It’s official: Pascal taking on Bolonti; Hyppolite, Butler & Ulysse on PPVundercard

jean-pascal1
MONTREAL (Nov. 25, 2014) — Jean Bédard, the president of InterBox, announced
that the NABF Light Heavyweight Champion, Jean Pascal (29-2-1, 17 KOs), will combat Argentina’s Roberto Bolonti (35-3, 24 KOs), instead of Donovan George (25-4-2, 22 K-.O.) next December 6, at the Bell Centre. This decision was taken after careful consideration following long negotiations with Donovan’s team. Boxing fans will also be thrilled by the undercard, which features locals Shiller Hyppolite (13-1-0, 9 K-.O.), Steven Butler (8- 0-0, 7 K-.O) and Ulysse Jr (4-0-0, 3 K-.O), among others.

Early on in the re-negotiations, InterBox inquired about Bolonti’s interest in going up against Pascal, so Bolonti’s team has been ready from the beginning – only awaiting a positive response from InterBox. The Argentinian, who has been training hard for the last two months, is motivated and looking forward to taking on the considerable challenge.

“There comes a time when negotiations have to stop and you’ve got to move forward. Pascal versus Bolonti was a scenario we’d already considered, and we think it’s the right one. Plus, it’s important for Jean Pascal to fight so he can direct his career,” Bédard explained.

“This time, I was lucky to have a good, long-term training camp for combat outside Argentina,” Bolanti said. “It would have been a shame not to have the opportunity to fight. Although his style is different than Bute’s, Pascal is just as big a challenge for me.”

So, these two fighters who were going to be in the ring with other opponents on the same evening, will – in the end – fight each other in a grand finale at the Bell Centre. Though they lost their respective adversaries, Pascal and Bolonti are both eager to win. Roberto ‘the Beast’ Bolonti comes into the fight with imposing record: 35 wins including 24 by knockout.

A striking undercard

Steven Butler vs. TBA
Never having been beaten, Steven ‘Bang-Bang’ Butler (8-0, 7 KOs) is definitely a rising star in the boxing world. This former Canadian senior champion, who will be in the ninth fight of his career, has been pretty busy since he started professional boxing on March 28 of this year.

Shiller Hyppolite vs. Norbert Nemesapati
‘Batman’ had to pass on his fight scheduled for November 21 in Sorel-Tracy, as his adversary bowed out. Now Montrealers have a chance to see him strut his stuff in the ring; this time against Norbert Nemesapati (15-1, 14 KOs). Shiller has also made it clear he’s gunning to take on Bolonti soon.

Joel Diaz Jr vs. Pedro Navarrete
The protégé of the Jean Pascal Promotions stable, Joel Diaz Jr (17-0, 13 KOs), will weigh-in on Canadiens’ territory for the first time, against Mexico’s Pedro Navarrete (28-19-3, 17 KOs).

Bogdan Dinu vs. Mickael Vieira
The scion of Stéphan Larouche and InterBox, now settled in Montréal with his family, will be concentrating on keeping his perfect record when he goes up against Frenchman Mickael Vieira (14-4, 7 KOs).

Ulysse Jr vs. Lukasz Janik
Poland’s Lukasz Janik (12-7-1, 6 K-O.), having already gone up against Jo Jo Dan, will be fighting the so-far-unbeaten boxer known for his lightning fists: Ulysse Jr (4-0, 3 KOs).

Zewski
InterBox is currently awaiting confirmation that Mikaël Zweski will be at the Bell Centre on December 6, rather than in Vegas.

Cohen Congratulates Cecil McCalla for Impressive KO Victory Friday Night

Greg Cohen of Greg Cohen Promotions is sending out congratulations to his welterweight fighter, Cecil McCalla, of Baltimore, Maryland, for his TKO 1 over Mexico’s Francisco Javier Reza on Friday night at the Chase Center in Wilmington, Delaware.

McCalla (20-0, 7 KOs) came out firing hard punches, especially left hooks, from the opening bell and scored two knockdowns over the tough Mexican. After the second hard knockdown, referee Vic de Wysocki had seen enough and waved the fight off at the :47 mark.

“That is exactly what a future star like Cecil McCalla is supposed to do with his opponents,” said Cohen. “Although I am surprised by how quickly he was able to get Reza out of there.”

For 29-year-old McCalla, the victory over Reza was his fourth fight of 2014, after sitting out most of 2013.

“Cecil is sharper than ever and ready to make his assault on the division’s best. He’s constantly in the gym with his trainer Lee Beard and the combination of his diligent work and staying quite active showed in his performance tonight.”

Cohen says the next step for McCalla will be a bigger, televised fight in the coming year.

49 YEAR OLD HEAVYWEIGHT CONTENDER “BRONCO” BILLY WRIGHT DEFENDED HIS WBC TITLES WITH KNOCKOUT WIN

LAS VEGAS (November 24, 2014) – This past Saturday in Bolivia, WBC #18 heavyweight contender, “Bronco” Billy Wright (46-4, 37 KOs), continued his amazing run of consecutive knockouts, while climbing up the WBC rankings.

Bronco Billy scored with a first round knockout against Juan Carlos Flores-Choque (14-4, 13 KOs), extending his KO streak to 13. Billy Wright who turns 50-years old on December 10, 2015, extended on another streak, winning his 17th consecutive fight in a row.

In the process, Bronco Billy defended his LATIN AMERICAN, FECARBOX, and United States (USNBC) Silver titles, all sanctioned by the WBC. Not wasting any time, Bronco Billy Wright is looking to get back in the ring on Dec, 6, 2015.

“If I’m able to lock down an opponent, I’ll be fighting again on December 6th, said Bronco Billy Wright. “I’m looking to close out the year with another knockout. That will make it five fights in 2014, all wins coming by way of knockout. I’ll turn 50 on December 10th. Going into 2015, I’m confident my WBC ranking will move up. I’m willing to fight any of the top contenders to get me closer to my dream of becoming heavyweight champion. The only problem is none of these guys are willing to fight me. That can all change in 2015. I’m looking to make history.”

At age 49, Bronco Billy Wright is a legitimate figure in the heavyweight division. With his winning streak intact, Wright could be in a major fight with a top contender in 2015.

ALEX SANCHEZ TRAINER CONVINCED HIS FIGHTER CAN BEAT LaMANNA DEC. 13 AT 2300 ARENA IN PHILLY

Philadelphia, PA—Junior middleweight Alex Sanchez gets the fight he has been asking for when he takes on unbeaten Thomas “Cornflake” LaManna in an all-New Jersey battle on Saturday evening, Dec. 13, at the 2300 Arena in South Philadelphia.

Topping the card are a pair of eight-round fights featuring lightweight Felix Verdejo, of San Juan, Puerto Rico, vs. Karim El Ouazghari, of Barcelona, Spain, and super middleweight Jesse Hart, of Philadelphia, vs. Samuel Miller, of Arboletes, Colombia. Those two matches will be televised as part of Top Rank’s Solo Boxeo Tecate series on UniMas. The delayed telecast will begin at midnight (EST). First of seven prelims begins at 6.45pm.
Sanchez, 31, of Camden, NJ, is only 4-5-1 as a pro with two knockouts, but he claims the road he has traveled has been much harder than the one taken by LaManna, whose 15-0 record includes seven K0s.
“Records don’t mean a thing,” said Martin Diaz, who manages and trains Sanchez. “We’re always the opponent; we never get to pick and choose the kind of guys that LaManna fights. We wanted eight rounds for this fight and 158 pounds but we were forced to settle for six rounds and 160 pounds.
“We also got a lot of bad decisions. Alex beat Fred Jenkins, Jr., nasty for six rounds in March and they gave Jenkins the decision. Why? Favoritism, I guess. Why doesn’t LaManna fight Jenkins? He just gets the right fights to build his record. We never had that luck. Look at the poster for this fight. They have LaManna’s picture on it and they don’t even put Alex’ name on the poster.
“LaManna only fought one solid guy and that was Jamaal Davis in his last fight (Aug. 23) and Davis didn’t really come to fight that night. If he had, he would have won.”
In his last fight Aug. 23 at Bally’s, Sanchez got off the floor in the first round and fought unbeaten Ismael Garcia, of Atlantic City, NJ, to a standstill the rest of the way before losing a six-round decision.
The combined record of Sanchez’ 10 opponents was 42-22-1. Five of the 10 were unbeaten at fight time. Among then is world-rated Tony Harrison, of Detroit, currently 18-0.
The combined record of LaManna’s 15 victims is 74-65-3 and he comes into this fight off the two biggest wins of his career, a pair of eight-round decisions over Ahsandi Gibbs and Davis.
The Dec. 13 fight will be LaManna’s first in Philadelphia. Sanchez has boxed there once previously, a four-round decision earlier this year over Juan Aguirre, of Jacksonville, FL.

ABOUT DECEMBER 13

The Verdejo-Ouazghari and Hart-Miller fights top an eight-bout card at the 2300 Arena. First fight is 6.45 pm. Tickets priced at $50 and $75 are on sale at the offices of Peltz Boxing (215-765-0922) and at Wanamaker’s Tickets (215-568-2400). They also can be purchased on line at www.peltzboxing.com and at www.wanatix.com. UniMas will televise the Verdejo-Ouazghari fight as part of Top Rank’s Solo Boxeo Tecate series. The delayed telecast begins at midnight (EST). The card is being promoted by Top Rank, Peltz Boxing Promotions, Inc., and BAM Boxing. The 2300 Arena, formerly known as the New Alhambra, has hosted consistent professional boxing from 2004 thru 2012 when it was later known as the Asylum Arena. Boxing cards there have been televised by ESPN 2, CN8, Univision and the NBC Sports Network. Fighters who have boxed there include Danny Garcia, Bronco McKart, Omar Sheika, Demetrius Hopkins, Mike Jones, Teon Kennedy, Bryant Jennings, Gabriel Rosado, Jesus Soto-Karass, Ronald Cruz, Israel “Pito” Cardona, Derek Ennis, Steve Cunningham and Edner Cherry.

Fres Oquendo tested positive after WBA heavyweight championship against Ruslan Chagaev in Grozny

As confirmed by the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) and the World Boxing Association (WBA) ring veteran Fres Oquendo tested positive for the prohibited substances tamoxifin and anastrozole at the mandatory test taken after his WBA world heavyweight championship fight against Ruslan Chagaev on July 6th in Grozny (Russia). Oquendo now faces a suspension and will have to pay back his purse according to the bout agreement.

“We will donate that money to a charitable foundation”, says promoter Timur Dugazaev. “The whole circumstances surrounding the fight were very strange. Oquendo refused to travel to Grozny and didn’t show up for the official press conference and public workout. He then asked us to postpone the fight when the ring was already set up. His positive doping test now explains this behaviour. He probably thought that he couldn’t be convicted at a later time. Finally Oquendo and his team tried to blackmail us and ask for more money. And three months after the fight – probably after being informed about the positive testing – they came up with ridiculous claims and spoke badly about Chechnyan President Ramzan Kadyrov and Andrey Ryabinsky even though both men had done their best to make sure that Oquendo and his team had a great time in Grozny. Ramzan Kadyrov and Andrey Ryabinsky are men of honor. To talk about them the way Oquendo’s team did is just disgusting and another proof for their bad character.”
Oquendo also publicly demanded a rematch – a claim that has to be dismissed, of course, after his positive doping test. “Even though it was a close and competitive fight Ruslan Chagaev won fair and square and deserved the decision win. So there has never been a reason for a rematch”, adds Dugazaev. “Now that we know that Oquendo is a cheater there will certainly not be a second chance for him. Doping has no place in professional boxing!”
Maybe the suspension will even end the career of 41-year-old Oquendo. In the meantime WBA heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev has started preparation for his first title defense of his second reign which is supposed to take place in early 2015 in Germany. Details regarding the exact date and opponent will be announced soon.

ORANGE, Calif. (Nov. 23, 2014) – Thompson Boxing Promotions wrapped up its promotional year with a stellar night of boxing highlighted by knockouts in the main and co-main events. Welterweight Artemio Reyes (23-2, 19 KOs) of Colton, Calif. has won nine straight – eight by KO – after knocking out the durable Christopher Degollado (10-4, 8 KOs) of Monterrey, Mex. in the seventh round.

“I knew my punches were having an impact and I felt him getting tired as the rounds wore on,” said the 28-year-old Reyes. “It was only a matter of time before I finished him off.”

Reyes, who has become accustomed to knocking out opponents inside of three rounds, had to work a little harder for this KO win. Degollado had a solid defense and it took Reyes a few rounds to figure out his weaknesses. Reyes pressured Degollado into corners and transitioned well from counter punching to attacking on the inside.

In the co-main event, Jose Roman (19-1-1, 13 KOs), one of the rising talents in the lightweight division, took home his fourth win of the year in the “Locked n’ Loaded” 8-round co-main event. Roman knocked out Jose Luis Ramirez, Jr. (7-2-1, 4 KOs) of Tijuana, Mex. in the third round with a right hook to the head. In the previous round, Roman connected with a left hook that dropped and dazed Ramirez.

“It was important for me to close out the year with a solid win and I did just that,” said the 26-year-old Roman, who lives in Garden Grove, Calif. and trains with Joel Diaz. “I look forward to staying busy next year and can’t wait to fight on another Thompson Boxing card.”

In a fight that was largely fought on the inside, top bantamweight prospect Carlos Carlson (16-0, 10 KOs) of Tijuana, Mex. extended his unbeaten streak by outpointing the veteran Miguel Tamayo (15-10-2, 13 KOs) of Ciudad Obregon, Mex. Scores read 60-54, 59-55, 60-54. Carlson is managed by Roberto Sandoval and trained by Danny Zamora.

Super featherweight Erick Ituarte (9-1-1, 2 KOs) of Santa Ana, Calif. is not known for his overwhelming force, but on Friday night, he peppered Jesus Angulo (3-6, 2 KOs) of Nuevo Laredo, Mex. with a constant flow of heavy punches. Ituarte routinely backed up the taller Angulo and closed the book in the third round with a series of combinations that proved too much for the Mexican-native.

The night started with an excellent back and forth affair between heavyweights Siala Siligoa (2-2, 2 KOs) of San Bernardino, Calif. and Rodney Hernandez (3-1, 2 KOs) of Modesto, Calif. Siligoa, also known as “Mighty Mo,” got the action started early in round one with an overhand right that put Hernandez on his wallet.

Hernandez, however, worked his way back into the fight by pushing forward and landing quality lead rights and left hooks. The judges awarded Hernandez with a unanimous decision win with scores of 38-37 all around.

“Locked n’ Loaded” was presented by Thompson Boxing Promotions and sponsored by Lucas Oil, in association with KCAL 96.7 FM Rocks!, KOLA 99.9 FM, and LATV Networks.

Bellew looking to even the score against Cleverly this Saturday on AWE

HBO Boxing After Dark Weigh-In: Adonis Stevenson vs Tony Bellew
San Diego, CA – November 21, 2014 – On Saturday afternoon, November 22, one of the biggest days in boxing will take place as an eagerly anticipated rematch between former Light Heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (28-1, 14 KO’s)
and former two-time championship challenger Tony Bellew (22-2-1, 14 KO’s) airs exclusively and live on
AWE.

The 12-round Cruiserweight World Title eliminator bout will originate from the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England and will be broadcast LIVE in the United States on AWE-A Wealth of Entertainment at 1 PM ET / 10 PM PT

On October 15, 2011, Tony Bellew got that match he was clamoring for and that was a world title opportunity with then WBO Light Heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly. It was a bout that was in the making for sometime as they were both undefeated & Cleverly had what Bellew wanted. It turned personal and the grudge match saw Cleverly eek out a majority decision on a grueling affair.

This Saturday, both who have both since suffered setbacks, will meet again but this time they will compete as Cruiserweights with much on the line.

“It felt like my world had just ended,” said Bellew. “You’ve been in a hard fight, you’ve taken a lot of punches and thrown a lot of punches. It hits you hard. I thought I had done enough and I knew it was a really close fight. We were all waiting for him to announce it, it seemed to take an age and when the referee announced him as the winner, he went mad, jumping around the ring,”said Bellew.

“I don’t class it as a loss, I really don’t I look at my career and I believe I’ve been beaten by one man and that is Adonis Stevenson. I believe at worst in that fight with Cleverly you can give it a draw. If you are going to score that fight and say who the better boxer of these two is, it’s me. If you’re going to ask who landed the harder shots in the fight, it’s me. OK, you can say he wins rounds on little bit of extra work rate, especially the last two, but a 12 round fight isn’t about the last two rounds. Over the whole 12 rounds I was the better boxer, I won six rounds clearly and you can’t deny me that.” continued Bellew of the first encounter.

Because of the rivalry, it was a natural when both moved to Cruisweweight that hostilities would be renewed.

“I’m not really that bothered to tell the truth,” said Bellew. “It’s great boxing in front of your home fans, it’s a fantastic feeling, a buzz. I’ve had both sides of the spectrum. I’ve had 10,000 against me and 10,000 with me and let me tell you, it’s a lot better when you have them on your side. They can help spur you on through the dark moments, because when a fight gets hard, there is going to be dark moments, when you need to show what you are about and what you have got in the tank, they can drag it out of you.”

On July 12, Both Cleverly and Bellew shared a bill and scored knockout wins to set this rematch. After Bellew’s win, he tried to fire the first verbal and psychological at Cleverly.

“I walked over and I gave him a piece of my mind,” said Bellew. “Does he really believe you were a World champion. I don’t think he does. The eyes don’t lie. I have looked into the eyes of a true World champion in Adonis Stevenson. He looks ruthless, looks deadly and looks vicious. Looking into Stevenson’s eyes and looking into Cleverly’s eyes, there’s only one World champion there, and I am not fighting him tonight.”

“He is mentally weak. Any man that is talking about retirement shouldn’t be fighting any more, simple as that. He’s fragile and he’s hiding a lot from people. I win the fight because I am too strong, too powerful and I am technically better than him in everything he does.”

Two co-main events feature two WBA world title bouts. Scott Quigg will make the 5th defense of the WBA Super Bantamweight title against Hidenori Otake of Tokyo, Japan. Also co-featured is two-time Bantamweight champion Jamie McDonnell defending the WBA Bantamweight title against Javier Chacon of Argentina..

If that is not enough, then boxing fans are in for a terrific treat as two-time world title challenger George Groves takes on American Denis Douglin. The card also features undefeated British prospect Callum Smith as he sets to battle former world title challenger Nikola Sjekloca. Heavyweight and undefeated 2012 Olympic Gold Medal winner Anthony Joshua takes on 64-fight veteran Michael Sprott.

Undefeated Lightweight Sultahn Staton to take on Ramon Ellis this Saturday night at the Valley Forge Casino Resort

VALLEY FORGE, PA (November 21, 2014)–Tomorrow night at the Valley Forge Casino Resort, undefeated Lightweight Sultahn Staton will take on veteran Ramon Ellis as part of a big card promoted by Kings Promotions.

In the main event, Dennis Hasson (16-1, 6 KO’s) will take on Taneal Goyco (6-8-1, 3 KO’s) in a battle of Philadelphia based Light Heavyweights.

Staton of Philadelphia has a record of 3-0 with two knockouts and he has been very impressive by using an aggressive crowd pleasing style.

“I have had a good training camp, “said the 23 year-old Staton.

In Ellis, he is facing a solid veteran and despite his record 4-13-2 with two knockouts, Ellis is one of those fighters who should have more to show as he been on the wrong end of some bad decisions and has also faced seven undefeated fighters and has wins over Tim Witherspoon Jr. (8-2-1) and Luis Castro (3-0).

“I know that Ellis is taller and longer. I see he has a good left hook but we will be ok if we just box and stay on out toes.”

Staton is looking to improve on his performance of his last fight when he went the distance for the first time as he scored a 4-round unanimous decision over Mike Erosa on February 7.

“My last fight was not a good performance. I know because I am still undefeated that people are gunning for me. I have been off for nine months because nobody will fight me but now since I didnt have a great performance, we got an opponent. As soon as people see you slip, I guess they think the can jump on an opportunity.”

I know that come November 22, I will still be undefeated and give a good show for the crowd.

6 Round Bouts:

David Grayton (9-0, 8 KO’s) will take on an opponent to be announced in a Welterweight bout.

In Four Round Bouts:

BOXING LEGEND PACQUIAO LABELS ALGIERI ‘MOST DANGEROUS OPPONENT OF HIS CAREER’ AHEAD OF THRILLING BOXNATION CLASH THIS WEEKEND

Pacquiao_Algieri_WSJ_140905_002a
LONDON (Nov 21) – Boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao believes that Chris Algieri is the most dangerous opponent of his career.

The all-action Filipino has shared the ring with some of the biggest names in world boxing including the likes of Oscar De La Hoya and Miguel Cotto but now faces what he thinks is his trickiest test in the unbeaten Algieri, live on BoxNation this weekend.

A factor in the New Yorker’s favour leading up to the fight has been his notable size advantage and WBO welterweight world champion Pacquiao is of the belief that combined with Algieri’s slick skills it will prove a difficult task when they do battle.

“Chris Algieri poses many puzzles for me to solve. In terms of his height and reach, only Antonio Margarito surpasses him in the scope of opponents I have faced. Algieri is also the most scientific, fluid and fittest fighter I have ever opposed,” said Pacquiao.

“All of those factors, plus he is five years younger than me, make him the most dangerous opponent of my career.

“To me, boxing is a lot like chess. You don’t just move a piece and wait for your opponent to respond, you have to see the board and think 10 to 12 moves ahead and anticipate the variables your opponent may counter with. Algieri does that and he does that very well,” he said.

Prior to this summer the 30-year-old Algieri was unknown amongst the wider boxing community but his unexpected win over WBO light-welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov made everyone sit up and take notice.

Going into the fight he was expected to put up little resistance against his feared opponent but upset the odds by scoring a gallant points victory, his courageous performance something which did not go unnoticed by the great Pacquiao.

“If you look at his recent fights – against Mike Arnaoutis, Emanuel Taylor and Ruslan Provodnikov – each victory for him was considered an upset.

“Yet Algieri never considered himself an underdog, he went into each fight confident and with the right game plan and no matter what happened in the ring, he was disciplined enough to stay with that game plan. And it worked. He outfought them and out-thought them,” said a wary Pacquiao.

“Algieri’s reach and height will require me to work on closing the distance with him in the ring and I will need my speed more than ever to be able to score damaging blows to him while avoiding his own counters.

“I watched him fight Provodnikov and he fought the perfect fight against him. But I do not intend to fight Algieri’s fight. I intend on fighting my fight and more importantly, making him fight my fight,” he said.

Once again the odds are heavily stacked against the former world champion kickboxer Algieri but overcoming adversity is something which he thrives on and puts down to his mental ability.

“My 10th pro bout against Julius Edmonds I went into the fight with a sore right hand and then broke my left hand in the second round. Finding a way to win has always been a major part of my style and strategy,” said Algieri.

“I didn’t even tell my coaches I was injured until after the fight. I finished the fight with a fourth round knockout and that truly was one of the biggest obstacles if not the biggest I have ever had to overcome.

“And let’s not forget my previous fight against Ruslan Provodnikov. I made a mistake in the first round and I paid for it. I was forced to pay the price and fight the remainder of the fight with a badly swollen eye. But, I still found a way to win.

“Sticking to the game plan, and staying focused in times of adversity, that’s what separates me from other fighters. My mental make-up and my mental strength has always been the difference in my fights, and that’s what will propel me to victory against Pacquiao,” he said.

Pacquiao vs. Algieri is live on BoxNation (Sky 437/490HD, Virgin 546, TalkTalk 525) this Saturday night. Visit www.boxnation.com to subscribe.

Statement from Bobby Hitz on Rumors of Donovan George Withdrawing from Pascal Bout

“We highly dispute any reports that Donovan George pulled out of this fight. It’s true that he juts had twins, but as of late this afternoon, on our end, we are still a go. We were still negotiating the final details with Interbox. Since Bute pulled out of his fight, there’s been a lot of confusion as to how to elevate this fight to the main event. A lot of people were muddying the waters on how to make this thing happen, but at the end of the day Pierre Duc, his team and I put this fight back together. We have flight arrangements, and we are scheduled to arrive in Montreal on the 30th of November, and we intend on fulfilling that. These reports have been manufactured to try to add confusion to his training camp, but I can guarantee you this: Pascal better get ready, because Donovan’s coming to knock him out.”

MIKE “HOLLYWOOD” JIMENEZ TO HEADLINE FIGHT NIGHT AT THE HORSESHOE HAMMOND

CHICAGO — November 20, 2014 — Hitz Boxing marks a milestone next Saturday, November 29th, when it closes out its fifth year of its partnership with the Horseshoe Hammond. A Chicago staple for more than twenty years, Hitz continues its commitment to local boxing, with a stacked card headlined by Mike “Hollywood” Jimenez (15-0, 10KO) vs. Ghanan knockout artist Sena Agbeko (15-1, 15KO). The North American Boxing Association (NABA) Super Middleweight Title will be on the line when the two clash.

Jimenez isn’t deterred by Agbeko’s impressive knock-out ratio. “I’m mentally and physically ready. I’m ready for war. I have had great sparring partners, and I train with some tough guys. If he thinks he’s going to look for that one big punch and knock me out, he’s going to be disappointed. It’s going to be a short night for him. I’m going to get in there, kick this guy’s butt, and go home with the victory.”

Jimenez, who got a late start in the sport at the age of 20 after playing college football, works full time, and is a member of the Local 63 Iron Workers union in Chicago. “Chicago is a strong union town. The guys from my union are like my brothers,” said Jimenez of the union’s support. “People I haven’t even met come out to support me, and I have people wishing me luck at job sites all the time. They know I work my tail off, and represent Chicago to the fullest.”

In the co-main event, Genaro Mendez (8-2-1, 5KO) faces Nashville’s DeMarcus Rogers (4-2-1, 1KO). Mendez is coming off a fourth round knockout win over Alfred Hall in August, in a fight where his propensity for pressuring his opponent caught the eye of reporters. Rogers, who had an extensive amateur career with over eighty fights, also scored a knock-out win in his last bout.

Fight Night at Horseshoe Hammond features a stacked card, packed with Chicago talent. Local fighters Ricardo Chavez (4-1, 3KO) and Nick Asberry are featured in separate heavyweight bouts. Recent Cameron Dunkin signees Fidel Navarette (6-0-2, 3KO) and Jose Arambula (7-0, 3KO) will be in the ring. Navarette will fight for the fifth time in 2014 against a to-be-named opponent. Samuel “The Russian Concussion” Horowitz (1-0, 1KO), Jose Arambula (7-0, 3KO), Ramiro Carillo (5-0, 3KO), Ricardo Chavez (4-1, 3KO), Frank Scalise (9-1, 9KO), Joey Hefferle (3-0, 3KO) and Will Coix (4-0, 4KO) round out the card in separate bouts.

Detroit’s Raeese Aleem (4-0, 2KO), also a member of the Dunkin stable of fighters, makes his much-anticipated ring return as well, facing Posen, IL’s Carl Currie (0-1, 0KO).

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with the Horseshoe Hammond for the fifteenth time,” said promoter Bobby Hitz. “It’s a great venue, not a bad seat in the house. It’s a great place to showcase the best fights that Chicago has to offer. We’re looking forward to closing out 2014 with another solid card.”

Tickets are priced $25, $40 and $90, and are available at www.hitzboxing.com or at any Ticketmaster outlet. Fans must be 21 and older to attend.

THE FINAL WORD — FREDDIE ROACH and TIM LANE TRAINERS MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL Thursday, November 20

MACAO, CHINA (November 21, 2014) – FREDDIE ROACH and TIM LANE, trainers for undefeated World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior welterweight champion CHRIS ALGIERI and Fighter of the Decade Congressman and defending WBO welterweight champion MANNY “Pacman” PACQUIAO, respectively, hosted an international Media Conference Call on Thursday, from The Venetian Macao. Algieri (20-0, 8 KOs), from Huntington, NY on Long Island, has Bachelor of Science degree in Health Care Management, a Masters degree in Clinical Nutrition and a Ph.D. in Upsets Inside the Ring. Aspiring, to attend medical school when he concludes his boxing career, Algieri has become sports Horatio Algieri story! All of New York is riveted to its only world champion as he prepares to battle Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs), the lone congressional representative from the Sarangani Province of the Philippines, and boxing’s only eight-division world champion.

TIM LANE

It’s been quite a ride for you and Chris since beating Ruslan Provodnikov and becoming a world champion. What are your feelings headed into Saturday night’s fight?

TIM LANE: Looking forward to this weekend, it’s going to be a great weekend, Chris is in great shape, and yes we are looking forward to bringing that belt back to New York.

Adjusting to time change?

TIM LANE: It’s been great. Chris and I came over here for the world tour and we learned a couple things about what time we were going to fly and what we were going to eat and how we were going to do out workouts and we adjusted perfectly. It took Chris about one day to get on the time zone and it took me about two days. I couldn’t imagine it going any better or for Chris to be in a better spot considering the circumstances we are in right now.

Have there been any surprises during the promotion?

TIM LANE: What sticks out in my mind is how nice and generous people have been to us when it comes to the staff here at The Venetian, both in Las Vegas and Macao, to Top Rank to Star Boxing to Banner Promotions. The people here have been amazing – the respect and the love they have shown. Even the Filipino fans – we go to breakfast every morning and there have been mobs of people from all walks of life have shown so much love and that has surprised me. I thought we were coming to a battle-ground and were going to have to be kind of tough, and I would prefer not to be tough, I would prefer that when the bell rings we would take care of business and that outside of that we can all be human beings. It has been wonderful and that has been surprising to me.

How do you prevent being overwhelmed by the moment?

TIM LANE: Chris has prepared and dreamt about this night for many, many years and he has risen to the occasion of every event that he has been in and the greatest thing about Chris Algieri is the better his competition and the better his opposition, the better he is. He always rises to the occasion. What he did to Ruslan, he did it with one eye. I thought he would have a flawless victory against Ruslan. I did not think Ruslan would be our toughest challenge, but Chris ended up getting hit and hurt in the first round, and when we were offered the Manny Pacquiao fight, I believe that his is not as tough a fight as Ruslan. Styles make fights and Manny Pacquiao, being a lefty and what he brings to the table, I do not feel that to be as challenging as Ruslan. I feel that Chris will dominate Pacquiao more so than he did Ruslan — with two eyes.

You actually think Pacquiao is an easier fight than Provodnikov?

TIM LANE: Maybe not an easier fight, but a more simple fight. It is a simpler game plan for me to get across to Chris but the biggest thing is and people don’t know this, but Chris Algieri started his war in the ring with a lefty. He does better with lefties than he does with righties. I have been able to do certain things that have come out in his style against righties but against lefties, he is a totally different fighter.

Freddie is talking about a first round KO…

TIM LANE: And you know what? If I was in Freddie’s shoes I would be talking a lot too, because he knows what the outcome of the fight is going to be and he’s got to blow a bunch of smoke and I feel for them. I love Manny Pacquiao but he’s not beating Chris and I think Freddie is aware of that and that’s why he’s barking.

How is Pacquiao different than other lefties?

TIM LANE: Chris gained good experience in sparring with Zab Judah because he is very fast and arguably the best three or four round fighters ever in the world. You see what he did with Floyd Mayweather in the first four rounds. It’s all getting used to guys coming at you from that angle, but there’s no one out there that does it the way that Manny does it with his footwork and angles before he throws, but footwork and angles work when you are hitting a heavy bag and it looks really, really good and really, really fast and when you have zombies in front of you that don’t have footwork…you have a guy like Manny Pacquiao that looks amazing and you have a guy with footwork and is not there, those punches end up hitting air and missing and it ends up confusing him, so Manny’s footwork and his speed and his angles look good but Chris won’t be there and it’s going to be confusing for him.

What opponents of Pacquiao’s do you consider zombies (laughing)?

TIM LANE: I don’t want to disrespect anyone and say names but they were opponents that were big guys, or bigger than him, or who thought were bigger than him, that had no footwork. They were tough guys. The majority of the people in the boxing game are tough guys, because they are tough and they have come a long way, but they are the guys that don’t have footwork and stand in the middle of the ring and say ‘come on I am mucho macho.’ You can’t beat Manny Pacquiao like that. So yes, it’s the guys with no footwork.

Chris made a comparison to Margarito, who’s is about the same size as Chris, would that be a correct comparison?

TIM LANE: Good guess bro. Yes, Margarito is the guys who says, ‘come here in the middle of the ring and let’s trade, I’m tough, yeah, that’s the guy.’

Will Algieri be the ghost?

TIM LANE: Pretty much. He is going to be a master boxer. He is on top of his game. He is sharper than ever. He truly believes that this is The Chris Algieri Show, and so does his team. It’s going to be everything that should be great about boxing.

Do you foresee any surprises in the ring?

TIM LANE: I don’t know. There are a million things that could go on. I didn’t foresee Chris’ eye closing in his last fight. I don’t think about so many different variables because there are a million things to think about. I pretty much set my team up so that we can deal with anything. We have prepared Chris for any style that Manny brings. I have brought on the best cut man in the game. Whatever happens we are prepared for and anything could happen. I don’t itemize this and this and this because I would be going crazy thinking about it.

Could anything have been done better for the eye in the Provodnikov fight?

TIM LANE: I don’t know. Maybe it could have been done a little bit better but I had to make a decision that, we are coming to China, I need someone that travels well, I need someone that can deal with anything in another country. Stitch has been a good friend of mine for a long time, so when we made the fight I called him up and we had lunch and discussed a couple of things and I decided to go with him. Stitch brings a lot to the table other than being just a good cut man. He is a very vibrant human being that brings a lot of positivity to the table. I knew he would go well with the camp. I asked him if he could be in our camp every day he was in town to help wrap Chris and be part of the family and he has been just what I thought he would be as an addition to team Algieri.

This is the first time Chris has been able to train full time and not having his other jobs…

TIM LANE: The difference is he has been able to do his job. Get his rest. He and I have been able to go over his sparring and spend some good time together outside of training. Normally it’s like we train then he has to train somebody else and travel to another gym – he has to go here he has to go there. In this camp I would drive from my home in Las Vegas to The Venetian at 7 a.m. then I would stay there all day with him. We didn’t have to leave the building. Then I would go home at night. Then repeat. And on Sunday he would send me a shopping list and I would go get his food. It’s been great.

In closing…

TIM LANE: Tune in on November 22nd. Chris Algieri, the new era of boxing, is going to show you who he is. Welcome to The Chris Algieri Show.

FREDDIE ROACH

How was it training in the Philippines?

FREDDIE ROACH: It went really well. We had a great camp. Manny really buckled down the whole training camp and we are really ready for this fight.

Manny has mentioned this camp has been like old times…

FREDDIE ROACH: We brought back a lot of the old workout routines and with Justin Fortune, his old strength coach, being back on board. We went to the heavy bag a lot with really hard work. Not too much mitts where it is flashier – we got more strength. We wanted to get that fire back and start knocking people out again. It’s an old school approach. We did a lot of strength work, and heavy bag work and he is punching better than ever. He’s coming to a weight that is better for him – instead of fighting at 147 he’s fighting at 144. We are going to have our first knockout in a while.

Is there any remote chance he couldn’t get up for this fight?

FREDDIE ROACH: No not at all. He feels pressure from the public. He hasn’t knocked out anyone lately and he wants to get that fire back and he wants a knockout. It’s the first time he has ever told me that the old Manny will knock this guy out. He feels the pressure from the public that he hasn’t knocked anyone out in a while and at 144 the punch is coming back.

What does Algieri do well?

FREDDIE ROACH: He runs very well. He will run from Manny and he will have to cut the ring off and set traps. He will have to chase him down, but we will catch him.

Have the sparring partners emulated his style, as Algieri would fight?

FREDDIE ROACH: I think Postol does the best; he is a guy with a very good jab. And once he established that jab and gets going he is very difficult to deal with so he was the best sparring partner style-wise. But everyone worked out well. Mike Jones worked well for strength, if this guy wants to come at us; he took it to Manny a little bit. So whatever this guy brings to the table we are ready for.

What round is this going to end in?

FREDDIE ROACH: About three.

Is Mayweather on anyone’s mind?

FREDDIE ROACH: Sometime I tell Manny you don’t want to beat up Algieri too bad because then Mayweather is just going to run a little bit more. He is scared of us know and he is going to be more scared after we destroy this guy. But Mayweather may show some balls and step up to the plate.

Are you worried he will look too good and scare Mayweather away?

FREDDIE ROACH: Definitely. For sure.

FREDDIE ROACH: I was with Manny for seven weeks and Justin was there two weeks prior to that. Ten weeks all together. His strength and power is really there. Five, six, seven rounds a day on the heavy bag. We have been together a long time and things were getting too repetitive, so we went old school. Hard work and he responded greatly.

FREDDIE ROACH: Algieri thinks he is going to be the faster guy in there – he is going to be overwhelmed by Manny’s speed. You can’t judge Manny’s speed by watching him on TV. Once he gets in the ring, he’ll be shocked. That’s why this guy isn’t going to last more than three rounds.

Manny has not put guys away recently – do you think he will listen to you this time?

FREDDIE ROACH: I do – he knows that sportswriters and the public have questioned his power and lost his punch and so-forth. He is aware of that and not going to let this one slip by. Explosion and power is much better. I need a thicker body suit. I think it is the speed. The speed and power together means knockout and that’s what he has always done. At 147 he was fighting guys going into the ring at 160 who are more durable. He is going in at 144 and he will be faster. Next fight will be at 140 and I think he is a more natural 140 than 147.

Do you or Manny feel pressure for a KO?

FREDDIE ROACH: I don’t think it is pressure I think it is something that Manny wants. We know he can’t go out there looking for a knockout – you have to set it up and let it happen. With his speed and power and the way he is punching I believe it will happen. We are not just going out there looking to just get an early KO. We will set it up and it will be ready by design. Not by luck.

Will you be satisfied with a decision win?

FREDDIE ROACH: I am absolutely expecting a KO. He fought Ruslan Provodnikov who is a young fighter and Manny is an eight-division world champion. He is in way over his head.

FREDDIE ROACH: I want a great performance, but I want the Mayweather fight to happen, so maybe we will let it last a couple more rounds.

Does Manny talk about Floyd during training camp?

FREDDIE ROACH: We do talk about Floyd. The more time that goes by the more he talks about it. He wants the fight badly and after watching Floyd’s last couple fights he wants it even more. He wants to prove that he is the best fighter in the world and he will take that zero and give him his first one.

With a win, do you think Manny could be Fighter of the Year? It would be his second victory or the year over an undefeated world champion.

FREDDIE ROACH: I think we would need better opponents. When Manny knocks out Mayweather, he will get Fighter of the Year.

You have said you don’t think the Mayweather fight will happen…

FREDDIE ROACH: It’s been 3½ years that we have been waiting for this fight and I like challenges. He is a challenge and a good fighter but I am just so tired of people asking me if the fight is going to happen because I can’t give them a real true answer because this guy keeps running away, running away and running away. If he is the best fighter in the world, step up to the plate.

You have three fights on the PPV card. It’s going to be a busy night for you

FREDDIE ROACH: I have two great helpers and the staff works really hard. It’s a busy night – no doubt about that. Just wrapping hands will keep me really busy. My guy will be warming up Manny while the Shiming fight is going on then when it is over, I will go to the dressing room and do final warm-up with Manny. It’s part of being busy. It makes me work hard and I’ve lost about eight pounds – I was getting a little chubby – I like working and I like what I do.

What do you think about the undercard?

FREDDIE ROACH: DeMarco may steal the show. People think he’s washed up but he’s not, he punches real strong and he’s going up against a very good opponent who hasn’t looked really good in his last couple fights. People thought he may have lost those fights and got gifts but Christmas is not coming early this time, DeMarco is coming to knock you out. Shiming is fighting a guy with a great record but he’s not very well known because he is a Thai fighter, but he is a Manny Pacquiao look-a-like, but I doubt he can fight like Pacquiao and I am looking for Shiming to make a statement in this fight and get the title fight afterwards.

How was DeMarco’s camp, was it tough knowing his sister has cancer at home?

FREDDIE ROACH: We had some tough days. He would start thinking about that and almost cry. He cares about his sister and family a lot and it was very hard for him to be so far away in the Philippines and not being able to care for her and I told him that the best way to care for her is to win this fight to get her life back. I think we turned it into a positive thing and De Marco is in great shape and punching really hard and I expect big things about DeMarco.

Thought on Roy Jones the trainer?

FREDDIE ROACH: He was a great fighter, maybe he will retire soon, which I think he should and get into training and share his knowledge with the rest of the world. He was a great fighter and should be a great trainer and he knows the game and it will be a great competition no doubt about that.

Do you have advice for Jones for his training career?

FREDDIE ROACH: He knows if you work hard then good things happen. Teach them what you know. He was a very slick fighter and to have a guy like that in your corner can’t hurt. A guy like Jones is so talented they expect you to pick up things real quick but he’s got to be patient because no one was as good as he was. He can’t expect fighters to do what he wants right away. Take your time and they will learn it but not as fast as maybe you did.

What punch do you see Manny ending this fight with?

FREDDIE ROACH: His left hand. He knocked me down with it in training and I did a somersault.

How long do you foresee Manny fighting at a high level?

FREDDIE ROACH: As long as he is training like he is I don’t see an end yet. His dedication and desire to work is really unbelievable. He trains harder than any fighter I have ever known. As long s he keeps that up it is endless at this point. He stays in great shape and he trains really hard and I think this may have been the best training camp ever. His desire and focus has been really good for this training camp.

What do you think of Danny Garcia as an alternative to Mayweather?

FREDDIE ROACH: Garcia is a tough guy and one thing about Garcia is he will throw. He is a heavy puncher. He knocked out Amir Kahn. I think he is a very good opponent for Manny Pacquiao. I think Manny would box a little more and not exchange as much. It’s a fight I would like to see and a fight the fans would love to see and that’s what we want to give the people – good fights.

If Manny and Cotto both fight in the spring, will you do a joint camp?

FREDDIE ROACH: No I don’t think we are going to do a joint training camp. I need to keep those guys separate at Wild Card. They both deserve individual time. I just spoke to Cotto last night and he said December 7 he will be in my gym to get a head start on what we look forward to. Manny’s next fight will not be in China, it will be in the United States from what we see and that means training camp will be at the Wild Card. They both will be training at my gym in LA, but they will not be training together. It will be two totally separate training camps. We have done that before.

Would you want Cotto to stay at 160 or move down?

FREDDIE ROACH: There is great competition at 160. The fight we hope would be coming up is Alvarez and if he wins that fight Triple G is out there. Everybody is talking about he’s got nobody to fight. I think Miguel Cotto will kick his ass. I think he can outbox that guy. I don’t think he is unbeatable. He is a good fighter I know, but we love challenges and that’s a great challenge for us at 160.

FIGHTOGRAPHY: KEN SHAMROCK NOW LIVE ON UFCFIGHTPASS.com

The latest in UFCFIGHTPASS.com’s well-received Fightography series is now live, and features the legendary UFC Hall of Famer Ken Shamrock. In addition to listing every Shamrock fight currently in the UFC FIGHT PASS library – that’s 20 fights from the UFC, PRIDE and EliteXC spanning 15 years – the collection also features a brand-new, ahem, “no-holds barred” interview with the icon on his historic feud with Royce Gracie.

As everyone reading this email will know, Shamrock fought Gracie in the semi-final of UFC 1 in 1993 and relentless pursued the rematch until he finally got it at UFC 5 two years later.

In the Fightography interview, Shamrock says the deck was stacked against him in the first fight, and after tapping out to a choke he became “obsessed” with getting revenge over the BJJ master.

Shamrock said: “I knew Royce was the guy the promoters were highlighting; I knew he was their guy, but I didn’t think he knew much of anything all that well. I was really cocky at the time. I really thought I was the man. I was unprepared (for Royce). I thought ‘What is THIS?’”

“But, at the same time, Royce’s camp knew I was the only threat to them and they figured out ways to make it more difficult for me.”

Shamrock believes the last-minute decision to not allow him to wear his wrestling shoes in the brand-new Octagon played a significant role in his loss; he also pointed out Royce was allowed to fight wearing a gi which was used “as a weapon” in the fight.

An emotional Shamrock, now 50, blasts Royce for pulling out mid-way through the UFC 3 tournament, rather than face him, and said original UFC match-maker Art Davie forced Royce to take the “Superfight” rematch at UFC 5.

Of that infamous 30-plus minute bout, which ended in a draw because back then there were no judges or points-decisions, Shamrock said: “If we had the fight the way it was supposed to be, the way the contract was signed, no time limit, no rules, things would have been different.”

Shamrock added: “When I speak here, talking about these old fights, my old emotions come back but, really, those emotions aren’t there anymore. I respect Royce. I respect what he did, and the legacy that Royce and I left behind with that rivalry.”

JOSE PEDRAZA “I’m ready to fight Rances Barthelemy and bring home the title”

PUERTO RICO (November 20, 2014) – After his dominating performance against Philippine contender Michael Farenas (39-5-4, 31 KOs), Puerto Rican star and IBO super-featherweight champion, Jose “Sniper” Pedraza (19-0, 12 KOs), is elated that he’s become the mandatory challenger to face IBF champion Rances Barthelemy (21-0, 12 KOs).

“I’m very excited about my future and I’m very thankful to my promoters Gary Shaw, Lou DiBella and Javier Bustillo for getting me the fights I needed to become the mandatory challenger to fight for the IBF title.” said Pedraza. “I’ve been getting a lot of support from my people here in Puerto Rico and it feels great to be loved by them. I’ve already started training as I’m eager to get back in the ring. I’m ready to fight Rances Barthelemy and bring home the IBF title.”

Promoter Gary Shaw was amazed on how well Pedraza picked apart Farenas in their bout. He feels Pedraza soared from a fighter on the rise to one of the best fighters in the 130lbs division.

“Pedraza was absolutely outstanding in his fight with Farenas,” said Gary Shaw. “He looked fantastic. He has the rare ability to make adjustments in the ring against any style. He proved he can hang with the big boys. Farenas is a big puncher and Pedraza negated everything he brought to the table. Pedraza graduated from top prospect, to world title contender in one terrific performance. I believe he is the top 130 pounder in the world, and come early 2015 will prove it when he fights for the world title.”

Pedraza is promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, DiBella Entertainment and Universal Promotions.
