Dashon Johnson Returns To Philly June 3 Against DeCarlo Perez

DeCarlo Perez
Philadelphia, PA—Hard-luck middleweight Dashon Johnson, of Escondido, CA, who came within seconds of upsetting Jesse Hart recently at the 2300 Arena, returns to the same ring when he takes on DeCarlo Perez , of Atlantic City, NJ, in the scheduled eight-round main event Friday evening, June 3. First of seven fights is at 7 p.m.

Johnson (left), 28, who floored the unbeaten Hart in the sixth (waived off by the referee Ernie Sharif) and in the closing seconds of the 10th round, lost a unanimous decision March 18 by scores of 95-94, 97-92, and 98-91, but later filed a protest over the work of Sharif.

A pro since 2008, Johnson has made a career out of fighting some of the best junior middleweights, middleweights and super middleweights, going 19-19-4, 6 K0s against the kind of schedule you rarely see any longer in boxing.

Twelve of Johnson’s opponents were unbeaten when he fought them and his list of opposition includes: Julian Williams, Glen Tapia, Luis Arias, Jermell Charlo, Dominic Wade, Sergio Mora, Craig McEwan, Louis Rose, Adam Trupish, Daquan Arnett and Yudell Johnson.

Only Williams has managed to stop him in 42 fights. Johnson had won four in a row, including a revenge win over Mike Gravonski, before losing to Hart.

“I’m excited to be coming back to Philly, a place where the fans appreciate me for my fighting style and my grind rather than looking at my record,” Johnson said. “I’m grateful to Peltz Boxing for bringing me back and I am looking to pick up right where I left off and put up a great show for the fans.”

Perez (right), 25, knows a victory over Johnson will get his career back on track after suffering a setback Jan. 22 when he was stopped by Rob Brant, of St. Paul, MN, in the fourth round of their Jan. 22 fight in Tucson, AZ, for the vacant NABA middleweight title.

Drained by making 160 for that match, Perez has decided to put on a few pounds and grow into the super middleweight division. The fight with Johnson will be contested at 164 pounds.

“I know people will criticize me about my last fight but that is behind me,” Perez said. “My focus is on my future and destroying everything and everyone who steps into the ring with me. That was a different fighter (against Brant). I wasn’t myself throughout camp but as a fighter I’m not going to run away from a fight. All I can do is fix my mistakes and what was wrong and come back better than ever.

“I have refocused myself purely on my boxing career—and nothing else. Come June 3, everyone will see a completely different fighter.

“I feel this fight against Dashon Johnson is going to be a great competitive fight. He has been in there with good fighters but I believe on June 3 he will be facing his toughest challenge. I know he will be ready and I will make sure I am above and beyond prepared.”

A pro since 2010, Perez is 15-4-1, 5 K0s, and he is 3-0 at the 2300 Arena, where he outpointed Jesse Nicklow and scored knockouts over Tyrone Brunson and Tolan Tascoe.

Prior to the Brant fight, Perez had won nine out of 10, including an impressive win on ShoBox last summer against Juan Ubaldo Cabrera, of the Dominican Republic, who was 23-0 at fight time.

ABOUT JUNE 3

The Dashon Johnson-DeCarlo Perez fight headlines a seven-bout card at the 2300 Arena, located at 2300 South Swanson Street in South Philadelphia (between Ritner & Porter, Front and 2d Streets). The June 3 fight is being sponsored by Parx Casino and Coors Light. Doors open at 6 pm; first fight at 7pm. GENNADY “GGG” GOLOVKIN SCORES HIGHEST HBO TV RATING FOR 2016!! “CHOCOLATITO” WORLD TITLE DEFENSE IS HIGHEST CO-FEATURE

Gennady Golovkin
Los Angeles, CA (April 26, 2016) Boxing Superstar and Unified Middleweight World Champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin’s, 35-0 (32KO’s), second round destruction of Mandatory Challenger Dominic Wade, 18-1-0 (12KO’s) this past Saturday night was the most watched HBO boxing event in 2016 with 1,325,000 viewers.

“We’re very happy with these ratings for Gennady which have continued to see extraordinary growth since his first fight on HBO in September 2012,” said Tom Loeffler. “As he continues to sell-out arenas in America and garner the top sponsorships in boxing with the JORDAN Brand, Apple, Tecate, Bijan and Samsung, among others, it’s clear that Gennady is one of the most marketable fighters in the world.”

“Selling out arenas in New York City and Los Angeles is very rare for a boxer, but Gennady continues to transcend the sport of boxing as he crosses over to the mainstream.”

Golovkin’s victory over Wade took place in front of a sold-out crowd of 16,353 at the Fabulous Forum, the highest selling boxing event in the storied history of the Fabulous Forum and the highest in California in the last seven years. Along with his previous two fights in Los Angeles, Golovkin has now sold 38,408 tickets in his adopted home of California, by far the most of any other boxer over the same period.

Additionally, Golovkin’s knockout victory of David Lemieux on October 17, 2015 drew a sell-out at Madison Square Garden of 20,548 boxing fans. As at MSG, Golovkin broke the merchandise record for a boxing event at the Fabulous Forum with over $100,000 sold to his adoring fans.

The knockout of Wade was Golovkin’s 16th world title defense and his 22nd straight knockout victory. He retained his WBA/IBF/IBO and WBC “Interim” Middleweight Titles.

In the co-main event on Saturday night, Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez, 45-0 (38KO’s), defended his WBC Flyweight Championship with a dominant 12-round unanimous decision over world ranked McWilliams Arroyo, 16-3-0 (14KO’s). The victory by the Consensus #1 Pound-for-Pound Fighter drew 1,001,000 viewers, making it the fourth highest rated HBO fight in 2016.

“Roman performed in spectacular fashion and with this rating proved that he is more than capable of headlining his own show,” said Loeffler. “We look forward to working with HBO and Mr. Honda of Teikin Promotions on putting together his next world title defense.”

LIAM WALSH: “TROY’S GOOD BUT I’M BETTER ACROSS THE BOARD.”

After almost 10 months absent recuperating from a hand injury, top grade Cromer super-feather Liam Walsh intends reminding the fight frat of his quality when he eases back into the fray with a mandatory defence of his British title this weekend, writes Glynn Evans.

The unbeaten 29 year old – world rated at both 130 and 135lbs – swaps leather with Coventry banger Troy James on Saturday’s blockbuster bill at the Copper Box, east London. BoxNation screen live.

‘My mindset was on preparing for a world title final eliminator but this is actually a far better fight than it’s being given credit for,’ says the man they call ‘Destiny’ who has rubbed out 13 of his 19 victims inside distance.

‘Obviously I’m confident but Troy’s a decent opponent. In 21 fights, he’s only lost to (WBO world champion Terry) Flanagan in a full 10 rounder, plus he had a defeat in Prizefighter which means very little. I remember him as a young amateur and he’d won something like 12 with ten stoppages. He recently left (English title challenger) Chris Male out cold. He’s got my full attention.’

An all action switch-hitter, Liam’s return is further sweetened by an overdue opportunity to fight on the same card as twin brother Ryan for the first time since October 2010. The latter defends his British featherweight crown against Belfast banger James Tennyson.

‘I’m looking forward to us both being victorious and having good nights. It’d be a massive anti-climax for both of us, if one lost,’ states Liam who concedes there could be complications.

‘It appears I’ll be on after Ryan on Saturday cos obviously I’m miles better (laughs)! That means that, for once, I might not be able to assist him. But corner work is overrated anyway. It’s basically down to the fighter.’

The Brothers Walsh each have one successful defence on their ledgers already and, if they emerge triumphant at ‘The Box That Rocks’ –Ryan enters a marginal underdog with the bookies – expect an almighty scramble for family bragging rights.

‘Every British fighter wants to own a Lonsdale Belt outright,’ says Liam, the younger by a matter of minutes.

‘Because I’m miles better, I’ll dig my heels in next time and insist that I go on before Ryan just so I can say I beat him in the race to win it for keeps!

‘Seriously, I thought I was going to have to give my British title up to chase higher honours but, if I win on Saturday, I’ll be sooo close, it’d be criminal (to vacate). If something bigger is offered I’d be between a rock and a hard place.

‘Perhaps, I could return to the domestic scene later in my career if needed. For me, boxing isn’t a sport, it’s a life and I’ll continue doing it for as long as my body allows me.’

Given that his eight year pro innings has been blighted by injury and ill-fortune, lionheart Liam daren’t take his eyes off the prize against ‘Terrifying Troy’; a warhorse unbeaten in three and a half years and armed with heavy fists.

‘I’m up for this fight, don’t worry,’ says Walsh who, as usual, has been beasting himself beneath the Tenerife sun..

‘Honestly, this is the best I’ve ever made weight in my life, and that includes when I’ve fought up at lightweight. I’ve been much stricter with my diet. Not a single piece of artificial sugar has crossed my lips and yesterday (Sunday 24th), I was only 4 ½ lbs over. I’m usually that on the morning of a fight. Older and wiser!

He concludes: ‘If I was in Troy’s position, aged 32, getting my one and only chance, I’d probably train my b******s off and declare war, try to get me to fall short then bomb me out. We both know he won’t be able to outbox me but, regardless, I’ve got everything covered.

‘He’s good, but I’m better across the Board. I’ve dedicated my whole life to this.’

WBC, RING MAGAZINE, AND LINEAL MIDDLEWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION CANELO ALVAREZ MEDIA WORKOUT QUOTES

Canelo_Alvarez
SAN DIEGO (April 25, 2016) – WBC, Ring Magazine and Lineal Middleweight World Champion Canelo Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) today hosted a media workout at the House of Boxing in San Diego, just a week before he departs for Las Vegas for his upcoming showdown with Amir “King” Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) on Saturday, May 7 at the new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View® beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT.

Canelo was joined by Eddy Reynoso, head trainer, Jose ‘Chepo’ Reynoso, manager and trainer, and Golden Boy Promotions Chairman and CEO Oscar De La Hoya at today’s media workout. Canelo and his team spoke onsite about his matchup with Khan and his training leading up to the mega event for his middleweight titles. Below is what Canelo and his team had to say at today’s workout:

CANELO ALVAREZ, WBC, Ring Magazine and Lineal Middleweight World Champion:

“I always prepare 100 percent for every fight. They only thing that changes is the strategy. Every fighter is different, every fighter brings different skills and you have to adjust for that. For Amir, we have focused on increasing my hand speed, counter punching and preparing for lots of movement and footwork.

“We believe [Amir] will adopt a similar style to Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Erislandy Lara; however, we have made sure that I am prepared for that style of boxing and anything he brings to the table to not be surprised on fight night.

“I have my game plan and he has his. We are both preparing to the best of our ability to what we know are each other’s strengths. Yet, fight night can be very unpredictable. You have to adjust to what your opponent is doing and also apply pressure at the same time. I can’t predict a definite outcome, but I can say that I am going to bring the best of me in the ring.

“I don’t like to talk trash just to be able to sell fights. What I do is I train hard and do my talking in the ring. I want people to respect me and to follow my fights, not because of what I say but what I do.”

OSCAR DE LA HOYA, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions:

“On May 7, Canelo is going to go out there and go out there for the knockout. He will go out there and be aggressive and continue giving the fight fans what they want to see.

“It’s great for Canelo to have this fight on Cinco de Mayo because its important for the fight fans to carry that tradition. It is a tradition that Julio Cesar Chavez started. On that date, people want to see fights, people want to see action. People want to see great boxing and they will get that on May 7 because Canelo is an exciting fighter to watch. I think it’s important that we have a fighter like Canelo own this Cinco de Mayo weekend because it’s guaranteed action. It’s a win-win.”

EDDY REYNOSO, Head Trainer for Canelo Alvarez:

“Canelo is a very intelligent fighter. He takes in everything very quickly and is always willing to learn. This camp, we have made sure to focus on increasing his hand speed. We have made sure that he is prepared to quickly counter punch when needed.

“Amir’s style is one of speed, both hand speed and foot movement. We have made those adjustments to Canelo’s camp and made sure to select sparring partners with similar styles in order to prepare Canelo for fight night.

“Canelo is in the best shape of his career and the fans will be surprised at how fast and strong he is going to be. We are 100 percent prepared for anything Amir brings on fight night.”

JOSE ‘CHEPO’ REYNOSO, Manager and Trainer for Canelo Alvarez:

“We have seen Canelo grow up as a fighter and every year he gets better and better. Canelo is not at his peak yet. We will see a better Canelo this upcoming fight, better than when he fought Cotto.”

“We have adjusted a lot for this training camp. Amir is going to be a challenge, and we have to make sure we are not surprised on fight night. One of things we have worked on for Canelo is to make sure he is faster and stronger.”

Andre Berto Training Camp Notes

Andre Berto
OAKLAND, CALIF. (April 25, 2016) – Former two-time world champion Andre “The Beast” Berto has wrapped up training camp and is set to travel to Southern California for his highly anticipated rematch against “Vicious” Victor Ortiz that headlines Premier Boxing Champions on FOX and FOX Deportes this Saturday, April 30 at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by TGB Promotions, are priced at $209, $105, $53, and $27, plus applicable taxes, fees and service charges, are on sale now and are available for purchase online at AXS.com.

Prior to the start of televised fights, an Official Fan Fest will be held for ticket holders outside of StubHub Center. The events start at 2:30 p.m. PT and features a Corona Beer Garden, food trucks, music from the band Metalachi and autograph signings with popular fighters including Leo Santa Cruz, Abner Mares, Shawn Porter and more.

Here is what Berto had to say from training camp:

On his improvements since his first fight against Ortiz:

“I’ve improved tremendously. Mentally and all the way around the board. There was so much that went into that fight and that camp the first time. I shouldn’t have fought that fight, but being who I am, I wanted to get in there. I was just a young fighter who didn’t take the fight seriously. I overlooked my opponent. Now I’m a much more mature fighter. I’ve pushed myself for this camp.

“This fight has always been on my mind. Even when I tried to move on, other people continued to remind me about it. Everyone said I needed to get him back. That’s the fight everyone has wanted to see and that everyone deserves. I’m going to give everyone the fight they deserve.

“I believe that coming back from my shoulder surgery that I’ve been more motivated and improving as a fighter. Everyone has seen the improvements. We’re definitely ready for anything he wants to bring. If he’s aggressive we’re ready and everyone knows I can stand there and punch”

On this training camp with Virgil Hunter:

“Everything is going great. It’s been a long, tough camp. I’m excited and ready to close it all in. We’ve done all the work. We’re in great shape. No stone was left unturned. It’s been a great eight or nine week camp.”

On sharing training camp with Amir Khan and Andre Ward and the motivation it provides:

“We all feed off of each other. All of us have pretty much been in camp together leading up to and through all of our fights. Even now Andre is there to watch us spar and work. It’s great motivation for all of us to be there. We’re all pushing each other to get better every day.”

On how Virgil Hunter has helped him improve as a fighter:

“I call Virgil the professional because he’s a teacher. He works you mentally. Each and every day. It’s like being in school. He drills it in your head over and over. He doesn’t let you go through the motions. You have to stay on track mentally to work on all of the things that you’ve been working on. He’s more of a teacher than a trainer.”

On what he learned from his fight against Floyd Mayweather:

“A lot of people can’t handle the atmosphere and the buildup of that magnitude. I got the chance to really find out how to handle it all. I think I surprised a lot of people around me with how easy I was taking it. I think Floyd was surprised too, he thought I would get shaken like other guys. But I felt like I was supposed to be there. I wasn’t going to be the guy who stands there in shock.”

On preparing for Ortiz:

“You have to be prepared for whatever he brings to the table. You don’t know how Victor is going to fight and if he’s going to do his extra stuff. Or if he’s going to try to box. Who knows? Maybe you hit him two or three times and he feels like he doesn’t want to be there. I’m prepared for the Victor of five years ago.”

On Ortiz’s claim that he will knock out Berto:

“That’s what he said the first time. I’ve made it evident as well that I’ll finish him and finish this chapter. I want it to be over. Still for some reason my name comes up. People continue to cross us together. I just want to finish this chapter and finish in style.”

On what fans can expect Saturday night:

“The fans should expect an exciting fight. They might see the start of round 13 from the first one. It’s going to be extremely exciting. I doubt it’s going the distance. This is the fight the people deserve.”

AMIR KHAN EYES VIJINDER SINGH INDIA SHOWDOWN

Amir Khan
British boxing star Amir Khan wants to take on Indian boxing sensation Vijender Singh.

Bolton hero Khan is gearing up for his maiden middleweight contest against Mexican great Canelo Alvarez on Saturday 7th May, shown exclusively in the UK on BoxNation.

Two-time former world champion Khan, 31 wins, 3 losses and 19 KO’s, faces the biggest challenge of his life when he steps up in weight to take on Canelo in a truly career defining fight.

Lightening quick Khan has faced insurmountable odds in the past when as a 17-year-old at the 2004 Athens Olympics he mesmerised the nation as he battled his way to a silver medal.

King Khan accepts he will face a “monster” when fighting Alvarez but is confident he can summon his underdog spirit and prove his class on the global stage. Once he has overcome WBC middleweight champion Alvarez, Khan says he’d love to take on Singh in his Indian homeland.

Speaking to Indian media from San Francisco ahead of his fight against Alvarez he said: “Vijinder is the talent that India has in professional boxing and I would want to fight him in India soon,”

He added: “I am a big fan of Mary Kom and Vijender Singh. They are where they are because they had the opportunities. It’s the same for most boxers and that’s why I want to create these academies so that the facilities reach to all corners of India. I hope to create world-class boxers and MMA fighters in the next 2-3 years from India.”

Singh, 30, has made an explosive start to life in the paid ranks by blowing away his first four opponents inside three rounds. The Indian superstar takes on French terror Matiouze Royer in his fifth professional fight this Saturday at Stratford’s Copper Box Arena. Knockout merchant Singh knows it is crucial that he wins at the Copper Box Arena and then again at Bolton in May before setting his eyes on a huge Indian homecoming in the summer.

Heavyweight sensation Hughie Fury headlines the card when he challenges American Fred Kassi for the Vacant WBO Intercontinental Title; Red-hot Liam Walsh defends his British and Commonwealth Super-Featherweight titles against Troy James; Ovill McKenzie and Dmytro Kucher clash for the Vacant European Cruiserweight Championship; Ryan Walsh defends his British Featherweight Championship against James Tennyson; Anthony Nelson defends his Commonwealth Super-Flyweight Championship against Jamie Conlon. The undercard features big-hitting light-heavyweight star Anthony Yarde, Southampton super-welterweight Joe Pigford, Erith super-bantamweight Lewis Pettitt; Chingford super-featherweight Boy Jones Jnr; Indian middleweight sensation Vijender Singh; Chelmsford super-middleweight Billy Long, West Ham super-welterweight Sammy McNess; Sidcup super-featherweight D.P Carr; West Ham super-lightweight Ben Smith; Hornchurch super-lightweight Sanjeev Sahota; Nantwich heavyweight Nathan Gorman; Enfield super-middleweight Barney Joe Jones, and Stains-Upon-Thames welterweight Tony Bange.

INTRODUCING NEWCOMER TONY BANGE: “NAZ NAMED ME ‘TNT EXPLOSIVE AFTER WATCHING ME SMASH THE PADS!

Dynamite-punching Wraysbury welter Tony Bange debuts this weekend in a four rounder against Bulgaria’s Teodor Stefanov at The Copper Box on Saturday, writes Glynn Evans.

The Berkshire bomber’s unbridled aggression and concussive punching made him a huge hit in the Eurosport-televised Queensbury Boxing League and he now threatens to wreak similar carnage operating under the jurisdiction of the British Boxing Board of Control.

‘I had 30 on the Queensberry Boxing League circuit and I never lost. I won everything. However, I had aspirations to be a boxing world champion so I had to apply for a Board (of Control) licence,’ explains the 25 year old who shall be mentored and managed by Hall of Fame superstar Naseem Hamed.

‘Naseem is a friend of my fathers and we met before my first on the Queensberry Boxing League. Naz has been like a second father to me.

‘When I contemplated going pro I said to him: ‘Please be honest. If you don’t think I can do it, tell me.’ He replied that he not only did he like what he saw, he wanted to manage me! He named me ‘TNT Explosive’ after watching me smash the pads.

‘Naz has shown me how to control a fight. He also brought in a punching specialist for me. His cousin (Anas Oweida) trains me. Naz knows the right people we need to get involved and the right route to steer me. He freely shares his knowledge and does pads with me.’

Unarmed combat has been a staple in the Hillingdon born hope’s life since his primary school years.

He recalls: ‘Dad boxed amateur and, from the age of just five or six, he taught us how us to look after ourselves. He was my coach for my first 10 years. At school, I was very cocky so I was always in a fight. I had to be able to handle myself otherwise I’d have got battered every day!

‘Then, between the ages of 14 and 17, I had 10 or 11 amateur fights at the Hayes ABC, before drifting into the unlicensed thing.

‘The experience that I gained in the Queensbury Boxing League will certainly help me with regard to performing before a crowd. Also, there were plenty of ex pros on that circuit. I once beat Daryl Setterfield. There was a time when I used to fight up at cruiserweight so no welterweight is going to scare me. I’m used to being hit hard by big men.’

Whilst there are unquestionably a few rough edges that still require planing before he can contemplate title fights, the savage Sikh insists he’ll not be caught short with regard to application.

Boxing is my life, it’s all I do,’ he says.

‘I train three times a day, cardio first thing, boxing gym during the day then a strength and conditioning session before I go to bed. In between, the only TV that is on in my house is BoxNation. I particularly study the older stuff; the Tyson era, the Naz era, the Masters!’

After the disappointment of a false dawn when the proposed Harrow bill was scrapped earlier this month, banger Bange can’t wait to fly out of the traps and showcase his explosive wares on Saturday. And he enters with the incentive that an impressive showing should secure a berth on Vijender Singh’s homecoming show in India this June.

‘My family originates from the Punjab – I was there myself six months ago – so a slot on the bill in Delhi would be unbelievable,’ he admits.

But first he is promising capital fight fans a debut to savour.

‘Stylewise, I’m told I’m similar to Mike Tyson, lots of head movement and serious power in both hands. It all comes through timing and I love to work the body. In my last ‘unlicensed’ fight they had to stretcher the guy out the ring after I broke his ribs,’ he states.

‘I don’t still want to be boxing after the age of 30 so it’s going to be a quick ride, smash and grab! This year is all about building a platform and getting my name out there. I’m exciting. Just you wait and see.’

JOSHUA DEFENDS WORLD CROWN AGAINST BREAZEALE ON JUNE 25

Anthony Joshua
Anthony Joshua MBE will make the first defence of his IBF World Heavyweight title against unbeaten American Dominic ‘Trouble’ Breazeale at The O2 in London on June 25.

Joshua ripped took both the belt and unbeaten record of American Charles Martin at the same venue on April 9, and he’ll be looking to take another ‘0’ in his maiden defence.

Breazeale brings a formidable 17-0 record to the UK with 15 wins inside the distance and enters the clash on the back of forcing Amir Mansour to retire after five rounds of their clash in January. The Californian is no stranger to London having represented USA in the 2012 Olympic Games, where Joshua won gold.

“I can’t tell you how excited I am to fight again, especially at The O2 which I have made my fortress,” said Joshua. “My coaches have watched Breazeale for a long time and they knew he was going to be a player in the division and now we get the chance to go war on June 25. It’s sure to be explosive, both of us like to let our hands go and score knockouts, we are both undefeated and both have Olympic pedigree.

“I am looking to get passed Breazeale in style and continue moving towards the unification fight everybody is waiting for. I’m looking forward to being part of a stacked night of boxing and defending my title in style.”

A huge undercard is being pieced together by promoter Eddie Hearn, and the first fight announced is a mouth-watering Super-Middleweights George Groves and Martin Murray in an eliminator bout for the WBA crown.

Both men are hunting a World title shot in the second half of the year, a fourth in the division for Groves and a first at 168lbs for Murray, who boxed three times for a World crown at Middleweight.

“This is a fight I’ve wanted for a while and I’m delighted it’s made,” said Murray. “I’ve had some huge profile fights all over the world in Golovkin, Martinez and Abraham but never had the big one in the UK. This is a fight that British fight fans can really get their teeth into and I’m looking forward to getting the win and moving on to challenging for the World title later in the year.”

“I’m very excited to be defending my WBA international belt against Martin Murray back at the O2,” said Groves. “I’ve had two great performances this year, both in London and the latest one back at The O2. It’s always a happy hunting ground for me.

”Martin is the perfect fight for me at this stage. He’s a seasoned campaigner, who’s boxed at the highest level for quite some time. He is a world level opponent and I’ll have to be fully focused and prepared to beat him.

”A win against Murray on the biggest stage, will open a lot of doors and bring me a step closer to achieving my goal of becoming world champion. I’m fully expecting it to be a war, I can’t wait.”

Promoter Eddie Hearn added: “June 25 is going to be a huge night from start to finish. It’s great that Britain’s newest super star is staying active, many would have still been celebrating but its back to business for AJ. The fight with Breazeale is going to be explosive- he is 6″7 and is one of the few whose KO ratio is up there with Anthony’s. He has come through the similar elite amateur set up and has worked his way into this shot and is ready to go.

“We are looking to put on one of our strongest cards yet at The O2, topped by the huge domestic clash between George Groves and Martin Murray which is set to be a wonderful clash. Watch this space for some more big fights added soon.”

Tickets go on sale today (April 25) at 10am to Matchroom Fight Pass members from the Fight Pass area at www.matchroomboxing.com and O2 Priority members at www.theO2.co.uk. Tuesday April 26 at 10am sees the venue and AXS pre-sale before tickets go on general sale at 10am on Wednesday April 27.

Tickets priced between £40 to £500 will be available from www.theO2.co.uk and on 0844 856 0202. VIP tickets are £1,000 and available exclusively from Matchroom Boxing www.matchroomboxing.com.

Face value tickets for June 25 will also be available from http://www.stubhub.co.uk/matchroom-boxing-tickets/ from 10am on April 27. StubHub is the official ticket partner and marketplace of Matchroom Boxing and Anthony Joshua.

BELFAST BANGER JAMES TENNYSON: “IF I LAND PRECISELY WITH ANY SHOT, I’M CAPABLE OF DOING DAMAGE!

Nuclear punching Northern Irish featherweight James Tennyson swaggers into London next weekend intent on relieving Ryan Walsh of his British title, exclusively live on BoxNation.

The Lisburn born ‘Assassin’ has clattered 13 of his 16 victims to early defeat since debuting as a teenager in 2012 and he knows his best route to bagging a Lonsdale Belt rests with him leaving the Norfolk man gazing up at the ring lights.

Thus far, the 22 year olds potent punching means that, on average, his fights conclude inside three rounds.

‘It’s difficult to explain. I think it’s just a case of my aggression and natural strength,’ says the Tony Dunlop coached, Mark Dunlop managed banger who recently penned a promotional deal with Frank Warren.

‘Once the bell goes I work very hard to get the job (stoppage) done and it just happens. I’ve no pet punch. If I land precisely with any shot, I’m capable of doing damage.

‘As an amateur, I was in plenty of good scraps but I really didn’t stop many. The kayos only started to come as a pro once my body started to mature and I’m only 22. Trust me, there’s a lot more physical development to come. In future, I’m only going to punch even harder.’

Tennyson’s 17 fight slate lists just 47 rounds and – despite Irish and Celtic title experience – he is yet to venture past session eight. Nevertheless, he is confident that a long and decorated career in the amateur code will help address the shortfall.

He explains: ‘I had my first amateur bout at Becketts Bar in Lisburn in 2001, aged 7!

‘As a wee kid I had a real bad temper so my ma took me to the Poleglass boxing gym to knock it out of me. It worked the trick, calmed me down.

‘Starting out, I was just a rough kid swinging shots but I progressed to win five Ulster titles, five Antrim titles, three All-Irelands plus multi-nations golds at international level. I had just over a hundred bouts and only lost 12.’

But after coasting to eight wins (seven quick) and the Irish super-feather title during his initial nine months punching for pay, our ‘Assassin’ was alarmingly rubbed out inside two rounds by Mansfield based Latvian Pavels Senkovs (previously triumphant in just two of 71!)

James recalls: ‘First round I was actually boxing beautifully then second round I got caught. I’m not sure whether it was with a punch or a head but I went over. The ref called it a slip but, to be honest, I was all over the place. Pavels tagged me again and the ref jumped in.

‘Defeat took quite a while to sink in. My career was going along just great then ‘Boom’! I had a taste of the treatment I’d been dishing out and it wasn’t nice. But there were positives that came from it. I became even more motivated and changed in every way – physical, mental, psychological – to prevent ever having that feeling again.’

Eight subsequent wins and the acquisition of the Celtic title courtesy of a seventh round disqualification against Scotland’s two-time Commonwealth challenger Kris Hughes have consigned the shocker against Senkovs to the distant memory bank.

And despite the concession of home turf, Tennyson was bursting with youthful exuberance ahead of his British title gig at the Copper Box on Saturday.

‘I’m actually really looking forward to coming over to the mainland and showing Frank Warren, the English fans and BoxNation viewers what I’m all about,’ says Tennyson who has been priming himself at the Belfast Kronk gym.

‘I boxed in places like Azerbaijan and Portugal as an amateur plus Estonia, Hungary and Scotland as a pro so I’ll not be at all fazed.

And while the battle-hardened champion is clearly more seasoned, the Ulster hope predicts his greater physicality and firepower will see him coronated.

‘I’ve watched a few of Ryan’s fights and he’s a very worthy champion, picks his shots lovely, doesn’t waste much,’ he concludes.

‘I suppose Walsh will start a big favourite but anything can happen in the sport of boxing. There’s been plenty of upsets before.

‘Recently Ryan was fighting down at super-bantam while I’ve won titles up at super-feather. I expect to be the bigger man in the ring and intend to make that pay for me.

‘No doubt there’ll be times when we box and times when we open up and ‘war’. Either way, I can mix things up. The fans will definitely get their monies worth.

‘I’m not coming to London to see the sights. I’m coming to take the British title.’

Giovani Santillan (19-0, 10 KOs) Extends Unbeaten Mark on “Path to Glory”

ORANGE, Calif. (April 24, 2016) – Junior welterweight Giovani Santillan (19-0, 10 KOs) remains unbeaten after thoroughly out performing the taller Jose De Jesus Macias (18-6-2, 9 KOs) over eight rounds on Friday’s “Path to Glory” main event.

Santillan dropped Macias in the second round with a counter right hook, and from that point forward, established the tempo required to defeat the lanky striker from Mexico.

“He had somewhat of an awkward style,” said Santillan, who is from San Diego. “But after I scored a knockdown in the second, plenty of angles opened up for me.”

Santillan, who came into this fight well prepared having sparred with Tim Bradley, moved well and appeared to grow stronger as the fight progressed.

“We trained hard for this fight,” said Santillan, who is 24-years-old. “I could have done better in a few rounds, but overall, I’m happy with my performance.

Official scores read: 80-72, 79-72, 78-73.

In the six-round co-feature, lightweight Jose Roman (22-1-1, 15 KOs) needed two rounds to dispatch Jose Angel Martinez (14-9-1, 9 KOs). Early in the second, the pair clashed heads, which led to both suffering cuts.

Roman shrugged off the bump, but Martinez was slower to his feet and Roman took advantage. He peppered Martinez with a wall of punches, knocking him out at the 1:06 mark of the second round.

In what was largely a technical fight, Carlos Carlson (21-1, 11 KOs), the No. 14 ranked bantamweight by the WBC, delivered another smooth performance by out boxing Giovanni Caro (23-18-4, 19 KOs) through six rounds.

Carlson, who fights out of Tijuana, Mex., frequently targeted the body with his power left hook. The routine body shots sapped the energy out of Caro, who is based in Mexico City, Mex. Carlson cruised to a unanimous decision win with scores 60-54 twice, 59-55.

In a good old-fashioned slugfest, featherweight Erick Ituarte (13-1-1, 2 KOs) of Santa Ana, Calif. used a relentless attack to stymie Fernando Fuentes (7-7, 1 KO) of Hemet, Calif.

In the first, Ituarte dropped Fuentes with a two-punch combination. Fuentes, for his part, never backed down from the free-throwing Ituarte. Ituarte, however, proved too accurate for the oft back-pedaling Fuentes. Official scores for Ituarte read: 60-53, 57-56, 58-55.

Lightweight Manuel Mendez (10-1-1, 6 KOs) earned a tougher than expected knockout win over stubborn veteran Jose Araiza (34-16-1, 25 KOs). Mendez, fighting out of Indio, Calif. and trained by Joel Diaz, hit pay dirt during the final minute of the fourth and final round. He power-punched the Mexico-based Araiza from corner-to-corner until referee Ray Corona halted the punishment at the 2:18 mark.

Opening the “Path to Glory” card were lightweights Cesar Villarraga (9-1, 4 KOs) of Colombia and Hugo Padilla (2-6, 1 KO) of Mexico. Villarraga dominated the four-round fight from start-to-finish by using superior hand speed and a stingy defense. All three judges scored the fight for Villarraga, 40-36.

“Path to Glory” was presented by Thompson Boxing Promotions and sponsored by Lucas Oil, in association with LATV Networks.

Thompson Boxing Promotions will celebrate sixteen years in the business with a show on Friday, May 20 from the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, Calif. A formal announcement will be released shortly.

Krusher Returns Home Kovalev to Face Chilemba in Russia July 11

Sergey Kovalev

Ekaterinburg, Russia:      The Russian Wrecking Ball, WBO, WBA and IBF Light Heavyweight World Champion, Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (29-0-1, 26 KOs) returns to his home country of Russia to defend all three of his belts against Isaac “Golden Boy” Chilemba (24-3-2, 10 KOs) on Monday, July 11 in Ekaterinburg. The fight will take place on the opening night of the International Industry Trade Fair “INNOPROM-2016” at the DIVS Palace of Sports and is sponsored by Russian Copper Company and Igor Altushkin and presented by Main Events and Krusher Promotions in association with German Titov Promotions.
Kathy Duva (CEO of Main Events), Nadezhda Pashnina (Kovalev’s Mother), Don Turner (Kovalev’s Cut Man), Sergey Kovalev, John David Jackson (Kovalev’s Trainer), and Egis Klimas (Kovalev’s Manager) Celebrate his Victory Over Jean Pascal in Jan.

Ranked as one of the top three pound-for-pound fighters in the world, Kovalev, 33, a native of Chelyabinsk, Russia has not fought in his home country since 2011. Sergey earned his WBO belt in 2013 when he knocked out then-undefeated champion, Nathan Cleverly, in Cleverly’s backyard of Cardiff, Wales. After three consecutive successful title defenses, all knockouts, Sergey faced the legendary Bernard “The Alien” Hopkins in 2014 and unified his WBO belt with the WBA and IBF belts. After his unanimous decision win over Hopkins, Krusher had three more successful title defenses, all knockouts, of his three unified belts, including two knockouts of former WBC Light Heavyweight World Champion Jean Pascal. This will be his first title defense in Russia.
According to Krusher, “I am so excited to fight in my home country of Russia. It gives me great pride to bring my titles home at last. I would like to thank my manager, Egis Klimas, my promoter, Kathy Duva and Igor Altushkin of Russian Copper Company for making this dream of mine a reality. Chilemba is a tough opponent and I will be ready for him on July 11.”
The challenger, 28, Isaac “Golden Boy” Chilemba, is originally from Blantyre, Malawi but now resides in Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa. Chilemba has quietly worked his way through the light heavyweight ranks and in 2015 he was offered opportunities from both the IBF and the WBC to fight for their mandatory positions. Isaac opted to face Eleider Alvarez, in Alvarez’s backyard, for a shot at the WBC title. Golden Boy suffered a controversial majority decision loss to Alvarez in November. This fight with Kovalev offers Chilemba a chance at the other three belts and an opportunity to vindicate that controversial loss.

Chilemba said, “First of all I thank God for the blessings and opportunities. I thank my manager, Jodi Solomon, for standing up for me whether I’m on the top or at the bottom. I thank Main Events for yet another opportunity for me to redeem myself and I thank my trainer Buddy McGirt for believing in me. I have met a lot of obstacles and every time I think I’ve got it right, I fall again, but I know my goals and I never stop following my dreams. When I received a call from Jodi regarding this opportunity, I was over the moon. I thank Sergey and his team for putting their titles on the line to face me, all I want to say to them is: they are in for a surprise, they gave the wrong guy an opportunity. I’ll work my ass off and I’m in to win it! Russia here we come!”
Kathy Duva, CEO of Main Events and promoter of both Kovalev and Chilemba, said, “I’m so happy that we are finally able to bring Sergey back to Russia to defend his titles in his home country for the first time. Many thanks to Igor Altushkin of Russian Copper Company for helping us make it happen. This is no easy fight for Sergey, though. Sergey wanted a challenging opponent for his return to Russia and someone who would help him prepare for Andre Ward in November, assuming he emerges with a win. Isaac Chilemba has the right style and came ‘this close’ to becoming the WBC mandatory contender. We, and many observers, thought that the scorecards easily could have gone his way. Fortunately, we are in a position to give Isaac his world title fight and the opportunity to become a unified world champion. This is a perfect situation for all involved and I can’t wait to go to Russia!”
The fight will be televised live in Russia by Channel One. Regarding television in the United States, Duva said, “Broadcasting sports events live from certain regions of Russia can be a challenge. HBO Sports is exploring carrying the event in the U.S. It’s too early to be definitive. We know they love Sergey.”

“Golden Boy Promotions has an established reputation in the boxing community as the premiere promoter able to create super-stars in the sport,” said Samuel Contreras and Joel Diaz, managers to Cesar Diaz. “Cesar is a future world champion and we know with Golden Boy at our side he will one day become a world recognized star.”

Some fighters are made in the gym. The 20-year old David Mijares was seemingly born into the sport. As Mijares’ father worked with legendary musician Bob Dylan, his pregnant mother visited the boxing gym and her water broke. David wasn’t delivered in the gym, but as he grew up, it was his second home and he would even put on gloves and do drills as a toddler. By the age of 12, he began competing, going on to compile a 57-12 record as an amateur. Among his accomplishments were three National PAL Championships, a 2015 Golden Gloves title, and a Bronze medal in the 2015 USA National Championships. Even more impressively, he did it all while excelling in his studies and even playing the Euphonium for the nationally-ranked orchestra at Santa Monica High School. Now, he is set to make his professional debut in the largest stage in boxing, opening the night as the first fight on the Canelo Alvarez vs. Amir Khan non-televised undercard.

From Aguacalientes, Mexico now calling Palmdale, Calif. home, Cesar Diaz is a decorated amateur with an overall record of 104-11. Winner of the 2012 Silver Gloves National Championship, the 2015 Adidas National PAL title, The Desert Showdown in 2009, 2013 and 2015, and several other tournaments, Diaz has defeated some of the top prospects in his weight class including 2016 United States Olympians Shakur Stevenson and Carlos Balderas, as well as Danny Gonzalez. In 2013, Diaz went to the Junior Olympic regionals and was champion in his weight class, but due to his citizenship, he could not move on to the nationals. Undeterred, Diaz continued to fight, win and impress, earning him a USA Boxing number three ranking in the 123-pound weight class. As his amateur career closes, he will enter the professional game after staying undefeated since 2013 in 29 of his fights since then.

GH3 Promotions signs U.S. Olympic Alternate Brent Venegas III

Brett Venegas III
Nutley, NJ (April 22, 2016) – GH3 Promotions is pleased to announce the signing of 2016 United States Olympic alternate bantamweight Brent Venegas III.

Venegas, 20 years-old of Sacramento, California had an outstanding amateur career that culminated in just missing the 2016 Olympic team.

“I am very excited to have someone like GH3 Promotions help me. I am looking forward to turning professional and get in those television bouts on Showtime,” Venagas.

Venegas started boxing at the age of 12 and comes from a family that has boxing deep in it’s roots. His grandfather was a referee and grandmother was a boxing official. His uncle is a former amateur boxer.

As a youngster, Venegas spent time in foster care before being released to his grandparents. After getting into some scraps in the schoolyard, Venegas’ grandmother took him to the boxing gym and that is where his career was consummated.

When asked about his fighting style, Venegas said, “I like to use my distance but I can adjust to any opponent. I can fight any style and I work very hard.”

Venegas is preparing for his pro debut that will take place on July 22nd and is looking for five fights in each of his first two years.

GH3 Promootions has had success with fighters in smaller weight classes such as Adam Lopez and recent signing LeRoy Davila. Venegas likes that his promoter has taken an interest in the Bantamweight and Super Bantamweight divisions.

“I appreciate that GH3 recognizes the talent of these divisions. I think we have more skills and make much more exciting fights then some of the bigger weights. The guys around these weight classes are very technical as well. My favorite boxer was Erik Morales growing up but I like a lot of fighters and watch a lot of fights so I try to pick up any thing that I can.”

In his spare time, Venegas sells cars.

“Keep an eye out for me. I am going to work very hard and showcase my talents when it is fight time.”

Said GH3 Promotions Vito Mielnicki, “Brett has a chance to be an excellent fighter for a long time. He has tremendous ability and he has a great work ethic. I want to keep him very busy and move him at a good pace just like the rest of our stable. We are looking at July 22nd for the pro debut and I look forward to a long and prosperous career for him.”

GH3 Promotions features undefeated Middleweight Antoine Douglas, Super Middleweight’s Jerry Odom & Ronald Ellis, undefeated Super Bantamweight Adam Lopez as well as Boxcino 2015 Jr. Middleweight Champion John Thompson, Jr., undefeated Welterweight’s Hector Frometa, Jerrell Harris, Arturo Trujillo & Keenan Smith, , Jr. Lightweight O’Shaquie Foster, Bantamweight’s LeRoy Davilla, Brett Venegas III & Super Middleweight Andrew Hernandez to the GH3 Promotions stable.

NEW HAVEN’S WILLIAMS STEPS UP TO FACE HARD-HITTING FLORIDA VET WOODS IN MAY 13TH WELTERWEIGHT SHOWDOWN

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (April 22nd, 2016) — Five months following his triumphant Twin River Casino debut, New Haven, Conn., welterweight Jimmy Williams returns to Rhode Island on Friday, May 13th, 2016 in his toughest test to date.

The undefeated Williams (10-0-1, 5 KOs) puts his record on the line in a six-round bout against St. Petersburg, Fla., veteran Manny Woods (15-4-1, 5 KOs), who enters on a two-fight win streak and has won five of his last six bouts dating back to 2013.

The Williams-Woods showdown, which will be fought at a catch weight of 150 pounds, is part of CES Boxing’s stacked fight card at Twin River Casino, headlined by the highly anticipated main event showdown between Providence, R.I., standouts Peter Manfredo Jr. and Angel Camacho Jr.

Tickets for May 13th are priced at $46.00, $66.00, $151.00 (VIP) and $201.00 (VIP) and can be purchased online at www.cesboxing.com, www.twinriver.com or www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 401-724-2253/2254 or at the Twin River Casino Players Club. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

The 29-year-old Williams, a former standout football player at Southern Connecticut State University, has won six consecutive bouts since the lone blemish on his record, a majority draw in 2013 against scrappy New Jersey vet Greg Jackson. He knocked out fellow Connecticut fighter Christian Lao in 2014 to win the state super welterweight title during his brief stint in the 154-pound division and later stopped hard-hitting Massachusetts vet Eddie Caminero in the fourth round of a scheduled six-round bout in February of 2015, earning himself the No. 7 spot that night on ESPN SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays of the Day.

A hand injury kept Williams on the shelf for nearly 10 months last year, but he returned triumphantly in December, shaking off the ring rust in a six-round unanimous decision win over Chris Gray.

Woods, also 29, began his pro career in 2009 with six consecutive wins, three of them knockouts. He faced fellow Floridian Inka Laleye twice in seven months, fighting to a majority draw and then stepping back into the ring with Laleye to compete for the vacant Florida State Super Welterweight Title. Woods rebounded from a loss to middleweight title contender Travis Scott in 2013 with three consecutive wins, including a knockout over 41-fight vet Tyrone Dowdy.

Nicknamed “Shake ‘Em Up,” the 5-foot-7 Woods is 2-0 in 2016 and recently earned his 15th win as a pro earlier this month by unanimous decision over tough Mexican challenger Elias Espadas.

The May 13th card is stacked with the top regional talent, including Camacho (15-0, 5 KOs), who steps up for the fight of his life against the Rhode Island icon Manfredo (40-7, 21 KOs), back for the first time since 2013 when he stopped Rich Gingras in what was supposed to be the final fight of his career.

Coincidentally, Manfredo and Camacho both appeared on the first boxing event held at Twin River back in 2007, nearly nine years to the date of their anticipated May 13th showdown; Manfredo starred in the main event, knocking out Ted Muller, while Camacho, 5-0, at the time, stopped Donnie Dukes in just under a minute and a half.

In addition to Manfredo-Camacho, undefeated Worcester, Mass., junior middleweight Khiary Gray (12-0, 9 KOs) defends his UBF Northeast Title against Fort Meyers, Fla., vet Quinton Willis (10-3-2, 5 KOs) in an 8-round bout, while undefeated Springfield, Mass., junior welterweight Zack Ramsey (7-0, 3 KOs) steps back into the ring for the first time since 2014 to face 20-fight vet Issouf Kinda (17-3, 7 KOs) of New York in a six-round bout.

In a fight that could steal the show, regional standouts Nick DeLomba (8-1, 2 KOs) of Cranston, R.I., and the undefeated Freddy Sanchez (7-0, 5 KOs) of Worcester face off in a 6-round bout for the vacant New England Super Featherweight Title. DeLomba is looking to rebound from a first-round knockout loss to Gledwin Ortiz in September while Sanchez returns to the ring for the first time in two and a half months after suffering a no decision against Antonio Fernandes due to an accidental head-butt and subsequent cut over his right eye.

Rivalries will renew May 13th in a highly anticipated rematch between Stoughton, Mass., super featherweight Travis Demko (4-0, 1 KO) and Mohamad Allam (2-1, 1 KO) of Holyoke, Mass. The two faced one another in September with Demko winning by unanimous decision in a 4-round bout. They will now settle the score May 13th in a 6-round bout.

Also returning to Twin River, unbeaten Framingham, Mass., lightweight Julio Perez (4-0) faces Providence’s Cido Hoff (0-0-1) in a 4-round bout, while two fighters from Worcester make their professional debuts. Kendrick Ball Jr., the son of Gray’s head trainer, Kendrick Ball, debuts in a 4-round super middleweight bout against Providence’s Tunde Odumosu, trained by Rhode Island’s Victor Fagnant. Also from Worcester, decorated amateur Jamaine Ortiz debuts in a 4-round super lightweight bout against Skowhegan, Maine vet Josh Parker (0-2-1).

Weimer makes its a perfect 10 with win over Figueroa

Jeter_Weimer Post fight
York, Penn. (April 22, 2016) – Back on April 9, Steve Weimer came back from a 39-month layoff with a four round unanimous decision over 73-fight veteran, Joseph Figueroa in Springfield, Virginia.

With the win, Weimer raised his perfect mark to 10-0 and the middleweight prospect from York, Pennsylvania is primed and ready to keep the momentum going.

“He was a tough guy, but I boxed him,” Weimer said of Figueroa. “I used my length and range to set up the right hand to score a knockdown in the first round. After the layoff, it was good to shake the rust off.”

“I kept my composure and fought my fight. I did exactly what I wanted to do. It was the perfect comeback fight.

There won’t be anymore long layoffs for Weimer as he is already preparing for his next outing, which is scheduled to take place on June 4th in Springfield.

“I am already back in the gym for June 4th. There are a few guys they are talking to and I am just preparing for whoever takes the fight.”

The fight was also a new beginning for Weimer as it was his first bout under the promotional banner of Jeter Promotions.

“Being my first fight under Jeter Promotions, it went really well. Tony Jeter is a smart guy and a good promoter. He focuses on me and I know he will get me the fights that I need to get me to where I need to be,” said the 26 year-old Weimer.

Said Jeter Promotions CEO, Tony Jeter, “Steve wants to fight anybody. He has the confidence to go along with his talent. I know if we bring him along the right way, he can do big things. The sky is the limit for him. He has all the intangibles that a promoter looks for that go along with his ability. He is every marketable and he can fight and I am just so excited to what the future has in store for Steve.”

I just booked his pro debut on April 23, 2016 on the Alvin Varmall, Jr. vs. Leo Pla undercard up at the Catskills. His style of fighting is aggressive and explosive. He will give his weight class some opposition“.

UPTON WANTS IRISH BELT FOR HIS GRANDAD

PAULY UPTON says he will dedicate the Irish title to a special someone should he defeat Terry Maughan in Northampton this Saturday night.

The unbeaten super-welterweight’s grandfather, Liam ‘Gills’ Upton was a leading amateur for the Emerald Isle during the 1950s and ‘60s and Pauly says he’ll give his all to make him proud.

“My granddad is getting older now so it would be nice to win that belt and take it down to him,” Pauly said. “I’m sure he’ll be thrilled to see the title and to have a professional Irish champion in the family.

“He boxed hundreds of times as an amateur and won most of his fights, but he never turned pro so I can’t wait to turn up on his doorstep with the title over my shoulder.”

With his younger siblings, Anthony and Sonny, also pressing towards title opportunities, Pauly admits there is some friendly rivalry, but he’s confident of becoming the family’s first titlist.

“We all have a bit of a laugh about it and there’s some friendly banter,” he said. “They want to be champions too so it’ll nice to the first.

“I’m the oldest and I was the first to make my debut so winning a belt first will be brilliant and I can’t see any reason why I can’t pull it off.

“Terry Maughan is obviously a good opponent and he’s got experience of boxing over ten rounds, but I’ve seen a clip on him on YouTube and I think I have the tools to beat him and take that belt home.”

Maughan and Upton top a quality bill.

Market Harborough’s Reuben Arrowsmith will be looking to extend his unbeaten start to life as a pro against Bolton’s Chris Jenkinson whilst fellow unbeaten prospect, Swadlincote’s Zach Parker, faces Lithuanian Vaidas Balciauskas.

Northampton duo Jamie Spence and debutant Drew Brown are also in action.

Spence takes on Czech Republic’s Daniel Bazo whilst Brown faces Halesowen-based road warrior Kevin McCauley.

Midlands Area super-welterweight champion Jason Welborn completes the card against Czech scrapper Michal Vosyka.

Tickets are priced at £30, £35 and £40 and can be purchased from any fighter on the bill or by calling 07718 324102.

WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION DEONTAY WILDER MEDIA WORKOUT QUOTES FROM NORTHPORT, ALABAMA

DEONTAY WILDER
NORTHPORT, ALA. (April 21, 2016) -Undefeated WBC Heavyweight World Champion Deontay Wilder hosted a media workout Tuesday at the Skyy Gym in Northport, Ala. as he prepares to become the first reigning American heavyweight champion to travel to Russia to defend his title.

In exactly one month, on Saturday, May 21, Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs), of Tuscaloosa, Ala., will put his world title on the line against mandatory challenger and native Russian, Alexander Povetkin (30-1, 22 KOs), in Moscow.

Here’s what Wilder said at his Media Workout day on Tuesday:

DEONTAY WILDER

(On his expectations going to Russia…)

“My expectation is, of course, to win. To come back with that victory for America. This is a big fight, not just for myself, for America. It’s like Russia vs. America. I’ve been getting nothing but positive feedback from fans all over. Even if they weren’t a fan of Deontay Wilder they are now for this very fight. Hopefully I can win them over to stay a fan of Deontay Wilder after this fight. I think it’s a great fight. I think it’s a great thing that we’re going over to Russia defending my title in somebody else’s backyard.

“Like I said before, it’s easier for me to fight here in American but that’s not what it’s all about to me. When I have a title that says the heavyweight champion of the world, I want to travel all over the world to defend my title. I’m living my dream, I’m getting an opportunity to do that with this fight. I’m looking forward to Russia and I want to tell Russia,’Here I come.’ ”

(What it means to be the first heavyweight champion to fight in Russia…)

“It means a lot. It makes me even closer to my faith. God doesn’t make mistakes in lives. He doesn’t make a mistake in my life, your life or anybody else. Things happen for a reason and they happen at the right time in your life. Things may not come when you want it, but when they come it’s right on time. The things that have been accumulating throughout my career, it’s been amazing. How I’ve been able to make history, beat other records, and continue to make history. It’s amazing. I just want to know what else he has in store for my life. If it’s continuously history being made, what’s next? I’m excited.

“I can’t wait to see how my life unfolds at the end of my career. What happens at the end of Deontay Wilder when it’s time for him to say I’ve done all I’ve done in this sport and I don’t want to do it anymore. I want to see how much ground I can cover for those that have come before me.”

(How you predict the fight going…)

“I predict the fight as being a punishment in the first round and then knocking him out. All heavyweights want to knock somebody out so we have to say we’re going to knock them out. This is the cream of the crop division. The heavyweights. The hard-hitters. The heavy hitters, as they say. When we step in that ring, nothing is acceptable but a knockout. And I’m looking to knock him out.”

(On if he’s reached his peak…)

“Not at all and that’s the scary part about it. I haven’t even reached my peak yet and I’m still learning on the way up. I want to always learn. Each and every fight brings experience to me. It brings something that I’ve taken away from that fight and that I’ve added to the next fight. Looking forward to being very crisp and very good in this fight and showing people a little bit more of what Deontay Wilder is capable of. Especially those who haven’t seen anything thus far yet, stay tuned to this fight. This is one you don’t want to miss.”

(On unifying the titles in the future…)

“Most definitely. I really feel when I say that I will be the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, I don’t just say it to say it, but I also feel it inside me, deep inside me that I will be the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world and add my name to the few undisputed champions that have come before me. My name will be placed in history on that. Why wouldn’t it? All the things I’ve done up to now, that will be the icing on my cake to be the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. I won’t stop, no matter how many hours I have to put in. No matter how many fights that I have to take. No matter how many countries I have to visit to defend my title. I will be the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.”

(On concerns about going to Russia…)

“I don’t have any concerns. I don’t let my brain sit back and think about if I don’t knock him out or are they going to rob me, or anything like that. I just don’t want my mind to be on that when I’m in a fight. I want to have a clear mind. I want to go in there and do what Deontay is capable of doing. Like I said, all things are in God’s hands and if it’s in his will for me to win, it’s going to happen. If not then, I don’t stop there. My legacy is not going to stop there. But I’m very confident in what I’m about to do and what I’m going to do, and we all know that if we knock him out then we don’t have to worry about that. So of course that’s going to be my priority on my list – to knock him out.”
