“ROYAL BATTLE: AMIR KHAN VS. DEVON ALEXANDER” FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Amir Khan post
LAS VEGAS (Dec. 11, 2014) – The Media Center at MGM Grand in Las Vegas was buzzing today as some of boxing’s brightest stars took to the stage and addressed the media ahead of their respective bouts on the “Royal Battle: Amir Khan vs. Devon Alexander” fight card taking place this Saturday, Dec. 13 live on SHOWTIME from the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Here is what the fighters had to say at today’s press conference.

AMIR KHAN, Former Unified Super Lightweight World Champion

“This is a great fight and a great fight card overall from top to bottom. It’s almost like pay-per-view. But it’s a great opportunity for my fans to see me fight.

“From me, you can expect to see a lot of explosiveness and movement. I don’t understand why Devon is saying he’s fought better than me when we’ve fought most of the same guys.

“I’ve fought a lot of top guys, too. It sounds to me like Alexander is trying to give himself confidence; saying things to pick himself up.

“I feel like a different fighter at 147 pounds. I feel stronger. I’m happier making weight.

“I am not taking this fight lightly. I am not looking past it one bit. Devon Alexander is tough and I am going to stay focused.”

DEVON ALEXANDER, Former Two-Division World Champion

“I am ready to go 15 rounds if we had to. This is a tough test and I’m ready.

“I’ve dreamt of this my whole life. Headlining in Las Vegas is a dream come true and I plan on taking full advantage of this.

“I’m as prepared mentally and physically as I’ve ever been for a fight. If you look at my resume, I’ve fought top guys throughout my career. Khan is a good fighter and this is going to be a great fight.

“I’m going to stand and fight. This isn’t going to be a track meet. At least not for me.

“I know I’ve got a lot of fans back home pulling for me and I’ve got some fans in the UK too that will be rooting for me on Saturday night too.”

KEITH THURMAN, WBA Interim Welterweight World Champion

“I know a little about my opponent; he just beat an unbeaten 28-year-old and he was a 2000 Olympian. Bundu is active in the ring and likes to get into a rhythm. He’s not a huge puncher but he places them right where they can do damage. He’s making his U.S. debut.

“I plan to provide him with a traditional ‘One-Time’ welcome to America. I plan to come out and box smart and take it from there. My shoulder is fine and I’m excited about getting back in the ring.

“I’m not looking past Bundu, but I’m looking through him to 2015 when I expect to start fighting Top-5 fighters on a consistent basis.’’

LEONARD BUNDU, Undefeated Welterweight Contender

“I’m excited to be here. I am here to gain some respect. I am 40-years-old, but I feel much younger. I know it is a hard test for me on Saturday, but I am going to give it my all.

“I am Italian and like fine wine, I get better with age.”

ABNER MARES, Former Three-Time, Three-Division World Champion

“I’m willing to fight anybody. There are some great possibilities for me: Leo Santa Cruz, Jhonny Gonzalez, Lomachenko. If these fights can be made, I want them.

“Expect the old Abner Mares on Saturday. The hunger is back, the passion has returned. I’m back with my original team.

“I’ve won three world titles in three divisions but I don’t call myself a former three-division champion. I think of myself now as a future four-division world champion.”

JOSE RAMIREZ, Top Featherweight Contender

“This Saturday, I will be facing a tough fighter in Abner Mares. This Saturday is going to be a war between two Mexicans and I am here to be victorious.”

JERMALL CHARLO, Undefeated Junior Middleweight

“I am happy to be on this show. Lenny says he is seasoned and I am ready to serve you all some Italian sausage.

“Me and my twin brother have been through a lot of adversity. Getting world title shots and not being able to compete in them, but we overcome it and we are ready to put on good shows on Saturday night.

LENNY BOTTAI, Junior Middleweight Contender

“What do I expect from the fight? I expect a great battle. I expect it to be a stepping stone to make my name in the U.S.

“I hear that I keep getting called a seasoned fighter. I come from Italy where the cheese is the best seasoned cheese in the world, so I am going to show what seasoned fighters can do.”

JERMELL CHARLO, Top Junior Middleweight Prospect

“Unfortunately I didn’t get the chance to fight for the world title. I moved past that. I am staying focused and in control of what’s going to take place on Saturday.

“I am going to continue to grow, continue to stay smart and stay focused.”

ERROL SPENCE JR., Top Junior Middleweight Prospect

“It is going to be another great performance. Hopefully by next year I will be fighting one of these guys in front of me and fighting for a world title.”

VICTOR ORTIZ, Former Welterweight World Champion

“Once again we are starting over. This was a very tough camp, but we are here. I am sharing this podium with some great fighters. I am at the back [of the dais] today, but you better believe I will be in the front with the fans someday soon.”

OSCAR DE LA HOYA, Founder and President of Golden Boy Promotions

“Saturday night is going to be one of those nights where every fight is action-packed and entertaining.

“This card is stacked. It is going to be a special treat for all of the fans that watch it live at MGM Grand or live on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING.

“It is a token of appreciation to all of the fans and saying thank you. Thank you for supporting this wonderful sport of boxing.

“Both of the main event fighters understand that they are facing greatness in each other and it is going to be a tough fight. A tough fight for both guys, but that is what they love.”

Price added to Abraham-Smith II undercard

Heavyweight sensation David Price (18-2, 15 KOs) is the first huge UK name confirmed for the Abraham-Smith II undercard at the O2 World in Berlin, Germany on February 21.

Price’s addition was announced today at a press conference at the Hilton Hotel in Liverpool, where Arthur Abraham and Paul Smith came face-to-face for a second time this week to promote their WBO World Super Middleweight Championship rematch.

‘’It’s great to be fighting on the undercard of such a big show,’’ said Price. ‘’I’m looking forward to getting back in the ring and reminding everyone what I’m all about. 2015 is going to be a big year for me, its important I get off to a good start on February 21.’’

Said promoter Kalle Sauerland: ‘’Next year is going to be David’s time to shine. It’s time to stand up and be counted. The heavyweight scene in the UK is flourishing at the moment, and it is still our belief that Pricey can beat anyone out there.’’

An opponent for Price will be announced shortly. Also confirmed for the February 21 show, are rising German stars Enrico Koelling, Stefan Haertel and Tyron Zeuge. Tickets go on sale on Friday (December 12) at 12.00 (CET) and are available via tickethall.de.

Nielsen brothers have it all to prove on Saturday night

Patrick and Micki Nielsen headline a hometown show at the Albertslund MusikTeatret in Copenhagen on December 13. Defeat is not an option for the Danish boxing brothers, who have it all to prove when they enter the ring on Saturday night.

Patrick Nielsen (22-1, 11 KOs) returns, following an unsuccessful interim WBA World Middleweight title challenge against Dmitry Chudinov in Moscow, in a must win fight against Lukasz Wawrzyczek (20-3-2, 3 KOs).

‘’My training has gone really well,’’ said the 23 year-old middleweight. ‘’I’ve been working hard in the gym and I’ve had time to correct some of the mistakes I made in Moscow. Now, I feel as though I’m ready to take on anyone in the world.

‘‘I’m looking forward to getting back into the ring and showing everyone that I’m back to my best. It has been a year of ups and downs for me, but now I’m ready to finish it with a bang!’’

‘’Patrick is one of the top middleweights in Europe,’’ said his Polish opponent, Wawrzyczek. ‘’But, I don’t think he has recovered from his defeat. This is a huge opportunity for me. I will have to box to the best of my ability, but I think I have what it takes to beat him.’’

‘’Patrick will discover who he really is on Saturday night,’’ said Nielsen’s coach, former two-time world champion, Joey Gamache. ‘’A defeat can improve you or it can destroy you. Patrick lost to a good, solid fighter in Russia, and since then I feel like he has recovered well, but it will up to him to prove he can still operate at the top level.’’

Younger brother Micki Nielsen (15-0, 12 KOs) faces the toughest challenge of his fifteen-fight career when he takes on former Mikkel Kessler opponent Gusmyr Perdomo (21-4, 14 KOs).

‘’This will be my biggest challenge, but I’m ready for it,’’ said Nielsen. ‘’My training has gone well. I’m in super shape. If Perdomo is expecting an easy fight, he is in for a nasty surprise.

‘’There has been some trash talking from Perdomo, but that doesn’t bother me. Let’s see if he has something nicer to say about me after I beat him.

‘’I’m looking forward to facing one of Mikkel Kessler’s former opponents. I was in the stands watching that fight. It was an important night for Mikkel. Perdomo is an accomplished and versatile boxer, but Mikkel broke him down, and I expect to do the same in Albertslund.’’

‘’Micki is very inexperienced, and that will be a great advantage for me,’’ said Perdomo ‘’When I fought Kessler five years ago, he destroyed my dream of becoming World Super Middleweight Champion. Micki will not stand in my way of becoming World Cruiserweight Champion.’’

‘’This is a fight Micki can’t afford to lose,’’ said coach Joey Gamache. ‘’It’s without a doubt his toughest fight, but lets see how Perdomo reacts once he feels Micki’s power. Micki is a real talent and now he has the opportunity to show what he really can do. It’s a big step up for him, but he’s ready for it. I don’t think people realise how talented he really is.’’

Said promoter Nisse Sauerland: ‘’This is a big night for Patrick and Micki. It really is make or break. It’s time for both brothers to prove their potential, and where better to do it than in front of their home fans in Albertslund.’’

Commey promises excitement in Danish debut

Richard Commey (18-0, 17 KOs) is the latest addition to the Nordic Fight Night on Saturday at the Albertslund MusikTeatret in Copenhagen, and the power-punching Ghanaian is promising excitement in his Danish debut against Samir Ziani (17-1-1, 3 KOs).

‘’I’m really looking forward to Saturday,’’ said Commey. ‘’I’m expecting a tough fight. Ziani has been in with some quality boxers. He is an aggressive southpaw, but I’m confident I have the ability to beat him.

‘’I want to impress, and that’s exactly what I intend to do. The Danish fans can expect excitement and a quality performance with a little something special thrown in!’’

Commey returns having claimed the Commonwealth title in his last fight with unanimous points victory over UK prospect Gary Buckland in July. The world ranked lightweight is eager to build on this success and push for a world title challenge next year.

‘’Winning the Commonwealth title meant a great deal, not only to me and my team but to all Ghanaians. We had chased this belt for some time and we kept hitting brick walls for one reason or another but we persevered and reached our goal.

‘’After so many disappointments for Ghanaians, there was a real sense of joy and achievement and one that will help other Ghanaians realise that they can also step out of the shadows of being used as cannon fodder for UK fighters and compete at a higher level.

‘’Now, my aim is to become world champion. I want to put myself into contention for a world title challenge next year!’’

Said promoter Nisse Sauerland: ‘’We’re delighted to have Richard fighting on our show. He is one of the most exciting lightweights on the planet and will be an excellent addition to the line up.’’

Former IBF World super Bantamweight Champion Kiko “La Sensación” Martinez and former WBA Light Heavyweight Champion Gabriel “Chico Guapo” Campillo will return to action in their home countries of Spain this Friday, December 12, at the Palau Olímpic Vall d’Hebron in Barcelona.

The IBF #8- and WBO #11-rated Martinez (31-5, 23 KOs) will drop back down to his natural weight of 118 lbs. to face French southpaw Amor Belahdi Ali (13-3-1, 2 KOs) in an eight-round battle. Meanwhile, Campillo (24-6-1, 11 KOs), continuing to stay busy while waiting for another high-profile showdown, will face Czech veteran Tomas Adamek (21-10-2, 8 KOs) in an eight-round bout.

The pair of former world champs will headline a seven-fight night of boxing, presented by former middleweight champion Sergio Martinez and his Maravillabox, in association with Javier Gallego’s Gallego Prada Promociones. For tickets, visit www.marcaentradas.com or www.ticketmaster.es.

“Kiko was never a super bantamweight, he was always at his best at 118 lbs.,” said his promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing. “He only took the great opportunity offered to him at 122 lbs and made the most of it, by winning the title and defending it twice. He will be even stronger at bantamweight and will be fighting for a world championship in the near future.”

Lewkowicz says that for Campillo, it is a waiting game. “Gabriel Campillo has earned another big fight with his IBF #2 elimination-fight victory over Thomas Williams Jr. So now we keep him sharp and busy while we wait for a big fight for him.”

Campillo, says Lewkowicz, would love another shot at a fighter who defeated him in January 2013. “We would love to face (now WBA Super and IBF World and WBO World Light Heavyweight Champion) Sergey Kovalev again. That was not the real Gabriel Campillo in with him that night. He was distracted by other things. Fully focused as he is now, the real Gabriel Campillo could give a slugger like Kovalev a very hard time.”

Co-promoter and credited with discovering the special talent that is Sergio Martinez, Lewkowicz says he will continue his association with the great champion, even after Martinez retires.

“Sampson Boxing and Maravillabox will forever be tied together. I have worked with Sergio Martinez for over eight years now and he is a true gentleman and I am proud to partner with him at every opportunity. I wish him all the best with this terrific show he is bringing to the beautiful country of Spain.”

Amir Khan vs. Devon Alexander Fighter Grand Arrival & Media Workout Quotes

Amir Khan
LAS VEGAS (Dec. 10, 2014) – British superstar and former unified super lightweight world champion Amir “King” Khan and former two-division world champion Devon Alexander “The Great” made their ‘Grand Arrivals’ and performed a light workout on Wednesday at MGM Grand, just three days before their welterweight showdown this Saturday, Dec. 13, live on SHOWTIME.

Khan (29-3, 19 KOs), of Bolton, England, and Alexander (26-2, 14 KOs), of St. Louis, will square off in the 12-round main event of a SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® quadrupleheader from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

In the co-feature, power-punching interim WBA Welterweight World Champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (23-0, 21 KOs), of Clearwater, Fla., will defend against consensus top-five ranked contender and fellow unbeaten Leonard Bundu (31-0-2, 11 KOs), of Lazio, Italy, in a 12-round bout.

Former three-division world champion Abner Mares (27-1-1, 14 KOs), of Downey, Calif., will return to the ring against Mexico’s Jose Ramirez (25-4, 15 KOs) in a 10-round featherweight battle and Jermall Charlo (19-0, 15 KOs), of Houston, will take on Lenny Bottai (22-2, 9 KOs), of Livorno, Italy, in a 12-round IBF junior middleweight title eliminator fight.

In matchups on SHOWTIME EXTREME (7 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast), undefeated up-and-coming Jermell Charlo (24-0, 11 KOs), of Houston, will meet Mario Lozano (27-5, 20 KOs), of Chihuahua, Mexico in a 10-round junior middleweight scrap and unbeaten welterweight Errol Spence Jr. (14-0, 11 KOs), of Desoto, Texas, will take on Javier Castro (27-7, 22 KOs), of Chihuahua, Mexico, in an 8-round fight. Also, former world champion “Vicious” Victor Ortiz (29-5, 22 KOs), of Ventura, Calif. will battle Denver’s Manuel Perez (21-10-1, 4 KOs) in a scheduled 8-round match that will be featured on the SHOWTIME BOXING on SHO EXTREME telecast.

Here’s what the fighters had to say on Wednesday:

AMIR KHAN

“I love these kinds of events, to be near the fans, because the fans are the ones who make you.

“On Saturday, you’re going to see an aggressive, disciplined boxer-puncher. It’s always been my dream to headline in Las Vegas and to be the main attraction at MGM Grand is a great motivation for me. People believe in me. Las Vegas believes in me.

“My career has gone by so fast. I’ve fought some of the biggest names and I’ve learned so much. But I’ve never had the focus and vision I have going heading into Saturday. I feel stronger and wiser and better than I did when I was 25.

“The stakes are so enormous. I am not looking ahead. There is no way I’m taking him lightly. He’s not a champion any more so I expect him to be even more motivated.

“This is going to be a great fight on Saturday.’’

DEVON ALEXANDER

“I’m so excited about fighting this Saturday. Finally fighting in Las Vegas is a dream come true. What’s better than this?

“He is good, but I am going to expose him with my speed and quickness. He’s fast, but I’m fast too. He’s got quick hands, but I’ve got quick hands too.

“I’m going to stay in the pocket and fight. I am so confident. The time is perfect for this fight. I would love to spoil Khan’s plans for the future. In fact – I’m looking forward to it.

“This is a high-stakes matchup that will take me one step closer to the top of the list.’’

KEITH THURMAN

“I’m really looking forward to this fight and getting back into the ring after eight months. This is a good opportunity for me.

“I’m looking at 2015 as my break-out year. Some fans have already jumped on the bandwagon; others want to see more from me.

“That’s why I am so anxious to get back in there; it’s another chance for me to showcase my skills. If I knock out Bundu inside four rounds, I’d fight Khan the same night.

“Some fans think that some fights don’t mean very much, but they all do. I want high-risk, high-reward fights. I’m not taking anything away from Bundu – he’s a good opponent and this is his greatest opportunity – but it’s my time.’’

LEONARD BUNDU

“I feel I deserve this fight and am very excited about it. I’ve had a good career and fought a long time.

“Thurman is a skilled, heavy-handed puncher but I’m not scared of him. I have a lot of skills and you will see them against Thurman.

“This is my opportunity to prove that I am one of the top welterweights in the world, and that’s that I’m here for.’’

ABNER MARES

“The hunger is back, the motivation is back and I am feeling great. I’m excited and ready to fight. Being back with my old team has been huge. I want to start 2015 off in a good way. For me, 2015 kicks off this Saturday.

“I need to do what I’m supposed to do on Saturday. I want my rematch with Jhonny Gonzalez. Jhonny, I’m coming for you.’’

JOSE RAMIREZ

“I feel great and want to thank Mares for this opportunity. I’m well-trained. Saturday is going to be a great fight, just like you’d expect with two Mexicans fighting each other.’’

JERMALL CHARLO

“I’m definitely excited about Saturday. You’re going to see a lot of action. I’m action-packed and always looking for a knockout.

“Look for a fast start. I am going to steal the show. I’m going to show him what American muscle is all about.’’

LENNY BOTTAI

“I don’t like to say this is an opportunity of a lifetime but it is a great opportunity for me to make a name for myself in America against a very good fighter. That makes me very excited and anxious to fight him.”

JERMELL CHARLO

“Me and Jermell, we eat, train and workout together. So it’s only natural we fight on the same card, although it doesn’t happen very often.

“I’m just happy to fight and ready to get it over with. It’s going to be a banner 2015 for both of us – two world titles for the both of us.’’

VICTOR ORTIZ

“I hope everyone sits back and enjoys the show because that is what I am here for: to put on a show.

“I’m so happy about coming back and fighting. This is home for me, and I missed it.

“All fights are different, all opportunities are different, but we are always prepared to win. We’ll take what we get in the ring, but if the right hook to the body is there we’re going to take it.”

Youth vs. Experience: Skoglund and Johnson both chasing world title dreams

glen_johnson
It will be youth versus experience on Saturday night in Copenhagen when rising Swedish star Erik Skoglund (21-0, 11 KOs) takes on legendary Jamaican boxer Glen Johnson (54-19-2, 37 KOs) at the Alberstlund MusikTeatret. Despite their difference in age, both men share a common goal.

‘’This will be the biggest challenge of my career,’’ admits the 23 year-old Skoglund at a press conference today in Stockholm. ‘’Glen is a great boxer and he has my full respect. I may not have as much experience as him, but I’m the younger, hungrier fighter. I have the skill and the will to win on Saturday night. This is the next step up the ladder for me and another step closer to realising my dream of becoming world champion.’’

‘’Age does not matter,’’ said Johnson, the 45 year-old, seventy-five-fight veteran and former IBF World Light Heavyweight Champion. ‘’We both want the same thing – a shot at the world title. Erik is a young guy coming up, while I’ve already been at the top and I’m trying to get back into contention. I will prove on Saturday night that I still have a lot more to offer. I will become world champion again!’’

The ten-round light heavyweight clash is part of an action-packed line up in Copenhagen, which also features Danish boxing brothers Patrick and Micki Nielsen. Patrick Nielsen (22-1, 11 KOs) returns from defeat in a must win fight against Lukasz Wawrzyczek (20-3-2, 3 KOs), while younger brother Micki Nielsen (15-0, 12 KOs) faces former Mikkel Kessler opponent Gusmyr Perdomo (21-4, 14 KOs).

LARA vs. SMITH MEDIA WORKOUT QUOTES

Erislandy Lara
SAN ANTONIO (Dec. 10, 2014) – Six of the talented boxers who will fight Friday on SHOWTIME participated in an open media workout Wednesday at Champion Fit Gym ahead of what is expected to be an action-packed tripleheader.

In the main event of Friday’s SHOWTIME BOXING: SPECIAL EDITION tripleheader live on SHOWTIME (10:15 ET/PT) from The Illusions Theater at The Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, current WBA Super Welterweight Champion Erislandy “The American Dream” Lara (19-2-2, 12 KOs), of Houston, Texas, by way of Cuba, puts his title on the line against former IBF Junior Middleweight World Champion Ishe “Sugar Shay” Smith (26-6, 12 KOs), of Las Vegas, Nev., in a 12-round title fight.

In a pair of 10-round co-features, once-beaten super middleweight contender Badou Jack “The Ripper” (17-1, 11 KOs), of Las Vegas, Nev., by way of Sweden, takes on upset-minded power-puncher Francisco “Panchito” Sierra (26-7-1, 23 KOs), of Tepic, Mexico, and promising undefeated junior middleweight rising star Chris “Young King” Pearson (11-0, 9 KOs), of Dayton, Ohio, will take on once-beaten Steve “Hitman” Martinez (15-1, 12 KOs), of Bronx, N.Y., in a bout that will open the telecast.

Tickets, priced at $100, $75, $50 and $25, may be purchased by calling The Alamodome Box Office at 800-745-3000. Tickets are also available online at www.ticketmaster.com.

Below is what the fighters said at Wednesday’s workout:

ERISLANDY LARA

“People make excuses [for not wanting to fight me]. It has a lot to do with my style. I’m a crafty fighter but I can also punch. I look at it as excuses. Look at my record, look at all the styles I have fought. In 23 fights, there is not one guy in the sport who has fought all the guys that I have fought. I have fought [Carlos] Molina, Paul Williams, Alfredo Angulo, Canelo [Alvarez], [Austin] Trout. That’s six top 10 guys in 23 fights. Not even Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao have fought that type of opposition in 23 fights.

“Absolutely, I’m living the American dream. I am living a dream in general. To get good things in life, you have to go through hard times. Just like they say, hard times don’t last, tough people do, so I just keep marching forward.

“I have been working on making it absolutely clear there is no question of who won the fight [against Canelo]. As fights go on, you have to keep getting better and keep improving.

“You take an experience from every fight. I think there is no question I won over seven rounds of the fight [against Canelo]. If you want to give Canelo some of the rounds I wasn’t punching, that’s no problem, but you are not going to tell me I wasn’t punching and that he beat me in seven of the rounds. That’s crazy.

“I just want to fight the best. I want to fight Floyd Mayweather. I want to fight [Miguel] Cotto. If Canelo dares to do it again, I’ll beat him again. I’m not afraid of fighting anyone. I’ll fight the best. Look at my record, it speaks for itself.”

Ishe Smith

“This is a good opportunity being in San Antonio. This is my first time fighting here, but the fight fans are wonderful. I was here for Canelo vs. Trout and it was great. It’s just good to be here in San Antonio. Fighting in the main event, I’ve done it before and I’ve done it on the road. I won a title fighting Cornelius Bundrage in his hometown so its nothing I haven’t experienced before.

“Every fighter’s dream is to win a world championship. This is just another opportunity where I can cement my legacy in boxing when I’m gone. Obviously I can’t do this forever. I’m 36 now, its getting to that point but I’ve got many years left. I’m just excited to cement my legacy Friday.

“Lara had to do what he had to do in terms of making more money to fight Canelo. The opportunity was greater and he was on a bigger stage, so I understand that. Things happen for a reason and now we’re back here.

“We’ve prepared for the best possible Erislandy Lara on Friday. Whatever he brings to the table we’re ready for. He may shock everyone and want to stay there and fight. I’ve been hearing reports that he wants to be the first to knock me out so that means he has to fight. I’m excited about that. We’re just prepared for anything he may bring.
“Floyd brought me in when he was training for Cotto. He said boxing hadn’t been fair to me and that I deserve a title shot at least. He said, ‘I’m going to get you to the door. It’s up to you what you do when you get there.’ This is just another opportunity. He’s got me back to the door and I’m going to take advantage of it.

“Sometimes I have to pinch myself to realize I’m here. Every day I count my blessings and I don’t take it for granted that I’m still here and one of the few guys that made it out.

“On Friday, I’m going to win and as Al Davis says: ‘just win baby,’ that’s it. That’s the only thing I’m focused on. After I win I’m going to take a long vacation. These camps take a lot out of my body. I’m not 26, I’m more like 46…All I’m focused on is winning. That’s how I was going into the K9 fight. Everything was against me, we were in his backyard. All I told myself was ‘just win.’”

Badou Jack

“Camp went well; I had an injury before and its 95 percent good right now in my right hand. I had a good camp; I sparred with Ronald Gavril, Louis Arias, and a couple other guys.

“I won my last fight with one hand basically. I threw a couple of rights, but I couldn’t throw it with any power. I had a torn ligament in my right hand, but it’s healed and I feel good right now.

“I haven’t seen that much about him [Francisco Sierra], but I guess he’s about my height. He seems to have a good right hand.

“I’m confident I’m going to beat him.

“It’s a big opportunity to fight on SHOWTIME. A lot of people dream about this so I am very blessed and happy for that. I want to thank Floyd Mayweather and SHOWTIME for this. If everything goes well this fight, hopefully we get a big fight in May maybe, we’ll see.”

Francisco Sierra

“I spent the first part of training in Tepic, Nayarit and I trained the last two weeks in Guadalajara, Jalisco. Training camp has been very good. I’ve been doing very well. I’ve been training a lot, almost too much.

“I’ve fought on television many times and been to San Antonio a bunch of times. I like fighting in front of a large crowd.

“My biggest strength is my wicked punch. When I was a young kid my trainers got me up to 22 wins, 21 by knockout, and I’m just trying to keep impressing people.

“I know Badou Jack is a strong fighter but what we’ve got in common is that we’ve fought the same man, Marco Antonio Periban. I lost to him and Badou Jack didn’t win. We fought the same guy so we’re in the same category and Badou Jack’s going to have to fight. He’s going to have to give it.

“There’s a lot of Mexican blood up here in San Antonio and the Mexican people like boxing.
“It’s going to be a tough fight but I’m going to win.”

Chris Pearson

“It’s another opportunity God is giving me to put my skills and confidence on display so I’m thankful. Any time I get an opportunity I’m thankful. We put in a lot of work so we’re ready.

“I’m a boxer-puncher. I have a lot of amateur experience. I’ve been in with some tough guys and I’ve been able to beat some tough guys, so I feel like I’m proven. At this point I’m focused on Steve Martinez and on Friday night. The fans will see everything they need to see.

“Steve Martinez is just a solid guy. Not too much I’m looking out for. I know he comes to fight and I’m coming to fight, so we’ll see what happens.

“I fought in San Antonio in the amateurs. I won in the National Trials here so I’ve been here a few times…San Antonio has a lot of Hispanics here and Hispanics are some of the biggest boxing fans that support the sport. It’s going to be fun to have these guys at the Alamodome. I know the energy is going to be high.

“I’m focused on the fight right now. If I do what I need to do and take care of business and I’m sure 2015 will be a much bigger year, but I’ve got to take care of business Friday first.”

Steve Martinez

“To tell you the truth, for this training camp, I had tunnel vision. I have been focused on boxing, Chris Pearson, strength and conditioning, training, running and sparing. I have had tunnel vision preparing for this fight. The only thing I needed was a poster of him to wake up to see every morning. Everything else was blocked out.

“I watched his last fight and a couple of fights before that, but I wasn’t checking footage on him every day. A couple of times I checked him out to see what his defects are. I wasn’t doing that much studying, I let my trainer and my people around me do that.

“In his last fight there were times he got lazy, if he was to get lazy in there with me, it would be a different story. He should be on his toes and active 24/7. Every round, he must stay awake and active or else he will be baffled.

“I’m really humble, I know its SHOWTIME. I’m staying level headed. I’m not trying to be Mr. Big Shot and the star, I’m just trying to stay level. If anything bad happened [in this fight], I could rocket down. I’m staying level and staying humble. Coming out of the Bronx there are a lot of teens, kids, family members and neighbors that look up to me from my gym. It is a pleasure and an enjoyment. They know I’m working hard and I’m hungry. Coming out of the Bronx, it’s not a place where a lot of successful people come out of, so I am happy to show people that it is possible.

“My parents, friends, family and trainer know that this is a fight that I’ve been waiting for since I started boxing at 11-years-old. This is the fight I’ve been working more than half my life for to become a world champion. This is the first step to accomplishing my goals and dreams; my dream of becoming a world champion.”

TIM BRADLEY / DIEGO CHAVES MAURICIO HERRERA / JOSE BENAVIDEZ ANDY LEE / MATT KOROBOV / MIKAEL ZEWSKI LAS VEGAS MEDIA WORKOUT QUOTES

Bradley_mediaDay_140403_003a
LAS VEGAS, NV (December 10, 2014) — World championship boxing returns to The Chelsea inside The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas this Saturday! Former two-division world champion TIMOTHY “Desert Storm” BRADLEY, JR. is back in the ring, facing one-time interim world champion DIEGO “La Joya” CHAVES, in a 12-round welterweight rumble. The co-main events will feature two world championship battles — World Boxing Association (WBA) interim super lightweight champion MAURICIO “El Maestro” HERRERA defends his title against undefeated Top-10 contender JOSE BENAVIDEZ, JR. and top-rated contenders MATT KOROBOV and ANDY LEE go mano a mano for the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) middleweight crown. All three fights will be televised live, Saturday, December 13, on HBO World Championship Boxing®, beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.

The six main event fighters, plus undefeated welterweight sensation MIKAEL ZEWSKI and undefeated top-rated light heavyweight contender SEANIE MONAGHAN hosted Media Workouts today at the Top Rank Gym. Here are their quotes. Current bout sheet attached.

TIM BRADLEY
“Chaves in the ring changes so much. He has speed, steps in, gets out, can double up with his left hand. He has a complete arsenal.

“Will he get dirty? I think so particularly when we get close to each other. I have no problem with whatever he brings. I like to brawl and actually look forward to doing it.

“He’s a tough guy yes, but not as mean as Ruslan Provodnikov.

“I am only thinking winning. That’s all that is on my mind – use my skills, beat Chaves, anyway I can.”

DIEGO CHAVES
“Bradley is one of the three best fighters in the world – Pacquiao, Mayweather and Bradley. To beat Bradley it will take intelligence, movement and hard punches to the body which really bothers him. This fight will be a boxing match and not so rough as the one with Rios who is very dirty.”
“I was surprised and hurt when my fight with Rios was stopped. I really thought Rios was disappointed in the way he fought that night and that really caused all of that commotion. What happened to me that night was very unfair.”

MAURICIO HERRERA
“My experience will be a big advantage for this fight. He just has not fought at this level

“He is young and there is going to come a point in the fight where he will either step up or fold and that’s when we test his will

“The Danny Garcia fight changed my life. I finally have a promoter that is looking out for me and all I have to do is train and get ready to fight.”

JOSE BENAVIDEZ
“I heard Herrera was real mouthy today saying he would school me on Saturday night. Let’s see what he says when we get into the ring. I trained in Big Bear which is no joke because of the altitude. We train as if we are going into a 15 or 20-round fight, which means I am in top condition.”

ANDY LEE
“Korobov is a good boxer, technically sound, but the major difference is my experience in the ring. For the first time in Korobov’s career he is taking on a fighter he knows can beat him.

“Korobov is a fast starter and I plan to match him with that. My extra expierence and punching power will be the difference. He’s very much untested. I have faced far more adversity inside the ring

“I will win and thank my greatest trainer, Emanuel Steward, who I dearly miss.”

MATT KOROBOV
“I had over 300 amateur fights so I have more experience than Andy Lee has. In camp we brought in an Irish left hander and I had no problems with him. There’s danger in every fight but I don’t expect Andy to come out and rush towards me. He’s smarter than that. This is my time. Andy knows it too.”

SEANIE MONAGHAN
“As soon as the bell rings it will be my time to attack. I am going right over and blast him out. He’s good but I need this win more than he does. Look for a short fight.”

MIKAEL ZEWSKI
“This is a step-up fight for me, my final exam actually. My opponent is a strong solid fighter. I need to win and get right to the bigger fights. That’s the importance of this fight.”

“ROYAL BATTLE: AMIR KHAN VS. DEVON ALEXANDER” MAIN EVENT CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT & MP3

Amir Khan
Lisa Milner
Thank you so much, everybody, for calling in today. This call officially kicks off the “ROYAL BATTLE: Khan vs. Alexander” fight week activities. We have both Khan and Alexander on the call today; we will start with Devon Alexander and his trainer, Kevin Cunningham.

Before I turn the call over to Oscar De La Hoya, Golden Boy Promotions’ president and founder, to make the official introductions, I just wanted to remind everybody that Wednesday we will have our grand arrivals and workouts at 1:00 p.m. at MGM Grand right next to the sports book. And on Thursday we will have the final press conference with all of the televised and non-televised fighters; that will be at 11:30 a.m. in the media center. And on Friday, of course, we have the final weigh-in.

We have a lot of media on the call today, which just shows how big this fight really is and that we are going to end the year with a bang. To talk a little bit more about the fight, I am going to now turn it over to Oscar Da La Hoya, founder and president of Golden Boy Promotions.

Oscar De La Hoya
Thank you, thank you very much, Lisa. Yes, we are here, fight week. “ROYAL BATTLE” is going to be an entertaining card from top to bottom, headlined by Amir Khan versus Devon Alexander. We are just thrilled to be giving you a such an amazing card from top to bottom with a co-main event featuring Keith Thurman against Leonard Bundu which will be a WBA welterweight title fight scheduled for 12 rounds. We also have Abner Mares, we have Jermall Charlo, and we also have the return of Victor Ortiz, which, I’m hearing, he’s looking better and stronger and faster, mentally tough. We’re really looking forward to this event being a great one.

At this moment, let me take this opportunity to introduce to you our first participant, he is accompanied by his great trainer, Kevin Cunningham. And let me introduce to you, to say a few words, before we start the Q&A, Devon Alexander.

Devon Alexander
Hello, thanks, Oscar. How are you guys doing? To all the media, thanks for having me. Thanks for being on the call. Like everyone said, this is a tremendous opportunity for me. I’m excited to actually get my chance to be in the bright lights at MGM Grand.

This is an opportunity I’ve been waiting for since I was three years old and I’m going to take full advantage of it. So, again, I want to thank Golden Boy; I want to thank all the participants who got this fight done and I’m ready to rock and roll.

O. De La Hoya
Alright, thank you very much. And you can’t have a great fighter without having a great trainer. And at this moment, let me introduce to you, to also say a few words and speak about the preparation and what’s been going on behind the scenes, that is the great Kevin Cunningham.

Kevin Cunningham
I want to thank everybody on the call; thanks to all the press and the media for taking time out for this conference call. It’s a huge fight; huge ramifications. And thanks to everybody involved; Golden Boy, Al Haymon, Great Promotions, Khan Promotions.

For the most part, this is the type of fight that every fighter wants; a very big fight, it’s the end of the year so it’s the last fight of the year and it’s one of the biggest fights of the year. So we plan on ending the year with a bang. This fight will catapult the winner into Mayweather sweepstakes, Pacquiao sweepstakes, so it’s huge; it doesn’t get any bigger than this. Devon’s up for it; we had a tremendous training camp, great sparring, and we’re ready to go.

O. De La Hoya
Before we go to Amir and Virgil, let me just give you a few details on the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING event that’s taking place this Saturday. The telecast will begin at 6:00 p.m. PT. This event is being promoted by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Khan Promotions and Great Promotions. We are also extremely proud and happy to be working alongside our great sponsors that Golden Boy has. Thanks Corona Extra, thanks to AT&T, and Mexico-Live It To Believe It! The tickets are priced at $300, $200, $100, and $50; tickets are going excellent and we do expect a tremendous turn out. That goes to show you what kind of fight this is.

This is an even fight, this is a fight that, obviously, will put both guys in line, once again, for that Mayweather sweepstakes. So we are really looking forward to, once again, showcasing this event live from the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas. So we feel that the winner of this event will obviously move on to that and hit the lottery with, hopefully, a Mayweather fight down the line.

We have, also, SHOWTIME EXTREME, which I mentioned, which will be showcasing the highlights of Victor Ortiz. Errol Spence, Jr will be on the telecast as well. We have Jermell Charlo versus Mario Lozano; that’ll be a 10-round junior middleweight fight. So this card is really stacked and we are really looking forward to it.

So, now for all the media, we can now go to a couple of questions before we go into Amir Khan.

Q
This fightwas supposed to have taken place a year ago. How different is it, fighting him a year later?

K. Cunningham
Well, fighting him now, the only thing different about the fight is the fact that we’re not coming in as the champion. That’s the only difference I see in it.

D. Alexander
Well, me personally, I feel the same way, just I’m not champion anymore, but the stakes are still high and the reward is still there. So, there’s no difference. Not one of us has lost recently, so I don’t see any difference. Both of us are still going to be hungry, both of us know what’s at stake, so it’s no different.

Q
Kevin, did you prepare Devon a little differently, given that Amir might be a different fighter now that Virgil Hunter’s working with him?

K. Cunningham
Well, we prepared based off the challenge ahead of us and the opponent ahead of us. Each opponent is different so we prepare based off what we’re dealing with and what style and the type of opponent we dealing with. There’s always different preparations for each fighter because there’s different styles, different techniques, so you got to come with different strategies for different opponents.

We prepared for Amir Khan, the best Amir Khan that could possibly show up Saturday night; that’s who we prepared for. He’s with Virgil and he’s a better fight since — he looks to me to have improved since being trained by Virgil Hunter and that’s the Amir Khan we prepared for.

The fact that Virgil is his trainer and Virgil happens to be, also, a good friend of mine, that just got my juices flowing even more so that could be trouble for Khan.

Q
Kevin, you’re focused on Devon getting in the ring with Amir Khan, you got to win the fight. But, is it at all, in your mind, that this is, maybe, that last step to the big mega fight that you’ve wanted for some time?

K. Cunningham
Definitely. I didn’t say the fight wasn’t as big because we weren’t coming in as champion because the stakes are still high and the whole purpose of the first fight was to catapult the winner into a Mayweather mix. The stakes are still high and the ultimate prize is still there.

We’re just as excited, just as jacked up as we were for the first fight. It doesn’t get any bigger than this and we know what the stakes are, we know what the type of position that you’ll be put in coming off a win in this fight, so it doesn’t get any bigger than this. The fighters, I’m almost sure both fighters, but I know Devon for sure, is super excited, focused, and ready to go.

Q
Devon, can you speak about that? Do you try not to think about it? Does it motivate you? What are your thoughts about the prospect of putting on a performance against Amir on Saturday and then maybe propelling yourself into that caliber of an event?

D. Alexander
Well, like my coach said, this is definitely exciting and it’s in the back of my head. A fighter would be lying if they say, I’m not thinking about that; I’m thinking about the opponent ahead. But, you know they’ll be lying. So, it’s in the back of my head, but my sole focus is Amir Khan. Everybody knows what can be after the fight, but I’m focused on Amir Khan and what he brings to the table. After this, then we’ll talk. Other than that, my sole focus is on Amir Khan.

Q
The Porter fight was, by your own admission, not even close to your best performance. What do you think went wrong that night and how have you changed when you’re going in with Khan, who is probably a fighter that’s more on the same level of a Porter than of a Soto Karass?

D. Alexander
Well, in that fight I wasn’t thinking in that fight. I didn’t follow the game plan. Mentally I wasn’t there. Mentally I was just not using my skill in that fight. Mentally I just wasn’t there.
I didn’t use my legs. I took him a little lightly because I beat him in amateurs, but that’s no excuse. I know that the loss was from what I didn’t do; it’s not what Shawn Porter did and he was a magnificent fighter. He had all these skills. It was just something I didn’t do and it won’t happen again, I promise you.

Q
With Khan you then think that he fits into your style of fighting?

D. Alexander
Yeah, he fits — every fighter fits in my style of fighting. I just got to know their weaknesses and what I got to do is – out-power them and outsmart them. Everybody can be beaten. It’s about the team coming up with the game plan to beat the guy that’s in front of you. I don’t see anything special with Khan, he’s a little fast, but what else? Everybody’s fast. But what else, you’ve got to have something else in your arsenal at the top level.

Q
Why has it taken so long for you to make your way to Vegas? Was it something that just wasn’t on your radar or was it just the right opportunity never came along until now?

D. Alexander
Yeah. It was all because of opportunity. I wasn’t presented with a time to fight in Vegas. A couple of times, in the beginning of my career, when I was supposed to, it always fell through. But, like I said, I said to myself, whenever I do fight in Vegas, it’s going to be for something big and what’s bigger than this and at MGM Grand. So, I’m excited to be in Vegas for this one.

Q
Given all that’s going on in St. Louis and Ferguson, specifically, do you feel like this is a fight where you’re corner of the world really needs a win?

D. Alexander
Yeah. Yes, of course. I want to bring all the positivity. I know all of St. Louis is going to be looking at me from the Ferguson situation. They’re looking for something positive to come along with all of the rioting and everything like that. This win is going to make them feel like they won, too. So, I definitely want to make it; definitely want to look good and make a statement doing it and bring this victory back home to St. Louis.

Q
Outstanding. Alright, I’ve got a question; it could be for you and Kevin. Does it kind of bother you that it almost seems like civil rights is being ignored in boxing. Does bother you that nobody’s really speaking up?

D. Alexander
It’s just everybody — you get scrutinized when you come out and say something or it’s like you get punished for saying what you feel nowadays or just saying the truth. So, a lot of people are scared to say anything. If the time’s right for me to say something, I’m definitely going to say something. That’s just what it is. You have to be real sometimes and you have to tell the truth at times; you just can’t — you got to work out the consequences later. If it’s the truth and it’s real, then how can anybody argue with it?

K. Cunningham
I just think everybody’s wants to stay politically correct because everybody’s image-conscious so they’re focused on their image. You got corporate sponsors and you got to be careful about annoying your sponsors and whatnot. You don’t have a lot of the guys that stood up like the Muhammad Alis, the Jim Browns and Kareem Abdul-Jabbars, who were back in the day.

That’s a political situation and everybody wants to be on the right side of the political issue in terms of their image, and wants to stay politically correct because of monetary values and to protect their sponsors and protect their faith; they don’t want to screw over their career. People will turn on you if the wrong thing comes out your mouth because once it goes out there, you can’t take it back. So, you have to be careful. But if it’s the truth and it’s from the heart, I don’t see any problem with speaking up for what’s right.

Q
Kevin, how close is Ferguson to where Devon grew up and how much do you think about, now, what you helped to save Devon from, when you think about situations that happen like that?

Q
Well, Devon grew up about 20 minutes from Ferguson, but I grew up in Ferguson; went to Ferguson Junior High and Ferguson — McCluer High School, which is in Ferguson. So I actually grew up in Ferguson. Devon grew up, maybe, 15 minutes away from Ferguson.

It’s a sad situation, but I think it’s a situation that’s taking place not only in Ferguson, but it’s all over the country. When you’ve got the powers that be and the city hall and the police department that doesn’t represent the community that it’s serving, you’re going to always have problems. So, until we get to a point to where we can go out and vote and put people in office that understand the people in the community that they’re representing, there’s going to always be problems. I think that’s a nationwide problem, not just a Ferguson problem.

Q
Are you guys going to do anything visually to represent what you’re going to do in the ring in terms of representing St. Louis?

K. Cunningham
Yeah, we’re going to represent St. Louis the way we always represent St. Louis. We’ll have Mike Brown, Sr., he’ll be at the fight with us. That’s pretty much what we’re doing in a nutshell, in reference to that.

Q
Oscar, can you talk about the light that’s going to be shined on the welterweight division on Saturday night given that, Tim Bradley’s fighting Diego Chaves, and Khan’s fighting Alexander, and Keith Thurman is also fighting that night, and what emphasis that puts on those fighters?

O. De La Hoya
The welterweight division will have all eyes on it this Saturday with Amir and then Devon, you mentioned Tim Bradley, Keith Thurman; winners out of those fights will be in line and knocking on that door to fight Mayweather or Pacquiao. This is a very important night and that’s why ticket sales are going extremely well. That’s why both fighters know what’s at stake and I think we’re going to not only get an entertaining night of boxing for all the fans, but we’re also going to have a clearer picture on who’s going to be fighting Mayweather and Pacquiao next.

Q
What are you going to do to be the last man that they’re talking about on Saturday night? Is a win going to be okay or do you really need to look impressive?

D. Alexander
Well, I got to bring out all the stops in this fight. I got to bring my skills and it’s just got to be me. I need to be Devon Alexander “The Great” that guys have been knowing me to be; I’m going back to the days where people knew me as up-and-coming star. That’s the performance I’m looking for and that’s what I’m bringing to this fight.

I definitely need to win and I want to look good doing it. I think all of the winners that night is going to be a lot of people looking at them and saying these are the future of Welterweights. So, I definitely want to look good doing it.

Q
This being your first fight in Las Vegas, are you going to be composed? Is there going to be nerves or did those previous experiences and longing to be there, is that going to be enough preparation for you?

D. Alexander
Yes, of course. I’ve been on the big stage before and I’ve definitely been prepped. Those are the times that were prepping me for the time for MGM Grand. All the times that I’ve been coming to the ring and getting ready and getting those nerves out, that’s prepared me for MGM Grand.

I’m actually kind of excited. I’m kind of in the mood of I’m just smiling and being happy and enjoying the moment. I’m just ready to get in there and do what I do and show people how good I am. I’m definitely going to take full advantage of this situation so no nerves at all, just happiness.

Q
The last question for you, is it almost more appropriate that you’re making your Las Vegas debut as a fighter given what is at stake and given that this could be the jumping off point, the culmination of all your frustrations about not getting certain fights, not stepping up when you should of at the right time? Is it almost more appropriate that this is your debut?

D. Alexander
Definitely. It can’t get any bigger than this. You’re in Vegas at MGM Grand inside the building where all the top fights go. So, it doesn’t get any bigger than that. A lot of action’s coming on December 13h and I plan on being victorious. I plan on just telling people the next day how I did it and how I was able to dismantle Khan.

Q
Oscar, are you working under the assumption that we’re not going to see a Mayweather, Pacquiao fight next and that’s why these guys have a chance to step in with Floyd?

O. De La Hoya
I’m just speaking as a promoter on what these fighters deserve. I don’t know if a Pacquiao and Mayweather fight’s going to happen; I have no idea.

Q
You don’t have any inside information that you’re working off of and you’re not making assumptions either way, you’re just setting that up in case it doesn’t happen? The idea?

O. De La Hoya
Well, the world has been waiting for it for several years. What makes me think now is the time? Why should I believe that it’s going to happen now?

Q
Devon, I do wonder do you believe that Khan is past the problems that he’s had with his chin or do you think that’s tightened up under Virgil Hunter?

D. Alexander
In my very best opinion, if you’ve got a shaky chin, this is boxing and if you’re just not born with a chin or if you’re not born able to take a punch, you’re always going to have troubles. You’re always going to have troubles with a good shot. It’s about being able to be in good position not to get hit with good shots and I think Virgil’s working on him with that and he’s trying to correct that. But, it’s his fight so you’ve got to be able to take a shot because you’re going to get hit.

Q
Kevin, you and I have talked about this before, wondering if Floyd would fight the sort of athlete that Devon is? Do you assume that he would take the fight, especially if Devon won and looked good?

K. Cunningham
I don’t see why he wouldn’t. Floyd’s fought everybody. I haven’t seen Floyd ducking anybody. This is a huge fight, it’s a huge promotion. These are two of the bigger names in the welterweight division and the winner of this fight deserves a shot at Floyd. I think Floyd will step up and give the winner of this fight a shot, for sure, and it’s been a while since Floyd has fought a athletic, quick, African-American fighter anyway, so I think he would step up to the challenge. I think he’d step up and give the winner of this fight a shot, regardless if it’s Devon or Amir Khan.

Q
Oscar, what’s the key to Amir Khan winning and what’s the key to Devon Alexander winning?

O. De La Hoya
I actually have no idea; I’m the guy outside looking in. I didn’t train both guys, I didn’t get in there.

But, from a fighter’s perspective, from a promoter’s perspective, I think Amir Khan, we all know he has speed, he’s developed a lot of power now at 147-pounds, and there’s a lot of great things that Amir Khan does and, likewise, so does Devon Alexander. He’s a great fighter and that’s why they call him “The Great”. He’s a guy who can adjust. He’s a guy who is fast and strong. And the great thing about this fight is that both guys, not that they have something to prove, but they want to prove something in this fight Saturday night. So, it’s going to be entertaining.

D. Alexander
Thanks for all the media, thanks to Oscar, again, who’s done a tremendous job on my career since I’ve been with him, and thank you to MGM Grand, everybody that had something to do with the fight in May. See you guys this week. I’m going to be excited and it’s going to be an awesome fight.

O. De La Hoya
Alright, thank you very much. Today is Amir Khan’s birthday, so we want to wish Amir Khan a very happy birthday. Happy Birthday, Amir Khan.

He’s the former Unified Super Lightweight World Champion and he’s won numerous World Titles. He keeps on proving over and over and over again what type of fighter he is on the world-class stage. He had a tremendous win against a young, hungry, at his peak at the moment, Marcos Maidana where he just proved and showed to the world what a warrior he is.

So let me introduce to you, facing Devon Alexander, with a record of 29-3, with 19 KOs, out of Bolton, England, that is Amir “King” Khan. Amir.

Amir Khan
Hi, Oscar, thanks for the introduction. I just wanted to thank all the media for taking part in this conference call.

Today I’m feeling really good. I’m feeling in great shape, not far off the weight. The weight’s been good, as well. I’m really focused on this fight; not looking past this fight, just looking at Devon Alexander. I’ve been working with Virgil Hunter, my trainer. I’m here to beat him, sticking to that game plan in the fight, and then also been doing all kinds of conditioning work so we’re going to be in full condition and in great condition for this fight. If it goes the full distance, it goes the full distance.

We’re going to be ready, we’re going to be in front of Devon, and we’re going to have the engine to go all the way through with good work and a good volume of punches. We didn’t get time off for 12 weeks, 13 weeks, I’ve been in training camp. I’ve got a dietician, I’ve got a chef cooking for me getting me the right food, which I think has made a marked improvement for how I feel when I go into the gym and train. I’m not cheating myself in anyway, I’m getting in my calories at the right time.

I’m feeling fresh, I have great sparring partners; I’ve flown guys over from all over America to come spar with me. Heavy guys and light guys and guys that move, guys that come forward, guys that come in front of me, from every different angle. We don’t know what we going to be expecting. As I’ve been watching videos of Devon, Devon’s a good fighter. He’s a descent fighter going forward. We’ve worked on everything possible, really. We did not leave anything out.

When we come to fight night on December 13h, we’re going to be ready for whatever he brings to the table and we’re going to have all the answers. So, thanks, again, for joining the conference call and that’s everything from me. Thanks.

Q
This fight was one that almost came off a year ago. Do you regret not taking it then and rolling the dice on trying to get Floyd back then?

A. Khan
I think things happen for a reason and I think it was my first fight at the 147-pound division. It didn’t happened last December because, obviously, we changed a few things and I was hoping for the big fight against Floyd and that fell through. But you need time to build into this weight division even though I got to work on what I needed to work on like my boxing skills and defense and taking my time. When you’re in training camps, you’re focusing on you’re fighter and how to beat an opponent. That’s all, you never really work on your mistakes.

So this time when I didn’t really have an opponent, I was just working on improving myself, keeping in the gym. I had back-to-back training camps, so then when I did have that fight in May against Collazo, it was a great performance so it showed me a lot of things and it proved to me a lot of things that spending time in training camp in between camps, in between fights, does make you a better fighter. I think Devon’s got me at my best time, I’m much better at 147. I feel stronger at this weight and I’m going to be more than ready; I’m going to be more ready than I was last year.

Q
Do you feel, in hindsight, that you were deceived by the Mayweather camp, at all?

A. Khan
That’s life. It’s just one of those things. Everything happens for a reason, and it wasn’t meant to be my time and I’m not going to let it get to me, but I used it in a way as an advantage, to help me and to make me work on the things I needed to and spend a lot of time in the gym. Having to do that so when I did have my first fight at 147, I was very strong and I was on top of my game.

Q
Now that you’ve had more time to work with Virgil, would you say that you’re focusing on getting in less exchanges and looking to be a more defensive boxer, or would you say that’s not true?

A. Khan
I’m still going to be the fighter that I am. It’s just in me; it’s in the blood. We’re just smarter. Whenever we put an attack together, there’s a reason why we’re putting that attack together. There has to be a way out or there has to be a way to stay out of trouble during that assault.

So you can still be exciting, you can still be come forward, you can still throw a lot of punches, but being careful at the same time. That’s what Virgil’s brought to the table; making me a better fighter. He’s making me a fighter that understands everything of what I have to do in the ring and stick to that game plan.

Q
How does Devon differ from Paul McCloskey and Zab Judah, if at all, in terms of his southpaw stance and the skills he brings to the table? Amir, can you address that, because I know you had a little bit of problems with Paul McCloskey before that fight was ended?

A. Khan
No, I think the Paul McCloskey fight, I think we were winning that fight comfortably. I think we got to the fight, got five rounds and the head clash happened and he was cut and he didn’t want to continue, but I was beating him every round before then. It was a clean win for me, really, because the head bop. Against Collazo, here again, he’s another southpaw which I won every round, and I won that fight by a very wide margin. I box really well against southpaw guys. Devon is going to bring something else to the table, but I have the confidence behind me that so far every southpaw I’ve fought I’ve beaten.

Q
What does Devon bring that is new?

A. Khan
Devon brings hand speed to the table. He brings movement, likes to be aggressive, so we’re going to be ready for whatever he brings to the table, and whatever he does we’re going to have answers for. He’s going to come fight, it’s a massive opportunity for him. He’s going to Vegas, and obviously he wants to put on a performance. Being in Vegas, I’ve headlined there a few times, so I know exactly what to expect, so I’m going to be nice and calm. But, it’s a good time for him, and he should make the most of it.

Q
Virgil, can you address what he said about Devon and how the fight maybe with Collazo helped to prepare him for this one, or is that a completely different fighter?

Virgil Hunter
There are two different fights, but as long as you have the proper mindset, you should be able to make the adjustments. Without a doubt, as Amir said, Devon brings a lot of attributes to the fight, and you have to be able to adjust to those attributes at any given time. That was the purpose of our camp, in order to try to negate whatever he brings, but there’s no doubt that he brings a lot to the table.

Q
Virgil, you had said when you first got him that it’s going to take a while for him to break some old habits. Did he, in fact, do all of those things against Collazo, and why do you think it took that fight? What all culminated in that fight?

V. Hunter
I think one of the main things that happened that leading up to the Collazo fight is that we had a lot of time to work together. He was anticipating another fight, so he was coming here and I was going to England, so we spent a considerable amount of time together. During those times we worked on things that we felt would enhance his ability and also make him more aware of what’s going on in the ring.

I would like to think that he has graduated tremendously to another level, but there are other levels to obtain. He has a high bar set. I don’t think he’s reached that bar yet, but you can’t continue to get better until you can continue to set the bar high. So, I’m very happy and pleased where he is at this point in his career and at this point in our relationship.

Q
Of course you’ve been going after that Mayweather fight for a few years. How important is it for you to make an emphatic statement in beating Devon Alexander Saturday night?

A. Khan
You know what? Why do you go to the Mayweather fight? I think every fighter in the welterweight division wants that big fight against Mayweather to see how they’d do against the best fighter. Us young fighters, and us hungry fighters, we want to fight the best and you want to beat the best and you want to see how you do against the best. You never want to leave boxing one day thinking, well, what would have happened if I fought someone like Floyd?

Styles make fights and some styles cause problems to Floyd. Some styles I believe could beat him and some styles probably could be made for him. So, you have to just go with the flow, but going in to this fight, winning this fight could lead to a massive fight bill. To be honest with you, I’m not looking past this fight because I know it’s a dangerous fight for me, and I made that mistake before in the past. I used to look past the fights, and fights I should have gone in and won, so I’m not that doing that anymore. And my team’s taught me not to do that.

Look, I’m so young, I’m 27, well, 28 today, and I’m still learning and as a young fighter I’m hungry and I just have to sometimes pace myself and just stay calm, and be patient. That’s the main thing, being patient, taking my time and whoever they put in front of me, deal with that person and take a step back. So, I’m not looking past this fight against Devon, because it’s going to be a tough fight for me and we have to stay focused and not really make any mistakes and look good against Devon.

Q
What’s it been like working with Virgil, and with that one year that you took off following the Julio Diaz fight, what’s the most you’ve improved on?

A. Khan
Working with Virgil is great, coming to the gym. It’s not like it was in the Wild Card, or anywhere else, like training in a gym that’s full and you’ve got people watching you and stuff. When we go to the gym it’s very isolated, it’s very quiet. It’s a good thing because you can focus on what you need to do, and you only have people in the gym who are your gym mates and staff and the gym manager. Only having five or six people, and that’s the most, that’s when it’s busy.

So, I think that’s what a fighter needs to focus. You don’t need a big gym in front of people, because sometimes that can distract you being the young man you need to be. I’m such a nice person and if someone tries to speak to me I’ll speak back to them, and I’ll stand there while I should be training, so really we have a gym which is closed doors and I focus.

What Virgil brought to the table, he made me a better fighter, he made me an understanding fighter, who understands what boxing’s all about and not to make any mistakes. I’m not going back to my old self again. It’s going to be in the blood where I love to fight and everyone knows that.

So, with Virgil, he’s made me much smarter. For this fight I must have done over 160 rounds of sparring, which helps, because the only way of putting it together and seeing where you are, seeing what you’re up to is when you put it to work. I put it to work against good sparring partners and working against them and I kept my focus, kept my composure, and I know it’s going to definitively help me when it comes down to Saturday, because I’m going to be more focused and I’m hungry; I really want to win this fight because this fight is a big fight for me.

Q
Virgil, what’s it been like working with Amir and what has helped you the most in the two years that you’ve been training together?

V. Hunter
Again, I think any coach would enjoy working with a fighter such as Amir who has such immense talent. At the same time you’re merging together after years of him boxing. So, you want to be careful about how you make changes and you want to be careful how you implement things, so it is an entire process. The entire process is continuous. It hasn’t stopped, it should never stop until the day that he retires.

There’s always room for improvement, room for growth, and there’s also adjustments that you have to make in your style and transitions and recreations as you get a little older. So you have to prepare for 30 when you’re 28. It’s just something that we have committed to, and we just take it one fight at a time. We have a goal of being better in each fight, and that’s how we’ve gone about it and so far it’s worked for us.

Q
Amir, how has this training camp gone so far?

A. Khan
It has been great. I’ve been in training camp for 13 weeks and been working very hard and we’ve mixed it up with lots of conditioning, with lots of technique work, lots of sparring, lots of trying new things out, and working on them and it’s improving my old style; improving things I need to improve on. It’s been so much fun, I’ve had a great camp and been very focused and I’ve been watching the diet and eating clean, which I understand that better now because when you eat clean you train better. It’s like putting good fuel in a car, you know it’s going to drive better.

You put good fuel in your body you’re going to work harder. Little things that I’ve learned and I’m only becoming the full package. I’ve got a lot of room for improvement yet, but I’m slowly learning. I’m improving, that’s the main thing. You can compare the Amir Khan 12 months ago to the Amir Khan now, I’m way ahead, I’m much better and much smarter. Hopefully on Saturday you’ll see a massive difference. Every fight I’m different. Every fight I’m different, so you’ll see a better Amir Khan going into the fight Saturday and a clever boxer.

Q
Do you feel any pressure, Amir, to try and out block Devon to make your punches count and to earn those points on the scorecard?

A. Khan
We’re just going to stick what we’ve got on the game plan and I know exactly what we’re going to do in the fight. It’s going to work for us and whatever that other fighter did, Shawn, or Bradley, I’m going to beat him and get up there. That was their technique, and that was their game plan. Now we have some things and we’re going to have our own game plan and we’re going to stick to that. It’s going to work for us. Whatever they did, it worked and it shows that some things may work against Devon, but we have our own style. My style is different to Bradley’s and different to Shawn Porter’s and I’m always different depending on my opponent, how I fight.

Q
How hard it is to not look towards the future knowing that a Floyd Mayweather fight is probably a lot closer than it was a year ago when you were promised a fight, but ultimately didn’t get it?

A. Khan
Yeah, look, it’s going to be tough not looking past this fight, but obviously I made that mistake before, so that’s what helps me to stay focused and I never want to make that mistake again. I’m a lucky guy because I have a tough task in front of me. I’m not taking this fight lightly. It’s going to be a tough fight and I want to win this fight. And not only win it, but win it with style, with fashion.

I want the boxing fans and the world to demand a fight between me and Floyd. I want people to demand it when they see Amir Khan is such a good fight. They’re going to be like, wow, he should fight Mayweather. I don’t just want it to happen, I want people demanding it.

Q
Virgil, I just have one question for you. Do you ever look at a fight as training more for the fighter and actually trying to fight who’s in his corner as well? Do you get that same kind of vibe training for a fighter that’s being trained by Kevin Cunningham?

V. Hunter
Well, no, because it’s a business and Kevin I knew years ago when we were developing fighters from scratch that these days would come as well as a lot of other colleagues that came out of that 2004 class; Barry [Hunter], Mike [Stafford] and even Naazim [Richardson]. We knew these days were coming. So, you have to block them out.

There’s always a measuring stick in this sport, and Devon Alexander is a tremendous measuring stick. You’re here to excel and both sides, and it’s a time test, but it certainly will never, ever effect the friendship that we’ve built up over the years. But on Saturday night we have to block it out and we have to tend to the business at hand. So, that’s how you pretty much have to look at it.

Q
The question with you has been your chin over the years. What have you done to improve that? Is there anything you can do; is it legwork or whatnot, to keep you from actually being hurt again if you’re hit with a clean shot?

A. Khan
The shots I’ve been hit with in the past, I’ve run in to those shots and I’ve been off balance and so when you get hit with a shot you go down. I make it look worse because I’m not in the right balance and my footwork’s all over the place. I run into to a shot, and when you run into a shot it’s like you’re getting hit twice as hard, so these are things we’ve kind of cleaned up a little bit and been more smart about when we attack and not jumping in with our chin in the air and stuff like that, really.

The shots I’ve been hit with, I think whichever fighter gets hit with those shots they are going to go down. It’s just the way I made those mistakes going in when someone is shot and not having any defense and when you rush in to a shot and you don’t see the punch coming, it hurts you twice as much. I don’t think people probably understand. Boxers will understand.

But we cleaned it up, we’re not the fighter that we were before. We fought Collazo, we’re much smarter. I think in the whole fight he got probably one good shot and I think everything else we were smarter because we didn’t rush in and be silly about fighting him or hurting him. So, I’m slowly, as I’m getting older I’m getting wiser and I’m getting more experience behind me and come fight night, hopefully we’ll know exactly what to do against Devon and we know not to make mistakes and we know he’s quick, so that makes you a little bit more on the edge. It makes you think more and it makes you much more smarter because you’ve got a guy in front of you who’s going to be quick and explosive and he wants to win.

Q
There seems to be a difference in you, you seem a lot more at ease now. And I’m just curious; how much of that has to do with Mr. Hunter?

A. Khan
It has a lot to do with Virgil because early in the day, Virgil is teaching me to stay calm in the gym and not rush and not get anxious. It’s a 12-round fight, you don’t go in there and try to knock the opponent out early on. That’s one thing that worked for me in the earlier fights was I just hit my opponent so early in the fight that they never expected it and that kind of grew with me and stayed with me and stuck with me and I started doing that all the time and I started quick because I think I’ll get my opponents cold, but no, it’s a 12-round fight. I’ll have a good pace, I’ll be smart in the fight and as long as I stick to the way I fight, I don’t think anyone can beat me.

I have the fastest hands in boxing and I have one of the best boxing skill sets in the world, so if I just be smart and stick to those skills, I don’t think I’ll have any problem with anyone. It’s all about when I lose that focus and I don’t stick to that game plan. That’s when I make mistakes. Under Virgil I’m much smarter and I don’t make any mistakes. We all make mistakes as young fighters but I don’t make the same mistakes I used to make.

Q
It’s your first fight since your daughter has been born. How does being a family man change your approach to training?

A. Khan
It helps. I think it helps you because at the end of the day, don’t get me wrong; I miss my daughter, I miss my family and everyone. I haven’t seen my mom, my wife, for a long time, so you miss them, but I think this only makes you a stronger fighter. It makes you a focused fighter, and you know all the sacrifices it take to become a champion. So yeah, you miss them, but straight after the fight I’ll get to see my family.

Well, I’m going to see my mom probably tomorrow, I’ll see her, she’s in Vegas, I fly to Vegas late tonight, so probably late tonight I’ll see my mom. I’ll see my wife and my baby girl in New York a day after the fight, like on a Monday or something. I’m looking forward to spending time with family, but at the moment they understand about work. I’m a fighter, and they know that. I need focus and I can’t make any mistakes and I can’t be distracted in any way. I got to spend some time with them while I was in training camp, but you can’t really spend much time with them because you are focusing on your job and it’s quite hard, but now when I go home I can spend some real family time with them.

Q
Amir, how’s it been working with Virgil Hunter and what have you guys been working on?

A. Khan
We work on a lot of things with Virgil. We’ve been working on the defensive side of boxing, the offensive side of boxing. Not making mistakes and not getting carried away; sticking to that game plan for fights. Since we’ve been doing that and in sparring we put it to practice and rehearsed it sparring it’s been working for me. Plus the strength conditioning, which is Tony Brady, who’s been working me very hard, as well, and putting me in the right condition. So, with Tony Brady and also Virgil putting work together, I got everything I needed in this training camp and I feel so strong. I feel mentally prepared because I know I’m not cheating myself; I’ve done everything right on top of all the hard training I’ve been watching my diet, eating clean food, having the right nutrition.

So, that helps a lot. One thing new is I’m actually doing very hard work with a nutritionist playing a part. I never really focused on that, but as I’m getting older I’m getting wiser and I’m understanding this sport a little bit more and every little bit helps you and makes you a better fighter. So, I’m happy with the way the camp’s gone, it has gone great and I’ve got to work very hard and eat good and stay healthy.

Q
You’re fighting at the home of boxing, the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. What’s the buildup been like? Has it been any different?

A. Khan
When I’ve been on Twitter and I’ve gone on to my Facebook and stuff, people have been posting pictures of when they’re in Vegas. These are normal holiday-makers from the UK who have been tagging me in saying we’re so happy to see Amir Khan, picture of Amir Khan, a guy who’s from Britain. It makes me happy because these people are on holiday and they see this big, huge picture of me. It just shows that the promotion is massive. And I want to thank my team, Golden Boy. I want to thank all of them for doing all that because they promoted this fight really well and everywhere you go in Vegas you’ll see posters of Amir Khan on billboards on the hotels and people are talking about the Amir Khan fight.

Fighting at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, which is a mecca of boxing, it’s the best arena in the world, the biggest arena in the world when it comes to having a fight. You have the likes of Mike Tyson, who fought there, made it his home, so to have a huge fight there is great. I fought in Vegas a few times, but MGM Grand is going to be my second time. The first time was when I fought an undercard, but this time is going to be the Amir Khan show, so I’m looking forward to it. This is only going to drive me and motivate me to go out and do more in my career because already at 28 I’ve done so much and there’s still a lot left in me.

Q
Amir, you’re fighting a second southpaw in a row now. Is this a sign that perhaps Manny Pacquiao is on the cards next?

A. Khan
It could be three in a row then, if it was Manny Pacquiao. I fight whoever they put in front of me and with Golden Boy we looked at the Collazo fight, which I think made sense. Now I’m against Devon Alexander. Hopefully we beat Devon Alexander, then we see what the future holds for us.

I really belong on the big stage, belong in the lights of Mayweather, Pacquiao, facing those guys. So, it’s all about just being smart and picking the right fight at the right time and not making mistakes. Devon, he’s a very dangerous opponent for me at this stage, and I can’t really look past it. Being a week away I’ve changed just for him, I’m focused on just Devon Alexander, but I belong in the top, elite, cream of boxing and I really believe that Amir Khan needs to fight. I do belong in the same ring as the likes of Mayweather, Pacquiao and those guys because I’ve worked very hard at my whole career and hard work pays off. Definitely, as long as I keep winning, stay focused in this fight, we’ll get the win and we’ll move on from there.

L. Milner
Okay, that was our last question. Amir, can you make a closing statement?

A. Khan
I just want to say thanks to all the media. You’ve been great. The promotion for this fight has been amazing, having all you guys support and writing great articles. I’ve been reading them. It’s been very moving reading this stuff and you’ve been saying a lot, you have a lot of confidence in me to go out there and get through this fight and look good and be the future of boxing.

I also want to thank Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions, him and the team and Khan Promotions. Also Devon’s team for taking this fight. It’s going to be an exciting fight. This is what boxing needs coming towards the end of the year, we need an explosive fight; a fight people are going to be on the edge of their seats, and this is what this fight’s going to bring.

So I hope you all tune in. It’s going to be on SHOWTIME, and I want to thank the SHOWTIME team for their great promotion, as well, and also they’re going to be showing the fight. So, I’m looking forward to it on SHOWTIME. I hope you guys are tuned in if you can’t make it to the fight, tune SHOWTIME. And in the UK, SHOWTIME, Sky, hopefully we can win the fight and move on from this.

Alvarado vs. Rios 3: Saturday, January 24 Live on HBO

Mike Alvarado
DENVER (December 9, 2014) — Former world champions and co-stars of one this era’s most intense and exciting boxing rivalries — Denver’s “Mile High” MIKE ALVARADO and BRANDON “Bam Bam” RIOS of Oxnard, Calif. — announced the final chapter of their epic trilogy at a Denver press conference today. Boasting a combined record of 66-5-1 (45 KOs) — a winning percentage of 92% and a victory by knockout ratio of 68% — each warrior owns a victory in the series — both of which were candidates for Fight of the Year in 2012 and 2013. Alvarado-Rios 3 is scheduled for 12 rounds with the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) International welterweight championship on the line. It will take place Saturday, January 24, at the 1STBANK Center, located in the Denver suburb of Broomfield, CO. The fight will be televised live on HBO, beginning at 9:45 p.m. ET/PT. The last boxing event hosted by 1STBANK Center was sold out in advance — the October 19, 2013 WBO junior welterweight world championship between Alvarado and Ruslan Provodnikov.

Promoted by Top Rank®, in association with Tecate, tickets to the Alvarado-Rios welterweight championship event will go on sale just in time for the holiday gift giving season — This Friday! December 12, at 10:00 a.m. MT. Priced at $250, $200, $125, $65 and $40, tickets will be available at www.AltitudeTickets.com or by phone at 866-461-6556. Tickets may also be purchased at the Pepsi Center box office, beginning on Saturday, December 13.

“This is going to be like our wars in fight no. 1 and fight no. 2. We are two warriors. We will go into the middle of the ring and mix it up. For me, all of this is for one thing — redemption,” said Alvarado.

“If Alvarado wants to go the center of the ring and trade, he will feel my power right away,” responded Rios. “A few of my big punches and he will change his game plan. That’s when I hunt him down, win the fight.”

“This is a rematch made in heaven,” said Todd duBoef, president of Top Rank. “Their first two fights were barn burners and arguably Fights of the Year. Alvarado and Rios know what is at stake. Fans can expect to see a finale that will rival, if not surpass, the legendary Morales-Barrera and Pacquiao-Marquez wars.”

“In 2015, we begin with a trilogy’s conclusion. In the course of two years and 3,003 punches exchanged between them, Mike Alvarado and Brandon Rios traded triumphs,” said Peter Nelson, vice president, programming, HBO Sports. “Now, in their third fight, both seek to author their saga’s definitive chapter. Styles make fighters, but fights themselves are made from heart, and fans recognize that these men have two of the biggest hearts in boxing. On January 24, Alvarado-Rios 3 promises to be a must-see event.”

Alvarado (34-3, 23 KOs) of Denver, had won 10 of his last 14 bouts by stoppage en route to his rematch victory over Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios, on March 30, 2013, which not only avenged Alvarado’s loss to Rios in 2012’s Fight of the Year, but also made Alvarado a world champion. Alvarado had lost to Rios on October 13, 2012, via a seventh-round technical knockout in one of the most action-packed fights of the millennium. Going into round seven, two of the three judges’ scorecards had it 57-57. In the sequel, which was as action-packed as the first fight, Alvarado made subtle adjustments to eke out a narrow but unanimous decision and win the WBO junior welterweight world title. Notable Alvarado knockout victims have included Breidis Prescott, Ray Narh, Emmanuel Clottey and Cesar Bazan. In 2012 Alvarado fought in two Fights of the Year-nominated fights. On April 14, 2012, Alvarado went toe-to-toe for 10 brutal and exciting rounds winning a unanimous decision over Mauricio Herrera (18-1, 7 KOs). Herrera entered that fight world-rated No. 7 and riding a two-year, five-bout winning streak, highlighted by victories over future world champion Ruslan Provodnikov (17-0) and Mike Dallas, Jr. (17-1-1). That was followed by his first fight with Rios in October. Alvarado’s world title reign ended in his first defense, on October 19, 2013, where he suffered a12th-round TKO to Provodnikov in front of a sold-out crowd at the 1STBANK Center in his Denver homecoming. Rios returns to the ring after losing a unanimous decision, in his most recent fight, to Mexican icon and four-division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez last May 17.

Rios (32-2-1, 22 KOs), the former WBA lightweight champion, from Oxnard, Calif., is on the hunt for his second world title in as many weight divisions. Thirteen of his last 17 victories have come by way of knockout. One of boxing’s most exciting fighters, Rios is known for his all-action fan-friendly fighting style. His trainer, former International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior lightweight champion and 2012 Trainer of the Year Robert Garcia, calls it a “throwback” style with a warrior’s mentality that screams excitement. Highlight knockout victories on Rios’ resume include Miguel Acosta, Anthony Peterson, Urbano Antillon, John Murray and Mike Alvarado. Alvarado, the natural 140-pounder, entered that fight as the undefeated WBO No. 1 junior welterweight contender. Many consider it 2012’s Fight of the Year. In their exciting rematch, which took place on March 30, 2013, Rios lost a close decision for the vacant WBO interim junior welterweight title. It was considered a finalist for the 2013 Fight of the Year award. After losing a unanimous decision to Fighter of the Decade Manny Pacquiao, on November 24, 2013, which headlined a pay-per-view event that emanated from Macau, China, Rios returned to the winner’s circle in his last fight, on August 2, winning a gritty, foul-filled battle against former interim world welterweight champion Diego Chaves, via a ninth-round disqualification.

A talented international cast takes the spotlight in Las Vegas when WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING: TIMOTHY BRADLEY JR. VS. DIEGO CHAVES, MATT KOROBOV VS. ANDY LEE AND MAURICIO HERRERA VS. JOSE BENAVIDEZ is seen SATURDAY, DEC. 13 at 10:00 p.m. (live ET/tape-delayed PT) from The Chelsea at The Cosmopolitan, exclusively on HBO. The HBO Sports team will be ringside for the event, which will be available in HDTV, closed-captioned for the hearing-impaired and presented in Spanish on HBO Latino.

Other HBO playdates: Dec. 14 (8:45 a.m.) and 15 (midnight)

HBO2 playdates: Dec. 14 (6:00 p.m.) and 16 (midnight)

Former junior welterweight and welterweight champ Timothy Bradley Jr. (31-1, 12 KOs) of Palm Springs, Cal. is one of the sport’s most recognizable fighters. Polished and resourceful. Following his first loss as a pro to superstar Manny Pacquiao last April, he’ll look to bounce back in this 12-round welterweight rumble.

Diego Chaves (23-2, 19 KOs) of Buenos Aires, Argentina is a power puncher who seeks to score a knockout in every fight. He was disqualified for excessive fouling in the ninth round of his last outing, a competitive ten-round bout with Brandon Rios in which one judge had him ahead.

Second on the bill, two gritty middleweights square off for a vacant 160-pound title belt, as Matt Korobov (24-0, 13 KOs) meets Andy Lee (33-2, 23 KOs) in a 12-round contest. Both Korobov, a 2008 Russian Olympic team member, and the London-born Lee, a veteran of the 2004 Irish Olympic team, are pursuing their first world championship, which could lead to huge fights in the competitive division.

The opening bout is a super lightweight showdown pitting Mauricio Herrera of Riverside, Cal. (21-4, 7 KOs) against Jose Benavidez (21-0, 15 KOs) of Phoenix in a 12-round tilt. Herrera has fought some of the most dangerous opponents in the division, including titlists Mike Alvarado, Danny Garcia and Ruslan Provodnikov. Benavidez had a sensational amateur career, winning the Golden Gloves national championship at age 16. Since turning pro at 17, he’s undefeated in 21 bouts.

WSOF 16: Two Matchups Added To Saturday’s NBCSN Live Telecast

LAS VEGAS (Dec. 9, 2014) — Already featuring a star-studded lineup with two championship fights, including welterweight kingpin Rousimar Palhares vs. Jon Fitch and featherweight title holder Rick Glenn vs. Lance Palmer, “World Series of Fighting 16: Palhares vs. Fitch” now has two more action-packed matchups.

The two new main-card contests include featherweights Brenson Hansen (7-2) vs. Josh Berkovic (5-0) and welterweights “Lethal” Lewis Gonzalez (9-1) vs. Justin Buchholz (15-8).

“From start to finish, I think this might be the most exciting card we’ve ever put together for NBCSN,” World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo said. “The two championship fights are absolutely incredible, and Sheymon Moraes vs. Gabriel Solorio looks like a fantastic matchup, as well. Now we’re seeing a superstar-in-the-making in Brenson Hansen meet an undefeated challenger looking to build his own name in Josh Berkovic. Then you have top prospect Lewis Gonzalez returning to the World Series of Fighting decagon against a battle-tested fan-favorite in Justin Buchholz.

“I think we’re in for a very special night of fights.”

“World Series of Fighting 16: Palhares vs. Fitch” takes place this Saturday, December 13, at McClellan Conference Center in Sacramento, California. The evening’s NBCSN-broadcast main card kicks off at 9 p.m. ET (6 p.m. PT local time) following preliminary bouts that stream on World Series of Fighting’s official website, WSOF.com, at 6 p.m. ET (3 p.m. PT local time).

Tickets for the event, which start at just $50, are available at WSOF.com.

Hawaii’s Brenson Hansen now lives in Las Vegas and trains at the world-famous Xtreme Couture camp. Just 25 years old, Hansen has already compiled a 3-1 record fighting for World Series of Fighting, debuting with a spectacular flying-knee knockout of Tom Marcellino before bookending victories over Boostayre Nefarios and Josh Montalvo around a contentious split-decision loss to Freddy Assuncao.

Meanwhile, the undefeated Josh Berkovic is fresh off his stint as a coach of Team Melendez on “The Ultimate Fighter 20: A Champion Will Be Crowned.” A California native, Berkovic fought most recently in February, earning a first-round submission win over gritty veteran Anthony Avila. The result was Berkovic’s third straight first-round finish.

California’s Lewis Gonzalez is one of the most talented featherweight prospects on the World Series of Fighting roster who opened his professional career with nine consecutive wins, including an upset of Antonio McKee in his first fight for the promotion. Gonzalez returned in August, where he suffered a knockout loss to Luis Palomino in a thrilling standup war. He now looks to rebound from the first defeat of his career.

Meanwhile, Justin Buchholz will enjoy home-field advantage as a key member of Sacramento’s Team Alpha Male. The 31-year-old, who is often seen in the corner of teammates Urijah Faber, T.J. Dillashaw, Chad Mendes, Joseph Benavidez, Danny Castillo and Andre Fili, among others, returns to the cage for the first time since a five-round loss to Clay Collard in September 2013. Prior to the loss, Buchholz had been 6-1 in his previous seven appearances.

Ismael Barroso Smashes Another Foe

Venezuelan lightweight terror Ismael Barroso (16-0-2, 15 KOs) continued his devastating ways by smashing out Mexican veteran Maximiliano Galindo in three brutal rounds last Friday night (December 5).

Fighting in Galindo’s hometown of Sinaloa, Mexico, Barroso dropped Galindo in the first and second rounds and then twice more in round three, the final time for good.

Barroso’s promoter, Greg Cohen of Greg Cohen Promotions, says that his fighter was typically impressive. “Galindo had fought some decent foes but no one is ready for the kind of power my fighter brings to the table. He’s punching lightweights with the power of a heavyweight.”

Barroso, from El Tigre, Venezuela, is 31 and ready for his prime time debut on the near future.

“It’s time to unleash him on the US,” continued Cohen. “He’s a terrific talent from South America and pretty soon he’ll be known all over the world. We’re putting together a series of fights for Ismael that will land him at the top of boxing, where a fighter with his power belongs.”

Hurd decisions Sanchez in main event at Harrahs Philadelphia

Chester, PA (December 8, 2014)–This past Friday at Harrahs Philadelphia, some of the best young prospects in the country were featured on a six bout card promoted by King’s Promotions and XFE.

In the main event, Jarrett Hurd held on the defeat late replacement Emmanuel Sanchez via six-round majority decision on a Middleweight bout.

Hurd was aggressive early and took the first half of the fight. Sanchez, who took the bout on just two days notice came back and befuddled Hurd by boxing off the back foot and landing straight left hands.

Hurd’s early work was the difference by winning by scores of 59-55, 58-56 and 57-57 to raise his perfect mark to 14-0. Sanchez is now 5-2

In the co-feature, good looking Jr. Lightweight prospect Omar Douglas scored an impressive first round stoppage over Osnel Charles in a scheduled six-round bout.

Douglas looked very sharp and then landed a booming left hook that slumped Charles between the bottom and second rope and the fight was stopped at 2:21 of round one.

Douglas of Wilmington, Delaware is now 13-0 with 10 knockouts. Charles of Atlantic City is now 10-13-1.

18 year-old Milton Santiago Jr. boxed very well in pounding out a 4-round unanimous decision over Travis Thompson in a Lightweight bout.

Santiago, who is showing improvement in each battle fought off Thompson’s hard work inside to win by shut out of 40-36 on each card.

Santiago, who is a Sr. at William Tennent High School improves his mark to 8-0. While Thompson falls to 7-12-3.

Stephen Fulton of Philadelphia stayed perfect by scoring a 4-round unanimous decision over Benjamin Burgos.

Fulton, who was a Philadelphia amateur of the year, used quick hooks and straight right hands to offset the hard charging Burgos.

Fulton landed the much cleaner blows and Burgos was docked a point in the final round for hitting behind the head.

Fulton, 20 years old of Philadelphia won by scores of 40-35 on all cards and is now 3-0.

Former amateur standout Caleb Plant was impressive in stopping Darryl Gardner in the first round of their scheduled 4-round Middleweight bout.

Plant of Tennessee, dropped Gardner with a vicious double left combination and Gardner was down for a several minutes.

The bout was stopped at at 1:35 of round one and Plant’s record is now 5-0 with 4 KO’s. Gardner of Washington is now 2-5.

In the opening bout, Brooklyn’s Earl Newman boxed well with his jab before taking out Jade Ealy in the first round of their scheduled 4-round Cruiserweight bout.

Newman landed stiff jabs before opening up a hard flurry on the ropes. Ealy covered up and the bout was stopped at 2:57 of round one.

Newman is now 3-0 with 3 knockouts. Ealy is 1-2.

King’s Promotions will be back with another outstanding card just after the new year.

Antonio ‘Magic Man’ Tarver Not concerned about ring rust

antonio_tarver1
MIAMI (Dec. 8, 2014) – Five-time world champion Antonio “Magic Man” Tarver (30-6, 21 KOs) won’t be concerned about rust this Thursday night when he fights for the first time in more than a year against veteran Johnathan Banks (29-2-1, 19 KOs).

Tarver-Banks is a 10-round heavyweight fight, presented on a Goossen Promotions card, airing live on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes from Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, California.

Tarver suffered a now-fully-healed fractured thumb to his left hand, closer to the wrist, postponing the original September 29th fight date versus Banks. The 1996 U.S. Olympian has had only five fights in the last six years.

“I’m not concerned with rust,” the cagey southpaw said. “If I’m rusty, it will only be until I’m hit. I’ve been trying to wear off ring rust with intelligent sparring but that’s not like getting reps of a fight.

“I have to beat a solid heavyweight with power like Banks to get where I want to be. I will become the oldest world heavyweight champion in boxing history! He will be surprised by a lot of what I bring into the ring.”

Tarver has been training at the Brazilian Rocky Fight Club in Miami for the past three months to prepare for Thursday’s fight with Banks, who trained world heavyweight champion Wladmir Klitschko for his recent knockout win over Kubrat Pulev.

“I always stress to my fighters in the gym for them to work in rhythm and not be sluggish,” Tarver’s head trainer Orlando Cuellar explained. “Sluggishness and not fighting in rhythm are what shows when there’s ring rust. You always worry about rust. I can honestly say Antonio hasn’t looked rusty but, working in the gym and actual fighting are two different things, and we really won’t really know until this week’s fight. Antonio has always told me that he’s not a good gym fighter but that, once the bell rings for the first round, he’s a great fighter.

“This is the first fight we’ve worked together and Antonio has done everything I’ve asked of him in training for the last three months. He took five days off to be examined by his personal doctor and other than that he’s been working hard, even when he wore a cast. The first four weeks were tough for him because I train my fighters to stop and drop their opponent. It’s high intensity work, much harder than most fighters go through, but he’s given his all in workouts and sparring. With our experience, his as a fighter and me as a trainer, I expect nothing less than the best from Antonio. It’ll be much easier for both of us, training-wise, for his next fight.”

The 46-year-old Tarver, fighting out of Tampa, was one of the world’s top pound-for-pound fighters during a 4-year, 9-fight stretch between 2002-2006, in which he had a 6-3 record, defeating Roy Jones, Jr. in two of three, splitting a pair with Glen Johnson, defeating Montell Griffin, Eric Harding and Reggie Johnson, and losing to Bernard Hopkins.

Banks, 32, has been out of action even longer than Tarver, having last fought June 23, 2013 in a 12-round loss by unanimous decision to Seth Mitchell.

“”Every fight is independent in itself,” Tarver noted, “so, I can’t say I’ve fought anybody like Banks. I have fought a lot of guys with power who know how to box. Everybody has two hands and two feet but he can only use one hand at a time. I simplify things. I will be in my best shape and I won’t be surprised by whatever he brings into the ring.”

KT: I feel strong, I am dropping weight on schedule and am looking forward to getting back in the ring after this minor layoff.

CT: Knowing that we’re both fighting step-up fights we pushed each other to the maximum.

ES: I’m feeling really good. I’ve been sparring 10-12 rounds with 30-second breaks without any problem.

VO: I’m feeling great just making sure I pay attention to my coaches and work hard every day.Q: What have you been doing to pass the time when you are not in the gym or training?

AK: I’m relaxing and resting. I spend time studying Devon’s style. My brother and dad are in town so I have company. We go out to the mall or for walks. I’m a very chill guy.

DA:Well when I’m getting ready for a fight I’m completely zoned in on that fight, so I don’t do much. I train and then I’m back home. Maybe I’ll see a movie every now and then.

KT: Lately I have been playing musical instruments on my down time, it’s entertaining.

AM: Spending time with my family. I’ve been spending the most time ever with my kids and wife and it’s really important to me and it’s what I love to do when I’m not working.

CT: We spend time with our families. Jermell just bought a new house. Things are getting better in life for both of us. We’re also traveling and experiencing different boxing styles.

KT: That it’s not over. My future is bright, and it motivates me to work harder every day.

AM: Thanksgiving is always great because my family always take turns to say what we are thankful for and it’s great to hear everyone’s blessings.

ES: My favorite is cutting the turkey at Thanksgiving.

VO: I would have to say Halloween just to see the scary people and costumes.

Q: If you could invite one historical figure to a holiday dinner or celebration this season who would it be, and why?

AK: Muhammad Ali, he is my boxing hero and Mike Tyson who is now a friend. It would just be good to talk about boxing and they can tell me about their careers.

KT: Jesus, because he is the King of Kings and his spirit lives on.

AM: It would be Cesar Chavez to thank him for fighting for my people and our rights as immigrants.

VO: That’s a fun question. There’s so many people around that I wouldn’t really know who…

Q: What’s the one holiday food item or fixing that you must have this season?

AK: Thanksgiving dinner. Turkey, sweet potatoes and big bowl of salad.

AK: My baby daughter Lamaisah, who was born in May. It’s a great feeling being a father and it’s further motivation in my career.

DA: What I’m most thankful for is being able to still be here getting blessed with tremendous opportunities. There’s so much that I’m thankful for.

KT: Thankful that I’m here, this life, this blessing and for the experience of growth. And I am thankful for the many more years in the sport and life in general.

AM: My health and being able to help others in some way.

CT: We’re most thankful for having a very close family. We’re very grateful of for all that Ronnie Shields and Al Haymon have made possible. Al gave us the chance and now we’re thankful for our position in the sport of boxing. We’re getting closer and closer to world titles.

ES: My health and the support that I get from my family and friends.

VO: To a great team that I have from Coach Joel, Coach Hoss, Coach Antonio, Coach Jose and Al Haymon, the Watson family and Scott Karp and Sam Spira. I have lots of good people in my corner in and out of boxing.

Cuban trainer Ismael Salas in Beibut Shumenov’s corner

LAS VEGAS (Dec. 8, 2014) – After being self-trained for his last three fights, former World Boxing Association (WBA) Light Heavyweight World champion Beibut Shumenov (14-2, 9 KOs) is now working in Las Vegas with highly-regarded Cuban head trainer Ismael Salas.

Salas, who has trained world champions such as Guillermo Rigondeaux, Yuriokis Gamboa, Danny Green, Jesse Vargas and Jorge Linares, is preparing Shumenov for his cruiserweight debut this Saturday night (Dec. 13) against West Virginia fighter Bobby Thomas Jr. (14-2, 9 KOs) in an eight-round bout for the NABA US title, on the Golden Boy Promotions-presented Khan-Alexander card at MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

“I’ve had a lot of changes after my last fight,” the 31-year-old Shumenov said. “I trained myself for the last three fights but now I have added a great trainer, Ismael Salas, to my team.

“I come from Kazakhstan and I was taught the Soviet Union boxing program. The Cuban boxing program has a lot of similarities, so, for me it was easy to pick up Ismael’s teaching method. The addition of Ismael to my team, along with a few other minor changes, has brought about a real positive environment. I look forward again to going to the gym every day and having fun.”

“There was chemistry between us from the beginning,” Salas explained. “In Beibut, I found the old Russian and Cuban boxing fundamentals, so, it was easy for me to approach Beibut’s style but in a professional manner. We talk with all key members of Team Shumenov to discuss his weekly training, including sparring, to do everything the right way.

“We started working together in September and fortunately I provided the right tools he needed for his style. Since the beginning I’ve explained to him that I wouldn’t change his style, just improve it and approach him about working angles better. His strength is toughness and power punching. All he needs is to maintain his game plan. As long as he stays healthy going into a fight – that is most important – moving up to cruiserweight will not affect his power and mobility.”

WBA No. 2 rated cruiserweight Shumenov, a 2004 Kazakhstan Olympian who lives in Las Vegas, captured the WBA light heavyweight title January 29, 2010 by way of a 12-round decision over Gabriel Campillo. Fighting as a professional in only his 10th professional bout, Shumenov established the fewest-fights record for the light heavyweight champion of a major organization with his victory over Campillo.

Shumenov successfully defended his WBA light heavyweight title belt five times against previously unbeaten mandatory challenger Vyacheslav Uzelkov (DEC12), former world champion William Joppy (KO6), multiple world title challengers Danny Santiago (TKO) and Enrique Ornelas (DEC12), and previously undefeated Tamas Kovacs (TKO3).

Brooklyn Brawl returns to Webster Hall Jan 22nd

Brooklyn, NY (December 8, 2014)–The Holiday Season is in full swing, and soon enough, we will be ringing in the New Year. Already, plans are being hashed out for the year in boxing 2015, and promoter Dmitriy Salita is anticipating the forthcoming year will be chock full of stellar live events, and marked growth for the fighters under his Star of David Promotions banner.

On Jan. 22, Star of David will throw a New Year’s bash, and present an evening of professional boxing at the famed New York City venue Webster Hall, Salita announced today.

“I am happy to be back in Webster Hall, a beautiful landmark building in the heart of New York City,” Salita said. “The January 22nd show will showcase some of the hottest contenders and prospects in the world. The card is stacked from top to bottom!”

Topping the bill will be cruiserweight contender Steven Bujaj (13-0-1), who will defend his New York State cruiserweight title in an eight round bout. Also on the card will be the man who gave Bujaj the roughest test of his career, Junior Wright (12-0-1). The Chicago-based hitter, newly signed to Star of David, fought Bujaj to a draw last May, and has notched two wins since that scrap. Wright will compete in a six-round bout.

Wright, who has his eyes on a world title crack soon, is currently in training camp with WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson, to help the Canada-based fighter prepare for his next bout.

Salita is thrilled to have Russian cruiserweight Alexey Zubov (6-0, 4 KOs) on the Webster Hall event. The national amateur champion fought more than 120 amateur bouts, and possesses power in both hands, so it’s a good bet he will score a highlight-reel knockout in NYC.

Also compteting in six round bouts will be New York city favorites and Brooklyn Brawl regulars lightweight Dimash Niyazov (6-0-3, 4 KO’s) & Middleweight Akil Auguste. Marcos Suarez (3-0-1, 1 KO) will also return to the ring in a four-round Jr. Welterweight bout; all three have a loyal fan base who cheer them on at Star of David promotions.

Popular Italian fighter Super Featherweight Floriano Pagliara, a fan fave in the NYC region, returns to the ring as well in a six round bout.

The show will take place at Landmark NYC venue Webster Hall. Click here for tix info.

Abraham-Smith II confirmed for February 21 in Berlin

arthur_abraham
The rematch is on! ‘King’ Arthur Abraham (41-4, 28 KOs) will defend his WBO Super Middleweight crown against Paul Smith (35-4, 20 KOs) on February 21 at the O2 World in Berlin, Germany, in a return of their September showdown in Kiel.

In their first meeting Abraham retained his title with a unanimous points victory over the former British Champion. However, many felt the judges’ scorecards failed to reflect the close encounter, leading to immediate calls for a rematch.

‘’I’m a man of my word,’’ said Abraham. ‘’I promised Paul that I would give him a rematch after our first fight in Kiel. I will honour that promise. However, Paul should be careful what he wishes for. I’ve already beaten him once and this time I plan to win in even more spectacular fashion. On February 21, I will knock him out!’’

‘’Arthur and his trainer said he would stop me in the first fight,’’ said Smith. ‘’We all saw what happened there. It was only with the judges’ help that he beat me. I believe I won the fight. This time, I know I can beat him.’’

‘’We promised Paul the rematch and Arthur was happy to oblige,’’ said promoter Kalle Sauerland. ‘’He is a great champion who has never shied away from a challenge. I’m sure it will be another entertaining fight. Germany vs. England always adds an extra spice to an event. We’re expecting an atmosphere second to none on February 21.’’

Smith’s promoter Eddie Hearn said: ‘’Paul brought fantastic support with him for the first fight, this time, with the controversy and the build up, there is going to be an even bigger following travelling over to Berlin. Paul gave a great account of himself in Kiel. He proved he can operate at world level. Everyone can expect a fantastic fight on February 21.’’

Tickets for the WBO World Super Middleweight Championship clash go on sale Friday (December 12) at 12.00 (CET) and are available via tickethalle.de.

But risks must be taken because the greatest hazard of life is to risk nothing.” – René Carayol

2014 is coming to a close. It’s been a testing year, but a good one that has seen me beat Angino Perez and Daniel Calzada in Las Vegas, Nevada. Next up is the tough and durable Miguel Zuniga in San Antonio, Texas. To end my first full calendar year with Mayweather Promotions with a 100% win ratio will be a fantastic achievement.

Fight week is at last now upon us. Some of the best fighters in the world will be battling it out in America this weekend; Erislandy Lara v Ishe Smith is the main event in Texas. My friend Ishe has had a great camp and is in a very winnable fight to become a two time world champion. He’s already in the record books as the only Las Vegas born fighter to win a world title.

I’m within days of my 37th victory. 40 will be my target for next year, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves – it’s important to focus on one fight at a time. I’m getting close to 12 years as a professional fighter. I have five more years to continue winning and inspire the next generation in the process. 50 professional wins is a record I’ll be proud to finish with. Very few reach that incredible milestone.
I’ve always believed in myself and I’ve always been the underdog. I’ve always benefitted from proving doubters wrong. It’s normal for me to do everything the hard way. Where I’m from, only the strong survive.

I’ve fought in America, Luxembourg, Saint Lucia, Germany and England. Winning in all those countries.
This is my tenth fight in the United States of America. A childhood dream kick started my journey but that dream did not know just how tough this would really be. The route available to me has been brutally hard and many have fallen by the wayside trying to get to where I am at the moment. It has been incredibly hard and quite lonely at times. It took a long ten years before a promoter backed me.

My determination and perseverance has been worthwhile and paid off when the number one boxer in the world saw my potential, believed in me, and put me on the biggest most lucrative boxing show ever.
I’ve always had to walk the untrodden path to fulfil my destiny. I’ve always had to go against the grain.
Many love me, a few hate me, but most I hope just respect me across the world of boxing.

Being the best I can be is what I demand from myself – every day. Pushing myself into the unknown, and be what people believe is not possible or available to me. I’m not in the business of doubting myself, in fact it’s the complete opposite – I must back myself every minute in that ring and I’ve become used to backing myself in all I attempt. It’s the only way to achieve anything in this tough life we have chosen.

It certainly helps when you have a great team behind you and I’m blessed to have that.
Come this Friday I’ll be looking to end my year with a sound victory and move on to a bigger, better and more lucrative 2015.

Paul Williams Joins Team Fight to Walk!

New York, NY (December 7, 2014) – Three time world champion Paul “The Punisher” Williams is the newest member of Team Fight to Walk.

A fixture on the pound for pound lists and a fan favorite, Williams had an outstanding 41-2 record with 27 wins by knockout. Williams, a two-division titlist, became paralyzed from the waist down following a motorcycle accident in May 2012. Even after becoming a paraplegic from the accident, Williams maintained his signature smile and a great attitude.

Recently, Williams connected with Team Fight to Walk co-founder Boyd Melson in New York City, where he helped Williams find speaking engagements. During their time together, Melson took Williams to Rutgers University to meet Dr. Wise Young. He showed Williams patients treated during clinical trials in China. Williams saw the patients walking following a surgical procedure that enabled their axons to regenerate. Young is planning to conduct the same trials next year in the United States. Amazed by what he saw, Williams immediately joined Team Fight to Walk.

“Being a member of Team Fight to Walk is an incredible feeling,” said Williams. “Regardless of how I felt, people were telling me that I was never going to walk again but after meeting Boyd and Dr. Wise Young, you can’t tell me anything! I saw people with Spinal Cord Injuries walking again and their cords regrowing. It’s amazing how God works because he brought all of us together and I’m confident as ever that I’ll walk again.”

Melson is also overjoyed about having Williams on board and knew it was only a matter of time until the two connected.

“From the day I heard about Paul’s accident, I tried to get in touch and let him know there was hope. Thankfully, we were able to connect and I showed him the incredible results from Dr. Young’s clinical trial in China. He’s an important member of the boxing world who can help our outreach tremendously. Like (Team Fight to Walk founder) Christan (Zaccagnino), Paul’s life changed in a split second but now he knows that results of trials overseas means there’s plenty of hope for both of them. I believe that Christan and Paul will walk again once the clinical trials take place in the United States.”
