BACK-TO-BACK EVENTS AT THE COSMOPOLITAN OF LAS VEGAS SET THE STAGE FOR A BLOCKBUSTER WEEKEND

ufc_title-belt_206
Las Vegas – UFC’s December to remember will be highlighted by an unprecedented three-event fight week featuring some of the sport’s biggest stars. The action begins Thursday, December 10 as No. 6 strawweight contender Paige VanZant battles No. 8 Joanne Calderwood on UFC FIGHT PASS® in the main event of UFC FIGHT NIGHT®: VanZANT vs. CALDERWOOD. The following night No. 2 featherweight contender Frankie Edgar and No. 3 Chad Mendes serve as the marquee bout of The Ultimate Fighter®: Team McGregor vs. Team Faber Finale. Both events will take place at The Chelsea at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

The blockbuster weekend culminates Saturday night when the first featherweight champion in UFC history, Jose Aldo, and interim champion Conor McGregor, finally settle their differences in the main event of UFC® 194®: ALDO vs. McGREGOR.

Former lightweight champion Edgar (18-4-1, fighting out of Toms River, N.J.) looks to secure a shot at the title with a win in the five-round main event of The Ultimate Fighter Finale. “The Answer” is riding a four-fight win streak that includes wins over Mendes’ teammate Urijah Faber, Cub Swanson, UFC legend BJ Penn and Charles Oliveira. A win here would solidify his place as the No. 1 contender in the stacked 145-pound division. Mendes (17-3, fighting out of Sacramento, Calif.) looks to get back in the win column after a short notice loss to McGregor in July. With a full camp behind him, the Team Alpha Male standout is confident the result will be different and that he will leave the Octagon® in line for another shot at championship gold.

Setting the stage for Edgar and Mendes will be the much anticipated return of third-ranked lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov (22-0, fighting out of Dagestan, Russia), who looks to keep his perfect record intact when he meets No. 9 Tony Ferguson (20-3, fighting out of Ventura, Calif.). Ferguson is coming off back-to-back Performance of the Night victories, and he hopes to climb into the top five of the division by handing Nurmagomedov the first loss of his career.

To headline the first UFC FIGHT PASS card on American soil, VanZant (6-1, fighting out of Sacramento, Calif.) meets Scottish sensation Calderwood (10-1, fighting out of Glasgow, Scotland). VanZant, who is one of mixed martial arts fastest rising stars, will need to use her relentless attack to counter Calderwood’s dangerous striking in hopes of staying undefeated inside the Octagon and take one step closer to a shot at the title. With four wins by knockout – three in the first round, the Scot is the most dangerous opponent to date for the Team Alpha Male prodigy.

INSIDE TEAM FURY (PART 3)

BOLTON (21 SEPTEMBER) By Peter Fury: You can’t play down the importance of family.

Your family’s your family. There’s no changing it. It’s a bond like no other. If any one of your family had their little finger chopped off, it would impact you in some way. You’d feel it.

So, to have everybody comfortable and happy is a great thing for a fighter, especially one in Tyson’s position. He’s a wealthy man right now. He’s surrounded by family. Family is your blood – you care what happens to each and every one of them.

We’re a very close family, us lot. We care about each other. Yeah, we shout and we argue and we have our differences, but really, when the chips are down, you die for your family.

His dad being out of prison is a massive lift for us all, not just Tyson. It feels like a grey cloud over us has gone. We don’t have to think about what John might be missing or how he might be feeling. He’s home, he’s done his time and onwards we go.

We need peace of mind going into a fight like this. We need to be able to concentrate on the job in hand, rather than worrying about other things. We’ve got that.

As for training Tyson – a member of my family – it’s like second nature now. Tyson is very good. He never gives you lip. He just gets on with it and does what he’s told. We’re family – I want what’s best for him. It’s all about winning. We’ve got that relationship; we know what we’re doing and that’s it.

Being family makes it very easy. We live under the same roof and we’re used to being in each other’s company. We do everything together – eat, sleep, drink, laugh. There’s nobody making calls to the family because the family’s all here. We don’t miss each other during camp because we spend every day together.

Of course, you’ve still got to be professional. You’ve got to step back, see the flaws and work on things and get them right. When they’re not right, they’re not right. There’s no point holding something back because you’re scared of upsetting a loved one. If we don’t improve, as a team, we’re letting each other down. The good thing is, I’ve only got to speak once and they only have to hear the tone of my voice to know I don’t like something.

Also, because there’s only family in the gym, Tyson’s never put up there as any kind of role model or icon. He’s always just one of the lads. He’s no different. The outside world will see it differently, but we don’t. We’ve just got a job to do. Tyson is like the big brother in camp.

Every one of them in the gym is programmed to fight, though. Don’t forget, they’ve been doing it since they were six years of age. They don’t know anything else. They’ve never come across fear before. They’ve lived in a boxing gym all their lives. That’s the big advantage we have over a lot of others…

Tybura retains heavyweight title, M-1 Challenge 61 results

INGUSHETIA, Russia (September 20, 2015) – M-1 Challenge heavyweight champion Marcin Tybura retained his title, technically winning by first round knockout as challenger Ante “The Walking Trouble” Delija broke his leg, in tonight’s M-1 Challenge 61: Battle of Narts at Ingushetia, Russia.

Tybura (13-1-0, 4 KO/TKO, 5 SUB), fighting out of Poland, bounced back from a loss action in which he lost a Super Fight to M-1 Challenge light heavyweight champion Stephan Puetz by way of a third-round stoppage due to severely broken nose.

Against Russian challenger Delija (14-3-0, 14-3-o, 5 KO/TKO, 7 SUB) in M-1Challenge 61, Delija broke his lower leg when a kick was blocked by Tybura, who pounced on his fallen foe until the referee stopped the fight when he saw Delija’s grotesquely injured leg.

Three of the other four main card fights ended in decisions. In the co-feature, Antun “Killer” Racic (18-6-0, 0 KO/TKO, 13 SUB), of Croatia, halted Russian featherweight Alexey Nevzorev’s (9-2-0, 1 KO/TKO, 4 SUB) unbeaten M-1 record at 3-0, taking a unanimous decision.

In a pair of featherweights matches, both decided by unanimous decisions, Russian prospect Magomed Idrisov (6-0-0, 2 KO/TKO, 0 SUB) remained undefeated against Lithuanian veteran Sergej Grecicho (21-7-0, 2 KO/TKO, 15 SUB), while Ukrainian Alexander Panasyuk (6-1-0, 1 KO/TKO, 4 SUB) got the best of Russian Lom-Ali Nalgiev (3-4-0, 0 KO/TKO, 2 SUB).

Brazilian light heavyweight Carlos Alexander “Indio” Pereira (33-10-0, 22 KO/TKO, 9 SUB) was impressive in his M-1 debut, locking an arm-bar on late replacement Ruslan Zhemukhov (5-2-0, 0 KO/TKO, 2 SUB), of Russia, in the opening round.

Judges were needed in six of eight preliminary fights. Russian lightweight Ramazan Esenbaev (9-1-0, 2 KO/TKO, 2 SUB) and his countryman, welterweight Rustam Gadzhiev (6-3-0, 2 KO/TKO, 0 SUB), were unanimous decision winners, respectively, over Kazakh-native Damir Ismagulov (4-2-0, 3 KO/TKO, 0 SUB) and Ukrainian Vyachseslav Ten (10-5-2, 4 KO/TKO, 6 SUB).

Split-decision victors were Russian welterweight Maksim Grabovich (2-0-0, 1 KO/TKO, 0 SUB), who ruined Adam Elmirziev’s (0-1-0) professional debut, and Elmar Mamedov versus Ruslan Esmurziev (3-1-0, 2 KO/TKO) in a battle of Russian featherweights.

Russian light heavyweight Akramat Evkurov (5-1-0, 1 KO/TKO, 1 SUB) used an arm-bar in his first-round submission win against Ukrainian Sergey Kutsy (2-3-0, 1 KO/TKO, 1 SUB). Russian heavyweight Murad Ismailov (5-0-0, 5 KO/TKO) went 5-for-5 with 5 KO wins in his young pro MMA career stopping Evgeni Boldyrev (8-6-0, 3 KO/TKO, 2 SUB), of Ukraine, in the first round on punches.

RESULTS FROM INTERNATIONAL FIGHT NIGHT HOSTED BY NEW LEGEND BOXING AND DIBELLA ENTERTAINMENT

dbe_logo
Queens, NY (9/19/15) – On Saturday night, New Legend Boxing and DiBella Entertainment returned to Resorts World Casino New York City with another action-packed nine-bout card for the latest installment of the popular International Fight Night series, proudly sponsored by Nissan of Queens.

In the main event, cruiserweight contender Alex Guerrero, 198, of Salisbury, MD, was shockingly upset by Atlanta’s Brian Howard. A straight right stung Guerrero halfway through round one and had him on rubbery legs. Howard, 195¾, landed a few more right hands to deck Guerrero, who quickly arose to his feet and took an eight-count. He was unable to recover, however, and Howard pinned him against the ropes with a follow-up barrage, forcing referee Harvey Dock to stop the contest at 1:53 of the opening frame. Guerrero suffered his first defeat, dropping to 12-1 (6 KOs), while Howard is now 11-1 (9 KOs).

Alicia “The Empress” Napoleon, 156¼, Lindenhurst, Long Island, engaged Latasha Burton, 153¾, Independence, LA, in a fast-paced brawl for three exciting rounds. Napoleon repeatedly tagged her foe with overhand rights, but Burton’s ring savvy and experience allowed her remain competitive. Often when Napoleon would force her way inside, Burton was waiting to launch her right uppercut. However, Napoleon’s constant pressure began to wilt Burton, who could not come out of her corner for the fourth round, resulting in a TKO verdict. The official time of the stoppage was 3:00 of round three, as Napoleon kept her perfect record intact at 4-0 (4 KOs), while Burton’s dropped below the .500 mark to 4-5.

Brooklyn fan-favorite Julian Sosa, 143½, earned his third pro victory, scoring a four-round unanimous decision over Las Vegas resident Jorge Soto, 146½, with three identical cards of 40-36. Now 3-0-1 (1 KO), Sosa staggered Soto with his straight right in round one and followed up by banging way at the body. Though he showed heart, Soto, 0-4, was hurt by every meaningful punch Sosa threw from then on out.

Irish southpaw Noel Murphy, 152½, used offensive bursts of combinations to quell the game plan of his crafty opponent Mack Babb, 151¾, of Jamaica, Queens, over the course of four hard fought rounds. Feinting Babb to create openings, Murphy often pressured his foe to the ropes and unloaded barrages. Babb’s best moments came when he was able to counter Murphy’s aggression with stinging straight rights. With scores of 40-36, 39-37, and 38-38, Murphy upped his record to 4-0 (2 KOs) winning a majority decision, while Babb fell to 1-6. The 21-year-old Murphy was a two-time National champion in his native Ireland before relocating to Yonkers, NY.

Brooklyn junior welterweight prospect Wesley Ferrer, 140¼, improved to 10-0 (5 KOs) after outpointing Luis Rodriguez, 143½, of Carolina, Puerto Rico, over six rounds. Ferrer snapped Rodriguez’ head back with a straight right in round one and continued to use that weapon throughout with success. The judges tallied 60-54 twice, and 59-55, all for Ferrer via unanimous decision. Rodriguez’ record dropped to 3-6 (2 KOs). In addition to winning the 2009 and 2013 New York City Golden Gloves championship and competing at the National Golden Gloves as an amateur, Ferrer was the 2012 New York Amateur Boxing and New York City Metro Tournament champion.

Over six frames, Bronx southpaw Chris “Golden” Galeano, 157¾, was very accurate with his punches, blasting the granite-chinned Colby Courter, 157½, with powerful hooks and stiff jabs. Galeano just could not miss as the brave Courter continued to come forward and eat whatever leather was heaped his way. A cut was opened over Courter’s left eye in the third. When Galeano shifted his attack downstairs, Courter did show signs of fatigue. In the sixth and final round, referee Vic De Wysocki felt that Courter had taken too much punishment and mercifully halted the action at the 1:08 mark, awarding Galeano, now 9-0 (1 KO), the first stoppage victory of his pro career. Courter, of St. Joseph, MO, dropped to 8-7 (7 KOs). Galeano won nearly every major competition during his amateur career, culminating by winning the 2013 NY Golden Gloves and 2013 165-pound USA National Championship, propelling him to a #1-ranking in the US.

In his DBE debut, the newly signed Canadian middleweight Steve Rolls, 161¼, of Toronto, expertly outboxed Tyi Edmonds, 161½, Meridian, MS, backing him up with a stiff and consistent jab. In round three, Rolls upped his offense, landing left hooks and overhand rights when in close. Edmonds, who tired down the stretch, was just not active enough, as Rolls went on to win a unanimous decision after eight dominant rounds. The judges tallied 80-72 twice, and 79-73, all for Rolls, who upped his record to 12-0 (6 KOs). Edmonds is now 5-3 (3 KOs). Rolls had a very successful amateur career, competing on the 2009 and 2010 Canadian National boxing teams, compiling an impressive 83-14 record in the process.

Landing counter hooks and straight rights, Brooklyn’s Marlon Brown, 145, worked hard to keep the aggressive Evincii Dixon off of him. Dixon, 145, of Lancaster, PA, did find the mark on occasion to which Brown proved to have a sturdy chin. Brown attempted to outbox Dixon over the second half, but Dixon’s pressure never waned. All three scorecards read 39-37 for Brown, who improved to 5-0 (2 KOs) by way of unanimous decision. Dixon’s record fell to 5-10-1 (2 KOs).

Dominican amateur superstar Carlos Adames, 148, now living in Brooklyn and training out of the famed Gleason’s Gym, demolished Rasheed Olawale Lawal, 146, Ventura, CA, inside the opening round to improve to 3-0 (2 KOs). Displaying very quick hand speed, Adames backed Lawal to the ropes and threw a series of flurries to the body to bring down his foe’s guard. Overhand rights to the temple followed and Lawal slowly fell to the canvas for a full count. The knockout came at the 1:52 mark. Lawal is now 1-2-1.

Skoglund retains IBF Intercontinental title in historic homecoming fight

Erik Skoglund (23-0, 11 KOs) retained his IBF Intercontinental Light Heavyweight title tonight in Nyköping, Sweden with a comprehensive points victory over Oleksandr Cherviak (15-5-1, 5 KOs).

The show signalled the return of big-time boxing to Sweden, with Skoglund’s fight being the first over championship distance since Jimmy Ellis defended the World heavyweight title with a controversial fifteen round decision over Floyd Patterson in September 1968.

In front of a sell out crowd of 5,232 people, the 24 year-old Swede delivered, continuing his world title charge with a dominant display against the tough Ukrainian.

Cherviak attempted to upset the hometown fighter in the early rounds, but Skoglund soon found his rhythm, and took control of the bout. In round five, Skoglund looked close to stopping the 34 year-old, pushing him back on to the ropes and landing heavy shots to the head and body.

The final round started at a frantic pace, as Skoglund, roared on by his loyal supporters, looked to bring the contest to a premature end, but Cherviak dug deep and was able to take the fight to the judges’ scorecards. After twelve entertaining rounds, Skoglund was ahead 120-108, 120-108 and 119-109.

‘’It was a fantastic feeling to be able to fight and defend my title on Swedish soil,’’ said Skoglund. ‘’It really was a historic night, and I want to thank everyone who came out and supported me. I love each and every one of them.

‘’It was indescribable to walk into the arena to such an amazing reception. It’s the best audience I ever had, and probably the best I will ever have. I’m proud to fight in front of these people, and to represent Sweden and Nyköping on such a big stage. This was a gigantic step forward for me and for Swedish boxing.

‘’Cherviak was tough, as I expected him to be, but I stuck to my game plan and I got the job done. He is a good boxer, but I was clearly the better boxer with the better tactics.’’

Cherviak, who more than played his part in evening’s action, was humble in defeat, admitting he had a loss to a superior opponent.

‘’Erik is a very talent boxer,’’ said Cherviak. ‘’And he has a lot of experience for someone of his age. He made it difficult for me, and executed his game plan well. He was the better man on the night. Obviously, I’m disappointed, but I’m thankful for the opportunity, and I wish Erik every success in the future.’’

Promoter Nisse Sauerland admits he was blown away by the support shown for Skoglund from the Swedish fans, and believes the young fighter has a bright future ahead of him.

‘’What a spectacular show,’’ said Sauerland. ‘’The fights, the fans, the atmosphere – nothing could have gone better. This was a great advert for boxing, and the perfect night to announce the return of boxing to Sweden. Erik was sensational, he shows a maturity far beyond his years. No doubt about it, we are looking at a future super star.’’

In an undercard stacked with talent, the Swede’s shone brightest. Anthony ‘Can You Dig It?’ Yigit proved why he is one of the most exciting fighters in Europe with an action packed eight-round unanimous points victory over former EBU-EU title challenger Chaquib Fadli.

‘’It was an entertaining fight,’’ said the Stockholm fighter. ‘’Fadli is a tough guy. He belongs with the best in Europe, but so do I. It was wonderful to box in Sweden, nothing beats boxing at home. The audience here were simply fantastic.”

Further down the card, heavyweight hope Otto Wallin scored an impressive points victory over former Russian Champion Vladimir Goncharov, Sven Fornling overcame his Norwegian opponent Simen Smaadal, who absorbed a lot of punishment, with a one sided points victory, amateur star Hampus Henrikkson starting his pro career in style with a first-round KO win over Ivan Sakic, Simon Henriksson claimed his fourth victory against Jakub Horvath (UD4), and Johanna Rydberg outworked her Russian opponent Evgeniya Zablotskaya to remain undefeated (UD4).

MARVIN QUINTERO IS THE NEW VACANT NABF LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE CHAMPION WITH TKO VICTORY OVER JEFFERY FONTANEZ IN A MEXICO VS. PUERTO RICO BATTLE AT SPECIAL EDITION OF LA FIGHT CLUB

LOS ANGELES (Sept. 18, 2015) – The September 18 special edition of LA FIGHT CLUB on Boxeo Estelar on Estrella TV was a celebration of Mexican Independence Day as Marvin “Cachorro” Quintero (28-6, 24 KOs) secured a technical knockout victory over Jeffery Fontanez (16-2, 12 KOs) in the main event at the Belasco Theater for the vacant NABF Lightweight Title.

The latest installment of LA FIGHT CLUB also attracted top names in entertainment including retired two-time world champion boxer Fernando Vargas; TV and radio personality Don Cheto; singer Luis Coronel; Pepe Garza; and “The Golden Boy” himself, Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. They were joined by Golden Boy Promotions’ future world champion fighters and top prospects including Joseph “Jojo” Diaz Jr., Christian “Chimpa” Gonzalez, Julian “El Camaron” Ramirez, Jason Quigley, Abraham “Chamaco” Lopez, Angel Bojado, Everton Lopes, Johnathan Navarro and Joshua Franco.

The Fontanez vs. Quintero battle thrilled the crowd with its action as a classic Mexico vs. Puerto Rico rivalry, with the Quintero win exciting fans and extending the Mexican Independence Day celebrations from earlier in the week. Quintero knocked Fontanez down twice in the fifth round, showcasing exceptional power. Fontanez answered the count on both occasions, but after absorbing several hits, Fontanez’s corner ended the fight giving Quintero the technical knockout victory.

“It is very satisfying to have gotten a big win in the name of my country and add a win for Mexico against Puerto Rico. I feel proud of the work I have put in, my left hand was a big weapon for me tonight. This win is for the people of Mexico,” said Quintero.

“I knew Quintero was a very experienced fighter and because of that we trained hard to prepare. It was one of the best training camps of my career. I knew I was ahead on the cards but he threw a lucky left in the fifth round that I couldn’t recover from. It was just a lucky shot but I have respect for him [Quintero] as a fighter,” said Fontanez.

In the co-main event of the evening, newly minted Golden Boy Promotions fighter Carlos “The Solution” Morales (12-1-3, 6 KOs) faced the tough O’Nell Negron (11-2-2, 87 KOs) of Puerto Rico in a scheduled eight-round super featherweight bout. An even match in the beginning, Morales dominated the action landing his jab and straight right regularly. Negron absorbed Morales’ shots and continued to exchange with Morales, but after a series of unanswered blows, the referee stopped the fight in the seventh round. Morales secured the first victory via technical knockout for Mexico of the night, in another action-packed addition to the classic Mexico-Puerto Rico rivalry.

“I trained very hard and couldn’t be prouder to add a win for Mexico in the great rivalry. He was a tough fighter. He kept coming forward, but I was able to land my jab and straight right and really focused on working the body. I think my intelligence and variety of attack made a big difference in the fight,” said Morales.

“I had seen some tape of him before in a previous fight and I thought he was slower but today he surprised me with his speed. He kept me at a distance and I was unable to work the body like we planned. In the thirdor fourth round I felt like I hurt him but he was too fast and continued to counter keeping me at a distance. My dream doesn’t end here. If there is another chance to fight him, I would take it. I feel the fight was exciting and the people enjoyed it. We both won in giving the people a great fight,” said Negron.

In the first televised bout of the evening on Boxeo Estelar on Estrella TV, Oscar “El Jaguar” Negrete (11-0, 3 KOs) boxed brilliantly in the ring against Jose Estrella (14-8-1, 10 KOs) in an eight-round super bantamweight bout adding another technical knockout victory to his record. Negrete used movement and speed to land quick, accurate shots on Estrella throughout the fight. By the sixth round, Negrete’s quick hands and clean shots forced Estrella’s corner to stop the fight.

“Our strategy was to box in the early rounds and wear him down for a late knockout. He was standing straight up so I was able to catch him a lot with the straight right. I want to fight one or two more eight-round bouts then move up and fight for a title. I feel very confident after tonight’s performance.” said Negrete.

As part of The Ring TV’s live stream, newcomer Hector “El Finito” Tanajara (2-0, 1 KO) took on Antonio Martinez (3-5, 3 KOs) in a four-round lightweight bout and secured the second win of his career by unanimous decision. Tanajara calmly placed his shots, showing excellent combinations as well as patience in his attack. All three judges ruled the fight in favor of Tanajara by scores of 40-36.

“I knew I was in control throughout the fight and was looking to take him out. My jab was an effective weapon when I used it and I think had I used it more, it would have been a shorter night,” said Tanajara.

Los Angeles prospect Emilio Sanchez (10-0, 7 KOs) held onto his undefeated status with a win over Juan Sandoval (7-17-1, 4 KOs) of San Bernardino, Calif. in a six-round featherweight fight also part of The Ring TV’s live stream. Sanchez stalked Sandoval from the start, throwing powerful shots to the body and the head. Sanchez’s shots caused serious swelling on the eye of Sandoval forcing the referee to stop the bout after the second round, awarding Sanchez a technical knockout victory.

“I felt really good throughout the fight. Our strategy was to break him down, throwing hard combinations to the body and I felt I did that really well. I am pleased with the improvements I’ve made and look forward to getting back into the ring,” said Sanchez.

Francisco Esparza (1-0)of Las Vegas made his professional debut against Carlos Gonzalez (1-8) of Bell, Calif. with a unanimous decision in a four-round lightweight bout. The bout picked up right where the previous fight left off, seeing both fighters trade punches in the center of the ring at a frenetic pace. Esparza fared better in the exchanges, landing the harder shots and backing up Gonzalez with all three judges scoring the fight 38-36.

“Hearing the crowd cheer, hearing my name called with the victory, these are the moments I have worked for my whole life. He [Gonzalez] was a tough fighter. He kept coming forward but I’m a brawler. I love that type of up close and physical fight,” said Esparza.

Opening up The Ring TV’s live stream, Alejandro “Popo” Salinas (3-1, 3 KOs) of Youngstown, Ohio battled Oscar Duarte (3-0-1, 2 KOs) of Parral, Mexico in a four-round lightweight battle. Providing fireworks from the start, the two fighters traded shots from the opening bell. Duarte showed his power midway through the second round, dropping Salinas with a left hook. Salinas showed tremendous heart, meeting the count and continuing to battle. The competitive fight ended with a split decision victory in favor of Oscar Duarte.

“I felt good throughout the fight. My coach and I worked on making sure my combinations were sharp and I felt very strong. I felt my left hook was my best punch tonight. I was able to drop him with that shot and hurt him with it a couple of times during the fight,” said Duarte.

Doors opened at 5:00 p.m. and the first bout began at 5:30 p.m. The Estrella TV broadcast aired live on Friday, September 18 at 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT, and The Ring TV undercard live stream began at 8:30 p.m. ET/ 5:30 p.m. PT.

Camacho stops Gingras to capture light heavyweight title

LINCOLN, R.I. (Sept. 18th, 2015) – What was billed as the Fight of the Year in the northeast way before the first bell rang lived up to the billing Friday night as undefeated Angel Camacho Jr. stopped Rich Gingras in the eighth round of their main event bout at Twin River Casino to capture the New England and Universal Boxing Federation (UBF) International Light Heavyweight Titles.

The win extended Camacho’s unbeaten record to 15-0 with 6 KOs while Gingras – fighting for the first time in a year – dropped to 15-5-1. It was no doubt the biggest win of Camacho’s career, chopping down the gritty Gingras at the 1 minute, 57 second mark of the eighth round and ending a back-and-forth, see-saw battle worthy of all the pre-fight hype and accolades.

The scheduled 10-round main event was the headliner of CES Boxing’s “Mayhem” card. Using his height and reach to his advantage, Providence’s Camacho got off to a fast start, out-boxing Gingras and effectively circling his opponent to score early and often.

Once he solved the distance factor, Gingras, hailing from nearby Lincoln, began to close the gap and pound away at Camacho’s body, fighting back in the middle rounds to pull closer on the scorecards.

The tide turned when Gingras suffered a nasty cut over the left eye, which impaired his vision. He tried to fight through it – twice, in fact, with the ringside physician’s blessing – but Camacho began to take advantage in the seventh before closing it out in the eighth with a series of combinations that forced referee Joey Lupino to stop the fight.

Aside from the thrill of the highly anticipated main event, the night belonged to Worcester, Mass., junior middleweight Khiary Gray (9-0, 6 KOs), who his extended his first-round knockout streak and won his most impressive fight to date, stopping Texan Kenton Sippio-Cook (6-3) at the 2:02 mark of round No. 1 to capture the vacant UBF Northeast Title.

Gray came out swinging, landing early and often against the overwhelmed Sippio-Cook, who eventually hit the canvas courtesy of an overhand right and never made it back to his feet. Gray has now won each of his last six fights – all this year – by first-round knockout, an impressive streak that began in January when he stopped Jake Constant with a body shot at 1:20 mark.

Looking to carry the momentum from his big, come-from-behind win over Juan Rodriguez in July, Nick DeLomba (8-1) returned Friday to face fellow undefeated welterweight Gledwin Ortiz (3-0, 3 KOs) from the Bronx. The tall, rangy Ortiz pulled off the upset on the road, stopping DeLomba and handing the Cranston, R.I., native his first career loss via knockout at the 2:43 mark of the opening round.

Unlike his last fight, when he got up off the canvas and rebounded to win by knockout, DeLomba failed to survive an early knockdown Friday. With wobbly legs, DeLomba tried to gain his composure, but the relentless Ortiz continued to unload and finished DeLomba with a flurry of rights and lefts in the corner, forcing Lupino to stop the bout.

In an early candidate for Fight of the Night, Massachusetts junior welterweights Travis Demko (4-0) of Stoughton and Mohamed Allam (1-1) staged a back-and-forth, four-round war with Demko narrowly winning on all three scorecards, 39-37. Demko’s footwork and ability to stick and move kept Allam at bay, but Allam finally found his rhythm in the later rounds, cutting off the ring and temporarily slowing the pace of the fight. Demko’s work in the early rounds turned out to be the difference as he earned the win in his CES debut.

Worcester, Mass., junior welterweight Freddy Sanchez (6-0, 5 KOs) made quick of work of Boston’s Rafael Francis (0-6), stopping Francis at the 1:55 mark of the second round. Sanchez and Francis fought a year ago in Francis’ professional debut with Sanchez winning narrowly by a majority decision. This time, Francis didn’t have enough in the tank after agreeing to take the fight on 48 hours’ notice when Sanchez’s original opponent, Lazar Stojadinovic, withdrew due to illness Tuesday.

Also making his Twin River debut, New London heavyweight Cassius Chaney (4-0, 3 KOs) cruised past Maryland’s Alando Pugh (1-6-1), who was forced to quit due to a left shoulder injury at the 1:21 mark of the opening round.

WELTERWEIGHT HOTSHOTS TIMOTHY BRADLEY AND BRANDON RIOS CLASH IN A FIRECRACKER FOR WBO WORLD TITLE EXCLUSIVELY LIVE ON BOXNATION

Timothy Bradley
LONDON (18 September) – The scintillating showdown between reigning welterweight world champion Timothy Bradley and the all-action Brandon Rios will be screened exclusively live on BoxNation on November 7th.

The pair collide at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas in an explosive contest for Bradley’s WBO title that is guaranteed to have fight fans on the edge of their seats.

The ‘Channel of Champions’, BoxNation, through their exclusive output deal with leading promoters Top Rank, will once again bring boxing lovers another thrilling clash to add to a mightily impressive upcoming schedule.

BoxNation has already confirmed a host of live fights including Miguel Cotto’s superfight with Canelo Alvarez, Lucas Matthysse against Viktor Postol, the meeting between knockout kings Gennady Golovkin and David Lemieux and next Saturday Frank Buglioni’s world title shot against champion Fedor Chudinov.

The meeting between two-time champion Bradley and former world champion Rios fits in nicely to the stacked BoxNation schedule, with both men having fought in Fights of the Year in 2013 and 2012, respectively, as they look to end this year on a similar high.

“I am excited to get back into the ring on November 7th against a very game and very dangerous Brandon Rios,” said Bradley. “I know that Rios is dedicated to giving the fans what they pay for and so am I. I guarantee you that the Thomas and Mack Center will once again deliver a great event.”

“We’ve been looking for a big fight and at last we have it. I’ll be ready,” Rios said.

“If I was going to come back to train a fighter, it was going to be one who had shown character in and out of the ring just like Tim Bradley,” said Teddy Atlas, Bradley’s new trainer.

“Fighting for the world welterweight championship is the most important thing in this fight plus I know Rios and Bradley will give the fans one of the best fights of the year. Both Bradley and Rios are warriors and will give the fans what they want to see. Thanks to Team Bradley for taking this fight. Let’s go out and give Southern California a fight that fans will never forget,” said Robert Garcia, chief trainer for Rios.

Also on the fight card will be one of boxing’s rising superstars with two-time Ukrainian Olympic gold medalist Vasyl Lomachenko defending his WBO featherweight world title against top-ten world-rated contender Romulo Koasicha of Mexico.

Jim McMunn, BoxNation Managing Director, said: “This is a really exciting clash to add to the busy BoxNation schedule over the next few months. We are very pleased to bring BoxNation subscribers top fight after top fight and Timothy Bradley against Brandon Rios has the potential to steal the show from what is a jam-packed calendar of live world class matchups on the channel. We always aim to deliver the very best fights around at the best value so are delighted to do that once again through our exclusive output deal with Top Rank.”

‘UNITED WOULDN’T BE TOO HAPPY IF I LACED THEM UP AGAIN’ – WAYNE ROONEY TALKS EXCLUSIVELY TO BOXNATION AS HE BACKS LIAM SMITH AHEAD OF WORLD TITLE SHOWDOWN

LONDON (18 September) – Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney says his club wouldn’t be best pleased if the former amateur boxer was to lace up the gloves again.

The 29-year-old was speaking exclusively to boxing channel BoxNation ahead of his friend and fellow Liverpudlian Liam Smith’s world title showdown next month against John Thompson.

The super-welterweight ace is taking on the American Thompson at the Manchester Arena on October 10th, with England’s all-time leading goalscorer recalling his fighting days and saying the Old Trafford club wouldn’t be too happy if he was to return to the ring.

“My uncle runs a gym in Liverpool I used to go there from the age of 9 until I was 15. It was great, I really enjoyed it, but Everton made me stop and I had to choose between boxing and football but I think I made the right decision,” Rooney told BoxNation.

“I used to go round to different gyms sparring which I really liked. It was quite easy in the end to choose football because that’s what I always wanted to do but I really missed going to the gym because I used to go every Monday, Wednesday and Friday after football.

“It’s difficult to box now so when I get a chance, when I’m coming back from injury or during the summer when I’m off, I always try and do a bit which is great to keep me fit. “I don’t spar – I don’t think United would like that. There was a bit of me on the internet doing some but I try not to do it,” Rooney said.

The Red Devils frontman, who is set to return from injury this weekend as his side pay a visit to Southampton, spent timeout this week recuperating alongside Smith at Amir Khan’s gym in Bolton.

Smith’s brothers were also lending their support to 27-year-old sibling Liam ahead of his title hunt, with Rooney on hand to give his backing and believing he will be the first of the famous four to claim world glory.

“We’ve seen Paul have world title fights and now Liam, so I’m sure their parents must be very proud,” said Rooney.

“Hopefully Liam can be the first to get that world title. I think John Thompson will be a difficult fight because he’s quite tall and is difficult to hit if you don’t get inside him. It will be tough but we believe that he can do it and bring a world title back to Liverpool.

“[Roy Hodgson] won’t let me take time out of England duty but I’ll certainly be watching it on television and I’m sure Liam will be at his best. I’m really looking forward to it,” said Rooney.

The former Everton man has also revealed who he regards as the best fighter in history, with the recently retired Floyd Mayweather topping his list.

“It’s difficult because you’ve got [Muhammad] Ali, [Mike] Tyson, but I have to say Floyd Mayweather.

“My favourite fighter growing up was always Tyson – I think it’s a shame what happened to him in his personal life and the fights he took at the end of his career but I think Mayweather is a different class.

“It didn’t look like Manny Pacquiao was 100% ready for the fight with Mayweather and we all know how good Ricky Hatton was and he dispatched him incredibly – so those are two standout Mayweather performances for me.

“It will be a shame if he doesn’t box on and get to 50 fights unbeaten. I’m sure with the money he gets for his fights he will box on,” Rooney said.

Tickets for Liam Smith v John Thompson are available from frankwarren.com or watch live on BoxNation (Sky 437/490HD, Virgin 525, TalkTalk 415, online or app) for only £12 a month. Visit boxnation.com.

Feigenbutz headlines hometown show against De Carolis on October 17

German KO specialist Vincent Feigenbutz (20-1, 19 KOs) headlines a hometown show on October 17 at the dm-arena in Karlsruhe, Germany against Italian Giovanni De Carolis (23-5, 11 KOs).

The 20 year-old has taken the super middleweight division by storm since turning professional in December 2011, claiming twenty victories including nineteen knockouts, and winning the interim WBA belt in the process.

To reward his efforts, ‘Iron Junior’ takes top billing on October 17, giving him a chance to showcase his devastating knockout power in front of his home fans in the South German town.

‘’At last I get the chance to fight at home and headline my first big show,’’ said Feigenbutz.‘’It’s a dream come true! I will repay the trust my promoter Team Sauerland and their TV partners have shown in me with a great performance on October 17.’’

Coach Hans-Peter Brenner is expecting a tough test for his young protégé. ‘’De Carolis is a tough customer,’’ said Brenner. ‘’He pushed Arthur Abraham over twelve rounds and gave him some problems. Vince must be well prepared. Therefore an intensive training camp is necessary and we will return to the mountains of Slovenia.’’

‘’We’re delighted to be staging an event in Karlsruhe,’’ said Sauerland Event General Manager, Frederick Ness. ‘’Many years after Sven Ottke and Regina Halmich, we return with another big boxing event. The name Vincent Feigenbutz stands for great entertainment and he is sure to deliver against De Carolis.’’

Feigenbutz’s manager Rainer Gottwald is particularly proud that the fight has been brought to Karlsruhe. ‘’There is huge demand for this event,’’ said Gottwald. ‘’Vincent has worked hard and attracted a lot of attention with his spectacular KOs. He is no longer far away from the world’s elite and he will prove this on October 17.’’

Also in action will be 17 year-old super middleweight Leon Bauer (3-0, 3 KOs), who having started his professional with three KO victories, is hoping to follow in Feigenbutz’s footsteps.

‘’Vince is leading the way,’’ said Bauer, who will face Serbian veteran Aleksandar Jankovic (10-36, 8 KOs). ‘’After only three years, he is already at the top of the world rankings, and that is where I want to be one day.’’

Further undercard announcements will be made shortly. Tickets for the October 17 show in Karlsruhe are available via tickethall.de and eventim.de.

HEADING FOR SURGERY IN MORNING, LARA FURIOUS WITH DIRTY TACTICS OF OPPONENT ROJAS

With plastic surgery to repair his badly damaged eyes scheduled for tomorrow in Mexico, and his entire boxing career in jeopardy, featherweight contender Jorge “Pilon” Lara (27-0, 19 KOs) says the opponent that caused the damage, Puerto Rico’s Jesus Rojas, should be banned permanently from boxing.

24-year-old Lara took on Rojas last Tuesday (September 8) in the co-feature of a Fox Sports 1-televised night of PBC Boxing from the Hollywood Palladium in Hollywood, California, and was forced to settle for a six-round technical draw after repeated headbutts from Rojas tore deep cuts over both his eyes. Lara suffered a bad cut on his left eye in round three and his right in round five. At the conclusion of round six, he indicated to referee Jack Reiss he was no longer able to see.

Under California rules, the fight went to the scorecards and was declared a draw when all three judges turned in scores of 57-57.

“He doesn’t deserve an opportunity for a rematch and should have his license revoked,” said a still furious Lara. “This kind of behavior from a fighter is not good for boxing. I came to fight this guy and he fought like a coward. He came only to win with dirty tricks and fouls.”

Lara says even if the surgery goes well he will be out a minimum of six months.

“He did the same thing in his fight against Jorge Arce in 2012,” continued Lara. “He can’t punch hard with his fists, so he uses a third fist that has no glove on it. And the fact that he got away with a technical draw and his headbutts were called accidental after he did over and over is disgraceful.”

Lara is scheduled to see Plastic Surgeon Dr. Adrian Corona Macias in his hometown of Guadalajara.

“I have worked so hard to get where I am in boxing and I hope the dirty tactics of one fighter don’t cost me my dreams.”

Making the move from prospect to contender, Joseph “JoJo” Diaz Jr. has been a steady performer who impresses every time he steps between the ropes. This year, the former member of the 2012 U.S. Olympic boxing team has taken his game to the next level with wins over Juan Luis Hernandez, Giovanni Delgado and Rene Alvarado, and with another victory on October 23, the 22-year-old southpaw will be knocking on the door of the top ten of the featherweight division.

A seasoned fighter of Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, Mexico, Ruben “Canelito” Tamayo will be looking to impress in his second fight of 2015. The 26 year-old has had a chance to fight some of the best in the division, including a run in with Jesus Marcelo Andres Cuellar for the interim WBA Featherweight World Title and former world title Jesus “Estrella” Ruiz. Now, the featherweight fighter will be looking to add a victory to his resume and proving that he is still in the title game when he faces Joseph Diaz Jr. on Oct. 23.

A stellar amateur who won the 2009 United States Championship and earned a Silver medal in the 2009 World Championships, East LA’s Frankie “Pitbull” Gomez turned professional in 2010 and he has been on a mission ever since then. Owner of 12 knockouts in three rounds or fewers, Gomez can also box when he wants to, as shown in his near-shutout victory over longtime contender Vernon Paris in his most recent bout in July of 2014.

Hard-hitting Tijuana native Jorge “Pantera” Silva went through a rough spell after a 17-1-1 start to his professional career, as he battled the likes of Joshua Clottey, Alfredo Angulo, Pablo Cesar Cano and Alan Sanchez. But the 23-year-old got back to his winning ways in July with a fifth-round technical knockout of Juan Carlos Moreno, and he’s looking forward to his showdown with Gomez and introducing the “Pitbull” to the loss column for the first time.

Hailing from Boyle Heights, Angel Bojado his career in the sport at the young age of four, following in the footsteps of his brother former Mexican Olympian and youth champion Francisco “Panchito” Bojado. Since then, Bojado has been on a path to success competing in numerous amateur tournaments like the Desert Showdowns, Blue and Gold’s, National PAL Championships, National Silver Gloves Championships, the National Junior Olympic and many more, accumulating more than 130 bouts. In his professional debut, Bojado is eager to cement his own legacy in the sport.

24-year-old welterweight prospect, KeAndre Gibson, who now makes his home in Las Vegas, has become quite popular in Texas, where he won impressive victories over John Nater and Jose Hernandez. In January, Gibson took on Nicaragua’s Nelson Lara winning the fight via unanimous decision. In his second fight of 2015, Gibson faced Jorge Ramos in an eight round fight winning the bout via unanimous decision in the undercard of Canelo-Kirkland on May 9.

NEW LEGEND BOXING AND DIBELLA ENTERTAINMENT HOST INTERNATIONAL FIGHT NIGHT

New York, NY (9/17/15) – This Saturday night, New Legend Boxing and DiBella Entertainment (DBE) will host International Fight Night, live from the beautiful Resorts World Casino New York City, in Queens, NY.

Headlining the card, in his DBE debut, will be world-rated cruiserweight contender (WBC #13) Alex Guerrero (12-0-1, 6KO’s) putting his undefeated record on the line against once-beaten Brian Howard (10-1, 8KO’s) in the 10-round feature bout of the evening.

Also making his DBE debut on the card will be undefeated middleweight prospect Steve Rolls (11-0, 6KO’s) as he takes on Tyi Edmonds (5-2, 3KO’s) in an eight-round middleweight matchup. The Canadian-native Rolls had a very successful amateur career, competing on both the 2009 and 2010 Canadian National boxing team, compiling an impressive 83-14 record in the process.

Looking to make it a perfect 4-0 in 2015 will be the Bronx’s Chris Galeano (8-0) as he squares off against hard-hitting Colby Courter (8-6, 7KO’s). The undefeated 22-year-old prospect Galeano won nearly every major competition during his amateur career, closing out his campaign career by winning the 2013 NY Golden Gloves and 2013 165-pound USA National Championship, propelling him to a #1-ranking in the US. The soon-to-be college graduate Galeano has shown steady improvement with each outing and will be looking to impress when he takes on Courter in their six-round middleweight showdown.

Fellow NY Golden Gloves champion Wesley Ferrer (9-0, 5KO’s) will look to move into double-digit victories when he takes on Luis Rodriguez in their six-round lightweight matchup. The Brooklynite Ferrer was an outstanding amateur. In addition to winning the 2013 New York City Golden Gloves championship and competing at the National Golden Gloves, Ferrer was the 2012 New York Amateur Boxing and New York City Metro Tournament champion and 2009 Golden Gloves champion. Ferrer is quickly becoming one of the more popular up-and-coming prospects throughout the NYC area, and a raucous crowd is expected to once again be on hand come Saturday night.

Fast-rising female middleweight prospect Alicia Napoleon (3-0, 3KO’s) will look to keep her perfect knockout ratio intact when she squares off against Latasha Burton (4-4) in their four-round contest. The hard-hitting Napoleon is coming off a 19-second demolition over Natalie King in her last bout in July and will be looking to continue her streak when she takes on Burton, who has never been stopped.

Dominican amateur superstar Carlos Adames (2-0, 1KO’s) is also set to see action when he squares off against Rasheed Olawale Lawal (1-1-1) in their six-round welterweight matchup. Now living in Brooklyn and training at the famed Gleason’s Boxing Gym, Adames has shown tremendous ability. A gifted boxer with lightning speed and devastating power, Adames will be looking to impress once again when he takes on the Nigerian-native Lawal.

DiBella Entertainment’s latest Irish-charge Noel Murphy (3-0, 2KO’s) will also appear on the card in a four-round welterweight matchup when he squares off against Mack Babb. The 21-year-old Murphy was a two-time National champion in his native Ireland before relocating to Yonkers, NY. Murphy has shown vast improvement through just three fights thus far in his pro career and is quickly developing a rabid fan-base amongst the large Irish fan-base here in NYC.

Brooklynites, Marlon Brown (4-0, 2KO’s) and Julian Sosa (2-0, 1KO) (1-0, 1KO) will all see action on the card in separate four-round bouts. Brown is set to square off against Evincii Dixon while Sosa squares off against Jorge Soto.

Tickets are priced at $125 ringside, $75 reserved seating and $50 general admission. Tickets may be purchased by calling Resorts World Casino New York City at (718) 215-2828 or by visiting the Casino box office. Tickets may also be purchased at the door on the night of the fight. Doors open at 6 p.m. with the first bout scheduled for 7 p.m.

Said promoter Nisse Sauerland: ‘’On Saturday night we’re making history. There has been a lot of work going on behind the scenes to make this a reality. Now, it’s Erik’s time to shine. He has the potential to become Sweden’s next big boxing superstar!’’

IGOR SVIRID TO DEFEND ONE MIDDLEWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE AGAINST VITALY BIGDASH IN MAIN EVENT OF ONE: TIGERS OF ASIA

17 September 2015 – Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: The largest sports media property in Asian history, ONE Championship™ (ONE), in partnership with Alienware Malaysia, is set to deliver fans in Kuala Lumpur another exhilarating night of world-class mixed martial arts action on 9 October, featuring the absolute best in local and international talent. ONE Middleweight World Champion Igor “Lionheart” Svirid will now headline the spectacular fight card in Kuala Lumpur as he defends his title against Vitaly Bigdash. ONE: TIGERS OF ASIA will also feature three Malaysia Super Fights as Ann Osman takes on Irina Mazepa, Ev Ting battles Honorio Banario and Peter Davis duels Adrian Pang.

CEO of ONE Championship™, Victor Cui, stated, “You can always count on ONE Championship’s dedication to the city of Kuala Lumpur. We’ve prepared a memorable night of adrenaline-pumping thrills for fans here and all across the world headlined by an explosive world championship title fight! Witness all the action live as the best local and international MMA fighters compete inside the ONE Cage. Fans will not want to miss what goes down on 9 October!”

In the Malaysia Super Fights, Malaysia’s fighting belle, Ann “Athena” Osman, is back and ready to rock Kuala Lumpur once again in her highly-anticipated return to the ONE Cage. Working to constantly improve her overall MMA game, Osman has been deep in training on the coastal locale of Kota Kinabalu. She will get the chance to show off her new moves against Russian kickboxer, Irina Mazepa.

Irina Mazepa is making her debut inside the ONE Cage a memorable one by taking on one of the female flyweight division’s best fighters. A six-time Wushu world champion and a K1 world champion kickboxer, Mazepa’s devastating striking skills will be put to the test against Ann “Athena” Osman.

Ev “E.T.” Ting’s most recent fight was against tough Russian foe Marat Gafurov, in one of the most valuable learning experiences for the 26-year old Auckland MMA product. Ting is currently 3-1 inside the ONE Cage and will now look to get back in the winner’s circle in front of his hometown crowd with a victory over Filipino stalwart, Honorio Banario.

Honorio Banario of the famed Team Lakay in Baguio City, Philippines, is back and ready to show fans exactly what he’s been working on in the past few months since his last fight. An expert in Wushu, Banario will showcase his lightning quick strikes against Malaysia’s own, Ev Ting, in a featherweight showdown that promises to electrify the arena.

Always a mainstay in Kuala Lumpur fight cards, lightweight standout Peter Davis is unbeaten in ONE Championship when fighting in Malaysia’s capital city. Davis is currently on an incredible four-fight win streak which includes one submission and three straight TKO wins. His next test is certainly one that will push him to the limit as he takes on the veteran from Queensland, Australia, Adrian “The Hunter” Pang.

Lightweight veteran Adrian Pang was impressive in his ONE Championship debut last December against Vincent Latoel. His submission via Guillotine Choke showcased his ability to grind against a tough opponent and come through with a technical victory. Pang continues his stellar career against one of Malaysia’s most popular stars in and out of the cage, Peter Davis.

Top featherweight Eric “The Natural” Kelly of the Philippines will make his much awaited return to the ONE Cage after a year off from competition. His last bout was an unforgettable scrap against Rob Lisita, one that resulted in Kelly taking home the first ever ONE Warrior Bonus in a masterful performance. Standing in Kelly’s way on his road back to the top is Hiroshige Tanaka.

Japanese MMA standout Hiroshige Tanaka made his ONE Championship debut last year against Herbert Burns. He is 10-2 in MMA and has been working on improving his game for the past year. Tanaka gets a chance to showcase his explosive progress against one of the division’s finest in Eric Kelly.

Japanese MMA wildcard Riku Shibuya won the hearts of fans in his battle with ONE Flyweight World Champion, Adriano Moraes, just a few months ago. Shibuya’s unorthodox style and powerful combinations were on full display, and now, fans in Kuala Lumpur will get to see Shibuya once again as he takes on the equally unpredictable Eugene Toquero of the Philippines.

Eugene Toquero is one of the most exciting fighters to come out of Manila and has impressed with a solid 7-1 MMA record. The former celebrity MMA trainer’s only loss came against fellow countryman Geje Eustaquio, but he’s been unstoppable since. Toquero’s time inside the ONE Cage has been memorable, as he’s delighted fans with impeccable striking and flashy combinations. His flyweight clash against Riku Shibuya should be one for the books.

Dae Hwan Kim challenged for the ONE Bantamweight World Championship in his last fight, but came up short against reigning champion Bibiano Fernandes. Despite the setback, Kim gave the champ all he could handle and delighted fans with his fast-paced, high volume attack. Kim’s striking prowess is virtually unmatched in the division, and it will be interesting to see how effective he’ll be against one of China’s top MMA prospects, Teng Li Ge in Kuala Lumpur.

Fighting out of Xian, China, Teng Li Ge has a background in Sanda. Born in Inner Mongolia, he embodies what being a true warrior is all about. He has the heart, will and possesses the tenacity to overcome obstacles and claim victory. Teng Li Ge will be making is ONE debut in Kuala Lumpur and he is prepared to show the world that he can beat the highly regarded Dae Hwan Kim.

22-year old prospect Gianni Subba has gotten some great wins under his belt, and has scored two stoppages in his most recent bouts — one by submission and one by impressive KO. Subba is one of the most promising young fighters on ONE Championship’s roster and will look to continue his win streak against Evolve MMA grappler Marcos Ratinho.

Despite just recently debuting as a professional mixed martial artist earlier this year, Evolve MMA instructor Marcos Ratinho is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion and has all the tools necessary to be a force inside the ONE Cage. He’ll have to dig deep into his bag of tricks however if he wants to upset rising star Gianni Subba.

Popular Malaysian fighter Saiful “The Vampire” Merican is 2-2 inside the ONE Cage and has proven his mettle early in his career by figuring in some tough bouts against worthy competitors. The young flyweight has good all-around skills that will be put to the test against fellow Malaysian warrior, Melvin Yeoh.

Melvin Yeoh is proving to be a fixture in action-packed bouts in his home country. The veteran Malaysian athlete is showing off his consistency as a complete fighter featuring fast-paced striking and technical grappling. Yeoh is never in a boring fight and he will get the chance to electrify the crowd once more against Saiful Merican.

In a flyweight battle, Ruel Catalan of the Philippines takes on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and member of the Evolve MMA Fight Team, Almiro Barros, in a classic striker versus grappler matchup. The 27-year-old Filipino fighter is looking to get back on track with a victory against an opponent with a knack for submissions.

20-year-old Agilan “Alligator” Thani of Kuala Lumpur will take on Egyptian Top Team’s Hisham Hiba in a clash of welterweights. Thani, who is known for his solid ground skills will look to submit his kickboxer opponent in a collision between a striker versus grappler.

Malaysia’s Keanu Subba, the Featherweight Champion of the Malaysian Invasion Mixed Martial Arts (MIMMA) amateur series will make his professional debut when he goes head to head with Florian Garel of France in a three-round featherweight matchup to kick off ONE: TIGERS OF ASIA.

Camp Notes: Carlos Velasquez Talks Fortuna Clash on Fox Sports 9/29

LAS VEGAS, NV (September 16, 2015) – Less than two weeks away from his Tuesday, September 29 super-featherweight world title showdown against undefeated world champion boxer Javier “El Abejon” Fortuna (28-0-1, 20 KOs), Carlos Ivan Velasquez (19-1, 12 KOs) is gearing up for the fight of his life. He fights on Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) TOE-TO-TOE TUESDAYS headlined by Fortuna vs. Velasquez, a scheduled 12-round bout from The Pearl at Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas (9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT).

Velásquez was born in Cataño, Puerto Rico where he and his twin brother both competed in amateur boxing growing up. He was a member of the 2004 Puerto Rican Olympic boxing team, but also won the featherweight title at the Central American and Caribbean Games. Training out of Las Vegas, NV with esteemed boxing trainer Roberto Norris, Velasquez shares his thoughts on training camp, fighting for Puerto Rico and fulfilling his dream of becoming a world champion.

On fighting for the Puerto Rican fans in this first world title opportunity:

“I was born and raised in Puerto Rico and I love my countrymen and country. Becoming a world champion is something I’ve been working hard for my whole life. From coming up as an amateur and Olympian to now, I have dreamed about winning this title. The time has come to take my career to the next level. Being that this is my first world title shot, I’m fully prepared to show the world that I’m a great fighter and that I intend to bring the title back home to all my family, friends and fans on September 29th.”

On fighting undefeated world champion Javier Fortuna:

“Fortuna is considered one of the great fighters in the 130-pound division for a reason, he’s never lost. But he’s never been in the ring with a technical fighter like myself. He has a lot of flaws that we are going to expose.”

On his world title opportunity coming on FS1 & FOX Deportes:

“What can I say, I’m truly blessed to be fighting on PBC. FS1 and FOX Deportes are the new Tuesday Night Fight channels. TOE-TO-TOE TUESDAYS is great for the sport. I’m honored to be fighting in the main-event on a great network like FS1 and FOX Deportes. Boxing has now gone back to its glory days, and I’m ready to shine.”

On training with new coach Roberto Norris:

“I find myself in a comfortable position training with Roberto Norris, who is working great with the physical attributes that God has blessed me with. Being that Fortuna is a southpaw, a great game plan must be implemented, and Norris has a masterful strategy in place. The knowledge that Norris conveys is really making a difference in my approach. I’m confident I’ll be able to dictate the pace of the fight and negate anything Fortuna tries to impose.

On working with strength and conditioning coach Ángel “Memo” Heredia:

“Angel Heredia is one of the best strength and conditioning coaches in boxing. With all the work we’ve done, I’ve never felt stronger going into a fight. His techniques are second to none. My stamina will be at peak performance when I step in the ring. In addition, Memo brings a lot of experience to my corner.

Back in America, Chambers gearing up for run at Heavyweight title

Eddie Chambers
Atlantic City, NJ (September 16, 2015)– This Friday night at the Claridge in Atlantic City, former world Heavyweight title challenger, Eddie Chambers will be fighting as a Heavyweight in the United States for the first time in over three years when he takes on Galen Brown in the 8-round co-feature on a card promoted by King’s Promotions.

The show will be headlined by another 8-round Heavyweight bout that will pit Travis Kauffman (29-1, 21 KO’s) taking on Epifanio Mendoza (41-21-1, 35 KO’s).

Chambers of Philadelphia, challenged for the Heavyweight championship of the world in 2010 when he was topped by Wladimr Klitschko in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Since then, Chambers has been trying to get back to that lofty perch but a disputed loss to Tomasz Adamek and a loss to Thabiso Mchunu in Chambers’ one appearance at Cruiserweight seemed to impede his rise back to the top.

Chambers gathered himself and spent ample time in England to train in the camp of mandatory title challenger Tyson Fury and was able to win five straight (4 by knockout) in the United Kingdom.

Now he is back and focusing on once again being a top Heavyweight contender and earning another chance at Heavyweight glory.

“Everything is going pretty good. It has been a smooth transition coming back here,” said Chambers.

“When I went to England, I went with the intention of campaigning there and getting big fights over there. I learned a great deal of boxing, life and about myself from Peter Fury and the rest of the guys. I was creating a life there. I just want to come back here now but I do plan to fight in England again. They have knowledgeable fight fans and they really embraced me.”

Now back in the States, Chambers has inked up with Al Haymon and he feels that this is the right time to make another move in the Heavyweight division.

“Fighting close to home is a good situation to come back to. I have been able to train in familiar surroundings and I am just going to do my thing.”

In Brown, he is fighting a grizzled veteran who has fought 75 times and has taken on many former champions, title challengers and top contenders.

“He is a journeyman, but I respect all fighters. Anyone who gets in the ring, you must respect. He has fought 75 times and knows a lot of tricks and is awkward and unconventional.”

Chambers believes that he is close to getting back in position and it won’t be long that he is back fighting for the title.

“I am staying at Heavyweight. I want the bigger fights as soon as I can. I think because of my name, experience and ability, that opportunity will come sooner rather than later and I look forward to that. I want to thank my team and fans for the continued support and look for me to get back into a big fight real shortly.”

Also appearing in an 8-round bout will be Cruiserweight Keith Tapia (15-0, 10 KO’s) of Santurce, Puerto Rico taking on Anthony Caputo Smith (15-5, 10 KO’s) of Kennett Square, PA

Ivan Golub (8-0, 6 KO’s) of Brooklyn, NY will fight Pavel Miranda (19-10-1, 9 KO’s) of Tijuana, Mexico in a Super Welterweight bout.

In 6-round bouts:

Dauren Yuleussinov (3-0, 2 KO’s) of Brooklyn, NY fighting Justin Williams (4-10-2, 2 KO’s) of Beaumont, Texas in a Super Middleweight fight.

Danny Kelly (8-1-1, 7 KO’s) of Washington, DC will battle Jimmy Suarez (3-6, 3 KO’s) of Aguada, PR in a Heavyweight bout.

In 4-round Bouts:

Alex Barbosa (4-2-1, 1 KO) of Philadelphia, PA will fight Jose Garcia (0-4) of San Juan, Puerto Rico in a Featherweight contest

Pavlo Ishchenko of Brooklyn, NY will make his pro debut against Nicholas Rodriguez (0-2-1) of Somerset, KY in a Featherweight contest.

Tickets can be purchased for $100, $75 and $50 by clicking www.claridgeboxing.eventbrite.com or by calling call 610 587 5950 or 609 868 4243

SPOTLIGHT BACK ON AMERICAN HEAVYWEIGHTS HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION DEONTAY WILDER AND TOP CONTENDERS DOMINIC BREAZEALE AND CHARLES MARTIN LOOK TO SHINE ON UPCOMING PBC ON NBC CARD SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 26 LIVE FROM THE LEGACY ARENA IN BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA

Deontay Wilder
BIRMINGHAM, AL (September 16, 2015) – Next Saturday night, heavyweight world champion Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder (34-0, 33 KOs) will make his second world title defense in his home state when he takes on France’s Johann “Reptile” Duhaupas (32-2, 20 KOs) in the feature bout of the evening on Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on NBC live from the Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama.

In the co-main event, 2012 U.S. Olympian and undefeated heavyweight prospect Dominic “Trouble” Breazeale (15-0, 14 KOs) will enter the ring against the crafty “Big” Fred Kassi (18-3-1, 10 KOs) in a 10-round heavyweight showdown that kicks off the televised coverage at 8:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. PT.

Also being featured on the televised portion of the card, heavyweight knockout artist Charles “Missouri” Martin (21-0-1, 19 KOs) squares off against Vicente “Bufalo” Sandez (15-4, 10 KOs) in a 10-round heavyweight affair. The Martin-Sandez bout will be part of the NBCSN broadcast, which begins at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT.

“People are finally excited again about the heavyweight division,” said Wilder. “There are a lot of young guys coming up looking to make a name for themselves, like Dominic and Charles. For the first time in a long time, an American is the heavyweight champ and the title is staying right here. For the longest time, our division was THE division in boxing and now you are seeing a resurgence of that. Fighting on network TV gives us the opportunity to showcase ourselves to such a wider audience. People in our country have been waiting for a star in the division for a very long time, and I can promise you, I am the man for the job.”

Already a superstar in his native Alabama, Wilder has seen his popularity grow exponentially since winning a piece of the heavyweight crown in January of this year. Wilder made the first defense of his title in June in a stirring homecoming before a raucous sold-out crowd at the Bartow Arena in Birmingham. He knows that another spectacular performance on Saturday, with primetime TV exposure, will help bring back the interest of the every day sports fan to what was boxing’s most prized division.

The California-native Breazeale played quarterback at the University of Northern Colorado before picking up boxing and, like Wilder, making the U.S. Olympic team after a short amateur career. Breazeale is coming off his most impressive showing to date, a devastating third-round TKO over previously undefeated fellow knockout artist Yosmany Consuegra. Breazeale is looking to parlay his latest victory and show the world that he is ready to compete at the elite level of the heavyweight division when he makes his primetime TV debut on September 26.

“This is a huge opportunity for me to show the world that I am one of the best in the entire heavyweight division. Deontay has brought real life and real interest back to the division here in the U.S. We are here to show the world that we are the best that the heavyweight division has to offer and we are here to stay,” said Breazeale.

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, but fighting out of Carson, California, Martin has stopped his last 10 opponents within the distance. The 29-year-old was the 2012 National P.A.L. champion and 2012 National Golden Gloves runner-up before turning pro in October of that same year. Martin has kept a very busy pace throughout his barely-three-year career, and has already notched three victories this year alone. Like Wilder and Breazeale, Martin is excited about the opportunity to showcase his skills.

“I am excited that PBC is putting the spotlight back on the heavyweights and that it is giving us the opportunity to showcase ourselves to a much wider audience and fan-base. You have the three best American heavyweights in boxing all fighting on the same card, one of which is the heavyweight champion. It is something that you haven’t seen in many years,” stated Martin.
