LOWE DEFENDS COMMONWEALTH STRAP AGAINST MUNYAI IN MANCHESTER

Isaac Lowe will defend his Commonwealth Featherweight title against Tshifhiwa Munyai at the Manchester Arena on September 24, live on Sky Sports.

Lowe makes the first defence of the crown he won in the same venue in February when he stopped Marco McCullough in eight rounds on the undercard of the World title battle between Scott Quigg and Carl Frampton – with his clash with Munyai on the undercard of another huge unification blockbuster between Lightweight World kings Anthony Crolla and Jorge Linares.

The unbeaten Morecambe man faces a huge step-up in class against the South African, who returns to the venue of his World title challenge against Quigg in April 2014. ‘The Atomic Spider’ won the Commonwealth Bantamweight title in England in 2006 against Martin Power, defending it against Lee Haskins and in a rematch with Power.

Munyai last three outings have been stoppage wins in Lancashire, and the 31 year old has a huge experience advantage over Lowe, ten years senior to the champion and 19 more pro bouts under his belt.

Lowe’s clash with Munyai is part of a huge night of action in Manchester as Crolla and Linares lock horns in a mouth-watering unification battle for the WBA and WBC Diamond World and Ring Magazine Lightweight Championships.

Tickets are on sale now priced at £40, £60, £80, £100 and £150 and available from the Manchester Arena at www.manchester-arena.com or by calling 0844 847 8000. VIPs tickets are exclusively available through www.matchroomboxing.com priced at £250.

Sponsored by Thomas Magee’s Sporting House Whiskey Bar, tickets for “Detroit Brawl” will be priced at VIP $123, Box Seats $100, Ringside $93, Reserved $63 and $38, and Balcony $28, and are available at all Ticketmaster outlets and Tickmaster.com.

26-year-old Ruiz, from Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico, will face the determined and upset-minded 41-year-old Gormley, from Torrance in a non-title fight in the 10-round main event of Salita Promotions’ next “Detroit Brawl” installment at the Masonic Temple in Downtown Detroit.

Ruiz has made four successful defenses of his NABF Championship. Before that, he held the WBO Inter-Continental Heavyweight Championship and made an additional three successful defenses before relinquishing. In his last in-ring appearance, he stopped former world title challenger Ray Austin in the fourth round on May 14 in Studio City, California.

Gormley, who bills himself as a distant relative of former champ Jack Dempsey, reportedly trains with Dino Spencer and Luis “Chiro” Perez at the 5th St. Gym in Miami, Florida. He is on a three-fight KO streak since coming back from a 16-year layoff in late 2015. Despite having had no amateur boxing career, Dempsey fought his way to up-and-comer status in the late 90s and was a fan favorite. He also worked with former champion Lennox Lewis as a sparring partner. Gormley is a former California State Wrestling Champion and MMA fighter and the older brother of UFC fighter Chase Gormley.

Giving the “Detroit Brawl” crowd its usual international flavor will be welterweights Giorgi Gelashvili (4-0, 2 KOs) Brooklyn via Georgia and Serdar Hadurbadyev (2-0, 2 KOs) of Turkmenabat, Turkmenistan in separate six-round bouts.

Also, making his long-awaited four-round pro debut that night will be “Southpaw Prince” Gheith Karim, a three-time national amateur champion from Dearborn, Michigan. A product of the Kronk Gym, Karim was being touted as a future star by legendary Kronk founder Emanuel Steward since the age of 11. He will compete as a junior middleweight.

Also scheduled for action that night are crowd-favorite Detroit prospects including cruiserweight Demetrius Banks (7-0, 4 KOs) in a six-rounder; middleweight Dorell Van Horn Jr (9-0, 6 KOs) in a six-rounder; as well as promising Detroit bantamweight Jarico O’Quinn (1-0, 1 KO); super bantamweight Zach Shamoun (3-0-1, 3 KOs) of Bloomfield Hills Michigan; and cruiserweight Clarence Dubose (3-0, 3 KOs) of Eastpointe, Michigan, in separate four-rounders.

More fireworks expected in Falowo-Chatman rematch

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (July 5th, 2016) — Moments after Chris Chatman beat Thomas Falowo at Twin River Casino in 2013, Chatman promised the then 24-year-old Falowo he’d give him a second chance at beating him in his own backyard.

“‘Anytime you want it, Thomas, you can get it,'” Chatman said. “‘If you want a rematch, I’m here.'”

True to his word, the outspoken Chatman (13-5-1, 5 KOs) returns for an encore performance Friday, July 15th, 2016 in a highly anticipated rematch against the Pawtucket, R.I., native Falowo (14-3, 8 KOs), eight rounds at Twin River for Falowo’s New England Middleweight Title on the undercard of the Angel Camacho Jr.-Kevin Cobbs light heavyweight championship bout, presented by CES Boxing.

Nearly three years to the date of his hard-fought win over Falowo, the Jersey City, N.J., vet fights in Rhode Island for the seventh time and is confident as ever coming off a win against another hometown favorite, Vladine Biosse, in July of 2015.

“I’m a very competitive guy,” Chatman said. “I don’t even like people walking past me on the sidewalk. I speed up. I’m very competitive. I’m going to come in here the same way I did last time. I beat Thomas before, and I’m going to beat him again.”

Both sides remember the first fight well. Falowo scored a controversial knockdown early in the fourth round. Chatman thought he slipped, but referee Eddie Claudio began counting as he hit the canvas.

“He tied it up with that knockdown,” Chatman said, “even though he stepped on my foot.”

Seconds later, Chatman answered with an overhand right to the temple that sent Falowo to the canvas and left him noticeably off balance as he climbed to his feet. The shift in momentum carried Chatman through the middle rounds before a late surge by Falowo closed the gap. Chatman won unanimously, 77-75 on all three scorecards.

“That was a turning point,” Chatman said. “The momentum was back in my corner and I knew I could hurt him. That’s a big thing when you realize you can hurt another fighter.”

Falowo rebounded in 2014 with back-to-back wins at Twin River before making his network television debut on Showtime against Romanian super middleweight Ronald Gavril in August.

A year later, he developed another rival in previously unbeaten Maine native Russell Lamour, whom he defeated twice, including a second victory in November at the Expo Center in Portland for the then vacant N.E. title.

Next Friday will be his first fight at Twin River since June of 2014 when he knocked out Jose Rivera in the opening round of a scheduled six-round middleweight bout.

“The only advantage I have is that I feel like I’ve progressed and I’m a much better fighter than I was the last time I fought him,” Falowo said. “Before, I was kid, but I’m a much different man now, so it’s going to be a whole different story.

“I’m a little more composed and I have my legs under me better than I did before. I’m just mentally stronger. I’ve been in tough fights. Even then, I was in tough fights, but I’m mentally stronger and more aware of where I’m at. Overall, I just feel I’m a better fighter than I was then.”

After beating Falowo, Chatman nearly pitched a shutout against former The Contender star Grady Brewer before moving up to super middleweight to challenge Camacho and Biosse at Twin River. He lost to Camacho, a fight he agreed to take on two week’s notice when he was out of work and behind on rent, before outworking Biosse last July in a unanimous decision win.

The fight against Brewer was his first with his current trainer Tony Baldwin, but not much else has changed for Chatman. He still carries the same unwavering intensity and trademark glare he introduced in 2009 when he fought Demetrius Andrade, as evident by the animosity he held toward Biosse before the fight last year.

Notwithstanding his occasional animated speeches at pre-fight weigh-ins, Chatman has actually toned it down in recent years, a sign of maturity under his new coach.

“A lot of times I’d get there and say, ‘Fuck this shit, I’m gonna win,’ and now with my new coach, it’s taken me like a year or two to settle into his style, but I’m pretty sure the last you fight you saw with me and Vladine I was way more precise,” Chatman said. “I was fast when I needed to and more calculated.

“I had animosity toward Vla, but I didn’t let that show in the fight. I was very poised and stayed calm the whole time. I didn’t let that lead me to a point where I was out of control, but I brought the right intensity you need to bring, the intensity to win, not like, ‘I don’t like this dude,’ but the intensity to win.

“I’m more confident now because I consider myself a more patient fighter. I’m a little less reckless. It’s more about doing what I need to do to win and not just about anteing up punches and tying people down. That’s something I’m bringing to this fight.”

Falowo insists he, too, is a smarter, more poised fighter now than he was three years ago, plus he’ll have the benefit of the hometown crowd at Twin River, an advantage he hasn’t experienced in more than two years.

What happens when the bell rings is anyone’s guess, but if the Falowo-Chatman rematch is anything like the first fight, it has the potential to once again steal the show next Friday.

“I’ve been getting a lot of support and a lot of love from people who have been waiting to see me fight around here for a while,” Falowo said. “Everyone always gets to see me on social media and stay updated, but there’s nothing like a night out at the fights. I’m looking forward to coming home and having my crowd support me instead of going into hostile territory against other guys.

“It’s just a different feel. It’s a good feeling to be back home and have that hometown support. Once I’m in the ring, I do what I have to do to win, but I always have that extra oomph, that extra drive with the crowd cheering me on. It always drives me a little more.”

Tickets for the event are priced at $42.00, $67.00, $102.00 and $152.00 (VIP) and can be purchased online at www.cesboxing.com, www.twinriver.com or www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 401-724-2253/2254 or at the Twin River Casino Players Club. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Camacho (15-0, 5 KOs), the undefeated Providence native, puts his Universal Boxing Federation (UBF) International and New England Light Heavyweight Titles on the line in the 10-round main event against the Willimantic, Conn., vet Cobbs (10-2, 4 KOs). The third title fight of the night takes place in the super lightweight division as Nick DeLomba (9-1, 2 KOs) makes the first defense of his New England Title in a six-round bout against Oscar Bonilla (3-1-2) of Bridgeport, Conn.

July 15th also features the return of newly-crowned World Boxing Council (WBC) Female Middleweight World Champion Kali Reis (9-5-1), who captured the belt in April in New Zealand, in an eight-round bout against Atlantic City vet Althea Saunders (3-2-2), plus middleweight Kendrick Ball Jr. (1-0, 1 KO) and lightweight Jamaine Ortiz (1-0, 1 KO), both from Worcester, Mass., and the professional debut of New London, Conn., welterweight Cristobal Marrero.

Also on the undercard, Ray Oliviera Jr. (4-0, 1 KO) of New Bedford, Mass., battles Worcester’s Andy Gonzalez (3-0, 3 KOs) in a four-round junior middleweight attraction featuring two undefeated New England fighters.

Protect Yourself at All Times: A Guide for Professional Boxers

Dallas, Texas………. Forbes 30 Under 30 (Sports) entrepreneur, author, and professional athlete representative Adrian Clark has announced the second book of his guide series, titled, Protect Yourself at All Times: A Guide for Professional Boxers.

In unprecedented fashion, Clark delivers this blueprint for professional boxers with 12 rounds (chapters) of concise recommendations to help boxers empower themselves and protect their careers. Also included are testimonials from more than 40 current and retired fighters about their experiences in the business.

“The book is just the beginning of what will become a movement to protect professional boxers outside the ring,” said Clark, who began representing fighters at 23 years old. “It is well overdue for someone to lead the charge and educate the fighters on the business side of things. Every fighter, and everyone closely connected to a fighter, should read this book.”

As a fighter advocate as well as a manager, Clark recently released the “Boxer-Manager Agreement,” a standard, legal document for boxers to contract the services of their manager or adviser. The ‘Boxer Manager Agreement’ can be downloaded on the AC Sports Management, LLC, website, www.ACsportsm.com.

To introduce the book, International Boxing Hall of Fame inductee and four division world champion Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker and two-division world champion James “Buddy” McGirt will pair up for a third time. In this setting, the gloves are off and both fighters don their “writer” hat to tag-team the foreword for Clark’s book.

BRADLEY SKEETE: “MY STYLE MAKES ME A HARD FIGHT FOR ANY WELTERWEIGHT IN THE WORLD.”

Penge punch picker Bradley Skeete intends adding a final bit of garnish to what has been a breakout 2015-16 campaign when he stars on the mammoth Cardiff Ice Arena bill on July 16th.

After a brace of impressive WBO European title defences over Mark Thompson and Stevie Williams at the tail end of last year, the 6ft 1in stylist from Al Smith’s iBox gym in Bromley delivered a virtuoso display to relieve home hero Sam Eggington of his British and Commonwealth welterweight belts on a rival Matchroom show in Birmingham last March.

And now the 28 year old south Londoner is primly placed to push on for the major international honours. Earlier this week, Glynn Evans caught up with ‘Super’ Skeete to reflect and speculate.

Four months on, how do you reflect on your British and Commonwealth title win over Sam Eggington?

It was definitely the finest performance of my career. I’d really put the work in, in the gym. My trainer Al (Smith) got the tactics ‘spot on’ and I stuck to the game plan. I possibly could’ve pressed it more to force a stoppage but that wasn’t part of the plan. Besides, Sam’s a very tough boy.

Though there was a bit of banter at the weigh-in and his fans were quite hostile during my ring walk, that just geed me up. The vibe was actually like being on holiday. I had almost 300 fans with me and felt really happy.

What aspects of your game have you been focusing on since, to prepare you for your assault on the major international belts?

You can always improve your strength and conditioning and gain experience but, stylistically, I don’t think I have to change too much. Already I’m a hard fight for any welterweight in the world. I’ve got this ‘nice guy’ image but my strength, toughness and grit always shock opponents.

What significance do you place on winning a Lonsdale Belt outright?

Huge. The Commonwealth belt is a bonus that could open doors for fights against Africans, Canadians and Australians down the line but, right now, my main concern is getting the Lonsdale for keeps. Unless, I’m offered something major, I want my next three fights after this to be British title defences and ideally two of them will happen this year.

After fighting on undercards, I now want to top bills. I had so many of my fights at the York Hall coming through, so how fantastic would it be to go back there as a defending British champion, everybody talking about me as the main event?

Who do you view as potential challengers?

As champion, I don’t need to call out names. Let them call out mine. Frankie Gavin is the only blemish on my record (23-1) and it’s a fight I still believe I won. I’d like to address that if it can be made but where is he? He’s gone underground.

I could fight Sam again and Dale Evans, who put up a very good challenge against Sam at short notice, also fights on the Cardiff bill so that could happen. Shane Singleton’s returned with a couple of good wins but I think I beat all of them, especially fighting at home and with a champion’s confidence. I intend to pick them off, one by one.

A logical future step would be to challenge Italian veteran Leonard Bundu for his European crown.

That would be a great fight for me; a nice belt and a good name to have on my record. He’s performed at world level so it would push me up there. That’s the kind of fight I need.

And I’d be very confident. I’d need to stay switched on but I believe my style would be all wrong for Bundu. He’s 5ft 6in short, 41 years old and would stay right in front of me. I don’t think he’d cope with my reach or movement. Frankie Gavin let Bundu get close and rough him up but I wouldn’t. I’d run away with it on points.

Already the IBF rank you eighth in line to Kell Brook and the WBO list you as number six contender to their champion Jessie Vargas. Are you ready for those kinds of tests?

Look, Kell would be a fight too soon for me. I’ve always rated him. There are world champions and elite world champions and he’s elite. I’m not chasing that. I don’t want to run before I can walk.

But Vargas? Most definitely. If Sam Eggington had beat me they were talking of getting him a world title fight so why not me?

Vargas moved up from light-welter last year so he isn’t massive and, like I say, my style gives anyone in the division problems. If I got my tactics right and performed at my best, I definitely think I could beat him.

Finally, what do you hope to get out of your 10 round WBO European title defence against France’s one-time European title challenger Alexandre Lepelley in Cardiff?

This will give me a low pressure run out and keep me sweet with the WBO. I’m not looking past Lepelley, mind. I refuse to take my eye off the ball. I intend to make a statement for all those who are queuing up to take my belts.

BOXING’S BIGGEST HITTER SERGEY KOVALEV TO DEFEND LIGHT-HEAVYWEIGHT CROWN AGAINST ISAAC CHILEMBA EXCLUSIVELY LIVE ON BOXNATION ON JULY 11TH

Sergey Kovalev
LONDON (July 4) – Pound-for-pound star Sergey Kovalev’s Russian homecoming against Isaac Chilemba will be screened exclusively live on BoxNation on Monday July 11th.

The undefeated and unified light-heavyweight world champion will be looking to add to his impressive destruction of the 175-pound division when he takes on the well-schooled Chilemba, who, despite three points losses has never been stopped in 29 fights.

The iron-fisted Kovalev on the other hand has racked up 26 knockouts in his 29 wins and will be out to do what no one has done before by knocking out Chilemba in front of his home fans at the DIVS Arena in Yekaterinburg, Russia.

33-year-old Kovalev is lined up to face Andre Ward later this year in a super-fight but Malawi born Chilemba is looking to crash the party and is hoping that the Russian has unwisely overlooked him.

Kovalev, however, has stated he will be raring to go come fight night when the two clash exclusively live on ‘The Channel of Champions’.

“I am so excited to fight in my home country of Russia,” said Kovalev. “It gives me great pride to bring my titles home at last. I would like to thank my manager, Egis Klimas, my promoter Kathy Duva and Igor Altushkin of Russian Copper Company for making this dream of mine a reality. Chilemba is a tough opponent and I will be ready for him on July 11.”

Chilemba, with 24 wins on his record, is undaunted at sharing the ring with one of boxing’s most feared punchers.

“I have met a lot of obstacles and every time I think I’ve got it right, I fall again, but I know my goals and I never stop following my dreams,” said Chilemba. “When I received a call from my manager Jodi Solomon regarding this opportunity, I was over the moon. I thank Sergey and his team for putting their titles on the line to face me, all I want to say to them is: they are in for a surprise; they gave the wrong guy an opportunity. I’ll work my ass off and I’m in it to win it! Russia here we come!”

Jim McMunn, BoxNation Managing Director, said: “This is a really intriguing fight because Sergey Kovalev cannot look too far ahead when he faces Isaac Chilemba. We have seen it many times in the past when fighters have overlooked opponents that are immediately in front of them and paid the price. There is no doubt that Kovalev is one of the most exciting and biggest punchers around so we are delighted to have him back on BoxNation.”

BoxNation will be airing a host of big fights exclusively live including Guillermo Rigondeaux v Jazza Dickens, Terence Crawford v Viktor Postol and Canelo Alvarez v Liam Smith.

Kovalev v Chilemba is exclusively live on BoxNation (Sky/Freeview/Virgin/TalkTalk/Online & App) on July 11th. To buy go to boxnation.com.

WARRINGTON: I’LL SHOW I HAVE POWER AGAINST HYLAND

Josh Warrington hopes to be dragged into a war so he can prove he as power when he defends his WBC International Featherweight title against Patrick Hyland at the First Direct Arena in Leeds on July 30, live on Sky Sports.

Warrington puts his title on the line for the third time having been taken the distance in two challenging battles at his hometown fortress in his last two outings.

Warrington won every round against tough Australian Joel Brunker in his first defence in September before Hisashi Amagasa presented an entirely different challenge in April as the ‘Leeds Warrior’ brilliantly handled a significant height disadvantage against the six-foot Japanese star to record another wide decision win.

The 25 year old now faces Irish fans’ favourite Hyland, who is back in action having challenged WBC king Gary Russell Jr for the World title in April, and Warrington believes the challengers’ come-forward style will make for an entertaining clash where he can show the World champions he carries KO power.

“Amagasa and Brunker were tough nights but we got the wins,” said Warrington. “Patrick has respect for me and I’ve got a lot of respect for him. He’s boxed for the World title earlier in the year so he’s been in with the very best and I know that this is a tough examination for me.

“I had to box clever in the last few fights, but I think this one will be toe-to-toe. Patrick doesn’t take a backwards step in his fights and I think that I’ll be able to show on July 30 that I can really dig and I think it’s going to be a great main event and one that I’ll shine in.

“This is a great show – it’s the best we’ve done so far in Leeds. The fans have put their hands in their pockets time and time again to come and see me and I think we’re delivering a brilliant card for them – the card oozes talent from top to bottom and it’s going to be a great night.”

Hyland is looking to bounce back from his second World title loss with a big win over Warrington, and he is excited to sample the raucous atmosphere that a night of top class boxing in Leeds offers.

“I’ve got a lot of fans coming over and the atmosphere is going to be electric,” said Hyland. “I’ve seen a lot of Josh’s fights and the noise is deafening so I can’t wait to be part of it.

“Gary Russell Jr is the best in the division. He is so, so fast and speed kills in this sport, but this is a different fight. I like how Josh fights and I’ve wanted to get in there with him to test him out and try to take that future World title shot that he’s looking at for myself. I think that we’ll end up standing toe-to-toe and giving the fans a real war.”

Warrington’s clash with Hyland tops a huge card in Leeds as Luke Campbell MBE faces his toughest test in the paid ranks to date in the shape of former World champion Argenis Mendez.

Huddersfield man Tyrone Nurse defends his British Super Lightweight title in an all-Yorkshire affair with Hull’s Tommy Coyle, Barnsley’s Josh Wale gets a shot at the Commonwealth Super-Bantamweight title against Birmingham’s unbeaten starlet Gamal Yafai, classy Belfast man Ryan Burnett defends his WBC International Bantamweight title and Brixton Heavyweight Dillian Whyte lands title action after returning from shoulder surgery with a win at The O2 in June.

Tickets are on sale now priced at £30, £40, £60 and £100 available from the First Direct Arena at www.firstdirectarena.com and on 0844 248 1585. VIP tickets priced at £150 are available exclusively from Matchroom Boxing at www.matchroomboxing.com.

Tickets for July 30 are also available from http://www.stubhub.co.uk/matchroom-boxing-tickets/ – StubHub is the official ticket partner and marketplace of Matchroom Boxing.

MORE PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES:

RYAN BURNETT: We’re putting in a lot of work in the gym. I found out the other day that a World title shot is around the corner and that’s really exciting for me and something to build towards. Lee Haskins and Stuart Hall will clash for Lee’s belt soon and I’m happy to be named in with guys at that level so soon – but if you are being named in there you have to be ready to step up. My trainer Adam Booth says I’m ready to mix it with them so now it’s time to prove that.

JOSH WALE– The last time here I boxed well so I am looking forward to it. Our styles will gel – people have outboxed me in my losses but not out fought me. The odds are really wrong, this is a close fight, no-one puts me on the floor and I think that Gamal is a good prospect but we’ll see how good he is, I’m tried and tested and if he wants to come and have a fight that will play into my hands.

DILLIAN WHYTE: I was a bit happier with my performance against Ivica Bacurin when I watched it back. Cruiserweights are big enough to hold a punch and they look faster than Heavyweights. Dave Allen looks like he wants to fight me so let’s get it on – if he really wants it I’m happy to KO him in Leeds. I want to fight a big Heavyweight who will stand in the pocket and trade with me so I can KO someone – the Leeds fans love a KO so they will love me if we can find a guy willing to have a proper fight. We’re British fighters so we want to fight around the country not just London, so I’m really excited about the 30th.

TOMMY COYLE: It’s every young fighters dream to fight for the Lonsdale belt – I didn’t expect to come this far in my career, so to get the chance to win the British title and be the first man from Hull to do so is a dream come true. I’ve got my work cut out; Tyrone’s a cute and talented fighter but I am confident that I can pull the win off. The weight is a big thing for me, we boxed as amateurs ten years ago and I was the same weight as I was as a Lightweight, so the five pounds is big for me. A leopard can’t change its spots, I’m going to go in there and enjoy it and drag him into my fight.

My younger brother has been at Leeds United since he was 6 and is now in the first team, so it’s got a special place in my heart.

There’s no big fight after this one to build towards, this is the one – no carrot, just beat Tyrone – and I think that my desire will be enough to get it done.

TYRONE NURSE: I’ve gone from being the boring boxer to being the young guy in good fights. I love that Lonsdale belt and I don’t want to let it go, we boxed years ago and it’s time to do it again. I know what he brings on the night but it won’t be enough and the World title fight with Ricky Burns is out there for me.

I get told off for getting involved in fights, but I feel I am getting bigger and stronger and I do enjoy getting into proper wars.

Braekhus up for historical homecoming

It was last week that an application from First Lady Promotions to arrange a bout in Norway was approved.

10,000 tickets to a show headlined by Cecilia Braekhus herself was released for sale the day after, and within 12 hours the first boxing event in Norway in over 30 years was sold out, despite the fact that an opponent is still to be announced.

Said Cecilia Braekhus:
– I am thrilled and happy for this outcome. After several months of hard work we finally got the approval we needed. I am proud of the team I have that has worked this through, and I am more excited than ever to perform in front of 10,000 Norwegian fans, said Braekhus.

– I have been dreaming of boxing in front of my home fans in my home country since I went pro nine years ago, and I am extremely motivated for this fight.

The colombian-born Norwegian has boxed out of Berlin, Germany, her entire career, due to a Norwegian ban against professional boxing.?The ban was lifted three years ago, but this is the first application that has been approved. There are still strict regulations for all sports that includes knock-outs, as well as harsh demands for anti-doping routines.

Said Morten Andreassen, CEO, First Lady Promotions:
– The Norwegian boxing fans has been waiting for this for over 30 years. On October 1, we will create a spectacular event and bring the very best of international boxing to the heart of Oslo, says Andreassen.

?Braekhus holds all major belts (WBA, WBC, WBO, IBF, IBO) in the welterweight-division, and has already set a solid mark in the history of boxing by becoming the first female undisputed champion.

From August 1st she will gather her team, among them trainer Johnathon Banks, and start the preparations for the historical evening in Norway.

Team Maldonado files WMMAA appeal to reassess result of June 17th Emelianenko vs. Maldonado fight in Russia

MONTE CARLO, Monaco (July 4, 2016) — The World Mixed Martial Arts Association (WMMAA) has received an appeal from Stefano Sartori, manager of Brazilian fighter Fabio Maldonado, to reassess the result of his June 17th fight with Fedor Emelianenko, which headlined Fight Nights Global 50 in Saint Petersburgh, Russia.

Emelianenko was awarded a win by majority decision, which Team Malondado has appealed, claiming a conflict of interest because all of the judges are employed by the Russian MMA Union, of which Emelianenko serves as president.

Team Maldonado believes Maldonando should have won the decision, or the fight declared a draw at the very least, in their opinion, as the Brazilian clearly won the first round, 10-8, Emelianenko came back to take the second round, 10-9, and the third round was a toss-up.

Because Russian MMA Union vice president Radmir Gabdullin was the head judge for the aforementioned bout, Team Maldonando feels that a fair judgement regarding its appeal can be rendered only by independent, international judges reviewing the fight.

Team Maldonando has appealed the decision on grounds that there was an obvious conflict of interest in terms of the Russian MMA Union judges and their close association with Fedor, as well as the quality of decisions they rendered. Rather than appeal the decision to the Russian MMA Union, which they claimed would place Russian judges under intense pressure, Team Maldonando made the appeal directly to the WMMAA because the Russian MMA Union is a sanctioned member of the worldwide sanctioning body WMMAA.

WMMAA president Vadim Finkelchtein has announced the following sequence of actions:

WMMAA Secretary General Alexander Engelhardt has been appointed to handle the appeal procedure
A group of objective international judges, under the guidance of experienced referee/judge Marco Broersen (Netherlands), to be appointed to assess the Emelianenko-Maldonado fight based on the tape and render an unbiased verdict regarding the fight and work of the judges
Temporarily suspend WMMAA head judge Radmir Gabdullin from his position
Discuss judges’ work at the next WMMAA Congress, taking into account the pending verdict of the independent commission

BANTAMWEIGHT RISING STAR OSCAR NEGRETE MAINTAINED HIS UNDEFEATED STATUS AS THE TELEVISED MAIN EVENT AIRING NATIONALLY ON ESTRELLA TV

LOS ANGELES (July 1, 2016) – Sparks flew at this special edition of LA FIGHT CLUB in front of a sold-out crowd this Friday night at downtown Los Angeles’ historic Belasco Theater. This event marked the beginning of the summer season for LA FIGHT CLUB with LA’s finest officers taking on the NYPD boxing team all to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Tonight’s can’t-miss event was attended by the likes of boxing legends old and new: Oscar de la Hoya, Ronny Rios, Carlos “The Solution” Morales, Ivan “Striker” Gonzalez, Christian “Chimpa” Gonzalez, Alexis Rocha, Nick Arce, Jason “El Animal” Quigley, Gilberto “El Flaco” Gonzalez, and Pablo “The Shark” Rubio Jr were all witness to the action ringside.

In the televised main event of the night, undefeated Colombian bantamweight warrior Oscar “Jaguar” Negrete (14-0, 5 KOs) of Los Angeles took on Ciudad Juarez, Mexico’s Jose “Flash” Bustos (11-6-3, 7 KOs) in a 10-round televised fight airing live nationally on Estrella TV’s Boxeo Estelar. Fight fans did not go home disappointed after witnessing the all-out brawl between rising Colombian fighter Oscar “Jaguar” Negrete and Jose “The Flash” Bustos. The Estrella TV Televised event demonstrated Negrete’s endurance and slick moves, as Negrete strung together several combinations to the head and managed to slip several of Bustos offenses throughout the fight. Neither man backed down, as Negrete and Bustos both stood their ground in their exchange of bashes on the inside to finish the fight. Bustos attempted to work the jab, however Negrete dodged many of them, looking to land counter strikes. With his movement, aggression and clean punching, the “Jaguar” won over the judges and earned a unanimous decision victory over Bustos to remain undefeated.

The live telecast, co-main event featured still undefeated super bantamweight prospect Emilio Sanchez (13-0, 9 KOs) of Los Angeles facing off against Hugo “Olímpico” Partida (20-8-2, 15 KOs) of Mexico City in an eight-round bout. There was much attrition throughout the fight, as both fighters launched their blows correspondingly. Partida’s left upper hand cut punches were distinctive of the fighter, however the fighter ran out of breath by the second round causing the referee to pause the fight. By the end of the second round, Sanchez began to dominate, over powering Partida with his punches while cornering him against the ropes. During the fight, the heated exchanges caused Partida to lose a point in the sixth round for spitting out his mouth guard three times. By the eighth round, Sanchez attempted to close out the fight with a bolstering amount of combination punches to the face. The judges all agreed–Sanchez was the clear winner, maintaining his undefeated record status via unanimous decision.

“My uppercuts were the key to pulling out the decision,” said Emilio Sanchez. “He kept his head low, so I thought my uppercuts were hurting him. He was a tough fighter and had great experience. I feel after this, I can continue facing tougher opponents and keep climbing the ladder in the super bantamweight division.”

Opening the televised portion of the night, Miami’s Niko “Baby Face” Valdes (2-0, 2 KO) fought in a scheduled four-round, super middleweight match against Michael Andrews (0-2) of New Mexico. In the first and second rounds, Andrews tripped over his foot, losing his balance as Valdes landed various left and right arm punches to the face leaving Andrews stunned various times throughout the rounds. Valdes kept putting the pressure on Andrews, overwhelming him with a series of jabs. By the end of the third round, Andrews suffered a bloody nose, resulting in his corner stopping the fight. The stoppage awarded Valdes with a technical knockout victory.

“I’d give myself a B+ after that performance,” said Niko Valdes. “I was keeping my hands too far down during that fight and wasn’t putting together my combinations, but I felt very comfortable out there, maybe the most comfortable I’ve felt in the ring. It was very important for me to be patient when I saw he kept coming back, I didn’t want to flurry and unleash my entire punch load at once.”

The last amateur fight of the night presented action from Daniel Rosales of the LAPD Southwest division taking on Nelson Cordero of NYPD participating in a three-round middleweight match showcasing both of the fighters’ intensity. In the second round, Rosales knocked Cordereo down, but Cordero bounced back quickly to retaliate against Rosales. The third round was difficult to watch for fight fans, as both fighters tackled each other in the ring. The judges all unanimously decided that Rosales was the clear winner.

“It felt good out there, I felt strong,” said Daniel Rosales. “The atmosphere, the officiating, and the preparation made you feel like a superstar, and we’re doing it for a great cause so it was an all-around great night.”

“It was an intense fight,” exclaimed Nelson Cordero. “Coming into the second round it felt close, my opponent was tough. I always say that the best man should win, and tonight it was him.”

Heavyweight amateurs Carlos Rosas of the LAPD Newton Division went head to head with Luis Pena of the Oxnard PAL Program. Rosas was ready to take on his opponent, knocking the wind out of him at the top of the second round. Pena, in exchange, landed various uppercuts and jabs to the face, stunning Rosas. The fighters were in a crossfire for most of the fight, with the judges awarding a split decision to Pena.

“It was great,” spoke Rosas, “I hope Oscar De La Hoya keeps giving us this platform, it was such a great experience. These fans are awesome, they’re not just here for us but they’re also here for such a great cause, the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and I hope we get to do more of this in the future.”

“Boxing at the Belasco Theater for a Golden Boy fight was amazing. The atmosphere and energy was electric, especially getting to fight and do what I love for such a great cause, there’s no better feeling,” said Pena of his victory.

Dennis Burgess of the NYPD defeated Brian Petrella of the Pasadena Police department in their scheduled three-round light heavyweight fight. During the fight, the fighters exhibited their resilience in the ring, enduring the explosive amount of punches exhibited by both fighters. The judges all agreed that Burgess was the clear winner, awarding him the victory via unanimous decision.

“I love participating in these events. Anything that I can do to help the community is a very rewarding experience for me,” said Burgess.

“This fight was an improvement for me and I want to thank the Pasadena Police department and my team for helping me participate in this great event,” exclaimed Petrella, “My mother passed away from cancer and this event was very important for me personally. I am thankful to have the ability, strength, shape, will and determination to continue to give back to those in need fighting cancer.”

The fourth fight of the night featured Dustin Rodriguez, of the Santa Monica Fire Department taking on amateur fighter Billy Ramirez of the NYPD. Dusty was quick with his punches, landing significant blows to the face. Ramirez retaliated, cornering Rodriguez and landing good shots by the end of the first round. In the second round, Rodriguez landed a power punch to the head causing Ramirez to lose his balance. The event turned into an all-out brawl by the last round, with both fighters engaging in a series of punches. Rodriguez landed the victory via unanimous decision.

“It feels great to perform in front of a crowd and also give back to the community,” said Dustin Rodriguez. “I am glad that the fight tonight will provide funds to find a cure for cancer.”

“This is my first event with the NYPD boxing team,” said Billy Ramirez. “And it has been a great learning experience. I will take back what I learned tonight and only improve for the next event.”

In the third fight of the night, Eriverto Montano of the LAPD Foothill Division, took on Jonathan Alvarez of the NYPD in a light heavyweight bout full of action. Both fighters traded blows equally with Alvarez consistently cornering Montano on the ropes. In the end, the judges gave the victory to Alvarez via unanimous decision.

“I feel privileged to have participated in this event. I have a family member currently battling cancer and I feel glad that the money raised today will help contribute to all of the people battling cancer,” said Montano.

“This is my fifth fight with the department and I am glad to give back to a great cause,” said Alvarez, “I’m always up to fight for charity and am a proud member of the NYPD.”

Dre Fonseca of the LAPD’s Northeast Division represented the red corner, as she took on fellow City of Angels PAL Program’s Isabel Reyes as the first female amateur fight of the night. The fighters were eager to get into the ring, landing their punches to the body and face. Fonseca’s uppercut punches dominated and wore down Reyes. In the end it was Fonseca’s consistent pressure on Reyes that lead her to claim a unanimous decision victory.

“I am just so excited to be able to represent LAPD in this positive light,” said Fonseca, “I wish more people could see all the work we do, and this event is proof of that-that we support charity organizations like Susan G Komen. I am filled with adrenaline after my win, and I love the fact that I am following some of my father’s footsteps being a police officer and fighting in these kinds of fights.”

“I am so glad that this was my amateur debut-I wish I had another three rounds to go in!” said Reyes, “The energy in the ring is incomparable to anything I have ever experienced, and hearing the fans shout in excitement was insane. I can’t wait to do this again.”

John Byun representing LAPD took on Alex Cintron of NYPD to kick off of the night in a light heavyweight match. The amateur fight featured two zealous fighters who were eager to land their punches. Byun’s effective right punches to the body went up against the right arm jabs to the face of Cintron. By round 3, the fury of punches were too much for Byun, and resulted in a TKO 55 seconds into the round.

“It was a good experience that made me determine my weaknesses,” said Byun, “I am taking this as a learning experience and I am proud to have represented by team in for a great cause. I have had people in my life that have dealt with breast cancer and I am glad that I can do my part to support their fight.”

“This is my first victory as a NYPD officer and I am glad I was able to share the ring with my LAPD brother,” said Cintron, “I want to thank Tiger Schulmanns of the MMA for all their help training for this fight.”

LA FIGHT CLUB: Negrete vs. Bustos, was presented by Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Cerveza Tecate, BORN BOLD, Casa Mexico Tequila, Carmelita Coconut Water and Hands of Stone in theaters August. ZAC DUNN SCORES FIFTH ROUND TKO OVER JEREZ

July1, Melbourne, AUSTRALIA/New York

Star Boxing’s undefeated Super Middleweight Zac Dunn (22-0 18KO Melbourne, AU), made another huge statement, outclassing durable veteran Carlos Jerez (43-20-3) en route to a fifth round TKO at The Melbourne Pavilion, Flemington, Victoria, AU. Crocodile Dunn controlled the pace throughout the contest, until Jerez’ corner had seen enough at the conclusion of the fifth round today in Australia.

Dunn fired away with vicious body shots and combinations to the head and body round after round. Jerez, who went the distance with Saul (Canelo) Alvarez, Lucas Matthysse and John Jackson, was absorbing tremendous punishment and firing back. Dunn’s assault continued, his left hook was noticeably landing and slowing his opponent down. By the fifth round, the writing was on the wall.

Promoter Joe DeGuardia had this to say about Dunn’s performance “Impressive! Dunn barreled through a tough competitor like Jerez who has been the distance with some of the best. It says something that he couldn’t stay in there with Dynamo Dunn. He’s a dominant force and it’s time for us to start looking for the big names in the division. He’s ready to take on anyone at 168”

Dunn is currently rated in all 4 sanctioning bodies, #9 IBF and WBO, #8 WBC, and #14 WBA and last year won the IBO World Title.

Jamel Herring, Denis Shafikov, Patryk Szymanski & Wilky Campfort Media Workout Quotes

Jamel Herring (640x480)
READING, PA. (July 1, 2016) – Four fighters set for pivotal showdowns this Saturday, July 2 held an open media workout Thursday as they prepare for their Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN and ESPN Deportes battles live from Santander Arena in Reading, PA.

Unbeaten lightweight contender Jamel “Semper Fi” Herring will take on former title challenger Denis Shafikov in the main event of the evening. Televised coverage begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and features unbeaten Polish prospect Patryk Szymanski taking on former title challenger “Silky” Wilky Campfort.

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by King’s Promotions, are priced at $20, $35, $55 and $75, and are on sale now via Ticketmaster.

Here is what the fighters had to say Thursday:

JAMEL HERRING

“Camp was great. I started in Cincinnati and finished in D.C. with Barry Hunter, Patrice Harris and of course Mike Stafford. During my time in D.C., I sparred with Lamont Peterson, who turned southpaw for me.

“I have a great deal of respect for Shafikov. Tough guy, experienced but he had his chance and it’s my time now. This is my toughest fight on paper but I feel good. It’s my time to earn my respect.

“It’s a huge honor and blessing to headline on ESPN on 4th of July weekend. I want to put on a good show,

“Its extra special to honor on this weekend, being that I was a marine and to headline and I want to put on a patriotic and great performance.

“I believe a win will open the doors for a world title. In my mind, I am taking this fight as a world title fight. That is how important this fight is and before the end of the year, I hope to get a crack at a world title.”

DENIS SHAFIKOV

“Everything went well in camp. We had a four-month camp. We were supposed to fight a couple of months ago but when that fight was cancelled, Denis relaxed for a minute and then this opportunity came up.

“Herring has a great record and he represented the U.S. in the Olympics. He is still young and I feel that my experience will be the determining factor.

“I accepted this fight because a win gets us in line for big opportunities, including another shot at a world championship.”

PATRYK SZYMANSKI

“I’m excited about the opportunity to take on an experienced opponent. I think it will be a good test for me and a chance to show off my skills.

“I’ve worked very hard so that I can leave an impression with my performance. These are the kind of fights that I have to win and win in style if I want to reach my goals in this sport.”

WILKY CAMPFORT

“Training camp went very well. I don’t know too much about my opponent but I did see him fight once in Tampa. Come Saturday night, I will see what he has.

“It means a lot to fight on ESPN. The first fight that I saw that involved a fellow Haitian was Daniel Edouard on ESPN and it gave me a lot of motivation to pursue my career.

“I am not only fighting for myself, but all of the people in Haiti and Florida that have been supporting me.

“A win will put me right back into where I was when I had my long winning streak. A win will put me back in the mix at 154-pounds.”

“YOUNG GUNS” TO FEATURE NEW MEXICO’S FUTURE CHAMPIONS, MALDONADO, GRIEGO, MENDOZA, ALONG WITH PHILADELPHIA’S JARON “BOOTS” ENNIS

RIO RANCHO, NEW MEXICO – July 1, 2016 – New Mexico’s rising crop of boxing prospects descends on the Santa Ana Star Center Saturday, July 9th, in a ten-bout event showcasing both local and national blue-chip talent, presented by Victory Boxing. The promotional company, founded by Chris Middendorf, made headlines in April with its debut event in Utah, which featured a slew of undefeated, world class talent, and Victory Boxing is poised to deliver that same quality and exposure to New Mexico boxing fans.

In the main event, “The Atrisco Kid,” Fidel Maldonado, Jr. (21-3-1, 18KO) faces Mexico’s Gerardo “Pipino” Cuevas in an eight round bout at lightweight. Maldonado impressed New Mexico fans and media in January with a second round knockout win over the experienced Michael Clark. This is his first fight at home after a subsequent draw in a hard-fought battle with Armenian Art Hovhannisyan. “I can’t wait to put on a show for my hometown fans,” said Maldonado. “He’s fought a lot of tough guys but when he fights top competition he loses. You can’t overlook the guy, though, because he has power.” Maldonado will have his father, Fidel Maldonado, Sr., a fixture of New Mexico boxing, in his corner on fight night.

In the co-main event, Albuquerque favorite Matthew “Diamond Boy” Griego (5-0, 5KO) returns to fight at home in a four round flyweight bout. Griego, who travels with a huge contingent of “Team Diamond Boy” fans, will look to keep his knockout streak going in front of his hometown crowd. The young fighter, who had over 110 amateur fights, often draws comparisons to fellow New Mexican Johnny Tapia, both in fighting style and heart.

Another New Mexico native, Cuban-American Brian “La Bala” Mendoza (13-0, 9KO) of Rio Rancho will face Dona Ana’s Daniel Calzada. Calzada is the toughest fight Mendoza has had to date, but the fighter’s manager, Cameron Dunkin, isn’t worried. “He hits like a freight train,” said Dunkin of Mendoza. “He’s getting better every fight.”

Dunkin signee Alex Holguin (8-1, 5KO), will make his debut under the Victory Boxing promotional banner. He faces MMA fighter George Roybal in a four round contest at Super Featherweight.

National prospect Jaron “Boots” Ennis (3-0, 3KO), who is coming off his third straight knockout win, will make an appearance on the card against an as yet to be determined opponent, over four rounds at super lightweight. Ennis, who is also managed by Dunkin, was a four-time National Champion and Olympic alternate, who made his debut on the Victory Promotions’ inaugural card in April. Fellow amateur standout and prospect-to-watch Carlos Sanchez (7-0, 7KO) will make his New Mexico debut, undoubtedly wearing his now trademark serape into the ring. He looks to continue his knockout streak against Christopher Russell of Oklahoma in a four round, super lightweight bout. Donovan Cameron (3-0, 3KO), who hails from Manchester England, by way of Las Vegas, will face Hobbs, New Mexico fighter Oscar Espinoza at super welterweight.

New Mexico fighters Ronald Baca (5-3-1, 2KO) and Randy McCarty (1-1-1, 0KO) will battle it out at heavyweight and Eliju Sena (2-0, 1KO) rounds out the card.

“This is the beginning of a long relationship we hope to have with the fight fans, boxing community, and businesses of Albuquerque,” said Promoter Chris Middendorf. “We are building champions, and hope to bring many belts home to New Mexico. We’ve already planned two additional dates here this year, and hope that the fight fans and media will be out to see world class level talent in action, right here in New Mexico.”

Tickets are priced at $54.75, $29.75 and are available at victoryboxingpromotions.com. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. on fight night. First bell is at 7:00 p.m.

ANTHONY JOSHUA IS WILLIAM HILL’S FAVOURITE FOR SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR

Anthony Joshua
Anthony Joshua MBE is the 4/1 favourite with William Hill to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

Joshua defended his IBF World Heavyweight title in style on June 25, stopping the brave unbeaten American Dominic Breazeale in the seventh round at The O2 in London.

Joshua landed the belt at the Greenwich venue in April, ripping the crown from another unbeaten American, Charles Martin, inside two rounds thanks to a pair of vicious right hands.

The Olympic gold medal hero will take a break over the summer before defending his belt for the second time later in the year, where another strong performance could see him become the first boxer to win the award since Joe Calzaghe in 2007 and the fifth fighter to take the trophy home following two-time winner Henry Cooper, Barry McGuigan, Lennox Lewis and Calzaghe.

“Anthony Joshua is one of the most adored sports personalities in the country,” said Tony Kenny, head of sponsorship PR at William Hill. “If you couple that with his World championship winning performance this year then it’s easy to see why he’s our favourite to win the BBC award.”

Leicester City and England striker Jamie Vardy is second favourite at 5/1 with Real Madrid and Wales hero Gareth Bale at 9/1. Andy Murray won the award for the second time in 2015 and is 10/1 to make it a hat-trick as he bids for glory at Wimbledon and the Olympics in Rio, and he’s joined at that price by Jessica Ennis-Hill who bids to defend her Heptathlon gold this summer.

The 2016 BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony takes place at the Genting Arena in Birmingham on December 18.

William Hill have backed three of Joshua’s fight nights so far and signed a deal ahead of his first defence to back the next three blockbuster shows topped by the Heavyweight sensation.

Staying true to his word, Bonilla steps up to face champion DeLomba after issuing challenge in May

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (June 30th, 2016) — When Oscar Bonilla approached CES Boxing matchmaker Michael Parente about fighting the winner of the May 13thNick DeLomba-Freddy Sanchez title bout, he really only had one opponent in mind.

“I honestly thought Freddy Sanchez was going to win,” Bonilla admitted, “but, hey, DeLomba’s conditioning was phenomenal and he pulled it off. That’s who I was really aiming for, but, you know, I’m a man of my word and I told you I wanted to fight the winner and DeLomba won, so that’s my next opponent.”

Staying true to his word, the Bridgeport, Conn., vet Bonilla (3-1-2) will face DeLomba (9-1, 2 KOs) in a six-round bout Friday, July 15th, 2016 on the undercard of CES Boxing’s summertime spectacular at Twin River Casino for DeLomba’s New England Super Lightweight Title. It will be DeLomba’s first title defense since capturing the vacant crown May 13th by beating Sanchez via unanimous decision and Bonilla’s first fight since last May, ending a 14-month layoff.

“I respect each and every fighter that gets in the ring with me,” DeLomba said. “This isn’t an easy game. It takes a lot of hard work, determination and guts to get in that ring and duke it out, so I respect anyone who wants to step up and take the challenge.

“[Bonilla] is a typical, come-forward, hard-working fighter. We’re not taking him lightly because we know he’s training for the title, so he’s going to train his hardest and come for us. We’re just going to get in the best shape we can and we’re going to go out there and perform, have another fabulous night and come out on top.”

DeLomba, a Cranston, R.I., native, fought most of his career at 147 pounds before dropping to a career-low 141 against Sanchez. He and Bonilla will fight at the super lightweight limit of 140, a major jump for Bonilla, who has never fought heavier than 135.

“I’m confident,” Bonilla said. “It is a big difference from 130 to 140, but I fought at 135 before and I’ve sparred many, many heavier people. It’s not something I’ve never experienced before. It’s just another opponent.”

While Bonilla may have been targeting Sanchez, he’s more than familiar with DeLomba’s body of work. Two years ago in just his fourth pro fight, the underdog DeLomba beat 12-fight vet and Bonilla’s former stable mate Edwin Soto in Connecticut.

“That win against Soto was actually shocking to me knowing Soto from when we were younger,” Bonilla said. “We grew up together and used to train together. Our amateur careers, we were growing up together, and I’ve seen how he’s fought and I’ve seen his ability. To beat him, it was like, ‘Wow, this kid is good.’ That just motivated me even more to be the next opponent in front of him.”

“I fought Edwin right in his backyard,” DeLomba recalled. “It was a tough fight. I had big gash over my eye. I got head-butted twice. Accidental head-butts. Typical righty-lefty clash of the heads. From the third round onto the sixth, I had to battle him seeing out of one eye. That fight was a war.”

Bonilla will get his wish July 15th, albeit as the self-proclaimed underdog against the veteran DeLomba, and it’ll be a welcomed change for DeLomba, who considered himself the underdog two months ago against Sanchez and weeks before the bout said, “there are going to be a hell of a lot of people in the stands … coming to watch me lose this fight.” The reigning champ was coming off a knockout loss to Gledwin Ortiz while Sanchez entered with a perfect 7-0 record and five knockout wins.

“Even though I fought the tougher opposition and my record speaks for itself, coming off that last fight I was the underdog and everyone was thinking maybe I was on the way out and Freddy was going to be the new rising star,” DeLomba said, “but we had 100 percent confidence we were going to win that fight.”

The roles have reversed for July 15th. DeLomba is back on top while Bonilla is the one with something to prove.

“I do feel that I am the underdog,” he said, “but ever since I started my pro career I’ve always been the underdog, so it’s really not that surprising to me. I do know for a fact I am the underdog. I know I’m on the ‘B’ side, but, like I said, that’s not taking anything from me.

“Once that bell rings, may the best man win. That’s it. Like I said, I’ve spoken to Nick before. He really seems like he’s a hell of a guy, but once the bell rings we don’t know each other. When the bell rings again, we can celebrate together.”

While DeLomba has turned his career around and found a permanent home with trainer Victor Fagnant, Bonilla has made several changes to his inner circle through the years, choosing now to stick with family first, namely his father, in addition to his trainer Carlos Nieves of Bridgeport.

“Me, my father, we’re doing this alone,” Bonilla said. “Carlos Nieves is actually giving me a hand, but, like I said, I told you I wanted to fight the winner. It’s not like I had someone backing me up or helping me get this fight. This is something I did. We’re doing this alone. We’ll see what happens.”

Undefeated Providence, R.I., native Angel Camacho Jr. (15-0, 5 KOs) headlines the July 15th card and puts his Universal Boxing Federation (UBF) International and New England Light Heavyweight Titles on the line in the 10-round main event against Willimantic, Conn., vet Kevin Cobbs (10-2, 4 KOs).
