Always-busy Falowo ready for next step

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (June 4th, 2014) — Not every fighter scraps the entire playbook following a loss. Some just stay the course.

So when Thomas Falowo stepped back into the ring February for the first time since losing to Chris Chatman in 2013, it was as though nothing had changed. No new game plan. No major adjustments. Just the same win-at-all-costs relentless approach Falowo always brings to the table on fight night.

“After a loss, people think that’s when it’s time to go back to the drawing board [but] I felt I looked better [against Chatman] than I did in my last fight,” Falowo said.

With no hitch in his step, Falowo (11-2, 7 KOs) made quick work of Jaison Palomeque in February, winning by a bizarre disqualification in the third round of a fight Falowo dominated from the opening bell, and now the Pawtucket, R.I., middleweight will return for his second fight of the year against 24-fight veteran Jose Ramirez of New Mexico in a six-round bout Friday, June 6th, 2014 on the undercard of CES Boxing’s “Unstoppable” card at Twin River Casino in Lincoln, R.I.

“I plan on being a lot more active [in 2014],” Falowo said. “This will be my second fight. I hope to get at least two more this one and end the year 4-0.”

With trainer Peter Manfredo Sr. in his corner, anything is possible for Falowo. The loss to Chatman — the first eight-round bout of Falowo’s career — appears to have been nothing more than a minor bump in the road. After disposing of Palomeque, Falowo now has seven knockouts among his 11 wins, an important statistic as he attempts to break into the middleweight rankings and possibly earn some national airtime in the near future.

“It was a must-win for me, especially since it was directly after a loss,” Falowo said of his fight against Palomeque. “I’ve seen too many fighters fall into the opponent category after back-to-back losses, but I don’t plan on losing again anytime soon.”

If he gets through 2014 unscathed, Falowo could soon find himself in contention for a regional title, either in the North American Boxing Federation (NABF), North American Boxing Association (NABA), or another regional sanctioning body with ties to a major organization. The key is stepping up to face bigger, better competition within the next year, which he says he’s ready for.

“I’ve never turned away from a tough fight,” Falowo said. “It’s about that time to take it to the next level where the belts and TV time comes into the picture.”

With more wins comes more opportunities, and, as Falowo said, he’s only as good as his last fight, so the emphasis now is to win and win convincingly every time he steps into that ring. This is a big year that could lead to big things down the road.

“Every time I’m under the lights, I’m there to make a statement,” Falowo said.

Tickets for “Unstoppable” are priced at $41, $76 and $126 (VIP) and can be purchased by calling 401-724-2253/2254, online at www.cesboxing.com or www.ticketmaster.com, or at the Players Club at Twin River. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

The main event of “Unstoppable” features the heavy-hitting Rich Gingras (13-4-1, 8 KOs) of Lincoln, R.I., battling veteran Jaime Velazquez (11-6-2, 2 KOs) of Central Falls, R.I., in an eight-round bout for the vacant New England Light Heavyweight Title.

The undercard features the return of Hyannis, Mass., heavyweight Jesse Barboza (8-1-1, 5 KOs), who will face Jamal Woods (4-11-3, 4 KOs) of Forrest City, Ark., in a four-round bout. Barboza has won four consecutive fights since 2013, including a unanimous-decision win over Glenn Thomas in March. Unbeaten Boston heavyweight Donnie Palmer (4-0-1, 4 KOs) will fight John Orr (1-3) of Kansas City, Mo., in a four-round bout.

Also on the undercard, Springfield, Mass., super middleweight Mike Rodriguez (0-1) will face veteran On’Rey Towns (0-4) of Wilson, N.C., and Willimantic, Conn., light heavyweight Kevin Cobbs (8-1, 2 KOs) will return to the ring just six days after his latest win to take on 17-fight veteran Borngod Washington of Queens, N.Y.

JOSE SNIPER PEDRAZA LOOKS TO SHINE AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN THIS SATURDAY JUNE 7TH

PUERTO RICO (June 4, 2014) – Gary Shaw Productions, Universal Promotions and DiBella Entertainment’s undefeated super-featherweight champion, Jose “Sniper” Pedraza (16-0, 10 KOs), is excited to be fighting on the undercard of Miguel Cotto vs. Sergio Martinez, taking place at the Madison Square Garden in New York on June 7, 2014. Pedraza will battle, Arturo Uruzquieta (15-6, 5 KOs) in a scheduled 6-round bout.

Pedraza, who is Ranked WBC #5, IBF #8, and WBA #8, looks at this fight as a blessing, as Miguel Cotto is someone he’s looked up to growing up as a kid in Puerto Rico. Currently Pedraza is looked at as the number one fighter coming from the island, and seeks to follow in the footsteps of past greats who hailed Puerto Rico.

“Miguel Cotto is one of the best fighters to come out of Puerto Rico and I want to become a household name in my country just like he did,” said Pedraza. “I know with hard work, and the guidance of my promoters, Gary Shaw, Lou DiBella and Javier Bustillo, I can go far in boxing. My ambition is to be the next great champion from Puerto Rico.”

Pedraza’s opponent Arturo Uruzquieta, is coming off two impressive knockout victories. Pedraza expects to see Uruzquieta bring forth a gallant effort, so his mindset is not to look past him.

“I know Uruzquieta is coming to upset me, but I’m not going to let it happen,” continued Pedraza. “I’ve been very sharp in sparring and my body is in great shape. I’m going to display my boxing skills to my fans watching on TV. On Saturday, everyone will see what I’m talking about. I’m taking my career to the next level.”

“Pedraza can do it all,” said Gary Shaw. “He has the ability to adapt to any style and his charisma is second to none, which is why he is loved by his countrymen in Puerto Rico. He’s the next great fighter emerging from the Island.”

Pedraza is a member of “Team Puerto Rico”, which is a collaboration between Gary Shaw Productions, DiBella Entertainment and Universal Promotions, made with the goal of gathering the best of Puerto Rico’s boxing talents.

‘COTTO THINKS I’M PAST IT BUT AGAINST MURRAY I WAS INJURED AND I STILL WON!’ – CHAMPION MARTINEZ BELIEVES PUERTO RICAN GREAT WILL BE KNOCKED OUT THIS SATURDAY

Sergio_Martinez_Rollingstone
LONDON (June 4) – World champion Sergio Martinez believes the only reason Miguel Cotto has chosen to fight him is because he thinks he is over the hill.

The WBC middleweight kingpin puts his title on the line against the Puerto Rican legend at Madison Square Garden in New York, live on BoxNation this Saturday night, with Martinez of the belief that Cotto only took the fight because he believes the Argentine is past his best.

Cotto is attempting to make history by becoming his nation’s first four-weight world champion when he makes the move up to the 160 pound division, but Martinez, who contentiously overcame Britain’s Martin Murray in his last outing, says he is in for a rude awakening.

“Miguel Cotto believes that I am ripe for the picking and that my age has finally caught up with me,” said Martinez. “What he doesn’t realise is that for the Martin Murray fight, I had many injuries going into the fight. I did not want to postpone the event because it was always a dream of mine to defend my title in Argentina so we as a team decided to go forward with the fight with Martin Murray.

“I still came out victorious in that fight but Miguel Cotto thinks I’m on the decline, which is the only reason I believe he chose to face me now,” he said.

‘Maravilla’ Martinez burst onto the elite scene with a stunning second round knockout over the courageous Paul Williams in their rematch back in 2010, after having captured the WBC and WBO middleweight belts against the division’s then number one fighter in Kelly Pavlik.

Having gone onto to establish himself as one of the very best pound-for-pound, Martinez is adamant that Cotto will not hear the final bell when the pair clash in front of a packed house.

“I am extremely motivated for this fight with Cotto. Not just because I don’t necessarily care for Miguel Cotto, but I want to prove him wrong in thinking that I’m not an elite fighter,” said Martinez.

“Miguel Cotto is a good fighter and a future hall of famer, but he will not become the world middleweight champion by defeating me. The only way I see this fight ending is with Miguel Cotto being knocked out. I cannot see the fight going past nine rounds,” he said.

With Cotto having started out at light-welterweight, Martinez believes that size will play a decisive factor in the fight, with this bout ranking amongst one of his biggest to date.

“There is no hatred toward Miguel, we are both professionals. I am totally focused on the fight and totally focused on the task at hand, which is beating Miguel Cotto. Miguel does not have the same power at this weight as he does at 147lbs,” Martinez said.

“I am the power-puncher out of the two of us. The most important factor in this fight, though, is the level of intelligence that I will use on Saturday. I am not worried about the judges being swayed in this bout or any questionable decisions; because there is no way that this fight is going the distance.

“This fight is right up there with Paul Williams and Kelly Pavlik as one of the most important of my career,” he said.

Fighting at the iconic Madison Square Garden has become commonplace for Cotto, who has only lost once there in eight occasions, and enjoyed a partisan crowd for most outings.

But, the slick southpaw Martinez is looking to follow in the footsteps of Argentine idols, heavyweight Oscar Bonavena and former undisputed middleweight champion Carlos Monzon, by taking over the grandest of amphitheatres.

“To fight at Madison Square Garden where great Argentinean boxers fought like Oscar Bonavena and Carlos Monzon is the greatest honour that any Argentinean boxer could possibly have,” he said.

“The Argentinean community in New York has always been very supportive of me, and I expect an incredible atmosphere similar to a world cup soccer match.

“Miguel Cotto says Madison Square Garden is his home, but come June 7th he will be evicted and I will prove that I am one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world,” said a confident Martinez.

Martinez vs. Cotto is live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky 437/490HD & Virgin 546) this Saturday night at 2am. Visit www.boxnation.com to subscribe.

BRITISH STAR MARTIN MURRAY’S MONTE CARLO RING RETURN TO BE SHOWN LIVE ON BOXNATION ON JUNE 21

Martin Murray
LONDON (June 3) – British world title hopeful Martin Murray will be back in action, live and exclusive on BoxNation, when he takes on Max Bursak for the vacant WBC Silver middleweight title on June 21st from Monte Carlo.

The 30-year-old ace, who is ranked amongst the best 160 pounders around, returns to the ‘Channel of Champions’ for the first time since his highly controversial loss to reigning WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez.

The St Helens man travelled to the hostile and thunder hit Buenos Aires last year, when he fought in front of a crowd of 40,000 at the Estadio José Amalfitani, home to Argentine football club Velez Sarsfield.

Twice decking Martinez, with only one being ruled an official knockdown, Murray out hustled his Argentine foe before succumbing to the judges’ scorecards in which he lost a unanimous decision.

He bounced back following the contentious decision with wins over Sergey Khomitsky before overcoming Ishmael Tetteh in April, and has promised fireworks when he meets Bursak, who has a record of 29 wins in his 32 fights with only two defeats.

“Training is going brilliant, I’m feeling really well, I’m focused and I’m up for the fight. I can’t wait to get in the ring. It’s great to fight on BoxNation again and know that all the fans back home can tune in and watch me fight. I’m going to put on a great performance and make it a night not to be missed,” said Murray.

Murray was ringside when the Ukrainian last fought and knows he’ll need to be at his very best to not only win but look impressive, with a glittering performance putting him in line for the victor of Martinez’s and Miguel Cotto’s crunch clash this weekend, also live and exclusive on BoxNation.

“I watched Bursak in February when he fought in Monte Carlo against Jarrod Fletcher and I thought he was unlucky not to get the decision. He’s a tough fighter and you don’t have to go looking for him, he’s just there,” Murray said.

“He’s a real brawler and what he lacks in skill he makes up for in toughness and experience. We’ve both had nearly 10 weeks notice for this fight so I know he’ll be up for it and I’m expecting him to be in the best shape he’s ever been,” he said.

Murray joins a sizzling summer lineup on BoxNation which kicks-off this weekend with Martinez-Cotto, plus Stuart Hall defending his world title against Paul Butler; with heavyweight hitman David Price also back on a monster night of action.

Provodnikov – Algieri conference call transcript

RuslanProvodnikov19-1024x670-250x163
Marc Abrams: The “Siberian Rocky” Ruslan Provodnikov will defend his WBO Junior Welterweight Championship against undefeated New Yorker Chris Algieri Saturday night, June 14, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn and it will be televised live on HBO Boxing After Dark. The card is being promoted by Banner Promotions and Top Rank, in association with Star Boxing. The telecast will kick off at 10:00 p.m. Eastern with the WBO Junior Middleweight title collision between undefeated defending champion Demetrious Andrade and mandatory challenger Brian Rose of the United Kingdom. On the call we have Ruslan Provodnikov, his manager, Vadim Kornilov; Promoter Art Pelullo and Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach. We also have Chris Algieri,

Arthur Pelullo: On behalf of Banner Promotions and Top Rank, and naturally Joe will say introduce himself dealing with his company; we’d like to thank everybody. It is going be a heck of a night. It’s going be a great show. Chris Algieri, who’s with Joe DeGuardia of Star Boxing, is undefeated. A Long Island native, he’s basically fighting in his backyard. It’s going to be a very difficult fight for Ruslan Provodnikov. And we’re very excited about being at the Barclays Center. Brett Yormark and his team have been very helpful to us. HBO is going to televise the event live in the U.S. and it will be seen live in several countries as well.

Joe DeGuardia: Thank you, Artie. I’d like to echo your comments. I’m very excited for this fight on June 14. And I think it’s going be a fantastic night of boxing between being in Brooklyn, being on HBO and having such a fantastic co-feature fight — Demetrious Andrade’s first world title defense — and the main event fight, Ruslan Provodnikov, who everybody knows is one of the toughest fighters in boxing today, against undefeated Chris Algieri of Long Island. I’m really looking forward to a great fight and glad to be there on June 14.

Vadim Kornilov: We’re excited to finally have Ruslan fighting in New York, considered one of the most Russian-populated cities in the United States and we’re very excited to see all the fans come out — a lot of people from all over the United States to see the fight live. We hope that Chris is going be as well prepared as Ruslan to make this fight a great looking fight for TV and for all the fans.

Ruslan Provodnikov: I’m very happy to be fighting in New York. I’m happy to be the first big Russian fighter to fight at the Barclays Center. HBO thank you very much for supporting the rest of my team. I appreciate everybody’s support. Everything’s going well. And I’m glad to be here with Freddie Roach
.
Freddie Roach: We’ve had a great training camp, great sparring partners. We know Algieri is great young boxer and we’re getting as ready as we can for him. And we’re doing very well. I’m happy where we are right now and we will be in New York on Saturday night [May 31] to finish up the work and can’t wait–we can’t wait to get this one going.

Joe DeGuardia: At this point in time I’ll introduce both Chris Algieri, undefeated, 19-0 from New York, Long Island, New York, pride of Huntington and his trainer as well, Tim Lane.

Mr. Chris Algieri: I’d just like to say thank you. And I want to say hello to everybody as well. I’m very excited for June 14, preparations are going really well out here in training camp in Las Vegas and we are very happy with where things are going. June 14 is going be a great night. It’s a real honor to be fighting at the Barclays Center and being HBO and to be fighting in my home state. I’m looking forward to it.

Ruslan, do you feel that you have to win in fantastic fashion now so that big name opponents will have to face you? I know that you feel you’ve been ducked. Do you feel that in order to get big fights now you have to win in fantastic fashion?

Ruslan Provodnikov: Definitely it’s a big responsibility for me. Most importantly because now I’m a world champion and I’m defending my title. I have to fight like a world champion. I will try to finish the fight in a great fashion, as always, because I always do.

How do you feel with the frustration of not getting a big name opponent for your next fight? Chris is a very good fighter, but he doesn’t have the name value right now at least of Juan Manuel Marquez or Tim Bradley.

Arthur Pelullo: Neither did Ruslan before he fought Tim Bradley. So, you can’t look past anybody. That’s just my two cents. They thought it was going to be a workout against Bradley. And, believe me, Chris Algieri is a very difficult fight. And I’m sorry for interrupting.

Ruslan Provodnikov: No, it does not bother me. I’m very loyal to my space in life and Chris is a great opponent. He’s a great fighter. And this is what happened and this is the way it should have been. I know my time will come.

Artie, I just wanted to ask you, kind of piggy backing on what was being said, are you taking any extra measures to reassure that Ruslan doesn’t underestimate Chris or is it pretty safe going that he’s taking the fight seriously as you’d want him?

Arthur Pelullo: We always take fights seriously. And we get ready for every fight 100 percent. So, I mean at the level we’re at right now, the World Title level, you can’t take anyone for granted. And we’re in great shape for this fight.
Chris, about your underdog status right now, do you understand that it’s simply because you haven’t had a chance at the spotlight yet? I mean granted you have definitely been on Friday Night Fights as have a lot of great fighters, but you’re not getting the attention Ruslan has. Are you offended by that or do you just see it as ‘Oh well, that’s going be the case because I haven’t really established my name and I won’t be able to until I beat someone like Ruslan?”

Chris Algieri: No, I don’t take any offense to it. It’s just the nature of the game in this situation. I haven’t had those big name fights yet. I’ve only been on TV a couple of times. But I have been working very hard throughout my entire career and getting ready for this opportunity. And on June 14, everybody’s going to see who I am and see what I bring to the table and that’s when everyone can really see what Chris Algieri’s all about.

Chris, your background is in kickboxing. At this point do you see it as beneficial to your boxing career having that background or detrimental?

Chris Algieri: I definitely do see it as a benefit. I’ve been in big fights and I’ve fought fighters from all over the world before. I’ve been in very tough fights, physically demanding fights, long fights. But, I think that really has carried over in my boxing career and has brought me to where I am today.

Ruslan, the nickname Siberian Rocky, I was wondering who gave it to you and if you are aware–if you have watched the Rocky movies and what the nickname means to you if you have, indeed, seen those Rocky movies.

Ruslan Provodnikov: The nickname Siberian Rocky to me means that a lot. It means to never give up.
Freddie, how much time have you had with Ruslan in contrast with the last camp ahead of the Alvarado fight?

Freddie Roach: We’ve been doing very well now and we had a full camp together and last time I was busy with Manny so I missed the last week of the camp. But, this time I’ll be there the entire time. Ruslan and Miguel Cotto will both be traveling together to New York. So, we can all work together in New York and we’ve had a full camp this time.

Was it Manny Pacquiao last time or was it really the Cotto [fight against Delvin Rodriguez] camp the week ahead of time?

Mr. Freddie Roach: It was actually the Cotto camp because the fight was in Florida so I did take Ruslan to Florida with us to be with us for that week. And then he and Marvin traveled, and Gavin traveled too, for the last fight.

From your perspective as the trainer what is the difference for Ruslan in terms of what he gets out of that additional time with you?

Freddie Roach: Well, we work very well together, but Marvin is a great assistant also because Marvin’s one of the assistants that doesn’t change. He knows my style. He knows what I want and he follows instructions very well. And he did a great job in that fight against Alvarado, so I don’t think we lose anything with Marvin and Ruslan being together.

Tell me about–you said he does a great job. On fight night and in training camp last time ahead of the Alvarado fight, what was it that Marvin really brought in terms of continuing your game plan and helping Ruslan get that success that he did?

Freddie Roach: He knows the rules and so forth. We had a little problem with the other camp [Alvarado] on a rules issue. And we won that argument. And then Marvin’s professionalism in the corner. He doesn’t get excited. He stays calm. He talks to his fighter. He doesn’t scream at them. He doesn’t yell at people. People don’t respond to being yelled at. And he’s very good at that. He’s the best assistant I’ve ever had.

How long has he been with you?

Freddie Roach: Three years.

What will Marvin’s role be with you for this upcoming fight with Chris Algieri?

Mr. Freddie Roach: He’ll be right beside me. And we’ll talk about the strategy. We have a strategy for the fight, but we’ll talk about what adjustments we need to make during the rounds and we believe the lead guy in this fight for Ruslan.

Artie, I know that the fighters themselves don’t like to look beyond the current opponent, but what are you looking at for Ruslan should he triumph on the 14th?

Arthur Pelullo: The most important thing, and you said it, is June the 14th. So, right now there are a lot of fights out there for both Chris Algieri and Ruslan Provodnikov, whoever is the winner. I really would just like to stay focused on this event. I actually don’t believe getting into details about what’s out in the horizon because that means you’re assuming you’re going to win. And I just think that right now the Algieri fight, when it was first made, a lot of people didn’t believe that it was going to be a difficult fight. And I knew it all along that it’s going be a difficult fight. I know he’s a tough guy. I know he’s coming to win. So, for me to start talking about future events, I think that’s premature. Right now it’s Chris Algieri and he has to get through fighting an undefeated kid, which is a very difficult fight.

Arthur Pelullo: So, that’s my best answer I can give you about a future event.

So, obviously, the fights that Ruslan had last year, both the closest loss with Bradley and the win over Alvarado, were big for his career and brought him to this position where he’s at now — where he gets to be the A side. But, should he triumph over Algieri on the 14th, what do you believe that that would do for his career?

Arthur Pelullo: Both of these kids have to win. Their careers are predicated on winning. It’s not like you’re Donovan McNabb, he’s playing for the Eagles. He’s getting $10 million year, whether the Eagles have a good year or a bad year. The winner of this fight will move on to a big fight. So, on June the 14th, at about 1:00 a.m., come over to ringside and ask me the question then about what the next fight is. And I’ll let you know.

Chris, you’ve seen Ruslan fight on TV. What do you think that Ruslan does well and what do you think are some of the weaknesses that you’ve seen in his game?

Chris Algieri: Ruslan is a great fighter and a great champion. It’s a real honor to be in there with him. I have seen him fight before. I’m actually a fan of watching Ruslan fight. He’s a pressure fighter. He comes forward. He’s super tough, very durable. He’s a good strong puncher and he maintains his pressure throughout the bout. He moves his head when he needs to and crosses the line and he closes the distance very well. Those are the things that my team has been studying to work on. But, just based on past fights, there is a weakness with dealing with a jab and a boxer and movement, but really those are the things that we’ve been trying to work most on. But, at the end of the day it’s a fight. Ruslan is going to press the action. I’m going o have to stand and fight at times. So, we’ll be ready for that as well.

Are there any opponents that you faced that you feel are similar to what Ruslan will be bringing to the table?

Chris Algieri: Yes, I think I’ve fought a couple of guys who were pressure fighters and big punchers. My last opponent Emanuel Taylor was a very, very well-known knockout puncher. He had one-punch power. He also threw a lot of very tight short punches. I fought a fighter, a Puerto Rican fighter, Jose Peralta, who is a shorter, stockier pressure aggressive guy as well. So, I feel like I’ve dealt with similar, but not quite like Ruslan-type fighters in the past.

Chris, how does kickboxing training translate into boxing and how do you feel you’re going to capitalize on such a big fight?

Chris Algieri: Well, in terms of the question about kickboxing — a lot of the techniques are very similar to punch techniques. The fact that I’ve been fighting without a headgear for such a long time I think has really helped with my defense in my pro boxing career. But, in terms of how this sport is fought; it’s a totally different pace. Boxing is a lot faster. Conditioning is a lot more intensive. Fights are longer. But, I think I’ve made those changes over the past 19 fights and conditioning has never really been a problem. But, in preparation for this fight, my last couple camps have been going really well. And we didn’t really see that we needed to change too much. My team, my coach, my camp, has put in a tremendous amount of work to develop a great program for this fight for my strength and conditioning. And my trainers, Tim Lane and Keith Trimble, have a great game plan that we’ve been working on. And we’ve been executing. So, we’re ready for this big fight.

Chris, what gym in Vegas have you been training at for this fight?

Chris Algieri: I’ve been training at my coach’s gym, Xtreme Couture MMA. It’s actually an MMA gym.Tim Lane, trains at that gym, so we’ve been stationed over there.

What’s the philosophy behind training in Vegas and being so far away from Long Island and how it benefits you in terms of minimizing distractions. You’ve been doing this since, what, 2010 I think?

Mr. Chris Algieri: I’ve been moving around quite a bit to training camps. Long Island is not really a great place to be a professional athlete. Things are very far away. Things are expensive. There are no other top level pros in the area. You generally have to go west and go into Brooklyn, into Manhattan, which is quite a trek from Long Island. So, it doesn’t really make sense for me to stay out there. It just makes things a lot more difficult. I have a trainer at home, Keith Trimble, who I work with while I’m in New York. And then I have my trainer here, Tim Lane, here in Vegas, so we come out here and train here. And there are just great fighters all over the place. There are great gyms that are in a very close proximity. And there are top level guys here at all times.

In terms of prepping for this fight, was your sparring specifically designed to find pressure fighters who are like Ruslan, because you’ve been talking about his ability to pressure? Was that the focus of your sparring or did you change it up?

Mr. Chris Algieri: Absolutely. My coaches set up this camp perfectly. And they were out here in Vegas scouting out perfect sparring partners for this camp while I was in New York training and getting into condition. I had some good sparring while I was in New York and then I came out here and have had great sparring thus far.

Freddie, what impresses you about Algieri when you watch him on tape?

Freddie Roach: He’s a good boxer. He moves well. He’s has a good jab. He’s a solid boxer. But nobody’s perfect and we have a very good game plan.

Do you think he’ll wilt under Ruslan’s pressure as the fight goes on? Is he vulnerable to body shots in your opinion?

Freddie Roach: I think everybody in the world is if you work on it hard enough. So, we’ll see.

Vadim, you had given me perspective on Ruslan’s popularity in Russia compared to some of the other fighters. Can you address his popularity? And, from what I understand, he the most popular of fighters from Russia?

Vadim Kornilov: Well, in Russia I think right now is between Kovalev and Ruslan. But there’s been a lot of different polls and ratings and stuff like that that have shown Ruslan coming ahead. I think they’re about at the same level. Ruslan passed the bigger fights and fought some bigger opponents. I think because of that, Ruslan has taken off a little bit more.

What do you think is his appeal? He really seems to come off, especially the night that he won the title, you know, you watched HBO’s “Two Days With”–before the Alvarado fight — and he brought his mother. And he was really emotional. He mentioned fighting for the people.

Vadim Kornilov: He’s very grounded. He’s not spoiled or jaded. And I think people can really relate to that.

Can you elaborate on that?

Vadim Kornilov: It’s the type of person that he is and the way he is with people and the fans, and the way he fights. I think people can really relate to that and just by watching the way he is in the ring. I think that basically goes to people’s love for him. Ruslan is fan-friendly inside and outside the ring.

Arthur Pelullo: I think he has the right nickname, the Siberian Rocky because everybody can relate to the underdog. And everybody can relate to a guy fighting his way out of less than ideal conditions — whether it’s poverty or a low income environment — to reach a better level financially in their life. A better life in general. When he fought Bradley he was considered just the opponent and it was a payday. And what he did was he rose to the occasion. People like that. People can identify with somebody who’s a working class person. There were a lot of great fighters in history that were like considered working class guys and everybody wanted to be a part of their bandwagons. And they attracted fans because they were the people’s guy. And Ruslan’s a people’s champion. He’s a tough guy. And he’s straight. He tells you the way it is. After he reviewed the tape he said listen, I could see how people thought Bradley won the fight. People like that. It’s like when he — if he lost a fight, he lost the fight. If he won the fight, he won the fight. That’s what people want to hear. People like straight stuff, straight talking. And the Russian citizens, they’re right up there. They want the truth. They don’t want a lot of good bologna. And I think they appreciate that he’s a straight forward guy. And he’s has a lot of Mexican fans and American fans because on top of all of that he’s the most TV and fan-friendly fighter right now in America. That’s my opinion.

Ruslan, please explain where you’re from, what you overcame and also what you feel personally – what you try to bring across in appealing to your audience?

Ruslan Provodnikov: I came from a small village in Russian called Beryozovo. I had a very hard upbringing. Hard work. The reason, you know, for the fans I think that’s a good question for the fans. I don’t know why. I’m doing a lot of … that’s a good question for the fans to ask why they like me.

Why do you fight the way you do and when you say things like the belts aren’t important, the money isn’t important, it’s the way I fight and what people think of the way I fight. Do you think that is an aspect of your fighting style and your personality that goes to your fans?

Ruslan Provodnikov: Everything I said is because the way I fight comes from inside of me. It’s my character. And I’m probably never going to fight differently. And people love me probably because of that, and of who I am. I am who I am in the ring and I just put everything in the ring. It’s who I am.

Chris, you talked about two of the guys on your resume who you feel are most similar to Ruslan. You talk about which fights in particular where you feel like he’s had problems, talked about his jab. The jab that seems to bother him. Can you talk about the fight that you feel like he’s had the most problems in?

Chris Algieri: I mean the Tim Bradley fight, even Alvarado when he boxed a little bit. I’m not big on watching tape or watching my opponents. I’ve seen Ruslan’s fights because I watched them live. Like I said, I was a fan while Ruslan has been fighting. And my coaches have done the studying and have watched other fights and told me what the strategy is
.
Okay, anything from watching his against Herrera?

Chris Algieri: No, I hadn’t seen that whole fight to tell you the truth. You know, my coaches did and they’ve said that they saw certain things and certain aspects that we want to capitalize on. And we’ve been working on those things. But, like I said, I don’t really watch too much tape. I’m a fight fan. I don’t study my opponents all that much in terms of their past performances because boxing is all about rhythm and really you can’t watch a guy’s rhythm from watching a fight. Everyone’s different on fight night.

Freddie, you talked about not wanting Ruslan to fight Manny Pacquiao. If he keeps winning and if Pacquiao beats Marquez or whichever fight is next, don’t you think the demand will increase for him to fight Pacquiao. And if it does will you then relent and allow the fight to happen?

Freddie Roach: I have both fighters and I would hate to lose one of them, one of the fighters. But, the thing is if the demand does come again, we’re going to have to let it happen and it’d be a sad day for me. But the thing is, I probably sit both fights out and just watch it on TV myself.

You wouldn’t be at either corner? You’ve said in the past Manny’s your number one guy.

Freddie Roach: Manny is my number one guy and so forth. But, Ruslan’s very close to me. And Ruslan’s been a very hard worker. But, the demand is getting closer and closer, so with the win here it could happen. And Manny is running out of opponents right now, and that’s the way it goes.

But you would watch the fight on TV?

Arthur Pelullo: We’ll give him a ticket. Freddie, you got a ticket. Don’t worry about it. See, you got a ringside seat for the fight. Freddie, no problem.

If everything goes according to plan and according to your expectation, how will this fight go and will it end in a knockout in approximately what round?

Freddie Roach: We have a tough opponent in front of us and he has been knocked out before in kickboxing matches. So, we will put pressure on him and we will do the best we can to get him out of there. And I think every fight should end in a knockout and I look. We don’t go looking for a knockout. We’re going to go out there and win every round one at a time. It won’t be easy up to that point that’s for sure.

Hey, Chris, like you I have a BA from the Harvard of Long Island Stoney Brook. And I’m curious, as you make a decision to go from possible pre-med into a sport that so many people would see as counter to healing, towards health et cetera.

Chris Algieri: The way I look at it is boxing is definitely a hurt business, but at the end of the day it is still a sport. And there are certain requirements, you know, required of each fighter medically to make sure that we’re all fit to fight. And I feel that the way that I prepare for fights and the way that my style is that I take as little damage as possible. Of course, there’s a tremendous risk involved, but my plan is to minimize that risk the best I can by being as prepared as possible and fighting the way that I do. But, in terms of just my future plans and where I come from, you know, it doesn’t really determine. Boxing is my passion. This is what I’m doing now and I can still do it. I can still perform it at this high level. And I’m honored and blessed to be able to do that. But, there’s life after boxing. And there’s always time to go to school. There’s always time for me to pursue what my future career goals are. And this is what I’m doing now because I can and I love it.

Do you feel based on your academic background and your diverse athletic background that you have an intelligence edge when you’re in the ring?

Chris Algieri: I would say so. I mean, I fight in a way that I use my intelligence when I fight in a way that definitely IQ can help. But, you know, it is about the boxing IQ when it comes to just stepping inside the ring. Being good at calculus is not going to help me in a fight. But, being able to analyze certain situations, especially in a mind-body sense, like you said, because of my athletic background definitely has helped my progression in the sport. I think I’ve learned at a fast rate because of my past experiences and because I am a student of the game.

So, truth be told, when you’re in schools like the schools that you’re in and you’re getting that kind of education and then you tell the people around you that you’re going to box professionally, how many stares did you get? How many wooly eyes did you get?

Chris Algieri: Countless. You know, I was a lab technician for years at our culture and Harvard Laboratory and initially no one really believed me that that’s really what I wanted to do was to be a fighter and that I was fighting. And then more and more people were seeing what I was doing and they were coming to fights and they were watching me fight. And I think I turned a lot of those people around. I had a lot of people in the science community trying to talk me out of fighting, but I really don’t get that much anymore. I think that people are a lot more on board because of where we’ve gone and are excited to see how far I can take it.

Chris, we’ve seen the two more rounds documentary and we saw what Ruslan did to Mike Alvarado, a true warrior, one of the best action fighters of this era. How are you prepared to deal with the mental aspect of the fight? You’ve got a man across from you, who’s willing to take your soul, so to speak, and is going to try to break you down and make you quit. But, despite the athletic nature of the fight, how do you plan on dealing with the mental aspect of the game and how do you overcome any fear you may have?

Chris Algieri: Well, I think that one of my best aspects, as a fighter, is my mental strength and my mental advantage. I am fully committed and I sacrificed quite a bit for this fight and this career of mine. And, like I said, this is a passion. And my mental focus definitely has helped me throughout my entire career and I think it’s going to continue to pay dividends in this fight.
Do you have any fear? Do you have any fear fighting Ruslan Provodnikov?

Chris Algieri: I mean I believe that there’s fear involved in any fight. But, when it’s fight night and the preparations are over, I feel nothing but confident. I’m looking forward to June 14. Everything is going the way that I had hoped and dreamed. And I’m actually really looking forward to this fight. Now, it’s an opportunity for me to showcase my skills and to be in with one of the top guys in the game. So, it’s just a great opportunity all around. I don’t concentrate too much on the fear. I’m just getting as prepared as possible.

Chris, you’ve fought so many fights of your professional career in Long Island in front of hometown crowds. And I think my understanding when this fight was made that one of the reasons, among others, that you got the fight was because it was going be in New York and most likely you would bring a crowd with you, which would perk up the attendance at the arena that you’re having this fight at. My question for you is how big of a deal is it and how much does it mean to you to be in your first world title fight and be doing it in front of your hometown people?

Chris Algieri: It’s crazy, but this is what I envisioned in my mind for my first world title fight. I had envisioned it being in Madison Square Garden, of course, because there was no Barclays Center 10 years ago when I was thinking about this. But, it’s amazing to be fighting in the Barclays Center. It’s such an incredible arena. It means a tremendous amount to me to be fighting for a world title, my first world title fight, in my home state. So, it makes it that much bigger and that much more of a grand event.

And the other thing I wanted to ask you about is style of the fight. We know, and that Ruslan has talked about in his call, he’s about pressure and coming forward and going to you the way he did against Bradley, the way he took care of Alvarado. You are more of a boxer. I mean your knockouts are not the way his are. Is this basically comes down to, if I’m wrong here, you’ve got to outbox him to win this fight. He’s not a guy that goes down very often. He’s not a guy that’s been stopped. Do you look at this as you’ve got to just go out and box pretty much the perfect kind of fight and win that decision otherwise it could be trouble for you?

Chris Algieri: No, the monster of campus and master boxer. We’ve got to go out there and be a master boxer. This is a boxing match. It’s not a barroom brawl. So, I’ve got to go out there and use my skills. And as much as Ruslan is a come forward and pressure fighter, it takes a certain amount of skills. And I know him and his team have been working on — I’m sure working on more boxing skills and trying to work their game plan. So, it’s not just a fight. This is a boxing match. And we’re both going to go out there with our strategies. And, you know, a big part of mine is going to be trying to be a master boxer.

Do you feel like if he is able to pressure you and get right close to you and take it to you that if you have to you can stand and trade with guy because that’s the–he’s going to try to impose himself on you compared to another guy that might also want to box with you.

Chris Algieri: Yeah, I mean absolutely. There’s no shot that that I’m not going to have to fight. This is a boxing match. Ruslan’s going to put the pressure and he’s going be in front of me. But, at the same time even though I’m deemed the boxer and he the puncher, once we’re inside, I can still punch. I’m still going be in there, still being able to throw and use my skills on the inside.

Ruslan, you are the pressure fighter, the guy that likes to go there and get his guy mix it up, not necessarily the technical boxer. Is it all about for you tracking this guy down and getting him out of there?

Ruslan Provodnikov: All my career I’ve had to fight guys that were taller than me and had longer arms. And all I’ve had to do is try to get to them and try to pressure them. It’s no secret what my plan is. Of course I’m going to pressure. We know what he’s going to do. I mean they all try to box me and they all try to move and jab. But, I’m going to follow my plan and always do is that break the first one down outside. I can break him down from the distance from up close and from anywhere. And but the question is always how much can–how long can he jab?

Freddie, I wanted to ask you about that also. You know, how well he’d be able to go after a guy like Chris who is longer and is also a good boxer who has good movement? I mean Ruslan has not faced a lot of guys like that in his career it seems to me.

Freddie Roach: No, we definitely have to pressure him and cut the ring off and control the ring. And Chris is a very good boxer with long arms. And we have to break him down and get inside early, set traps and we need to really control the ring. And that’s what we’ve been working on quite a bit. Ruslan’s getting very good at controlling the ring and keeping himself in the best spot. So, I think that’s the big key to the fight is who’s going control the ring.

When this fight was originally announced Nassau Coliseum was very much on the table to host this fight. I just wanted to know how close it was to actually taking place there and what swayed it to go to Barclays instead?

Arthur Pelullo: Well, it was very close to happening there. We agreed to make a deal there and then we didn’t actually — weren’t able to sign the agreement. The gentleman was out sick. And then I get a call from Vadim, ‘don’t sign anything.’ You know, we have the opportunity to move it to the Barclays Center. And that’s exactly what happened.

Is there a plan for you to build up Ruslan in the East Coast specifically? I mean he’s now fighting 30 minutes away from Little Odessa.

Arthur Pelullo: Well, that was one of the main reasons why we decided to move the fight. He is in Brooklyn. He is 30 minutes from Brighton Beach. There is a large community of Russian people there. And we believe the ticket sales are going well. And we think that he’s going to become a star in that area. And the manager, general manager, president of the arena and the president of the Nets Brett Yormark, loves it, loves the kid, loves the fight. And would like to have more than one Ruslan fight there because things are going so well. It doesn’t hurt that, the owner of the Nets, Prokhorov, is a Russian too and he’s been very good at helping us get everything through Vadim and Albert, friends of Vadim’s in Russia, to help us get this deal. The bottom line is that Ruslan Provodnikov is a ticket seller and we think it’s going be a good show. And where better for him to defend his title for his first time, but in an area where we hit the market of his people, which is a great idea. And we got lucky, timing is everything.

Chris, question for you. I know you said it was always your dream to fight in New York, well, specifically Madison Square Garden. Was there any disappointment knowing that the fight wasn’t a little bit closer to home and Nassau Coliseum as opposed to your friends having to drive in or take a train instead?

Chris Algieri: No, the only disappointment was that being as Nassau would have been a very historic event because there hasn’t been a fight there in I believe almost 20 years. But, other than that, no, not at all. You know, Barclays is, like I said, is a beautiful arena. It’s brand new. Everything in it is pristine there. And they’re holding–you know, it’s pretty much the premier venue in the New York area now. But, in terms of my fans and I think the most of the people that I talk to are–were a lot more excited for it to be at the Barclays than even Nassau. It’s very easy to get to from Long Island, so it’s no issue.

Arthur Pelullo: I’d just like to say thank you to everybody for joining us. Like I said, we think it’s going to be a great event. As we just talked about, the main event, is a very intriguing fight because Chris Algieri is now where Ruslan Provodnikov was about two years ago when he fought Bradley. So, we’ll see what Ruslan is made of and because he’s supposed to win a fight like this, but it’s a very difficult fight. And I wish both of them good luck. The co-feature being Demetrius Andrade is going to be a heck of a fight with the number one contender against Brian Rose. That will also be a fight will determine the direction of his career. As you all know, the press conference will be Thursday, the weigh in is Friday. The doors open at 6:00. The first bout will be at 7:00. We will be airing the fight live internationally. The international show will start about 9:00 p.m. There’s plenty of tickets available. The ringsides are going very fast. But, there are a few tickets available in those price ranges as well. I want to thank everybody for coming, Chris, Joe, Ruslan, Freddie, and Vadim and everybody on the call. Thank you very much, guys.

Joe DeGuardia: No, I’ll just echo your comments, Artie. I appreciate everybody being on the call. I’m certainly looking forward to June 14 where I think we’re gonna have a fantastic match and certainly a wonderful boxer, puncher, bull matador, all those kind of clichés that we’ll be able to see on June 14. I think it’ll be a great night. And be sure to be there at the Barclays Center or tune in on HBO June 14.

Ruslan Provodnikov: You know everybody, it was a great conversation and I want to wish good luck to Chris. I hope you do have a great training camp. And I’ll see everybody June 14.

Chris Algieri: I would just like to thank everybody for being involved in the call and for everybody who came and called and asked questions. I wish the best of luck to Ruslan and his team and to Freddie and the rest of your camp, that I hope it goes well. And I will see you guys on June 14.

World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior welterweight champion, the “Siberian Rocky” RUSLAN PROVODNIKOV defends his world title against undefeated scholar-brawler CHRIS ALGIERI, Saturday, June 14, at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. The fight will be televised live on HBO Boxing After Dark®, beginning at 10:10 p.m. ET/PT.

Promoted by Banner Promotions and Top Rank®, in association with Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing, remaining tickets to the Provodnikov-Algieri world championship event, priced at $31, $56, $86, $106 and $206, can be purchased online via Ticketmaster by visiting www.barclayscenter.com or www.ticketmaster.com, or by calling 800-745-3000. Tickets are also available at the American Express Box Office at Barclays Center. Group tickets are also available by calling 855-GROUP-BK. For information on individual suites, please call 718-BK-SUITE.

The co-main event will feature undefeated WBO junior middleweight champion DEMETRIUS “Boo Boo” ANDRADE making his first title defense, against No. 1 contender and mandatory challenger BRIAN “The Lion” ROSE.

These four gladiators boast a combined record of 87-3-1 (44 KOs)- a 96 percent winning ratio, with more than half of their total victories coming by way of knockout.

The action-packed undercard will feature undefeated World Boxing Council (WBC) Continental Americas champion, Top-Five contender and Long Beach, Long Island fan favorite “Irish” SEANIE MONAGHAN, and the debut of professional women’s boxing at Barclays Center with HEATHER “The Heat” HARDY of Brooklyn risking her undefeated record.

Provodnikov (23-2, 16 KOs), born and raised in Berezovo, Khanty-Mansi, Russia in Siberia, is trained by Hall of Famer Freddie Roach. He had an incredible year in 2013. On March 16 of last year, he was on the wrong end of a hotly-disputed unanimous decision loss to undefeated WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley, Jr. Provodnikov, who moved up in weight for his first title shot, hurt Bradley numerous times during their slugfest, nearly knocking out the defending champion in the first and second rounds and scoring a knockdown in the final round. Two of the three scorecards had Bradley winning by only one point. It was voted the Fight of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association of America. Provodnikov moved down to his natural weight in his next fight and challenged WBO junior welterweight champion Mike Alvarado, scoring a dramatic 10th round stoppage to claim his world title, last October 19. Five of Provodnikov’s last six victories have been by knockout.

Algieri (19-0 8 KOs), hails from nearby Huntington, NY. Over the last 18 months Chris has elevated himself to a world-class contender after accumulating significant victories over top prospect Jose Alejo, former USBA champion Mike Arnaoutis, and most recently highly-rated contender Emmanuel Taylor in February. He’s as much a scholar as he is a brawler. He graduated from Stony Brook University with Honors in 2007 with a Bachelors of Science in Health Care Management and then went on to receive his Masters degree from the New York Institute of Technology. He aspires to attend Medical School.

Havoc Boxing Promotions exposes Hamir Gonzalez as boxing poacher for acting as Cruiserweight Santander Silgado’s official agent

NEW YORK (June 3, 2014) — Havoc Boxing Promotions has successfully exposed International matchmaker Hamir Gonzalez as a boxing poacher for misrepresenting himself as the official agent for Colombian cruiserweight Santander Silgado (25-2, 20 KOs).

“Anybody who wants to talk about having Santander Silgado fight on a show must deal with Havoc Boxing Promotions,” Havoc Boxing Promotions president Rob Diaz explained. “Otherwise, they can forget about Silgado fighting because we have an exclusive promotional contact with him. Gonzalez was going around saying it has expired but that isn’t true. Our contract with him is valid into 2016.”

At substantial cost, Brooklyn-based Havoc Boxing Promotions developed Silgado from an unknown Columbian knockout artist into a world title contender. In 2012, Silgado lost his first fight as a professional to World Boxing Association (WBA) cruiserweight champion Denis Lebedev in Russia.

Havoc Boxing Promotions successful thwarted Gonzalez’ attempted to match Silgado in a June 6 main event fight against Danie Venter in South Africa. The promoter of this event, Real Steel Promotions, was unaware that Havoc Boxing Promotions had an exclusive promotional agreement with Silgado.

Havoc Boxing Promotions learned that Gonzalez misrepresented himself to Real Steel Promotions as Silgado’s official agent. After receiving a cease and desist letter from Havoc Boxing Promotions, as well as a copy of the valid promotional contract it has with Silgado, Real Steel Promotions complied and pulled Silgado from its June 6 show.

Gonzalez, however, managed to an overweight and out-of-shape Silgado into a World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver championship match as a late replacement for an injured fighter this past weekend in Moscow against WBC No. 1 ranked Rakhim “The Machine” Chakhkiev (19-1, 14 KOs).

Chakhkiev easily won a 12-round unanimous decision (118-110, 117-111, 117-110) and seriously derailed Silgado’s career, costing him his WBC #10, WBA #13 and World Boxing Organization (WBO) #14 ratings.

“Gonzalez is a poacher,” Diaz continued. “He took my 25-1, world-rated fighter to Moscow and was the only person Silgado’s corner. We’re not alone. He’claims to represent five fighters who have American-based promoters. We didn’t know about this fight in time like the other one to kill it. We’ve invested a lot in Silgado, got him into one world title fight, and had him ranked in the top 15 of three organizations. He went 12 rounds, lost the fight and everything with it because all they cared about was a check. Silgago was 15 pounds overweight. His belly was over his trunks and he was a heavyweight in a cruiserweight fight. How does he bring my fighter all alone to Russia? He was the only one in his corner; he’s a matchmaker not a trainer. No team, no cut-man, nobody else.

“I’ve lost a lot of respect for Silgado, too. He did it for the money. I thought he had higher standards than that, to be alone in Moscow with a matchmaker in his corner and nobody else. He told the promoter we didn’t promote him. Silgado could have easily won this fight if he had been in fighting shape. He never should have taken this fight.”

Although a relatively small promotional company, Havoc Boxing Promotions LLC is making it clear to Gonzalez and any others misrepresenting Silgado that it intends to fully protect itself and its fighters, up to and including the filing of lawsuits for Torturous Interference.

“This poacher has damaged my investment,” Diaz concluded. “I want everyone in boxing to know that Havoc Boxing will do everything to protect its interests and fighters. We will not be pushed around by Gonzalez or anybody else and vow to protect ourselves at all costs.”

“GGG” VS. GEALE SET FOR JULY 26 — MSG/HBO!!

Gennady Golovkin
NEW YORK CITY (June 3, 2014) Boxing’s fastest rising star, Middleweight World Champion, GENNADY “GGG” GOLOVKIN will battle two-time world champion DANIEL “The Real Deal” GEALE in his triumphant return to ‘The Mecca of Boxing”, Madison Square Garden SATURDAY, JULY 26 and televised Live on HBO World Championship Boxing® beginning at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT., it was announced today by K2 Promotions and GGG Promotions in association with Gary Shaw Productions and Grange Old School Boxing.

Headlining the sensational “G4” boxing extravaganza, Golovkin will defend his World Boxing Association (‘WBA’) and International Boxing Organization (‘IBO’) titles against Geale in the scheduled 12-round main event. Golovkin was recently elevated to “Super Champion” status by the World Boxing Association.

“Since his HBO debut less than two years ago, Gennady has become the hottest international star in boxing and we’re thrilled to promote his return to Madison Square Garden, the premier venue for boxing,” said Tom Loeffler, Managing Director of K2 Promotions. “This will be Gennady’s first fight in the main arena at Madison Square Garden, where only a select few could headline today.”

“Daniel Geale is a throwback fighter who has never backed down from a tough challenge and his mindset is no different going into the Golovkin fight,” said Gary Shaw. “GGG” is considered the top dog in the middleweight division by those in the business, but I believe Geale is the best. We will see how Golovkin fares against someone on his level. I have confidence Geale will come out on top.”
“I’m happy to be fighting at Madison Square Garden once again. Fighting in front of the great fans in New York City for the third time is an honor for me and I will train hard to defend my titles in style by giving the fans an exciting show,” said Golovkin. “Daniel Geale has a lot of world championship experience, is a big international name and I look forward to this challenge.”

“I’m pleased to be making my way back to HBO against Gennady Golovkin, a fighter who everyone thinks is invincible,” said Geale. “A victory will get me back to where I want to be. The people of Australia believe in me and that’s what drives me, my countrymen. I want to show them they have a great champion. On July 26th the world will see me back on top.”

“Gennady Golovkin became a breakout phenomenon in 2013, a year both he and Daniel Geale gave fans exhilarating performances on HBO,” said Peter Nelson, Vice President of Programming, HBO Sports. “Golovkin-Geale looks to exceed the high expectation these fighters have set for their fans. This match almost happened before, including what became the night Golovkin made his HBO debut in 2012, while a half a world away Geale won the middleweight title that Golovkin now possesses. There is an intriguing storyline to the fight, to which both fighters seek to write a emphatic ending in the ring at Madison Square Garden on July 26.”

Said Bill Treacy of Grange Old School Boxing, Geale’s co-promoter, “Of all the potential fights this is the one he wants the most. I firmly believe Daniel is the most talented middleweight in the world. The opportunity to return stateside in the main event on a HBO show at Madison Square Garden for two world titles is the ultimate motivation for him to put it beyond doubt.”

With the highest knockout ratio (89%) among all active champions, in addition to his extraordinary growth in viewership on HBO, Golovkin, 29-0-0 (26KO’s), has become a must-see attraction in the international sporting world.

In 2013, Golovkin scored four knockouts, three of which were telecast on HBO to outstanding viewership earning him plaudits for both Fighter of the Year and Knockout of the Year among many media members.

Previously holder of the (‘IBF’) International Boxing Federation Middleweight and WBA “Super” Middleweight Title, Geale brings a distinguished record of 30-2-0 (16KO’s) into the world title challenge with Golovkin. Geale is currently ranked #3 by the World Boxing Association.

Advance tickets priced at $500, $300, $200, $100, $50 and $25 can be purchased starting at 10:00 a.m. ET on Thursday, June 5 at the Madison Square Garden Box Office, all Ticketmaster outlets, Ticketmaster charge by phone (866-858-0008) and online at www.ticketmaster.com and www.thegarden.com

Training Camp Notes: Bigger, Faster, Stronger “The Rock” is Ready to Face-Off Against Dos Santos Friday, June 6 in South Africa

Pretoria, South Africa: South African phenom Thabiso “The Rock” Mchunu (16-1, 11 KOs) pushed himself even harder in training camp as he prepared to square off with Brazilian Julio “Gaspar” Cesar Dos Santos (26-2, 23 KOs) in front of his hometown crowd Friday, June 6 in Pretoria South Africa. The 26 year old cruiserweight is scheduled to face Dos Santos in ten rounds at Rembrandt Hall at the University of Pretoria in Pretoria, South Africa.

Mchunu has won six straight bouts (since September of 2011 when he suffered his first, and only, pro defeat to Zack Mwekassa) – four by knockout (KO 1 vs. Lesley Khumalo on March 3, 2012, KO 1 vs. Flo Simba on June 16, 2012, another KO 1 vs. Flo Simba on September 22, 2012 and KO 5 vs. Danie Venter on November 10, 2012) before making his US debut with an impressive ten round unanimous decision victory over “Fast” Eddie Chambers on August 3, 2013 on NBCSN Fight Night. His most recent win came on January 24, 2014 against Olanrewaju “God’s Power” Durodola in ten rounds at Resorts International Casino and Hotel in Atlantic City, NJ and also on NBCSN Fight Night. This will be his first fight in his home country since signing a promotional contract with Main Events late in 2013.

According to Sean Smith, Mchunu’s trainer, Thabiso pushed himself harder than ever before while preparing for this fight, “Thabiso has had a great camp. Although we stuck to the same program as usual, we pushed a little harder with the cardio work and rounds of sparring. He has made major progress in his running output and punching power this camp.”

Smith and Mchunu wanted to concentrate on Thabiso’s stamina in the later rounds heading into this fight and they made that the main focus of this training camp. Smith added, “I’ve seen Thabiso put together some of his best sparring to date in this camp. He is an extremely focused athlete, and has the ability to take things to a new level. It is very easy to see guys plateau and fizzle out soon as you increase the volume and intensity. I truly believe not too many guys can go the distance with Thabiso if he can sustain the pressure in the later rounds.”

“The Rock’s” opponent, Julio “Gaspar” Cesar Dos Santos is ten years his senior at age 36. Dos Santos only has two losses in his entire career and he has never been stopped. Also, the Brazilian has a staggering 88% (23 of 26) knockout-to-win ratio. Smith said of Dos Santos, “Julio Dos Santos is also in fantastic shape and this is going to be a very ascetically pleasing bout.” He added, “But fans are gonna see a razor sharp and relentless Thabiso. Dos Santos has a very good record but I think Thabiso is gonna make a statement loud and clear that he’s ready for the next level.”

With regards to this fight, Thabiso said only, “I am going to traumatize this guy from start to finish.”

Main Events and Show Pony Promotions co-promote Mchunu. Damian Michael of Show Pony said, “I really believe come fight night on Friday we are going to see a very different Mchunu. He knows nothing short of a KO will do! His skills are just on another level and he is, without a doubt, the most talented cruiser on the planet! With the like of Bellew, Cleverly and whole lot of other big names, the cruiserweight division really is heating up!” To which Thabiso replied, “Bring them. Bring anyone! Afolabi, Bellew or Huck – they cannot exist on my planet”

‘SATURDAY NIGHT IS MY DESTINY AND I’M READY TO SHOW I’VE STILL GOT IT!’ VOWS COTTO AHEAD OF HISTORICAL WORLD TITLE SHOWDOWN WITH WBC CHAMPION MARTINEZ

Miguel Cotto
LONDON (June 3) – Boxing superstar Miguel Cotto is ready to prove he is still a force as he aims to close in on his ‘destiny’ of becoming a four-weight world champion.

The 33-year-old hotshot is looking to become the first Puerto Rican to win world titles in four weight classes as he makes his bid for Sergio Martinez’s WBC middleweight crown this Saturday night, live and exclusive on BoxNation.

The momentous clash, taking place at the iconic Madison Square Garden, sees the mercurial Cotto move up to the 160 pound division for the first time in his career having started at light-welterweight.

Now, though, the Caguas born ace feels the time is right to face the slick Martinez and add the finishing touches to an incredible legacy which has seen him share the ring with some of boxing’s biggest names.

“Everything happens at the time it needs to happen. I do not push destiny. Boxers take different paths in their career and those roads don’t always come together,” said Cotto, on the prospect of facing Martinez earlier in his career.

“If someone would have told me that I would be fighting for a world championship at 160 pounds four years ago I would have not thought that possible. But here I am looking to make history – becoming the first Puerto Rican to win world titles in four different weight divisions.

“This is the kind of fight that always has been talked about and now is becoming a reality. I think it is a perfect timing to make it happen. We both have had our moments over our careers. I feel good and satisfied that it’s happening at this stage of my career. I feel totally renewed and with a fresh mind to come in and do my job on June 7,” said Cotto.

Cotto bounced back in impressive fashion in his last outing against Delvin Rodriguez, stopping him in the third round, having returned from two back-to-back defeats against leading names Floyd Mayweather and Austin Trout, prior to the win last October.

Long known and revered for his fan friendly style, Cotto is well aware of the anticipation and excitement building around this weekend’s historical showdown, as he looks to prove he is still very much a live wire.

“We as fighters always want to fight the best possible opponents and the best fights. We want the fans and media to be excited about the fights that we have. I now believe that this is a big fight and people want to see it, I’m not sure that was the case a few years back,” Cotto said.

“I believe that I’ve given the fans the best fights that I can. I fought some of the best fighters at 140, 147 and 154 pounds and now here I am facing the best at 160. For me boxing has always been about challenges and this is one more fight that proves that point.

“The fact that this fight is taking place now is just destiny, nothing to do with politics or avoidance it’s just the right time to do this fight and to enjoy two great fighters getting in the ring and showing who the best is.

“I am ready to make history and to prove once more that I am still one of the best fighters in the world,” said Cotto.

The hard-hitting Cotto is enjoying a period of rejuvenation under Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach who he linked up with following the defeat to Trout at the end of 2012.

With the esteemed Roach in his corner, the Puerto Rican is under no doubts that he will be victorious come fight night.

“He has a complete vision and sense about what a fighter thinks. We have both developed a great relationship based on respect for each other. He knows me very well and knows what I may think in certain moments,” said Cotto

“It has been a great experience working together with him. Ever since day one I felt very much at home with him and understood what I need to do.

“He had a big win last October in Orlando, Florida against Delvin Rodriguez, and now on Saturday in New York we will have a huge victory, that both of us will celebrate,” he said.

Tonight from 7pm BoxNation will air episode one of ‘24/7: Martinez vs. Cotto’ delving into the lives of two of boxing’s best names ahead of their June 7th megafight.

Martinez vs. Cotto is live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky 437/490HD & Virgin 546) this Saturday night at 2am. Visit www.boxnation.com to subscribe.

Rising Star, Emmanuel Lartey, and Stevie Forbes Headline in Tacoma

Tacoma, WA (June 2, 2014) – Welterweight contenders, Emmanuel “Ice Cold” Lartey (15-2-1, 7 KOs), and the Northwest’s own former IBF super featherweight champion, Stevie “ Two Pound” Forbes (35-12, 11 KOs), are headed to Tacoma, WA this weekend where they will headline Halquist Productions’ Battle at the Boat 96 at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, WA. Six undercard fights featuring the Northwest’s premier boxing talent are also scheduled throughout the night.

Tickets for Battle at the Boat 96, scheduled for Saturday, June 7th, are still available and can be purchased at the Emerald Queen Casino box office and all Ticketmaster outlets. Prices start at $25.

Lartey is looking to rebound after recent setbacks against two of boxing’s flashiest prospects, Errol Spence Jr. and Felix Diaz. Raised in Ghana and currently fighting out of New York City, Lartey showed he can hang with the best, fighting to a close split decision loss against 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist, Felix Diaz on Showtime’s SHOBOX. Lartey will take on the much more experienced Stevie Forbes on June 7th, while hoping to regain last year’s momentum.

The Portland, OR native, Stevie Forbes, is looking to get back to the spot light where he was earlier in his career after defeating John Brown for the IBF super featherweight title. Forbes will bring the challenge of being the most experienced boxer that Lartey has faced, quickly approaching his 50th fight.

A six fight undercard will highlight the Northwest’s best up and coming boxing talent. Notable names include three time junior Golden Gloves champion, Jeremy McCleary, seeking his fourth professional victory in as many tries. Also on the card is heavy hitting undefeated prospect, Cameron Sevilla-Rivera (3-0, 3 KOs), who will attempt to keep his knockout streak rolling.

UNDERCARD

Jeremy McCleary (3-0) vs. Napoleon Mathews (1-3, 1 KO) at 128 Lbs.

Sergio Martinez Media Day Quotes

Sergio_Martinez
NEW YORK, NY – (6/2/14) – World Boxing Council (WBC)/The Ring middleweight champion and Argentina’s favorite son, SERGIO “Maravilla” MARTÍNEZ, held his final media day earlier this afternoon ahead of his upcoming world title defense this Saturday, and the most eagerly anticipated boxing event of 2014 against three-division world champion and the Pride of Puerto Rico, MIGUEL COTTO.

Hundreds of media members and even more fans turned out Modell’s Sporting Goods flagship store in Times Square, just block from where Martinez will meet Cotto on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden, to get a glimpse of Martinez. Martinez answered questions for the media before performing an intense 30 minute workout, which showed the champion to be in absolutely phenomenal shape ahead of his upcoming title defense. Following his work out, Martinez sat and signed autographs and took photos with every single one of his adoring fans that had come out to show their support.

Below are some brief quotes from Martinez as well as a few select photos from both the media work out, and the Empire State Building, where Martinez took photos with his opponent Miguel Cotto earlier in the afternoon, before heading over to his workout.

SERGIO MARTINEZ: I love New York City. It is one of my favorite cities in the world. I am so excited to be here and fight at one of the most famous arenas in the entire world. This is a dream come true for me.

Camp was phenomenal. The gym was excellent, Miami was perfect. This is the best training camp that I have ever had in my entire career. I said it before and I am saying it again, there is no possible way that Cotto will make it out of the 9th round.

On Freddie Roach predicting a KO victory for Cotto:
Freddie Roach is excellent at telling jokes and this is one of the best jokes he has ever told.

Gingras balancing life both in and out of the ring

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (June 2nd, 2014) — For someone who’s been through every fight imaginable, there’s not much Rich Gingras can’t handle in or out of the ring.

As the Lincoln, R.I., light heavyweight prepares for his next title fight Friday night at Twin River Casino, he’s handling personal and professional battles that have made the past three and a half weeks the busiest of his life.

In addition to his New England Light Heavyweight title bout against Jaime Velazquez in the eight-round main event of CES Boxing’s “Unstoppable” card Friday, June 6th, 2014, Gingras (13-4-1, 8 KOs) is also launching the N.E. branch of Rock Steady Boxing, aimed toward helping people with Parkinson’s Disease, while simultaneously preparing for his first fitness competition just 22 days after the fight.

“I’m trying to exercise all these different avenues in my life,” Gingras said, “and I’m having a good time doing it.”

What might weigh down most people doesn’t seem to affect Gingras, who often finds himself in the middle of more than one project at the same time, whether it’s opening his own gym, preparing for a fight or supporting his wife, Alyssa, who recently earned her World Beauty Fitness & Fashion (WBFF) pro card in her first competition.

Overcoming obstacles is part of Gingras’ allure; he spent most of his life without his father, who died when he was a teenager, and dodged trouble throughout childhood before becoming a successful businessman, father and husband.

Watching his wife win at Fitness Atlantic in April motivated Gingras to give it a try in hopes that he, too, can earn his pro card on his first attempt June 28th in Boston and compete nationally in August with his wife at The WBFF Worlds in Las Vegas.

So now Gingras is packing on the muscle to fight at 175 pounds Friday against Velazquez (11-6-2, 6 KOs), a native of nearby Central Falls who’s back in the ring just four months after challenging former two-time world champion Glen Johnson at Twin River.

“People say I’m crazy for doing a fitness competition and boxing in the same month, or that’s a counterproductive because I’m putting a lot of wear and tear on my body,” Gingras said, “but most people can’t do one or the other, let alone both.

“I’m strong now from lifting. My speed hasn’t suffered at all. Maybe a hair, but I’m super powerful. Fighting in the light heavyweight division will help me.”

This is a unique challenge for Gingras, who actually fought as a heavyweight in the amateurs and began his professional career as a cruiserweight before slimming down to 168 pounds to face Vladine Biosse for the N.E. Super Middleweight Title in 2013. Now he’s aiming for 175, carefully making sure he doesn’t gain too much muscle prior to fight night before bulking up to 188 by the time he hits Boston for his WBFF debut.

A late bloomer in boxing, Gingras made up for lost time by fighting six times in the past two years after ending a three-year hiatus in 2012. His dedication to fitness and nutrition may have added a few years to his career. Even if he earns his pro card later this month and competes nationally, Gingras still intends to continue boxing as long as his body can handle the workload.

“I still have time left,” Gingras said. “I treat myself young. I’m healthy, and my body rewards me for it. I started late, so I don’t have a lot of miles on me, but I’m 33 and getting busier by the day.”

While training for his fight and the upcoming competition, Gingras also launched his own division of Rock Steady Boxing, which will be based out of his Fight 2 Fitness Gym in Pawtucket, R.I. The purpose of Rock Steady is to provide non-contact boxing and fitness training for those with Parkinson’s Disease to help improve their quality of life.

“New England happens to have the highest population of people with Parkinson’s, and there was nothing around here like that for them,” Gingras said. “It’s going to be huge. It’s something I’m real proud to be a part of.”

Gingras hasn’t fought since losing to Manfredo in November. The time off turned out to be a blessing in disguise, not only healing Gingras’ “fighting spirit,” but also allowing him to become more invested in other opportunities outside of the ring.

“I put a lot of work into boxing last year,” he said. “I trained my ass off for fights, between fighting [Biosse], then preparing for a fight I ended up not having [in September] and then fighting [Manfredo], I went seven months without a break.”

Refreshed, but not necessarily rested, Gingras hopes to prove Friday night that despite everything else going on in his life, boxing is still his No. 1 passion. It’ll be a tough test against the savvy Velazquez, but it’s a challenge Gingras is willing to accept. He’s not one to back down from a fight.

Pawtucket, R.I., middleweight Thomas Falowo (11-2, 7 KOs), fresh off a win in February, will battle Albuquerque, N.M., native Jose Ramirez, a veteran of 24 fights, in a six-round bout; and unbeaten Boston heavyweight Donnie Palmer (4-0-1, 4 KOs) will fight John Orr (1-3) of Kansas City, Mo., in a four-round bout.

Nielsen disappointed with defeat, vows to come back stronger

Patrick Nielsen (22-1, 11 KOs) was unable to complete his Moscow mission. The 23 year-old southpaw travelled to the Russian capital with the hope of capturing the interim WBA World Middleweight title from undefeated champion Dmitry Chudinov (13-0-2, 8 KOs). However after twelve rounds of action fought in front of a partisan crowd at the Mytishchi Arena the Dane found himself behind on all the judges’ scorecards.

‘’Tonight was not my night,’’ said Nielsen. ‘’I have no one to blame but myself. I was not committed enough in training and I now realise that I need to do a lot more in camp to become a champion. This defeat has made me hungrier and I promise that I will come back stronger.”

Said promoter Nisse Sauerland: ‘’It was a tough fight and Patrick had signs of success, but you could tell that he was not fit for the twelve rounds and that is disappointing. I hope that Patrick learns a lesson from this and dedicates himself in training. I still believe that a fit Patrick beats Chudinov. If he is willing to make the necessary changes we will certainly try to secure a rematch.’’

There was some Danish success in Moscow. Patrick’s younger brother Micki Nielsen improved to 14-0 with the third-round technical knockout of Igor Pylypenko. Having been down in each of the first two rounds, a left-hook to the body in the third proved too much for Pylypenko, whose corner threw in the towel to spare him any further punishment

Dmitry Chudiniv: 72 kg

Guillermo Rigondeaux & Zou Shiming Headline July 19 Show in Macau

Guillermo Rigondeaux
MACAO (May 31, 2014) – Two-time Chinese Olympic gold medallist and national icon ZOU SHIMING and undefeated unified junior featherweight world champion and Cuban sensation GUILLERMO “El Chacal” RIGONDEAUX will headline Champions of Gold – world championship boxing’s return to The The Venetian® Macao’s Cotai Arena. Promoted by Top Rank® and Sands China Ltd., in association with Tecate, PS4, Caribe Promotions and Foreman Boys Promotions, Champions of Gold will take place Saturday, July 19.

Tickets for Champions of Gold are on sale now and can be purchased via Cotai Ticketing™; prices start at HKD/MOP 80, with ferry and hotel packages also available. Featherweight Fury ticketholders will want to act fast to take advantage of a 30 per cent early bird discount*, available for three days only, until June 2 (HKD/MOP 80 tickets excluded).

Rigondeaux will be defending his titles against top-five contender and two-time world title challenger SOD LOOKNONGYANTOY of Thailand. The undercard will feature former three-time world champion BRIAN VILORIA, undefeated NABF/NABO super middleweight champion GILBERTO “Zurdo” RAMIREZ, 2012 Russian Olympic gold medallist EGOR MEKHONTSEV, plus local favourites REX “The Wonder Kid” TSO, IK YANG and “The Macao Kid” NG KUOK KUN, each in separate bouts.

Zou (4-0, 1 KO), from Guizhou, China, and trained by Hall of Famer Freddie Roach, won his professional debut April 6, 2013 at Fists of Gold, via a dominant four-round unanimous decision over gritty Eleazar Valenzuela. He followed that up with six-round unanimous decision victories last year over Jesus Ortega and Juan Toscano July 27 at Fists of Gold II and November 24 at The Clash in Cotai, respectively, and celebrated his 2014 debut with his first professional knockout February 22 at Ring of Gold, stopping Yokthong Kokietgym in the seventh round. All of his professional bouts have taken place at the Cotai Arena. One of the most popular Olympic athletes in China, Zou was the world’s greatest amateur light flyweight, capturing gold medals in the World Amateur Championships in 2005, 2007 and 2011, along with gold medals in the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympic Games. He also owns an Olympic bronze medal from the 2004 games, making him his nation’s first Olympic medallist in boxing as well as its first boxing gold medallist in the World Amateur Championships and the Olympics. He will be graduating to a 10-round bout against an opponent who will be named shortly, taking Zou one step closer to a world title challenge.

Rigondeaux (13-0, 8 KOs), of Miami, Florida, returns to the ring making his 2014 debut. Last year he unified the World Boxing Association (WBA) and World Boxing Organization (WBO) 122-pound titles by defeating 2012 Fighter of the Year Nonito Donaire April 13, 2013, at a sold-out Radio City Music Hall in New York. Rigondeaux thoroughly dominated Donaire via a unanimous decision victory, ending his 12-year, 30-bout winning streak, as well as claiming his WBO junior featherweight title. Rigondeaux had a stellar amateur career, winning Olympic gold medals in 2004 and 2000, World Amateur Championship titles in 2005 and 2001, and Pan American Games gold medals in 2005 and 2003, all at 119 pounds, before leaving Cuba to embark on a professional career which began in Miami in 2009. In only his seventh professional fight where both fighters scored knockdowns, Rigondeaux captured the WBA interim super bantamweight title, winning a tough split decision over the vastly more experienced former world champion Ricardo Cordoba in 2010. After successfully defending the interim title in 2011 with a first-round knockout of previously undefeated former European super bantamweight champion Willie Casey, Rigondeaux won the WBA world super bantamweight championship with a sixth-round knockout of previously undefeated defending champion Rico Ramos January 20, 2012. Rigondeaux has successfully defended that title four times since then, blasting once-beaten Teon Kennedy in the fifth round, which included Kennedy suffering five knockdowns en route to the loss, and winning a dominant unanimous decision over once-beaten contender Roberto Marroquin, both in 2012, besting Donaire in their April 2013 title unification fight and most recently, defeating former two-time world champion Joseph Agbeko December 7 via a dominant unanimous decision.

Looknongyantoy (61-2-1, 25 KOs), of Srithep, Thailand, has twice challenged for the WBO junior featherweight, losing to Daniel De Leon both times, in 2005 and 2006. Since then he has fashioned an eight-year, 35-bout unbeaten streak, which has included Asian, WBO Asia-Pacific and WBA Pan Asian 122-pound title victories. He is currently world-rated No. 5 by the WBO and No. 8 by the WBA.

Viloria (32-4, 19 KOs), from Waipahu, Hawaii, was a 2000 U.S. Olympian. He captured his first world title in 2005, knocking out Eric Ortiz in the first round to become the World Boxing Council (WBC) light flyweight champion. He held the title for nearly one year before losing it. In 2008, he captured the International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior flyweight title, knocking out Ulises Solis in the 11th round. After losing the title in his second defence the following year, Viloria moved up one weight division and captured the WBO flyweight title via unanimous decision over Julio Miranda in 2011. The following year, he unified the title with a 10th-round knockout of WBA champion Hernan Marquez. He lost the titles on the Fists of Gold II card, losing a split decision to Juan Estrada.

Ramirez (28-0, 22 KOs), of Mazatlan, Mexico, is world-rated No. 2 by the WBC, No. 3 by the WBO, No. 6 by the WBA and No. 7 by the IBF. A sensational young contender, Ramirez, 22, has won both his 2014 bouts by knockout. In his last outing, April 11, he captured the NABF and NABO super middleweight titles via a fifth-round knockout of two-time world title challenger Yovanny Lorenzo.

Mekhontsev (3-0, 3 KOs), of Asbest, Russia, won his pro debut last December 4, knocking out Peter Cajigas in the third round. On February 22, Mekhontsev made his Cotai Arena debut at Ring of Gold, knocking out undefeated Jaritram Atthaporn in the second round. His most recent fight was a third-round stoppage of Dwayne Williams April 11. Trained by his father Leonid, Mekhontsev captured the Olympic light heavyweight gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games and as a heavyweight he won gold at the 2009 World Amateur Championships and the 2010 and 1008 European Amateur Championships.

Hong Kong’s Tso (12-0, 8 KOs), the undefeated WBC Asian super flyweight and WBO Asia Pacific junior bantamweight champion recently named 2013 WBC Asia Prospect of the Year, Yang (13-0, 8 KOs) of Dalian, China and local favourite Ng (4-0, 2 KOs) will be featured in separate bouts on the undercard against opponents who will be announced soon.

Tickets to the July 19 Champions of Gold can be purchased at all Cotai Ticketing box offices*, and are available in seven categories, ranging from HKD/MOP 80 to HKD/MOP 4,680. Blues Pills“ to rock Schwerin ahead of Braehmer vs. Bolonti

Before the going gets tough inside the ring when Juergen Braehmer defends his WBA Light Heavyweight Championship against Roberto Bolonti on June 7, some hard rock will take center stage. Newcomers “Blues Pills” are going to perform their hit single “Devil Man” at the Sport- und Kongresshalle Schwerin, Germany to get fight fans in the right mood for the local hero’s homecoming bout. Moreover, Braehmer likes the song: “I love some hard riffs to tune up myself for a fight and that’s what I get.”

Blues Pills is currently hyped as the “Next Big Thing” in all of hard rock, with one band member not even in his twenties. Guitarist Dorian Sorriaux is a merely 17 years old. Lead singer Elin Larsson (20) says that they will enjoy their performance on June 7: “We are really excited and looking forward to get the crowd going.“

As the Band is young, so are they international. Larsson is from Sweden, Sorriaux hails from France and bass player Zack Anderson as well as drummer Cory Berry were born in the USA. Blues Pills will release their premiere album named after the band on July 25.

Tickets for the fight night at the Sport- und Kongresshalle Schwerin, Germany on June 7 are available via www.eventim.de.

DOMONIQUE DOLTON INJURED, HUGO CENTENO WILL NOW FACE GERARDO IBARRA IN MAIN EVENT ON SHOBOX: THE NEW GENERATION FRIDAY, JUNE 6, FROM FANTASY SPRINGS RESORT CASINO IN INDIO, CALIF.

INDIO, Calif., (May 30, 2014) – Undefeated Domonique Dolton suffered a hand injury in training and has been forced to withdraw from his fight with Hugo “The Boss” Centeno Jr. next Friday, June 6, on ShoBox: The New Generation live on SHOWTIME® (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) from Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, Calif. Undefeated Houston, Texas’ Gerardo Ibarra to take Dolton’s place.

Gerardo “Tin Tin” Ibarra (14-0, 8 KOs), 5-foot-9, 23-year-old boxer-puncher, is taking a huge leap in class for this, his first major opportunity as a professional. He is coming off a shutout, eight-round decision victory over William Johnson last Feb. 15.

Before turning pro in July 2008, Ibarra was a solid amateur, going 120-23, while winning and competing in tournaments in America and abroad. He won in the 2005 National Junior Olympic tournament, defeating undefeated pro Gary Russell Jr. along the way.

“To put it simply, I love fighting,” the confident, determined Ibarra said. “Boxing is about opportunities and this is a great platform to showcase my talent on a national network and I promise that after the fight everyone will know who “TinTin” is.”

In the ShoBox co-feature, New York City phenom Eddie “E Boy” Gomez (16-0, 10 KOs) faces Francisco Santana (19-3-1, 7 KOs) of Santa Barbara, Calif., in a 10-round junior middleweight match. The streaking Santana has won seven in a row.

The Game 365:Miguel Cotto on MSG Networks

Miguel Cotto
MSG Network kicks off the Miguel Cotto v. Sergio Martinez fight week with a new episode of The Game 365. MSG’s Fran Healy recently sat down with Miguel Cotto and Freddie Roach at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles for the brand new episode which premieries on MSG + Monday night and on MSG on Tuesday with both airing at 7:30 pm. Below are several quotes from the half hour program.

The Game 365:Miguel Cotto

Miguel Cotto
On Madison Square Garden:
“It’s my second home … being there is a marvelous adventure.”

On fighting for fans:
“I know they follow Miguel Cotto. I know they’ve always been rooting for me and when I step into the ring I fight for them too.”

“Having all those Puerto Ricans rooting for me during the fight is going to help me, but I have to be focused on my work.”

On walking from dressing room to ring on June 7:
“It all depends on the work I made here at the gym. If I feel prepared enough for anything Sergio can bring me … then it’s going to be an easy road from the locker room to the ring.”

On retiring:
“I’m getting older, my kids are growing and I want to be there for them. I spend too much time in here (gym) and I lose time with them. Its close, my time to retire, its close. I’m going to enjoy the last part of my career.”

Freddie Roach
On training and key to fight:
“I try to duplicate a lot of what the opponents do. He (Martinez) likes to rest on the ropes with his hands up high and when he does that of course the body shots are right there. I feel that is the key to this fight, if you break the body down the head will fall.”

On how much of fight is physical and mental:
“I say about 90% of the fight game is mental. It’s who can pull it off, who can make their game plan work, who can execute the game plan best. Everyone gets in shape and gets ready for the fight…our people are 100% ready and then it’s the mental side. That’s what we work on a lot, the sports psychology the positive thinking and making the right moves at the right time.”

“FIGHT FOR PEACE” – MANUEL CHARR DEDICATES HIS FIGHT AGAINST ALEXANDER POVETKIN TO PEACE IN SYRIA

alexander_povetkin_image
When “Diamond Boy” Manuel Charr and former WBA world heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin step into the ring at Luzhniki Arena in Moscow (Russia) tonight (live on live.360fights.com / broadcast starts at noon EST / 6pm Central European Time) they will not only fight for the WBC international championship. According to Manuel Charr the fight will also be dedicated to the peace process in Syria.

“I respect Alexander Povetkin. He is a likable guy and a great champion. We will not only fight against each other in the ring – we also fight together for peace in the world and especially in Syria”, says Charr. “It is an honor to fight for the WBC international championship because the WBC has always supported the ‘Fight for Peace’ all around the world. And I know that WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman is expecially concerned about the Middle East – just like his father Don José has always been.”

José Sulaiman who passed away in January would have celebrated his 83th birthday today. So the fight between Charr and Povetkin is not only dedicated to peace but also to the longtime WBC President. The show in Moscow also features the WBC Silver cruiserweight championship bout between Rakhim Chakhkiev and Santander Silgado from Colombia and the WBC CISBB welterweight championship bout between Aslanbek Kozaev and Igor Faniyan from Ukraine.

In Germany, Austria, Switzerland, former Yugoslavia, Syria and the USA the show will be broadcasted live on live.360fights.com (starting at 12pm noon EST / 6pm Central European time).

ALEX “THE BRICK CITY BULLET” PEREZ RETURNS TO HEADLINE KEA BOXING’S, “BOXING AT THE BIRCHWOOD” IN WHIPPANY, NEW JERSEY THIS SATURDAY MAY 31

NEWARK, NJ (May 30, 2014) – Alex “The Brick City Bullet” Perez, 17-1, 9 KO’s is an old school, all action fighter who wants nothing more than to fight as often as possible. Unfortunately, the business of boxing has often worked against the tall southpaw. Perez takes great pride in his craft and has always had faith that he will become a World Champion. He makes it very clear that he wants the biggest fights out there as often as possible at this point in his career to show the world who he really is.

After a year of inactivity Perez returns to the ring this Saturday night to fight another tough competitor in Jeremiah Wiggins, 10-2, 5 KO’s on KEA Boxing’s, “Boxing at the Birchwood” series. Wiggins is tough fighter who was undefeated at 10-0 prior to his last two fights. In those two fights Wiggins went to war with two undefeated rising stars and dropped and almost stopped both of them.. In his most recent fight with Julian Williams, who is now 16-0, Wiggins had Williams down, in serious trouble and in a spot where the referee was close to stopping it, but Williams weathered the storm and later went on to stop Wiggins despite his protests.

Perez and Wiggins are two fighters who both always come to fight and who both have something to prove. Again Perez who is a natural at 147 pound fighter has had several opponents pull out of this date and is being asked to fight a dangerous fighter who is a junior middleweight, a full weight class above….but Perez is hungry to take out any obstacles on his way to a belt in the welterweight division and the Brick City Bullet is ready for whoever and whatever comes his way.

The Perez vs. Wiggins bout will headline KEA Boxing’s return of their Boxing at the Birchwood Series which was extremely popular almost a decade ago before KEA started to do more shows in several states and locations in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and South Carolina. Their return to their roots in Morris County New Jersey features an excellent undercard and the Birchwood Manor is probably the nicest intimate venue to watch professional Boxing in all of New Jersey.

KEA’s president, Andre Kut is very excited to be back and has also fought through great adversity to consistently bring the area top notch world class professional boxing. He has had to overcome many obstacles to do this, but has not let anything or anyone stand in his way.

It was very unfortunate that in Alex Perez’s’ biggest fight to date, he suffered his lone defeat in a bout for the NABF welterweight title against world rated Antonin Decarie. Boxing is an unforgiving sport where big opportunities are very difficult to come by, and while no one wants to hear excuses, everyone involved with that fight was aware that he came down with a stomach virus the day of the weigh in.

While several members of team Perez pleaded with him to pull out, cooler heads did not prevail and the throwback Brick City warrior decided to go in with all he had. Unfortunately all he had that night was a dehydrated calorie deprived body that was unable to put on any weight after the weigh in the day before and his heart and mental toughness were not enough to overcome the illness and physical handicap that he gallantly tried to overcome against the very capable Decarie who fought a great fight.

Perez , who had been the most active of his career in fighting and defeating good opponents leading up to that night under promoter DiBella Entertainment, pleaded with everyone around him for a rematch. However, while the fight made sense in the eyes of Perez, no one else was interested in it at that time, and unfortunately Perez and DiBella parted ways. Perez wanted a tough fight back to show the world the Decarie fight was an aberration. He reunited with KEA Boxing in New Jersey and a fight with Kenny Abril who was coming off of the biggest victory of his career over top contender, Dennis Laurente would be a tough fight and a big test coming off of the TKO loss.

Perez would dominate Abril over 8 rounds in a very impressive performance and was very eager to stay busy moving forward.
This is where the business side of boxing would again stand in his way. Without being signed by a promoter, Perez has known he needed to stay ready to fight and has trained for the last year, but he has only seen potential opportunities for fights that have fallen apart, often because people just do not want to fight the tall southpaw. His strong faith that he is in fact destined for greatness has remained fully intact, but the 32 year old Perez wants nothing more than to just be given the opportunity to show the world who he is on a regular basis.

Most people in boxing have heard by now, Perez survived a stabbing, a shooting and was at one point was falsely accused of committing a very serious aggravated assault/armed robbery that could have landed him in jail for 20+ years if his close knit, very small team didn’t band together and make sure justice was brought to light.

His lawyer, Dan Serratelli who has trained with Perez since he was a teenager took the case pro bono worked diligently on the case and eventually all charged were dropped. Perez has stated time and time again, he has tunnel vision and will not let any opponent or circumstances stand in his way. He takes great pride in giving the fans what they want and this Saturdays fight with Wiggins is sure to be a fan friendly war that should open a lot of eyes.

Perez has been featured on a documentary leading up to this fight called “Behind the Brick City Bullet” which was produced by John Archibald of Resolution Sports and all episodes can be seen on www.BrickCityBoxing.com and www.Ressports.com

The card will also feature an exciting undercard featured the son of former world title contender, Bobby Gunn…. Bobby Gunn Jr. , Anthony Jones, Tyrell Wright, Joe Cusumano, Connie Viruet and several other New Jersey rising stars. The show will also feature the beautiful ladies of www.Roundcardmodels.com

Tickets are priced at :
VIP: $100, Ringside $75, Reserved $55 or GA $40
