Los Anegeles’ own DJ Ray of Big Boy’s Neighborhood will spin music during the fights and fans will be able to dance and mingle with the fighters when the venue converts into a night club, in a VIP experience not matched by any promoter in the industry.

The original Fight Night Club was Golden Boy Promotions’ critically acclaimed live boxing series hosted at Club Nokia in downtown Los Angeles. The series produced present-day boxing stars including Abner Mares, “Vicious” Victor Ortiz, Ronny Rios, Carlos Molina, Manuel “Tino” Avila, Fidel “The Atrisco Kid” Maldonado Jr., Jessie Vargas, Luis Ramos Jr. and many others who went on to become world champions, and some of whom are still in the running for title matches. The return of the rebooted live show will again be a platform for young talent to display their skills, entertain local family and friends, be showcased on national television and make steps towards their dreams of becoming world champions.

TICKETS FOR WSOF 19: GAETHJE VS. PALOMINO GO ON SALE TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 10

LAS VEGAS (February 6, 2015) – The highly-anticipated, live NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) televised WSOF 19: Gaethje vs. Palomino world championship Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) event headlined by a lightweight (155 pounds) title fight and featuring the first stage of a star-studded, four-man light heavyweight (205 pounds) tournament will head to the Comerica Theatre in Phoenix, Ariz. on Saturday, March 28.

Priced from $39.99, tickets for the event go on sale on Tuesday, February 10 at 10 a.m. MST at Ticketmaster.com and WSOF.com.

WSOF President, six-time world champion and two-time Hall of Famer Ray Sefo will reveal the previously unannounced fourth tournament entrant as well as news concerning future WSOF events during the live NBC Sports Network telecast of WSOF 18: Moraes vs. Hill on Thursday, February 12.

In the headlining contest, reigning, undefeated lightweight kingpin and wrecking machine Justin Gaethje (13-0), who has been referred to as “the greatest lightweight on this planet,” will risk his belt and his flawless record against dangerous, hard-hitting KO artist Luis “Baboon” Palomino (23-9).

The event also marks the beginning of a multi-event, four-man elimination tournament that will crown its winner the promotion’s inaugural light heavyweight champion later this year. Superstars Ronny Markes (15-3) and Thiago Silva (16-3) will square off in the first bout of the tournament’s first stage.

The second bout in the first stage of the WSOF tournament, pitting wrestling standout and inspiration Matt “The Hammer” Hamill (11-5) against the soon to be announced fourth tournament entrant, will take place at a later date.

The winners of the two, initial stage tournament bouts will square off against each other with the vacant WSOF world title at stake.

The 26-year-old Gaethje of Safford, Ariz. has been on a perfect run since his 2011 professional debut. He made his WSOF debut in March 2013, scoring a first round (2:27) TKO (doctor stoppage) on Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante, before moving on to defeat Brian Cobb, Dan Lauzon and Richard Patishnock.

On July 5, 2014 Gaethje finished Nick Newell by way of TKO (punches) in the second round (3:09) of the first-ever WSOF world lightweight championship bout, live on NBC. Gaethje defended his strap for the first time on Nov. 15, 2014, earning a split decision win over Melvin Guillard.

In his 13 career wins, Gaethje has secured 11 stoppage wins, including 10 victories by KO.

Fighting out of Miami, Fla., the 34-year-old Palomino, a native of Peru, has 13 KO’s and 2 submission victories under his belt.

Palomino has been explosive in the WSOF decagon cage, thus far, picking up back-to-back KO wins over fellow battle-tested veteran Jorge “Macaco” Patino and the previously undefeated “Lethal” Lewis Gonzalez, by way of an onslaught of punches and a knee strike-punch combination, respectively to earn a shot at Gaethje’s title.

Hamill of Loveland, Ohio remains one of the most inspirational athletes in all of MMA, even as he nears 10 years in the sport. Deaf since birth, Hamill managed to earn his way to three NCAA Division III wrestling national titles before turning his attention to MMA.

The subject of a 2010 biographical film entitled “The Hammer,” Hamill, who announced his retirement from the sport less than two years ago, owns notable wins over Tito Ortiz, Tim Boetsch, Keith Jardine and Mark Munoz, among others, and also boasts past clashes with Michael Bisping, Rich Franklin, Alexander Gustafsson, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Jon Jones.

Markes of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, is a member of his native country’s famed Nova Uniao team. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, the 26-year-old turned pro in 2007 and opened his career at 12-1 before moving down to middleweight (185 pounds), where he found mixed results at 2-2 in a four-fight run.

Markes returned to light heavyweight in his WSOF debut, scoring a dominating decision win over Cully Butterfield this past August. In his career, Markes is 13-1 when competing at 205 pounds.

Silva, originally from Sao Carlos, Sao Paulo, Brazil, now fighting out of Oakland Park, Fla., has been fighting professionally for nearly a decade. The 32-year-old Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt opened his career with 13 consecutive victories, a run that included nine first-round stoppages.

Silva’s appearance will mark his first start since earning a unanimous decision over Hamill on Oct. 9, 2013. One bout prior to that on June 8, 2013, Silva scored a brutal first round (4:29) KO (punches) on Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante.

Additional bouts for WSOF 19: Gaethje vs. Palomino will be announced soon.

The live NBCSN telecast of WSOF 19: Gaethje vs. Palomino will begin at 9 p.m. EST/6 p.m. PST.

Doors at Comerica Theatre will open for the event at 3 p.m. MST, and the first preliminary bout will begin at 4 p.m.

CLETUS SELDIN-JOHNNY GARCIA HEADLINE ROCKIN FIGHTS 17 LIVE ON ESPN’S FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS

Star Boxing’s Undefeated Jr. Welterweight Cletus “The Hebrew Hammer” Seldin faces Mexican warrior Johnny Garcia, in the main event from The Paramount in Huntington, NY, February 27th live on ESPN’s Friday Night fights. The fight will be a 10 round bout for Seldin’s WBC International Jr. Welterweight title.

This will mark the first time Seldin (15-0 12KO’s, Shirley, NY) will be featured as the main event attraction on ESPN and the popular power punching Long Islander has no easy task in front of him as he battles the ever so tough Johnny Garcia (19-2-1 11KO’s, Holland MI). The thrilling and charismatic Seldin is one of the hardest punchers in the division.

The two fighters have similar styles, both are very aggressive and both carry ‘one-punch’ knockout power. Seldin captured the title in his last bout at The Paramount on December 14th, a stirring 9th round TKO over Bayan Jargal in a fight that kept the fans on their feet throughout the whole bout. These types of fights have become a staple for Seldin making him a must see fighter on the rise.

Garcia is no stranger to these kinds of fights either. For example, in one of his best wins (2012) he outslugged the undefeated Cuban prospect Yordenis Ugas in a thrilling 8 round war. Garcia has promised to come into Seldin’s backyard and upset the apple cart by walking out with Seldin’s WBC International title.

Joe DeGuardia (President/CEO of Star Boxing) had this to say about this upcoming bout, “As a fan I can’t wait to see these two warriors trade bombs on February 27th. I know for the fans in attendance and those viewing on the ESPN network this could be an early candidate for Fight of the Year. You have 2 young, hungry fighters, both like to brawl, both good punchers, both crowd pleasing fighters which should make for another exciting sold out night at The Paramount”.

The undercard bouts will be announced soon. For ticket information you can call Star Boxing, 718 823-2000 or The Paramount box office, 631 673-7300, or Ticketmaster at Ticketmaster.com or by calling 1 (800) 745-3000. Tickets are selling very fast so get your orders in early.

Macklin’s rooting for Murray but picking Golovkin ahead of February 21 title clash

Matthew Macklin
LONDON (6 FEB) Former world middleweight title challenger Matthew Macklin believes old adversary Gennady Golovkin will successfully defend his WBA Super world middleweight title against Martin Murray on February 21, LIVE on Channel 5, but is hoping the British challenger can pull off an almighty upset against all odds.

Thirty-two-year-old Macklin challenged Golovkin in June 2013 and came up short, losing via stoppage in round three. Since then he has watched the man known as ‘GGG’ go from strength to strength, defending his belt a further four times, and now awaits the challenge of Murray in Monte Carlo.

“I think Martin’s a solid all-rounder with a good defence,” said Macklin. “He’s not a massive puncher, but he looks physically strong, and he’s technically sound and very well-schooled. He doesn’t telegraph his shots. He’s tough and seems to have a decent chin.

“Murray has never really been bashed up before, either. He drew with (Felix) Sturm and he lost a close one with (Sergio) Martinez. Both fights were very competitive and Murray didn’t take a lot. He knows how to look after himself at the top level.

“Still, I don’t think Murray can beat Golovkin and I don’t want to romanticise his chances; I’d be surprised if he lasted the distance. But, having said that, Martin has a very tight defence and is a solid enough fighter. If anybody can go rounds with Golovkin, you’d think it would be someone like Murray.”

Of course, going rounds with a fearsome puncher like Golovkin is easier said than done. Macklin has firsthand experience of this. So do 30 other beaten opponents.

“Golovkin is so aggressive and has so much variety,” explained Macklin. “He also hits very hard. He can open up even the tightest of defences.

“In boxing, it’s easy to be relaxed when someone can’t hurt you. But, when they can, it’s a different story. You burn up a lot more nervous energy and you’re panicked into making mistakes. It’s a different ball game with Golovkin.

“Ultimately, I think Golovkin’s composure will shock Murray. That’s what shocked me. He’s very relaxed, with brilliant footwork, and he’s always balanced to throw punches. He judges distance extremely well and can cut off the ring better than anybody.

“It’s not even so much about the power. Obviously, he caught me with a corker of a shot and badly hurt my ribs, but, up to that point, I felt his power was solid but not enough to shake me up. It was more about his all-round ability, his composure and his confidence. Nothing fazes him and he’s able to exert a lot of pressure very quickly.

“I guess a lot will depend on Martin’s ambition. He’ll go into the ring looking to win, but that can quickly change once Golovkin goes to work. You see some guys just looking to survive after a certain point. If you try to win from round one to twelve, it’s unlikely you’ll last the distance with someone like Golovkin.”

No man has lasted the distance with Golovkin since 2008.

Though a fan of the Kazakh destroyer, Macklin hopes countryman Murray can go one better and hand ‘GGG’ his first career defeat.

“I’m a big fan of Golovkin and was a big fan before I fought him,” Macklin admitted. “He’s a fantastic fighter and a lovely guy. I’ll be following his career and supporting him in the future.

“But it would be great for Martin Murray and for British boxing if we could get that world title over here. I think Martin will give a great account of himself. I just don’t think he has enough to beat Golovkin. Then again, this is boxing and big upsets happen. Who would’ve thought ‘Buster’ Douglas could beat Mike Tyson in 1990?”

Former Junior Middleweight Titlist Sergio Mora to Meet Abie Han on ESPN Friday Night Fights and Noche de Combates

sergio_mora_image
The February 6 edition of ESPN Friday Night Fights presented by Corona Extra and ESPN Deportes’ Noche de Combates presentado por Corona Extra will feature former junior middleweight titleholder Sergio “The Latin Snake” Mora (27-3-2, 9 KOs) and veteran Abie “The Sun City Warrior” Han (23-1, 14 KOs) in the 12-round middleweight main event. Friday’s show from Beau Rivage Resort & Casino in Biloxi, Miss., will air live at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN2, broadband Spanish-language ESPN Deportes+ and WatchESPN. ESPN Deportes will televise Friday’s fights on Saturday, Feb. 7, at 4 p.m. The card is presented by DiBella Entertainment.

Commentators:
Joe Tessitore will be ringside with analyst Teddy Atlas describing the action for ESPN2, while studio host Todd Grisham (@GrishamESPN) will provide the latest boxing news and information. Alex Pombo and Delvin Rodríguez will call the fights for Noche de Combates (Fight Night) on both ESPN Deportes and ESPN Deportes+, while Leopoldo González and Claudia Trejos will anchor the studio.

Main Event:
Los Angeles’ Mora—who won the first season of the reality series The Contender in 2004-05 before winning the WBC junior middleweight title in 2008—is coming off an eight-round unanimous decision win over Dashon Johnson.

“My trainer took a look at Han. He reminds us a lot of an opponent we fought before named Archak TerMeliksetian,” Mora said. “He’s tall, but he doesn’t fight tall. He fights compact and throws very strong, compact punches. He’s got a great record, so we can’t take him for granted.”

Han, of Texas, has won four fights in a row, including his last, a 10 round majority decision win over Marco Reyes.

“It’s an honor to fight someone of Mora’s caliber,” Han said. “He is a former world champion. He’s very smart and he’s a veteran of the game of boxing. I’m looking forward to the challenge. I feel, come the 6th, I will have to be on my A-game. I feel like if I am on my A-game, I can pull off the upset.”

Co-Feature:
Friday’s eight-round co-feature will pit undefeated junior middleweight Erickson “Hammer” Lubin (8-0, 6 KOs) against a yet-to-be-determined opponent after Lubin’s original opponent dropped out due to a failed medical test. In his last bout, Florida’s Lubin scored an eight-round unanimous decision win over veteran Norberto Gonzalez.

Next week on Friday Night Fights and Noche de Combates:
Boxcino 2015, a single-elimination, two-weight class tournament featuring eight fighters in both the junior middleweight and heavyweight divisions, will begin on Friday, Feb. 13 with the junior middleweight quarterfinal round. SANTA MONICA, Calif. (February 4, 2015) – Bellator MMA Light Heavyweight Champion
Emanuel “The Hardcore Kid” Newton (25-7) puts his title on the line against undefeated Englishman Liam McGeary (9-0) in the main event of “Bellator MMA: British Invasion” on Feb. 27, and with a five-fight Spike TV-televised main card already in place, the night’s six-fight Spike.com-streamed preliminary card is now set, as well.

The official additions to the preliminary card include heavyweights Raphael “The Silencer” Butler (8-1-1) vs. Josh “The Freight Train” Diekmann (15-5), welterweights Jesse Juarez (22-9) vs. Brennan “The Irish Bad Boy” Ward (9-3) and middleweights Jason Butcher (8-1) vs. Tamdan “The Barn Cat” McCrory (12-3), welterweights Bobby Flynn (4-2) vs. Neiman Gracie (2-0), bantamweights Marvin “The Bulldog” Maldonado (2-3) vs. Blair Tugman (6-5) and bantamweights Randy Costa (0-0) vs. Carlos Hernandez (1-1).

A seventh preliminary bout, featuring six-time Bellator MMA veteran Matt “The Mangler” Bessette (13-6) against fellow featherweight Josh LaBerge (9-4) – who enters the bout on a seven-fight winning streak – takes place after the night’s Spike TV-broadcast main card and is being held exclusively for the evening’s live audience.

Tickets for “Bellator: British Invasion,” which start at just $25, are already on sale at Ticketmaster.com and Bellator.com. The night’s finalized lineup will be announced shortly.

The three new matchups all stream live on Spike.com beginning at 6:45 p.m. ET (3:45 p.m. PT local time) and precede the evening’s five-fight Spike TV-televised main card (9 p.m. ET).

Butler, of Rochester, Minn., has been fighting professionally since 2010 and opened his career with nine consecutive victories, including three-straight knockout wins under the Bellator MMA banner. The 31-year-old slugger has fought to a decision just once in his professional career and owns six career knockout wins and two victories by submission. Meanwhile, Diekmann, of Groton, Conn., is also a heavy-handed slugger who boasts 11 career victories by knockout and another four by submission. The 38-year-old heavyweight owns a pair of Bellator MMA wins – both of which averaged just under one minute in length.

Juarez, of Torrance, Calif., is a familiar face on the West Coast fight scene who has been competing professionally since 2006. The 33-year-old made his Bellator MMA debut in the promotion’s second event and has since earned a 6-1 mark competing for the promotion. He now meets Ward, of Waterford, Conn., a onetime Bellator MMA Middleweight Title Challenger who has been competing exclusively for the promotion since 2012. The 26-year-old former Division III All-American wrestler has developed into a heavy-handed mixed-martial-artist, owning six career wins by knockout.

Butcher, of Huntington, W.V., is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under Jorge Gurgel who makes his seventh appearance for Bellator MMA. All eight of Butcher’s career wins have come by way of finish, with five submissions and three knockouts, while his lone loss came by way of decision. McCrory, of Cortland, N.Y., recently returned from a five-year layoff to register a devastating first-round knockout victory, needed just 21 seconds to secure the win.

Flynn, of Mashpee, Mass., competes under the Bellator MMA banner for the first time and has never fought to a judges’ decision in six professional contests. He meets New York resident Gracie, a Renzo Gracie pupil who also makes his Bellator MMA debut.

Maldonado, of Latham, N.Y., is also a Renzo Gracie fighter who has made two previous Bellator MMA appearances but is still in search of his first win. He meets Tugman, of North Haven, Conn., who earned a Bellator MMA win over Brandon Fleming in September.

Costa, of Tauton, Mass., makes his professional debut against Hernandez, of Lynn, Mass., who has earned split results in his first two contests.

RABCHENKO HONOURED TO BE PART OF JOSE SULAIMAN MEMORIAL WORLD CUP

SERGEY RABCHENKO says he’s honoured to be made the favourite for the inaugural Jose Sulaiman Memorial World Cup.

It was the late WBC president’s dream to see an eight man tournament take place, but previous plans were postponed due to his failing health.

Now Sampson Lewkowicz has resurrected the concept in honour of the great man and Rabchenko has been selected as one of the participants.

The WBC had ordered a rematch between the 28-year-old Belarusian and Australia’s Anthony Mundine for its Silver title, hoping the fight would make up part of the tournament, but Mundine has turned down the opportunity in order to explore other options.

“It is a huge honour for me to box in the Jose Sulaiman Cup. I was the proud holder of the WBC’s Silver title and I will win another WBC belt in Sulaiman’s memory,” Rabchenko, who is trained by Ricky Hatton, said.

“I want a rematch with Mundine because I believe I won in November, but he doesn’t want to be in the tournament. I think he’s scared of fighting me in a neutral country.

“The judges cost a win in Australia. That’s history now. I’m focused on getting back to full fitness with Ricky Hatton and winning this tournament.

“I thank Sampson Lewkowicz for putting this together and I look forward to breaking three opponents and then getting a world title shot.”

The tournament’s quarter finals will be held in two brackets with WBC number 8 John Jackson facing WBC number 13 Dennis Laurente and Yudel Jhonson squaring off with Jorge Cota.

Rabchenko is in the second bracket and will face Argentina’s Luciano Cuello while unbeaten American Dominique Dalton is set to meet Lukasz Maciec of Poland.

Each participant will receive US$50,000 for appearing the tournament. Those reaching the semi-finals will be paid a further $100,000 and finalists will earn another $200,000, taking their total purses up to $350,000.

Quarter final bouts will consist of ten rounds. The semi-finals and final will be held over 12 under WBC rules.

All fights will be held in Las Vegas, with the quarters taking place in April/May. The semi-finals are scheduled for September and the final will take place in February 2016.

Peter Davis is one of the most recognizable sportsmen in the country and he will take on Rajinder Singh Meena on one of these fights while Malaysian fan favorite Ann Osman will take on Hawaiian teenage sensation Angela Lee.”

Peter Davis is one of the most prominent faces in sports in Malaysia today. An established actor and model in the country, Davis is currently riding a three-fight winning streak in ONE Championship. An exponent of the Chinese martial art of Wuji Chuan, Davis is a certified finisher with none of his bouts in the organization having gone the distance.

Rajinder Singh Meena is an Indian mixed martial arts veteran. The lightweight is one of the leading stars in the MMA scene in India, having competed in the main event of several shows held in the country. Singh Meena is also a proven finisher, and all of his victories have come via either submission or knockout.

Ann Osman is a pioneer of female mixed martial arts in Asia. She burst onto the scene with a series of impressive performances, including her victory over boxing world champion Ana Julaton at ONE FC: REIGN OF CHAMPIONS. Osman has effective takedowns and powerful ground-and-pound, making her a formidable foe for anybody in the division.

Angela Lee is currently living in Hawaii and of Singapore and Korean descent. The eldest child of two Taekwondo instructor parents, Angela grew up practicing various forms of martial arts, and quickly built an impressive resume. Her list of accolades includes being state wrestling champion and World Athlima Pangration Federation champion. She is also a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu purple belt, and an amateur strawweight champion in mixed martial arts. Lee now makes her much-awaited professional debut as she takes on one of the most recognizable faces in women mixed martial arts.

Thanh “Aladdin” Vu is an Australian-Vietnamese mixed martial artist who is rated as one of the best prospects in his weight class in Australia. Vu is a decorated grappler who has placed in Grappler’s Realm Australia and Events BJJ tournaments. Vu is a crowd favorite with his all-action style and will look to replicate the style that made him a fan-favorite in his flyweight debut.

Gianni Subba is one of the most promising mixed martial arts prospects in the world. Subba has looked impressive since bursting onto the scene in 2012, finishing four of the five opponents in his professional mixed martial arts career. At just 22, Gianni Subba can prove once again why he is considered one of the most talented young stars in the flyweight division.

Anatpong Bunrad is a Thai flyweight currently residing in Belgium. Bunrad’s family moved to Belgium as a child but he maintained his heritage by picking up Muay Thai. He is also a black belt in Shihaishinkai Karate. Bunrad has set his sights on becoming the first MMA world champion of Thai descent and wants to achieve that goal in ONE FC. He made a successful ONE FC debut by finishing Marc Marcellinus with a liver kick last November.

Saiful Merican is a Malaysian Muay Thai practitioner and one of the most skilled strikers in the division. He has more than a hundred professional Muay Thai fights and possesses ferocious kicks that have knocked out many opponents. Nicknamed “The Vampire” by fans for his fast and intense style, he returns to the ONE FC cage to take on Anatpong Bunrad.

Ev Ting is regarded as one of Malaysia’s top MMA fighters. Ting is of Malaysian Chinese ancestry but his family relocated to New Zealand when he was seven years old. It was an MMA highlight reel that he discovered on the internet that first sparked his interest in training in the sport, and he quickly found a home at Auckland MMA in 2009. After an undefeated stint as an amateur, Ting made his professional debut in 2011 after excelling as an amateur. Ting has won both his bouts in ONE FC and will look to keep the streak going when he takes on Cary Bullos.

Cary Bullos is the URCC Visayas Bantamweight Champion. He has finished all of his opponents in his seven victories thus far. The promising Filipino MMA stalwart is eager to get his first win in ONE FC and will look to spoil Ting’s homecoming.

Chan Rothana is a Cambodian Bantamweight with a background in Khmer kickboxing. He was the heavy favorite in the Cambodian Featherweight Grand Prix at ONE FC: RISE OF THE KINGDOM but came up short in the Final. He now gets the opportunity to showcase his skills against international talent and will compete outside his home country for the first time in his mixed martial arts career.

Ramon Gonzalez is a mixed martial artist from the Philippines. Gonzalez has vast experience in the Filipino martial art of Yaw Yan, and has recently into mixed martial arts. He will get a chance to showcase his talents on a global stage when he makes his promotional debut at ONE FC: AGE OF CHAMPIONS

Klitschko – Jennings Press Conference Quotes From Madison Square Garden

wklitschko
New York City (February 4, 2015) – IBF/WBA/WBO/IBO and “The Ring Magazine” World Heavyweight Champion WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO and top rated challenger BRYANT JENNINGS along with their respective teams held the Kick-Off Press conference for their highly anticipated battle set for Saturday, April 25 at Madison Square Garden, “The World’s Most Famous Arena.”

“THE CHAMPION RETURNS” will be televised Live on HBO World Championship Boxing beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT in the United States and RTL in Germany among the more than 150 countries which will telecast the event.

Presented by K2 Promotions and Klitschko Management Group in association with Gary Shaw Productions, tickets priced at $1000, $600, $300, $200 and $100 can be purchased through the Madison Square Garden Box Office, www.TheGarden.com and www.Ticketmaster.com.

WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO
“Let us, Bryant and me, entertain you on April 25th here in New York at Madison Square Garden. I see how Bryant Jennings acts. I see how he walks, I see how he shakes hands, I see how he speaks, and he has the qualities of Rocky Balboa from Philadelphia.”

“Thank you to HBO. Eventually you believed in me. I’m back on your network and I’m happy about it. Like Sinatra said, ‘If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere. Right event, right venue and right city. I fought here for the first time 15 years ago and I’m so happy to come back here and fight.”

BRYANT JENNINGS:
“This is it. I like to thank everyone involved with this promotion and my city of Philadelphia. It took a long time to make this fight happen and through it all I stayed calm. I commend my team for allowing me to be the athlete that I am while these negotiations were going on. On April 25th history will definitely be made and it will be made by me. One of us has to lose and it isn’t going to be me. Enough of the talking, I’m ready to fight.”

BERND BOENT/CEO, KMG Management:
“This is Wladimir’s 27th world title fight, it was 15 years ago when he first fought here. I’d like to thank Joel Fisher and his terrific team here at Madison Square Garden, this venue truly is the home of heavyweight champions and we are very excited to have this event here. I’d also like to thank our broadcast partners HBO and RTL without whom events like this would be possible.

TOM LOEFFLER/K2 Promotions:
“This is K2 Promotions’ eighth event at Madison Square Garden and we’re honored to work with the outstanding team here. We’ve already sold over 5,000 tickets which is just an incredible response to announcing this event.”

GARY SHAW/Gary Shaw Productions:
“Madison Square Garden is the mecca of boxing, the ring is in the Hall of Fame, this is what heavyweight boxing is all about. 25 years ago on February 11, 1990, Buster Douglas knocked out Mike Tyson. I believe on April 25th history will once again be made for an American heavyweight to do something spectacular, but this time instead of being overseas, it will be here in the United States at the Madison Square Garden. I believe Bryant Jennings will become the unified heavyweight champion of the world on April 25th.”

JAMES PRINCE, Manager of Jennings:
“This is a dream come true for us and we can’t wait. There are a lot of doubters out there right now and they believe there is no way Bryant Jennings is going to be able to deliver a victory on April 25th. I would like for you all to show up because Bryant Jennings is going to show out, and we shall be champion.”

FRED JENKINS, Trainer of Jennings:
“I do know the pedigree of where Bryant Jennings comes from, he’s going to give it all he’s got. This is a one sided fight and I believe its going to be all Bryant “By-By” Jennings.”

Bellator MMA Lightweight World Champion Will Brooks meets Dave Jansen on April 10 at Bren Events Center in Irvine, Calif.

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (February 4, 2015) – Bellator MMA Lightweight World Champion “Ill” Will Brooks (15-1) returns to action on April 10, when he faces top contender Dave “The Fugitive” Jansen (20-2) at Bren Events Center in Irvine, Calif on April 10.

The two men compete in the headlining bout of the newly announced “Bellator: Brooks vs. Jansen” event, which also features a middleweight affair between Brazilian knockout machine Rafael Carvalho (10-1) and another man known for his sensational striking in Joe Schilling (2-3)

Both bouts take place on the evening’s main card, which airs live and free on Spike TV at 9 p.m. ET/ 8 p.m. CT, while preliminary bouts stream on Spike.com at 7 p.m. ET.

Tickets for “Bellator: Brooks vs. Jansen” go on sale next Friday, Feb. 13 at 10 a.m. PT and are available online at www.ucirvinetickets.com (under the Bren Events Center tab) and through the UC Irvine Ticket Office.

“I’m really looking forward to this one,” said Bellator President Scott Coker. “Brooks and Schilling were two huge components to our successful show last November, and I wanted to get them another fight as quickly as possible.” With Will Brooks, you’ve got a phenomenal athlete with a tremendous personality. He is someone who brings it each and every time he gets in the cage. Joe Schilling is one of those incredible strikers who just has danger written all over him. I think our team has really done a great job in finding both of these guys extremely tough opponents in Jansen and Carvalho respectively, and I’m happy that I’ll have one of the best seats in the house..

Additional bouts will be announced shortly.

The 28-year-old Brooks looks to make the first defense of the undisputed Bellator MMA Lightweight World Title he earned in November with a thrilling, fourth-round finish of former champ Michael Chandler. Prior to the win, Brooks boasted Bellator MMA’s Interim Lightweight World Title, which he also earned with a victory over Chandler. Overall, Brooks – an American Top Team athlete – is on a seven-fight winning streak and has lost just once in his 16-fight career.

Across the cage from him, the 35-year-old Jansen also brings a seven-fight winning streak to the cage. An eight-year veteran of the sport, Jansen earned his shot at the belt with a 2012 tournament victory after registering wins over Marcin Held, Ricardo Tirloni and Magomed Saadulaev. He was scheduled to fight for the title in 2013, but an injury forced him to withdraw from the contest. Once healthy, rather than sit around and wait for a rescheduled title shot, Jansen chose to remain active, scoring an October 2014 win over Rick Hawn.

Carvalho is a 28-year-old Brazilian who made an immediate impact in his promotional debut, scoring a first-round TKO win over nine-time Bellator MMA veteran Brian Rogers. Carvalho is quickly establishing himself as one of the most devastating strikers in the world today, notching nine of his 10 career wins by knockout, including five that came in the first round. Carvalho lost his professional debut in 2011 but has since earned 10 straight victories.

The 31-year-old Schilling has been fighting professionally since 2006, starting his combat sports career in kickboxing, where he earned both U.S. national and world titles in Muay Thai. While he’s since turned his focus to MMA, Schilling continues to compete in striking events, as well, working his way to GLORY’s Last Man Standing tournament this past June, competing three times in a single evening. Schilling made his Bellator MMA debut in November, scoring a “Knockout of the Year” candidate with his stoppage of noted striker Melvin Manhoef.

Training camp quotes from Boxcino jr. middleweight participants.

UNCASVILLE, CONN. (February 4, 2015) – We are just over a week away from the much anticipated Boxcino 2015 Jr. Middleweight Tournament.

With training camps winding down, each fighter provided Banner Promotions with an update on how the final preparations are going.

Cleotis Pendarvis
“Training camp is going well. We are just toning it down and getting ready for action. Pinell is a pretty decent fighter but he is in over his head in this fight.”

vs.

Ricardo Pinell
“Training is going good. I have been awake extra early and am the first person in the gym and the last to leave. I have been grinding. Cleotis is a southpaw as well. We were both in camp with Amir Khan. We both sparred him and at the end of the day we sparred each other. I got to have a little look at him. He is slick and has experience and is pretty crafty. ”

Stanyslav Skorokhod
“Training is going very well. I am getting very good sparring at the Wild Card Gym and am improving a lot with my new trainers and team in Los Angeles. Michael Moore is a good boxer but I don’t think he will be able to deal with my power.”

vs.

Michael Moore
“Things have been great as far as training. We have had some great sparring with Demetrius Andrade and Edwin Rodriguez. There is no reason why we should not win Boxcino. We just hope my opponent is ready and game to put on a good show. This is his second bout in the United States but now he is going up against quality opposition.”

Brandon Adams
“Camp is good. Better than I anticipated. I am still in shape from my last fight. Going down in weight is going real well. Better than anybody expected. I think Alex is coming to fight and so am I. I hope he is looking to wow the fans because I will.”

vs.

Alex Perez
“Everything is smooth. I am just focused on Brandon Adams and February 13 when everything will come together.”

Vito Gasparyan
“Everything is perfect. I have the best sparring partners. I can’t wait for the fight. I haven’t seen much of Hardy. I do know he is from Guyana. I have boxed taller guys and they are top level. I am experienced enough to handle anything he can bring.”

vs.

Simeon Hardy
“Everything is great. I am in great shape. I just hope he comes in great shape and we fight like true sportsmen because I will be ready to fight and win.

IRON BOY 19 BOXER EDGAR BRITO FIGHTS FOR FANS, WOUNDED WARRIOR PROJECT

PHOENIX – February 4, 2015 – With a maturity uncharacteristic of a twenty year old, Edgar Brito (3-0-1, 2KO) will walk into the ring on February 28th with the weight of his family, fans and two cities on his shoulders. Boxing since he was thirteen years old, Brito takes to heart the time and money his father/trainer Edgar Sr. has spent to advance his son’s boxing career over the years. “He’s spent all of his money helping me to get to this point in my career. He’s my trainer, and my loudest supporter at my fights,” said Brito of his father. As in most father-son/trainer-trainee relationships, it isn’t always sunshine and rainbows. Said Brito, “Sometimes we get along great, and sometimes we want to jump in the ring and beat each other up.”

The two meet daily at Brito’s Boxing Gym in Downtown Glendale. “I grew up, and now train, live and work here in Glendale,” said Brito, who, in addition to boxing, works full time as an Insurance Agent. “I feel like the hometown fighter here. My posters are up at various businesses around town, and I’m often stopped for photos. I have a lot of supporters here. My clients and their friends, and people around the city buy tickets from me and support me each time I fight. I want to make sure they get their money’s worth – they are buying tickets, taking their time to drive to Celebrity Theatre and support me. I sell each ticket personally, and feel very motivated to put on a good show for each and every supporter.”

Across the US-Mexico border, in Brito’s hometown of Cuernavaca, Morelos, a small wave of supporters grows with each fight. Businesses throughout the town put up posters of their hometown fighter, and Brito honors the state of Morelos with a patch on his trunks. Brito doesn’t like to talk about immigrating to the US, as it is a contentious topic for many in Arizona. As a non-citizen, he was unable to compete in national tournaments in the United States, potentially limiting his exposure to big name promoters. With the introduction of the US’ DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) program, Brito has the opportunity to work and live in the US, and presses forward in his professional career. Brito signed with Arizona-based Iron Boy Promotions in 2013, and has since fought all four of his professional fights with the growing promotional company.

A staunch supporter of the US Military, Brito plans to donate a portion of his purse to the Wounded Warrior Project, whose logo adorns his trunks each fight. Many of his friends joined the military after high school, and found themselves deployed to Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan. One in particular inspired Brito’s commitment to the Wounded Warrior Project. “One of my closest friends returned from multiple tours in Afghanistan and Iraq after having been shot, and having had a grenade explode near his position,” said Brito. “He has physical scars – a finger that doesn’t work, shrapnel embedded in his body. He returned with PTSD, having flashbacks of combat, and just really struggled. The Wounded Warrior Project helped him more than any other organization, getting him physical therapy and the counseling he needed.” Brito’s promoter, Iron Boy Promotions, plans to match his contribution to the organization.

Brito returns to the ring February 28th in a rematch with Jesus Pacheco, who he faced in his third professional fight last April. Like many boxers, Brito maintains an extremely high standard for himself, and wasn’t satisfied with the result of their first encounter. “It was a really hard fight for me,” said Brito of the match. “I got a pretty nasty cut. I’m not making excuses, but that definitely tripped me out. I wasn’t happy when they announced that I won via split decision.” Brito has made adjustments since the first bout, and expects a more advantageous outcome. “This is my chance to redeem myself. I have become more of a defensive fighter, and gotten my timing down better. I’ll be coming into the ring to take his head off.” Those are fighting words, coming from a fighter motivated by his obligation to his fans, family and the cities of Glendale and Cuernavaca.

Brito fights February 28th at Iron Boy 19 at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix, Arizona. Tickets are priced $30, 50 and 65 and are available at www.ironboyboxing.com or at the Celebrity Theatre Box Office.

Returning to HBO® for his third straight fight, Philadelphia native Jennings has compiled a record of 19-0-0 (10KO’s) over his five-year professional career.

Making his HBO and Madison Square Garden debut on January 25, 2014, the 30-year-old Jennings devastatingly stopped undefeated Polish contender Artur Szpilka in the tenth and final round.

Following up on his knockout victory over Szpilka, Jennings won a 12-round unanimous decision over top contender Mike Perez on July 26, 2014 setting up the showdown with Klitschko.

Fight Network Presents RFA 23: Murphy vs. Ware LIVE this Friday, Feb. 6 at 10 p.m. ET

Toronto – Fight Network, the world’s premier 24/7 television channel dedicated to complete coverage of combat sports, presents another stacked card from Resurrection Fighting Alliance as the promotion heads back to southern Calfornia for RFA 23: Murphy vs. Ware at The Hangar at the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa, Calif.

The entire main card will be televised live at 10 p.m. ET nationwide in Canada and globally in over 30 countries across Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

RFA 23: Murphy vs. Ware will feature a main event between two of the world’s most exciting bantamweight prospects as Joe Murphy returns to the RFA octagon fresh off a spectacular RFA debut in December. He will face fellow RFA vet and southern California native Terrion “Flash” Ware in a high-stakes bantamweight showdown.

In the co-main event, former RFA title contender Gabriel “Zangief” Checco and “TUF 11” alum Joseph “Leonidas” Henle will meet in a middleweight bout.

“Joe Murphy vs. Terrion Ware will be an exciting main event between two of the top bantamweight prospects in the sport,” stated RFA president Ed Soares. “They have both proven themselves on the talent-rich southern California MMA scene and in the RFA octagon. This will be a fantastic fight in our return to Orange County at RFA 23.”

Murphy (8-1) returns to the RFA two months after a spectacular promotional debut. Murphy, who was born and raised in Orange County, needed less than three minutes to dispatch world class jiu-jitsu practitioner Bruno Frazatto via TKO at RFA 21 and will be riding that momentum into the same building where that demolition took place. Murphy is a Cleber Luciano protégé that made a name for himself on the national jiu-jitsu and submission grappling circuit. He also excelled in high school wrestling, which has given him a very potent and balanced style of grappling for MMA. These skills have translated into five submission wins in his MMA career before he got to showcase his potent striking skills in December. Murphy is eager to shine once again on the international stage in the main event of RFA 23.

“I’m honored to get the main event spot in my hometown at RFA 23,” stated Murphy. “Facing Terrion Ware is a brilliant move by the matchmaker, because we both show up to bring it.”

Ware (12-3) returns to the RFA after making a successful promotional debut at RFA 12. Ware took that fight at RFA 12 on a week’s notice after his teammate Marcus Kowal suffered an injury a week before the fight. Ware stepped up and submitted RFA vet Zac Chavez in the second round via rear-naked choke in a bout that impressed everyone in attendance. In the time since, Ware has won and defended a regional title and is eager to get back in the RFA octagon.

“This is a great match-up between two high-level guys,” Ware explained. “Joe Murphy is a high-level grappler and that’s what you get with the RFA. You’re only going to fight high-level guys on their way up and that’s what Murphy is going to get with me. Getting to fight in the main event for the RFA doesn’t happen for a lot of people, so I feel very fortunate and look forward it.”

The co-main event of RFA 23 will also see the return of Gabriel “Zangief” Checco (7-1). Checco returns to the RFA after headlining RFA 19 in a bout that saw the winner Jake Collier take home the RFA middleweight title and immediately get signed by the UFC. Checco realizes what is at stake with a big win in the RFA and the newly promoted jiu-jitsu black belt is eager to show what he can do in his sophomore performance for the promotion.

“I’m excited about this fight, because I feel like I will be fighting in my second home of southern California. It’s only a few hours from Las Vegas, where I now live.” stated Checco. “I also feel less pressure in this fight, than I did in my North American debut where I fought for the belt. Joseph Henle is a good wrestler and likes the ground game, which is what I like, but I’m also feeling very confident in my hands. I’m looking forward to this new challenge.”

Awaiting Checco, will be Henle (9-1-1) who is a native of southern California that many remember from his time competing on the eleventh season of the UFC’s hit reality show The Ultimate Fighter. In the first episode, Henle submitted current UFC star Constantinos Philippou via armbar to earn a spot in the house. Since competing on the show, Henle has compiled an impressive 6-1-1 record, while competing in the United States and Canada. Henle is now ready to make a statement in the RFA octagon.

“I’m really excited about this opportunity to fight for the RFA,” Henle explained. “Checco is a really solid, well-rounded guy. He brings the wood when he throws and he has a really good ground game. This is an exciting challenge and I look forward to showing everyone what I can do.”

The main card of RFA 23 will also include a high-octane featherweight showdown between RFA fan favorites Raoni Barcelos (7-1) and Jamal Parks (5-0). In the lightweight division, undefeated jiu-jitsu world champion Marcelo “Lapela” Mafra (6-0) faces RFA vet Ricky Legere Jr. (19-6) who will be making his lightweight debut. In the women’s strawweight division, RFA fan favorite Jocelyn Jones-Lybarger (4-1) looks for her third straight RFA win against the undefeated and highly-touted Maria Rios (2-0). RFA 23 will also see the return of two exciting middleweights as John Hackleman Jr. (2-1), the son of famed MMA trainer John Hackleman, returns to face Blake Troop (3-2).

The entire main card of RFA 23: Murphy vs. Ware will be televised live on Fight Network starting at 10 p.m. ET on Friday, Feb. 6.

RFA 23 will be the promotion’s second event in Orange County and its fifth event to take place in southern California. It will be the first time the RFA has visited “The Golden State” of California in 2015.

BROADWAY BOXING’S NORTHERN EXPANSION

dbe_logo
New York, NY (2/4/15) – For the first time in its 12-year existence, Broadway Boxing heads north to the suburbs of Westchester County, NY, when DiBella Entertainment stages an exciting card from top to bottom, headlined by undefeated prospects Bryant “Pee-wee” Cruz (13-0, 7KO’s) and Frank “Notorious” Galarza (15-0-2, 9KO’s) in separate eight-round bouts at the beautiful Hilton Westchester in Rye Brook, NY.

The red-hot Galarza, seen as one of the most promising and exciting junior middleweights in all of boxing, is set to square off against hard-hitting fellow prospect Michael Finney (12-1-1, 10KO’s) in a mouth-watering 154lb. affair.

Cruz, from Port Chester, NY, is considered Westchester county’s favorite ‘boxing’ son and with the Hilton Westchester just minutes away, Cruz’ legion of fans are expected to come out in droves as the fast-rising junior lightweight continues his ascent up the ranks of the 130lb. division in what will be his Westchester debut.

“This is going to be our first ever Broadway Boxing show in Westchester and we are truly excited about it. It allows us to expand the series into a new territory and reach an entirely new fan-base. We anticipate a terrific card from top to bottom and hope that this will be the first of many cards to come in the area.”

“First and foremost, I want to thank my promoters DiBella Entertainment and New Legend Boxing for this opportunity to showcase my skills. I had a big year last year, but I am planning on having an even bigger year in 2015. I want to show the world that I am not only a top prospect but hands-down I am one of the best fighters in the entire 154lb. division. To do that, I must continue to look impressive with each and every outing and, on February 20th, I plan on putting on another spectacular performance,” said Galarza.

“Ever since I turned pro, people all over Westchester have been asking me when I am fighting here at home. Now the time is finally here and I couldn’t be more excited about it. Fighting so close to home, it gives a lot of people who haven’t had a chance to see me fight to come out and show their support.

The Brooklyn-native Galarza, a NY Golden Gloves champion, who turned pro in 2010, had a break-out year in 2014, beginning with his highlight reel second-round knockout over previously undefeated and highly regarded John Thompson (14-0) on “ShoBox: The New Generation” in January. Galarza followed up that performance with another second-round knockout over Franklin Gomez in April, before returning to the “ShoBox” series and cruising to an eight-round unanimous decision over undefeated Sebastien Bouchard (8-0). Galarza finished off the year by dropping and dominating Johnathan Batista (14-3) before Batista was disqualified in the fifth round for repeated illegal blows. Galarza is looking to continue his rise and begin making the transition from up-and-coming prospect to legitimate contender when he takes on the dangerous and heavy-handed Finney.

Cruz, the runner-up at the 2012 National Golden Gloves, turned pro in December of that same year and has kept a busy schedule, scoring 13 consecutive victories in just under a two-year span. Backed by Westchester County’s premier chain of sports bars (Mickey, Maggie and Molly Spillane’s), Cruz has quickly become the most popular fighter that the suburb county of New York City has seen in many years. It will be the first time Cruz has fought in the county since his amateur days, and he will be ready to put on a spectacular performance come February 20th.

Both bouts are being promoted in association with New Legend Boxing. Additional bouts, including an opponent for Cruz will be announced shortly.

Tickets are priced at $100, $60 and $40, and are currently on sale through the DiBella Entertainment office by calling (212) 947-2577. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the first bout scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

The Hilton Westchester is located at 699 Westchester Avenue, Rye Brook, NY 10573.

Nielsen primed for WBC International Cruiserweight title challenge

icki Nielsen (16-0, 12 KOs) can continue his ‘Road To Glory’ on Saturday night when he challenges Julio Cesar Dos Santos (27-3, 24 KOs) for the vacant WBC International Cruiserweight title at the Arena Nord in Frederikshavn, Denmark.

The Dane spoke about the importance of the fight at a press conference today in Copenhagen. ‘’This is the biggest test of my career so far,’’ said the 21 year-old. ‘’Victory will put me in line for bigger and better fights. Losing is not an option!

‘’Dos Santos is a tough opponent, but me and my coach Joey Gamache have studied him well and we believe we have the perfect plan to beat him. I’ve trained hard and I’ve trained smart. On Saturday night, I will continue my journey to the top.’’

Nielsen’s coach, former two-time world champion, Joey Gamache, shares his young charge’s confidence and believe the current WBC Youth Champion is ready to add another title to his collection.

“I have studied Dos Santos so much that I feel like I could get in the ring with him,’’ said Gamache. ‘’We’ve been working on some new angles and techniques to break Dos Santos’ defence up. We’re well prepared and I’m confident Micki will be taking the title home on Saturday night.

“I’ve been really pleased with Micki’s development the past 12 months. He has an incredible punch, but technically he is constantly developing. The Perdomo-fight has given him a lot a lot of confidence and he still has so much untapped potential. In Frederikshavn, I’m going to unleash the beast!’’

Dos Santos has travelled from sunny Sao Paulo in an attempt to capture the WBC International crown. He too is aware of the importance this fight holds.

‘’This is a massive fight for both of us,’’ said the power-punching Brazilian. ‘’The winner will have the opportunity to move on to bigger fights and challenge for bigger titles. I dream about fighting the top names in the division, and Micki Nielsen is the stepping-stone for me.

“I have great respect for Nielsen. He is a skilled boxer who still is still developing. However on Saturday night, I will be doing everything possible to put a stop to his development. I never go into a fight with the aim to put people down, but if I get the opportunity I will exploit it, like I have done many times before.’’

Nielsen’s WBC International title challenge tops the bill at the Arena Nord in Frederikshavn, which also features the WBC Baltic Welterweight title fight between Anthony Yigit (11-0-1, 4 KOs) and Kim Poulsen (26-1, 7 KOs), Dennis Ceylan’s (12-0-1, 6 KOs) rematch with Cristian Montilla (6-3-1, 3 KOs), rising Danish stars Abdul Khattab (9-0, 3 KOs) and Rashid Kassem (6-0, 3 KOs), Norwegian talents Tim-Robin Lihaug (9-1, 5 KOs), Simen Smaadal (8-1, 3 KOs), Alexander Hagen (5-1, 1 KO) and Kai Robin Havnaa (1-0), and Ghanaian lightweight Richard Commey (19-0, 17 KOs).

INSIDE TEAM FURY (PART 2)

BOLTON (4 FEB) By Peter Fury: Sparring began for real on Monday and it was great to see Tyson and Hughie get put through their paces by a number of quality heavyweights.

For this particular camp we’ve got Kevin Johnson, the American heavyweight due to fight Anthony Joshua in April, as well as Marcin Rekowski, who is 15-1, and Sean ‘Sexy’ Turner from Dublin. It’s a nice mix of experience and youth.

We’ve had Kevin twice in camp now and it’s always good to have him around. He’s a good lad, Kevin, and he’s the ultimate professional. He does his job properly. When he’s got the bit between his teeth and has a big fight coming up, you get good work out of him. He does what he needs to do and is ideal for what we need.

Not everybody is, though. The likes of Johnson come back to us because they like what they see, we’re fair with them and they want to return. The ones who don’t come back, however, are the ones who come over and don’t perform in sparring. They don’t give me what I want. Some of them come over and think they’re just getting an easy payday. They do the bare minimum and expect that to be enough. Then comes the reality check. We soon get rid of them.

Sparring, I believe, is majorly important to a fighter’s development. You have to have it because it helps detect any mistakes and flaws. You’ll quickly pick up on and work on mistakes if a boxer is being punished by a sparring partner every time he makes one. Sparring puts boxers under pressure. They’re getting punched back and they’re simulating a fight.

Also, when you have sparring partners they’re not used to, and you then rotate them – in and out – it’s a different ball game. It’s impossible for Tyson and Hughie to get accustomed to any one style. Just when they think they’ve sussed one of the sparring partners, he’ll jump out and another one will jump in. It teaches them to be adjustable and to develop not just one way of fighting but a variety of ways of fighting.

Typically, I’ll have a sparring partner do no more than one round at a time. Johnson, for example, will do a round and will then be replaced by Rekwoski. After Rekowski’s done a round, he’ll be replaced by Turner and so on. I find it keeps them fresh if I’m only giving them a round at a time. They know they can give their maximum effort for that one round and then refresh afterwards ready for the next round we need from them.

Tyson and Hughie, during these sessions, will simply work on what they’re being told. It’s almost as if the opponent in front of them doesn’t exist. They’ll just go through the motions and work on what they need to work on. They’ll work on their flaws. If we’re looking to work a certain style, they’ll practice that and make the mistakes in sparring rather than on fight night itself. They’re just working on their game plan. It’s not about getting the better of the sparring partner or beating them up. That doesn’t prove anything at this stage. They have no interest in that. They’re simply focused on working towards fight night.

All in all, I’ll look for Tyson and Hughie to spar five days a week and they’ll do ten rounds each. It’s enough.

For Hughie, in particular, this camp is vital. Hughie is in a big fight and he’s right up there now and ready to go in with the big boys. He’s always done full-on sparring, to be fair, so this is nothing new to him. The only things that have hampered Hughie in the past have been health issues.

But now he’s back to full strength and he’s going okay so far. So far, so good. He doesn’t have a problem being thrown into hard sparring. He can mix it with the best. He’s shown that in previous camps; anybody who has shared the ring with him knows how good Hughie Fury is…

Lucas Browne backs Fury to overcome Rudenko threat on February 21

LONDON (4 FEB) Australian heavyweight contender Lucas ‘Big Daddy’ Browne has backed Hughie Fury to defeat Andriy Rudenko on February 21 in Monte Carlo, but has warned the youngster not to take the Ukrainian dangerman lightly.

Browne defeated Rudenko over twelve rounds last August and is well aware of just how durable and dangerous Fury’s next opponent will be later this month.

“Rudenko is one of those hard-nut fighters who keep coming and makes you work,” said Browne, 22-0 (19 KOs).

“When we fought last year, I wasn’t fit enough, I weighed too much and I almost wanted to give up. Nothing was going right for me in my personal life and it came out in my boxing.

“Rudenko wasn’t better than I expected him to be, but he was much tougher. I hit hard and know I do, but he stood there and just took it all.

“I realised in about the fifth round that I wasn’t going to knock him out, so I had to think points. I needed to land good, hard hits to accumulate points and win the rounds.”

Browne gained victory over Rudenko via a close but unanimous decision. Fury, meanwhile, fifteen years Browne’s junior at 20, is looking to make it fifteen wins from fifteen against the Dnipropetrovsk-native.

“I haven’t seen too much of Hughie but am very eager to make a direct comparison on February 21,” said Browne. “I think we can expect a good, old-fashioned war and a points decision. I have a feeling Fury will get the nod so long as he’s fit and moves well on the night.

“If he wins, and keeps winning, I could end up fighting Hughie one day. We’ll see. It depends on how he goes on February 21. He has to chase me at the moment.”

*** Fury vs. Rudenko is part of the ‘Thunderbolt in Monaco’ show on February 21 (Channel 5). Headlining the event will be the WBA Super world middleweight title fight between the fearsome Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin and Britain’s Martin Murray ***
