Bellator MMA finalizes Spike TV lineup for “Manhoef vs. Shlemenko” With Addition of Chris Honeycutt vs. Clayton MacFarlane

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (December 22, 2014) – The four-fight Spike TV-broadcast main card is now complete for February’s “Bellator: Manhoef vs. Shlemenko” event with a battle of undefeated prospects, as Chris “The Cutt” Honeycutt (5-0) meets Clayton MacFarlane (4-0) in a welterweight contest.

Featuring a thrilling middleweight matchup between two of the most dangerous strikers in all of mixed martial arts with former Bellator MMA champ Alexander “Storm” Shlemenko (50-9) facing fellow knockout artist Melvin “No Mercy” Manhoef (29-12-1), “Bellator: Manhoef vs. Shlemenko” takes place Feb. 13 at Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif.

The 26-year-old Honeycutt is a two-time NCAA Division I All-American wrestler out of Edinboro University who was also a two-time high school state wrestling champion in his native Ohio. Following his collegiate wrestling career, which ended with a runner-up finish in the 2012 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championship, Honeycutt enlisted the help of fellow Edinboro wrestler Josh Koscheck and now trains at the longtime MMA veteran’s Dethrone Base Camp in Fresno.

Honeycutt made his Bellator MMA debut in September, scoring a second-round TKO win over gritty Englishman Aaron “The Daywalker” Wilkinson.

Meanwhile, MacFarlane makes his Bellator MMA debut after building an undefeated mark through his first four career contests while competing on California’s regional scene. MacFarlane also boasts a collegiate wrestling background, as he was a 2012 NCAA Division II Wrestling Champion while competing for Missouri’s Lindenwood University Saint Charles.

MacFarlane now calls Carlsbad, Calif., home and currently trains alongside three-time Bellator MMA veteran Derek Anderson, as well as MMA notable Robbie Peralta.

Ismail Özen and Timur Dugazaev win in Hamburg

Supermiddleweight contender Ismail Özen scored his 12th win in his 14th pro fight Saturday night in front of 2,000 fans at CU Arena in Hamburg, Germany, by stopping Haris Calakovic from Serbia in the fifth round. After a slow start Özen unleashed his fury in the fifth nailing Calakovic to the corner with a barrel of unanswered punches forcing his opponent’s corner to throw the towel.

In the co-feature light heavyweight Timur Dugazaev stopped Todor Ilic from Croatia in the second round. The promoter of WBA heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev sent his opponent to the floor three times before German referee Timo Habighorst stepped in to stop the bout. It was Dugazaev’s third win in as many pro fights.

SELDIN WINS TITLE IN WAR WITH JARGAL AT ROCKIN FIGHTS 16

In front of a sold out standing room crowd last night, December 20th, at The Paramount in Huntington, NY, Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing presented the 16th installment of the popular Rockin Fights series. Undefeated power punching prospect Cletus “The Hebrew Hammer” Seldin, 15-0 12KO’s, Shirley, NY, captured the vacant WBC International Jr. Welterweight title with a thrilling 9th round TKO over tough Bayan “The Mongolian Mongoose” Jargal, 16-6-1 11KO’s, Arlington, in the main event scheduled for 10 rounds.

Seldin started like a house on fire as the bell rang for round 1 as he charged right at Jargal and dropped him almost immediately with a picture perfect right hand. Seldin went for the early ending throwing everything at Jargal but Jargal withstood the onslaught and started firing his own shots back as the round ended.

The next three rounds saw toe to toe exchanges much to the delight of the pro Seldin crowd as each fighter landed numerous blows. Jargal tried to mount a comeback midway through the bout as he chased down Seldin landing many combinations to the head and body of Seldin however, Seldin continued to fire back at Jargal. Seldin exploded as the bell sounded for round 7 dropping Jargal for the second time with a 3 punch combination.

The 2 combatants continued to throw everything they had at each but eventually Seldin would get to Jargal late in the 9th round of the scheduled 10 round bout and finally got the stoppage win at 2:46 of the round after a barrage of hard punches to the head. The crowd roared its approval and gave both fighters a long standing ovation for the incredible battle they had just witnessed. With the win Seldin captures the vacant WBC International Jr. Welterweight title.

The much anticipated rematch of their first encounter ( which took place on July 18th of this year on ESPN, a fight which ended prematurely due to an eye injury suffered by Jargal,) did not disappoint as these two warriors fought a high pitched battle in front of a screaming standing room crowd.

The co-feature saw the Paramount debut and recent Star Boxing signing Joe “The Irish Bomber” Smith, 17-1 14KO’s, Mastic, NY, annihilate veteran Maxell Taylor, 18-10-1 8KO’s, Baltimore, MD, in just 37 seconds of the 1st round of a scheduled 8 round Light Heavyweight bout. Smith jumped right on Taylor backing him into a corner quickly and unleashed a non-stop flurry of hard punches to the head of a non-responsive Taylor forcing the referee to call a halt to the proceedings.

In the main event of the evening, veteran mixed martial artist Ji Xian scored a unanimous decision victory over young prospect Song Ya Dong in a memorable striking contest. Ji caught Song with a big punch in the first round, but the younger fighter quickly regained his bearings. Ji and Song viciously exchanged strikes, with the more experienced Ji landing the cleaner blows. In the second round, both combatants continued to pour on the power punches with Song being the busier fighter. In the third, the more experienced Ji began to pull away, dominating Song over the final five minutes of the bout.

In a highly-anticipated matchup, Adrian Pang routed tough lightweight contender Vincent Latoel, winning by submission in round three. Pang, with the edge in power, slugged Latoel with heavy hands whenever he got in close as Latoel opted to fight from a distance. On the ground, Pang scored on a few short elbows from Latoel’s guard. In the second round, Latoel was more effective at fighting from the outside while Pang looked for the takedown. Pang then dropped Latoel with a monstrous right hook but Latoel recovered well. In the third, Pang countered a takedown by pulling a Guillotine Choke, forcing Latoel to tap out.

In the Beijing Featherweight Tournament Final, two explosive striking specialists in Li Kai Wen and Wang Ya Wei went to battle to the delight of a packed crowd. In the second round, Li continued to control the bout with his accurate strikes, earning the victory by unanimous decision and the Beijing Featherweight Tournament Championship trophy.

In the Beijing Flyweight Tournament Final, Li Wei Bin and Wang Wei put on an epic war of attrition for fans in attendance. Li opened up the fight with a well-timed right hand that knocked Wang back, followed by a quick flurry of strikes. Wang was able to counter with a right hook that dropped Li to show fans he was still in it. The second round however saw Li establish his dominance in the striking department, gutting out a solid unanimous decision victory to become the Beijing Flyweight Tournament Champion.

Michal Pasternak overcame a left knee injury to defeat Rafael Silva by decision. The tall and lanky Pasternak used his brute strength to control the action on the ground, battering Silva with a barrage of punches and elbows from mount. In the second round, Silva tried to score with a takedown but wound up in the same position on his back with the larger Pasternak on top. Silva had a couple of solid submission attempts but Pasternak stuck to his gameplan. In the third round, Pasternak willed his way to the end of the fight, grinding out the unanimous decision victory.

In a clash of fierce competitors, Ariel Sexton announced his return to the lightweight mix with an impressive submission victory over Anvar Alizhanov. Alizhanov dropped Sexton with a right hand in the opening moments but on the ground, Sexton quickly showed his grappling brilliance, locking in a body triangle and dazzling with an array of submission attempts. The end sequence came when Sexton transitioned beautifully into a reverse triangle from mount and forced Alizhanov to tap out from an armlock.

In the second Beijing Featherweight Tournament Semi-Final bout, Wang Ya Wei showcased a relentless fighting style, defeating opponent Li Gen by Technical Knockout. Wang went straight to work on Li, with a clear advantage in strength from the sound of the first bell. In half guard, Wang unleashed a barrage of strikes on Li which featured downward fists and elbows, causing referee Yuji Shimada to call a halt to the bout.

Li Kai Wen impressed with a first round knockout victory over He Nan Nan in the first Beijing Featherweight Tournament Semi-Final bout. He came out with a furious attack on Li, driving his opponent back up against the cage but after another tenacious exchange, Li connected with a left hook that dropped He. A few more downward strikes by Li coerced referee Olivier Coste to stop the contest.

In the second Beijing Flyweight Semi-Final bout of the evening, Wang Wei completely dominated Liu Xu with his grinding style, winning by unanimous decision. Wang drove successfully into a takedown from the get-go and kept Liu glued to the mat for the majority of the first round. From top position, Wang worked on Liu with sharp elbows and punishing forearms. The second round saw much of the same, with Wang completely controlling the fight on the ground to claim the victory.

Li Wei Bin and Hao Yi Jie kicked off the action for ONE FC: DYNASTY OF CHAMPIONS. In an exciting battle in the first Beijing Flyweight Tournament Semi-Final bout, Hao started off with a quick Guillotine Choke attempt but Li was able to reverse his fortune, gaining mount. From the top, Li worked into ground and pound, transitioning into an armbar that forced Hao to tap out in the first round.

BOXNATION ENDS 2014 WITH A BANG WITH KNOCKOUT ARTIST STEVENSON THIS FRIDAY BEFORE AN EXPLOSIVE NEW YEAR SCHEDULE

LONDON (Dec 19) – BoxNation will end 2014 with a bang this Friday night with knockout artist Adonis Stevenson’s battle with Dmitry Sukhotsky, before ushering in a blitzing start to the New Year.

‘The Channel of Champions’ is set to pick up where they left off with some mammoth fights in 2015 starting with the heavyweight world title fight between brash-talking American Deontay Wilder and WBC champion Bermane Stiverne on January 17th.

The charismatic Wilder is renowned for his hard-hitting power after dispatching of all 32 of his opponents and could potentially set up a blockbuster showdown with Tyson Fury in the future, who is also back in action on February 28th.

Manchester’s Fury has forced himself into a mandatory position to face Wladimir Klitschko for his WBO belt after his commanding victory over Dereck Chisora in his last outing.

February’s clash with a top 15 ranked contender will provide an appetizer before the heavyweight hitman tests himself against the world’s number one in Klitschko.

Also appearing on that card at London’s O2 Arena will be Chris Eubank Jr who will be looking to bounce back after his thrilling fight with middleweight star Billy Joe Saunders.

BoxNation will also screen what is set to be one of the greatest trilogies of the modern era when Mike Alvarado and Brandon Rios step into the ring once again following their previous duels.

The welterweight aces will step into the ring at the 1stBank Center in Colorado on January 24th as they look to conclude their feud once-and-for-all, with both men sharing a win apiece.

However, before BoxNation wraps up for Christmas the world’s leading boxing channel will show WBC light-heavyweight world champion Stevenson’s clash with tough Russian Sukhotsky.

A fight with another Russian though has been mooted with WBA, WBO and IBF champion Sergey Kovalev someone on Stevenson’s radar.

“The fight that is huge is Kovalev and me because the world needs this fight. They don’t just want to watch that in Quebec City they want to watch that all over the world,” said Stevenson.

“The world isn’t interested in seeing me with Lucian Bute or Jean Pascal – the world needs Adonis and Kovalev.”

The 37-year-old, who has knocked out 20 of his 25 opponents, has hit back at critics who have said he is afraid of the ruthless Kovalev.

“They don’t know nothing about boxing. I can say I want to fight or Kovalev can say he wants to fight but we have to deal with the TV networks, the managers, the promoters – that’s the problem. I know my manager Al Haymon is working on that but all these guys have to come together to fix that and make the fight happen,” said Stevenson.

The Haitian-born pugilist has to first get past his impending challenger first, someone he insists he is not overlooking.

“This was probably the best training camp that I’ve had. We’re ready for this fight. We’re not underestimating him. I know he’s coming to fight and I will be ready.

“I know he’s a tough contender. And I know he’s training very hard for this fight. He’s going to try to surprise me, but I’m very prepared because I know the contender is always going to try to take your belt,” said Stevenson.

“I’m going to win by knockout. Emmanuel (Steward) always told me that knockouts sell, so I’m going to win by knockout. It’s going to be a short night,” he said.

Nick Blackwell: “All I want for Christmas is a fight against Eubank Jr.”

LONDON (19 DEC) Avoided middleweight contender Nick Blackwell has promised to skip turkey and Christmas dinner altogether this year if a fight against Chris Eubank Jr can be made for 2015.

The Trowbridge man is currently mandatory challenger for Billy Joe Saunders’ British title, but expects the champion to vacate the belt in the coming weeks. This, he believes, will then pave the way for a clash against Eubank Jr in the new year.

“A British title fight with Eubank Jr is the fight I want more than any other,” said Blackwell. “He’s got the big name behind him – thanks to his father – and the public will want to see him in a good domestic fight again. They don’t want to see him go back to fighting journeymen.

“A potential fight with Eubank Jr fires me up so much. I probably won’t have any turkey for Christmas if I know that’s on the horizon.

“I’m a Channel 5 fighter and he’s someone who loves the attention of the masses. A fight between us two on Channel 5 would give him maximum exposure and would do big ratings. It’s a domestic blockbuster with a lot on the line.”

Eubank Jr’s unbeaten record was snapped last month by Saunders in a much-hyped domestic grudge match, and Blackwell, watching the fight from ringside, was well aware he’d meet one or both in the near future.

“Billy Joe won the first six rounds and then Eubank Jr nicked a few after that when he came on strong,” he said. “Most people in the boxing world knew that was going to happen. Billy Joe often starts quickly and tires towards the end, and Eubank Jr is a bit of a slow starter.

“Also, he’d never done twelve rounds before, so was obviously wary of pacing himself. That might have been why he didn’t do much during the first half of the fight.

“A fight between me and Eubank Jr would be totally different. Whereas his fight against Billy Joe was a bit of a chess match, I’d get involved with him a bit more and it would be more entertaining. There’d be a lot more action, a lot more shots thrown from both of us.

“It would’ve been nice to get Eubank Jr first and take his unbeaten record, but it’s not like Billy Joe completely dominated him or blasted him away. He beat him on a split-decision in a nip-and-tuck fight. That leaves room for me to properly beat Eubank next year.”

The reason for Blackwell’s confidence stems from his own recent form, which has been impressive, and his form in the gymnasium, most notably when sparring Eubank Jr in the past. It’s also the reason why he doesn’t expect the fight to happen anytime soon.

“He knows what happened when we last sparred,” said the 24-year-old. “I could just drop my hands, walk towards him and throw shots, and he’d try and hit me and there’d be nothing there. I was just too strong for him. He wanted to know why I was so strong at the end of the spar. He knows how it felt in there.

“It was quite a while back, so he’s probably now matured and got a bit stronger, but we still both know what happened. That’s why he’s hesitant and that’s why he hasn’t wanted to fight me before.

“He likes to go at his own pace, but if you make him work at your pace, he doesn’t throw a lot of shots. He kind of freezes. He looks really fit, and he obviously trains hard, but he doesn’t have gears and can’t change his pace.”

Ultimately, should Blackwell get the Christmas gift he craves, and should he contest the prestigious Lonsdale belt against Eubank Jr in 2015, he can see only one end result.

“I’d go in there and stop him,” he said. “I’d work his body and take his legs and fitness away. I’d start breaking him down from round one.

“When I sparred him, I was catching him with body shots and he didn’t like it one bit. He was dropping his hands and looking for a break. He was getting tired. He didn’t want to do the 30 seconds break in between rounds. He wanted to change it to a minute. Things like that stick with you. I know I would get to him.

“It would be a big statement to stop him. He’s a tough boy, he takes after his old man. If I could stop someone like that, it would make a big statement.”

SERGIO THOMPSON GETS HIS SECOND SHOT AT CHAMPIONSHIP GOLD ON SATURDAY, DECEMBER 20

LOS ANGELES (December 19, 2014) – The final Televisa and FOX Deportes event of 2014 will be one to remember, as Sergio “Yeyo” Thompson (30-3, 26 KOs) will attempt to win his first world championship on Saturday, December 20, when he faces Bryan Vasquez (33-1, 17 KOs) for the WBA interim junior lightweight at Arena Quequi in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo Mexico.

In the co-main event, Mexico City’s Judith “La Peligrosa” Rodriguez (7-7, 5 KOs) defends her WBC silver female junior bantamweight title for the first time against Guadalajara’s Salma “La Amazona” Canales (11-9, 4 KOs).

Also in action will be Silverio “Chamaco III” Ortiz (33-14, 15 KOs), Joseph “Diamante” Aguirre (8-0, 6 KOs) and Fidel Maldonado Jr. (19-2, 16 KOs).

Fighting out of San Jose, Costa Rica, 27-year-old Bryan Vasquez (33-1, 17 KOs) has twice held the interim WBA crown, first in 2011-12, and most recently in 2013, when he defeated Rene Gonzalez in October of that year. In April, Vasquez won his fourth straight defense, handing Jose Felix Jr. his first professional loss via unanimous decision. This Saturday, he will look to stop Thompson from reaching his dream of a world championship.

Chetumal’s Sergio “Yeyo” Thompson (30-3, 26 KOs) has been perilously close to a world championship for years, nearly taking the WBC 130-pound title from Takashi Miura in August of 2013 before losing a close decision. Winner of three straight bouts since then, the 31-year-old Thompson has fought his way back to the top, and now he’s fired up to face Vasquez with a world title on the line once more. (Dec. 18, 2014) — With one of the most potentially explosive, must-see heavyweight matchups in recent history less than a month away, hard-hitting WBC World Champion Bermane “B. Ware” Stiverne and undefeated heavyweight contender Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder participated in a media teleconference call Thursday to discuss their eagerly anticipated heavyweight world title fight on Saturday, Jan. 17 live on SHOWTIME® at 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. Stiverne-Wilder should be a gripping, intense encounter for as long as it lasts. Neither boxer is a fan of the other and, with a combined 54 knockouts in 58 fights, both heavy-handed heavyweights expect to triumph by knockout.

Since suffering his lone loss in July 2007, Stiverne (24-1-1, 21 KOs), training out of Las Vegas, Nev., has emerged as one of the world’s most feared and destructive heavyweights. In his last 13 starts, the first-ever Haiti-born boxer to own a heavyweight crown is 12-0-1, with 10 of the victories coming inside the distance. Of his 21 knockouts, 18 came inside three rounds, with 14 of his knockouts coming in the initial three minutes.

The 6-foot-7 Wilder (32-0, 32 KOs), of Tuscaloosa, Ala., hasn’t come close to putting in a full night’s work. He has gone four full rounds just one time since turning pro in November 2008, knocking out all of his opponents all within the four-round range. The 2008 U.S. Olympic bronze medalist and the last American male boxer to medal in The Olympics, Wilder has fought a total of just 58 rounds, an average of 1.8 rounds per outing. He’s registered 18 knockouts in the first round and eight in the second.

“JO JO” DAN RETURNS IN REMATCH AGAINST KEVIN BIZIER

New York, NY/Quebec City, Canada (12/18/14) – DiBella Entertainment’s (DBE) world-rated welterweight contender Ionut “Jo Jo” Dan Ion, 33-2 (18 KOs), IBF No. 2, will end 2014 participating in the most crucial bout of his career when he faces off against Canadian rival Kevin Bizier, 23-1 (16 KOs), IBF No. 5, in a highly anticipated rematch tomorrow night, at the Colisee de Quebec, in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. The 12-round welterweight contest, televised as the co-feature of a four-fight broadcast, live on SHOWTIME (9pm ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast), will determine the mandatory challenger and No. 1 contender for the IBF world title, currently held by England’s Kell Brook.

The Romanian-born Ion, living and training in Montreal since his 2004 pro debut, met then-undefeated Bizier, of Saint-Emile, last year on November 30, in a bout with the IBF No. 2 ranking at stake. The fight was a barnburner with the southpaw Ion dictating the pace and controlling the action during heated exchanges of which there were many, thrilling the crowd. Bizier persevered and remained competitive over the bout’s second half. After 12 exciting frames, the judges awarded a split decision to Ion, who picked up the NABA and IBF Inter-Continental welterweight titles with the victory.

“I thought I clearly won the first fight,” said Ion. “If I were to critique my performance, I may have allowed Bizier to have some success by electing to stand in front of him and trade during the middle rounds, though I felt that I did finish strong.”

Since then, each has kept busy in 2014, adding knockout victories to their records, Ion one and Bizier two. As the No. 2 contender, Ion was ready to vie for the mandatory position against the next available contender. Through a series of circumstances and unavailable contenders, that turned out to be Bizier. Now, the two will do battle once again, with Bizier looking for revenge and Ion determined to secure a much more decisive win and prove that he is the better man.

Rejuvenated Antonio Tarver Calls out David Haye

TAMPA (Dec. 18, 2014) – All five-time world champion Antonio “Magic Man” Tarver (31-6, 22 KOs) wants for Christmas is a signed contract to fight former two-division world champion David Haye (26-2, 24 KOs), ideally, during the first-quarter of 2015.

Tarver had been sending direct tweets for the past six months to Haye, who hasn’t fought in more than two years, without receiving a response. Coming off last week’s impressive seventh-round knockout of veteran Johnathan Banks (29-3-1, 19 KOs), Tarver has taken off the proverbial gloves and he is now publically calling out Haye, who insists, once again, that he is coming out of retirement.

“In a perfect world I will be fighting Haye early next year,” Tarver said. “He keeps insisting that he’s the second-biggest name in the heavyweight division I need him to be my set-up guy to beat in order for me to get a world title shot against Wladimir Klitschko. Haye has one-punch knockout ability and he’s aggressive. Once I beat him, though, I want Klitschko. I will come to England and knockout Haye, knock him out cold. I’m 46 and I don’t want to go through 12 guys like (Chris) Arreola, (Eddie) Chambers or (Steve) Cunningham to get Klitschko. He’s waiting for me to lose so he doesn’t have to fight me. I’m calling out Haye to get Klitschko. He talks a lot but the boxing world will see if Haye’s serious about fighting again. Tarver vs. Haye is a huge fight in London.

“I’m a star and I want to get paid. None of these cats know how to really promote a fight like Antonio Tarver. I’d prefer to fight Haye in Las Vegas but I’ll come to England to KO his ass! I have the most powerful adviser in boxing, Al Haymon, and I’ve told him I want Haye next. If Haye announces he’s coming out of retirement to fight somebody else, I’ll be at that press conference to embarrass him, the same way I had to get my (Roy) Jones (Jr.) fight. I’m a throw-back fighter who can make a pay-per-view bonanza fighting Klitschko and the way to get that fight is by knocking out Haye. I doubt he’ll fight me because he knows he can’t beat me. I want David Haye in the UK!

“No heavyweight can outbox me. They will have to knock me out to beat me and nobody’s ever done that. I will become the oldest world heavyweight champion in boxing history to cement my legacy. I’m coming for Klitschko after I KO Haye. I’m going to shoot a real-life Rocky movie with me chopping down Klitschko.”

Tarver also had some terse words for critics who complained during and after his recent fight that Banks was a weak opponent and their fight was a snoozer until the final round.

“I hit him with a quick 1-2 and then he wouldn’t stand in front of me because he felt my speed and power early,” Tarver explained. “He didn’t want to get hit with my counter-punches. I wish he had opened up and fought but he didn’t exchange blows. Boxing is the art of self-defense but I don’t see fighters today using their heads. Boxing is chess not checkers. I can box but, when I pick that lock like I did in the seventh round, I can knockout any heavyweight in the world. I don’t think I was hit with one good punch. My reflexes and timing, even at 46, are second to none.”

Tarver initially suffered a now-fully-healed fractured thumb to his left hand, closer to the wrist, postponing the original September 29th fight date versus Banks. Tarver remained in the gym and put in the proper time and effort to stop Banks.

“We created tough sparring sessions to prepare him for Banks,” Tarver’s head trainer Orlando Cuellar commented. “We knew Banks was dangerous and that he could crack. We just kept training and Antonio had to overcome a lot of physical obstacles during camp. He just kept going. He tried to do the impossible and did it. He showed a lot of movement, the ability to explode, and tremendous ring generalship. He sure didn’t look 46 the way he cracked Banks. And he’ll be 50-percent better in his next fight.

“Antonio showed his dedication to improve in the gym. We had a good game plan but he had to do everything he worked on in the fight. His timing was good and he won every round. Banks came out planning to jump on Antonio but he tasted his power in the first 30 seconds and he then didn’t want any part of it. He honestly exceeded what I expected and I didn’t realize how good a finisher he is.”

If Santa Claus delivers a contract for him to fight Haye, he may as well give Tarver another display case, as well, to store the world heavyweight title belt Antonio plans to capture in 2015.

50-year old Heavyweight Contender Bronco Billy Wright at the WBC Cares Event

LAS VEGAS (December 18, 2014) – Last night 50-year old WBC Heavyweight contender, “Bronco” Billy Wright (46-4, 37 KOs) was on hand at the WBC CARES event which took place at the Richard Steele Boxing gym in Las Vegas. Bronco Billy took photos and helped pass out presents to the kids in the boxing program.

Toronto – Fight Network, the world’s premier 24/7 television channel dedicated to complete coverage of combat sports, presents the final ONE Fighting Championship event of 2014, as ONE FC 24: Dynasty of Champions marks the organization’s debut in Beijing, China, headlined by a clash of top Chinese bantamweights with former Pan Pacific champion Ji Xian facing the undefeated Song Ya Dong.

He will face his biggest test to date in compatriot Ji Xian. Song is best known for his takedowns and will make good use of them against fellow grappler Ji Xian.

Adrian Pang is one of the top lightweights in the world. A veteran of 30 fights, Pang was previously a champion in another promotion and will now make his ONE FC debut with his sights set on capturing the prestigious ONE FC lightweight title.

In his first four bouts with the promotion, Vincent Latoel has established himself as one of the most exciting mixed martial artists on the ONE FC roster. Latoel began his career as a Dutch kickboxer but has developed an all-action style that has proven to excite audiences. Latoel will be a tough litmus test for Pang as both fighters look to prove they are ready to contend for the title.

He Nan Nan is a former bodybuilder who has become a well-rounded mixed martial artist. He is proficient in wrestling and boasts devastating knockout power in both his fists. Originally from Shanxi Province, he now fights out of Beijing.

Li Kai Wen is a freestyle wrestler who currently trains at Tianjin alongside other top Chinese mixed martial artists. He will face He Nan Nan in the Beijing Featherweight Tournament semi-finals. Li Kai Wen has already faced He Nan Nan once in a grappling bout and defeated him via submission. He Nan Nan is determined to claim victory in the mixed martial arts realm while Li is out to prove he is the better fighter.

Li Gen is a Sanda fighter from Beijing. He is also highly adept at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and his team has been crowned the best in Brazilian jiu-jitsu for the past two years. One of the top prospects to come out of the country, Li Gen wants to stake his claim as the best featherweight in the country by overcoming all competition.

Wang Ya Wei is a wrestler originally from Hubei province. Considered one of the top wrestlers in the country, he then moved to Thailand where he trained in Muay Thai for an extended period of time. He has since competed in regional competitions, winning his last bout by a nifty suplex and strikes sequence. Li Gen will face Wang Ya Wei in the semi-final bracket of the competition.

Ariel ‘Tarzan’ Sexton is a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu black belt with an impressive record of eight wins and three losses. He was born in Canada but now lives in Costa Rica. After discovering jiu-jitsu in 2001, he quit his day job and dedicated his life to mastering the art, before transitioning to mixed martial arts. His grappling acumen was on full display in his eight wins, six of which he finished with a variety of submission moves.

Willy Ni is the protege of striking specialist Melvin Manhoef. He started his career with fifteen wins in sixteen bouts. Ni is a submission specialist as well and he will look to bounce back with a win over Ariel Sexton.

Michal Pasternak is a Polish mixed martial artist with an unblemished professional record of ten wins and no losses. Pasternak embraces the diversity of the sport, and his balanced record of knockouts and submissions reflect that. Pasternak will have his hands full with the world-class talent in the light heavyweight division, populated with stars like Roger Gracie, James McSweeney and Jake Butler.

Rafael Silva is a Portuguese mixed martial arts veteran with more than 50 fights of experience. Silva has notched 21 victories via submission and will look to get a winning streak in ONE FC going with a win over Pasternak.

GARY RUSSELL JR. TO FACE CHRISTOPHER MARTIN IN NEW CO-FEATURE THIS SATURDAY, DEC. 20, ON SHOWTIME BOXING on SHOWTIME EXTREME®

NEW YORK (Dec. 17, 2014) – A 10-round featherweight fight between 2008 U.S. Olympian and former world title contender Gary Russell Jr. (24-1, 14 KOs), of Capitol Heights, Md., and former California State Champion Christopher Martin (28-4-3, 9 KOs) of Chula Vista, Calif., has been elevated to co-feature of this Saturday’s SHOWTIME BOXING on SHOWTIME EXTREME live telecast (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast, SHOWTIME EXTREME) from Little Creek Casino Resort in Shelton, Wash.

The Russell vs. Martin scarp is co-headlining the SHOWTIME EXTREME telecast in replacement of previously announced bout between Anthony Peterson and Yakabu Amido. Peterson will now box on the non-televised portion of the card against Mexican veteran Héctor Velázquez (56-24-3, 38 KOs).

In another change to the televised lineup, promising undefeated world-class prospect Julian “J Rock” Williams (17-0-1, 10 KOs), 24, of Philadelphia, will now be opposed by Jamar Freeman of Wilson, N.C. in a 10-round junior middleweight clash. Freeman (13-3-2, 7 KOs) is a late substitute for Mexico’s Edgar “Nene” Ortega, who withdrew due to an injury suffered in training.

The final SHOWTIME BOXING event of the year – and the fourth and final of back-to-back SHOWTIME telecasts on consecutive weekends – is presented by Goossen Promotions.

The talented, quick-fisted Russell will be making his first start since suffering his lone loss via hard-fought 12-round majority decision to former international amateur standout and two-time Olympic Games gold medalist (2008, 2012) Vasyl Lomachenko, of Ukraine, last June 21 on SHOWTIME. Russell came up short in the epic showdown for the WBO Featherweight World Championship by the scores of 114-114 and 116-112 twice.

Martin, 28, a winner of five of his last seven outings, is a clever boxer and excellent counter-puncher who is making his second start at featherweight. One of his most noteworthy victories came in August 2010 in the first of his two appearances on ShoBox: The New Generation when he recorded an upset 10-round decision over promising super bantamweight prospect Chris Avalos, who has appeared on ShoBox more than any other fighter.

In the 12-round main event, southpaw interim WBA Featherweight World Champion Jesus Andres “El Jinete” Cuellar (25-1, 19 KOs), of Buenos Aires, Argentina, will seek his ninth victory in a row when he defends against Ruben “Canelito” Tamayo (23-4-4, 15 KOs), of Ciudad Obregon, Mexico. DEC. 19 UNDERCARD PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES & PHOTOS FROM QUEBEC CITY

QUEBEC CITY (Dec. 17, 2014) – Jo Jo Dan, Kevin Bizier, Artur Beterbiev and Jeff Page Jr. held a final press conference at Houston’s Bar & Grill in Quebec City on Wednesday just two days before their bouts on the undercard of this Friday’s SHOWTIME BOXING: SPECIAL EDITION from Pepsi Coliseum.

Bizier (23-1, 16 KOs), of Quebec, will face the only man to defeat him, Canadian-based Romanian Dan (33-2, 18 KOs) in a 12-round IBF welterweight eliminator – the winner to face World Champion Kell Brook – in the co-feature of a four-fight telecast, live on SHOWTIME (9 p.. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

In the opening bout of the telecast, two-time Russian Olympian Beterbiev (6-0, 6 KOs), who twice beat WBO/WBA/IBF Champion Sergey Kovalev in the amateurs, will square off with fellow unbeaten Page (15-0, 10 KOs), of Andover, Kansas, in a 10-round light heavyweight scrap.

In the main event, WBC Light Heavyweight Champion Adonis “Superman” Stevenson (24-1, 20 KOs) will defend his title against Russian challenger Dmitry “The Hunter” Sukhotskiy (22-2, 16 KOs) in a 12-round bout. KEVIN BIZIER:
“It was the best training camp since I turned professional. I’m happy with where I am and I feel I did everything necessary to walk out of the ring with a victory.

“What killed us in the first fight was the holding from Jo Jo Dan. Every time I did something good he would hold me, and then he would respond with garbage punches that made him look good. Even if I landed the cleaner punches he would score with garbage punches after holding.

“The holding was a huge issue and we’re going to make sure the referee doesn’t allow it this time around.

“I’m ready for everything. I’m ready for a war. I’ve been ready since the last fight. Whatever he brings to the table, I will be one step ahead.

“I will win. I promise you. If the knockout comes, it comes.”

ARTUR BETERBIEV:
“I trained really hard. Everything was on schedule. We’re prepared and ready to fight.

“My main goal isn’t to knock him out, it’s to win the fight. If I do everything right then the fight will end in a knockout.

“I’ll do what I have to do to win over the U.S. fans. I know I’m not that well known in the U.S., but I’m going to show them my skills and give them my best. I’m a simple person but I’m going to open up and earn their respect.

“I’d like to fight for a world championship and become a world champion in 2015.”

“Training camp went great. We trained up in the higher altitude of Big Bear [Calif.] with Abel Sanchez, bringing in fighters from all over the world. I’m in the best shape of my life. We’re very confident for this fight.

ANTHONY PETERSON VS. YAKUBU AMIDU CALLED OFF BY PETERSON CAMP

SHELTON, WASHINGTON — December 17, 2014 — Yakubu Amidu (21-5-2, 19KO) was fight-ready for this Saturday’s SHOWTIME BOXING bout versus Anthony Peterson (34-1, 22KO). He completed a brief but rigorous training camp, and completed the required medical exams. SHOWTIME BOXING announced the fight in a Decmeber 4th press release, and on their telecast this past weekend. It came as a surprise when Amidu promoter Bobby Hitz of Hitz Boxing received a call this morning that the bout is off.

Hitz was advised that Peterson trainer Barry Hunter did not want his boxer to fight Amidu. Said Hitz, “Hunter has been trying to get out of this fight since we signed the bout contract. The kid trained hard for this fight. It’s the holidays. This kid did everything asked of him, and now he’s not going to be paid because at the last minute, this guy pulls out because he is afraid of what Amidu might do to his fighter? He’s like the Grinch that stole this guy’s Christmas. Most guys fight for an opportunity to showcase their talents on SHOWTIME, and here’s a guy that went out of his way not to be on TV. He took an easier fight, and lost the TV opportunity just so he didn’t have to fight us. I’m glad I don’t have these guys guiding my fighters’ careers.”

According to boxrec.com, Amidu appears to have been replaced with Hector Velazquez (56-24-3, 38KO). “I know Tom [Brown] did what he could to put this bout together,” said Hitz. “He fought vigorously to keep Amidu in the fight, despite Hunter’s objections from the beginning. There’s no reason Amidu shouldn’t be fighting on SHOWTIME this weekend.”

Montreal Bell Centre to Host Kovalev vs. Pascal

Boucherville, Wednesday December 17th 2014 – Main-Events and InterBox announced that the Montréal Bell Centre will host the March 14th 2015 boxing Gala that will feature the reigning unified WBO, IBF and WBA Light Heavyweight World Champion, Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (26-0-1, 23 KOs) vs. former WBC, IBO and The Ring Light Heavyweight Champion, Jean Pascal (29-2-1, 17 KOs). Tickets to this megafight, which will also be broadcast on HBO World Championship Boxing throughout the United States, go on sale Saturday, December 20th 2014 as of 10 AM. A press conference is scheduled to take place early next week.

Three of the 4 major titles on the line
Kathy Duva, CEO of Main-Events, received the exception from the IBF that she and Sergey requested. Therefore, the IBF title will be on the line on March 14th when Kovalev faces Pascal. Mandatory IBF contender Najib Mohammedi is happy with the outcome because it will give him more time to work with his new trainer. Mohammedi will appear on the undercard of Kovalev-Pascal. Therefore, three of the four major world title belts will be on the line: The IBF and WBO World Light Heavyweight titles, as well as the WBA Super Light Heavyweight belt.

Kovalev back in North America
The unified WBO/IBF/WBA Light Heavyweight champion is back from a small vacation in Russia and spending quality time with his wife and infant son, who was born right in the middle of his last training camp. After a short rest, Sergey is now ready to start training for his fight vs. Jean Pascal. Kovalev is anxious to defend his WBO title for the fifth time, as well as the IBF and WBA titles he wrestled from Bernard Hopkins (55-7-2, 32 K.-O.) in a wide unanimous decision win last November 8th.

Pascal’s sole objective: To become World Champ again
Following the unfortunate turn of events during his December 6th fight, Jean Pascal is hungrier than ever to attain his ultimate objective of becoming world champion again. Marc Ramsey, who accompanied David Lemieux to Brooklyn last December 6th for his bout vs. Gabriel Rosado will be back in Pascal’s corner for the March 14th bout. Boxing’s Fastest Rising Superstar, Gennady “GGG” Golovkin, 31-0-0 with 28 KO’s, scored his 18th straight stoppage and 12th defense of his WBA/IBO titles on Saturday, October 18th with a devastating second round knockout of WBC “Interim” Middleweight Champion, Marco Antonio Rubio in front of a standing room only crowd of 9,323 at the StubHub! A native of Karaganda, Kazakhstan, now residing in Stuttgart, Germany, Golovkin has fought twice previously in Monte-Carlo. KHAN CONDEMNS PESHAWAR ATTACKS

Boxer Amir Khan has expressed his condemnation and sadness following the recent attacks in Peshawar which claimed the lives of 148 people, including 132 children.

The deplorable attacks have been strongly condemned throughout the world and Khan, who comes from a British-Pakistani background, is the latest voice to express his sadness.

Amir Khan, said: “What has taken place in Peshawar is absolutely horrific and sickening. After recently becoming a father myself I can’t really imagine how the families of these innocent children are feeling. My deepest condolences go out to all the families affected and I wish to express my full support for Pakistan and the people of Pakistan.”
