Wilson, 32, is from the fighting city of Philadelphia, PA. He made his Fight Night debut on a special afternoon edition of NBC Fight Night on November 16, 2013 at Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Verona, NY against Vyacheslav “Czar” Glazkov. Wilson was a last minute replacement for Tomasz “Goral” Adamek who fell ill days before the fight. Wilson took the fight on less than 48 hours’ notice and agreed to fight at heavyweight despite being a cruiserweight. He ultimately lost to Glazkov via a ten-round unanimous decision but he gained the respect of the boxing community for stepping up at the last minute and taking such a big fight on national broadcast television.

“The Rock” and “The Ultimate Warrior” were scheduled to face each other in January of this year but Wilson pulled out due to an injured Achilles tendon. SHAWN PORTER, KELL BROOK AND UNDERCARD FIGHTERS TALK ABOUT THEIR TRAINING CAMP DAYS AWAY FROM THEIR BIG NIGHT

kell-brook
CARSON, Calif. (Aug. 11, 20141) – With less than a week away to fight night, Shawn Porter, Kell Brook and undercard fighters talk about their training camp experiences and expectations surrounding their big fights this Saturday, Aug. 16 at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. live on SHOWTIME®.

In the main event, undefeated IBF Welterweight World Champion “Showtime” Shawn Porter will defend his title against fellow unbeaten British sensation Kell Brook in a 12-round bout. In the co-feature, Sakio “The Scorpion” Bika seeks to retain his WBC Super Middleweight Championship when he faces Anthony “The Dog” Dirrell in a highly anticipated 12-round rematch of their Dec. 2013 split draw. In the opening fight of the telecast, Omar “Panterita” Figueroa Jr. will put his WBC Lightweight World Title on the line when he faces mandatory challenger WBC Silver Lightweight Champion Daniel “Tremendo” Estrada in a 12-round bout.

Fight week has arrived, and as the Aug. 16 fighters wrap up camp, they answer a series of training camp related questions that offer some insight into their final preparations for this Saturday’s bouts.

Q: You’re essentially done with training camp at this point, how did everything go?

A: Shawn Porter (training in Las Vegas) – “Yep, it’s all over as of last week. We just finished, and my dad was very happy with how everything went. We did 15 rounds of sparring to close things out.”

Kell Brook (finalizing his training in Las Vegas)- “We got some great work done. We’re winding everything down, and I’m feeling fresh for fight night.”

Sakio Bika (training in St. Louis) – “Everything has gone smoothly. My team and I have been working very hard and they have been very supportive. The weather has been great, and I haven’t had any injuries. So everything has gone well.”

Anthony Dirrell (training in Detroit) – “It’s going well. It’s just hard work. We’ve been working to make it harder than last camp so that I can keep getting better.”

Omar Figueroa Jr. (training in Weslaco, Texas) – “Everything is going well. This is one of the best camps we’ve had. We’re excited for a great fight.”

Daniel Estrada (training in Mexico City, Mexico) – “I have been working very hard for the past five weeks. I’ve been running around 4:00 a.m. in the high altitude of Mexico along with my team that includes Juan Manuel Marquez, Ignacio ‘Nacho’ Beristain and Raul de Anda, and to know I am receiving the advice of one of the greats in the sport [Marquez] gives me the peace of mind that I am doing the right thing for this upcoming fight.”

Deontay Wilder (training in Tuscaloosa, Ala.) – “Everything has been going as planned. This has probably been one of the shortest training camps I’ve had. That thrills me though. A lot of fighters claim to be athletes, but on the night of the fight I’ll show exactly how athletic and ready I am. I’ve been missing the ring and I’m ready to get back.”

Jorge Linares (training in Las Vegas) – “I’m very happy not only because I have a fight coming up, but also because I’m at home once again. I’ve been training with Ismael Salas for two years now and I feel like I’m at home here, so everything is going great.”

Q: We’re less than a week from fight night. How are you feeling physically?

A: Shawn Porter – “I’m in the best shape of my life, but I always try to stay prepared.”

Kell Brook – “Mentally strong, and physically ready.”

Sakio Bika – “I’m feeling very good, I’m ready to defend my belt. Everything has been great in St. Louis.”

Anthony Dirrell – “Great, if I’m not ready by now then I’m not ready. I feel ready to go.”

Omar Figueroa Jr. – “I honestly feel like I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been in. I only took a week and a half off after my last fight. So I’ve been super active ever since I started training for my last fight.”

Deontay Wilder – “I’m good to go. I’m always in shape. I’m always in the gym. I treat boxing like my nine to five. Others may not take it seriously, but this is a sport where you can get hurt if you don’t protect yourself and take it seriously. So I’m always tuned up and ready to go for my fans.”

Jorge Linares – “[Fight night] It’s basically here, so I’m excited and feeling well. I’ll be on weight and ready to fight.”

Q: Has your game plan stayed consistent, or has it evolved since you started camp?

A: Shawn Porter – “It stayed consistent. We always train hard.”

Kell Brook – “It’s always been the same. We’ve been training 100 percent the whole way through.”

Sakio Bika – “Kevin (Cunningham) and I always do the same thing. He keeps me positive, focused and working very hard to get ready for Aug.16.”

Anthony Dirrell – “We’re working on some of the same strategies and some different ones, but they’re old things that I know will work on Aug. 16.”

Omar Figueroa Jr. – “We’ve changed a few things just because we want to try to encompass everything. We work on boxing, brawling, speed and movement. Hopefully it all comes together for me at the same time.”

Deontay Wilder – “This is boxing, and this is the heavyweight division. So you can’t take anyone lightly. I’m not treating this like a warm-up. My main focus is fighting for a title, but I’m not looking past my opponent on Aug. 16.”

Q: What have you been doing to pass the time when you are not in the gym?

A: Shawn Porter – “I’m normally at home relaxing, and I love going to the movies too. You can usually find me at one of the two.”

Kell Brook – “I rest and sometimes I like to have a walk down the strip. It’s nothing too strenuous though.”

Sakio Bika – “We go to the movies, or I’ll go to the mall and try to walk around and keep busy. This is not the craziest city, so there aren’t a lot of distractions. That makes this a great place to train.”

Anthony Dirrell – “I like to play games. We’ve got a gaming system, and we go to the movies. We don’t do anything too big though because the focus has to stay on the fight.”

Omar Figueroa Jr. – “I have my daughter with me almost every day. So I spend a lot of time with her. I also play video games.”

Deontay Wilder – “I love the water. So I swim a lot. I get massages. We go to the movies and I spend time with my kids. I’m traveling a little bit too. It’s tough to fit everything in, but I’m love being a father and I love being around my kids. However, even when I’m away from the gym my mind is focused on boxing. I’m always working on things and trying to figure out how to get the world title. I’m so ready to go for the title fight that I shouldn’t even need a training camp. I’ll have one, but I feel like I’m prepared right now.”

Q: In terms of diet, are you doing anything specific during this camp?

A: Shawn Porter – “Nope, we know what works and we know what got us here. We stick to that.”

Kell Brook – “Not really, I’ve just been sticking to it and staying in great health.”

Sakio Bika – “No, I’m not doing anything special really. I eat what I want to eat, but I eat clean. I never have to cut much weight.”

Anthony Dirrell – “No, I’m eating the same things as always. I don’t have a problem with weight. I’m careful with what I eat, but I can eat what I want.”

Omar Figueroa Jr. – “Yes, this camp has been totally different. It has to do with me maturing as an athlete. I’m closely following my diet plan. I’m eating every three hours, and I’m avoiding sodium and carbs. I’m surprising myself this time around. I got myself in line because this is for the good of my career.”

Deontay Wilder – “No, not really. As a heavyweight I can basically eat anything. But I have a high metabolism as well so that helped. I just try to make sure to eat the right things.”

Jorge Linares – “I’m right on weight. I feel good and even though this fight is not at my regular weight of 135 pounds, I feel very good. Whoever can’t make weight with the extreme heat here in Las Vegas, has serious issues. Thankfully, I feel very good.”

Q: What is the one thing you can’t eat during training that you miss most?

A: Shawn Porter – “I stay away from most things actually. My diet is typically just clean, organic food with lots of vegetables.”

Kell Brook – “There’s no one thing really, I just try to eat healthy all around.”

Sakio Bika – “It’s not about food for me. The one thing I don’t have in training camp is my family and my friends. Here in training camp I don’t have anyone, and I miss the people that are closest to me. I miss having breakfast and dinner with my family. But I know this is business. I’m here to train. I know in a couple of weeks and I can see those important people again, and they understand what I’m doing here.”

Anthony Dirrell – “No sweets!”

Omar Figueroa Jr. – “I feel like I’m a pregnant lady with some of the cravings I’ve been having. Lately I’ve been wanting gummy bears, and pork rinds – stuff that I don’t even eat normally.”

Deontay Wilder – “I’m staying away from the fried foods.”

Q: What is your biggest motivation while training?

A: Shawn Porter – “It’s all about the prize. I know what’s to come and where I’m headed. The outcome is what motivates me to put on a great performance for the fans on fight night.”

Kell Brook – “I like to prove people wrong and challenging myself. My family helps a lot too.”

Sakio Bika – “It’s about family first because I have to come here and work hard to provide for them. I love what I’m doing, and I love boxing. At the end of the day it’s about coming here so that I can put food on the table. That’s why I wake up early in the morning.”

Anthony Dirrell – “My two-year-old son motivates me to make a better life for him and my family.”

Omar Figueroa Jr. – “My family is most important, and the kind of lifestyle that I’m able to offer my whole family means a lot to me. I want to look out for my parents and my brothers too. I want to be able to give them the lifestyle that they’ve always wanted. I’m prioritizing things like my daughter’s college fund too.”

Daniel Estrada – “I have been waiting for this opportunity for almost a year. I’ve been the mandatory challenger for a while, but for some reason I couldn’t get the fight for the title. Now the opportunity is here and I am very positive I will become a World Champion on August 16.”

Deontay Wilder – “My motivations is fighting for a world title. I need to go into the ring and take care of my opponent on Aug. 16. I have to fight to win and succeed in order to provide for my family.”

Q: What is your typical training day like during this camp?

A: Shawn Porter – “My day starts with a 7 a.m. training session on the track that takes about an hour. Then I rest before heading to the gym to box from around 1- 4 p.m. Then I relax for a bit before heading for a massage and maybe an ice bath. I also like to work in some basketball on certain days.”

Kell Brook – “It all depends really. I start with a run in the morning. Then we do strength and condition. I spar in the afternoon, and then we do some technique work.”

Sakio Bika – “It’s six days a week. I wake up at 6 a.m. and run. Then I eat breakfast. After that I go to gym, and at noon I work with Kevin and spar. We finish up around 4p.m. and then I rest. Later I eat dinner and go to bed early.”

Anthony Dirrell – “I wake up at 6:30 a.m. We train hard in the morning, and then I rest for a bit. Then we go to gym to box and spar. Later in the evening we do strength and conditioning training before bed.”

Omar Figueroa Jr. – “Right now I’m back to two times a day, but at the beginning of camp, I trained three times a day. I wake up and go to the gym around 11 a.m. I have insomnia so I go to the gym a little later. I start with strength and conditioning. Then we do boxing around 2 p.m. or 3 p.m. We finish up with a night run around 11 p.m.”

Deontay Wilder – “We hit the bags for a couple of rounds and listen to some old school funk why we get warmed up. Then, I hit the heavy bags for a couple of rounds and we do uppercut work. Every day is different though. Sometimes we switch things up and will keep things as exciting as possible. The same thing every day gets boring, so we like to change it up and keep it fun.”

While each fighter has similar tendencies training, each pugilist has their own story. Please see additional questions below.

SHAWN PORTER

Q:Has Vegas become your favorite place to train?

A: “I love to mix it up and go to different cities sometimes to train, but top to bottom I’d say Vegas is the best.”

Q: What makes Vegas so appealing as a backdrop for training?

A: “This being home now makes everything that much easier. Nothing’s complicated and I’m able to keep it easy.”

Q: You’re obviously coming off of a smashing KO win against Paulie Malignaggi this past April. Can you describe how the aftermath of that fight impacted your approach to this camp?

A: “More than anything, it made me realize that I need to put on another spectacular performance this time around so that I can get what’s coming.”

Q: Kell Brook is going to be the first Brit you’ve faced professionally. Do you expect anything different from him stylistically, and are you preparing differently for him?

A: “No, nothing specific. There’s nothing too complicated or unorthodox about his style. So I didn’t need to bring in any kind of specialist to spar, or plan for anything too different.”

KELL BROOK

Q: You’ve talked about your familiarity with fighting in the U.S. once previously in Atlantic City, and you mentioned how fighting outside of England might actually lessen your stress level heading into the biggest fight of your career. Would you elaborate a bit on that and why you’ll be so comfortable fighting for a title in Carson, Calif.?

A: “I’m confident because I’ve been here before and I’m very well prepared. I have my family with me too. When I box at home in front of eight or nine thousand people who know me there’s a little more pressure. When I come over here it can be easier to focus on the fight.”

Q: You made the trip to the U.S. for this fight on July 30. How was the travel, and do you think that finishing up the last two weeks of your training in the U.S. prepared you as well as your training regimen back home?

A: “Yep, I travel well, and I’m in good company. They keep me smiling.
“I’m ready now though. We’ve just been putting in work and now it’s all about enjoying this and being ready.”

Q: This will be your third professional bout against an American fighter, but both of your previous two were against Carson Jones. From your experience in those two fights, and from watching video of other U.S. fighters, do you notice anything different stylistically about U.S. fighters, and does that change your preparation in training camp at all?

A: “I believe I can adapt to any style. I’ve been sparring with some American fighters. They do have some unique things about their style. But the best fighters know how to adapt, and that’s what I’ll do.”

SAKIO BIKA

Q: Are you preparing differently for Dirrell this time around?

A: “I’m not going to change too much. I’m coming out to fight. I don’t want to run around and chase him. I’m going to show Anthony that I’m ready to do exactly what I’ve always done: to make people happy to see me fight. If he wants to take my belt off of me he better come prepared.”

Q: Is there one specific element of Dirrell’s repertoire that you’re working especially hard in camp to combat better when you meet this Saturday?

A: “The main thing I have to do is keep working hard every day and getting my rest when I can. I’ll be ready for Anthony. I always come to fight. I’m sure that I’m doing everything the way that I’m supposed to. And I’m training hard with my team so that I can defend and retain my belt.”

Q: How, if at all, do you think fighting him at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. will differ from the fight you had at Barclays Center?

A: “Not at all because I’ve fought before in an open arena, and I’ve fought in California before too. Anywhere they put a ring, in a shopping mall, a movie theater, I can fight anywhere.”

ANTHONY DIRRELL

Q: Are you preparing differently for Bika this time around?

A: “It’s basically the same, just tweaking a few things here and there really.”

Q: Is there one specific element of Bika’s repertoire that you’re working especially hard in camp to combat better when you meet on Aug. 16?

A: “Not really, he’s going to be the same fighter. I’ll stick to my game plan and fight my fight, and he’ll do the same.”

Q: How, if at all, do you think fighting him at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. will differ from the fight you had at Barclays Center?

A: “It makes no real difference. A ring is a ring. It’s going to be one on one no matter what.”

OMAR FIGUEROA JR.

Q: You decided to make some changes to your training regimen coming into this camp. You’re now training with your father instead of Joel Diaz, and you’ve moved your training back home to Weslaco, Texas. Can you talk about why you decided to change things up?

A: “It’s just because of my daughter. I see her every day now. It was very hard for me to leave and not be able to see her. That’s a big part of why I had to get my act in line.”

Q: After you had your April fight at StubHub Center, did you learn anything from that experience that may have altered your training now that you’ll be returning there?

A: “Definitely, the April fight wasn’t a hard fight. It wasn’t as physical as I’m used to fighting. The biggest thing was keeping my weight where it needs to be heading into this fight.”

DANIEL ESTRADA

Q: Are you excited for your first opportunity to fight professionally in the U.S.?

A: “I am planning to take advantage of all the things I did in the gym. All the sacrifices will be paid back with a positive outcome on Saturday. I know I did the right things in training, and we have the right strategy at the gym, so there will be no excuses whatsoever.”

DEONTAY WILDER

Q: Your dominance in the ring has been well documented. With none of your professional opponents making it past the fourth round, do you ever feel like it’s a struggle for you to stay disciplined and train?

A: “Discipline is a mental thing, and I’m mentally strong. All of the hard work is in the gym and with the sparring. When it’s time to actually fight that’s the easy part, and it’s more fun actually. But it’s not hard for me to stay disciplined at all. I’ve changed lots of things regarding my style. I’m more patient now. I’m definitely a thinker now and that maturity helps me. People will find out that I’m a different kind of guy. They’ll see when I become the heavyweight champ just how disciplined I am.”

Q: How do you handle training for an opponent yet to be named, and how does that uncertainty impact your training?

A: “Camp has been the same as always. We’re not looking past August 16, but we know to prepare for Stiverne. That’s how confident I am in my ability and skills. I’m not worried about people picking the ‘right guy’ for me. I would be the laughing stock of the world if I had the title fight lined up and lost this fight on August 16. So I just have to get the job done next week and we’ll go from there.”

JORGE LINARES

Q: Do you believe that you have a distinct advantage going into your fight thist week?

A: “I always think positively, you have to jump in the ring thinking like a winner. I trust my training, my trainer and my corner. We don’t have any negativity at all. We feel good and prepared.”

Q: Are you feeling the pressure of needing to secure a win h in order to get a shot at a world title?

A: “It’s obligatory; I have to win on Saturday, without a doubt. There’s no thinking about losing, I have to get a good win this week and then we’ll look for that world title. Winning that world title is the only thing present on my mind.”

Paul Graham looks forward to a Sunday Afternoon First

With the start of the professional boxing season starting in September, Prospect Boxing are pleased to confirm their first show of the upcoming season, which will take place on Sunday 21st September at the Cleland Miners Club, in Lanarkshire.

Looking forward to what will be his fourth season as a promoter, Prospect owner Paul Graham gives a run down off the card “We have local boy Kenny Davidson returning to action after being out for a while, and he is taking on Scott Edgar. Scott has been with me a year and he has had two wins and his confidence is getting better with every fight. I picked this as my headline fight as we have a good matched fight that will deliver. Edgar will want to continue the winning streak he has worked hard for, while Davidson will not want to lose face in front of a home crowd.

“After the success of both Charlie Flynn and Josh Taylor in the Commonwealth Games, Scottish Boxing is on a bit of a high, and I know this event will give some people a chance to come along and get involved. I have spoken to a few people who are keen to come along and experience their first boxing event.

He adds “We also have JP McGuinness returning to action as well.I thought he was unlucky not to get the draw in his last fight against Daniel Cope in Sunderland, in which he took at 24 hours notice.

“Lee Gallacher will also be returning, he’s had two fights so far,in the paid ranks and has impressed me with his style. This is the first time both fighters have fought in the Cleland Club, so the atmosphere and venue will be good experience for them both. I have Rhys Pagan scheduled for September 21st, and after the win over Jenkinson I think he will looking for another strong performance.

The card is completed with the debut of Edinburgh based Lee Redpath, who competes over 4 rounds. “Lee has had a good amateur career, and is looking to come to the pro game. He trains out of the same gym as Craig McEwan and has shown he is dedicated so far, so I am looking forward to seeing him in action and see what he can do.

Prospect Boxing Present ‘A Punch. A Pie. A Pint’ at the Cleland Miners Club on the afternoon of Sunday 21st September 2014. Tickets are priced at £30 and includes a free pint and food.

The stacked card is headlined by Kenny Davidson v Scott Edgar, and also features JP McGuinness, Rhys Pagan and Lee Gallacher. The line up is complete by the professional debut of Lee Redpath.

Gary Shaw Believes Nugaev vs. Shafikov Will Be A Fight Of The Year Candidate

Gary Shaw
SANTA YNEZ, CA (August 11, 2014) – Promoter Gary Shaw believes the scheduled main-event on ESPN “Friday Night Fights” this week, featuring lightweights Rustam Nugaev vs. Denis Shafikov, is going to be a potential fight of the year candidate.

Nugaev (27-6-1, 17 KOs), who’s rated IBF #5, WBC #3 and WBA #7, is currently riding a 5-fight knockout streak since arriving from Russian in 2013. Shafikov (33-1-1, 18 KOs), is coming off a 12-round unanimous loss to current IBF champion, Miguel Vasquez (33-3, 13 KOs). Both fighters have an aggressive style which Gary Shaw believes will make for an exciting night of boxing. The winner will position himself as the mandatory challenger to fight for the IBF title.

“This is going to be one hell of a fight for the fans,” said Gary Shaw. “Nugaev is a tremendous puncher with a great chin and he loves to bring the fight to his opponent. Shafikov is similar as he also likes to come forward and throw big shots. Both fighters have a lot to gain with a victory. With the winner becoming the mandatory to fight for the IBF title, I see nothing but fireworks in this fight, and I feel Nugaev will come out on top.”

“I have to commend ESPN for showcasing a real fight, a fight that the fans are guaranteed to enjoy. There have been a lot of mismatches in boxing of late and fight fans deserve to see more hard-hitting competitive fights, especially in a main event attraction. In Nugaev vs. Shafikov, you have two fighters who are putting everything on the line to get a world title opportunity. This Friday a “WAR” will be shown on ESPN “Friday Night Fights” so everyone should be tuning in. This fight has the potential to be Fight of the Year.”

The ESPN “Friday Night Fights” telecast begins Friday August 15, 2014 at 9:00 p.m. EST / 6:00 p.m. PST from the Chumash Resort Casino in Santa Ynez, Calif.

Tickets priced $35, $50, $65, $85, and $95 are on sale now and can be purchased at the Chumash Casino Box office or online at HERE. Doors open at 5:00 P.M, first fight starts at 5:30 P.M.

“I am excited to hit the ground running in September and deliver four more shows during what promises to be a robust time in the boxing season,” says Lampley. “We will continue to explore hot-button issues, sprinkle in some entertaining elements, and deliver comprehensive unfiltered discussion and analysis of the sport on this platform.”

In addition to multiple replays on HBO and HBO2, the series will be available on HBO On Demand® and HBO GO®.

THE FIGHT GAME WITH JIM LAMPLEY, which launched in May 2012, is the only studio-based program dedicated exclusively to discussing issues, events and personalities in the sport. M-1 Challenge 50: Puetz hopes to duplicate Germany’s World Cup Soccer success Friday vs. Miranda

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (August XX, 2014) – German mixed-martial arts rising star, Stephan Puetz (10-1-0, 4 KO/TKO, 3 SUB), hopes to duplicate his country’s success against Brazil in the recent FIFA World Cup on August 15, when he defends his M-1 Challenge light heavyweight title for the first time against Brazilian challenger Luis Fernando “Hulk” Miranda (12-1-0, 4 KO/TKO, 7 SUB) in M-1 Challenge 50’s co-feature event.

M-1 Challenge light heavyweight champion Stephan Puetz

M-1 Challenge 50: Battle on Neva will be streamed live in high definition on www.M1Global.TV, outdoors from the St. Petersburg city center open area. Viewers will be able to watch the preliminary fights for free and the main card for a limited offer of only $1.00 USD by logging on to register at www.M1Global.TV. Fans may watch all of the action on their computers, as well as on Andriod and Apple smart phones and tablets. (see more details below)

Stephan Puetz (R) and Viktor Nemkov

Puetz was originally scheduled to make his first title defense in a rematch against the previous champion he defeated last March in their M-1 Challenge 46 championship fight, Viktor Nemkov, who suffered torn ligaments in his hand during training camp that, unfortunately, forced him to pull out of celebrated M-1 Challenge 50 anniversary show and be sidelined for several months.

Nemkov’s replacement is equally worthy challenger Miranda, a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, in addition to being the Monster Black Combat and King of Combat champion back home in Brazil.

Germany shocked Brazil, 7-1, in the semifinals of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, en route to becoming the world soccer/football champion with a 1-0 triumph over Argentina in the championship final match.

Stephan Puetz

“Football and martial arts are totally different sports,” Puetz noted, “but I would love to score some goals against Miranda, too. I will try to beat Miranda with all of my skills and power in order to stay M-1 champion. This has nothing to do with nationalities, though. The World Cup semifinals was a bad crushing and something unheard of before. Let’s put it like this: I will try to be as dominant as the German National Team has been.”

M-1 Challenge heavyweight champion Damian “Polish Pitbull” Grabowski (19-1-0, 6 KO/TKO, 6 SUB) takes on fellow Pole, undefeated No. 1 contender Marcin “Tybur” Tybura (10-0-0, 4 KO/TKO, 4 SUB), in the newly elevated main event.

Also scheduled to fight on main card are Slovenian featherweight Ivan “Buki” Buchinger (26-4-0, 6 KO/TKO, 16 SUB) vs. Russian veteran Mikhail Malyutin (26-12-0, 5 KO/TKO, 8 SUB), Spanish welterweight Daniel “The Gladiator” Tabera (17-5-3, 4 KO/TKO, 6 SUB) vs. unbeaten Russian prospect Ilya Doderkin (5-0-0, 5 SUB), Germany’s Saba Bolaghi (1-0-0, 1 SUB) vs. Russian lightweight Zulfikar Usmanov 6-3-0, 1 KO/TKO, 4 SUB), Polish featherweight Kamil Maron (5-1-0, 0 KO/SUB, 2 SUB) vs. Russia’s Nikita Chistyakov (1-1-0, 1 SUB), and pro-debuting middleweights Khabib Isaev, of Russia, and Dauren Ermekov, of Kazakhstan.

On the preliminary card in the RosStroilnvest Cup lightweight semifinal matches are Russian prospects Radzhi Aliev (2-2-0, 1 KO/TKO, 0 SUB) vs. Anton Telepnev (6-4-0, 1 KO/TKO), and Artem Glybchak vs. Marat Balaev making their respective professional debuts.

All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Jolene Blackshear and Kenia Enriquez Headline “San Diego: Dangerous Divas” in Seperate Fights On Thursday,September 4th!

(San Diego) – In less than a year, California boxing hall of fame promoter Bobby DePhilippis and his company, Bobby D. Presents, have become in one of the most prominent female fight promoters in the country. So much so that in their recent annual convention held in Chicago, the NABF (North American Boxing Federation) named Mr. DePhilippis the female fight promoter of the year. In just six months, Mr. DePhilippis has presented three title fights including the junior flyweight title won by Kenia Enriquez, the straw weight captured by Amaris Quintana and last month the flyweight belt won by Chantal Cordova. In the next edition of “San Diego Fights” scheduled for Thursday, September 4th, at the only home for local boxing in San Diego, the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Mission Valley, Bobby D. Presents features “Dangerous Divas” when former two-time world champion Jolene “Classy Assassin” Blackshear (8-5, 3KO) of San Diego comes back in the six round main event.

Blackshear captured the IFBA light flyweight title in just her third fight back in 1997 and after losing it in her third defense, took a nine year break from the sport. She came back with a vengeance as she defeated current WBO flyweight champ Melissa McMorrow in her first fight back and since then has not looked back earning wins over Lili Barajas, Linda Soto and Riverside’s Sindy Amador, the current IFBA 108lb champ. In her second fight of the year, Blackshear will face the tough Susan Reno (1-2-1) of New York in the light flyweight division over six rounds. Reno is no stranger to “America’s Finest City” since last April she faced the “Diamond Girl” Amaris Quintana in one of the best local female fights of the year last April.

NABF Light Flyweight champion Kenia Enriquez in Co-Main Event

In the co-main event, the fast rising world-ranked Tijuana fighter Kenia Enriquez (11-0, 6KO) will face former world straw weight champion Mayela “La Cobrita” Perez (11-15-4, 7KO) in a true test of her talent over eight rounds. The WBC#6/IBF#5/WBA#6 light flyweight in the world Enriquez just captured the NABF title over a 7th round TKO of Blackshear but in Perez she will face her most experienced foe to date. With thirty fights to her credit, she triples Kenia’s experience as a pro while facing the best in her division such as Naoko Fujioka, Sindy Amador, Ibeth Zamora, Jessica Chavez, Carina Moreno and the aforementioned Melissa McMorrow.

COMPLETE CARD ANNOUNCED FOR UPCOMING BROADWAY BOXING

dbe_logo
New York, NY(8/11/14) – This Wednesday, DiBella Entertainment will return to NYC’s famed B.B. King Blues Club & Grill for the latest edition of its Broadway Boxing series.

Headlining the eight-bout card will be former WBC featherweight world champion Elio Rojas (23-2, 14KO’s). Ending nearly two-and-a-half years of ring inactivity, Rojas will square off against Robert Osiobe (14-9-4, 6KO’s) in an eight-round junior lightweight matchup.

In the co-feature bout of the evening, DBE’s middleweight contender Lamar Russ (14-1, 7KO’s) will face the always-dangerous Derrick Findley (20-13-1, 13KO’s) in an eight-round middleweight showdown. In December of last year, Russ stepped way up in competition, taking on the three-time middleweight world title challenger Matthew Macklin in a bout that aired live on HBO. Russ, who took the fight on short notice, got off to a good start, but ultimately dropped a competitive 10-round unanimous decision. Russ returned in March of this year, but his bout against Tony Hirsch was stopped in the very first round after an accidental clash of heads caused a cut over Hirsch’s eye. Russ is raring to get back to his winning ways and impress fight fans and pundits alike when he vies against the heavy-handed Findley.

Competing in an eight-round super bantamweight contest will be Brooklyn’s world-rated contender Rafael Vazquez (11-1, 9KO’s), as hemixes it up withDerrick Wilson (10-6-2, 3KO’s). The heavy-handed WBA #7-rated super bantamweight contender Vazquez got a late start to his professional career, but he burst onto the scene last year with an upset ninth-round KO victory over Leon Moore (30-2) to win the vacant WBA Fedelatin super bantamweight crown and propel himself into the WBA’s top ten ratings. Vazquez is resolvedto fight his way into title contention, but he must first get by the dangerous Wilson, who holds four victories over previously undefeated opponents.

Returning to the ring for the sixth time in just his ninth month as a pro, Brooklyn’s 18-year-old phenom Junior Younan (5-0, 4KO’s) will be looking to make it a perfect 6-0 when he battles Marlon Farr in their four-round super middleweight matchup. Younan was a star as an amateur, and, since turning pro last November, has thus far lived up to the hype. All four of Younan’s knockouts have come before the two-minute mark in the very first round. In Younan’s latest outing, he showed flawless boxing and defensive ability to go along with his lightning quick hands and devastating one-punch knockout power. Younan is one of the brightest young stars in all of boxing and truly one to watch.

After turning pro in December 2012, Westchester County’s Bryant “Peewee” Cruz (11-0, 6KO’s) has quickly developed into one of the most popular figures in the NY boxing scene, and his legion of adoring fans continues to grow with each outing. The popular prospect, who signed an exclusive co-promotional contract with DBE and New Legend Boxing earlier this year, will challenge Jose Morales (7-5, 2KO’s) in their six-round junior lightweight matchup.

Making his much-anticipated pro debut will be DBE’s newly signed and highly regarded 2012 Olympian Jonathan Alonso. Born in the Dominican Republic, Alonso moved to Spain when he was seven years old and took up boxing just nine years later. After representing Spain at the 2012 Olympics, Alonso was one of the most sought after amateur boxers ever to come out of the country. With tremendous speed and power, a very bright future is expected for the talented 23-year-old prospect. He is scheduled to make his debut against Jose Gomez in a four-round junior welterweight matchup.

Fellow DBE-promoted New York Golden Gloves champions Travis Peterkin (11-0, 5KO’s) and Louis Cruz (8-0, 4KO’s) are also set to see action in separate six-round bouts, with Peterkin facing off against Lamont Williams in a light heavyweight matchup and Cruz fighting the upset-minded Cameron Kreal in a junior welterweight contest.

Brooklyn’s Peterkin has already picked up one win thus far in 2014. He was scheduled to fight back in May, but was forced to withdraw from the bout after coming down with the flu shortly before fight night. Peterkin will be focused on getting his career back on track when he boxes the California-native Williams.

Following a second-place finish at the 2011 National Golden Gloves, the 23-year-old Cruz competed in the 2012 US Olympic Trials before turning pro later that same year. He won all four of his fights in 2013 and has already picked up three victories this year. The Bronx-native will be determined to stay on course when he swaps leather with the tough Kreal. However, Kreal, who is coming off back-to-back victories over previously undefeated opponents, would love to make it three in a row next Wednesday night.

The event on August 13 is sponsored by Manfredi Auto Group and Everlast. Tickets are currently on sale and are priced at $125, $100, $75 and $55. Tables are also available for purchase for this event, with VIP tables going for $1,000 per table (5 seats at $200 per seat), Ringside tables for $500 (5 seats at $100), and $375 tables (5 seats at $75). Tickets are available for purchase by calling the DiBella Entertainment office at (212) 947-2577. Doors open at 6:30pm with the first bout scheduled for 7:00pm.

Luis Palomino Shines at WSOF 12 With Ferocious KO Over Lewis Gonzalez

LAS VEGAS – (Aug. 9) – Peru’s top mixed-martial-artist may soon find himself fighting for a World Series of Fighting title, as Luis Palomino (23-9) scored a devastating first-round knockout win of a previously undefeated Lewis Gonzalez (9-1).

Palomino was looking to trade bombs from the start, and he defended his opponent’s takedowns while using foot sweeps to keep him off-balance and delivering crisp punches in combinations. Gonzalez did briefly work the fight to the floor, but Palomino worked immediately back to his feet and resumed the assault.

The attacks opened a cut on Gonzalez’s head, and as blood streamed down his face, Palomino again swept his legs before throwing a high kick that saw the knee land flush. Gonzalez crumpled to the canvas, and Palomino landed two more punches before referee Herb Dean could call of the fight with 18 seconds left in the first round.

“I’m a natural-born striker,” Palomino said. “I love knocking people out. I feel like that’s something I had over him. And the experience factor.”

Palomino added: “The kid has a bright future. His strength is his wrestling and he really believes in the wrestling; that’s how he’s won most of his fights. So whether he’s feeling good or if he’s feeling under pressure, he’s always looking for the takedown. So I just had to wait, time it right and clip him.”

In the night’s co-feature, Brazilian wrestling standout Ronny Markes (15-3) grinded out a win over Cully Butterfield (13-4), scoring a unanimous-decision victory in a grappling heavy affair.

Markes came close to finishing the fight on a few occasions, nearly securing a rear-naked choke in the first round and ending the second round by punching away from back mount, but Butterfield simply refused to go away. Still, Markes was always in control of the moderately paced affair, and the action seemed more one-sided than the three 29-28 scored indicated.

In 195-pound catchweight action, Elvis Mutapcic (14-3) proved to be just a little too much for an impressive Kelvin Tiller (6-1), outwrestling his opponent en route to a unanimous-decision win.

The two had brief clashes of strikes on the feet, but Mutapcic found his most dominant opportunity against a creative opponent was to put him on his back. Mutapcic did exactly that, and Tiller simply couldn’t get back to his feet. At the final bell, it was clear Mutpacic had done enough to win, and was awarded the victory with scores of 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28.

Afterward, Mutapcic admitted he was happy with the win but was disappointed with the process.

“I’m usually a finisher, but I’m trying to expand my game, so it was good to get some experience on the ground tonight,” Mutapcic said. “I’ll have to watch the fight and see what I need to improve on. I think I should have moved more. I was a little flat-footed.”

In an important bantamweight matchup, Brandon Hempleman (10-2) shut down the vaunted wrestling of Olympic medalist Alexis Vila (14-5) and kickboxed his way to a unanimous-decision win.

Vila was a game competitor from start to finish, but Hempleman matched his speed on the feet and was often quicker on the trigger with his punches and kicks. Vila was aggressive until the end, but Hempleman was just a touch better and was awarded the decision win with scores of 29-28, 30-27 and 30-27.

“I thought I won the fight,” Hempleman said after the win. “I had the better shots. He’s a little bit shorter than me so I had to watch my reach, but he hit hard. He didn’t feel small.”

In the night’s first main-card contest, bantamweight prospect Matt Sayles (3-0) earned an impressive decision win over Bryson Hansen (7-2), battling back after nearly being finished in the opening round.

It was a Hansen left that sent his opponent crashing to the floor, but Sayles crawled back up, survived the following onslaught and then took over for the rest of the fight. Sayles showed incredible movement and angles as he picked apart his powerful opponent, rifling in right hands from all angles and racking up points. At the end of 15 minutes, Sayles was awarded the come-from-behind win, 29-28 on all three judges’ cards.

“I just survived it at the start,” Sayles said after the win. “I just survived. I knew I had to get back up and could win the fight.”

In the night’s final preliminary bout, Lucas Montoya (7-3) picked up a thrilling win over Jimmy Spicuzza (5-2), stopping his opponent with a rapid-fire barrage of strikes at the 4:11 mark of the first round.

Montoya’s jab was crisp from the beginning of the fight, and he busted up Spicuzza’s nose in the early going. A gritty Spicuzza battled back, throwing quick combinations as he looked to stage a comeback. Just when it looked like things were going his way, Montoya clipped him again and then fired non-stop punches until Spicuzza hit the floor and referee Kim Winslow waved off the fight.

Las Vegas-based welterweights Danny Davis Jr. (10-8-1) and Jorge Lopez (11-5) turned in an early thriller, as the two went back and forth on the feet for three full rounds. In the end, it was Davis Jr. who was awarded the unanimous-decision win.

The longer Davis Jr. tried unsuccessfully to bring the fight to the floor a handful of times and was forced instead to compete in the feet. That suited him just fine, as he danced and moved and worked long punches while also firing kicks to the body. Meanwhile, Lopez relied on more on power shots with his hands, and while he landed his fair share of big blows, he was never able to truly hurt his foe. That allowed Davis to rack up points, and he was awarded a unanimous-decision victory, 29-28 on all three cards.

In a back-and-forth bantamweight affair, Adam Acquaviva (2-1) earned a hard-fought split-decision win over a game Cody Maltais (2-1).

Maltais looked frequently to bring the fight to the floor, but Acquaviva defended each advance and remained on the feet. Forced to fight his opponent’s game, Maltais obliged by standing and trading in the pocket, but was Acquaviva’s accuracy that earned him the nod in a razor-thin decision

In the night’s first contest, featherweight prospect Bryson Gutches (3-0) kept his perfect career record intact with a second-round submission win over fellow Las Vegas resident Soslan Abanokov (4-2).

The two went back and forth in the grappling game in the opening frame, but when Gutches worked quickly to mount in the second, Abanokov turned and exposed his back. Gutches happily latched on and worked in a rear-naked choke, scoring a tapout win 67 seconds into the frame.

LIGHT WELTERWEIGHT KING GARCIA EYES PETERSON WORLD TITLE UNIFICATION BUT MUST FIRST PASS SALKA TEST THIS SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE ON BOXNATION

Danny Garcia
LONDON (Aug 8) – Light welterweight kingpin Danny Garcia is hoping to set up a unification clash with IBF champion Lamont Peterson later this year.

The reigning WBC, WBA and Ring Magazine world champion takes on Rod Salka this Saturday night, live on BoxNation, and aims to come through the challenge unscathed so he can set up a mouth-watering showdown with Peterson.

The Washington native Peterson is also set to appear on the bill at the Barclays Center in New York this weekend, with Garcia aware victory for both is likely to see them in opposite corners next time around.

“At the end of the day, it’s what I want [a fight with Peterson] because I can say what I want, but you know, right now, I’ve got August 9, so I can’t look past anybody,” said Garcia.

“The same with Lamont Peterson, he can’t look past Edgar Santana. At the end of the day, we’ve both got to get these victories and at the end of the year or the beginning of next year we could do a unification bout,” he said.

The 26-year-old Garcia has taken some flak at his choice of opponent this time around as he steps in with the unheralded Salka, who has a record of 19 wins with three defeats.

However, the Philadelphia pugilist is refusing to underestimate his opponent, well aware that an upset could be on the cards if he isn’t at his best.

“I’ve got to go in there and be smart. I can’t make mistakes. I’ve got to stay sharp. I’ve got to stay composed. I’ve got to work on my jab, I’ve got to move my head and I’ve got to go in there and seek and destroy and look like a champion,” said Garcia.

“I think it’s very important for me to go out there and look good on Saturday. I’ve got to go in there and look like a champion. I’ll fight at the Barclays Center. I love the atmosphere there. It’s a beautiful arena. I’m very motivated.

“I did everything right this camp. I haven’t made a lot of mistakes sparring, so I’m looking good. I’m looking sharp and come August 9 there’s going to be another excellent performance and I’m going to go in there and try to give my fans a knockout,” he said.

The bout will be a catchweight at 142 pounds, with the 31-year-old Salka believing that Garcia will not let doubts about his choice of opponent affect him come fight night.

“Honestly, at this level I don’t really feel like anybody listens. None of the fighters are really taking any kind of praise and any of that stuff. Like Danny says, at the end of the day, we’re two guys with two hands and we’re going to go in there and we’re going to fight,” said Salka.

“It really doesn’t matter what anybody is saying because that’s the facts. So, absolutely not, I don’t think there’s any more pressure. We feel pressure going in there to fight regardless.

“It’s what we do, it’s what we do every day, it’s what we train to do, it’s what we’ve trained to do for years. It’s going to be an awesome night and we’re going to go in there and handle our business and we’re going to get it on August 9,” he said.

The night’s action also sees Peterson square off with Puerto Rican hitter Santana, with middleweight Danny Jacobs – one of modern boxing’s great comeback stories after overcoming a rare form of bone cancer – competing in his hometown for his first world title against Jarrod Fletcher, with the WBA belt up for grabs.

Garcia vs. Salka is live on BoxNation (Sky 437/490HD & Virgin 546) this Saturday night. Visit www.boxnation.com to subscribe.

Lane stuns Felix in CES MMA title bout

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Aug. 8th, 2014) – Julian Lane appears to have found a second home in the heart of the northeast.

Fighting in front of a nationwide audience on AXS TV, Lane (8-3-1) choked out Providence’s Luis Felix (11-8), putting him to the sleep face-first on the canvas, via the guillotine to capture the vacant CES MMA Lightweight Title in the third round of the scheduled five-round main event of “CES MMA XXV” at Twin River Casino.

Felix and Lane were supposed to fight in June, but Felix withdrew the week of the fight due to a rib injury. Bad blood between the two developed when Lane accused Felix of faking the injury so he could instead watch Lane fight Philadelphia’s Gemiyale Adkins that same night at Twin River.

Lane promised to “knock his head off” and nearly delivered, catching Felix with a right hook to the chin late in the third and subsequently locking in the guillotine, choking Felix unconscious with just four seconds remaining in the round. Lane, a Mansfield, Ohio, native more commonly known for his brief stint on The Ultimate Fighter, has now won three consecutive fights, including the last two in Rhode Island.

Felix came out strong, trading blows with Lane in the opening round and nearly catching him in a rear-naked choke in the closing seconds. Lane survived and turned the tables in the second, locking Felix in a similar hold just seconds before the bell rang.

“CES MMA XXV,” which aired live on AXS TV, also featured an impressive win by Brazilian Gil de Freitas and Adkins, who returned to defeat the previously unbeaten Nate Andrews.

Having lost three consecutive bouts and six of his last seven entering Friday, Philadelphia lightweight Adkins (9-8) recorded what might’ve been the biggest win of his career on the televised main card, defeating Andrews (6-1), the East Providence, R.I., native, by unanimously decision, 29-28, on all three scorecards.

Andrews used his height and reach advantage to control the opening round against the 5-foot-10 Adkins, but couldn’t finish him despite several attempts at a rear-naked choke. Adkins survived the opening round and used his strength and ability to fight on the inside to gain control of the fight. Both fighters exchanged submission attempts throughout the final 10 minutes of the bout, surviving each time and inevitably rising to their feet to bring the action back to the center of the cage.

Andrews continued to use his reach, but Adkins never buckled and used his ground game to win rounds two and three and snap Andrews’ six-fight win streak. Andrews’ inability to finish on several attempts kept Adkins in the fight; the Philadelphia slugger looked fresh down the stretch while Andrews appeared winded, particularly in the final round. Friday marked Adkins’ first win since he beat Adam Penberthy in 2013.

Arguably the best-kept secret in the northeast, the heavy-hitting de Freitas (17-5, 6 KOs) earned yet another explosive victory, knocking out crafty lightweight George Sheppard (15-9) of Richmond, Va., with a right hook to the chin in the closing seconds of the second round. Sheppard managed to survive a series of right hands toward the end of the opening round and even managed to land some effective blows of his own in the second, but de Freitas eventually caught him trying to backpedal and sent him crashing to the canvas at the 4:52 mark, prompting referee Dan Miragliotta to stop the bout.

The heavy-handed de Freitas, who trains out of Ludlow, Mass., has now won four consecutive bouts, among them an equally explosive win over former UFC vet Chuck O’Neil in August of 2013.

Japanese bantamweight Tateki Matsuda (10-5) won his second consecutive fight in the opening bout of the televised main card, submitting the tough Robbie Leroux (5-5) of Fall River, Mass., in the closing seconds of the opening round. Matsuda, who fights out of Boston-based Sityodtong, softened Leroux with effective ground and pound toward the end of the round and earned the victory at the 4:53 mark with a rear-naked choke. Leroux dislocated his right shoulder in the process and immediately tapped out.

Also on the main card, Amsterdam, N.Y., middleweight Harley Beekman (6-2), ranked No. 2 in the northeast, narrowly defeated top-ranked Chip Moraza-Pollard (8-7) of Plymouth, Mass., by split decision, 29-28, 28-29, 29-28. Known primarily for his striking ability, Pollard never found his rhythm as Beekman scored early and often with aggressive takedowns to keep Pollard from letting his hands go.

The loss for Pollard comes just five months after a critical win over Tom Egan in March. Beekman will more than likely rise to No. 1 in the northeast when the updated rankings are announced.

Unbeaten featherweight prospect Charles Rosa (9-0) of Coconut Creek, Fla. (Peabody, Mass.) kept his perfect record intact, submitting Jake Constant (5-5) of Springfield, Ill., via arm bar 3:36 into the opening round.

On the preliminary card, Providence middleweight Eric Spicely (5-0, 2 KOs) remained unbeaten with an impressive win over 37-fight veteran Nuri Shakur (17-21) of Nashua, N.H. Spicely earned the stoppage at the 1:34 mark of the opening round, bludgeoning Shakur with a series of unanswered lefts, rights and short elbows, forcing referee Kevin MacDonald to stop the bout.

Welterweight Wayne Ahlquist (1-0, 1 KO) of Nashua, N.H., debuted in spectacular fashion, making quick work of Tommy Venticinque (1-2) of Warwick, R.I., with a lethal kick to the liver just 29 seconds into the opening round. Ahlquist also won his final two amateur bouts in 2013 before turning pro Friday.

Bellingham, Mass., flyweight Billy Giovanella (6-3) won his second consecutive bout Friday, defeating a game Kody Nordby (3-3) of Woonsocket, R.I., by triangle choke submission at the 3:05 mark of the second round. Giovanella has now won both of his fights in 2014 since losing three in a row last year.

Northboro, Mass., lightweight Jay Bakanowski (2-1, 1 KO) defeated Providence’s Keenan Raymond (2-1) in bizarre fashion in the opening bout, earning the win when Raymond suffered a left ankle injury falling off his own stool in between the first and second round. Raymond could not put pressure on his foot and was forced to quit before the start of the second round. For Bakanowski, it was his first win in his first fight since October of 2012.

FLOYD MAYWEATHER AND MARCOS MAIDANA GIVE CAMP UPDATES AND THOUGHTS ON THEIR SEPTEMBER 13 REMATCH TAKING PLACE AT THE MGM GRAND GARDEN ARENA LIVE ON SHOWTIME PPV®

Floyd Mayweather
LAS VEGAS (August 8, 2014) – As we inch closer to the highly anticipated boxing event “MAYHEM: Mayweather vs. Maidana 2,” both Floyd “Money” Mayweather and Marcos “El Chino” Maidana participated in separate “network affiliate days” earlier this week in promotion of the SHOWTIME PPV presentation of their rematch.

Here’s what the fighters had to say with just over a month to go before mayhem inLas Vegas.

FLOYD MAYWEATHER, Eleven-Time, Five-Division World Champion

“The first fight was action packed for the first four rounds before I took control. He has the will to win like I do. He’s a tough competitor and he has Argentina on his back–and of course I represent the red, white and blue so we must give the fans what they want to see… It’s another blockbuster.

“On September 13, I will be faster. I will be stronger. I will be a better fighter. This time around it will be a more exciting fight.”

“I think that every time that Maidana has gone out and fought opponents, other opponents and even myself, he’s done the same thing. Whereas out of the 45 that I’ve faced, I was able to do different things. I can box. I can counter punch. I can box on the move. I can counter punch on the move. The only way that he can fight is to slug.”

MARCOS MAIDANA, Former Welterweight World Champion

“I don’t know if I’d say this will be easier because even the first one, I didn’t find very difficult. But I already know him and I think it’s a great advantage that I already know Mayweather because he hasn’t given a lot of fighters the rematch.

“I don’t like the media attention, but I have to do it. It’s part of my job for the fight and for the promotion.

“I think more attention is coming because Mayweather is very well known and when you give him trouble and give him a good fight people start to recognize you.”

NUMBER ONE 122-POUND CONTENDER ANDRES GUTIERREZ SEEKS 30TH PRO WIN ON SATURDAY AGAINST MARIO MACIAS

LOS ANGELES (August 7) – Unbeaten in 30 professional fights, super bantamweight standout Andres “Jaguar” Gutierrez will look to keep his “0” intact on Saturday, August 9, when he defends his WBC Silver Championship at home against Mexico City’s Mario “Huracan” Macias at the Auditorio Jose Maria Arteaga in Queretaro, Mexico.

This 12-round main event will be broadcast on Televisa and FOX Deportes, along with a 10-round co-main event featuring the IBF Female Minimumweight Title Fight between Mexico City’s Victoria Argueta and Guadalajara’s Alondra Garcia.

Currently ranked number one in the world by the WBC, Andres “Jaguar” Gutierrez (29-0-1, 22 KOs) is a super bantamweight phenom closing in on 30 wins and a world title shot at the age of 21. The owner of several regional titles over the course of his career, the Querétaro, Méxiconative has owned the WBC Silver belt since 2013, and he’s looking forward to making his third defense this weekend.

Fresh from the biggest win of his career, an eighth-round technical knockout of highly-touted Braulio Santos in March, 29-year-old Mario “Huracan” Macias (26-12, 13 KOs) hopes to deliver another upset victory on Saturday against Gutierrez. A nine-year pro who challenged for the WBA World Bantamweight Title in 2011, Macias is now hoping to move up the 122-pound ladder in the coming months.

Three months removed from her title-winning effort against Nancy Franco in May, IBF Minimumweight Champion Victoria Argueta (12-1, 4 KOs) will defend her belt for the first time on Saturday, and this talented 23-year-old has every intention on staying on top for a long time.

Winner of nine of her 10 pro bouts, 19-year-old Alondra “Magnifica” Garcia (9-1, 1 KO) has been competing professionally since 2012, and now she is on the verge of becoming a world champion. In her most recent fight, Garcia outpointed Montserrat Alarcon in May, and now she’s ready for Argueta.

Gutierrez vs. Macias, a 12-round bout for the WBC Silver Super Bantamweight Title, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Canelo Promotions and sponsored by Corona. Doors open at 5 p.m. CT and the first fight begins at 6 p.m. CT. The FOX Deportes broadcast begins at 10 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. PT and the Televisa broadcast airs at 10:30 p.m. CT.

“DANNY GARCIA VS. ROD SALKA” FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Danny and Angel Garcia
BROOKLYN, N.Y.(August 7, 2014) – With just days to go until their respective bouts, fighters on the “Danny Garcia vs. Rod Salka” fight card hosted a final press conference Thursday at Barclays Center before they fight this Saturday, August 9.

Main event fighters Danny “Swift” Garcia and “Lightning” Rod Salka were joined by fellow SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® participants Lamont Peterson, Edgar “El Camacho” Santana, Daniel “Miracle Man” Jacobs and Jarrod “Left Jab” Fletcher on the stage at Barclays Center to discuss their upcoming fights.

Joining them were Sadam “World Kid” Ali, Anthony Peterson and Zachary “Zungry” Ochoa, who will fight on SHOWTIME EXTREME® prior to the SHOWTIME telecast and Prichard Colon, who fights in a non-televised bout.

Here is what the fighters and participants had to say Thursday:

DANNY GARCIA, Unified Super Lightweight World Champion

“This is my third fight at Barclays Center and it feels like my home honestly. I love the atmosphere here. It was a privilege to be the first fighter to fight for a world title here.

“I ran hundreds of miles and sparred hundreds of rounds; this is the opportunity of a lifetime for Rod Salka and he knows what’s at stake, but I trained like this is my last fight and I overlook nobody.

“All of the fights I’ve been in have prepared me for this fight and to be the person I am today. I feel like a young vet. I’m going to come here Saturday night and handle my business. We’re going to call it the ‘Danny Garcia Show’ – ‘The Purge’.

“My dad is my main motivation. If my dad can beat cancer, there’s nothing I can’t beat. That’s my main motivation and that’s the hunger and the fire in my heart.

“I’m a boxer because I love to fight. It’s in my heart. Sometimes I win a fight and I forget to pick up my check. That’s how much I love boxing.”

ANGEL GARCIA, Garcia’s Father & Trainer

“Danny is ready. We had a 100% camp. In sparring he wasn’t even getting hit. I don’t know about that Puerto Rico ‘bad image.’ We didn’t lose sleep

“Salka is in the wrong predicament right now because that bad image made Danny a better fighter. Danny is 100 percent. The fight is going to be a great fight. I don’t care what the people say.

“They’re calling Danny ‘cherry picker, blackberry picker’ but it doesn’t matter because he still has to go out there and get his (victory). I told him to be a fighter. Nobody ever gave him anything … my job is not to worry about Salka. It’s to worry about Danny Garcia.

“It’s going to be called the ‘Danny ‘Swift’ Garcia Show.’ This is going to be the Fight of the Year.

“I had atage four cancer. Nothing was ever given to me. I was dying. They gave me six months to live – throat cancer at that. I had to live through a feeding tube for two years. That makes Danny who he is today! A fighter!.”

ROD SALKA, Super Lightweight Contender

“The talking is done. We’ve been talking about this too long and I’m sick of it.

“The fight is on Saturday so be ready to come out and see a great fight. Whatever is going to happen is going to happen and I’ll talk to you guys after the fight.

“I trained hard in California University of Pennsylvania. I’ve been training there ever since I was a student. It’s like a second home and helped prepare me for this fight.

“The road to get here has been a long time coming. I never thought I would be in this position and here I am.

“When I first started boxing, it was all about survival and staying in the game. I did everything from serving tables, and other jobs so that I could make money and keep the dream alive of getting to this day.”

LAMONT PETERSON, IBF Junior Lightweight Contender

“It’s fight week. We all know what time it is and I just want to say I’m ready.”

EDGAR SANTANA, Junior Lightweight Contender

“I had a great camp. I didn’t only train to win the fight, I trained to endure whatever Lamont has to bring. Expect a good fight from me.

“I’m a man of few words but I’m going to be ready on Saturday.”

DANIEL JACOBS, Middleweight Contender

“God is good. It’s a pleasure to be back. This is my home. I fought here twice before and the love I get here in this building is tremendous

“My late trainer Victor Roundtree passed away and can’t be with us for this special moment so this fight is dedicated to his memory.

“I just want to thank Jarrod Fletcher for giving me this opportunity and to come over here and fight half way across the world – actually all the way across the world. He’s a gentleman and I have a lot of respect for him.

“It’s been very special to get my story to reach the masses and inspire millions across the world. And if I do win, I will be the first cancer survivor to be world champion.”

JARROD FLETCHER, Middleweight Contender

“This has been a dream of mine since I was a little kid and it’s been 20 years in the making. I’m fighting Danny Jacobs who is quite the man — and has got a great story about him.

“It’s been a long road but I can’t wait for Saturday night. This is my chance and I’m going to take it.”

SADAM ALI, Undefeated Welterweight & 2008 U.S. Olympian

“I’ve been working hard and I’m ready to perform on Saturday night.

“I’m not only excited about performing myself, but I’m excited about watching everyone else on the card perform.

“Thank you for all the support and I’ll see you Saturday night.”

ANTHONY PETERSON, Lightweight Contender

“Everyone on the card knows it’s going to be a great event on Saturday night. Lamont (Peterson), you know what we do, we are going to go in there and handle our business and be done with it.”

ZACHARY OCHOA, Undefeated Super Lightweight Prospect

“I’m excited to be here at Barclays Center today and especially on Saturday. I’m ready to fight and I’ve been training hard.

“For the past month Golden Boy Promotions has been doing a hell of a job. It’s an honor for me to be fighting on this card with all of these fighters. I can’t wait.”

ERIC GOMEZ, Vice President of Golden Boy Promotions

“We’re very happy to be here once again in Brooklyn at Barclays Center. I think we have a terrific card for everyone

“Barclays Center is quickly becoming the capital for championship boxing here on the East Coast.

“Danny Garcia is one of the most exciting fighters in the sport. He comes to win. He comes to knock you out. He has been fighting his whole life. Danny has proven himself every time he gets in the ring. He was supposed to lose to Erik Morales, he knocked him out, he was supposed to lose to Amir Khan, he knocked him out. He was supposed to lose to Zab Judah and he beat him.

“These are the toughest fights. Not only to be a world champion but you have to be able to prove you belong. That is all Danny does. Proves he belongs every single fight.

“People have had their own opinions about the main event. This will be an exciting fight. I’ve never seen Danny Garcia in a boring fight and this is Rod Salka’s time to fight. Ever since we’ve worked with Rod Salka, he’s always wanted to fight the best. He is going to take full advantage. He’s been working very hard for this fight. It’s do or die for him. When you have those elements it makes for a great fight.”

BRETT YORMARK, CEO of Barclays Center

“We’re thrilled to host another great night of boxing Saturday night; Oscar and his team have assembled a great fight card.

“I’m excited to see Danny Garcia back at Barclays Center; this is definitely his home away from home.

“I want to recognize Daniel Jacobs. I’m thrilled about what he’s going to do in front of his home crowd in Brooklyn on Saturday night. It was just a few years ago when Daniel was in the hospital and his promising boxing career was put on hold. He persevered and in many respects I believe Barclays Center served as an inspiration for him and on Saturday night, Brooklyn’s ‘Miracle Man’ fights here for a world title.

“Daniel Jacobs, you epitomize everything that Brooklyn is about and I thank you for calling Barclays Center home.

“This is our eighth boxing event with Golden Boy and we thank them for their commitment to bringing great fights to Barclays Center. I’d also like to think SHOWTIME for their continued dedication to showcasing Brooklyn boxing.”

STEPHEN ESPINOZA, EVP & General Manager of SHOWTIME Sports

“People have said and written that they know how these fights are going to end. But
boxing matches are fought in the ring. We must remember that these young men have been training for hours and weeks and months for this opportunity. They will be performing on the biggest stage for boxing in New York City and perhaps one of the biggest stages for boxing in the entire world.

“No other venue has made the commitment to boxing that Brett Yormark and Barclays Center have. All of us at SHOWTIME commend Brett and his team for that.

“Rod Salka is a very entertaining fighter and I’m not going to be surprised at all when it is a very competitive fight. That is not a knock on Danny Garcia. This is the opportunity of Rod Salka’s lifetime and he is taking it very seriously.

“It doesn’t matter what people say or what people write. There is a lot at stake this Saturday. No one at this stage is taking anything for granted.”

GREG COHEN, Jarrod Fletcher’s Promoter

“I’ve been working with Jarrod Fletcher for the past couple of years. I’ve been in this game a long time and he might be my most favorite fighter that I’ve ever worked with.

“Jarrod is a rare guy that’s a true professional who is always prepared and does everything right. He is what is good about this sport.

“A lot of people don’t know who Jarrod is. He’s a two-time Olympian and he has all of the pedigree that you could ever dream of to become a world champion and there is no doubt in my mind that on Saturday night Jarrod Fletchers hand will be raised in victory as the new WBA champion of the world.”

DAVID BERLIN, Executive Director New York State Athletic Commission

“Even with a non-title fight as its headliner, for fans that know the sport it’s not about the titles, it’s always about the fight. Danny Garcia vs. Rod Salka promises to be a fight that pleases the fans. I credit Golden Boy for putting a non-title fight at the top of their card.

“Rod Salka is a fighter that comes to fight and we have the great Pennsylvania rivalry of Philadelphia against Pittsburgh.

“I’m a strong supporter of New York fighters and I’m thrilled that Edgar Santana and Daniel Jacobs have shots at world titles here in Brooklyn.”

BOXING RETURNS TO THE “JEWEL CITY”

Following up a successful show last year that featured world class talent from the Top Rank stable as well as local prospects from the Los Angeles area, Glendale Fight Night has outdone itself with a fully stacked card of compelling bouts at the Glendale Civic Auditorium this Saturday, August 9th.

Glendale Fight News offers up a preview of some of Saturday’s most interesting bouts. In these matchups, fight fans are guaranteed some nonstop action, knockouts, tough bouts to score, and possibly an upset.

Bash Boxing | Jose Felix Jr.
Jose Felix Jr. (26-1-1)

Jose Felix Jr. (26-1-1)
vs. Alejandro Rodriguez (21-14-1)
Don’t let the record fool you folks. Jose Felix, Jr., coming off the first loss of his career when he challenged Bryan Vasquez (32-1) for the interim WBA Super Featherweight, is potentially in for a very long night with Alejandro Rodriguez. In his last bout, Rodriquez took undefeated prospect Haskell Rhodes (19-0) to the brink of an upset in a split decision that barely went in the favor of highly regarded Rhodes.

Bash Boxing | Jose Felix Jr.
Ivan Najera (13-0)
Bash Boxing | Jose Felix Jr.
Stan Martyniouk (13-1)
Ivan Najera (13-0)
vs. Stan Martyniouk (13-1)
Currently scheduled as the co-main event of the live “Solo Boxeo Tecate” broadcast on Unimas, this lightweight attraction is a typical contrast in both boxing styles and the roads boxers travel to realize their dreams in the sport. And this often leads to difficulty in predicting a result.

Najera, sporting the same “Bam Bam” nickname of Top Rank stablemate Brandon Rios, will play the role of “Bull” in this bout. While Martyniouk, a former #1 ranked National amateur with 32 championships in less than 7 years, will be the “Matador” in this affair.

Bash Boxing | Jose Felix Jr.
Egis Kavaliaskus (6-0)
Bash Boxing | Jose Felix Jr.
Benjamin Whitaker (7-0)
Egis Kavaliaskus (6-0)
vs. Benjamin Whitaker (7-0)
Any time you get two hungry welterweight prospects with undefeated records into the center of the ring, you are pretty much guaranteed a barnburner. Neither fighter is going to want to see their “0” go and both fighters will give it their all to make sure their respective professional record remains unblemished.

Kavaliaskus is the more pedigreed and decorated of the two combatants, representing his native Lithuania in the 2008 and 2012 Olympic games and capturing a Bronze medal in the 2011 World Championships. He is trained by Trainer of the Year Robert Garcia and brings that Oxnard power with 5 of his 6 victories coming by knockout.

Bash Boxing | Jose Felix Jr.
Esquiva Falcao (3-0)
Esquiva Falcao (3-0)
vs. Malcolm Terry (6-3)
If there is a bout that one had to predict will end in knockout, this will be the one. There are much more proficient knockout artists on this show such as Jose Zepeda (16 knockouts in 19 fights) and Jose Felix Jr (21 knockouts in 28 fights). And the 2012 London Olympics Silver Medalist from Brazil, Esquiva Falcao, only has one knockout in his first 3 bouts. But Malcolm Terry is the X-Factor here. He is your prototypical all-or-nothing Midwestern brawler. In all six of his victories, Terry has ended them within 3 rounds by knockout. But in his previous bout, Terry was knocked out in the 2nd round by prospect Simeon Hardy (12-0, 10KOs).

Bash Boxing | Jose Felix Jr.
Zachary Wohlman (8-1-1)
Zachary Wohlman (8-1-1)
vs. Paul Velarde (3-4-3)
This is GLENDALE FIGHT NIGHT’s own version of the Freeway Series that is currently being played out by the Dodgers and Angels and may just be a World Series preview. L.A. vs. O.C….Hollywood vs. Tustin….Glam vs. Grit….Wohlman vs. Velarde fits the bill.

Wohlman, the part-time fashion model, L.A. Weekly cover boy, Freddie Roach protégé, and occasional groupie magnet, has made his name known with the young and boisterous Hollywood crowd supporting his every bout in bunches. Velarde, the blue collar boxing trainer at the UFC gym in Lake Forest and married family man and father to Paul Jr., made his name known in the Orange County boxing circuit.

Glazkov-Rossy Final Press Conference Quotes

Vyacheslav_Glazkov
Main Events’ CEO Kathy Duva

This is our 19th show Fight Night event. We have been enjoying a tremendous run. When we started, NBC thought we needed to work with other promoters. It has given us the freedom to create fights that would have never happened otherwise. J Russell Peltz and Jolene Mizzone’s matchmaking has been a huge part of our success along with BAM Promotions. This event has the most promoters of any of our previous events. For this event we have German Titov of Titov Promotions, Pushka Promotions, Sal Musumeci of Final Forum Promotions and Duco Events. It has been a pleasure working hand-in-hand with them.

Saturday is going to be a triple header. Duco is one of the reasons we have a triple header. They are very famous in New Zealand. Main Events has a history with New Zealand. We brought David Tua over here. David Higgins and Dean Lonergan from Duco have been great to work with. The recurring storyline for Fight Night has been coming to America and it seems to be working for Main Events.

Derric Rossy is a solid working class fighter. That is the highest compliment. He is one half of a classic crossroads fight. When we were looking for Czar’s next opponent, we knew we needed to test him and we knew Rossy would test him. Czar comes from the eastern most city in the Ukraine. This gave him a reason to uproot his family and come here to the United States. He has moved to Florida and started working with John David Jackson and Derik Santos. I am so sorry for what he has been through, but I am so happy he is finally here.

Finally, I want to thank Sands. This is the easiest place to put on an event. You get a treat when you come to a fight here. It is a beautiful facility.

J Russell Peltz

This is our sixth (Fight Night) card at the Sands. I think it is our favorite place. Saturday’s fight is shaping up as an all-star clash with Czar Glazkov vs. Derric Rossy. Both are coming off the biggest fights of their careers. The card also has a lot of local fights. Ismael Serrano and Jonathan Williams both trained together here and now they are going to face each other in the ring.

Czar Glazkov

Czar Glazkov

I would like to thank Main Events, Kathy Duva, Sands and NBCSN for the opportunity to come here and show my skills. I just went through the very good camp with John David Jackson and Derik Santos. I got more experience and I can’t wait to showcase that Saturday night. I wanted to thank Derric Rossy for taking this fight. The strongest man is going to win Saturday night.

Lepikhin & Klimas

Egis Klimas, Manager of Lepikhin and Glazkov

[On Czar Glazkov] We have been working together for a couple of years now. He has proved himself over and over again. He moved to the United States and has a new trainer, John David Jackson. I heard a lot from John David Jackson that Czar is much more aggressive now. They had a really good camp. I see a lot of changes coming.

[On Vasily Lepikhin] Kathy thank you very much for giving Vasily Lepikhin the opportunity to come to the United States. This is going to be his first fight here and the first fight under my management. German Titov is very high about him. I am very excited to see him fight on Saturday night. He is a hard worker and he is in great shape. He is ready to show his skills Saturday night.

Rossy & Glazkov

Derric Rossy

This is a great opportunity for me. Thank you, Kathy Duva and Main Events. It is going to be a great fight with two skilled fighters both coming off big wins. It makes for exciting television.

Sal Musumeci, Final Forum Promotions (Rossy’s Promoter)

I would like to thank Kathy. I deal with a lot of promoters world-wide and Main Events comes through with all of their promises. It is a pleasure to work with such a class act. I am amazed this fight is taking place. This is a world class fight. These are all evenly matched fights. Rossy is coming off a big fight. He was an ironworker earlier this year. He quit to box full time. I give Glazkov a lot of credit for taking the fight. He is taking a big risk and putting his #2 position on the line. He has big balls. This is what fighters need to do. This is the fight. Tune in Saturday night. The winner is the next contender.

Robert Berridge

Thank you for the opportunity to be in America. It is my dream to showcase my skills and fight here.

I had a good camp in Miami and it was good, hard training. Sergey Kovalev was one of my mentors and he was very nice to me. Thanks to my team and my promoter and Egis, my manager, and my trainer. I am ready to show a good fight on Saturday.

Parker & Barry

Kevin Barry, Joseph Parker’s Trainer

Thank you very much for this opportunity. My relationship with Main Events started in 1992 when we brought Tua over, then we brought Robbie Peden over and he ended up becoming a champion. To be able to bring Joseph over here is very exciting. Parker fought Brian Minto five weeks ago. Joseph took Minto apart in seven rounds and pushed him to the canvas three times before the referees stopped the fight. We had visa issues in New Zealand which restricted our travel to the United States. Joe is in really good shape. We appreciate the opportunity. He has three belts. He is the least experienced in the light heavyweight division and, yet, he has three belts.

Joseph Parker

Thank you for this opportunity. I am in good shape. I fought five weeks ago so I have just been maintaining. It is going to be a good night of boxing.

Keith Thompson

It is a really good opportunity to fight a ranked opponent like Joseph. I came here to win.

GUNNAR NELSON vs RICKY STORY HEADLINES UFC FIGHT PASS EVENT

ufc_title-belt_206
Las Vegas, Nevada – The Ultimate Fighting Championship® has confirmed that top 15 welterweight contenders Gunnar Nelson and Rick Story will collide in the five round main event of UFC FIGHT NIGHT STOCKHOLM on October 4. The entire card will stream live and on-demand on UFCFIGHTPASS.com, the UFC’s digital streaming service, to subscribers in 167 countries and counting.

The main event pits Iceland’s No.12 ranked Gunnar Nelson, 14-0-1 in MMA and 4-0 in the UFC, against No.15 ranked American Rick “The Horror” Story, a five-year UFC veteran who’s 14-8 MMA record includes a 2010 victory of reigning UFC champion Johny Hendricks.

Nelson said: “To headline a card in Sweden is huge for me. They love my kind of style of fighting and I am of course Scandinavian so we have a good connection. I am honored to fight in Sweden and to headline this card.

“Rick Story has fought many of the best fighters. He beat the current champion in Johny Hendricks, he is very experienced and is a very good wrestler. He is a tough opponent and I am happy to be fighting him. Now I will head straight into training. I plan to go to Las Vegas to train with Conor McGregor and to help him prepare for his fight, and then I will most likely go to Sweden from there.”

Story said: “Oh man this is a really exciting match up! Stylistically it’s going to be great because Gunnar is a grappler and an attacker, when it comes to fighting you can’t ask for more than someone who comes at you. As soon as I found out I started to watch his fights on UFC FIGHT PASS.

“I have fought in Germany before but it will be my first time in Stockholm so I am looking forward to seeing the city. My schedule now will be to pack up, leave Vancouver, Washington where I am at the moment and head down to Arizona to the MMA Lab to start training. I’m really excited for this fight.”

The Rock vs. The Ultimate Warrior Fight Slated as Main Event for Special NBC Broadcast Edition of Fight Night Live from Foxwoods Sep. 20

Mashantucket, CT: Thabiso “The Rock” Mchunu (16-1, 11 KOs), the South African cruiserweight who burst onto the scene last August with an upset over “Fast” Eddie Chambers at Mohegan Sun returns to Connecticut to defend his NABF Cruiserweight Title against Garrett “The Ultimate Warrior” Wilson as the main event on a special broadcast NBC afternoon edition of Fight Night on Sep. 20 live from Foxwoods Resort Casino.

Mchunu, 26, is a southpaw from KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa and had fought exclusively on his home soil before making his Fight Night debut on August 3, 2013 against “Fast” Eddie Chambers. Thabiso stunned audiences when he defeated Chambers via unanimous decision in ten rounds. He made his second appearance on Fight Night on Jan. 24, 2014 with another unanimous decision victory, this time defeating Olanrewaju “God’s Power” Durodola, also in ten rounds and capturing the then-vacant NABF Cruiserweight Title. This will be his first title defense.

The always-confident Mchunu said this about his upcoming fight with Wilson, “I’m gonna take Garrett Wilson where he’s never been before.” His trainer, Sean Smith added, “I don’t underestimate anyone, especially Garrett Wilson. But he hasn’t fought anybody like Thabiso. It’s gonna get very uncomfortable in there for him real quick. Thabiso is gonna leave with a lot more fans.” Mchunu is co-promoted by Showpony Promotions and Damian Michael of Showpony said, “It’s time for Mchunu to deliver – Garrett Wilson is a warrior and we take no one for granted. Thabiso would beat (Marco) Huck, (Ola) Afolabi and (Yoan Pablo) Hernandez on the same night.”

Philadelphia native, Garrett Wilson, 32, made his Fight Night debut on November 16, 2013 with a ten-round unanimous decision loss to Vyacheslav “Czar” Glazkov. Glazkov had been scheduled to face fellow heavyweight Tomasz “Goral” Adamek on Nov. 16, when Adamek fell ill just days before the fight. Wilson stepped in with only a few days’ notice and agreed to fight at a higher weight class. Despite the loss, Wilson still managed to earn the respect of the boxing community for stepping up at the last minute and taking a fight at a higher weight class against the dangerous, and undefeated, Glazkov.

Glazkov & Wilson

Mike Gladysz
Wilson said, “I have a lot of respect for Thabiso Mchunu. He is a Grade A boxer. A victory against him will mean a lot for my career. He has a lot to lose and I have a lot to gain. I will prove that ‘The Ultimate Warrior’ is a boxer as well as a puncher.” Wilson’s manager and trainer Rodney Rice added, “I have a lot of respect for Mchunu but I think Garrett is going to be too much for him. There is nothing out there for Mchunu to study to prepare for what he is going to go through on the 20th.”

“What an opportunity for Garrett Wilson to fight for a second time on NBC in front of millions of television viewers nationwide,” said Main Events’ CEO Kathy Duva. “Our policy on Fight Night has always been that we want to reward fighters who give their all to entertain our fans, win or lose. Garrett has done that. Thabiso Mchunu is a fantastic cruiserweight prospect who I believe is headed toward a world title. This is his chance to introduce himself to American boxing fans.”

About September 20:

The Sep. 20th special NBC broadcast edition of Fight Night will take place at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, CT and will feature a ten-round cruiserweight match-up between Thabiso “The Rock” Mchunu and Garrett “The Ultimate Warrior” Wilson. The co-feature and undercard bouts will be announced shortly. Ticket information is coming soon . The card is presented by Main Events, Peltz Boxing and Showpony Promotions. The special NBC Fight Night broadcast will begin live at 3:00 PM ET/12:00 PM PT.

4-TIME WORLD CHAMPION “TERRIBLE” TERRY NORRIS CONFIRMED FOR INAUGURAL BOX FAN EXPO TO TAKE PLACE THIS SEPTEMBER IN LAS VEGAS

terry-norris
Las Vegas (AUGUST 7TH, 2014) – 4-TIME world champion “Terrible” Terry Norris has confirmed that he will appear and have a booth to Meet & Greet his fans at the Las Vegas Convention Center for the inaugural Box Fan Expo that will take place this September from 10am to 6pm. The Boxing Expo will coincide with the rematch fight between Floyd Mayweather jr. vs Marcos Maidana.

Terry will have merchandise to sell to his fans, as well as photos and memorabilia.

Terry Norris bypassed a baseball career for one in the Boxing ring, amassing a stellar 291-4 amateur record. “Terrible” Terry turned pro in 1986 and defeated Quincy Taylor before his TKO win against Steve Little for the NABF junior middleweight title. In 1989 he challenged the hard-punching Julian Jackson for the WBA title, but was halted in the second round.

The resilient Norris bounced back to score a sensational one-round kayo over John “The Beast” Mugabi for the WBC junior middleweight belt. An impressive string of 10 successful defenses followed, including wins over Donald Curry, Jorge Castro, Carl Daniels, Meldrick Taylor, Maurice Blocker, Troy Waters and Sugar Ray Leonard. In his11th title defense, he was upset by Simon Brown via 4th round TKO, but regained the title with a 12-round decision in the rematch six months later.

Terry Norris hung up his gloves in 1997 after a glorious and spectacular career, with a 47-9 (31 KOs) pro ledger. Terry Norris was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota in 2005.

Quote from Terry Norris:

Toronto – Fight Network, the world’s premier 24/7 television channel dedicated to complete coverage of combat sports, presents another stacked edition of Golden Boy Live! tonight, Thursday, August 7, at 10 p.m. ET, as “The Corpus Christi Kid” Jerry Belmontes will return to his Texas hometown to face Puerto Rico’s Abner “Pin” Cotto in the 10-round junior lightweight main event from American Bank Center.

Fight Network’s broadcast will air live exclusively in Canada.

In the co-main event, rising junior welterweight star KeAndre Gibson, fighting out of Austin, Texas, will take a trip to Corpus Christi to square off with Fort Worth’s Jose Hernandez.

Unbeaten in four fights in his hometown of Corpus Christi, Jerry Belmontes (19-4, 5 KOs) will fight in front of his home fans for the first time since April of 2013 when he steps into the ring on August 7. The bout against Cotto will also be the 25-year-old’s first since his April 26 showdown with amateur rival and WBC lightweight world champion Omar Figueroa Jr. where Belmontes gave a supreme effort, only to lose a disputed 12-round split decision. Vowing to get back into the title hunt and earn a shot at a rematch w Figueroa Jr., “The Corpus Christi Kid” wants to make a statement against Cotto.

Aguas Buenas, Puerto Rico’s Abner Cotto (17-2, 8 KOs) has the style to trouble any fighter at 130 pounds, including Belmontes. Cotto is looking to get back in the win column after a hard-fought loss to highly touted Francisco Vargas in March but he knows he is coming into enemy territory to prove he has what it takes. The cousin of recently crowned WBC middleweight world champion Miguel Cotto, 26-year-old Abner is determined to one day bring another title to the family and his first step is defeating Belmontes on August 7.

Coming fresh off of a spectacular fourth round knockout over John Nater in May, 24-year-old KeAndre Gibson (10-0-1, 3 KOs) will be fighting in front of his Texas fans once again when he battles Jose Hernandez. A versatile prospect that many believe will be ruling the junior welterweight division one day, Gibson has won three of his last five fights by knockout and he’ll be bringing the thunder again in Corpus Christi.

A former WBC Youth Champion, 27-year-old Jose “Loco” Hernandez (14-7-1, 6 KOs) is on a mission to deliver a memorable fight on August 7 and get back in the win column after a 2013 loss to highly-regarded Rustam Nugaev. Winner of four of his last six bouts, the popular Hernandez has never shied away from a challenge, and he’s not about to start now.

Belmontes vs. Cotto, a 10-round junior lightweight bout, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Leija Battah Promotions and is sponsored by Corona and O’Reilly Auto Parts. Fight Network’s broadcast airs live at 10 p.m. ET.

Stevenson Ready for the Big Stage!

Baltimore, MD (August 7, 2014) – The majority of fight fans and media outside of the beltway area are likely unfamiliar with welterweight James “Keep’em Sleeping” Stevenson.

Best described as a boxer-puncher, the 31-year-old Baltimorean is 21-0 with 14 wins by knockout. Most of his bouts took place in Maryland but he’s long set his sights on leaving the Old Line State for bigger fights.

Unfortunately, Stevenson’s goal of making it to the next level was sidetracked by multiple tragedies.

In 2011 during a routine jog to prepare for a fight, a stray dog viciously attacked him, requiring Stevenson to get more than 20 stitches. Shortly thereafter, his father James “Woody” Stevenson Sr. passed away as did his mother-in-law. Stevenson’s promising career was put on hold as he had to console both sides of his family and provide additional financial assistance by working more hours at his day job.

“I love boxing to death but that was a very difficult time in my life,” said the soft-spoken Stevenson. “I had to help keep my family together and it was very hard on me, especially because of how close I was to my father. We had a great relationship and losing him was devastating.”

Stevenson resurfaced in September 2012 with a first round knockout and won five more bouts after the unexpected layoff, but still lacked a signature win.

Tomorrow evening, he’ll have the opportunity to go from prospect to contender when he battles fellow unbeaten Sammy Vasquez for the USBA title in the main event of a Fox Sports 1 card live from the CONSOL Energy Arena in Pittsburgh, PA.

Vasquez, 15-0 (11 KO’s), does have a few notable advantages that are difficult to overlook. In addition to having a large fan base in the Pittsburgh area, he’s three years Stevenson’s junior, fought better competition and scored an impressive first round knockout on ShoBox in April. Stevenson however is not looking at Vasquez any differently than he did his first 21 foes.

“He’s jut another guy to me. He breathes just like I do and puts on his boxing shoes one at a time. The guys I’ve seen him fight aren’t on my level, so to be honest I think he’s taking a big step up too!”

Stevenson also brushed off any concern about being on the wrong end of a hometown decision since he doesn’t believe the judges will be needed.

“I’m not worried about the fight (being near his hometown). Anywhere I go, I make it my hometown. Tomorrow night, I’m going to do what I do best which is put people to sleep!”
