take on 19-year-old Cambodian Eh Ya Nut in a showdown of talented young strikers. Eh Ya Nut possesses valuable experience inside the ONE Championship cage, having competed in the promotion in December of 2015. Xu, a former WBC Intercontinental champion, will test her skills against the Khun Khmer specialist in an exciting striking battle.

Making their highly-anticipated ONE Championship debut, “The Sweeping Monk” Chen Geng Min will take on opponent Peng Xue Wen of Guangdong in a three-round strawweight contest. Chen, a multiple time Brazilian jiu-jitsu champion, is 3-0 in professional martial arts competition, and is a mainstay of AMA Gym in Shanghai. Peng, on the other hand, sports a 2-1 professional martial arts record and is the former 2014 National Youth Greco Roman Wrestling Champion. The two warriors are set for what is expected to be a high-level grappling affair.

30-year-old Sagetdao Petpayathai is a Muay Thai specialist and a four-time Lumpinee Stadium champion who has won every major title in Muay Thai. He made his professional cage debut last March at home in Bangkok, defeating Malaysia’s Kelvin Ong via first-round technical knockout. Voted by Thai media as one of the greatest Muay Thai practitioners in history, Petpayathai is known for his highly technical knowledge in all of Muay Thai’s varied techniques. Petpayathai will be taking on Mahmoud Mohamed in his second bout inside the ONE Championship cage.

Mahmoud Mohamed of Cairo, Egypt, is a ONE Championship lightweight competitor with a 4-4-1 professional martial arts record. He made his promotional debut in January of 2016, showcasing well-rounded striking and grappling skills against talented young opponent Christian Lee. In his most recent bout, Mohamed took on former lightweight contender Bashir Ahmad. He now returns to action seeking victory, but will have to go through Sagetdao Petpayathai to claim success.

30-year-old “Supermom” Miao Jie of Shanghai, China is a professional martial artist with a 2-1 record. A talented grappler, Miao recently placed third overall as a purple belt at the 2017 IBJJF World Championships in Long Beach, California, USA. Looking to make a name for herself in Asia’s premier martial arts organization, Miao seeks to showcase her complete skills as she makes her ONE Championship debut against Mona Samir.

Female flyweight competitor Mona Samir of Cairo, Egypt, is a professional martial artist with a 1-3 record. Samir made her ONE Championship debut in September of 2015 against Singapore’s Angela Lee, and returned to the promotion a year later to face Michelle Nicolini. Featuring a well-rounded set of skills, Samir is determined to claim victory inside the ONE Championship cage. Having faced the biggest names in women’s martial arts in Asia, Samir is ready to utilize her experience as an advantage against opponent Miao Jie.

22-year-old Singaporean lightweight prospect Amir Khan is a professional martial artist with a stellar 7-2 record. He is considered one of the most promising young talents to represent Singapore on the international stage of martial arts. Khan is currently riding a four-bout win streak, which includes one win by submission and three by devastating knockout. In his most recent outing, Khan needed just a little over a minute to finish Rajinder Singh Meena with punches. Next in line for Khan is the dangerous Jaroslav Jartim.

Prague-based martial arts star Jaroslav Jartim of Czech Republic will return to the ONE Championship cage following an unsuccessful debut last April at the hands of Honorio Banario. With a professional record of eight wins, six losses and one draw, Jartim remains a highly-capable competitor with tremendous finishing ability. Of his eight victories, three have come by submission and three by knockout. The Penta Gym Prague representative is set to face top Singaporean lightweight prospect Amir Khan.

Shanghai-based competitors “The Ghost” Zhang Ze Hao and former boxer Li Cheng Chao are set for their first appearance inside the ONE Championship cage. Zhang, a proponent at the AMA Shanghai Gym, is 2-2 as a professional and sanda and Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner. Li, representing the Dragon Warrior Gym, is also 2-2 as a professional, and comes from a boxing background. The two are set for a three-round battle on the preliminary card of ONE CHAMPIONSHIP: SHANGHAI.

Kicking off the action at ONE CHAMPIONSHIP: SHANGHAI are two promising young bantamweight prospects. Malaysian warrior Marc Marcellinus is set to return to the ONE Championship cage opposite Vietnam’s Tran Quang Loc. Marcellinus has already competed twice for the promotion, taking on Singapore’s Stephen Langdown in 2013 and Thailand’s Anatpong Bunrad in 2014. After a long break from professional competition, Marcellinus returns to face Tran, an exciting prospect from Ho Chi Minh City who is making his professional martial arts debut.

MIGUEL COTTO AND UNDERCARD FIGHTERS LOS ANGELES MEDIA WORKOUT QUOTES

LOS ANGELES (Aug. 16, 2017) Former four-division world champion Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) hosted a media workout today at the Wild Card Boxing Gym ahead of his 12-round fight against Yoshihiro “El Maestrito” Kamegai (27-3-2, 24 KOs) for the WBO World Junior Middleweight title that will take place on Saturday, Aug. 26 at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. and televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing® beginning at 9:45 p.m. ET/PT. Also participating in the workout was the highly talented 122-pound contender Ronny Rios (28-1, 13 KOs), who will take on Rey Vargas (29-0, 22 KOs) in a 12-round co-main event for Vargas’ WBC Super Bantamweight time.

The workout also featured many fan favorites from the Aug. 26 undercard. Here is what the fighters had to say regarding their respective bouts at today’s workout:

MIGUEL COTTO, Former Four-Division World Champion:

“Every time that I get fit for a fight, I just find that I work hard. It was not our plan to have 24 months off, but the time off just gave me time to use the opportunity to spend with my family. I don’t think the time off prolonged my career. I’m going to be here until December 21. After this fight, I’m going to rest. Then were going to see what we have.”

RONNY RIOS, Super Bantamweight Contender:

“Training camp is the same as always, relaxed, and I’m enjoying it, having fun as I go. But, I’ve been training hard. I expect Rey Vargas to be coming forward the first couple rounds, and I expect a full attempt to fight.”

“I know they’re going to prepare for my jab and body work. The biggest challenge is the last week of the fight. You just want to be in there, when you’re in the ring, everything slows down, everything feels like it’s moving in slow motion. You want to fight the best and get to a certain level. It was a big surprise learning we were going for a title. I gotta go out there and make a statement. I don’t want to just go out there and fight; I want to make a statement.”

JOET GONZALEZ, Featherweight Prospect:

“I’m just training hard. This is my last week to train hard. I’m eating good, eating clean. It’s easy to make weight. I gotta be smart. I know he’s [Deivis Bassa] a veteran as he’s got a lot of experience. I know I’ve got to be ready. I want to prove who I am, who Joet Gonzalez is. I’ve got a great team behind me, and I’m excited.”

EMILIO SANCHEZ, Featherweight Prospect:

“Camp is going great. I’m working on my defense and offense, and my diet’s going well. I try eating healthy, but it’s hard sometimes. I’m sharpening my defense, those are the skills I’m working on. It motivates me that my family and friends are there cheering me on. After this fight, I’m hoping to be the main event at the Belasco and fight better opponents.”

LaManna and Sosa Chime in for this Saturday’s WBC Silver Latino Welterweight title bout at The Clardige in Atlantic City

Atlantic City, NJ (August 16, 2017)–This Saturday night, Thomas LaManna will take on George Sosa in a ten-round bout for the WBC Silver Latino Welterweight bout that will headline a big 11 bout card at what is expected to be a sold out Calridge Hotel in Atlantic City.

The show, promoted by Rising Promotions, is the 9th card that will be staged before a capacity crowd.

Both main event fighters recently gave their final comments before Saturday’s showdown.

” I’m just ready to fight and I hope he is too. I encourage people to come to this action packed, stacked event. 12 bouts featuring some of the hottest prospects and a title fight,” said LaManna.

“I think LaManna is a boxer who has not fought anyone of my caliber yet, and unlike me, I have fought everyone,” said Sosa. LaManna has been protected during his whole career, Do I think he will be easy? No. There is no such thing as an easy fight. He is his Mommy and Daddy;s baby. When he fought somebody with caliber, he lost.”

Despite his 15-9 record, Sosa knows a win can change his whole career.

“This fight is for the WBC Silver title, and would definitely change my career. Before I would just take fights because I needed the money to take care of my family in Cuba. I was too busy partying, and not taking matters seriously. Like my last fight with Anthony Young, I arrived three days before the weigh-in, and I was 21 pounds over the weight. Not only did I make the weight, but I went the distance with a formidable opponent. Not this timeI went directly to Cuba to begin training.”

In the eight-round feature, former cruiserweight world champion, Imamu Mayfield (26-10-2, 19 KOs) of Freehold, New Jersey battles Lamont Capers (7-10-2) of Hawley, Pennsylvania.

In six-round bouts:

Anthony “Juice” Young (17-2, 6 KO’s) of Atlantic City, NJ battles Carlos Winston Velasquez (25-29-2, 14 KOs) of Managua, Nicaragua in a welterweight bout.

Yurik Mamedov (6-0, 3 KOs) of Brooklyn. NY takes on Ariel Vasquez (12-18-2, 9 KOs) of Managua, Nicaragua in a welterweight bout.

Frederick Julan (5-0, 2 Kos) of Brooklyn, NY battles Tahlik Taylor 2-7, (1KO) of Freeport, NY in a light heavyweight battle.

Alvin Vermall, Jr. (11-0-1, 10 KOs) of Catskills, NY will take on Tracy Johnson (4-5-4) of Boston, MA in a cruiserweight affair.

In four-round bouts:

Joshafat Ortiz (1-0of Reading, PA will take on Sidell Blocker (1-8-1) of Pleasantville, NJ in a lightweight fight.

Ronald Logan (0-1) of New York, NY takes on Nahir Albright (1-1) of Philadelphia in a battle of lightweights .

Confident Williams dedicating first title defense next Saturday to local child who died in tragic drowning

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Aug. 16th, 2017) — Since setting his sights on becoming a world champion boxer nearly three and a half years ago, Jimmy Williams has never had to look far for motivation.

As a college student in 2008, Williams learned of the tragic passing of his mother, Belinda, found strangled to death behind an abandoned building. The case remains unsolved to this day, but Williams, the reigning, undefeated World Boxing Council U.S. Boxing Council Welterweight Champion out of New Haven, Conn., continues to fight in her memory, hoping one day to find the closure he’s sought for nearly a decade.

Williams’ mother would’ve been proud; the 30-year-old welterweight, a full-time truancy officer in West Haven whose wife is expecting twins in October, boasts a 13-0-1 record as he prepares to defend his title for the first time Saturday, Aug. 26th, 2017 at Foxwoods Resort Casino against Bronx, N.Y., vet Issouf Kinda (18-4, 7 KOs) in the 10-round main event, presented by Williams’ long-time promoter, CES Boxing.

One week from Saturday, he’ll have a second angel on his shoulder when he climbs through the ropes. Williams is dedicating this upcoming fight to the memory of the late Ben Callahan, a 10-year-old boy from nearby Branford who drowned in a drainage pipe one month ago while swimming with his two brothers in the Brandford River.

Williams is close with the family; the father, Dave Callahan, is a personal trainer at Shoreline Athletics CrossFit in Branford, where Williams works on his strength and conditioning. Through the years, Williams formed a strong bond with Ben. They often worked out together when Williams was in town.

“Great kid,” Williams said. “You see the faith of his family. I’m ready to go out here and be a warrior for myself and show that I’ll fight for anybody that’s lost somebody.”

As Williams prepares for the inevitable challenges of fatherhood, it’s impossible to not feel empathy for a family that suffered such a tragic loss. Confident as ever, Williams knows he’s in for the challenge of a lifetime against the 22-fight vet Kinda, but promises to retain his title, even as his challenger threatens to “bring the belt back to the Bronx.”

“I’ll die in that ring before I give up the title,” Williams said. “I train real hard. I know I’m a champion and I know everybody wants to take what’s mine and what I’ve worked hard for.

“I know where I came from. Nobody’s going to take this. I’m going to show on the 26th why I’m undefeated and why I’ve got the belt.”

The Aug. 26th extravaganza is a rare double-feature; the live boxing event, which features eight bouts, begins at 6 p.m. ET at The Premier Ballroom, and all fans who purchase a ticket receive free entry next door at the Grand Theater for the live Pay Per View showing of the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor fight in Nevada later that night.

“This is the only place in the world you can see both live boxing and the most talked-about fight in years in one place for just one price,” CES Boxing president Jimmy Burchfield Sr. said.

As an added bonus, the entire eight-fight card at The Premier Ballroom, presented by CES Boxing, will stream live on Facebook, free of charge, as part of the FIGHTNIGHT LIVE Facebook Series.

Williams’ title defense against the dangerous Kinda comes four months after the New Haven welterweight captured the WBC USNBC title with a resounding win over Nick DeLomba in Rhode Island. Williams has won nine consecutive bouts since his lone blemish, a draw against New Jersey’s Greg Jackson in 2013.

Kinda, a former North American Boxing Organization (NABO) lightweight and WBC Continental Americas super lightweight title contender, handed New England prospect Zach Ramsey his first career loss in May of 2016 and has tangled with the best in the light welterweight division, among them unbeaten Jose Carlos Ramirez, Ismael Barroso and Mike Arnaoutis, whom be defeated by unanimous decision in 2012.

USNBC title-holders have enjoyed great success in their careers. Nine current or former title-holders have gone on to win world titles and 28 others have fought for a major world championship. Since capturing the title in April, Williams has risen to No. 12 among welterweights in the North American Boxing Federation (NABF) rankings.

“He’s a warrior, just like myself,” Williams said of Kinda. “He didn’t come to lose. He came to take whatever’s mine. He knows if he beats me, it puts him back on a roll. He’ll be in grea shape. I’m just ready to go ahead and make the right adjustments and go out and win this fight, somehow, some way.

“It won’t be a walk in the park, but at this level where I’m at now, no fight will be a walk in the park.”

Also on Aug. 26th, both Sicilian heavyweight Juiseppe Angelo Cusumano (11-1, 9 KOs), a.k.a. “Rocky,” and standout Worcester lightweight Jamaine Ortiz (4-0, 3 KOs), who competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials in Reno in 2015, make their Foxwoods’ debuts in separate bouts.

The Foxwoods undercard also includes a six-round junior welterweight showdown between unbeatens Cristobal Marrero (4-0, 3 KOs) of New London, Conn., and Springfield, Mass., native Miguel Ortiz (2-0, 1 KO), plus a cruiserweight showdown between Richard Rivera (2-0, 2 KOs) of Hartford, Conn., and eight-time Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) vet Leandro Silva of Sao Paolo, Brazil, an intriguing, four-round crossover bout following in the footsteps of Mayweather-McGregor.

Aug. 26th also features a four-round middleweight bout between Hartford’s Jose Rivera (3-1, 3 KOs) and North Carolina vet Corwin Farmer (1-1), plus the professional debut of super middleweight Jarel Pemberton of Boston, the son of former world-title challenger “Sandman” Scott Pemberton, in a four-round bout against Nathan Schulte (0-2) of Woburn, Mass. Hartford welterweight Jeff Gonzalez, a two-time Western New England Golden Gloves champion, will make his professional debut in a separate four-round bout.
