Justin Jones Taking Boxing to Another Level Training with Boxing Legend and Texas Boxing Hero ‘Termite’ Watkins

Given the size of his dreams, the pairing of the undefeated Houston-based heavyweight Justin “Jawbreaker” Jones (18-0-1, 11 KOs) and Texas boxing legend Maurice “Termite” Watkins is ideal. When you’re an unknown fighter looking to ‘come from out of nowhere’ and become world champion, who better to have as your trainer than a man known for working fistic miracles?

“Termite has me doing things I have never done before,” said Jones. “He’s a work-ethic guy. He makes me throw a lot of punches and wants me busy all the time. He wants me to throw 250 punches, per round, on the bag. That’s unheard of for a heavyweight. He makes me push myself you know? I really think I’m going to break a CompuBox record someday.”

A well-respected trainer and former fighter, Watkins retired in 1990 with a record of 61-5-2, 41 KOs. He challenged for the WBC Super Lightweight Championship in 1980, losing a close 15-round decision. But he is probably known best for a pair of stunning achievements.

Heavily decorated as an amateur boxer (128 wins – 10 losses), in 1974, Watkins won the National Golden Gloves in the featherweight division at age 16, the first fighter to ever do so at that age. Also at age 16, he was made a member of the USA National Team, and bunked and travelled the world with future champions Sugar Ray Leonard and Howard Davis Jr.

But perhaps his biggest claim to fame, and the one that has Hollywood producers calling for rights to his story, is the tale of how he ended up leading the entire country of Iraq to the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.

“I got a phone call one night and they needed pest control people in Iraq and I was born and raised in that business. I applied to go and was finally accepted. One day, the general who knew I was a fighter pulled me in his office and asked me what the odds were of getting Iraq to the Olympics for boxing? I said one in a million. He said ‘great all we need is one. I expect you to get it done.’ And that’s what I did.”

Watkins then opened a boxing gym in Al-Hilla Iraq and formed the first Iraqi boxing team of the New Iraq, worked with the new Iraq, Ministry of Sports in Bagdad, Iraq, as a representative of the US government and held a box-off to who would make the new Iraqi Olympic Boxing Team.

For two months, I tried calling the Olympic Committee and the IOC to tell them I was putting a team together in Iraq. They wouldn’t answer my calls. I was persistent. Finally, they told me if you can win one of the qualifiers or get runner up, you can go. We went to the first qualifier in the Philippines and won and they didn’t give us the decision. Then same thing in China. Pakistan. Same thing. It looked hopeless.

Then one day I got a call that Iraq was being offered a special pass to compete in several events and I ended up taking the country to the Olympics and was their leader. It was an amazing story.”

These days, Watkins is happily running his Fighter Nation Gym he founded in Houston, on the grounds of the Fellowship of the Nations church, where he tries offer young fighters moral and spiritual mentoring on top of the sweet science.

“I come from the old school where fundamentals are key,” continued Watkins. “When Justin and I started working together, I started him from the beginning again. My expectations are tough. No drinking. No drugs. I don’t even want to be around fighters that have a filthy mouth. I train my fighters hard and try to maintain a positive energy in the gym. Fights many times are won or lost in the mind. I don’t scream and yell. I’m positive.”

Watkins says that while Jones has all the power and drive to be a top contender, he’s been helping him work on some of the finer points of the sport.

“I was a real slick fighter and now I’m slowly teaching him that slickness. We work a lot on being slick in there. I also spend time with him on giving him the attitude that he can do anything he puts his mind on.”

“I’ve improved a lot,” said Jones. “Termite has me working on things like foot movement and mixing up punch intensity to set up my shots. You can only learn things like that from someone who fought before. He knows a lot of things that regular trainers don’t know. The experience he has is going to make me a lot better. I threw 70 jabs in one round the other day; different kinds of jabs. Up-jabs and body jabs and combinations with the jab. I can hit a guy anywhere I want to now, in the shoulder, stomach, head, everywhere.

Louisiana boxing guru Kerry Daigle, who brought fighter and trainer together through mutual friendships, says the duo are going to make a big impression on the heavyweight division soon.

“Speed in sports is what creates champions to rise that 1 to 2 percent above contenders,” said Daigle. “Football, basketball, track, and hockey are sports where the word ‘speed’ is used to compliment extraordinary athletes. You don’t hear that compliment much anymore in heavyweight boxing since the days of Ali. Triple J, as we all know Justin Jones, is a heavyweight with the speed of a fast middleweight that is able to throw six- to eight-punch combinations in a matter of seconds. The public hasn’t seen the undefeated sensation in a nationally televised fight yet, but will fall in love with him as he brings extraordinary gifts to the squared circle. His new trainer, the former contender who was known for his speed and intellect in the ring, Termite Watkins, is developing him into a complete fighter. Watkins, who understands the power of throwing ‘punches in bunches’ has come out of retirement to train TRIPLE J because of what he saw in Justin’s training at a local gym. We are searching for a top-10 fighter to step up and challenge Justin. Look for him to shine on national TV before the end of the year as Warriors Boxing President, Leon Margules, takes over the reins of promoting Triple J.”

Taras Shelestyuk stops Erick Martinez after three rounds to capture WBA International Welterweight title

Taras Shelestyuk
Ontario, California (May 23, 2016) – On Friday night at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, California, 2012 Olympic Bronze medal winner, Taras “Real Deal” Shelestyuk, stopped Erick Martinez in a scheduled 10-round bout to win the vacant WBA International title.

Martinez did not come out after the third round. With the win, Shelestyuk remains undefeated, raising his perfect mark to 14-0 as he notched his ninth stoppage in the process.

Shelestyuk, already the WBO NABO Welterweight champion and ranked number-11 by the WBO, added more hardware for his mantle and will crack the WBA world ratings with the win.

“This was a very good win for Taras. We are now looking to move him to a more meaningful fight in August. He is ranked by the WBO and now will be in the WBA, so it looks like he will be back in the ring in August defending his titles,” said Banner Promotions President, Arthur Pelullo.

“Taras delivered a noteworthy performance that will no doubt lead to bigger fights down the road,” said Ken Thompson, who launched Thompson Boxing Promotions sixteen years ago this month. ” Taras is seen as an emerging talent. The impressive knockout win will certainly raise his national profile.”

BOXNATION TO SHOW FUTURE HALL-OF-FAMER SHANE MOSLEY’S RING RETURN EXCLUSIVELY LIVE THIS SATURDAY NIGHT

Pacquiao_Mosley_110507_009a
LONDON (23 May) – The ring return of future Hall-of-Famer and boxing great ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley will be exclusively live on BoxNation as he challenges interim WBA welterweight champion David Avanesyan this Saturday night.

44-year-old Mosley is coming off an impressive stoppage win over Venezuelan Patrick Lopez last December as he takes on the tough Russian Avanesyan, who has just a solitary defeat on his record after 23 fights.

The victor of the bout is stipulated by the WBA to face the winner of next month’s clash between Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter, increasing the stakes for both fighters as they look to capture the regular world title at 147-pounds.

Taking place at Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona, three-weight world champion Mosley will have the backing of boxing icon and new trainer Roberto Duran in his corner.

“I plan to put on a clinic,” Mosley said. “I’m not just going to win. I’m going to annihilate him. In 2009 they said I was done but they were wrong. I’m glad people know this is a real competitive fight. It will be a challenge, but when I win, the world will know.”

Mosley has bounced back with two impressive wins since his 2013 stoppage loss against Anthony Mundine, gaining victories against former two-weight champion Ricardo Mayorga before his most recent triumph over Lopez.

Overcoming Avanesyan will prove his stiffest test since Mundine, however, with the skilled Russian being first-ranked by the WBA and having never been stopped in his career.

To watch Mosley v Avanesyan exclusively live on BoxNation (Sky/Freeview/Virgin/TalkTalk/Online & App) this Saturday night, go to boxnation.com to subscribe.

DILLIAN WHYTE JOINS MATCHROOM BOXING

Dillian Whyte has signed a multi-fight deal with Matchroom Boxing and will return to action at The O2 in London on June 25, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

Whyte is back in the ring after shoulder surgery following his epic battle with Anthony Joshua MBE at the Greenwich venue for the British and Commonwealth Heavyweight titles in December, and now finds himself mandatory for the British title once again.

The Brixton star has been out since that night with a shoulder issue, but with that problem behind him he’s ready to return to action and has his sights set on the British title and a rematch with Joshua for the World crown.

“I’m excited to team up with Matchroom and Sky Sports and can’t wait to return to the ring on June 25 back at The O2,” said Whyte. “The Heavyweight division is alive and I want a piece of it – we want that British title and then a shot at the World title. I always come to fight, will take on anyone and always give the fans excitement.”

“I’m delighted to welcome Dillian to the team and I look forward to making some exciting Heavyweight fights with him in the very near future,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “Dillian was part of one of the most exciting bouts in recent Heavyweight times on December 12 against Anthony and is now one of the most high profile fighters in the UK. We are looking forward to challenging for the British title in the summer and I’m confident he will be a real player in the Heavyweight division.”

Whyte joins a stellar cast at The O2 on June 25 as Anthony Joshua MBE defends his IBF World Heavyweight title against unbeaten American Dominic Breazeale.

George Groves and Martin Murray meet in a mouth-watering domestic Super-Middleweight blockbuster and WBA World title eliminator bout, Chris Eubank Jr defends his British Middleweight title against Welshman Tom Doran, John Wayne Hibbert clashes with Andrea Scarpa for the vacant WBC Silver Super-Lightweight title, Conor Benn is in action for the third time in the paid ranks and there’s a debut for Team GB star Felix Cash.

EDDIE GOMEZ DEFEATS JOHN KARL SOSA VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION TO SECURE THE IBF NORTH AMERICAN WELTERWEIGHT TITLE

LOS ANGELES (May 20, 2016) – Golden Boy Promotions delivered an exciting night of fights on May 20 at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, Calif. as Eddie “E-Boy” Gomez (19-1, 11 KOs) defeated John Karl Sosa (13-2, 6 KOs) via unanimous decision, earning the IBF North American Welterweight Title.

Broadcast live on Estrella TV and streaming live simultaneously on Ring TV, estrellaTV.com and on YouTube via Fenomeno Studios, the pride of the Bronx Gomez started off the fight carefully as he kept his distance using the jab effectively landing punches. By the third round, it was clear that the fight was very equal as both fighters went after each other attacking the body and landing hard shots to the head. Sosa, consistently landed an effective right hook that at times shocked Gomez, while Gomez continued to use his fast hands to throw combinations at Sosa. As the fight went to the cards, the judges awarded the victory to Gomez with scores of 96-94, 98-92, 96-94.

“I have been out of the ring for 13 months and at times I did feel a little ring rust, but I fought my fight,” said Eddie Gomez. “What matters is that I came back a winner with a new title to my name. I want to thank my team for the hard work and I am ready to go back home and get to my family. It was a long training camp, and I am ready for some rest and then back to the drawing board. I know this title is going to take me to the next level.

“I feel disappointed, I have seen a lot of bad things in boxing, but I would have never thought that this would have happened to me,” said John Karl Sosa. “After my last outing I knew I had to come back ready to prove to everyone that I was a force to be reckoned with. I was in the best shape and condition of my career, I felt strong and I knew during the fight that I had it. I was confident and had dominated Gomez, but I was robbed. This loss makes me angry and I am going to come back with a vengeance and prove all those judges wrong.”

The co-main event of the night, featured southpaw fighter Fidel “The Atrisco Kid” Maldonado Jr. (21-3-1, 18 KOs) of Albuquerque, N.M. going up against Glendale, Calif.’s Art “Lionheart” Hovhannisyan (17-2-3, 9 KOs). The scheduled 10-round lightweight televised bout went the distance in an exciting exchanged that had fight fans cheering on the fighters throughout. Always an exciting fighter, Maldonado Jr. went after Hovhannisyan and relentlessly attacked him. However, Hovhannisyan proved to be a tough opponent fighting back every attack. After suffering a knock down in the eighth round, Hovhannisyan came back with a vengeance winning the ninth and tenth rounds on the cards. In the end the exciting bout of the night was called a split draw with scores of 92-96 for Hovhannisyan, 95-93 for Maldonado Jr., and 94-94.

“I felt confident going into this fight,” said Fidel Maldonado Jr. “I thought that Hovhannisyan would be a harder puncher but when I didn’t feel hurt I decided to work in from the inside. I felt like I was ahead on the cards and did not like the decision from the judges. But it was an exciting fight and I am glad that the crowd enjoyed it.”

“I have been out of the ring for two years and this fight has really given me the confidence to continue fighting,” said Art Hovhannisyan. “The crowd cheering us on really motivated me and although I didn’t win today I know that I can continue fighting and give my fans great fights. I’m looking forward to the next one and I want to thank my team and Golden Boy Promotions for this opportunity.”

In the night’s swing bout, local undefeated prospect, Jesus Sanchez (1-0, 1 KOs) of Indio, Calif. took on fellow undefeated Livan “Machine Gun” Navarro (2-0) of Havana, Cuba in a four-round welterweight swing bout. Early on Navarro displayed his dominance by sending Sanchez to the canvas in the third round winning the fight via knockout.

“I am very happy with the result of this fight,” said Livan Navarro. “I always train 100% for every fight and today the training showed off. I want to thank my team for their continual support and Golden Boy Promotions for this opportunity.”

Cancun, Quintanroo, Mexico’s, Joseph “Diamante” Aguirre (13-0, 8 KOs) now fighting out of Riverside, Calif. participated in a six-round lightweight bout making his U.S debut facing Rony Alvarado (9-8, 5 KOs)of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Both Mexican warriors quickly went after each other during the first round. Aguirre established his dominance early during the second round and third rounds landing effective left hooks and an accidental head-butt opened up a cut on Alvarado’s right eye. In the fourth round, Aguirre tried his best to do dispatch Alvarado as they each erupted in an exciting exchange that had the crowd on its feet. By the fifth the blood coming from Alvarado right eye was too much and the doctor was called in to examine the cut and declared Alvarado unfit to continue. Aguirre was crowned the victor via technical decision with scores of 50-45 by all three judges.

“This is my first time fighting in the U.S. and I feel at home,” said Joseph Aguirre. “The crowd really gave me a warm reception, I guess they liked my style. It feels good to be here, I have been training with Joel Diaz and it showed tonight. I’m looking forward to my next fight in the U.S. and soon enough give all my new fans a new world champion.”

Starting off the night, streaming live on Ring TV, D’Mitirus “Big Meech” Ballard (13-0, 9 KOs) of Washington, D.C. put his undefeated record on the line in a scheduled eight-round super middleweight fight against Tijuana, Mexico’s Victor “Sina” Fonseca (9-7-1, 7 KOs). The fight started off quickly with both fighters letting loose aiming shots at the body. In the second round Ballard began to take the lead in the fight and corned Fonseca on the ropes wearing him down. By the third round “Big Meech” delivered a blow at the body that dropped Fonseca on the 1:42 mark, not being able to recover from the blow, Fonseca’s corner called the fight giving Ballard a victory via TKO.

“I felt good in the ring,” said D’Mitrius Ballard. “I felt confident in the ring and made sure to have patience. It paid off and now I am ready for the next fight. I’m ready to get back into the ring ASAP.”

Eddie Gomez vs. John Karl Sosa was a 10-round welterweight fight for the vacant IBF North American Welterweight Title presented by Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Cerveza Tecate, BORN BOLD. The Boxeo Estelar broadcast aired live on Estrella TV at 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT. The card also streamed live on EstrellaTV.com and on YouTube via Fenomeno Studios. Ontario, California (May 20, 2016) – This Friday night at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, California, undefeated welterweight and 2012 Olympic Bronze medal winner, Taras “Real Deal” Shelestyuk, will be back in action as he takes on Erick Martinez in a 10-round bout for the vacant WBA International title.

At Thursday’s weigh in, Shelestyuk was 147 pounds and Martinez was 145.7.

Shelestyuk of Ukraine has a record of 13-0 with eight knockouts and is coming off a 10-round unanimous decision over Aslanbek Kozaev on November 6 in a nationally televised bout on ShoBox: The New Generation.

With that win, Shelestyuk cracked the world rankings, as he is settled in at number-11 by the WBO.

“Taras has become a fan favorite at the Doubletree Ontario,” said Ken Thompson, President and Founder of Thompson Boxing. “He has a unique blend of power and style, and boxing fans respond to that. After three year absence, Chuck Mussachio returns in in rematch against Willis Lockett, Next Friday night at the Claridge in Atlantic City

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (May 3-, 2016)–On Friday night, May 27th, a big night of boxing will kick off a holiday weekend at The Claridge in Atlantic City as Rising Promotions will present a terrific card of boxing.

In the main event, It will be about New Jersey bragging rights as Isiah Seldon will take on Eddie Edmond in a bout scheduled for six-rounds.

In a six-round co-feature, one of the most popular fighter’s from the shore area, Light Heavyweight Chuck Mussachio will be back in the ring after a 39-month lay off when he takes on Willis Lockett in a rematch of a bout that that ended in a draw on September 19, 2008.

Mussachio of Wildwood, New Jersey has a record of 18-3-2 with five knockouts and will be looking to get back to winning ways that made him a contender.

He will be marking his ring return in a familiar town where he has performed 17 times.

“Everything is going well. I am back in the swing of things and getting good sparring three days a week,” said Mussachio. “I started getting the itch again when I was helping Isiah Seldon ready for his fight in March. I am not worried about the layoff. I got that ring rust off in February. That wore off quickly and that motivated me to get back in the room quickly. I have been in the gym the whole time, sparring. I was in Bernard Hopkins last two camps, so I have been in good shape this whole time.”

Lockett of Takoma Park, Maryland has a record of 14-16-5 with five knockouts.

His record does not tell the story as Lockett has faced the “Whose-Who” of fighters between Super Middleweight and Heavyweight.

He has quality wins over Tyrone Tate (5-1), Calvin Riley (1-0), Willie Williams (6-1), former world title challenger Larry Marks, Joe McCreedy (10-2-1) & John Lennox (13-3). The winner of Lennox was part of Rising Promotions maiden card on December 5, 2015.

Lockett has faced eight undefeated fighters. Lockett will look to break a two-fight losing streak. In his last bout, Lockett was disqualified against Jordan Shimmell (19-1) on February 27 in Washington, DC.

“When we fought before,” said Mussachio, “I won that fight. I can’t believe they ruled that a draw. I have something to prove, because I took every round in that fight. Looking back, I couldn’t even tell you how he is. He never hit me. I am just going to do what I did last time, but this time, I have to do more.”

Mussachio, who is a guidance counselor by day, isn’t just coming back for one fight. He wants to get back to the status that got him to a 17-1-2 record and came within seconds of becoming USBA Cruiserweight champion before getting stopped by Garrett Wilson in 2011.

“The goal is to take this as far as I can. I have my rhythm back. This is not just one fight. I want to get a big opportunity. I already have the record for that.”

“I feel rejuvenated. I haven’t took a pounding and I still have good legs.”

Mussachio would not have his comeback fight anywhere else and is impressed by the way Rising Boxing Promotions has handled business leading up to the fight.

“I don’t like fighting anywhere else but Atlantic City. This is my 2nd home and it means a lot. After all this time, the interest is still there for me and my fans are coming out. It is like the old days. I want to thank everyone for their continued support of my career which is now going on 12 years. Debbie and Thomas LaManna have been great with Rising Promotions. They are very professional and great to work with.”

In an eight-round Cruiserweight bout, Nick Kisner (16-2-1, 6 KO’s) of Baltimore, MD will take on Lamont Capers (5-8-2) of Hawley, PA.

In a 6-round Heavyweight bout, Fred Latham (9-0-1, 5 KO’s) of Pittsburgh, PA will fight Jon Bolden (8-10-1, 6 KO’s) of New York.

In four round bouts:

In a four round Welterweight bout, Adrian Wilson (0-2) of Atlantic City will take on pro debuting DaQuan Johnson of Pennsauken, New Jersey

Quian Davis (2-0-1, 1KO) of Mays Landing, NJ will fight Soloman Maye (1-6-1, 1 KO) of New Haven, CT in a Heavyweight out.

Lightweight Anthony Burgin (9-1, 2 KO’s) of Philadelphia will fight Curtis Morton (4-5-3) of Harlem, NY.

Also on the card will be the pro debut of Bantamweight Leroy Davila of New Brunswick, New Jersey battling fellow pro debuter Dominic Whitehurst of Chillicothe, OH.

Davila, who had over 60 amateur fights was ranked second in the United States in his weight class.

Lawrence Newton (3-0, 3 KO’s) of Florida battles Julio Crespo (0-1) of Puerto Rico in a Bantamweight bout

Guivas Taking a Realistic Approach to Facing ‘Big Baby’ Miller in CBS-televised Showdown next Friday at Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino

Topeka, Kansas heavyweight Nick “Two Gunz” Guivas is taking a realistic approach to facing one of the most dangerous up-and-coming heavyweights in the world next weekend.

Guivas (12-3-2, 9 KOs) will take on undefeated WBO #11, WBA #12 and IBF #15 Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller (16-0-1, 14 KOs) for the WBO NABO Heavyweight Championship on Friday, May 27, 2016, at the Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino in Niagara Falls, New York.

The two power-punching heavies will meet in the main event of Greg Cohen Promotions’ (in association with Salita Promotions, Adam Wilcock’s FightCard Promotions and David Schuster’s Winner Take All Productions) next instalment of “Championship Boxing on CBS Sports Network.”

In the 10-round lightweight semi-final bout, red-hot Filipino prospect Harmonito “El Huracan de Gensan” Dela Torre (17-0, 12 KOs) will make his debut on US soil against capable veteran Guillermo Sanchez (15-18-1, 6 KOs) of Buffalo.

Tickets for “Championship Boxing on CBS Sports Network” start at $35 and are available at the Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino box office, www.ticketmaster.com or you can charge by phone at 1-800-745-3000.

“I’m coming there to win, definitely,” said Guivas, “and I know I’m a lot smaller than him, but I think I can move around and stay away from his punches. He’s a very heavy hitter, so I’m going to move and box him and see what the outcome is. I’m going to give this guy everything I’ve got. And I know he’s coming to fight too, so at the end of the fight, may the best man get their hand raised.”

Taking on the red-hot Miller is not a job many heavyweights are hoping to get at the moment, but Guivas says the time is right for a challenge of this magnitude.

“I’m at the part of my career where I need to step up,” he explained. “When they offered me the fight, I was already somewhat in shape, so I said let’s get in better shape and see what we can do. I think at this time I’m ready for it.”

Guivas says he respects Miller’s power, but might have some openings to get a few things done. “Over the years, I’ve gotten smarter in the ring. I know the guy is a heavy puncher and had a really good amateur career. He’s got a good jab, but he doesn’t have super fast hands. I’ve also noticed he tends to wear down in the later rounds, so I have to take him deep and see if I can out-box him.”

A service technician for Coca Cola during the day, Guivas stared boxing and had his first fight at age eight. He ultimately had around 200 amateur fights and was a two-time silver gloves medalist, won the regional Golden Gloves tournament twice and went to the PAL Nationals. He got the nickname “Two Gunz” from promoter Damon Reed.

“My promoter, Damon, is my promoter and a fighter too. He gave me that name because of the size of my arms and because I hit him one time and he said he felt like he’d been shot with a gun.”

Guivas says he’s working hard at the Danger Fire Gym in Topeka, before and after work every day, and doing things a bit different to prepare for Miller.

“I get up early in the morning and get my run in and then in evenings after work I do my boxing and sparring. I end up doing four to five hours a day of training. I have no choice, but to do it like that. In the past, I’ve had one or two sparring partners for a fight, and I would go five or six rounds with that guy. For this fight, we brought in five guys and I get a fresh one every round. And the guys I’m sparring with are guys that are at the next level or getting ready to become top fighters. I’m getting a fresh look from different guys every round.”

A good counterpuncher and a decent boxer, Guivas says a victory next Friday would change everything.

“I think beating Miller would definitely put me to the next level. The guy is top 10. If I can get the win I’d be in the money next time. I don’t fight just for the money though. I love to fight. That’s what I do.”

On fight night, doors open at 6 pm and the action starts at 7:00 pm. The Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino is located at 310 4th Street in Niagara Falls, NY. For more information, call 877-873-6322 or visit www.senecaniagaracasino.com.

LIAM SMITH SHARES HIS THOUGHTS ON SATURDAY’S WORLD TITLE TRIPLE HEADER

Liverpool’s WBO Super-Welterweight World Champion Liam Smith will be keeping a very close eye on this Saturday’s Super-Welterweight world title triple header in Las Vegas, aired exclusively on the Channel of Champions BoxNation.

In the main event Erislandy Lara defends his WBA title against Vanes Martirosyan in a rematch of their 2012 bout that ended in a technical draw. Brothers Jermall and Jermell Charlo will look to make history in co-featured bouts as the first twins to hold world title’s in the same division. Unbeaten Jermall makes the second defence of his belt against former world champion Austin Trout while Jermell takes on exciting contender John Jackson for the Vacant WBC belt.

27 year-old Smith, who holds a record of 22 wins unbeaten with 12 KO’s, harbours dreams of unifying the 154 pound division with WBA Champion Lara and IBF titleholder Charlo on his list of future targets. Merseyside maverick Smith makes the third defence of his world title against Predrag Radosevic on June 4. ‘Beefy’ took time out of his training camp to share his thoughts on this weekend’s action.

Jermall Charlo vs. Austin Trout
“I’m looking forward to the three fights and I’m made up BoxNation captured them. I think the Charlo vs. Trout fight is probably the most interesting one out of the three. Trout’s a good fighter and a former world champion himself. To be honest I’d love to take on the winner of that fight. There was talk of me and Trout as my mandatory and it’s a fight that could definitely still be made if he wins. I pick Charlo to win on points in a close fight.”

Jermell Charlo vs. John Jackson
“The other Charlo brother against Jackson is another great fight. I can see Charlo stopping Jackson late on in round ten. Jackson isn’t a bad fighter, people over here only really know about him because of the Andy Lee fight which on paper he lost via knockout. If you actually watched the fight he was beating Lee in every round and was on the verge of finishing Lee until he pulled that shot out of the bag. He’s not a bad fighter but I pick Charlo to beat him.”

Erislandy Lara vs. Vanes Martirosyan
“The outcome of this fight all depends on which Lara turns up. They had a close fight before where they had a technical draw. Lara is a very talented boxer but not many people want to watch him and he’s taken a lot of stick recently. He won on points in a boring fight against Delvin Rodriguez who Miguel Cotto stopped and blew out in three rounds. He’ll be trying to prove a point and be more exciting. If he brings that style then it’ll allow Martirosyna into the fight.”

Tickets for Smith’s huge homecoming are priced £40 and £60 and are available from:

They’ll be meeting each other at the featherweight division to fight for the NABA title.

Lastly, I want to thank the sponsors that are involved in this great event Cerveza Tectate, BORN BOLD, Casa Mexico Tequila, and Hands of Stone: The True Story of Roberto Duran in theaters August.

And now let’s get to the fighters. First up is team Salido. I want to introduce a good friend and the person who was very instrumental in helping make this fight. He’s the manager for Orlando Salido and that’s Mr. Sean Gibbons. Sean?

Sean Gibbons: Yes, thank you, Eric. We’re just here right now in Ciudad Obregon, Mexico, Orlando’s hometown, where we’ve been training for the last about 45 days. Everything’s going perfect. We’re very happy with the way everything is right now.

Eric Gomez: Great. Thank you, Sean. Thank you very much. Now if we can get a few comments from his trainer, his longtime trainer, Santos Moreno, who’s done a great job with Salido and he’s been there for all the title fights. Santos, can you please make a few comments in how everything is, training?

Santos Moreno: [Speaking Spanish].

Eric Gomez: Yes, in Spanish.

Santos Moreno: [Speaking Spanish].

Ricardo Jimenez (Interpreting): Yes, Moreno, we are working very hard getting ready for this fight. We’re trained to win this fight and that’s what we’re working on, almost done here to close it out in just one more week. We’ll work real hard, and then be ready to go.

Eric Gomez: Thank you very much. Gracias, Santos, mucho gracias. Okay, so now.

Santos Moreno: [Speaking Spanish].

Eric Gomez: Gracias. So now he’s no stranger to thrilling wars, Orlando ‘Siri’ Salido is a three-time former world champion. He’s been a professional since 1996. He’s fought some of the best fighters in our era including Juan Manuel Marquez, Robert Guerrero, Yuriokis Gamboa, Mikey Garcia, Vasyl Lomachenko; but he’s probably best known for his two fight series with Juan Manuel Lopez and Rocky Martinez. And obviously on June 4th, Salido’s looking to become a champion once again, and when he faces ‘Bandido’ Vargas.

If I can have Orlando Salido say a few words, please.

Orlando Salido: [Speaking Spanish].

Ricardo Jimenez (Interpreting): Yes, I’m happy to have this opportunity working with real hard. I know it’s going to be a real tough fight. I’m looking forward to it to give our fans a great fight. I’ll be really looking to get the upset win here over Vargas.

Eric Gomez: Great. Thank you, Ricardo. Gracious, Orlando. [Speaking Spanish]. Okay, now let me introduce real quick, team Vargas. He’s headed by his manager, Ralph Heredia, who’s done a great job with him for the last year or so.

And Ralph, if you can please say a few words about this fight and about your fighter.

Ralph Heredia: Thank you. Good morning and good afternoon to everybody. I just wanted everybody to know that we’re very excited. We have located camp in California now. Everything is going well. We had three tests and they all came back negative, so we’re very excited about that and we know that this fight is right around the corner.

I believe, not only as a manager, but as a fan, like Eric mentioned is definitely going to be a candidate for fighter of the year. We respect Salido. We know he’s a tough veteran warrior that has the experience and you cannot underestimate his heart. So excited and can’t wait for June 4th.

Eric Gomez: Great. Thank you very much. Thank you for the nice words, Ralph. Now, to his fighter, he’s a member of the 2008 Mexican Olympic Team, Francisco ‘El Bandido’ Vargas has continued to represent his country as a professional. He struck gold in 2015 by winning the WBC Super Featherweight World Title and was considered by most the writers the fight of the year.

He’s a former NABF and WBO International Super Featherweight Champion. And at 31 years old, he’s pretty much on top of the division. His biggest win, again, came last year against Takashi Miura. If I can have him say a few words with a great record of 23-0, 1 draw, 17 knockouts, Francisco ‘El Bandido’ Vargas. Francisco.

Francisco Vargas: [Speaking Spanish].

Ralph Heredia (Interpreting): Good morning and good afternoon to everybody. I’m very excited. I know that June 4th is right around the corner and I know that I’ve done everything to prepare for this veteran, this great ex-champion. And the winners from this fight will be the fans. They’re going to get a very exciting fight.

Eric Gomez: That’s great. Thank you. Thank you very much. Gracias, Francisco. Okay, so now, Ellen, let’s open it up to questions.

Operator: Thank you. We will now begin the question and answer session. If you have a question, please press star then one on your touchtone phone. If you wish to be removed from the queue, please press the pound sign or hash key. If you are using a speakerphone, you may need to pick up the handset first before pressing the numbers. Once again, for any questions press star then one.

Our first question is from Dan Rafael with ESPN.

Dan Rafael: Thank you very much. Hello, everybody. Eric, could you ask Francisco when he won the title against Miura in what was the 2015 fight of the year for most people, he comes back and he takes on a fight that most people are going to think is going to be another knockdown, drag out, kind of brawl. I want to know from Francisco, why this fight in his first defense and does he expect the same kind of fight, also, Eric, that many of us expect?

Eric Gomez: Okay. Okay, I’ll ask him the question, then Ralph, you can translate. [Speaking Spanish].

Francisco Vargas: [Speaking Spanish].

Ralph Heredia (Interpreting): I had always said I want to fight the best and I consider Salido one of the best. And I believe that both of our styles match very good in the ring and is going to make a very exciting fight and that’s the reason I’m excited. And I want to continue to be the best; in order to be the best, you have to fight the best, and I consider him one of the best. And I know that it definitely could be a candidate for fight of the year.

Dan Rafael: All right, Eric, could you—thank you for that, Ralph—could you also ask Francisco, obviously we’ve heard and written about what happened with his drug test from Mexico, can he address that and talk about when he came back to California? I think you said in the introduction that since his return to California, where he’s been tested by VADA three times, is that correct? And how much of a distraction has that been having the additional testing since what happened occurred?

Eric Gomez: I think it might’ve been more by now; it might’ve been four or five times by now. Ralph can answer that as far as the testing. But let me ask him. [Speaking Spanish].

Francisco Vargas: [Speaking Spanish].

Ralph Heredia (Interpreting): First of all, I have always been a clean fighter. I’m going to continue to be a clean fighter.

Ralph Heredia: We’re the ones that requested the testing and here are some facts, Dan Rafael. Francisco Vargas was tested in California on April 15th, no, I’m sorry, before that. Yes, I’m sorry, he was tested on April 15th in California. Tests came back negative. He goes to Mexico City on April 16th.

His mom makes one of his favorite dishes, which is carne asada with bone and it’s made in broth. He has dinner on Wednesday and there’s leftovers and he eats them Thursday. Thursday evening, VADA knocks on his door; he gets tested. Okay, and that was on the, I believe it was on the 21st—five days later. That test came back positive for clenbuterol. But here’s the thing. I want you to focus on this, Dan Rafael, on the doses, as far as how much he tested it, because I did my own research with Victor Conte, that I believe is one of [indiscernible] and I just wanted to get his input.

He tested back for clenbuterol 1.3. What does that translate? I was not educated to know. He told me that most laboratories do not even test for anything under 0.20. He was very surprised that VADA picked up 1.3. When I had a conversation with Victor I asked him, “If you have a dirty athlete, within that grace period, what should he test?” He says, “Ralph, any individual that tries to do something deliberate, once he will test 50, 5, 0.” So he replied and he said that basically the dosage that Francisco showed had to be some contaminated food, which was the meat.

Since then, Dan Rafael, Francisco was tested in Mexico three times right after that. All three times it came back negative for clenbuterol. Since then he has been tested in California two more times, okay, and those tests we’re still waiting for the results because he was tested Sunday morning and Monday afternoon. But rest assured, if he was dirty and doing something deliberate, not only would’ve the doses been much higher, but he would’ve tested positive on the first test when he was in California, which was the 15th.

Also, something that Francisco mentioned, and I was in the same boat as he was, I used to hear these stories; never believed it. Never. But like Francisco said, you don’t believe it til it happens to you. And believe me when I tell you, these are facts. I’m glad that it happened because I believe this is not only going to help Francisco, but it’s going to help a lot of athletes that are clean. And hopefully the technology will be there or that it can distinguish when somebody does something deliberate—

Dan Rafael: So, Ralph, part of the question that I had for him, I’m not sure if there was an answer there, was just—and by the way, I happen to believe what you guys say. Most of the time I’m thinking a guy that gets tested positive is dirty. In this particular instance because of the many, many factors, I happen to believe you guys. So my question to you is how much of a distraction has it been, both going through that situation, having it come out, going to deal with the Commission to get special permission to still have this fight still not get taken down, and then to have to undergo additional testing than you would normally have to go? Has it been a distraction? Can you ask Francisco to answer that?

Ralph Heredia: You know what, I’m sorry, Dan. He did answer that when Eric asked him the question. He said, “No.” He said, “He is willing to do to anything, any test. You can test me every hour on the hour. It doesn’t bother me. Why? Because I’m clean and I have nothing to hide.” So to answer your question, there has been no distraction because he knows that he’s clean and he wants the opponent to be clean, also. He wants a clean sport. That’s why we’re doing this.

Dan Rafael: All right. That’s great. Thank you very much for that, guys. I have a couple of questions for Orlando.

Ricardo, if you’re translating, I’d appreciate that. My question, one question for Orlando is he has had three fights and he’s had a whole bunch of significant, very action-packed, hard, tough fights, but in specific he’s coming off three in a row against the Thailand fighter with multiple knockdowns and then the two wars with Rocky Martinez. I’m wondering from Orlando, here he goes again, another fight that most people expect to be that kind of fight. What is it about Orlando Salido that keeps putting him in these unbelievable fights and how excited or concerned is he that this is going to be another one of these kinds of wars?

Ricardo Jimenez: [Speaking Spanish].

Orlando Salido: [Speaking Spanish].

Ricardo Jimenez (Interpreting): He says, no, I’ve never been a protected fighter. I have to take the fights that are offered to me, but it’s very exciting to me. I like those kinds of fights. I love going in there and fighting those kinds of fights. It’s what I like to do. And yeah, I’m very excited about this type of fight because I think it’ll be just like the other ones.

Dan Rafael: Ricardo, I think about this fight on paper, I think about Coralis Costello, I can’t help it. Does he have any opinion about that? Does he think—?

Ricardo Jimenez: [Speaking Spanish].

Orlando Salido: [Speaking Spanish].

Ricardo Jimenez (Interpreting): I think so. I think if you go in there it might be even better. It think our styles are made perfect for each other. I think we’re going to go in there from minute one and just start throwing punches. There’s not going to be any speculation out there. There’s going to be a lot of entertainment for the fans.

Dan Rafael: And just one other question for him, can you ask him if he heard what Francisco Vargas and Ralph were saying as related to the positive clenbuterol test? What is his opinion about that and does he think that his opponent is a dirty fighter or does he believe the situation that they claim that it’s a contaminated meat, that the dosage that was found was extremely low? What’s his perspective on the guy that’s got to get in the ring and fight the guy that had a bad test?

Ricardo Jimenez: [Speaking Spanish].

Orlando Salido: [Speaking Spanish].

Ricardo Jimenez (Interpreting): You know, it’s not really my concern. That’s why we have a Commission. That’s why we test them, what they do, what they need to do. All I know is getting ready for the fight, tell me the fight is on, then I’m getting ready, and I’m going to fight him. You know, it doesn’t matter to me. That’s why we have a Commission that takes care of this.

Dan Rafael: All right. Great. Thank you very much, everybody. I appreciate your time. And I look forward to seeing you guys in a couple of weeks. Thank you.

Operator: The next question is from Lance Pugmire with Los Angeles Times.

Lance Pugmire: Okay, Orlando, just following up on that real quick. I know what you’re saying that there’s Commission in place to deal with this, but you had your own issue in the past and you paid a pretty serious penalty for that. Do you think that justice has truly been served here given that in baseball, in the NFL, in the Olympics, a positive test like this would result in a very lengthy suspension for the athlete?

Ricardo Jimenez: [Speaking Spanish].

Orlando Salido: [Speaking Spanish].

Ricardo Jimenez (Interpreting): You know, the only thing I have to say, or anymore that I have to say about this is if it would’ve been me that it would’ve come up positive, you know, the fight would’ve been cancelled and it would’ve been all over. It would’ve been done. It would’ve been done with. You know? Is that justice, I don’t know. I’m just telling you that that’s all I got to say about that.

Orlando Salido: [Speaking Spanish].

Ricardo Jimenez (Interpreting): They would’ve never have given me an opportunity to prove otherwise.

Lance Pugmire: Right. Francisco, from your standpoint, what do you think sports fans’ view of this is? Obviously in the other sport, it can result in a very lengthy suspension. Do you think the fans look at this like, that’s just boxing or do you think—what exactly is your opinion of how this positive test was treated in this sport?

Ralph Heredia: [Speaking Spanish].

Francisco Vargas: [Speaking Spanish].

Ralph Heredia: Let’s look at some facts here, Lance. Facts. First of all, he tested positive for clenbuterol. Okay? And for those individuals who don’t know clenbuterol, look into it, clenbuterol was a drug that was used back in the days for body builders to lose weight. This gentleman did not have to lose weight. Unfortunately in Mexico they use that for cattle. Why? I don’t know. I don’t know if you have read, but last year they tested 200 slaughter houses, 58 were tested positive.

Also let’s look at some facts here. The doses were very low of clenbuterol. I believe the other gentleman that got fined was tested positive for testosterone and they can distinguish synthetic testosterone or real testosterone. What does that mean? If your body produces natural testosterone, it doesn’t matter how high it is. Now they have the technology where they can distinguish with synthetics.

Francisco did not test positive for testosterone; that’s why the fight is still continuing and that’s why we’re still here. Now if it would’ve been testosterone like Nebido, which that other gentleman tested positive for, the fight would’ve definitely been cancelled. You’re comparing apples to oranges, okay. Testosterone and clenbuterol are two different things, my man. So just because some writers happen to put steroids, it is not a steroid. It’s to lose weight.

This gentleman, I don’t know if you know this or not, but he weighed 140, 30 days out, okay. He don’t have a weight problem and if you’re going to use that, you’re going to use that as the fight gets closer. What does that mean? Seven to ten days prior to the fight, not six or seven weeks to the fight, okay. So facts are facts. Clenbuterol is not a testosterone. The dosage was 1.3, okay. The other gentleman, Nebido. Look it up. It’s testosterone. It’s a steroid. Simple as that and is a fact.

Lance Pugmire: Yes, I understand that, Ralph, but there’s also the contention out there that clenbuterol can be used for weight cutting measures early in camp if a fighter is experiencing any kind of weight issues. And additionally—

Ralph Heredia: One point three?

Lance Pugmire: We know. Listen, there’s also examples of micro dosing that are used in performance enhancing drug use. So both of those issues, obviously the California Commission said it’s probably okay to proceed with the fight, but both of those issues could also be a play if you’re going to be completely skeptical of this test.

Ralph Heredia: Well listen, I’m not going to argue with you. I’m not going to argue with you on that.

Sean Gibbons: They used this in race horses in Mexico. It’s used to open up the breathing and have more strength for your conditioning, not just for cutting weight. It absolutely does give you a benefit if he was using them; we’re not saying that he was, maybe it was tainted meat, maybe someone Ralph didn’t even know someone and gave him a supplement, someone gave him something.

So if this happened 7-10 days out from the fight, we would have serious issues about going forward with the fight, but thank god it happened when it happened. So now we feel it was caught far enough out by VADA that we feel we’re going to go with their reasoning and their mistake; same issues we had years and years ago, but we didn’t get the benefit that he’s getting because of the different tests and stuff. But it definitely is used as a performance enhancing if they’ve used it in horses here, for the breathing, for the opening up of lungs; it definitely helps you.

So it’s not something to tread lightly like he just happened to be . It’s a very serious thing. We’re not taking it lightly, but we feel it was caught far enough out that whatever way it got into his system that it won’t enhance his performance now. So that’s all we want to say, but we’re taking it very seriously. We’re not taking this lightly.

And we appreciate Ralph studying and Ralph going into it. Because like Ralph, I did this in 1997 with Guerrero. I called all the doctors, I called the people, I presented the case in Nevada; $25,000 later, you’re a steroid user, you used nandrolone. Nandrolone’s a naturally producing in your body already. Our levels were elevated a bit. We passed another test two days later, but Nevada wanted to hear nothing about it. So we understand exactly what Ralph’s saying because we made this same speech to people, but nobody would listen to us back in the day. We’re branded as steroid users. So that’s it. But it’s very serious. I’m glad VADA—it happened when it happened.

Ralph Heredia: We’re good. We’re good. Sean, I’d like to talk to you outside the conference call, but just remember the dosages. This is a conference call and I don’t want to take too much time from the media, but I respect you, Sean, and I’d like to talk to you—

Sean Gibbons: We don’t want to waste any more time on this. We’re here to fight. Orlando’s here to fight. He’s not worried about no clenbuterol, whatever. He’s just here to fight. We’ll move past this and let’s just go have a great fight. We’re past this now.

Ralph Heredia: Thank you, Sean.

Sean Gibbons: You got it.

Operator: The next question is from Bernard Fernandez with SureDie.com.

Bernard Fernandez: Yeah. Well I’m going to take a break from the drug thing. Obviously Francisco won fighter of the year for the Miura fight last year from several media organizations, including the Boxing Writers Association of America. The dinner, the BW dinner will be in New York on June 24th. Does he anticipate going there and how much does it mean for him to get that recognition?

Ralph Heredia: Excuse me, did you say the dinner was June 24th?

Bernard Fernandez: That’s correct.

Ralph Heredia: Okay. [Speaking Spanish].

Francisco Vargas: [Speaking Spanish].

Ralph Heredia (Interpreting): You know I’m honored and excited, and they finally got to see and recognize my hard work, and of course if I’m in invited, I’m definitely going to be there, without a doubt.

Bernard Fernandez: Okay, and I’m looking at the list of past winners or the past participants and fighters of the year, it’s heavily dotted with Mexican fighters, Marco Antonio Barrera, and Mexican-American fighters, Erik Morales, Jose Luis Castillo, Rafael Marquez, Manuel Marquez. Yes, what is it about—there’s a great pride factor with Mexican fighters. And I’ll ask both fighters here, what is it that makes Mexican fighters almost like a special breed that they’re all considered to be such great warriors?

Ralph Heredia: [Speaking Spanish].

Francisco Vargas: [Speaking Spanish].

Ralph Heredia (Interpreting): Well the reason for that is because we give it all we got. Not only do we give everything in training, but when it’s fight time, we fight with our heart, we give it everything that we have, and I believe that that will make the Latinos, and especially the Mexican fighters, special that they give it all, whether you’re going to die or not, you give it all you got. The only thing that matters is win, win, win because you want to win and no cost, and you don’t hold nothing back, and I believe that’s what makes us the warriors that we are and the champions because we don’t settle for nothing less but give it all we got.

Bernard Fernandez: All right. Thank you.

Ricardo Jimenez: Orlando [Speaking Spanish]. Orlando? Orlando?

Orlando Salido: [Speaking Spanish].

Ricardo Jimenez (Interpreting): You know, we is warriors. We go in there and give it our all, fight with our with all our might, and you know what happens, win or lose, you know, you’re going, we just give it our all. We’re just going to give it everything we have each and every time we get into the ring.

Bernard Fernandez: Thank you, also.

Operator: The next question is from Mitch Abramson with RingTV.com.

Mitch Abramson: Thanks. My question is for Sean. Hey, Sean, are you there?

Sean Gibbons: Yeah, I’m here.

Mitch Abramson: Sean, was there any thought about pulling out of this fight once you became aware of the positive drug test for Francisco?

Sean Gibbons: No, I mean, first of all I ran it all by Orlando, Orlando’s fighting, I’m not; I’m not the guy getting hit in the head. So no, we felt that, again, like I said earlier, it all came up far enough out that if it was something going on, you know, it’ll be out of his system. It won’t give Vargas any more stuff like it would the week of the fight or something. If you come across something the week of the fight, and something was being used, that could’ve caused a big problem, but everything happened far enough out that Orlando wanted to go through with the fight.

I left it all up to Orlando, he’s the one putting his life on the line, he’s the one that gets in the ring, he’s the one taking the punches, so he feels comfortable with where everything was at.

Mitch Abramson: Were you guys given any kind of compensation from the Vargas camp to go ahead with the bout?

Ricardo Jimenez: Repeat the question, please.

Mitch Abramson: Did you guys work out any kind of deal regarding compensation on going ahead with the bout, not pulling out?

Eric Gomez: No not at all. No, Mitch, not at all. Everything’s fine. We have a contract. We discussed it like gentlemen, and Sean and his team were good, our team was good, so we’re good. Everything’s been good, and there’s a great explanation for it and everything’s fine now.

Mitch Abramson: Okay, thanks, Eric. And then I have a question for Francisco, just that if he was aware of the problem with meat in Mexico before he had his mom’s stew, and if that thought had crossed his mind before he began to eat the meat there? Can you just ask him if he was aware of that issue with the contaminated meat in Mexico beforehand?

Ralph Heredia: [Speaking Spanish].

Francisco Vargas: [Speaking Spanish].

Ralph Heredia (Interpreting): He said, well, l first of all, why the hell would I eat the meat if I had knowledge it was contaminated. I challenge everybody that’s listening to this conference call to eat some meat that’s contaminated and test the next day, see what the doses will be, and he guarantee you, you will test positive for clenbuterol. But of course I didn’t know, I would’ve never ate that if I would’ve known. Never.

Mitch Abramson: No, the question was whether he was aware of the problem in Mexico regarding contaminated meat, and if he was aware of the problem, why he chose to eat his mother’s stew if he was aware of the problem. That was my question.

Ralph Heredia: [Speaking Spanish].

Francisco Vargas: [Speaking Spanish].

Ralph Heredia (Interpreting): He said, I have heard of it through the news but I never believed it. I thought that they were lying and they were dirty, but once it happened to me, now I believe it.

Mitch Abramson: And there’s one last question for Francisco, is he afraid that this might follow him for the rest of his career or did he think it’s just a one-off and that after this situation, he’ll be able to move on without having to deal with people whispering that he’s not a clean fighter?

Ralph Heredia: [Speaking Spanish].

Francisco Vargas: [Speaking Spanish].

Ralph Heredia (Interpreting): No I’m not worried or concerned because I had always been a clean fighter. I had always been tested, came out clean, and I continue to be tested, and I’m still coming out clean, so no. Once I found out what the problem was, my diet consists of nothing but fish, soup, and vegetables, and that proves that it was the meat. So no, it does not worry me at all. I’m a clean fighter.

Mitch Abramson: Okay, thanks for that. Good luck in the fight.

Operator: The next question is from Rigo Cervantez with ESPN Digital.

Rigo Cervantez: Hello. [Speaking Spanish].

Ricardo Jimenez: The question is with all the experience that you had fighting all those great fighters all of your career, do you think that’s going to be a fact that you’ve experienced a new level of opponent?

Ricardo Jimenez: [Speaking Spanish].

Orlando Salido: [Speaking Spanish].

Ricardo Jimenez (Interpreting): No I don’t know if it’ll be an advantage or not, my experience or not, I’m just getting ready for the fight. The advantage will be the preparation to getting ready. I know I’ve got a very tough fight in front of me, I know I’m fighting the guy that’s going to come to fight me at every moment, and I think the fans are going to be the winners here because it will be a great fight.

Operator: The next question is from Jake Donovan with BoxingScene.com.

Jake Donovan: Yeah, my first question is for Francisco. He kind of touched on this earlier where he has changed his diet for this fight. I just want to know if he’s going to permanently change his diet moving forward because he said it was his favorite meal and that’s what led to the positive drug test. But what happens if he happens to eat that, then the next day he gets a big fight, and two days later he gets tested by VADA?

M: Okay, excuse me, you kind of broke up. Sorry about that, did you say that—

Jake Donovan: I just want to know if he’s going to change his diet permanently moving forward. Now especially being aware of the contaminated meat [indiscernible] that’s plaguing Mexico. If he’s going to change his diet moving forward?

Ralph Heredia: [Speaking Spanish].

Francisco Vargas: [Speaking Spanish].

Ralph Heredia (Interpreting): He said, basically, absolutely I’m going to change my diet after going through this experience, and I’m going to continue to be a clean fighter. I love the VADA program. I believe that being the clean fight and I want to continue being tested. But of course I love meat, but if it’s going to result in the positive test, damn right I’m going to change my diet, absolutely. And if you can see once I’ve changed my diet and Mexico and I’ve changed my diet, you see how I came out clean and that was the only one that came up dirty with the meat, so absolutely, I will not touch meat while I’m in Mexico and I’m clean.

Jake Donovan: Okay, great, thank you very much .

Sean Gibbons: Jake, Salido wanted to make sure that’s Mexico City. Signora, [ph] the beef is the best. Signora, get that [indiscernible] no problem. Mexico City—

Ricardo Jimenez: I may have to get some reporters [ph], Sean.

Sean Gibbons: [Indiscernible] from Mexico.

Jake Donovan: Sorry, and then on Eric—okay, Eric, you still on the phone?

Eric Gomez: Yes, I’m here.

Jake Donovan: Hey, Eric, I just wanted to know from your perspective, and I think you’ve handled this situation great, especially during the commission hearing, but from a promotional standpoint, I just want to know how that changed on your end because going in this was like, I can’t miss of the year, that’s all anyone cared about. Then this drug test came about, and you guys moved past it, but how did you guys change up on the promotional front?

Eric Gomez: Obviously when you have such a great fight like this fight, and most of you guys in the media and most of the fans are calling it, potential fight of the year, you don’t want any bad publicity, you don’t want any hiccups, no speed bumps; unfortunately, it happened. We have experience with this Golden Boy Promotions, myself in particular, because it happened to us when we did the Danny Garcia fight with Erik Morales and he tested positive for the same thing. And it was consistent with what happened to Erik Morales. He was clean, he ended up coming down from the mountain in Mexico City, he ate somewhere in Mexico City, and then that’s when he tested positive. He had been clean before that.

So we had some experience with it, we had done research, and the good thing is that I’m dealing with professionals. Sean Gibbons is a professional and he’s been around, he’s got experience, and he went through the same thing and he knew about it and he did his own research. So when I talk to those—two professionals talking to each other, so he knew what it was all about. That’s the reason why we didn’t lose the fight, that’s the reason why there’s no real damage done. It was a mistake and that’s it, and we’ve got him past it, and I think it’s going to be a terrific fight. Both fighters are going to be at 100%, and you guys are going to be in for a treat. It’s going to be an early 4th of July treat.

Jake Donovan: Well my birthday’s two days before, so I’ll consider it a belated birthday present. Thank you very much, Eric, and best of luck to, everyone, on June 4th.

Eric Gomez: Thank you.

Jake Donovan: All right.

Operator: The next question is from Gayle Falkenthal with Communities Digital.

Gayle Falkenthal: Good morning, gentlemen. This is not a drug testing question, this is a question about the rise of the lower weight classes getting a lot more attention than they have in several years, but there are still a lot of fans, especially in the United States, that are really focused, maybe obsessed, on the heavyweights, big guys. What would both of you, Orlando, and, Francisco, say to them about giving you guys a chance to entertain, and what they can expect from seeing action in the lower weight classes?

Ralph Heredia: I can go first. [Speaking Spanish].

Francisco Vargas: [Speaking Spanish].

Ralph Heredia (Interpreting): First of all thank you for asking a question related to boxing and not drugs because I’m a clean fighter. And to the question, I’m very, very excited; very excited. Why? Because know we’re [indiscernible] getting the attention. And we are very exciting fighters, not only do we throw more combinations, we interchange, and we just give it all we got, and I’m very honored that we’re getting the attention. And I believe that our weight class, and the lower weight classes, are very entertaining, and now the individuals and people in the United States are starting to realize it, so it makes me excited and happy and to give the fans more entertaining fights.

Gayle Falkenthal: Very good.

Ricardo Jimenez: [Speaking Spanish].

Orlando Salido: [Speaking Spanish].

Ricardo Jimenez (Interpreting): I think when you see the lower weights, you see guys movement, you see a lot of movement, you see a lot of punches; it is the more entertaining fight because that’s the way we fight, that’s the way we have to fight, and I think that gives the fans something more enjoyable to watch, and I think this lower divisions give you that, the entertainment value.

Gayle Falkenthal: Well I find the big guys slow, so I agree with you. I do have a follow-up question, unrelated. We have an Olympian among you, and there’s been a lot of discussion about allowing professionals back into the Olympics in boxing. What do you think about that, and if it was ever done, would you consider it?

Ralph Heredia: [Speaking Spanish].

Francisco Vargas: [Speaking Spanish].

Ralph Heredia (Interpreting): In my opinion I don’t think that’s a good idea. As you know I went to the Olympics in 2008, and to be honest with you I can’t see myself after fighting for a title for 12 rounds to becoming the world champion, I can’t see myself going back and fighting 3 rounds, and I just don’t think it’s right. I think we should give the amateurs the chance to compete, and I just don’t think it’s fair for a professional to compete with the kids that are coming up. And in my opinion I wouldn’t do it, I’ve been there, and I wouldn’t do it. I just don’t think it’s right for [indiscernible] trying to do what they’re doing as far as having professionals compete with amateurs. How are you going to have grown man compete with kids? It’s not fair in my opinion.

Gayle Falkenthal: Thank you. Good luck to both of you.

Ricardo Jimenez: [Speaking Spanish].

Orlando Salido: [Speaking Spanish].

Ricardo Jimenez (Interpreting): I think that you’re mixing different things together because allowing professionals and amateurs, and if you want a proof of that, look what happened to Lomachenko, the best amateur fighter when he fought me, a professional; it was a win for me. So I think that proves right there that it shouldn’t be mixed.

Operator: The next question is from Victor Garcia with RealCombatMedia.com.

Victor Garcia: [Speaking Spanish] Good afternoon. My first question is for Francisco. You fought an incredible and exciting fight with Miura back in November, but you also take a lot of punishment. Orlando is a strong and experienced come forward fighter who is also a two-time world champion, a former world champion. Do you plan on fighting the same way you fought Miura or are you coming in with a different game plan, perhaps maybe fighting him at a distance, boxing him a little bit more?

Ralph Heredia: [Speaking Spanish].

Francisco Vargas: [Speaking Spanish].

Ralph Heredia (Interpreting): First of all I’m honored to fight a great Mexico Warrior, like Orlando Salido. I respect him. I know he’s a hell of a fighter, and he’s going to bring it all, and I will be ready. And first of all, as far as how I’m going to fight, and what’s down, you’ll find out the night when I fight the night. You’ll see what kind of stuff. I’m not going to say nothing until that night, and you’ll see. You can know what kind of style I’m fighting that night.

Victor Garcia: Thank you. Next question is for Orlando. You’re coming off a draw with Martinez and in which a lot of people had you winning the fight. Knowing Vargas is the champion of the world, what are you going to do differently to try and secure the victory?

Ricardo Jimenez: [Speaking Spanish].

Orlando Salido: [Speaking Spanish].

Ricardo Jimenez (Interpreting): I know you have to be well prepared to fight; you have to be well prepared and that’s what I’m getting ready for a tough fight. And I’m just going to go in [indiscernible] throw a lot of punches up and down, you know everything it can do, and that’s what I’m—I need to pressure him, throw a lot of punches, and then see what happens with that.

Victor Garcia: Do you feel like you need a knockout to secure the victory or you think you can actually win the fight by points?

Ricardo Jimenez: [Speaking Spanish].

Orlando Salido: [Speaking Spanish].

Ricardo Jimenez (Interpreting): You know I’m just going out there throwing punches, win round-by-round. The knockout counts great, if we get it done that way, it would be excellent, but you know I’m just going to do my job then other people have to do theirs. They have to see what I did in the ring and then decide. I’m not going to go in there thinking that I need to get a knockout to win the fight; I’m just going to go in there to do the best that I can and let the results lay where they lay.

Victor Garcia: Okay, thank you. [Speaking Spanish].

Cecilia Zuniga: All right. Thank you, everyone, for joining us on this conference call today. This is Cecilia from Golden Boy. I’m going to introduce the fighters one more time for final comments. Francisco, [Speaking Spanish]. Hello?

Ralph Heredia: I’m sorry.

Cecilia Zuniga: Ralph?

Ralph Heredia: Yes.

Cecilia Zuniga: Ralph?

Ralph Heredia: Yes. [Speaking Spanish].

Cecilia Zuniga: Yes, for Francisco, if he has any final comments he wants to say to the press? We’re still on this call; we’re closing it up.

Ralph Heredia: [Speaking Spanish].

Francisco Vargas: [Speaking Spanish].

Ralph Heredia (Interpreting): Well the only thing I have to say is that on June 4th, there’s going to be a very, very exciting fight. I can’t wait, and I believe that the fans are going to get a very, very entertaining, action-packed fight, and I can’t wait for June 4th.

Cecilia Zuniga: Thank you, Francisco. Orlando, [Speaking Spanish].

Ricardo Jimenez: [Speaking Spanish].

Orlando Salido: [Speaking Spanish].

Ricardo Jimenez (Interpreting): I just want to let everyone know that to cancel everything: no weddings, no business, no Quinceanera, no nothing, just go watch this fight. You’re going to enjoy it, we’re going to give you a great, great fight, something you’re going to remember for a long, long time.

Cecilia Zuniga: Gracias, Orlando. Now I’ll turn it over to Eric Gomez to give any final comments in regards to the fight. Go ahead, Eric.

Eric Gomez: Thank you very much, Cecilia. Just I want to thank everybody, all the media that were on the call. It’s sure to be a great fight, no doubt about it. Many of you are predicting fight of the year, and I have to agree. Both fighters are champions, one is the current, the other wants to be the current, as well former three-time champion.

Tickets are still available, selling out fast. This is probably the best selling card we’ve had at StubHub for Golden Boy Promotions, so you don’t want to miss it, you want to be there. Tickets start at $25, you can go to the StubHub box office or you can go and purchase them on AXS.com or you can just call by phone. But again I hope to see every one of you there, and whoever gets there from the media, first round of [indiscernible] will be on Sean Gibbons, so make sure you’re there. Thanks.

Erislandy Lara, Vanes Martirosyan, Jermall Charlo, Austin Trout, Jermell Charlo & John Jackson Final Press Conference Quote

Erislandy Lara
LAS VEGAS (May 19, 2016) – The six elite 154-pound fighters competing on Saturday’s SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® tripleheader went face-to-face for the first time Thursday at the final press conference before they enter the ring live on SHOWTIME from The Chelsea inside The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

In attendance Thursday and headlining the event were WBA Super Welterweight World Champion Erislandy Lara and top contender Vanes Martirosyan. Televised coverage begins live on SHOWTIME at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT and features IBF Junior Middleweight World Champion Jermall Charlo taking on former champion Austin Trout plus undefeated challenger Jermell Charlo battling hard-hitting John Jackson for the vacant WBC Super Welterweight World Title.

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by Mayweather Promotions and TGB Promotions, are on sale now. Ticket prices start at $39, and are available online at www.cosmopolitanlasvegas.com or through Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000;www.ticketmaster.com.

Twin brothers Jermall and Jermell Charlo celebrated their 26th birthday Thursday and were celebrated with a cake at the final press conference that took place at Rose. Rabbit. Lie. at The Cosmopolitan. On Saturday they look to become the first twin brothers to hold world titles at the same time in the same weight class.

Here is what the fighters had to say Thursday:

ERISLANDY LARA

“I plan on going in there and getting into my zone and making the adjustments that will allow me to be victorious.

“One difference between this fight and our last fight is that I’m coming into this fight 100 percent healthy. I’m not making any excuses but I had a fractured knuckle going into our first fight. I still felt I was winning the fight. This time I’m not going to leave any doubt about who is the best.

“I have no pressure on me. I feel calm. Part of that comes with experience but I also know that I’m going to go in there and execute my game plan like I always do.

“I’m always stuck in controversial fights because of my fighting style.

“I’m excited to be sharing the stage with the Charlo brothers. We have trained together, so being part of this with them is great.

“Vanes’s a lot more passive than he was for the first fight. He was telling me I better be ready.

“I’m going to do what I have to do. Put my game plan together, put my punches together, I’m going to do everything that I have to do to be victorious on Saturday night.

On how he’s improved from the first fight…
“The fundamentals are always there. Every fighter gets better with every fight. You get a little bit more experience and that’s the difference.”

VANES MARTIROSYAN

“I’ve had a tremendous camp. I have a great team. I’ve had incredible sparring partners and I can’t wait for the real thing on Saturday.

“I’m in the best shape of my life and I’ve never been so ready. I don’t have to tell you what I’m going to do up here, because you’re going to see it on Saturday night. Actions speak louder than words. This is going to be the best Vanes you’ll ever see.

“This time around I am definitely going to be more aggressive. I cannot wait for Saturday.

“There is a different feeling for me in this fight than ever before. It’s for a world title, this is as big as it gets.

“It is the ‘Dream’ versus the ‘Nightmare,’ and you’ll definitely see the ‘Nightmare’ on Saturday night.

On what he saw in Lara’s eyes when they faced off…
“A fighter looking at another fighter. I see hunger in both eyes.

“A lot of the first fight, I was kind of inexperienced but we’ve matured a lot throughout the years. Four years into this game, a lot of experience, a lot of knowledge in the game so there’s a lot I learned from the first fight.

“The whole division is here, it’s awesome. They should do this more often and I’m happy that SHOWTIME put together such a great card.”

JERMALL CHARLO

“Every fight on this card could have been the main event. To be on a card like this with all these great fighters is exciting.

“Boxing has a lot of really big fights with the Charlos coming in the future. We’re going to take it one step at a time. This is a great fight that we have in front of us.

“I’m very proud of my brother, to have accomplished what he has at 26-years-old, coming from where we came from.

“This is a huge fight for me. This is more to me than winning a world title. I put my all into this. None of Trout’s experience matters. I’m a real lion and I’m going to show it.

“Austin Trout is just a name to me. He beat Cotto, so what? I have work to do. I’m focused on getting the job done.

“We (the brothers) both do different things, but we also have the same skills and the same power. No one in the division can match up to us.

“We always thought that we would be winners and that we would be competing at the top level. Now it’s time to make history. We want to prove why we’re at the top.

“Me and my brother have always wanted to be champions at the same time. There’s never been anything like this. This era, you will get a chance to enjoy us. We’ve worked very hard to get here and we’re going to reign on this level.

“After this, I’m coming for the (160-pound fighters). To be a top pound-for-pound fighter you need to dominate different divisions and that is my goal. That doesn’t mean I’m struggling with weight. I feel good right now but I think I will be even stronger at 160.

“May 21 there is nothing that is going to stop me from losing my belt.”

AUSTIN TROUT

“It’s no coincidence that I’m back at the top making a title run. I paid my dues and put in all the hard work necessary.

“I have nothing bad to say about Jermall as a person or a fighter. But at the end of the day, the history will be my own. I’m going to use him for my legacy, not the other way around.

“I worked hard to get here. I’m sharp and on weight. There is nothing that I feel like he can do to beat me that night.

“Charlo took a chance with this fight. There is no mistake in taking a chance. But will the chance end up in his favor? I hardly doubt it. This won’t be easy. I’m never in easy fights. They’re always great fights.

“Size won’t be a problem. He still has to make 154 pounds.

“I want to thank Jermall for taking this fight. He’s doing something that a lot of people won’t do. But at the end of the day, I’m going to be the lion tamer. I’m going to tame that lion.’’

What flaws do you see?…
“I don’t want to tell you about his flaws because he might fix them by Saturday, but we see a couple flaws.

On if it would hurt him to move up to 160…
“It may, it may not. We’re not looking at any extra edge or wishing to put all our eggs in one basket. What we’re banking on is our skillset and our grip to come out victorious. Whether it hurts him or not, it’s not going to matter. Only thing it’s going to do is make it easier for me.

“I’ve been there, I’ve been to the deep waters. I’ve seen many different types of strategies and styles. In a sense, there’s nothing that he brings to the table that I haven’t seen before.

“I’ve got a big dog in me that you’re going to see Saturday night. You’re going to see what should have been the main event. Me and Charlo, it’s going to be a great fight and I hope y’all tune in because I’m taking that belt.”

JERMELL CHARLO

“I appreciate everyone involved in putting this fight together. To me this is a card that people need to be pay attention to. I believe that everyone on this card is going to give it their all, because we all motivated each other to be here.

“I’m fighting John Jackson, the son of a legend. I don’t believe John Jackson will be able to live up to his dad and if his dad ever had to face me, I would have beat him too.

“We’re getting more and more experience. People thought that Gabriel Rosado was too big of a test for me but I dominated that fight. I’m going to pass any test they put in front of me. Over the course of time, you’re eventually going to have to say we the experience.

“I’m proud of what my brother has done. His success motivates me. He’s a world champion. These are the kind of things we look forward to.

“This is our time. There is no more that we can say. There is a lot that’s coming ahead of us.

“I’m coming to win. I trained hard. It’s time for a world title for me. I have to fulfill my end of the bargain. John Jackson has been in wars, but so have I. This is our time, me and my brother’s.

“Being on the same card as my brother is already a high standard so being on a card with the rest of the undercard guys, I’m honored and ready to show what I have to do. I’m ready to make history. I’m ready to win this belt and enjoy my vacation after.

“I’m sticking with 154 right now. I would love to go to 160 because it’s easier for me but because it’s easier that’s why I wouldn’t go up. Making 154 for him is easy as well, he just sees other options.”

JOHN JACKSON

“I’m extremely blessed to be here. I’m looking to make history. My dad was a champion and I’m going to do the same thing.

“Jermell is just selling the fight. We don’t take anything he says personally. We’ll humble him and put him in his place.

“This is a dream come true and the Jackson legacy will live on.

“It’s going to be a great night. This could be the best fight of the card, easily. If you watch my career, every single fight I bring it. You’re going to see action and explosiveness.’’

On Jermell Charlo’s comments about his father…
“That’s disrespectful. My dad paid his dues and to talk about my dad like that is kind of disrespectful. It’s not getting to me. Fighters use that to try to get in your head but it’s fine, I’ll let him pay in the ring.’’

If Jermell’s ego is getting to him…
“Yeah, he needs to humble himself. That was a little out of line. But we’ll see what he looks like in the ring.”

On what flaws he sees in his game…
“He has a lot of flaws. How he leans forward and waits a lot. But his style is perfect for my style. I always bring it and give 100 percent and we’re looking for a stoppage.

“It’s going to be explosive don’t miss it. SHOWTIME, it’s going down.”

Stacked Undercard Comes to Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Saturday, June 25: Jarrett Hurd vs. Oscar Molina & David Benavidez vs. Francy Ntetu; Plus Heather Hardy & Adam Kownacki In Action

Heather Hardy
BROOKLYN (May 19, 2016) – A stacked undercard featuring top rising talent and local favorites will light up the ring at Barclays Center in Brooklyn as part of an extraordinary night of action on Saturday, June 25.

The June 25 SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® on CBS event, presented by Premier Boxing Champions, is headlined by the highly anticipated welterweight showdown between world champion Keith Thurman and former champion Shawn Porter. Televised coverage begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT with an exciting battle between featherweight world champion Jesus Cuellar and former three-division world champion Abner Mares.

In undercard action, undefeated super welterweights, Maryland’s Jarrett Hurd (17-0, 11 KOs), and California’s Oscar Molina (13-0, 10 KOs), will collide in a 10-round bout while undefeated light heavyweights, Arizona’s David Benavidez (14-0, 13 KOs) and Francy Ntetu (16-0, 3 KOs), will mix it up in an eight-round fight.

Two staples of Brooklyn boxing will also enter the ring on June 25 as Heather “The Heat” Hardy (16-0, 4 KOs) competes in an eight-round super bantamweight attraction while Polish bruiser Adam Kownacki (13-0, 10 KOs) competes in a heavyweight bout.

Also in action on June 25 is hard-hitting, highly regarded 140-pound prospect Regis Prograis (17-0, 14 KOs) in a 10-round fight, 2012 Spanish Olympian Jonathan Alonso (8-0, 4 KOs) in a six-round super lightweight scrap and Mayweather Promotions prospect Josue Vargas (4-0, 3 KOs) in a four-round fight.

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by DiBella Entertainment, start at $49 and are on sale now. Tickets can be purchased online by visiting www.ticketmaster.com, www.barclayscenter.com or by calling 1-800-745-3000. Tickets are also available at the American Express Box Office at Barclays Center. Group discounts are available by calling 844-BKLYN-GP.

Fighting out of Accokeek, Md., Hurd has an unblemished professional record since turning pro in 2012. The 25-year-old opened up 2015 with a third-round stoppage of veteran Eric Mitchell and followed with a seventh-round stoppage of previously unbeaten Jeff Lentz in August. He stepped up in competition last November when he faced Frank Galarza in Las Vegas and was able to show off his considerable skill by stopping the previously unbeaten fighter in the sixth round of perhaps a career-best performance.

Representing Mexico, the 2012 Olympian Molina fights out of Norwalk, Calif., and is unbeaten in his brief professional career. The 26-year-old turned pro in 2013 and after winning a decision in his first bout, he went on to knock out six opponents in a row. His last bout came against fellow unbeaten Domonique Dolton and featured exciting back-and-forth action before the fight was ruled a majority draw.

The younger brother of undefeated Jose Benavidez, David has racked up a perfect 14 wins in 14 starts at just 19-years-old. Fighting out of Phoenix, Benavidez picked up four victories via stoppage in 2015 and kicked off his 2016 with a knockout of Kevin Cobbs in January. Most recently, he scored a second round knockout of Phillip Jackson Benson in April. The next challenge for Benavidez is the 33-year-old Ntetu, who won three times in 2015. Originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, he fights out of Montreal and will be making his fifth appearance in the U.S. on June 25.

A popular Brooklyn fighter who competed in Barclays Center’s first-ever professional female boxing match, Hardy has become a staple at the arena since. On June 25, she will be making her seventh appearance at Barclays Center. A little over two years after her pro debut, Hardy won an international title belt in the super bantamweight division in October 2014. In 2015, she defeated Noemi Bosques and Renata Domsodi twice. In her lone 2016 fight, she stopped Anna Donatella Hultin in the fourth round.

A two-time New York Golden Gloves champion, Kownacki had a big 2015, notching four victories including knockouts of Maurenzo Smith and Randy Easton. Born in Lomza, Poland, the 26-year-old now calls Brooklyn home. His 2016 campaign began in January at Barclays Center when he defeated Danny Kelly in front of a raucous Polish crowd.

Originally from New Orleans but fighting out of Houston, Prograis continues to work his way up the 140-pound rankings as he takes down veteran contenders. The 27-year-old looked sensational in his last outing as he scored a first round knockout over Mexico’s Aaron Herrera. Already named on of ESPN’s top prospects in 2015, he will look to cement his contender status in 2016.

Born in the Dominican Republic, Alonso moved to Spain at seven-years-old and would eventually represent the country at the 2012 Olympics. Now training in Brooklyn, the 25-year-old is undefeated since turning pro in 2014 while splitting time fighting in New York and Spain. He is coming off a victory over Ricardo Maldonado in February.

Vargas began boxing at age eight and by by age 13 the New York Daily News dubbed him a “prodigy.” Fighting out of New York, the 17-year-old Vargas recently signed to the Mayweather Promotions stable and will make his debut with his new promoter on June 25.

Magomedov vs. Hernandez Scouting Report Predator Takes on Hurricane

Arif Magomedov
Las Vegas, Nevada:
This weekend’s “Knockout at the D” event at Downtown Las Vegas Events Center (DLVEC) will feature the exciting main event between undefeated Arif “The Predator” Magomedov 17-0, 10 KOs, and Andrew “Hurricane” Hernandez, 11-4-1, 3 KOs, in a ten-round battle for the vacant WBC United States (USNBC) Middleweight Title live on CBS Sports Network. Below is the scouting report for this bout:

Category
Arif “The Predator” Magomedov
Andrew “Hurricane” Hernandez
Age
23
30
Record
17-0-0 (10 KOs)
11-4-1 (3 KOs)
Strength
Arif possesses power in both hands and puts together vicious combinations. He fights hungry and applies pressure throughout the fight.
Hernandez is a tough and fearless fighter who is also a fast starter in the ring. He has a slick right hand and is an adequate counter-puncher.
Weakness
The Predator has yet to face any top-level opposition, he must be careful not to overlook The Hurricane, who has faced better opposition thus far.
Andrew lacks sufficient speed and power in his hands; he will have to utilize his movement and counter-punching skills effectively to keep Magomedov’s pressure style at will.
Experience
Arif may be at a slight disadvantage, he has not faced any top ranked opponents at this point in his young career.
Hernandez will have the slight edge. He has fought better opposition and he has done so in multiple divisions; including wins against Jerry Odom and Jeff Page Jr.
Power
Arif throws powerful combinations and good body shots. He has a unique ability to physically break his opponents down throughout the fight.
The Hurricane will be at a disadvantage here, he does not carry much pop in either hand. He has yet to record a stoppage win as a middleweight contender
Speed
He has solid speed that comes on display during his vicious combinations. He throws a left hook to the body that looks as if it were shot out of a canon.
Andrew does not possess the most effective speed, however, what he lacks in speed he makes up for in timing. He has a right hand that when timed correctly can be a game-changer in the bout.
Endurance
Arif has gone a full 12 rounds once back in 2014, and has been 10 rounds on three separate occasions.
We are still uncertain on the strength of Andrew’s endurance; he has yet to go a full ten rounds.
Accuracy
The Predator has good accuracy; he likes to fight from a close distance, which makes it much easier to hit your target.
Hernandez is also an accurate puncher, he throws meaningful shots and does not like to waste any punches.
Defense
Arif cuts off the ring well, making it uncomfortable and difficult for some of his opponents to get their punches off.
Andrew moves around the ring well, he likes to stick and move rather than allow his opponents to use him as a punching bag.
Chin
Magomedov will have the edge here, he has been down earlier in his career but managed to recover and finish the fight. He has not been in any real danger since.
The Hurricane’s chin is on the fence for now. He has been stopped twice in his career, but he has also survived bouts at Super Middleweight and Light Heavyweight with some big punchers.
Style
Arif has an aggressive in-your-face style; he likes to walk his opponents down unleashing vicious combinations along the way.
Hernandez is a tough counter-puncher with more experience under his belt, he is an accurate puncher who utilizes a slick right hand when catching his opponents off guard.
Intangibles
The Predator has continuously strived to mix up his opposition and improve his own game. He took on a durable veteran in Darnell Boone whom he stopped early, and soon after that he out-boxed Derrick Webster, a slick technical fighter. He has completely flipped the switch here and will test his skillset against a tough and durable guy who has held his own against contenders in multiple divisions.
We are not even half-way through 2016 and this will be Hernandez’s 3rd bout of the year thus far, with one of those bouts coming against Light Heavyweight prospect Ahmed Elbiali. He will now take his talents to the Middleweight division and is wasting little time in trying to make a name for himself. He will attempt to rattle the rankings by knocking off the current WBC #2 Middleweight contender, Arif Magomedov.
Crowd Support
Arif may have a solid crowd support; his aggressive and physical style is appealing to many boxing fans.
Hernandez may be at a disadvantage here; he has not fought in Las Vegas since 2013, but a win over a top ranked Middleweight here will surely put him on notice with the fans in attendance and those tuning in as well.
The Match-up
Will Arif be able to handle Hernandez’ larger size?
Will Hernandez be able to handle Arif’s come-forward style?
Will Arif be able to handle Hernandez’ boxing ability and be able to cut off the ring?
Will Hernandez be able to take Arif’s power?

According to 2015 NABF Matchmaker of the Year, Jolene Mizzone, “Every young fighter should take a fight like this one when they are coming up and I give both guys credit for accepting the challenge. Hernandez is coming off a win and could have waited around for a different fight, but decided to test himself against the up-and-comer Magomedov. Arif, likewise, decided to challenge himself by choosing to fight the bigger guy who moves around the ring at time.”

EUBANK JR DEFENDS BRITISH TITLE AGAINST DORAN AT THE O2

Chris Eubank Jr will defend his British Middleweight title against Tom Doran at The O2 in London on June 25, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

Eubank Jr makes the first defence of the Lord Lonsdale belt he won against Nick Blackwell in March, taking on the hard-hitting Welsh danger man Doran on the undercard of Anthony Joshua’s first defence of his IBF World Heavyweight title.

Brighton star Eubank has stopped his last four opponents on his way to landing the British crown, and the 26 year old is determined to win the prestigious title outright before moving onto World honours – with father and son making is clear that the fearsome Gennady Golovkin is their number one target down the line.

“I’m happy to be back – Sky Sports is the best place to fight in British boing so to be back with them on the World stage is great,” said Eubank Jr. “Tom is going to try to cause an upset and we’re going to put on a dramatic night of action.

“It’s one fight at a time but when you know you are working towards a super-fight it plays a part – but it makes me train harder and focus more, as I know with every fight I am moving towards a top fight with Golovkin or anyone that has a World title fight. I am not looking past Tom, he knows beating me gets him to World level and massive publicity, so he is going to come to fight on June 25. But I will get past him and move onto massive nights.”

Eubank Sr added: “Tom is going to raise his game and he will be dangerous. He can punch and I’ve studied him, I’ve told my son not to look past the next one – the World championships will come. On June 25 it will be compelling drama – if Chris performs and we get past this one, we’re looking to get the Lonsdale belt for keeps in August – we are proud Englishmen and that means a lot to us.”

Doran enters his first British title fight on the back of his remarkable win in a two-round war with Luke Keeler. Doran hit the deck hard in the opening session of their clash in Liverpool in April, but sprang to his feet and returned the favour with interest, flooring the Irishman hard and nearly stopping him inside the first round. Keeler came out for the second but Doran twice put the Dubliner on the deck to end the contest and land the vacant WBC International strap. The 28 year old plans to derail Eubank’s World title dreams and rip the British strap away from him.

“This is what I want – the British title in my sights and I intend to take it with both hands,” said Doran. “I believe I am ready for this – I’ve boxed in front of big crowds at the Liverpool Echo and I will soak up a great atmosphere at The O2.

“I know Chris Eubank Jr is a great and talented fighter but I think I have the tools to overcome the challenge and stick to the game plan that we will take into the fight, I’ll get the job done and become British champion.”

Eubank joins a stellar cast at The O2 on June 25 as Anthony Joshua MBE defends his IBF World Heavyweight title against unbeaten American Dominic Breazeale.

George Groves and Martin Murray meet in a mouth-watering domestic Super-Middleweight blockbuster and WBA World title eliminator bout, John Wayne Hibbert clashes with Andrea Scarpa for the vacant WBC Silver Super-Lightweight title, Conor Benn is in action for the third time in the paid ranks and there’s a debut for Team GB star Felix Cash.

DUFFIELD: “ANYONE I CATCH IS GOING TO GET HURT”

Exciting Rainham Light-Heavyweight prospect Charlie Duffield is delighted to have signed a three year promotional deal with Frank Warren. Undefeated Duffield, 3-0 3 KO’s, goes in search of another explosive win on his highly-anticipated BoxNation debut at the home of boxing York Hall on June 10.

The former ABA finalist, managed by Peter Sims and trained by Jamie Williams at Dagenham’s Legend’s Gym, has slammed his way to three knockout wins in his first three professional outings and is hoping to move his career on to the next level under Hall of Fame Promoter Warren.

“I’m thrilled to have signed a promotional deal with Frank and can’t wait to make my BoxNation debut at York Hall. I’ve been working on new things in the gym with my trainer and my strength and conditioning coach and I’m looking to impress. I’ve already got the power so we’ve been working on my footwork and movement,” said Duffield.

He added: “I never go looking for knockouts but I’ve got massive punching power so anyone I catch is going to get hurt. If I get another knockout win on June 10 then happy days but if not I’ll just be happy with another win. As always it’s going to be a cracker. My fans are amazing and make a lot of noise!”

Big-hitting Duffield made his professional debut at York Hall last October where he stopped Brighton’s Iain Jackson inside three rounds. Following his impressive debut, Duffield made short work of Surrey’s Richard Harrison before making it three knockout wins from three fights against Bulgaria’s Merdjidin Yuseinov earlier this month. West Ham ABC product Duffield believes he has the skill and dedication to take him to the very top of the Light-Heavyweight division.

He said: “I’m looking to go all the way. Everything is a learning curve for me at the moment. I’m constantly learning new things in the gym so for now it’s all about progression and bettering myself in every fight. I’ve got faith in myself that I can go all the way as long as I stay dedicated and put the hard work in.”

Warren said: “We’re really excited to have Charlie on-board with us and to be working with Peter Sims and his other boxers. As we’ve seen from his first three fights he’s got raw power and a big punch on him. He has a strong amateur pedigree and possesses the right mind-frame to take him far in this sport.”

An action-packed show sees red-hot Mitchell Smith make his eagerly anticipated return to an action in an eight rounder, English Light-Heavyweight Champion Tom Baker fights over ten rounds and Light-Heavyweight monster Anthony Yarde goes in search of another KO. Top prospects Lucien Reid, Lyon Woodstock, D.P Carr, Billy Long, Jez Smith, Nathaniel Wilson and pro-debutant Ryan Garner all feature.

Tickets are available at ticketmaster.co.uk and eventim.co.uk at prices of £40 and £60.

Erislandy Lara, Vanes Martirosyan, Jermall Charlo, Austin Trout, Jermell Charlo & John Jackson Media Workout Quotes

002_img_8524_lara_victory
LAS VEGAS (May 18, 2016) – Fight week kicked off Wednesday with media workouts at the UNLV Boxing Gym for the six fighters competing in the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXINGâ tripleheader of 154-pound world title fights this Saturday, May 21 from The Chelsea inside of The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

Working out Wednesday and headlining the event were WBA Super Welterweight World Champion Erislandy Lara and top contender Vanes Martirosyan. Televised coverage begins live on SHOWTIME at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m.

Ticket prices start at $39, and are available online at www.cosmopolitanlasvegas.com or through Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000; www.ticketmaster.com.

Here is what the fighters had to say Wednesday:

ERISLANDY LARA

“I’m not surprised that I’m fighting Vanes again. It’s my job to fight whoever they put in front of me.

“I felt that I was a better fighter than him the first time and I’m a little better in almost every area since. One of the most important things is my way of training and my way of getting prepared. I feel that I am much more mature.

“I like being back in Las Vegas again. I’m definitely prepared to do what I do – and that’s win.

“After I win Saturday, I would love to fight GGG or Canelo, but I would prefer GGG. It’s not frustrating that I’m not fighting the biggest names all the time. I’m a headliner.

“I don’t feel any pressure. I’m just going to do my job and just keep winning. As long as I keep winning, everything will take care of itself.”

VANES MARTIROSYAN

“I’ve been fighting as a pro for over 10 years. This is definitely the most important fight of my career. It’s do or die. Win and I move 10 steps forward, lose and I go 10 steps backwards.

“Beating Lara this time is 10 times bigger than if I had won the first time. Lara has gotten better, maybe his style hasn’t changed much, but I feel that I’m much better too.

“There has been lots of changes in my camp. All for the better. I’m more focused in training. We’ve gone back to doing things the way we used to. I’ve really been dedicated. More than ever.

“I’ve given 100 percent every single day in the gym. This is going to be a tough fight. I hope he comes to me. It makes for a good fight. Actually, I think he is going to come forward a little more than people expect, but I’m prepared to chase him. Whatever it takes to be effective.

“If he is aggressive, once he feels my power, he is going to go back to what he does best – running.

“I’m coming to give my all.”

JERMALL CHARLO

“All of the lost opportunities were part of my journey to get to this point. I know people aren’t going to give me my credit for fighting Trout because people will feel like he has had his time in his career, which we all do, but now it’s my time and I’m taking every opportunity I can.

“I look back at the situations I’ve had to get here and it’s exciting. I have a big name opponent in Austin Trout and I feel like the underdog. I’m the young buck in the game who’s trying to be the lion. Although I do have the belt, its because I had to take it from someone that didn’t deserve it.

“Every time Austin Trout gets to this level, he fails. He didn’t fight the same Miguel Cotto, he just wasn’t himself that night. I have to come in there and take what’s mine.

“Whatever happens, I’m excited. We train, we prepare for 12 rounds. I’m prepared for whatever I need to be.

“I’m excited to be here and fight and be able to support my brother. We’re able to roll through anything and keep looking forward. The good and the bad.

“Everything I’ve been through; I try to move forward every fight. I got the belt from Cornelius Bundrage, I defended the belt and now I have the opportunity to fight Austin Trout – a bigger name.”

AUSTIN TROUT

“I take my hat off to him. He’s undefeated. He’s a champion. I’ve been through more to get to where I’m at. I’m more of a dangerous fighter.

“He’s not one to shy away from a challenge. I feel like I’m a better fighter. I’m shocked that I got a title shot this fast. I thought I was going to have to go back to the drawing board. The opportunity came and I’m so excited.

“I’ve been working on my inside game. The things outside of the ring – tightening up myself as a person. It’s been helping me in the ring.”

On Jermall predicting a knockout:
“He’s dreaming. Everyone has dreams, but I’ve been known to bust people’s bubbles. No one has been able to knock me out. He thinks he’s a great man. A better man than Canelo or Lara? He’s tripping.

“I’m probably his toughest test to date.

“The next chapter would be to fight my mandatory, unify and be undisputed champion.”

JERMELL CHARLO

“This is history in the making. It’s extremely exciting. We never really thought about it like this. We knew we would be boxing and winning titles, but this is special. We have the opportunity to both be world champions at the same time.

“We don’t know what to expect on Saturday, but we’re excited to put on a show and make a mark.

“I have to get in there and prove to my opponent and the rest of the world that I’m dangerous and I will be victorious.

“We always wanted to fight. We always want to prove ourselves to each other. About everything. We caused trouble but found ourselves in boxing.

“I thought my opportunity would come first, but everything happens for a reason. Look at this moment. It’s motivated me and now it’s paying off.

“The new training camp has been an adjustment, not being with my brother every day. I’ve been able to define who I am and my brother is able to do his thing.

“My motivation is that I was once with my brother everyday. What pushed me so much in camp was knowing that I’m not with my brother everyday, but I’m still in the same shape, even better and stronger. Not through coaches, but in general. Mentally I’m the same or better. We didn’t get worse because we split. The point is what we are doing to stay in shape physically and mentally to be the best we can be.”

JOHN JACKSON

“This is going to be a good fight. It could be the best fight on the card. I’m an explosive fighter so expect fireworks.

“My dad has given me advice my whole career. I have a lot of great insight about how to manage my emotions. He’s instrumental in my corner. I’m 100 percent ready.

“There is a lot of pressure on Jermell, but I’m sure he’s not over thinking it. I’m expecting the best Charlo in there.

“I go in there to go to war. Whatever happens, happens. I’m going to leave it all in the ring and give the fans a great show.

“I’m happy to be the underdog. I like to be the underdog and prove people wrong. I’m happy to be in this position. I was an underdog in the Olympics. I love the pressure. He has more to lose than I do.

“I’ve been dreaming about this moment my whole life. I’m 100 percent ready for this and I can’t wait to perform under the lights.

“Make sure you tune-in, because I’m going all out for the belt.”

LEONARD ELLERBE, CEO of Mayweather Promotions

“We’re very busy. We are going full steam ahead. We are doing events, putting butts in the seats and promoting our fighters.

“This is a great card. Anytime you can put the top fighters in a single weight class on the same show, it is bound to be a great event for the fans and for the sport in general.

“We’re happy to be working with SHOWTIME once again to put on another tremendously competitive fight card for the fans.”

STATEMENTS FROM CANELO ALVAREZ AND OSCAR DE LA HOYA

Canelo Alvarez
LOS ANGELES (May 18, 2016) – Ring Magazine and Lineal Middleweight World Champion Canelo Alvarez today issued the following statement:

“After much consideration, today, I instructed my team at Golden Boy Promotions to continue negotiating a fight with Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin and to finalize a deal as quickly as possible. I also informed the WBC that I will vacate its title. For the entirety of my career, I have taken the fights that no one wanted because I fear no man. Never has that been more true than today. I will fight ‘GGG,’ and I will beat ‘GGG’ but I will not be forced into the ring by artificial deadlines. I am hopeful that by putting aside this ticking clock, the two teams can now negotiate this fight, and ‘GGG’ and I can get in the ring as soon as possible and give the fans the fight they want to see.”

Golden Boy Promotions Chairman and CEO Oscar De La Hoya today issued the following statement:

“There is no denying that Canelo is the biggest star in the sport of boxing. He is eager to get in the ring with ‘GGG’ to show the world that he is also the best pound for pound fighter in the sport, but we won’t negotiate under a forced deadline. Now that the WBC title is off the table, I am hopeful that ‘GGG’ and his promoter K2 Promotions will come to the table in good faith and get this deal done.”

World champion Beibut Shumenov to defend title vs. Junior Wright this Saturday night in Las Vegas

Beibut Shumenov
LAS VEGAS (May 18, 2016) – World Boxing Association (WBA) Interim Cruiserweight World champion Beibut Shumenov (16-2, 10 KOs) makes his first title defense this Saturday night (May 21) against WBA No. 11-rated Junior “Hurricane” Wright (15-1-1, 12 KOs) at The Chelsea inside of The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

“I’m happy to get the opportunity to fight this Saturday night,” Shumenov said, “but I wish that I could fight more often. I’ve been ready since January. Every training session I gain new knowledge. I am a completely different fighter than in my last fight.”

Shumenov’s last fight was back in July, in which he defeated B.J. Flores (31-1-1, 20 KOs) by 12-round unanimous decision in Las Vegas to capture the vacant WBA Interim title, making the former WBA light heavyweight champion Shumenov the first professional boxer from Kazakhstan to be a two-division world champion.

By becoming the WBA Interim cruiserweight champion, Shumenov also became the No. 1 ranked mandatory challenger for WBA Super cruiserweight titlist Denis Lebedev (28-2, 21 KOs), who also fights this Saturday in Russia against International Boxing Federation (IBF) champion Victor Emilio “El Tyson de Abasto” Ramirez (22-2-1, 17 KOs) in a unification match.

The WBA has already mandated that the Lebedev-Ramirez must fight Shumenov within 120 days. The WBA, however, has failed to explain why it also declared a WBA “regular” cruiserweight world title fight this Friday night in France between No. 2 Yunier Dorticos and No. 5 Youri Kalenga (since upgraded to No. 3), especially after announcing that it would work this year to have only one world champion in each weight class.

Shumenov, of course, is risking his mandatory position by fighting Wright, the former 5-time Chicago Golden Gloves champion. “I need to stay active,” Shumenov explained why he’s taking such a risk. “Every fight, I gain experience and it also helps me develop my fighting skills.”

The 12-round Shumenov vs. Wright title fight is on the non-televised portion of The Cosmopolitan show.

Fans may friend Beibut Shumenov on his Facebook Fan Page at www.facebook.com/BeibutShumenov.
