MARIO BARRIOS STOPS TORRES IN 4 ROUNDS

SAN ANTONIO, TX (September 6, 2015) – Super-Featherweight phenomenon, Mario Barrios improved to (11-0, 6 KOs) with another sensational knockout, stopping his opponent Jose Cen Torres, at the 2:10 mark of round four. Leija Battah Promotions and Warriors Boxing promoted the event from American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, which aired live on Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on CBS.

In the opening round, Barrios used his height and reach to perfection, keeping Torres at bay with a powerful jab. Torres, who was running for dear life, did everything he could to survive. After dominating for the first three rounds, Barrios turned up the heat. In the round four, Barrios came out guns blazing, and landed a double left hook to Torres’ temple, followed by a bruising shot to the liver, ending the bout. With the win, Barrios sees himself as a force to be reckon with in the super-featherweight division.

“This was a good fight for me as I’m on my march for a world title,” said Mario Barrios. “I definitely want to get right back in the gym to start working on some things I know I can improve on. Because Torres was giving me a lot of movement, I had to make some adjustments. Once I figured him out, I know I was going to stop him. The super-featherweight division is wide open for me to march up the rankings. With Al Haymon guiding my career, I know I’m going to have some golden opportunities to shine. I’m looking forward to my next fight.”

“FAST” EDDIE CHAMBERS RETURNS TO THE RING ON SEPTEMBER 18 IN ATLANTIC CITY

Eddie Chambers
PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, U.S.A. – On Friday night, September 18, 2015, professional heavyweight boxer, “Fast” Eddie Chambers (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania/pro record: 42-4-0, with 22 KOs), returns to the ring against Galen “Bad Boy” Brown (St. Josephs, Missouri/pro record: 41-31-1, with 25 KOs) in an 8 round fight at the Claridge Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. In the main event, Travis Kauffman will face Epifanio Mendoza. Chambers’ fight card on September 18 is titled, “Rumble at the Claridge,” and is promoted by King’s Promotions.

Eddie Chambers discussed the current state of boxing’s heavyweight division. He said, “The heavyweight division is hot as it has been in a while. The Klitschko Era is coming to a close, with Vitali going into politics, and Wlad beginning to talk about retirement. That leaves a number of young, talented heavyweights, and overlooked veterans, such as myself, to fight for the top spots in the heavyweight division. There are going to be some great fights in the next few years as the new breed of heavyweights move into position.”
Chambers recapped the previous two years of his boxing journey. He said, “In 2013, I took some time off from boxing and went through a lengthy, self-evaluation period. During that time, I learned a lot about who I am, and had to forgive myself for some bad decisions that I’ve made in my career to date. At the beginning of 2014, I traveled overseas to the United Kingdom and trained with Team Fury. While I was there, I fought a few times on TV. My most recent fight was in November of last year in London. I traveled back to the United States earlier this year, and I put together a new boxing team. While I was in the UK, I met so many incredible people and I’m really glad that they continue to support me. The fans over there were very knowledgeable. I plan to fight over there again someday soon. Thanks to boxing trainer Peter Fury, I regained my confidence, learned new training habits, and added different elements to my fighting style. I continue to keep in contact with Peter and Team Fury, and they will be big influences in my success moving forward. Boxing trainers James Ali Bashir and Freddy Anthony Rodriguez have also contributed to my improved boxing IQ. For this fight, Coach Anthony will be working my corner.”
New Jersey-based boxing trainer, Freddy Anthony Rodriguez (It’s On! Boxing/MMA gym), also known as “Coach Anthony,” has been pleased with Chambers’ effort in preparation for this fight. He said, “Eddie has put in some quality sparring and training work so far, and he has shaken off some of the cobwebs that come with typical periods of inactivity. We know Galen Brown is a southpaw with lots of experience, he is light on his feet, and he throws punches from all different angles. Eddie is used to fighting bigger guys, and this time, he’s fortunate to be matched up with an opponent closer his size. Our local fans that haven’t seen Eddie in a longtime will be thrilled to learn that he’s fighting close to home. People forget Eddie has been overseas for a while. Fighting in Atlantic City is a great start to making him relevant in the heavyweight division again. For this camp, our focus has been keeping his punches sharp and accurate, maintaining his conditioning, all while keeping him defensively sound.”
The 33-year-old heavyweight talked about his upcoming fight with Galen Brown. He said, “Galen has a lot of fights and he’s an experienced professional. Guys with that many rounds under his belt can make a fight difficult, because they understand how to survive in the ring. There’s a reason he’s had a long career. I’m not going to take him lightly or any or any fighter for that matter. I’m going to prepare for him the same way I’d prepare for a championship level fight. His fighting style is tricky, and the way he throws punches is rather unconventional, but I’m aware of it, and I’ll be prepared for whatever he brings that night.”
Chambers is looking forward to fighting again on American soil in nearby Atlantic City. He said, “My last fight in America was in 2013, so it is great to be back. In 2011, I fought Derric Rossy in Atlantic City, and I was victorious. This is almost like a hometown fight for me. The Claridge Hotel is driving distance from Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, so I’ll have lots of support there that night. This fight coming up is another step to put myself back in title contention. Thank you Al Haymon, Marshall Kauffman of King’s Promotion, Sikaheart Photography, Max City Media Design, Ediroc, Faded Beard Clothing, Powerhandz, PSS Distribution Services, Johnny Ortiz, and my cutman, Vinny Scala.”
Tickets to Eddie Chambers’ fight at the Claridge Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, NJ, are priced at $100 (VIP), $75 (ringside), and $50 (general admission), plus applicable taxes and fees, and are on sale now by calling (610) 587 5950 or (609) 868 4243 or online at www.claridgeboxing.eventbrite.com. Weigh-ins on September 17 will be open to the public, and will take place on the 3rd Floor of the Claridge Hotel at 4pm ET. On fight night, September 18, the doors of the Celebrity Theater (located within the Claridge Hotel) will open at 6:00 pm, with the first fight scheduled for 7:00 pm. The Claridge Hotel is located at 123 S Indiana Ave, Atlantic City, NJ, 08401. Self-parking is $12, and Valet parking is $15. The Claridge Hotel phone is (844) 224-7386 or (609) 487-4444.

THE STAR STUDDED DEBUT OF LA FIGHT CLUB ON BOXEO ESTELAR ON ESTRELLA TV BROUGHT A NIGHT OF EXPLOSIVE FIGHTS TO DOWNTOWN LA

LOS ANGELES (September 4, 2015) – The Estrella TV premiere of LA FIGHT CLUB on Boxeo Estellar brought out some of Los Angeles’ most popular stars including George Lopez, Kate Del Castillo, Enrique Castillo, Ellen K, Ponce De Leon; Golden Boy Promotions fighters USNBC Lightweight Champion Vyacheslav “Lion Heart” Shabranskyy, Julian “El Camaron” Ramirez, Carlos “The Solution” Morales, Emilio Sanchez, Roy “Pit Bull” Tapia, Oscar “El Jaguar” Negrete, Nick Arce; and “The Golden Boy” himself, Oscar De La Hoya, CEO and Chairman of Golden Boy Promotions, who hosted a special meet and greet with fans ahead of the televised broadcast.

The night was full of explosive action as Diego De La Hoya (12-0, 7 KOs) took on former world title contender Jesus “Estrella” Ruiz (32-7-5, 21 KOs) in a 10-round featherweight bout for the vacant WBC Youth Super Bantamweight Title. Despite some hard shots landed by Ruiz, De La Hoya was able to showcase his movement, timing, speed, and power. De La Hoya moved and countered effectively, avoiding many of the hard shots thrown by Ruiz and masterfully capitalizing on the missed shots. De La Hoya won the bout via unanimous decision to become the new WBC Youth Super Bantamweight Champion.

“Movement was a big part of our plan to out box him and so we conditioned so that I could move effectively throughout the fight. I felt comfortable and calm and in control throughout the whole fight and I thought I landed some good uppercuts and really hurt him. Those were some of my favorite punches to throw,” said Diego De La Hoya following the fight.

“His distance and his movement made it difficult for me to execute my game plan, which was to outbox him and then eventually land a big shot. I was never hurt throughout the fight but he just outworked me and made it difficult for me to land,” said Jesus Ruiz.

In the co-main event of the night two undefeated rising prospects, two-time Brazilian Olympian Everton Lopes (4-0, 1 KOs) and Omar Tienda (13-1, 8 KOs) of Guadalupe, Nuevo Leon, Mexico went head to head in one of the most important fights of each other’s young careers. Lopes tasted that canvas twice in the bout in the face of the hard charging Omar Tienda’s attack. Lopes recovered to fight back and show his boxing skills, moving effectively and landing solid left hands from the southpaw stance. Lopes fought hard to earn a majority decision.

“Every fight is a learning experience. I learned a lot now I need to go back and work on what I didn’t do as well as I would have liked to do. This was my first time being knocked down but I felt I stayed calm and kept my distance and that was the difference in the fight,” said Everton Lopes.

“That was a robbery. My plan was to pressure him and not give him room to think. I think I did that effectively but I was robbed anyway,” said Omar Tienda.

Opening up the LA FIGHT CLUB telecast, undefeated local favorite Christian “Chimpa” Gonzalez (11-0, 9 KOs) had the crowd cheering him on as he took on Luis Lizarraga Jr. (5-6-1, 2 KOs) of Merida, Mexico in a scheduled six-round lightweight fight. Gonazlez dominated the fight early on delivering a devastating left hook to Lizarraga Jr. in the second round, winning the fight by TKO.

“That left hook is something we have been working on. I felt calm and relaxed throughout the fight, which helped me to land that shot perfectly,” said Christian Gonzalez of the fight.

For the first-time ever, viewers were able to tune in to a live stream of the three LA FIGHT CLUB undercard fights via The Ring TV’s Roku channel, www.ringtvlive.com and on The Ring TV’s YouTube channel. Part of the live stream, Ivan “Striker” Delgado (7-0-1, 2 KOs) of Los Angeles, took on Thomas Herrera (4-14-1, 1 KOs) of Tucson, Arizona in a six-round super featherweight brawl that had fans in an uproar. The bout featured an ebb and flow of action that saw both fighters landing hard shots but ultimately it was Delgado that was victorious, winning the fight by unanimous decision.

“I feel great after that win. He was a tough dude and he took some of my best shots so the key for me was to stay composed and focused and time my shots,” said Ivan Delgado.

Also featured on Ring TV’s live stream, Los Angeles favorite Rafael Gramajo (5-1-1, 2 KOs) impressed fans with his decision victory over fellow super bantamweight Adrian Rodriguez (1-7-1) of Guadalajara, Mexico. Gramajo landed repeated body shots

“This was my first six-round fight. I’d only done four-round fights previously. I had a tough opponent who didn’t back down, and we went toe-to-toe. I came to give the fans a show, and I did. Thank you Golden Boy Promotions for this opportunity,” said Rafael Gramajo.

And opening up the night, newcomer Jonathan Navarro (2-0, 1 KO) of East Los Angeles, continued his winning streak in his second professional fight against Santa Ana, Calif.’s Gibran Gutierrez (0-1), defeating Gutierrez by unanimous decision.

Navarro came out aggressive in the first round, swinging and landing body shots, knocking down Gutierrez twice. In rounds two and three, Gutierrez persevered and fought back but Navarro’s strength proved to be too much ultimately.

“My second professional fight felt good, and I’m glad I was able to get back in the ring so quickly after by debut. The fighter was tough-he definitely could take a punch. I know I went wild in the beginning of the fight, but once I dropped him the first time I knew I had him,” said Jonathan Navarro.

LA FIGHT CLUB: De La Hoya vs. Ruiz, was a 10-round bout for the vacant WBC Youth Super Bantamweight Title presented by Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Corona Extra. Doors opened at 5:00 p.m. and the first bout began at 5:30 p.m. The Estrella TV Viernes de Boxeo Estelar broadcast aired live on Friday, September 4 at 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT. The Ring TV live stream will began at approximately 5:30 p.m. PT through 7:00 p.m.

LA FIGHT CLUB is a monthly boxing series featured on the first Friday of each month, with upcoming shows including a special edition on Sept. 18, and on Oct. 2, Nov. 6, and Dec. 4. The boxing ring is set on the main floor of the Belasco Theater with on-camera standing room for fans in front of the ring similar to a concert pit, as well as reserved balcony and floor seats. SECA MAKES HUGE INVESTMENT TO BUILD CHINESE BOXING LEAGUE INTO A PREMIUM BRAND

SHANGHAI (September 4, 2015) — Chinese sports marketing/management company SECA has started a new Chinese professional boxing venture with Las Vegas-based boxing promotion company Top Rank. A new professional boxing league, League of Fists, will officially launch on September 4th.

Sophisticated System
“League of Fists is aiming to build a league that consists of high level boxing matches in order to provide Chinese boxers and boxing fans not only a sophisticated league system but also developing their boxing experience, as well as helping Chinese boxers compete on the international stage.” said Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum, CEO of Top Rank. For the past three years, Arum has been promoting world championship boxing events featuring Chinese boxers ZOU Shiming and YANG Lianhui. He has made a huge contribution to the development of professional boxing in China. These efforts have set a solid foundation in building up professional boxing in mainland China.

Both Top Rank and SECA acknowledge that there are many world class boxers in China. However, Chinese professional boxing lacks a systematic, scheduled, professional platform to allow more and more boxers to grow. As a result, the League of Fists was developed.

The league organizers, Top Rank and SECA, are planning to host two seasons of boxing matches, the first season kicks off on September 4th in the Shanghai Mercedes Benz Arena; the second season is scheduled to begin between March and August in 2016. Every season will be comprised of 23 rounds with 224 matches. There will be 46 rounds and 448 matches annually. Every new season will have 80 boxers participating in eight different weight classes with 10 boxers in every weight level. There will be two rounds during each week of the season, with 20 matches overall in four different weight divisions. The matches will take place on select weekends Friday and Saturday throughout the season.

Huge investment brings world class professional matches
League of Fists has employed world-class production teams. The promotion operations will replicate every production detail of a Las Vegas event. No detail in staging, lighting, sound and fan experience will be overlooked. The cost of the first season of League is expected to exceed RMB10million.

Additionally, League of Fists has forged a partnership with Shanghai Five-Star Sports, Tencent Sports and CCTV5, enabling full live coverage on TV, online streaming and mobile devices. It will also work with every major traditional media and social media to put on a multi-dimensional promotion to attract a wider fanbase.

WBO Points Certification
League of Fists will include Fists Fight and Fists of Power to form a complete series of matches with the name of the match being registered as trade mark. Boxers will compete with each other in groups (Fists Fight) producing a Final Four with the boxers in each weight division. They will then be in the crossover elimination matches (Fist of Power) to award a champion at each weight level. The champions will be awarded the WBO Greater China Champion by the World Boxing Organization, and they will have the chance to move on to fights in Macau and the USA. The 80 boxers’ results in each round will be calculated and then entered into the points and ranking system of WBO.

Yelieqiati, who paticipates in the first season of League of Fists, expressed that he felt extremely lucky to be one of the boxers selected to participate in the League of Fists. He always wants a prominent stage to show his talents and he wishes to be the champion on the platform of League of Fists.

WORLD TITLE THRILLER BETWEEN KNOCKOUT KINGS GENNADY GOLOVKIN AND DAVID LEMIEUX TO BE SHOWN LIVE AND EXCLUSIVE ON BOXNATION

Gennady Golovkin
LONDON (4 Sept) – As announced on ‘Bunce’s Boxing Hour’ one of this year’s most exciting fights has landed on BoxNation with knockout artists Gennady Golovkin and David Lemieux set to produce a spectacular showdown on October 17th.

The two world champions meet head-to-head in one of the most eagerly anticipated unification clashes in 2015, as they look to prove who is the best middleweight on the planet, live and exclusive on the world’s number one boxing channel.

Kazakh hitman Golovkin has risen to become among the most electrifying fighters around accumulating 30 knockouts in his 33 wins, picking up the WBA, IBO and interim WBC world title belts along the way.

However, up against an equally impressive banger in IBF world champion Lemieux, who has 31 knockouts from 34 wins, he will be tested like never before.

Fireworks are guaranteed when these two 160-pound all-action titans clash at New York’s iconic Madison Square Garden in a matchup that has ‘Fight of the Year’ written all over it.

“I’m very excited to face David Lemieux to prove who is number one in the middleweight division,” said Golovkin. “I look forward to fighting again at Madison Square Garden and putting on another Big Drama Show for my fans in New York City.”

“I’ve said that I don’t care who I fight, so long as they are the best, and Golovkin is the best out there in the middleweight division,” Lemieux said. “GGG may be the most feared man in boxing, but after October 17th, there will be a new feared man in the middleweight division. Two very powerful punchers are coming into the ring. There will be blood; there will be fireworks, and I am confident I will emerge victorious.”

The mouth-watering battle joins an already packed schedule on ‘The Channel of Champions’ BoxNation, who are also set to air pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather’s final bout against Andre Berto on September 12th.

BoxNation continually showcases the very best fights from around the world and in Golovkin versus Lemieux British fight fans will get the chance to see two fighters who each have a devastating knockout ratio of over 90 percent.

33-year-old Golovkin, who had a glittering amateur career, has stopped his last 20 straight opponents inside the distance while defending his title fourteen times, most recently in May of this year against Willie Monroe Jr in front of 12,000 fans at The Forum in Los Angeles.

The scintillating Lemieux is also coming off a highly impressive win after dominating the brave Hassan N’Dam over 12 rounds in June, scoring 4 knockdowns in the process, to set up a gripping meeting with the formidable Golovkin.

Joel Brunker Set to Flip the Script in England Tomorrow Night Against Unbeaten Warrington

Australian featherweight contender Joel Brunker says that all talk of his next opponent, undefeated Josh Warrington, facing current IBF Champion Lee Selby in an all-UK showdown will be moot when he hands Warrington his first defeat tomorrow night (Saturday, September 5).

Brunker (28-1, 16 KOs) from New South Wales will face hometown hero Warrington (21-0, 4 KOs) for the WBC International and Commonwealth (British Empire) Featherweight Championships at the First Direct Arena, Leeds, Yorkshire in the United Kingdom.

“The media over here keeps talking about Josh Warrington fighting Lee Selby next in an all-English showdown, but they aren’t focusing enough on what’s about to happen,” said Brunker. “I’m coming in tomorrow night to take Warrington out!”

Brunker’s only career loss was to Selby in October 2014. In his last fight, Brunker picked up the International Boxing Organization Oceania Super Featherweight Championship by dropping and stopping Ray Laspinas of the Philippines in two rounds last February at the Richmond Club in Richmond, New South Wales, Australia.

“What they should be getting ready for is my rematch with Selby because that’s what’s going to happen and this time I’ll be ready for him,” Brunker continued.

“They seem to be overlooking Joel somewhat over here and talking about the Selby fight as though it’s a foregone conclusion,” said Brunker’s co-promoter, Greg Cohen of Greg Cohen Promotions (along with Adam Wilcock of FightCard Promotions). “It’s a huge mistake on their part to overlook Joel because he’s coming in here to set up a rematch with Selby by beating this undefeated guy.”

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by Leija Battah Promotions and Warriors Boxing, are priced at $109, $93, $49, $38 and $15, not including applicable service charges and taxes and are on sale now. Tickets are available at www.ticketmaster.com, the American Bank Center Box Office or by calling Leija Battah Promotions at (210) 979-3302. To charge by phone call Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000.

Here is what the participants had to say Thursday:

ANTHONY DIRRELL

“Training was great. No complaints. It was a fantastic camp and all the hard work is done.

“I know Rubio is a great fighter. He’s fought the big names and he’s a great veteran. I’m excited to get in the ring with him.

“I was flat last fight. No excuses. Everyone has their days. You can’t pick and choose, it just happens. Anybody that knows me knows that I don’t fight like that. It’s in the past and I’m ready to fight Rubio.

“I did some more sparring earlier in the camp and that got me into a good rhythm. I’m sharp now and our plan has worked great. Now it’s just about bringing it to the ring on fight day and putting on a show.

“I’m looking to go out there and do what I do, which is send people to the doghouse. Whether it’s a statement or not, I just want the victory.”

MARCO ANTONIO RUBIO

“I have put all my effort into this training camp. We’re prepared to fight Dirrell. He’s tall, he’s strong and he’s very difficult in the ring. I have prepared the way I was supposed to. I love the challenge of a tough opponent.

“I was physically tired after my last fight after so many years in boxing. I always knew I would come back, because boxing is my life. I’ve been working for 5 months to get back in shape and I am in great shape.

“It was hard to make 160 for the last two or three fights. I left too much in the sauna to make weight. But now at 168 I feel great. This won’t affect my punching power. It’s something new that I’m looking forward to.

“I’ve had the right sparring partners this camp. I’m in good shape and I definitely have the right strategy for this fight.

“I am coming back at full strength. I see more big fights in the future. I feel great and ready to take on all other fighters.”

JAMIE MCDONNELL

“I’ve been working on some new techniques and I’m sure he will bring some new things to the table that I don’t expect, but I think I will be able to surprise him too.

“I’ve been working on sitting on my punches and creating more power, but also a lot of work on my movement. Defense is important because I got tagged with that right hand that knocked me down last fight.

“I just have to put it all together. On fight night it will come together in the ring. I’m feeling fit, the best I’ve ever felt.

“We’re looking forward to getting in there and making a statement this time. I want to make a real statement on the world stage. No close victory this time, I’m ready for the big boys.”

TOMOKI KAMEDA

“Everything in camp has been going well and we know that we will be successful on Sunday night.

“This time we have an even better plan than last time. I’m ready for my opponent’s style and anything he can bring to the ring.

“I’ve studied McDonnell and I know his weaknesses. We’re planning on taking him out this time. I won’t stop until I have the stoppage.

“I thought I won last time and I plan to prove that I am the better fighter and the best at my weight. It was very close, but this time my power and strategy will be too much for him.

“We didn’t get the win last time, but I’m lucky to have this opportunity just a few months later on national TV. It’s a big fight for me and I need to win.”

“I’m excited to be headlining this show. It’s a good kind of pressure and I’m ready for it,” said Williams. “I hope that my hometown of Philadelphia comes out to support me because I plan on putting on an electric performance. I have a lot of respect for Cuello, but I haven’t lost a round in eight fights and I plan on keeping that going.”

“This is going to be a great card and I am excited to be part of the PBC series,” said Marshall Kauffman of King’s Promotions. “I have admired Julian Williams since his amateur days and have always wanted to work with him. One of the most highly regarded young stars in boxing, Williams has spent 2015 staking his claim as a legitimate contender in the 154-pound division. He shut out longtime contender Joey Hernandez in April and followed that up with a sixth-round stoppage of Arman Ovsepyan in June. The 25-year-old from Philadelphia has also picked up victories over Joachim Alcine, Eliezer Gonzalez and Freddy Hernandez in his young career and looks to continue rising up the ranks at 154-pounds when he faces Cuello.

Born in Buenos Aires but fighting out of Madrid, Spain, Cuello has spent most of his pro career fighting in those two countries. He’s fought in the U.S. once in his career and hopes to make a mark on September 22. Winner of his first 22 pro fights; he won titles in South America with victories over Carlos Wilfredo Vilches and Samir Santos Barbosa. The 31-year-old enters this fight with three straight victories including a dominant performance against previously unbeaten Martin Fidel Rios.

The 28-year-old Flores is rapidly rising up the super bantamweight division and solidified his contender status when he took down Oscar Escandon in a gutsy performance in April. He also owns victories over previously unbeaten Mario Munoz, Oscar Arenas and Rodolfo Hernandez. Born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, he will be making his east coast debut in his fourth U.S. start.

A hard-hitting Argentine from Buenos Aires, Cusolito has knocked out his last five opponents and 19 of 21 throughout his career. The 27-year-old won the first 14 starts of his career, including 13 by knockout. His U.S. debut will come on September 22 when he looks to be the first to add a blemish to Flores’ now perfect record.

Petrov_Diaz 2
Philadelphia, PA (September 3, 2015) – Boxcino 2014 champion Petr “Zar” Petrov (36-4-2, 17 KO’s) will fight undefeated Liam Walsh (19-0, 13 KO’s) in a
WBO Lightweight elimination bout on October 10th in Manchester, England.

The winner of the fight will be the mandatory challenger for the winner of the WBO Lightweight title bout between Terry Flanagan and Diego Magdaleno, which will take place on the same card on October 10.

Petrov earned the opportunity on the strength of winning the 2014 Boxcino Lightweight championship when he defeated Fedor Papazov (14-0), Chris Rudd (13-1), and Fernando Carcamo (17-5).

“This is a great opportunity to fight in a WBO final eliminator, this brings me closer to a world title which has been a lifelong dream of mine. It’s been a long road for me to get to this position, and I want to make my family and friends proud. I want to thank Artie Pelullo for believing in me and for getting me the chance, I won’t disappoint,”said Petrov.

“Fighting Liam Walsh on his home turf will be tough, but at this point in my career there is no cutting corners. Walsh is in my way, and I must beat him to achieve my goals. He is a young-strong fighter, but he has never seen anybody like me inside the ring.”

Said Banner Promotions President, Arthur Pelullo, “This is another case of Boxcino being the springboard to a huge a opportunity. Petr has earned this opportunity, and we believe that he will win this fight and fight the winner of the main event between Flanagan and Magdaleno.”

On April 3rd, Petrov won a 10-round unanimous decision over former world champion Gamaliel Diaz in Corona, California.

Petrov will join Banner Promotions stablemate John Thompson who will challenge for the WBO Jr. Middleweight title against Liam Smith on the same card.

Officer Smith relives boxing dream

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Sept. 3rd, 2015) — Jon Smith always knew he wanted to be a police officer, but even after a full year on the force, a job that required more than a year of training and sacrifice, the sweet science is the one suspect he can’t apprehend.

More than three years since his professional debut, the 26-year-old Smith, a full-time officer with the Providence Police Department and a Cranston, R.I., native, returns to the boxing ring Friday, Sept. 18th, 2015 at Twin River Casino on the undercard of CES Boxing’s “Mayhem,” where he’ll face Gloucester, Mass., vet Pedro Gonzalez (2-2, 1 KO) in a four-round junior middleweight bout.

Tickets for “Mayhem” are priced at $40.00, $100.00 and $125.00 (VIP) and available for purchase online at www.cesboxing.com or www.twinriver.com, by phone at 401-724-2253/2254 or at the Twin River Players Club. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

“Right now, I’m working on managing both careers,” said Smith, who debuted with CES in October of 2012 in a win over Dinis Paiva, “but it’s not easy.

“A lot of times, things get physical at work, then I have to go in the gym and get physical there. It takes its toll.”

The dream of being a police officer always took precedence over Smith’s desire to box. Even growing up as a boxing fan, Smith never actually envisioned himself in the ring throwing hands.

“Then I decided to try it and I ended up being pretty good at it,” he said.

Training with Rhode Island’s Brian Pennacchia, Smith breezed through the amateur ranks, winning the New England Golden Gloves and the Southern New England Championships three times while also advancing to the finals of the Eastern Regionals in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Figuring, “Why stop now?” Smith immediately jumped to the pros after three and a half years as an amateur, winning two bouts in a seven-month span before chasing his real dream.

Training for the academy while boxing professionally “would’ve been really hard,” Smith admits.

“It’s really grueling, an all-day thing, all day, everyday,” he said. “Not only that, boxing is a really tough sport. To do both at the same time would’ve been risky.

“I thought about it, but I don’t always make the smart choice, so I had to listen to my elders on that one, otherwise I would’ve done both and I could’ve hurt and blown my opportunity with my career.”

Smith eventually got the call from Providence, one he didn’t always think would come after trying, and failing, to make it in the past. While training for the academy, Smith recalls how his boxing background helped get him through some of the tougher days.

“We did have boxing in the academy, so that went well, but just being an athlete really helped me out,” Smith said. “Every single day was grueling training. My past experience helped me. Where some people were having trouble, I was doing it and then helping the others get through it. It really pushed me.”

Nothing’s changed. The daily grind continues to challenge Smith in ways he never imagined.

“You never know what can happen,” he said. “I’ve been through some crazy things already in Providence. You run into a couple of crazy things every shift.

“I’ve been in fights, a lot of physicality. Jumping fences, running, chasing – it’s just part of the job. You have to stay safe and watch your back and your partner’s back.”

On Sept. 18th, Smith will have to go it alone – no partner, no calls for backup. It’s the lifestyle he left behind to chase his dream, but one he can’t quite escape just yet.

“It’s just something I had to do,” he admits. “Trying to do both would’ve taken my focus off. It took everything I had to get through all the training, all my time, all my focus. To continue to box might’ve hurt my progress, but now that I’ve been on the force for a year now and I’ve gotten the approval to box again, I’m ready to go. It’s very exciting.”

“Mayhem” is headlined by two title bouts, including the 10-round main event between Rich Gingras (15-4-1, 9 KOs) of Lincoln, R.I., the reigning New England Light Heavyweight champion, and unbeaten challenger Angel Camacho Jr. (14-0, 4 KOs) of Providence; and the six-round co-feature between Worcester, Mass., junior middleweight Khiary Gray (8-0, 6 KOs) and Kenton Sippio-Cook (6-2, 4 KOs) of Austin, Tex., for the vacant Universal Boxing Federation (UBF) Northeast Title.

The undercard features several new faces, highlighted by Stoughton, Mass., junior welterweight Travis Demko (3-0, 1 KO), who makes his Rhode Island debut against Mohamed Allam (1-0) of Holyoke, Mass., followed by Worcester junior middleweight Andy Gonzalez (1-0, 1 KO), who battles Boston, Mass., vet Rafael Francis (0-5). Both are four-round bouts.

In an added bonus, New London, Conn., heavyweight and Peter Manfredo Sr. protégé Cassius Chaney (3-0, 2 KOs), a former two-time amateur national champion, makes his Twin River debut against Alando Pugh (1-5-1, 1 KO) of Washington, D.C., in a four-round bout and undefeated Cranston welterweight Nick DeLomba (8-0, 2 KOs) returns from his biggest win in July to face 18-fight vet Jose Guzman (6-11-1) in a six-round bout. Framingham, Mass., junior welterweight Julio Perez (1-0) faces newcomer Pedro Martinez Jr. of Mooresville, N.C., in a four-round bout.

Bronx, N.Y., light heavyweight “Fly” Mike Marshall (1-0, 1 KO) and Worcester super lightweight Freddy Sanchez (5-0, 4 KOs) will be featured on the undercard in separate bouts.

Two-Time World Heavyweight Champion Shannon Briggs Headlines Heavyweight Card Saturday, Sept. 5 at Hard Rock Live More than 20 former World Heavyweight Champions Ringside

shannon-briggs12
“Never before in history has this been done. You are talking about twenty-some former heavyweight champions of the last forty years are coming together for one big family reunion. All the champs: Larry Holmes, Evander Holyfield, Mike Tyson, Wladimir Klitschko and The Champ Shannon Briggs – two-time heavyweight champion.

“On Saturday night expect action. There are eight heavyweight fights with all of the former heavyweight champions sitting around the ring. You see Holyfield sitting right there, then you see Tony Tucker over there, Tony Tubbs, Chris Byrd, Hasim Rahman – this is unreal. It’s never been done before. Thanks to Kris Lawrence of the Heavyweight Factory and the Hard Rock Hotel it is happening.

“I was fat. I was going to Publix every day and eating fast food, fried chicken, ice cream and was in a depression. Then it hit me one day, I said ‘man, I am the champ. Get it together.’ I weighed 380 lbs. Close to 400, sitting on the couch fat and depressed. Everybody that saw me just laughed. I knew I had to do something about it. Look good feel good. So I started changing my diet and I started working out and I started walking – every day. Then I said to myself “Let’s go champ,” then boom it came to me.

“I feel phenomenal. Now I am eating right – nothing but organic food, no juice, no soda, nothing but filtered water. Look at me I’m in the best shape of my life. Look at me – I’m in better shape at 43 then I was at 23.

“I realized that it’s also about the people you are around – if you are around good people then good things happen. If you are around negative people you are going to become negative. If you want to be happy you’ve got to hang around happy people.

“I feel like I am inspiring people. Win lose or draw I will feel good. I get calls every day from people saying thank you because they face adversity and they say to themselves ‘Let’s Go Champ.’

“The heavyweight division needs Shannon Briggs and boxing needs Shannon Briggs.

“I’m in this hot gym every day. It’s 110 degrees every day. They (naysayers) can say what they want. I have been in here for two years straight.

“Klitschko didn’t want to fight me then and he doesn’t want to fight me now, but the people are going to force the fight

“They laughed at George Foreman but then he upset Michael Moorer. This is going to be the biggest upset in boxing history – Shannon ‘The Cannon’ Briggs knocking out Wladimir Klitschko.

“On Wilder: Wilder didn’t want the fight. My partner Kris offered him $2M and he wouldn’t take it. 954-761-5754 – Al Haymon call me right now. I’m ready champ.

“Klitschko is going down hard. I want the title back. I had the title twice but I was young and I was inexperienced and immature. Who would have ever thought that Shannon Briggs grew up. And I feel good. I have a little gray hair on my chin but I feel fifteen years younger than I am.

“Everybody is going to think, wow, I thought he was just this guy having fun and laughing.

“The heavyweight division is back. You’ve got Trevor ‘The Dream’ who won a title Friday night and I am ready to take over the heavyweight division.”

BROOKLYN BRAWL RECAP: BOXING STANDS OUT AMONG THE ATTRACTIONS IN CONEY ISLAND

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Sept. 2, 2015) – Boxing came back to Coney Island last Tuesday night, and by all accounts, it was a smashing success.

Boxing champion-turned-promoter Dmitriy Salita put together a 10-bout Brooklyn Brawl card, and fans assembled at the Brooklyn Cyclones’ MCU Park were blown away by the shocker ending to the main event.

Veteran Cornelius “Lightning” Lock of Flatbush, Brooklyn, found a home for a nasty left hand, and finished off favorite Alex Miskirtchian in round three of their scheduled ten. Pro boxing came to Coney Island for the first time in 14 years, and didn’t disappoint with a win for the local fighter, who trains at the famed Gleason’s Gym in the County of Kings.

Other winners included Junior Wright, the cruiserweight contender from Chicago aiming at another world title shot; Dimash Niyazov, the NYPD officer moonlighting as a pro hitter; “Trigger” Treysean Wiggins, the fighting pride of Newburgh, N.Y., opening eyes as a solid prospect to watch.

A national, live viewing audience was able to scan the fistic fury as ESPN3 carried three and a half hours of the Brooklyn Brawl, with blow-by-blow man Michael Woods and analyst Brian Adams on the call for Boxing at the Beach. The event will also run on MSG Networks during the month of Sept.; fans can check local listings for the latest broadcast schedule.

“The main event was a very competitive fight and there was an explosive ending,” said Salita, who was blessed with beautiful night, in addition to a bevy of compelling bouts. “Lock scored an upset over a world-ranked, world-class featherweight in Alex Miskirtchian. I believed before the fight that the winner of that one deserves an opportunity at a world title. So, Cornelius Lock put it all together and with such a performance shows he is a threat to all the big names in the division.”

Lock was busy and effective and proved that his left hand puts all future foes on notice. The 36-year-old veteran (23-7-2, 15 KOs), said, “It was a good win against a good fighter rated No. 10 by the IBF. I really took this fight seriously. I had to make a statement that I’m not done, that I still have a lot left. So I knew I had to fight smart, and that’s what I did, use my experience.”

In addition, fans at the ballpark were impressed with the skills of two-time Irish Olympian John Joe Nevin, who scored a stoppage win over Victor Capaceta. Heavy hitter Bahktiyar Eyubov went to 8-0 with 8 KOs, powering past Cory Vom Baur. Brighton Beach brawler Giorgi Gelashvili had the crowd stunned when he overwhelmed DeLoren Gray-Jordon with a lightning-fast salvo of blows in round two, and the colorful “Brooklyn Buddah” Gary Beriguette showed effective aggression in scoring a decision victory over Anton Williamson. Rounding out the card, FDNY firefighter Jose De La Rosa got the W over Kamal Muhammad, and heavyweight Emilio Salas opened things up with a second round TKO at the expense of Glenn Thomas.

Respected former fighter Adams touched on the event from his broadcast position. “I truly believe the card Salita put on was great for the sport,” he said. “There isn’t a great deal of room for local promoters to blossom, but the promotion Salita held was at a world-class level!”

Blow-by-blow man Woods, who is editor of TheSweetScience.com and a contributor for RING, weighed in, saying “We were all pleased and honored to showcase these fights on ESPN3. The stoppage win by Lock was a fitting ending and thriller of a finish, for the entertainment and thrill-seeking destination that is Coney Island!

“I am grateful to ESPN that the fighters on the show had the chance to be seen nationally. I couldn’t have asked for a better evening of boxing in such a stunning venue. Our next show will be Oct. 24 and we are always looking to improve and bring a tremendous level of excitement to the fans,” said Salita, summing up the exciting Boxing At The Beach event.

Brooklyn Brawl Makes Charitable Contributions

When some of the toughest brawlers in the Borough of Brooklyn brandished black and pink gloves last Tuesday, it wasn’t because they were making a fashion statement. The boxers joined their brethren from the NFL, Major League Baseball and the NBA in generating awareness for breast cancer, and the “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” campaign.

The affiliation was announced at the public Brooklyn Brawl weigh-in at MCU Park, as the Brooklyn Brawl and Brooklyn Cyclones donated 50 tickets to cancer charities in Midtown Manhattan, reaching families who have members undergoing cancer treatment in New York City.

Additionally, throughout last Tuesday evening’s event, boxing fans at MCU Park and those watching the live broadcast on ESPN3 were presented with facts about breast cancer and the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer program. Cancer awareness programs are of distinct importance to Brooklyn Brawl promoter Dmitriy Salita.

Said Salita, “I lost my mother to breast cancer when I was 16-years-old. Boxing was a tremendous resource for me, it gave me an outlet and something to lean on. Now we can use boxing as a tool to raise awareness and support for those battling this terrible disease. This very important cause is closest to my heart.”

In addition to the Brooklyn Brawl’s charitable partnership with cancer charities, the Brooklyn Brawl and Brooklyn Cyclones donated 200 Boxing At The Beach tickets to the NYPD and FDNY Widows and Orphans Foundations, and local precincts and fire stations.

“With a Brooklyn police officer and a FDNY firefighter on the boxing card, it was fitting that we gave a special salute to our everyday heroes and families by inviting them to our Brooklyn Brawl event,” said Steve Cohen, Vice President of the Brooklyn Cyclones. “Our organization always looks for ways to thank the men and women who serve our great city.”

ARROWSMITH TO MAKE PRO DEBUT IN WALSALL

AMATEUR star Reuben Arrowsmith will make his eagerly anticipated professional debut at Banks’s Stadium, Walsall on October 10.

Trained by four-time world champion Ricky Hatton, the 19-year-old won five national titles in the vest and head guard and is confident of making his mark in the paid ranks.

He will box an as yet to be confirmed opponent over four rounds on the undercard of a bill topped by popular Stourbridge welterweight Steven “Fierce” Pearce and believes he’ll take to the pros like the proverbial duck to water.

“It’s great to have a date for my debut,” Arrowsmith said. “I’ve not boxed since last October, but I’ve had high quality sparring with really good boxers and it’s just a case of putting everything into practice now.

“The pros are different to the amateurs but my debut will be over four rounds and I’m used to doing three-threes so I don’t think it’s going to be a huge change for me.

“Obviously, when I get to six, eight and ten rounds, thinks will be more difficult, but Ricky and his assistant Mike [Jackson] know exactly what they’re doing and will get me ready for any challenge.”

Arrowsmith has been working with Hatton at his gym in Hyde, Greater Manchester since June and believes ‘The Hitman’ is the right man to help him realise his dream of becoming Market Harborough’s first pro champion since George Aldridge set pulses racing back in the 1960s.

“The good thing about Ricky is that he trains fighters to their strengths. It’s not all about getting in close and leading with the left hook, he teaches you how to use your advantages and set your shots up and I think I can go all the way with him.” Reuben said.

“Ricky is a two weight world champion and fought the best of the best so I couldn’t wish to learn from anyone else.”

The October 10 bill is promoted by Black Country Boxing with tickets priced at £30 (unreserved seating) and £60 (stage and ringside).

SOSA-PAZOS MATCH OCT. 2 HEADLINES PUERTO RICAN BOXING CLASSIC AT 2300 ARENA IN PHILADELPHIA

Jason Sosa
Philadelphia, PA—Hard-hitting junior lightweight contender Jason Sosa, of Camden, NJ, takes on Jorge Pazos, of Guamuchil, Mexico, in the scheduled eight-round main event Friday evening, Oct. 2, at the First Annual Puerto Rican Boxing Classic at the 2300 Arena in South Philadelphia.

Sosa, 27, is fresh off his first-round knockout over former world-title challenger Jerry Belmontes, of Corpus Christi, TX, on Aug. 16 in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

The win over Belmontes marked Sosa’s 12th consecutive knockout and his 13th K0 overall on his 17-1-3 record. He is ranked No.13 in the world by the International Boxing Federation (IBF).

Sosa turned pro in 2009 after only three amateur fights—he lost two of them—and he has developed into a world-class fighter since teaming up with manager/trainer Raul “Chino” Rivas in 2012.

The Oct. 2 card will mark Sosa’s third appearance at the 2300 Arena, where he is 1-0-1. He boxed a four-round draw with Jose Ortiz, of Jersey City, NJ, there in 2010 and this year he knocked out Bergman Aguilar, of Nicaragua, in four rounds. Aguilar suffered a broken jaw in the match.

Sosa’s other major victory came in 2014 in Atlantic City where he knocked out Michael “Lefty” Brooks, of Staten Island, NY, in nine rounds. Brooks also suffered a broken jaw in that match.

In other fights this year, Sosa knocked out Herbert Quartey, of Ghana, and Santiago Bustos, of Spain.

Pazos (right), 26, makes his second appearance in Pennsylvania, having lost a 10-round decision there to Gamalier Rodriguez, of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, for the vacant NABO featherweight title two summers ago in Bethlehem.

A pro since 2007, Pazos is 14-8-1, 8 K0s. In his last fight Feb. 20 in New York, Pazos lost an eight-round decision to unbeaten Bryant Cruz, of Port Chester, NY.

The seven-bout fight card figures to attract a sold-out crowd.

From bantamweight Sixto Escobar, who became the first Puerto Rican world champion in 1935, to current title-holder Danny Garcia, of Philadelphia, Puerto Ricans have had a long and storied history in boxing.

Among area fighters looking to display their talents on the Oct. 2 card are local Puerto Rican fighters from Philadelphia and New Jersey. Many of them bring a loyal following to their fights.

In addition, invitations to attend and sign autographs will be sent to outstanding Puerto Rican fighters up and down the East Coast.

First fight is 7 pm.
