Ruslan Chagaev back in training

ruslan_chagaev
On July 6th, Ruslan Chagaev won the WBA world heavyweight championship for the second time by outscoring Fres Oquendo in Grozny (Chechnya). After a long summer vacation with his family, Chagaev returned to the gym this week to prepare for his first title defense.

“I feel great after taking so weeks off and I am looking forward to getting back into the ring”, says Chagaev. Date, place and opponent for his first title defense haven’t been set. “We are starting negotiations now”, states Chagaev’s manager Timur Dugazaev. “Ruslan will probably be back in action end of November in Germany.” Word is that a rematch with Oquendo might be on the horizon after Chagaev won the first fight in July only by split decision.

Both Chagaev and Dugazaev – who is a fight himself besides being the champion’s manager – have picked up training and have joined forces with one of the best and most experienced German coaches. Fritz Sdunek will take over the role as head coach for the WBA world heavyweight champion.

Sdunek had already been in Chagaev’s corner in Grozny but only joined Artur Grigorian as second and cutman. Now the 67-year-old will take the lead after he split up with former middleweight champion Felix Sturm this summer.

“We are very happy to work with Fritz. He is the best trainer in Germany, he knows Ruslan very well and he worked with lots of great fighters and champions”, adds Dugazaev.

Scott Jenkins looks to add his name to the domestic pile-up in 2015

London (17th September) Sheffield super-featherweight Scott Jenkins has barely put a foot wrong in the first three years of his professional boxing career and has thirteen straight victories and seven knockouts to his name as proof. But next year he hopes to kick on and start adding domestic titles to his resume.

“I want to be fighting for domestic titles and getting my name out there in Britain,” he said. “That’s definitely my plan for next year.”

“For now, though, I’m just concentrating on winning and improving. The rest is all down to my team. I’ve got a great team around me and I’m confident they will guide me in the right way.

“Don’t get me wrong, I’m pressuring them and I want to move fast. But it’s all about getting the timing right. I’ve been cruising through six rounders and I know I’m ready to step it up.”

Though a super-featherweight for the time being, Jenkins admits his options are open and that a foray into the stacked domestic lightweight division isn’t out of the question.

“I’m hoping I can stay down at super-featherweight, but I’m maturing and growing and that may mean I’ll fight at lightweight one day,” he said. “We’ll wait and see. All I know is there are some great fights for me at both of those weights. Domestically, the super-featherweight and lightweight divisions are packed full of top fighters and big names. I’d love to get in the mix with them next year.

“When the time is right, I’m ready to face those top names. To be the best, you’ve got to beat the best, and I’m prepared to do just that.”

Last time out in April, Jenkins halted Spain’s David Martin Campillo in the fifth round. It wasn’t just the toughest test of Jenkins’ young career, it was also his best performance so far.

“I knew going into the fight that it was a step-up,” said the 23-year-old. “But I went in and grew in confidence as I went along. I thought I did a good job on him and boxed well.

“The better the opponent, the better I’ll box. The beauty of fighting better opponents is that they don’t tuck up and look to survive. They actually have some ambition and try to fight. That gives you more opportunities to hit them.”

This coming Saturday night (September 20) at the Ponds Forge Arena, Jenkins competes in his fourteenth professional fight against Jan Holec. It will be the fifth time he’s fought at the venue and ‘Hot Shot’ is keen to maintain his win-streak and set up bigger nights in the future.

“By this time next year I hope to have either won the English title or the British title,” he said. “Until then, I want to keep building up the experience and doing the rounds. Give it twelve months and I’ll be ready to win big domestic titles.”

***On Saturday night (September 20) in Sheffield, Kid Galahad collides with dangerous Brazilian Adeilson Dos Santos in a battle of unbeaten super-bantamweights, and Adam Etches faces big-punching Brazilian Samir Santos Barbosa, live on Channel 5 in the UK and on SporTV in Brazil and on FightNetwork in Canada and is sponsored by MaxiNutrition.***

Local fighters Atif Shafiq, Sam O’Maison, Callum Hancock, will also be in action along with Jordan Gill of Chatteris and Tyson Fury’s brother Young Fury.

The packed crowd will also see highly regarded featherweight prospect Yusuf Safa from Bexleyheath in action.

Tickets for the Hennessy Sports promoted event at Ponds Forge, Sheffield, priced at £35 general admission and £100 ringside are available to purchase by calling the SIV ticket box office on 0114 223 3777.

O’Neil-Funch title bout highlights CES MMA XXVI

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Sept. 17th, 2014) — The stars are coming out for “CES MMA XXVI,” including the reigning heavyweight champ, the return of the “Rockstar,” and an intriguing title bout between two former UFC vets.

CES MMA heavyweight champion “Big” John Johnston returns for the first time since winning the belt in March and Chuck O’Neil locks horns with fellow Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) alum Ricardo Funch for the promotion’s vacant welterweight title on Friday, Oct. 14, 2014 at “CES MMA XXVI” from Twin River Casino in Lincoln, R.I.

The card also includes the return of “Rockstar” Luis Felix, who faces tough Philadelphia lightweight Gemiyale Adkins, a winner on CES’ last card in August.

Tickets for “CES MMA XXVI” are on sale now at $40.00, $55.00, $100.00 and $125.00 (VIP) and can be purchased online at www.cesboxing.com or www.twinriver.com or by phone at 401-724-2253/2254. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

After beating UFC vet Josh Hendricks to capture CES’ vacant heavyweight title seven months ago, Johnston (6-0, 6 KOs), a Malden, Mass., native, puts his unbeaten record on the line against Newport News, Va., vet Keith Bell (5-4-1, 3 KOs) in a non-title fight.

All six of Johnston’s wins have come by knockout, including the title bout against Hendricks in which Johnston bloodied the 37-year-old Ohio native with a flurry of punches until referee Dan Miragliotta stopped the fight. The 35-year-old Bell, nicknamed “Bad News,” has won three of fights in the past year and a half and appeared on the undercard of Bellator 109 in November.

For Felix (11-8, 4 KOs), the Providence native who was choked out by The Ultimate Fighter alum Julian Lane in August on national television, “CES MMA XXVI” is a shot at redemption, albeit against a tough opponent who took out one of his teammates that same night (also in a nationally televised bout).

With six losses in his last seven bouts entering August, Adkins (9-8, 3 KOs) pulled off one of the biggest upset wins of his career, defeating the previously unbeaten Nate Andrews by unanimous decision at “CES MMA XXV.” The 5-foot-10 slugger nicknamed “Baby Hercules” will make his fourth CES MMA appearance in October.

The Funch-O’Neil bout could steal the spotlight. A police officer in his hometown of Ludlow, Mass., Funch (8-4, 4 KOs) fought four times for the UFC before the promotion released him in 2012 following a loss to Dan Miller. He hasn’t fought since. Now he faces the scrappy O’Neil (13-6, 4 KOs), a Bridgewater, Mass., vet who appeared on Season 13 of TUF and has won four of his last fights under the guidance of CES MMA, in a five-round bout for the inaugural CES welterweight championship.

“CES MMA XXVI” also features the long-awaited return of fan favorites “The Hulk” Todd Chattelle, who hasn’t fought since breaking his hand in a loss to Shedrick Goodridge in January, and “The Asian Sensation” Andre Soukhamthath, also looking to avenge a loss to Kin Moy that same night.

Both Chattelle (12-10, 9 KOs) and Soukhamthath (7-2, 4 KOs) have been inactive for the past nine months, but for different reasons. With his hand fully healed, Chattelle, a Pawtucket, R.I., native will face veteran middleweight Nuri Shakir, of Andover, Mass., a 38-fight vet. Soukhamthath, originally from Woonsocket, R.I., and now living and training with the Blackzillians in West Palm Beach, Fla., faces Long Island, N.Y., bantamweight Tom English (5-4, 2 KOs).

Also included on “CES MMA XXVI” is Providence’s Greg Rebello (16-6, 9 KOs), who’s looking to avenge a loss in June in a cruiserweight bout against submission specialist J.A. Dudley (7-14) of Kearny, N.J., and unbeaten lightweight prospect Jimmy Davidson (7-0, 4 KOs) of Sandwich, Mass., matched up with the tough Leon Davis (5-2, 1 KO) of Springfield, Mass.

Middleweight Joe Cronin (2-1, 1 KO) of Mansfield, Mass., battles Terrell Clark (1-1, 1 KO) of nearby Worcester; unbeaten featherweight Kyle Bochniak (2-0, 1 KO) of Winthrop, Mass., faces fellow Massachusetts vet Ruslan Khubejashvili (2-1) of Norwood; and South Boston featherweight James Murrin (1-1, 1 KO) takes on North Providence’s Devin Pilkington (0-1).

Etches hoping for explosive stoppage against Barbosa

London (17th September) This Saturday night (September 20) in Sheffield, local favourite Adam Etches locks horns with heavy-handed Brazilian Samir Santos Barbosa for the IBF International middleweight title and hopes a stunning knockout win will make the rest of the 160-pound division sit up and take note.

“I’ve watched quite a few videos on him,” said the 23-year-old. “He’s a tough kid and he’s fought for some decent titles over the years. He’s never won a world title, but he’s mixed with some world-class fighters and that shows what kind of pedigree he has. It’s great to share a ring with someone who has been there and done it.

“Of course, every time I get in the ring I want to stop my opponent. It doesn’t matter who I’m fighting. I never want to win on points. This fight with Barbosa is no different. I know it’s not possible to stop everybody, but I always go there with the ambition to get them out of there before the final bell. If I can do that to Barbosa, it will make a big statement to some of the other middleweights in the division.”

The 34-year-old Barbosa was born and raised in Rio Grande, Brazil and has been a professional boxer since August 2001. During his 13-year career he has battled a host of world-class opponents, including Daniel Geale, Sebastian Zbik, Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam and Khoren Gevor, and has a reputation for being powerful yet vulnerable.

He is, therefore, the perfect measuring stick for Etches at this early juncture in his career.

“He can punch and I have to be wary of that,” said the Sheffield star. “He has knocked out five of his last seven opponents, so it certainly won’t be a walk in the park for me. I’ll have to be careful and make sure I don’t get caught myself.

“I think our styles will gel, though, and make for a really exciting fight. He has a similar style to mine but is less skilful. He likes to stand there and have a fight. But, all being well, that should play right into my hands. It’s then just a case of not getting caught, staying focused and taking him out.”

With victory, Etches will add the IBF International middleweight belt to the IBF Youth title he picked up last April. Better still, he will continue to rise up the IBF world middleweight rankings.

“I didn’t start boxing to become a British or European champion,” said Etches, ranked at no.13 with the IBF. “I want to become world champion. It doesn’t matter what world title I win, but it seems the IBF is looking most likely at the moment. I’ve got a good ranking with them and I’m fighting for another one of their minor titles on Saturday. If I keep winning, I’ll keep getting pushed further up the rankings.

“My ultimate aim is to get into that number two slot and force a shot at the world title. But I could also crack the top ten with a good win on Saturday and then be picked by the world champion to fight for the title in a voluntary defence. I wouldn’t say ‘no’ to that, either. To even be in the mix for a world title shot at this early stage of my career is unbelievable.”

Kid Galahad collides with power-punching Brazilian Adeilson Dos Santos in a battle of unbeaten super-bantamweights this Saturday night (September 20) in Sheffield, live on Channel 5 in the UK and on SporTV in Brazil and on FightNetwork in Canada and is sponsored by MaxiNutrition.

Popular Sheffield fighter Scott Jenkins will also be in action along with local fighters Atif Shafiq, Sam O’Maison, Callum Hancock, Jordan Gill of Chatteris and Tyson Fury’s brother Young Fury.

The packed crowd will also see highly regarded featherweight prospect Yusuf Safa from Bexleyheath in action.

Kid Galahad claims he’d “beat Quigg and Frampton on the same night”

London (17 Sept) European and Commonwealth super-bantamweight king Kid Galahad tackles South American opposition this Saturday night (September 20) at the Ponds Forge Arena, Sheffield, when he meets heavy-handed Brazilian Adeilson Dos Santos for the vacant IBF Youth title.

*** Kid Galahad collides with power-punching Brazilian Adeilson Dos Santos in a battle of unbeaten super-bantamweights this Saturday night (September 20) in Sheffield, live on Channel 5 in the UK and on SporTV in Brazil and on FightNetwork in Canada and is sponsored by MaxiNutrition.***

Yet, while his next opponent has Galahad’s full and complete focus, that hasn’t stopped the Sheffield favourite casting an eye over the exploits of his two major domestic rivals, Carl Frampton and Scott Quigg, both of whom were recently involved in world title action.

“Quigg put on a good performance and did what he had to do, but his opponent (Stephane Jamoye) isn’t even really a European-level fighter, at least not at super-bantamweight,” said Galahad. “He was a lot smaller than Quigg and didn’t come with anything to hurt him. But you can only beat the person put in front of you and Quigg did well under the circumstances.

“The thing is, I don’t think Scott Quigg has boxed anybody world-class yet. I personally think Jazza Dickens would beat Scott Quigg if they fought. I wouldn’t even be that competitive.”

Galahad, of course, dramatically stopped Dickens in the tenth round of a bruising British title encounter in September 2013. And, not only does Galahad believe Quigg would steer clear of someone like Dickens, he also believes the WBA Regular champion would avoid fighting Adeilson Dos Santos, too.

“My next opponent is young, he’s hungry and he’s undefeated,” said Galahad, 17-0 (9 KOs). “He has a good amateur pedigree, he’s coming to fight and he’s coming to win.

“Quigg and his people wouldn’t take that kind of risk. They wouldn’t put him in with an unbeaten puncher from Brazil. Quigg knows his level. He’s happy being just a regular champion and fighting kids who aren’t good enough to compete at a world-class level. He has found his level and he’s happy there.

“I personally believe Quigg has overachieved. I don’t see much ability there. I think he has got lucky. When I watch him fight, I see nothing that impresses me.

“Unlike him, I’m not in this game to stand there and get hit. I’m in this game to dish out as much punishment as I can and then not take anything in return. Quigg loves someone to stand in front of him and have a fight. That gives him the chance to plant his feet and punch. But it’s different when you’re getting hit by punches and then not being given the chance to land some of your own. Quigg would have nightmares with me.”

As for Frampton, the newly crowned IBF world super-bantamweight champion, Galahad has a similar prognosis.

“I thought he boxed well,” he said. “(Kiko) Martinez is tough and put up a good fight, but he also looked a little gun-shy and was wary of Frampton’s power because of what happened last time they met.

“Again, though, Kiko was happy to give and take punishment. That made it easy for Frampton to outbox him. But when you get in the ring with me, I don’t give you those chances. You’re only taking punishment with me.

“I personally believe I’d give Frampton a lot of trouble. There’s not much you can do against the kind of style I’ve got. Getting in the ring with me is like playing a game of chess with a Grandmaster.”

For now, though, all the talk is of Frampton and Quigg meeting in a unification match at some point in the near future. It’s a fight Galahad would like to see and one he expects the Belfast man to win.

“I think it would be an easy night for Frampton,” he said. “He’d go in there and do something similar to what he did against Kiko. He might even stop Quigg. He’s much more technical than Quigg and better all-round.”

But if politics ultimately prevent a fight between Frampton and Quigg from happening, Galahad is more than happy to throw his hat in the ring and get involved.

“It’s now about getting the right fights at the right time and building up towards a world title fight in 2015,” said the 24-year-old. “I’m fully confident I’ll fight for a world title next year. And I really hope I’ll fight either Scott Quigg or Carl Frampton. Either of them will do. I personally believe I’d beat them both on the same night.”

The exciting undercard will also see another IBF title up for grabs when Adam Etches fights Samir Santos Barbosa for the IBF International Middleweight title.

Popular Sheffield fighter Scott Jenkins will also be in action along with local fighters Atif Shafiq, Sam O’Maison, Callum Hancock, Jordan Gill of Chatteris and Tyson Fury’s brother Young Fury.

Four additional bouts have been confirmed that will surely add excitement for all mixed martial arts fans in attendance.

Malaysian star Peter Davis returns to the ONE FC cage to take on Filipino Vaughn Donayre. Following her victory over Boxing world champion Ana Julaton, Ann Osman makes a quick turnaround to face the tough Aya Saeid Saber. Anatpong Bunrad and Marc Marcellinus look to wow the crowd in an intense Bantamweight battle. Bashir Ahmad also makes his return by locking horns with Thai opponent, Tanaphong Khunhankaew.

The event will be headlined by the return of “Ruthless” Rob Lisita, as he faces undefeated Russian Marat Gafurov in a featherweight battle which has been previously announced.

CEO of ONE Fighting Championship™ Victor Cui stated, “ONE FC: ROAR OF TIGERS is going to rock Stadium Putra once again with a stacked card filled with the best fighters in the world looking to be victorious inside the ONE FC cage. Peter Davis is a Wuji Chuan exponent and the face of mixed martial arts in Malaysia. Along with being the top lightweight in Malaysia, he is also a prominent celebrity with a long list of modeling and acting roles on his resume. Nelson-Blencowe headlines World Championship Boxing September 27!

Baltimore, MD (September 16, 2014) – Tori “Sho Nuff” Nelson will look for her fourth successful title defense when she puts her WIBA welterweight crown on the line against Arlene Blencowe Saturday, September 27 at the ABC Sports Complex in Springfield, VA.

Tickets to “World Championship Boxing” start at $50 and are available by going to https://www.eventbrite.com/e/ponytail-promotions-wiba-welterweight-world-championship-boxing-tickets-12716538509 or calling 410-499-5361. Doors open at 7 pm and the opening bell will sound an hour later.

A three-time world champion, the pound-for-pound ranked Nelson’s professional record is 10-0 with 3 draws and 1 win by knockout. In 2011, she traveled to Trinidad to outpoint Lorissa Rivas for the WBC middleweight title and she’s held the WIBA welterweight crown since September of 2013. The Virginia native most recently outpointed tough Nicole Woods over ten rounds on June 28.

Most in boxing recognize that records can be deceiving. In today’s era, many fighters pile up 20-plus wins against weak opposition. While this looks good on paper, questions definitely arise about how they’d fare against serious opponents. On the contrary, there are some good fighters that face quality foes off the bat but don’t have great records; fighters like Arlene Blencowe.

In her professional debut, Blencowe defeated unbeaten Nadine Browne (2-0-1) in a six round match. Two bouts later, she dominated Daniella Smith (12-3) over ten rounds to capture two world titles. In her most recent fight, Blencowe dropped a controversial decision against undefeated Sabrina Ostowari (7-0), who also missed weight for their match. To meet Nelson, she’s traveling more than 10,000 miles from her native Australia and plans to return home with a world title around her waist.

“I believe this will be Tori’s most challenging fight to date,” said James Hogan, CEO of Ponytail Promotions. “Regardless of her pro record, Blencowe is a serious fighter and is tougher than a two dollar steak. A lot of fighters would’ve avoided her because she doesn’t have a glossy record, but Tori Nelson is an elite fighter and in order to be the best you’ve got to take on all challengers.”

Highly-touted Tyriesha “Lady Tiga” Douglas of Baltimore faces Whitney Gunter in the semi-main event of the evening. Douglas, 5-0 (1 KO), is considered an elite prospect and is tentatively scheduled to fight for a world title in November.

USBU cruiserweight kingpin Travis Reeves, Seth Billups, Alexandru Marin, Larry Pryor, Edgar Torres and Henry Goss will all appear in separate undercard bouts.

“Ponytail Promotions is pleased with the talent we have on the undercard,” stated Hogan. “Billups and Marin have looked great. Alexandru Marin continues to improve and Travis Reeves is on a roll. The fans will not only get to see a world title fight and a future champion in Tyriesha, but a quality card from top to bottom.”

For more information, go to Ponytailpromotions.com.

Founded in 2014 by respected Baltimore-based boxing businessman James Hogan, Ponytail Promotions envisions becoming one of the top promotional firms in the United States. With a keen interest in both male and female fighters, Ponytail Promotions will run a total of 10-12 shows per year in Maryland, Virginia, Washington DC and North Carolina.

Return of the Saint: Groves media workout – quote

George Groves
Today super middleweight star George Groves conducted a media workout at his Hammersmith gym ahead of Saturday night’s WBC World title final eliminator and European Championship challenge against Christopher Rebrasse at the SSE Arena, Wembley.

Groves was put through his paces by coach Paddy Fitzpatrick and looked in top shape as he enters the final days of training prior to his Wembley return. ‘’I’m chomping at the bit,’’ said the 26 year-old. ‘’Obviously less is more at this stage but we’ve had a very good camp and we’ve enjoyed ourselves. Now I can’t wait to get in there and rock ‘n’ roll. I’m counting down the seconds before I can get back in the ring and back to what I do best.’’

The ‘Return of the Saint’ Groves vs. Rebrasse will be shown live on Sky Sports. Tickets are available via ssearena.co.uk and axs.com or by calling 08448 24 48 24.

Star of David promotions to showcase Pro Boxing on MSG

Brooklyn, NY (September 16, 2014) Star of David Promotions is exceedingly pleased and excited to announce that Mid-Atlantic area fight fans will now be able to check out one of the contenders for 2014 Fight of the Year, the cruiserweight tussle between Junior Wright and Steve Bujaj. This bout thrilled boxing fanatics who saw the two men engage in the heated scrap in Brooklyn.

MSG Network will show that entire Wright-Bujaj scrap, and a ton more action from the early summer show put together by Dmitriy Salita, the fighter/promoter who is happy to be able to showcase his fights on the home of the NBA Knicks and the NHL Rangers.

Viewers can tune in on September 19th at 10pm and the show will also
run September 20th at 7pm.

“Junior Wright versus Steve Bujaj was the best live fight I have ever
seen,” Salita said of a contest for which the WBC International
cruiserweight title was on the line. “It is rare that a fight lives up
to it’s hype but in this case, it exceeded all expectations and then
some. MSG has a long and rich tradition of great fights staged in the
center of the world for boxing, New York City. I am grateful that MSG
will televise this show and New York City boxing fans will get a chance
to see what “Brooklyn Brawl” is all about.

“MSG Network is glad to team up with the Dimitriy Salita and Star of
David Promotions to telecast the thrilling fight between cruiserweights
Junior Wright and Steve Bujaj,” said Ocean MacAdams, senior vice
president, programming, MSG Networks. “We are proud of the classic
fights we telecast on MSG, and this candidate for ‘fight of the year’
is a must-watch for boxing fans.”

Besides the main event fight fans will see world class prospects Steve
Martinez, a two-fisted closer who has trouble getting fights because
boxers fear his power; Dimash Niyazov, a slick stylist; and future
heavyweight superstar Jarrell Miller, who combines power and charisma
in a way which has some insiders tabbing him as a future heavyweight
champion. All are NYC residents climbing their way up the pro ranks to
a world title. Also, pay special attention to unbeaten Russian amateur
standout Alexey Zubov, now living in California, and fighting as a
cruiserweight.

“I fought on MSG myself, winning the Golden Gloves, and as a pro, the
fan recognition that it brings is incredible,” Salita said. “I am
grateful that MSG will bring much needed exposure to these talented,
hungry New York-based fighters.”

Mchunu vs Wilson Scouting Report

Mashantucket, CT: Thabiso “The Rock” Mchunu (16-1, 11 KOs) is a top counter-punching cruiserweight and, on Sept. 20 at Foxwoods Resort Casino, he is facing an opponent in Garrett “The Ultimate Warrior” Wilson (13-7-1, 7 KOs) with a fierce, aggressive offense. Watch out for fireworks when aggression and defense collide in the ring live on NBC Fight Night. Below is the scouting report for this much anticipated battle:

Category
Thabiso “The Rock” Mchunu
Garrett “The Ultimate Warrior” Wilson
Age
26
32
Record
16-1 (11 KOs)
13-7-1 (7 KOs)
Strength
Mchunu is a great defensive fighter with good counter-punching abilities and hand speed. He is also mentally ready for anyone after two major wins coming against former heavyweight title contender “Fast” Eddie Chambers, and the WBC #6 cruiserweight contender Olanrewaju Durodola.
Wilson possesses good punching power in both hands; he recorded knockouts in his previous three wins. His unorthodox style can throw his opponents off his game. He also shows great confidence in the ring and believes that he belongs in there with the best of them.
Weakness
Mchunu tends to become a little too comfortable defensively as the fights progress into the later rounds, when his punch output declines. He may be forced to be more offensive due to Wilson’s aggressive style.
Wilson lacks an effective jab and also allows himself to get hit more often than he should. He throws a lot of wide and looping punches that could backfire in this fight due to the elusiveness and counter-punching abilities of Mchunu.
Experience
Although Mchunu had a long amateur career competing in over 200 amateur bouts, he has not faced the tough opposition that Wilson has faced thus far.
Wilson has been in the ring with many top contenders including the IBF #2 heavyweight contender Vyacheslav Glazkov, and former cruiserweight title contender Alexander Alekseev. Wilson came up short in both bouts, but did manage to take both of those fighters the full distance.
Power
Mchunu has solid power that becomes more noticeable as he lets combinations go. However, he has not recorded a knockout since 2012.
Wilson has gotten stronger as he continues to develop as a fighter, five of his previous six wins have all come by way of knockout.

Speed
Mchunu has tremendous hand speed and is very elusive in the ring making it difficult for opponents to hit him. His speed is what separates him from the rest of the division.
Wilson has average speed so Mchunu has the edge here.

Endurance
Mchunu has gone ten rounds in his last two fights and went the distance in a 12-rounder back in 2010.
Wilson is always in tremendous shape and has gone ten rounds or more in five of his last six fights. Both of these men should have no problem going the distance if needed.
Accuracy
Mchunu has very good accuracy, which he displays during his counter attacks.
Wilson’s accuracy is average, his offensive game relies more on body work if he can work his way inside with a combination of some devastating overhand rights and looping left hooks.
Defense
Mchunu is a defensive-minded fighter, which is what really allows him to generate his offensive game. It will be interesting to see his defensive game plan when he is the taller fighter in the contest for once.
Wilson is more of an offensive-minded fighter, he plans on wearing opponents down and making them fight his fight, which is to stand toe-to-toe and trade shots.

Chin
In his only professional defeat, Mchunu was stopped so his chin is still a question.
Wilson has a solid chin; in his seven career losses, he has only been stopped once which was on his feet.
Style
Mchunu is a defensive-minded counter puncher with exceptional offensive skills.
Wilson is an aggressive, in-your-face type of fighter who is going to do everything he can to land that big shot.
The Match-Up
Will Mchunu be able to break out as a star with a crowd-pleasing performance?
Will Wilson capitalize against a guy who is rated #2 in the world?
Will Mchunu be able to take Wilson’s aggressive offensive style?
Will Wilson be able to make the fight his fight or will it revert to Mchunu’s fight?

According to Main Events’ CEO Kathy Duva, “As a defensive-minded counter puncher, Mchunu needs opponents who will push the action. Garrett Wilson will do just that on September 20th. This fight will be great in the ring and answer any questions fans might have about Thabiso Mchunu. He has a real opportunity here to make an impression on a big audience. After Wilson’s fight with Glazkov last November, we know that he’ll bring everything he has for the fans.”

BattleGrounds MMA: Jesse Taylor, Joe Ray Enter Eight-Man LIVE PPV Tourney

TULSA, OK (Sept. 16, 2014) – Submission ace Jesse “JT Money” Taylor (27-10) and red-hot finisher Joe Ray (11-3) have entered the highly-anticipated BattleGrounds MMA one-night, eight-man, welterweight (170 pounds) tournament that will award its winner a grand prize of $50,000, live on pay-per-view from BOK Center in Tulsa, Okla. on Friday, October 3.

Taylor and Ray will replace Dennis Hallman and Chris Honeycutt, respectively.

“We are thrilled to bring two more highly accomplished competitors like Jesse and Joe into the tournament fold, and are excited by the increased number of potential outcomes that their addition creates for this incredible, one-night event,” said BattleGrounds MMA President and Olympic wrestling gold medalist, Kenny Monday.

A veteran of a number of the world’s current and former top-tier fight promotions, including the UFC, Strikeforce, DREAM and World Series of Fighting, the 6-foot-1, 31-year-old Taylor honed his foundation in wrestling, becoming a two-time Junior College All-American and, later, a standout competitor for NCAA Division I Cal State Fullerton.

Between August 2012 and December 2013, Taylor ran to seven consecutive victories, defeating standouts Kendall “Da Spyder” Grove and Elvis Mutapcic along the way. Taylor also boasts finishes of superstars Denis Kang and Murilo Bustamante.

One of the hottest prospects in MMA, the 5-foot-11, 29-year-old Ray has earned all of his victories to date by (T)KO (7) and submission (4), and enters the BattleGrounds MMA cage on a six-fight winning streak that began nearly three years ago with a first round (1:48) TKO (punches) of Levi LaLonde. In his last start, Ray pulled off an impressive submission of Muay Thai champion Ole Laursen with a guillotine choke in the third round of battle.

Ray relocated from Sarasota, Fla. to Miami in 2007 and began his training in martial arts shortly after the move. In a relatively short time, he has built a powerful foundation in the striking art of Muay Thai, splitting his training camps between American Top Team in South Florida and Tiger Muay Thai in Phuket, Thailand. In addition to his stellar MMA record, Ray owns a 6-1 record in professional Muay Thai and kickboxing competition.

Taylor and Ray join a tournament field comprised of elite competition in submission wizard Cody “AK Kid” McKenzie (15-4) of Spokane, Wash.; two-time, one-night tournament winner Brock Larson (37-8) of Brainerd, Minn.; hard-hitting brawler Luigi “The Italian Tank” Fioravanti (24-11) of St. Louis, Mo.; Urijah Faber protégé David “Bulletproof” Mitchell (14-4) of Lower Lake, Calif.; Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu expert Roan “Jucao” Carneiro (16-9) of Atlanta, Ga.; and Trey “That Just Happened?” Houston (11-2) of Bixby, Okla.

BattleGrounds MMA ‘O.N.E.’ will be distributed at a price point of $19.95 in the United States and Canada by Integrated Sports Media for live viewing, beginning at 10 p.m. EST/7 p.m. PST on both cable and satellite pay-per-view carriers iN DEMAND, DirecTV, DISH and Avail-TVN in the United States and Bell TV and SHAW PPV in Canada. A pre-show will begin at 9 p.m. EST/6 p.m. PST.

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross and recently retired UFC superstar Chael Sonnen will call the action live from cageside.

Additional bouts for the telecast as well as a preliminary bout card will also be announced soon.

Tickets for the event, priced from $65, can be purchased online at www.bokcenter.com as well as at Arby’s Box Office at the BOK Center, all ticket outlets, or by calling 1-800-7-BOKCTR.

Thompson vs. Solis II set for October 18th in Dusseldorf, Germany

odlanier-solis
The rematch between US ring veteran Tony Thompson and Cuban Olympic gold medalist Odlanier Solis will take place on October 18th at CASTELLO in Dusseldorf, Germany. Promoter Ahmet Oner announced that tickets are going on sale today (www.dticket.de).

“We are happy that we reached a deal with the CASTELLO in Dusseldorf. Now we are all set and ready to go”, says Oner. The Turkish promoter hasn’t staged events in Germany for over a year. “This is my comeback in Germany. German boxing is going through some hard times and nearly dead. It’s time for somebody to revive it.”

The success of Oner’s revival is clearly bound to the outcome of the Thompson vs. Solis rematch. In March, the Cuban defector who has been promoted by Oner since turning pro in 2007 lost a close but clear decision to Thompson in a disappointing fight. “This is the last chance for Solis”, states Oner. “He needs to win convincingly to get back to the top. He has so much talent and potential but now he has to show what he’s made of. I invested a lot of time and money in his career. Now he needs to deliver.”

In the co-feature, unbeaten German heavyweight prospect Agit Kabayel (10-0) is taking on unbeaten Memnun Hadzic (8-0) from Bosnia. The card also features former WBC Silver welterweight champion Selcuk Aydin who will try to get back on track after losing three of his last six fights.

For tickets prices 20.-, 35.-, 50.- and 100.- Euros go to www.dticket.de or call +49-211-237-001-237.

Dargan vs. Perez Scouting Report: Who Will Win In A Battle of Speed Versus Power?

Mashantucket, CT: Undefeated lightweight contender Karl “Dynamite” Dargan will face a fierce rival when he takes on Angino “The Nightmare” Perez on Sept. 20, 2014 at Foxwoods Resort Casino and live on the special afternoon edition of Fight Night on NBC. Dargan’s biggest asset is his speed but Perez has power in his arsenal. Who will win this battle of speed versus power? Below is the scouting report for the Junior NABF Lightweight Championship:

Category
Karl “Dynamite” Dargan
Angino Perez
Age
29
31
Record
16-0 (8 KOs)
16-5 (14 KOs)
Strength
Dargan is a good technical fighter with great hand speed. He is very elusive, making it tough for opponents to hit him.
Good height and reach advantage with knockout power in both hands, 14 of his 16 wins have all come by way of knockout.
Weakness
At 16-0, he has not faced the class of fighters that Perez has faced.
Perez has five losses and has been stopped in three of them, so his chin is a concern.
Experience
Dargan had a long and successful amateur career. He also trained with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and “Sugar” Shane Mosley.
Although he came up short in all of them, Perez has been in the ring with current champions and former title challengers such as current WBA Lightweight Champion Richard Abril, Carlos Molina, and Ashley Theophane.
Power
His power comes out during his flurries of punches, seen in his last fight when he knocked out Anthony Flores in the fifth round.
Perez has the advantage in power, having recorded 14 knockouts in 16 victories.

Speed
Dargan has the speed advantage in both his hands and his feet, his speed may be his biggest asset on offense and defense.
Perez has average speed.

Endurance
Dargan has been ten rounds just once in his career, when he defeated Michael Brooks in late 2013. His endurance is yet to be tested.
Perez has only been past the fourth round once (in 2012 in a ten-round unanimous decision loss to Carlos Molina), so his endurance is still a question.

Accuracy
Dargan possesses effective accuracy; he picks his shots wisely and is a great counter-puncher.
Angino possesses average accuracy, he throws a lot of punches but does not pick his shots as well as Dargan.
Defense
Dargan is a defensive fighter who has never been stopped. His defense may be the best part of his game.
Perez has a tendency to throw wide and looping punches that can leave him open for Dargan to take advantage.

Chin
Dargan has been down in his career before but has managed to rise to the occasion and remain undefeated.

All three of Perez’s stoppage losses were in bouts at higher weight classes, so he may have an edge fighting at lightweight.
Style
Dargan is a technical fighter with great defense and counter-punching abilities.
Perez likes to utilize his size and reach to keep you on the outside, as well as mixing in flurries of punches to overwhelm his opponents.
The Match-Up
Will Dargan be able to demonstrate that he’s ready for bigger fights?
Will Perez be able to handle Dargan’s speed?
Will Dargan be able to handle Perez’s power?
Will Perez’s drop in weight class help or hurt him?

Main Events’ CEO Kathy Duva said, “‘Dynamite’ Dargan is right on the cusp of becoming the next big thing in the lightweight division. An impressive win against Angino Perez will put him over the top. Perez has a style that will be entertaining for fans and could be dangerous for Dargan, as well as experience against elite fighters. This is a great match up for NBC that I’m sure Fight Night fans will enjoy.”

“Path to Glory” WBC CABOFE Lightweight Championship Jose Roman vs. Hector Velazquez Friday, Sept. 26, 2014 Doubletree Hotel, Ontario, CA

ORANGE, Calif. (Sept. 15, 2014) – Lightweight champion Jose Roman (17-1-1, 12 KOs) of Garden Grove, Calif. takes the next step in his quest to become a world champion when he defends his WBC CABOFE Lightweight Title against the far more experienced Hector Velazquez (56-22-3, 38 KOs) of Tijuana, Mex. The 8-round “Path to Glory” main event is part of a seven-fight card promoted by Thompson Boxing Promotions, Friday, Sept. 26, from the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, Calif.

Tickets for “Path to Glory” are priced at $100, $60, & $40 are on sale now and can be purchased online at ThompsonBoxing.com or by phone at 714-935-0900.

Roman, 26, is riding a three-fight winning streak, while the veteran Velazquez, 39, is 4-4 in his last eight outings. Velazquez is surprisingly active despite his advanced age, having fought three times this year.

“I’ve been fighting for a long time now and I can honestly say the excitement and passion is still as strong as when I first started boxing,” Velazquez said. “I know Roman is a tough, young boxer that’s going to fight until the final bell.”

“Velazquez has faced Hall of Fame talent throughout his career,” said Jose Roman, who will be making his first defense of the title he won in May. “He’s fought Manny Pacquiao, Israel Vazquez, and Edwin Valero. It’s safe to say he’s not afraid of anyone.”

Roman has never faced such an experienced foe, and even though he we will hold the edge in overall athleticism and speed, battle tested fighters often present a difficult challenge for less seasoned boxers. In order to properly prepare, Roman has loaded up on quality sparring partners. He has mixed it up with welterweight prospect Artemio Reyes, and prior to his retirement, Roman got some quality sparring with former lightweight world champion Julio Diaz.

“Reyes is versatile and crafty,” Roman said. “He’s able to fight on the inside and outside, has excellent reach, and good experience. And because he’s a welterweight, he punches a lot harder than what I’m used to.”

“I was fortunate to spar with Julio Diaz earlier this year and those were great sessions,” Roman continued. “I had to be a little more cautious with him cause he’s more of a counter puncher. If you make a mistake, he’ll make you pay, and he has that experience so he’s super savvy.”

Overseeing the training sessions is the well-regarded Joel Diaz, who will be working Roman’s corner for the fourth time. The pair hit it off last year and the relationship continues to get stronger.

“Joel is able to see things that other trainers might miss, which can make a huge difference in winning or losing a fight,” Roman said. “He gives quality tips and advice in between rounds, and that’s what you really want in a trainer, the ability to make in match adjustments. He’s one of the best at that. He finds mistakes and fixes them.”

In other action, the 8-round co-main event highlights super bantamweights Danny Roman (11-2-1, 5 KOs) of Los Angeles and Jonathan Alcantara (7-11-2, 1 KO) of Sonsonate, El Salvador. Roman is proving to be among the most popular fighters on the Southern California boxing circuit. He typically overwhelms opponents with his rapid-fire jab and sound counter punching. He has won three straight, two by knockout, and is hungry for another KO win.

“Lately I’ve noticed my punches have been doing more damage than before,” Roman said. “We’ve been incorporating some strength training during our recent camps and it’s paid off so far.”

The rest of the card includes:

Undefeated welterweight prospect Taras Shelestyuk (8-0, 6 KOs) of Sumy, Ukraine fights in his first 8-round bout against an opponent to be named later.

Former Colombian Olympian Cesar Villarraga (4-0, 2 KOs) takes on lightweight prospect Oscar Santana (4-1-1, 2 KOs) of Pomona, Calif. in a scheduled 6-rounder.

Junior lightweight Erick Ituarte (7-1-1, 1 KO) of Santa Ana, Calif. looks to rebound from his first loss against Jesus Aguinaga (1-2) of Phoenix, Ariz. (4-rounds).

Undefeated heavyweight prospect LaRon Mitchell (4-0, 4 KOs) of San Francisco aims to stay unbeaten versus Eric Hector Martinez (8-6-1, 5 KOs) of Sacramento (4-rounds).

Opening the “Path to Glory” event is undefeated lightweight prospect Andres Figueroa (4-0, 3 KOs) of Bogota, Colombia. An opponent for Figueroa will be announced at a later date (4-rounds).

Doors open at 6:30 pm, and the first bell rings at 7:45 pm. The Doubletree Hotel is located at 222 N Vineyard Ave, Ontario, CA 91764 and can be reached at (909) 937-0900.

“Path to Glory” is presented by Thompson Boxing Promotions and sponsored by Lucas Oil, in association with KCAL 96.7 FM Rocks!, KOLA 99.9 FM, and LATV Networks.

From Pretender to Contender: The growth of undefeated Middleweight contender Thomas “Cornflake” LaManna

Thomas LaManna
Millville, NJ (September 15, 2014)–Undefeated Middleweight, Thomas LaManna has been proving the doubters wrong since he turned professional in 2011

After a pedestrian amateur career that saw LaManna go just 20-21 plus his “Boy Next Door” looks not much was expected for the now 22-year old.

One thing that he did have going for him was that grew up around the sport as his father Vinny LaManna was a longtime manager and promoter.

“Growing up around the sport is what piqued my interest into wanting to become a boxer,”said the Millville, New Jersey native

He signed a promotional contract with Vincent Ponte’s Gulfstream Promotions and he started on his professional journey.

LaManna started his career with a 1st round stoppage over Anthony Williams on February 11, 2011 in Atlantic City.

LaManna continued to win as he gradually stepped up the competition but he continued to hear from critics that he would be nothing more then a fighter who would only succeed at the local level.

But as the wins kept on coming, the ringside pundits became less vocal and some even started to write more positive articles about young LaManna.

LaManna has scored wins over tough journeymen Josh Williams and Yolexcy Leiva.

LaManna credits a fight against Joshua Snyder that took place on March 8, 2013 in Atlantic City as a turning point in his career.

Thomas pounded out a hard fought 6-round unanimous decision in a fight where he took some punches but fought through some facial swelling.

“The fight against Snyder was my first crossroads fight. He was coming off wins over Aaron Pryor Jr., Maxell Taylor and John Mackey and that was the fight at that point of my career to show people I belonged.”

He then went on to score wins over trial horses Jeremy Yelton and Joshua Robertson before signing a co-promotional contract with Hall of Fame promoter Russell Peltz and Peltz Boxing.

Peltz is known for testing his fighters and LaManna was no different as in his first bout with Peltz, LaManna fought veteran Ashandi Gibbs.

Gibbs had a record of 10-3 but LaManna was able to use his boxing ability to score the 8-round unanimous decision

“That was a tough fight coming off a layoff but I needed that fight to make me better.”

In his last bout, LaManna stepped up his competition even more as he took on grizzled and battle tested Jamaal Davis.

There was a lot of talk around the tri-state boxing community that LaManna would get a serious test and for the first couple rounds he did. He took some flush shots from Davis, who had previously fought Peter Quillin, Gabriel Rosado, Joel Julio, Yuri Foreman and Jorge Melendez to name a few.

After the first two rounds, LaManna settled down and slowly broke Davis down mixing up shots to the head and body and went on to win a clear unanimous decision.

“I think people overlook him because he looks like your next door neighbor,” said Hall of Fame Promoter J Russell Peltz.

“He has good size and he is a real student of the game. He knows fights and fighters. He showed me a lot in the Davis fight. He dug himself a hole but he came on down the stretch. I think he is going places”, finished Peltz””

“I think his development is right on schedule. He came into his own and he has not only surprised myself but a lot of the critics. He has passed any and every test that any and every promoter has put in front of his with with flying colors. In his next fight, I would like to see him fight the caliber of former world champion like Ishe Smith or a Pawel Wolak.”, said LaManna’s Manager/Father Vinny LaManna

“The fight with Davis brought me up another level and I think now some of my early critics realize that I have the talent and potential to do good things in the sport.”, finished Thomas LaManna.

Training Camp Notes: Dargan Lessons from Legends

Philadelphia, PA:When current USBA Atlantic Coast Region Champion Karl “Dynamite” Dargan (16-0, 8 KOs) was growing up in Philadelphia he spent most of his time in the gym with his cousin, world renowned boxing trainer Brother Naazim Richardson. Now, as the undefeated Dargan prepares to add the Junior NABF Lightweight Title to his mantle, he utilizes the lessons he learned from a childhood growing up in boxing.

Dargan grew up surrounded by boxing legends like Bernard “The Alien” Hopkins and “Sugar” Shane Mosley in the gym every day and he was able to get a first-hand boxing education from the best. Karl learned at a young age that with success comes media scrutiny, “Every time I fight on television I get more media coverage but I have been around it my whole life and have experienced this kind of pressure being around Bernard and Shane since I was nine years old.”

Naazim would normally have to teach his young fighters how to handle this additional pressure but not with Dargan, “There are some things we got to skip over because he has been around this his whole life. When I was sitting here wrapping these other guys’ hands they were telling him, ‘Hey man don’t let the television fool you.’ So he got a higher education in this sport at a very young age.”

The lessons he learned from Hopkins still stick with him today. “Knowledge and discipline are two things I learned from Bernard,” explained Dargan. “He lets you know that this is a lifestyle. It is not something you just do when you want to; you have to live it every day.”

“Dynamite” knows the value of his boxing education thus far, “There are a lot of fighters who would kill to be in the position that I am in with Naazim. I don’t take it for granted. It is definitely a blessing.”

For Naazim, training his young cousin is a pleasure, “He is very mature. He carries himself like that. The last fight we had, we didn’t have a good camp and a lot of things went wrong. Enough things went wrong for any other guy to make an excuse but he never made an excuse. When I was complaining, he never complained. He just went on and did the job. That’s the maturity I was talking about.”

The 29-year old manages to stay grounded with the company he keeps. He had his girlfriend, R&B Divas star and recording artist Lil’ Mo, with him at the gym for his open media workout. Steve “USS” Cunningham, Dargan’s good friend and Main Events’ stable mate, scheduled his own workout around Karl’s media workout at James Shuler Memorial Gym in Philadelphia, PA so he could be there to show his support. And, reminiscent of a young Dargan tagging along with Richardson when he was a kid, Steve’s three-year old son, Cruz Cunningham, was toddling around the gym.

TIJUANA’S COSME RIVERA VS. KONSTANTIN PONOMAREV TO HEADLINE SATURDAY’S SOLO BOXEO TECACTE BROADCAST OF IRON BOY 15

PHOENIX — September 15, 2014 — Tijuana’s Cosme “Chino” Rivera (37-18-3) will face Konstantin Ponomarev (24-0, 12KO) in Saturday’s main event bout at Phoenix’s Celebrity Theatre. Andy Ruiz, who was originally slated to be in the main event spot, was forced to withdraw from the contest due to family reasons. The bout will be televised on Unimas’ Solo Boxeo Tecate.

Rivera, who hails from Tijuana, Mexico, promises to be Ponomarev’s toughest opponent to date. In his last outing in May, Rivera knocked out Ty Barnett in the 9th round of a 10-round contest. Barnett was the hometown favorite in the Washington DC bout, and Rivera was subsequently attacked by a local fan.

Russia’s Ponomarev is trained by Jesse Reid Sr., who has described him as a “Young Canizales,” and has said Ponomarev yields tremendous speed, dedication and heart. The ten round contest will take place at 140 lbs.
The card also includes Trevor McCumby (16-0, 12KO) in a 6 round bout, as well as Shane Mosley, Jr. (2-0, 2KO). Robert Garcia trained Oleksandr Gvozdyk (2-0, 1KO) and two-time Olympian Egidijus Kavaliauskas (7-0, 6KO) are also in action on September 20th.

Three-division world champ Amanda Serrano talks about her September 18 bout at the Master Theater in Brooklyn

Brooklyn, NY (September 15, 2014) — Three-division world champion Amanda Serrano (21-1, 16 KO’s) knows first hand that she has a tough fight on her hands this Thursday night at the Master Theater in Brooklyn when he she takes on Jackie Trivilino (9-8-3, 1 KO) in a rematch of a fight that took place on March 20, 2009.

Serrano won a majority decision and now in the long awaited rematch they will headline a seven bout card promoted by Dmitry Salita’s Star of David Promotions.

The Featherweight bout is scheduled for 8-rounds.

The 25 year-old Serrano will be fighting in her native Brooklyn for the first time in three years after fighting in the Dominican Republic and Argentina.

“I feel good. I am ready to fight. I love to fight and it’s going to be a war on Thursday,”said Serrano.

Even though she won the first encounter, Serrano is looking for a more emphatic victory.

“We fought before and now I know a lot more about her. I know she is confident. I am always confident. I am ready.”

Serrano has won belts at 126, 130 and 135 pounds and is considered one of the top female fighters in the world.

“It feels great to be considered one of the best. There is a lot of pressure to keep world championship status. I am here because I have a great team. I am glad to be the first female fighter to be featured on Dmitry’s shows.”

Serrano is happy that she will be at the top of the card in her hometown.

“I am at the level where I am the main event. We have proved to the fans that we can be the co-main event and main event. It gives me an extra umph to be able to featured so high on the card.”

With the perceived lack of opportunities, Serrano’s manager/trainer Jordan Maldonado said that Serrano may have to starting fight abroad more. She has already fought in the Dominican Republic, Sweden and Argentina.

“Going to Europe is the only choice. The American promoters do not see the passion of these girls,”said Maldonado,

“There are great fighters like (newly crowned unified Welterweight champion) Cecilia Braekhus. When we were in Argentina we noticed how much pride they have in their women fighters. It’s big in Peru and it’s funny because I don’t think the fighters anywhere are even is good as the fighters in New York. The women here are superior but we don’t have the backing over here like they do in other parts of the world, so in order to people to win the title, get the recognition and fight for the purses that Amanda is worth, we will have to go over to Europe. All of our fighters are homegrown. We will fight anyone. Amanda just won the WBO title in Argentina. Amanda is not a New York fighter, she is considered a world fighter.”, finished Maldonado.

Serrano conquered by saying, “I want to fight wherever the opportunities are. I am a warrior. I will go anywhere. I took the chance when I went to Argentina and I came home with a the belt.”

“Thursday will be a great fight. The fans should come out and support female fighters and support this show. I want to thank Dmitry Salita for the opportunity to fight at home.”, finished Serrano.

A terrific show has been assembled Salita.

In 6 Round Bouts:

Undefeated Cruiserweight Junior Wright (11-0-1, 9 KO’s) of Chicago returns to the Master Theater when he takes on Kamarah Pasley of Philadelphia.

Brækhus unifies division, Svensson and Skoglund claim titles

Boxing history was made in Copenhagen, Denmark last night. Norwegian star Cecilia Brækhus (26-0, 7 KOs) became the first female boxer to unify a division by holding all four major titles simultaneously. The WBC, WBA & WBO Champion scored a unanimous decision victory over IBF Champion Ivana Habazin (13-2, 5 KOs) to become the undisputed welterweight queen.

Cheered on by her loyal army of travelling Norwegian fans, Brækhus once again proved why she is the pound-for-pound female number one with a classy performance against the tenacious Habazin. All three judges scored the fight 100-90 in favour of ‘The First Lady’.

‘’I’ve been dreaming of this moment for a long time,’’ said Brækhus. ‘’To become the first female boxer to unify a division is a huge achievement and something that I am extremely proud of. I would like to thank all the fans that travelled to Copenhagen to support me and Ivana for the part she played in this historic fight.’’

Said promoter Nisse Sauerland: ‘’Cecilia is a phenomenal athlete. Not only will she go down in history as the first female unified champion but it is our belief that she will be remembered as the greatest female boxer of all time.’’

Brækhus’ success was shared by Swedish stablemates Klara Svensson and Erik Skoglund, both of whom claimed titles at Team Sauerland’s Nordic Fight Night show.

‘The Swedish Princess’ Klara Svensson (14-0, 5 KOs) got her first taste of world glory. The 26 year-old from Malmo defeated Marie Riederer (15-2-1, 10 KOs) for the interim WBC Female World Light Welterweight title. The judges scored the fight 100-90, 100-90 and 99-91 for Svensson.

‘’This was the best performance of my career so far,’’ said Svensson. ‘’Riederer was very tough, I hit her with some big shots and she kept coming. Tonight I have shown that I belong at the top with the world’s elite and I’m ready to challenge for the regular title.’’

Light heavyweight Erik Skoglund (21-0, 11 KOs) continued his climb up the world rankings. The European (EU) and WBC Youth Champion added the IBF Intercontinental crown to his collection with a dominant display against Stefano Abatangelo (18-4-1, 6 KOs). After twelve rounds of action Skoglund was ahead 118-109, 120-106 and 118-108.

Cory Vom Baur to face Victor Henry at inaugural Super Fight League America event

Tacoma, WA (Sept. 12th 2014) Super Fight League, Asia’s most prominent name in Mixed Martial Arts is looking to make a splash stateside, partnering with CageSport MMA and Brian Halquist Productions to bring you Super Fight League America on October 4th at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, WA. In his highly anticipated return to the cage, Vancouver, Washington native “Vicious” Cory Vom Baur (7-2) is set to face Los Angeles’ Victor Henry (7-1) for the SFL America Bantamweight championship in the evening’s 5-round Main Event.

Vom Baur gained national attention last year after defeating Josh Rettinghouse for the CageSport Bantamweight Title. Josh Rettinghouse has since moved on to fight for the World Series of Fighting. Following a Unanimous Decision victory in May of this year, Vom Baur will face his toughest challenge yet in the explosive Henry, who has 5 of 7 victories by way of stoppage. Henry is coming off a huge victory in Japan over well respected Hideo Tokoro.

“We have an incredible fight card on our inaugural Super Fight League – America show,” said promoter, Brian Halquist. “Our current CageSport champion, Cory Vom Baur is facing Victor Henry, flying in from LA. This fight will be all out as both fighters have finished their opponents in a combined 10 out of 14 victories. These guys are two of the best up and coming bantamweights in the country. It will be explosive!”

In the semi-main event, Marion “The Bruiser” Reneau (4-1) looks to keep her 3-fight win streak alive against talented submission expert Colleen “The Thoroughbred” Schneider (5-4) in a 5-round battle inside the cage. Both California natives, Reneau and Schneider are known for their ability to finish their opponents, with all of their combined 9 wins coming by way of either knock out or submission.

“We’re thrilled to have our first women’s title fight. We have hosted many women fights on our shows and we will start developing our women’s rankings and women’s championship fights. We couldn’t have asked for a better fight to start out our title fight with. Both women have stopped every opponent they’ve defeated. This will be a toe to toe scrap that the Northwest MMA fans are sure to be entertained by. It truly is a very incredible fight,” Halquist Commented.

On October 4th, live at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Washington, fans will get a chance to see two fighters trained by the very best, as both Victor Henry and Colleen Schneider will have former UFC Heavyweight Champion Josh “The Warmaster” Barnett in their corner. With 40 professional fights against some of the toughest competition in the history of the sport, Barnett has amassed a stellar 33-7 record and is one of the most recognizable figures in Mixed Martial Arts today.
With two title fights, and a great supporting undercard, it’s guaranteed to be an explosive and exciting night. Both main event fighters are coming off victories earlier this year, and will be putting it all on the line to leave Tacoma with the first SFL-America Title belts around their waist.

“Plus we get to have Josh Barnett’s homecoming of sorts. He is one of the greatest fighters in MMA history and also a Washington State High School wrestling champ,” said Brian Halquist. “Josh will be in the corner of both title fights and we are really excited to bring Josh back home for our first SFL – America show!”

Super Fight League America tickets are on sale now at all Ticketmaster outlets, as well as the Emerald Queen Casino box office. Fans are encouraged to get theirs early, as this show promises to sell out the venue’s 1500 seat capacity. Tickets for this historic Mixed Martial Arts event start at only $35, and with the arrival of the Super Fight League brand here in the U.S.A. this is event is not to be missed.
