OLEKSANDR USYK LOOKS AHEAD TO HUGE 2015 AFTER KNOCKOUT OF VENTER

Kiev, Ukraine (December 16, 2014) With a resounding ninth round knockout victory on Saturday night in Kiev, Ukraine, fast rising cruiserweight prospect OLEKSANDR USYK capped off a brilliant year improving his perfect record to 6-0 with six stoppages.

Fighting in front of a massive crowd at the Sport Palace which included former Heavyweight World Champion and promoter VITALI KLITSCHKO, the 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist battered South African veteran DANIE VENTER over the first eight stanzas before a barrage of punches called a halt to the fight at the 2:29 mark of the round.

The win earned Usyk the World Boxing Organization’s Inter-Continental Cruiserweight belt.

“This has been a sensational year for Oleksandr. Inside the ring he’s truly performed as a future world champion and clearly he’s the most popular fighter in Eastern Europe,” said ALEXANDER KRASSYUK of K2 Promotions Ukraine. “In the coming year we’re looking to see him continue to improve and serve notice that he’s the next ruler of the cruiserweight division.”

Said Usyk, “Venter was a tough guy, a little awkward but I’m glad to get the hard working rounds in. It was a terrific way to end the year and I’m very thankful for the immense support from the fans in the Ukraine and all over Europe.”

“I’ll take a short break now but I can’t wait to see what the New Year brings.”

GENNADY “GGG” GOLOVKIN OPENS TRAINING CAMP FOR WORLD TITLE DEFENSE

Gennady Golovkin
Big Bear Lake, CA (December 16, 2014) Following a world wind International Press Tour with stops in Monte Carlo, Astana, London and Mexico City, WBA/IBO and WBC ‘Interim’ Middleweight World Champion GENNADY “GGG” GOLOVKIN has opened training camp in Big Bear Lake, California for his upcoming world title defense against two-time world title challenger MARTIN MURRAY, the WBC’s #1 ranked middleweight.

Under the watchful eye of longtime trainer ABEL SANCHEZ, Golovkin is slated to defend his titles on Saturday, February 21st at the Salle des Etoiles in Monte Carlo.

“It was a very busy time these last few weeks but I liked spending time with the media and fans all over the world,” said Golovkin on Monday, speaking from the World Boxing Council Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. “I look forward to starting training camp with my coach and putting on another great show in Monte Carlo.”

Stated TOM LOEFFLER of K2 Promotions, “The response Gennady has received all over the world these last few weeks has been extraordinary. From both media and fans it’s clear that he’s the fastest rising international star in boxing.”

“Gennady is also anxious to start training and looks forward to the biggest test of his career facing Martin Murray who is rated at the top of the middleweight division.”

The Five-City International Press Tour for Golovkin will culminate in Los Angeles with details of a January press conference to be announced shortly.

Boxing’s Fastest Rising Superstar, Gennady “GGG” Golovkin, 31-0-0 with 28 KO’s, scored his 18th straight stoppage and 12th defense of his WBA/IBO titles on Saturday, October 18th with a devastating second round knockout of WBC “Interim” Middleweight Champion, Marco Antonio Rubio in front of a standing room only crowd of 9,323 at the StubHub! Center in Carson, California, USA. The attendance was record setting, far surpassing any other previous boxing events held at the acclaimed West Coast venue including those featuring Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Andre Ward.

A native of Karaganda, Kazakhstan, now residing in Stuttgart, Germany, Golovkin has fought twice previously in Monte Carlo. In March 2012, Golovkin knocked out former world champion Nobuhiro Ishida in the third stanza, which earned him numerous “Knockout of the Year” awards from the international boxing media and scored a sixth round stoppage of former world title challenger Osumanu Adama in February 2013, also taking place at the Salle des Etoiles.

On October 25, Martin Murray stopped Dominic Spada in the fifth round also at the Salle des Etoiles in Monte Carlo. Golovkin was ringside for the Murray/Spada bout and came away impressed by his performance. With the victory, Murray of Merseyside, United Kingdom improved his record to 29-1-1 (13KO’s).

In April 2012, Murray traveled to Buenos Aries, Argentina and battled hometown world champion Sergio Martinez. Despite dropping Martinez in the eighth round, he lost a controversial decision in a bout many in the media and ringside observers believe he was victorious in.

Three fights earlier, Murray headed to Mannheim, Germany in December 2011 to challenge also hometown champion Felix Sturm. Outlanding Sturm throughout the fight with blistering power punches, most ringside observers and media members also thought he won this fight despite settling for a highly controversial split decision draw.

GOLOVKIN vs. MURRAY is presented by Golden Gloves of South Africa, K2 Promotions, GGG Promotions, Expo 2017 and Tsesnabank, Casino de Monte Carlo along with Monte Carlo SBM.

ADONIS STEVENSON vs. DMITRY SUKHOTSKIY FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Adonis Stevenson
QUEBEC CITY (Dec. 16, 2014) – WBC Light Heavyweight Champion Adonis “Superman” Stevenson and Russian challenger Dmitry “The Hunter” Sukhotskiy held a main event final press conference on Tuesday in Quebec City, Canada, as they prepare for their showdown on SHOWTIME BOXING: SPECIAL EDITION this Friday, Dec. 19.

Stevenson (24-1, 20 KOs) and Sukhotskiy (22-2, 16 KOs) will square off in the 12-round main event of a SHOWTIME quadrupleheader that begins live at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast) from Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec.

Joining the main event fighters at Tuesday’s press conference was super middleweight contender Andre “The Matrix” Dirrell (23-1, 16 KOs), who will face Derek “The Black Lion” Edwards (27-3-1, 14 KOs) in a 12-round IBF super middleweight elimination bout.

Here’s what the participants had to say on Tuesday:

ADONIS STEVENSON:
“This was probably the best training camp that I’ve had. We’re ready for this fight. We’re not underestimating him. I know he’s coming to fight and I will be ready.

“I know he’s a tough contender. And I know he’s training very hard for this fight. He’s going to try to surprise me, but I’m very prepared because I know the contender is always going to try to take your belt.

“I’m going to win by knockout. Emmanuel (Steward) always told me that knockouts sell, so I’m going to win by knockout. It’s going to be a short night on SHOWTIME.

“My plan is to face (Sergey) Kovalev in 2015. But first we need to focus and win this fight. Then we can talk 2015.”

DMITRY SUKHOTSKIY:
“He looked nervous at the podium, like he wasn’t ready to fight. But I am ready to fight.

“I’m not going to say that he is underestimating me because I’ll show that in the ring. I came here to win; I came here to bring the world title back to Russia.

“He has flaws and it is our job to find them and find a way to win the fight.

“It’s always different when you fight a southpaw, but we prepared for it. We prepared for everything that can happen in the ring.

“I’m ready to fight. I’m here to make a statement. This isn’t my first time fighting for a world title. Only this time, I will win.”

ANDRE DIRRELL:
“I’m here to do a job and it will get done.

“It’s good to be back. This is my third fight in six months, and before that I fought three times in the past four years. I’m on a very busy schedule right now and it feels good.

“I’m just looking forward to the fight. It will put me in a high ranking in the IBF and bring me this much closer to challenging for that title pretty soon.

“I want that rematch with Carl Froch. He’s the IBF Champion and a win on Friday will bring me closer to fighting him again and proving that I beat him the first time.

“I’m excited to be here. It’s cold but it’s beautiful in Canada. I just can’t wait for the action to start.”

SUGAR HILL, Stevenson Trainer:
“This was the best training camp we’ve had. It was a fun training camp, and when you have a fun camp you learn a lot, you’re relaxed and you get better results.

“His attitude has been great. He’s happy and he’s ready to fight.

“Dmitry is a very sound fundamental fighter. He uses his jab very well and he likes to punch and get knockouts. His nickname is ‘The Hunter; so we’re expecting him to come forward. He’s not going to be bouncing around and moving and making it a boring fight.

“Adonis is a come-forward kind of boxer, but he can also move backwards and counterpunch. It’s going to be a strategic fight up until a certain point. As Adonis always says, ‘I’m going to wait for you to make a mistake and I’m going to catch you.’

“I’m looking forward to Dmitry making a mistake and Adonis capitalizing and catching him.

“I always see Adonis’ fights ending in knockouts. He’s such a tremendous puncher, he can move well, and he’s still learning. His boxing IQ is off the charts. He can think so fast in the ring. He can remember something from the first round in the ninth round and come back and capitalize on that.

“The original training was supposed to be in Detroit at the New Kronk Gym that was opened by my cousin, Sylvia Steward, Emmanuel’s daughter. The gym is open, but it’s just not ready. Some of the equipment was not ready in time so we continued the camp in Brampton, Canada.”

WBC – Dec. 15, 2014 – Convention Opens

The opening ceremonies of the 52nd annual World Boxing Council convention were held this morning in the Mirage Event Center at the The Mirage in Las Vegas, which has hosted numerous legendary fights.

The masters of ceremony were Jimmy Lennon Jr. and WBC legal counselors Robert Lenhardt and Alberto Leon.

A truly incredible gathering of world champions, past and present, was also on hand.

In his opening comments, Lennon said, “We welcome you to the beautiful Mirage in Las Vegas for the opening ceremony of the 52nd annual World Boxing Council convention. This grand and historic WBC convention is taking place in the fight capital of the world, Las Vegas, and in the spectacular setting of The Mirage, home of so many memorable battles, from Douglas versus Holyfield, Leonard-Duran III, Azumah Nelson-Jeff Fenech, and where Grand Campeon Mexicano – Julio Cesar Chavez – defended his title four times.

“This week, in hosting the 52nd annual WBC convention, The Mirage adds to its place in boxing importance. This year proves to be an historic convention with over 100 world champions and legends in attendance. There are more than 1400 delegates here. Guinness World Records will be presented to Don José Sulaiman, Julio Cesar Chavez, Bernard Hopkins, and Floyd Mayweather, as well as to the WBC for sending its belt into space to the International Space Station.

“Additionally, of course, regular business of the convention will take place throughout the week. And a special note – we have a tremendous program planned for you tonight at our gala dinner. A tremendous program is planned, as well, this morning. There are many items to cover, so we’re going to get right into it.”

Former WBC two-time welterweight, middleweight, super middleweight, and light heavyweight world champion and 1997 International Boxing Hall of Fame inductee Sugar Ray Leonard addressed the assembly and said, “I don’t quite know how to articulate the feeling of being on here, joining some of the legendary fighters, champions, the current-day boxers and champions, and future world champions. It is indeed a pleasure of mine to be here, also having the opportunity to remember a great man, a great individual in José Sulaimán. José meant a lot to me, as he meant to so many boxers, because he really, really cared about his boxers. They were like his extended family.

“The WBC has implemented a number of ways to minimize injuries for boxers, such as the reduction of rounds from 15 to 12, and studies have shown that signs of human endurance. The thumbless gloves are reducing eye injuries. In fact, I was one of the victims of that. There are so many things that happened for the betterment of boxing because of the WBC, and because of José Sulaimán.

“That great belt, that championship belt – without question, that is one of my most prized possessions. I cherished it from day one.

“Mauricio, I want to say to you that I know that your dad is watching and is listening to us. And we will continue his vision. Thank you so much. God bless you all.”

In his opening speech, WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán said, “It is very, very, very exciting and very important and very emotional for me to see all the friendly faces, the very dear persons who are with us here this morning.

“Today, we are closing the chapter with a memorial for my father. We are putting an end to a life which was dedicated exclusively for boxing. I would like to thank my mother for being 55 years next to my father, for always allowing him to go out and dedicate his life for boxing, taking care of the kids and the grandkids, because she is the best mother in the world.

“Also, I would like to thank every single person in this room. You have been very warm, very kind, and very caring for my mom, my brothers, my wife, my sisters, and the grandkids.

“It has been a very lonesome year at some times, but it has been a very special time when we see each other, when we talk to you, when you call us, when you send us a message. We have felt like what the WBC family is really about.

“Your closeness to the Sulaimáns has been instrumental for us to continue. I would like to express very special feelings for two persons – I call them ‘my second fathers’ – and they have been very important in my life: my second father, my ‘papa,’ Don King, and my second father, Mr. Akihiko Honda. Thank you for all you have done for me.

“I would like to thank my wife, Cristiane, who is here. She has been holding my hand, she has been extremely supportive. It has been a difficult year, and she has taken care of my kids. I miss them so much. There is no way I could be here, standing, feeling so proud of having a wife like you.

“When I grew up, I was always looking at my father traveling, my father working late nights when he was in Mexico. I felt, in a way, very jealous because we had to share our father with so many persons. These were each single boxers. If he was a four-round amateur fighter or Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, or any of those sitting here, they are like brothers and sisters to the Sulaimáns.

“So for me to see so many great champions, each one of you know what my father felt for you, and thank you for giving him so many moments of glory, and thank you for being so loyal to the WBC, because this is your home. Thank you so much to all the fighters.

“My father had the opportunity to feel very special moments in Nevada. I would like to thank, in a very special way, Cisco. [note: Nevada State Athletic Commission Chairman Francisco Aguilar] Because my father, after many years of not coming regularly to this state, this great venue of Nevada, Las Vegas, he found in you, Cisco, and your commission, a feeling of feeling at home. When my father passed away, he passed away as he started in boxing – loving Las Vegas and Nevada.

“To the WBC Board of Governors, to all the committee chairmen, to all of those who participate in the day-to-day activities of the WBC, all I can say is thank you so very much for all you do.

“We are just taking the banner, we are following the footsteps, because you all share the same principles, the same integrity, in always looking out for our fighters. We’ll continue to do so as the WBC because we care about the boxers, the men and women who step up into the ring, giving everything to make their family and their country proud.

“So today, we are finishing with a celebration of the life of José Sulaimán, and we are starting with a celebration of the so many world champions who are here at this convention.

“We are going to have lots of fun, and I hope that everybody enjoys this convention as much as we expect.

“We are going to finish this morning’s session with a few very special awards. I’m going to begin with the first award, which is the ‘Man of the Year Award.’ Every year, the WBC Board of Governors votes to elect these very special person who made the difference and represented boxing to its fullest. Richard Sturm, who is here, also Pope Francis, Carlos Slim, Nelson Mandela, and many others have received this honor.

“I would like to welcome Mr. Andrey Ryabinsky, who is the Man of the Year for 2014. Andrey is from Russia. He’s a very quiet, low-key person who has been helping a boxer who had an unfortunate accident in the ring, Magomed Abdusalamov. He had to go through several surgeries, and Andrey is taking care of Magomed through all the rehab, and his family, his wife and his kids. Thank you so much.

“Of course, we also honor the Woman of the Year. We have a very special person who has a leader. She has a network called Women Network. It is a world-wide organization. She’s a leader, she’s searching to have unity, and it is my real pleasure to present the Woman of the Year Award to Michelle Patterson.

“The Lifetime Achievement the highest recognition that a boxing commissioner can accomplish. It is my extreme privilege and honor to present the Lifetime Achievement Award to one of the greatest commissioners in the history of boxing, Mr. Ken Morita of Japan.

“So tonight, we have our banquet. We have the awards for the champions. As you can see, we have all the WBC Generation 6 belts, which will be awarded to the two greatest fighters of each division and the current champion. We expect to have at least 100 champions in the room.

“I would like to thank everybody, every champion, all the members of the media and the press, every boxing commissioner, every family member.

“Thank you so very much. Welcome to the WBC 52nd annual convention.

“Let’s celebrate the lives of our great champions – the WBC green and gold.”

A video tribute to the life of José Sulaimán was presented, produced by Tom Sarkis.

Also addressing the convention delegates were North American Boxing Federation President Duane Ford, WBC Convention Chairman Chuck Williams, former WBC super bantamweight and featherweight world champion Jeff Fenech, Dr. Gerald Finerman, and Richard Sturm. Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval welcomed the convention in a video presentation.

Carlos Martinez of the Guinness World Records said, “It is a great honor for us to be here. Guinness World Records and the WBC have developed together a special relationship over the last years. Through them, Guinness World Records have been able to award some of the most important world records to boxers and people related with this lovely sport.

“We would like to start our ceremony of Guinness World Records awarding certificates with a very special one. Since 1963, the WBC has been trying to reach and go beyond the limits with the world of boxing. There’s no better way for a sports organization to represent itself. The green belt of the world champions of boxing through the WBC is the main representation of a global achievement in this sport.

“Now, the WBC has managed to take this belt beyond any known limits and orders. From July through November this year, the WBC belt went to space and reached an unheard-of, unprecedented 433 kilometers high. That’s 270 miles altitude. It is a great honor that we start this awarding ceremony with a Guinness World Records certificate for the highest altitude ever reached by sports trophy in the world. Congratulations.”

WBC Lifetime President José Sulaimán received a certificate for the longest tenure as the president of a global sports organization – 38 years and 41 days. Julio Cesar Chavez was awarded a certificate one for the highest paid attendance at a fight for his 1993 WBC super lightweight title defense against Greg Haugen – 132,274.

Francisco Santana returns against Sebastian Lujan Jan 9 on ESPN Friday Night Fights

SANTA BARBARA (December 15, 2014) – Gary Shaw Productions’ super-welterweight contender, Francisco Santana (21-3-1, 10 KOs), returns to the ring against Sebastian Lujan (43-8-2, 26 KOs) on January 9, 2015 at the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, California. The 10-round bout will serve as the co-feature to the Darleys Perez (31-1, 20 KOs) vs. Jonathan Maicelo (21-1, 12 KOs). Both fights will air live on ESPN2’s “Friday Night Fights”.

Earlier this year, Santana impressed the boxing world when he defeated former undefeated contender Eddie Gomez (17-1, 10 KOs) by way of unanimous decision. Francisco is currently riding a winning streak which spans 9-fights in a row. In his last bout he defeated Luis Alfredo Lugo by way of fifth round knockout. He’ll look to continue on his winning streak against a tough Lujan whose only been stopped twice in his career.

“I’m very excited that my promoter Gary Shaw has brought me back to ESPN.” said Santana. “I know Lujan is a very crafty veteran and I’m not looking past him. These are the type of fights that I have to win if I want to accomplish my goal of becoming a world champion. The Chumash is in my backyard and I want to put on a great show for all my hometown fans that will be there to support me. 2015 is going to be a big year for me.”

“Santana has proven to me that he really wants to take his career to the next level.” Gary Shaw said. “He done everything we’ve asked him to do and now I’m going to push really hard to get him into a big fight. He looked incredible against Eddie Gomez, who was undefeated at the time. That win showed me a lot. Lujan is no pushover so I want him to get though this fight before we start talking about anything else. There is no doubt that this fight will be a crowd pleaser because Santana brings an action style to the ring.”

The ESPN “Friday Night Fights” telecast begins Friday January 9, 2015 at 9:00 p.m. EST / 6:00 p.m. PST from the Chumash Resort Casino in Santa Ynez, Calif. Bellator MMA President Scott Coker announced the new fights on ESPN’s “MMA Live.”

Featuring a thrilling middleweight matchup between two of the most dangerous strikers in all of mixed martial arts with knockout artist Melvin “No Mercy” Manhoef (29-12-1) facing former Bellator MMA middleweight champ Alexander “Storm” Shlemenko (50-9), “Bellator: Manhoef vs. Shlemenko” takes place Feb. 13 at Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif.

Tickets for “Bellator: Manhoef vs. Shlemenko” are currently on sale and can be purchased at The Save Mart Center box office, Ticketmaster.com or Bellator.com.

The evening’s main card, including Curran vs. Weichel and Budd vs. Nogueira, airs on Spike TV.

“I get more and more excited every time I discuss this card,” said Bellator MMA President Scott Coker. “With Curran and Weichel, you know you’re going to get a championship-caliber fight, and I’m looking forward to seeing another former Strikeforce fighter in Julia Budd test herself against a very dangerous Talita Nogueira.”

The 27-year-old Curran is a 13-time Bellator MMA veteran and two-time Bellator MMA Featherweight World Champion. In March, Curran scored a submission win over then-champion Daniel Straus to claim the belt before losing it in September to Patricio Freire by decision following a five-round battle. Now he looks to get back on track for another shot at the belt.

Curran now meets Germany’s Weichel, who at just 30 years old already boasts more than 40 professional bouts. Earlier this year, Weichel earned a Bellator MMA tournament win by racking up victories over Desmond Green, Matt Bessette and Scott Cleve, bringing his record to 11-1 in his past 12 outings. With 34 career wins to his name, an incredible 21 of his victories have come by submission.

A Muay Thai specialist, Canada’s Budd opened her MMA career by competing four times under the Strikeforce banner. She then transitioned to the all-women’s Invicta FC promotion, where she racked up a four-fight winning streak that includes two victories by TKO and another by submission.

Meanwhile, Nogueira’s strengths lie in grappling, as she boasts not only a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt but also a pair of grappling world titles. She turned to MMA in 2009 and is undefeated through her first six professional contests, including four wins by submission.

More bouts for “Bellator: Manhoef vs. Shlemenko” are expected to be announced shortly.

“Bellator Manhoef vs. Shlemenko”: Friday, Feb. 13, Save Mart Center, Fresno, Calif.

Bellator Middleweight Main Event: Melvin Manhoef (29-12-1) vs. Alexander Shlemenko (50-9)

Skoglund defeats Johnson, Nielsen brothers back with wins

Erik Skoglund (22-0, 11 KOs) took another step towards a world title challenge with a unanimous points victory over Jamaican veteran Glen Johnson (54-20-2, 37 KOs) on Saturday night at the Albertslund MusikTeatret in Copenhagen.

The rising Swedish star proved too much for the former IBF World Light Heavyweight Champion, and after ten rounds of action the judges scored the fight 98-92, 97-93 and 97-93.

‘I was pleased with my performance,’’ said Skoglund. ‘It might sound cocky to say, but I felt I was the better boxer on the night. I was one step ahead of him in everything I did. I’ve proved I’m ready for a world level opposition. I want to challenge for a world title in 2015!’’

Said promoter Nisse Sauerland: ‘’This was another fantastic performance by Erik. It was a great fight, in which Glen more than played his part. We now look to the future, and for Erik that is a shot at one of the division’s champions next year.’’

Danish middleweight Patrick Nielsen (23-1, 11 KOs) returned to winning ways in front of his home fans in the Copenhagen suburb. Nielsen outpointed Polish contender Lukasz Wawrzyczek (20-4-2, 3 KOs) to claim his twenty-third professional victory.

‘’This fight was all about rebuilding,’’ said Nielsen. ‘’Mentally, it’s been difficult to get back on track following my loss in Moscow, but I did it and I’m very happy to get the win.

‘’Wawrzyczek was a tricky opponent. It was hard to get close to him, so I didn’t get the knockout that I was looking for. But the important thing is I’m back, and back with a victory. 2014 was not the best year for me, but 2015 will definitely be my year.’’

Said promoter Nisse Sauerland: ‘’There was a lot of pressure on Patrick tonight. Not only was he coming back from a loss, he was fighting in his hometown. He did what he needed to do. He got the win against a tough opponent. We can move on from here and start looking at bigger fights next year.’’

Younger brother Micki Nielsen (16-0, 12 KOs) put in a career best performance to dominate former world title challenger Gusmyr Perdomo (21-5, 14 KOs). After ten entertaining rounds the judges scored the fight 100-90, 100-90 and 99-91 in favour of the Danish cruiserweight.

‘’I would have like to have knocked him out, but it wasn’t to be,’’ said Nielsen. ‘’Perdomo is an experienced fighter. He knew what he had to do to survive. We had a plan to push forward and break him down, and the plan worked. It was the biggest fight of my career and this was a very good win for me.’’

Said promoter Nisse Sauerland: ‘’Micki showed a real maturity in his performance tonight. He proved he is more than just a knock out artist. He outboxed Perdomo from the first bell to the last. At 21 years old, he has only just started to show his true potential, He is an extremely talented boxer with a very bright future ahead of him.’’

Julian Erosa KO’s Harrison Bevens to become first Super Fight League America Lightweight Champ

Tacoma, WA (December 14, 2014) Super Fight League America returned to the Pacific Northwest Saturday night, and the results were nothing short of spectacular. The evening saw an explosive fight card mix perfectly with a raucous crowd on hand at the Emerald Queen Casino. With two title fights, a stacked undercard and a healthy dose of controversy, those either in attendance or watching the international broadcast on YouTube were treated to quite the show.

The main event of the evening saw two up-and-coming local stars compete for the SFL America Lightweight strap as Yakima native Julian “Juicy J” Erosa knocked out Tacoma’s Harrison Bevens in the 2nd round. The action was lightning-quick from the opening bell, with Erosa pushing the pace. Round number two saw “Juicy J” land a huge left hand and follow it up with a knee to the face before the referee was forced to make the save.

After the fight, CageSport 145lb. Champion Drew Brokenshire entered the cage and announced that he would happily give Erosa a shot at his title in the near future. The fans in attendance shouted their approval at this potential second act, a follow up to their December 2012 contest that saw Brokenshire win via unanimous decision.

Saturday night’s co-main event was an absolute showstopper, as undefeated Enumclaw native and former U.S. Marine, Tyson Cunningham fought Seattle’s Ben Fodor, who is perhaps better known as the Seattle Superhero Phoenix Jones in a 5-round contest for the SFLA Welterweight Championship. Cunningham’s wrestling background was on full display as he landed takedowns seemingly at will, with Fodor landing huge punches and elbows from his back. Although he spent most of the fight trying to get back to his feet, Fodor gave far more significant damage than he received. His striking was explosive, landing massive shots to his opponent’s head and body. After Fodor had a point deducted for a head kick to a downed opponent, it looked all but assured that Cunningham would be leaving Tacoma with the belt. However, Fodor answered back with a fantastic performance in the championship rounds to make the judges decision even more difficult. After all was said and done, the fight ended in a split-draw, one of the more uncommon decisions in Mixed Martial Arts. Although a chorus of boo’s rang out from the audience upon hearing the decision, both fighters showed remarkable class during the post fight interviews. With neither man taking home the belt, a rematch could very well be headed our way.

Two incredible title fights capped off a fantastic night of MMA action that saw seven exciting undercard bouts. Those results are as follows:

Jason Novelli (5-0) def. Jason Gray (2-1) via 1st RD Darce Choke
Taki Uluilakepa (2-1-1) vs. Albert Tadevosyan (3-0-1) ends in a draw
Trent Tyler (3-5) def. Mike Devose (1-2) via 1st RD Guillotine Choke
Jenny Liou (2-0) def. Susy Watson (0-1) via Unanimous Decision
Woo Johnson (3-1) def. Josh LaGrange (1-6) via 1st RD verbal submission due to punches
Thomas Hoeper (1-1) def. Nate Cook (0-3) via Unanimous Decision
Sean Gee (1-0) def. Alex Eastman (0-5) via 2nd RD TKO

Next on schedule for Brian Halquist Productions is Battle at the Boat 99 on Friday, January 9th. SFL America is brought to you by CageSport MMA and Brian Halquist Productions. More information can be found at www.halquistproductions.com and www.superfightleague.com

Bermane Stiverne To Defend WBC Heavyweight World Title Against Deontay Wilder, Jan. 17 on SHOWTIME

stiverne
LAS VEGAS (Dec. 13, 2014)—The most significant heavyweight matchup in the United States in a decade was formally announced on Saturday night. Hard-hitting WBC Heavyweight World Champion Bermane Stiverne (24-1-1, 21 KOs), of Las Vegas, is set to defend his title against unbeaten knockout specialist and mandatory challenger Deontay Wilder (32-0, 32 KOs), of Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Saturday, Jan. 17. The potentially explosive bout between the two big-punching heavyweights will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and be televised live on SHOWTIME® (10 p.m. ET/7p.m. PT).

The event is co-promoted by Don King Productions and Golden Boy Promotions and will feature undefeated IBF Bantamweight World Champion Leo Santa Cruz (28-0-1, 16 KOs) defending his belt against a challenger to be announced.

Ticket information for the event will be announced shortly.

SHOWTIME Sports® will offer the latest installment of the award-winning original documentary series ALL ACCESS the week prior to the heavyweight showdown on Friday, Jan. 9 at 10:45 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME.

Stiverne vs. Wilder is set up to be a gripping, intense encounter for as long as it lasts. Neither boxer is a fan of the other and, with a combined 54 knockouts in 58 fights, both men expect to win by knockout.

“Don’t blink on Jan. 17. I am the heavyweight champion of the world and nobody is going to beat me,” Stiverne said. “I’m excited and I’m looking forward to making a statement. Talk is cheap. I do my talking in the ring.”

“I’m expecting a short night because we have bad blood,” Wilder said. “I really want to hurt this guy, and I haven’t felt this way in a long time. I want to show him this is no joke, this is real. This is business. This is the hurt game and my power is real. I told him that I’ll whoop his ass and I’m going to keep my promise.”

If triumphant, Wilder will become the first United States-born heavyweight champion since Shannon Briggs, who captured the WBO title in November 2006 and lost the crown in his first defense.

“Now I can make all my dreams come true, I can make it a reality,” Wilder said. “America is yearning for a heavyweight world champion. We haven’t had a real one since the days of Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield. Everyone just sits back and remembers the glory days. America has been waiting for their champion and I’ve arrived.”

“This will be a momentous day in heavyweight boxing history,” said legendary heavyweight promoter Don King. “Just more than 40 years removed from the Rumble in The Jungle with Muhammed Ali and George Foreman, the heavyweights, WBC world champion Bermane Stiverne and Deontay Wilder, will “Return to Glory” live at MGM Grand on SHOWTIME. The little guys in boxing are great but it’s the heavyweights that have always excited fans the most. Bermane, he’s a knockout artist just like Mike Tyson. Wilder, he talks trash but is a good fighter, too. This is a must-see fight. The heavyweights are back and ready to “Return To Glory.’”

“Fight fans across the United States have been clamoring for an American heavyweight champion for nearly a decade — and Deontay Wilder may well answer their wishes on January 17,” said Oscar De La Hoya, Founder and President of Golden Boy Promotions. “Stiverne brings power and experience. Wilder brings power and youth. This is set up to be an explosive fight that I can’t wait to see.”

Stiverne, the first-ever Haiti-born boxer to own any portion of a heavyweight crown, will be making his first defense of the WBC title he won with a convincing sixth-round technical knockout over Chris Arreola in his last fight on May 10, 2014. It was Stiverne’s second consecutive impressive victory over Arreola and earned him the WBC belt vacated in December 2013 when Vitali Klitschko retired. Stiverne was a 5:1 underdog going into their first fight on April 27, 2013. Stiverne won that fight via clear 12-round unanimous decision.

Since suffering his lone loss in July 2007, the supremely talented 6-foot-2 Stiverne, 36, has emerged as one of the world’s most feared and destructive heavyweights. He is 12-0-1 in his last 13 starts, 10 of the victories coming inside the distance. Of his 21 knockouts, 18 came inside three rounds, 14 of them in the initial three minutes.

“I’m all business,” Stiverne said. “The only time he’s going to get my attention is the night of the fight. I promise you, he will get more than he bargained for and more than he’s expecting.”

The 6-foot-7 Wilder, 29, hasn’t come close to putting in a full night’s work. He has gone four full rounds just one time since turning pro in November 2008. The virtually untested slugger has fought a total of 58 rounds, an average of 1.8 rounds per outing. He’s registered 18 knockouts in the first round, eight in the second.

“I can’t help that I always knock my guys out,” Wilder said. “It’s not my fault I make it look easy. When I knock Stiverne out I don’t want to hear any whispers; I don’t want to hear people say that he was a bum. I want the world to bow down and praise the heavyweight champion of the world. They have to finally admit that I’m just that good.”

In his bout before last in March, in what was expected to be his most demanding assignment, Wilder blasted Malik Scott in 96 seconds. Wilder is coming off a fourth-round technical knockout over Jason Gavern in August 2013. Wilder dropped Gavern twice, once in the third and once in the fourth. The referee halted the one-sided proceedings at the end of the fourth round.

A 2008 U.S. Olympic bronze medalist and the last American male boxer to medal in The Olympics, Wilder will once again enter a boxing ring while carrying the weight of U.S. boxing fans on his shoulders.

“We have a fight between two huge punchers,” said boxing historian and SHOWTIME expert analyst Steve Farhood. “There’s going to be a lot of drama because you’ll want to see who lands first. Who lands first may end the fight. It’s that kind of matchup.

“Stiverne is a big puncher and more proven than Wilder, having fought Chris Arreola twice. He’s an exciting heavyweight because of his power, and he’s proven to be the type of fighter that will take two to give one.’’

Oquendo Files Lawsuit in Federal Court in Manhattan Over July WBA Title Fight Against Chagaev

Fres Oquendo has filed a lawsuit in Federal Court in Manhattan against Hamburg-based promoter Terek Box Event seeking damages of $5 million and an injunction to prevent the promoter from promoting Ruslan Chagaev in any bouts until it first gives Oquendo the rematch he was promised. On July 6, 2014 in Grozny Chechnya, Oquendo fought Chagaev for the vacant WBA regular World Heavyweight Title that became vacant after Wladimir Klitschko defeated Alexander Povetkin in October 2013. Chagaev, the home town favorite and adopted son of President Kadyrov, was awarded a majority decision with one judge ruling the fight a draw and the other two judges finding for Chagaev by only one round.

“I am really looking forward to my day in court and finally getting justice,” said Oquendo. “These guys pulled a really slick move and tricked me into fighting on July 6 by promising me to increase my purse to $1 million and giving me a rematch at a time when I wasn’t mentally right, with my wife and newborn baby being sick and in the hospital. Well, now they are the ones behind the eight ball. They’ve got until January 2 to respond to the lawsuit.”

Oquendo also is in the process of appealing a December 3, 2014 WBA resolution which suspended Oquendo until December 6, 2014 for allegedly having tested positive for a women’s breast cancer drug by the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA). Oquendo claims that he has proof that RUSADA violated the World Anti-Doping Code (WADA) because RUSADA leaked his results to a person not affiliated with the promotion and that this leak proves that the representatives and agents at RUSADA conducting the testing violated the testing protocols and cannot be trusted. He also claims that as soon as they found out about the leak, he got tested in the U.S. by the same lab that does the testing for the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) and that the results were negative. Oquendo also claims that he insisted on being tested by the Swiss Anti-Doping Agency for his fight in Chechnya but that he was forced to take the RUSADA test against his will and was forcibly driven back to the Arena to be tested. Additionally, Oquendo is appealing the WBA’s denial of his protest regarding President Kadyrov being permitted to climb up onto the ring apron between rounds to coach and encourage Chagaev in clear violation of the WBA rules.

The fight was originally scheduled for June 7th but the promoter was not prepared and rescheduled the fight to July 6th in breach of its agreement with Oquendo. Given the new date, Oquendo warned the promoters that his wife was due to have their child the week of the fight and asked for the date to be pushed back another week or two. The promoter claimed that Ramadan would not allow that, an excuse that Team Oquendo later learned was a ruse. Oquendo arranged to have his wife artificially induced so the child could be born before he left for the fight; however, due to complications, his wife and child had to be hospitalized and he was not mentally capable to doing the fight. “That week I received over 200 phone calls, emails etc., a lot of them alluding to threats on Fres’ life, my life and our families if we didn’t go” claims Tom Tsatas Oquendo’s advisor. “I have reported this to the FBI and I have sent them the emails.”

“They promised us everything to get us over there, but in the end gave us nothing,” continued Tsatas. “Once we got there, everything changed. We were not allowed to leave the hotel grounds and we were only able to eat at one place inside the hotel. One member from our team was told in the elevator that if Fres knocked out Chagaev, none of us would leave the country. After the fight we took Fres to the hospital for a brain scan and then he, our promoter and trainer were essentially kidnapped and forced by men carrying automatic weapons to go back to the arena and forced to submit to the RUSADA drug test. And when we were leaving the next day, at the airport, our passports mysteriously went “missing” for over an hour while the promoter, complete with a firearm clearly visible on him, took us to a dimly lit back room and tried to renegotiate Fres’ $1 million purse by offering us a suitcase full of $200,000 in cash. Ultimately, to get out of the country, I actually had to sneak onto the plane using someone else’s boarding pass.”

Salita and Star of David Promotions Congratulates Lorick and Honig for Ring 8 Honors

Brooklyn, NY (December 12, 2014)–
Star of David Promotions is proud to applaud our friends Nirmal Lorick and Dave “Scooter” Honig on winning Trainer of the Year and Conditioning Coach of the Year as voted by Ring 8, the venerable veteran’s boxer organization.

Lorick and Honig will received their hard-earned honors on Sunday, Dec. 14, during Ring 8’s annual year end gala.

Star of David head Dmitriy Salita is not shy in praising both men, who he has come to revere as leaders on the local boxing scene, and role models as people, period.

“I met Nirmal when I joined Starrett City Boxing Club in 1995,” recalled Salita, now making his mark as a promoter. “He has helped me from the beginning and trained me for many of my fights as a pro. We shared many incredible times together!”

Lorick was one of the first students under the late, great Jimmy O’Pharrow, who opened up Starrett City in 1978, Salita recalls. As for Honig, known to most all as “Scooter,” Salita met him in 2000, before he won the NY Golden Gloves.

“‘Scooter is one of the best conditioning trainers in the world,” said Salita, who holds a 35-2-1record as a professional, and is contemplating another return to the ring in the first half of 2015. “He’s trained many world champs and top contenders, and was one of the first people I knew to introduce the sound nutritional concepts which are now used by so many athletes.”

Salita notes that he is so proud to see Jimmy’s grandson Qwani O’Pharrow running Starrett City, in East New York, which is again home to so many successful and promising professional and amateur pugilists in the NYC area.

Aside from teaching the fine art of the sweet science, Salita said that both men are able to teach life skills which are so useful to the young people who come to the gym, to learn the craft of fighting, and leave with a newfound understanding of how to succeed in life.

“It’s an honor for me to call both Scooter and Nirmal close friends,” Salita said, “and our friendship goes outside the boxing gym. They are both very different but great people that know their job extremely well. Congratulations to both on a job well done and I think this is just one step in a great and illustrious journey of two incredible trainers that are a credit to the sport of boxing, and society as a whole.”

ANDY LEE OPEN TO BILLY JOE SAUNDERS BLOCKBUSTER IF HE COMES THROUGH WORLD TITLE CHALLENGE LIVE ON BOXNATION

LONDON (Dec 12) – Irish world-title hopeful Andy Lee is open to setting up a blockbuster battle with rising British middleweight star Billy Joe Saunders should he prevail this weekend.

The 30-year-old southpaw takes on Matt Korobov for the vacant WBO belt at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, live and exclusive on BoxNation, and is aware that if he wins he must fight undefeated Saunders – who won the WBO eliminator contest against Chris Eubank Jr last month – next up.

“Yeah, that’s a fight I would like,” said Lee. “That fight has been ordered by the WBO for the winner of this, but it’s not a reality until I win the fight on Saturday – but once I win the fight if it’s Billy Joe, it’s Billy Joe. It doesn’t matter.”

Saunders looked impressive in his recent win over Chris Eubank Jr, overcoming the exciting ace when he scored a split points victory to continue his march towards a world title shot.

That performance impressed Lee, who dreams of facing-off with the 25-year-old Saunders in front of his adoring Irish fans.

“That’s my dream, to win a world title and then defend it in Ireland, in Limerick or Dublin, Dublin would be more likely. That’s one of my ambitions, to become champion and defend it in Ireland,” said Lee.

“Experience was key [in the Saunders-Eubank Jr fight]. Billy Joe knew what to do, he’d been there before and he kind of shut him down for the first six rounds.

“Then it was always going to be uphill for Eubank. To give away the first six rounds was almost suicide really,” he said.

Before he can look too far ahead Lee has the impending task of beating the undefeated and decorated amateur Korobov. In his previous world title bid at light-middleweight he came up short as he was stopped in the seventh round against the bigger Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Now though, the pupil of the late Emmanuel Steward has linked up with trainer Adam Booth and believes that this time around his hunt to become a world champion will end successfully.

“Adam Booth had always been a trainer who’d stood out for me so I got a meeting organised. He’s turned me into a far more 3D fighter whereas previously I would only box long. Adam has also helped change me physically; transformed me into a better conditioned and more athletic fighter,” said Lee.

“But going through such an experience builds strength of character and makes you a better man in the long term. Matt Korobov is far more of a technical fighter than Chavez. I’m anticipating a boxing match, as opposed to a slug out.

“Obviously he achieved great things in the amateur game but he’s never been anywhere near this level during his six years as a pro. He’s not fought opposition anywhere close to the standard that I’ve been facing and beating. I intend to expose that on Saturday night,” he said.

The headline attraction on the big BoxNation bill on Saturday night will be Tim Bradley against Argentine Diego Chaves.

Welterweight star Bradley is looking to bounce back following his first loss but will have his work cut out against the hard-hitting Chaves who is also aiming to gain some momentum following his disqualification to Brandon Rios.

Plus further good news for BoxNation subscribers comes with the news that the channel is set air the epic trilogy between Rios and Mike Alvarado on January 24th.

The clash is one of this era’s most intense and exciting boxing rivalries and their previous two scraps have been among the most thrilling in recent times.

“This is going to be like our wars in fight number one and fight number two. We are two warriors. We will go into the middle of the ring and mix it up. For me, all of this is for one thing – redemption,” said Alvarado.

“If Alvarado wants to go the centre of the ring and trade, he will feel my power right away,” responded Rios. “A few of my big punches and he will change his game plan. That’s when I hunt him down, win the fight.”

TODAY! Alvarado-Rios 3 Tix Go On Sale at 10 AM MT

Mike Alvarado
DENVER (December 12, 2014) — Nothing says “Seasons Beatings” like tickets to see former world champions and co-stars of one this era’s most intense and exciting boxing rivalries — Denver’s “Mile High” MIKE ALVARADO vs. BRANDON “Bam Bam” RIOS of Oxnard, Calif. — duke it out in the final chapter of their epic trilogy.

Boasting a combined record of 66-5-1 (45 KOs) — a winning percentage of 92% and a victory by knockout ratio of 68% — each warrior owns a victory in the series — both of which were candidates for Fight of the Year in 2012 and 2013. Alvarado-Rios 3 is scheduled for 12 rounds with the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) International welterweight championship on the line. It will take place Saturday, January 24, at the 1STBANK Center, located in the Denver suburb of Broomfield, CO. The fight will be televised live on HBO, beginning at 9:45 p.m. ET/PT. The last boxing event hosted by 1STBANK Center was sold out in advance — the October 19, 2013 WBO junior welterweight world championship between Alvarado and Ruslan Provodnikov.

Promoted by Top Rank®, in association with Tecate, tickets to the Alvarado-Rios welterweight championship event will go on sale just in time for the holiday gift giving season — Today! December 12, at 10:00 a.m. MT. Priced at $250, $200, $125, $65 and $40, tickets will be available at www.AltitudeTickets.com or by phone at 866-461-6556. Tickets may also be purchased at the Pepsi Center box office, beginning on Saturday, December 13.

“This is going to be like our wars in fight no. 1 and fight no. 2. We are two warriors. We will go into the middle of the ring and mix it up. For me, all of this is for one thing — redemption,” said Alvarado.

“If Alvarado wants to go the center of the ring and trade, he will feel my power right away,” responded Rios. “A few of my big punches and he will change his game plan. That’s when I hunt him down, win the fight.”

“This is a rematch made in heaven,” said Todd duBoef, president of Top Rank. “Their first two fights were barn burners and arguably Fights of the Year. Alvarado and Rios know what is at stake. Fans can expect to see a finale that will rival, if not surpass, the legendary Morales-Barrera and Pacquiao-Marquez wars.”

“In 2015, we begin with a trilogy’s conclusion. In the course of two years and 3,003 punches exchanged between them, Mike Alvarado and Brandon Rios traded triumphs,” said Peter Nelson, vice president, programming, HBO Sports. “Now, in their third fight, both seek to author their saga’s definitive chapter. Styles make fighters, but fights themselves are made from heart, and fans recognize that these men have two of the biggest hearts in boxing. On January 24, Alvarado-Rios 3 promises to be a must-see event.”

Alvarado (34-3, 23 KOs) of Denver, had won 10 of his last 14 bouts by stoppage en route to his rematch victory over Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios, on March 30, 2013, which not only avenged Alvarado’s loss to Rios in 2012’s Fight of the Year, but also made Alvarado a world champion. Alvarado had lost to Rios on October 13, 2012, via a seventh-round technical knockout in one of the most action-packed fights of the millennium. Going into round seven, two of the three judges’ scorecards had it 57-57. In the sequel, which was as action-packed as the first fight, Alvarado made subtle adjustments to eke out a narrow but unanimous decision and win the WBO junior welterweight world title. Notable Alvarado knockout victims have included Breidis Prescott, Ray Narh, Emmanuel Clottey and Cesar Bazan. In 2012 Alvarado fought in two Fights of the Year-nominated fights. On April 14, 2012, Alvarado went toe-to-toe for 10 brutal and exciting rounds winning a unanimous decision over Mauricio Herrera (18-1, 7 KOs). Herrera entered that fight world-rated No. 7 and riding a two-year, five-bout winning streak, highlighted by victories over future world champion Ruslan Provodnikov (17-0) and Mike Dallas, Jr. (17-1-1). That was followed by his first fight with Rios in October. Alvarado’s world title reign ended in his first defense, on October 19, 2013, where he suffered a12th-round TKO to Provodnikov in front of a sold-out crowd at the 1STBANK Center in his Denver homecoming. Rios returns to the ring after losing a unanimous decision, in his most recent fight, to Mexican icon and four-division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez last May 17.

Rios (32-2-1, 22 KOs), the former WBA lightweight champion, from Oxnard, Calif., is on the hunt for his second world title in as many weight divisions. Thirteen of his last 17 victories have come by way of knockout. One of boxing’s most exciting fighters, Rios is known for his all-action fan-friendly fighting style. His trainer, former International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior lightweight champion and 2012 Trainer of the Year Robert Garcia, calls it a “throwback” style with a warrior’s mentality that screams excitement. Highlight knockout victories on Rios’ resume include Miguel Acosta, Anthony Peterson, Urbano Antillon, John Murray and Mike Alvarado. Alvarado, the natural 140-pounder, entered that fight as the undefeated WBO No. 1 junior welterweight contender. Many consider it 2012’s Fight of the Year. In their exciting rematch, which took place on March 30, 2013, Rios lost a close decision for the vacant WBO interim junior welterweight title. It was considered a finalist for the 2013 Fight of the Year award. After losing a unanimous decision to Fighter of the Decade Manny Pacquiao, on November 24, 2013, which headlined a pay-per-view event that emanated from Macau, China, Rios returned to the winner’s circle in his last fight, on August 2, winning a gritty, foul-filled battle against former interim world welterweight champion Diego Chaves, via a ninth-round disqualification..

FORMER CHAMPION JOHN RIEL CASIMERO FACES ARMANDO SANTOS IN FLYWEIGHT TITLE ELIMINATOR ON FOX DEPORTES AND TELEVISA, DEC. 13 – 10PM ET / 7PM PT

LOS ANGELES (Dec. 12) – A world title shot will be on the line at the Salon Las Palmas in Monterrey, Mexico, on Saturday, December 13, when Mexico City’s Armando “Cobra” Santos (14-3-1, 8 KOs) faces Filipino star John Riel “Cuadro Alas”Casimero (20-2, 12 KOs) in a 12-round IBF Flyweight Title Eliminator that will air on FOX Deportes and Televisa.

In the co-main event, unbeaten Francisco “El Bandido” Vargas (20-0-1, 14 KOs) battles Guasave, Sinaloa, Mexico’s Genaro “Duro” Camargo (39-15, 32 KOs) in an eight-round lightweight bout.

Also in action will be lightweight contender Roberto “Tito” Manzanarez (28-1, 24 KOs) and unbeaten prospect Adan “Speedy” Mares (12-0-1, 3 KOs).

Santos vs. Casimero, a 12-round IBF flyweight title elimination bout, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Canelo Promotions and sponsored by Mexico – Live It To Believe It!. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. CT and the FOX Deportes broadcast begins at 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT and the Televisa broadcast airs at 10:30 p.m. CT on Canal 5.

Unbeaten in seven straight since 2011, 26-year-old Armando “Cobra” Santos (14-3-1, 8 KOs) lives up to his nickname with a style that can see him strike opponents down at any given time once the bell rings. A holder of the NABF, WBC USNBC, and IBF International titles at 112 pounds, the number four-ranked Santos has even bigger goals in mind for 2015, and if he defeats Casimero, he will move even closer to them.

Fighting out of Cebu City, 24-year-old John Riel Casimero (20-2, 12 KOs) is on a mission to regain the title he lost on the scales in May. The IBF flyweight champion since February of 2012, when he defeated Luis Alberto Lazarte, Casimero successfully defended his crown three times before he came in overweight for his bout against Mauricio Fuentes. After stopping Fuentes in a single round, Casimero now has a second chance to earn a shot at the belt he never lost in the ring.

Born in Tijuana and now fighting out of Mexico City, 2008 Olympian Francisco Vargas (20-0-1, 14 KOs) has had the biggest year of his career in 2014, and after notable wins over Abner Cotto and former world champion Juan Manuel Lopez, he has the opportunity to close out the year with another big win as he faces the always tough Camargo.

Just 27 years old, Guasave’s Genaro “Duro” Camargo (39-15, 32 KOs) is one of the most active fighters in the sport today, and he’s always ready to test himself against the best in the game. Winner of four of his last six bouts, this 10-year veteran can make a huge impact in his final bout of 2014 if he can defeat Vargas this weekend.

At 19, Roberto “Tito” Manzanarez (28-1, 24 KOs) has been blazing a trail through the lightweight division, winning seven straight fights and earning the WBC Youth Intercontinental title that he has successfully defended three times. Born in Phoenix, Arizona and now fighting out of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico; he is fresh from a third-round stoppage of Ricardo Castillo in August, Manzanarez will seek his fourth victory of the year on Saturday against Tijuana’s Hector Velasquez (56-23-3, 38 KOs), a hard-hitting 39-year-old who always shows up to fight.

The brother of multiple-division world champion Abner Mares, Guadalajara’s Adan “Speedy” Mares (12-0-1, 3 KOs) is a well-schooled boxer looking to take his game to the next level in 2015. But first, the 25-year-old must get past Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico’s Miguel Angel Gonzalez (16-1, 13 KOs), a tough test who will push the rising star to the limit in Monterrey.

Hughie Fury gambles in Monte Carlo – set to fight Rudenko on February 21st

LONDON (12 DEC) Hennessy Sports and Golden Gloves are pleased to announce that heavyweight prospect Hughie Lewis Fury will take a huge step-up in class on February 21st in Monte Carlo, when he battles Ukrainian Andriy Rudenko over ten rounds on Channel 5.

Hughie, cousin of Tyson, has been sidelined since May, due to illness, and is eager to get active again in 2015. Now fit and well, Fury, 14-0 (8 KOs), begins the year with a major assignment overseas.

The 31-year-old Rudenko was born in Dnipropetrovsk and is 24-1 (16 KOs) as a professional. Known as a heavy-handed knockout artist, he has stopped 12 of his last 14 opponents and finished the majority of them within four rounds.

In his last bout, however, Rudenko suffered the sole loss of his professional career in a WBA Inter-continental heavyweight title fight against unbeaten Australian Lucas Browne. The fight went the distance and Rudenko navigated his way through twelve rounds for the first time in his career, but a close decision went the way of Browne.

Rudenko now faces his second unbeaten heavyweight in a row and the 20-year-old Fury, keen to make up for lost time, will look to become the first man to stop the hard-punching Ukrainian.

“This is a big step-up in class for Hughie and we are delighted to be able to secure such a quality fight for the masses watching on Channel 5,” said promoter Mick Hennessy.

“We strongly believe Hughie is one of the world’s best heavyweight prospects and he will prove this in 2015, starting with a statement win against Rudenko in Monte Carlo.

“After that, we will gradually increase the level of competition and be on the hunt for major titles. Give it a year or two and Hughie will be joining Tyson Fury in taking over the world heavyweight division.”

Peter Fury, Hughie’s trainer and father, added: “This fight is by no means a certainty. Hughie needs the respect of everyone for taking such a fight after coming off a long illness.

“Unlike many other heavyweights, Hughie will learn his trade properly by taking genuine fights from now on, and we look forward to seeing how he deals with a high-level opponent on February 21st. Hughie relishes the challenge.”

Fury’s fight with Rudenko is added to the ‘Thunderbolt in Monaco’ show headlined by the WBA Super world middleweight title fight between champion Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin and British challenger Martin Murray.

Also on the undercard is the vacant European bantamweight title fight between Bristol’s Lee Haskins and Frenchman Omar Lamiri, as well as the WBA and IBO world minimumweight title clash between South African Hekkie Budler and Mexican Jesus Silvestre. Channel 5 will televise the event on Saturday, February 21.

“Johnny Tapia’s life story was an incredible journey, and we are eager to celebrate his biggest accomplishments and chronicle the toughest and most difficult moments of his turbulent life,” says Rick Bernstein, executive producer, HBO Sports. “Tapia was so much more than just a world champion, and we want to share this gripping account with our subscribers, many of whom may have seen Johnny in his five fights on HBO, but may not know the amazing story behind the fighter.”

“This is not a boxing film, but a film about tragedy, triumph, demons and redemption,” says DiBella. “Johnny gives us an honest assessment of his strengths and frailties; he reminds us of the power and resiliency of the human spirit.”

“Johnny’s is a story that needed to be told,” says Jackson. “Everyone can relate to some aspect of it, which makes it that much more powerful. Personally, his journey is one that has touched me greatly.”

Born Feb. 13, 1967, Johnny Tapia used boxing as way out of his impoverished life in Albuquerque, NM, becoming a five-time world champion in three different weight classes. Tormented as an adult by the brutal kidnapping and murder of his mother, which occurred when he was eight years old, Tapia suffered repeated episodes of drug addiction and mental illness. His nickname, Mi Vida Loca (“My Crazy Life”), reflected not only Tapia’s intensity in the ring, but also a tumultuous personal life, which involved jail time and several drug overdoses. In 1994, he married his wife, Teresa, who helped Tapia regain control of his life in retirement before he succumbed to a heart attack in 2012.

HBO has a rich and distinguished history of developing and presenting boxing documentaries, among them: “Legendary Nights: The Tale of Gatti-Ward”; “Klitschko”; the Emmy®-winning “Assault in the Ring”; the Peabody Award-winning “Thrilla in Manila”; “Joe Louis: America’s Hero…Betrayed”; the Peabody Award-winning “Ali-Frazier: One Nation Divisible”; and the Emmy®-winning “Sugar Ray Robinson: The Bright Lights and Dark Shadows of a Champion.”

TAPIA is a G Unit Film and Television and BK Blu Productions Presentation in association with Live Star Entertainment; executive producers, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and Lou DiBella; directed by Eddie Alcazar. For HBO: executive producer, Rick Bernstein; director, Bentley Weiner. Liev Schreiber narrates.

Lewkowicz Congratulates Escandon, Promises Cave Another Shot

Promoter Sampson Lewkowicz sends his congratulations to his fighter, Colombia’s Oscar Escandon (24-1, 14 KOs), who captured the interim WBA super bantamweight title with a 12-round split decision over Canada’s Tyson Cave (22-3, 6 KOs), Thursday night at the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, California.

But because of the controversy over the scoring (117-111, 115-113 Escandon against 115-113 Cave), Lewkowicz also has a strong assurance for Canada’s Tyson Cave, whom he also promotes.

“I wish to congratulate Oscar Escandon for his victory first of all,” said Lewkowicz. “I am very happy for him winning his first world championship. However, I think there is enough question about the decision that I want Tyson Cave to know something: If the WBA doesn’t order an immediate rematch of this fight, I am personally making a promise to him that I will get him another big opportunity. He will be back, no matter what.”

To most, it appeared Cave had soundly outboxed Escandon throughout their fight, but two of the judges saw a different fight and awarded 30-year-old Escandon the verdict. And so, Lewkowicz says he must wait to see what will play out between the sanctioning body and the two fighters.

“I will see what the WBA does before I make the next move with either fighter,” continued Lewkowicz. “And then either they will fight again to prove one clear winner or one will go after (WBA Champ) Scott Quigg and I will find the other another big fight.”
