Brand-New IBF Junior Featherweight Champion Jonathan Guzman to be Ringside Friday at Foxwoods

Jonathan Guzman (640x480)
IBF Junior Featherweight Champion Jonathan “Salomon King” Guzman (22-0, 22 KOs) won’t be taking any time to rest on his newly acquired laurels.

The Dominican KO artist won his first world championship yesterday (Wednesday, July 20) by stopping former #1 contender Shingo Wake in 11 brutal rounds in Osaka, Japan. Guzman’s power was simply too much for Wake, who fell four times before the end came at 2:16 from merciful referee Wayne Hedgpeth.

The iron-fisted Dominican could easily spend the rest of the summer celebrating the victory, but has no intention to do so.

He is quickly flying home from Japan in order to be ringside tomorrow (Friday, July 22) at the Foxwoods Resort in Mashantucket, Connecticut, to watch San Antonio’s Adam Lopez face Argentina’s Roman Ruben Reynoso on ShoBox: The New Generation.

Guzman’s intention is to face the winner of that fight in his first title defense.

His promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing, says Guzman’s victory has only created a new mission for the Dominican slugger.

“He wants to clean out the division now,” said Lewkowicz. “We told him to enjoy the victory for himself and his country, but he wants to go right back to work. That is the determination and love for what he does that has made him an undefeated champion with a perfect knockout record. I congratulate him for his first world title and for his commitment to be a true world champion.”

IRISH STAR CARL FRAMPTON’S THRILLING SHOWDOWN WITH MEXICAN WORLD CHAMPION LEO SANTA CRUZ LANDS EXCLUSIVELY LIVE ON BOXNATION

FRAMPTON-QUIGG IBF/WBA SUPER BANTAMWEIGHT UNIFICATION TITLE FIGHTWEIGH IN MANCHESTER ARENA,MANCHESTERPIC;LAWRENCE LUSTIGIBF CHAMPION CARL FRAMPTON AND WBA CHAMPION SCOTT QUIGG WEIGH IN

LONDON (July 21) – One of this year’s most eagerly anticipated matchups has landed exclusively live on BoxNation with undefeated Irish sensation Carl Frampton taking on unbeaten featherweight world champion Leo Santa Cruz next Saturday night (July 30).

The sizzling showdown between two of the world’s very best fighters has long been mooted but at the Barclays Center in New York on July 30th someone’s perfect record will be lost in a clash that on paper is a fight of the year contender.

Both Frampton and Santa Cruz are aggressive fighters who refuse to take a back step, making this battle one not to miss.

Belfast’s Frampton, with a record of 22 wins and 14 KOs, has vacated his super-bantamweight world titles to make the move up to the 126-pound division where he will challenge Mexican star Santa Cruz, 32 wins and 18 KOs, for the WBA Super world featherweight championship.

This latest challenge for Frampton comes hot on the heels of his one sided victory back in February 2016 against former world champion Scott Quigg in Manchester.

Frampton, trained and mentored by father and son duo Barry and Shane McGuigan has set his sights on conquering a second weight division, for the same title Barry McGuigan previously held during his illustrious career.

The acquisition of Santa Cruz v Frampton adds yet another mouth-watering fight to the BoxNation schedule, which is set to air a host of top fights over the coming weeks including Terence Crawford v Viktor Postol and pound-for-pound star Canelo Alvarez v Liam Smith.

“I’ve never been to New York before and I’m looking forward to this big opportunity to put on a show for new fans in a new city,” said Santa Cruz. “I always fight for the fans and I’m excited to be able to do that somewhere I haven’t been before. Frampton is a good fighter. He has power and skills and he moves when he has to, but he has a weak chin. When he gets caught with a good punch, he goes down. He doesn’t like pressure and I have that. I’m looking forward to putting on an exciting show at the Barclays Center and I hope I leave with lots of new fans.”

“I am in terrific shape, I feel fantastic in the gym and I am ready for the biggest fight of my career,” said Frampton. “On July 30 I will become a two weight world champion. I respect Leo Santa Cruz, he is a great fighter and person, but I am preparing meticulously to overcome any challenge he brings. I cannot wait to hear the crowd at Barclays Center. It is my first time boxing in New York, where some of the greatest fights have taken place. I know there will be a large number of fans travelling from the UK and Ireland but there is also a huge Irish American audience and I am eager to show them all what I can do.”

Carl Frampton’s manager and promoter Barry McGuigan, said: “We are thrilled that BoxNation will broadcast the biggest fight of Carl Frampton’s career to date against undefeated three weight world champion Leo Santa Cruz. This contest has all the ingredients needed to be fight of the year, as the all-action style of Santa Cruz collides with Frampton’s counter-punching and power. A Frampton victory would see Carl become the first Northern Irishman in history to win world titles at two weight classes. New York is a prestigious fighting city where some of the greatest fights in history have taken place so there could be no better venue for this great match up. Watch it live and exclusively on BoxNation on July 30th – fight fans you are in for a treat.”

Frank Warren, Chairman of BoxNation, said: “We are delighted to have landed this fight exclusively live on BoxNation. It is great to have Carl back fighting on our channel, the same place he won his first world title back in 2014. Both Carl Frampton and Leo Santa Cruz are renowned for their exciting and all-action fighting styles. This is a genuine 50-50 fight and one that has been talked about for a while, so we are very pleased that BoxNation will be the UK and Irish broadcaster of a showdown that has all the makings to go down in the history of the sport.”

Frampton v Santa Cruz is exclusively live on BoxNation (Sky/Freeview/Virgin/TalkTalk/Online & App) on July 30th. Buy now at boxnation.com.

WMMAA terminates head of judges Radmir Gabdullin

MONTE CARLO, Monaco(July 20, 2016)- The World MMA Association (WMMAA) has terminated its Head of Judges, Radmir Gabdullin, due to his imprudence, inexperience, and technical inability to evaluate Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) in the professional sector.

Regarding recent statements that he recently made in the Russian press, Gabdullin expressed himself disrespectfully to other colleague judges, WMMAA Board member Alexander Engelhardt and the Association itself, as Worldwide WMMAA President Vadim Finkelchtein expressed, “One of the key factors of MMA is respect. This is a line we should and can never cross. That being said, it leaves me no other choice than to release Radmir Gabdullin from his function. We also severely advise that the Russian MMA Union do the same. (The Russian MMA Union is a full member of the World MMA Union.)

“We are working hard on standardizing in all countries of the world, all continents, in terms of Rules, Regulation and Referees committees, including anti-doping.We are a real worldwide organization and therefore we also have to reflect this in all of the WMMAA committees. Also, Russia will be, of course, represented in these as part of the WMMAA. More information will follow soon.”

Finkelchtein, who as WMMAA president reserves any other actions towards the associate judge, noted that, during the November 4-6 WMMAA Congress in Macau, China, a board of judges will be discussed and created.

CANELO ALVAREZ AND LIAM SMITH MEET FACE-TO-FACE AT LONDON PRESS CONFERENCE

Canelo_Alvarez
Liverpool’s WBO Super-Welterweight Champion Liam Smith came face-to-face with Mexican challenger Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez for a second time at today’s final stop on the Canelo vs. Smith international press tour. ‘Beefy’ puts it all on the line against pound-for-pound superstar Alvarez at the breath-taking AT&T Stadium on Saturday 17th September, exclusively live in the UK on BoxNation.

The undefeated Merseyside hero is looking to make a name for himself across the pond when he defends his WBO World Title for a third time at the home of the world-famous Dallas Cowboys on Mexican Independence Day.

“This is a fight I’ve been asking for for 12 months. I jumped at the chance, it’s a chance for me to make a name for myself.

“I want to do it against the biggest name in boxing at the moment. Saul Alvarez is the biggest name in boxing. I’m looking forward to pitting my wits against one of the best in the sport,” said the 23-0 star, currently on an eight fight KO streak.

“I think a lot of people, will be surprised. I can’t wait until September and making a name for myself up there.”

Responding to the US media reaction which has seen him unfairly labelled as a “paper champion”, the 27-year-old said the American press weren’t in a position to comment as he’s never fought Stateside before.

“They’ll know in September that they shouldn’t be calling me a paper champion. I haven’t fought out there just yet, but they’ll know why [it’s wrong to call me a paper champion] when I do.

“I’m going in there to stop Canelo. If I don’t stop him, it won’t be for the lack of trying.”

Alvarez, 47-1-1 33 KO’s, insisted he will not be underestimating Smith, despite heading into September’s mega-fight as the bookies clear favourite.

“What can I say? Liam Smith is a great champion. He’s very strong and he’s very hungry.

“We’re going to prepare like never before, knowing what we know about Liam Smith. I can assure you this: we’re going to give the fans what they want to see.”

Tickets for Canelo vs. Smith will go on sale, Thursday, July 21 at 10:00 a.m. PT/12:00 p.m. CDT/1:00 p.m. ET, and are priced at $750, $500, $300, $200, $100, $85, $50 and $40, not including applicable service charges with a total ticket limit of 8 per person. Thomas ” Cornflake” LaManna eyeing a big Fall fight; but first must get past Valenzuela this Friday night at the Claridge in Atlantic City

Thomas LaManna (640x480)
ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (July 20, 2016)–This Friday night at the Claridge in Atlantic City, welterweight, Thomas ” Cornflake” LaManna will take on Engleberto Valenzuela in a six-round bout in a card promoted by Rising Promotions.

With a win, the 24 year-old of Millville, New Jersey is staring a big opportunity in the face against an undefeated opponent that is already penciled in for a September 16th date in Atlantic City.

Although, LaManna can not and will not get into specifics of that fight until he comes through the fight with Valenzuela as he is not taking the native of Sonora, Mexico lightly.

“Valenzuela is a guy from Mexico, who will come to fight. I will try to invest in body work early and see where that goes,” said Lamanna.

LaManna stepped up his training as he started his camp out west and worked with a high class of fighters in an effort to up his skill level.

“Everything went well in camp. I started out in Las Vegas and worked with 2012 Olympic Gold medal winner Ryota Murata. Originally I was not going to fight because of the fight in September, But I was feeling good, so we are ready to put on a great performance.”

This is the fourth fight card for Rising Promotions at The Claridge. The Promotional company headed by Thomas and his mother Debbie. Putting on a show where LaManna is promoting is a daunting task as he must find time to take care of all aspects in putting a show together, but also train properly for a high-class professional boxing match.

“At times it is difficult to train and work on the promotional aspects of the show. But I am intelligent enough to oversee that everyone is doing their job. We have had three shows and I have fought on two of them, and everything has gone well for us and me in the ring as well. If there is a problem, I fix it, but I am a fighter first. The training is most important. That get’s taken care of first, and then I take care of the promotional end of things.”

Andre Ward vs Alexander Brand Final International Media Conference Call Transcript

Andre Ward
Operator: Ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon and welcome to the Andre Ward vs. Alexander Brand call. Your host today is Michael Yormark, President & Chief of Branding and Strategy, Roc Nation. We will begin now.

Michael Yormark: Good afternoon everybody and thank you so much for participating today. Roc Nation Sports is excited to announce that Two-Time World Champion and top rated pound-for-pound fighter Andre Ward will return to the ring on Saturday, August 6, to continue his conquest of the light heavyweight division when he takes on power punching Columbian Alexander Brand at Oracle Arena in Ward’s hometown of Oakland, California.

This 12-round fight will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing beginning at 10:35 p.m. Eastern and Pacific. Tickets are priced at $250, $120, $90, $40 and $30, not including applicable service charges and taxes and are on sale now and available at Ticketmaster locations, online at Ticketmaster.com, and charged by phone at 1-800-745-3000. Ward versus Brand is presented by Roc Nation Sports and sponsored by Corona Extra, the motion picture HANDS OF STONE: The True Story of Roberto Duran, Corporate Travel Management Solutions (CTMS), Brand Jordan, Verizon, Shoe Palace, Ticketmaster and The Clorox Company, supporting the Bay Area community for over 100 years.

Before we introduce the fighters, I would like to acknowledge and thank several people who have been instrumental in getting this fight made. Number one, Andre’s management team of James Prince and Josh Dubin, Executive Vice President of HBO Sports, Peter Nelson and his terrific team, and of course the entire team at Oracle Arena, one of the premier venues in the country and our home away from home over the last year and now the new home of another Roc Nation star athlete, Kevin Durant.

Let’s introduce our fighters. He is the last U.S. Olympic boxer to win gold, having done so at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. His list of victories reads like a who’s who of the super-middleweight division including Carl Froch, Mikkel Kessler, Arthur Abraham; all of who he defeated on route to winning the Super 6. He also dominated and knocked out former light heavyweight world champion, Chad Dawson, in their 2012 showdown. In his last fight, he dominated formerly undefeated Cuban Sullivan Barrera. He is the pride of Oakland, California, a family man, a youth athlete role model.

On August 6, he takes on his second opponent in the light heavyweight division as he continues his collision course toward a date with unified light heavyweight champion, Sergey Kovalev. It is my pleasure to introduce the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, the face of the light heavyweight division, and an athlete Roc Nation Sports is so proud to represent, with a record of 29-0 with 15 KOs, a man who hasn’t lost a fight since the age of 13, from Oakland, California, Mr. Andre Ward. Andre would you like to say a few words?

Andre Ward: Wow, that’s a pretty powerful intro, Michael. I appreciate it, man! That’s almost like my ring entrance and probably the best one that I’ve ever had on a conference call. As always I’m preparing my body and my mind, my spirit for war and in this case it will be August 6. I’m ready. I’m just excited to be active and I’m ready to answer any questions you guys have.

Operator: Our first question comes from Brad Marchetti from ESPN2 News.

Brad Marchetti: You’ve had some shoulder problems and, you know, your knees – there has been talk that your knees are bothering you, just wondering if these injuries have made you, like a great basketball player, have to fight in a different way or adjust your style or anything?

Andre Ward: I don’t know who your endorsers are but I’m fine and I’ve said that at the outset and that’s still the case.

Brad Marchetti: No lingering effects from the shoulder injury?

Andre Ward: No, my shoulder is fine. My body is fine, you know, I’ve put in my time in this sport, man. I’ve been a professional for over 10 years now, I fought as an amateur for over 10 years, I’ve put in my time. I’ve paid the top pavement; I’ve gone the rounds. You are going to have things that happen. You manage it as best you can and you move on but as of right now, the rumors, wherever they are coming from, are not accurate. I feel good and I hopefully will stay that way.

Operator: Our next question is from Mitch Abramson with Ringtv.com, Mitch please go ahead.

Mitch Abramson: I’m sure you probably knew this question was coming but did you watch Sergey Kovalev fight last night and what was your reaction if you did?

Andre Ward: No I did not watch it. He’s not my next opponent. It is obviously the end game and what we’re trying to get but I didn’t watch it. I have to compartmentalize what I have to do right now. That’s just kind of how I operate and how I stay focused. I don’t want to juggle two opponents right now. I have to focus on one guy and that’s Alexander Brand on August 6. I will not take him lightly. If I’m not successful August 6, there is no fight down the road with me and Kovalev and I’m very clear about that it’s not just a fight for me. It’s very important for me to look good in that fight, to my standard and to my team’s standard. I have a certain amount of pressure on myself to go out there, perform and hopefully, look good doing it. So my team has looked at it, they are doing their due diligence but no, I personally have not looked at it.

Mitch Abramson: Brand is not a very well-known guy. I know he’s been around for a while but is there any issue for you in terms of trying to get motivated for a name like Alexander Brand based on some other big fights that you’ve been a part of in your career?

Andre Ward: No motivation issue for me which is a good thing. It would really suck to have that mindset; be up and down based upon who the opponent is. Whether it’s a tune-up fight or contender or a champion, I’ve always had the mindset to go prepared. I know it sounds cliché but that’s just how I’m wired.

I’m very competitive and I want to look good every time. I want to give my fans what they come to see and to give the live audience viewing on HBO a great show. And in order to do that, I have to be in tiptop shape and mentally locked in. I don’t want to be a guy who wins but doesn’t look good because in my mind, I’ll know that I cut corners and didn’t prepare.

Mitch Abramson: Thanks, Andre. I have one question for Michael.

Hey Michael, I know this might not be the best place to ask you this question but when Andre was first announced as a Roc Nation client, Dave Itskowitch had just come on board and he abruptly resigned last week, and I’m just curious if you wanted to comment at all about what led to Dave stepping down from his position.

Michael Yormark: As I said last week, we appreciate the contributions of David. We parted ways and we wish him the very best of luck. As it related to Roc Nation boxing, our boxing division wasn’t based on one guy and we are super excited about the future. We are going to be one of the busiest promoters during the second half of the year.

We are really focused on Andre, obviously the big fight on August 6, and what we hope will be an incredible match on November 19. We are moving forward and we are excited about that future. Again, we wish David all the best but Roc Nation Sports, Roc Nation boxing, is much bigger than David Itskowitch.

Mitch Abramson: Thanks Michael, last thing on David, will his position be replaced and if so, do you have someone to fill in his role?

Michael Yormark: Are you looking for a job?

Mitch Abramson: If you are hiring, sure, why not?

Michael Yormark: No listen, we are going to get through August 6. We are going to address what the needs are within our boxing division and then we will determine how we replace David but you know, we’ve got a very, very busy second half of 2016. We are looking forward to it and we will staff up accordingly.

Operator: I would like to remind everyone that we do have Michael Yormark available for questions as well. Our next question is from Brad Marchetti with ESPN2 News.

Brad Marchetti: Andre, you were a gold medalist and I just wanted to know how you felt about the professionals being able to compete in the Olympics this year?

Andre Ward: It can go either way, there are a lot of varying opinions out there. I haven’t given it too much thought but there’s the argument that it’s not fair for the pros to come and fight guys who are amateurs, and potentially, you take a top spot from them. The other side of it is in a three round fight, there are a lot of top amateurs who can probably beat some of the pros who are used to going 10 and 12 because it takes pros, who in spite of their distance, some time to warm up and get going, and if you get a kid with a lot of talent and ability, you know, he can get by in a three round fight. So it’s risky for pros as well. But in terms of an overall stance on it, I’m kind of indifferent towards it at the moment. It’s interesting though for sure.

Brad Marchetti: Do you consider yourself the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world?

Andre Ward: That’s not really something that I’ve ever given myself. I’m just not the guy who is going to crown myself the best, that’s just not how I roll. I know what type of ability I have. I know what I’ve accomplished. That is clear. And I know what I want to accomplish at the end of the day.

Brad Marchetti: Last question, I remember you fought a guy named Mikkel Kessler and to me, Kovalev fights with a lot of similarities to him. I remember you took that guy aside and roughed him up on the inside. Having seen Kovalev fight, would you take that same strategy towards him?

Andre Ward: It’s tough to say. I’m going to be honest, it’s literally fight to fight with me. I have not given myself any time to think about Kovalev. I have plenty of time to get ready for Kovalev. That is where you have slipups. That is where you have upsets. That is where you have bad performances, when you start to look ahead and you say, I am not looking ahead, but then mentally, you are. So, I just try to block it out. I’m really good at doing that; it’s just something that I’m not trying to entertain, right now. Kovalev is not my next opponent. Come August 7th, I will begin to think about, Sergey Kovalev and what needs to be done to beat him and to get those belts.

Operator: Our next question is from Eddie Goldman with No Holds Barred.

Eddie Goldman: Andre, I’d like to know what you know about Brand because he’s not that well-known and from what I see from his record, he is 39. He’s only had one loss and that was an eight round split decision to Badou Jack who holds one of the 168 pound titles, a couple of years ago. Brand has fought virtually most of his fights in Colombia and virtually all of them at super middleweight. Badou Jack is the one name that I think we could recognize but a lot of unrecognizable names. What do you know about him? Have you watched tapes of him and what can we expect?

Andre Ward: Let me start out by saying that Roc Nation and my management team, James Prince and Josh Dubin, had a list of guys that we went through. We started at the top and that’s just how Virgil Hunter has always done it. That’s what I am accustomed to, not just picking the best guy on the list for the sake of picking him, but picking a guy who is going to give you the work that you need, and Virgil is a firm believer that if it’s a list of five guys and we’ve got two top guys, those are the guys you need to be fighting.

Guys just were falling off and I’m talking undefeated contenders and prospects that had great opportunities and for one reason or another fell through. I’m not going to name his name but one guy fell through because he didn’t want to take the vital testing, and so it was stuff like that, and then we got to a point where we started to go down the list and Brand was available and Brand is going to bring it. Don’t get me wrong. Like you said, regardless of his age, he’s no bum. He’s the type of guy who puts his head down and swings for the fences. Those are very dangerous guys, and to be honest with you, it’s easier fighting the top guys with more form and more technique than it is fighting a guy who has nothing to lose.

It’s a dangerous fight. It’s a fight that I have to be on point for and that’s just how the cookie crumbles.

Eddie Goldman: Have you watched tape on him? He’s never been knocked out. His one loss was a split decision in Las Vegas too, by the way.

Andre Ward: Yeah, I’ve seen tape on him and like I said, he’s a guy that swings for the defensive. He loads up on a lot of shots. He doesn’t have a lot of nuance about him. He’s not trying to set things up. He’s just swinging hard, that’s what he does. He’ll try to move and get some space when he wants to rest. Because of different things like that even if he gets hit with a good shot, he is able to survive. He’ll use his legs so he does various things and is awkward so that’s something that I’m going have to overcome. I’m going to have to be disciplined. I’m going to have to be really determined just to let him do everything that he is going to do, however he does it, and stay locked in on hitting him and hitting him until the fight is over, and hopefully, being the first to stop him.

Eddie Goldman: Do you have in the back of your mind the need to make a statement? Because you said you haven’t seen Kovalev and Chilemba and although Kovalev won, most people felt it was not one of Kovalev’s better performances. It went the distance and a lot of people said during and after the fight that he is tailor made for you. Do you feel the need to make a statement in this fight because people are going to make comparisons about how you do in this fight versus how he did against Chilemba?

Andre Ward: I’m not really too interested in trying to change any minds, leading up to this fight, about Kovalev. It’s not about public opinion. It’s not about any of those things, you know? At the end of the day, it’s about the opinions after the fight and you walking away with those belts and winning that fight, that’s the ultimate opinion changer. If I’m honest, some of the people who are talking down on Kovalev right now and are saying that he’s tailor-made for war are the same people who were saying that Kovalev was going to kill me, asking why am I taking this fight and those kind of things. So opinions come with the wind, it just depends on the day, it depends on the weather, and that’s kind of, unfortunately, how we are as people a lot of the time.

I can look phenomenal in my next fight and people will say, “Ward demolished this guy, Brand, who’s never been knocked out” and “Kovalev did this,” but that’s not guaranteed for what will happen in November. At the end of the day, I’m not putting any stock into what Kovalev did or didn’t do. He’s still the guy that everyone said he is and it’s unfortunate for him, being a guy who started as a puncher, because he’s got a lot of pressure on him. When he does go the distance, everybody scratches their head and they ask what’s wrong with Kovalev? There’s a lot of pressure on the guy but that comes with the territory. You’re not going to knock everybody out so, not too much stock into what’s being said at all.

Operator: Our next question is from Distinio Lois with Black Star News.

Distinio Lois: From the ring to the broadcast booth, will there more broadcasting for you or is your full concentration on your boxing career?

Andre Ward: I’m studying the sport that I’m involved in and it’s a beautiful thing. You need a break mentally, sometimes. I’m not a gym rat, I just try to outwork everybody when I’m in the gym so sometimes, I need time to get away and clear my mind. Broadcasting is a tremendous outlet for me and I love it. I’m not sure if I’ll be doing any between this fight and my November fight but we’ll see.

Distinio Lois: You have a tremendous broadcasting voice and a future in radio when you hang up your gloves.

Andre Ward: Thank you so much, it means a lot.

Distinio Lois: As a fighter, are you thinking, “I am training to fight Alexander Brand a certain way because I have an idea how he fights but if Plan A doesn’t work, there’s always the possibility of switching over to Plan B and Plan C?”

Andre Ward: Yes, actually, 100%.

Distinio Lois: Your days in the Olympics, do you think about them, and do you feel that that experience was a stepping stone into the pros and the success that you are? Was it good preparatory experience?

Andre Ward: Of course. I think about it all the time. I draw on that time and those experiences, those emotions, those feelings that I had, the things I had to overcome. It’s different but it’s all the same; as a professional, it’s a different format in terms of the fights and the caliber of the opposition, but it’s still the same test, same doubters, same things you’re trying to accomplish and overcome so 100%, I draw on those things and it’s good and bad, maybe bad isn’t the right word, but it definitely can give you a boost coming into the pros for a lot of reasons like financially, confidence-wise. But then you also have to deal with the extra added pressure of having a bullseye on your back and being a Gold Medalist which is and of itself extremely, extremely hard to deal with because no matter who you fight, no matter where you go, you are the Olympic Gold Medalist, and if a guy even remotely looks good against you, has a good round against you, everybody is looking at it like what happened to the Gold Medalist? So, that’s a lot of pressure to deal with but I’ve been fortunate to learn how to deal with that and to compete under that type of pressure so that now it’s just second nature.

Distinio Lois: Are you comfortable and happy, finally with a promotional company like Roc Nation that you can now just focus on the business of boxing, not have to worry about managerial problems and contracts, and can focus steadily on your career?

Andre Ward: Of course, the thing is I’ll forever be grateful to Dan Goossen and his company. They got me started, they took the first chance on me when I came out of the Olympics and we’ve had a great relationship. I consider Dan family and I still love his family to this day, but sometimes families fight and you have issues, especially when business is involved. Unfortunately, we went through what we went through but of course I’m happy that all of those tough times are behind me. I’m excited to be with Roc Nation Sports. I’m kind of the new kid on the block but someone who is not just here for the short-term but hopefully here for the long-term. They have everything that they need in house to build superstars and to build champions so I’m ecstatic to be with them.

Operator: Our next question is from Brad Marchetti with ESPN2 News.

Brad Marchetti: I’ve worked with a lot of young boxers and it’s a tough game. When you were on the shelf for two and a half years, did you ever feel like giving up?

Andre Ward: I don’t know if giving up is the right word. I was very close to walking away and I wanted to walk away simply because I would rather walk away if there was not going to be any resolution to my situation with my head held high and on my own terms as opposed to just slowly letting my career dwindle away without any resolution. I didn’t really look at it as a giving up type of thing because even when the lawsuits and different things were going on, I already had 19 years under my belt and that’s a lot of time for a professional boxer so I felt like I had done a lot of what I wanted to do but yeah, I was very close to it, I talked about it a lot, was very close to retiring. I thank God that I have great counselors, friends and people whose opinions I trust and every time I got ready to really do it, they would tell me to hold on, that it’s not the right time, and that these tough times are going to pass. They were right.

Brad Marchetti: Speaking of God, you are a very religious guy. What type of conversations did you have with God during those times?

Andre Ward: Well, most of them are personal. I just ultimately knew or felt that if I just held on, it was going to be greater later. I knew I was going to learn a lot, I was going to become a better person, a better businessman, and once I got past the retirement talk and feeling bad about the situation, I ultimately felt that there was a purpose with the whole situation.

I could probably write a book about that last two years on what I’ve learned, mistakes that were made and the whole process. When you get on the other side of something like that, it’s a beautiful thing because you can draw from that situation. I can’t tell you the amount of individuals that have called me; fighters, who seek advice. I have fighters sending me contracts and stuff, asking me to look them over and I let them know that I’m not a lawyer but I can get it in the right hands. We try to help because I went through what I went through, and a lot of times you go through things, not just for yourself but so that you are going to be able to assist others down the road.

Operator: Our next question is from Martin Gallegos with Bay Area News Group.

Martin Gallegos: I know you’ve gone through some long lay-offs but now you’re coming back within a five-month time span. What are your thoughts on being able to fight more actively now, more often?

Andre Ward: It’s definitely a good thing. It’s also a sacrifice because you don’t have a lot of time off and you are pretty much constantly in the gym and your mind is constantly on what’s next? I think people have to realize that even though, we kind of had a stop and go thing going for the last couple of years, we kind of lose sight of the time. I’ve put my body through a lot over the last 20 years with those layoffs, I may have gained a few years to my career. I wasn’t getting hit in the head. I wasn’t taking any punishment to the body. I was working out but I wasn’t working at the level that I would be if I had a fight coming up so I probably preserved my body for a couple of years and gained a couple of years. A layoff is not always a bad thing, especially, at a certain point in your career. If you look at Floyd, he’s taken probably two or three long hiatuses and I think they were necessary for him, mentally but then also physically because you cannot grind the body down for 10, 15, 20 years and expect to be whole and expect nothing to ever happen or to not have any chronic issues. Sometimes, the only thing that gets those issues better is rest and I got that, involuntarily, but I got it.

Martin Gallegos: I know obviously you are a big Warriors fan, what are your thoughts on Kevin Durant joining the Warriors and some of the criticism that he’s taken?

Andre Ward: First and foremost, Durant and I are friends. I’m obviously ecstatic that he is with the Golden State Warriors. I think it’s a very courageous move for him and Roc Nation Sports to make simply because the criticism is coming, he’s going into unknown territory, he’s going into an unknown land in the Bay Area and in many cases, he’s coming over to a rival and that takes a lot of humility. It’s a perspective thing, either the cup is half full or half empty. A lot of people are looking at it like a bad thing like how could he do that but the flip side is like wow, he did that, he had enough humility to say, “guys beat us in this last series but I think this is best for myself and I think this is best for my career.”

He left OKC which is very dear to his heart and I know it hurt him. Tough decision but he was courageous enough to make that decision. Furthermore, people have got to realize that everybody has given us the championship next year because KD is here but it’s going to take a lot of work and KD knows that, the Warriors know that, you know that, the coaches know that, the front office knows that they are going to have to mesh, they are going to have to work hard to get into a rhythm and figure out, how they mesh together. That is also a challenge and, believe it or not, it takes a lot of courage to take on that because look at the pressure that they have on them now. Everybody is saying championship or bust. KD and his team, they knew that going in. They know that all of these standards are going to be there so I just think ultimately, a very courageous move. I appreciate an athlete who in the midst of criticism can make a tough decision. I tip my hat off to him. It’s really cool to see.

Operator: Our next question is from Robert Hough with Fight News.

Robert Hough: Sometimes people see fights, ZAM-O, somebody gets knocked 20 seconds in the first round and that’s a great result for the victorious fighter. Other times, you’ll see fights that don’t happen and the analysts and commentators will say, “oh, it’s good for that fighter to get rounds” but I know a lot of the times, some will say things that fighters frankly think is nonsense. Do you feel like you need rounds? Would it benefit you for this to go longer than a couple, four rounds?

Andre Ward: I think so. I’m not going to argue if it ends in the first round or second round; that’s just kind of how it goes. I know this isn’t a sport where you know can play around and decide when it ends, so we’re going to go in there and implement the game plan. The goal is to get him out of there as quick as possible but if it goes the rounds, the rounds definitely wouldn’t hurt.

Robert Hough: You touched on this a little bit earlier, it’s a little bit unusual for you to be back in the ring so quickly – very end of March and now the very beginning of August – how’s your body responding to all this?

Andre Ward: I feel great, a lot sharper in camp, a lot quicker. It would normally take a little while with the layoff to kind of get the rust off but I came in right away, feeling really sharp and just knowing that I feel good a lot sooner than I’m used to. Feeling this good just speaks to the activity.

Operator: Our final question is from Matt Horan with World Boxing News.

Matt Horan: We’ve talked about your activity but for you how easy is it to get that same hunger and drive that you perhaps had earlier in your career at this stage? Do you still have that same hunger and drive? Obviously, you do but is it just as easy to pick up every day in the gym?

Andre Ward: It’s not as easy. It’s not. When you are in your late teens, early 20s, you just go. When you get into your late 20s and 30s and you’ve accomplished some things, you become very aware that you are punching your clock to go to work and it’s time to go to work. I’m very aware of that but I’m thankful. I’m thankful that I do have the drive, you know and I self-check myself and I’m self-aware. I pay attention to my intensity and my dedication, making sure that I’m doing the little things. Not overlooking those things whether it’s in your diet or your rest or your body work or whatever the case may be, and that those things are on point. Any type of extra fuel that you can get, you use that as well. You’ve got to find a reason to fight, you know, at a certain point in your career when you’ve put in time. So, all in all, I feel good and I’m happy about that because if I felt like I had multiple days and weeks or several months where I just couldn’t get myself going, I wouldn’t step in the ring. I would find another vocation or something else to do because this isn’t the sport for that.

Operator: And before we go, Andre, do you have any final words?

Andre Ward: Great questions, I appreciate everybody who took the time and I hope we answered all the questions that everyone had. I hope everyone got a chance to ask a question. Tune in August 6. I’m excited! I’m looking forward to a great year and happy to be active and happy to be back August 6 at Oracle Arena.

Operator: If you have any questions for Michael Yormark, please press Star 1 on your phone. Our first question is from Robert Hough with Fight News.

Robert Hough: You know with Kevin Durant, who is a Roc Nation athlete, there’s a couple of heavy hitters in the Bay Area. Ward is obviously a big KD fan, are the wheels turning at Roc Nation to talk about things that you guys can do with both of them?

Michael Yormark: Andre and I texted back and forth when KD made his decision and obviously, you heard Andre say that they are good friends. We are blessed to have both of them as part of Roc Nation so at the right time we are going to look at some opportunities that we might be able to create for both of them. Right now, Kevin is traveling and he’s got the Olympics in front of him so he’s not going to be spending too much time in the Bay Area. He will be there on July 26 for the U.S.A. Basketball Exhibition Game at Oracle Arena but we will start focusing on that, sometime in the fall.

Robert Hough: It would seem like a good problem to have, figuring out what to do with those guys in the same town.

Michael Yormark: Yeah, I agree. Pretty special.

Operator: Our next question is from Distinio Lois with Black Star News.

Distinio Lois Another fighter that you’ve had on contract for a long time, Miguel Cotto, when would be his next fight? The media is always full of rumors – one is that he may challenge GGG since Canelo refused GGG, is that a fact? Are you working on that or is this just rumors?

Michael Yormark: I think those are rumors. We are hoping to have Miguel back in the ring before the end of the year. We are working on that now and we are hopeful to have some kind of announcement over the next couple of weeks.

Distinio Lois: Do you have any opponent in mind or it is too soon to broadcast that one?

Michael Yormark: We are looking at a couple of opponents but it’s too early to disclose who we are talking to.

Okay, I guess that I’ll conclude this call. I want to thank everyone for participating. I want to thank Andre for his time during training camp for this call. Obviously, on behalf of Roc Nation, very, very excited about August 6 at the Oracle Arena, very excited to see Andre back in the ring, very excited about what is in front of us this coming fall and we look forward to seeing everybody on August 6.

It’s going to be a great fight. As Andre mentioned, Alexander Brand will come ready. He’s an accomplished fighter and Andre is going to have to be at his best to get through that night. So, come on out, see the fight, enjoy the action and again we look forward to seeing you and thank you again for participating on today’s call. Take care.

Operator: Ladies and gentlemen, that concludes your call. You may all disconnect your lines.

ALEXANDER BRAND MEDIA Q&A

Media Question: How do you feel about this fight with Ward?

Alexander Brand: I am thankful to be fighting in a great event, thankful to HBO and thankful to the promoter, Roc Nation Sports. It’s a privilege to fight one of the best, if not the best.

Media Question: Ward said it was harder to fight attackers like you, what do you think? Do you like fighting against technical fighters like Ward?

Alexander Brand: We will have to see. I don’t know if I will come out attacking or if I will counter more. It depends on how Ward will be fighting. But I will be ready. I will capitalize on his mistakes and make him pay.

Media Question: Ward said that you throw bombs, is that an accurate description of how you fight?

Alexander Brand: I can be a technical fighter, very uncomfortable to fight. I’m very complicated, not one-dimensional whatsoever.

Media Question: What do you want people to know about you?

Alexander Brand: I am an intelligent fighter in the ring. I can make adjustments easily. I’m a different kind of fighter than anyone else and I’m not going to make it easy for Ward.

Media Question: What should American fight fans know?

Alexander Brand: I’m here to put on the best show possible on television and in the arena. This is going to be my toughest test to date and what could be better than try to beat Andre in his backyard.

Media Question: Tell us about your background.

Alexander Brand: My inspiration comes from family. I come from humble, working parents from Bogota. It didn’t matter to them what we did but that we worked hard, excelled and did our best.

Media Question: Do you think that you’re being overlooked by people in a matchup with Ward?

Alexander Brand: I don’t really care what people think. Like all things in boxing, you have to fight first. In order to ride a horse, you have to put on the saddle first.

Media Question: Critics will say that Ward hasn’t been very active in the ring, do you think he is showing some rust? Do you see this as an advantage?

Alexander Brand: I can tell in the first round if someone lacks preparation and time in the gym. I am smart enough to see how a fight is developing. The fight will develop itself and that is the best telling. As for Ward? I don’t think about his inactivity, he’s a great athlete.

Media Question: You’re 39 and fighting someone in his prime.

Alexander Brand: To me, age is simply a number, I am not going to erase the fact that I’m a 39-year-old man but I am fresh and will be in great shape for August 6. This is the challenge of my life. I am an experienced fighter, accomplished from the amateur ranks to the pros. Ward is one of the most accomplished American boxers but don’t forget that I am one of the most accomplished boxers in Colombia.

Media Question: Where are you training?

Alexander Brand: The Rock in Carson, California with Manny Robles. I was there for 10 weeks the last time that I expecting to fight Ward and will be here for 8 weeks this time around. The best place to train and learn everything about boxing is here in the U.S. The boxers and trainers here are like professors.

Media Question: Is your goal to fight Kovalev if you beat Ward?

Alexander Brand: It’s my second chance at fighting Ward and I’m here to ruin his party.

Ward vs. Brand is a 12-round fight presented by Roc Nation Sports and sponsored Corona Extra, the motion picture HANDS OF STONE: The True Story of Roberto Duran, Corporate Travel Management Solutions (CTMS), Brand Jordan, Verizon, Shoe Palace, Ticketmaster and The Clorox Company, supporting the Bay Area community for over 100 years. Del Valle excited for Tri State Area return

Bayamon, Puerto Rico (July 20, 2016) – As a teenager, Luis “Orlandito” Del Valle left his native Puerto Rico for Newburgh, NY where he resided for seven years. During his time in the Empire State amateur ranks, he made great strides in the ring and won multiple highly-competitive tournaments, most notably capturing the 2004 National Golden Gloves title.

As a pro, Del Valle had his first fight in New Jersey, hoisted the WBA-NABA championship in New York and Connecticut was the state that hosted his first appearance on HBO. Overall, half of his 24 professional fights took place in the tri state area and the bilingual Del Valle built a solid fan following. However, he hasn’t fought in the area since 2012.

On August 27, that will change when Del Valle battles an opponent to be announced in a ten round super bantamweight bout at the Bayonne Pavilion in Bayonne, New Jersey.

“I love fighting in the tri state area,” said Del Valle, the owner of an excellent 22-2 professional record with 16 knockouts and a #12 ranking by the International Boxing Federation. “I had a lot of great moments when I lived in New York and miss the local crowds. The support was great and there is a very large Puerto Rican population in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. I’ve still got a lot of fans in the area and they always ask me when I’m fighting locally again. Due to some of the changes in my career, I wasn’t sure until this incredible opportunity came up. I’d like to thank Roc Nation and LGM Promotions for making this happen. I’m hoping to fight for a world title in the near future and defend it in the tri state area.”

Tickets prices are $125 for VIP Table; $65 for Ringside; $55 for General ringside and $40 for General Admission and can be purchased by visiting: www.lgmpromo.eventbrite.com

Scott Burrell to take on Joseph Perez this Saturday at the Mohegan Sun

Uncasville, CT (July 20, 2016) -This Saturday night at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut, Scott Burrell will battle Joseph Perez in a junior welterweight bout scheduled for six rounds.

The card is promoted by Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing

Burrell of Brooklyn, New York will head into the ring with a record of 11-2 with eight knockouts.

Burrell has won four straight bouts which include three early wins.

In Perez, Burrell is fighting an opponent who has won two in a row and unbeaten in his last four.

This will be a good test for Burrell as Perez has a win over previously undefeated Augustine Mauraes.

“Coming off a win back in June, Scott is back in the ring Saturday to face off against Perez,”said Burrell’s manager TJ Marsé

Along with trainer Don Saxby he will have his twin brother Dean in his corner.

Unbeaten Worcester native Gray one of several New England fighters highlighting Friday’s ShoBox event

MASHANTUCKET, Conn. (July 20th, 2016) — ShoBox: The New Generation returns to Foxwoods Resort Casino’s Premier Ballroom on Friday, July 22nd, 2016 to celebrate the 15 anniversary of its critically-acclaimed series featuring a fight card loaded with New England’s premiere talent.

Friday night’s quadruple-header, presented by GH3 Promotions, CES Boxing and Sampson Boxing, features the television debut of unbeaten Worcester, Mass., junior middleweight Khiary Gray (13-0, 10 KOs), who battles Paterson, N.J., vet Ian Green (9-1, 7 KOs) in an eight-round bout, the first of four on the televised main card.

“I don’t take anyone lightly,” Gray said, “but come that day you’re going to see more than you’ve ever seen from me before. You’re going to see different angles, punching power, combinations. I’m going to keep my ‘0’ and put Worcester on the map. It’s going to be a great show.”

“I’m very proud to give this young man the opportunity to fight on national television,” added CES president Jimmy Burchfield Sr. “Listen, he’s got the opening bout, but we’re going to steal the show. I’m sure of it. I’m sure the phones are going to ring a couple of days after July 22nd. For now, we’re going to concentrate.”

Geared toward developing and showcasing young boxing prospects, ShoBox: The New Generation debuted July 21, 2001. Since then, 67 fighters who’ve appeared on ShoBox have gone on to win world titles while an addition 75 have fought for a major championship.

Tickets for Friday’s event are priced at $45.00, $75.00 and $150.00 (VIP) and can be purchased online at www.cesboxing.com, www.ticketmaster.com or www.foxwoods.com or by phone at 401-724-2253/2254 or 800-200-2882. All bouts are subject to change. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. ET. The preliminary card begins at 7 and the televised main card begins at 10.

On the preliminary card, New Haven, Conn., welterweight Jimmy Williams (11-0-1, 5 KOs) puts his unbeaten record on the line against 36-fight vet Antonio Fernandes of Brockton, Mass., in a six-round bout while fellow Worcester native Kendrick Ball Jr. (2-0, 2 KOs) steps up to face undefeated Meriden, Conn., southpaw David Wilson (5-0, 1 KO) in a four-round middleweight bout.

Friday’s stacked lineup also features the New England debut of CES’ newest protégé, undefeated lightweight Divante Jones (8-0, 6 KOs) of Augusta, Ga., who battles Philadelphia’s Anthony Burgin (9-1, 2 KOs) in a four-round preliminary bout.

San Antonio, Tex., super bantamweight Adam Lopez (15-0, 7 KOs), a six-time national champion now ranked No. 5 in the World Boxing Association (WBA), battles Argentinian Roman Ruben Reynoso (18-1-1, 8 KOs) in the 10-round main event.

Also on the main card, super middleweight Jerry Odom (13-2-1, 12 KOs) of Bowie, Md., the 2012 Amateur Boxer of the Year, faces 2008 Virgin Islands Olympian Julius Jackson (19-1, 15 KOs), and super lightweight O’Shaquie Foster (10-1, 7 KOs) of Houston, a finalist in the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials, faces Rolando Chinea (12-1, 7 KOs) of Lancaster, Pa., who competed alongside Foster in Mobile, Ala., in 2012.

Gray, who stars in the opening TV bout, faces his toughest test to date against the savvy Green, a two-time New Jersey Golden Gloves Champion. Since making his professional debut in June of 2014, Gray has fought 13 times in less than two years, including a stretch of six consecutive first-round knockout wins in 2015. The hard-hitting Gray stopped Texas’ Kenton Sippio-Cook in just 2 minutes, 2 seconds in their September of 2015 and recently defeated Florida’s Quentin Willis via second-round knockout in May.

“This is a big fight coming up. This is Showtime,” said Gray’s trainer Kendrick Ball Sr. “This is something I’ve been waiting for. I know what I’ve got. My fighter can fight. My fighter can punch. He can box. I don’t really talk shit when it comes down to him fighting, but I’ll tell you right now, I know what I’ve got. My fighter can fucking fight and we’re bringing the heat and you will fucking see it July 22nd.

“I’m overwhelmed over this whole situation. To be on TV, it’s a dream come true. I set short-term goals and this was a goal I set, but I didn’t think it was going to happen this fast. I want to thank CES and the whole team for giving us the opportunity to showcase Khiary’s ability and everyone else around the world will be able to see it. I’m excited for the night. Trust and believe, we will be ready.”

Friday’s undercard also features two 2016 U.S. Olympic alternates. Brent Venegas III, an Elk Grove, Calif., native, makes his professional debut against bantamweight Christian Foster, also making his debut, while New Brunswick, N.J., super flyweight Leroy Davila (1-0, 1 KO), battles Vineland, N.J., native Edgar Cortes (2-2). Both are four-round bouts.

GCP Signs South African Featherweight Slugger Lusanda Komanisi

Greg Cohen Promotions is happy to announce the signing of power-punching IBO World Featherweight Champion Lusanda Komanisi.

Known as “Mexican” for his aggressive fighting style, Komanisi (19-4, 17 KOs), from Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, South Africa, has successfully defended his IBO title twice since winning it via impressive fifth-round knockout over Macbute Sinyabi in July 2014.

As an amateur boxer, Komanisi was a 2006 Gold Medalist in the South African games, and 2007 Gold Medalist in the South African Championships at bantamweight. He trains at the All Winners Boxing Club in East London, South Africa, with former IBF World Super Flyweight Champion Zolani “Last Born” Tete.

“I want to be a unified world champion and fight the best featherweights in the division,” said Komanisi. “This signing will help my family live a better life. My country last saw and had a WBC green belt more than 15 years ago from Sugar Boy Malinga and Dingaan Thobela and now I want to bring it back! As a Featherweight I believe I am the next big thing in the sport of boxing and I am here to stay! Unifying against all the champions in this division would be a dream come true for me.”

“We would like to thank Greg Cohen Promotions for providing this once in a lifetime opportunity,” said Komanisi’s manager, Mlandeli Tengimfene. “To Komanisi, this partnership is a dream come true.”

Clifford Mass, GCP Vice President of Business Development, says the goal will be to put the African slugger into the mix. “We are very excited about signing Lusanda Komanisi. He is a huge puncher, and featherweight is one of the hottest divisions in boxing right now. We are looking forward to putting together some big fights for him, and helping him take his career to the next level.”

UNBEATEN HEAVYWEIGHT JARRELL “BIG BABY” MILLER, UNDEFEATED HARD-HITTING WELTERWEIGHT BAKHTIYAR EYUBOV MEDIA WORKOUT QUOTES & PHOTOS FROM NEW YORK

NEW YORK (July 19, 2016) – Promising, unbeaten, power-punching heavyweight Jarrell “ Big Baby” Miller and undefeated welterweight knockout artist Bakhtiyar Eyubov participated in an Open Media Workout Tuesday at Mendez Boxing in Manhattan, N.Y.

Miller and Eyubov, who both fight out of Brooklyn, N.Y., will be featured in two of the three fights of a ShoBox: The New Generation tripleheader on Friday, Aug. 19, live on SHOWTIME® (10 p.m.. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) from the outdoor soccer venue at Rhinos Stadium in Rochester, N.Y.

The confident, fast-talking Miller (17-0-1, 15 KOs), a consensus top 15 heavyweight, will take on the experienced Fred Kassi (18-5-1, 10 KOs), of New Orleans, La. in the 10-round main event. Eyubov (10-0, 10 KOs), a native of Kazakhstan, will be opposed by veteran Karim Mayfield (19-3-1, 11 KOs), of San Francisco, Calif. in a 10-rounder that will open the telecast. Undefeated bantamweight prospects, world-ranked Nikolay Potapov (14-0-1, 6 KOs), of Potolsk, Russia, and Antonio Nieves (16-0-1, 8 KOs), of Cleveland, Ohio square off in the 10-round co-feature.

Tickets for the event presented by Salita Promotions are on sale and available at www.rhinossoccer.com/ and http://www.etix.com.

This is what the Miller, Eyubov and promoter Dmitriy Salita said Tuesday:

JARRELL “BIG BABY” MILLER

On Training Camp…

“Training camp is going real well. I put on a lot of muscle for this camp, I’m going to put on a lot of solid mass, I am going to go in there and manhandle it. Like a chew toy in a dog’s mouth, I want to mangle it.

“I’m really committed to this training camp. I’ve made some changes: less cheeseburgers. I cut down from three cheeseburgers to one cheeseburger a day. Same thing, in the gym every day, not doing anything different. My main thing is my strength and my speed and we are going to see, come Aug. 19.”

On His Opponent, Fred Kassi…

“Supposedly Fred Kassi is the most durable guy I have fought in my whole entire boxing career. This is what they are saying and I tip my hat off to the guy; he’s been in some fights where I thought he won and he ended up on the wrong side of the decision. When he fought other fighters, he had three weeks training camp, two weeks’ notice. He had two months to get ready for this. I’m not a last-minute opponent. He’s going to come in ready and I’m not about to underestimate him.

“I’m a boxer-puncher and he’s more one-dimensional. He switches back and forth, he’s not pretty at what he does, but no worries, you can look at me, because I am nice at what I do.

I predict a fifth-sixth round knockout. Kassi is definitely a doable guy, but I feel once he sees my size and my pressure and the speed that I bring with my footwork – it’s going to be game over for him. I know for a fact I’m going to knock out Fred Kassi, fifth or sixth round. That’s what I do, I take your heart, I take your soul, I take your ribs.”

On Deontay Wilder…

“Wilder is a wild man when he gets in that ring, but at the same time if you watch how he performs, he performs at a mediocre level against mediocre fighters. If you stick him to a world professional athlete, like myself or top guys, you’ll see him bring even more. Not saying he hasn’t been in the ring with A+ fighters yet, but you can see all his loopholes in his fighting style. It’s just a matter of time before he gets really exposed and I hope it is with me because I want that behind.

“Shorter fighters do what they do, taller fighters do what they do. Deontay is tall but he doesn’t do what his body is designed to do; he’s trying to do something that smaller guys do, so that is going to be his downfall. Like I said, it is just a matter of time and I am going to break him in half, him and his toothpick legs.

“I was watching the livestream of the Wilder-Arreola fight and it was horrible. It was horrible because he is the heavyweight champion of the world. He doesn’t understand that he is doing more damage to himself than he thinks he is. He’s getting hurt. He’s getting hit. He’s taking some punishment.

“I want to fight Wilder. If he sees my style, if he sees my footwork, he’ll realize I’m no Artur Szpilka or Chris Arreola. And when I get in there, well, most of my fights end up in knockouts. I’m 100 percent power. Once I touch them, they are getting hurt.”

On Anthony Joshua…

“Joshua is overrated, overhyped. I am going to break that jaw of his. Definitely one of the weakest of the heavyweight champs.

“It comes down to the basics. You have a lot of guys that have a lot of punching power and basic skills and that’s not enough. Joshua is a basic heavyweight, a one-two fighter. I could cut that half way across the ring.

“I’d fight Joshua when the timing is right. I personally don’t want to go and fight Joshua just because I’m his ‘next.’ I think that when the time is right, it’ll be me and him at the MGM Grand on pay-per-view. One of those super sweepstakes fights, you know.”

On Tyson Fury…

“I like Tyson Fury, I still want to break his fingers in half but he is good for the sport of boxing and I feel like me and him for a main event will sell any arena out. He talks a lot of smack and he does back it up, but he is still a jokester and I am real. I will smash him if he tries to step on me in the press conference. I will knock him out, same way I will for everyone else.

“A fight between us two will be like Comedy Central on steroids, it would be bananas. It would sell out kind of like a Mayweather-Pacquiao … I feel like we can capture the heavyweight division and put it back on the map, just because of the way he talks. As an American heavyweight I feel like we have to take over American soil first. I’ll fight anywhere and anytime, but on the business side, I have to take over my country first.”

On the Heavyweight Division…

“They better get motivated now because I’m coming. I’m hungry and I’m motivated. SHOWTIME is having me on the main event on national television. I’m telling you I’m coming, and I’m coming to stay. They better get ready.

“I’m different to all the heavyweights out there. I’m not chasing a pay day. I’m chasing a legacy. I’m trying to change the layout. I’m trying to change the game. I’m trying to change my future and make history at the same time.”

BAKHTIYAR EYUBOV

“I have had hard training camps before, but this is up there. It’s one of the most intense camps I’ve ever had. I know that people expect me to deliver another knockout, but I’m training to go the distance. I’m scheduled to go 10 rounds and I am preparing myself as best as I can.

“My opponent is an experienced and tough fighter. Perhaps my toughest test to date. I’m confident in my skills. He can run, but he can’t hide. There are only four corners, I’ll find him and I’ll do what I came here to do: win.”

DMITRIY SALITA

“It is a great honor to be able to promote a show on SHOWTIME and both of these fighters. Miller and Eyubov are both willing to show that they are some of the best in their respective divisions.

“It is going to be a great event, happening at a special venue in Rochester at the soccer stadium, outside in the summer time. The show has all the ingredients to be a key event of the summer.”

Slugfest at The Sun Spectacular Star Boxing Undercard Bouts Accompany Delvin Rodriguez vs. Shawn Cameron Main Event at Mohegan Sun Arena on Saturday Night, July 23

Delvin Rodriguez
July 19, Uncasville, CT- Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing has put together its customary, competitive undercard to accompany the Mohegan Sun Arena main event featuring the return of former USBA Welterweight Champion and world title challenger Delvin Rodriguez (28-8-4 16KO Danbury, CT) against Iraqi war veteran Shawn Cameron (10-1 5 KOs) of the Brooklyn, NY in a 10-round Junior Middleweight contest on Saturday night, July 23.

The action packed evening begins at 7:30 pm with three exciting bouts featuring some of Connecticut’s best up-and-coming fighters to open the show.

Matchmaker Ron Katz has finalized Boston’s Michael McLaughlin (11-1-1, 5 KOs) to do battle with Shaka Moore (12-21-3, 2 KOs) of Norwalk, CT. in an eight-round affair for the vacant New England Welterweight title and home turf bragging rights as the Slugfest at The Sun co-feature.

New Jersey meets New York in a six-round battle of light heavyweights when Atlantic City’s Joel De La Paz (7-0, 4 KOs) puts his unblemished record on the line against Naim Terbunja (8-1) of Medford.

Super Lightweights clash in a six-round contest when Scott Burrell (11-2, 8 KO’s) of Brooklyn squares off against Hartford’s Chip Perez (12-3-2, 4 KOs).

In a four-round battle, Hartford’s Jose Rivera makes his professional debut against Saul Almeida of Boston in a Super Welterweight bout.

Tickets are priced at $150.00, $95.00 & $45.00 and $30.00 and are on sale now at the Mohegan Sun Box Office and through Ticketmaster. Ticketmaster customers may log on to ticketmaster.com or call Ticketmaster’s national toll free Charge By Phone number 1.800.745.3000.

Back to Rodriguez, who last fought in June 2015 when he challenged Erislandy Lara for the WBA World Jr. Middleweight title, dropping a 12-round decision to the champion, has refused to call it quits.

“At this point in my career I want to prove to myself and the world that I can still compete with the best,” said the Danbury native. “I stayed in training because it’s great exercise and part of my life. I want to try to get a couple of wins and get back into the ratings.

“I’m back with my original trainer, Lou Fusco, who gave me a great foundation to start me off, with an aggressive style and strong foundation.”

Rodriguez has fought a who’s who over the course of his long career including such elite boxers as Miguel Cotto, the aforementioned Lara, and Austin Trout, but may be best remembered for his scintillating battle with Pawel Wolak on July 15, 2011, which garnered “Fight of the Year” award.

Rodriguez has challenged for the world championship on three different occasions and feels he still has something left to prove taking on the hungry and tough, Shawn Cameron.

Cameron, who has just 11 fights under his belt, sees this as the opportunity he has been waiting for. Cameron served two tours of duty in Iraq and knows a win over a well-known contender like Delvin Rodriguez will do wonders for his career.

“Once again Delvin Rodriguez returns to familiar settings, The Mohegan Sun, where he has fought many times,” says DeGuardia. “Delvin knows at this point of his career he cannot afford any slip ups and is taking on a dangerous, younger opponent in Shawn Cameron who knows a win over a name like Delvin will land him bigger fights. I expect another exciting fight which is the norm for Delvin and I’m very happy to be back at The Sun.”

Undefeated Rising Star Errol Spence Jr. Battles Leonard Bundu in Main Event of Premier Boxing Champions on NBC Sunday, August 21 from Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk in Brooklyn

Errol Spence
BROOKLYN (July 19, 2016) – Undefeated rising star Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr. (20-0, 17 KOs) is set to take on once-beaten contender Leonard “The Lion” Bundu (33-1-2, 12 KOs) in a 12-round welterweight world title eliminator that headlines Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on NBC Sunday, August 21 from Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk in Brooklyn.

The action on NBC begins at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT following coverage of the Olympic Men’s Basketball Gold Medal Game. The 2012 U.S. Olympian Spence Jr. will look to move one step closer to becoming the second member of the 2012 U.S. Olympic boxing team to win a world title after Rau’shee Warren won a bantamweight championship in June.

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by DiBella Entertainment and presented by BROOKLYN BOXING™, start at $35. Presale tickets are available now with public on-sale beginning tomorrow at 10 a.m. Tickets can be purchased online by visiting www.ticketmaster.com and fordamphitheaterconeyisland.com.

“This is another great opportunity for me to gain exposure on NBC,” said Spence Jr. “A lot of people will be watching because of the Olympics that may not have known my name before. As an Olympian, headlining a major event four years after my Olympic run is exciting. Bundu is an older fighter, but he’s tough and has a lot of experience. He fought well against Keith Thurman. Thurman outboxed him but couldn’t knock him out. I think I can make a big statement in the division if I can stop him, as I did with Chris Algieri.”

“I am going to use my experience to my advantage on August 21,” said Bundu. “When I fought Thurman I ended up being overcautious, but that will not be the case this time. I know it’s now or never for me and I won’t let this chance slip away. Spence will come forward but that will work to my advantage because I love fighting on the inside. I’m going to show Spence a few things that he hasn’t seen before.”

The brand new Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk builds on the rich history of the sweet science in the Brooklyn neighborhood. Several heavyweight title fights took place on Coney Island at the turn of the 20th century, including James J. Jeffries’ heavyweight world title knock out of Bob Fitzsimmons in the 11th round on June 9, 1899. Jeffries would then defend the title two more times on Coney Island with a points victory over Tom Sharkey and a knockout in the 23rd round against James J. Corbett. Lightweight great Joe Gans and former middleweight champion “Nonpareil” Jack Dempsey also boxed in Coney Island.

“It is exciting to have rising star Errol Spence headlining the inaugural boxing event held on August 21 at the new Ford Amphitheater at the historic Coney Island Boardwalk,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “Spence is one of the most gifted young fighters in all of boxing and is on track to be a world champion. He will face off against Leonard Bundu, in a final elimination bout, to become the mandatory for the IBF welterweight title, currently held by Kell Brook.”

An Olympian who boasted a highly decorated amateur career, the 26-year-old Spence Jr.is coming off a dominating performance in which he stopped former world champion Chris Algieri in the fifth-round in a PBC on NBC main event. Spence Jr. is widely regarded as a future star in the sport and was dominant in his previous NBC appearances when he stopped Phil Lo Greco in the third round in June. His impressive 2015 also included TKO victories over Chris van Heerden, Samuel Vargas and Alejandro Barrera, culminating with him being named ESPN’s Prospect of the Year. Now, he looks to secure himself a world title shot.

Originally from Sierra Leone but fighting out of Toscana, Italy, Bundu represented Italy at the 2000 Olympic games where he defeated eventual world champion Daniel Geale. A former European welterweight champion, he owns victories over Frankie Gavin, Lee Purdy and Ismael El Massoudi in addition to going the distance in defeat against Keith Thurman. Bundu comes into this bout with victories over Pablo Munguia and Jussi Koivula in his last two bouts.

‘Detroit Brawl’ Pro Boxing Series Continues to Grow

Promoter Dmitriy Salita proudly announces his latest installment of “Detroit Brawl,” Saturday night at the Masonic Temple, was a tremendous success, helping him donate over 3000 meals to Forgotten Harvest, one of the nation’s largest food rescue organizations.

In the night’s main event, WBO #5, IBF #5, and WBC #7 and current NABF heavyweight champion, Andy “The Destroyer from Mexicali” Ruiz (28-0, 19 KOs), stayed unbeaten and showed off some fast, powerful fists, as he stopped Miami’s Josh “Dempsey” Gormley at 1:42 of the third round.

In other action, super lightweight Girorgi Gelashvili (5-0, 3 KOs) survived an early knockdown to stop Eric Hall (8-10-1, 4 KOs) of Durand, Michigan, in four rounds; cruiserweight Demetrius Banks (8-0, 4 KOs) of Detroit dropped Eric George (4-12) of Niagara Falls in the first round, but ended up having to settle for a unanimous six-round decision victory; super bantamweight Zach Shamoun (4-0-1, 3 KOs) of Royal Oak, Michigan, took a four-round unanimous decision over Jose Elizondo (1-1) of San Antonio, Texas; welterweight Sedar Hudayberdiyev (3-0, 2 KOs) of Turkmenistan won an entertaining four-round unanimous decision over formerly undefeated Steven Andrade (3-1, 2 KOs) of Atlanta Georgia; Detroit bantamweight Jarico O’Quinn (2-0, 2 KOs) was impressive in stopping Sergio Aguliar (0-4) of Miami Beach in three rounds; and lastly, Dearborn welterweight Gheith “Southpaw Prince” Karim made his pro debut a successful one by stopping Dean Walsh, Jr., in the first round.

Salita, who donated a portion of every ticket sold to Forgotten Harvest, says the event’s success went a lot further than the boxing ring that night.

“When we started these events, the goal was not only to bring a regular professional boxing program back to Detroit, but also to give back to this wonderful city and I’m happy to say we’re doing it,” said Salita. “I couldn’t be more proud. Thank you to the fans who came out that night and to my wonderful sponsor, Thomas Magee’s. Thank you to my entire team and to all the fighters for their brave efforts. Thank you to the team at the Masonic and to all the big-name Detroit fighters who showed up in support of the event. We will be doing it again soon.”

Based in Oak Park, Michigan, Forgotten Harvest was formed in 1990 to relieve hunger and prevent food waste throughout the metro Detroit area. Forgotten Harvest “rescued” over 40 million pounds of food last year by collecting surplus prepared and perishable food from over 800 locations, including grocery stores, fruit and vegetable markets, restaurants, caterers, dairies, farmers, wholesale food distributors and other Health Department-approved sources.

This donated food, which would otherwise go to waste, is delivered free of-charge to 280 emergency food providers in the metro Detroit area. Forgotten Harvest has been ranked as a four-star charity by Charity Navigator for nine consecutive years.

Anthony “Juice” Young looking to shine in headlining bout this Friday at The Claridge in Atlantic City

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (July 19, 2016)–This Friday night at the Claridge in Atlantic City, welterweight, Anthony “Juice” Young will be in the headlining bout for the first time, and he gets to do it in front of his hometown fans as he takes on Eduardo Flores in six-round bout in a card promoted by Rising Promotions.

The 28 year-old former college football player will look for his 2nd straight win and in the process look to put on a dominant performance against a man who has more than three-times the amount of fights then the Atlantic City native.

“Camp has gone well. I have been sparring with a fighters such as Anthony Burgin, Tevin Farmer, Thomas LaManna and Arturo Padilla,” said Young.

In Flores, he is facing a guy who has faced a litany of prospects and contenders and is by far the most experienced foe that Young has faced.

“I know he is a veteran and has been stopped five times in 47 fights. I know he is coming to fight and I hope to execute the game plan and then I can be the 6th guy to stop him.”

This will be Young’s 7th fight on the boardwalk and fourth in a row, yet unlike some fighters who do not like fighting at home due to outside demands for tickets, Young embraces the opportunity to perform in front of familiar faces.

“It is always a big deal to fight in front of the home crowd. I feed off of them and it urges me on to put on a great performance. Even though this is my first headliner, I always feel like I am the headliner no matter where I fight, but especially here.”

Young knows that a few good wins can put him in position to get in line for a great opportunity, but he is not looking past Flores.

“I plan on getting the win on Friday. I am taking this one fight at a time. I am looking to get back in the ring in September and hopefully fight for a regional title next year. I just want everyone to come out on Friday and put on a spectacular performance.”

ABOUT JULY 22ND

On Friday night, July 22nd, welterweight, Anthony “Juice” Young will headline a great night of boxing against Eduardo Flores in a scheduled 6-round welterweight bout at The Claridge Hotel in Atlantic City.

Connecticut’s top all-time great fighters & Foxwoods’ best fights

MASHANTUCKET, CT (July 19, 2016) — Connecticut may not have equal status with New York City or Las Vegas in terms of being a fight capital, but the Nutmeg State has produced five Hall-of-Famers with Foxwoods Resort Casino, located in Mashantucket, CT, hosting many of the sport’s greatest fighters and fights over the past two decades.

The tradition continues on Thursday, July 21, as rising middleweight contender Sergiy “The Technician” Derevyanchenko (8-0, 6 KOs) faces former world champion Sam “King” Soliman (44-13, 18 KOs) in the 10-round main event of Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN & ESPN Deportes.

Televised coverage begins at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT, and features a 10-round middleweight clash between powerful Ievgen Khytrov (13-0, 11 KOs) and California’s Paul Mendez (19-2-2, 9 KOs).

Connecticut’s all-time greatest boxer is the late Willie “Will ‘o the Wisp” Pep (229-11-1, 65 KOs), who was born in Middletown and lived in Rocky Hill. Pep, who fought professionally between 1940 and 1966, was a two-time world featherweight champion who had an epic rivalry with Sandy Saddler.

Other Hall-of-Famers from Connecticut are world heavyweight champion (1926-28) Gene “The Fighting Marine” Tunney (65-1-1, 48 KOs), of Greenwich, who defeated the legendary Jack Dempsey twice; Ukrainian-born world featherweight (1925) titlist Louis “Kid” Kaplan (108-22-12, 72 KOs), from Meriden; world light heavyweight champion (1933) “Slapsie” Maxie Rosenbloom (222-42-31, 2 NC, 19 KOs), of Leonard Bridge; world light heavyweight titleholder (1926-27) Jack “Bright Eyes” Delaney (73-11-2, 43 KOs), who was born in Canada but lived in Bridgeport.

Over the year, many other Connecticut fighters have made an impact on the sport including Hartford’s NBA featherweight champion Battling Battalino (57-26-3, 26 KOs), who was the first world champion to lose his title on the scale, Hartford’s two-time world welterweight titlist Marlon “Magic Man” Starling (45-6-12, 27 KOs), Norwalk’s WBA junior middleweight champion “Tremendous” Travis Simms (28-1, 21 KOs), New Haven’s three-time world light heavyweight champion “Bad” Chad Dawson (33-4, 18 KOs) and world welterweight contender Gaspar “El Indio” Ortega (131-29-6, 69 KOs), Stamford’s world No. 1-ranked welterweight Chico Vejar (92-20-4, 43 KOs), and Bloomfield’s 1996 Olympic Team USA captain Lawrence Clay-Bey (21-3-1, 16 KOs).

The No. 1 Foxwoods fight of all-time, held on April 16, 2011, was also promoted by DiBella Entertainment, and was selected as the 2011 Ring Magazine and BWAA Fight of the Year. Defending champion Andre Berto (27-0) and challenger Victor Ortiz (28-2-2) battled for 12 rounds, each getting dropped twice, with Ortiz winning a hard-fought decision (114-111, 114-112, 115-110) for the WBC welterweight title.

A close second place is the 2003 BWAA Fight of the Year, in which future Hall-of-Famer James Toney (65-4-2) won a 12-round decision over reigning IBF cruiserweight champion Vassiliy Jirov. The action started days earlier at the pre-fight press conference when a skirmish erupted as tables were overturned and glasses thrown. The animosity continued between the two fighters and their respective camps right up to the final bell. Previously undefeated, Jirov (31-0) started fast but faded, getting decked in the final round.

In 2004, New England favorite Scott “The Sandman” Pemberton, hailing from nearby New Bedford, MA, was involved in a great 12th round, come-from-behind knockout of always-tough Omar Sheika in a rematch of a previous draw, for a regional super middleweight title.

Two other N.E. fan favorites who fought regularly at Foxwoods were multiple-time world champion Vinny Paz (Pazienza during his boxing career), fighting out of Cranston, RI, and New Bedford’s all-action “Sucra” Ray Oliveira. Paz had a 13-3 record at Foxwoods, highlighted by his 1998 decision over Glenwood Brown and his 50th career win in his retirement fight against Tocker Pudwill in 2004. Oliveira was only 6-7-1 fighting at Foxwoods, but he faced nothing but iron and he did defeat a world champion, Vince Phillips, in their 2000 non-title fight that produced the second-most total punches (2,989) recorded at that time.

Brazilian boxing fans always turned out in force when countryman Acelino “Popo” Freitas fought at Foxwoods, primarily because of the large Brazilian community in Connecticut. Freitas fought there four times, all in lightweight world title fights, defeating Zahir Raheem and Artur Grigorian and losing to Juan Diaz and Diego Corrales.

Other great fights at Foxwoods include future world middleweight champion Andy Lee coming back from the brink of possibly getting knocked out to stop Craig McEwan in the 10th round of their 2011 fight, Carl Froch’s dramatic late surge in 2009 to knock out Jermain Taylor (who was well ahead on the scorecards) in the 12th round for the WBC super middleweight championship, Pernell Whitaker taking a close decision from Andrey Pestryaev (115-113, 115-112, and 114-113) in their 1997 WBA eliminator (later ruled a No Decision due to Whitaker’s failed drug test), and Ike Quartey overcoming two knockdowns to successfully defend his WBA welterweight title versus Jose Luis Lopez in 1997 (Quartey was originally awarded a win by majority decision, but a scoring error was discovered and the fight was ruled a majority draw).

Two of the greatest boxers in modern boxing history, Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Roy Jones, Jr., both fought at Foxwoods in 1998. In his 15th pro fight, Mayweather registered a third-round technical knockout of Miguel Melo, while Jones successfully defended his WBC/WBA light heavyweight titles with a 10th-round TKO of Otis Grant. In the Jones-Grant co-feature, IBF lightweight champion Shane Mosley successfully defended his title against Jesse James Leija, who was unable to answer the bell for the 10th round.

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by DiBella Entertainment, are priced at $150, $75 and $45, not including applicable service charges and taxes, and are on sale now. COYLE: I’LL MAKE HISTORY IN LEEDS

Tommy Coyle says he will make history in by becoming the first British champion from Hull when he challenges Tyrone Nurse for the Super-Lightweight title at the First Direct Arena in Leeds on July 30, live on Sky Sports.

Coyle clash with old amateur foe Nurse is his second fight at 140lbs having made the move from Lightweight in May over six rounds in Manchester.

The 26 year old had some memorable moments at 135lbs with his epic fight of the year clash with Daniel Brizuela, brutal second round KO win over Michael Katsidis and stadium showdown with Hull rival Luke Campbell MBE, but Coyle is happy that his first shot at the Lord Lonsdale belt is at a weight that he feels suits him best.

“I feel brilliant at Super-Lightweight,” said Coyle. “I’ve been 9st 9lbs since I was 16 years old. When Tyrone and I boxed as amateurs I was 9st 9lbs then and that was ten years ago. That extra five pounds on fight night is going to be a huge difference, I don’t have to take it off in the last week so I think I will be a completely different animal at the weight and you’ll see the difference in the fight.

“It’s the prettiest belt out there and it’s every young fighters dream to fight for the British belt. It holds a lot of credibility and I’m really excited to be fighting for it, so I’ll be leaving everything in the ring on July 30.

“This is for my little boy – I want him to be able to say that his Dad was British champion. I’ve been in some great fights, exciting fights and memorable fights, but I want that silverware to show for it and Hull has never had a British champion so it would be nice to be a part of history and become the first. There’s lots to play for and I am in a good place.”

Nurse’s clash with Coyle is part of a huge night of action in Leeds as Josh Warrington defends his WBC International Featherweight title against Patrick Hyland.

Luke Campbell MBE faces his toughest test in the paid ranks to date in the shape of former World champion Argenis Mendez, bitter Heavyweight rivals Dillian Whyte and Dave Allen meet for the vacant WBC International title, Barnsley’s Josh Wale gets a shot at the Commonwealth Super-Bantamweight title against Birmingham’s unbeaten starlet Gamal Yafai and classy Belfast man Ryan Burnett defends his WBC International Bantamweight title.

Tickets are on sale now priced at £30, £40, £60 and £100 available from the First Direct Arena at www.firstdirectarena.com and on 0844 248 1585. VIP tickets priced at £150 are available exclusively from Matchroom Boxing at www.matchroomboxing.com.

Tickets for July 30 are also available from http://www.stubhub.co.uk/matchroom-boxing-tickets/ – StubHub is the official ticket partner and marketplace of Matchroom Boxing.

LIGHTWEIGHT CONTENDER BAHODIR MAMADJANOV NOW FIGHTING OUT OF THE SALITA STABLE

Brooklyn, NY (July 19. 2016)–Bahodir Mamadjanov hails from Uzbekistan, and a quick glance at his resume tells you he is a willing and capable warrior. The 29 year old lefty, who campaigns in the super lightweight class, has been in with opposition of known quality since turning professional in 2011, and that trend figures to continue now that he has signed on with young gun promoter Dmitriy Salita.

Mamadjanov (19-2 with 11 KOs) opened eyeballs galore when he upset 14-0 Angelo Santana, a highly touted prospect, in 2014. He didn’t get the nod in 2015, when he clashed with Richard Commey, who will shortly vie for the IBF 135 pound title.

The fighter, living and training in Texas, is enjoying a two fight win streak, as he added the scalps of “Chop Chop” Corley and Gilbert Venegas, and Salita expects much more of that from the hitter who doesn’t fear testing himself against the top tier elite.

“Mamadjanov has shown that he is world class,” Salita said, “and he is now more focused than ever. He wants to fight and beat the best lightweights in the world. We will keep him busy with a plan to land a meaningful fight in the near future.

Future foes will need to be ready to eat a persistent jab from Mamadjanov, who will look to land a crisp straight left to make max impact. He also smashes with both hands to the body, and enjoys coming forward, taking it to his adversary.

Expect Mamadjanov to work his way steadily up the ratings ladder, and in short order, get a crack at a crown.

Terence Crawford/Brian McIntyre Blog Part 4: Tuesday, July 19

Terence Crawford
Discuss the pressure on being seen as one of the NEW faces in boxing.

CRAWFORD

“There is no pressure on me being looked at as boxing’s next superstar, but there is a lot of hard work in becoming one. I’m really excited to be on the big stage and I’m on that big stage because I paid my dues in the gym and in the ring. That’s the reason I have accomplished so much as a fighter — pride of performance — and that’s why I am going to win on July 23. If I’m going to solidify my position as the new face of boxing it starts by unifying the 140 pound division. I’ve been fighting people taller than me and larger than me all my life. I’ve been short for 28 years and I haven’t been stopped yet. Postol is nothing to me. He’s just another guy that I’m fighting. I’m not training for Postol, I’m training for myself — to be the best I can possibly be. I do that, then no one can beat me. I’m confident in my abilities and I am confident that I am going to destroy Postol.”

McINTYRE

“There is no pressure because it’s his destiny. All we have to do is keep on winning. The media and the public will see Terence as the best fighter in the world. I don’t care who Postol has in his corner, there is no way we’re letting Postol come to our country and take home Terence’s title. We are a way better team than they are. We have a deep history with each other and we have the heritage that produces legends as well as champions. Postol cannot beat Terence. And Freddie Roach is going to have a front row seat to watch his fighter get drilled.”

Crawford vs. Postol takes place Saturday, July 23 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT.

Viktor Postol/Freddie Roach Blog Part 4: Tuesday, July 19

Describe your relationship with Freddie Roach. How much has Freddie Roach helped you?

VIKTOR POSTOL
When I first met Freddie Roach in his gym in Hollywood I saw a man who was fully committed to his job. I saw that this was the job of his entire life. He lived in and lived for boxing. No matter how many people are in the gym training, Freddie always finds time for everyone to give advice and correct something for somebody. The same was in my case as he always put his heart and soul into my training as a boxer and anyone can see the result of our working together. Freddie has always believed in me and given me his full and undivided attention, even in our first training camp in the Philippines where Manny was training for his fight against Chris Algieri. He allowed me to spar with Manny and when it was my time to train after Manny had left the gym, he gave me 110% of his attention. It has always been that way. He gives me confidence and teaches me many things. He is a wonderful teacher and I am lucky to be his student. He has had me work a lot on the small things because details are important. That has turned me into a stronger professional fighter. We are a great team.

FREDDIE ROACH

I called Viktor my favorite Russian fighter after he knocked out Matthysse to win the world title and he corrected me and told me he’s from the Ukraine. I have the utmost respect for him as a person and as a fighter. He works hard every day. He’s always on time. He listens and then he practices what we work on for for hours. He has developed into a great student of the sport both mentally and physically. When someone like Viktor comes in daily and gives you everything in the gym you cannot help but root for him. We have total trust in each other. I was so happy for him when he knocked out Matthysse to win the world title. Viktor deserved it. I have been in the game a long time but the night Viktor became world champion was one of the greatest victories of my training career. But I think Viktor’s performance on July 23 will surpass that. We have a solid game plan for Crawford. We are going right at him from the opening bell. This is a real 50-50 fight. The best man will win and the loser will go back to Nebraska.”

Crawford vs. Postol takes place Saturday, July 23 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT.

Jose Roman & Carlos Carlson Featured on “Path to Glory” Friday, July 29

ORANGE, Calif. (July 18, 2016) – Lightweight standout Jose Roman and world ranked bantamweight Carlos Carlson (WBC No. 10) return to defend their respective winning streaks on Friday, July 29, from the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, Calif.

The “Path to Glory” 8-round main event features the once-beaten Roman (22-1-1, 15 KOs) going for his ninth straight victory against Venezuela’s Carlos Cardenas (20-10-1, 13 KOs).

Roman, 28, fighting out of Garden Grove, Calif., enters the bout well prepared. He was a late scratch from last month’s Thompson Boxing card, which allowed him to stay active for his upcoming fight against Cardenas.

“I kept training to maintain my weight,” said Roman, who has been sparring with stable mate Cesar Villarraga. “I feel strong and ready to fight Cardenas. The plan is to start fast and set the tone in the first three rounds. My mentality is always to finish the fight early.”

Cardenas matches the description of Roman’s recent competition – well seasoned and tested against world-class competition. In this case, Cardenas holds a recent distance loss to former world champion Juan Diaz.

“He’s a veteran with a lot of experience under his belt,” Roman said. “We are not taking him lightly.”

Tickets for “Path to Glory” are priced at $40, $60, & $100 and are available for purchase online at ThompsonBoxing.com, or by calling 714-935-0900.

In the 8-round co-feature, Carlson (20-1, 11 KOs) faces Gerardo Marin (13-3, 8 KOs) in what is expected to be a back and forth affair between the quick striking bantamweights.

For Carlson, at this stage of his career, every fight is magnified.

“I’m somewhat of a target now that I’ve been moving up in the world rankings,” said the 26-year-old who hails from Tijuana, Mex. “There’s a lot of work to do before I earn a world title shot and it starts with Marin. My focus has been on winning this fight.”

In the “Path to Glory” special attraction, lightweight John Delperdang (6-1, 6 KOs) will have home court advantage when he goes against Colombia’s Andres Figueroa (7-1, 5 KOs) in a bout scheduled for 6-rounds.

Delperdang, who was born and raised in Ontario, plans to rebound from a majority decision loss to Rickey Edwards in May.

“I’ll have the crowd behind me,” said the 24-year-old. “I always put on a good show and next Friday won’t be any different.”

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the first bell rings at 7:45 p.m. The Doubletree Hotel is located at 222 N. Vineyard Ave. in Ontario, Calif. and can be reached at 909-937-0900.

Located in Arlington, Texas, AT&T Stadium is home to one of the most iconic and successful sports teams in history – the Dallas Cowboys, and will host the big event between Canelo and Smith on Mexican Independence Day weekend, Sept. 17.

Canelo vs. Smith will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View® beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT on Sept. 17. The heavy-handed combatants will head next to London, England for a press conference at The Landmark Hotel on July 20, 2016.

Oscar De La Hoya, chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, led those present at today’s press conference in a moment of silence to honor the victims of the recent tragedy affecting the Dallas Police Department and Dallas Area Rapid Transit officers.

Below is what the fighters, their teams, promoters and Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones had to say at today’s press conference:

CANELO ALVAREZ, Former Two-Division World Champion:

“I had to work for my birthday, so I’m here to work. I’m very happy to be back in Texas again, in this beautiful stadium. I’m going to take this fight seriously and prepare like always. LIAM “BEEFY” SMITH, WBO Junior Middleweight World Champion:

“I am very excited, I have asked for a top name for a very long time and when Canelo’s name came to the table it was an automatic ‘yes.’

“We are coming very prepared for this fight, and I’m coming to win.”

OSCAR DE LA HOYA, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions:

“Everything is bigger in Texas, and here we are the iconic AT&T Stadium, where we have two world champion fighters known for knocking out opponents in the ring with their strength and power. Come Mexican Independence weekend, former two-division world champion Canelo Alvarez will face the undefeated WBO junior middleweight world champion Liam “Beefy” Smith for his title.

“Here you have Liam Smith, an aggressive, relentless fighter. His previous eight opponents have fallen before the final bell. And then you have Canelo Alvarez, who is only getting more and more powerful with each of his devastating victories.

“Both of these fighters come from boxing families. Boxing is in their blood. To Canelo and Smith, fighting is a family tradition and with that comes a responsibly to live up to the family name. That said, both of them will come to the ring on September 17 to wage a war: for Canelo, to claim a new title as the WBO junior middleweight world champion and for Smith, to successfully defend his WBO title once again and make a name for himself in the U.S.

“While the fights will be the highlight of the weekend–Golden Boy, Jerry Jones and the Cowboys will bring the people a week full of fun activities that fans will enjoy for the entirety of fight week.”

JERRY JONES, Dallas Cowboys Owner, President and General Manager:

“These two fighters are champions. I’ve got to see Canelo fight, and I can’t tell you how impressed I am by his talent, to see it up close and personal. We have some great Hispanic boxing fans here in Texas. We recognize what a great talent Liam Smith is and what a great fighter Canelo is, and what he means to Mexican fans. It is a great gift for us to host this event on Mexican Independence Day weekend.

“When we built this new home for the Dallas Cowboys, we wanted great champions, great matches and to be part of the legacy of our stadium beyond just football events. It’s a great privilege to us to have this fight at our Stadium. In our stadium on the giant screens, you’ll be able to see every detail of the fight in the ring on Sept. 17.”

EDDY REYNOSO, Head Trainer of Canelo Alvarez:

“We are fighting a tough fight with Liam Smith. There is a reason he is a champion. We are going to prepare like always with a lot of dedication, and we can win another title. I want to invite everyone in Dallas to come and support Canelo. We will see you in September.”

JOSE “CHEPO” REYNOSO, Manager and Trainer of Canelo Alvarez:

“We know that on Sept. 17, Liam Smith is coming to conquer America. He is coming to defend his title. We also know he has knocked out his recent opponents. We should be very aware so that we don’t have any surprises. We take this fight with a lot of respect and responsibility. This is an important fight in September, at an important stadium that is one of the best in the world. Viva Canelo and Viva Mexico!”

JOE GALLAGHER, Ring Magazine 2015 Trainer of the Year and Trainer of Liam Smith:

“Liam Smith is a world champion, and he is doing what world champions do: defending his world title against one of the best fighters in the world.

“We are going to have a good camp. Liam isn’t coming over here to be caught like a rabbit in the headlights. Liam Smith is a world champion and is going to take care of business on fight night.”

MATTHEW MACKLIN, Manager to Liam Smith:

“I’ve known Liam nearly 20 years. I boxed with one of his brothers in the amateurs. Liam Smith is a nice kid, but on fight night once that bell rings, he’s going to unleash. After September 17, the whole world will know who Liam Smith is.”

PETER NELSON, Executive Vice President of HBO Sports:

“Thank you Golden Boy for your partnership and efforts to make this a great event. HBO sees this as one of the signature events of 2016 with Canelo and Mexican Independence Day weekend.”

FRANCISCO VALCARCEL, WBO President:

“It’s a privilege to be here today. This is the best arena in the world, and I’ve been all around the world and seen many venues. I can assure you that this is going to be the best fight. I know Liam Smith because I’ve followed him the last three or four years. Canelo, this will be a tough fight. Be ready to go toe-to-toe.”

WILLIAM KUNTZ, Executive Director of the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation:

“Events like this help us showcase the great state of Texas. Oscar and Jerry, thanks for having us today.”

Undefeated Featherweight Miguel Flores Battles Exciting Contender Ryan Kielczweski in Main Event of Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN & ESPN Deportes Friday, August 12 From Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York – 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT

VERONA, NY (July 18, 2016) – Undefeated rising contender Miguel Flores (20-0, 9 KOs) takes on exciting once-beaten featherweight contender Ryan Kielczweski (25-1, 7 KOs) in the 10-round main event of Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN and ESPN Deportes Friday, August 12 from Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York.

Televised coverage begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and features a welterweight showdown between unbeaten contender Bryant Perrella (14-0, 13 KOs) and Cuban Olympian Yordenis Ugas (15-3, 7 KOs) in 10-rounds of action.

“Fighting on ESPN is incredible because you know that fans from all around the world will be tuning in,” said Flores. “My opponent is a very skilled fighter, so I’ll be at my best when we step in the ring on August 12. Expect me to go to war and bring a lot of action to those who will be watching.”

“It’s always exciting to be fighting on ESPN, especially in the main event,” said Kielczweski. “Training is going well and I’ve been traveling around to get great sparring. I don’t know much about Flores other than that he’s undefeated for a reason. If I perform on August 12 hopefully something big will come next that leads me towards a title. It’s going to be an exciting night and an electric fight.”

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by King’s Promotions, are priced at $60 for ringside, $35 and $25, and are on sale now (may be subject to additional fees). Tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster, by calling 877-833-SHOW or by visiting the Turning Stone Box Office.

An undefeated fighter from Michoacan, Mexico, but fighting out of Houston, Flores has not lost since turning pro in 2009 at just 17-years-old. The 23-year-old had a big 2015 beginning in May with a victory over German Meraz and followed up by wins against Juan Ruiz, Carlos Padilla and Alfred Tetteh. He started 2016 with a headlining win over Mario Briones at The Dancehall in January and dominated Ruben Tamayo over 10 rounds in May. Now he will face the toughest test of his career in his east coast debut.

A runner-up in the 2008 National Golden Glove tournament, the 26-year-old Kielczweski looks to work his fourth-straight victory on August 12. Born and raised in Quincy, MA., he bounced back from his first defeat to deliver a first round knockout over Anthony Napunyi in May 2015 and followed that up with a victory over veteran contender Rafael Vazquez in October of last year. Most recently, he dominated Mario Macias in an April bout.

Fresh off of a second round stoppage over previously unbeaten David Grayton in PBC on ESPN action in June, the 27-year-old Perrella looks to take down another quality opponent when he enters the ring on August 12. Fighting out of Fort Meyers, Florida, the welterweight, who has trained with world champion Keith Thurman, enters this fight on an 11-bout streak of stopping his opponents inside of the distance.

A sensational Cuban amateur, Ugas picked up a Bronze medal at the 2008 Olympics and also owns Gold medals from the 2005 World Amateur Championships and 2007 Pan American Games. Now fighting out of Miami, the 29-year-old owns victories over Cosme Rivera, Kenny Abril and Adan Hernandez.

The host of this exciting event of champions, Turning Stone Resort Casino is known as a venue for some of the best action-packed boxing events. In fact, boxing legend Mike Tyson selected Turning Stone Resort as the venue for his world debut as a promoter, Mohammad Ali’s daughter Laila Ali made her boxing debut at Turning Stone, Floyd Mayweather Jr. promoted his televised fight card at the Upstate New York resort, and just last year, Turning Stone landed the epic battle between Ruslan Provodnikov and Lucas Matthysse, a “fight of the year” contender, over arenas in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Miami. The August 12th fight will mark Turning Stone’s 19th nationally-televised boxing event, cementing the resort as a destination for legendary knockout fights. Located in Upstate New York, Turning Stone is an award-winning destination resort, offering world-class amenities including four hotels, 21 restaurants and dining options, two luxurious spas, 120,000 square foot Las Vegas style gaming floor, five beautiful golf courses, and several bars, cocktail lounges and nightlife venues.

Undefeated Rising Star David Benavidez Takes On Hard-Hitting Denis Douglin in Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN & ESPN Deportes Main Event Friday, August 5 Live from Philadelphia

Denis_Douglin
PHILADELPHIA (July 18, 2016) – Undefeated rising contender David “El Bandera Roja” Benavidez (15-0, 14 KOs) is set to face super middleweight contender Denis Douglin (20-4, 13 KOs) in the 10-round main event of Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN and ESPN Deportes Friday, August 5 live from the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia.

Televised coverage begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT with exciting lightweight contender Alejandro “El Charro” Luna (20-0, 15 KOs) taking on Ireland’s Stephen “The Rock” Ormond (21-2, 11 KOs) in a 10-round attraction.

“We never stopped training after my last fight,” said Benavidez. “We went right back into camp and I’m already in fighting shape. Douglin is a tough southpaw. We’ll start looking at tape and see what kind of holes he has. I’ll start with the jab and break him down. We’re working hard towards bigger and bigger fights. This is going to be a great night of action.”

“I plan on applying pressure and making Benavidez adjust to my style,” said Douglin. “He’s a tall, strong fighter, but he doesn’t use his height. He’s one-dimensional, but he’s very good at what he does. He doesn’t have the experience to deal with my style. I am stepping in with an undefeated fighter but he will leave the ring with a loss.”

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by King’s Promotions, are priced at $50, $75 and $100, not including fees, and are on sale now. To purchase tickets click HERE.

The younger brother of undefeated Jose Benavidez, David has racked up a perfect 15 wins in 15 starts at just 19-years-old. Fighting out of Phoenix, Benavidez picked up four victories via stoppage in 2015 and kicked off his 2016 with a knockout of Kevin Cobbs in January. He scored a second round knockout of Phillip Jackson Benson in April and followed that up by stopping previously unbeaten Francy Ntetu in the seventh round in June.

Representing Marlboro, New Jersey, Douglin was a 2008 National Golden Gloves champion at middleweight who won his first 12 fights after turning pro in 2009. The 28-year-old has battled top fighters Jermell Charlo and George Groves, in addition to owning victories over previously unbeaten Steve Martinez and veteran Charles Whitaker. He looks for his third straight victory after stopping Marcus Upshaw in the eighth round of his last bout.

At just 24-years old, Luna has already put together an impressive 20 professional wins since turning pro in 2010. Fighting out of Bellflower, California, he defeated former world champion Cristobal Cruz over eight rounds in June and knocked out Sergio Lopez in August to close his 2015. He began his 2016 campaign by stopping veteran Alan Herrera in the eighth round of their January showdown.

Fighting out of Dublin, Ormond is undefeated in his seven starts in the U.S. including his last three outings, which all came in Massachusetts. The former European lightweight champion owns victories over Derry Mathews, previously unbeaten Adam Dingsdale and most recently tough contender Marcos Jimenez.
