Yigit predicts KO in ‘slugfest’ with British talent Owen

Anthony Yigit (13-0-1, 5 KOs) will face Tony Owen (16-3, 3 KOs) on June 20 as part of an action-packed Nordic Fight Night event at the Ballerup Super Arena in Copenhagen.

The Swedish southpaw returns to the ring following a one-sided points victory over EBU-EU Light Welterweight Champion Timo Schwarzkopf, and is eager to prove his pedigree once again as he prepares to go toe-to-toe with the tough Englishman Owen.

‘’I think our styles will make for a great fight,’’ said the 23 year-old. ‘’Tony is a tall southpaw, and like all British boxers, he will be coming to fight. He’s not going to back down, he won’t be scared to stand and trade, and that’s great because neither am I. I think this could be a real slugfest and a fight fans will be talking about for a long time.

‘’I have a lot of respect for Tony, it will be a tough fight, but I’m confident in my own ability and I honestly don’t see this fight going the distance. He is going to want to stand and fight with me at the beginning but as the rounds go on he will lose heart. I will gradually break him down and then stop him in the later rounds.’’

In recent months, Yigit has begun to live up to his amateur billing. Back-to-back show stealing performances against Kim Poulsen (TKO6) and Timo Schwarzkopf (UD10) have given Swedish fans much hope for the future. As the London 2012 Olympian prepares for his fifteenth professional contest, he is confident that his transition to the paid ranks is almost complete.

‘’It takes time to make that transition from amateur to pro,’’ reflects the Stockholm fighter. ‘’I had a lot of experience and a lot of success in the amateur ranks, but it has taken me a while to adapt to the professional game. Now, everything is starting to come together and the results are showing in the ring.

‘’I know I’m not the finished article yet. I’m still only 23 years old and I still have a long way to go, but I’m getting there. There are still areas to improve on, but once I get them down, you will see a more complete fighter. That will come with age and experience. For now, I’m happy with my progress and I’m ready to get another win under my belt on June 20.’’

Yigit joins a star-studded Scandinavian line up for the Nordic Fight Night on June 20 at the Ballerup Super Arena in Copenhagen. Danish super middleweight Patrick Nielsen (25-1, 12 KOs) defends his WBA International title against Charles Adamu (23-6, 17 KOs), while rising featherweight talent Dennis Ceylan (14-0-1, 7 KOs) takes on Sergio Prado (10-4-1, 4 KOs). All the action will be shown live on TV10 in Sweden. Tickets are available via billetlugen.dk.

SOUTH AFRICAN TOMMY OOSTHUIZEN DEFENDS TITLE SATURDAY WITH HIS EYES ON THE BIG PRIZE

Johannesburg, South Africa (June 1) – Aware of the red-hot action at the top of the light-heavyweight division, IBO champion Tommy Oosthuizen intends crashing the party before the year is out.

The unbeaten South African (24-0-2, 14 KOs) defends his title for the first time at Emperors Palace, east of Johannesburg, on Saturday against Robert Berridge (26-2-1, 21 KOs) of New Zealand.
He tops the “D-Day at the Palace” tournament, which includes world-rated Mateusz Masternak against Johnny Muller in an intriguing 10-rounder.
After Saturday, Oosthuizen intends chasing down WBC champion Adonis Stevenson for a September showdown. Promoter Rodney Berman has already entered negotiations with the lineal champion’s management.
Oosthuizen has beaten a slew of contenders, chiefly countryman Ryno Liebenberg, plus Ezequiel Maderna, Serge Yannick and Marcus Johnson, but is desperate to nail a “name” opponent.
In 2014, while still campaigning at super-middleweight, there were moves to match him with Andre Ward, a fight that would have placed Oosthuizen firmly in the spotlight.
The fast-handed southpaw admits that the failure to secure a major match-up has seen him lose focus and allow his discipline to wane. Berman has had him on the carpet a number of times for his late-night carousing and slack attitude to training, but ever since he was handed a final warning Oosthuizen has been on the straight and narrow.
“I’m definitely taking the sport more seriously. I was waiting for the big fights. They never came, so I got bored,” he says. “I neglected the game, never showed it enough respect. But that’s behind me. I practically live in the gym now.”
Oosthuizen turned in a career-best performance in dominating rugged Liebenberg in March. He was in the gym soon after, although he had to change tack three weeks ago when Roberto Bolonti, his original opponent, reneged on his contract with Golden Gloves. Berridge, a fellow southpaw, then stepped in.
Fortunately Oosthuizen had been helping cruiserweight Thabiso Mchunu, another left-hander, with sparring for his recent bout. Stablemates Flo Simba and Johnny Muller have also provided sparring.
Oosthuizen has studied a couple of Berridge’s fights on video. He sees a man who clearly comes to fight.
“He’s a top competitor, someone willing to give what it takes. He’s a tough, strong guy with a will to win. The trouble for him is that my head’s back in the right place. I’m comfortable at light-heavy, which is an exciting division with lots of competition.”
With just two draws in an otherwise flawless 26-fight career, Oosthuizen claims he has never been hurt as a pro fighter. “I was hurt emotionally by those two draws, because I know I’m better than that. But I’ve never been shook up . . . that’s the truth.”
He says no single opponent has stood out for his power, although he rates American contender Marcus Johnson, whom he beat on points in Oklahoma three years ago, as his toughest opponent. “He was a hot prospect and came hungry. But I handled him.”
Surveying the current landscape at light-heavyweight, he rates both Sergey Kovalev, the WBA, IBF and WBO champion, and Stevenson as outstanding adversaries.
“They deserve to be on top. They wouldn’t be there if they didn’t impress the world. I’d fight either of them. I’m ready now, I just need the chance. I want the big names.
”I know people said I looked good against Liebenberg, but that wasn’t my best. I was probably at my best when I stopped Evert Bravo in nine rounds in a title fight four years ago. As good as that was, though, my best is still to come.”
Oosthuizen’s new attitude, which suggests he may have finally left his tearaway days behind him, points to a dangerous fighter.
He needs to win well against Berridge this Saturday. Only then will the super fights he craves come into the reckoning.
Undercard action includes a WBA Pan-Africa lightweight title fight between former IBF champion Mzonke Fana and hot prospect Xolisani Ndongeni, plus Luyando Jako of South Africa against unbeaten Roman Zhailauov of Kazakhstan in an eight-round welterweight clash.
Heavyweights Ruann Visser and Steve Shumba clash over four.

Ajisafe lands Commonwealth title shot against Wanyonyi on June 13

LONDON (1 JUNE) Yorkshireman Bob Ajisafe will compete for the vacant Commonwealth light-heavyweight title against Kenya’s Daniel Wanyonyi on June 13 in Bristol.

The fight will act as chief support to Lee Haskins’ IBF interim world bantamweight title clash with Ryosuke Iwasa and takes place over a scheduled twelve rounds. It will be televised on Channel 5.

Twenty-six-year-old Wanyonyi is based in Nairobi, Kenya and boasts a professional record of 21-6-2 (17 KOs). Known for his punch power and exciting style, Wanyonyi recovered from a patchy start to his eight-year professional career to win the Kenyan title and the African Boxing Union title.

In winning the latter, he defeated the unbeaten and highly-touted Matamba Debatch Postolo in Kinshasa, Zaire last June. The fight marked the first time Wanyonyi had gone twelve rounds in his career and he passed the test with flying colours, taking a unanimous decision at the bout’s conclusion.

Leeds man Ajisafe, meanwhile, is the current British light-heavyweight champion and the proud winner of Channel 5’s MaxiNutrition Knockout Tournament. The 30-year-old impressively stopped finalist Matty Clarkson in four rounds to lift the trophy last November and has now won seven fights in a row, five of which have ended in stoppage.

‘Lionheart’ Bob, 15-2 (6 KOs), has fought for the Commonwealth title once before – he lost a unanimous decision to Tony Bellew in 2010 – but is currently in the form of his life and appears more than equipped to pick up another belt and continue his journey up the world rankings.

*** Lee Haskins and Ryosuke Iwasa fight for the vacant IBF Interim World Bantamweight Title and Bob Ajisafe and Daniel Wanyonyi fight for the vacant Commonwealth light-heavyweight title on June 13 at Bristol’s Action Indoor Sports Arena. Man on a Mission: Lippe continues knockout streak in Miami!

Miami, OK (May 31, 2015) – Renowned heavyweight up and comer Trey Lippe-Morrison remained perfect as a pro following yet another impressive knockout yesterday evening at the Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, OK.

Fighting in front of a sellout crowd, something he’s become accustomed to as a member of Holden Productions’ “Four State Franchise”, Lippe-Morrison faced Thomas Jones in the six round main event. With legendary trainer Jesse Reid in his corner for the first time, Lippe-Morrison scored an impressive second round stoppage of Jones. After dominating the first round, Lippe-Morrison unleashed a vicious combination that badly staggered Jones, forcing his corner to throw in the towel just 35 seconds after the start of the round.

Lippe-Morrison, who lives in Tulsa, is now 8-0 with all of his victories by knockout.

Kenzie Witt of Bartelsville, OK went the distance for the first time as a pro but improved to 5-0 following a four round unanimous decision over Kansas City MO’s Lucas Overcast. Witt was in control throughout but gained valuable experience against the game Overcast. Witt, who is the half brother of Lippe-Morrison, stopped his previous four opponents inside the first round.

“Trey and Kenzie continue to impress me,” said Promoter Tony Holden. “I’m going to continue stepping them up but both of them have incredible power like their father did. Our fans have been fantastic and I thank them for packing the house again. We will make it our duty to continue giving them exciting bouts with fighters they want to see.”

“Four State Franchise” member Jesse Cook (14-1-1, Seneca, MO) battled to an eight round draw in a welterweight contest against Kevin Womack (5-5-2, Baltimore, MD) and his brother Dillon Cook (14-0, Seneca, MO) stopped Joe Jiles (3-5, McAlester, OK) in the opening round of a junior middleweight bout. Undefeated welterweight prospect Jarrett Rose of Bartlesville upped his record to 7-0 by stopping Robert Seyam in the third round, while Kathina Catron and Juan Parra each won four round decisions.

The card was also broadcasted by Hall of Famer Al Bernstein and Oklahoma City boxing legend Sean O’Grady on KSNF and Cox Cable. Fans in the Four State Area (Missouri, Kansas Oklahoma and Arkansas) received the broadcast courtesy of a new television deal that will continue during the next card at the Buffalo Run Casino.

“It’s such an honor to have Al and Sean broadcasting my shows,” said Holden. “Both men are incredible at what they do. This is another great outlet for those that can’t make it to the fights not only to enjoy the action live on TV but do so with two of the best broadcasters in the business.”

Holden Productions next card is scheduled for July 25.

Prospect Boxing approaches its 20th Promotion and owner shares his blueprint

Prospect Boxing owner Paul Graham has made his blueprint for running successful boxing promotions company which ensures he keeps his boxers and himself busy throughout the season. Reflecting on his time a professional promoter, Graham shares some of the lessons he has learned ” Not every lad that turns over from the amateurs will be British, European or World title contenders but with dedication and hard work and the right matchmaking, most can fight for at least a Scottish area title, which if matched correctly can provide both the fighters and the punters the same entertainment you would expect on some of the televised shows. Its this level of matchmaking that i have tried to push through on all my shows”

In the short time that he has been promoting after 12 Years and officiating in over 600 bouts as a referee Paul has now successfully put together 20 promotions under the guise of the BBBOC, which have featured Scottish, British Masters and WBO European title fights.

In an ever changing marketplace, which has seen more boxing on television than ever, Graham is clear how the non televised shows can maintain there presence “It’s no secret that the key to small hall promotions that have no TV or big sponsorship deals is ticket sales, and while we always welcome sponsorship from local business to help towards the costs of a show,t it’s a necessary evil that all young boxers have to chap doors, get on facebook and twitter and generally bang their own drum and sell tickets to cover the cost of their fights. We also provide regular mail shots to local press where we can to help get the word out.

“Only last week, I went around local pubs, clubs, shops and hairdressers putting up nearly 75 posters and distributing flyers to help promote my next show in Fauldhouse welfare on Friday 5th June features Four fights, food and entertainment and after party in the Commercial bar all for £40. Not a bad evening’s entertainment if I say so myself.

He adds “So if I can put together 3 or 4 Miners welfare type shows and or 3 larger shows with 12-14 contests that have been very successful at The Ravenscraig regional Sports facility in Motherwell, we’re looking at 6 plus shows per year. To achieve this output i work close with Tommy Gilmour MBE, Iain Wilson and Colin Bellshaw at the St Andrews Sporting club, Stevie McGuire at SM promotions in Fife, Granite City Promotions in Aberdeen. As a result some of my fighters will take 50/50 fights away from home to gain experience and further their ambitions, these fights are crucial to building a fighter and also getting them up the rankings. With a high volume of shows and my extensive experience, and possible title fights there’s no reason for anyone looking to turn over to the pros not to come with us!

Our next two promotions booked are
Friday 5th June, Fauldhouse Miners Welfare, West Lothian 4 fights, entertainment, curry n chips and after party.
Saturday 5th Sep, Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility, 14 contests with a title fight to be confirmed

Contact Paul at Prospect boxing page on twitter, Face book, info@prospectboxing.co.uk paulgraham@prospectproperties.co.uk or 01698 338888 or 07801735598 if you want to join us on the journey.

Gavronski, Green score TKO victories to highlight Incredible Battle at the Boat 101

Tacoma, WA (May 30, 2015) Continuing their trend of putting on incredible fights each and every time, the Battle at the Boat series hosted their 101st event live from the Emerald Queen Casino on Saturday, May 30th . A packed house inside the I-5 showroom was treated to what is sure to be one of the most talked about fight cards of the year.

In the main event of the evening, Tacoma’s own Mike “Imagine Me” Gavronski (18-1-1) took on Tyrell “Hollywood” Hendrix (11-7-2) in a rematch of their classic 2011 draw which was televised on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights. The disdain between the two men was obvious, even leading to an intense scuffle at the previous day’s weigh-ins. The two traded haymakers early on, with neither man able to gain the advantage. However, the always-dangerous Gavronski was able to find his groove in the later rounds, sending Hendrix to the canvas in the ninth. When his opponent was unable to recover before the referee’s 10-count, the hometown crowd went crazy, celebrating their hometown heroes TKO victory.

The co-main event was a short one, with Vancouver native Virgil “Black Mamba” Green (11-4) knocking out Marcelino Pineda (5-1) just one minute into the very first round. A brutal hook from Green sent his opponent to the canvas ending the fight.

In what turned out to be one of the more intriguing bouts of the evening, undefeated Ray “Lightning Jr” Lampkin (8-0–, 2 KOs) took on Yakima’ Andres Reyes (3-1) in a 5 round featured bout. The overly confident Lampkin landed quick flurries and stayed busy throughout the fight. Despite the difference in professional experience, Reyes was undaunted, answering his opponent punch for punch. In the end, Lampkin remained undefeated with a majority decision victory.

Three incredible undercard contests highlighted this incredible night of fights. Those results are as follows:

Jason Davis (13-10-2, 4 KOs) def. Daryl Gardner (2-6-1, 2 KOs) via 2nd round KO

Sean Gee (2-0) def. Antonio Neal (3-2, 3 KOs) via Majority Decision (40-36; 40-36; 38-38)

Guillermo Maldonado (1-0) def. Bobby McIntyre (0-1) via Unanimous Decision (40-36; 39-37; 39-37)

Next up from Halquist Productions, Super Fight League 41, live from the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma on Saturday July 11th at 7:00PM. Tickets are on sale now through the Emerald Queen Casino box office as well as all Ticketmaster locations. Jean Pascal vs. Yunieski Gonzalez Added as Co-Feature to Kovalev vs. Mohammedi on Saturday, July 25 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas Televised Live on HBO®

Kovalev & Pascal Weigh-InCasino de Montreal
Las Vegas, NV: Main Events, InterBox and Jean Pascal Promotions are proud to announce Jean Pascal (29-3-1, 17 KOs) will face Yunieski Gonzalez (16-0, 12 KOs) in the ten-round co-feature of the Kovalev-Mohammedi Unified Light Heavyweight World Championship fight on July 25 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada. Both fights will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing® beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Pascal, the former WBC Light Heavyweight World Champion, looks to prove he is still a force to be reckoned with in the light heavyweight division by taking on a young undefeated prospect in Gonzalez. This will be his first fight outside his adopted home country of Canada since 2008 and his third fight in seven months. The 32-year old is originally from Port-au-Prince, Haiti and currently resides in Laval, Quebec, Canada.

“I’m eager to get back in the ring,” said Pascal. “The years where I have been very active are the ones that I’ve performed the best. Gonzalez is a good fighter and everybody knows I am not content with fighting just a regular fighter. I’m already back in the gym and focusing on July 25.”

Pascal will face a big challenge from his opponent, undefeated Cuban prospect Yunieski Gonzalez. Yunieski has a stellar 75% knockout-to-win ratio and has stopped his last seven opponents in a row dating all the way back to 2012. His previous three fights have not lasted past the third round and two of those were first-round stoppages. The 29-year old is originally from Cuba and now makes his home in Miami, Florida.

“This is the fight I have been waiting for,” said a confident Gonzalez. “I’m not punching at him, I’m punching through him and when I’m done with him he won’t be any good for anyone else.”

Main Events’ CEO, Kathy Duva, is excited to work with Pascal and InterBox again. She said, “Kovalev and Pascal are both true warriors in the sense that they are always willing to face the very best. So putting them on the same card made a lot of sense for us and for the fans who will get to see both of them bring their electricity to the same ring again. With Pascal there is never a dull moment in the ring and, as proof that he never backs away from a challenge, this time he steps up to face a talented, hungry undefeated contender who has the ability to knock out anyone he faces.”

“For his third fight in less than a year for Jean Pascal, this is a great opportunity and challenge for him,” said Jean Bédard, President of InterBox. “Gonzalez had a phenomenal amateur career and his professional career seems to follow the same direction. It’s always a pleasure to work with Kathy Duva and Main Events.”

Greg Leon, CEO of Jean Pascal Promotions, added, “Jean Pascal Promotions is thrilled to be back on HBO for the second time in four months. Yunieski Gonzalez is a talented fighter and a formidable challenge but I have no doubt Jean Pascal will be far too much for him.”

Joe DeGuardia of Star Boxing, Gonzalez’s promoter, said “I am thrilled to be on to such a sensational HBO card filled with light heavyweight bangers. We are very high on Yunieski Gonzalez and this is the kind of fight that he needs to propel him to the top of the light heavyweight division.”

Tickets priced at $300, $200, $100, $50 and $25, not including applicable tax and service fees, are on sale now and are available at all Las Vegas Ticketmaster locations (select Smith’s Food and Drug Centers and Ritmo Latino). To charge by phone with a major credit card, call Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000. Tickets also are available for purchase at www.mandalaybay.com or www.ticketmaster.com.

Undercard information will be announced shortly.

In the main event, Puerto Rico’s Jayson “Star” Velez (22-0-1, 16 KOs) of Juncos, will battle it out against Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico’s Daniel “Huracan” Ramirez (11-1, 5 KOs), in a classic Puerto Rico vs. Mexico 10-round featherweight bout sure to excite fans. The co-main televised event features Los Angeles native Carlos “The Solution” Morales (7-1-3, 2 KOs) taking on Emmanuel Gonzalez (14-1, 7 KOs) of the Bronx, New York in an eight-round super bantamweight bout. Opening the telecast, Los Angeles favorite Christian “Chimpa” Gonzalez (9-0, 9 KOs) is scheduled to fight Darryl Hayes (3-4, 1 KOs) of Houston, Texas, in a six-round super-feather weight fight, and Rafael Gramajo (3-1-1, 2 KOs) also of Los Angeles is hoping to make airtime in a four-round super bantamweight fight against Pablo Cupul (4-16, 3 KOs) of Merida, Mexico.

In the non-televised undercard, Pablo Rubio of Whittier, Calif. will take on Martin Regalado of Los Angeles in a four-round bout, both fighters will be making their professional debut.

Hailing from Juncos, Puerto Rico, Jayson “Star” Velez made his professional debut in 2007 and his U.S. debut in his ninth fight in June 2009 triumphing over Jesus Bayron at Madison Square Garden in New York City. In 2012, Velez returned to Madison Square Garden to face Salvador Sánchez II, winning the WBC Silver Featherweight Championship. Velez has continued his winning streak through 2014, most recently taking down Miguel Soto in a second round technical knockout victory in April 2014 in Puerto Rico. Velez was last seen fighting Evegny Gradovich for the IBF World Featherweight title in November 2014, with the fight ending in a draw.

A professional since 2012, Daniel “Huracan” Ramirez of Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico is looking to add another win to his record when he faces Velez on June 4. Fighting in the U.S. in all of his 2014 bouts facing top prospects Guy Robb, Aaron Garcia, and Eric Hunter, the Mexican fighter is looking to impress in his first fight of 2015.

Carlos “The Solution” Morales made his LA FIGHT CLUB debut with a triumph victory over Santiago Guevara on March 6. A local fighter hailing from Highland Park, Calif., Morales has been undefeated in his last eight bout, three of which have been by knockout. He has a rough start in his professional debut in Montebello, Calif. against Allan Benitez, since then Morales has quickly bounced back, winning bout after bout. He hopes to continue his winning streak as he returns to The Belasco Theater on June 4

Hailing from the Bronx, New York, veteran fighter Emmanuel Gonzalez made his professional debut against Jean Ramos in December 2008 at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City. Since then, Gonzalez has proven himself a tough opponent remaining undefeated for seven years until his latest fight against Tevin Farmer in June of 2014. June 4 will mark Gonzalez’ first bout of 2015 and he is eager to prove that he is still a fighter to be feared when he takes on Carlos Morales at LA FIGHT CLUB.

One of the most exciting prospects in the sport, 19-year-old super featherweight Christian “Chimpa” Gonzalez has thrilled fans by winning each of his professional bouts by knockout, seven in the first round. Fresh from a sixth-round stoppage of Julio Sarinana at the inaugural LA FIGHT CLUB at The Belasco Theater on March 6, forced him to rise from the canvas for the first time to win. Now, Gonzalez is ready to please his fans in his second appearance in the Los Angeles series.

Darryl Hayes of Houston, Texas is looking to get on the winning track in his first fight of 2015. Having had a tough 2014 after returning to the ring from a four-year break, the fighter is known to go the distance in his bouts. Now, the fighter is looking to add a win to his record when he makes his 2015 debut.

Born in Garden City, Kansas, and raised in Los Angeles, Rafael Gramajo started boxing at the age of 11 in the same gym that saw the likes of Brandon Rios and Victor Ortiz. After an ambitious amateur career where he participated in around 100 fights, Gramajo decided to take his career to the next level, making his professional debut against Jimmy Small in April 2012. In 2014, Gramajo moved to Los Angeles to train out of the famed Westside boxing Club under the Saucedo Brothers. Boasting two impressive wins at Fantasy Springs in 2015, Gramajo will make his LA FIGHT CLUB debut on June 4.

Pablo Cupul is a tough fighter known for his endurance in the ring. A professional since 2009, the fighter has consistently stayed busy. Having last fought in June of 2014, against Oscar Negrete, Cupul is looking to add a win to his record when he faces Gramajo in his first fight of 2015.

Pablo Rubio, from Whittier, Calif., is set to make his professional debut at the June 4 edition of LA FIGHT CLUB. Rubio fought in the 2014 USA Boxing Junior and Youth Open in the youth lightweight class at 123 lbs. He has sparred with the likes of undefeated professional boxer Leo Santa Cruz. On June 4, Rubio is determined to make a strong start to his professional career and a name for himself with the win over his opponent.

Martin Regalado of Los Angeles is set to make his professional debut at The Belasco Theater on June 4 as he faces Pablo Rubio in his first pro 4-round super bantamweight bout.

“Training has been great. We had some dates moved on us, so we stayed at home for camp. We used a lot of different sparring partners and I have a new strength and conditioning coach. I did a lot of new things such as running the bleachers, some great ab work as well, ” said Webster.

Webster has been no stranger to layoffs as guys are not running fast to face the 6’4″ inch southpaw who has displayed good boxing ability and power.

“It frustrates me but I have been dealing with it my whole career. I know I should be a lot further along but now I have promoters and managers (D & D Management) that should help ease that problem. So with that in mind, I can’t wait to see what is to come.”

In Johnson, Webster is fighting a guy with a pedestrian record but that was not by choice.

“It is hard to get up for this opponent. We had at least 12 guys turn down the fight for one reason or another. There is nothing I can do to make guys fight me. I am just going into this fight to get a win and start fighting the upper echelon guys. I think I will come right back in July and we will be fighting for some regional titles.”

“I appreciate the support. I love my family and fans. This fight will end in a knockout. I am glad I can display this on national television and the world will finally recognize what they have been missing and that is that I am the best southpaw in boxing.”

GH3 Promotions features undefeated Middleweight Antoine Douglas, Super Middleweight’s Jerry Odom & Derrick Webster, undefeated Super Bantamweight Adam Lopez as well as Boxcino Jr. Middleweight champion John Thompson, undefeated Welterweight Jerrell Harris, undefeated Super Bantamweight Qa’id Muhammad, undefeated lightweight Oscar Bonilla, Heavyweight Natu Visinia and Light Heavyweight Lavarn Harvell to the GH3 Promotions stable.

Robert_Guerrero
AROMAS, CA(May 28, 2015)- Four-Division world champion, “Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (32-3-1, 18 KOs) hosted a media workout yesterday at the CrossFit Ranch to shed light on his upcoming fight with Aron Martinez. The 10-round main-event bout will take place at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif., June 6, 2015 and will air live on NBC starting at 3:00 p.m. ET/12:00 p.m. PT.

“All the hard training is done and now it’s time to zone in,” said Robert Guerrero. “Everyone should be watching the PBC on NBC June 6th because I believe this is going to be a crowd-pleasing fight. Aron Martinez is not coming to lay down. He’s had plenty of time to prepare for this fight and I’m expecting him to come out guns blazing. One thing is for sure, I’m going to be throwing some hard shots right from the opening bell. My goal is to bring an entertaining fight to the fans and let my hands go. Fight night can’t come soon enough.”

Headlining his second PBC on NBC, Guerrero wants continue fighting on a regular basis. Known for being an all-out action fighter, Guerrero feels he can close out the rest of 2015 with a bang.

“I can’t emphasize how important it is for me to be fighting back to back in just a couple of months,” Guerrero continued. “Staying active is crucial to any fighter. The more you fight the better you perform and I can feel the improvement in my whole fighting style. HERRERA VS. LUNDY LOS ANGELES PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

hank-lundy_harney
LOS ANGELES (May 29) – Former WBA Interim Super Lightweight Champion Mauricio “El Maestro” Herrera (21-5, 7 KOs) and titlist “Hammerin'” Hank Lundy (25-4-1, 12 KOs) of Philadelphia hosted a press conference in Los Angeles on Wednesday, May 28 to discuss their upcoming 10-round showdown on Saturday, July 11 for the NABF Super Lightweight Championship live on HBO Latino ® Boxing. Presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with CES Boxing, Herrera vs. Lundy will possibly be the last boxing match held at the historic Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena before it is demolished later this year.

Also joining Herrera and Lundy at today’s press conference were co-main event fighters Michael “The Artist” Perez (22-1-2, 10 KOs) of Newark, New Jersey and Las Vegas transplant Sharif “The Lion” Bogere (27-1, 19 KOs), who will open up the HBO Latino Boxing telecast to battle in 10-round lightweight match.

Here is what the fighters, their promoters, and others had to say at the press conference in Los Angeles on May 28:

MAURICIO HERRERA, Former Interim WBA Super Lightweight World Champion:

“Thank you to Golden Boy Promotions for taking a chance on me for my career. Last year was a tough year. Two of the fights I was robbed in. This fight on July 11 will be justice for Herrera.

“Who better than to fight this tough man, Hank Lundy. We are both hungry and not scared of anybody.

“Lundy says he’s coming to fight and box. This is going to be the last fight, and we are going to shut it down. I’m going to take him to school.

“I hope everyone enjoys the fight and can make it out July 11 to the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena.”

HANK LUNDY, Top Super Lightweight Contender:

“Every time I touch Mauricio with that glove it will bring pain. You are going to think about retiring after this fight. I’m ready to go to war.

“I hope Mauricio is in shape. But listen, I’m always in shape and always ready to go.

“That belt, I had it, and I’m bringing it home. This is a championship fight, and once I beat you, they will know who the real champion is: ‘Hammerin” Hank Lundy.”

ERIC GOMEZ, Senior Vice President of Golden Boy Promotions:

“These guys, Herrera, Lundy, Perez and Bogere, all have big hearts and will give it their all. These are going to be toe-to-toe wars on July 11. They will be fun to watch.

“We put a lot of time and effort in these fights. There is a lot of boxing on TV right now, and, how do you standout? You make great fights. We sit down with Oscar and our matchmaker Robert Diaz to make these great fights. Sometimes we spend hours debating the match ups.

“This kid they call ‘The Lion,’ Sharif Bogere has a great record. He is ranked by all the organizations as one of the top lightweights in the world.

“If you have never seen Michael Perez, you don’t want to miss this. He is an exciting fighter to watch. He is a hard fighter to handle.

“The best fighters have to fight the best. The only way you can do that is work with others. We have a great partner with CES Promotions for this fight July 11.

“Bernard Hopkins has always told us at Golden Boy Promotions, ‘you have to check out that hammer kid, that ‘Hammerin” Hank Lundy.’ He always talked about how dedicated he is, how serious he is about boxing. He comes from a tough town and they take their sports very seriously in Philadelphia.

“Herrera and Lundy are both top contenders knocking on the door for a world title. All that makes for a good fight. They are going to bring all that emotion in to the ring.”

Patrick Sullivan, Director of Operations at CES Boxing:

“I want to compliment the staff at Golden Boy. They are the best in boxing to work with.

“I urge everyone to come out and support the fight. Keep boxing alive out here.

“I called Hank and in typical Hank Lundy style, he said yes before I finished my sentence. This has been his MO from the beginning, he always says yes.

“He has had a lot of time to prepare for a fight, with two months, we will see the best hammering Hank we have ever seen. Hank has taken on all challenges, and he will take fights on short notice.

“With $10 tickets, that is a steal. You are going to get a great fight. Come out and support it. We are confident that Hank will be bringing the title back to Philly.”

MICHAEL PEREZ, Lightweight Contender:

“Me, as a fighter, I’m growing year by year. I’m young but I have a lot of experience to bring to this fight. I’m coming out to make a name.

“I am growing year by year. I am young but I think have a lot of experience to bring to this fight. I know the opportunity that is in hand.”

SHARIF BOGERE, Lightweight Contender:

“I want to thank you for being here. We are going to put on a great show, and I am ready. July 11, it’s going down baby. Don’t miss out.”

TONY WALKER, Director, HBO Sports:

“Thank you for coming out. It’s a great day in LA. This is an exciting match up that will be well received by our subscribers.

“We’re happy to work with GBP (Golden Boy Promotions) to bring this show to our HBO Latino channel. It deserves exposure, and the fighters deserve attention.”

ANASTASIA PALMER JOHNSON, Director of Booking, Business Development and Marketing, Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Sports Arena

“We’re excited to have this historic and exciting event on July 11 as what could be the last boxing match at the LA Sports Arena.”

BILL CAPLAN, Publicist for Golden Boy Promotions:

“Outside of Madison Square Garden and the Olympic Auditorium, I think the LA sports arena has the greatest history of a boxing arena in the US if not the world.

“The LA Sports Arena is scheduled to be torn down, this may be the last boxing show and possibly the last event at the arena ever. Closing with an important boxing show is as important as anything.

“You don’t want to miss this great show at the LA Sports Arena on July 11.”

JESSIE VARGAS HAS “EL TERRIBLE” NEWS FOR TIMOTHY BRADLEY!

moralessilver206
LAS VEGAS, NV (May 29, 2015) — Former four-division world champion and Mexican boxing icon ERIK “El Terrible” MORALES is the new trainer for undefeated World Boxing Association (WBA) super lightweight world champion JESSIE VARGAS. Morales, who received the call a few days ago, is already in Vargas’ Las Vegas-based training camp preparing him for the biggest fight of his professional career, against former two-division world champion TIMOTHY “Desert Storm” BRADLEY JR. Vargas (26-0, 9 KOs), a native of Los Angeles who now lives in Las Vegas, and Bradley (31-1-1, 12 KOs), from Palm Springs, Calif., will go mano a mano for the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight world title, Saturday, June 27, at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. The fight will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing®, beginning at 9:45 p.m. ET/PT.

These two gladiators boast a combined record of 57-1-1 (21 KOs) — a winning percentage of 97%.

“I am very religious so I began to pray for the right person to train me,” said Vargas. “Instantly, the name of Erik Morales came to me. I was able to track him down and he came right to our training camp in Las Vegas. I watched practically of all Erik’s big fights – the wars with Marco Antonio Barrera, the fights against Manny Pacquiao. Erik always fought hard and with all his heart. That’s who I want in my corner, someone who will give me everything they have to beat Bradley.”

“I’ve trained many fighters in Mexico. But Jessie is the best fighter I will be working with and this is the biggest fight, against Bradley,” said Morales. “We will win this fight. Jessie will put on pressure with intelligence and mix it up, using counter-punching. Bradley likes to go into his comfort zone in the ring. We will attack there too.”

Promoted by Top Rank®, in association with Tecate, remaining tickets to the Bradley vs. Vargas welterweight championship event, priced at $150, $75, $50 and $25, (plus applicable taxes and fees), can be purchased online at http://www.axs.com, by telephone at (888) 929-7849 or at the StubHub Center box office, Monday – Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Suites are available by calling (877) 604-8777. Farah “Quiet Storm” Ennis ready to make a loud statement tonight against Michael Gbenga in Philadelphia

Farah_Ennis
Philadelphia (May 29,2015)–Tonight at the Stadium Holiday Inn in Philadelphia, King’s Promotions presents a great night of boxing that will headlined by 10-round Jr. Lightweight bout between Frankie De Alba (15-1-2, 5 KO’s) and Bernardo Gomez Uribe (14-3, 10 KO’s).

In a six-round Super Middleweight bout Farah Ennis (21-2, 12 KO’s) will make his return to the ring after a 22 month hiatus when he takes on Michael Gbenga (20-19, 20 KO’s)

Ennis, who was last seen dropping a 10-round unanimous decision to new WBC Super Middleweight champion Badou Jack, is looking to get back into contention with a big outing over the veteran from Ghana.

“Training has been good. I only know that Gbenga is from Ghana,” said Ennis.

After what Ennis admitted was a lackluster performance against Jack, he needed some time away from the sport in order to get himself back on track.

“I took the time off to get my mind together. In that fight I didn’t let my hands go. I was thinking too much and I know I could have beat him. It just wasn’t my night.”

Ennis also took the time off to get into some training camps and improve on his own game.

“I was in camp with David Lemieux for when he fought Gabriel Rosado. It was during that time I got my head back and now is where I need to be. I need to go out and listen to my dad (Trainer Bozy Ennis). I am in 32 years old now. This is it. It is either all or nothing.”

“I just hope everyone comes out and supports as I am looking to put on a show and start the next phase of my career.”

Ennis weighed 167 pounds at Thursday’s weigh in. Gbenga checked in at 169.

In an 8-round bout, Steve Upsher Chambers (24-4-1, 6 KO’s) of Philadelphia will fight Alejandro Rodriguez (22-16-1, 8 KO’s) of Guadalajara, Mexico in a Jr. Welterweight bout.

In 6-round bouts:

Former U.S. Olympian, Raynell Williams (7-0, 4 KO’s) of Cleveland, OH will take on an opponent to be named in a Lightweight bout.

Welterweight Miguel Cruz (8-0, 7 KO’s) of Lake Mary, FL battles Juan Rodriguez (6-2-1, 5 KO’s) of Haymarket, VA..

Samuel Figueroa (7-0, 4 KO’s) of Ansco, PR will fight Jose Valderrama (4-9, 3 KO’s) of Arecibo, PR in a Welterweight bout.

Brandon Bennett (18-1, 7 KO’s) of Cincinnati, OH will square off with Rondale Hubbert (10-1-1, 6 KO’s) of Minneapolis, MN in a Lightweight bout.

Demond Nicholson (12-1, 12 KO’s) of Laurel, MD will battle German Perez (11-1, 3 KO’s) in a Middleweight bout.

Leo Hall (5-0, 5 KO’s) of Detroit, MI will risk his perfect mark against Lawrence Blakey (2-3, 1 KO) of Pennsylvania in a Light Heavyweight affair.

Caleb Plant (6-0, 5 KO’s) of Ashland City, TN will fight Jason Zabokrtsky (3-1, 3 KO’s) of Kansas in a Middleweight bout.

Rounding out the card in a 4-round bout will be Christopher Brooker (2-0, 2 KO’s) of Philadelphia fighting pro debuting Santario Martin of Gainesville, FL in a Super Middleweight bout.

(May 27, 2015) -Thompson Boxing Promotions is celebrating fifteen years in the boxing business and to commemorate this milestone, the Southern California-based promoter presents “Path to Glory,” a five-bout card featuring the always exciting Danny Roman (14-2-1, 5 KOs), a super bantamweight from Los Angeles, against Chris Martin (28-5-3, 9 KOs), a savvy tactician from San Diego (8-rounds).

The event originates this Friday from the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, Calif.

Roman is coming in blazing hot with six straight wins. The winning streak is certainly impressive, but what is more spectacular is the manner in which he is routing opponents.

He started the streak in 2014 with a second round knockout of Jose Angel Cota. In June, he followed up with a near shut out of Jonathan Arellano, a talented counter-puncher. Roman knocked him down twice in the eighth, and took home a unanimous decision with scores 80-70, 80-70, & 79-71.

Fast-forward to August, and Roman was busy knocking out Pedro Melo in the second round. One month later, he taught Jonathan Alcantara a boxing lesson by sweeping a unanimous decision with scores 80-72, all around.

“Last year was a tremendous year for me,” said the recently turned 25-year-old. “Everything slowed down for me. I was able to see things before they happened, which made me real comfortable, and it was easy to find my rhythm.”

This year Roman has continued his scorecard domination. In March, he faced the veteran Miguel Tamayo and managed to score knockdowns in the fourth and sixth rounds. He would cruise to a unanimous decision win, 80-70 all around. One month later, he out-boxed the far more experienced Giovanni Caro and left with his usual sweep of the scorecards (80-72).

“Will Danny continue adding wins in dominating fashion,” asked Ken Thompson, president and founder of Thompson Boxing. “That’s one of the most intriguing story lines of the event. Chris Martin is an advanced-level boxer and Danny is in for a difficult fight.”

“I know Martin is well experienced and he knows how to use angles to get inside,” Roman said. “I just have to stick with my game plan and not worry about the judges.”

Fans can purchase tickets, which are priced at $40, $60, & $100, by calling 714-935-0900, or going online at ThompsonBoxing.com.

In other action, one of Southern California’s most popular fighters, Efrain Esquivias (17-3-1, 10 KOs), jumps to the featherweight division to face the young Jose Haro (8-1-1, 6 KOs) of Salt Lake City. The fight is scheduled for eight competitive rounds.

In the other marquee match up, super bantamweight Juan Reyes (12-1-3, 2 KOs) of Riverside, Calif. brings his exciting brand of boxing to the more experienced Robert Castaneda (21-9-1, 15 KOs) of Mexico in an 8-round scrap.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. PT and the first bout starts at 7:45 p.m. PT. The Doubletree Hotel is located at 222 N. Vineyard Ave, Ontario, CA 91764, and can be reached at 909-937-0900.

McCreary has been training hard in Detroit as Miller will be his 4th consecutive and 7th overall undefeated opponent.

Because of the his past opponents, McCreary is giving himself a great shot to pull the upset.

“I am from Detroit. I am a soldier who won’t back down and I am coming to win. By the grace of god, I can pull the upset and further my career.”

Nine years younger than his brother Marcos, the 22-year-old Maidana is currently riding a five fight knockout streak. Representing Santa Fe, Argentina, he will take on Dyes out of Memphis.

Cancer survivor Bessette continues remarkable journey

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (May 28th, 2015) — The victory outside of the cage may always be the biggest for Hartford’s Matt Bessette.

He’s won 14 times as a professional in mixed martial arts, many under the bright lights of national television on the sport’s biggest stage, but the 30-year-old featherweight has gained crossover appeal for battling and conquering Leukemia at a young age.

Open and honest about his struggles as a child — the doctor’s visits, the sleepless nights with his mother at his bedside — Bessette has drawn a new legion of fans both in and out of the MMA community, a concept he still struggles to grasp every now and then.

“Every time someone reaches out to me,” Bessette said, “I think to myself, ‘Who the hell am I? I’m just a fighter.'”

But to many, he’s more than just “The Mangler,” the name most people know him as on fight night. To the young college student with Leukemia whom he visited on campus at the University of Connecticut, or the countless others whose day he’s brightened with something as simple as a reply, Bessette is an inspiration, an example of how life’s roadblocks don’t always have to derail your dreams.

“It’s inspiring for me, too,” said Bessette, who returns to the cage Friday, June 12th, 2015 on the main card of “CES MMA XXIX” live from Twin River Casino on AXS TV, “but at the same time, I’m lucky to be here myself. We’re all in this together.”

Diagnosed with Leukemia at the age of 3 and given a 50 percent survival rate by doctors, Bessette vividly recalls growing up with a disease responsible for more than 50,000 deaths per year. The memories are impossible to shake.

“Getting a spinal tap is terrible at any age,” he said, “but it’s the scariest shit in the world at 3 years old.”

Aside from his family’s constant positivity — “my mother would be at my bedside no matter the time of day, grinning ear to ear even when she was exhausted from work,” he recalls — his biggest survival tool was simply living life like everyone else his age. He played soccer, basketball and baseball as a child, competing in sports year round despite the cancer and chronic asthma. By the age of 11, he was cancer-free.

“I just never thought about it. I never thought of myself as the ‘sick kid,'” Bessette said.

“Nobody believed it. Even my closest friends at 20 and 21 were like, ‘You had Leukemia?'”

Bessette excelled as a multi-sport athlete, becoming the only player at Stafford High School in Connecticut to hit a home run out of his team’s stadium despite being a mere 130 pounds as a senior. While attending college at the University of Hartford, he took up MMA and eventually made his pro debut in 2007, the same year he graduated.

A brown belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Bessette quickly rose to the top of his weight class in the northeast, capturing the vacant Reality Fighting lightweight title in 2010 and debuting on the Bellator MMA circuit a year later with a win over Massachusetts vet Saul Almeida.

It was there he became a fan favorite, sharing his story with thousands of Bellator viewers who instantly identified with the humble, charismatic star. Around the same time he defeated Diego Nunes in 2014 on Spike TV, his career-high fifth consecutive win, the letters and emails began pouring in from fans who wanted to share their survival stories or simply ask for advice.

“People were messaging me about the type of cancer they had, or the cancer their child had,” he said. “It was pretty incredible.”

The college student he visited at UConn wound up cancer-free herself just a year later.

“She’s a beautiful person inside and out, very positive,” Bessette said. “I’m glad I got to meet her.”

Bessette has managed the newfound fame and admiration swimmingly while still maintaining his edge inside the cage. At 14-6 with three knockouts, Bessette continues to chase his dream of one day making it to the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC), a dream he realizes he shares with “every realistic full-time fighter.”

“I don’t see why I can’t make it there,” he said. “I’m prepared right now to fight any of those guys. It’s just a matter of getting there and staying there.”

Battling the politics often associated with combat sports could be his biggest hurdle.

“To be honest, I think it’s really about who you know. Listen to the [UFC] fight announcements. It’s literally the same 10 teams in the whole league, which really isn’t the case with other promotions,” said Bessette, who fights out of Underdog Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Hartford. “I’ve had 20 fights. I’ve fought every single person they’ve put in front of me. I’ve come out on top with a really good record. I’m hoping my luck changes.”

Making his CES MMA and AXS TV debut on June 12th against Pittsburgh featherweight Khama Worthy (7-3, 5 KOs) could be a step in the right direction. Since its inception in 2010, CES MMA has successfully promoted and developed the careers of many UFC contenders, including John Howard, Rob Font and Tateki Matsuda, among others.

“I’m really excited,” Bessette said. “Obviously, this is the top promotion in the northeast. Their popularity has increased quite a bit. Just to be a fighter with CES MMA is a big deal, let alone be a champion. If I can work my way up, smash a few people and get a title shot, that’d be huge.”

It’d be another remarkable achievement for a fighter who’s already accomplished so much both in and outside of the cage.

“As always, I’m feeling better and better than the last time,” he said. “I’m getting better and smarter. My approach to training has changed significantly over the years.

“I’m actually more comfortable fighting on TV,” he added. “Everyone gets nervous, but as soon as I see the crowd and hear the people chanting my name, I’m like, ‘OK, it’s here.’ I’m calm.

“I don’t consider this a job. I’ve been unemployed for three and a half years. I just get paid to have fun with my friends. It’s awesome.”

Let there be blood!”

“I’m eager to show the world that they haven’t seen the best of me yet,” said Hank Lundy. “Mauricio Herrera, I like him, because he reminds me of me, but on fight night I am not going to do him any favors. Later on July 12, Herrera earned the interim WBA Super Lightweight title when he dethroned Johan Perez via a majority decision. Fresh off a contested decision against Jose Benavidez on Dec. 13 in Las Vegas, Herrera lost the interim WBA World Super Lightweight title and is now determined to take the NABF title on July 11. Ranked by the WBC as one of the top contenders in the super lightweight division, Lundy has also faced some of the toughest fighters in the sport, going up against John Molina, former world champion David Diaz, and Raymundo Beltran. During a stretch between 2010 and 2014, Lundy fought nine of 11 bouts on national television (8 on ESPN and 1 on ShoBox) against opponents with a combined record of 232-18-3. Now, reunited with top trainer, Charles Ramey, who coached him during his undefeated streak, Lundy is ready to reclaim his place as a titleholder and will give the equally eager Herrera a tough fight at the L.A. These two veterans first squared off as part of ESPN’s Friday Night Fights series in April of 2011, going all 4 rounds without either man gaining the advantage. The action began as soon as the bell rang, with both fighters scoring a knockdown in the very first round. With both men looking settle the score once and for all, this 10-round main event has all the makings of another classic.

In the evening’s featured semi-main event, heavy-handed Marcelino Pineda (5-1 5KO’s) of Toppenish, Washington looks to further his climb up the rankings as he competes in only the second 5-round contest of his young career against talented Vancouver native, Virgil “The Black Mamba” Green (10-3 3KO’s). With Pineda’s jaw-dropping power being put to the test against his opponents decided reach advantage, fight fans packed into the EQC are in for a war that is sure to leave the showroom buzzing.

Also featured on the evening’s undercard will be Portland, Oregon’s Ray “Lightning Jr” Lampkin (7-0 2KO’s) making his long awaited return to the I-5 showroom against tough newcomer Andres Reyes (3-0) of Yakima. Both men will be looking to keep their unblemished record intact as they lock horns in a 5-round battle.

“This fight card is pretty amazing,” said promoter, Brian Halquist. “We have two fights that are rematches from draws in previous fights including the main event. This is unfinished business and those fights were fights of the night before and I have no doubt they will be fights of the night again. In addition we have two undefeated fighters putting it on the line with Lampkin vs. Reyes; Battle at the Boat 100 was a great card and to be honest, this is even better. It’s shaping up to be one of those special fight nights!”

The evening’s action will be rounded out with an additional three undercard fights including an exciting rematch between Jason Davis and Daryl Gardner who have unsettled business from their exciting undercard fight at Battle at the Boat 100.
