Former Champions Ricardo Mayorga and Samuel Peter to Return September 27 in Oklahoma City

Ricardo Mayorga
On Saturday, September 27, 2014, big-name boxing returns to Oklahoma City, as Ivaylo Gotzev and his Epic Sports and Entertainment will proudly present a blockbuster show entitled “Rumble on the River” at OKC Downtown Airpark.

Featured in the dual main events will be the return of a pair of well-known names.

Appearing in separate bouts will be colorful and always entertaining former WBA/WBC Welterweight and former WBC Light Middleweight Champion Ricardo “El Matador” Mayorga (29-8-1, 23 KOs) and hard-hitting former WBC Heavyweight Champion Samuel Peter (34-5, 27 KOs).

Former IBF Light Middleweight champion “Yory Boy” Campas (102-17-3, 79 KOs) will appear in the chief supporting bout.

All three former champions’ opponents will be announced shortly.

Tickets for “Rumble on the River” start at $25 and are available at any Buy For Less location or online at www.airparktickets.com. VIP tables are also available by calling 818.575.0151.

Widely known as “The craziest man in the sport”, Managua, Nicaragua’s Mayorga is a trash-talking street fighter known as much for his habits of smoking and drinking after fights as he is for his tremendous in-ring victories. A pro since 1993, 40-year-old Mayorga has gone to war with nearly every big name in his weight class, including Oscar De La Hoya, Shane Mosley, Fernando Vargas, Vernon Forrest, Miguel Cotto and Felix Trinidad. It was his two victories over the late Forrest that first brought the Nicaraguan strongman into the national spotlight.

Feared for his devastating punching power, Samuel Peter is on the comeback trail. The 33-year-old is originally from Uyo, Nigeria, but now lives and trains in Las Vegas, Nevada. Peter won his title with a TKO 6 over former champ Oleg Maskaev in 2008. He also holds two victories over all-time-great James “Lights Out” Toney and had heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko on the deck three times in their first encounter. He remains the last person to knock Klitschko down.

Campas is a native of Sonora, Mexico. Also known for his devastating power, he began his professional career in 1987 at the age of 15 and won the world championship by knocking out Raul Marquez. Campas made three successful defenses before losing to the great Fernando Vargas.

A full undercard of local and national favorites will be announced shortly.

“I am very excited to be promoting Rumble on the River,” said Ivaylo Gotzev. “We have a well-rested and recommitted Sam Peter eager to return to the ring in one of the main events, plus Ricardo Mayorga, who always entertains the crowd. And supporting them is one of the best overall boxing events in Oklahoma City history. This show’s combination of legendary champions and top local fighters, along with the powerhouse promotional efforts and collaboration of the OKC Airpark, Howard Pollack, and Epic Sports & Entertainment, give us the maximum potential to capture both live and online audiences. Together, we are forging a new boxing tradition and rising-star showcase in Oklahoma City.”

Gotzev says if both Mayorga and Campas get past their opponents, the two former champs have agreed to face each other next.

“Styles make fights and that one would have ‘barn burner’ written all over it, if and when it happens. It won’t be easy for either man to get past their opponents in September, but if they do, we’ve got a war on our hands for the next event!”

On fight night, doors open at 7 pm and the action starts at 8 pm. OKC Airpark is located at 1701 S. Western Avenue in Oklahoma City. All bouts subject to change.

Ashley Theophane talks 36th victory and Mayweather Promotions

ashley-theophane
I turned professional back in the autumn of 2002, but I didn’t make my professional debut until the following summer of 2003. I had to wait 8 long months for the opportunity. The four big promoters in the UK at the time were not interested in taking a chance on me; Mick Hennessey, Frank Warren, Frank Maloney and Barry Hearn all passed on me.

Years later it would make me feel good when it was pointed out to me that I had surpassed all the British fighters in my weight category that they had signed.

Serendipity would strike again when they would all offer me a promotional deal after I had climbed the world ladder, getting ranked fourth in the world and becoming British champion.

Determination, hard work and dedication got me signed by Mayweather Promotions. Whatever I go on to achieve, it will mean that much more to me as I know I did it against the odds.

Floyd Mayweather, the number one boxer in the world and the world’s richest sportsman gave me the platform I’ve dreamt about my whole life. As a 7 year old kid I watched Mike Tyson fight in Las Vegas, now I rub shoulders with the fighters I looked up to then. Roy Jones Jr. and Mike Tyson are two of my favourite fighters – they are now associates of mine.

43 fights, 36 victories, 6 loses and 1 draw. By the end of next year it is possible that I’ll have 40 victories. That is a landmark I am chasing as much as the big pay checks and world title fights. In life you have to have goals that keep you focused and hungry.

The third richest person in the world, Warren Buffet, worth a staggering $56 billion and John Landis, producer of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ were in the gym this week to watch Floyd work out. Every training camp that Floyd has, a who’s who of business, sport and entertainment walk through the doors of the Mayweather Boxing Club.

You always have to remember who believed in you when no one else did. Everyone believes in you or wants to be your friend when you’re “The Man”. The people who are there for you and believe in you when you have nothing are the people to truly cherish.

What someone regards as success and achievements is different for all of us. You have your personal goals that you are pushing for. You know what you are capable of or what you feel you can achieve. It’s can be a very negative world, where people thrive on other people’s sadness and unhappiness. Imagine what people could achieve if they actually helped someone worse off than them? I’ve met people in my life, who helped me when I was expelled from high school, showed me kindness and all they wanted was for me to achieve my potential. Then I’ve met René Carayol who believed I could go from British Champion to the world scene and in the process inspire a generation of forgotten kids, who just like me where and are not supposed to achieve anything in life. Who are just supposed to be statistics on the government’s database?

I told René Carayol, I wanted to be part of The Money Team. I told him I believed I was good enough to get signed by Mayweather Promotions. He gave me the resources to make my dream a reality.

I pushed myself day in and day out to make the grade. 18 months have now passed from that moment and I’ve now been signed to Floyd Mayweather’s promotional outfit for 13 months. I feel blessed and humbled to be a part of Floyd’s team.

I still remember what my goals where as a 22 year old professional fighter. I’ve now achieved it! Now the dream has become bigger. There is no limit on what I can achieve.

Being around men like Floyd Mayweather, Leonard Ellerbe and René Carayol has made me see that. They all believe in me and have helped me push myself to greater heights. I will continue to push myself into unknown and uncomfortable environments. That is where your greatness can be found.

Everything I achieve is a reflection of the hard work my mum instilled in me. She gave birth to Ashley Treasure on August 30th and
Winning on my birthday. The 36th time as a professional is very gratifying indeed.

Every day away from home is one day closer to my goal.

Thank you to everyone who has helped and supported me on my journey.

Szili KO’s Zemski wins UBF world title

Zurich, Switzerland (August 31, 2014)–On Saturday night, August 30, Benedikt Poelchau of (Blanko Sports), held a very successful night of boxing in Volkshaus Zurich, Switzerland. The young passionate promoter put on a great night of boxing that was headlined by the very popular Hungarian middleweight Istvan “The Prince” Szili appearing in an 12-round Universal Boxing Federation (UBF) world championship bout.

Szili (18-0-2, 8KO’s), of Szombathely, Hungary took on the German International champion Matthias Zemski (13-2, 3 KO’s), who coming into the bout was riding a 5 fight winning streak, during his streak he defeated the undefeated Vito Vendetta and Amir Khan of Germany not to be confused with the British world champion Amir Khan in the welterweight division.
It was clear from the opening bell that Zemski came to fight and was determined to extend his winning streak, he was showcasing his technical boxing skills however as the rounds progressed it was clear that Szili was the more skilled, much stronger, faster, and accurate fighter of the two.

Every punch that Szili threw it was with bad intentions; his punches were loud and threw thunderous combinations against the tough and determined Zemski. As the fight progressed towards the 5th round Szili was methodically breaking down Zemski. In round 6 Szili was landed his arsenal and will and caught Zemski with textbook combinations that sent Zemski down unable to get back to his feet.

In other bouts, also featuring Mayweather Promotions’ super middleweights, once-beaten, hard-hitting Badou Jack 16-1-1, 11 KOs), of Stockholm, Sweden, will be opposed by Jason Escalera (15-2-1, 12 KOs) of Union City, N.J., in a 10-round match and Romanian Ronald “Thrill” Gavril (9-0, 7 KOs), who is making his ShoBox debut, will risk his unblemished record against Thomas Falowo (12-2, 8 KOs) of Pawtucket, R.I., in the eight-rounder that will open the telecast.

WEIGHTS: Love weighed 167.5 pounds, Medina tipped scale at 168.6 pounds; Jack weighed 169.4 pounds, Escalera 169.2 pounds; Gavril and Falowo both tipped the scale at 166 pounds.

Tickets for the event, sponsored by Corona, are priced at $25, $50, $75 and $100, plus applicable taxes, fees and service are on sale now and available for purchase by clicking HERE. The first live, non-televised preliminary fight starts at 3 p.m. PT.

Below is what the fighters had to say prior to Friday’s weigh-in:

J’LEON LOVE:

“I’ve been caught with punches in the past and have been able to bounce back and get the victory. It shows that I can make improvements on the fly and overcome adversity.

“I believe that I am two fights away from a title shot. I will take care of business in this fight and go from there. I just need to be myself and execute. I believe in my punches, and when I am in that ring there is never any fear that comes into my body.

“Badou [Jack] let me know about [Rogelio] Medina. He’s a tough guy who will come prepared to fight. I respect that, but I would do the same,

“Each and every day that I train, I learn something new. I have a great team and trainer that constantly tell me that I am only as good as my last fight.

“I must keep my hands up, stay consistent with my punches and not throw any lazy jabs, because that’s what caught me in my last fight. I want to keep excelling as a fighter, silence my critics and stay humble.

“There is a certain level of expectation when you’re a part of TMT [The Money Team]. I know that everyone associated with this team doesn’t accept anything less than the best.”

ROGELIO MEDINA:

“I feel very strong going into this fight. I am very well prepared.

“In the past when I moved up a weight class I fought well, but didn’t win. The reason for that was I wasn’t properly prepared going into those fights to take the punches, but for this fight I have constantly been training for the past three months.

“I feel that I can beat anyone in the 168-pound weight class.

“My opponent likes to trade punches, has no fear and is in great shape. But, he isn’t always consistent with his punches and has a suspect chin. I am ready to pressure him every round and I am prepared for a 10-round fight.

“All the fighters on TMT want to fight like Floyd [Mayweather]. The problem with that is there is only one Floyd and you must be yourself and not try to fight like someone else.

“I will give it everything I have in the ring tomorrow and a victory would be huge for me and open up many doors.”

BADOU JACK

“In my last fight [loss to Derek Edwards], he caught me cold when I ran into his punch. I have learned a great deal from that fight that I will use to my advantage in fighting my opponent tomorrow. I must keep my distance and use my height and range.

“A title fight is definitely a possibility in the future, but I never look past my next opponent. I am focused solely on him and there is nothing else going through my mind.

“My opponent puts constant pressure on and doesn’t move his head. I feel like his style fits well into my style. I plan to wear him down with body shots, use my range and height to my advantage. I have no fear.

“I am very focused on my career and I don’t worry about anything else. You will see a very different Badou in this fight in relation to my last bout.”

JASON ESCALERA

“This is the biggest fight of my career and I am very excited and ready for this opportunity.

“I must keep pressure on him with constant punches and refresh him about his last fight.

“I am honestly surprised that I got this fight. Since [Badou] Jack is coming off of a loss, I figured he would want to fight someone who wasn’t a puncher, but I will not back down.”

RONALD GAVRIL:

“I had a great amateur career for 10 years in Romania, but the United States is the best place to fight. I couldn’t be happier with the decision I made to come over here to advance my professional career.

“I am a workhorse that is all business and no flash. I am very focused on my goals and won’t let anything get in my way. I have a great attitude and work ethic with technique and skill.

“With my trainer [Eddie Mustafa Muhammad], I am learning how to shorten up my punches, but I have always been a big puncher. My defense is also improving every day.

“My opponent is a solid fighter and I believe that he is going to be the toughest test of my professional career to date. I want to make him tired and uncomfortable in the ring.

“My team says I may have a shorter road to the title than other fighters. I believe I have what it takes to one day be world champion.”

THOMAS FALOWO:

“I’m very excited about fighting on ShoBox and grateful for the opportunity. I’m ready to prove that I belong to fight on the big stage.

“I’ve had tougher fights, but this is definitely my biggest fight. I feel that I’m more ready than ever and that this fight came along at a perfect time.

“This would be a huge step in the right direction if I come out with the victory. I know that everything will fall into place for me if I stay focused in the ring.

“My opponent has a similar style; we both like to throw big punches. He had a good amateur career and has been doing OK as a pro. But he’s definitely never a fighter of my caliber.

“I know that the fans will really enjoy watching our fight. I have always been a fan favorite and Saturday night I will not disappoint.”

Barry Tompkins will call the ShoBox action from ringside with boxing historian Steve Farhood and former World Champion Raul Marquez serving as expert analysts. The executive producer is Gordon Hall with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.

The 10-round co-main event will see unbeaten Caguas lightweight Jeffrey Fontanez take on Mexico City’s Gilberto Gonzalez, and in the televised 10-round lightweight opener, Los Mochis’ Roberto Manzanarez meets up with Mexicali’s Ricardo Castillo.

A ferocious puncher with dynamite in his fists, Juan Pablo “Che Che” Lopez (25-3, 21 KOs) is a crowd pleaser of the highest order, and with 18 of his 25 wins coming by knockout in three rounds or less, the Tijuana native isn’t one to stick around longer than he has to in the ring. On Saturday, he will meet up with 30-year-old Puerto Rican veteran Fernando Torres (18-5-1, 10 KOs), an eight-year pro hoping to take Lopez into some deep waters and score the upset in Cancun.

A rising star from the boxing rich island of Puerto Rico, Caguas’ Jeffrey Fontanez (15-0, 11 KOs) continues to grow into a top-flight boxer in front of the world. Owner of 2014 wins over Orlando Vazquez and Adrian Verdugo, the 22-year-old will make his debut in Mexico against Mexico City’s Gilberto “Flaco” Gonzalez (22-3, 18 KOs), an experienced power puncher who has won four straight, all by knockout, making this one of the most highly-anticipated bouts of the weekend.

19-year-old lightweight phenom Robert “Tito” Manzanarez (27-1, 23 KOs) has compiled an amazing record as a teenager, and the sky is the limit for the Los Mochis product, who holds the WBC Youth Intercontinental title that he has defended three times. Currently on a six fight winning streak with all wins coming by knockout, Manzanarez will seek a seventh consecutive victory this Saturday against experienced Mexicali native Ricardo “Piolo” Castillo (40-11-1, 26 KOs), the brother of former world champion Jose Luis Castillo, and a three-time former world title challenger himself.

Lopez vs. Torres, a 10-round welterweight bout, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Pepe Gomez Cancun Boxing and sponsored by Corona. Doors open at 6pm CT and the first fight begins at 6:30pm CT. The Televisa broadcast will air on Canal 5 and begins at 10:30pm CST (Delayed Broadcast) and the FOX Deportes broadcast will air at 10 pm ET/7pm PT (Live Broadcast).

SHINYA AOKI REMAINS ONE FC LIGHTWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION AT ONE FC: REIGN OF CHAMPIONS

29 August 2014 – Dubai: ONE Fighting Championship™ (ONE FC), Asia’s largest Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) organization with a 90% market share, held its most successful event at the Dubai World Trade Centre this evening as three ONE FC World Championships were on the line at ONE FC: REIGN OF CHAMPIONS. Shinya Aoki retained his ONE FC Lightweight World Championship while Ben Askren and Narantungalag Jamdambaa emerged as new world champions in the welterweight and featherweight divisions respectively.

Shinya Aoki showcased his legendary grappling skills in the first defense of his ONE FC Lightweight World Championship against Kamal Shalorus, impressively submitting his opponent to retain the title. Aoki’s suffocating positional control allowed him to wear on Shalorus before taking the wrestler’s back and tightening a rear naked choke, causing Shalorus to tap out.

Ben Askren gave Nobutatsu Suzuki absolutely no quarter, taking less than two minutes to finish his opponent and dethrone him as ONE FC Welterweight World Champion. Askren used his unparalleled wrestling to take Suzuki down right from the opening bell. He blitzed Suzuki with a barrage of unanswered punches causing the referee to stop the fight and award Askren the TKO victory and the title.

Narantungalag Jadambaa’s superior striking skills proved to be the difference in the ONE FC Featherweight World Championship bout against Koji Oishi. Both Oishi and Jadambaa began the bout tentatively until the Mongolian landed an impressive slam in the first round. A striking combination by Jadambaa dropped Oishi in the second round but Oishi hung on despite a relentless barrage of strikes. Both Oishi and Jadambaa landed powerful punches in the third round, as they battled on to the delight of the sold out crowd. Jadambaa was the more offensive striker in the fourth round, landing several punches and kicks. He then landed with even more precision in the fifth round and was deemed the winner by all three judges.

Roger Huerta returned to the ONE FC cage in emphatic fashion by knocking out Christian Holley in the first round. Holley threw a head kick that landed but Huerta caught the leg and took Holley down. After a brief grappling exchange, Huerta landed in side control and unleashed several knees. Huerta then transitioned to his opponent’s back, unloading a barrage of punches which resulted in a stoppage victory.

James McSweeney proved once again why he is one of the deadliest strikers in the world by clinically knocking out Cristiano Kaminishi. McSweeney landed a straight punch that had Kaminishi reeling. As Kaminishi stumbled backwards, McSweeney followed up and landed a devastating kick to the head. McSweeney demonstrated sportsmanship in holding back another kick as referee Oliver Coste jumped in to stop the bout.

The grappling prowess of Herbert Burns proved to be too much for Hiroshige Tanaka to handle, allowing the Brazilian black belt to clinch a unanimous decision victory. Burns quickly asserted himself in the first round with kicks and takedowns from the clinch. Burns came close to finishing Tanaka with a rear naked choke but Tanaka managed to stave off the attempt and get back to his feet. He managed to take Tanaka down again in the second round, and landed a crushing knee while Tanaka was trying to stand back up. Tanaka landed a flurry of punches while Burns was pinned up against the cage in the third round, but Burns quickly recovered and took Tanaka down. Burns landed several knees in the closing seconds to end the bout, picking up the decision victory.

Mohamad Walid and Vaughn Donayre put on a fast-paced bout that ended with Walid securing the submission. Both mixed martial artists kicked off the action by swinging wildly with hard punches. Walid then jumped guard as Donayre decided not to engage. Once the fight restarted on the feet, Walid quickly shot for the takedown, and from full mount position along the cage locked in a quick armbar that forced Donayre to tap out.

The bout between striking specialist Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke and Ali Yaakub began with an exchange of devastating leg kicks and hard punches before Amnuaysirichoke elected to demonstrate his newfound grappling skills. Amnuaysirichoke quickly took Yaakub down and secured a rear naked choke submission to end the bout slightly over two minutes into the first round.

Female mixed martial arts stars Ana Julaton and Ann Osman kicked off the show in spectacular fashion. Osman dominated the first round with her superior wrestling skills and had Julaton in an armbar submission attempt as time expired. Osman again came close to finishing with an armbar attempt in the second round, but Julaton fought out of it to get top position, raining down punches of her own. Julaton started the third round by stringing together an impressive boxing combination, but Osman managed to close the distance and take Julaton down once again. Julaton managed to reverse the position and landed several knees from guard. Both mixed martial artists had their respective flags draped over their shoulders as Ann Osman was declared the winner via split decision.

Andre_Berto
CINCINNATI (Aug. 29, 2014) -Former welterweight world champion Andre Berto will open the
three-fight SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast on Saturday, Sept. 6 from U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio against upset-minded veteran Steve Upsher of Philadelphia in a 10-round welterweight bout, live on SHOWTIME immediately following
“ALL ACCESS: Mayweather vs. Maidana 2” Episode 2 premiere at 9 p.m. ET/ 6 p.m. PT.

In the main event, former three-division world champion Adrien “The Problem” Broner fights in front of his hometown fans against Emanuel “Tranzformer” Taylor, and in the co-main event, Argentine knockout artist Lucas “La Maquina” Matthysse battles undefeated Roberto Ortiz.

Before the trio of exciting fights gets underway Newark’s pride Michael “The Artist” Perez will battle for the WBA Fedelatin Super Lightweight Title against South Carolina’s Jared “The Quiet Storm” Robinson in a 10-round bout on SHOWTIME EXTREME® (live at 7 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast). In the opening bout, Rau’shee Wareen will face Jose Luis Araiza in a 10-round bantamweight match.

On the non-televised portion of the card, three-time United States Olympian Terrell Gausha will face an opponent to be named in an middleweight bout.

Two-time welterweight world champion and former Haitian Olympian Andre Berto (28-3, 22 KOs) is consistently one of boxing’s most exciting fighters. Berto, coming off a year-long layoff and recouping from shoulder surgery, says he intends to remind fight fans of just that. Fully healed and coming off his thrilling 2013 bout with Jesus Soto Karass, the Winter Haven, Fla., native will celebrate his 31st birthday a day early when he performs for fight fans in Cincinnati against Upsher.

Philadelphia’s Steve Upsher (24-3-1, 6 KOs) has been a respected member of the east coast fight community for years and is known for his ring knowledge, boxing skill and heart. A pro since 2003, the 29-year-old came up the hard way on the Philly fight circuit, and while he’s looking to bounce back from losses to Eddie Gomez and Luis Collazo, he has all the tools to give Berto a rough night and spoil his comeback attempt.

The 24-year-old Michael Perez (20-1-2, 10 KOs) is on an impressive hot streak, as he’s gone 5-0-1 in his last six fights, a stretch that includes back-to-back wins over Miguel Zuniga and Jorge Romero in his most recent bouts. The 31-year-old Jared Robinson (15-1, 7 KOs) has been patient in his rise through the division, and this Sept. 6 bout is the one he’s been waiting for, as he hopes to shine on national television.

Rau’shee Warren (11-0, 3 KOs) has been a steady performer throughout his pro career, and on Sept. 6 he gets the opportunity to fight in his hometown of Cincinnati for the first time as a pro when he takes on Tecate Baja California, Mexico’s Jose Luis “Tapitas” Araiza (34-8-1, 25 KOs) in a 10-round bantamweight matchup. The 27-year-old Warren has dazzled against his opponents, barely losing a round in the process. The veteran Araiza, who has won two straight, will be Warren’s most experienced opponent to date.

Two of Warren’s 2012 Olympic teammates, Cleveland middleweight Terrell Gausha (11-0, 6 KOs) and New York lightweight Jamel Herring (8-0, 5 KOs), will also be back in action at the U.S. Bank Arena when they face opponents to be announced in eight-round bouts.

In other non-televised bouts, making the short trip from Toledo will be lightweight up-and-comer Robert Easter Jr. (10-0, 8 KOs), a hard-hitting talent who will take on a foe to be determined in a 10-round bout. Other Ohio favorites in action will be lightweight Raynell Williams (4-0, 3 KOs) of Cleveland and super welterweight Jamontay Clark (2-0, 2 KOs) of Cincinnati. Williams will face an opponent to be determined and Clark faces Bryan, Ohio’s Matthew Montalvo (0-0-1). Both bouts are scheduled for four rounds, as is a lightweight matchup between Washington, D.C.’s Lamont Roach (2-0, 1 KO) and Las Vegas’ Rocco Espinoza (4-8).

WBO Jr. Welterweight champion Chris Algieri Chosen to be Grand Marshal at 5th Annual Huntington Awareness Day Parade

Pacquiao-Algieri-8-25PC-Macau-1024-670-04
World champion boxer Chris Algieri and longtime community leaders Anthony Mastrioanni and Thomas Jerideau will be honored as grand marshals when the Fifth Annual Huntington Awareness Day parade kicks off on Saturday, September 6.

First held in 2010, Huntington Awareness Day has become an annual tradition, with thousands of people turning out to celebrate the community’s unity, diversity and solidarity.

As in previous years, bands, floats, vintage cars, service groups and local merchants will join the march down New York Avenue through Huntington Station from West Hills Road to the pedestrian plaza at Olive Street. Following a brief ceremony, everyone will cross New York Avenue to the fair in the municipal parking lot between Railroad and Church Streets. The fair will include performances by local artists and booths offering crafts and services. The parade will begin at 11 a.m. and the fair will remain open until 5 p.m.

This year’s honorees span different generations and areas of expertise. Algieri, 30, grew up in Huntington and graduated from St. Anthony’s High School, where he captained the varsity wrestling team and later served as an assistant coach. He graduated from Stony Brook University, with honors, with a degree in health care management and later earned a master’s degree from the New York Institute of Technology. A kickboxer in college, Algieri won the International Sport Karate Association’s Welterweight and World Kickboxing Association Super Welterweight Championships before retiring as a kickboxer to take up prizefighting.

He currently has a record of 20-0 as a professional prizefighter, including a unanimous decision over ranked contender Emmanuel Taylor at the Paramount Theater in February and his biggest victory, on the nationally televised HBO After Dark® June 14, in which he defeated
Ruslan Provodnikov at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn to become the
WBO Light Welterweight Champion. He is currently signed to fight the legendary
Manny Pacquiao on Nov. 22 in Macau, China, for Pacquiao’s world welterweight title.

Mastrioanni, 83, is a longtime Huntington Station resident who has had distinguished careers in the public, private and political sectors, most notably serving several terms as Huntington Republican chairman and as Suffolk County’s public administrator. A Korean War veteran, he is a charter member and past national vice commander of the Navy Seabee Veterans of America and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. A graduate of SUNY Farmingdale (he also holds a master’s degree from Long Island University’s C.W. Post College), he served for more than three decades as a member of the college’s council, including stints as its vice chair and acting chair. He is a former member of the board of directors of the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce.

Jerideau, 85, retired from the New York City Transit Authority more than 30 years ago, and since then has been active in many panels and civic activities, beginning with his appointment in 1982 to the Town’s Mass Transit Citizen’s Advisory Council, which he later chaired. He has been a member of the Huntington African American Task Force, the Huntington Station Revitalization Task Force and, for the past 21 years, a member and chair of the Town’s Board of Assessment Review. He is also the longtime president of the Whitman Village Cooperative Board and has worked to help make the Huntington Awareness Day fair possible

“Huntington is proud of the contributions Chris, Tony and Tom have made to our Town and we are thrilled that they will be leading the annual parade celebrating the community we all love,” Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone said. “I hope people will line New York Avenue to show their appreciation, and then visit the fair that gets bigger and better every year.”

“Through the generosity of our sponsors and from other donations, we have been able to keep all events and rides free of charge, so everyone in the community can enjoy this special day,” said Dolores Thompson, who co-chairs the event with Supervisor Petrone. “It is also gratifying to see that an event that started five years ago as a single expression of community pride has now become an annual tradition.”

Persons can obtain details about sponsorship or parade participation and download the forms at the website www.huntingtonawareness.org, They can also obtain updates about the parade and festival by “liking” the Unity in the Community-Huntington Awareness Day Facebook page or (www.facebook.com/HACPHuntingtonAwarenessDay) or by following @HuntingtonDay on Twitter.

JOSE RAMIREZ, USA OLYMPIAN & UNDEFEATED PROFESSIONAL, VISITS VALLEY CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

Central California (August 29, 2014) – USA Olympian and undefeated as a pro, Jose Ramirez (11-0, 8 KOs) from Avenal, California, spent the day at Valley Children’s Hospital in Central California visiting kids in the Cancer Center. Ramirez brought many smiles and joy to the children and their families by signing pictures, playing games and giving 1000 free tickets to the hospital families for his Oct 25th Nationally televised fight at Selland Arena in Fresno, California.

“These kids are in a real fight, the fight of their lives, and it was an honor to visit them. I was inspired by each and everyone one of them,” Jose Ramirez

“It put things in perspective on how blessed we really are after today. Ramirez will soon be a champion in the ring but for many he is already a champion outside of it,” said Agent/Promoter Rick Mirigian,

Nelson: I could still beat ‘plastic’ champion Huck

Tomorrow night in Halle, Germany WBO World Cruiserweight Champion Marco Huck (37-2-1, 26 KOs) will attempt to equal Johnny Nelson’s record for the most title defences in the cruiserweight division when he faces Mirko Larghetti (21-0, 13 KOs) at the Gerry Weber Stadium.

As Huck threatens to match Nelson’s record of thirteen successful defences, ‘’The Entertainer’’ has exclusively revealed that he would consider a sensational return to the ring to face the ”plastic” champion and reclaim his WBO title.

‘’There are only a handful of world champions who can truly be considered the best in the world and in my opinion Marco Huck is not one of them,’’ said Nelson. ‘’No disrespect to the kid but to get people to sit up, pay attention and consider him the best, he needs to fight outside of Germany, away from his home comforts.

‘’I fought all over the world and defended my title against the very best. I proved that I was the top fighter in the division. At the moment Huck has a plastic crown, to make it gold he needs to prove himself outside of Germany.’’

Nelson retired in 2005 ending a seven-year reign as WBO Champion. Despite nine years of inactivity, the 47 year-old believes he still has what it takes to beat Huck and admits he could be tempted out of retirement to defend his record against the reigning champion.

‘’In my prime Huck wouldn’t have stood a chance, without a doubt, the fight wouldn’t of gone the distance. Even now, a decade later, I know I could beat him. If the interest was there I would seriously consider coming out of retirement to defend my record. I would just need six months to sharpen up and I would be ready.’’

Huck has wasted no time in responding to Nelson’s remarks. ’’I have a lot of respect for Johnny and everything he achieved but he can’t be serious,’’ said the 29 year-old champion. ‘’I think he is just upset that tomorrow I will match his record and in my next fight I will break it. But if he is serious and the fans wanted to see it, I would happily give him a beating in the ring.’’

Huck’s coach, the legendary German trainer, Ulli Wegner, has also had his say, questioning Nelson’s ability to prepare himself physically for return to the ring and labelling the former champion ‘’lazy’’.

‘’I remember Johnny Nelson,’’ said Wegner. ‘’He came over for sparring ten or eleven times, and each time he would only do the bare minimum. He was a gifted boxer but in terms of laziness no one could hold a candle to him. I don’t believe he can or will want to get back into fighting shape. He should continue to focus on his job in television because a fight with Marco would end in embarrassment.’’

Tickets for the WBO World Cruiserweight title clash between Marco Huck and Mirko Larghertti are available via www.gerryweber-world.de.

Austin Trout and Mikey Garcia, supporting undefeated prospects in San Antonio on Saturday, August 30

Austin_Trout
Former WBA Junior Middleweight Champion Austin “No Doubt” Trout and two division world titlist Mikey Garcia will be in San Antonio, Texas, this Saturday night, showing their mutual support for all competing young prospects at TMB Entertainment and Triple A Promotions’ “Battle at the Ballpark”.

“I know how difficult this sport can be and it’s definitely not for everyone,” admits Austin Trout. “Any fighter who has the courage to step in the ring and take punches for the entertainment of others deserves recognition and encouragement. That’s what the boxing community is all about. Showing our support for each other.”

The nine bout fight card is slated to take place at Nelson Wolff Municipal Stadium in the Alamo City, and will feature some of San Antonio’s most promising undefeated talent.

Five time amateur champion Cresencio “Kid Thunder” Ramos will be making his long awaited professional debut, explosive counter puncher Adam “Mantequilla” Lopez (8-0, 3 KOs), currently trained by two time world champion Carlos “El Famoso” Hernandez, will attempt to keep his impressive unbeaten streak alive, and Javier “The Pitbull” Rodriguez (10-0-1, 1 KO), one of the more exciting and fan friendly fighters in Texas, will look to close the show in style with another drama filled performance.

Mikey Garcia is excited to attend the August 30th fight card as well.

“I think it’s great what Rick Morones Jr. (President of TMB Entertainment) is doing for the hungry, young talent in San Antonio,” states the current WBO Super Featherweight Champion. “A fighter can’t achieve their true potential in the sport without opportunities to showcase their talents. I’m really looking forward to seeing what these young fighters have to offer on Saturday night.”

Also featured on the bout sheet will be undefeated, devastating puncher Armando “El Cartero” Cardenas (4-0, 3 KOs), who is currently being mentored by legendary architect of San Antonio boxing Joe Lopez. The head trainer at the world renowned Angel’s Boxing Club cultivated the Alamo City’s first world champion in Robert “El Pikin” Quiroga 24 years ago, and is hoping to nurture another San Antonio born world champion in Cardenas.

Austin is anticipating another warm reception from the avid Texas fight fans on Saturday night.

“San Antonio showed me a lot of love when I fought Canelo Alvarez in the Alamodome last year, so I think it’s only fitting that I show them some in return,” professes the former WBA Junior Middleweight Champion. “I’m looking forward to a great evening of boxing.”

Plus, undefeated welterweight Antonio Orozco of San Diego meets meet former World Champion Steve “2Pound” Forbes in the 10-round co-main event.

Also in action will be unbeaten phenom Diego De La Hoya who will make his fourth appearance in Indio in a six round opening televised fight against an opponent to be announced and visiting Fantasy Springs Resort Casino as the special VIP guest to meet and greet fans will be International Boxing Hall of Famer, president and founder of Golden Boy Promotions, Oscar De La Hoya.

“It’s always an exciting night when we can put on an event at Fantasy Springs and this will be no exception,” said Oscar De La Hoya. “Ronny Rios and Antonio Orozco are two of this area’s most talented fighters and we’ll see if they’re ready for the next level on October 9. I’m also looking forward to seeing the new De La Hoya era take charge with my cousin Diego in the ring again and meeting everyone on fight night and talking about this great sport and what we can do to make it even better.”

Rios vs. Castellanos,a 10-round junior lightweight bout, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Corona Extra, O’Reilly Auto Parts and Golden Ram Group. The FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes broadcast airs live at 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT.

Santa Ana’s Ronny Rios (23-0, 10 KOs) can do it all in the ring and that ability has led him to an undefeated record in one of boxing’s toughest divisions. A standout amateur that transitioned smoothly to the pro game, the 24-year-old began making big moves in 2013, starting with his defeat of former world champion Rico Ramos for the NABF title. Since then, Rios has added three more wins, most recently defeating Andrew Cancio in April.

Celaya Guanajuato, Mexico’s Robinson Castellanos’ (19-10, 12 KOs) record can be deceiving as the the 12-year professional hit a late stride in his career. The 32-year-old had a a rough start but has now boiunced back and won 11 of his last 12 bouts, including victories against Celestino Caballero and Derrick Wilson.

Well deserving of the nickname “Relentless,” Antonio Orozco (20-0, 15 KOs) of Tecate, Baja California Mexico who now lives and trains out of San Diego, is a fearsome force in the ring, and he’s prepared to make his move toward a world title shot in 2015. With 2014 victories over veterans Miguel Angel Huerta and Martin Honorio, the 26-year-old knows another notable victory against Steve Forbes will help him make his case for a shot at the division’s elite.

A seasoned veteran whose world championship experience has earned him respect throughout the boxing world, former Junior Lightweight World Champion Steve Forbes (35-13, 11 KOs) believes that at age 37, he still has another title run left in him. Hailing from Los Angeles, Forbes has been in with the best of the best over the years, including Oscar De La Hoya, Andre Berto, Cornelius Bundrage, Carlos Hernandez and John Brown. On October 9, he aims to use his experience to hand the younger Orozco his first loss in Indio.

Just 20-years-old, Mexicali’s Diego De La Hoya (6-0, 5 KOs), who will be fighting an opponent to be determined, has made remarkable progress since turning professional in September of 2012. Unbeaten in four 2014 bouts, “The Golden Kid” is coming off of a fifth round technical knockout over Miguel Tamayo in his Las Vegas debut in July.

‘RED DAWN’ Artur Beterbiev vs. Tavoris Cloud NABA Light Heavyweight Championship

cloud_tavoris
MONTREAL (August 27, 2014) – Former world amateur champion and two-time Russian Olympian Artur Beterbiev (5-0-0, 5 KOs), who moved to Montreal more than a year ago when he first turned professional, will face former International Boxing Federation (IBF) light heavyweight champion Tavoris “Thunder” Cloud (24-2-0, 19 KOs), Saturday night, September 27 at Bell Centre in Montreal.

“Red Dawn,” featuring Beterbiev vs. Cloud for the vacant North American Boxing Association (NABA) light heavyweight title, is co-promoted by Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM) and InterBox, in association with Eye of the Tiger Management (EOTTM) and the participation of Don King Productions (DKP), and co-presented by Mise-O-Jeu and Videotron.

Beterbiev, 29, has lived with his family in Laval for more than one year. His wife gave birth to their third child a few weeks ago at St. Mary’s General Hospital in Montreal. The newborn, Sofia, joined siblings Akhmad, 4, and 2-year-old Amira in the Beterbiev family. A graduate of the University of Dagestan in Makhachkala with a degree in law, Beterbiev had an outstanding amateur career, earning gold medals as a heavyweight in the 2006 World Cup in Baku and 2008 World Cup in Moscow, as well as at the 2009 World Championships in Milan. He also participated in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, bowing out in the second round to the eventual gold medalist, Zhang Xiaoping, of China. Beterbiev also fought at the 2012 London Olympics, where he lost in the quarterfinals to eventual Olympic champion Oleksandr Usyk, of Ukraine. During his incredible amateur career, Beterbiev was crowned Russian and European champion. He has defeated renowned boxers such as Sergey Kovalev twice, Ismayl Sillakh, Michael Hunter Jr., Abbos Atoev and many others. With Anna Reva as his manager, Beterbiev turned pro in 2013 and he is undefeated with all five victories by knockout, fighting a total of only 11 rounds.

The 32-year-old Cloud, fighting out of Tallahassee, Florida, was the IBF light heavyweight champion for four of his 10-year pro career. He originally won the IBF 175-pound championship in 2009 by way of a 12-round decision over Clinton Woods (42-4-1, 25 KOs), successfully defended his IBF title four times against former world champions Glen Johnson (50-13-2, 34 KOs) and Gabriel Campillo (21-3-1, 8 KOs), as well as challengers Fulgencio Zuniga (24-4-1, 21 KOs) and Yusaf Mack (29-3-2, 17 KOs). Cloud’s unbeaten win streak was stopped at 24, along with his championship reign, March 2013 in New York as he lost by 12-round decision to the phenomenal Bernard Hopkins (52-6-2, 32 KOs) . In his attempt to regain a world title on Sept. 28, 2013, Cloud was stopped after seven rounds by World Boxing Council (WBC) light heavyweight champion Adonis “Superman” Stevenson (24-1-0, 20 KOs) at Bell Centre.

According to The Ring, Cloud is ranked No. 7 among the best heavyweight in the world, in addition to No. 9 by the WBC and No. 15 by the World Boxing Association (WBA). He has suffered only two defeats during in his pro career, one prior to the distance, but he has never been knocked down. More significantly, Cloud has a decided advantage over Beterbiev in experience having fought a total of 130 rounds, including 75 in world championships. Cloud believes have what it takes to derail his opponent. The combination of his aggressive style and hard proven track record are compelling factors in his favor. Cloud represents a major challenge for Beterbiev, who is prepared to make his mark.

“Artur Beterbiev is an extremely special talent and we have a boundless confidence in his abilities,” GYM president Yvon Michel said. “It is unheard of for a fighter with only five fights of professional experience to headline an event at the Bell Centre against an opponent the caliber of Cloud. Quebec fans, who admired Valeri Kharlamov, Alexander Yakushev and Vladislav Tretiak, and adopted Alex Kovalev and Sergey Markov, will quickly be won over by this Alexander Ovechkin of boxing.”

In the co-feature, former world title challenger Dierry “Dougy Style” Jean (26-1-0, 18 KOs) will defend his NABF lightweight title against Mexican invader Daniel “Cañerito” Ruiz (32-7- 2, 22 KOs).

GYM, InterBox and EOTTM will present an 8-fight card on Sept. 27. Also fighting are two world welterweight contenders from Quebec and Montreal, respectively, Kevin Bizier (21-1-0, 14 KOs) and Antonin Decarie (30-2-0, 9 KOs) in separate bouts. Three promising prospects Junior Ulysses (3-0-0, 3 KOs), Steven Butler (4-0-0, 3 KOs) and Eric Bazinian (5-0- 0 3 KOs) – are also scheduled to be in action on the undercard.

Tickets go on sale this Saturday morning (Aug. 30) at 10:00 a.m. ET and will be available to purchase at Bell Centre, online at www.evenko.ca, or by calling GYM (514 383-0666) and the club Boxing Champion (514 376-0980). Ticket prices range from $50 in the red to $250 on the floor.

MARCOS MAIDANA MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT & MP3

Marcos Maidana
Kelly Swanson
Thanks, everybody, for calling in today. This is awfully exciting. We’re just weeks away from “MAYHEM: Mayweather vs. Maidana 2” and we’re very fortunate to be joined today on this conference call by Marcos Maidana along with his trainer, Robert Garcia. We also have on the line, Eric Gomez, senior vice president of Golden Boy Promotions and Leonard Ellerbe, chief executive officer of Mayweather Promotions. I’m going to turn it over right over to Leonard to make the introductions and get this call started.

Leonard Ellerbe
Hello, everyone. Thanks for joining us on the call today. We have Marcos Maidana who will be fighting Floyd in the main event. We have a tremendous undercard, which will open up with Alfredo Angulo taking on James De La Rosa. The next bout we’ll have Miguel Vasquez who will be fighting Mickey Bey for the IBF lightweight title. Then in the co-main event we’ll have Leo Santa Cruz who’ll be defending his super bantamweight title again Manuel Roman, and then obviously in the main event it’ll be none other than Floyd and Maidana.

This fight is the rematch. The first fight, as we all know, was a tremendous fight. I think Marcos came into the fight and he proved to many fans and media across the world that he was a force to be reckoned with. During the fight I think that he proved himself and that many people thought that he had won the fight, so he has the opportunity in two weeks to prove that the first fight was no joke.

So he’ll be coming into this fight better prepared. He and his trainer, they have an excellent strategy coming into this fight from what I’m hearing. He’s coming into this fight with a tremendous amount of confidence because in his mind he believes that he broke the “May-vinci code,” and what an interesting situation we have that’s developing in front of us.

This fight will be promoted by Mayweather Promotions along with Golden Boy Promotions. Our sponsors are O’Reilly Auto Parts, Corona Extra and “The Equalizer.” We still have a few tickets left at the $600 price. This event also will be shown in over 500 movie theaters across the country through Fathom Events.

So without further ado, I’d like to turn it over to our co-promoter, none other than senior VP of Golden Boy Promotions, Eric Gomez.

Eric Gomez
Great. Thank you very much, Leonard-happy to be on the call for this fight, and this is a great opportunity obviously for Marcos Maidana. He’s ready for the fight. He’s training hard, and we feel that Robert Garcia is going to have a great game plan this time around so he can finally get over that hump and beat Mayweather.

This is going to be the fight of his life. So to talk a little bit about training camp and how things are going, I want to introduce to you the trainer for Marcos Maidana, Robert Garcia, to say a few words.

Robert Garcia
Thank you, Eric. Well, training camp is going great. We’ve been training hard, sparring well. We have great sparring partners, and everybody’s doing a great job. Everybody in the gym, the whole team-not only myself and Maidana, but everybody that makes Team Maidana-everybody’s doing their job, and so far everything’s great.

We’ve had a full training camp this time around. We’re not short on sparring rounds. I’m not short on legwork. I’m not short on anything. We had our full eight weeks of training camp, so training camp is better than ever-I think the best training camp I’ve had with Chino since he got to me.

E. Gomez
Great. Thank you very much, Robert. Thank you. Also, to introduce to you to say a few words and talk about how things are going is Marcos Maidana himself.

Marcos Maidana
Good afternoon to everybody. I’m training hard and I’m ready for September 13th.

Q
Do you agree or disagree that the only way to beat Mayweather is probably by knockout?

M. Maidana
No. I don’t agree with that statement. I think that I can win by decision or by knockout. The first fight was a very close fight. It was a decision that was a majority decision, so I feel that I just have to make a few adjustments, put a little more pressure on, land better punches, and yes I can win, I can win by decision. But obviously the knockout would be nice, and that’s a possibility as well.

Q
Robert, for those saying that the only way that Maidana can beat Mayweather is by knockout your answer is what, sir?

R. Garcia
Oh, definitely not. We could also win by decision. Like “Chino” just said, it would be very nice to get a knockout, but if we win the rounds the way we were doing the first half of the fight I think there’s no question that we could also win the fight by decision.

Q
Marcos, what are the one or two things that you need to do differently to make sure that you secure a victory in the rematch?

M. Maidana
The first fight I think that my attack, the pressure, was very good, but I didn’t do well with my distance control. I think I smothered a lot of my punches, I wasn’t able to really catch him with good solid shots, being able to extend my punches, and that’s one of the things that I’m working on.

Because I smothered my punches I don’t really think I ever hurt him, but this time around if I get him with good solid shots, work my distance control, I think I can hurt him.

Q
Robert, could you answer the question of what Marcos needs to do most differently to make sure he gets the win this time?

R. Garcia
Look, we are fighting the way we did the first fight with the pressure. But like Chino is saying, we need to have a little more distance, a little more control in his punches, and we are working on that. His punches are thrown a lot more accurate, straighter punches, and our sparring partners are telling us that this time around they feel the power even harder than they did the first time. So he’s actually listening and doing the job that he’s supposed to be able to make those changes.

Q
Did you have a shorter camp in preparing for the last fight? How long was the first camp compared to this one?

R. Garcia
Yeah, that is correct. We had about five weeks for the first fight, and even though Chino came in already semi in shape, it was still not the same. This time he came here nine weeks before the fight, since we started training full camp. We had a good eight weeks of training, so I think that it’s going to make a big difference. Five weeks compared to eight weeks of training makes a big difference for this type of fight, and I think with everything that he’s doing and learning new things, they’re going to see a different fight this time.

Q
Marcos, do you agree with Robert on the fact that being able to focus entirely on the camp and having a more normal length camp will benefit you for this fight?

M. Maidana
This time around, yes, that’s true. This time around I’m training to win. I know what to expect. I know Mayweather now, his style, what he brings to the table. I’m coming to win. I have more concentration, no excuses whatsoever, and adequate time.

Q
Marcos, do you think fighting in a rematch like this, back-to-back, does it benefit you or Floyd more? And Robert, if you can answer that question when Marcos is done I’d appreciate it.

M. Maidana
I think it’s an advantage for me. It might be a little bit of an advantage for him, but I think it benefits me more having a rematch with him. I’m able to correct the mistakes I made in the first fight and take advantage of his mistakes. Even though he makes very few mistakes I already know what they are, and I think I can exploit that and take advantage of them.

R. Garcia
Look, you just said Mayweather’s only done one rematch, and obviously everybody seen he easily out boxed Castillo. But it’s a big difference, Castillo’s style to Maidana’s style. Maidana is going to come in with an aggressive style that nobody, not even the best boxer can get away with, and Mayweather’s not going to get away with it.

Maidana is going to pressure, and he’s going to be the fighter that everybody wants to see. I think in this case the rematch benefits us because Mayweather can’t do much more different things. We can, and we are, and the rematch benefits us.

Q
Do you feel, Marcos, that Floyd Mayweather is giving you the rematch because you deserve it or because they can do business on the pay-per-view?

M. Maidana
I really don’t think about that. I really don’t care. My concern is winning the fight. I want to beat him this time. I’m going to do whatever it takes to beat him.

Q
Who really gave who the rematch? Did Floyd give you the rematch or were you willing to give him the rematch? How did the rematch come about?

M. Maidana
Look, I really don’t know the details how it came about. My manager, Sebastian Contursi, called me, and he just said, “hey, we got the rematch”, and I’m happy.

Q
For Marcos and Robert, do you feel that Mayweather was forced into this position because of the perception that the fight was so close and the notion that people thought you won, or do you think that he could’ve moved on without taking this rematch and without his legacy taking a hit?

M. Maidana
I think that I got the rematch because it was a close fight. It was a close fight. He probably wants to prove a point. He wants to demonstrate that he can beat me outright. It doesn’t really matter. What matters is that the rematch is happening, and I’m very happy.

R. Garcia
I truly believe that he had no other options. He was forced to give us a rematch. He was forced to fight Maidana. There were no other names out there that he could’ve fought in September that would make sense. A rematch with Maidana is the only fight that makes sense to sell pay-per-views to please the fans, and he had no other options. That’s what I think.

Q
Do you think that the referee will be a factor given that Floyd was not happy with Tony Weeks and that Bayless has more of a working familiarity with Mayweather, having officiated his big fights with De La Hoya, Mosley and Canelo? For both Marcos and Robert.

M. Maidana
Maybe. Maybe the referee is going to intervene. Maybe he’s going to be a big part of the fight. I really don’t know. I’m going to go in there and I’m going to do my job. I’m going to do what I’ve been training for, what my work is, and I’m going to go there and work. It really doesn’t matter to me.

R. Garcia
Yeah, I think that Tony did a great job in the first fight. Kenny Bayless is also a great ref. He’s done a lot of championship fights, so he’s experienced, and I have no problem with him. Nobody knew who the ref was, and Mayweather by starting to announce that Maidana is a dirty fighter, Maidana is an MMA fighter, well that was pretty much already preparing whoever the ref was going to be to see that and to have that in his mind.

Well, I don’t think there’s going to be a big difference because Kenny is a professional. He knows. He’s done a lot of fights and he has to be fair. It’s a fight between two fighters. Kenny’s a great ref, and I know he’s going to do a great job.

Q
Robert, you’re using the Powerlock gloves, correct?

R. Garcia
I’m still not very sure. I know Sebastian Contursi is still on that. I haven’t talked to him lately. I know Maidana yesterday was still asking me if we had resolved that. I told him no. So maybe that’s a question Sebastian or maybe Leonard Ellerbe could answer, but we have no problem. We don’t have a problem with the Powerlocks.

We just wanted enough time to train and not use them the day of the fight when we had never wore those gloves before. There is no problem. The Powerlock is a good glove, and we have to wear that-we are already training in it just in case, but I have no problem. I’m already training my fighter to be prepared for that.

L. Ellerbe
Yes, Marcos will be fighting in the Powerlock gloves.

Q
Robert, win or lose, if Floyd is say dominant or just if he wins, will you be able to move on without talking about the gloves?

R. Garcia
Look, when we agreed to the fight then we can’t go back and say, “oh, we should have used the gloves.” No, there’s nothing we can do. We agreed, we’re fighting in those gloves, so there’s not going to be no excuses. The fight is going to be the fight, but it does make a difference, and Mayweather’s the only fighter that can make those calls, make those decisions, and we also have to understand that that’s the way it is. That’s what business is. But no, we are not going to have any and we can’t have any excuses.

Q
For Marcos and Robert, do you feel that by the time you get to September 13th given that Floyd was willing to engage more in the first fight, that that’s a result of him slowing down a little bit as a professional, or do you think that was just because of the pressure that Marcos was able to bring to him on the first fight in May?

M. Maidana
I don’t think age has anything to do with it. I don’t think it does because in the first fight, yeah, he could’ve fought with me a little bit, but then he started boxing and moving at times. So I don’t think age has anything to do with it. He’s a good athlete. He’s in shape. I think that it was his decision to stand and fight with me. This second fight I hope he decides to stand and fight with me, to fight like a man. I hope he doesn’t start running or trying to move away.

R. Garcia
I agree with what Chino just said. Mayweather is going to be 38, but he’s taken care of his body. He’s an athlete. He’s a natural, so I don’t think age is a factor in this fight. But like Chino said, we just hope that he wants to please the crowd like he said he tried to do it the first fight, well hopefully this time he does it even better.

Let’s stand in front, let’s exchange punches, and let’s see who is the better man is. Let’s see who is the stronger man is, and we’ll show him the difference there. But I think age is not a factor in his age right there.

Q
How do you change or adapt stylistically in the second fight to maybe cut the ring off better and make sure that Mayweather is forced into more of those tight spots that favor your offensive output?

M. Maidana
Yes, you’re right. I was able to force him. I was able to force him to fight, to stand and fight. It had a lot to do with conditioning. The times when he decided to box were because I let him. I let him get away. I let him be able to box and move. I think that I did well in forcing him to fight because of the pressure I put on.

This time around I’m not going to get tired. I’m going to be on him from the opening bell for the entire fight, and I think that’s going to force him to fight.

R. Garcia
I think Chino just said what I have to say. We’re training to be able to do what we did for 12 rounds. We’re training to do that. The first fight we only had five weeks of training, so sparring wasn’t the same. We didn’t have enough rounds.

This time we’re having the full training camp, so I don’t see why we can’t do the same thing we did for the first five, six rounds for 12 rounds. I think we’re going to be able to do it for 12 rounds.

Q
Now that you know Mayweather, what can you do to benefit you in this fight that’s going to work for you in this fight?

M. Maidana
I have to keep pressuring him. When I was able to pressure him in the first fight and get him on the ropes and fight with him, make him fight, I did very, very well. Whenever he moved, that’s when I had problems with him, but this fight here I want him to stand and fight like a man.

Q
Do you think you’re going to be able to intimidate Floyd? Do you think you’re going to be able to do things to make him fight?

M. Maidana
Yes, this fight I’m not going to respect him. I’m not going to respect him. I’m going to go at him, and I want him to fight like a man. Stop crying like a little [expletive] and fight.

Q
What can you do in this second fight to make it better to make him fight you?

M. Maidana
I’m going to do my job. I’m going to come to fight. I want him to come and to fight, and to stand and fight like a man. Don’t be a little [expletive] and run around. Come and fight like a man. Stand and fight me.

Q
What are you going to do after this fight win or lose?

M. Maidana
I’m not thinking about anything else but the fight. I’m not thinking about what’s after this. I’m just thinking about this fight and winning this fight. That’s all I’m thinking about.

Q
Mayweather has made comments that the first fight he stood and fought with you toe to toe because he wanted to please the fans. Do you think that’s the case?

M. Maidana
No, I think that I forced him to fight. I didn’t let him try to box. I think that I’m the one that forced the issue. I made him fight me, and that’s the reason he fought that way.

Q
How is training going? How is the sparring going for you?

M. Maidana
It’s been great. I’ve been sparring with Mikey Garcia, Thomas Dulorme, Stevie Forbes, and I’m very, very content with the work they’ve given me and the work I’ve done in the gym.

Q
Marcos, at any time have you dreamt or had a dream about knocking out Floyd?

M. Maidana
No, I haven’t had the pleasure of having such a nice dream.

Q
Your manager and cousin, Sebastian Contursi, they say that you’re going to knock him out within nine rounds. What do you think of that?

M. Maidana
I’m going to try. It’s very difficult to knock out Floyd because he runs, but I’m going to do my best, and we’ll see what happens.

Q
How do you feel about Floyd saying that you’re a dirty fighter?

M. Maidana
You know what? It doesn’t bother me. It doesn’t bother me. There’s things that he does as well in there, so it’s time for him to stop crying and just fight.

Q
Marcos, I’m curious how close do you really think you would’ve came to retiring if you didn’t get a fight with Floyd, and if you don’t win this rematch can you see a scenario where you would actually retire?

M. Maidana
Yeah, that’s true. I haven’t really thought about past this fight, but that is true. I did make those comments, and I was really contemplating retiring if he didn’t give me the rematch, and I would’ve retired for the rest of this year at least and then see what comes up next year. But, yes, it was something that crossed my mind, and I was willing to retire.

Q
How do you see yourself winning the fight if he runs away from you more and if he tries to stay away and just simply box? Can you see yourself winning the fight if he just completely tries to stay away through the whole fight?

M. Maidana
Look, I’m preparing for anything. I hope that he stands and fights. But if he’s going to run like a little [expletive] I’m going to have to chase him all around, and I’m prepared to do that.

Q
How do you expect Mayweather to change for this fight, and how will you counter whatever change he makes?

M. Maidana
Yeah, I’m sure that for this second fight he can come out and fight differently, have a different game plan. I’m not going to change. I’m going to come, and I’m going to put the pressure on, and I’m going to try to force him to fight. I’m hoping again that he doesn’t start running like a little [expletive] all over the ring.

Q
How would you counter a lot of the moves that he does, the shoulder roll? Even when you cut off the ring and he gets in the corner he’s able to make his opponents miss. How do you plan to counter those types of situations?

M. Maidana
The way to counter that, his defensive moves with the shoulder roll and the arms and all that, I’m going to hit him there. I’m going to hit him in the shoulder. I’m going to hit him in the arms, and come eighth, ninth round he’s going to be so tired from all the punches that he’s not going to be able to defend himself anymore.

K. Swanson
Okay Leonard, if you want to make a closing comment and Eric, Maidana, and Robert too-anybody who’d like to say one last thing before we wrap it up.

L. Ellerbe
We’d like to thank everyone for joining us on the call today. Just want to remind everyone that Floyd has his media day next Tuesday, and his conference call on Wednesday. I think we all heard from Maidana that he’s coming into this fight with a tremendous amount of confidence for obvious reasons, and the question I guess we’ll ask ourselves is will he be able to keep the pressure on Floyd like he did in the first fight because as we all know pressure busts pipes; or will Floyd be able to pick it up like he did in the second half of the fight and possibly stop Maidana as he’s never been stopped before.

E. Gomez
Great. I’ll just say a few words. This is shaping up to be a great rematch. Obviously I think that Maidana is going to bring it. He’s got anger. He’s got desire. He’s got everything. This is do or die for Maidana. He’s going to come and bring it. Like he said many times on the call, he hopes that Floyd stands and fights.

Floyd has a lot of pride. He’s a great champion. I think that he’s going to hear him loud and clear, and he’s going to come to the fight as well. So I think it’s going to make for a great fight, so don’t miss it.

MEXICAN BOXING LEGENDS TALK MARCOS MAIDANA

julio-cesar-chavez
LAS VEGAS (Aug. 28, 2014) – Aggressive, determined and fearless. Proud Argentine and former welterweight champion Marcos “El Chino” Maidana has won the respect of some of the greatest Mexican world champions of our time for the fiery intensity he brings each time he steps through the ropes.

The fact that Maidana is the only boxer to defeat Adrien Broner and one of the very few in history to give 11-Time World Champion and perennial No. 1 pound-for-pound superstar, Floyd “Money” Mayweather, a legitimate test only adds to the anticipation heading into their upcoming rematch.

Here’s what the Mexican champions have to say about Maidana as we inch closer to “MAYHEM: Mayweather vs. Maidana 2” on Saturday, Sept. 13 live on SHOWTIME PPV® from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

JULIO CESAR CHAVEZ, three-division World Champion and Boxing Hall of Famer
“We all know Marcos Maidana is not a technical fighter, but nobody can deny he is a very dangerous one, perhaps one of the most dangerous fighters Mayweather has ever faced.

“I must confess I was amazed to see how courageous Maidana was; he squared up in front of Mayweather and just went at it with everything he had.

“Maidana possesses a singular characteristic that we usually see only in Mexican fighters – he is simply fearless. He is brave and powerful and from the moment he steps into the ring he fights like there’s no tomorrow.”

ERIK “EL TERRIBLE” MORALES, first Mexican-born boxer to capture World titles in four different weight classes

“When you think of what makes a great Mexican Champion, you think of determination, aggressiveness, heart and the guts to get the job done. That’s what it means to be a great Mexican warrior; you leave everything in the ring, your heart and soul are out there.

“I remember watching the first Mayweather vs. Maidana fight back in May and I can say, Maidana left his heart in the ring. He fights with passion and aggressiveness. He leaves it all out there.

“There’s no boxing in Las Vegas or anywhere without great Mexican fighters. We all know that. And Maidana has the heart of a Mexican warrior.”

ISRAEL “MAGNIFICO” VAZQUEZ, former super bantamweight World Champion
“Marcos Maidana’s boxing style resembles that of the great Mexican fighters. He is fearless, doesn’t stand down, he likes to pressure his opponent and has a very powerful punch.

“You have to give Maidana some credit for his boxing skills; he has won the lead role in a rematch fight against one of the best fighters in the world, Floyd Mayweather.

“Besides being a very good fighter, Marcos has a very nice characteristic, he’s truly humble. That’s a feature you don’t find that often in boxers of his caliber.

“This is a very tough fight for the both of them; that’s why I’ll refrain from any predictions. Both fighters have a big test in front of them.

RAUL “DIAMANTE” MARQUEZ, Former IBF 154-Pound World Champion
“Maidana is a fighter that takes the lead and doesn’t back up. He comes prepared and he comes to fight.

“Nobody thought that he was going to stand up to Mayweather like he did. He left his heart in the ring.

“He made all Latinos proud. He stood in front of Mayweather like true Mexican champions do.

“He can go the distance if he wants, he’s aggressive. He fights with the determination of a Mexican.”

Fight Network Presents ONE FC 19: Reign of Champions LIVE Friday, Aug. 29, from Dubai

Toronto – Fight Network, the world’s premier 24/7 television channel dedicated to complete coverage of combat sports, presents a live broadcast of ONE Fighting Championship 19: Reign of Champions featuring a trio of highly anticipated championship clashes this Friday, August 29, at 10 a.m. ET.

Fight Network’s live broadcast will air exclusively in Canada and Turkey.

Emanating from Dubai’s World Trade Centre, ONE FC 19: Reign of Champions is set to be the biggest combat sports event to ever be held in the Middle East.

In the featured title bout, ONE FC lightweight champion Shinya Aoki will make the first defense of his belt since winning it in April 2013, as he takes on UFC veteran Kamal Shalorus of Iran.

Plus, ONE FC welterweight champion Nobutatsu Suzuki will meet undefeated wrestling superstar and former Bellator champion Ben Askren.

In the third championship tilt, ONE FC featherweight champion Koji Oishi meets Mongolian striking expert Jadamba Narantungalag. Oishi was originally scheduled to face Eric Kelly, but he wasn’t medically cleared to accept the bout after his most recent win. Meanwhile, Oishi is fresh off a victory over former ONE FC titleholder Honorio Banario last May.

Mixed martial arts superstar Roger Huerta will also return to action to take on the undefeated Christian Holley, plus former WBO and IBA female boxing champion Ana Julaton will take on Malaysian prospect Ann Osman.

In other featured bouts, top featherweights Herbert Burns and Hiroshige Tanaka will throw down, while James McSweeney will drop a division to light heavyweight to take on Cristiano Kaminishi.

“After wowing sold out audiences across Asia, Asia’s largest mixed martial arts organization will enter the Middle East for the first time on August 29th,” said Victor Cui, CEO of ONE Fighting Championship. “Dubai will be treated to a night of adrenaline-pumping mixed martial arts action from world-class mixed martial artists. Nobutatsu Suzuki, Koji Oishi and Shinya Aoki are three of the greatest mixed martial artists in the world today and they will put their ONE FC World Championship titles on the line! Ben Askren is the greatest wrestler to compete in mixed martial arts and his clash with Suzuki is one of the most anticipated bouts in the history of the welterweight division. This is going to be the biggest night in the history of combat sports and you do not want to miss it!”

Nobutatsu Suzuki is a striker who has demonstrated the effectiveness of karate in mixed martial arts. He became the first ONE FC welterweight champion by defeating Brock Larson at ONE FC: War of Nations earlier this year. Ten of his 11 wins have been knockouts and he will look to add Ben Askren to the list of opponents he has finished when they clash on Aug. 29.

Ben Askren is a legend in collegiate wrestling with four All-American awards. He finished his wrestling career at the University of Missouri with a record of 153-8. He has won 91 of those bouts with pins, one of the most in NCAA Division I history. He also wrestled on the US Olympics team in 2008 before transitioning to mixed martial arts. Since his mixed martial arts debut in 2009, he has won 13 bouts consecutively in dominating fashion, winning multiple championships and earning recognition as one of the best welterweights in the world.

Shinya Aoki is known as one of the most dangerous submission artists in mixed martial arts today. A former DREAM lightweight champion, he earned his most prestigious title with a quick submission victory over then ONE FC lightweight champion, Kotetsu Boku, at ONE FC: Kings & Champions last year. He is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under the legendary Yuki Nakai, and boasts 23 wins via submission.

Kamal ‘Prince Of Persia’ Shalorus is a former national wrestler who transitioned to mixed martial arts after mixed martial artists began to seek him out for his wrestling expertise. Despite beginning his career as a wrestler, Shalorus has four knockout victories which showcase the power he possesses. He has won both his bouts impressively since debuting in Asia’s largest mixed martial arts organization, and has earned the biggest opportunity in his life as he takes on grappling legend Aoki.

ONE FC featherweight champion Koji Oishi is a veteran of over 40 fights and a former Lightweight King of Pancrase. He is a seasoned veteran who has been consistently facing the best opposition in the world. At ONE FC: Rise to Power, his lifelong dream of becoming a world champion came true when he captured the ONE FC featherweight championship by knocking out Honorio Banario. Oishi has fought almost 100 rounds in his career and faced over 36 opponents, making him one of the most experienced featherweights in the world.

Jadamba Narantungalag is the top mixed martial artist to emerge from Mongolia. He boasts an impressive record of nine wins and three losses against top competition in Asia. He also has kickboxing experience, facing the likes of renowned kickboxing champions Buakaw Banchamek and Masato. Narantungalag made an impressive ONE FC debut by defeating former ONE FC featherweight champion Honorio Banario at ONE FC: Honor & Glory. He now gets the biggest opportunity in his career when he takes on current ONE FC featherweight champion Koji Oishi.

Roger Huerta is a renowned mixed martial arts superstar and one of the most recognizable faces in the sport. He began his career impressively by winning 20 of his first 23 bouts, before moving on to star in several movies. Huerta is determined to return to mixed martial arts action with a bang, but will face a stern test in the undefeated up-and-comer, Christian Holley.

Christian Holley is an undefeated mixed martial artist. Originally from England, he spent most of his life in Spain having moved there when he was five years old. He has finished eight of the 10 opponents he has faced thus far, all in impressive fashion. Having reached the pinnacle of the sport in Europe, Holley has set his sights on conquering the lightweight division in ONE FC and he gets the opportunity when he faces the biggest test of his career so far in Roger Huerta.

Ana “The Hurricane” Julaton is the first Filipina boxer to win the women’s WBO super bantamweight and IBA super bantamweight championships. Julaton’s signing with ONE FC marks her first step to becoming a two-sport athlete. Her overpowering attacks in the ring earned her the nickname “The Hurricane” and made her a fan favorite in the Philippines. It took her only seven professional bouts to win a championship in boxing and she hopes her mixed martial arts career will be equally successful. She made a successful ONE FC debut by defeating Aya Saber and will return to the ONE FC cage looking for the second win in her mixed martial arts career.

Ann Osman is the first female Malaysian mixed martial artist to compete in a major mixed martial arts organization. Osman possesses wrestling skills and powerful ground and pound, making her a tough test for any opponent. She made her debut in an empathic battle last October, and has been eagerly awaiting an opportunity to get back into the ONE FC cage.

James McSweeney is a top English mixed martial artist and kickboxer who have competed against some of the best mixed martial artists in the world, racking up numerous titles in the process. He is currently on the best streak of his career, with nine wins in his last 12 fights. McSweeney is a proven finisher and have gone to a decision only once in 24 fights.

Cristiano Kaminishi has gone 8-1 while competing predominantly in Japan and will be making his debut for Asia’s largest mixed martial arts organization on 29 August. Kaminishi is a former Heat heavyweight champion and has also won multiple Brazilian jiu-jitsu titles across multiple weight divisions. Originally from Brazil, he made the move to Japan at the age of 17. Kaminishi is a BJJ black belt under Taka Watanabe of Axis Jiu-Jitsu, one of the pioneering academies in Japan. Kaminishi has spent years training with some of the best fighters in the world, including Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, and has also cornered luminaries such as Nogueira, Paulo Filho and Mario Sperry.

Herbert Burns is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt who represents Evolve MMA in Singapore. Originally from Brazil, he made a successful ONE FC debut by submitting Edward Kelly last December, and followed that up with a unanimous decision victory over former Harris Sarmiento earlier this year. An impressive victory over Tanaka will extend his undefeated record to four and push him to the forefront of potential contenders for the ONE FC featherweight title.

Hiroshige Tanaka is one of the best featherweights from Japan. He is riding a seven-fight winning streak and has defeated some of the top featherweights in the region. Tanaka is a deadly striker who possesses knockout power in both hands. Tanaka will make his ONE FC debut against one of the best grapplers in the division and it will be interesting to see how this classic matchup between striker and grappler plays out.

Dusty Hernandez-Harrison to Face Hector Munoz for WBC Continental Americas Championship on Saturday, September 27

Washington, D.C. (August 28, 2014)- It has been over a year since Southeast Washington, D.C. Welterweight prospect, Dusty Hernandez-Harrison, has fought in front of his hometown fans in the Nation’s Capital. His long-awaited return will come on Saturday, September 27, when promoter All In Entertainment presents “Hometown Takeover” at DAR Constitution Hall. Hernandez-Harrison will be headlining the show against Hector Munoz of Albuquerque, NM in a 10-round Welterweight matchup for the WBC Continental Americas Championship.

Hernandez-Harrison (23-0, 12KO’s), the current WBC Youth Welterweight Champion, fought almost exclusively in Washington, D.C. to start his career. Following a stellar performance in his hometown in May 2013, Dusty spent the last 15 months strategically honing his craft on the road against all levels of opposition and in various venues throughout the United States. The 20 year old WBC Youth Welterweight Champion relishes the opportunity to once again display his skills in front of his hometown fans.

“Knowing that I will be fighting in my hometown for another belt has really given me extra motivation in training camp,” Hernandez-Harrison said. “I know Jeff had a detailed plan for me to see as many different looks as possible in and out of the ring and it worked. But it feels great to be fighting at home again,” Dusty added. “I would like to thank the WBC for giving me the opportunity to fight for a Championship in Washington, D.C.”

“I am so happy that my son will be fighting for a title in his hometown,” Buddy Harrison, Hernandez-Harrison’s father and trainer, said. “This is like a dream come true, which I said before in November when Dusty won the Youth Title at Madison Square Garden. Both are dreams come true.”

Hector Munoz (23-13-1, 15KOs), a former WBC USNBC Champion, is a seasoned veteran who faced some of the very best fighters in the Welterweight and Super Welterweight divisions. This fight has a personal element for Munoz as Hernandez-Harrison defeated his stable mate, Josh Torres, in 2013 at Madison Square Garden to win the WBC Youth Welterweight Championship.

“We are in the gym every day and we will be ready for a war,” said Munoz, who has 15 knockouts in his 23 victories. “I hope he doesn’t run all night; let’s give the fans what they want. Josh has shared his first hand view of the kid’s strengths and weaknesses, and I plan to expose those weakness in a big way,” added Munoz.

“Dusty comes back to Washington, D.C. following an eight bout National tour that had him on both coasts and many cities in between. That ring education and development and Dusty’s work ethic and training regimen, have prepared him for this Championship Bout in front of his hometown fans,” Fried explained.

All In Entertainment is proud to promote the top Welterweight prospect in the Country as the main event at Hometown Takeover. The event will also honor the number one AAU basketball program in the Country, Team Takeover. “Dusty is the best young Welterweight in the World and Keith Stevens is the Chief Executive of Team Takeover. Both deserve tremendous credit for their unwavering commitment to excellence,” added Fried.

“Some of my friends went through the Team Takeover program and now are fulfilling their dreams in the NBA, My “NBA” is winning a World Championship and I will continue to work hard to reach that goal,” said Dusty.

The evening includes a special performance by Lightshow, a popular Southeast D.C. rapper who has been recognized by national magazines such as Complex, XXL and The Source. Lightshow has also recently performed on the Music Matters stage at the BET Experience and the Trillectro Music Festival.

He won his first 17 bouts with big wins over Juan Garcia Martin (12-1) and a shocking 1st round stoppage over previously undefeated and heavy favorite Bernard Dunne (24-0) in Dunne’s hometown of Dublin, Ireland to win the European Super Bantamweight title.

After dropping the belt to Rendall Munroe in England, Martinez won three in a row before losing to Munroe in the rematch and losing future world champion Takalani Ndlovu in South Africa. Martinez went on to win seven in a row which included recapturing the European Super Bantamweight title with a decision over Arsen Martirosyan (16-3). He made two defenses over Jason Booth (36-6) and the rematch with Martirosyan (18-4) before the fight with Frampton.

Martinez has won four in a row which was highlighted by him winning the IBF world championship with a 6th round stoppage over Jhonathan Romero (23-0) on August 17 in Atlantic City. Martinez has made two defenses with a 9th round stoppage over former champion Jeffrey Mathebula (27-4-2) and his last bout when he went to Japan and stopped longtime Bantamweight king Hozumi Hasegawa in 7 rounds on April 23.

Frampton (20-0, 13 KO’s) of Belfast has won all of the regional titles that the United Kingdom and Europe has to offer and now is eagerly awaiting his 1st world title opportunity.

He captured the Celtic Super Bantamweight title, Commonwealth Super Bantamweight title and defended it against Kris Hughes (15-1) & Prosper Ankrah (18-2). He won the IBF Intercontinental title with a 12-round unanimous decision over Raul Hirales (16-0-1). He defended both that title and the Commonwealth title with an explosive 6th round stoppage over former world champion Steve Molitor.

After defeating Martinez, Frampton stopped Jeremy Parodi (35-1-1) in six and his lat bout he destroyed former world champion Hugo Cazares (40-7-2) in two rounds on April 4.

For the second consecutive year, Baltimore Boxing Promotions is honoring the late Murray Smith, father of Jake. During the evening, Baltimore Boxing will present the “School of Hard Knocks” Award in Murray’s honor. The 2014 recipient will be to former world champion and Baltimore native Vincent Pettway.

All VIP ticketholders can enjoy free hors d’oeurves by Midtown BBQ from 7-8:15.

In the main event of the evening, heralded prospect Jerome Featherstone Jr. challenges tough Francisco Bustos of Washington, DC for the East Coast title. The naturally gifted Featherstone Jr. became a Golden Gloves titlist in one of the nation’s toughest regions less than a year after first putting on a pair of gloves and plans to turn pro later this year. The two were scheduled to meet last year but the fight fell out at the last minute.

Popular Joey “Bazooka Joe” Veazey of Baltimore challenges Keayen Coleman for the Maryland State Welterweight Championship in the semi-main event of the evening. Veazy captured a silver medal at the 2014 National Junior Golden Gloves, won various tournaments and has a large fan base that follows him closely.

Locals Donald Wallace and Meach Al Tashy will appear in separate undercard bouts, while Justin Knight meets Allen Burris for the Maryland State junior middleweight crown. More fights will be added shortly.

“I’m very pleased that Vincent Pettway is accepting the second annual Murray B Smith School of Hard Knocks award,” said Jake Smith, a former pro fighter turned Maryland and Washington DC Hall of Fame promoter. “We’ve got some of the best talent in the DMV area on this card and this is Jerome’s final match before going pro. Joey Veazy continues to bring a huge crowd with him and the undercard will be great as well. The turnout for our last few cards has been excellent and I believe the community will come out strong September 20.”

Doors for “Wiggle, Wiggle, Wiggle” open at 6:30 pm and the opening bell will sound at 8:15. All bouts are scheduled by USA Boxing. There will also be a special 50/50 raffle during the evening. All proceeds are going towards the Baltimore Boxing amateur program, a non-profit which rescued many local youths from the tough Charm City streets and helped develop them into boxers.

TRAINING CAMP QUOTES FOR THIS SATURDAY’S MAYWEATHER PROMOTIONS SHOBOX: THE NEW GENERATION TRIPLEHEADER

jleon-love
LAS VEGAS (Aug. 27, 2014) – Undefeated super middleweight contender J’Leon Love is just a few months removed from the toughest fight of his career, but the Floyd Mayweather protégé doesn’t expect things to get any easier this Saturday when he steps into the ring with hard-hitting veteran Rogelio Medina.

Love (18-0, 10 KOs) and Medina (32-6, 26 KOs) will square off in the 10-round main event of a special Saturday presentation of ShoBox: The New Generation, LIVE on SHOWTIME® immediately following the premiere of ALL ACCESS: Mayweather vs. Maidana 2 Episode 1 at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT.

Tickets for the Mayweather Promotions “Desert Showdown” from The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas are priced at $25, $50, $75 and $100, plus applicable taxes, fees and service are on sale and available for purchase by clicking HERE.

Love picked himself off the canvas this past May 3 to register a hard-fought victory over former world title challenger Marco Antonio Periban. But while Love is looking to make another step toward becoming the 56th ShoBox alum to graduate to a world title, Medina is aiming for redemption in his return to the series after getting knocked out by Love’s stablemate and sparring partner, Badou Jack, last December.

In the co-feature, once-beaten super middleweight contender Badou “The Ripper” Jack (16-1-1, 11 KOs) will look to bounce back from the first loss of his career when he takes on Jason Escalera (15-2-1, 12 KOs), who has never been knocked down and has not lost a fight contested at 168 pounds. Jack vs. Escalera will be a 10-round super middleweight bout.

In the opening bout of the telecast, undefeated yet untested super middleweight prospect Ronald “Thrill” Gavril (9-0, 7 KOs) will square off Thomas Falowo (12-2, 8 KOs), who spent the past month as a sparring partner for Sakio Bika, in an eight-round super middleweight contest.

Here’s what the fighters had to say as they prepare for Saturday’s showdowns:

J’LEON LOVE:
“My last fight was definitely a learning experience. Periban was a title contender and a very experienced fighter. I faced some adversity and I was able to bounce back and come through with a win.

“Every fight is a learning experience, but this one was under the big lights. It shows I have the heart and determination to win. I know where I want to go with this and I know a world championship is on the horizon. I think I have maybe two more fights before I fight for a belt.

“I’m still growing as a fighter, but I’ve graduated from prospect to contender and I’m just a few wins away from graduating to world champion. Saturday night is just another step. I think I’m almost there.

“Being in shape is the No. 1 key, following the game plan is next. Just staying focused is what gets you the victory. I have a great team around me that won’t let me slack off or fall victim to cutting it short in the gym.

“Badou isn’t just a training partner; he’s like a brother to me. He told me I can’t take Medina lightly, he told me to be careful because this guy can put you down. He’s tough, he’s going to bring it and I have to stay sharp.

“We always want to work on our defense. The guy has a lot of power but your hands can’t hit what your eyes can’t see. I have great movement and defense and we need to apply that to the game plan. I can’t let him get off. I need to take control and do what I have to do to get the victory.

“I step in the ring to make a statement every time I fight. This is just continuing the pace of what we’ve been doing. Just get that W and move to the next opponent.

“I grew up watching the world champions today fight on SHOWTIME and here I am headlining a card in Vegas. It’s an honor and a blessing. This is to show we are the next generation of fighters that the world is going to see. We’re here to make a statement.”

ROGELIO MEDINA:
“I’ve been traveling to my opponents’ turf for my last few fights, but I don’t really care about that too much. It’s just the two fighters in the ring. There aren’t that many fighters in my weight division in Mexico so that’s why I have to fight on the road for the good opportunities.

“I actually didn’t know that Jack and Love were sparring partners until recently, but every fight is different so I’m looking at this as another big opportunity for me. If my opponent feels that just because I lost to Jack then he will have an easy night, then he’s in for a surprise.

“My trainer and I have been watching a few of Love’s fights and have been working on some things in the gym that we can take advantage of. I think Love was actually given too much time to recover from the knockdown against Periban. I know that he can be hurt and when I hurt him I plan to be more aggressive than Periban was. I need to take advantage of that.

“I definitely need a win to get back on track. I don’t think about getting a knockout or a decision, I just think I need a win and will be ready for it however it comes.

“In my last fight I went up against the local favorite, Jonathan Gonzalez. My team, the TV commentators, the fans in the stadium, they all thought I should have won the fight but they gave it to him by split decision. At first I was upset, but I know I gave it my all and put on a good fight. I think I won and now I’m just focused on my next fight.”

BADOU JACK
“My last fight was the most disappointing minute of my life. It wasn’t really a lucky punch, so I’m not making excuses, but he’s not on my level and I wasn’t supposed to lose. I threw a lazy jab and got caught, so it was my fault. He was lucky he landed it because I was just stupid.

“I’ve been in the gym for five months, focusing on not throwing lazy jabs and working on my range. I’ve been sparring with both J’Leon and Ronald, but mostly Ronald. They all look good, everyone is in top shape and we’re ready.

“This guy (Escalera) is tough and coming to fight so I’m going to be 100 percent ready for him.

“I thought I would get an immediate rematch against (Derek) Edwards, but I guess he pulled out.

“I just need to keep winning. Things happen and life goes on. Right now, I need to beat this guy and we’ll be right back in contention for an eliminator or a world title shot after maybe one or two more fights.

“I want a rematch, I want to avenge my loss. I’ll do anything to get that fight made just for my pride. Other than my pride, that guy was nothing special. I want to be a world champion one day so I know I have to fight the best out there.

“I told J, don’t sleep on Medina. He can punch and he’s very tough. He’s not the most skillful fighter, but he has 26 knockouts. He can punch hard and he definitely throws a lot of them. I told him to just be smart in there.”

JASON ESCALERA
“Badou Jack was dropped in his last fight and I think that can be repeated if he makes the same mistake. The KO can be repeated again.

“I’m undefeated at 168 pounds. This is the weight for me, for my future. I’m like a whole different person fighting at super middleweight. I feel good and strong there.

“Training camp is going well. I’m getting great work with amateurs and pros, quick people, people who move around and don’t stay right in front of me. I like to spar with people who stay toe-to-toe with me. We know Badou likes to throw straight punches, so I’m working on perfecting my bob and weave

“It’s a great style matchup. I fight better when my opponents are brawlers. I like guys that come forward, confront me and fight. I’m not the type to run after fighters. We’re here to fight and that’s what we’ll do on Saturday.

“I think I can win a brawl. People like to see a brawl; people like to see actual fighting and not two guys running away from each other.

“If he makes a mistake again he will get dropped with the same punch. I feel sharp, I feel good, I’m ready to rumble.”

RONALD GAVRIL
“We’ve been sparring with all the Mayweather guys here at the gym for about eight weeks. It’s been a good camp, solid work. I’ve been sparring with J’Leon and Badou.

“We’ve been working on a few things, trying to work on my jab.

“This should be a good matchup for me. They tell me this guy likes to stand there and trade and that’s what we’ll give him.”

THOMAS FALOWO:
“Sparring with Sakio Bika was a great experience. He can definitely crack. That was definitely some grade-A work right there.

“This is a good matchup for me. I like the fact that he seems to come forward. I definitely think it’s going to make for a fan-friendly fight.

“I’m just very grateful for this opportunity. The timing couldn’t be better – I’ve been feeling like I’m at my peak right now. Between the training camp and how much I’ve improved over the past couple of months and the past couple of fights, I’m ready.

“I understand that I’m going into this fight as the underdog, but by no means am I an opponent. I’m going in there and I’m coming out with that win. I’m ready to go.”
