Dusty Hernandez-Harrison Returns to Madison Square Garden July 26

WASHINGTON, D.C. (July 22, 2014)- On July 26, Dusty Hernandez-Harrison will return to the “Mecca of Boxing,” Madison Square Garden, and put his undefeated record on the line when he faces off against hard hitting Wilfredo Acuna (15-14, 12KOs) of Nicaragua. The welterweight bout will take place on the undercard of the “G4” mega event between Gennady Golovkin and Daniel Geale for the WBA “Super Championship” title and IBO Middleweight World Championship live on HBO World Championship Boxing.??

Hernandez-Harrison (22-0, 12KOs), the WBC Youth Welterweight Champion who is currently rated WBO No. 15 and WBC No. 21, will be making his second appearance at the famed arena, which may seem like a hometown fight for the Washington, D.C., fighter.??

“We sold a lot of tickets to my fans in Washington, D.C. We have a few buses to bring them to New York. And then with Jeff (Promoter, Jeff Fried of All In Entertainment) from Coney Island and all, it adds a lot of excitement to the fight,” Hernandez-Harrison said. “This is a huge card to be a part of and I will do my best to put on a good performance for everyone in attendance.”??

“Acuna is tough, strong and keeps coming; no question about it. We are preparing for the full eight rounds,” said Buddy Harrison, the young fighter’s trainer and father. “These are the kinds of fighters my son needs to face: rough and busy fighters.”??

The southpaw, Acuna, went seven rounds with WBO junior welterweight champion, Chris Algieri, in September of 2013 before being stopped due to an eye injury. ??
??
This will be the fourth fight of 2014 for the 20-year-old Hernandez-Harrison. Remaining active and being exposed to different looks from a variety of fighters has all been part of Fried’s plan since he started working with the amateur standout in 2012. Hernandez-Harrison has fought all over the country and has been everything from the main event to the opening bout — intentionally designed to give him a range of distinct, in-ring experiences.??

“It’s a big stage and the perfect setting for Dusty to showcase his skills and show why he is widely viewed as the best young welterweight prospect in the world,” Fried said. “Facing fighters like Acuna, who is a rugged southpaw and active in the ring is part of developing a future World Champion,” he added.??

“I just want to thank Jeff Fried, Tom Loeffler, Antonio Leonard and Gary Shaw for allowing me to be part of this historical event,” Hernandez-Harrison added.

Training Camp Notes: Caparello

Australia: As all eyes are on Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (24-0-1, 22 KOs) and the possibility of a unification fight with Bernard “Alien” Hopkins later this year, Blake “Il Capo” Caparello (19-0-1, 6 KOs) sees everyone in the boxing community forgetting about the undefeated southpaw from Australia who is challenging Kovalev for his WBO Light Heavyweight World Title August 2 at Revel in Atlantic City, NJ.

Fans and the media alike are mesmerized by Kovalev’s ability to knockout the majority of his opponents, but Caparello has the ability to go the distance and that could prove troublesome for Krusher, who has never gone more than 8 rounds (and has only done that once in his career: against Darnell Boone on Oct. 9, 2010). Blake is no stranger to lasting deep into the later rounds of a fight, with 14 of his 20 career professional bouts going the distance. He has four complete 12-round fights and five complete 10-round fights. According to Lou DiBella, Blake’s promoter, “Blake is very confident in his ability. He is a gifted boxer and very athletic. For Blake to be successful in this fight, he will need to use his boxing ability and not stand in front of Sergey. He will need to get Sergey’s respect and then look to take him into the later rounds. It is an interesting match-up and I believe it’s going to be a heck of a fight.”

Ed Diller
With all the hype surrounding a possible unification fight between Kovalev and Hopkins, Caparello is hoping Sergey is also looking past him. He does not feel any additional pressure about returning to the United States for only the second time in his career or about fighting on HBO. He said, “There’s no pressure for me. All the hype is about Sergey, so the pressure is on him. I don’t read into anything too much. I’m focused on my job and that is to win the WBO title.” Many fighters are unwilling to get in the ring with “Krusher” – not Caparello. When asked about whether or not he hesitated about accepting the fight he said, “I accepted immediately. We pushed hard for this fight. We love challenging ourselves.”

DiBella feels this fight is a win-win for Caparello, “There is a great advantage to fighting Kovalev: if you manage to hang in there with him, you are going to earn the respect of fans. There are a lot of guys who are afraid of Kovalev, but Blake isn’t. Blake is going to go out there and do his best to win. This is the fight he always wanted.” DiBella also provided this assessment of his fighter, “I knew Blake was a natural. His instincts are excellent. He does a lot of things right. I expect a great performance whether he wins or loses.”

Douglas Targets World title in Fall!

Baltimore, MD (July 21, 2014) – Blue chip prospect Tyrieshia “Lady Tiga” Douglas has her sights set on capturing a world title before the end of 2014.

At 5-0 with 1 win by knockout, the Baltimore-based Washington DC native’s set a lofty goal for herself. As an amateur, she won multiple Golden Gloves and National PAL titles while making Team USA twice. According to industry insiders, if Douglas wins a title in her sixth pro fight, she’d have the third fewest bouts before winning a major world title. The current record holder is Canada’s Jeannie Garside, who captured a belt in her fourth professional bout. Douglas’ Ponytail Promotions stablemate Tori “Sho Nuff” Nelson won the WBC title after only five.

A 2012 Olympic Trials participant, Douglas and her brother Antoine are the first siblings to compete at the trials during the same year. Of all the American fighters who participated in the trials or made the Olympics, Tyrieshia would be the first to compete for a major title.

Regarded amongst the best young female fighters in the world, Douglas is brimming with confidence leading up to a quantum leap in competition.

“I’ve felt ready for a title shot since I turned pro because I’m that confident in my ability,” said the supremely skilled Douglas. “I’m a fighter and the biggest competition is myself. Nobody can beat me but myself and I’m excited for a title fight. I’ve been boxing for awhile and my goal is to the this first belt then many more after that.”

Even though most fighters are maneuvered carefully for a number of years before competing for any kind of title, Douglas’ promoter believes she’s already a championship level fighter.

“Tyrieshia Douglas is a special talent,” said James Hogan, CEO of Ponytail Promotions. “The way she boxes is beautiful and I’ve seen very few fighters at her age male or female that has Tyrieshia’s level of skills, poise and maturity. I’m working on a title fight for her this fall and within a year, expect she’ll be on the pound for pound list alongside Tori Nelson.

Information on Ponytail Promotions’ next card, which is scheduled for early fall, and Douglas’ title bout will be available shortly.

Founded in 2014 by respected Baltimore-based boxing businessman James Hogan, Ponytail Promotions envisions becoming one of the top promotional firms in the United States. With a keen interest in both male and female fighters, Ponytail Promotions will run a total of 10-12 shows per year in Maryland, Virginia, Washington DC and North Carolina. PATRICK HYLAND MEET AND GREET QUOTES

New York, NY (7/21/14) – Earlier this evening, DiBella Entertainment (DBE) held a meet and greet for newly signed top-rated featherweight contender and former world title challenger Patrick “The Punisher” Hyland (27-1, 12KO’s), of Ireland, at Mercury Bar East in East midtown Manhattan. The exciting featherweight will be making his official NYC debut when he headlines DBE’s upcoming Broadway Boxing card at NYC’s famed B.B. King Blues Club and Grill in midtown Manhattan on Wednesday night. In addition to it being Hyland’s NYC debut, it will also mark his long-awaited return to the ring, after a near two-year hiatus due to promotional issues with his previous promoter. Below are quotes from the colorful Hyland.

PATRICK HYLAND:

“This training camp has been great working with my dad and brother Eddie getting ready back home in Dublin. We have been having great sparring with lightweight Stephen Ormond, who is ranked #7 by the WBO, so camp went very well.”

Regarding the long layoff, Hyland stated,”Yes, it was very frustrating being on the sidelines for so long after fighting on the big stage. I wanted more, but the promotional problems kept me out. Things happen though and I stayed in the gym and kept working hard. I knew I’d get it sorted out and would be back fighting eventually.”

“I’m very excited to be a part of team DBE now. I know Lou is one of the top promoters out there and will get me the fights that I want and get me back fighting for titles soon enough. He’s a very honest guy and fun to be around, which is good for an Irish lad who loves a good laugh, haha. I can’t wait to work with him and become another one of his world champions.”

“I am very excited to be fighting here in NYC. I flew in on Thursday and I’ve just been walking around the city and, man, I really do love this city. Now getting to actually fight here, it truly is a dream come true. The big dream for me is to ultimately fight for a title at MSG, so I’m hoping Lou will tie that down in the future, but no pressure boss!”

In regard to building a name for himself here in NYC, Hyland is very confident that the Irish boxing community will take a quick likening to him and his style.

“Well that’s the plan. There are a lot of Irish folks based in NYC and they’ve been looking for another crazy Irishman to light up the fights seen over here just like John Duddy did, so I’m hoping that my style of fighting can excite them and I can build my fan-base here.”

Regarding his future, Hyland wants to stay as busy as possible and get himself back into title contention by early next year. “I’d like to have three or four fights before Christmas to get busy again and then hopefully early in the New Year get a shot at a title. St. Paddy’s Day would be great!”

“I would like to thank Lou and everyone at DBE for bringing me back and all of the fight fans who will be at the show on Wednesday night. I can’t wait to get back in there and I promise that I will be bringing some punishment with me!”

Tickets for the Broadway Boxing event on July 23, sponsored by Manfredi Auto Group, are priced at $125, $100, $75 and $55. Tables are also available for purchase for this event, with VIP tables going for $1,000 per table (5 seats at $200 per seat), Ringside tables for $500 (5 seats at $100), and $375 tables (5 seats at $75). Tickets are available for purchase by calling the DiBella Entertainment office at (212) 947-2577. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the first bout scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Daughter of two-time world champion Steve “USS” Cunningham continues to fight and is put on Heart Transplant List

Kennedy 4
Philadelphia (July 21, 2014)– America was introduced to Kennedy Cunningham when her father first fought on NBC back in December of 2012 when he faced Tomasz Adamek in that epic battle, we learned that she suffered from a severed heart condition called HLHS.

In April when Steve fought Amir Mansour on NBC Sports, the family had just received heart breaking news when they we told that Kennedy was not a candidate for heart transplant as they had hoped.

She had her first open heart surgery at 2 days old and the second six months later. She was hospitalized for the first year of her life and suffered many set backs along the way, including a stroke, many blood infections and also required a trach and vent for several years when she was younger. The doctors that cared for her back then all say that she is a miracle, they saw everything she went through and never thought she would live to be 8 years old! Now, almost 9 years later she continues to show us how tough she is!

Most children with HLHS undergo a third repair which can allow them to live into adulthood, however it was determined that Kennedy was not a candidate due to the anatomy of her heart and the extent of its defects (small pulmonary arteries and tricuspid valve regurgitation). It was then that we were advised that she would have to have a heart transplant. She went through the entire transplant evaluation in our hometown of Philadelphia at the Children’s Hospital there and in March our world was shattered when we were told by the Heart Failure team at CHOP that Kennedy was not a candidate for transplant or any other surgery. We were told, “no matter what, Kennedy is going to die far to soon”. They told Steve and his wife Livvy that the best they could do was give her medicine to help her heart function but that there would come a time when her heart would give out and there would be nothing they could do.

“I was so completely heart broken the day her doctor sat me down and gave me the news,” said Livvy. “My world collapsed. I cried for 3 days straight while I tried to wrap my head around the news and tried to figure out how to live without the hope of a beautiful future for our beautiful daughter, tried to picture our lives without her. I just couldn’t, it was impossible”

The Cunninghams are a faithful, fighting family and decided ‘they were not going to give up on their daughter and just watch her fade away. They chose to seek a second opinion. The Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh agreed to evaluate her and on June 25th, 2014, Kennedy was accepted into their program and listed for a heart transplant! Receiving a heart transplant is giving her a fighting chance to live the full, energy filled life that every child deserves.

“I’ll never forget the day I got the call from my wife with the news, I broke down like never before, I lost it. I was in the middle of my training camp for a must win fight. People close to me told me I should pull out of the fight, that it was too much for me. But I knew that I had to fight for Kennedy, she has been through so many battles in her life and has never once given up and I was not going to let her see her father quit. I turned my sadness and fear into determination and on fight night, I had to dig deep but it was that determination that got me up off the canvas twice to win. We will never give up on Kennedy and are so blessed and excited that The Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh has agreed to take her on and list her”, said Steve Cunningham

Now that Kennedy is listed in Pittsburgh, The Cunninghams’ have to travel there 1-2 times per month for appointments and have to be ready at any time to jump on the road when they get “the call” that she has her new heart waiting for her. Once that call comes in, they will have 4 hours to get her to Pittsburgh and right now, they live 4.5 hours away. Additionally, They will have to remain in the Pittsburgh area for at least 6 months post-op so housing must also be arranged.

After Steve’s thrilling win on April 4, fans and the boxing community reached out to Steve and Livvy asking how they could help.

The Cunningham’s have set up a fund where donations will help this family cover the out of pocket expenses that come along with this amazing opportunity. Traveling to and from Pittsburgh as well as securing and maintaining a “home away from home” while Kennedy awaits her new heart and recovers from surgery.

Notre Dame’s Mike Lee Eager for Fistic Homecoming on ESPN Friday Night Fights This Friday, July 25, at UIC Pavilion in Chicago

MikeLee300
The standard playbook for boxing up-and-comers with just 12 professional fights under their belt is to hone their craft anonymously on various regional undercards, waiting for a chance at a high-profile showcase.

But with his athletic skills and undefeated record, matinee idol looks, tireless charitable work and Finance degree from The University of Notre Dame, as well as the almost unheard of accompanying level of national attention he brings to a sport that desperately needs it, Mike Lee is in no way your average, every day boxing prospect.

A humble and clean-living Subway national spokesperson who donates most of his fight purses to worthy charitable causes such as the Children’s Memorial Hospital and the Ara Parseghian Medical Research Foundation, Lee (12-0, 7 KOs) will take on Paul Gonsalves (7-3, 3 KOs) of Hyannis, Massachusetts, to open the worldwide ESPN Friday Night Fights telecast this Friday, July 25, in front of a huge crowd of his fans in his hometown of Chicago at the UIC Pavilion.

“I’m beyond excited,” said Lee of his upcoming fight. “My last fight in Philly, I was excited to be back in the ring, but to come back home to fight. It’s so special to me. I fight better when there’s more pressure and fans and more attention and that’s what this will be. A national TV fight in my hometown. I’m very grateful.”

Presented by Warriors Boxing, 8 Count Productions, Seconds Out Promotions and Marines Promotions, the night of world-class professional boxing entitled “Conquerors”, will also feature rejuvenated welterweight contender Roberto “La Amenaza” Garcia (35-3, 23 KOs) of Weslaco, Texas, taking on hard-hitting and dangerous Breidis “Khanqueror” Prescott (27-5, 20 KOs) of Miami, via Barranquilla, Colombia in the night’s 10-round main event.

WBA #15, IBF #13, and WBO #11-rated Caleb “Golden” Truax (23-1-2, 14 KOs) of Osseo, Minnesota, will take on former USBA Junior Middleweight Champion Derek “Pooh” Ennis (24-4-1, 13 KOs) in the televised co-main event.

Tickets for “Conquerors” are priced at VIP $151, VIP Ringside $101, Mezzanine $51 and General Admission $31 and can be purchased through Ticketmaster (Ticketmaster.com, 1-800-745-3000), the 8 Count Productions Offices: 312-622-7668 or the UIC Pavilion Box Office: 312-413-5740.More information will be available shortly at 8CountProductions.com.

It’s already been a wild ride in boxing for 27-year-old Lee. The immensely popular breakthrough fighter has fought on the undercards of some of boxing’s most prestigious events. The showdown against Gonsalves will be just his second in his hometown. He turned professional at the UIC Pavilion in 2010.

“Training went well,” continued Lee. “I’ve got my rhythm back from my last big win in April (a sixth-round stoppage of then-undefeated Peter Lewison). I’m healthy and feeling sharp. I’m in San Diego training with (former heavyweight champion) Chris Byrd. This will be our second fight together and we’ve been working together since February.”

Lee says working with a world-class technician like Byrd, one of the smartest in-ring boxers to ever lace up the gloves, has given him a sweeter approach to the science.

“Chris is a phenomenal trainer and his resume speaks for itself. He’s teaching me how to hit and not get hit. I’m becoming more of a boxer and I sit on my back foot a bit more now. I don’t need to take a punch to land three. He’s taught me a lot about counterpunching and moving. Chris is all about movement and changing up the rhythm. He’s really teaching me how to get to that next level.”

Lee is expecting a challenge from Gonsalves, but having access to a boxing mind as sharp as Byrd’s has its advantages.

“I think Gonsalves is a tough guy. He’s a good boxer and he’s beat a bunch of guys. You can’t take anybody lightly, but Chris is a master of styles and we’ve studied him and we’re working on both his strengths and weaknesses and my perceived strength and weaknesses. We’ll be ready when the bell rings. I want to keep beating better and better fighters and keep winning and working my way up the ranks. I want to win a world title. That’s been my goal since I turned pro.”

Lee says there is no timetable for his ascent up the light heavyweight ranks and he will take each fight one at a time.

“We’re taking our time. I didn’t have a big amateur career, but I’ve been getting better and better every fight and sparring with some of the top fighters in the world. I’m certainly a lot better now than I was when I turned pro. As long as I keep getting better and wining my fights, that’s all I ask of myself. There’s been a lot of spotlight on my career with the commercials and the Notre Dame background, but like any other fighter, I will do it when I’m ready. You get offers to fight people, but you want to take each step one at a time. I’ll just keep building and keep fighting tougher guys.”

You have to admire Mike Lee. He could be sitting in an office right now raking in money. But a fighter fights and that’s what’s in his blood. Lee spends countless hours training and a great deal of the rest doing charitable work for various causes. When the lights dim this Friday night, a huge crowd of supporters will go crazy while Lee enters the ring.

Deservedly so. Mike Lee is an above average guy.

“I love it. That’s the main reason why I look forward to coming home. I have incredible support, coast to coast, but especially in Chicago. Not a day goes by that I don’t get mail or a text from friends or family wishing me good luck and telling me they’ll be there. They’re helping me sell tickets. It means the most to me. People support me and seem to like the person I am. I have been very involved in Chicago children’s charities since I turned pro and they respect that and want to support me. Portions of this fight’s purse are going to charity as well. That’s something I’ve always felt strongly about and I’m proud to be part of it.”

MIKE TYSON TO PRESENT EVANDER HOLYFIELD FOR INDUCTION TO NEVADA BOXING HALL OF FAME FORMER FIERCE RIVALS TOGETHER ON STAGE AT THE NEW TROPICANA, LAS VEGAS AUGUST 9

evander_holyfield
In what is surely the culmination of one of the unlikeliest reconciliations in boxing history, former Heayvweight Champion Mike Tyson will deliver the presenting speech for former Heavyweight Champ Evander Holyfield’s induction into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame. Tyson will present Holyfield, and then following Holyfield’s speech, will personally hand the NVBHOF Trophy to Holyfield in a “photo-op” for the ages. The memorable moment will take place Saturday night, August 9, in the beautiful Cohiba Ballroom of The New Tropicana, Las Vegas.

Holyfield and Tyson engaged in two fierce battles at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in 1996-’97. The “Real Deal” won both, first by an 11th-Rd TKO, and the rematch by 3rd-RD disqualification in the famous ear-bite fight. Despite the ferocity of both bouts, the two’s feelings have softened toward each other in recent years, appearing in features and even a commercial together.

Tyson called the opportunity to present Holyfield a “privilege and high-honor.” Evander’s response was quick and to the point: “That is great!” NVBHOF President and Founder Rich Marotta said “This is the kind of thing we showed is possible in boxing last year at our Inaugural Induction Ceremony. Former and even current rivals coming together under the same roof to celebrate boxing. Everyone checks those rivalries at the door. Tyson presenting Holyfield is sheer magic.”

Holyfield was selected for induction in the “Non-Nevada Resident” category along with George Foreman and Roberto Duran by the 35-member voting panel of the NVBHOF. Tyson was an Inaugural Inductee last year in the “Nevada Resident” Class.

Remaining tickets for the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Dinner are available on-line at: nvbhof.com
Tax-deductible tickets are $300 Gold Level, and $175 Silver Level. the $75 Bronze Level tickets are sold-out.
The Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame is an IRS 501(c)3, non-profit charity organization which donates to boxing-related and
Nevada causes.

Mike Keta new EPBC middleweight champion Keta knocks out Mikheil Khutsishvili in Munich

German middleweight contender Mike Keta stopped Mikheil Khutsishvili from Georgia in seven rounds on Saturday in Munich to claim the vacant EPBC middleweight championship. 1,000 fans at sold out Kickboxen-Deutschland-Gym saw an all-action fight from the opening bell in which both fighters had their moments.

Keta had the better start putting a lot of pressure on Khutsishvili connecting with hard right hooks. But the 25-year-old Georgian didn’t back up and kept on fighting back landing some good shots of his own throughout the fight.

Both guys went toe to toe exchanging hard hands. In the third round Keta dropped Khutsishvili with a nice combination. But the Georgian beat the count and came back strong. Keta seemed to run a little out of gas in the six round and Khutsishvili landed some hard hands. But the 31-year-old German came back in the seventh and floored his opponent with a hard hook to the liver. Khutsishvili tried to beat the count again but was unable to continue.

“It was a great fight by two great warriors”, said promoter Jonny Keta after the bout. “It was an epic battle. Mike did a great job and deserved the win. But his opponent was very strong, too, and definitely wanted to take the belt home to Georgia.”

With this victory Keta crowned himself the first ever EPBC middleweight champion. The Eurasian Pacific Boxing Council has been founded this year to strengthen the cooperation between Europe, Asia and the Pacific region. The regional federation is officially affiliated with the WBC.

Arthur Abraham to defend WBO Super Middleweight title against Paul Smith on September 27 in Kiel, Germany

arthur_abraham
”King” Arthur Abraham (40-4, 28 KOs) will defend his WBO World Super Middleweight crown against Paul Smith (35-3, 20 KOs) on September 27 at the Sparkassen-Arena in Kiel, Germany.

Following a unanimous points victory over Nikola Sjekola in May, Abraham will be making a second defence of the WBO title he regained in a thrilling third encounter with Robert Stieglitz, and the reigning champion is relishing a return to Kiel having previously enjoyed success at the Sparkassen-Arena.

”This will be my fourth ring appearance in Kiel,” said Abraham. ”I have won here three times before, two of them by knockout. My fight on September 27 will be the first time I’ve defended my WBO Super Middleweight belt here and there is no way I am going to lose. I will retain my World Championship and continue my winning streak at the Sparkassen-Arena.”

Looking to end Abraham’s streak is former British Champion Paul Smith. The 31 year-old has impressed at domestic level and risen up the WBO rankings to earn his first World title shot.

”I am thrilled that the fight with Arthur Abraham has been confirmed,” said Smith. ”Arthur is a great champion, a real gentleman and a brilliant ambassador for the sport. I do believe that our styles will make for a great fight, but I just think that I am getting him at the right time. I know I can beat him and have seen things in him that I can capitalise on. I am sure it will be a spectacular show and I’m proud to be fighting for a World title over in Germany.”

Said promoter Kalle Sauerland: ”We are delighted to announce this World Championship fight between ”King” Arthur Abraham and Paul Smith. There is a lot on the line for both men and I am sure this will make for a great spectacle on September 27. Smith has been waiting a long time for this opportunity and I fully expect him to do everything he possibly can to cause an upset. However he is facing a dangerous Abraham, a hungry, in form Abraham who is looking to cement his position, alongside the very best, at the top of the Super Middleweight division.”

Smith’s promoter Eddie Hearn shares Sauerland’s enthusiasm for the Super Middleweight clash and calls upon his fighter’s travelling fan base to support their man in Kiel.

”This is a huge opportunity for Paul and one that he and his trainer Joe Gallagher asked me to deliver for them,” said Hearn. ”The two styles blend well, it’s going to be a cracking fight and UK fans should head to Kiel on September 27 with a number of other Matchroom fighters on the bill. Domestically the Super Middleweight division is red hot right now and Paul has the chance to gatecrash the World scene in Germany.”

Tickets for the WBO World Super Middleweight Championship fight between Arthur Abraham and Paul Smith go on sale tomorrow (Monday July 21) and are available via eventim.de.

Ellison ready for Prime Time against Luis on July 25 on Sho Box

Nutley, NJ (July 19, 2014)–Undefeated Jr. Lightweight Wanzell Ellison will be moving up in weight to take on Tony Luis (17-2, 7 KO’s) as part of a televised quadrupleheader next Friday night at the Turning Stone Casino Resort in Verona, New York in a bout that will be televised live on Sho Box: The New Generation.

The show is promoted by GH3 Promotions and Greg Cohen Promotions and is sponsored by Modell’s Sporting Goods.

The special telecast will be the 200th anniversary show

Ellison of Newark, New Jersey will risk his undefeated mark that reads 11-0-1 with five knockouts. Not only will be Ellison be moving up in weight but he will be making his national television debut against an opponent that he does not know much about.

“All I know he is from Canada,” said Ellison. “He had a good amateur career but I don’t care to watch much tape. I am ready, in shape, comfortable and confident.”

Ellison is looking forward to being able to showcase his talents in front of a national television audience.

“I am excited about being on television. The world will be to see who I am but I am calm and composed and in the fight I know I have to take my time.”

Ellison was very eager for the opportunity that he moved up in weight but he says this maybe only a one-time thing as a Lightweight.

“I am just fighting at 135 lbs. for this fight. It is not a big deal for me as I spar bigger guys anyway.”

Ellison is not concerned that Luis has faced tough competition as the 25-year old believes in his own skills.

“I have to go in there and I can adjust to anything he shows. I have a lot of amateur fights and I know I am in shape. I have been boxing since I was 11-years old, so this is nothing new to me. I am going to show the world something spectacular.”

Not known as a huge puncher, Ellison is very confident that he can get Luis out before the final bell.

“I am not looking for the knockout but I am predicting one. It will come naturally because I am not looking for it.”, finished Ellison.

The card is packed top to bottom as in the main event, undefeated Antoine Douglas (14-0, 9 KO’s) of Burke, VA will take on former world title challenger Michele Soro (23-1, 13 KO’s) of France in a 10-round fight for the WBA International title.

Jerry Odom (11-0, 10 KO’s) of Bowie, MD battle Vilier Quinoez (8-0, 5 KO’s) of Miami, FL for the Interim WBC FECARBOX Super Middleweight title scheduled for 8-rounds.

OFF-TV will see Super Featherweight Jorge Diaz (17-3, 10 KO’s) of New Brunswick, NJ take on an opponent to be named in a 6-round bout.

Samuel Teah (4-0, 2 KO’s) of Philadelphia will fight Lavisas Williams (4-0-1, 3 KO’s) of Rochester, NY in a 4-round Super Featherweight bout featuring undefeated fighters.

Featherweight Glenn Durzum of Maryland will make his pro debut against NyCedric Ellis (0-1) of Ohio in a 4-round Featherweight bout.

Sergio ‘Maravilla’ Martinez Decides to Continue Boxing Career

Sergio Martinez
After lengthy discussions with members of his team, now-former WBC Middleweight Champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez has decided to continue his boxing career.

Determined to return and erase the terrible memory of what happened against fellow-great Miguel Cotto in June, 39-year-old Martinez will next face a top-10 contender with the goal of recapturing his world title.

“Miguel De Pablos (Business Manager) and I met with Sergio at his home in Madrid and he says he is 100% healthy and ready to do what it takes to return to the very top of boxing,” said Martinez advisor Sampson Lewkowicz.

Lewkowicz says Martinez will first undergo a full battery of head-to-toe testing from top specialists in New York, but pending full medical clearance, the former champion will be returning to the ring on a mission.

“Against Cotto, Sergio was badly hurt in the opening round from the first left hook that landed,” continued Lewkowicz, “after that, he remembers only pieces and had very little control of his body and especially his legs. He fought entirely on instinct. It was the worst night of his entire career and he is coming back to prove he is a superstar fighter who just had a bad night.”

Martinez (51-3-2, 28 KOs) had been favored to defeat the smaller Cotto when the pair met last month at Madison Square Garden. But one monstrous Cotto left hook a minute into the fight led to three first-round knockdowns and an eventual 10-round stoppage loss.

While many speculated that Martinez’s previously injured knee had affected the southpaw’s normally cat-like agility in the fight, Lewkowicz says it was not the case.

“He got caught with an unexpected punch and it disconnected his body. It happens in boxing, especially against a puncher like Miguel Cotto. If you look at the tape of the fight, look how slow his hands were. A bad knee doesn’t cause your hands to slow. It was clear it was not the real Sergio in the ring that night.”

Lou DiBella of DiBella Entertainment, who will continue as Martinez’s promoter, says a great fighter like Martinez deserves the benefit of the doubt if he still feels he can compete at an elite level.

“Obviously June 7 was a terrible night in the ring for Sergio Martinez,” said the always outspoken DiBella. “But he says he can still do it and that he’s totally committed to winning back his title, so I stand behind him. He’s already come back to do great things after a stoppage loss to Antonio Margarito earlier in his career and he’s positive he can do it again. So we’re going to put him in with someone who can get him in line for a title shot and see what he can do. If he doesn’t look to be the same fighter anymore, I will be the first to admit it, but he deserves the chance to prove it was just an off-night in an otherwise stellar career.”

No opponent or return date have yet been finalized, but an announcement will be made in the near future.

POUND-FOR-POUND STAR RIGONDEAUX BLASTS SANTA CRUZ AND MARTINEZ FOR REFUSING WORLD TITLE UNIFICATION AS HE BATTLES KOKIETGYM LIVE ON BOXNATION

Guillermo Rigondeaux
LONDON (July 18) – Super-bantamweight kingpin Guillermo Rigondeaux has blasted the other recognised champions in the division for refusing to fight him.

The reigning WBA Super and WBO world champion is set to battle the cultured Sod Kokietgym in Macao this Saturday, live on BoxNation, but has taken the opportunity on the eve of the fight to take a pop at the other leading names in the 122-pound weight class.

The 33-year-old is not happy with current WBC champion Leo Santa Cruz and IBF hotshot Kiko Martinez for turning down the opportunity of a unification clash to determine the undisputed number one in the division.

“I am frustrated that the two other champions in my division – Leo Santa Cruz and Kiko Martinez – will not step up to fight me in title unifications to determine the true world champion. I do not understand that mindset,” said Rigondeaux.

“How do you not want to prove you are the best? I do. Nonito Donaire did when we fought in our title unification battle in New York last year. The fans deserve better from Santa Cruz and Martinez. The media should be holding them accountable.

“A real champion fights and accepts the challenges from the best in his division. Back in the day, world champions accepted the top challenges.

“I get criticised by the media for my style of fighting. Maybe the media should be criticising the champions who deny the fights boxing fans crave?,” bemoaned Rigondeaux.

Martinez is set to face Irish sensation Carl Frampton next up, another fight live and exclusive on BoxNation, with Santa Cruz pencilled in to fight on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather’s rematch with Marcos Maidana.

Rigondeaux, however, has to come through a tough test of his own before he can look to unify the belts when he takes on Kokietgym, a two-time world title challenger who is on a nine-year, 37-fight unbeaten streak.

The Cuban, regarded as one of the world’s best pound-for-pound fighters, has refused to overlook the dangerous Thai and has been hard at work in the gym preparing for this weekend.

“I had a 10-week training camp with George Rubio where we focused on honing my combinations and power punching. I am taking nothing for granted with Kokietgym. He has an impressive record and he is a smart fighter,” said Rigondeaux.

“Hard training and discipline are my greatest assets as a fighter. I am dedicated to being the best boxer in the world and perfecting my technique. I am always the last man out of the gym in training camp. I never weigh more than 129 pounds between fights,” he said.

The two-time Olympic gold medalist, with an unmatched amateur background, has promised to push the action more in this fight after claims that his style wasn’t the most fan-friendly.

“I plan to be more aggressive to be more impressive,” said Rigondeaux. “But let me make this clear, I have been a world champion and an Olympic gold medalist for one reason – I do not make mistakes in the ring. I fight my fight, not my opponents’ fights. In baseball, great hitters do not swing at bad pitches,” he said.

With his defence amongst the very best, Rigondeaux believes he can dominate for many years to come.

“I feel great and I think I can keep fighting at this elite level for many more years because I have never taken any punishment in the ring,”

Rigondeaux said. Rigondeaux vs. Kokietgym is live on BoxNation (Sky 437/490HD & Virgin 546) this Saturday at 2pm. Visit www.boxnation.com to subscribe.

GOLOVKIN — GEALE MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT

Gennady Golovkin
TOM LOEFFLER: We are definitely excited about this event. I would like to thank some of the partners that we have for this event. Gary Shaw was very instrumental as Daniel Geale’s promoter for which we have a great-co-feature for this card at Madison Square Garden, the World’s Most Famous Arena, the Mecca of Boxing. We are very excited to be going into the big room for this fight. Without HBO and their financial support, we wouldn’t be able to put an event like this together. This is clearly the biggest test, the biggest name and the most experienced person that has been willing to get in the ring with Gennady, so far in his career. Geale is a two-time world champion – he won two world championship titles over in Germany, which is not the easiest thing to do. He beat two great fighters in Sturm and Stieglitz and the credentials he brings to the ring are impressive. We want to thank Gary and Team Geale for accepting the challenge. Gennady has been labeled as the fastest rising star in boxing and brings excitement every time he gets into the ring.

GARY SHAW: I would like to thank Tom and K2 who have been wonderful partners. As everyone know we had a cancelled fight in May due to an injury to Mike Perez, but everything has been rescheduled at the Mecca of Boxing, Madison Square Garden and it doesn’t get any bigger than that. I also want to thank HBO on behalf of Team Geale. Graham Shaw, Geale’s trainer is a man of few words and has been with Daniel for about 5 years and has two world title wins in Germany. He’s a great trainer but a lot of people in the United States don’t know him because most of his work is in Australia but I can tell you he is up there with the best of them. As far as Abel Sanchez, I know him personally and have the world of respect for him. He’s a great trainer, does a great job in Big Bear, and Gennady is lucky to have him. As far as Gennady goes, we respect him and his power – he is a great champion and a great person out of the ring, as is Daniel Geale and that’s what makes this fight so great. We have two great fighters willing to fight one another. Daniel Geale has always told me he has wanted to fight Gennady, we never ducked Gennady, but due to the pay-per-view in Australia we were unable to schedule until now. Now the fight is on and it’s a wonderful double-header with Bryant Jennings and Mike Perez as the opening fight and rarely do you get an opening fight with two heavyweights who are undefeated and a final eliminator for the WBC to fight the winner of Stiverne and Wilder. Daniel Geale has wanted this fight, he is very confident in his own abilities and his ability to win this fight.

DANIEL GEALE: Thanks Gary, that was nice. I would like to say that I am really excited to be fighting on such a big show at Madison Square Garden. It is going to be a perfect step for me, fighting a guy like Gennady, who is one of the hottest names in boxing today. I’ve been saying for years in Australia – I will fight the best fighters and this is the only way to do it. To do it like this, in Madison Square Garden, with my team and Gary Shaw, I couldn’t be happier.

TOM LOEFFLER: I would like to touch on the co-feature we have, the eliminator for the WBC heavyweight title, really could stand on it’s own as a main event. That’s why we are excited about this being a great HBO double-header. Bryant Jennings is from Philadelphia, is very marketable and will bring a lot of fans with him. This will be Perez’ third time on HBO and he is also undefeated. It’s only a main event like this that we can make that fight a co-feature.

ABEL SANCHEZ: We are extremely happy that we are in the last week of training. Gennady can’t wait to get in the ring. I’m sure Danny will be well prepared working with Graham – I think he’s a great coach. This will be the first time that Gennady has had so much time off between fights but he is chomping to get in the ring. We are looking forward to going to Madison Square Garden and putting on a great show.

TOM LOEFFLER: Now I would like to introduce the WBA & IBO Middleweight Champion. He has the highest knockout ratio of any world champion today. This will be his third time at Madison Square Garden and his 5th time appearing on HBO, and we are excited to bring Gennady back to the USA for his fans.

GENNADY GOLOVKIN: Thanks Tom, It is very important for me. I respect Daniel Geale very much. I have been watching his fights and I know it is not going to be an easy fight. This is going to be a great show. The heavyweights – that is a great fight. I am looking forward to coming back to Madison Square Garden on July 26.

What is it that you see in Gennady Golovkin, who is 29-0 with 26 KOs, that makes you want to fight him so bad?

DANIEL GEALE: To be honest, Gennady has got titles and I want titles. That’s my main goal here. I want to fight the best fighters and I want to win some titles and there is only one way to do that, whether he has a great record or not. You have to get in there and test yourself against the best fighters in the world.

What fights have you watched and what makes you think this is not going to be an easy fight?

GENNADY GOLOVKIN: Daniel is a great fighter. I have watched his tapes, and the last fight in particular, makes me realize this is not going to be an easy fight.

You fought Gennady in the amateurs?

DANIEL GEALE: Yes, the fight was in 2001. I don’t remember a lot about the fight but I kind of believe I got put down in that fight, but that was a long time ago and now we both believe we are better fighters these days and that’s why it’s going to be a good fight now.

The other two middleweight champions have boxed with Daniel and have predicted he will beat Gennady if he sticks to the right fight plan. What is the right fight plan?

GRAHAM SHAW: Well, without giving too much away, if Daniel fights his absolute best, and that is how he’s looked in the gym – the best he has ever looked. If he fights his best, he beats Gennady’s best. But we’ll see on the night.

You have said you rank Gennady behind Sugar Ray Robinson and Bernard Hopkins as far as middleweights go. What kind of a statement do you think Gennady needs to make in this fight?

ABEL SANCHEZ: Ranking him behind the two people that you just mentioned, we hope to get the kind of fights that would showcase him to prove that statement that I made. He definitely needs to fight Daniel in the same manner as some of the past opponents. But Danny possesses the ability to go 12 rounds and I think that is going to be the big issue – to see if he can control a man and dominate a man that is used to going 12 rounds. For Daniel to go to Germany to win those two world titles says a lot about Daniel and we’ve got a fight on our hands to propel him to that level that I told you about.

What glimpses of greatness did you see in the Curtis Stevens fight?

ABEL SANCHEZ: What I saw in the Curtis Stevens fight was somewhat of a Hagler composure. Curtis upset him because of some of the antics he was doing on social media and Gennady was able to keep his composure and be patient and punish Curtis because of some of the things he had been saying. All of those pluses that he has in comparing him to Hagler and Leonard and Sugar Ray Robinson, they will all be seen in time as he fights great fighters like he is fighting on the 26th.

What fights do you see for Gennady assuming he gets past this fight?

TOM LOEFFLER: It’s my job as Gennady’s promoter to look forward and to plan ahead. No one on our team is underestimating what Daniel Geale brings to the table. He is clearly Gennady’s biggest challenge to date. That being said, if everything goes the right way on July 26 for Gennady, it is still my job to strategize ahead of time. Certainly with Cotto and his big win against Sergio Martinez to win the WBC title, certainly moves him to the top of our list. There were talks about a Chavez fight before and that didn’t come to fruition. Gennady is up for fighting anybody – any of the big names. If it is a compelling fight or if it is a PPV, Gennady would move up or down. If he beats Daniel on the 26th, then the priority would be to unify the middleweight titles, but no one is underestimating Daniel by any stretch of the imagination.

GARY SHAW: I wouldn’t look past July 26 if I were you.

What qualities will Gennady bring out of you?

DANIEL GEALE: To be honest, Gennady is the type of guy, he’s got a powerful punch and everyone knows about his skills to back that up. You can’t be one-dimensional in any way because he will find a hole. To me, that is good because I have to improve and I have to step up and fight at my best. Normally when I do fight great fighters, I step up and fight better as well. In this case I am going to make that happen.

Where does Gennady feel that he gets his power from?

GENNADY GOLOVKIN: It comes from hard work every day on my speed and my timing coming all-together for the power. The timing is very important. I am not a body builder – it is natural power, it’s original.

Do you feel the big fights you have been in will help you?

DANIEL GEALE: Yes it definitely, I have been in big fights before. On big occasions and have had a big crowd against me in those situations as well. Those experiences will serve me well in this fight. Being the underdog as well is something that I am used to.

Do you believe Daniel Geale poses your most difficult fight to date?

GENNADY GOLOVKIN: Yes absolutely because he has a specific style. He has proved that in his fights and it will be difficult to solve.

You lost two close fights in the US – do you feel a need to win more convincingly to get the decision to go in your favor?

DANIEL GEALE: It’s always tricky in close fights. You want to be as convincing as possible for decisions to go your way and sometimes they don’t. That makes you who you are. Those close losses, although they were disappointing, they did push me on to train harder and want to achieve more. I didn’t feel as if I was beaten in either of those two fights, so it just motivated me to train harder. There is always going to be bad decisions in boxing – you can’t let that affect you in any way. You just have to go out and do your job to the best of your ability.

What about your style will give Gennady trouble?

DANIEL GEALE: I would like to say that my defense is usually pretty good so I am going to be making the most of that – not giving him an easy target to aim at.

Has Gennady’s training evolved over the years?

ABEL SANCHEZ: His style and his progression has evolved, as I outlined to him when we started working together. I asked him for some time and dedication and discipline and I promised him I would make him into what he is today.

Does he still have the hunger since he has trouble getting big fights?

ABEL SANCHEZ: As far as his dedication and wanting to fight…I think the fact that when he goes home, and when he does, he forgets about boxing when he’s with his family. Then when there is a fight scheduled eight or nine weeks out he comes up to Big Bear and completely submerges himself in the training in preparation for a fight that is going to keep him hungry. As long as he separates those two I think he is going to be tough to deal with because he is going to be so committed to what he is doing that the skills and the power and a tough fight like Daniel will be fresh for him.

Daniel, last time you were on American TV, you dropped Barker but lost the decision. How do you recover from that?

DANIEL GEALE: Firstly, the Barker fight was frustrating – knocking him down in the 6th and not getting the decision, but you have to take it on the chin and come back from that. I didn’t dwell on it too long. I got back in the gym and now I am on a huge show again fighting for a world title. I am coming over to the US trying to turn it around to get on the winning side of things. This next fight with Gennady is at a huge venue, Madison Square Garden and it is for titles, couldn’t be any more than I want.

How are ticket sales and what do you consider a success for this fight?

TOM LOEFFLER: Tickets are tracking very well. The Garden is happy with the sales. It has gotten a great response ever since we announced it. Having a fight like this with Gennady defending the titles and Daniel, who has been on HBO before and brings credibility and the co-feature gives this event a life of it’s own. Right now it is scaled to the lower bowl, so including the suites it is about 11,000 total, which is a big jump up from Gennady’s last time at the Theater against Curtis Stevens and we are expecting a great turnout.

Do you feel any added pressure fighting in the big room?

GENNADY GOLOVKIN: I’m so happy to be back at Madison Square Garden and to be in the big arena this time. I am excited about the fight as well as fighting Daniel and the whole thing is just amazing.

TOM LOEFFLER: I might add that this may be the first time that a headliner for a Garden boxing event will also appear in a Broadway play in the same week – Gennady will be appearing at Rocky.

Do you feel if the fight goes long you will have an advantage?

DANIEL GEALE: Gennady’s fitness…I’m sure he is training very hard for this fight. If it does go the distance or even to the later rounds, we are not thinking it is going to be much easier in that respect. I am going out there expecting the best fighter that he can be and I am just going to go out there and do my thing. I have been the distance with plenty of great fighters in world title fights so I have that experience. If it’s an advantage I am definitely going to make the most of it but we are expecting Golovkin to be strong later in the fight.

ABEL SANCHEZ: Every fight that we have fought for titles could have gone the distance. We prepare for 12 in every fight. Our game plan has to be a little modified so as to not let Daniel get comfortable in the early rounds because Daniel is a volume puncher. Of course we are aware of the fact that Daniel is used to going 12-rounds and is used to throwing a lot of punches in every round. We know his conditioning is going to be great.

How do you feel about opponents avoiding you?

GENNADY GOLOVKIN: I don’t think much about this, but I heard my team was planning this upcoming fight and I knew it was difficult to get fighters, but that is basically all I heard and I don’t think much about it.

How has sparring with George Groves gone with Gennady?

ABEL SANCHEZ: Sparring went very well with George. George is a high-caliber fighter. He gave us some great work but he was just one of five sparring partners we had in this camp. George fought three or four days with Gennady and four rounds each day so he helped us and we appreciated it very much.

How do you mentally prepare for a boxer such as Gennady who has so much power?

DANIEL GEALE: That’s a good question. Mentally I have been preparing for the toughest fight of my life. It’s going to be a tough fight against a very tough fighter. I put in a very difficult training camp. I feel since the Macklin fight fell through – things were looking great then, and now they have stepped up again. I have been confident throughout and I have been wanting to fight Gennady for a while. I believe that things happen for a reason and we are very excited about that.

In closing…

TOM LOEFFLER: Not only will this fight be broadcast on HBO but it will be televised live in over 100 countries. I know it is on PPV in Australia for Danny so it brings a lot of interest worldwide. The four fighters are all in the prime of their careers – that’s what makes these match-ups so compelling.

GARY SHAW: I think it’s great for boxing that two great fighters are willing to fight each other and in the co-feature, two great heavyweights willing to fight each other. It’s going to be a fans’ fight and it’s great to be a part of it. July 26 is going to be a great night and Daniel Geale will be victorious

GUILLERMO RIGONDEAUX PROMISES “FIREWORKS” FOR WORLD TITLE DEFENSE

Rigondeaux_Agbeko _131207_003a
MACAU, CHINA (July 18, 2014) – Undefeated unified junior featherweight world champion and Cuban sensation GUILLERMO “El Chacal” RIGONDEAUX (13-0, 8 KOs), of Miami, Florida, has promised to provide “a lot of fireworks” when he defends his titles against Top-Five contender and two-time world title challenger SOD LOOKNONGYANTOY (63-2-1, 27 KOs), of Srithep, Thailand, This Saturday! July 19, at The Venetian® Macao’s Cotai Arena. Rigondeaux will need them if he is to derail the “Looknongyantoy Express,” who enters this fight riding a nine-year, 37-bout unbeaten streak.

Promoted by Top Rank® and Sands China Ltd., in association with Tecate, All Star Boxing, Caribe Promotions and Foreman Boys Promotions, the Rigondeaux vs. Looknongyangtov world junior featherweight championship fight will be televised via same-day delay as the main event of Solo Boxeo Tecate on UniMás, beginning at 11:00 p.m. ET/PT.

GUILLERMO RIGONDEAUX
“I had a 10-week training camp with George Rubio where we focused on honing my combinations and power punching. I am taking nothing for granted with Looknongyantoy. He has an impressive record and he is a smart fighter.

“I intend to give UniMás and its boxing audience a great show. I plan to be more aggressive to be more impressive. But let me make this clear, I have been a world champion and an Olympic gold medalist for one reason – I do not make mistakes in the ring. I fight my fight, not my opponents’ fights. In baseball, great hitters do not swing at bad pitches.

“Hard training and discipline are my greatest assets as a fighter. I am dedicated to being the best boxer in the world and perfecting my technique. I am always the last man out of the gym in training camp. I never weigh more than 129 pounds between fights.

“I feel great and I think I can keep fighting at this elite level for many more years because I have never taken any punishment in the ring.

“I am frustrated that the two other champions in my division – Leo Santa Cruz and Kiko Martinez – will not step up to fight me in title unifications to determine the true world champion. I do not understand that mindset. How do you not want to prove you are the best? I do. Nonito Donaire did when we fought in our title unification battle in New York last year. The fans deserve better from Santa Cruz and Martinez. The media should be holding them accountable. A real champion fights and accepts the challenges from the best in his division. Back in the day, world champions accepted the top challenges. I get criticized by the media for my style of fighting. Maybe the media should be criticizing the champions who deny the fights boxing fans crave?”

SOD LOOKNONGYANTOY
“I have eight years of Muay Thai fighting experience, including over 400 victories. That has helped me to become a good boxer. I bring vast experience and intelligence.

“I trained hard for this fight. I trained to fight the perfect fight because that is what it will take to beat Rigondeaux. I do not fear him.

“I am up to the challenge. I am prepared to defeat Rigondeaux. I am ready to become world champion.”

Remaining tickets for the Rigondeaux vs. Looknongyangtov world junior featherweight championship event can be purchased via Cotai Ticketing™. Prices start at HKD/MOP 80, with ferry and hotel packages also available.

Rigondeaux (13-0, 8 KOs), of Miami, Florida, one of boxing’s top pound for pound fighters, returns to the ring making his 2014 debut. Last year he unified the World Boxing Association (WBA) and World Boxing Organization (WBO) 122-pound titles by defeating 2012 Fighter of the Year Nonito Donaire on April 13, 2013, at a sold-out Radio City Music Hall in New York. Rigondeaux thoroughly dominated Donaire via a unanimous decision victory, ending the Filipino Flash’s 12-year, 30-bout winning streak, as well as claiming his WBO junior featherweight title. Rigondeaux had a stellar amateur career, winning Olympic gold medals in 2004 and 2000, World Amateur Championship titles in 2005 and 2001, and Pan American Games gold medals in 2005 and 2003, all at 119 pounds, before leaving Cuba to embark on a professional career which began in Miami in 2009. In only his seventh professional fight where both fighters scored knockdowns, Rigondeaux captured the WBA interim super bantamweight title, winning a tough split decision over the vastly more experienced former world champion Ricardo Cordoba in 2010. After successfully defending the interim title in 2011 with a first-round knockout of previously undefeated former European super bantamweight champion Willie Casey, Rigondeaux won the WBA world super bantamweight championship with a sixth-round knockout of previously undefeated defending champion Rico Ramos, January 20, 2012. Rigondeaux has successfully defended that title four times since then, blasting out once-beaten Teon Kennedy in the fifth round, which included Kennedy suffering five knockdowns en route to the loss, and winning a dominant unanimous decision over once-beaten contender Roberto Marroquin, both in 2012, besting Donaire in their April 2013 title unification fight and most recently, defeating former two-time world champion Joseph Agbeko, December 7 via a dominant unanimous decision.

Looknongyantoy (63-2-1, 27 KOs), of Srithep, Thailand, has twice challenged for the WBO junior featherweight title, losing to Daniel De Leon both times, in 2005 and 2006. Since then he has fashioned a nine -year, 37-bout unbeaten streak, which has included Asian, WBO Asia-Pacific and WBA Pan Asian 122-pound title victories. Possessing a style that features good skills and movement, he is currently world-rated No. 5 by the WBO and No. 10 by the WBA.

NEW YORK (July 18, 2014) – Last Saturday’s SHOWTIME PPV® event headlined by Canelo Alvarez and Erislandy Lara will premiere on SHOWTIME this Saturday at 9 p.m. ET/PT, immediately followed by the premiere of ALL ACCESS: Canelo vs. Lara Epilogue.

The SHOWTIME premiere of Canelo vs. Lara will also include last Saturday’s thrilling showdown between Juan Manuel Lopez and Francisco Vargas, which featured a Round of the Year candidate.

Canelo won a split decision at the sold-out MGM Grand, but the debate of who deserved the nod in the Mexico vs. Cuba showdown didn’t end after ring announcer Jimmy Lennon Jr. read the judges’ scorecards.

“The fight felt as close as the numbers indicated.” – Chris Mannix, Sports Illustrated

Most experts agree that many of the rounds were “toss ups,” but will their opinion change the second time around? Re-watch and re-score the fight yourself this Saturday to formulate your own opinion on the boxer vs. puncher matchup.

ALL ACCESS: Canelo vs. Lara Epilogue, the third and final installment of this edition of the SHOWTIME Sports EMMY® Award winning series, offers viewers a glimpse into the drama of fight night from a unique perspective and lifts the curtain on the rarely seen aftermath of world championship prizefighting.

Epilogue takes viewers inside the ropes and chronicles the intense events surrounding a marquee boxing event like no other show on television. From jubilation to heartbreak, ALL ACCESS grants you locker room access to capture the emotions following the razor close – and somewhat controversial – decision.

HEAVYWEIGHT SPECIAL ATTRACTION ADDED TO UPCOMING BROADWAY BOXING KING SPORTS’ UNDEFEATED AND WORLD-RATED AMERICAN HEAVYWEIGHT HOPEFUL CHARLES MARTIN TAKES ON KERTSON MANSWELL NEXT WEDNESDAY, JULY 23 AT B.B. KING BLUES CLUB & GRILL NYC

New York, NY (7/18/14) – Next Wednesday, July 23, at NYC’s famed B.B. King Blues Club and Grill, DiBella Entertainment (DBE) will return with another edition of its popular and long-running Broadway Boxing series.

The already-stacked card got an even bigger boost this week when undefeated American heavyweight hopeful Charles Martin (17-0-1, 15KO’s) was added to the event. Martin, who is promoted by Michael King’s King Sports is set to see action against Kertson Manswell (24-8, 18KO’s) in a 10-round heavyweight special attraction.

The skilled 28-year-old southpaw Martin was the 2012 National PAL champion, as well as the 2012 National Golden Gloves runner-up, before turning pro later that same year in October. Martin has thus far kept up a blistering pace, fighting three times in 2012, 11 times in 2013, and has already fought four times this year. Martin holds impressive victories over previously undefeated prospects Vincent Thompson (13-0), Glendy Hernandez (10-0) and most recently Alexander Flores (14-0). The bout against Flores, which Martin won by fourth-round knockout, was for the vacant WBO NABO heavyweight title and moved Murray into the #7 spot in the WBO world ratings. Martin is also rated in the IBF at #15. All of Martin’s 15 career knockouts have come in four rounds or less. The hard-hitting Missouri-native will be looking to score another impressive victory as he continues to move up the heavyweight ladder, when he squares off against the former fringe contender Manswell on Wednesday night.

Headlining what promises to be a thrilling night of action on July 23 will be Ireland’s Patrick “The Punisher” Hyland (27-1, 12KO’s) facing Noel Echevarria (11-3, 6KO’s) in an eight-round junior lightweight matchup.

Also featured on the card in separate bouts will be two exciting middleweights from the DBE roster. Former world title challenger Avtandil Khurtsidze (27-2-2, 16KO’s) will make his eagerly awaited return to the ring following an extended absence due to VISA and promotional issues. Ukrainian amateur standout and 2008 Olympian Sergey Derevyanchenko will make his much-anticipated debut in a six-round bout. Derevyanchenko is one of the best amateurs to ever come out of the storied Ukrainian amateur boxing program, compiling an astonishing 390-20 record in the process.

Local fighters appearing on the card will be DiBella Entertainment-promoted Long Islanders, light heavyweight Joe Smith (15-1, 12KO’s) and junior middleweight Patrick Day (7-0-1, 4KO’s). A rematch of a barnburner that occurred last February will round out the event with Danny Gonzalez (5-0-1, 3KO’s), of Queens, NY, facing Ray Velez (3-4-1, 1KO) in a six-round welterweight matchup.

Minnesota’s Caleb Truax Out for Redemption against Derek Ennis on Friday, July 25, at UIC Pavilion in Chicago

WBA #15, IBF #13, and WBO #11-rated Caleb “Golden” Truax (23-1-2, 14 KOs) of Osseo, Minnesota, admits he didn’t look so great in his last fight.

Paired up against notorious spoiler Ossie Duran in January of this year, live worldwide on ESPN Friday Night Fights, Truax’s red-hot streak of victories came to a screeching halt, as he struggled to earn even a draw after 10 tough rounds.

“I don’t want to make excuses; I just had an off night,” said Truax. “I didn’t fight very well. Ossie Duran is tough, but I should have beaten him convincingly. I just didn’t. It’s my job with this fight to prove it was a fluke and that I’m a better fighter than that. And I will.”

30-year-old Truax will get the chance to redeem himself and restart his career momentum when he takes on former USBA Junior Middleweight Champion Derek “Pooh” Ennis (24-4-1, 13 KOs) in the co-main event of “Conquerors”, a night of ESPN Friday Night Fights boxing on Friday, July 25, 2014, at Chicago’s UIC Pavilion.

Truax says he’s not relying just on hope that his performance against Ennis will be stronger. He’s changed up his training regimen and lifestyle to help make sure.

“I made a few adjustments since my last camp and have started working with a personal trainer and nutritionist, so I’ll be a heathier as far as diet and have more energy when the fight comes around this time. It was a chance thing. I was preparing for the last fight and this guy, Josh Hutton, is someone I have mutual friends with in my hometown of Osseo. He ran into me in the gym and said he could help me out as far as nutrition goes and putting some science behind the things I’m doing. Me and my trainer, Tom Halstad, already did a lot of the same things, but he put some science behind it and it’s been paying dividends as far as strength goes. I’m moving more weight around in the gym and I’ve added more strength training and I’m doing several drills I wouldn’t normally do and it seems to help my energy. And as far as nutrition goes, he’s a real expert on making sure I get the most out of my body.”

Truax says he’s had Ennis in his sights before and is ready, despite him being a substitute for original opponent Porky Medina, who was injured.

“I was supposed to fight him before Ossie Duran and he pulled out with two weeks to go, so I’ve already done quite a bit of studying on him. He’s a slick Philly boxer. He’s tough and he tries to box and use angles and make people miss. It’ll be up to me to take it to him and let him know what it’s like to be under pressure and hopefully what it’s like to be knocked out.

Truax was riding a hot streak before the Duran setback. He looked strong against former world champion Jermain Taylor, even dropping Taylor in the ninth before losing a close decision. He then went on to take out local rivals Matt Vanda and Ceresso Fort and scored a nationally televised stoppage over then highly rated Don George.

The challenge will be to look so good against Ennis that his name starts coming up in discussions of big, televised fights.

“I want the biggest fights possible on Showtime or HBO to challenge myself. It’s all up to my manager, Ron Lyke, and my promoters, when they think I’m ready. I was kind of hoping to get something big after the Duran fight but that didn’t go as planned and I kind of have to get back on track with this fight. I’m ready to do that.”

Presented by Warriors Boxing, 8 Count Productions, Seconds Out Promotions and Marines Promotions, “Conquerors”, will also feature rejuvenated welterweight contender Roberto “La Amenaza” Garcia (35-3, 23 KOs) of Weslaco, Texas, taking on hard-hitting and dangerous Breidis “Khanqueror” Prescott (27-5, 20 KOs) of Miami, via Barranquilla, Colombia in the night’s 10-round main event.

Scheduled to open the night’s worldwide, live broadcast is a light heavyweight six-rounder between Popular Chicago native and Notre Dame graduate Mike Lee (12-0, 7 KOs) and Paul Gonsalves (7-3, 3 KOs) of Hyannis, Massachusetts.

THE “MAYHEM” MARVELS: MAYWEATHER vs. MAIDANA 2 PRESS TOUR WRAPS UP IN LOS ANGELES

Floyd Mayweather
LOS ANGELES (July 17, 2014) – Eleven-time world champion Floyd Mayweather and former welterweight titlist Marcos Maidana held their fifth and final announcement press conference in Pershing Square in Los Angeles, Calif. on Thursday to formally discuss their highly anticipated rematch taking place Saturday, Sept. 13 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, live on SHOWTIME PPV®.

Thursday’s press event in Los Angeles concluded a whirlwind five-city, open-to-the-public promotional tour that saw the fighters visit the boxing hotbeds of New York City, Washington, D.C., Chicago and San Antonio.

With Mayweather speaking at the podium, a member of Maidana’s team was throwing t-shirts into the pro-Argentine crowd in an attempt to take the attention away from Mayweather. Numerous Argentinian flags waved in the air on a picture perfect afternoon that also happened to be Maidana’s 31st birthday.

Grammy-nominated hip-hop artist and Los Angeles native Kendrick Lamar entertained the capacity crowd, which was evenly split for Mayweather and Maidana, prior to the arrival of the World Champion fighters.

Jarrett Stoll and Alec Martinez, two members of the Stanley Cup winning Los Angeles Kings, presented Floyd Mayweather and Marcos Maidana jerseys with “Money” and “Chino” emblazoned on the back at the start of the press conference.

Here’s what the participants had to say on Thursday:

FLOYD MAYWEATHER, Eleven-Time, Five-Division World Champion

“Everything on this media tour has been going great. It was crazy to be able to go to Washington D.C. and hold a press conference at midnight and it still be packed. That shows that boxing is very much alive and has loyal fans.

“I started training last night after the ESPYs at 2 a.m., there is no more partying for me, it’s time to start getting focused on this fight.

“Marcos Maidana is a very, very dirty fighter. In our last fight he had over 10 low blows, head butts. He’s in the wrong sport if he wants to fight a bare knuckle brawl, this is boxing. We are both looking to have careers after boxing; I don’t want to risk my health.

“The reason I chose Maidana for a rematch is because of the fans. The bar is set so high for me, the fans expect so much out of me.

“In past fights I would go out and win all 12 rounds. This is the first time my fans have seen someone win multiple rounds against me.

“To be honest, Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez are better fighters than Maidana. They are better, stronger boxers. With me and Canelo, it was more of a chess match as opposed to Maidana who came at me very dirty and reckless. I knew something crazy was going to happen in our fight, which it did, I got a headbutt.

“Even though we are in a brutal sport, if you beat me, do it the right way. I got here with hard work and dedication and a strong belief in my team. Please don’t cheat to beat me, if you are going to beat me, earn it the hard way.

“I don’t have to make any adjustments going into this fight, but he does. I won the fight. If I spar against someone and they win three of 12 rounds against me, that’s a bad day for me. I am a perfectionist and I set the bar so high. Maidana knows in his heart that he didn’t win.

“I know that if I lost this fight, then I wouldn’t take it again. Maidana isn’t stupid, the reason why he is trying to fight me again is because he is going to make more money fighting me than anyone else, even though he knows he will lose again.”

MARCOS MAIDANA, Former WBA Welterweight World Champion

“The situation with the gloves is an open issue. It hasn’t been closed yet. I’m going to talk to my team, we are going to push for my gloves and he’s probably going to fight back. But we won’t surrender, we’ll keep pushing.

“In our first fight, the glove’ issue affected me a little. But now, I know how he [Mayweather] operates and if he wants different gloves, I’ll have different gloves waiting for him. I’ll bring a few options so I’m not caught off guard again.

“Back in May, I tried to get the attention of the referee in the eighth round because Floyd was fighting very dirty and he didn’t even honor that, he tried to pull a Victor Ortiz shot on me. That’s the type of fighter he is – dirty and sneaky.

“In all of his fights, he [Mayweather] brings his elbows out. He really likes to use his elbows. One of his moves is to put his elbow in the fighter’s throat and the referee for some reason let him get away with it. We all know he [Mayweather] does whatever he wants because he has the judges in his pocket. He is a dirty fighter.

“There were rumors that I got paid to use Floyd’s gloves, but that’s not true. I had to accept his gloves because otherwise there was not going to be a fight. He basically called off the fight if I didn’t use his gloves, so I had to, I had no choice. Unlike him, I had come to fight, not to whine.

“It is no secret that I won the first rounds and he [Mayweather] did better on the last ones. This time around I’m planning to keep up with his rhythm. I’m making adjustments, when he presses I’m going to press him too.

“In my first fight against Floyd, I learned that he’s not that great, he’s not that superhuman boxer everybody talks about. If I wouldn’t have been so anxious looking for the knockout, I would have beat him.

“I think Floyd is going to run around inside the ring. In our first fight, he said he was going to stand up and fight and he didn’t. So, it wouldn’t surprise me if this time around he does the same thing.

“I pushed him in San Antonio because he gets too close to my face.

“I really don’t understand him [Mayweather], so I don’t really care for what he says about me. I know he speaks ill, but I don’t care.”

ROBERT GARCIA, Maidana’s Trainer & 2012 Trainer of the Year

“Mayweather’s been going around saying that Maidana’s a dirty fighter. This is boxing; Maidana finds a way to win.

“If Mayweather believes the first fight was rough, this next fight will be much rougher, believe me.

“I’m bringing somebody new to the training camp. We are starting with basics, running in the morning, timing him. It’s going to be run hard, train hard, eat well and rest. That’s our recipe to win this upcoming fight.

“I’m going to try to bring him into the ring at a different weight this time. Not as heavy. I think that was a mistake on my behalf. Since it was the first time fighting Mayweather, we wanted to take any advantage.

“Floyd is not as strong as we thought, so we are not making that mistake again. Chino would have been a lot faster and a lot stronger if he would have walked into that ring lighter. He would have had the same energy he had in the first six rounds.

“Sixteen years ago, Mayweather and I were both world champions. He mentioned that he would’ve liked to fight me, but we don’t need to do it on pay-per-view. We can take a walk out back and we’ll handle business. I am from Southern California and we know how to handle our business.

“I give Mayweather props for having beautiful women with him. Too bad when they are no longer on payroll they are going to walk away.

“He bet Chino’s purse and we responded by saying we’ll take the bet if Chino can wear his Mexican Everlast gloves. All I need is a handshake from him, but I know I won’t get that.”

SEBASTIAN CONTURSI, Maidana’s Manager

“We will beat Floyd Mayweather, but first I want to thank Floyd. He is a man of his word giving Chino the rematch.

“We need all the Latinos to support Chino on Sept. 13. You guys are the driving force behind his success.”

LEONARD ELLERBE, CEO of Mayweather Promotions

“Mayweather has beat everybody he has faced in the world, everybody. The two fighters will get in there on Sept. 13 and the best fighter will win and we all know who that will be.

“You can’t disrespect Mayweather’s accomplishments. He’s the highest-paid athlete in the world and he leads by example. He is not only going to go down as the best to ever do, but also as the best businessman.

“If you just go out there and beat each other’s brains out then you aren’t going to relate to your kids. Floyd’s a very smart fighter and he’s going to do what he has to do to win the fight.”

ERIC GOMEZ, Senior Vice President, Golden Boy Promotions

“Mayweather and his team have been very professional throughout the tour and they did a great job.

“Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions is committed to making the best fights and this match up is no exception. The first fight was great, close and dangerous. Floyd didn’t have to take this fight, but he wanted to give the fans what they want. I want to thank him for stepping up.”

“Maidana is up to the task of taking on Floyd Mayweather a second time. He [Maidana] is ready to silence any doubters.”

STEPHEN ESPINOZA, Executive Vice President & General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports

“SHOWTIME PPV has become the industry leader in PPV fights. These events keep getting bigger, better and more exciting.

“The first fight between Mayweather and Maidana was one of the most exciting fights in boxing history and the second fight will be even better.

“There is no event like a Mayweather fight with the music and the celebrities. You add to that the ferocity of a hungry fighter like Maidana and you have the recipe for another unforgettable fight.”

“Ref Cam” Featured for First Time on ESPN Friday Night Fights and Noche de Combates

Tomorrow night’s edition of ESPN Friday Night Fights presented by Corona Extra and ESPN Deportes’ Noche de Combates presentado por Corona Extra from the Paramount Theater in Huntington, N.Y. (8 p.m. ET, ESPN2, ESPN Deportes+, WatchESPN), will feature a unique perspective when referees Steve Willis and Pete Santiago wear point-of-view cameras to give viewers a first-person point of view of all the sweat-spraying action inside the ring. The cameras, which will be mounted on both referees using two lapel pins, will be used live and during video replays. This marks the first time that Friday Night Fights and Noche de Combates have ever used a referee camera.

“We are always looking to innovate and provide viewers access to things they cannot have access to themselves,” said Matt Sandulli, senior coordinating producer, ESPN. “This camera will put viewers in the ring and give them a view of the fight that only a limited number of people in the world have ever seen. We’d like to thank the New York Athletic Commission and referees Steve Willis and Pete Santiago for working with us to make this happen.”

“We appreciate ESPN’s introduction of the ‘Ref Cam’ to bring a new dimension to Friday Night Fights,” said David Berlin, executive director, The New York State Athletic Commission. “The New York State Athletic Commission is always working with promoters and networks to advance the sport and welcomes new technology that does not interfere with our regulatory function.”
