IRON BOY PROMOTIONS ANNOUNCES IRON BOY 16: EL PASO

EL PASO, TEXAS — September 18, 2014 — On the heels of its fourteenth consecutive event in Phoenix, Iron Boy Promotions branches out to El Paso, Texas, where it promises to deliver the same quality and explosive action as it has in Arizona. Fight night is set to take place Friday, October 10th at the El Paso Coliseum.

In the main event bout, Michael Finney (12-1, 10KO) returns to the ring to showcase his devastating punching power. “I competed in Texas as an amateur, and am really looking forward to fighting in front of a Texas crowd,” said Finney on fighting for the first time as a professional in Texas. “It’s a privilege to be fighting in the main event, and I’m going to put on a great show for the fans in Texas.”

In a featured bout, David Benavidez (6-0, 6KO), brother of NABF Youth Welterweight Champion Jose Benavidez, Jr., will be making his United States debut. Benavidez is trained by his father, Jose Benavidez, Sr. in Gilbert, Arizona.

El Paso’s Philip Schoonover will make his debut against Arizona’s Keith Busch (1-2, 1KO). Las Cruces’ Adam Vasquez (2-0, 0KO) will face Phoenix’s Estefan McCray (Debut) in a four round bout. Las Cruces fighter Johnny Guillen (2-0, 1KO) and Phoenix’s Julio Sarinana (3-0, 0KO) will put their undefeated records on the line in a four round contest. Jorge Pinon will face Alfonso Olivera in what will be both fighters’ debut bouts.

Phoenix resident Joe Martell (2-9-1, 2KO), who originally hails from El Paso will round out the card, along with exciting Phoenix fighter Emmanuel Nieves (1-0, 0KO), in separate bouts.

“We are proud to enter the boxing promotions family of El Paso and show the city the intensity, excitement and show value that has caught the attention of Top Rank in Phoenix to El Paso,” said Iron Boy Promotions’ Director of Texas Operations Rico Velez. “This will be our way of taking current El Paso boxing promoters the distance and raising the bar. The people of El Paso deserve a great show and will get it with Iron Boy 16: Texas vs. Arizona on October 10th.”

The official weigh-in for Iron Boy 16 will be at Cabo Joe’s at 7942 Gateway East on Thursday, October 9th at 4pm.

Tickets for Iron Boy 16 are priced at $10, 25, 40 and $60, and are available at www.iron-boy.com or via Ticketmaster.

Return of the Saint: Groves ready to make a statement on Saturday night

George Groves
George Groves (19-2, 15 KOs) came face-to-face with Christopher Rebrasse (22-2-3, 6 KOs) at today’s final press conference ahead of their WBC World title final eliminator, European Super Middleweight and WBC Silver Championship fight on September 20 at the SSE Arena, Wembley.

‘The Saint’ is ready to get his world title ambitions back on track starting with victory on Saturday night. ‘We’ve assessed Rebrasse as a fighter and we know the challenges he poses,’’ said Groves. ‘’He is big for weight, throws a lot of punches and needs to be taken seriously. But this is my moment. I’m going to get in there, get the win and show all the super middleweights in the world that I’m back and I mean business.’’

Rebrasse, the reigning and defending champion, has plans of his own. ‘’I’m not a big talker,’’ said the Frenchman. ‘’I prefer to do my talking in the ring. But what I will say is that I’m here to defend my titles and beat Groves on his home turf. He is a good fighter but I have trained very hard. He is just the next step for me on my way to the top.’’

Said promoter Kalle Sauerland: ‘’We are all looking forward to an amazing show on Saturday night. We will have spectacular walk-ins and a great main event. The WBC has confirmed that this is the final eliminator to become the mandatory challenger of Anthony Dirrell. Rebrasse is the number three in the WBC rankings, he is the European Champion, so there is everything at stake.’’

There has been much said by Dirrell about a potential fight with Groves and while the Hammersmith-boxer remains focused on the task at hand he did have this to say about the newly crowned WBC Champion: ‘’Dirrell has been doing a lot of talking. He has said that he won’t fight me, that I don’t deserve a shot but I think that just proves he’s scared. We’ve had a letter from the WBC confirming a mandatory shot if I win this fight. Once I’m done with Rebrasse I’m coming for him.’’

Promoter Kalle Sauerland is ready to back his fighter in a World title clash with Dirrell should Groves prove successful on Saturday night. “We’ve got the money, we’ve got the talent, we’ve got the fans, we’ve got the market. We´re ready for Dirrell,” said Sauerland. ”But make no mistake, we have to focus on Saturday. We must not get ahead of ourselves. But I am confident that George will take care of business on Saturday night. He is one of the most exciting fighters on the planet.”

Return of the Saint: Groves vs. Rebrasse will be shown live on Sky Sports 2 from 8pm. Tickets are available via ssearena.co.uk and axs.com or by calling 08448 24 48 24

Team Andrade Waiting for phone to ring

Andrade UK 2
PROVIDENCE (September 18, 2014) – Undefeated World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior middleweight champion Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade (21-0, 14 KOs) and his team are patiently waiting to hear about his next fight.

Negotiations are ongoing between Andrade’s co-promoters, Banner Promotions and Star Boxing, with Top Rank and HBO officials regarding a potential fight for a vacant WBO middleweight title fight against No. 1 contender and unbeaten Russian Olympian, Matt Korobov.

Andrade was also mentioned by Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar de la Hoya as one of three potential candidates to fight junior middleweight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

“We want to thank all of loyal fans for their support,” Andrade’s head trainer and father Paul Andrade said. “They are the only ones who understand how our backs have been put against the wall. Everybody in boxing seemed to react to the news about Demetrius fighting Korobov for the vacant 160-pound WBO title. I’d like to get the facts straight. We were not aware of that fight, nor were we aware of the petition to the WBO to move up to fight for its middleweight title. I spoke to Artie Pelullo (Banner Promotions), who informed me that an opportunity had popped up, and that he wanted to beat (Bob) Arum (Top Rank) to the punch. He couldn’t get a hold of us in advance but he has left us an option to take a fight.

“Demetrius is a warrior and we don’t walk away from good fights. As a matter of fact, we run towards fights others run away from. We will accept the fight against Korobov, provided Demetrius is paid at least the bare minimum, according to his contract. Negotiations are going on right now. It’s a shame that two days after the WBO selected Demetrius to fight Korobov for the middleweight title, the top 154-pounders came out of the woodwork to start making fights. I guess real men are in the middleweight division. It looks like ‘Canelo’ is going to fight Joshua Clottey, (James) Kirkland is fighting (Gabriel) Rosado. Nobody at 154 pounds would step-up and to challenge Demetrius for his WBO title belt.”

Andrade was particularly upset with Oscar de la Hoya for using Andrade by announcing he was one of three candidates to fight Alvarez. “No disrespect to Clottey, who was a great 140 and 147-pounder, but which fight would the people paying for tickets like to see: Alvarez vs. Andrade or Alvarez vs. Clottey,” Andrade asked rhetorically. “I guess ‘Canelo’ isn’t interested in trying to regain a 154-pound world title belt. I want to let everyone know that we’re still open to fighting ‘Canelo’ if he is willing to step-up to fight Andrade. He wants a soft fight to set-up a mega-fight with (Miguel) Cotto. Demetrius is too high risk for the top 154-pounders to fight. It’s like pushing a rock uphill. Oscar never should have said Demetrius was on the short list to fight ‘Canelo’ because he didn’t mean it. We’re not letting them off the hook, though. We haven’t signed to move up to 160 yet and we’re open to fighting ‘Canelo’ at any given time. And if ‘Canelo’-Clottey is made, it’s only going to be just one more disappointing night of boxing for fans. ”

Andrade remains baffled about why some of the top junior middleweights have avoided his son like the plague. “The closer we run to them, the faster they run away from us,” Andrade continued. “It’s like trying to put two magnets together from opposite ends. I guess a world title fight doesn’t mean much to them.

“In the past, we were criticized about opponents we fought, but that was when Demetrius was a fighter in development. School is out, we’ve graduated. We’re willing and able to take on all challengers for Demetrius’ 154-pound world title belt. Why aren’t these guys criticized for not taking a fight with Demetrius?”

UNDEFEATED JUNIOR MIDDLEWEIGHT PROSPECT FRANK GALARZA HEADLINES EVENT AT RESORTS WORLD CASINO, IN JAMAICA, NY

New York, NY (9/18/14) – This Saturday, September 20, junior middleweight prospect “Notorious” Frank Galarza (14-0-2, 9 KO’s) is back in action, as he takes on the tough Jonathan Batista (14-3, 7 KO’s), in the main event of a stacked card at Resorts World Casino, in Jamaica, NY, presented by New Legend Boxing. The undercard will feature the ring returns of junior middleweight Alantez Fox and junior featherweight Danny Aquino as well. Once adversaries, Galarza and Fox are now fighting under the same promotional umbrella of DiBella Entertainment and New Legend Boxing, along with Aquino.

Fighting out of Brooklyn, NY, Galarza, a New York Golden Gloves champion, quickly became a fan favorite on the local club show circuit with his aggressive, brawling style, starting with a vicious 20-second TKO victory in his September 2010 pro debut. Three of his last four wins have been over undefeated prospects, in which Galarza has picked up the New York State and WBC Latino junior middleweight titles. This year, he gained national television exposure by twice appearing on Showtime’s popular “ShoBox” series, scoring a highlight reel second-round knockout over the 14-0 John Thompson in January and a dominant eight-round unanimous decision over the 8-0 Canadian Sebastien Bouchard in May. Against the battle-tested Dominican Batista, Galarza will be competing in his first 10-round contest.

“I’m winding down the final preparations of training camp now and I’m just ready to go on Saturday,” said an enthusiastic Galarza. “My opponent, Jonathan Batista, is a durable guy, he’s fought some tough guys like Kermit Cintron and John Thompson. I’m looking to get my 15th victory and I’m excited to be fighting in my first 10-round bout. This will be my sixth time fighting at Resorts, in Queens, which has become a home base for me. It’s always a pleasure to fight locally and give my fans what they want to see.”

At 6’5″, Fox (12-0-1, 4 KO’s) is a tall, slick boxer with exceptional physical tools that include a 79-inch reach. With 10 years of amateur experience, building a 165-35 record, Fox, from Forestville, MD, made his pro debut in 2010. Trained by his father Troy Fox, Alantez has impressive wins over the highly regarded Julius Kennedy and Zain Shah, both via unanimous decision. Following an extended absence from the ring, the 22-year-old Fox is ready to take the division by storm as he climbs up the rankings. His first hurdle will be Jonathan Garcia in a six-round junior middleweight contest.

“I’m really looking forward to getting back in the ring. It’s been over a year now and I’m determined to show everyone what I can do and hopefully impress the fans and everyone at Resorts on Saturday,” said Fox. “I never stopped training, even though I’ve been out of the ring for so long, but come fight night, I’ll be 110 percent ready. I never sleep on my opponents, and I know he’s a tough guy. I’m just ready to get back on track and fight on a steady schedule to build myself into a contender and title contention.”

Both Galarza and Fox won their first seven fights before facing off against one another at Resorts, back on September 22, 2012. With the vacant New York State junior middleweight title at stake, Galarza and Fox waged a fast-paced exhilarating war for eight rounds. Galarza had early success with his overhand right, but Fox then established a distance using his long jab to dictate the action. Landing his powerful left hook, Fox evened up the fight on the scorecards, leading to a draw verdict. Since then, Galarza has won another seven fights with a draw, while Fox has picked up five straight victories.

“Fox is a helluva fighter, a true talent,” complimented Galarza. “Our fight was one for the record books, probably the best fight they’ve ever had at Resorts. We were two undefeated fighters putting it all on the line. We’ve both definitely improved since then and it benefits us both greatly to be a part of DiBella Entertainment and New Legend Boxing. I believe they will move us very well. When the time is right and we’re both at a higher level, I can envision us having a rematch, but on a much larger scale with bigger stakes.”

“It was a tough fight against Galarza,” reminisced Fox, “but I remember winning, even though they called it a draw. The fight should actually have been televised, it was that good. We’re both under the same promotional banner now because they recognized my talent. I’m sure that with DiBella Entertainment and New Legend Boxing, we’ll get pushed in the right direction with meaningful fights down the road and I’m extremely happy and grateful for the opportunity. If the rematch against Galarza comes, it should be on a big stage for the right money and I look forward to it happening some day.”

Also appearing on Saturday’s undercard in a six-round junior featherweight bout will be Mexican Danny Aquino, of Meriden, Conn., fighting for the first time in 18 months. A strong and relentless fighter, Aquino turned pro in 2009, after a stellar amateur career that saw him compile a 95-12 record. Having recently signed an exclusive co-promotional contract with DiBella Entertainment and New Legend Boxing, Aquino (15-2, 10 KO’s) is eager to prove that he is an elite fighter.

“It’s a pleasure working with Frank Galarza, Alantez Fox and Danny Aquino, and co-promoting with New Legend Boxing,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “We wish all three of our fighters success on Saturday and we hope for a great night for New Legend Boxing. The big winners will be the fans in attendance. We’re looking for another explosive knockout from the ‘Notorious’ Galarza!”

“We are excited to have Galarza, Fox and Aquino on the same card,” said Felipe Gomez, of New Legend Boxing. “It was exactly two years ago at the same venue that Galarza and Fox went to war with each other in the ring resulting in a draw. Now, they will meet again on same card but against different opponents. We are proud to be working in conjunction with DiBella Entertainment by adding these fine and talented boxers to our stable of fighters.”

Pacquiao-Algieri PPV Undercard Packs Plenty of Int’l Intrigue

Shiming_DeLaRosa_140719_003a
MACAO (September 18, 2014) — World champions VASYL LOMACHENKO and JESSIE VARGAS and China’s most iconic athlete, undefeated Top-Five contender ZOU SHIMING, will be featured in exciting battles on the MANNY “Pacman” PACQUIAO vs. CHRIS ALGIERI World Welterweight Championship pay-per-view undercard. Promoted by Top Rank® and Sands China Ltd., in association with MP Promotions, Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing, Banner Promotions and Tecate, the Pacquiao-Algieri world welterweight championship event will take place Saturday, November 22, at The Venetian® Macao’s Cotai Arena, and will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View®, beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET / 6:00 p.m. PT.

Six different nations will be represented by the eight fighters on the live pay-per-view telecast.

Lomachenko, of Ukraine, will make the first defense of his WBO featherweight title against No. 1 contender and mandatory challenger Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo of Thailand. Vargas, of Las Vegas, NV., will be defending his WBA super lightweight title against former world champion Antonio DeMarco, of Mexico. Top-five contenders Zou, of China, and Kwanpichit Onesongchaigym, of Thailand, will be battling in a 12-round WBO flyweight world title elimination bout. These six gladiators boast a combined record of 142-5-3 (79 KOs) — a winning percentage of 95% and a victory by knockout ratio of 56%.

“We are very proud to present these three significant international fights on the pay-per-view undercard. Boxing is a worldwide sport and this card reflects that,” said Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum.

“I am very happy and excited to have become a world champion in my third professional fight,” said Lomachenko. “I just followed the plan for the world title fight against Gary Russell – work the body, make him fight as much as possible and then go to the head. Russell was very fast and I had to take my time. I felt I hurt him a few times and I did not feel his power at all. That was a big win for my country and I know that they enjoyed it very much.”

“My opponent, Antonio DeMarco, is a tough, rugged fighter who comes to fight,” said Vargas. “I know this will be a fight that fans throughout the world will enjoy. This is very exciting for our team to be part of an event of this magnitude. I plan on bringing my world title belt back to Las Vegas.”

“The goal to win another world championship and bring it back to Mexico are the reasons why I keep fighting and this title fight against Jessie Vargas is a great opportunity to do just that,” said DeMarco. “I am sure that Freddie Roach will have me ready to win the fight and because of our styles I am sure this fight with Vargas will be one that the fans will enjoy.”

“This will be my first time fighting in a bout that is scheduled for 12 rounds. It will be the toughest test of my skills as a professional,” said Zou. “As we all know, the boxing atmosphere in Thailand is awesome. I watched videos of my opponent’s fights where he performed fiercely and bravely. It is no surprise that he is undefeated. I respect his strength and his skills . This fight is so important because so much is at stake — most of all the opportunity to fight for the world title with a victory on November 22. I will make this the best training camp I have ever had so I can give my best performance ever.”

The greatest amateur boxer of his era and arguably of all time, two-time Ukrainian Olympic gold medalist Lomachenko (2-1, 1 KO), of Odessa, captured the vacant WBO featherweight title on June 21, winning a scintillating majority decision over the previously unbeaten Gary Russell Jr. It was Lomachenko’s third professional bout, tying him with Thailand’s Saensak Muangsurin for fewest fights to win a world title. Muangsurin won a junior welterweight title in 1975, also in his third professional fight. Russell, a former U.S. Olympian, was totally blitzed by Lomachenko, battered around the ring throughout the fight. From the outset of his professional career, Lomachenko made it known that he was ready for the best in his division. He made his professional debut in 2013 knocking out the WBO’s No. 7-rated featherweight contender Jose Luis Ramirez (24-2-2, 15 KOs) in the fourth round of a bout that was scheduled for 10. Last March, in his second professional bout, he challenged WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido, losing a split decision to the heavier defending champion whose title had been stripped because he could not make the weight limit. Lomachenko first gained international renown by winning gold medals in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2012 London Games as a featherweight and a lightweight, respectively.

Piriyapinyo (51-1, 33 KOs), made his pro debut in 2003 and captured the Asian featherweight title the following year in just his fifth professional bout. His only blemish is a world title decision loss to the legendary defending WBA featherweight champion Chris John in 2012. He enters his second world championship fight world-rated No. 1 and riding a two-year, eight-bout winning streak, including six victories by way of knockout.

Vargas (25-0, 9 KOs), of Las Vegas, NV., will be fighting outside the U.S. for the first time in his professional career. He captured the WBA super lightweight title on the April 12 Pacquiao-Timothy Bradley Jr world welterweight title rematch in Las Vegas, winning a unanimous decision over undefeated defending champion Khabib Allakhverdiev. It was a close and competitive fight that proved Vargas’ grit as he bit down hard during the championship rounds to pull away with the victory and the world championship belt. His impressive resume includes victories over former world champions Stevie Forbes and Vivian Harris and top contenders Josesito Lopez, Lucky Boy Omotoso, Ray Narh and Lanardo Tyner. In his last fight, on August 2, Vargas successfully defended his title against undefeated contender Anton Novikov via a unanimous decision.

DeMarco (31-3-1, 23 KOs), of Tijuana, Mexico, captured the WBC lightweight championship crown on his second try, winning the vacant title with an 11th-round stoppage of top-rated contender Jorge Linares in 2011. DeMarco successfully defended the title twice during his one-year reign — both by knockout — against Miguel Roman and John Molina. Since moving up in weight, he has won three straight fights, with two of those victories coming by way of knockout. In his last fight, on August 23, DeMarco won a 10-round unanimous decision over Landro Tyner.

Zou (5-0, 1 KO), from Guizhou, China, and trained by Hall of Famer Freddie Roach, returns to ring fresh from his most impressive professional victory — a 10-round unanimous decision victory over Top-10 contender Luis De La Rosa to capture the vacant WBO International flyweight title. Stepping up to his first 10-round bout, Zou vs. De La Rosa took place on July 19 at Cotai Arena and showed the world that Zou had developed into a world title contender. Zou is currently world-rated No. 4 by the WBA, No. 5 by the WBO and No. 6 by the WBA. He won his professional debut April 6, 2013 at Fists of Gold, via a dominant four-round unanimous decision over gritty Eleazar Valenzuela. He followed that up with six-round unanimous decision victories last year over Jesus Ortega and Juan Toscano July 27 at Fists of Gold II and November 24 at The Clash in Cotai, respectively, and celebrated his 2014 debut with his first professional knockout February 22 at Ring of Gold, stopping Yokthong Kokietgym in the seventh round. All of his professional bouts have taken place at the Cotai Arena. One of the most popular Olympic athletes in China, Zou was the world’s greatest amateur light flyweight, capturing gold medals in the World Amateur Championships in 2005, 2007 and 2011, along with gold medals in the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympic Games. He also owns an Olympic bronze medal from the 2004 games, making him his nation’s first Olympic medallist in boxing as well as its first boxing gold medallist in the World Amateur Championships and the Olympics.

Onesongchaigym (27-0-2, 12 KOs), of Buriram, Thailand, made his professional debut in 2010 and captured the WBO Oriental junior bantamweight title the following year knocking out Fredirex Rodriguez in the seventh round. After one successful defense he moved down one division where he captured the WBO Oriental flyweight title in 2012, which he has held for the past two years. Six of his last 10 victories have been by knockout, including his last one, a seventh-round TKO of Oscar Raknafa on June 6, to retain his title. Onesongchaigym is currently world-rated No. 3 by the WBO.

UFC FIGHT NIGHT JAPAN: HUNT vs NELSON *MEDIA QUOTES*

ufc_title-belt_206
Las Vegas, Nevada – Two of the biggest, baddest men on the planet will finally throwdown this Saturday, as Mark Hunt and Roy Nelson collide atop of perhaps the most stacked UFC FIGHT PASS card thus far.

Hunt vs Nelson leads the UFC FIGHT NIGHT: JAPAN card which also features the undefeated lightweight Myles Jury taking on the legendary “Fireball Kid” Takanori Gomi, former women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate taking on unbeaten newcomer Rin Nakai plus the return of both Yoshihiro “Sexyama” Akiyama and Ultimate Fighter winner Amir Sadollah in welterweight clash.

Fans around the world can catch the action live – and then on-demand – on UFCFIGHTPASS.com, the UFC’s digital streaming service.

MARK HUNT ON FIGHTING ROY NELSON: “I’m looking forward to fighting Roy. He’s one of the best fighters in the top 10, and this win will take me closer to a title shot. I’ve not really got a gameplan for him, other than to put a hurting on him. I’m going to put hurt on him until he can’t take no more, stops being competitive, and either blacks out or the referee tells him he can’t take no more. I can knock anyone out, that’s just the way it is. So that makes for a simple gameplan, mate. I’m going in big and I’m going to knock his head off.”

MARK HUNT ON FIGHTING IN JAPAN: “I was working in a factory in Australia when I first got the chance to fight in kickboxing in Japan. I was paid $40,000, which was more than I’d make in over six months in the factory. I was like “Wow! This Japan is a pretty nice place!” And I had some success in kickboxing and then MMA, and the paydays just kept going up. Fighting in Japan changed my whole life. I’ll never forget the opportunities I had here and what the fans gave me. There’s still things I want to achieve in MMA, winning the UFC title, and I will put on a great show for these fans on Saturday.”

ROY NELSON ON FIGHTING MARK HUNT: “I respect Mark a lot, he’s got huge power and a great chin, and next to a title fight, this is the most exciting fight there is for me. I know the fans have been calling for this one for a long time. I’m actually surprised we haven’t fought already, but it is happening now and I’m almost as excited as the fans are for this.”

NELSON ON HUNT’S ‘HOMETOWN ADVANTAGE’: “Yeah, Hunt has a lot of fans here in Japan and probably knows a few people and places where he can get good food, things like that, but I just fought Big Nog (Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira) in Abu Dhabi (April 11) and he literally had his own gym out there, he had a place to stay, and once the fight started none of that mattered. I still knocked him out.”

NELSON ON WHETHER HE NEEDS TO TAKE THIS TO THE GROUND: “Yeah, I can wrestle, I can use submissions, but if I am honest I’m only interested in having a war with Mark and knocking him out. I haven’t done that (go in with a submission-based game plan) in eight, nine years. I prefer to knock people out. Mark has power and a good chin, too, so why would I want to make this a technical fight? The two big guys are going to throw punches – and let’s see what happens. What’s more exciting than that?”

TAKANORI GOMI ON BECOMING A VETERAN: “I want to get into the top 10 again and show the fans I am still a top fighter. I never think about the age difference, I only think about how I match up with other fighters. I was a kid fighting people my age once, and now I am the older one and it is me who is fighting the younger athletes. It doesn’t matter, age, the only thing that matters is who is the better fighter on the night.”

GOMI ON WHAT KEEPS HIM FIGHTING: “I am not thinking about retirement, I am thinking about winning the UFC title. I coach the next generation of fighters in Japan, but right now I am a fighter not a coach. I still have the UFC title (in my sights) and this fight will get me into the top 10 and I will go forward from there.”

MYLES JURY ON FACING A LEGEND: “I was a huge Gomi fan when I was a kid in high school. He’s a legend and this is a great opportunity for me to defeat an icon of the sport. Some fighters have shown too much respect in this situation, they show too much respect when they are in the Octagon with a legend, but I’m going to treat him just like any other opponent. All the pressure is on him, he’s got a lot of weight on his shoulders fighting in front of fans who’ve supported him all these years. I can just go in there and do my thing.”

MIESHA TATE ON WHAT IS AT STAKE FOR HER: “This is the fight where I prove where I really belong in the division. I’m coming back with a vengeance. I’m coming back not just to win a fight, but to make a statement as to where I stand in the division. I want to leave a performance where fans are saying “Wow, she’s better than ever.” I’ve worked my ass off on improving my game and I can’t wait to show off what I’ve been working on. I’m going in there to finish Nakai, I won’t accept anything other than a crushing victory Saturday night.”

TATE ON NAKAI: “I’m fighting a Japanese star, she’s actually the queen of Japanese MMA, in Japan. So I know this is hostile territory. She’s not made too many mistakes in her career so far. She’s 15-0-1, and that’s hard to do no matter who you are fighting, but I think I have her on experience. I’ve fought in the other girl’s hometown before, I’ve faced better opposition, and I’ve won the world title fighting a pound-for-pounder while I had a busted knee. I’ve done all these things while (Nakai) was here in Japan having things her own way. I’m expecting a tough fight, she looks very strong and has a compact build, but I’ve been in deeper waters than she has.”

NAKAI ON HOMETOWN ADVANTAGE: “I take very seriously the (title) of being a pioneer for Japanese female MMA. I don’t want to lose in front of all the Japanese fans. I am the Queen of Pancrase and I want to defend that (title) in the UFC.”

NAKAI ON TATE’S ASSERTION SHE HASN’T FACED TOP OPPOSITION: “I don’t care about the critics, I care about winning fights. That is what I have been able to do this far. I think I can fight as well as Miesha Tate does, I think I am as good as her. And that is all that matters – the fight on Saturday. The critics aren’t part of the fight. I trained so hard to make this UFC fight happen, and I am excited for everyone who has heard only about my name or seen my videos now gets to see me fight. Of course, I want to be the Queen of the UFC (UFC champion) but I always focus on the fight in front of me, and that is Tate.”

Mchunu-Wilson Final Press Conference Quotes

Kathy Duva
– Welcome everyone to the beautiful Foxwoods Resort Casino. This is going to be our fourth show on broadcast NBC. We are very proud to bring boxing back to network television. This card is going to bring a lot of excitement to the Saturday afternoon line-up. We plan on making boxing fans out of casual fans with this card.

Thank you to Foxwoods. I want to thank the commission. It is such a pleasure to work with the staff here. Tickets are still available through www.ticketmaster.com and through Foxwoods box office. Special discounts are still available. It is going to be an exciting afternoon of boxing. Come out, enjoy the fights and then take advantage of all that Foxwoods has to offer.

With these fights we have the potential for absolutely anything to happen. The cruiserweight division is what the heavyweight division used to be years ago. The most electrifying fights take place in this division. They are the same size that Joe Frazier was when he was in his prime. They changed the name of the heavyweight division. The current heavyweights are twice the size of what they used to be. People in the heavyweight division are outweighing their opponents by 50 pounds. I have struggled to understand why the cruiserweight division isn’t popular.

This is going to be a great fight. They are coming to win. That is what makes this sport so exciting.

– It is a great honor to be with the Main Events team. We are honored to be on NBC. It is a long way for us to come from South Africa but we do it because Mchunu is going to be a star. He will defend his title. Many people say the cruiserweight division isn’t interesting but Garrett is a great fighter. We’ve watched him. We aren’t overlooking him. Thabiso has worked hard to come and put on a show for the fight fans. We are going to bring the cruiserweight division alive again. We are going to make the cruiserweight division the one to watch.

Garrett Wilson & Rodney Rice

Garrett “The Ultimate Warrior” Wilson
– I want to thank Main Events for having me back on the card and Foxwoods for hosting this event. I have nothing but respect for Mchunu, he is an awesome fighter. He beat Eddie Chambers and I have the utmost respect for Eddie Chambers, so if he can beat Eddie I know he is a great fighter. I didn’t lose my belt. To me it is still MY belt. This to me is a defense of my belt. I trained hard. I am looking forward to an exciting fight. I want to once against become the NABF champion.

Rodney Rice, trainer of Wilson
– Thank you Kathy. I want to thank Main Events for bringing us back again and giving us this opportunity. We have a lot of respect for Mchunu. We trained real hard for him. This is going to be an awkward fight. Garrett has an awkward style. You can’t practice to fight him. You never know what he is going to bring.

Karl Dargan

Karl “Dynamite” Dargan
– I would like to thank Main Events and Angino Perez for taking the challenge. We had a great camp. I don’t know too much about Perez but I know he knows how to win. I don’t have too much to say I am just looking forward to Saturday.

Brother Naazim Richardson

Brother Naazim Richardson, trainer of Dargan
– I would like to thank everyone for coming out. I would like to thank Kathy and Main Events. I don’t know much about Perez. I watch the way a man carries himself. I am looking forward to the match-up and trying to figure out his style. Karl is an outstanding young kid. He is mature beyond his years. He has been around a lot of outstanding athletes and coaches. He is smart and that is his toughest weapon. I want the smartest. I am also looking forward to the main event Saturday. This is going to be an outstanding show for NBC.

Angino Perez

POPULAR TWO-TIME NEW YORK GOLDEN GLOVES CHAMPION EARL NEWMAN TO MAKE PRO DEBUT

New York, NY (9/18/14) – On Saturday, October 4th, DiBella Entertainment and Warriors Boxing will stage a thrilling SHOWTIME Boxing Special Edition headlined by reigning undefeated IBF champion Rances “Kid Blast” Barthelemy (20-0-0-1NC, 12KO’s) defending his super featherweight title against former world title challenger and IBF #3-rated Fernando Saucedo (52-5-3, 8KO’s). The event will air live on SHOWTIME beginning at 9 pm ET/PT from the Fox Theater at Foxwoods Resort Casino, in Mashantucket, Conn.

Appearing on the non-televised portion of the undercard will be popular Brooklynite and touted amateur Earl Newman making his highly anticipated pro debut. After culminating his amateur career with a 55-7 record, the powerful 23-year-old Newman, from Flatbush, is eager to begin his journey in the paid ranks.

“I’m excited to make my pro debut in a few weeks,” said Newman. “I’m training hard and I’m looking forward to showcasing my skills and making a good impression for the fans at Foxwoods. As an amateur, I competed in the 201lb. weight class, and I’ll be debuting at cruiserweight, but I’m looking to eventually work my way down to light heavyweight.”

Now trained by Aureliano Sosa out of the Flatbush Cops and Kids boxing gym, the 6’3″ Newman began boxing in 2010, initially to simply lose weight. His father took him to MMA and kickboxing gyms at first, but then it became apparent that Earl was better skilled at striking rather than wrestling, so he decided to strictly focus on boxing.

“In 2013, I really made my mark as an amateur, winning the New York Golden Gloves, the National Golden Gloves in Utah, the National PAL tournament in Oxnard, CA, and the World Golden Gloves in Waldorf, MD,” Newman stated. “I participated in the World Series of Boxing in Germany and I also made it to the finals of the European Championships in 2013 and again this year. After winning the New York Golden Gloves for the second time this past April, I made the decision to turn pro.”

It was while winning the 2014 New York Golden Gloves tournament, held at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, NY, that Newman caught the eye of promoter Lou DiBella.

“I covered Earl Newman as a commentator at this year’s New York Golden Gloves finals and was incredibly impressed,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “The fans in attendance at Foxwoods on October 4th will get to see the pro debut of a young man with star potential.”

“I’m thrilled that DiBella Entertainment has given me the opportunity to make my pro debut on their card. Lou noticed me while commentating at the Golden Gloves finals. He introduced himself and said he was real impressed with the way I fought. I look forward to great things ahead. I’d like to stay active and steadily improve the level of my opposition. I truly believe that I will prove myself to be one of the top tier light heavyweights. I’ll do my part as a fighter and hope everything else falls into place.”

Additional undercard bouts will be announced shortly.

Tickets, priced at $150, $90 and $45, are currently on sale and may be purchased online at Foxwoods.com, by calling the Foxwoods’ box office at 800-200-2882, or in person at the Foxwoods’ box office. Tickets may also be purchased through any Ticketmaster outlet or online at Ticketmaster.com. Doors open at 6:00pm, with the first bout scheduled for 6:30pm.

Fight Network Presents Galahad vs. Dos Santos LIVE Boxing this Saturday, Sept. 20, at 5 p.m. ET

Toronto – Fight Network, the world’s premier 24/7 television channel dedicated to complete coverage of combat sports, presents a live broadcast of Saturday’s vacant IBF Youth super bantamweight championship clash between hometown hero Kid Galahad and former WBC Youth champion Adeilson dos Santos live from Ponds Forge, Sheffield, U.K., this Saturday, Sept. 20 at 5 p.m. ET.

Presented by Hennessy Sports, Saturday’s co-feature pits Adam Etches against Samir Santos Barbosa for the IBF International middleweight title.

Galahad, who currently holds the European and Commonwealth super bantamweight titles, is hoping a win over dos Santos will also be a springboard for him to enter the IBF rankings and get him closer to a shot at the world title he craves.

Galahad said: “I’m gutted that Tyson Cave has pulled out with a back injury, personally I don’t think he fancied it and didn’t want to face me. He knew I would be too good and too strong for him.”

“I haven’t seen too much of dos Santos to be honest but he is unbeaten, world ranked in the WBO and was highly ranked in the WBC ratings until they removed him when he fought for the WBO Latino title.

“But that doesn’t worry me, I will be bringing my A game and whoever steps in the ring with me on the 20th will be getting knocked out.”

Dos Santos said: “I am very well trained for this match, I know that my opponent is very good but I want to come out of this “battle” as a winner and bring a great win back to Brazil.”

Promoter Mick Hennessy said: “I have watched footage of Dos Santos , he is young, unbeaten, fresh, big at the weight and dangerous and I consider this to be a harder fight than the Cave fight.”

Fight Network’s live broadcast will air on Cablevision’s Optimum TV and Texas’ Grande Communications in the U.S., nationwide in Canada and internationally in over 30 countries across Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

Special Afternoon Edition of Fight Night Returns to NBC With Two NABF Title Fights Saturday, September 20 at 3 p.m. ET

Mashantucket, CT: NBC Sports Group’s Fight Night presents its first afternoon broadcast of the year on NBC this Saturday, September 20th, at 3 p.m. ET. The fourth afternoon network boxing broadcast since the Fight Night series premiered in 2012, the show will feature a pair of spectacular bouts with four of the sport’s hottest prospects.

In the main event, South African heavy-hitter Thabiso “The Rock” Mchunu (16-1, 11 KOs) will battle unorthodox Garrett “The Ultimate Warrior” Wilson (13-7-1, 7 KOs) for the NABF Cruiserweight Title and, in the co-feature, undefeated Karl “Dynamite” Dargan (16-0, 8 KOs) will take on Angino “The Nightmare” Perez (16-5, 14 KOs) for the Junior NABF Lightweight Title.

NBC Sports Group’s Fight Night broadcast team of play-by-play announcer Kenny Rice, analyst B.J. Flores and ringside reporter Chris Mannix will call the action.
After scoring an upset over former heavyweight contender “Fast” Eddie Chambers in his Fight Night debut, Mchunu won by decision to capture the NABF Cruiserweight Title against highly-ranked Olanrewaju Durodola in his second Fight Night appearance. Mchunu is anxious to make the first defense of his title on NBC.

“Obviously, for any elite athlete it’s a huge privilege and honor to fight, and especially head up a fight card,” Mchunu said. “It’s really a dream come true. But such privileges come with the responsibility for myself as an athlete and fighter to deliver my best possible performance to all viewers and fight fans. I’ve done everything in my power to be ready to execute a masterful performance on the 20th of September.”

Mchunu’s powerful southpaw style will make for an explosive match against the unorthodox style of Garrett “The Ultimate Warrior” Wilson, who earned many fans in his crowd-pleasing Fight Night debut as a last-minute replacement for Tomasz Adamek against Vyacheslav “Czar” Glazkov nearly a year ago during the last afternoon edition of Fight Night on NBC. Excited to be back, the 32-year old Wilson said, “I love having a chance to perform in front of a national audience. This is a great opportunity to show my skills and my strength and give the fans a skillful and entertaining show.”

Kicking off the broadcast will be Fight Night veteran Karl “Dynamite” Dargan against Angino “The Nightmare” Perez in a ten-round battle for the Junior NABF Lightweight Title.

The undefeated Dargan, 29, made his Fight Night debut last November with a 10-round unanimous decision victory over Michael Brooks to capture the USBA Atlantic Coast Region Lightweight Title. After a thrilling knockout win on NBCSN in June, “Dynamite” looks to add a second regional belt to his collection on Saturday. Trained by his uncle, Naazim Richardson, the legendary trainer of Bernard Hopkins, Shane Mosely and Fight Night favorite Steve “USS” Cunningham, Dargan is a hot lightweight prospect on the rise. “I won my last belt on an NBC broadcast and I appreciate the exposure I get fighting on NBC,” Dargan said.

In order to achieve his goal, Dargan will face a formidable opponent in Angino “The Nightmare” Perez. A 31-year old native of Miami, FL Perez has a stellar 88% knockout-to-win ratio. Focused on scoring a major upset on a major platform, when asked about making his Fight Night debut Perez simply said, “This is the first appearance of many to come!”

“We are excited to present this card with two title bouts on a special afternoon edition of Fight Night on NBC,” said Gary Quinn, Vice President of Programming & Planning for NBC Sports Group.

Kathy Duva, CEO of Main Events, said, “These special afternoon editions of Fight Night on NBC are so important. It’s a chance for the fighters to make an impact on a huge audience that is not completely familiar with boxing. Both of these bouts will be very entertaining in the ring and that’s exactly what we need to keep turning casual viewers into big fans.”

PRESS RELEASE: Travis Scott Headlines WFC 30, Professional Boxing in Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA — September 18, 2014 — World Fighting Championships returns to the Belle of Baton Rouge for another explosive night of professional boxing, featuring the best local talent that The Capital City has to offer. WFC 30 raises the stakes on October 17th, when Travis Scott (17-0, 4KO) will fight for the WFC Middleweight Championship Title.

Scott, a former US Marine, is best described as a “pure boxer.” “I don’t go for the knock-out,” said Scott of his fighting style. “I possess a gift. That gift is to beat my opponent mentally. I use his strength against him. When he burns out, that’s when I go to work.” Scott will go to work in an eight round bout on October 17th in pursuit of the WFC Middleweight title. “It’s always good to have an opportunity to add another title to my professional resume. Anytime there’s something new to gain, something meaningful, I guess I gotta work hard to get it,” said Scott.

In the six-round, co-main event bout, Baton Rouge’s Justin Thomas (9-0, 5KO) faces the tough Daniel Henry (2-1-3, 0KO) of Austin, Texas. Thomas is coming off a unanimous decision win over super middleweight Martin Verdin (20-18-2, 11KO) at WFC 26 in August. Thomas described Verdin as his toughest opponent to date. “I was going for the stoppage, but Verdin is a veteran. He knew what to do to survive the round,” said Thomas of the contest. Thomas is excited to once again be able to showcase his talents in his hometown. “It’s the best feeling in the world to fight in front of my hometown fans. Getting to show the results of all my hard work and everything I put into boxing in front of the people who saw me come up is just the best feeling,” said Thomas.

Also featured on the card, local sensation Chris Singleton (12-1, 5KO) will face the experienced Steve Trumble (13-31, 8KO). Singleton will be fighting in his hometown for the first time in over two years. “It means everything to me to fight at home,” said Singleton. “I have sparred with Trumble before. He’s a strong, tough veteran, and it’s going to be a competitive fight. I’m ready to put on a great show for everyone.”

Rounding out the card, Arthur Thomas (1-0, 1KO) will face Todd Manuel (8-4-1, 1KO), and Larry Stampley (Debut) will face Jay Orta (7-17-2, 4KO).

Up-and-coming promoter, and President of WFC, Matt McGovern, is excited about the direction that boxing is taking in the South. Said the young promoter, “Our last seven events in Baton Rouge have sold out, and been packed with enthusiastic boxing fans. I think the South is a great place for boxing, and we’re lucky to be working with talented fighters and a great venue here in Baton Rouge.”

The official WFC 30 weigh-in will take place on Thursday, October 16th at the Belle of Baton Rouge Atrium at 5:30 CST. The weigh-in is open to the public.

Tickets are priced at $60 for VIP, and $30 for general admission, and are available via the WFC website at www.worldfightingchampionships.com. Fans are encouraged to buy tickets early, as the last seven events at the Belle have sold out.

Doors to the Atrium at the Belle of Baton Rouge open at 7:00 p.m. on fight night. First bell is at 8:00 p.m.

JOSEPH “JO JO” DIAZ VS. RAUL “BULE” HIDALGO TO REPLACE ANTONIO TARVER VS. JOHNATHON BANKS AS MAIN EVENT IN MONDAY, SEPT. 29 GOLDEN BOY LIVE! EVENT DUE TO TARVER INJURY

Hidalgo, Texas (Sept. 18) – The recently announced junior featherweight bout between Southern California favorite Joseph “Jo Jo” Diaz and Mexican warrior Raul “Bule” Hidalgo has been elevated from the co-main event to the main event for the Monday, Sept. 29 Golden Boy Live! fight night from the State Farm Arena in Hidalgo, Texas due to an injury suffered by former light heavyweight world champion Antonio Tarver.

Tarver, who was scheduled to face Johnathon Banks in a 10-round heavyweight bout on FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes, injured his thumb during training camp. “The injury actually happened two and a half weeks ago and I’ve been trying my hardest to work through it. Finally my doctor ordered an X-ray and we found out it was a fracture,” Tarver said of his injury.

Tarver added, “I’m very disappointed I won’t get to face Johnathon Banks, but hopefully we will be able to reschedule this fight with him for a later date. I was ready to make a statement with this fight, and I’ll be back as soon as I can.” Tarver still plans to be in Texas, however, to witness his son Antonio Jr.’s professional debut.

The remainder of the televised portion of the card will feature a co-main event between New Mexican junior welterweight Fidel “The Atrisco Kid” Maldonado Jr. (18-2, 15 KOs) and an opponent to be determined, as well as junior welterweight Ricardo “Dinamita” Alvarez (23-3, 13 KOs) in the televised opener against an opponent to be determined.

“The show must go on,” said Oscar De La Hoya, founder and president of Golden Boy Promotions. “The loss of the Tarver vs. Banks fight is a disappointment, but fans in the State Farm Arena and those watching at home on FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes will not be disappointed.”

A fighter whose maturity in the ring far surpasses his 21 years of age, South El Monte, California’s Joseph Diaz Jr. (11-0, 7 KOs) is enjoying a meteoric rise through the junior featherweight division. Already a 2014 winner over Jiovany Fuentes and Luis Maldonado, Diaz Jr. was impressive in his first 10-round bout in July, as he outpointed prospect Ramiro Robles.

Fight Club OC Show Has Title MMA Bout and HW Alex Flores Return

Only 24 years of age Flores and his manager Michael Love made a smart decision following his April loss to undefeated Charles Martin in a NABO title and decided to turn things around and secured the services of one of So Cal’s top boxing trainers in Riverside’s Henry Ramirez. Ramirez is the trainer of Chris Arreola and Josesito Lopez and he took both of them to world title bouts. In just over two months of working with Flores the reports from sparring sessions in Las Vegas are that the big 6’5″ heavyweight has never looked better.

Flores will be matched with Lancaster’s Avery Gibson who just upset 6-0 Danny Kelly in August on an ESPN show at Pechanga and is ready for this challenge. Gibson at 4-4 has never been down, so we have a very interesting heavyweight matchup, one not to miss!

Also featured on the boxing side of the Fight Club OC hybrid card will the USA debut of Scotland’s amateur welterweight champion Jamie Robinson who is 2-0 as a pro as he faces Taif Harris out of Lancaster, and the OC debut of 4-0 Rafael Espinoza who with three KOs in his four wins is being looked at by top manager Frank Espinoza. Rafael Espinoza faces Hemets Fernando Fuentes who stands at 4-3. Other Boxing bouts to be named shortly.

And the action will just get hotter as Fight Club OC MMA Middleweight Champion “Curtious” Curtis Millender will put his belt on the line facing Las Vegas Bad Boy James “The Coolest Kid You Know” Chaney. Millender is undefeated at 6-0 and a solid 8-5 record by Chaney means this will be a war with the winner definitely in the sites of the UFC or Bellator!

Brook inspiration leaves Galahad hungry for world titles

London (18 Sept) European and Commonwealth super-bantamweight champion Kid Galahad admits that seeing close friend and stable-mate Kell Brook win the IBF world welterweight title last month in America has made him even more motivated to bring a world title of his own back to the Wincobank gym in Sheffield.

This Saturday night (September 20) at the Ponds Forge Arena, Galahad faces unbeaten Brazilian puncher Adeilson Dos Santos for the vacant IBF Youth super-bantamweight title. But next year he hopes to replicate Brook’s success and strike gold.

“I was there with Kell and it was an unbelievable experience,” said Galahad, 17-0 (9 KOs). “It was great seeing a good friend win a world title – something he’d always dreamed about since he was a little kid. And to do it in that kind of fashion made it even more special. Nobody outside his inner circle thought he could do it. He proved them all wrong. He did a proper job on Shawn Porter.

“Just being there and being around the whole scene motivated me even more and made me want to hurry up and become a world champion. It really did give me some extra motivation to succeed and bring another world title to the Wincobank.

“You’ve got to get the opportunities and you’ve got to keep winning, but I’d love to one day do what Kell has done and fight for a world title in America. If that’s where the big fights are, I’m ready for them.”

That’s not to say Galahad is overlooking this Saturday’s opponent, however. Quite the opposite, in fact. The Sheffield stylist has studied Dos Santos, 14-0 (10 KOs), and knows exactly what kind of problems he will pose if he’s not on his A-game.

“It will be a technical fight,” said the 24-year-old. “I’ve seen a fight or two of his and he seems technically quite good. He looks like someone who has a good amateur pedigree and knows what he’s doing in there. He’s sharp, he’s tall, he’s rangy and he looks like he can punch a bit.

“I’m fully expecting a tough fight. He will probably turn out to be the best opponent I’ve faced so far in my career, so I have to be ready and on my game. I will do whatever I’ve got to do to be victorious.”

In addition to his savvy skills and clever boxing brain, Galahad is hoping the support of his home crowd will also motivate him to put on a career-best performance come Saturday night.

“You can’t go wrong when you’re fighting in your hometown in front of your people,” he said. “That alone lifts me to another level. Everybody comes out and shows their support and I really thrive on it. I love it.”

*** Kid Galahad collides with power-punching Brazilian Adeilson Dos Santos in a battle of unbeaten super-bantamweights this Saturday night (September 20) in Sheffield, live on Channel 5 in the UK and on SporTV in Brazil and on FightNetwork in Canada and is sponsored by MaxiNutrition.***

The exciting undercard will also see another IBF title up for grabs when Adam Etches fights Samir Santos Barbosa for the IBF International Middleweight title.

Popular Sheffield fighter Scott Jenkins will also be in action along with local fighters Atif Shafiq, Sam O’Maison, Callum Hancock, Jordan Gill of Chatteris and Tyson Fury’s brother Young Fury.

The packed crowd will also see highly regarded featherweight prospect Yusuf Safa from Bexleyheath in action.

Limited tickets for the Hennessy Sports promoted event at Ponds Forge, Sheffield, priced at £35 general admission and £100 ringside are still available to purchase by calling the SIV ticket box office on
0114 223 3777.

Tickets are also available from www.sivtickets.com or in person at the Sheffield City Hall, Crucible Theatre and Motorpoint Arena Sheffield.

CHASING YOUR DREAMS IN LAS VEGAS

Floyd Mayweather claimed his 47th win against Marcos Maidana at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Saturday night.
“Mayhem” was a massive event just like all Floyd Mayweather’s fights have become. It’s not just a fight but an event, and a global event at that.

Stars from the world of sports, film, music and fashion fly into Las Vegas just to watch Floyd fight.
Fight week started with fighter arrivals on Tuesday, Floyd had his final press conference on Wednesday. Thursday was the undercard press conference, with fan workouts and autograph signing, and a screening at Bleacher’s madhouse for the fans in the evening. Friday was the weigh in, where Rick Ross took the stage to entertain the 10,000 strong crowd before Floyd and Marcos Maidana took centre stage.
new ashley two I was seated next to Badou Jack and Ishe Smith, just behind Danny Garcia and Adrien Broner. I was surrounded by world champions and boxing legends. Danny Jacobs, Peter Quillen, Evander Holyfield and Paul Williams, who is now disabled after a motorcycle crash, and boxing legends Erik Morales and Sergio Martinez.
Who would have thought that I’d be rubbing shoulders with these guys who now know me by name, and show me respect. That makes me so proud. “Work so hard that your idols become your rivals” comes to mind.

Rival, the Canadian based boxing equipment provider, had a shop opening in Las Vegas. I headed down there with Badou and former world champion, Lou DeValle. Sugar Ray Leonard, Lennox Lewis, Hasim Rahman, Roy Jones, Jean Pascal, Eddie Mustafa Muhammad all turned up for the opening. Great company once again.
new ashley three
On Saturday morning I went to the Boxing Fan Expo to sign autographs and take photos with the fans. The event was jam packed with boxing legends and champions; Sugar Ray Leonard, Mike Tyson, Evander Holifield, Roy Jones Junior, to name but a few of them.
At 4:30pm I was at ringside to do a live interview with Steve Illis for BoxNation who are televising the Mayhem card in the UK. I was asked for my views and predictions for the fight – I believed Floyd could get a knockout win. I was also asked what it was like to be signed up by Floyd Mayweather.
I’m a kid from a neglected part of London where crime is sky high, unemployment numbers keep rising and the aspirations of the tenants are gutter high. I’m not supposed to be in Las Vegas. I’m not supposed to be with Floyd Mayweather. My life, my journey has hopefully inspired kids from similar backgrounds to myself to chase their own dreams. Some people criticise me for achieving this. Some people are just never happy regardless of what you achieve.
Successful and important people from sports, media, music, fashion, business and politics have commended me on my journey to date, and that is pleasing. It’s easy to be just a statistic from where I’m from but I have the huge pleasure and privilege of having an employer by the name of Floyd Mayweather.
ashley blog2 111
Mike Tyson inspired me to become a boxer, watching him on TV as a five year old. Roy Jones Junior astonished me with his ‘special effects’ talents as a teenager. Floyd Mayweather showed me that with hard work and dedication anything is possible. Floyd’s motto has gotten me to be where I am in life.
I’m not a champion yet, but no one ever believed I would even be a contender. I appreciate every day that I spend in Las Vegas under the guidance of Floyd. I won’t hear a bad word said about him. This is a man who gets nothing from seeing me do well. He’s told me if I need anything just ask. He gave me my highest grossing fight purse and put me on the biggest PPV boxing show ever. I see day in day out during camp the lives he touches and the people in need he helps. Everyone I know who knows him values him as a person, it’s people who don’t know him that make ill-judged comments regarding him.
You can’t please everyone but everyone who knows him, appreciates him.
Floyd mentioned both Manny Paciquao and Amir Khan in his post fight press conference. Maybe one of them will fight him next May or September.
Mayweather promotions got its second world champion on Floyd’s “Mayhem” card. Mickey Bey beat the number one lightweight champion. Miguel Vasquez held the title for five years and had only lost to Saul Alvarez and Timothy Bradley. That was a great win and I’m proud of Mickey.
I finished fight week with Floyd at his mothers’ house. Celebrities, family and friends attended. Great atmosphere with good people.
Another Floyd Mayweather training camp is over. In 12 months’ time he’ll be having his last fight. He will be missed when he’s gone. There’s never been an athlete to do the numbers or make the amount of money he has.
They criticise you when you’re active but they will miss you when you are gone.
Long Live Floyd Mayweather!

JAVIER PRIETO AND IVAN CANO MEET AGAIN ON SEPT. 27

LOS ANGELES (Sept. 17) – After battling it out for 12 rounds that were too close to call on May 17, Mexican lightweight stars Javier “Implecable” Prieto and Ivan “Macanon” Cano will meet once again for the WBC Silver Lightweight Title on Saturday, Sept. 27, and this time, the fighters competing at the Hotel Gran Riviera Princess in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, promise there will be no draw verdict rendered.

In the Televisa and FOX Deportes co-main event, female boxing superstar Zulina “La Loba” Munoz looks to spoil the unbeaten record of Karina “Kary” Hernandez when they meet in a 10-round non-title junior bantamweight bout.

Michoacan’s Javier Prieto (24-7, 18 KOs) had been close to making his move on the elite in past years but he just couldn’t win the big one. That all changed for the eight-year veteran in 2012, when he began compiling victory after victory, culminating in a 12-round decision win over Vicente Mosquera last November, earning him the WBC Silver Lightweight Title. The win was his eighth straight, and though the 27-year-old drew with Cano in May, he can resume his world title run with a victory on Sept. 27.

The brother of respected contender Pablo Cesar Cano, Mexico City’s Ivan Cano (16-6-1, 12 KOs) is on the verge of moving into the world championship picture should he defeat Prieto in their Sept. rematch. Shaking off a rough two-fight patch in 2013 that saw him lose to Dierry Jean and Daniel Ruiz, Cano bounced back with a knockout of Salvador Carreon last November and followed it up with his spirited draw against Prieto. Now it’s time for Cano to show the world just how good he can be.

The WBC Female Junior Bantamweight Champion since 2012, Zulina Munoz (42-1-2, 27 KOs) has since defended her title six times, avenging her lone loss to Alesia Graf in the process. On Sept. 27, the 27-year-old native of Mexico City will seek her 43rd professional victory in a non-title bout against Nezahualcoyotl’s Karina Hernandez (5-0-3, 1 KO). A talented fighter who won the NABF Female Flyweight Title in her most recent bout against Aracely Palacios in May, Hernandez is taking a big step up against Munoz, but as the saying goes, the bigger the risk, the bigger the reward.

Prieto vs. Cano II, a 12-round bout for Prieto’s WBC Silver Lightweight Title, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Cancun Boxing de Pepe Gomez in association with Canelo Promotions, and sponsored by Corona Extra. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. CT and the first fight begins at 6:30 p.m. CT. The Televisa broadcast will air on Channel 5 and begins at 10:30 p.m. CT (Delayed broadcast) and the FOX Deportes broadcast will air at 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT (Live broadcast).

Injury to Hernandez-Harrison Causes Postponement of September 27 “Hometown Takeover” Championship Boxing Event

Washington, D.C. (September 17, 2014) – All In Entertainment, Promoter for undefeated welterweight prospect, Dusty Hernandez-Harrison, announced that the September 27 Hometown Takeover Championship Boxing Event scheduled to take place at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. will be postponed following an ankle injury sustained by Hernandez-Harrison.

Jeff Fried of All In Entertainment expressed that the “top priority is always Dusty’s health and well-being. We will know more this week after we receive further medical guidance and see how Dusty is feeling after his first couple of days of training, including sparring.”

Hernandez-Harrison’s main event bout with Hector Munoz was to be for the WBC Continental Americas Championship. Other fighters on the card represented the best of the Washington, D.C. region, including undefeated welterweight Larry Recio, Baltimore’s cruiserweight contender, Venroy July, rising heavyweight, Dwayne McRae and lightweight undefeated sensation, Mykal Fox, among many other exciting boxers from the DMV.

“I am really excited about fighting in front of my hometown fans in D.C. The ankle is healing well and I look forward to getting back in the ring.” said Hernandez-Harrison.

“It is not so much the ankle injury as it is getting the work in before a championship fight against a guy like Munoz that will keep coming at Dusty for every second of every round,” said Hernandez-Harrison’s trainer and father, Buddy Harrison.

“Nothing will be done to compromise Dusty’s health. Once we receive medical clearance and Buddy is comfortable with the pre-fight preparation schedule, we can focus on Dusty’s next bout,” added Fried.

JOSEPH “JO JO” DIAZ RETURNS IN CO-MAIN EVENT OF GOLDEN BOY LIVE! ON SEPT. 29 AGAINST RAUL HIDALGO AT THE STATE FARM ARENA IN HIDALGO, TEXAS

LOS ANGELES (Sept. 17) – One of the most exciting rising stars in boxing today, 2012 U.S. Olympian Joseph “Jo Jo” Diaz Jr., will return to the ring on Monday, Sept. 29, to face Mexico’s Raul “Bule” Hidalgo (21-11, 16 KOs) in a 10-round co-main event featherweight bout on FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes’ Golden Boy Live! at the State Farm Arena in Hidalgo, Texas.

A fighter whose maturity in the ring far surpasses his 21 years of age, South El Monte, California’s Joseph Diaz Jr. (11-0, 7 KOs) is enjoying a meteoric rise through the featherweight division. Already a 2014 winner over Jiovany Fuentes and Luis Maldonado, Diaz Jr. was impressive in his first 10-round bout in July, as he outpointed prospect Ramiro Robles.

One of Diaz’ most seasoned opponents yet, Chihuahua Mexico’s Raul Hidalgo (22-11, 16 KOs) has fit a lot of experience into his four years as a professional, and he intends to use every bit of it to score the upset on Sept. 29. A ferocious competitor who has faced off with the likes of Ivan Morales, AJ Banal, Daiki Kameda and Christopher Martin, the 25-year-old Hidalgo has won three of his last four bouts, most recently outpointing Gonzalo Garcia over 12 rounds in July.

In the 10-round heavyweight main event, former light heavyweight world champion Antonio “Magic Man” Tarver meets top contender Johnathon Banks in a matchup of veterans looking to make their case for a shot at a world title.

Also in action in a non-televised bout will be unbeaten San Antonio prospect Joseph “Texas Mongoose” Rodriguez. He’ll be taking on Corpus Christi’s Jeremy Longoria in an All-Texas showdown scheduled for six rounds in the junior featherweight division.

One of Texas’ most popular young fighters, 22-year-old Joseph Rodriguez (6-0, 2 KOs) is a prospect many believe has world championship potential. A professional since 2012, Rodriguez hasn’t disappointed, barely losing a round en route to a perfect 6-0 record. The San Antonio native, who is co-promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and Leija*Battah Promotions, will make his debut in Hidalgo against Corpus Christi’s Jeremy Longoria (6-4, 1 KO), a tough battler who has rebounded from a 3-3 start of his career to win three of his last four bouts, including a decision victory over Alberto Navarro in August.

Tarver vs. Banks, a 10-round heavyweight bout is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Leija*Battah Promotions in association with K2 Promotions and is sponsored by Corona Extra and O’Reilly AutoParts. The FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes broadcast airs live at 10:00 p.m. ET/9:00 p.m. CT/7:00 p.m. PT.

Individual tickets priced at $24, $30 and $50 as well as group table packages priced at $1,094, $886 and $664, plus applicable fees and service charges, are on sale now and can be purchased by calling Leija*Battah Promotions at (210) 979-3302, the State Farm Arena at (956) 684-5115, Ticketmaster at (866) 448-7849 or online at www.ticketmaster.com.

43-year-old Grady Brewer is from a family of boxers and a native of Lawton, Oklahoma. The former IBA and IBC Light Middleweight titleholder was the 2006 winner of the ESPN reality show, The Contender.

Outside the ring, Brewer works at the Goodyear plant in Lawton to support his wife and four children. He began his amateur boxing career at age 11, and won 40 of his 45 fights, as well as the Oklahoma Golden Gloves tournament.

As a professional, Brewer has made a career of taking on top-level opposition on short notice and spoiling their plans. In 2008, Brewer defeated future world champion Cornelius Bundrage by split-decision in a 12 round IBO title eliminator. He then captured the IBO title in 2009 by knocking out Albert Onolunose in the second round. He also holds a knockout victory over previously unbeaten prospect Fernando Guerrero, among many others.

35-year-old Said Ouali was born in the Moroccan city of Agadir, but moved to Maaseik, Belgium when he was only a few months old. With no real boxing circuit available in Belgium, Ouali, then 20-years old, moved to Newark, New Jersey, where he went 80-3 as an amateur boxer.

A southpaw, Ouali has spent most of his career fighting for Mayweather Productions, Floyd Mayweather’s promotional company and is now living in Las Vegas. Ouali’s most prestigious victory came against Argentina’s Hector Saldivia, who saw his 33-0 flawless win streak brought to an abrupt end. He won the IBO USBO Welterweight Title in 2006 with a sixth-round stoppage win over Paul Delgado.

Also scheduled for “Rumble on the River” action are:

Hometown rising star Juan Alejandro “Alex” Saucedo (14-0, 10 KOs) from Oklahoma City in an eight-round middleweight battle vs. San Marcos, Texas’ Mike Tutt (10-3-1, 4 KOs). Promoted by Top Rank and currently the hottest prospect to come out of OKC, undefeated Saucedo has served as a sparring partner for the great Manny Pacquiao.

Formerly #3 world-ranked contender Carson Jones (35-10-3, 25 KOs) will face rugged Liberal, Kansas, via Mexico’s Joel Vargas, a 20-fight veteran, in a welterweight six-rounder. Jones is a former USBA Welterweight, NABA Light Middleweight, WBC Continental Americas Light Middleweight and NABA USA Light Middleweight Champion.

In other action, Monterrey, Mexico’s Rolando Garza (4-0, 2 KOs) will take on Midwest City, Oklahoma’s Joe Strong (3-2, 1 KO) in a four-round junior middleweight battle; Oklahoma City’s Martin Morales (2-1, 1 KO) will face 34-fight veteran Jeremiah Torres of Belen, New Mexico, in an eight-round welterweight bout; and to start the action, Douro, Ontario, Canada’s undefeated Cody Crowley (2-0, 2 KOs) will take an early-career step up in class, as he faces 35-fight veteran Larry Smith of Dallas in a six-round junior middleweight bout.

On fight night, doors open at 7 pm and the action starts at 8 pm. OKC Air Park is located at 1701 S. Western Avenue in Oklahoma City. All bouts subject to change.

Return of the Saint: Rebrasse media workout – quotes

Christopher Rebrasse (22-2-3, 6 KOs) has arrived in London ready to defend his European Super Middleweight crown in a WBC World title final eliminator against George Groves (19-2, 15 KOs).

Today at a media workout at Stonebridge Boxing Club the Frenchman shared his thoughts ahead of Saturday night’s fight at the SSE Arena, Wembley.

Said Rebrasse: ‘’I’m very happy to be here and I’m looking forward to Saturday night. Groves is a good boxer but I am ready to do whatever it takes to get the win. I cannot say whether I will beat Groves inside the distance or after the final bell but I am confident I will win. I’ve come to London as the champion and I will be leaving as the champion.’’

Rebrasse has travelled with coach Laurent Boucher. As fight night approaches Boucher believes his fighter is primed to cause an upset in Wembley. ‘’Christopher is in great shape. We’ve trained hard and we’ve trained smart. He may be the underdog but that is when he is at his most dangerous. He will make a big statement on Saturday night by beating Groves on his home turf.’’

Return of the Saint: Groves vs. Rebrasse is available to watch live on Sky Sports. Tickets are available via ssearena.co.uk and axs.com or by calling 08448 24 48 24.

Barrera-Watkins Match-up Highlights Undercard Sept. 20 at Foxwoods

Mashantucket, CT:Before NBC Fight Night broadcasts live from Foxwoods Resort Casino on Saturday afternoon, the live audience will be treated to a tour de force undercard that features five undefeated fighters, five local fighters, one Cuban fighter, one rematch and one professional debut in 30 rounds of non-stop action. The special afternoon edition of Fight Night features two regional championship bouts. In the co-feature, undefeated lightweight Karl “Dynamite” Dargan (16-0, 8 KOs) of Philadelphia, PA will take on Angino “The Nightmare” Perez (16-5, 14 KOs) for the Junior NABF Lightweight Title and Thabiso “The Rock” Mchunu (16-1, 11 KOs) looks to defend his NABF Cruiserweight title in the main event against Garrett “The Ultimate Warrior” Wilson (13-7-1, 7 KOs).

Undefeated Cuban light heavyweight sensation Sullivan Barrera (12-0, 7 KOs) will face New York native Eric Watkins (10-7-1, 5 KOs) for eight rounds of action. This will be Barrera’s third fight in 2014. The 32-year old defeated Lee Campbell, who was undefeated at the time, in a six round unanimous decision at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs in his last fight. Earlier this year, he knocked out Larry Pryor at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia. The fight is scheduled for eight rounds, which would be the longest of Barrera’s career (his last four fights have all gone six rounds). Watkins, 28, is looking to snap a three-fight losing streak. The West Virginia native lost a split decision to Bobby Thomas, Jr. (92-97, 92-97, 95-94) in his last fight. This will be the first fight in Connecticut for both fighters.

Sosa & Perez

The first of two Connecticut against Massachusetts match-ups is the rematch between Chip Perez (10-3-1, 3 KOs) of East Hartford, CT and Agustine Mauras (6-0-2, 3 KO’s) of Lawrence, MA in a six round lightweight battle. The two met earlier this year on Mauras’ turf where the six-round fight ended in a draw (all three judges scored the bout 57-57). Now the two will meet again, this time on Perez’s stomping ground for another six rounds. Perez’s previous two fights before the draw were also on Fight Night undercards, losing to Jason Sosa and Michael Brooks at Mohegan Sun. Mauras, 23, is undefeated and four years younger than Perez, 27, so a win in hostile territory could bring a big ego boast to the up-and-comer.

In the other Connecticut vs. Massachusetts match-up, middleweights Anthony Everett (0-1) of Dorchester, MA and David Wilson (3-0) of New Haven, CT square off for four rounds. Everett was stopped earlier this year in his professional debut against Andy Gonzales in the second round. The southpaw, Wilson, has three four-round unanimous decision victories since making his professional debut last year. Most recently, he defeated Devison Riberio by wide decision in May of this year.

Another local fighter, Charles Foster (5-0, 22 KOs) of New Haven, CT, will face Robert Jackson (0-1) of Hampton, VA in a four-round super middleweight match-up. Foster, 24, has not fought since October of last year when he defeated Greg Hackett in a four-round unanimous decision. Jackson has not fought since 2012 when he made his professional debut against Tylon Burris and was stopped in the second round.

In a battle of the Hudson, Queens, NY native Tyrell White (0-1) will take on Piotr Apostol of Atlantic City, NJ in his professional debut for four rounds of lightweight action. White made his professional debut earlier this month with a four-round unanimous decision loss to Usiel Hernandez.

Main Events CEO Kathy Duva said, “This undercard has everything I could ask for: prospects, undefeated fighters, local fighters and a rematch of a great action fight. The fans in attendance are in for a real treat. And, given the early start time, everyone will have time to enjoy the show then spend a fantastic night at Foxwoods!”

‘EL MATADOR’ AIMING TO DO A NUMBER ON STUART HALL

Monaco/Johannesburg, September 17 – Unbeaten bantamweight Randy “El Matador” Caballero steps out of the shadows next month when he fights former champion Stuart Hall for the IBF championship on the Golden Gloves “Title Tornado” tournament in Monte Carlo on October 25.

Just 23, the American (21-0, 13 KOs) has already stepped into dangerous territory, having stunned Kohei Oba in an official IBF eliminator in Japan in April. This time it is all on the line as he seeks to deliver on the rich promise he showed as an amateur when he won numerous US national championship titles and captured bronze at the world championships.
“It’s a dream come true,” said the Golden Boy fighter from his home in Coachella Valley, California. “I’ve seen Hall fight, he’s been a world champion, but his time is done. It’s time for me to come up. I’m a young fighter and I’m ready to put on a show in Monte Carlo.”
Caballero said he had no problem travelling to Japan for his eliminator – “I was prepared to do what it takes” – and he was equally ready to go to Hall’s UK hometown, until the bout was switched to Europe.
He agrees that Hall (16-3-2, 7 KOs) comes to fight, as fans saw in his outstanding title scrap with Paul Butler in June. “Style-wise, it’s gonna be a great fight. I’m more hungry and I’m gonna be strong. He’s never faced someone like me; I’m gonna take it to him.”
Fans unfamiliar with Caballero can expect to see a boxer who can box or brawl, whatever the situation demands. “I break fighters down,” he says confidently.
Caballero, who is trained by his father Marcos, an ex-fighter, has boxed since the age of eight. He reckons he had over 150 amateur fights, with “no more than 10 or 11 losses”.
His transition into the professional ranks was explosive – his first opponent was blown out in 45 seconds – and he has since beaten contenders like Luis Maldonado and Manuel Roman on his way to the #1 ranking in both the IBF and WBO.
He has been in training camps with former champions Abner Mares and Nonito Donaire, both of whom gave him props for the quality of his work.
Although he is American by birth, Caballero has a deep affinity for Nicaragua, the land of his father’s birth. While a number of champions have emerged from the Central American country, chiefly Alexis Arguello, Caballero is aiming to be the first American-Nicaraguan world champion.
“Fighting for Nicaragua is very important to me,” he says, duly carrying the nation’s blue and white flag into the ring for his fights. “I’m very excited . . . they have always supported me.”
He loves engaging with fans, urging they follow him on Instagram and Twitter (@RandyELMatador).
Growing up, his heroes were Floyd Mayweather jnr and Oscar De La Hoya. “Floyd is a great fighter. People might not like him outside the ring, but he’s a very successful man. Every punch he lets go is effective. And Oscar I just admire for his class both in an out of the ring.”
Meanwhile, chief second Jesse Garcia is predicting an explosive performance from the top-ranked contender.
“Oh gosh, he looks so good in training. We’re more than a month out, but he’s so strong and on point. People are gonna see a young, talented fighter who produces fireworks. Randy is very talented. He can adapt and box inside or out. He likes to fight, likes to box, and can be the aggressor.”
The camp has no concerns about travelling to Europe, where Hall will enjoy some support, claiming that rings are alike all around the world.
“When he went to Japan it was absolutely vital that the critics and fans saw that he was the real deal. It was a big step up. He did beautifully.”
Garcia predicts a sharp upward trajectory in Caballero’s progress as a fighter.
“At 23 he is already very skilled. With him, the sky is the limit. As time moves along his skills and power will become sharper. He’ll get even better. The world is just opening up for him.”
Said promoter Rodney Berman: “I’m excited about this fight. It could top a fight card anywhere. As we saw in his last fight, Hall is a warrior. Caballero won’t have it easy. It has the makings of a terrific contest.”
The “Title Tornado” card also includes WBA/IBO strawweight champion Hekkie Budler’s title defence against Xiong Zhao Zhong of China, the WBC Silver middleweight title fight between Martin Murray and Domenico Spada and the WBC Silver light-heavyweight title bout between unbeaten prospects Ryno Liebenberg of South Africa and Eleider Alvarez of Colombia.
