PRO BOXING BACK IN GLENDALE, CA ON MARCH 14TH

Top Rank, in association with Bash Boxing, Art of Boxing Promotions, and the Glendale Civic Auditorium in Glendale, California, brings Solo Boxeo Tecate on Unimas back to the “Jewel City” on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at 7:00pm.

Following up two sold out events in August and December, GLENDALE FIGHT NIGHT VII will once again feature prospects from the Top Rank stable as well as some of the Los Angeles area’s most promising pugilists in what is sure to be another capacity crowd at the Glendale Civic Auditorium.

Two exciting 8 round Super Featherweight bouts will be part of the televised broadcast of the Solo Boxeo Tecate series live on Unimas, as undefeated prospect Toka Khan Clary (14-0, 9KOs) takes on perennial spoiler Edwin “Tiburon” Solis (6-2-3, 4KOs) out of Pomona, California, and Sylmar, California’s Sergio “Tarasco” Nunez (12-1-1, 8KOs) faces off against Angel “Humilde” Rodriguez (11-1, 5KOs).

A highly decorated U.S. amateur standout, Rhode Island’s Toka Khan Clary has been blazing through the professional ranks despite just being 22 years of age. The fighter known as “T-Nice” possesses a perfect combination of speed, skill, and heart – the ingredients of yet another future World Champion for Top Rank. Standing in Clary’s way will be his biggest professional challenge to date in the tenacious and unbending Edwin Solis, who has gained a reputation as one of the toughest “outs” in the Super Featherweight division. Solis is no stranger to putting blemishes on the faces of his opponents and their records as he has gone undefeated (3 wins, 3 draws) since September of 2012 despite the combined records of his past six opponents being (57-8-5).

After traveling south of the border for his last 6 bouts in Mexico, Sylmar’s Sergio “Tarasco” Nunez will welcome the short drive down the Interstate 5 Freeway for his March 14th feature bout at GLENDALE FIGHT NIGHT. Nunez is a decorated amateur who made his professional debut at 18 and is also a boxing coach at American Fight Factory, one of San Fernando Valley’s largest Martial Arts gyms. As with most prospects appearing on GLENDALE FIGHT NIGHT, Nunez will also be facing one of the toughest challenges in his professional career as he meets Venezuela’s Angel “Humilde” Rodriguez
(11-1, 5KOs). Rodriguez will be making is U.S debut after campaigning his entire career in Mexico.

After witnessing 2012 London Olympics Silver Medalist Esquiva Falcoa perform twice in Glendale, local fight fans attending Glendale Fight Night VII now be treated to Olympic Gold as Russia’s Egor Mekhontsev, the 2012 London Olympics Gold Medalist in the Light Heavyweight Division, will appear on the card. Since turning professional in 2013, Mekohnstev has gone undefeated in 7 bouts with 6 of those bouts ending by knockout. Consistent with the theme of GLENDALE FIGHT NIGHT VII, Mekhontsev will be facing his toughest professional challenge to date as he faces off against Two-Time World Champion Challenger and former USBA and NABA Champion, Yusef Mack (31-8-2)

Rounding out the undercard will be the return of El Monte’s undefeated Welterweight Arnold Barboza Jr. (5-0), Duarte’s undefeated Super Featherweight Luis Sedano (4-0), Santa Ana’s Filipino sensation Gloferson Ortizo (2-0-1), Corona’s Ray Mena (1-0-1), and the return of Freddie Roach protégé, Cem Kilic (2-0).

GLENDALE FIGHT NIGHT VII, takes place on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at the Glendale Civic Auditorium, located at 1401 North Verdugo Road in Glendale, California.

Tickets can be purchased online at www.glendalefightnight.com or by calling

Quotes from Chilemba-Lepkihin Media Conference Call

Isaac Chilemba
[On his shorter training camp] First of all, I thank God for this opportunity. I am fighting on HBO and it is a dream come true. When I am back home, I always keep in shape so training in the United States is just a tune up for me before the fight. I am really looking forward to next week.

[On his game plan for Lepikhin] I am always ready for anything. We prepare for anything that might possibly happen in the ring. Lepikhin is a good fighter. He has good movement. He has a good jab. That is what training is there for. I don’t see anything to cause a problem in the fight. We will deal with what he brings us.

[On whether the close decisions he lost in the past have added pressure] I have learned from my close decisions in the past. My goal is not to give any opponent a chance that it could be close call again. I want to win every round from beginning to end. I don’t want to give any second thought as to whether or not I win the fight.

[What was his favorite win?] I value all my fights. Every win means a lot to me. They are all equal.

[On his dreams as a child in Malawi] My dream from the beginning has been to be the best in the world and to be best in my division. People talk about Muhammed Ali and Joe Frazier; I wanted to be like them. This is my dream coming true. I am getting closer. The closer I get to my dream the more I want to be one of the greatest in the world.

[On his toughest fight so far in his career] [Tony] Bellew was my hardest fight in my career. I defeated myself. I didn’t know who I was, what I was or what I was doing; I continued to fight with myself. I never thought that would happen in my life. It was a big learning point for me. I have to make sure I am mentally in good shape for this fight. I am always make sure I am in good shape physically.

[On fighting in the deeper rounds] My 12 rounds fights have taught me a lot. I don’t know how Lepikhin is prepared and whether he is tough enough to go the distance but I have been there. I always push myself to the max because I just want that win.

[On fighting in the United States and Canada] Here in America is the mecca of boxing. It is every African fighters dream to fight in America and get an American promoter. I am living that dream.

[On who he would like to fight next] My goal is to fight anyone who is on top. I think even the loser of Kovalev-Pascal will still be ranked higher up. I would love to fight the winner or [Adonis] Stevenson because I am ranked #2, even if I have to wait for that opportunity I know I am getting closer to the champ.

Vasily Lepikhin
[On Chilemba] First of all I am very happy to be fighting on HBO. It is all going to depend on the situation what will happen. I am going to do my work. I am not going to aim for anything. I am trying to win the fight.

[On his mental preparation] Chilemba is a better known fighter than me and this gives me more motivation. I want to show everyone I am a very good fighter and show the fans more good boxing. It is always important for me to look good in any fight and make fans like me. It doesn’t matter who else is there I am motivated for my fight with Chilemba.

[On pressure to secure the knockout] Basically, it really doesn’t matter to me if I am going to knockout my opponent or win by points. Most important to me is to win. I just want to show my boxing skills to the fans.

[On never going past ten rounds in his professional career] I am ready for all 12 rounds of this fight. I have already been 10 rounds and I don’t think two more rounds is much of a difference.

Egis Klimas, Manager of Vasily Lepikhin
[On following in Kovalev’s footsteps] Today every fighter would love to follow Sergey’s Kovalev’s footsteps, but probably nobody could do it. Nobody can follow [Floyd] Mayweather or [Mike] Tyson’s or Roy Jones, Jr.’s careers either. Every fighter is different. Every fighter dreams of fighting for the title and becoming world champion. Vasily is trying and wants to make his mark.

[On Chilemba] Isaac is a good fighter. He has been around for a long time. He has beaten good fighters but we are not worried about the other fighter. We worry about what we are going to do on March 14.

[On Lepikhin’s nickname “The Professor”] When he was fighting in his first professional fight, the promoter said he was very smart in the ring like a professor of boxing and that is where he got his nickname.

[On his struggles in his last fight] Jackson Junior is a good fighter but he wasn’t 100% healthy for that fight. He got very, very sick when he first arrived in Pennsylvania. There was deliberation about whether or not he was going to fight. I wasn’t there because I was with Sergey in Atlantic City [for the Hopkins fight] and his trainer decided he was going to take the fight. It isn’t an excuse. He travelled to the United States earlier for this fight so hopefully he won’t get sick in Canada.

Kathy Duva, CEO of Main Events
In this fight we have two light heavyweights here who are in their primes. We know welterweights have ruled boxing for the past ten years or so, but I think their time is coming to an end. I think light heavyweights are the future. This is a great fight with two terrific fighters and nobody can predict the outcome. I am excited to present this fight with my co-promoters from Canada, Interbox.

Congratulations are also owed to [Main Events’ matchmaker] Jolene Mizzone for putting together this amazing card. She has been working very hard with Interbox to put on an amazing show.

[On what is next for the winner] The winner clearly moves up in the rankings. It probably does not get them a title shot because the winner of Kovalev-Pascal is obligated to fight [Nadjib] Mohammedi and there is the WBC mandatory fight with [Adonis] Stevenson also in the mix. The winner, and the loser, will still be in the mix in the division though. First they have to fight each other. We are going to learn more about each of them from this fight. Nobody can predict the winner. Sergey presents great challenges to everyone. Our job is not only to promote Sergey Kovalev but to think about a future. We need to think about potential opponents for him. Both of these young men could end up fighting him in the future. Because both of them are with Main Events it will make this fight difficult for me to watch but great for the fans.

[On the possibility of more collaboration with Interbox] It has been a pleasure working with Interbox and hope to continue the relationship in the future.

[On fighting for the NABF belt even though neither fighter is from North America] Both their promoters are from North America and they both train here.

[On the light heavyweight division now that PBC has signed more fighters in the division] [Lucian] Bute has an obligation to fight Pascal next. I take the long view of things. I have seen people come and go and try to change the boxing industry. Golden Boy [Promotions] was the only up-and-comer to become a player. It is too far away to know what will happen in a year or so. The WBC has ordered [Adonis] Stevenson to fight the winner of Kovalev-Pascal next.

Jean Bedard, President of Interbox
[Statement from Bedard, who was unable to participate in the call] It is very important for us to offer our fans a quality product on March 14th and the addition to the card of a boxer with such enormous potential such as Vasily Lepikhin in a match against a world-rated contender is as exciting as it is strategic. We are also very happy to be able to further build on our relationship with Main Events moving forward past March 14th.

UFC® CONGRATULATES THE LABOR GOVERNMENT FOR REGULATORY CHANGE IN VICTORIA

ufc_title-belt_206
Melbourne, Australia – The UFC® today applauded the State of Victoria Labor Government for executing a ministerial directive designed to increase safety within the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA) by allowing the sport to be conducted in a much safer fenced-in enclosure. The directive was announced this morning at a press conference held by The Honourable John Eren, Minister for Sport, Tourism and Major Events. “This is a major milestone for mixed martial arts in Victoria, which will allow the sport to flourish while at the same time better protecting its competing athletes,” said Tom Wright, UFC Executive Vice-President and General Manager, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

Prior to the passing of today’s ministerial directive, MMA competitions in the State of Victoria were required to be conducted in boxing rings which were never designed for MMA competitions. The UFC uses a unique, octagon-shaped enclosure which prevents fighters from falling out of the structure or becoming entangled in the ropes as could occur with a boxing ring. “The Octagon® is purpose-built for MMA competition and was designed and developed to optimize safety and to create a level playing field. The UFC thanks the Labor Party for spearheading this initiative and focusing on the safety of the competitors,” added Wright.

With this new ministerial directive in place, the UFC confirmed that it will bring a global pay per view event, UFC 193, to Melbourne on Sunday, November 15, 2015 locally, to be broadcast live in North America on Saturday, November 14.

Since 2010, the UFC has hosted six live events in Australia with each experiencing tremendous success. Collectively, the six events have seen more than 75,000 fans in attendance and millions worldwide watching on Pay-Per-View and broadcast television. The three host cities to date – Sydney, Gold Coast and Brisbane – have had a cumulative gross gate of more than $12 million and millions more in economic impact. The UFC will host its seventh Australian event, UFC® FIGHT NIGHTTM: MIOCIC vs. HUNT, at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on May 10.

Quotes from some of Australia’s top mixed martial artists

No.5 ranked UFC heavyweight Mark Hunt (10-9-1, fighting out of Sydney)
“Just like a jockey needs a horse or a tennis player needs a racquet or a V8 driver needs a car – mixed martial artists, UFC fighters need the Octagon®. It’s our tool for competition – to make competition fair and safe. I’m excited that the UFC can now come to Melbourne and trust me, I want to be there competing to make sporting history.”

Robert Whittaker (13-4, fighting out of Sydney)
“This progress in Melbourne is an amazing opportunity for the Australian MMA community. The UFC is already bringing more events to Australia and this new destination opens up more opportunities for aspiring mixed martial artists. As a MMA fighter myself, it would be an honour and privilege to compete in Melbourne and make history!”

Vik Grujic (7-5, fighting out of Melbourne)
“MMA in Melbourne will no longer fall behind the rest of the world because of ignorance.”

Kyle Noke (fighting out of Albuquerque, USA via Dubbo, Australia)
“We now finally get the chance to fight in front of a home crowd in the sporting capital of Australia. This is a dream come true for me and the rest of the UFC competitors representing Australia around the world.”

Daniel Kelly (9-0 fighting out of Melbourne)
“It’s only fitting to have the fastest growing sport in the world in the sporting capital of Australia. Personally it would be a dream to compete in the UFC in my hometown.”

Brendan O’Reilly (5-1-1, fighting out of Brisbane)
“This is a momentous occasion for the sport of MMA in Victoria, Australia and the growth of the UFC worldwide. Melbourne has some of the most passionate sports fans in the world, and I can’t wait to fight in the UFC Octagon® in front of a live Victorian audience.”

Soa Palelei (22-4, fighting out of Perth)
“Being able to fight in the UFC is a dream come true. Being able to compete in Australia is the icing on the cake. I’m extremely proud to be Australian and being able to do what I love for my country is truly gratifying. With Melbourne now able to host the UFC, I can see MMA growing immensely and I cannot wait till Perth also gets on board.”

Richie Vaculik (10-4, fighting out Sydney)
“So good to hear that finally the Victorian government has come to its senses and allowed MMA to be performed in its safest environment: the Octagon®. I can’t wait to be a part of a spectacular UFC event in Melbourne.”

Alex Chambers (4-2, fighting out of Sydney)
“Fantastic news that the ban will no longer remain in Victoria for MMA bouts inside a fenced-in enclosure. There was a big misconception about what was actually banned, which I feel has hindered MMA in Australia although the sport was always legal. A really great day for all MMA athletes and fans, not just in Victoria but all of Australia”

Paul Andrade, Father/trainer of WBO Jr. Middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade responds to Erislandy Lara

Andrade Workout 2
Providence, RI (March 3, 2015)–The following is a response to WBA Super Welterweight champion Erislandy Lara from Paul Andrade, the father/trainer of undefeated WBO Jr. Middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade:

Dear Mr. Erislandy Lara:

In response to your comments, whoever wrote your response should get their facts correct.

When we listen to you, we see the final triumph of stupidity in this world. You are the only boxer that successfully brainwashed himself with false facts.

We were never in our life offered a fight on ESPN 2 to fight you. In fact, when I met you in that restaurant in New York, we even said that Demetrius would let his career develop and fight you for much more meaningful amount than $15,000. When was the last time you fought for $15,000? And you agreed with me.

Now the time is here for us to get together but all you talk about is a meaningless fight in a foreign country that you by just four points when Demetrius was just 17 and you were 21. On top of that, you know when an American goes to a foreign country his opponent always gets an extra five points. We saw it at the Pan Am Games, in the Olympics and whenever we have fought on foreign soil.

After seeing Demetrius talent level, you decided going to the Olympics would have been a failed effort and decided to turn pro.

As we all know, many times guys who have been beaten by an individual in the amateurs come back and open up a can of whoop ass when they fight as professionals.

I see you posted your long list of accomplishments, we all are fighters in development when we start but you claim we have not fought anybody and you have.

The only opponent that we have in common is Vanes Martirosyan. We have the utmost respect for him and the best you can do was pull out a draw. I guess you were happy that headbutt occurred because Vanes was on his way to knocking you out. Then comes Angulo. The moment he trapped you, he dropped you twice and again then you escaped because of a lucky thumb that swelled up Angulo’s eye. How many times will luck be on your side?

Now it is time for you to man up and take the challenge. Forget the cheap talk, do you want to get it on? Yes or No? A real man and a real champion would answer yes.

Sincerely,

Paul Andrade

Laila Ali to be Inducted into IWBHF 2015 Class July 11, 2015 – Hyatt Regency Pier 66 Hotel Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, USA

PORTLAND, OR – (March 3, 2015) Laila Ali, who in the early and middle years of the new century, was the acknowledged “face” of Women’s boxing during what will likely be remembered as the final flourishing time for the sport in the United States, will enter the International Women’s Boxing Hall of Fame as part of the 2015 class. Ali will be joined by other “modern era” boxers, Laura Serrano, Jeannine Garside, Ann Wolfe, Deirdre Gogarty and Terri Moss along with NYSAC referee Sparkle Lee and Phyllis Kugler (posthumous), a pioneer boxer in the 1950s. The induction ceremony will be held on Saturday, July 11 in the Crystal Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six in Fort Lauderdale, FL (3:00-6:30 PM). Similar to the 2014 ceremony, this year’s induction will be conducted in conjunction with the National Women’s Golden Gloves tournament.

http://www.wbanmedia.com/iwbhf/picts/zzzlaila-ali2iwbhf380.jpg

“I’m honored to be recognized for induction into the Hall of Fame.” That’s Laila Ali, late last week, on the phone from her California home, speaking about her inclusion in the IWBHF’s second class. “I’m especially pleased that this recognition comes from my peers and is indicative of what they think of me, particularly those boxers who worked so hard and long beside me during a time when we took the sport of Women’s boxing to the levels we achieved.” It was during those “levels we achieved” that the Women’s boxing reached peaks of fan interest and media coverage, with Ali as the centerpiece, that would be welcomed, unconditionally, by the sport today but which, however, seem to be consigned to history.

The perception of Laila Ali changed markedly following her tenth professional fight, a June 2001 win over Jacqui Frazier Lyde in upstate New York. The eight round bout far exceeded the expectations of many boxing “experts” who foresaw an over-hyped exhibition by two “boxing daughters.” Today, Ali continues to view the bout with some regret, “I had a fever that night, but the furthest thing from my mind was dropping out. Although I won I had been hoping for a KO, but Jacqui fought tough that night. Following the bout I was out for a year rehabbing an injury and there continued to be a great clamor for a return bout. Instead I came back with a decision over Shirvelle Williams (June 2002). Looking back, I should have taken Jacqui again, that was a mistake.

Two months later, Ali won her first title (IBA super middleweight) with a two round TKO of Suzie Taylor. “It was an easier bout than I thought it would be and next was Valerie Mahfood, along with two more belts (WIBA and IWBF super middleweight)”. Ali was beginning her ascendance to the top of the sport and she was not just winning each bout, she was outclassing each opponent. “Honestly, and I don’t mean this disparagingly because I respected each of my opponents, but they were simply not at my skill level.” Beginning with the Taylor fight and ending in February 2007 with a first round TKO of Gwendolyn O’Neil, Lalia Ali completed her 24 bout professional career with 13 straight wins, all KOs. Asked about any difficult opponents over her career, the name that surfaced several times during our talk was that of Kendra Lenhart, “she was as tough as they came; big, strong, with punching power. Lenhart hit me as hard as I was hit in the ring. She could punch, but, fortunately, I had the boxing skills to beat by decision (October 2000).

Given that Ali, in 2007, seemed to be at the peak of her skills while maintaining a dominant position at the top of the middleweight division, if not the entire sport of Women’s boxing, why did she retire? “I was at a point where I felt there was little, if anything, left for me to achieve. In my next to last fight (November 2006), I fought in the Garden (Shelley Burton) which was, obviously, very meaningful for me in an number of ways and, yet, I came away from the bout (TKO 4) feeling it was just not competitive. I knew it and probably the fans knew it. I didn’t want to keep going through those type of bouts because I trained very hard for every fight and the return on that type of hard work just wasn’t there.”

What about Ann Wolfe? Ali’s reply is quick, direct and forceful, noticeable even over a phone line from a continent away, “So much has been written about that and the fact is that I tried to make that bout, but it was always something from the other side that would come up and make agreement impossible. And then when the bout didn’t happen, all the talk would begin about how I was afraid to get in the ring with Wolfe. Does anyone, honestly believe I was ever afraid to get in the ring with a female boxer? After a while, it just wasn’t worth going through all the nonsense. But, I’ll be honest, it bothered me then, it bothers me now and, at one point, I seriously considered coming out of retirement to make the fight, just to end it for once and for all.”

Asked whether she has any interest in a future connection with the sport of boxing, Ali, once more shoots out an answer straight from the shoulder, like a perfect left jab, “I’ve had quite a few opportunities over the years to manage, train, promote in the sport. But, honestly, I really have a difficult time recommending boxing to young athletes, particularly females. They look at my career and the success I had in the ring and assume I’ve got some secret formula for how to get to the top. They have no idea just how hard it is in a sport where a fighter is completely on her own. There’s no player’s association or a union in boxing to protect the fighters and far too many of those a boxer comes into contact with are simply trying to figure how much money they can make off the fighter. I received an education in that end of the sport following my divorce from my first husband and manager when I was forced to get involved with promoters, matchmakers and all the various others associated with putting together my bouts. It was an exhausting process and after all that I still had to go out and fight. If I find a girl who really seems determined to give the sport and honest try, of course, I’ll give her some advice. But, believe me, that advice won’t be any fairy tale version of what it’s like to succeed in a sport where it’s particularly hard to make a good living, especially for a woman.

Therein lies the essence of Laila Ali: ask her a question, you get an answer; not a politically correct, nuanced or parsed answer, but a “here’s what I think, because it’s what I know to be true” answer. It’s the way Laila Ali has always done “business” in and out of the ring, straight forward, do the work and what’s next.

“To fit into an appropriate place” is the dictionary definition of the word “belong”. The word applies comfortably to the eight women who will be inducted into the International Women’s Boxing Hall of Fame in July, just as it did to the seven women who were so honored in the initial class last year. But it seems to me that maybe, just maybe, that definition applies with just a slight bit more resonance to Laila Ali. The boxing ring, given her heritage, was a particularly appropriate setting and she not only fit but excelled to a level that has seldom been equaled and may never be surpassed. As for the IWBHF, in a word, Laila Ali belongs.

Salita inks Kazakh Knockout artist Bakhtier Eubov

Brooklyn, NY (March 3, 2015)–Salita’s Promotions is excited to announce another future star has been added to their roster.

Now opponents who will be getting in the ring with Bakhtiyar Eyubov, they might not be so excited, because the prospect is by all accounts a power hitter.

Eyubov, 5-0 as a professional, with five knockous to his credit, comes from Kazakhstan, the same homeland as middleweight superstar Gennady Golovkin. Like Golovkin, Eyubov looks to remove the judges from the equation. Indeed, he gets going from the opening bell, as four of his five KOs have come in round one.

With over 150 wins in the amateurs, a vast majority by KO, it is clear that his style will fit into the pros quite well, and Salita is excited to let New York City-area sweet science fans check him out in the near future.

Eyubov has already enjoyed a reputation as a fearsome banger, so he’s had to agree to fights from 147 pounds all the way up to light heavyweight, 175 pounds, to entice foes to glove up with him. The 28-year-old hitter is summed up thusly by promoter Salita: “He is an aggressive body puncher and aims to get the KO every time. Eyubov has an exciting style and he is very hungry to climb to the top and be a world champion.”

Eyubov will be managed by Wilson Naranjo, who manages ex champion Luis Collazo and world-rated contender Raphael Vasquez.

Salita will soon announce his next professional fight card, and when we can see the talents of the prospect Eyubov for ourselves.

***CAMP NOTES*** BRONCO BILLY WRIGHT

LAS VEGAS (March 3, 2015) – 50-year old WBC #17 heavyweight contender, “Bronco” Billy Wright (46-4, 37 KOs), is less than two weeks away from his upcoming 10-round main event bout with Gilberto Matheus Domingos (22-2, 20 KOs). The bout takes place at the We Ko Pa Casino in Fort McDowell, Arizona on the RJJ Boxing Promotions card March 13, 2015. Bronco Billy Wright gives his thoughts on training camp and defending his WBC LATIN AMERICAN and FECARBOX titles.

Bronco Billy on training camp preparations….
“Training camp has been tough this time around. I’ve been working really hard to get in the best shape of my life. My trainer Rafael Garcia Jr. has me doing some out of the box training methods that has been real beneficial to my boxing style. We are finishing up our last days of sparring this week. I’ll be ready to bring it next Friday.

Bronco Billy gives his thoughts on his bout with Domingos….
“I know Domingos is going to be looking for the knockout as am I, so we’ll see who lands the first bomb. Like in all my fights, I’ll be looking to end the fight early. If I need to go some extra rounds, I’m ok with that, as I’m in good boxing shape. He’s going to taste some my power, that’s for sure.

Bronco Billy comments on defending his WBC titles….
“Defending my WBC LATIN AMERICAN and FECARBOX titles is a pretty big deal for me. It’s my leverage to compete at the top level as I try to crack the top ten in the WBC. Right now I’m at #17, but I plan to move up with each fight this year.

Bronco Billy discusses being a 50-year old heavyweight contender….
“At this age I feel stronger then I was when I was younger. It’s that old man strength I guess you can call it. I’m smarter, wiser and more discipline at this stage in my career. I have a goal to become the heavyweight champion of the world and motivation is greater than ever. A lot of these top contenders are shying away from fighting me. I just want to earn my opportunity and fight the best.

Training Camp Notes: Glazkov A World Away from His Home Country of Ukraine But Focused on Cunningham and the Chance at a World Title

Vyacheslav Glazkov
Oxnard, CA:
On March 14 Vyacheslav “Czar” Glazkov will face Steve “USS” Cunningham for the #1 position in the IBF and the USBA Heavyweight Title as the co-feature on the Kovalev-Pascal HBO World Championship Boxing® telecast. Although Cunningham is a formidable opponent, the 30-year old from Lugansk, Ukraine faced much bigger adversity outside of the ring over the last year.

Early in 2014, Czar won the biggest fight of his career when he defeated veteran Tomasz “Goral” Adamek in a 12-round unanimous decision to secure the IBF North American Heavyweight Title. Shortly thereafter, along with his wife and daughter, he immigrated to the United States from war-torn Ukraine. They had difficulty crossing over the border into Russia, but were finally able to make it to sunny Florida to start their new lives as American residents.

Back home in Ukraine, things continued to be tumultuous for Glazkov’s family. Before his Aug. 9 fight with Derric Rossy, Czar had not heard from his parents for over two weeks. This was especially difficult for Glazkov whose father, Valerii Glazkov, usually attends all of his fights. Despite worrying about his family in Ukraine and an ailing hand, which still had not healed from his battle with Adamek, Glazkov managed to defeat Rossy via a 10-round majority decision.

After the fight, Glazkov received word that his parents were safe. His father made the trip to the United States for Czar’s next fight in Atlantic City on the Kovalev-Hopkins undercard. The elder Glazkov watched from ringside as his son stopped Darnell Wilson in the seventh round.

Unfortunately, not everyone in Glazkov’s family survived the unrest in Ukraine. Recently, on a media conference call, Czar talked about his grandmother: “I lost my grandmother; she was killed in the street during one of the bombings. Of course it was always distracting to talk with my family back there.” But he added, “Right now I am concentrated 100% and I am here, I am training, I am ready.”

For the Rossy and Wilson fights, Glazkov worked with world-renowned trainer, John David Jackson, the same trainer that works with Main Events’ stable mate and WBO, WBA and IBF Light Heavyweight World Champion Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev. When Glazkov found out his fight against Steve Cunningham for the mandatory position in the IBF and the USBA Heavyweight Championship would be on the same card as Kovalev vs. Pascal, he thought about what would be best for his preparation. He said, “John David Jackson was so busy with Sergey [Kovalev]. I decided I needed to go with a new trainer. Instead of going with somebody completely new, I chose someone from the past that I used to work with. We are clicking together good.” Glazkov was referring to his former trainer, Victor Petrochenko.

To work with Petrochenko, Glazkov had to travel to Oxnard, CA from Sunny Isles, FL, where he lives with his family. Despite once again training thousands of miles away from his wife and daughter, Glazkov is focused on Cunningham. “Cunningham is a very experienced fighter. He is a very good fighter. That is why I have to prepare 100% for the fight. Good fight. Good opponent. Will be a good night.”

The winner of this fight will face the winner of the WBA, WBO and IBF Unified Heavyweight Championship fight between Wladimir Klitschko and Bryant Jennings. Both Glazkov and Cunningham worked as Klitschko’s sparring partners. Czar does not want to predict who will win the Klitschko-Jennings fight, but said, “I am facing Steve Cunningham. I can’t predict what is going to happen, but I would love to go and face Klitschko. I got good experience sparring with Klitschko. If I am going to fight him next, that experience will give me insight to fighting him.”

About Kovalev vs. Pascal
Kovalev vs. Pascal is a 12-round fight for the WBO, WBA and IBF Light Heavyweight World Championship Titles. The fight will be televised as part of a live triple header on HBO World Championship Boxing® Saturday, March 14 from the Centre Bell in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Tickets are on sale now at the Centre Bell ticket office, at www.evenko.ca, by telephone at 1-855-310-2525 or through Club de Boxe Champion 514-376-0980. Vazquez and Marquez delivered yet again in their second meeting just five months later in yet another old-school, bloody slugfest that produced a Round of the Year winner –the third– and a result that demanded a rubber match.

Vazquez-Marquez III, contested just 363 days from their first meeting, was a celebration of boxing at its finest, the only match in the rivalry to go the distance and the 2008 Fight of the Year. The two would meet for the fourth and final time again in 2010.

Erislandy Lara responds to Demetrius Andrade – I already whopped that ass for free in the amateurs

Erislandy Lara
HOUSTON, TX (March 2, 2015) – WBA Champion, Erislandy “The American Dream” Lara, responds to WBO Champion Demetrius Andrade’s claims that he’s not interested in a unification fight with him.

“I’ll fight him anytime! My resume speaks for itself. I’m willing to fight Cotto or GGG next…you think I’m worried about this little spoiled brat? Look at my resume of great fighters I’ve fought, Williams, Molina, Vanes, Trout, Canelo, Angulo and now Smith. In 24 fights, who has he fought?”

Lara went on to say about Andrade latest drama about pulling out if his last scheduled fight…

“I’m the best in the division. If I put my name to a contract I show up and fight, unlike him when he pulled out of the biggest fight of his career against Charlo. Not to mention, he turned down a fight with me on ESPN2 years ago when I was willing to whoop to put a beating on him for $15.000. And don’t forget, I already whooped that ass for free in the amateurs!!! His nickname serves him right…He’s Poo Poo!”

TWO TITLE FIGHTS HEADLINE UFC® 187 AS JONES MEETS JOHNSON AND WEIDMAN COLLIDES WITH BELFORT MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND

ufc_title-belt_206
Las Vegas – On Memorial Day Weekend, two world title fights headline UFC® 187 as undisputed light heavyweight king Jon “Bones” Jones meets No. 1 contender Anthony “Rumble” Johnson in the five-round main event. Plus, middleweight champion Chris Weidman puts his belt on the line when he faces former light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort Saturday, May 23 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

The pound-for-pound king, Jon Jones (21-1, fighting out of Albuquerque, N.M.) continues to smash records and make history as he goes for an unprecedented ninth successful UFC light heavyweight title defense. Undefeated in his last 12 bouts, Jones is currently tied for second place with Georges St-Pierre for the longest active winning streak, just behind former middleweight champion Anderson Silva with 17. Jones is on a path to become arguably the greatest fighter of all-time, having defeated both former legends and rising stars, with his most recent victory coming after a five-round war against U.S. Olympian Daniel Cormier at UFC 182. Looking to further etch his name in the record books, Jones gladly welcomes the challenge of facing the hardest-hitting opponent of his career at UFC 187.

Since making his UFC return in 2014, (No. 1) Anthony “Rumble” Johnson (19-4, fighting out of Boca Raton, Fla.) has gone 3-0, collecting two first-round finishes over former title challenger Alexander Gustafsson (TKO at 2:15 of round 1 at UFC Fight Night® in Stockholm) and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (KO at 0:44 seconds of round 1 at UFC on FOX in San Jose), while also delivering a masterful performance against seventh-ranked Phil Davis at UFC 172. A nine-fight win streak, coupled with dominant wins over top tier talent, has earned Johnson a chance to challenge the pound-for-pound king for the light heavyweight world title.

In what will be an electric co-main event, middleweight champion Chris Weidman (12-0, fighting out of Baldwin, N.Y.) will put his spotless record on the line when he faces the fourth-ranked Belfort, who has been anxiously awaiting his shot at the belt. After doing the seemingly impossible by beating former champion Anderson Silva twice, Weidman went on to defend his title in spectacular fashion against former light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida at UFC 175. The five-round battle earned the pair a Fight of the Year nomination and cemented Weidman’s place in the pound-for-pound rankings (No. 4). With victories over many of the sport’s elite, the New Yorker looks to add another notable name to his resume when he takes on one of his most ferocious opponents to date.

Determined to hold titles in two weight classes, former 205-pound champ (No. 4) Vitor Belfort (24-10, fighting out of Boca Raton, Fla. by way of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) has been destroying his competition as of late, and at 37 years old, has never looked better. In his most recent outings, “The Phenom” defeated both Dan Henderson and Luke Rockhold in the first round following his incredible second-round TKO victory over Michael Bisping in January 2013. Weidman and Belfort have been slated to meet on three separate occasions, and the two will finally go to war on May 23.

Other bouts for UFC 187 include:
· Undefeated lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov returns from a lengthy layoff (22-0, fighting out of Dagestan, Russia) to face No. 3 Donald Cerrone (27-6, 1NC, fighting out of Albuquerque, N.M.), a winner of seven straight.

· In a battle of heavyweights, third-ranked Travis Browne (17-2-1, fighting out of Glendale, Calif.) collides with (No. 7) Andre Arlovski (23-10, 1 NC, fighting out of Chicago, Ill.).

· Ninth-ranked welterweight Dong Hyun “Stun Gun” Kim (19-3-1, 1 NC, fighting out of Busan, South Korea) meets Josh Burkman (28-11, fighting out of Draper, Utah).

· Former title challengers Joseph Benavidez (21-4, fighting out of Sacramento, Calif.) and John Moraga (16-3, fighting out of Phoenix, Ariz.) hit the stage in a flyweight scrap.

· Plus, the flyweight division’s No. 1 contender and TUF season 14 winner John Dodson (17-6, fighting out of Albuquerque, N.M.) makes his return against (No. 9) Zach Makovsky (19-5, fighting out of Philadelphia, Penn.).

· In their UFC debuts, newcomers Leo Kuntz (17-1-1, fighting out of Coconut Creek, Fla.) and Islam Makhachev (11-0, fighting out of Dagestan, Russia) square off in a 155-pound bout.

Team Andrade to Lara, “Let’s Fight”

Andrade UK 2
Providence, RI (March 2, 2015)–After WBO number-one ranked Jr. Middleweight, Jermell Charlo decided to not fight fight WBO Jr. Middleweight champion Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade, Andrade’s father/trainer Paul has turned his attention to a fight with WBA belt holder Erislandy Lara.

“We signed a contract to fight Charlo a month ago,” said Paul Andrade. “He opted to fight a guy that we beat already in Vanes Martiroysan. I don’t even think Charlo will beat him. I can see Vanes out bullying him and win a decision about eight rounds to four.”

“That’s in the past and now we have to look towards the future.”

That future hopefully includes Lara.

“The real fight for us is with Lara. Fighting Charlo would not have done much for us anyway. That would have been like a man fighting a boy.”

“We are calling Lara out but he has had no response. He doesn’t have a dance partner, so the time is right for both of us.”

Andrade believes turn about is fair play for the Cuban as he talked his way into a fight with Canelo Alvarez last year and now it’s time for him to be on the receiving end of somebody ready, willing and able to fight him.

“Lara thought he was cute by calling out Canelo by going to his press conference. He and trying to embarrass him and goad Canelo into a fight. Lara is now in that position. We would go to one of your press conferences and embarrass you but you don’t even have a fight on the table, so there is no press conference for you.”

“Why don’t you step up like Canelo and be a man and accept our challenge like Canelo did for you.”

“I guess it’s not so cute for him anymore. And if you do step to the plate, you can bring your running shoes because you are a better runner then boxer.”

Said Arthur Pelullo of Banner Promotions, co-promoter of Andrade, “This is a fight that Demetrius wants. Last year he wanted wanted a fight with Canelo. Canelo had and has other plans now so why not fight the man who some people believe beat him in Lara.”

“We feel Demetrius is the best jr. middleweight in the world and the way to prove that is to fight the best. Erislandy Lara has proven to be at the top of the division. This is the type of fight that will show the boxing world that Demetrius is a star.”, said co-promoter, Joe DeGuardia of Star Boxing.

I came back to the U.S. in 2013 and I stopped an undefeated champion, Abner Mares. Now I’m back and once again I’m facing a tough opponent. Russell is not an easy test, but I’m confident I’m going to surprise everybody once more. Nobody thought I had a chance in 2013 and I stripped Mares of his title. Food for thought.”

“I’m blessed to be back on this stage, fighting once again for a world title,” said Russell Jr. “I came up short at my first opportunity for the title and that has me more motivated than ever to get the job done on March 28. I will finally hold up my very own belt.”

“I love fighting on SHOWTIME and I’m excited to put on a show for the fans in Las Vegas,” said Charlo. “I have a tough opponent, people think I might not be ready, but on March 28, they’re going to know that I’m taking over the sport.”

“This is a great opportunity for me and I’m just thankful to get the chance to showcase my talents,” said Martirosyan. “Charlo is a tough kid, but I’ve been around this sport longer and I’m going to show him some things he’s never seen before. The fans better get ready for an awesome show.”

“This edition of SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING is guaranteed to be action-packed,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment, promoter of the event. “The main event presents the classic boxer versus puncher matchup, with the slick, talented former Olympian Russell looking for redemption and the title against reigning, three-time world champion brawler Gonzalez. The co-feature between Charlo and Martirosyan is a highly competitive clash of styles. A big fight is in the future for the winner of this bout.”

“March 28 should be a tremendous night of fights to kick off a stacked run of boxing on SHOWTIME and CBS,” said Stephen Espinoza, Executive Vice President & General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports. “Both bouts on the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast have world title implications. The main events matches the one-punch knockout power of world champion Jhonny Gonzalez versus the speed of Gary Russell, who is one of the most skilled boxers in any division. And with Jermell Charlo vs. Vanes Martirosyan, we have a matchup of two top 154-pounder contenders, each on the verge of a world title opportunity.”

“Boxing continues to be a major draw for Las Vegas,” said Billy Conn, Vice President of Entertainment and Special Events for The Pearl at Palms Casino Resort. “The Pearl is one of the most intimate venues where you can catch those world class athletes in action.”

One of the best Mexican fighters of this era, Mexico City’s Gonzalez has held world championships at 118 and 126 pounds, defeating the likes of Hall-of-Famer Mark “Too Sharp” Johnson and former world champions Fernando Montiel, Irene Pacheco, and Hozumi Hasegawa, along the way. The 33-year-old Gonzalez’ last loss came in 2012 to Daniel Ponce De Leon, but he has won his last five fights, including a shocking 2013 first-round knockout over defending beltholder Abner Mares resurrecting his career. He has defended the title twice in Mexico and now he returns to the U.S. in a very tough defense on March 28.

A supremely talented boxer, Capitol Heights, Maryland’s Russell Jr. is looking to strike world championship gold in his second shot at a belt. The 2008 U.S. Olympian looks to wipe out the memory of his first opportunity, when he fell by 12-round majority decision to Vasyl Lomachenko. He was able to return to his winning ways in December 2014, when he dominated Christopher Martin on his way to a unanimous decision. Now Russell Jr. has his eyes set on Gonzalez’ featherweight crown.

Younger-by-one-minute than his identical twin Jermall, Charlo is also a highly ranked young fighter looking to get one step closer to a world title shot. A tall fighter for his division, Charlo stepped up in class in 2014 and delivered three wide unanimous decision victories over Gabriel Rosado, Charlie Ota and Mario Lozano. On March 28, he takes on another tough challenge when he meets the experienced Martirosyan.

Born in Armenia, but fighting out of Glendale, Calif., Martirosyan represented the U.S. at the 2004 Olympics and has put together a stellar pro career since. He won his first 32 fights before fighting current world champion Erislandy Lara to a draw in 2012. He suffered a narrow defeat by split decision in his first world title shot against Demetrius Andrade but has rebounded with nice wins over Mario Lozano and Willie Nelson.

The event takes place at The Pearl at Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas and will air on SHOWTIME (10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT). In the co-main event, Jermell Charlo takes on Vanes Martirosyan in super welterweight action. The SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast will also be available in Spanish via secondary audio programming (SAP).

Bellator MMA statement on Quinton “Rampage” Jackson

Today, Bellator MMA was compelled to go to court to stop Quinton “Rampage” Jackson from fighting in an April 25th bout promoted by Bellator’s competitor, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Jackson, who has completed only three fights of his exclusive six-fight contract with Bellator, is barred by contract from fighting for any promoter other than Bellator. Our lawsuit for an injunction and related relief – filed in the Chancery Division of the Superior Court in Burlington County, New Jersey – will compel Jackson to honor his contractual agreement. We look forward to having one of our MMA stars fighting for Bellator again.

IRELAND’S MIDDLEWEIGHT CONTENDER SPIKE O’SULLIVAN ADDED TO “McMAYHEM IN MIDTOWN” CARD

New York, NY (3/2/15) – Fresh off his victory this past Thursday in Boston, Mass., Ireland’s once-beaten middleweight title contender Spike O’Sullivan (19-1, 12KO’s) has been added to the eagerly anticipated “McMayhem in Midtown” card, held on Saturday, March 14, at the Theater at Madison Square Garden. The event, promoted by DiBella Entertainment, Murphy’s Boxing, Ring of Fire Promotions and FDNY Bravest Boxing will feature both professional and amateur bouts, and is headlined by former world-title challenger Patrick “The Punisher” Hyland (29-1, 13KO’s) taking on Manuel de los Reyes Herrera (21-15-1, 15KO’s). The co-feature bout of the evening sees the long-awaited return of popular light heavyweight contender-turned-New York firefighter Will “Power” Rosinsky (17-2, 9KO’s) as he squares off against Paul Gonsalves (7-5, 3KO’s). The amateur portion of the card will mark the third meeting between the FDNY Bravest Boxing team and Garda Siochana Boxing team of the Irish National Police Force, who will be making the trip over from Ireland with the 2015 Transatlantic championship at stake.

Tickets for “McMayhem in Midtown” are priced at $100, $65 and $35, and can be purchased by calling the DiBella Entertainment office at (212) 947-2577. Tickets may also be purchased by visiting www.murphysboxing.com. Doors open at 7:00 PM, with the first bout scheduled for 7:30 PM.

O’Sullivan, hailing from Cork, Ireland, is promoted by Ken Casey’s Murphys Boxing. Casey, the lead singer for platinum-selling American Celtic band, The Dropkick Murphys, began working with the popular Irishman following his loss to the undefeated WBO #1-ranked middleweight Billy Joe Saunders. In November of last year, O’Sullivan scored arguably his best victory to date, a devastating first-round TKO over perennial contender Anthony Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald had previously gone the distance with both former interim WBA middleweight champion Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam and current WBO middleweight champion Andy Lee.

With a cult-like following along the entire Eastern seaboard, Casey has used the band’s popularity to build O’Sullivan’s fan base here in the U.S. and a raucous crowd is expected to be on hand for his New York City debut.

“I love new adventures and St. Paddy’s weekend in New York is going to be electric,” said O’Sullivan. “On March 14, I intend to entertain the fans and show them what I can do in the ring. I will aim to send them home wanting to come see me fight again and feeling that they got great value for their ticket money.”

“Spike is an awesome guy and a great exciting fighter to watch. I am excited for the New York fans who will get their first chance to see Spike in action,” said Casey.

In anticipation of his New York debut, O’Sullivan will make his way to the empire state a couple of weeks early, and spend time meeting with fans at the Dropkick Murphys at Irving Plaza in Manhattan on March 8th, 9th and 10th. Tickets for the card will also be available for purchase at these shows.

An opponent for O’Sullivan will be named shortly.

Stars collide in Hawn-Loffer main event

LINCOLN, R.I. (March 2nd, 2015) — Rick Hawn can’t help but smile.

A 14-time vet of the Bellator Fighting Championships, Hawn (19-4, 11 KOs) didn’t make his professional mixed martial arts debut until the age of 32, a late start by anyone’s standards, but has since turned what was once a hobby into a full-time occupation.

No longer working the cash register at Home Depot trying to juggle real life with MMA, the 38-year-old Dracut, Mass., native is now looking to make one last run to the top of his profession when he stars in the main event of “CES MMA XXVIII” Friday, March 13th, 2015 at Twin River Casino in Lincoln, R.I.

“I’ve accomplished more than I ever expected to,” Hawn said, “and more than most people expected me to.”

In just six years, Hawn has fought on 14 Bellator shows, earned two title shots and locked horns with elite fighters in his weight class countless times on national television. On March 13th, he returns to the national spotlight as the headliner on AXS TV, debuting with CES MMA, one of the fastest-rising promotions in mixed martial arts, in a three-round lightweight bout against Derek Loffer (9-2, 6 KOs) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

“Obviously, it’s nice to be on TV, but I don’t need it,” Hawn said. “I’m in the later stage of my career. Just being able to fight for the top organizations is what I care about, to be able to support myself and not have a full-time job like I used to.

“Whether I get exposure or not is not the main thing. I’m happy to have the opportunity.”

Hawn compiled a 10-4 record with Bellator until the promotion released him in November, a remarkable success rate considering the quality of opponents he faced through the years, including longtime Bellator vet Brent Weedman, Ron Keslar and “The Phenom” Douglas Lima of Brazil. His career soared to new heights four and a half years ago when he finally made enough money to support himself through fighting, allowing him to train more frequently.

“When you’re working 40 hours a week and you have to train before or after – or both – it catches up to you,” Hawn said. “When you’re young, it’s not a big deal. You hammer through that stuff. When you get older, it’s a lot to ask of your mind and body.”

The 27-year-old Loffer is also no stranger to the big stage. He fought under Bellator’s promotional guidance twice, most recently in March of 2014 when he beat Bobby Reardanz by unanimous decision, and has won four consecutive bouts since losing his Bellator debut in 2013.

Strangely enough, Loffer and Hawn appeared on that same aforementioned Bellator show in 2013, held in Loffer’s backyard in Cedar Rapids. Hawn beat Weedman in the main event while Loffer lost to Cliff Wright via armbar submission.

“It’s kind of ironic that Rick and I are meeting now outside of Bellator,” Loffer said. “I remember watching him that night and thinking, ‘I want to fight that guy!’ These are the kind of fights I want.”

Loffer will finally get his wish March 13th, but not after a long ordeal with Bellator in which he asked the promotion to grant him his release in September to explore other opportunities.

“Since then, a lot of doors have opened,” Loffer said. “It’s nice to essentially be able to do what you want with your career. That’s what ultimately led me to this fight.

“This promotion is solid. Being from Iowa and fighting in Rhode Island, you might not know much about them, but I was surprised when I looked into their background and their history. It was an opportunity I had to jump on. I’m a huge fan of CES MMA in terms of how they communicate and treat fighters.

“There are so many great fighters on this card who are solid. I’ll be watching like a fan, too, right before I fight. This is an organization that will only continue to get bigger and better and I’m excited to be a part of that history.”

Loffer admits he’s “been in talks” with other promotions about what his future holds and most of them agree if he beats Hawn, the sky’s the limit. Such pressure would derail most fighters, but Loffer has been down the road before.

With an 89 percent finish rate on his resume (six knockouts and two submissions in his nine professional victories) he’s confident he can successfully trade blows with a skilled striker such as Hawn.

“All together, I believe I’m the better striker,” Loffer said. “For the most part, he makes a good effort to keep it standing up. I’m just looking at it as another fight. I’m confident. I feel 100 percent ready. I’ve put in the work, I’ve got a good game plan. I don’t have too many worries.”

Neither does Hawn, who hasn’t burdened himself with the pressure of trying to impress the right people in order to leapfrog to a bigger stage. He’s adopted an “if it happens, it happens” mentality, already satisfied with how far he’s made it regardless of the outcome of his fight against Loffer.

“I like to look at everything one fight at a time and not get ahead of myself,” Hawn said. “Ultimately, yeah, it’d be great to be picked up by the [Ultimate Fighting Championships], but I’m not a young kid anymore. Maybe that’s not a realistic expectation. If I was 20-something, they’d have a bigger on me. I understand where I’m at with my ability, my age.

“This is a very unforgiving sport,” he continued. “It’s hard to last and be consistent at the top level. It’s just part of the process. You have to keep plugging away and try to get better everyday.”

Tickets for “CES MMA XXVIII” are priced at $40.00, $55.00, $100.00 and $125.00 and available for purchase online at www.cesmma.com or www.twinriver.com, by phone at 401-724-2253/2254 or at the Twin River Players Club. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

The main card of “CES MMA XXVIII” also features fan-favorite Luis Felix (12-8, 4 KOs) of Providence, R.I., who makes his third AXS TV appearance in the co-feature against Rich Patishnock (6-2, 1 KO) of East Stroudsburg, Pa.; and the television debut of bantamweight Andre Soukhamthath (8-2, 4 KOs) of Woonsocket, R.I. (Boca Raton, Fla.), who’ll face New York native and Bombsquad vet Brian Kelleher (11-7, 5 KOs).

Providence cruiserweight Greg Rebello (17-6, 9 KOs) returns in a three-round bout against seasoned vet Mike Mucitelli (7-1, 1 KO) of Syracuse while Pawtucket, R.I., middleweight Todd Chattelle (12-11, 9 KOs) returns to the CES MMA cage for a record 12th time looking to snap a two-fight losing streak when he faces the dangerous Roger Carroll (15-11), who has submitted 14 of his 15 victims.

Also on the televised card, Hollis, N.H., bantamweight Joey Gomez (5-0, 5 KOs) puts his unbeaten record on the line against poised veteran Kin Moy (6-1, 2 KOs) of Cambridge, Mass., the only fighter to beat fellow bantamweight Soukhamthath in the past four years.

The star-studded undercard features the return of rising stars Kyle Bochniak (4-0, 1 KO) and Lewis Corapi (6-1, 3 KOs). Bochniak, a Boston native, faces featherweight Dominic Warr (4-5, 1 KO) of Allston, Mass., while the Medford, Mass., vet Corapi battles Jay Bakanowski (2-1, 1 KO) of Northborough, Mass. Flyweight Chad Kelly (3-1, 1 KO) faces newcomer Jesse Gutierrez of Norwood, Mass.; Warwick, R.I., welterweight Tommy Venticinque (1-2) returns against Toby Oden (1-1) of Milford, Mass.; and Boston featherweight James Grant Murrin (2-0, 2 KOs) battles Brockton, Mass., vet Lionel Young (6-14). Female bantamweights Sarah Payant of West Springfield, Mass., and Janice Meyer of Cortland, N.Y., each make their professional debuts against one another in a three-round bout.

Training Camp Notes: Vasily Lepikhin

Oxnard, CA:
As Vasily “The Professor” Lepikhin (17-0, 9 KOs) prepares to face Isaac “Golden Boy” Chilemba (23-2-2, 10 KOs) for the NABF Light Heavyweight Title on March 14 in the opening bout of the Kovalev-Pascal HBO World Championship Boxing® telecast he cannot help to reflect on his career thus far.

The common misconception is that Lepikhin earned the nickname, “The Professor” while attending university in his hometown of Gelendzhik, Russia. Although he does have two degrees, one in sports (similar to a US degree in athletic training) and one in management, he was coined “The Professor” when he made his professional debut back in 2005 at the age of 19. He explained, “When I had my pro debut in Russia, the promoter of the show thought I was so smart in the ring he said I was a professor of boxing. From that point on I was known professionally as ‘The Professor.'”

The undefeated Lepikhin has had a stellar career so far. He has an impressive 53% (9 of 17) knockout-to win ratio with the majority of his fights taking place in his home country of Russia. He made his US debut back in August of 2014 with an impressive fifth round stoppage of Robert Berridge of New Zealand to secure the PABA and WBO Oriental Light Heavyweight Titles. Shortly after the fight Lepikhin and his promoter, German Titov of German Titov Promotions, signed a co-promotional agreement with Main Events.

In November, he returned to the US to face Brazilian Jackson Junior. Lepikhin appeared to struggle against Junior but still managed to secure the ten-round unanimous decision victory. He explained, “In my last fight I arrived to Pennsylvania and got very sick. I went into the ring sick.”

For this upcoming fight Lepikhin and his camp traveled from Russia to Oxnard, CA on February 21 to finish out the remainder of his training camp in the United States. “I came to Oxnard so I could adjust to the time difference and to get in a little sparring before heading to Canada,” said Vasily.

For Lepikhin, boxing is a family affair. He is trained by his father, Andrey Lepikhin, the same trainer that also trains fellow Main Events’ stable mate, middleweight Dmitry Mikhaylenko. His brother, Igor Lepikhin, will also work his corner for him on March 14 when he faces Chilemba in Canada. Vasily said, “I love training with my father. I love every single minute of it. It is great for me because I get to work with my family.”

Early in 2015 Lepikhin, Main Events and German Titov Promotions were approached about joining forces with Interbox to co-promote Lepikhin and add a fight between Vasily and Isaac Chilemba to the HBO World Championship Boxing® telecast. Lepikhin said, “I am very excited about fighting on HBO and this new opportunity with Interbox. I am looking forward to showcasing my skills on this large international scale.”

The fight with Chilemba, who is currently ranked #2 in the IBF, will be a ten-round fight for the NABF Light Heavyweight Title. When asked about the fight with Chilemba, Lepikhin said, “I think Chilemba is a very good, experienced fighter. It is going to be a very good bout.” His father/trainer added, “We travelled a long road to get to this point. We are very, very happy to finally be here. We are ready.”

UFC® AND FOX SPORTS ANNOUNCE ALL-NEW FORMAT FOR 10-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER®

ufc_title-belt_206
Las Vegas, Nev. – Coming off a historic season that saw the crowning of the UFC’s first-ever women’s strawweight champion, the next installment of The Ultimate Fighter® looks to raise the stakes once again. For the first time in the show’s 10-year history, a gym versus gym format will be introduced pitting fighters from the famed American Top Team against those from Blackzilians, all while living together under one roof in South Florida.

It will be a monumental season, as $500,000, the first-ever The Ultimate Fighter Team Trophy and most importantly, ultimate bragging rights, are all up for grabs. The decisions and strategy determined by each team have never impacted the show as much as they will this season.

This season of The Ultimate Fighter®: American Top Team vs. Blackzilians premieres with a two-hour episode Wednesday, April 22, at 10 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1 and will continue with 11 more one-hour shows Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET. This is the fifth season of The Ultimate Fighter to air on FOX Sports 1. The series is the network’s highest rated and most watched original program since the network’s inception in August 2013.

There’s no shortage of bad blood between these two camps. In 2001, the famed American Top Team gym was founded in Coconut Creek, Fla. by Dan Lambert. The gym has since been home to numerous champions and top contenders including current UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler, former title challengers Thiago Alves and Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva, former WEC® featherweight champ Mike Brown, Hector Lombard, Tyron Woodley and Dustin Poirier. However, in 2011 several members defected to start their own camp, the Blackzilians. Partnering with successful businessman Glenn Robinson, the fighters started their own training facility only 20 minutes away in Boca Raton, Fla., beginning one of the deepest rivalries in all of MMA. The Blackzilians camp is now home to former UFC light heavyweight champions Rashad Evans and Vitor Belfort, as well as top contenders Anthony Johnson, Eddie Alvarez, Michael Johnson and Matt Mitrione.

This season features eight rising welterweights from each team who will be selected by their respective gym owner to live in a South Florida house alongside their competition. The fighters will continue to train at their home gym with their own coaches and sparring partners. However, fights will no longer be held at a neutral site and now move to the teams’ respective gyms, always leaving one fighter to compete in enemy territory. Adding to the anticipation ahead of each bout, opponents won’t be known until the weigh-in. The culmination of the season will see two fighters meet at The Ultimate Fighter Finale in summer 2015, where the winning gym will be crowned.

This season’s cast includes:

AMERICAN TOP TEAM BLACKZILIANS
Marcelo Alfaya (16-7, 1NC) Porto Alegre, Brazil Valdir Araujo (14-5), Gama, Federal District, Brazil
Steve Carl (21-4), Belle Plain, Iowa Carrington Banks (3-0), Peoria, Ill.
Nathan Coy (14-5), Vallejo, Calif. Luiz Buscape (16-5), Joao Pessoa, Paraiba, Brazil
Michael Graves (4-0), Toledo, Ohio Jason Jackson (4-2), Kingston, Jamaica
Hayder Hassan (6-1), Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Vicente Luque (7-4-1), Westwood, N.J.
Sabah Homasi (8-4), New Brunswick, N.J. Andrews Nakahara (4-2-2), Mogi das Cruzes, Sao Paulo, Brazil
Uros Jurisic (5-0), Ljubljana, Slovenia Felipe Portela (8-2), Brasilia, Brazil
Steve Montgomery (8-2), Florence, S.C. Kamarudeen Usman (5-1) Auchi, Nigeria

Many of today’s most recognizable names in the UFC have emerged from The Ultimate Fighter® series, which also produced champions such as Forrest Griffin, Rashad Evans, TJ Dillashaw, Carla Esparza and Matt Serra, as well as season winners Michael Bisping, Ryan Bader and John Dodson.

ALL ACTION EXPECTED IN CANCUN DOUBLEHEADER WHEN IVAN CANO TAKES ON JOHN CARLO APARICIO AND EDGAR JIMENEZ FIGHTS HUMBERTO MORALES ON FOX DEPORTES

LOS ANGELES (Feb. 28) – Two Mexican clashes are expected to produce plenty of action today, Saturday, Feb. 28 at the Oasis Arena in Cancun, as FOX Deportes airs a pair of hard-hitting matchups featuring two of Mexico City’s best, Ivan “Macanon” Cano and Edgar “Andres” Jimenez.

In the main event, Cano battles Zacatecas’ Jhon Carlo “Sireno” Aparicio in a 10-round lightweight clash, and in the co-featured bout, Jimenez takes on Veracruz’ Humberto “Chato” Morales in a 10-round fight for the FECARBOX Bantamweight Title.

Fresh from back-to-back 12-round draws against Javier Prieto in WBC Silver Lightweight Title bouts, Ivan “Macanon” Cano (22-6-2, 15 KOs) will seek a return to the win column in his first fight of 2015 this Saturday. A former WBC Youth champion, Cano is unbeaten in six of his last eight bouts and with a victory over Aparicio, he will kick off his campaign for a shot at the 135-pound title.

Winner of four of his last six bouts, hard-hitting Jhon Carlo “Sireno” Aparicio (27-8, 21 KOs) has similar title aspirations and while he has already held the WBC Mundo Hispano and WBC FECOMBOX belts, he wants a world title. A win over Cano on Feb. 28 will set him in the right direction.

A 22-year-old bantamweight banger, Edgar “Andres” Jimenez (19-11-1, 14 KOs) has become popular with fans for his aggressive style in the ring. The current WBC FECARBOX Champion has been showing some of his best form as of late, with wins in four of his last five bouts, including three knockouts.

One of boxing’s most compelling comeback stories, Humberto “Chato” Morales (12-11-3, 8 KOs, 1 NC) had an 8-11-2 record as 2013 closed, but in 2014 he roared back ending with a record of 4-0-1 with 1 NC in six bouts. Coming off an eight-round win over Cesar Gandara last November, Morales is hoping for another spectacular year in 2015 beginning with Saturday’s bout against Jimenez.

Cano vs. Aparicio, is a 10-round lightweight bout presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Cancun Boxing de Pepe Gomez. The FOX Deportes broadcast begins at 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT.

LIAM MCGEARY BECOMES MMA’S FIRST-EVER BRITISH WORLD CHAMPION AT “BELLATOR: THE BRITISH INVASION”

Englishman Liam McGeary (10-0) kept his professional record unblemished, capping off a successful “British Invasion” and claiming the Bellator MMA Light Heavyweight title with a five-round decision win over former champion Emanuel Newton (25-8-1).

The contest served as the headlining bout of Friday’s “Bellator MMA: British Invasion” event at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

McGeary attacked from the start, as he used his lanky frame and incredible grappling to move from submission attempt to submission attempt in entertaining fashion. From triangle choke to kimura to armbar, McGeary was constantly on the move, but Newton showed capable defense and pulled free from each hold.

Despite the obvious danger on the ground, Newton continued to take the fight to the floor in the second round, working from his opponent’s extremely active guard. Once again, McGeary’s submission attempts were relentless, but Newton pulled free from each hold.

The remainder of the fight played out in similar fashion, with Newton able to take the fight to the floor with ease but forced to defend constant grappling attacks from McGeary. Both fighters could make arguments for the win, with Newton enjoying extended stretches in the dominant position. However, McGeary’s constant offense set the tone for the action. In the end, judges sided with McGeary, awarding him the win with scores of 48-46, 48-47 and 48-47.

McGeary remains perfect through the first 10 fights of his career.

Meanwhile, Newton sees a seven-fight winning streak come to an end.

“It was a close fight,” Newton said. “I was on the ground. I didn’t stop hitting and moving with triangle hits. That guy is so slippery and tough.”

In the night’s co-feature, light heavyweight contender Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal (15-4) moved up to the heavyweight division and earned an impressive decision win over Cheick Kongo (22-10-2).

Facing a massive size differential, Lawal turned to his wrestling base rather than try and trade with the bigger man. The plan worked, as Lawal controlled the action in the clinch and racked up points with takedowns. While the crowd tried to entice Lawal to take a more risky approach, “King Mo” remained disciplined in his approach and cruised to what looked like a clear-cut decision win, though he had to settle for a split result, 30-27, 28-29 and 29-28.

“I don’t agree with the split decision at all,” Lawal said after the fight. “I won all three rounds. He knows he lost that fight. I got the victory and that’s all that matters. Wrestling works and it showed in this fight.

“I have a great coaching staff at American Top Team. I could’ve gone another two rounds. At the end of the third round, I knew he was gassed, so I just walked him off. I hope to get the chance to fight for a title next.”

In welterweight action, Brazilian veteran Andre “Chatuba” Santos (37-10) proved himself a game opponent against Paul “Semtex” Daley (36-13-2), but the British slugger ultimately cruised to a decision win.

In typical Daley fashion, he fired heavy punches on the feet, looking for the knockout. However, Santos proved resilient, answering with strikes of his own while also looking to work from the clinch. The action went back and forth for the opening two rounds before Daley took over in the third.

An early Daley knockdown set the tone for the final frame, and Daley worked hard for the finish. Santos, however, simply wouldn’t quit, and despite being dominated in the final round, he did survive until the final bell, where Daley was awarded a decision win.

“It feels good to be back in MMA; I was a little rusty,” Daley, who had been focusing on his kickboxing career, admitted after the win. “This guy was so tough. I caught him with heavy, wild shots, and normally I would’ve taken my opponent out in the second or third round, but he didn’t quit; he has a ton of heart. It was a great fight.”

Fighting for the first time since a failed bid for the Bellator MMA Light Heavyweight World Title, Linton “The Swarm” Vassell (15-4) scored a second-round TKO over Rameau “The African Assassin” Sokoudjou (16-13).

Vassell controlled the action from the start, taking Sokoudjou to the floor and scoring with ground-and-pound blows while hunting out opportunities to end the fight with a submission. That opening would come in the second round.

Again working hard to take the fight to the floor, Vassell refused to give Sokoudjou any room to work, scoring top position and utilizing superior grappling skills. Sokoudjou was unable to get back to his feet, and Vassell eventually unleashed a flurry of strikes that earned the stoppage at the 3:18 mark of the second.

“I wanted to finish him in the first round,” Vassell said after the win. “He held my arms and stopped me from taking him down.

“It feels great representing my country and to come here and fight in front of all the American fans is a great honor.”

In the night’s first main-card contest, welterweight Brennan “The Irish Bad Boy” Ward (10-3) made quick work of “Courteous” Curtis Millender (7-1), needing just 64 seconds to score a submission win.

The two went toe-to-toe on the feet to open, and it appeared Millender was getting the best of the initial exchanges. But after coming up short on a takedown, Ward scored a crisp two-punch combination that sent his opponent to the floor. Ward took advantage of the opening, hopping on his opponent’s back and sinking in a rear-naked choke, ending the fight at the 1:37 mark of the first round.

“You know me, man,” Ward said after the quick win. “I come straight at guys like always.”

In bouts shown on Spike TV, around the world on Spike.com, hometown fighters did not disappoint here at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT as Blair Tugman (North Haven), Matt Bessette (Hartford) and Dean Hancock (Danbury) all won their bouts in impressive fashion.

Tugman (7-5) started off the night with a dominating performance over Marvin Maldonado (2-4) of Latham, N.Y, scored 30-26, 30-27 twice, all in favor of Tugman.

“Felt great to get another win in Bellator against a tough opponent in Marvin,” said Tugman. “I was excited to fight in front of my home crowd. I have a great coach (Andrew Calandrelli) and training partners at Ultimate MMA Training Center in North Haven, CT. And was confident that if I implemented my game plan I would come out with the victory. I’m upset I didn’t finish Marvin but he’s a tough guy to finish. I hope my dominant performance shows Bellator I am ready for bigger fights.

Bessette (14-6), who was able to break free of Josh Laberge’s (9-5) attack by striking him with power punches and stuns to the jaw. “Everything went right tonight, I won,” said an ecstatic Bessette.” I was able to throw my power shots and did to him what he does to other people.

“I got the win, which is the most important thing. Josh [Laberge] gave me an awesome fight and I couldn’t be happier.”

In a swing bout, Hancock looked poised in his professional debut against Mike Mangan (0-3), despite early jitters. “It felt great coming out of the cage, the first few seconds were like a blur to me,” said Hancock. “Once I got my bearings I was able to go to work and do what I do best. It was a huge moment for me.

“I feel like I belong in Bellator, it was great to get my first professional win. I need to just keep moving forward.”

Also on tonight’s preliminary card

New York transplant Neiman Gracie did what Gracie’s do best: win via rear naked choke at 2:36 of round 1 over Massachusetts’s Bobby Flynn (4-3). With the win, Gracie keeps his unbeaten streak intact at 3-0.

Also from New York, Binghamton’s Tamdan McCrory (13-3) scored an armbar victory over Jason Butcher (8-2) at 1:06 of the first frame.

Thompson beats Solis – again!

Heavyweight veteran Tony “Tiger” Thompson kept his word by beating former Cuban amateur standout Odlanier Solis for the second time in their rematch Friday night in Antalya (Turkey). One year after winning a close split decision against “La Sombra” the 43-year-old two time world title challenger outworked Solis with his jab and forced the 2004 Olympic gold medalist to quit in the ninth round.

Promoter Ahmet Oner who also worked in Solis corner was bitterly disappointed with the Cuban’s performance. “I have wasted a lot of time, nerves and money on Solis. He has all the talent in the world but he just blew it”, says Oner. “I cannot believe how bad he looked today. He is a shame for Cuban boxing. The guy is done. And I’m done with him. He’s still under contract with me but today he made the step from contender to journey man. I will throw him to the wolves and feed every young and hungry prospect with him who is ready to pay some money.”
While he was furious at Solis, Oner congratulated Thompson to his win. “Tony looked good and got the job done”, adds Oner. “I have options on him and I am sure that I will be able to land some more big fights for him. He will jump up in the ratings. There are some guys up there constantly looking for trouble. I think Tony still is a serious thread to numerous contenders. I don’t know what Manuel Charr has lined up but he keeps on calling out everybody. That might be an interesting option. We’ll see what’s next.”
Thompson himself was obviously very happy with his performance. “I knew I could do, I knew I would do it, I told everybody – and I delivered”, states the “Tiger”. “I thank Ahmet for the opportunity and I thank my team and the people who believed in me for their support. I’m looking forward to whatever comes along. I’m still here. And I’m still ready for greatness.”

In the co-feature promising Turkish prospect Avni Yildirim scored an impressive third round TKO against George Beroshvili from Georgia to claim the vacant WBC Youth Intercontinental Light Heavyweight Championship. “Avni could be the next big thing, he reminds me of a young Gennady Golovkin”, says Oner. “Of course, he still has a long way to go but the way he took care of business against a good and experienced opponent in his third pro fight was more than impressive. I am looking forward to seeing more from him.”

In the third title fight of the night Aziz Karaoglu defended his WBC Mediterranean cruiserweight title against Maurizio Lovaglio from Italy. After ten action packed and hard fought rounds in which both guys recovered from knockdowns, Karaoglu got the unanimous decision win (97-91, 95-93, 95-92).

ADONIS STEVENSON VS. SAKIO BIKA TO TAKE PLACE SATURDAY, APRIL 4 IN FIRST PREMIER BOXING CHAMPIONS ON CBS EVENT LIVE FROM THE PEPSI COLISEUM IN QUEBEC CITY

Adonis Stevenson
MONTREAL (Feb. 27, 2015) – Light heavyweight world champion Adonis “Superman” Stevenson (25-1, 21 KOs) returns to the ring Saturday, April 4 at Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec City to defend his title against former super middleweight world champion Sakio “The Scorpion” Bika (32-6-3, 21 KOs). The April 4 event marks the debut of Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on CBS (3 p.m. ET/12 p.m. PT).

“I am excited to be the headliner for first PBC event on CBS,” Stevenson said. “I know Bika will stop at nothing, so the fight will be spectacular and extremely offensive-minded. I predict that Bika will lose by knockout for the first time in his career.”

“After all these years fighting at 168 pounds, it was becoming increasingly difficult to make weight and that was a major factor in my defeats,” Bika said. “I see no problem making the jump to light heavyweight to face Stevenson and I do not feel I’ll be at a disadvantage because the champion made this transition successfully himself less than two years ago against Chad Dawson. I promise you that I will be the new champion on April 4.”

Stevenson, 37, won the world light heavyweight title in June of 2013 in Montreal, via a sensational 76-second, first-round knockout just over the then-undisputed king of the division, Dawson. The impressive victory earned Stevenson “Knockout of the Year” and “Fighter of the Year” accolades. In his first defense the following Sept. 28, former world champion Tavoris “Thunder” Cloud was meant to be a major test for the new champion, but the powerful southpaw forced Cloud to retire at the end of the seventh round.

Two months later, “Superman” concluded the year with an unequivocal victory over his No. 1 mandatory contender, Tony “Bomber” Bellew of Great Britain, who was unable to complete the sixth round. In May 2015 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Polish challenger Andrzei Fonfara proved to be a tough challenger and fans were treated to a memorable bout as Stevenson knocked Fonfara down twice in the early rounds only to visit the canvas himself in the ninth round. Judges scored the fight 116-109, 115-110 and 115-110 for Stevenson in his SHOWTIME® debut. In his last outing, Dec. 19, 2014 on SHOWTIME from the Pepsi Coliseum, “Superman” made short work of Russian veteran Dmitry “The Hunter” Sukhotskiy, stopping him in the fifth.

Bika, fighting out of Australia by way of his native Cameroon, which he represented at the 2000 Olympics, has earned the reputation as a tough, rough brawling warrior who has fought the best. He has been in six world title fights (1-3-2), holding one of the 168-pound division crowns in 2013-14. He has fought many world champions, never been knocked out in 41 professional bouts and he was “The Contender, Season 3” reality television series champion in 2007.

“The Scorpion” demonstrated his world-class toughness and determination in fights with the world’s elite super middleweights at that time, challenging world champions Markus Beyer and Joe Calzaghe in 2006, Lucian Bute in 2007 and Andre Ward in 2010. Resilience and hard work finally paid off for Bika when he won the coveted 168-pound title, defeating Marco Antonio Periban by decision in 2013 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. He successfully defended his title six months later by fighting to a 12-round draw with Anthony Dirrell on SHOWTIME in 2013. Bika eventually lost his belt in a rematch with Dirrell on SHOWTIME last August.

PBC on CBS, headlined by the light heavyweight world championship fight between Stevenson and Bika, is promoted by Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM) and presented by Videotron and in association with Mise-O-Jeu.

Tickets go on sale Saturday, Feb. 28 at 10 a.m. E, at the Pepsi Coliseum box office in Quebec, by calling (418) 691-7211 or (800) 900-7469, online at www.billetech.com, at GYM (514) 383-0666 and Champion Boxing Club (514) 376-0980. Ticket prices range from $25 to $250 on the floor.

Because the show is being held the day before Easter, GYM encourages the Quebec public to come as families and groups by offering two tickets (in the stands) for-the-price-of-1 special offer for two days only (Saturday, Feb. 28 and Sunday, March 1) for those purchasing tickets directly through www.billetech.com.

Frampton sees big fights in future but first must win against Avalos this Saturday on AWE

carl-frampton-celebrates-his-win
San Diego, CA – February 27, 2014- This Saturday afternoon, February 28, Carl Frampton (19-0, 13 KO’s) will make the 1st defense of the IBF Super Bantamweight title when he takes on mandatory challenger Chris Avalos (25-2, 19 KO’s) in a bout that can be seen live and exclusively in the United States on AWE–A Wealth of Entertainment.

The show begins on AWE at 3:00 PM ET / 12:00 PT

The card will originate from the Odyssey Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland and is promoted by Cyclone Promotions

Frampton will be fighting in front of his hometown fans knows that he needs a big effort over the tough Avalos in order to secure major fights in the suddenly hot 122-pound division.

“Everything is good. My weight is good. I have had great sparring, a great camp and I am ready to go. The atmosphere at the Odyssey Arena is always unbelievable and it will be even more on Saturday,” said Frampton.

The undefeated Frampton did not need theatrics by Avalos’ camp at Thursday’s press conference to get him mentally ready for Saturday’s showdown.

“I am always motivated and they did not have to do that to get me in the zone. I just shrugged it off and I am completely chill.”

Frampton has long been rumored to have an all United Kingdom showdown with Scott Quigg, but he knows that he has a huge task in front of him on Saturday.

“I actually think Avalos is better than Quigg. He is dangerous, a better puncher, a better chin and he hits harder. I know I have to win as there are big fights in my future.”

Frampton also agrees to the theory that once a fighter wins a title he becomes a better fighter.

“Since I won the title, I am walking taller. I have been running through sparring partners and I can see that I am a more complete fighter. If Chris doesn’t believe that, we will see what happens.”

“I want to be exciting and I want the knockout. I want to fight the big fights. I want to fight everyone at Super Bantamweight. I can see myself fighting Quigg this summer then I want to fight Rigondeaux. I see him as the man to beat at this weight class. Another guy is Leo Santa Cruz but I do not think he will fight anybody of note.”

HEAVYWEIGHT TYSON FURY AND SLICK YOUNG STAR CHRIS EUBANK JR LEAD BUMPER WEEKEND OF BACK-TO-BACK ACTION ON BOXNATION

Tyson Fury
LONDON (27 Feb) – Heavyweight star Tyson Fury will be out to impress when he takes on the unrelenting Christian Hammer.

The 26-year-old Manchester banger knows that everything is on the line when he faces the German based Romanian, with a shot at Wladimir Klitschko’s WBO belt next up if he comes through the fight unscathed, live and exclusive on BoxNation.

However, in the big-hitting Hammer, who has a record of 17 wins from his 20 fights, he faces a man who has vowed to tear up the script and steal the show at the O2 Arena on Saturday night.

“Tyson Fury will not go the distance against me, he will be getting knocked out clean and left to pick up the pieces after the fight. He cannot hurt me with his punches because I’m in the best shape of my career for this fight. He will not last against me,” said Hammer.

“He has been put down before, he can be hit and hurt. He has plenty of heart, but once I put him down he will stay down.

“I’ve taken this fight because I know I can get the Klitschko world title fight when I beat Fury. Klitschko is talking about fighting Fury, but he will be talking about my name once I knock out Fury,” Hammer said.

Yet, the British, European and WBO International champion Fury is spurred on by the fear of losing.

Fury, who has won all 23 professional fights, said, “once you get done over there is no point in carrying on, is there?

“Boxers bounce back after a defeat, but are they the same? Are they really that good?

“When you think you’re unbeatable like I do now and get splattered all over the ring, you are not the man you were. You’re a beaten shell of yourself.

“If you get flattened you’re not as good as you thought you were, but if you lose a disputed decision or something goes wrong and you get disqualified, there isn’t much you can do about that.

“I am not in that position to know whether I would walk away if I got knocked out, but I would think about it.

“It isn’t just me I have to think about. I have got a wife and kids. Do I really need to be taking punishment where I could end up in a wheelchair?

“All the money and titles wouldn’t mean anything because I am sat there drooling from the mouth.”

Chris Eubank Jr will also feature on this Saturday night’s card when he challenges interim WBA middleweight champion Dmitry Chudinov.

The Brighton boxer is looking to bounce back in style following his split decision loss to rival Billy Joe Saunders last November, and is well aware that he splits opinion amongst fight fans.

“In this game you want to be loved, hated or both. You don’t want to be in the middle. Everything I have done, the way I fight, puts me at either end of the spectrum. I am a Marmite type fighter, you either love me or hate me,” said Eubank Jr.

“Even people who don’t like me are still going to come and pay to watch me fight and see me lose. Either way, they are still there watching, but I want to have a worldwide fan base and I believe I can do it,” he said.

BoxNation’s bumper weekend of action gets off to a cracking start tonight with the thrilling Golden Boy Promotions show set to feature 7ft heavyweight Taishan Dong.

The imposing 26-year-old hails from China and will be looking to continue his winning ways, in a fledgling career which has seen him win his first two contests by knockout, when he takes on American Roy McCrary.

The top of the bill at Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California, will see the ever-exciting Pablo Cesar Cano taking on the hard-hitting Dominican Juan Carlos Abreu, who has scored 17 knockouts from 18 wins, in a ten-round welterweight contest.

Fury v Hammer is live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky 437/490HD, Virgin 546 and TalkTalk 525) this Saturday at 7pm. Visit boxnation.com to subscribe.
