John Jackson Returns, Looking for Redemption and Revenge Against Jerez

Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, junior middleweight dynamo John “Dah Rock” Jackson (18-2, 15 KOs) will return to action on Saturday, November 15, 2014, at the Quorum Córdoba Hotel in Cordoba, Argentina, against hometown veteran Carlos Adan “El Malevo” Jerez (40-17-3, 18 KOs).

Presented by Sampson Boxing, Maravillabox, Tello-Box and J.E.B. Boxing, Jackson vs. Jerez will serve as one of the main supporting bouts for a night of boxing headlined by Carolina Marcela Gutierrez (22-4-1, 13 KOs) taking on Yulihan Luna Avila (11-2, 1 KO) for the vacant IBF World female super bantamweight title.

25-year-old Jackson says his fight against Jerez will serve two purposes: First, Jerez was the first fighter to pin a loss on his cousin, Samuel Rogers and so some family-style revenge is on the menu.

Secondly, this will be Jackson’s first fight since his shock KO loss to Ireland’s Andy Lee last June at Madison Square Garden. Fighting on the PPV-broadcast undercard of Martinez vs. Cotto, Jackson dominated every minute of the first four rounds against the highly rated Lee before running into perfectly timed right hand at 1:07 of round five. Jackson had put Lee down in round one and battered him around the ring non-stop, but got careless against the dangerous puncher as he was moving in for the kill.

“John knows he got careless against Lee,” said Jackson’s promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz. “He knows what he did wrong and paid a heavy price for it. He was beating Andy Lee all over the ring and forgot about his defense. It’s something that will never happen again.”

Lewkowicz says Jackson is still young and will be able to recover from the surprise loss quickly.

“He’s a very strong, good young fighter and he learned a very important lesson against a fighter with a lot more experience. But before the lucky punch, it was apparent that John Jackson is a top fighter who can handle other highly rated contenders in his division very well. Once he gets his revenge for his cousin Samuel against Jerez, he will continue to rebuild by taking on tough foes to regain his position in the rankings. This is far from the last of John Jackson. It was just a learning experience on his way to the championship.”

Gutierrez vs. Avila and Jackson vs. Jerez will be televised live on Argentina’s TyC Sports.

‘HEBREW HAMMER’ CLETUS SELDIN HEADING FOR TITLE OPPORTUNITY

The ‘Hebrew Hammer’ will get a shot at a title as Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing is proud to present another installment of the popular “Rockin Fights” series on Saturday, December 20th, 2014 at The Paramount in Huntington, NY.

The main event will feature undefeated Jr. Welterweight Cletus “The Hebrew Hammer” Seldin (14-0 11KO’s) Shirley, NY. Returning after a spectacular 2nd round knockout of Ramesis Gil at The Paramount on Sept. 19th, 2014, Seldin is scheduled to fight in a grudge return match with Bayan “The Mongolian Mongoose” Jargal, 17-5-3 11KO’s, Arlington, VA in a 10 round Jr. welterweight match for Regional Title that will be announced shortly. Seldin and Jargal hooked up at The Paramount on July 18th of this year in a feature bout televised as part of the popular ESPN “Friday Night Fights” series. From the opening bell these two warriors went right at each other with damaging punches. The bout was stopped after 3 rounds due to a cut over Jargal’s eye that also caused severe swelling. The bout was ruled a Technical Draw and this time each combatant promises a more definitive ending in what was shaping up as an all-out thrilling war.

The Semi-Final 8 round bout will feature new Star Boxing acquisition, Light Heavyweight Joe Smith Jr., 16-1 13Ko’s, Shirley, NY in his first appearance at The Paramount against an opponent to be named shortly. Smith is known for his devastating power as a professional and was a decorated amateur in the tri state area. In his last fight on July 23rd, 2014, Joe stopped Tyrell Hendrix in 3 rounds in New York City. Smith is also a working member of the Laborers
Union (Local 66) and expects to have many Laborers at the fight.

Star Boxing head honcho Joe DeGuardia had this to say about the holiday card: ” I am excited to have another exciting show at the Paramount. The fights will once again be very fan-friendly and I’m looking to see Seldin and Jargal trade blows again. Their first encounter was a crowd pleasing battle while it lasted. This should be is a tough test for Cletus as Jargal always gives his all and known for his tremendous ability to withstand punishment and then battle back. I’m also thrilled to showcase Star Boxing’s newest signing, Joe Smith Jr. , in the semi-final 8 rounder. He is really an action fighter and I’m excited to see him fight at the The Paramount, a venue that always brings out the best in fighters.”

The remainder of the exciting card will be announced in the near future. The first bout is scheduled for 7:30pm with doors open at 7:00pm. Ajisafe believes he has the blueprint to beat Dickinson – again

LONDON (17 SEPT) British light-heavyweight champion Bob Ajisafe tackles English light-heavyweight champion Travis Dickinson on November 8 at Glow, Bluewater, in the final of the MaxiNutrition Knockout tournament, live on Channel 5.

The double-title affair follows a ten-rounder the duo shared in December 2012, a fight Ajisafe won comfortably over the distance. Naturally, the result of their first meeting has given the Yorkshireman ample confidence going into the rematch.

“I’ve already laid the blueprint on how to beat him,” said Ajisafe, 13-2 (4 KOs). “I’m the only one who has done it. That will probably play on Dickinson’s mind a bit. He knows he couldn’t get to grips with me at all last time. He knows I’m a puzzle he can’t solve.

“But that doesn’t mean I’m resting on my laurels or just assuming I’m going to beat him in exactly the same way. In fact, I’m not reading too much into that first fight. This is a different occasion now, a new day and a new fight. Every fight is different. I’ve got to prepare like it’s the biggest fight of my life and I’ve got to defend my British title. I’m putting everything on the line again. I’m taking it very seriously.”

Dickinson has won four fights on the spin since suffering his sole professional loss at the hands of Ajisafe. What’s more, earlier this year he waged a ‘Fight of the Year’ contender with Matty Clarkson. Ajisafe watched his rival’s progress with a keen eye.

“From what I’ve seen of him since our first fight, I don’t really think he’s changed that much,” said the 29-year-old from Brendan Ingle’s Wincobank gym. “I can’t see him changing his style. He fights in a certain way and that’s just the way he is.

“I expect him to be a little bit more geared up for this fight and a bit more aggressive because of what happened last time. He’s got revenge on his mind and has a point to prove.

“I’ve got no points to prove. I’ll be calm, relaxed and just do what I’ve got to do. If he wants to be a bit more aggressive this time round, it will probably be to his detriment. I’ll adapt accordingly and deal with him.”

Though a hit-and-move stylist with a strong emphasis on defence, southpaw Ajisafe hopes to go one better than last time and halt Dickinson within the scheduled distance. That kind of result, he believes, would mark progress.

“It’s hard to get motivated to go over old ground and beat someone you’ve already beaten,” he conceded. “It feels like I’m going back on myself. I was in this position a couple of years ago and it feels a bit of a step back for me.

“But it’s all about the Lonsdale belt being on the line. That is what has got me up for the fight and that is what motivates me. I have to defend that belt and I’ll go all out to do so.”

Tickets to see who will lift the MAXINUTRITITON TROPHY are available to purchase from Ticketline.co.uk or by calling the Ticketline box office on

Cunningham-Visinia Final Press Conference Quotes

Steve Cunningham
Kathy Duva, Main Events’ CEO
This is our 21st show in the series which will end with its 22nd show on NBCSN on November 8. It has been the greatest privilege of my life putting on a series like this. We got to build stars. We started building stars from the very beginning. It is fitting that it is going to end on the same day that Sergey Kovalev is fighting in the biggest fight of the year.

Steve was already a world champion but we got the opportunity to introduce him to the United States because he fought mainly overseas. Now, he is on the front page of Grantland this morning.

This is the last show I am going to be at for this series. I am not going to be able to attend the last fight of the series because I will be at the Kovalev fight. It feels like high school graduation. It is bitter sweet and sad, but I am also excited about what is going to come ahead. I am also very proud of everyone who has worked on this series.

This fight is no doubt going to live up to expectations. In his last fight, Steve put on the best fight of the series. It was about as perfect as you can get.

J Russell Peltz

J Russell Peltz, Hall of Fame Matchmaker

We began the NBCSN series here in this building. We developed Bryant Jennings, who took the fight on short notice, and (Gabriel) Rosado, who is now ranked among the best in his weight class. This will be our last fight of the series in Philly.

If it weren’t for bad luck, Edner Cherry wouldn’t have any luck at all. He hasn’t lost a fight in years, he has been undefeated in eight fights and yet he can’t get on television. He is ranked number 15. Just as he was set to fight Belmontes, last week Jerry gets hurt with a wrist injury. He was training for a ranked opponent and now he is fighting an unknown opponent.

Natu is undefeated in ten fights with eight knockouts. He has everything to gain and nothing lose. He is probably going to outweigh Steve by about 60 pounds.
Nobody was out of it more than Steve Cunningham was in April against Mansour. Then he got up and dropped the other guy and came back to win. It doesn’t get any better than that. If you weren’t there, you wouldn’t have believed that he got up and managed to win that fight.

Steve Cunningham

Thank you to Main Events, Russell Peltz, MHP, Everlast and Philly Boxing History. I want to thank everyone for their support for Kennedy’s fund. I want to thank Natu’s camp for donating to her fund. This sport is not as savage as people think. We are fathers and husbands. I want to thank Concrete Jungle and Brother Naazim. I think I have the best team in the sport. Naazim takes me to levels and pushes me where I didn’t know I could go. Getting through training camp with him is a victory in itself.

I am the smallest heavyweight in boxing right now. I wish my weight matched my heart! I am Philly to my core. I am born and raised here. This is not new to me. I am here to do a job and Natu and I can go get a beer after the fight. My career has been about relationships. After I am done, I will be back in boxing somehow. I was in the Navy — you get orders and you have to carry them out. I got orders and I have to carry out this mission and defeat Natu on Saturday. My faith is what carries me.

He’s a big power puncher. He’s big. I am a fighter. This is the third undefeated fighter I am fighting as a heavyweight. I am ready to fight. I am a fighter. I have been going through this with Kennedy for nine years. I want to stay active. I want to get back in there. I wanted another shot before the year was out and thank you to Main Events for making it happen.

Brother Naazim Richardson, Cunningham’s Trainer

I would like to thank Russell and Kathy for making this fight and Natu for his kind words. We appreciate it. Kennedy is what Steve wants to be when he grows up. Steve Cunningham is always in the danger zone. Steve is the lightest heavyweight in the division. That shows his courage. In the Mansour fight, I looked at my team and I was very confident. His corner has worked with championship fighters all over the world. Everything I have seen is a big strong hungry guy and that is a problem. This man can fight. He is a danger. Steve is always willing to face those kind of things. This is all he knows. This is what he’s teaching. His son just won an amateur fight the other day. He’s on his crusade. We thank you for the support and for giving us this opportunity. NBC has been a great series. I have seen [Edner] Cherry fight. He is a monster. We got a good card. Come out and see the essence of Philadelphia fighting.

Natu Visinia

Natu Visinia

I am honored and privileged to be here today. Thanks to Russell Peltz and Main Events. Steve is a world champion. I have nothing negative to say about him. I admire him. He is where I want to be. He’s been eating from a good menu for a long time and I am hungry. Some guys need 30 fights before they would face a Steve Cunningham. A fight like this comes along and I jump at it. I have had a pretty rough career. It is a big risk for him to take this fight and I respect him for that. I am going to give Philly what they are coming to see. His fight with Mansour was my favorite fight of the year. I am looking to go to war.

Sal Musumeci

Sal Musumeci, Final Forum Promotions

I would like to thank Kathy Duva and Main Events. I would like to thank Russell Peltz. We are all children of God. The Cunningham family is in the toughest fight right now. I read about their fund. It shows the humanity and the spirit of this sport. I want to present Mr. Cunningham with this check. This is the most important thing – to help his family. They are going through a battle that is much bigger than two men in the ring. My father is sick in the hospital now; I understand what they are going through.

Freedom is not free. This is for the men and women who put their life on the line for our country. Thank a veteran, Veterans’ Day is coming up. Show your support for his family. I say that from my heart.

Putting all that aside, Steve USS Cunningham is a great world champion and family man. I have a lot of respect for him. He is an honorable man. USS Cunningham has a lot of strength behind it. He is taking on a young rising heavyweight. He isn’t coming in just to be on television. He is coming to win and coming to fight. It is going to be a tremendous fight for the fans. Cunningham is a true Philadelphian. He doesn’t hide. They are going to mix it up. This is what fighting is about. This is a war and I am proud to be a part of it. Let’s give Philadelphia a great show.

Edner Cherry

I want to thank you all for being here. I want to thank Main Events and Peltz for giving me this opportunity. Saturday night will be a great show. My hands will do all the talking. I am just prepared for this fight. I’m ready. We are just ready to rock and roll. Don’t miss it. There will be action. It might be a quick night. We will be ready.

Osumanu Akaba

I am happy they called me for this fight. I am ready. I am from Africa and I am ready to show America that I am the best. Everything I need to do I will do in the ring. I am a good boxer. I am going to prove I am the best. Thank you everybody.

WELLIVER: “I WILL SHATTER BROWNE’S WORLD TITLE DREAM”

CHAUNCY WELLIVER says he’ll shatter Lucas Browne’s hopes of boxing for a world title and re-establish himself on the global stage when they meet next month.

The New Zealand-based American, 31, was himself once ranked in the WBC’s top five ranked heavyweights and feels the November 12 fight is a chance to kick start his title hopes.

If experience counts for anything, Welliver will be at a huge advantage. The “Hillyard Hammer” has been a professional for over 13 years and has had 68 fights, while unbeaten Browne has been in just 21 paid bouts.

“This is the perfect fight for me to get my career back on track. Lucas Browne is on a roll but I’m going to derail his train,” Welliver said.

“I think Lucas Browne is a very good prospect, but he’s just that, a prospect. I think my experience will be too much. I was injured my last fight, but I’m fully healthy now and will win this fight.

“I think style wise, you’ll see fireworks. He’s stronger, but I believe I’m more durable. The early rounds will dictate how this fight goes so I’ve got to set a fast pace.

“I’ll take him into the later rounds and see if he sinks or swims. I’m going to use my boxing skills to confuse him and out point him and get my name back up the top of the heavyweight ratings.

“I want to get back where I was a few years ago and I know a win here puts me in the mix. I’ve been training well and getting some quality sparring with Marco Huck and Yoan Pablo Hernandez. I’m going to shatter Lucas Browne’s dreams.”

Browne v Welliver’s clash for the WBC EPBC title is part of a huge night of boxing at the Hisense Arena in Melbourne with the main event seeing Sergey Rabchenko defending his WBC Silver light-middleweight title against Anthony Mundine.

Further title action includes Zhanat Zhankiyanov squaring off with Fred Mundraby for the WBC EPBC bantamweight crown while Leonardo Zappavigna meets Misael Castillo for the WBO Oriental light-welterweight championship.

Jordan Shimmell moves up more in the rankings after winning his recent fight in Las Vegas

Jordan Shimmell, 17-0 with 14 KOs, has been steadily moving up in the regional and world rankings this year. Jordan fought in Las Vegas on September 11th and became the first boxer to stop opponent Joell Godfrey, 17-12-1. Godfrey was a contestant in Season 3 of the reality TV show “The Contender”. Godfrey had been in the ring with many cruiserweight and heavyweight contenders and was coming off a big win in his prior bout defeating Marcus Vinicius de Oliveira who was 23-1-1. Godfrey, who had stated in an interview that he would embarrass Jordan Shimmell and make him look “regular” during the fight, was not able to land any meaningful punches on Jordan. Jordan wasted no time in the fight and dominated Godfrey starting in round 1 and had Godfrey’s mouth bleeding by the end of the first. Jordan continued to pound Godfrey with a variety of punches in round 2 and the bleeding from Godfrey’s mouth became much heavier. Jordan Shimmell continued to apply pressure and landed devastating body punches and many head shots in the 3rd round. Jordan was covered in Godfrey’s blood at the end of the 3rd round. Godfrey was warned by referee Jay Nady for fouls in the early rounds including using his elbow and head and for too much holding. During the 4th round Jordan Shimmell continued his assault and Godfrey bled more from his mouth and nose. Jordan again was coated in Godfrey’s blood at the end of the 4th round. During the 5th round, Jordan Shimmell landed some very hard punches to the head of Godfrey who was dazed by the punches. In retaliation or just to survive Godfrey resorted to more fouls and landed a deliberate low blow to Jordan’s groin. Referee Jay Nady took away a point from Godfrey and Jordan took about 20 seconds of the 5 minutes allowed to recover enough to continue boxing. Jordan then went on the attack again and Godfrey again resorted to landing a deliberate low blow. Referee Jay Nady again took a point away from Godfrey and warned him against any further fouls. Jordan Shimmell again took less than 30 seconds to recover and went right after Godfrey who received a beating for the remainder of the round. After having Godfrey’s blood wiped off from him once again at the end of the 5th round, Jordan Shimmell went on the attack again in round 6. Jordan hurt Godfrey several times in the 6th but Godfrey clinched his way to barely survive the round. Again the highly rated Shimmell was coated in Godfrey’s blood at the end of the 6th but was feeling great and ready to become the first to stop Godfrey inside the distance. The 7th round saw Jordan go out and brutally attack Godfrey who had no answer to survive the attack. Godfrey was visibly drained and a bloody mess while Jordan seemed to be as fresh as he was in the first round. At 1:16 of the 7th round, referee Jay Nady put a halt to the one-sided slaughter and Jordan Shimmell did what nobody else had done and that was stop Godfrey inside the scheduled distance. With the TKO victory, Jordan Shimmell moved to 17-0 with 14 KOs.

Since defeating Godfrey on September 11, 2014, many of the sanctioning bodies have issued new rankings and Jordan Shimmell has moved up in their world and regional rankings. Jordan Shimmell is the USBO Cruiserweight Champion and is world ranked #18 by the IBO and #23 by the WBC. In the regional rankings Jordan is ranked #3 NABA, #3 NABO, #5 NABF and #5 USBA.

JOSEPH DIAZ JR., JULIAN RAMIREZ, DIEGO DE LA HOYA AND TAISHAN TO BE FEATURED THURSDAY, NOV. 13 LIVE ON FOX SPORTS 1 AND FOX DEPORTES

LOS ANGELES (Oct. 16, 2014) – They are four of the most unique personalities in boxing today, but what the headliners on the Thursday, Nov. 13 edition of FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes’ Golden Boy Live! series all share is respect throughout the sport as rising stars with world championship potential. Fight fans will be in for a treat at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California, when Joseph “JoJo” Diaz Jr., Julian “El Camaron” Ramirez, Diego “The Golden Kid” De La Hoya and Taishan all take to the ring in their own pivotal bouts that will push them to the limit.

In the 10-round super bantamweight main event, 2012 U.S. Olympian Diaz will look to follow up last month’s spectacular headlining win over Raul Hidalgo with another defining performance against an opponent to be named.

In the eight-round co-main event, 21-year-old featherweight phenom Ramirez is back in action, with 20-year-old super bantamweight De La Hoya competing in a six-round bout and seven-foot Chinese sensation Taishan will open the telecast in a four-round heavyweight contest. Fight fans are in for a rare treat as Nov. 13 will be just the second bout of Taishan’s highly anticipated professional career.

Opponents for Diaz, Ramirez, De La Hoya and Taishan will be announced shortly.

Tickets, priced at $25, $35 and $45, go on sale this Friday, Oct. 17 at 10:00 a.m. PT at the Fantasy Springs Box Office, by calling (800) 827-2946 or online at www.fantasyspringsresort.com.

“The future of boxing has never been brighter, and the four young men lacing up the gloves on Nov. 13 are among those carrying the torch from one generation to the next,” said Oscar De La Hoya, president and founder of Golden Boy Promotions. “Fans will get to see scintillating action from fighters in a full range of weight classes, all of whom have two things in common – they represent the future of our sport, and none have ever tasted defeat.”

A member of the 2012 United States Olympic team, South El Monte’s Joseph Diaz Jr. (12-0, 8 KOs) is rapidly displaying the skill and poise to not just match his amateur successes, but surpass them. Just 21-years-old, Diaz is gearing up for his third 10-round fight, and since his impressive victories over Ramiro Robles and Raul Hidalgo, Diaz is more than ready for another test on Nov. 13.

The great nephew of the late former world champion Genaro Hernandez, 21-year-old southpaw Julian Ramirez (12-0, 7 KOs) has boxing in his blood, and he’s been on the fast track ever since he turned professional in 2012. A dynamic fighter with all of the tools to succeed, Ramirez is coming off of his third win of 2014 when he faced Ricardo Hernandez on Sept. 27, and he’s hungry for another victory.

Another fighter with boxing running through his veins is 20-year-old Diego De La Hoya (7-0, 5 KOs), the cousin of “The Golden Boy” himself, Hall of Famer Oscar De La Hoya. Already sporting seven wins in a little over a year as a professional, the Mexicali native has become a favorite at Fantasy Springs where he will make his fifth appearance this Nov.

Hailing from Beijing, China, seven-foot tall Taishan (1-0, 1 KO) is one of the most intriguing fighters to enter the ring in years. After his impressive second-round technical knockout of Alex Rozman in his professional debut in July, he showed that he’s not just a great story, but a great young man with the potential to one day shake up the heavyweight division. The former kick boxer and mixed martial artist was a highly respected amateur boxer who moved to the U.S. to take his career more seriously and improve his prospects of defeating the best competition. He’ll get the chance to showcase his dominance of the professional ranks again on Nov. 13 at Fantasy Springs.

The Nov. 13 edition of Golden Boy Live! is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Corona Extra, O’Reilly Auto Parts, Golden Ram Group and Mexico – Live It To Believe It!. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. and the first bell rings at 5:15 p.m. The FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes broadcast airs live at 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT.

Saturday culminates big week for Club 1957 Management

Philadelphia (October 16, 2014) – This Saturday night, three fighters who compete under the Club 1957 Management banner will be in action as Miguel Cartegena (13-1, 5 KO’s) takes on Emmanuel Rodriguez for the WBO Latino Bantamweight title. On the same card in Caguas, Puerto Rico, Jr. Lightweight Jason Sosa (12-1-3, 8 KO’s) takes on Juan Cruz. In Philadelphia, Jr. Middleweight Tyrone Brunson (22-2-1, 21 KO’s) will battle DeCarlo Perez.

Just one week ago, Featherweight Tevin Farmer won his tenth consecutive bout with a one round destruction over Dominic Coca in Springfield, Virginia.

Farmer of Philadelphia took out Coca with one right hook to raise his record to 17-4-1 with four knockouts.

“I always had power and it was just a matter of time before it kicked in. people will see more knockouts from me,” said Farmer.

Farmer is ready for a fight that will put him in great position for a great opportunity.

“I would like to fight for something big. It is up to my promoter and manager. I am ready for that fight tomorrow.”

Farmer is promoted by DiBella Entertainment.

Since he was a prized amateur, big things have been expected for Cartagena and on Saturday night could be the first step to realizing his championship aspirations.

“I am feeling good, strong and confident in myself. I had a great camp and I am just ready and feeling good,”said Cartegena.

“This is the perfect time for me. I have been preparing mentally and physically for this fight. I am expecting a great show and I will give it all what I got and I will show everyone what I do.”

As for Sosa, this will be his first fight in just over six months when he viciously stopped Michael Brooks in the ninth round of their fight in Atlantic City.

“I feel great and camp went really well. It has been six months and I am ready to get back in there,” said Sosa, who will be making his first fight under the Club 1957 Management banner.

“I am looking forward to perform. Being that the fight is in Puerto Rico, I feel that I am at home. I was raised here and am excited to fight here.”

He is facing an unknown quantity in Cruz, but the 26 year-old native of Camden, New Jersey is not concerned.

“I have no idea about him. My job is to train and be prepared. My trainer and manager take care of the other stuff. I am just excited and ready to go.”

” The statement that we hear so often from boxers “Hard Work Pays Off” applies at every level and it is spreading like wildfire in the Club 1957 Stable. It is my job to ensure that every boxer has what they need so they can bring their best performance every time they step into the ring to fight. I am 24/7 with my team in contact with each of my boxers on a daily basis. This may seem obsessive but it works! I choose to work with specific boxers not only because they are elite athletes (which they are) but equally as important because they have committed to put boxing above all. This is just one of the many reasons why I have no doubt that Tyrone ‘Young Gun” Brunson will be victorious over DeCarlo Perez this Saturday night. Tyrone is the more experienced boxer and the fact that he has extraordinary KO power, veteran boxing skills, and in shape…now that is just Dangerous! Obviously I am proud of Tyrone and he is prepared for anything,”said Club 1957 manager Mark Cipparone.

“This week for the stable could not have started off better as both Miguel and Sosa were there to support their gym mate in VA. as Tevin Farmer got things popping with his first round KO. The entire Team traveled together the next morning and we have been in PR since last Sunday finishing up what Miguel calls his best camp ever! I enjoy every part of what I do and I will always give my best when it comes to my boxers… because as I said in the begining “Hard Work Pays Off!”

Club 1957 Management was founded in 2013 by local businessman Mark Cipparone. Cipparone is the owner of the widely successful and popular Rocco’s Collision. Since the formation of Club 1957 Management he has guided the careers of some the top fighters in the country. Currently he manages Heavyweight Joey Dawejko, Jr. Middleweight Tyrone Brunson, Welterweight Raymond Serrano, Bantamweight Miguel Cartegena, Jr. Lightweight Tevin Farmer and Jr. Lightweight Jason Sosa.

Cunningham-Visinia Fight Highlights NBCSN Fight Night Live This Saturday, Oct. 18, at 9 p.m. ET

Steve Cunningham
Philadelphia, PA: NBCSN’s Fight Night on Saturday, Oct. 18, live at 9 p.m. ET is highlighted by a heavyweight showdown between Steve “USS” Cunningham and new undefeated heavyweight Natu “The Truth” Visinia from 2300 Arena in Philadelphia, Pa. Saturday’s fight follows several great boxing events from earlier this year in the fighting city of Philadelphia, including the bout between heavyweights Cunningham and Amir “Hardcore” Mansour on NBCSN.

NBC Sports Group’s Fight Night team of play-by-play announcer Kenny Rice, analyst B.J. Flores and ringside reporter Chris Mannix will call the action.

With his victory over the previously-unbeaten Mansour in front of his hometown crowd in April, 38-year-old Philadelphia-native Steve Cunningham secured the USBA Heavyweight title.

Two-time cruiserweight world champion Cunningham said, “I am happy to be back in primetime. Expect fireworks on October 18.”

The undefeated Visinia hails from Clinton, Ill., and has a dangerous 80% (8 of 10) knockout-to-win ratio. Of his eight career knockouts, seven have come in the first round. He has only gone the distance twice in his young career, once for four rounds and once for six rounds. Saturday will be the first ten-round bout of the 30-year old Visinia’s career.

Visinia has dedicated Saturday’s fight to long-time trainer Charles “Buddy” Bereal, who passed away last week. Visinia said, “I am very excited about the opportunity to fight a great champion like Steve Cunningham. I respect him and I am going to come in ready. Once we get in the ring, all of the training and sacrifice is going to show through.”

The telecast will open with a ten round super featherweight battle between Edner Cherry of Wauchula, Fla., and Osumanu Akaba of Accra, Ghana. Akaba replaces Jerry Belmontes, of Corpus Christi, Texas, who injured his right wrist in training last Thursday.

Edner Cherry

The 32-year-old Cherry has won his last four fights. The Nassau, Bahamas, native is coming off a eight-round unanimous decision victory over Robert Osiobe on the undercard of the Cunningham-Mansour fight earlier this year.

“The world wants to see great fights on television and that’s what NBCSN has given boxing fans,” Cherry said. “I was fortunate to be in person at the Steve Cunningham vs. Amir Mansour fight on NBCSN in April, since I boxed on the undercard. The Cunningham-Mansour fight was as good as it gets.”

Osumanu Akaba

Akaba, 34, has won three minor championships: the WBC International Featherweight Title, WBA Pan African Featherweight Title and WBO Africa Super Featherweight Title. In his last fight, Akaba suffered his first loss in almost five years dropping an eight-round decision to Bahodir Mamadjonov after ten straight victories.

“We’re pleased to bring another exciting card to our viewers from Philadelphia, one of boxing’s greatest cities,” said Gary Quinn, Vice President of Programming & Planning for NBC Sports Group.

Main Events CEO Kathy Duva said, “Visinia is a wild card. He is a former MMA fighter and college football star, and should be exciting in the ring. He is also another undefeated but unknown fighter that will make his US television debut on Fight Night. We have a pretty good track record with those, like Sergey Kovalev, Karl Dargan, Thabiso Mchunu and Bryant Jennings; but Steve is a champion and he knows how to find a way to win. This should be a great matchup.”

‘IT’S A MAN AGAINST A BOY,’ SAYS HALL OF CABALLERO

Monaco/Johannesburg, October 16 – Older by 10 years and with three world title fights under his belt, former IBF bantamweight champion Stuart Hall is unequivocal about his clash with unbeaten American Randy Caballero (21-0, 13 KOs) for the vacant title in Monte Carlo next weekend.

“I’m a man, he’s a boy. A man beats a boy every time.”
The Briton (16-3-2, 7 KOs) can’t wait for the opportunity to be crowned a two-time champion, particularly after a dramatic year that saw him badly cut in his first defence – leading to a technical draw in the second round against Martin Ward – and then lose his belt in a fantastic tear-up with Paul Butler on points four months ago. Butler subsequently vacated the championship.
Hall has since been in camp for the first time in his career, saying that leaving home for eight weeks made his young daughter cry.
“I blame Caballero – and he’s going to pay.”
The former British and Commonwealth champion also teamed up with new trainer Paddy Lynch in an effort to gain the extra momentum required to regain the championship. He says the union hasn’t led to major changes, but a slight shift in movement and other minor tweaks designed to improve his game.
He respects what Caballero (24) has to offer, but says that he doesn’t see anything to really concern him. As for being a betting underdog, he laughs it off: “That’s been the case most of my career, it means nothing. When I fought Vusi Malinga for the title he was also the favourite. It’s fair play . . . more money for me to win.”
Despite his age (34), Hall only turned to professional boxing at 28 after quitting a wild five-year lifestyle of drink and drugs on the party island of Ibiza.
“I’m in my prime, I got all the badness out of my system back in the Ibiza days,” he says. “I don’t miss it. Boxing has made me live, made me a better person. I got up to loads of madness but boxing saved my life. If it wasn’t for boxing I’d either be in jail or I would be dead through madness. That’s what motivates me. It’s why I’m still hungry for success,” says the man who grew up idolising Muhammad Ali and more latterly Mike Tyson.
Hall has been matched tough throughout his career, having fought dangerous boxers like Martin Power, WBA bantamweight champion Jamie McDonnell and Malinga.
His style is the standard of many British fighters: he’s a gritty two-handed battler who does the basics well and boasts an excellent work rate.
“Watch me,” he warns. “Caballero has a padded record . . . he hasn’t been in wars like I have. It’s gonna be a great fight.”
The “Title Tornado” card also includes WBA/IBO strawweight champion Hekkie Budler’s title defence against Xiong Zhao Zhong of China, the WBC Silver middleweight title fight between Martin Murray and Domenico Spada and the WBC Silver light-heavyweight title bout between unbeaten prospects Ryno Liebenberg of South Africa and Eleider Alvarez of Colombia.

Known as one of the most exclusive vacation destinations in the world and situated on the Mediterranean Sea in South West Europe, Monaco attracts millions of visitors each year. The Casino de Monte-Carlo, owned and operated by the Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer, is the premiere casino destination in Europe. The Casino de Monte-Carlo continues to attract some of the wealthiest and most well-known celebrities and aristocrats throughout the world.

‘Young Boxer of the Year’ Kid Galahad labels Quigg and Hearn “a pair of comedians”

LONDON (16 OCT) Earlier this week Sheffield’s super-bantamweight star Kid Galahad attended the annual Boxing Writers’ dinner to pick up his award for 2014’s ‘Young Boxer of the Year’. He was joined by a host of great champions, as well as former Paralympian Tanni Grey-Thompson DBE, and said that winning the honour was something Brendan Ingle, his trainer and mentor, had foreseen a decade ago.

“Brendan is like a prophet,” said the European and Commonwealth champion. “As a kid, he’d tell me what was going to happen in the future. He’s been getting me ready for this kind of stuff for ten years now, since I was fourteen.

“He said I’d win ‘Young Boxer of the Year’, then I’d be super-bantamweight world champion, then I’d unify the division, then I’d be super-featherweight world champion and then I’d be world lightweight champion. I’m going to win everything from super-bantamweight to lightweight. My career hasn’t even started yet. We’re not even close to achieving everything we plan to achieve.

“It was great to go to the dinner with Brendan and for him to see me win the award. That meant a lot. It’s one of the most prestigious awards you can win as a youngster coming up in the sport.”

Days before he accepted the award, Galahad’s promoter, Mick Hennessy, sent an offer of £400,000 to WBA champion Scott Quigg’s lawyer and promoter in the hope that the two domestic super-bantamweights could meet in December. The offer was turned down. Galahad, 18-0 (9 KOs), believes he knows the reason why.

“I think Quigg would take the fight and I think (Eddie) Hearn would take the fight,” said the 24-year-old. “The only person who would be against it is Joe Gallagher, Quigg’s trainer. He knows me. I’ve sparred some good people in his gym and he’s seen what I’ve done. He knows I’d beat Quigg.

“Gallagher would rather Quigg fought a load of numpties and kept defending his belt than fight me. Against me he’ll get a big payday but he’ll also get a big whooping. If he boxed me, he’d get exposed, knocked out and lose his belt. Then what is Hearn going to do with him?

“Quigg is unbelievably poor. He’s robbing a living as a world champion. In fact, he’s robbing a living as a boxer. I cannot believe he’s a world champion. There’s a reason everybody in the division wants to fight him and it’s not because he has a title or they’ll make big money. It’s because they know he’s an easy night’s work.

“Quigg has a habit of boxing blown-up flyweights and then talking about unification fights. It doesn’t make sense.

“His promoter even said he couldn’t fight me because he has a fight on November 22. But who is the opponent? They still don’t have a fight. It’s a joke. Quigg and Hearn are a pair of comedians.”

Black Flash Promotions presents: ‘The Homecoming’ Oct 25th

Black Flash Promotions, headed by former British and European champion Pat Barrett has had to soak up a few promotional body blows since the announcement of their first show at the Middleton Arena in Manchester on October 25th. The original bill has changed somewhat since it was first announced with former Commonwealth champion Matty Hall and the popular Ben Mulligan pulling off the bill through injury. Then last week Young King Fury was withdrawn after the sudden and very sad death of his uncle Hughie Fury. RIP.

“First on behalf of myself, the boxers and everyone involved in Black Flash Promotions, I would like to express our deepest sympathies to the Fury family on hearing the news that Hughie has passed away. He was a good man, I know the family well and it is a big loss, may he rest in peace. Tyson Fury contacted us and explained that his brother wouldn’t be fighting which is understandable, so again we had to re-schedule around that, that’s how it goes, life comes first.” Barrett told www.britishboxers.co.uk

“I never thought for one moment that this was going to be easy.” said Barrett when referring to the withdrawal of the fighters and having to refund ticket money and re-schedule fights for the ‘Homecoming show’

“When they say boxing is the hardest game in the world, they don’t just mean inside the ring.” added the former world title challenger, who has had his fare share of ups and downs in his life and boxing career, but now finds himself back in the domain he thrives best. “Anything in life worth doing or fighting for is never easy and usually there is blood, sweat, tears and stress along the way, that’s life!

“My focus is now getting the lads who are fighting on the show ready. It is their night, we cant dwell on the lads who are not boxing now and worry, the show goes on it is a special night for Matthew Ryan, this kid has trained his heart out and he is one of the most honest and dedicated kids, it is a pleasure to train and guide him. Fighting in his home town of Middleton is a special moment for him.” stressed Barrett.

Dickinson’s desperate for British title and revenge on November 8

LONDON (16 OCT) Heavy-handed Travis Dickinson has had to bide his time for a shot at revenge. He’s had to win other fights and he’s had to stay patient while an original rematch date was delayed.

But, on November 8 at Glow, Bluewater, the 26-year-old English light-heavyweight champion gets the chance to face Bob Ajisafe for a second time in the final of the MaxiNutrition Knockout tournament, live on Channel 5.

“I’ve improved a lot as a fighter since that first fight with Ajisafe,” Dickinson said of his 10-round decision loss in December 2012. “I looked at that fight, saw what I had did wrong and basically realised I boxed absolutely terribly. It will be a different fight this time round, though.

“That one defeat changed me a lot. I was getting used to winning all the time before that and I took it for granted. When Ajisafe beat me, I realised it wasn’t always going to be that way and that I had to improve, change certain things and step my game up. Now I’m a much better fighter. Now I’m not bothered about that defeat.”

Originally scheduled for October 4, Dickinson’s return with British champion Ajisafe was pushed back a few weeks on account of an injury picked up by the Yorkshireman in training. At first dejected, Dickinson quickly learned to embrace the delay.

“At the time I was frustrated, but now, with more training under my belt, it’s been for a good reason,” said the man from County Durham. “I had a chest infection back then and this has given me time to properly get over that. I’ve also had more time to prepare myself and get in great shape. The delay has been to my benefit. I’ll be a much better fighter on November 8.

“We’ve got a game plan that I’m working on and, like any game plan, it may or may not work. But, if Plan A doesn’t work, we’ve added a few more strings to our bow and have now got Plans A through to Z. I’ll have plenty of options to pick from.”

Plenty of motivation, too. After all, in addition to the British and English light-heavyweight titles being on the line, ‘Tasty’ Travis also knows victory over Ajisafe will deliver him the very thing he has craved since 2012 – revenge.

“Revenge is the main driving force for me right now,” said Dickinson, 17-1 (7 KOs). “I really, really want to beat Ajisafe and erase that defeat from my record.

“Of course, winning the British title has been my ultimate goal since I first started boxing, so there won’t be anything left to chance on November 8. I’m going to go in there and do everything I can to win.”

Tickets to see who will lift the MAXINUTRITITON TROPHY are available to purchase from Ticketline.co.uk or by calling the Ticketline box office on

BROADWAY BOXING RESULTS FROM B.B. KING BLUES CLUB & GRILL

dbe_logo
New York, NY (10/15/14) – Earlier tonight at NYC’s famed B.B. King Blues Club and Grill in midtown Manhattan, DiBella Entertainment returned for the latest installment of its popular Broadway Boxing series, sponsored by Everlast and Manfredi Auto Group. In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, each boxer wore pink and black boxing gloves donated by Everlast.

Headlining the action-packed event, popular Brooklynite Heather “The Heat” Hardy, 121½, dominated the formidable Crystal Hoy, 121, of Las Vegas, NV, over 10 rounds to become the WBC International junior featherweight champion, in a superb performance. Hardy boxed extremely effectively throughout, demonstrating many facets of her talent and ability. She was incredibly accurate with her shots while both pressing forward and fighting off the back foot. When Hoy stepped up her attack near the midway point, Hardy proved adept at exhibiting elusive defensive maneuvers and landing counter shots to offset her opponent’s aggression. Whenever Hoy found her way inside, Hardy had no qualms about trading power shots, creating some exciting exchanges. Setting up beautiful combinations behind a stiff jab, Hardy went on to win a clear 10-round decision. Scorecards read 100-90, 99-91, and a puzzling tally of 95-95, which brought jeers from the crowd. Now 11-0 (2 KOs), Hardy remained unbeaten, while Hoy fell to 5-7-4 (2 KOs).

“Winning the WBC title is every boxer’s dream coming up,” said Hardy, “and now this is a dream come true. It’s an honor to win this belt and I plan to proudly defend it and prove to be a worthy champion.”

In the co-feature bout, New York Golden Gloves champion and Broadway Boxing staple, light heavyweight southpaw Travis Peterkin, 176¾, of Brooklyn, competed in his first eight-round contest, facing Sacramento, California’s Otis Griffin, 179½, of The Next Great Champ reality series fame. Peterkin immediately began backing Griffin up, landing his thudding jab. When Griffin would find his way past the jab, Peterkin met him with a straight right hand down the pipe. Over the second half, Peterkin began backing Griffin to the ropes, landing hooks downstairs. In the fifth and sixth rounds, it was evident that Peterkin’s pressure and heavy hands were breaking Griffin down. With Griffin’s punch resistance diminished, Peterkin threw combinations with abandon. Earning a unanimous decision with scores of 80-72, and 79-73 twice, Peterkin upped his record to 13-0 (5 KOs). Griffin saw his record fall to 24-17-2 (10 KOs).

“This was my first eight-round fight,” said Peterkin. “I wanted to pace myself, box effectively and slowly break him down over the distance. My jab was key and my combinations were on point.”

Freeport, New York’s junior middleweight prospect Patrick Day, 153½, the former #1 amateur in the US and a National champion, locked horns with the rugged Felipe Reyes, 153¼, of Houston, TX, trading shots in a phone booth for six thrilling rounds. Reyes took to leaning in and hoping to land wild overhand rights. Day frequently opened up Reyes’ guard by digging to the body first then following through with uppercuts to the chin. In the fifth, Day landed a right hook upstairs to deck Reyes, as he bounced off the ropes. After six rounds, Day earned a shutout unanimous decision with three scores of 60-53, to lift his record to 9-0-1 (5 KOs), while Reyes dropped to 5-4 (3 KOs).

“I felt that I put on a good performance,” said Day. “I think I showed a different side of myself and proved that I am versatile, fighting Reyes head to head. He was very game, but he came in with his head a bit much, using roughhouse tactics. I’m now ready to step up and fight in an eight-round bout next time out.”

Co-promoted by DiBella Entertainment and Fight Promotions, Inc., the 25-year-old Ukrainian Ivan Golub, 159¼, now living and training in Brooklyn, NY, improved to 2-0 (1 KO), by demolishing the normally durable Kirk Huff, 159¾, 3-2 (1 KO), Arnold, MO, inside the opening round. Stalking Huff from the outset, the southpaw Golub eventually trapped him in a neutral corner and landed a thudding left to the body. Huff immediately dropped in pain and, though he arose, the referee felt he was in no condition to continue, halting the bout by TKO at 1:11 of round one. A former amateur star, Golub had amassed an astonishing record of 270-32. He became a five-time Ukrainian National champion, and won bronze medals at the Junior World Championships in 2006 and at the World Championships in 2009. Golub also participated in the World Series of Boxing, winning all five of his bouts.

“I applied pressure right away and quickly spotted the opening to land my left downstairs,” said Golub. “I hit Huff right on the liver and down he went.”

The 20-year-old English/Irish Steed “The Stallion” Woodall, 164, born in Birmingham, England, and now living and training in Palm Beach, FL, made his NYC debut boxing his way to a unanimous four-round decision over the always-tough Azamat Umarzoda, 162¼, 0-6-2, of Las Vegas, NV. As an amateur, Woodall was a five-time English National champion and a two-time British champion, having accrued a 41-5 record along the way. In his fifth professional outing, Woodall focused on his technical ability and placing his shots well, dishing out a steady stream of jabs and straight right hands. Umarzoda ate whatever leather Woodall threw his way and kept on coming, but that did not deter the Florida transplant. Halfway through, Woodall began pounding the body as he outworked his resilient adversary. After four frames, the judges tallied 40-36 twice, and 39-37, all for Woodall, who improved to 5-0 (3 KOs).

“There was a lot of anticipation coming to the Big Apple for the first time, a city that I’ve always wanted to visit,” said Woodall. “I had a durable opponent in front of me, but I worked my jab and body shots well and I was glad to get in the work.”

Opening up the card, former 2012 Olympian for the Dominican Republic, Wellington Arias Romero, 144½, 4-0-1 (2 KOs), of Newburgh, NY, fought to a draw against Lazar Stojadinovic, 146, 1-1-1, of Miami, FL. Stojadinovic started out aggressively winging hooks, while the southpaw Romero looked to establish the proper distance to land his straight punches. Though Romero landed several pinpoint left hands, Stojadinovic remained steadfast, continuously applying pressure and outworking his foe to make it a close affair. Often pinning Romero against the ropes, Stojadinovic’s work rate was favored by the judges. Following the end of the fourth and final stanza, the scorecards read 39-37 for Stojadinovic, and two votes of 38-38, for the draw verdict.

The next installment of Broadway Boxing will take place in December, back at B.B. King Blues Club & Grill.

NONITO DONAIRE

“Confident fighters are dangerous fighters. I know that. But there other fighters who said before a fight they were stronger than me, hit harder, were going to knock me out.

“Walters is a good champion but really how many quality fights has he been in compared to where I have been in my career?

“We both have speed, we both have power. It’s an explosive fight. This is going to end in a knockout. I will go into the ring and do my best.”

NICHOLAS WALTERS

“Donaire is a very good champion. We both have speed and power. The difference is intelligence. I was born to fight. The bigger the fight the better.

“If Donaire isn’t right, he’s going to get knocked out. Maybe five rounds, maybe less. Not sure yet.

“But you know what? Donaire stepped up and took this fight. He didn’t have to. For that, I respect him for getting in the ring with me.”

Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini International Boxing Hall of Fame Candidate

NEW YORK (Oct. 14, 2014) – Former World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight champion Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini is officially a candidate for induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF).

Mancini (29-5, 23 KOs), the pride of Youngstown, Ohio, turned professional in 1979 and officially retired from the ring in 1992. From 1982 to 1984, he captured the hearts and minds of boxing fans all over the world, developing into a marquee fighter and household name.

“To learn that I am on the ballot for induction into the IBHOF has given me great pride, great excitement and great appreciation for those who think that my career is worthy of induction,” Mancini said. “I am truly humbled by this consideration. I would be honored to share that day with the other recipients, my family, my deceased parents, my city of Youngstown, Ohio and boxing fans worldwide.”

Mancini won his first 20 pro fights, highlighted by his win over future two-time world champion Jose Luis Ramirez (71-3) by 12-round unanimous decision, setting the stage for his fist world title shot in 1981 against one of the all-time greats, Hall-of-Famer Alexis Arguello (67-5), for his World Boxing Council (WBC) crown. Arguello proved to be too experienced for the then 20-year-old Mancini, who gave his much more experienced opponent trouble early and built a lead on the scorecards in a spectacular fight, before he was stopped in the 14th round.

In 1982, Mancini captured the WBA 135-pound title, knocking out defending champion (24-1) Arturo Frias in the opening round, in which Mancini was initially shaken and cut by Frias. The popular Italian-American fighter successfully defended his title four times, in order, against former world champion (35-4) Ernesto Espana (TKO6), (17-1-1) Deuk-Koo Kim (KO14), (30-0-1) Orlando Romero (KO9) and two-time world champion (52-6-1) and IBHOF inductee Bobby Chacon (TKO3).

His five career losses were all to world champions: Arguello, Livingstone Bramble (twice), Hector Camacho and Greg Haughen.

Today, among several business ventures, Mancini is a consultant and fight analyst for Fight Network, a 24/7 television channel dedicated to complete coverage of combat sports. It airs programs focused on the entire scope of the combat sports genre, including live fights and up-to-the-minute news and analysis for boxing, mixed martial arts, kickboxing, professional wrestling, traditional martial arts, fight news, as well as fight-themed drama series, documentaries and feature films.

“We’re very proud that Ray Mancini is part of our family,” Fight Network president Len Asper (pictured at left with Ray, picture by Emily Harney) said. “All of us at Fight Network congratulate Ray for being a much deserved Hall-of-Fame candidate. Ray will have an increased role as we expand our channel across all media. He’s a class act and we are thrilled Fight Network is one of the platforms through which Ray continues to inspire others and contribute to the boxing world. ”

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with Fight Network,” Mancini added. “America needs a TV channel that covers boxing around the clock and I’m thrilled to be part of it.”

Members of the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) vote for IBHOF inductees, based on the candidate’s contributions to the sport of boxing. The Class of 2015 will be announced in December. Mancini, who was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 2005, is one of 20 new names on the IBHOF’s “Modern” ballot for 2015.

Mancini favorably compares to 2013 IBHOF inductee, the late Arturo “Thunder” Gatti, in terms of their exciting, blood-and guts style of fighting, proven ability to spike television ratings and ticket sales, and especially their fan-friendly personalities. They both had compelling out-of-ring story-lines. Mancini’s intertwined with his father, Lenny Mancini, who was considered a world champion prospect. An injury suffered in World War II, however, prevented Lenny from fulfilling his potential. Their relationship, as well as how Ray dealt with depression resulting from the Kim tragedy, in which Kim died four days after his fight with Mancini from a brain injury, were featured in the acclaimed documentary, “The Good Son: The life of Ray ‘Boom Boom’ Mancini.”

Giovani Santillan Defends Title, Aims for 15 Straight Wins on “New Blood” Friday, Oct. 24

ORANGE, Calif. (Oct. 14, 2014) – Undefeated junior welterweight Giovani Santillan (14-0, 8 KOs) makes the first title defense of his young career when he meets the hard striking Luis Solis (14-4-4, 12 KOs) in the 8-round main event of Thompson Boxing Promotions “New Blood” event, Friday, Oct. 24, from the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, Calif.

Santillan, fighting out of San Diego, captured the vacant NABF Jr. Championship against Osenohan Vazquez in August.

Tickets for the six-bout “New Blood” card are priced at $100, $60 and $40 and are on sale now and can be purchased by calling (714) 935-0900 or online at ThompsonBoxing.com.

Santillan, a power-punching southpaw with a solid chin and improving defense, has his opponent well scouted. He knows Solis, who is a native of Progreso, Mex., prefers to use his height and length to keep opponents from getting inside.

“I’ve seen his last two fights,” said the 22-year-old Santillan. “He’s a fighter that likes to stay busy. We expect him to throw a lot of punches. The most important thing we need to do is cut the distance and work him inside where he is vulnerable. There will be opportunities to fight him on the outside, and when that happens, I’ll be smart with my punches.”

This will be Santillan’s fourth fight of the year after fighting five times last year. The part-time youth boxing instructor credits his year-round training schedule for keeping him in shape and ready to take fights on short notice.

“It helps that I’m a gym rat and that I’m always basically in fighting shape,” Santillan said. “I’ve never been knocked down or suffered any cuts. I don’t see Solis changing that. I’m going to fight smart and be effective with my punches and defense.”

In the 8-round co-main event, free-swinging super bantamweight Juan Reyes (11-1-3, 1 KO) of Riverside, Calif. and the undefeated Fernando Samaniego (6-0-1, 3 KOs) of Phoenix battle for the vacant NABF Jr. 122-lb Championship. After winning five straight, Reyes now finds himself in somewhat of a funk, having scored two wins against two draws in his last four outings.

“I need to come out and win the early rounds,” Reyes, 25, said. “I’ll be more active than usual to make sure I can steal the bulk of the rounds in the first half of the fight.”

In another 8-round super bantamweight fight, Isaac Zarate (8-1-1, 1 KO) of Los Angeles, who fought Reyes to a draw in May, takes on Heriberto Delgado (11-1, 6 KOs) of Tijuana, Mex. Zarate is coming in hot after dispatching Guadalupe Barrera in the first round in August. Pin-point body shots knocked down Barrera three times before the referee put a stop to the one-sided affair.

“I’ve been working on my body punching and it paid off against Barrera,” Zarate said. “I’m trying to become a more well-rounded boxer. Improving my inside game was something that I needed to work on.”

Additionally on “New Blood”

Jonathan Garcia (15-0, 11 KOs) of Watsonville, Calif., one of the top prospects in the junior welterweight division, will fight an opponent to be named later (6-rounds).

Junior bantamweights Javier Lapizco (6-0, 2 KOs) of Sonora, Mex., and Jose Toribio (5-1, 1 KO) of Tijuana will exchange leather in a 4-round fight.

Opening the “New Blood” show are super bantamweights Edwin Sandoval (3-1, 1 KO) of Bakersfield, Calif. and Fernando Fuentes (4-3) of Hemet, Calif. (4-rounds).

Doors open at 6:30 p.m, and the first bell rings at 7:45 p.m. The Doubletree Hotel is located at 222 N Vineyard Ave, Ontario, CA 91764 and can be reached at (909) 937-0900.

“New Blood” is presented by Thompson Boxing Promotions and sponsored by Lucas Oil, in association with KCAL 96.7 FM Rocks!, KOLA 99.9 FM, and LATV Networks.

Pat Lynch Boxing signs Welterweight Clarence Booth

St. Petersburg, FL (October 15, 2014)–Respected boxing manager and former Manager of the Year, Pat Lynch is pleased to announce the signing of Welterweight prospect Clarence Booth to an exclusive managerial contract.

Lynch, who was the former manager of Hall of Famer Arturo Gatti and currently manages Jr. Middleweight rising star Glen Tapia as well as undefeated Jr. Welterweight prospect Julian Rodriguez.

“I am extremely happy to have signed Clarence. I have been very impressed from what I have seen of him and I look forward to working with him as I see he has a very bright future,” said Lynch

Booth of St. Petersburg, Florida has a record 8-1 with five knockouts and his best days are clearly ahead of him.

“I am grateful to be with Pat. For him to reach out to me is huge. I wasn’t able to get the fights consistently but now with Pat I know that will be happening. I am a gym rat and I am confident that things will move along and I can show the world my talent,”said Booth.

Booth stumbled upon boxing by accident but deep down he knew that this could be his calling.

“I was just trying to find myself and I knew I was gifted at street fighting. I got in some trouble and wound up in a detention center where one of the people who worked there was female boxing champion Laura Ramsey.”

“I went to her gym and the rest is history.”

There he met trainer Nick Sityar and the two forged a bond as they have had many hurdles to get to this point.

“He came from some trouble as a youth and he trained in Laura’s gym. He was my only pupil and then when the gym closed down, we had to train in high school gyms, in parking lots and on tennis courts,”said Sityar.

“But he has great natural talent. He is a puncher-boxer with power in both hands. He only started boxing at age 19 and he is very athletic.”

Booth had a brief 28 fight amateur career.

He turned pro in 2011 with a four round unanimous decision over Tommy Bryant. His only blemish was a controversial defeat to current undefeated Welterweight Cletis Seldin that was a fight marred in controversy. It was a rough fight where Seldin was even docked a point for illegal tactics.

Since that fight, Booth has won six straight with four of those wins coming via stoppage. In his last bout, Booth garnered his most impressive win by scoring a six round unanimous decision over previously undefeated Jonathan Perez (5-0) on June 6.

Booth has facilitated his training by becoming a regular sparring partner to undefeated WBA Welterweight champion Keith Thurman.

“When we go down to the Winky Wright Gym it is all love when I spar with Keith. It is tremendous sparring and I have to stay sharp with technical skills.”, continued Booth.

Said Sityar of the sparring, “When we work with Keith, it’s great work obviously and we get a lot of pointers from former trainer of the year Dan Birmingham. Clarence is very coachable.”

Booth, who is a proud husband and father of four will return to action on Saturday, November 1st in Caguas, Puerto Rico.

Cunningham-Visinia Scouting Report: Experience Meets Size and Power

Philadelphia, PA: Veteran heavyweight Steve “USS” Cunningham has the advantage that comes from over 30 career professional fights as he heads into his Oct. 18 match-up with Natu “The Truth” Visinia, but Visinia has power and a significant weight advantage over the current USBA Heavyweight Champ when they meet at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia, PA. The scouting report for this fight is below:

Category
Steve “USS” Cunningham
Natu “The Truth” Visinia
Age
38
30
Record
27-6 (12 KOs)
10-0 (8 KOs)
Strength
Much more experience; former cruiserweight champion comes into this fight with momentum after a major win April 4 over world-ranked Amir Mansour.
Tremendous knockout power in both hands; a complete athlete who played college football and competed in mixed martial arts; could have a 70-pound weight advantage.
Weakness
Lacks significant power for a heavyweight; has not recorded a knockout since 2010; only 12 K0 wins in 27 victories.
Major step up in competition; first time scheduled for more than six rounds.
Experience
Major advantage here; former cruiserweight titleholder has boxed world-wide; three of his last four fights have been against former or current-ranked heavyweight contenders. (Tomasz Adamek, Tyson Fury, Amir Mansour)
Never boxed more than six rounds against mediocre opposition.

Power
Not known for his knockout power, though he did drop a tiring Mansour in the last round; more of a boxer; will need to be cautious when exchanging with the powerful Visina.
Possesses knockout power in both hands; seven of his eight knockout wins came in the first round.

Speed
Small for a heavyweight, which enables him to move around the ring; may need to be on the move to keep a safe distance from Visinia; must utilize hand speed and a quick jab.
At a disadvantage in this category, but the 270-pound Samoan’s speed is on display during his aggressive flurries when he often forces his opponents to trade punches.
Endurance
Cunningham has gone 12 rounds nine times; five of his last six fights have gone the distance.
Visinia has only been pushed past the first round on three occasions; his previous fight went six rounds, the longest any opponent has taken him.
Accuracy
Good technical boxer who picks his shots and does not waste punches.
Accurate on the inside where he utilizes good bodywork.

Defense
Moves well around the ring, making it difficult for any brawler/puncher to trap him and land significant shots.
Aggressive offensive style may be his best defense; his in-your-face style has thwarted his opponents’ offense.
Chin
Only been knocked out once, by 6-foot-8 heavyweight contender Tyson Fury. Got off the floor twice against Amir Mansour to win in a Fight-of-the-Year candidate.
Unknown; never been down but only had 10 pro fights.
Style
Technical boxer who has no problem trading shots when necessary.
Aggressive offensive fighter with knockout power.
Crowd Support
Will have hometown support.
His aggressive style may win over some fans.
The Match-Up
1. Will age or power be a factor in this fight?
2. Can Cunningham withstand Visinia’s power?
3. Will Visinia be able to connect?
It’s somewhat unusual for the older, more experienced fighter to have the speed advantage. Can the younger, Visinia use his youth and power to overcome Cunningham’s experience and speed?

Main Events’ CEO Kathy Duva: “I’m always excited to bring young, unknown and undefeated fighters onto Fight Night. We don’t know what they have until they get in a real fight. This is how we discovered Sergey Kovalev, Bryant Jennings, Thabiso Mchunu…the list goes on. And Steve Cunningham, a fantastic boxer who has never been in a bad fight, will certainly make this a real fight for Visinia! I don’t know that Visinia’s size and power will be able to overcome Cunningham’s superb technique and speed, but it will certainly be interesting to watch.”

“It is going to be a good fight. I am well prepared. This is the best training camp I have ever had and I have to thank my manager Mark Cipparone and Club 1957 Management for that,” said Brunson.

He is facing the tough Perez, who himself is on a roll as he has won six of his last seven bouts which includes wins over Dante Moore (8-0-2), Jarmar Freeman (9-1-2) and his last bout when he defeated Marcus Willis (13-3-2).

“I do not know much about Perez. I heard he is a rugged guy and he comes to fight.”

Brunson gained a lot of fanfare all over the world as he was amassing all of those knockout victories, three of which came in New Zealand.

“I am past that record. This is a rebirth and fans will see a new Tyrone Brunson. I consider this fight my 2nd pro debut.”

With a new team, led by Cipparone, Brunson has been given a proper training camp and knows he is in the right situation to realize his potential.

“I have been doing things in this camp that I have never done before. Mark has made me very comfortable for this camp.”

With his record, Brunson feels that he is not far away from competing in meaningful fights but a win over Perez is a must for that to occur.

“I plan to close the year with one fight after this. I can see after three fights tops that I can compete for a regional title. After that a world title. But now, Perez is my only focus and then I will go from there.”

“I want to thank my supporters from day one. I hope everybody will come out and enjoy this fight card.”, finished Brunson

Lewkowicz Congratulates ‘Pilon’ Lara for Smashing Debut

Super bantamweight prospect Jorge “Pilon” Lara wanted to put on an impressive performance for his first fight under the promotional banner of Sampson Boxing… Mission accomplished.

Fighting on the undercard of Saturday’s Molina vs. Bundrage fight at the Oasis Hotel Complex in Cancun, Mexico, Lara (26-0-1, 18 KOs) dominated tough veteran Jovanny Soto, dropping him four times before stopping him in four brutal rounds.

It was the first time Lara appeared since signing with Sampson Lewkowicz and Sampson Boxing for his promoters.

Lewkowicz says he’s more than impressed with the 23-year-old southpaw.

“Lara looked like a star tonight,” said a happy Lewkowicz. “I am proud to have him in my stable. He is another future champion I have I my stable at 122 lbs that also includes Oscar Escandon, Tyson Cave, Hugo Ruiz, Luis Emmanuel Cusolito, Jhonatan Arenas and Jonathan Guzman.”

Lara has already scored a first-round TKO over former WBC silver champion Oscar Ibarra and won the WBC FECOMBOX featherweight title with a TKO 6 over then 19-1 Oscar Arenas. The only blemish on Lara’s record was an abbreviated technical draw in the first year of his career.

“I want to thank Pepe Gomez, from Gomez Promotions, for the tremendous hospitality and professionalism in Cancun,” continued Lewkowicz. “Lara will be very tough to beat in this division and so we are expecting big things from him. I’m very proud to be working with his team.”

Lara is advised by the powerful Al Haymon.

Training Camp Notes: Natu Visinia Fights On Despite Sudden Passing of Trainer

Carson, CA:When Natu “The Truth” Visinia steps into the ring Saturday in Philadelphia, PA, to face veteran Steve “USS” Cunningham, it will be with a heavy heart. Visinia buried his long-time trainer, Charles “Buddy” Bereal, on Oct. 10 after Bereal passed away suddenly from a heart attack.

Visinia, 30, is from, Clinton, Illinois, a small town with a population of 7,500. He travelled to California to train with Bereal for the last five years. When Bereal passed away unexpectedly, Jermaine Lefeiloai, Buddy’s long-time assistant trainer, stepped in to finish out Natu’s training camp.

Natu said Buddy was excited for the match-up with Cunningham.

“He was more excited than I was about this fight,” Visinia said. “This is what he always wanted for me. This fight will be dedicated to Buddy. Jermaine has been with us from the beginning. He knows Buddy’s style. He knows my style. We fit in well. It is not like I am starting fresh with someone I’m not comfortable with. I am definitely comfortable with him.”

Bereal was a former welterweight from Mexico and Visinia is dedicating the Cunningham fight to him.

“The fact that we lost Buddy is the hardest part,” Visinia said. “I have to continue to fight. Having lost Buddy I think I am mentally even stronger than I was when I started training camp. This fight is dedicated to Buddy.”

Visinia (10-0, 8 K0s) has managed to stay focused on Cunningham through this tragedy.

“I am definitely going to be the bigger guy in this fight,” he said. “He’s got power. He’s obviously quick and a faster heavyweight. In my training camp I have been bringing in a lot of faster, smaller guys to spar with so I can get my eyes sharp to face a guy like Steve Cunningham. I look at it like he’s got the experience and the advantage over me. It is going to be a great fight. I’m not looking at it any other way.

“I respect Steve and all of the things that he is going through and the sacrifice that he has been through with his family. He’s where I want to be. I need to win this fight to get where I need to be. In his last fight with Mansour he showed a lot of heart. Mansour roughed him up in that fight. Steve showed he deserves to be where he is.”

Lefeiloai: “We haven’t made any major changes. Just real fundamental stuff. I believe he is in great shape. We understand that we are facing a formidable guy.”
