Kid Galahad wins prestigious ‘Young Boxer of the Year’ award

London (24 Sept) Sheffield’s super-bantamweight star Kid Galahad (Abdul-Bari Awad) has won the prestigious ‘Young Boxer of the Year’ award, which will be presented by the Boxing Writers’ Club at their annual dinner at The Savoy in London next month.

The 24-year-old has snared British, Commonwealth and European titles as a professional and secured the IBF World Youth belt on Saturday (September 20) when beating Adeilson Dos Santos via landslide decision at Ponds Forge Arena, live on Channel 5. The win took his professional record to 18-0 (9 KOs).

“This is a great honour for Kid Galahad and it’s richly deserved,” said promoter Mick Hennessy. “He has won British, Commonwealth and European titles in the space of three fights and has truly established himself as one of the very best super-bantamweights in the world. It’s now only a matter of time before he becomes a world champion.

“This award is also testament to the great job Channel 5 and MaxiNutrition have done with Kid Galahad. There are other top super-bantamweights in this country, of course, but, thanks to Channel 5, Galahad has been the one fighting regularly on terrestrial television. As such, his fights have been going out to a bigger audience. Channel 5 have backed him, they’ve believed in him and now everything is coming to fruition.

“It’s a victory for all of us. There are exciting times ahead for Kid Galahad.”

This year Galahad has beaten Brazilian Dos Santos, Australian Fred Mundraby and Spaniard Sergio Prado. Along the way, he has barely lost a round. At the end of this year he hopes to meet either Scott Quigg or Carl Frampton.

He said last week. “I’m fully confident I’ll fight for a world title, and I really hope I’ll fight either Scott Quigg or Carl Frampton. Either of them will do. I personally believe I’d beat them both on the same night.”

Sampson Boxing Signs Prospect Duo from Houston

Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing proudly announces the signing of 23-year-old junior welterweight Karim “KC” Martinez (15-1, 7 KOs) and 30-year-old light heavyweight Craig “El Gato Negro” Baker (14-0, 10 KOs), both of Houston Texas, to promotional contracts.

Southpaw Karim Martinez is blessed with natural athletic ability that helped him win the Texas State Golden Gloves Champion in 2008, as well as to become runner up at the National PAL Tournament in 2007. A slick, pure-boxing technician who uses angles and can fight moving forward or back with equal effectiveness, Martinez mixes offense and defense with amazing smoothness and fluidity.

A natural to the sport, Baker entered Lopez Boxing Club in 2005, weighing a whopping 293 lbs and looking to cut weight. Baker lost his amateur debut and then went on to win the Texas State Golden Gloves and the Texas State USA Championships in both 2007 and 2008. Baker was also runner up at the National PAL Tournament in 2007, a quarter finalist in both the National USA Championships Tournament and the National Golden Gloves, which earned him a USA boxing national ranking of #3. As a professional, the undefeated Baker has become a seasoned pressure fighter who wears opponents down intelligently.

I’m really excited to have signed with Sampson,” said Martinez. “In my career, I haven’t had much exposure or chance to show everybody what I can do. Now that I have Sampson, I’m really excited and ready to perform to the best of my abilities and see where it takes me in boxing.”

“It feels great to be working with Sampson,” said Baker. “It’s wonderful to have the opportunity to actually be able to be successful. All I needed was a shot. I’m going to make the most of it.”

Trainer of both fighters, Juan Lopez of Lopez Boxing in in Bay Town, Texas, says he brought his two star pupils to Sampson based on word of mouth.

“I met Sampson when Chris John fought Rocky Juarez in Houston. I was the one that coordinated the training camp for John. Everything I heard about Sampson from John’s people, Craig Christian and Tony Tolj, I liked. Craig gave him the nickname ‘The Picasso of Boxing’ because he paints the game of boxing, and I always thought to myself that if I ever have a kid good enough to fight at the international level, I would go to him. Well, now I do. I have two. And that’s why I took them both to Sampson. Thanks to Sampson for giving us the opportunity. Staying active is very hard here in Texas and he’s going to really help us with that.”

“Both of these fighters have tremendous potential,” said Sampson Lewkowicz. “I have already started work to put them in important fights and show off their talent. I expect both will be established contenders within a very short time. I’m looking forward to working with Juan and Karim and Craig and helping them get the most of their careers.”

Martinez will make his Sampson Boxing debut on October 3 in Buenos Aires against Nazareno Ruiz (29-15, 9 KOs) from Argentina. Baker’s debut will be announced shortly.

Álvarez, a light-middleweight knockout artist known for his tremendous punching power, made his pro debut in 2005 at 15-years-old and quickly became one of the most popular prize fighters in the sport. His exciting fighting style and reputation for taking on all comers has captured the attention of fans all around the world.

“Everyone at HBO is excited to welcome back Canelo Álvarez to the HBO family, and we can’t wait to re-introduce him to our subscribers,” said Ken Hershman, president of HBO Sports. “At only 24-years-old, Canelo has already established himself as one of the boxing world’s brightest stars, and we look forward to a long and mutually beneficial relationship as we embark on this new chapter together. The award-winning network has a 40-year history of presenting the best fights on television. Canelo has previously fought seven times on HBO platforms in his pro career; three times on the HBO Boxing After Dark series in 2011 against Kermit Cintron, Matthew Hatton and Ryan Rhodes, and four on the HBO Pay-Per-View platform versus Jose Miguel Cotto (2010), Carlos “Tata” Baldomir (2010), Alfonso Gomez (2011) and Sugar Shane Mosley (2012).

UNDEFEATED JUNIOR MIDDLEWEIGHT PROSPECT “NOTORIOUS” FRANK GALARZA REFLECTS ON PAST WEEKEND’S IMPRESSIVE VICTORY

New York, NY (9/23/14) – On Saturday, September 20, Brooklyn fan favorite junior middleweight Frank Galarza remained unbeaten while headlining an exciting night of action promoted by New Legend Boxing, at Resorts World Casino, in Jamaica, NY. Both junior middleweight Alantez Fox and featherweight Danny Aquino were also successful in comeback fights on the undercard. All three dynamic prospects are co-promoted by DiBella Entertainment and New Legend Boxing.

Facing the awkward Jonathan Batista, of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, in an eight-round contest, Galarza, 153¾, started off by patiently stalking his foe over the first two frames. In the third, the Brooklynite picked up the pace, digging to the body. Trapping Batista, 152¾, in his own corner, Galarza landed a powerful left hook downstairs to drop him to a knee. From then on, the hometowner was in complete control, while Batista grew increasingly frustrated, resorting to dirty tactics. Referee Harvey Dock deducted a point from Batista in round four for hitting behind the head and ultimately had to disqualify him at 0:45 of the fifth frame for repeated infractions. With the loss, Batista’s record fell to 14-4 (7 KOs). World ranked by the World Boxing Council (WBC) and now 15-0-2 (9 KOs), the charismatic and talented Galarza is on the rise and poised for stardom.

“It felt great to fight in front of my hometown fans again,” said Galarza. “This was my sixth fight at Resorts in Queens, and my fan base continues to grow. I have people coming to see me from all over, Boston, Chicago, Connecticut, wherever. I must be doing something right. I felt good in there against Batista, but I was a little too anxious to knock him out. I was looking for that one big punch, but then I adjusted and began to break him down. Batista started getting a little dirty, but I kept my composure. Whether he was disqualified or not, it didn’t matter. He was going to get knocked out eventually. I got the win and that’s what matters. Now, it’s back to training and I’m just looking forward to the next fight.”

Former Galarza rival and now promotional stable mate Alantez Fox, 157, of Forestville, MD, returned to the ring following a 53-week absence while sorting out managerial issues. Shaking off the ring rust against the upset-minded Jonathan Garcia, 156½, of Cerro Gordo, Puerto Rico, the 6’5″ Fox established a distance early on with his long jab and superior reach. Garcia did his best to close the gap, winging hooks to the midsection. By the middle rounds, Fox did fight in close quarters to Garcia’s advantage on occasion. However, he wisely switched tactics to focus on straight punches to ward off his opponent’s advances. As Garcia tired down the stretch, Fox used right hook pot shots to keep him at bay. Punctuating the fight by pinning Garcia against the ropes with flurries, Fox earned a unanimous six-round decision on tallies of 60-54, and 59-55 twice, to improve to 13-0-1 (4 KOs).

“Having been off for so long, I was kind of nervous excited going into the fight,” said Fox. “Garcia was a real durable, tough guy and he landed some good shots on me. I was working on my patience and picking my shots in there. I did feel a bit rusty, but once I got into my groove, the fight wasn’t too challenging. I’ll be back in the gym by next week and would love to stay active and fight again in the next few months.”

Mexican featherweight Danny Aquino, from Meriden, Conn., ended an 18-month layoff to secure a six-round majority decision victory in what was a wild shootout against the very game local Dominican Jhovanny Collado, of Jamaica, Queens. From the opening bell, Aquino, 122, displayed relentless pressure and pure aggression as he swarmed Collado, 124, who was more than willing to return fire. Working his way inside with combinations to the body and landing his overhand right upstairs, Aquino dominated much of the action. However, he survived a scare in round four when Collado caught him coming in to drop him twice. Fighting on instinct, Aquino managed to hurt his adversary by round’s end. The pair never let up for the remainder of the contest, often bringing the raucous crowd to their feet. Scorecards read 57-55 twice, and 56-56, to award Aquino the verdict. At 16-2 (10 KOs), Aquino is an all-action brawler looking to work his way back into the world rankings.

“It felt good to come back,” said Aquino, “but I never expected to end up on the floor like that in the fourth round. I just dropped my hands a little bit, got careless and he caught me with one of his wild hooks, but I got up and did what I had to do to win. I boxed a little bit in the fifth to clear my head and was fine by the last round. Other than that one round, I knew I was in control and winning the fight. Whatever DiBella Entertainment and New Legend Boxing think is good for me next, I’ll take. I will fight anybody.”

“It was great to see Fox and Aquino back in the ring after such a long layoff,” said Felipe Gomez, of New Legend Boxing. “I think both fighters demonstrated that they are ready to step it up and take on bigger fights. Galarza’s fan base turned out in full force to watch him break down a tough veteran in Batista with body shots. I believe Galarza has what it takes to be in the mix for a title fight in the near future. All three of these fighters are exciting to watch and worthy of televised fights.”

“Galarza is definitely ready to take the next step toward becoming a contender. He truly has the talent and the personality to become a major star in boxing,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “I’m happy that Fox and Aquino were able to get back into the ring and shake off the cobwebs with impressive victories. Both fighters have a lot of potential and we will work hard to get them the best possible opportunities.”

WSOF Hits Pay-Per-View with Unprecedented Fighter Revenue Sharing Model

LAS VEGAS (Sept. 23, 2014) – In a radical move that could forever change the earning potential of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters, World Series of Fighting (www.wsof.com) has announced that it will enter the pay-per-view business in the second half of 2015 with an unprecedented revenue sharing model that will pay 50 percent of all net revenue earned from live pay-per-view events it produces, to the fighters featured on the telecasts.

“This is a proud day for the sport of mixed martial arts and our organization and one that we hope will create a better opportunity for the fighters who put everything on the line every time they step inside the cage,” said World Series of Fighting President, six-time world champion and two-time Hall of Famer Ray Sefo.

“Until now,” continued Sefo, “one of the main things holding this sport back from becoming even bigger than it is today has been fighter compensation and the inability of the sport’s top athletes to earn on par with top-level professional athletes in other sports.

“If fighters can’t earn a fair share of the money at the top,” said Sefo, “the fighters lose hope or become disenchanted with the sport, which impacts their commitment to training and preparing properly for title fights. That is about to change, thanks to this major step we are taking now fighters will train harder than ever to become a champion giving the fans some epic championship bouts to enjoy. We want to thank NBC Sports and NBC for giving us such an amazing stage to grow World Series of Fighting since its debut.

Since it launched its live event series on Nov. 3, 2012 with a stellar six-bout fight card on NBC Sports Network that reaches over 80 million homes, World Series of Fighting has effectively been building its brand and on July 5, the promotion made its debut on broadcast television before a live NBC audience of nearly 1 million viewers.

World Series of Fighting has successfully expanded its footprint to over 80 countries and counting with its premier fight programming as part of a multi-year agreement with IMG the world’s leader in sports content distribution.

World Series of Fighting returns to NBC Sports Network on Saturday, Oct. 11, with a four-fight telecast headlined by a welterweight (170 pounds) showdown between superstar Jake Shields (29-7-1) of San Francisco, Calif. and Canada’s Champion Ryan Ford (22-4) of Edmonton, Alberta Canada. The promotion will also crown its first heavyweight champion in history in the co-main event between fast-paced finisher Smealinho Rama (8-1) of Calgary, Alberta Canada and KO artist Derek Mehman (18-5) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Additional details about World Series of Fighting’s 2015 pay-per-view launch will be announced soon.

Sampson Boxing Reaches Promotional Agreement with Canada’s Tyson Cave

Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing is proud to announce the signing of Halifax, Nova Scotia’s Tyson “Prince of Hali” Cave (24-2, 8 KOs) to a promotional agreement.

A former five-time Canadian champion as an amateur (record 160-16), 32-year-old Cave has already won the WBC Continental Americas Super Bantamweight, the CAM (Canadian American Mexican) Super Bantamweight and the Canadian Super Bantamweight Championships as a professional. He is currently rated #5 in the world by the WBA.

“It’s a great honor to be joining Sampson’s promotional stable. He works with guys like (former middleweight world champion) Sergio Martinez, and now I’m working with him,” said Cave. “I’ve been working very hard and patiently waiting for the chance to reach my potential. I’m very grateful to Sampson Lewkowicz for investing in me. I won’t disappoint him.”

A flashy, colorful and confident southpaw with excellent speed and movement, Cave says his greatest strength as a fighter is his unpredictability. “The great thing about me is I don’t think I ever know what I’ll do in the ring. I like the cameras and the limelight. I’m flashy. I jump. I come up with unique ways to hit a person and I’m very hard to hit back.”

Cave’s trainer, Bunny Phillips from Titans Boxing Academy in Halifax, says the deal with Sampson Boxing will solve the one problem they have had with Cave’s professional career, thus far.

“The problem with Tyson has always been finding him fights. He makes guys look bad. We’ve been trying to get him fights all over the world and nobody will fight him, so this deal will allow us to let a world-class promoter like Sampson line the fights up for us.”

Robert Cave, Tyson’s father and former promoter, agrees with Phillips that the deal with Sampson Boxing is a good fit and shares his son’s lofty aspirations.

“We are extremely delighted and looking forward to a great relationship. We plan on bringing another world championship to Sampson Boxing.”

Cave is not the shy type. His first fight under the Sampson promotional banner will be against stable mate Oscar Escandon late this year… a fight Cave feels is a bad career move for his opponent.

“To be totally honest, Escandon is lucky to be #2 in the world. He’s done his career the easy way. I’ve done it the hard way. I’m down here in Nova Scotia where nobody’s ever heard of me. He gets these easy fights to build his record up and I’m here grinding. He better learn how to move and be ready for some unbelievable speed. I think he’s flat-footed and it’ll be a big problem for him that night.”

Cave’s chief sparring partner, Dan Trenaman, agrees that Escandon is in for a surprise when the two meet.

“I’ve sparred all over Canada and there’s nobody that moves like Tyson and has his rhythm. He loves to perform and be in front of the crowd. He loves the lights. When your confidence is at 100% like his is, there are no nerves. He’s got that kind of mentality. He’s unpredictable and he’s really become more of a puncher as he’s advanced. He’s really adapted to the pro game.”

Lewkowicz says he’s happy to be able to help Cave’s struggle with inactivity and is looking forward to giving him the chance to prove himself on the world stage.

“Tyson is a very confident fighter,” said Lewkowicz. “He wants the chance to become a world champion and said he needed help landing the fights to get him there. That’s what I will do for him and I have great confidence in his ability to make the most of it.”

Joey Dawejko scores 2nd consecutive 1st round knockout

Dawejko_Banks 2
Philadelphia (September 23, 2014) -This past Friday night at Harrahs Philadelphia, Heavyweight Joey Dawejko scored his 4th straight win and his 2nd consecutive 1st round knockout when he destroyed Yohan Banks in 94 seconds of their scheduled 8-round bout.

The fight headlined a card that was promoted by Joey Eye Boxing Promotions, XFE and Peltz Boxing.

About forty-five seconds into the bout, Dawejko dropped Banks with a hard left hook. Banks was clearly hurt and went down again from two more lefts. Dawejko clearly smelled blood and put Banks out of his misery with two more lefts and Banks went down for a 3rd and final time.

The win comes on the heels of 1st round stoppage by Dawejko over David Williams on August 2nd. He has registered 6 knockdowns in his last 3:22 of work.

The win ups the 24 year-old’s record to 12-3-2 with five knockouts.

“I thought I put on a great performance. I knew he was tough but I knew when i hit him with the first shot that I had him,”said Dawejko.

“I feel like I am back on track and ready to great things.”

“I want to thank my manager Mark Cipparone and Club 1957 Management and my promoter Russell Peltz.”, finished Dawejko

“I am excited not only about the win but how Joey has set himself up each time to get those amazing 1rd KO’s. I believe that when a fighter with talent such as Joey decides to truly do what it takes and put his boxing career above all amazing things seem to happen! That being said I am extra proud to be a part of his team as every piece of this has been coming together rather seamlessly. So hats off to head Coach Billy Briscoe, strength trainer Jermaine Clarke and Joey’s brother Walt for they too have contributed to this great victory!”, said Mark Cipparone of Club 1957 Management.

TWO-TIME WORLD CHAMPION “BAD” CHAD DAWSON RETURNS TO CONNECTICUT

Chad Dawson
New York, NY (9/22/14) – On Saturday, October 4th, DiBella Entertainment and Warriors Boxing will stage a thrilling SHOWTIME Boxing Special Edition with reigning undefeated IBF champion Rances “Kid Blast” Barthelemy (20-0-0-1NC, 12KO’s) defending his super featherweight title against former world title challenger and IBF #3-rated Fernando Saucedo (52-5-3, 8KO’s) in the main event.

Also appearing on the telecast will be two-time light heavyweight champion “Bad” Chad Dawson (32-3, 18 KO’s) making his long-awaited return to his home state for the first time in five years. The event will air live on SHOWTIME beginning at 9 pm ET/PT from the Fox Theater at Foxwoods Resort Casino, in Mashantucket, Conn.

“It means a lot to me to be back fighting in front of my hometown fans, to be back on the East coast and not in enemy territory,” said Dawson. “I’m looking forward to putting on a great performance in front of my fans, friends and family in attendance.”

He’ll be facing the always-game former world title challenger Tommy Karpency (23-4-1, 14 KO’s), from Adah, PA, in a 10-round light heavyweight contest. Since losing to Nathan Cleverly for the WBO title and Andrzej Fonfara for the IBO belt, both in 2012, Karpency has won two straight. In January of this year, Karpency avenged a previous defeat by unanimously outpointing Rayco Saunders, and then picked up the NABA light heavyweight strap with a victory over Dhafir Smith in July.

“I’ve watched my opponent, Tommy Karpency, and I know he’s a hungry guy,” assessed Dawson. “He won’t be in there just for a paycheck, but I am prepared for whatever he brings.”

In search of his third world title, Dawson, of New Haven, will step foot inside a Connecticut ring for the first time since 2009. Upon turning pro in 2001, eight of Dawson’s first 15 fights were staged at Foxwoods, a venue in which he is undefeated, making him a local fan favorite.

“I started my career at Foxwoods, my old stomping grounds,” reminisced Dawson. “It’s hard to believe that it’s almost been a decade since I last fought at that venue. I’m excited to be fighting there again and I’m sure it will bring back a lot of memories.”

After handing Tomasz Adamek his first loss in 2007 to pick up the WBC light heavyweight title, the southpaw Dawson swiftly cleaned out the division, twice defeating both former champions Glen Johnson and Antonio Tarver. Following a loss to Jean Pascal in Canada, Dawson regrouped to secure the biggest victory of his career, regaining the WBC belt with a 12-round decision over future Hall-of-Famer Bernard Hopkins in April 2012.

Suffering subsequent back-to-back losses in 2012 and 2013, Dawson is once again on the comeback trail. On June 21, 2014, Dawson annihilated the formidable George Blades inside one round. A straight left to the body dropped Blades and a follow-up barrage put him down again for good.

“I’ve been training in Louisiana for this fight. Against Blades, I came in a bit heavy, but I’ve been working with my strength and conditioning coach and I will make 175 pounds without a problem. I’m strong and I’ve got that hunger back.”

Now rated #11 by the WBO and #14 by the WBC, Dawson is determined to secure an impressive victory on October 4th in front of his hometown fans, as he climbs back toward another championship opportunity.

“I’m now making my comeback. After this fight, should everything work out as planned, I will be putting myself into position to fight for a world title by next year. I want to end my career on a strong note.”

Additional undercard bouts will be announced shortly.

Tickets, priced at $150, $90 and $45, are currently on sale and may be purchased online at Foxwoods.com, by calling the Foxwoods’ box office at 800-200-2882, or in person at the Foxwoods’ box office. Tickets may also be purchased through any Ticketmaster outlet or online at Ticketmaster.com. Doors open at 6:00pm, with the first bout scheduled for 6:30pm.

“CHUKY” FLORES READY FOR US DEBUT THIS FRIDAY NIGHT

Deerfield Beach, FL (September 22, 2014) Undefeated and heralded Mexican featherweight prospect MOISES “Chuky” FLORES will make his highly anticipated United States debut at “Big Texas Throwdown” this Friday, September 26th at the Mesquite Arena in Mesquite, Texas, just outside of Dallas.

Flores, 20-0-0 (15KO’s), will fight in a six round special feature attraction against PABLO BATRES of Nogales, MX in a bout presented by Boxing Legend MIKE TYSON and Iron Mike Productions in association with Mario Davila Media and Big Card Promotions.

Known in his native Mexico for his show stopping knockouts, the heavy handed Flores will be making the first start of his 2014 campaign following a trail of destruction south of the border.

In mid-August, Flores commenced training at the Iron Mike Productions headquarters in Deerfield Beach, Florida.

“Training here has been perfect,” said Flores. “Iron Mike Productions has excellent facilities and I will be fully prepared for my US debut this Friday.”

“Chuky is a special talent, his knockouts in Mexico have been huge news in that country and we can’t wait to showcase him for US boxing fans” said Tyson. “He’s exactly the kind of fighter boxing fans in the US will love, all action with knockout power in each hand.”

Fighting out of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, Flores scored three devastating knockouts in 2013, the biggest of which was a brutal second round stoppage of longtime Mexican contender Rodolfo Hernandez on February 23rd in Guerrero, Mexico.

Earlier this month Flores attended the 2014 Box Fan Expo with the Iron Mike Productions’ Team where he met former middleweight world champion SERGIO MARTINEZ.

“Big Texas Throwdown” is headlined by an excellent 12-round WBA “Super” World Bantamweight Title bout between longtime champion ANSELMO “Chemito” MORENO of San Miguelito, Panama and #1 ranked contender JUAN CARLOS PAYANO of the Dominican Republic.

Also featured on the card will be popular Dallas-Fort Worth area fighters including middleweight contender CHARLES “The Future” HATLEY, 23-1-1 (16KO’s) who will be featured in the ten round co-main event, former world title challenger ROBERT MARROQUIN,
23-3-1 (16KO’s), undefeated cruiserweight prospect RAPHAEL MURPHY 9-0-0 (7KO’s) and super featherweight prospect DE ANTHONY BONNER, 7-1-0 (2KO’s).

Advance tickets for “Big Texas Throwdown”, priced at $250, $100, $75 and $50 can be purchased through Ticketmaster, (www.Ticketmaster.com, phone 1-800-745-3000).

The Mesquite Arena is located at 1818 Rodeo Drive in Mesquite, Texas, 75149. Doors will open on the evening of the event at 6:00 p.m. with the first bell at 7:00 p.m.

Groves back with a unanimous decision verdict to claim European crown and WBC mandatory position

George Groves
‘Saint’ George Groves (20-2, 15 KOs) returned in style on Saturday night. The Hammersmith boxer announced himself back on the world scene with a unanimous decision verdict over the tough Frenchman Christopher Rebrasse (22-3-3, 6 KOs) in a final eliminator for the WBC World Super Middleweight title.

‘’It feels great to be back,’’ said Groves. ‘’Rebrasse was a good opponent, a very tough guy, he took an awful lot of shots and kept coming. I knew it was going to be a hard fight. I felt in good condition but you always have to be cautious against a guy that has never been stopped. I want to entertain, I want to knock people out. I didn’t manage that tonight but I gave it real good go. Things are only going to get better from here. We’re getting ready to take over the world!’’

The former British and Commonwealth Champion can now add the European and WBC Silver titles to his impressive resume, and prepare for a mandatory challenge for Anthony Dirrell’s WBC belt. ‘’Dirrell has already made some statements, he’s a bit cheeky, a little bit outspoken,’’ said Groves. ‘’He’s been quite disrespectful to Rebrasse. I knock out a lot of guys and Rebrasse took some big shots, I’m not sure Dirrell could stand up to some of the punches I landed tonight. He has said he doesn’t want to fight me, that he doesn’t want to come to the UK but now he may just have to.’’

Promoter Kalle Sauerland was pleased with what he saw in the ring and at the post-fight press conference revealed he is ready to begin negotiations for a WBC World title fight. ‘’Before this fight I described George as one of the most exciting boxers on the planet,’’ said Sauerland. ‘’After tonight’s performance my mind hasn’t changed one bit. We’re ready to start to talking to Dirrell’s people. I don’t see any other options for them, there are no bigger fights out there. George is a natural entertainer inside and outside the ring. He has a style that would be very appealing to a US audience.’’

SELDIN HAMMERS GIL AT ROCKIN FIGHTS 15

Before another packed house on Friday, Sept. 19th, at The Paramount in Huntington, NY, undefeated, fast rising, Jr. Welterweight prospect Cletus “The Hebrew Hammer” Seldin (14-0 11KO’s Long Island, NY), blasted out spoiler Ramesis Gil with a sensational one punch knockout in the 2nd round of a scheduled 10 round Jr. Welterweight bout.
Both fighters came out aggressively in the first round with each scoring

hard shots and little to choose between them. The 2nd round began with Seldin stalking Gil (8-9-5 5KO’s Santo Domingo, DR) backing him up. Seldin beat Gil to the punch and landed a thunderous right hand on Gil’s chin. Gil crumpled to the mat and was counted out giving
Seldin his 11th KO in 14 fights.

The semi final 8 round Lightweight bout saw previously undefeated Alan Gotay (8-1 4KO’s Huntington, NY) lose a shocking, upset decision to Hector Marengo.
This was your classic Boxer-Puncher match that saw Gotay constantly pressuring the moving Marengo throughout the fight. Marengo countered Gotay’s charges with sharp punches and scored a highly questionable knockdown in the 4th round that Gotay was dominating and in all likelihood was the deciding factor in the fight. The action was fast paced over the 8 rounds and the final scores were 78-73, 77-75, 76-75 all for Marengo (7-8-4 4KO’s Arecibo, PR).

Undefeated Romanian Heavyweight Constantin Bejenaru (6-0 3KO’s Catskill, NY) scored a convincing one sided victory over Tyyab Beale (9-6-1 3KO’s Newark, NJ) in an action packed exciting 6 round Heavyweight bout. Bejenaru was the busier of the two often landing huge blows that had the crowd oohing and ahhing. Bejenaru scored a knockdown in the 6th round that sealed the victory 60-54 on all three cards.

In an all out war local Jr. Welterweight Anthony Karperis (8-1 3KO’s Hicksville, NY) scored a split decision victory over battle tested Jose Valderrama (4-8 3KO’s Arecibo, PR). These two young fighters went at it from the first bell standing toe to toe exchanging blows. The 2nd round was a classic round as Valderrama hurt Karperis early in the round with a straight right hand but then walked into the same punch thrown by Karperis which badly hurt him. Karperis jumped all over Valderrama looking for the early finish but Valderrama hung in there and had Karperis backing up at the end of the round as the packed house were on their feet cheering.
Valderrama scored a knockdown of Karperis in the 4th round with a beautifully thrown right hand but Karperis battled back as he had Valderrama pinned in the corner as the bell sounded to end the round. Two judges had it 57-56 for Karperis while the 3rd judge favored Valderrama by the same score.

Local favorite John Hernandez (1-01KO Huntington, NY) thrilled his large throng of fans by scoring an exciting TKO at the end of the 1st round over Dwayne Holman (1-3 Monclair, NJ) in a scheduled 4 round Lightweight match. After a thrilling first round between these two young fighters, Holman was forced to retire at the end of the end due to an eye and nose injury.

The opening bout saw Ahmed Tuba (2-3 Israel) upset Courtney Penninton (7-2-1 4KO’s Brooklyn, NY) in a 4 round Middleweight bout by unanimous decision 40-36 on two cards and 39-37 on the third card.
The bouts were presented by Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing who have turned The Paramount in Huntington, NY into quite possibly the best fight club in the US.

American heavyweight sensation Jarrell Miller on MSG tonight

Brooklyn, NY (September 19, 2014) — The heavyweight division is moving closer to the post-Klitschko era. Vitali Klitschko has retired and Wladimir Klitschko can’t have many more years left at the top of the heap.

Fight fans are now looking for fighters who will be stepping in to fill the vacuum. New York-based promoter Dmitriy Salita believes that he promotes a boxer with the skills, and the punch, and the charisma, to help fill the gap when the Klitschkos are out of the picture.

You can see for yourself what Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller brings to the table, TONIGHT, on MSG Network.

This evening (Friday, Sept. 19, 10 PM ET), you can check out prospect, and possible future heavyweight champion “Big Baby” Miller, a 26-year-old Brooklyn resident, who owns a 9-0 record (with 9 knockouts).

Miller’s fight with solid vet Joshua Harris will be part of a program topped by a stellar main event, a leading contender for 2014 Fight of the Year, the cruiserweight clash for the WBC International championship, between Junior Wright and Steve Bujaj.

Salita is totally enthused about the possibilities in the near future for Miller, who’s conjured some buzz as just maybe being another hard-punching luminary from the borough of Brooklyn, which helped form the character and skill set of Hall of Famer Mike Tyson and super-skilled Riddick Bowe.

“Jarrell has the skills, size, power and personality to be a force and a star in the heavyweight division,” Salita said.
Salita recommends you get the popcorn and beverage of your choice ready for the MSG presentation this evening, and also asks that you note the show will run Saturday, Sept. 20 (7 PM ET) in case you have other plans this evening. “Junior Wright versus Steve Bujaj was the best live fight I have ever seen,” the fighter/promoter said, which is no small feat.

The next chapter of Ross Burkinshaw: Thoughts after Commonwealth title win

On what seemed to be an average, chilly September evening, Ross Burkinshaw’s persistence finally paid off, and landed him the Commonwealth Bantamweight title in a sizzling-hot encounter that barely even happened.

The Sheffield, England, native answered the door — or telephone — when opportunity came knocking.

When he was told he could sign up for this fight, he was drifting into weight-range for a planned six-rounder coming up about two weeks later. Burkinshaw was ready to continue his climb back into the rankings before he was awarded this amazing chance, and, so, he took it with haste.

He was supposed to be in a stay busy fight, one that, under desirable circumstances, might have landed him a fight for a regional trinket.

Soon, all of that talk was thrown out the window. On four days notice, Ross Burkinshaw (13-5-2 7 KO’s) fought for the Commonwealth title. He had a talented, young upstart in Jason Cunningham standing across the ring, not the expected journeyman import, and it wasn’t going to be a so-called “showcase fight” for either combatant.

Cunningham radiated confidence. He had never tasted defeat, and, thus, maybe he had not learned the ability to cope whilst under attack, or maybe that’s how he stayed unblemished in the first place. Maybe Burkinshaw, the man four years his senior, boxing on four days notice, in the hostile territory of Doncaster, couldn’t match the advantages that would surely be asseverate to the local boy’s victory.

That was never the case. Although, for patches of the fight, the road win might have been slipping away for Burkinshaw.

Nonetheless, he preserved through a busted nose, a cut on his head, and broke the heart of his undefeated opponent, Cunningham. With his continued surge through the later rounds, Burkinshaw won a split decision in one of the best fights of 2014.

“Becoming the Commonwealth champion means so so much to me.” said Burkinshaw, who is still astonished by the circumstances surrounding this championship win, but was long bracing for his time to come.

It just so happened to be on the 6th of September in 2014. Fate gave him his perhaps his most gratifying moment, and a cherished memory to hold close as he fights towards even greater avail.

“I knew in my mind that I was going to win. I’ve had the belief since I began boxing over 20 years ago. I grew up with boxing stars around me such as “Prince” Naseem Hamed, Ryan Rhodes, Paul “Silky” Jones, Herol “Bomber” Graham, Clinton Woods, and when you have so many successful people around you it make you want to work as hard as them and rise to their level.”

Burkinshaw’s journey is not yet complete. Martin Ward vacated the Commonwealth title due to injury, and was originally postulated to box for the vacant belt, which, of course, puts him at the front of the line. A fight with Ward is being negotiated for December in Sheffield, and should be officially announced soon. As for the future, a rematch with Cunningham is always possible, seeing the valiant effort he put forth. There are plenty of other options across the world, too, as Burkinshaw looks to continue fighting his way up the ranks on an international scale.

“Now that I am a champion, I am going to defend my Bantamweight Commonwealth belt then move on to more titles at even higher levels. I have said from the beginning that I am more than capable of beating the champions, and I have the mind and heart to do it with the help of my team, my family, and my supporters, I will continue to succeed.” confidently stated Burkinshaw.

Right now, those possibilities haven’t been explored to much depth. And while, for Burkinshaw, these times have been that of immense celebration, they have been struck by great tragedy as well. Former Burkinshaw sparring partner, 8-3 professional boxer Jerome Wilson, was badly injured in his brave battle with Serge Ambomo of Cameroon.

Ambomo stopped Wilson after six rounds of a brutal and eventually calamitous battle, and sent him out of the ring on a stretcher.

Wilson underwent emergency surgery for brain injuries sustained in the fight. This saved the life of Wilson, 29, who remains hospitalized in a medically-induced coma.

“Jerome is down to earth, such a nice kid.” said Burkinshaw, referring to his friend. “He would do anything to help you out.”

Wilson is a family man, and, through tough times, donations would be welcomed to help with medical expenses. Cheques made payable to M.L.Boyce can be sent to Coldwell Boxing, Olympic House, 131 Masbrough Street, Rotherham, S60 1HW, and you can also donate funds via PayPal to hunbusfield@hotmail.co.uk. Your charitableness is appreciated.

Fight of year candidate Wright vs Bujaj on MSG tonight

Brooklyn, NY (September 19, 2014) Star of David Promotions is exceedingly pleased and excited to announce that Mid-Atlantic area fight fans will now be able to check out one of the contenders for 2014 Fight of the Year, the cruiserweight tussle between Junior Wright and Steve Bujaj. This bout thrilled boxing fanatics who saw the two men engage in the heated scrap in Brooklyn.

MSG Network will show that entire Wright-Bujaj scrap, and a ton more action from the early summer show put together by Dmitriy Salita, the fighter/promoter who is happy to be able to showcase his fights on the home of the NBA Knicks and the NHL Rangers.

Viewers can tune in on September 19th at 10pm and the show will also
run September 20th at 7pm.

“Junior Wright versus Steve Bujaj was the best live fight I have ever
seen,” Salita said of a contest for which the WBC International
cruiserweight title was on the line. “It is rare that a fight lives up
to it’s hype but in this case, it exceeded all expectations and then
some. MSG has a long and rich tradition of great fights staged in the
center of the world for boxing, New York City. I am grateful that MSG
will televise this show and New York City boxing fans will get a chance
to see what “Brooklyn Brawl” is all about.

“MSG Network is glad to team up with the Dimitriy Salita and Star of
David Promotions to telecast the thrilling fight between cruiserweights
Junior Wright and Steve Bujaj,” said Ocean MacAdams, senior vice
president, programming, MSG Networks. “We are proud of the classic
fights we telecast on MSG, and this candidate for ‘fight of the year’
is a must-watch for boxing fans.”

Besides the main event fight fans will see world class prospects Steve
Martinez, a two-fisted closer who has trouble getting fights because
boxers fear his power; Dimash Niyazov, a slick stylist; and future
heavyweight superstar Jarrell Miller, who combines power and charisma
in a way which has some insiders tabbing him as a future heavyweight
champion. All are NYC residents climbing their way up the pro ranks to
a world title. Also, pay special attention to unbeaten Russian amateur
standout Alexey Zubov, now living in California, and fighting as a
cruiserweight.

“I fought on MSG myself, winning the Golden Gloves, and as a pro, the
fan recognition that it brings is incredible,” Salita said. “I am
grateful that MSG will bring much needed exposure to these talented,
hungry New York-based fighters.”

NONITO DONAIRE AND NICHOLAS WALTERS BATTLE FOR THE WBA FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE ON GOLOVKIN-RUBIO CHAMPIONSHIP CARD

Nonito_Donaire
LOS ANGELES (September 19, 2014) — Top Rank® announced today that 2012 Fighter of the Year and four-division world champion NONITO “The Filipino Flash” DONAIRE and undefeated world champion NICHOLAS “The Axe Man” WALTERS will battle it out to determine the undisputed World Boxing Association (WBA) featherweight world champion. Donaire vs. Walters will take place Saturday, October 18, at StubHub! Center in Carson, Calif. It will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing, beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT. The telecast will also feature WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin defending his titles against World Boxing Council (WBC) interim middleweight champion Marco Antonio “El Veneno” Rubio. Golovkin vs. Rubio and its undercard are presented by K2 Promotions and GGG Promotions, in association with Promociones Del Pueblo

Donaire and Walters boast a combined record of 57-2 (41 KOs) — a winning percentage of 97% and a victory by knockout ratio of 72%. When it comes to these two world featherweight champions, “You could have knocked me over with a feather,” is more than just a figure of speech!

“I am very excited for this fight. We are doing everything we can to be ready for everything Walters brings on October 18,” said Donaire.

“This is my dream fight. It’s now the time to show everyone who is the best 126 pound world champion in the entire world,” declared Walters.

“The featherweight division has a rich history with epic matchups, said Todd duBoef, president of Top Rank. “Nonito Donaire and Nicholas Walters are two of the great champions in the division today. This promises to be an entertaining, exciting world title unification battle.”

“Nonito Donaire is a four-division world champion and former fighter of the year, who always delivers for fans by challenging the toughest competition, which is precisely what he’ll be facing when he fights undefeated power-puncher Nicholas Walters in a superb featherweight championship co-feature on October 18 at the StubHub Center in Carson, CA, live on HBO World Championship Boxing,” said Peter Nelson, vice president, programming, HBO Sports.

Donaire (33-2, 21 KOs), a native of General Santos City, Philippines, now living in Las Vegas, has been a consensus Top-10 pound-for-pound fighter for several years. He returned to the top of the mountain as a world champion in his last fight, on May 31, at The Venetian Macao, dethroning defending WBA featherweight champion Simphiwe Vetyeka via a vicious five-round technical decision. His banner year in 2012 included four world championship victories. He beat former world champion Israel Vazquez, Jr. to capture the vacant WBO junior featherweight title, then unified the title by defeating IBF junior featherweight champion Jeffrey Mathebula. Donaire collected his third belt of the year by knocking out WBC Diamond Belt super bantamweight champion Toshiaki Nishioka, ending Nishioka’s eight-year, 16-bout, winning streak. Donaire concluded his magnificent year by blasting out Mexican icon Jorge Arce in the third round and sealing his 2012 Fighter of the Year honors while extending his 12-year, 30-bout winning streak. He lost his title to undefeated Cuban sensation and WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux in a title unification bout at a sold-out Radio City Music Hall on April 13, 2013. Career highlights for Donaire also include knockout victories of defending IBF flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan, former WBA bantamweight champion Wladimir Sidorenko, and defending WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel, ending Montiel’s 25-bout winning streak. That victory was named the 2011 Knockout of the Year. Donaire’s ended 2013 with a ninth-round knockout victory of Darchinyan in their eagerly-awaited rematch. Donaire has held a world title every year dating back to 2007. Three of his last four victories have been by way of knockout.

Walters (24-0, 20 KOs), of Montego Bay, Jamaica, enters this fight having won 10 of his last 11 fights by knockout. He captured the vacant WBA featherweight title on December 12, 2012, knocking out Daulis Presscott (26-1, 19 KOs) in the seventh round. He has successfully defended the title twice — both by knockout — stopping Alberto Garza and former two-division world champion Vic Darchinyan in the fourth and fifth rounds, respectively. A former amateur standout who collected gold medals at the 2007 Pan American Games Qualifier III and the 2005 and 2007 Caribbean Championships, Walters is known for his expert boxing skills and movement and two-fisted punching power that are at a caliber of a much higher weight class.

Remaining tickets to the Golovkin-Rubio/ Donaire-Walters world championship doubleheader, priced at $210, $105, $53 and $27, plus applicable service charges, are available online at www.AXS.com, by phone at 888-9AXS-TIX (888-929-7849) and www.StubHubCenter.com. 13th annual Fight To Educate OFFICIAL RESULTS

MANCHESTER, N.H. (September 17, 2014) – Vermont junior middleweight Chis Gilbert (12-1, 9 KOs) edged previously undefeated Steven Matthews (4-1, 2 KOs) by way of an eight-round decision in tonight’s main event on the 13th annual Fight To Educate Pro-Am show at Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Matthews, fighting out of Greensboro (NC), held a decisive advantage early in the fight until Gilbert caught him with a powerful right that sent him to the canvas for the lone knockdown of the evening. Matthews barely beat the count and was saved by the bell. The two fighters went back and forth the remainder of the fight in which the single knockdown was the difference (76-75 on all three judges’ scorecards.

In the co-feature, Whitman (MA) super middleweight Mark “The Italian Bazooka” DeLuca (11-0, 8 KOs) scored a technical knockout victory, decking Gundrick “Sho-Gun” King (19-12, 11 KOs) with a vicious body shot. Referee Dave Greenwood stopped the fight at 2:39 of the third round. DeLuca, who is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who was a machine gunner in Afghanistan, had hammered King with a relentless body attack from the opening bell.

Fight To Educate, presented in part this year by Matrix Aerospace, is a unique charity event that combines a love of boxing with the vision of assisting children and seniors in need who without fundraisers like this could be ‘down for the count.’ During the past 12 years, Fight To Educate has raised more than $750,000 in donations benefiting local New Hampshire non-profit organizations.

This year’s attending “Legends” were former world middleweight champion Vito Antuofermo (50-7-2, 21 KOs), world heavyweight title challengers Chuck “Bayonne Bleeder” Wepner (25-14-2, 17 KOs) and Earnie “The Acorn” Shavers (74-14-1, 68 KOs), and two-time World Boxing Association heavyweight champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz (44-9-1, 30 KOs)

Portland (ME) super middleweight Russell “The Haitian Sensation” Lamour (10-0, 5 KOs) kept his undefeated record intact when Dennis Ogboo (7-8, 6 KOs) was unable to answer the bell for the third round.

Popular junior welterweight Brandon “The Cannon” Berry (7-0, 5 KOs), fighting out of West Forks, Maine, remained unbeaten with a first round stoppage of Theo “The Unholy Terror” Desjardin (0-4), of North Attleboro, Massachusetts. Berry, who is the only fighter to appear in the Fight To Educate as an amateur and professional, dropped Desjardin with a straight right hand. He beat the count but the referee halted the fight when Desjardon stood on wobbly legs.

In the amateur matches, light flyweight Jen Amato, of Keene (NH), won a three-round decision over Felecia O’Brien, of Boston, in the amateur Fight of the Night. Amato was selected as Boxer of the Night.

Manchester (NH) middleweight Ryan Clark won a three-round decision against Ricky Ford, of Claremont (NH), while 92-pound Junior Olympian Angel Tricoch won a three-round decision over Wyatt Stearns, of Monroe (ME).

Proceeds from the 13h annual Fight To Educate will benefit SEE Science Center (www.see-sciencecenter.org), The Bobby Stephens Fund for Education (www.stepheneducationfund.com), and New Horizons for New Hampshire.

RAGING BABE & PPFBOXING DELIVER SUCCESSFUL SOIREE FOR WOMEN IN BOXING, KENNEDY CUNNINGHAM HEART TRANSPLANT FUNDRAISER

Las Vegas (September 19, 2014) – This past Friday, September 12th 2014, The Raging Babe Soiree took place at the Sugar Factory, inside the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas. Hosted by the first lady of boxing Jackie Kallen, forty influential women in the boxing industry gathered for dinner, networking opportunities, fun, and most importantly for a great cause.

“The Raging Babe Soiree was a raging success. To be among so many strong women, all connected to the world of boxing, was a treat for all of us. The energy in the room was palpable and the evening seemed to go forever as more and more people joined us to celebrate the sport we love,” expressed Jackie Kallen.

Michelle Rosado, president of Raging Babe added, “The soiree was fantastic. It was a chance for all us women in the sport of boxing to let our hair down and be in each other’s company. The event symbolized everything that Raging Babe stands for and what I looked to create with our very first event back in 2013. We have formed our own little family and I couldn’t be happier to be part of such a loyal group of women who have supported me, and each other no matter what. The turnout was amazing. Besides having a phenomenal time, they all appreciated being genuinely recognized. This event made me more proud because we were able to raise money for the Kennedy Cunningham Heart Transplant Fundraiser. That was truly the icing on the cake.”

PPFBOXING was on hand to educate the women on the importance of boxers protecting themselves and their family outside of the ring. PPFBOXING features programs for boxers such as 401k, pension, and life insurance. They also provide branding, licensing and promotional opportunities with the biggest companies in the world. The goal of PPFBOXING is to shorten the time of a boxer in the ring, and increase their portfolio outside the ring. Visit www.ppfhome.com for more information or contact Ralph Velez at 602-695-5798.

Due to generous financial contributions from sponsors, everyone in attendance was provided with a fantastic dinner, bottomless signature cocktails & champagne, gift bags, and most importantly unforgettable memories. The combination of angel donations and sponsorship contributions helped raise a significant amount of money to be donated to the Kennedy Cunningham Heart Transplant Fundraiser. A special thanks to: Grand Marnier, Professional Pension Funds, Elite Boxing Enterprises, GFX Solutions, Frank Galarza, Gabriel Rosado, Benefit Cosmetics, and WON Promotions.

Details on the next Raging Babe event will be announced shortly.
