‘PACQUIAO IS ONE OF THE GREATEST TO HAVE EVER FOUGHT BUT I KNOW WHAT I NEED TO DO TO WIN’ – ROARS UNBEATEN ACE ALGIERI AHEAD OF BOXNATION CLASH

Pacquiao_Algieri_WSJ_140905_002a
LONDON (Nov 20) – Unbeaten ace Chris Algieri has hailed Manny Pacquiao as ‘one of the greatest fighters ever’ but says he is ready to upset the boxing legend this weekend.

The pair do battle at the Venetian Resort in Macau, live and exclusive on BoxNation, as Filipino hotshot Pacquiao puts his WBO welterweight belt up for grabs against the slick Algieri.

The New York fighter sprung to prominence this summer following his gallant victory over the feared Siberian Ruslan Provodnikov, capturing his WBO light-welterweight world title despite having been down twice in the first round.

Now, though, Algieri, who has a noticeable size advantage, admits that he is stepping in against one of the best to have ever laced up the gloves but is confident that he can shock the boxing world once again.

“I’m tall for the weight class. I am built to go in and stand in front of the man and trade bombs – why would I do that? I’ve got length, I’ve got reach, I’ve got speed; I’ve got footwork and defence, but that’s not what’s going to be the difference in this fight,” said Algieri.

“It’s not a tall guy versus a short guy – it’s Chris Algieri versus Manny Pacquiao. It’s what I bring to the table versus what he brings to the table. I think a lot of it has to do with my mental preparation and mind going into this fight as well as what we know from Manny.

“We know Manny is a living legend and a Hall of Famer for sure. He’s one of the greatest fighters that have ever lived. For me, I have to go out there and be myself. I have the talent and the tools to win this fight – I just have to go out there and perform,” he said.

One man who has not been too impressed with Algieri has been respected trainer Freddie Roach, who was in Provodnikov’s corner the night the 30-year-old upset the odds and will once again be plotting his downfall, this time with Pacquiao.

The Hall of Fame coach has labelled Algieri ‘a runner’ and been critical of the Long Island native’s skill set, something which has left the challenger unaffected.

“For one, he is wasting his time because I don’t even read those reports. So that’s the first thing. Secondly, I hear about them from other people around me and it doesn’t make a difference to me,” said Algieri.

“It seems kind of odd for him to be coming out so much and saying so many different things and everyday it’s a new thing. But like I said, I don’t read them and I don’t care about them and it doesn’t make a difference come fight night.

“I would imagine it is some kind of strategy, a kind of mental game or whatnot. Freddie’s been around a long time and maybe this has worked for him in the past but it’s not going to work on me,” he said.

The educated Algieri, who holds a master’s degree in nutrition from Stony Brook University and is looking to enrol in medical school in the future, can’t believe his sudden rise to the top, having amassed a steady 20-0 record.

“It’s zero to one hundred and that is just the nature of the game. I told my mother a joke the other day and she said ‘Chris, it’s just the way you said it would happen.’ It’s nothing, then boom!

“It is a full on sprint. It’s the nature of the business and I’m not surprised by it. I’ve been watching this sport for years and I have seen it with other fighters,” Algieri said.

“I knew my time would come I just had to stay focused and disciplined and if you work hard good things happen. I am right where I am supposed to be,” he said.

A victory over the ‘Fighter of the Decade’ in Pacquiao, however, will catapult Algieri onto a level even he couldn’t have dreamed of a year ago.

Looking ahead to his impending challenge, he has guaranteed an entertaining fight when he steps between the ropes this Saturday night.

“I feel like I fight an aggressive style – smart-aggressive. I would have been more aggressive in the Ruslan Provodnikov fight if not because of my eye early in the fight.

“Don’t be confused with my style just from that one fight, because I know a lot have only seen that one fight. I am an aggressive style boxer and I will be in there to mix it up, but it’s going to be in a smart way,” said Algieri.

“I box but I have never heard anyone say that I was a boring fighter or that they didn’t really like watching my style. I use a lot of the sweet science as they say but that sort of stuff is exciting to watch. I throw a lot of punches. I am an active fighter.

“All of my fights have been exciting, even the lopsided ones. I think I go out there and fight in the manner that works best for me getting a win and it just so happens that it’s good to watch,” he said.

Pacquiao vs. Algieri is live on BoxNation (Sky 437/490HD, Virgin 546, TalkTalk 525) this Saturday night. Visit www.boxnation.com to subscribe.

First World Title in San Diego in Nearly Ten Years and First Female World Title in the City’s History on Friday, November 21st!

(San Diego) – San Diego’s Bobby D. Presents in association with Zanfer Promotions of Tijuana are ready to present a historic night in “America’s Finest City” this Friday night at the new home for local professional boxing, the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Mission Valley. The main event will feature the first world title in San Diego in nearly ten years plus the first female world title fight in the city’s history when Tijuana’s Kenia Enriquez (12-0, 6KO) will face Ana “La Bronca” Arrazola (21-10-2, 13KO) of Mexico City for the vacant WBO flyweight title over ten rounds.

The more experienced Arrazola, a southpaw, has held the WBF title in the past and earlier this year challenged for the IBF title in Japan. The twenty-one year old Enriquez has the advantage in age which makes this a classic battle with everything on the line.

“Kenia only has twelve fights but we are more than confident that she is ready for this,” Bobby DePhilippis, president of Bobby D. Presents, stated. “She is a poised young lady inside and outside the ring. This has been an important year for her and what better way to end it but with a world title.”

In the semi-main event, local favorite Prince “Tiger” Smalls (5-0-1) will put his undefeated record on the line in his first six rounder as a pro when he faces Tijuana tough guy Jose Iñiguez (7-18, 1KO) while “The African Mexican” Mulapi Enjani (1-0) of San Diego by way of Congo comes back to get the San Diego crowd on their feet when he faces Don Jose (0-3) of Stockton, CA, in a bantamweight eight rounder. To open up the fight card, Coachella, CA’s Alberto Fundora (2-0, 1KO) trades leather with Fernando “Pantera” Najera (1-4) of Tijuana.

The Crowne Plaza Hotel is located at 2270 Hotel Circle North in San Diego. For more info or tickets, please visit SanDiegoFights.com or call (619) 420-8866. Doors open at 6:30pm with the first punch thrown at 7:30pm.

Groves and Douglin come face-to-face at final press conference

George Groves
George Groves (19-2, 15 KOs) and Denis Douglin (17-3, 10 KOs) came face-to-face for the first time at today’s press conference ahead of their WBC Silver World Super Middleweight Championship fight on Saturday night, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

There is a lot on the line for the ‘Saint’, who risks both his WBC Silver title and WBC mandatory position, when he faces the ‘Mommas Boy’ in front of a sell out crowd at the Echo Arena in Liverpool.

‘It’s great to be back boxing in Liverpool,’’ said Groves. ‘’It’s been a successful place for me in the past. On Saturday, it’s going to be a great night of boxing and I’m really looking forward to it.

‘’It’s good to finally see Denis. He seems super charged and up for the fight. I’m expecting a tough fight but I’m fully prepared for it. We’ve had a fantastic camp. I’m ready to put into practice what we’ve been working on the past year. This is when we can really step it up a notch.’’

‘’I’m truly excited for this fight,’’ said Douglin. ‘’I’ve come here to win! I didn’t come over here just to lie down as an opponent. Although I’ve only had twenty fights, I consider myself a veteran. I’ve lost against people I wasn’t meant to lose against and beaten people I wasn’t supposed to beat. I’ve seen both sides of the spectrum when it comes to boxing and I can make the adjustments to handle anything.

‘’If he comes to box, I can box him. If he steps to me and he wants to fight, we can do that too, that’s what I love to do and that’s what the fans love. Whatever he brings to the table, I’m prepared for.’’

Groves’ clash with Douglin is part of a massive bill in Liverpool topped by the rematch between bitter rivals Cleverly and Bellew. One of Groves’ arch-enemies James DeGale takes on Marco Antonio Periban over 12 rounds at Super Middleweight, while the exciting Liverpool Super Middleweight Callum Smith faces Nikola Sjekloca in a WBC World title eliminator.

There are a pair of WBA World title bouts as Bury star Scott Quigg defends his Super Bantamweight title against Hidenori Othake and Jamie McDonnell defends his Bantamweight strap against Javier Chacon.

Olympic Heavyweight hero Anthony Joshua MBE takes on Michael Sprott in a British title eliminator, Matchroom Boxing’s newest signing Bradley Saunders aims to extend his unbeaten run in the Light Welterweight division while German KO star Vincent Feigenbutz makes his UK debut.

Cleverly v Bellew II is exclusively live on Sky Sports Box Office on 22 November with George Groves, Anthony Joshua and James DeGale also on the bill. skysports.com/cleverlybellew.

JONATHAN MAICELO RETURNS TO THE RING THIS FRIDAY IN NEW YORK

NEW YORK (November 20, 2014) – Tomorrow November 21, 2014 at the Resorts World Casino in Queens, New York, Gary Shaw Productions lightweight contender, Jonathan Maicelo (21-1, 12 KOs) returns to the ring to face hard hitting veteran Hector Velasquez (56-23-3, 38 KOs). The 10-round bout promoted by New Legend Boxing Promotions will serve as the main event of the evening.

Rated WBA #7, WBO #11 and WBC #22, Maicelo looks to keep the momentum going after his hard fought victory against previously once beaten contender, Art Hovhannisyan (17-2-2, 9 KOs), a fight that took place on July 11, 2014.

Known for having great boxing skills, Maicelo feels confident in his ability to outbox Velasquez, who is notorious for having heavy hands.

“After I suffered my first loss a few fights back, I realized I needed to dedicate more on my conditioning,” said Maicelo. “With a new workout regimen implemented into my training, I feel I can go twelve rounds with ease. I’m learning how to relax more in the ring which will help me be an all around better fighter. Velasquez is a big puncher so I will have to be on my toes and do my best to outbox him. I know I’m the better fighter and I’m ready to prove it this Friday.”

“Maicelo is making a nice comeback and I can see the improvement in his stamina,” said Gary Shaw. “He was in tough with Hovhannisyan and came out on top. So I know he can continue marching up the lightweight rankings. He’s still top fifteen in two of the sanctioning organizations. He’s right there ready to challenge any of the top contenders in the division.”

BRYANT JENNINGS “I’m grinding everyday like a machine”

Bryant Jennings
PHILADELPHIA (November 20, 2014) – Gary Shaw Productions and Antonio Leonard Promotions’ undefeated heavyweight contender, Bryant “By-By” Jennings (19-0, 10 KOs) is waiting patiently as he is next in line to face the winner of Bermane Stiverne (24-1, 21 KOs) vs. Deontay Wilder (32-0, 32 KOs).

Stiverne, who is the current WBC champion, will battle Wilder at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on January 17, 2015. Jennings, who’s next in line, passed on a HBO date in November as he wanted to wait for the opportunity to fight for the prestigious WBC championship.

“I could have fought this month but my mind is set on fighting for the WBC world title,” said Jennings, “I worked my way to the top of the WBC rankings and now it’s time for me to make my mark in history. Stiverne or Wilder…I don’t care who it is, I’ll be ready to fight either one of them. My promoters, Gary Shaw, Antonio Leonard and I, are all on the same page. We want that WBC title!”

In his last two fights, both eliminations bouts, Jennings defeated former undefeated contenders, Mike Perez (20-1-1, 12 KOs) and Artur Szpilka (17-1, 12 KOs) to position himself as the mandatory challenger to fight for the WBC crown. While Stiverne and Wilder are getting ready for battle, Jennings is training everyday with dreams of becoming the heavyweight champion of the world.

“I’m grinding every day like machine,” Jennings continued. “I’m constantly visualizing myself with my hands raised in the air with the WBC strap around my waist. I’m hungry man! I know I can do this.”

Promoter Gary Shaw is excited about his Philadelphia born fighter. He feels he’s next in line to carry the torch for America as the next great heavyweight champion.

“Bryant is a very gifted athlete who is hungry to show the world that he’s an elite fighter.” said Shaw. “He’s got the athletic ability to have a long career in this sport. The heavyweight division needs a guy like Bryant to be the ambassador for American fighters. He has all the tools to become that guy.”

Jennings is managed by famed advisor James Prince, who also manages undefeated Olympian and WBA super-middleweight champion Andre Ward.

AT 49 YEARS OLD HEAVYWEIGHT CONTENDER BRONCO BILLY WRIGHT LOOKS TO MAKE HISTORY

LAS VEGAS (November 19, 2014) – Looking to make history, 49-year old heavyweight contender “Bronco” Billy Wright (45-4, 36 KOs) has his mind set on becoming the oldest heavyweight champion to ever to win a world title. Currently rated #18 by the WBC, Wright holds the LATIN AMERICAN, FECARBOX titles, and United States (USNBC) Silver title.

This Saturday November 22, 2014, Wright travels to Bolivia to face Juan Carlos Flores-Choque (14-3, 13 KOs) in a 12-round bout in which his WBC titles will be on the line. Just shy of his 50th birthday, Wright feels confident he’ll be able to accomplish his goal of one day becoming heavyweight champion of the world, breaking George Foreman’s record as the oldest man to win the prized crown.

“Over the years my team and I have learned a lot about this game,” said Billy Wright. “Together we’ve come a long way to get to this point in my career. I remember sparring with George Foreman before his fight with Michael Moore and thinking to myself how incredible it was for him to be fighting in his forty’s. Now here I am just days before my 50th birthday still fighting in 12-round bouts. I really believe if I can put together a few more wins, I can become the oldest heavyweight to win a world title.”

With twelve consecutive knockouts in a row, Wright is currently riding a 16-fight winning streak that spans from 1999 till now. In his last fight which took place on September 9, 2014, Bronco Billy defeated Julio Cuellar Cabrera (7-3, 6 KOs) by way of 1st round knockout. His upcoming bout with Flores-Choque will be his fourth bout of 2014. Wright speaks on the incredible year he’s having.

“2014 has been remarkable for all of us that make up Team Billy,” Wright continued. “I feel very strong at the tender age of 49 and while I’m beating guys almost half my age, I still feel young. I celebrate my 50th birthday on December 10th and if I win this Saturday, I’ll be fighting again before the year is done. To win a heavyweight fight at 50 years old would be an accomplishment my team and I would enjoy very much, but my ultimate goal is to win the championship of the world. I know it sounds unbelievable, but I believe in myself and the team I put around me. Together we are going to do everything in our power to make it a reality.”

Dennis Hasson to fight Taneal Goyco this Saturday Night at Valley Forge Casino Resort

VALLEY FORGE, PA (November 19, 2014)–This Saturday night, Dennis Hasson will look to get back in the win column when he takes on Taneal Goyco in the main event of a card at the Valley Forge Casino Resort.

The 30 year-old Hasson is settled in a Light Heavyweight and has a solid win over Daniel Judah to his credit. He is coming off a 4th round stoppage defeat to Tyrell Hendrix on June 27 in Las Vegas.

That fight was a shocking defeat as Hasson was rolling along undefeated until the surprise defeat to Hendrix.

“I take full responsibility for that defeat. I did not have to take that fight. I just went in there and lost,” said a candid Hasson.

“I have come full circle as I am back with my original team of Buddy Osborne and Johnny Rivera and we are back to basics and we will see the best results.”

In Goyco, Hason is fighting another man from Philadelphia who comes to fight.

“I know Goyco is a good fight for us. Like myself, He is coming off a loss. We are both from Philadelphia and this will be a good fight for the fans. I am looking to put on a good show and come out victorious.”

Hasson isn’t letting the set back bother him as he feels that the Hendrix fight was just a small bump in the road.

“Some of the greatest fighters have suffered glitches in their career and they have gone on to have Hall of Fame careers. I will not let that hold me back from going forward. That loss will not break me. I have learned and will come back stronger”

Despite having a record of 6-8-1 with three knockouts, Goyco has wins over Dennis Morris (1-0), Frankie Filippone (14-2-1) and Jeremy Trussell (8-0).

Nathan Cleverly seeks his own redemption this Saturday against Bellew

Nathan Cleverly
San Diego, CA – November 18, 2914 – On Saturday afternoon, November 22, one of the biggest days in boxing will take place as an eagerly anticipated rematch between former Light Heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (28-1, 14 KO’s) and former two-time championship challenger Tony Bellew (22-2-1, 14 KO’s) airs exclusively and live on AWE.

The 12-round Cruiserweight World Title eliminator bout will originate from the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England and will be broadcast LIVE in the United States on AWE-A Wealth of Entertainment at 1 PM ET / 10 PM PT

Although Cleverly one the first bout, he knows that not only does he need a win but knows that it will be a crowd pleasing affair.

“We have history, it’s a grudge match,”said Cleverly. “The first fight was an excellent fight and the reason why this rematch is happening is not only is it a rivalry and we don’t like each other, but the first fight was an excellent battle. I won the fight, got the decision, but it was a close fight, got the decision, but it was a close fight so people want to see it again. I want to fight him again, because I want to silence him once and for all.”

That animosity stems up from before their first battle when at a press conference, Cleverly thought Bellew became disrespectful to the then WBO Light Heavyweight champion.

“We just clash,” said Cleverly. “At the end of the day, I am a winner and in the first press conference I was World champion and he came in with this attitude. I was sat at the table and he kind of looked at me and said something and he got under my skin straight away.

“That fight was set up as a big fight. The press conferences, the clash, the grudge match, it was a ferocious build-up. More importantly though, we both delivered on the night. I delivered a good solid performance and Tony Bellew gave it everything. He threw the kitchen sink at me that night, that was his big chance and it made for an excellent fight.

“I had the phone call saying; ‘Nathan, you’re fighting Tony Bellew on October 15’, and I remember thinking ‘that’s only seven weeks away’. So the build-up wasn’t ideal, I want at least ten weeks for a proper training camp. It is difficult going into a fight knowing that you haven’t had a proper camp but I got on with it, I didn’t make excuses at the time, I just said to myself: ‘I’m World champion, let’s defend my title in his hometown’. That’s what a proper champion does and that is what I did.

Cleverly thought he was through with his Light Heavyweight rival, but when both suffered knockout losses (Cleverly losing his title to Sergey Kovaelv while Bellew was stopped by WBC champion Adonis Stevenson) both decided to move up in weight.

“At the final bell when we embraced he said: ‘Forget doing that again, forget doing that again’. I gave him the hardest fight he’s ever had to go through. It was a tough fight, he was on his last legs – he was spent. He says he had weight issues and he was drained but he gave everything that night, he had nothing else in the tank.”

Cleverly’s personal redemption is that he is looking to get back on top. This time in the Cruiserweight division and a second win over his rival will go a long way into that coming to fruition.

“There’s an incredible amount riding on this fight,” said Cleverly. “It’s personal between us but I know what will happen to the winner. This fight is a gateway to a World title shot and the chance for me to make that two-weight World champion dream a reality. That rarely happens in boxing, only the best fighters achieve it so for me to go on and do it, that’s what dreams are made of.

“I can’t imagine myself losing and it hasn’t crossed my mind because I am so confident of winning. I cannot allow this guy to beat me.

“I wouldn’t say I hate him. He hates me, there’s no doubt about that. He hates me because I’ve beaten him and I’ve been a World champion.”

Because of the first win, Cleverly has the confidence that makes him a favorite to make it two in a row against Bellew.

“I will win this fight because I am all round a better fighter than him. I believe I am a faster puncher than Tony Bellew, I have more energy, more speed and more stamina. Yes, maybe I don’t have the one-punch KO power he carries, but he’s hit me clean with that at Light Heavyweight where he was taking people out, and it didn’t bother me. He may punch harder at Cruiserweight but I’m bigger and stronger. My chin is better, there’s more energy in my legs. So if I can gather the speed, the stamina, the energy levels, the punch variety and the combinations and bring it all up to Cruiserweight, it will be too much for this guy.”

Two co-main events feature two WBA world title bouts. Scott Quigg will make the 5th defense of the WBA Super Bantamweight title against Hidenori Otake of Tokyo, Japan. Also co-featured is two-time Bantamweight champion Jamie McDonnell defending the WBA Bantamweight title against Javier Chacon of Argentina..

If that is not enough, then boxing fans are in for a terrific treat as two-time world title challenger George Groves takes on American Denis Douglin. The card also features undefeated British prospect Callum Smith as he sets to battle former world title challenger Nikola Sjekloca. Heavyweight and undefeated 2012 Olympic Gold Medal winner Anthony Joshua takes on 64-fight veteran Michael Sprott.

Boxing fans can enjoy this amazing card on AWE available on AT&T U-Verse, ch 147 and 1147 in HD, Verizon FiOS TV, ch 169 and 669 in HD, along numerous regional cable providers across the nation. Please check www.awetv.com for boxing updates.

ON THE COMEBACK TRAIL, RONALD HEARNS TOPS HOLIDAY BOXING BASH UNDERCARD IN CHICAGO, ON FRIDAY, DECEMBER 12

Comebacking former world title challenger and son of a legend, Ronald “The Chosen One” Hearns (26-5, 20 KOs) will appear in a featured six- to eight-round middleweight bout of Warrior’s Boxing’s mammoth 14-fight “Holiday Boxing Bash” event at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago on Friday, December 12.

Also appearing in 10-round showcase bouts that night will be undefeated Hudsonville, Michigan, cruiserweight Jordan Shimmell (17-0, 14 KOs), Fort Washington, Maryland, light heavyweight Thomas “Top Dog” Williams Jr. (17-1, 12 KOs), and unbeaten Toledo, Ohio, lightweight Robert “E Bunny” Easter (11-0, 9 KOs).

The quartet of established contenders will top the “Holiday Boxing Bash” undercard, headlined by undefeated former amateur star Rau’shee Warren (12-0, 3 KOs) going 10 rounds in the bantamweight division, as well as popular Chicago up-and-comer Jose F. Quezada (4-0, 3 KOs) in a lightweight six-rounder; Warsaw, Poland’s Patryk Szymanski (11-0, 6 KOs) in a junior middleweight eight-rounder; and Aurora, Illinois super lightweight Eddie Ramirez (6-0, 4 KOs) in a six-rounder.

Tickets for “Holiday Boxing Bash” start at $31 and are available at Ticketmaster outlets, Ticketmaster.com or call: 1-800-745-3000, the Warriors Offices: 312-622-7668 or the UIC Pavilion Box Office: 312-413-5740, or visit the UIC Box Office (Thursday or Friday 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM). They can also be purchased the night of the event.

Also on the undercard will be a number of undefeated Midwest-based contenders, including a four-round welterweight bout featuring Cincinnati, Ohio’s Jamotay Clark (3-0, 3 KOs); a six-round lightweight bout featuring Cleveland, Ohio’s Raynell Williams (5-0, 3 KOs); an eight-round lightweight bout featuring Cincinnati’s Jamel Herring (9-0, 6 KOs); and an eight-round junior middleweight bout featuring Minneapolis’s Javontae Starks (10-0, 7 KOs).

35-year-old Ronald Hearns was forbidden from the boxing ring until completing his education, a degree in Criminal Justice from American University. Once completed, however, “The Hitman” got behind his son’s boxing aspirations. The younger Hearns went 9-1 as an amateur and managed to win the 2004 National Middleweight Championship before turning pro. Hearns won his first 21 consecutive fights and challenged, unsuccessfully, for the WBA Super World Middleweight title against Felix Sturm in 2011.

26-year-old Jordan Shimmell, born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, started boxing at 8 years old and enjoyed a heavily decorated amateur career. Among many junior and senior titles, Shimmell won the World Golden Gloves Championships in 2007 and was the runner-up in the 2006 National Golden Gloves, as well as the 201-pound champion in the 2007 Midwestern Trials. In 2009, he became the first heavyweight in Michigan Golden Gloves history to win four titles. He is only the sixth heavyweight to ever win both the National Golden Gloves and USA Boxing National Championships in the same year. As a professional, Shimmell has been flawless, thus far, chopping down all but three of his first 17 opponents.

27-year-old Thomas Williams Jr. is from Ft. Washington, Maryland. He turned professional in 2010 after a strong amateur career. He is the son of former heavyweight contender Thomas “Top Dawg” Williams Sr. In 2014, Wililams won the NABO Light Heavyweight Title with a wild first-round stoppage over Cornelius White.

As an amateur, 23-year-old Robert Easter was a 2012 U.S. Olympic Team alternate and 2012 Final Qualifier for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials. He was also the 2010 and 2011 National Golden Gloves Bronze Medalist. In the pro ranks, Easter, who is co-trained by his father, has stopped nine of his first 11 opponents.

Opponents for all will be announced shortly.

On fight night, doors open at 5:30 PM and the first fight is at 6:00 PM. The UIC Pavilion is located at 525 S Racine Avenue in Chicago. For more information and updates, visit www.warriorsboxing.com

Joel Diaz on Jose Roman: “He’s Getting Better Everyday” – Roman Looks for Fourth Win of 2014 this Friday

ORANGE, Calif. (Nov. 18, 2014) – It’s been a busy year for top lightweight prospect Jose Roman. He earned a knockout win in April, and the following month captured a vacant regional belt. Roman followed that victory with a successful title defense in September. On Friday, he looks for his fourth quality win of the year against Jose Luis Ramirez (7-1-1, 4 KOs) of Tijuana, Mex.

Roman vs. Luis is the 8-round co-main event of Thompson Boxing Promotions “Locked n’ Loaded” show taking place at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, Calif., Friday, Nov. 21.

By all accounts, Roman (18-1-1, 12 KOs) is having one of the best years of his young career. A boxing free agent in 2013, Roman signed with Thompson Boxing Promotions and debuted with a win last November. Since then, he’s won four in a row and has been learning from one of the top trainers in the game – Joel Diaz.

“He’s bringing a new style in that he’s more active, he’s letting his combinations go,” Diaz said. “When we started working with him about a year ago, he was throwing one or two punches at a time, now he’s flowing with combinations.

“He used to stay behind, now he’s pushing the tempo. His footwork and defense has improved. He’s getting better everyday. The more time we spend with him, the more he learns.”

“On top of being active, Joel wants me to use my length and height to help control fights,” said the 26-year-old Roman. “I can definitely see the improvements. I’m starting to become a more complete boxer.”

For an exclusive look at the Roman training camp, please click here, or on the graphic above.

Tickets for “Locked n’ Loaded” are priced at $40, $60, and $100, and are on sale now and can be purchased by calling (714) 935-0900, or online at ThompsonBoxing.com.

Kalenga targeting Lebedev

CORK, Ireland (Nov. 18, 2014) – Fresh off of his devastating 12th round knockout of previously undefeated No. 2 contender “Dangerous” Denton Daley (12-1) this past Saturday night, as the official WBA mandatory challenger, Interim World Boxing Association (WBA) cruiserweight champion Youri “El Toro” Kalenga (21-1, 14 KOs), has set his sights next on WBA “regular” champion Denis Lebedev (26-2, 20 KOs) with a loftier goal to eventually unify all the world titles.

“I want to fight Lebedev next and my promoter, Michael King (King Sports Enterprises), will bring that fight to Los Angeles,” Kalenga said. “Once I beat Lebedev, I will take on the other world champions – (IBF) Yoan Pablo Hernandez, (WBO) Marco Huck or (WBC) Grigory Drodz. Give me any and all of them!”

The 26-year-old Kalenga, the Congolese fighter who lives in France, captured the Interim WBA title this past June in Monte Carlo, taking a 12-round split decision (116-112, 115-113, 113-115) over Mateusz Masternak (32-1).

Last Saturday evening, in front of 6,000 partisan fans in the first world heavyweight championship bout held in Mississauga, Canada, hometown favorite Daley was dropped by Kalenga in the ninth, displaying heavy-handed combinations that bludgeoned him helplessly to the mat. Daley trailed badly on the scorecards going into the final round and the former college basketball player decided to go for broke. Kalenga finished him off, though, with two more knockdowns in the 12th round. Referee Charlie Fitch halted the action at the 1:52 mark after a three-punch explosion left Daley out on his feet before going unconscious and motionless on the canvas for several moments.

An aggressive fighter and vicious puncher, Kalenga embodies his nickname – “El Toro” – relentlessly coming forward, throwing powerful bombs from all different angles. His style promises to make him a hit with fans all over the world.

Fighting in Daley’s backyard wasn’t a problem for Kalenga, whose last seven fights have been in seven different countries – Canada, Monaco, Ireland, Spain, France, Latvia and Germany.

“I love to fight and for me it doesn’t matter where,” Kalenga noted. “If I fight in my opponent’s territory, he thinks that he has the advantage but, once every one clears out of that ring before the first bell, it is just me and him. Of course, the officials will sway towards the home fighter, so, that’s why I go for a knock out.”

Kalenga’s last five fights have been under the guidance of international boxing manager Gary Hyde (Nowhere2hyde), who also manages WBA Super & WBO super bantamweight champion Guillermo “The Jackal” Rigondeaux (14-0, 9 KOs), the two-time Cuban Olympic gold medalist; former WBO middleweight champion Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam (31-1, 18 KOs), the current IBF middleweight mandatory challenger; Georgian junior welterweight prospect Levan “The Wolf” Ghvamichava (13-1, 10 KOs) and French junior middleweight title-holder Michel Soro (23-1-1, 13 KOs.

“Youri is tough, rugged, brutal fighter and, at 26, he will be a big force at 200 pounds,” Hyde commented. “Youri has raw power in both hands and he’s also a showman. He’s going to be a huge star once U.S. fans get to see him in action. He didn’t want to leave the final outcome to the judges, hence, scoring a devastating knockout in round 12. Daley was game and he did put up a good fight.”

Kalenga is now the mandatory challenger for Lebedev, whose last fight was a second-round stoppage of Pawel Kolodziej (33-0) this past September. The Russian southpaw had lost his WBA title belt May 17, 2013 to WBA “Champion in Recess” Guillermo Jones (KO11), but Lebedev was reinstated as WBA champion after Jones failed a post-fight drug test.

Lebedev, however, has never fought outside of Russia and Europe, so for Team Kalenga to make a fight in the United States with Lebedev is a long-shot unless it goes to purse bid and King Sports Enterprises wins.

“Youri’s promoter, King Sports, has huge resources and it is very keen on delivering world title fights,” Hyde added. “I am confident that Michael King, CEO of King Sports, will put this fight with Lebedev on in California.”

Meanwhile, outside of Europe, Kalenga is the best-kept secret in the cruiserweight division, if not in all of boxing.

In the ring, like a charging bull on Red Bull, Kalenga just keeps coming forward with bad intentions. He made a major statement in his North American debut last weekend. Now, his goal is to settle the score in the WBA with Lebedev, before attempting to unify the world cruiserweight title.

Tijuana’s Kenia Enriquez will face Ana Arrazola of Mexico City for the vacant WBO Flyweight title on Friday, November 21st!

(San Diego) –
In boxing, a belt is not an accessory but an identity. Once a career is over, success is not measured in a win/loss record, money in the bank, magazine covers or possessions but in how many world titles were collected. Ever since Tijuana’s Kenia Enriquez (12-0, 6 KO) laced up the gloves at the tender age of thirteen the dream has been the same.

To capture the world title.

Things since then might have changed, different trainers, different gyms, different scenery but the goal has never changed. Tonight after two years and twelve fights as a professional Enriquez gets her first opportunity for a world title when she faces the much more experienced Ana “La Bronca” Arrazola (20-10-3, 13KO) of Mexico City for the vacant World Boxing Organization female flyweight title in a bout scheduled for ten rounds.

In Kenia’s eyes, the title comes right at the perfect time. “At first my plan was to wait until next year to look for a shot at the title but thanks to my promoter Bobby DePhilippis the opportunity is here. I am ready. My whole life has led to this. All those early mornings, running all those miles, all those afternoons in the gym, sparring, working the bags, the years of learning from my father, my last trainer Gerardo Espinoza and now Don Romulo Quirarte, it has led to this.”

ANDRE DIRRELL VS. DEREK EDWARDS IBF ELIMINATION BOUT ADDED TO SHOWTIME BOXING: SPECIAL EDITION QUADRUPLEHEADER FRIDAY, DEC. 19, LIVE ON SHOWTIME®

andre-dirrell
NEW YORK (Nov. 18, 2014) –- An IBF super middleweight elimination bout between 168-pound contender Andre “The Matrix” Dirrell (23-1, 16 KOs), of Flint, Mich., and veteran spoiler Derek “The Black Lion” Edwards (27-3-1, 14 KOs), of Las Vegas, has been confirmed as a 12-round co-feature of a SHOWTIME BOXING: Special Edition quadrupleheader on Friday, Dec. 19, live on SHOWTIME® (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) from Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec City, Quebec.

For the switch-hitting Dirrell, the elimination bout for the IBF’s No. 2 position behind No. 1 James DeGale and champion Carl Froch will be his first start on SHOWTIME and fifth overall since getting injured against then-undefeated Arthur Abraham in his second Super Six World Boxing Classic fight on SHOWTIME on March 27, 2010.

Dirrell had scored a knockdown in the fourth and was comfortably ahead of the Armenian on all scorecards heading into 11th. About a minute into the round, Dirrell slipped on a wet canvas and Abraham blatantly hit him while he was down, knocking Dirrell out cold and resulting in Abraham being disqualified. Dirrell suffered neurological issues as a result of the punch, withdrew from the tournament and was sidelined for 21 months.

A fixture on SHOWTIME before the injury, Dirrell is quickly approaching the peak form he exhibited when he entered the Super Six and was regarded by many as one of boxing’s fastest-rising contenders. Dirrell has won his last five fights, three by stoppage.

“I’m excited to be back on the fast track and I’m ready to show that this is definitely where I belong,” Dirrell said. “It takes time to move back to the top, but I like to improve myself each time I step into the gym. I almost feel like I’ve been overworking myself in the gym to prove that I’m back.

“But I feel like I’m there and ready for a title shot. And, when the time comes to prove that I’m ready, I won’t leave any doubt.’’

A 2004 U.S. Olympic bronze medalist and the older brother of WBC Super Middleweight World Champion Anthony Dirrell, Andre scored a second-round TKO in his return to the ring on Dec. 30, 2011, but didn’t fight again until February 2013. He’s been victorious in both his fights in 2014, winning his last via fourth-round TKO over Nick Brinson on Oct. 8.

After blasting out Vladine Biosse two starts ago, the 31-year-old Dirrell called out IBF Champ Froch, who was the unbeaten WBC 168-pound champion when he dealt Dirrell his lone loss via a controversial, 12-round split-decision in his native England in the first Super Six fight for both fighters on Oct. 17, 2009.

“I know I won that fight against Froch,” Dirrell said. “I think everyone knows I won that fight. He’s the one opponent I want and the fact that he’s a world champion again is just icing on the cake. I don’t think I’ve ever been defeated and I want that title shot. Hopefully he doesn’t retire because I know the world wants to see that rematch.

“I want to fight the best at 168. I want to unify the division, but if my brother does that first then I will move up to 175. I have a lot of work to do in a little amount of time – I want to fight for about five more years – and if Anthony runs me out at 168 then I’ll go up to 175.”

Before Dirrell gets his shot at a title he must first defeat a power-punching opponent who has a knack for upsets.

“This guy may have power, but power-punchers are the best opponents for pure boxers, for slick guys like me,” Dirrell said. “That’s when I’m at my best. I’m not even looking at his power – his will and determination in the fight will be more important than his power.

“I know he’s going to be at his best when he steps in the ring on Dec. 19. He’s been in some tough fights, but I don’t think we’ve seen the best from him yet. I’m not worried about anything but getting the job done and I know I will when the time comes.”

Edwards, who once fought light heavyweight kingpin Adonis Stevenson when he was campaigning at 168 pounds, is coming off perhaps the most unlikely result of the year, a stunning 1:01, first-round knockout of previously-unbeaten, top-five ranked Badou Jack on ShoBox: The New Generation last Feb. 28 on SHOWTIME.

An extreme longshot going in, Edwards twice dropped Jack, the first coming with an overhand short right 32 seconds into the match. Moments later, Edwards registered another knockdown from a right followed by a glancing left hook. Jack stumbled to his feet but the referee had seen enough and waved off the bout.

“I’m definitely confident going in against Andre,” Edwards said. “He’s a different fighter than Jack. He had a good amateur background and fought some of the best super middleweights in the Super Six, but I see some things I can exploit in Andre. I know I’ll need to force the action on him and be the aggressor.

“A win like this would put a lot of other fighters on notice; let guys know that I can deal with the speed of a fighter like Andre and the power of a guy like Jack. And it would give me the confidence to fight anyone.’’

A “traveling underdog” who has fought from 161 to 185 pounds, Edwards, a native of Winston-Salem, N.C., is known for an ambidextrous style of fighting. Despite only six amateur bouts, he won his first 25 fights – more than 50 percent by knockout – after turning professional in October 2002.

And while he’s never faced an opponent with the speed, amateur pedigree and as naturally athletic as Dirrell, he knows that a second consecutive upset victory could forever change his life.

“I’ve never been this motivated for a fight,” said the 34-year-old Edwards. “A win like this would put a lot of things on the table, open up a lot of doors and opportunities. It’s definitely the biggest fight of my life.

“There’s no tomorrow. It’s just one night. I need to seize the moment and lay it all out on the line. This is my one big shot.”

In the main event on Dec. 19, hard-hitting WBC and The Ring Magazine Light Heavyweight World Champion Adonis “Superman” Stevenson (24-1, 20 KOs) will defend against Dmitry “The Hunter” Sukhotskiy (22-2, 16 KOs), of Russia.

Kevin Bizier (23-1, 16 KOs), of Quebec, will face the only man to defeat him, Canadian-based Romanian Jo Jo Dan (33-2, 18 KOs) in a 12-round IBF welterweight eliminator – the winner to face World Champion Kell Brook – in the second clash of a four-fight telecast. The opener will feature the SHOWTIME debut of two-time Russian Olympian Artur Beterbiev (6-0, 6 KOs), who twice beat WBO/WBA/IBF Champion Sergey Kovalev in the amateurs. Beterbiev meets fellow unbeaten Jeff Page Jr. (15-0, 10 KOs), of Andover, Kansas, in a 10-round light heavyweight scrap.

Tickets for an event presented by Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM) in association with Mise-O-Jeu and Videotron, range from $25 to $250 and are on sale in the branches of the Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec (418) 691-7211 or 1 (800) 900-7469, online at www.billeteck.com, at GYM (514) 383-0666 or Boxing Club Champion (514) 376-0980.

Masternak-Mormeck confirmed for December 5

The hotly anticipated cruiserweight clash between Mateusz Masternak (33-2, 24 KOs) and Jean Marc Mormeck (37-5, 23 KOs) has been confirmed for December 5 at the Palais des Sports in Issy-les-Moulineaux, Hauts-de-Seine, France.

Masternak, who returns following the fourth-round stoppage of Ben Nsafoah, is ready to get his world title ambitions back on track when he travels to Hauts-de-Seine to face the legendary French cruiserweight on his home turf.

‘’Mormeck is a great boxer,’’ said Masternak. ‘’He may have struggled at heavyweight but as a cruiserweight he is still very dangerous. I will need to be 100% prepared, but I believe in myself and I believe I can beat him.

‘’I have no fear of fighting in France. A boxing ring is a boxing ring no matter where in the world you are. I have fought away from home before and I know what to expect.

‘’This is a massive fight for me. If I win I will put myself back in the mix for a shot at a world title. But at the moment, I can’t risk looking past this fight. This is the most important fight of my career. It’s a fight I must win!

The Polish ‘Master’ has a tough task ahead of him. His opponent Mormeck is a former two-time world champion, who following a brief spell at heavyweight has returned to the cruiserweight division with the sole intention of reclaiming his belts.

‘’My goal is to challenge for world titles,’’ said Mormeck. ‘’This fight will pave the way for me. This is not a dream. This is a reality. I have been world champion before and I will become world champion again.

‘’I don’t study my opponents before a fight. That’s not my thing. I have watched only three rounds of Masternak, but for me that is enough. He is former European Champion with a decent record so I know he will be a tough opponent and I’m expecting a good fight.’’

‘’This is a fascinating match up,’’ said Masternak’s promoter Nisse Sauerland. ‘’There is a lot at stake for both men. It’s a fight that neither can afford to lose. Mormeck is a quality fighter. He has been in with and beaten many of the best. On December 5, Mateusz has the chance to prove he belongs at world level by beating a former world champion in his own backyard!’’

Gennady Golovkin
Venice, CA (November 17, 2014) Boxing’s fastest rising star, GENNADY “GGG” GOLOVKIN was honored by the World Boxing Council (‘WBC’) this past week being named their “Fighter of the Month” for October 2014.

He is now the mandatory challenger to full champion MIGUEL COTTO.

The knockout of Rubio improved Golovkin’s record to 31-0-0 (28KO’s), while serving as his 18th straight knockout. His knockout ratio of 90.32 is the highest among all active champions and the highest in the history of the middleweight division.

Lara and Smith were originally scheduled to meet on Friday, May 2 in Las Vegas to kick-off Cinco de Mayo Weekend, but Lara withdrew from the fight to face Canelo Alvarez on July 12 on SHOWTIME PPV®. Now, Lara is looking to reassert himself as one of the top 154-pound fighters in the world while Smith is looking to reclaim his piece of the world championship.

Also on the card is once-beaten super middleweight contender Badou Jack (17-1, 11 KOs) who will face Samuel Clarkson of Cedar Hill, Texas (12-3, 7 KOs) as he looks to climb back as a top contender in the 168-pound division. Additionally, promising undefeated junior middleweight and Mayweather Promotions rising star Chris “Sweet” Pearson (11-0, 9 KOs) of Dayton, Ohio, who will take on once-beaten Steve “Hitman” Martinez (15-1, 12 KOs), of Bronx, N.Y., in the 10-round co-feature. The matchup showcases two power-punchers who have combined to knock out 13 of their last 16 opponents.

“This is a fight I wanted and I’m happy that it’s finally going to happen,” said Lara. “We’ve had words in the past but now it’s time to see who the better fighter is. I’m the champion and Ishe Smith is going to realize that I’m on another level once he steps in the ring with me. I have a great team behind me and you’re going to see the best junior middleweight in the world in the ring on Dec. 12. Make no mistakes about it I’m coming to dominate.

“This is a fight I needed, the fight I wanted to secure my legacy in the sport of boxing,” said Smith. “There’s a chink in Lara’s armor, I’m fully ready to expose it on Dec. 12. I’ve always played the underdog role. I love when people count me out. I will become a two-time champion, crowned a champion again for the greatest city in the world Las Vegas.”

“I’m thankful for another opportunity to showcase my talents,” said Pearson. “I believe success is when opportunity meets preparation and I’m prepared. I will allow my performance to tell the rest of the story.”

“I am grateful for the opportunity to fight on SHOWTIME,” said Martinez. “Chris Pearson is a great prospect and my dream was always to fight the best in my division. This is the second go around for this fight. My respect to Mayweather Promotions who kept their word and put this fight together again.”

“I’m very excited to get back in action,” said Jack. “I’m ready to put on a fan-friendly fight in a great fight town.”

Slick southpaw Lara, 31, graduated from the renowned Cuban Amateur Boxing Program and migrated to the U.S. to pursue a professional boxing career. As a young contender, he suffered a controversial loss against Paul Williams. Since then he has established himself as one of the sport’s most prominent fighters highlighted by a TKO of Alfredo Angulo and a 12-round unanimous decision over Austin Trout on Dec. 7, 2013 which earned him the WBA Super Welterweight World Championship.

After a long career that saw him go from the world of reality television as a star on “The Contender” to competing at the top level at 154 and 160 pounds, Ishe Smith, 36, finally put it all together in 2010, beginning a four-fight winning streak that culminated in a decision win over Cornelius Bundrage for the IBF Junior Middleweight Title on Feb. 23, 2013, becoming the first native Las Vegan to ever win a world title. He subsequently lost his title on September 14, 2013 by a close split decision to the always-tough Carlos Molina. Coming off of a second-round knockout over Ryan Davis on May 2 of this year, Smith will attempt to win his second world championship in a span of less than two years.

The 31-year-old Jack was undefeated and on the verge of a world title shot before getting caught with a punch in the first round against Derek Edwards this past Feb. 28. The hard-hitting Jack, of Las Vegas by way of Stockholm, Sweden, rebounded in his next bout with a 10-round unanimous decision victory over Jason Escalera on Aug. 30. Jack is looking for another win on Dec. 12 to climb back into contention for a world title at 168 pounds as he faces Texas’ Clarkson.

Pearson, 24, compiled an outstanding record of 96-8 in the amateurs and was a 2011 U.S. National Champion at 165 pounds. A natural right-hander who fights left-handed, Pearson went 3-0 in the World Series of Fighting matches. Two of the victories were noteworthy, as they came against Olympic Games medalists (2008 gold medalist Bakhyt Sarsekbayen and 2012 bronze medalist Yamaguchi Florentino). Due to an injury, Pearson will be fighting for the first time since February, when he won a close eight-round split decision over Lanardo Tyner on ShoBox: The New Generation. Pearson, despite going down in the sixth, won the toughest test of his career by the scores of 78-73 twice and 75-76. Prior to that fight, Pearson registered a 1:44, first-round knockout over Acacio Ferreira on Dec. 6, 2013 also on ShoBox.

Martinez, 24, promoted by Star of David and Square Ring, was also an accomplished amateur, going 103-17 while winning three New York Golden Glove titles as well as a National Golden Glove title. A pro since Aug. 2009, Martinez will be seeking to establish himself as a legitimate prospect with the first significant victory of his career. Martinez is a poised fighter with a good punch. He went 11-0 at the outset of his career before suffering his lone setback on an eight-round split decision to lefty Dennis Douglin in Jan. 2012. He has gone 4-0 with three knockouts since, including a fifth-round TKO over Antonio Fernandez in his most recent start last May 15. This will be the third fight of the year for Martinez, who is making his SHOWTIME debut.

The Chris Algeri Show Opens at The Ventian Macao!

Pacquiao_Algieri_LA pc_140903_010a
MACAO, CHINA (November 16, 2014) – Just one day after arriving in Macao, undefeated World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior welterweight champion CHRIS ALGIERI resumed his promotional roadwork for the biggest fight of his professional life – challenging Fighter of the Decade and reigning WBO welterweight champion Congressman MANNY “Pacman” PACQUIAO. On a busy Sunday in the St. Mark’s Square section of the Shoppes at Venetian, Algieri made a public appearance where was greeted by hundreds of fans, posed for photos and answered questions about his career and this Saturday’s battle with Pacquiao.

“With one million square feet of retail space and over 350 stores at the Shoppes at Venetian I think I can get in my daily roadwork and my Christmas shopping, all at the same time,” said Algieri to the delight of fans and shop owners alike. “I love Macao. It was great during my last visit on the promotional tour and it is even better this time. I am glad to be able to spend more time here.

“I worked hard for over 10 weeks in the most strenuous and productive training camp of my career. I had a lot of different sparring partners, including Zab Judah, giving me different looks to prepare me for anything Pacquiao decides to throw at me. I am 110% prepared for our fight.”

When asked how a fighter could be so handsome, Algieri responded, “Every time I enter the ring I look to improve and perfect my master-boxer style of fighting — utilizing the space inside the ring to my advantage. Good defense is the key to preserving my handsomeness,” Algieri continued to the laughter and shrieks from his female fans.”

Algieri concluded his public appearance by presenting three contest winners with Algieri and Pacquiao-autographed boxing gloves and posing for photographs with them.

Algieri will resume light training on Monday morning and meet with the first wave of U.S. media to arrive in the afternoon.

Algieri (20-0, 8 KOs), from Huntington, NY on Long Island, has Bachelor of Science degree in Health Care Management, a Masters degree in Clinical Nutrition and a Ph.D. in Upsets Inside the Ring. Algieri, who aspires to attend medical school when he concludes his boxing career, has become sports’ Horatio Algieri story! All of New York is riveted to its only world champion as he prepares to battlePacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs), the lone congressional representative from the Sarangani Province of the Philippines, and boxing’s only eight-division world champion. All four of New York’s daily newspapers plus most major U.S. news outlets will be in Macao to chronicle fight week.

Jose Pedraza Wins IBF Elimination Bout against Michael Farenas

PUERTO RICO (November 14, 2014) – Tonight at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Gary Shaw Productions, DiBella Entertainment and Universal Promotions’ undefeated IBO super featherweight champion, Jose “Sniper” Pedraza (19-0, 12 KOs) dazzled his hometown fans winning an astounding 12-round unanimous decision against top Philippine contender Michael Farenas (39-5-4, 31 KOs). With the win, Pedraza moves into the mandatory position to fight IBF world champion, Rances Barthelemy (21-0, 12 KOs) as this fight was an IBF elimination bout.

Pedraza got into a grove in the early rounds and mounted a sustainable lead as he used his superior boxing skills to pick apart Farenas who was coming forward. As the fight entered the middle rounds, Pedraza continued to box and use lateral movement to win rounds. Farenas had his moments as he landed a few big power shots, but nothing that would prevent Pedraza from executing his game plan. In the championship rounds Farenas came on strong, but it was too late as Pedraza ended strong to keep his lead intact. Scorecards read 117-111, 118-110 and 116-112, all in favor for Pedraza.

“This was a great win for the people of Puerto Rico and I’m very happy with my performance,” said Jose Pedraza. “I knew if I stuck to my game plan which was to box and punch off angles I would be victorious. I want to thank my promoters Gary Shaw, Lou DiBella and Javier Bustillo for all their support. I’m ready to challenge Rances Barthelemy for the world title. I know I can bring home another championship to my countrymen in Puerto Rico.”

“Pedraza boxed beautifully tonight and proved he’s one of the best super-featherweights in the world,” said Gary Shaw. “There is no doubt in my mind he has what it takes to unify all the world titles at 130lbs. He’s now the mandatory challenger to face IBF champion Rances Barthelemy. DiBella, Bustillo and I will start working on the matchup right away. I think it’s a fantastic fight for the fans.”

Uprising Promotions Supplies Another Great Night of Fights in Long Island City

New York, N.Y. (Friday, November 14, 2014) – Ronson Frank’s Uprising Promotions, in association with Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin, returned to action on Friday night, hosting a card packed full of top prospects at the Five Star Banquet Hall in Long Island City. Uprising Promotions lightweight Wesley “El Bongocero” Ferrer (6-0, 4 KOs) kept his perfect record intact by shutting out William Walters (2-6, 1 KO) in a four round contest, but the night ended on a highly controversial note after a main event that saw Uprising Promotions featherweight Angel “El Gato” Luna (10-0-1, 7 KOs) battle Victor Serrano (3-7-1, 1 KO) over six frames.

In that feature bout, Luna showed proper ring generalship and served as the clear aggressor. From the onset of this fight, he ripped crushing shots to the body of Serrano, backing him up while throwing punches at an incredible pace. He continually swarmed his gritty opponent, delivering heavy volume with a focus on breaking down the body. Luna stalked Serrano throughout the six rounds of action, getting the better of exchanges but did eat some punches to give some punches on more than a few occasions.

While Luna did take some shots from Serrano, it was due to his own aggression, and he gave back much more than he received. When the bell rang at the conclusion of this one, the consensus among nearly everyone in attendance was that Luna had done enough to pick up his 11th professional win.

Unfortunately, the two people who saw this as a close bout were sitting ringside and had the opinions that mattered.

The first score read aloud was a 58-56 tally in favor of Luna, but the crowd was left in disbelief when the next two cards were revealed as being even at 57-57, making this fight a majority draw.

“It was a good fight, but I know that I won,” a frustrated Luna said after the bout. “It was not a draw. I know in my heart that I won this fight.”

Co-promoter Peter Quillin agreed.

“I thought Angel was in control of the fight the whole time,” he stated. “Serrano did put up a game performance, but not enough for me to say it was a draw. Unfortunately, my personal beliefs do not matter. The judges are here to do their jobs, and I am here to be a promoter. I am going to keep it on those lines.”

Ferrer came into the night with four knockouts in his previous five professional bouts, and he appeared to be headed to another early stoppage after getting off to a fast start against Walters. He immediately went to work on the body, firing hard hooks with both hands and backing up his opponent with flush follow-up shots to the head. However, Walters proved to be very game opposition, and he survived the round to send Ferrer back to his father/trainer Mateo De La Cruz in the corner.

For just the second time in his career, Ferrer would see the second frame, showing some understandable signs of attrition as the fight progressed but never relinquishing control for a moment. When all was said and done, the Brooklyn native had put in four solid rounds of work with the highly durable Walters, working well off the bend while turning and stepping into well-placed combinations.

All in all, it was a good four frames of experience for Ferrer, who cruised to a unanimous victory by shutting out Walters on all three scorecards, 40-36.

In the co-feature of the night, Brooklyn junior welterweight Scott “Bang Bang” Burrell (8-2, 5 KOs) fought for the second time in 2015, facing stiff opposition in Joe Gbolo (3-2-2, 1 KO) of Albany. Throughout the fight, Burrell did a nice job of feinting with his jab and then coming over the top with his right hand, using his shiftiness and head movement to offset the timing of Gbolo. When he let his hands go, Burrell consistently threw in numbers while only seeing single shots from his opposition. He also maintained a good rhythm while displaying nice footwork, which prevented Gbolo from ever being able to get into any kind of groove.

This bout did eventually go the distance, but Burrell was awarded for his dominant performance with flush 60-54 tallies from the ringside judges to earn the unanimous decision.

Unbeaten Queens native Daniel “El Gallo” Gonzalez (7-0-1, 3 KOs) also returned to action on this card, facing rugged Newark welterweight Malik Jackson over six frames. Gonzalez came out showing good footwork, and the activity really picked up on both sides in the second round. Gonzalez began to focus on the body, which began to slow Jackson, but the end result of that was a close-knit affair that saw the two fighters engaging on the inside. Jackson was a resilient fighter who made Gonzalez earn his rounds, but overall boxing tactics played the deciding factor in this bout.

When the bell sounded to conclude the sixth frame, Gonzalez was the victor to remain undefeated after securing scores of 59-55 and 58-56 (twice).

The lone knockout of the night came off the capable hands of Brooklyn super middleweight Akil “That Dude” Frederick-Auguste (5-1, 5 KOs), who was able to stop Marlon Farr (4-8, 0 KOs) at the 2:56 mark of the first round. Auguste controlled the action from the opening bell, but the finishing blow came in the waning moments of the stanza. After the southpaw buckled Farr with a stiff jab, he quickly dropped him with a follow-up left hand. Farr got to his feet and retreated to the corner, but he did not answer the referee’s call before the count of 10. With just four seconds remaining in the frame, Auguste found himself with his third consecutive first round TKO.

In the opening bout of the evening, the always-entertaining Italy Martinez (1-3-1, 1 KO) met Brooklyn junior welterweight Glenford Nickey (4-1-1, 1 KO) in a highly contested four frame scrap. As soon as the first bell rang to get this one underway, both men stepped into a phone booth and did not exit until time had been exhausted.

Early in the second round, Martinez jumped out to an advantage after an exchange in the center of the ring saw him drop Nickey with a right hook. However, Nickey quickly responded with some heavy hands of his own, and the duo continued to go toe-to-toe once again. At the conclusion of that frame, Martinez made a costly mistake that would eventually prove to be the difference in the fight. After a late punch from Nickey after the bell, he retaliated with a head butt that resulted in him being deducted a point.

Once the third round bell got this bout underway again, it was back to business for these two fighters, and they traded back-and-forth until the conclusion of the fourth and final frame.

The close action was then reflected on the scorecards, as Nickey claimed a tight unanimous decision with tallies of 39-37 and 38-37 (twice).

As is the case with each Uprising Promotions show, the matchmaking by Ronson Frank was once again superb, and his business partner Quillin reiterated that fact at the end of the evening.

“To see a former fighter come in and promote shows like this, I can only say good things,” Quillin remarked. “People need to support this. Sometimes, it seems like they want to see fighters retire broke and not have any other opportunities or skills. People should support fighters who actually get out here and do something besides just get in the ring and take punches all the time.”

Next on the agenda for Uprising Promotions is a show in early 2015, and those details will be announced as soon as they become finalized.

This show on Friday night was sponsored by Brooklyn Brothers, Bill4Time, Belaire Rosé Champagne, Alma Restaurant, Charlie’s Auto Collision in Long Island City and Resolution Sports.
