HEAVYWEIGHTS DAWEJKO, RIDEOUT COLLIDE ON MAY 16 FIGHT CARD AS 2300 ARENA IN SOUTH PHILLY

Philadelphia, PA—Heavyweights Joey Dawejko and Mark Rideout meet over eight rounds—or less—in an all-Philadelphia match on Friday evening, May 16, at the 2300 Arena in South Philadelphia.clip_image010

Topping the seven-bout card is an eight-round between undefeated junior welterweight prospects Naim Nelson, of Philadelphia, and Jerome Rodriguez, of Trenton, NJ.
The seven-bout card program marks the first pro fight card at the 2300 Arena since Jan. 21, 2012, when then-unknown heavyweight prospect Bryant Jennings upset Maurice Byarm in a battle of undefeated Philadelphians to open the NBC Sports Network Fight Night series.
Formerly known as the ECW Arena, the New Alhambra and later the Asylum Arena, the 2300 Arena, located at Swanson & Ritner Streets in South Philadelphia, has undergone renovations and eventually will seat close to 1,700 spectators.
First fight May 16 is set for 7.30p.m. The card is being promoted by Peltz Boxing and BAM Boxing in association with SugarHouse Casino.
Dawejko (right), 23, comes into this fight off the biggest win of his career, an eight-round decision over former contender Derric Rossy, of New York, on Jan. 25 in Atlantic City, NJ.
clip_image012Dawejko is 9-3-2, 3 K0s, but this will be only his fifth fight in Philadelphia since turning pro in 2009.
He has boxed in Canada, California, Illinois and Connecticut, taking fights on short notice for short money. It all seemed pointless until Dawejko’s recent win over Rossy.
“I know Mark from the amateurs and I was able to beat him when we fought,” Dawejko said, “but I know the pros are a different story. I’m looking forward to fighting in my hometown again in front of my fans. It should be a good fight.”
Part of Dawejko’s preparation for the May 16 fight is in Austria, where he was summoned last week to serve as a sparring partner for Waldimir Klitschko, who is defending his world heavyweight championship belts against Alex Leapai, of Samoa, on April 26 in Germany. Lepai is 6-foot tall, short for a heavyweight; Dawejko is 5-foot-10.
Rideout (left), 24, is 4-0-2, 1 K0, since turning pro midway through 2012.
In his last fight Jan. 24 in Atlantic City, Rideout boxed a four-round draw with unbeaten Fred Latham, of Pittsburgh, PA. Ironically, it was 24 hours before Dawejko’s big win over Rossy across town.
“I am excited about the opportunity to get back in action and be in my first eight-rounder,” Rideout said. “My last couple of fights have ended in draws, but not this fight.
“Me and Joey fought in the amateurs and he beat me, but this is the pros and I’m getting this win. I respect all of Joey’s accomplishments as an amateur, but this is my time and it will be a long night for Joey.”
Five additional fights complete the May 16 lineup.

Cohen Congratulates Usmanee for Gutty Performance Against Beltran

Greg Cohen of Greg Cohen Promotions wishes to congratulate his fighter, Afghani-Canadian super featherweight contender Arash Usmanee (20-2-1, 10 KOs) who stepped up in weight on short notice to face WBO #1 ranked Raymundo Beltran (29-6-1, 17 KOs) for the WBO NABO Lightweight title last Saturday night, April 12.

Fighting in the co-main event of the HBO Pay-Per-View card featuring the Timothy Bradley vs. Manny Pacquiao rematch at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Usmanee put in a brave performance against the larger Beltran, but became understandably fatigued as the fight progressed.

Although it was Beltran who was awarded the unanimous decision by scores of 118-110, 117-111 and 117-111, Usmanee made many new fans with his courage in taking on a larger man on short notice and hanging in for 12 tough rounds.

“Arash never ceases to amaze me with his toughness,” said Cohen. “How many fighters in the world could step up a weight class on less than a week’s notice and go toe-to-toe for 12 grueling rounds with a top fighter like Ray Beltran?”

With the victory, Beltran earned the right to face unbeaten WBO lightweight titleholder Terence Crawford, while Usmanee will return to his natural weight of 130 lbs and continue to campaign for another shot at the world championship.

“Arash will fight anyone in the world at super featherweight,” continued Cohen. “He beat (top contender) Rances Barthelemy everywhere but the scorecards and had a draw with (current IBF champ) Argenis Mendez. He’s an elite super featherweight and his short-notice foray into the lightweight division, and the guts he showed doing it, only further solidify what a world-class warrior he truly he is. I’m very proud of him and he will be back at 130 lbs very soon.”

NABA SUPER FEATHERWEIGHT CHAMPION LOGAN MCGUINNESS PUT HIS TITLE ON THE LINE AGAINST MIKE OLIVER ON THURSDAY, JUNE 5 LIVE ON FOX SPORTS 1 AND FOX DEPORTES FROM THE HOUSE OF BLUES IN BOSTON

BOSTON (April 14, 2014) – After an exciting night of fights in Boston on St. Patrick’s Day, Golden Boy Promotions will return to this boxing rich town to team up with Murphy’s Boxing U.S.A and Back East Promotions on Thursday, June 5 with a stacked card at the House of Blues featuring a title defense and a stellar lineup of New England’s top prospects. In the 10-round Golden Boy Live! main event featured on FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes, Ontario, Canada’s Logan McGuinness faces one of New England’s finest, Mike “The Machine” Oliver, in a showdown for McGuinness’ NABA Super Featherweight Title.

Plus, unbeaten heavyweight Alexis Santos from Lawrence, Mass. looks to follow up his March 17 stoppage over Sylvester Barron with another big knockout against an opponent to be named in an eight-round bout. Also, in non-televised super middleweight action, Gary O’Sullivan and Mark Deluca will be featured in separate bouts, welterweight Rashidi Ellis and cruiserweight Chris Traietti will face opponents to be named in six-round and eight round bouts respectively. Vinnie Carita will face Boston police officer Tyrone Smith in a rematch following their exciting draw in March.

Fighting out of Orangeville, Ontario, Canada, Logan McGuinness (20-0-1, 9 KOs) is a top Canadian prospect that expects to take his game to the next level in 2014. A professional since 2008, the 26-year-old won the NABA Championship at 126, 130 and 135 pounds. Now he expects to make a run for a world title shot but has to get past the tough Oliver first.

Connecticut southpaw Mike “The Machine” Oliver (26-5-1, 8 KOs) has long thrilled fans in the New England area with his technical boxing skills and ring savvy. The Marine officer owns victories over the likes Gary Stark Jr., Al Seeger and former World Champions Mauricio “Pintoso” Pastrana and Cruz Carbajal. Now, the 34-year-old hopes to give McGuinness a boxing lesson on June 5.

One of the best big men to emerge from New England since former Heavyweight World Champion John Ruiz, 24-year-old Alexis Santos (13-0, 11 KOs) looks to be on his way to big things in boxing’s glamour division. A professional since 2009, Santos has ended six of his knockout victories in a single round and with his power and determination he is ready for whoever steps up to fight him.

Cork, Ireland’s Gary O’Sullivan (16-1, 10 KOs) got a late start in the professional game, but as an Irish and former WBO International Champion, he’s making up for lost time in rapid-fire fashion as he hopes to follow in the footsteps of Steve Collins as a world titleholder.

Quincy native Mark “The Italian Bazooka” DeLuca (9-0, 6 KOs) isn’t just a promising up and comer, but a rising star as a trainer in the New England area as well. Owner of five wins in two rounds or less, the 26-year-old power puncher will be bringing the heat on June 5.

Unbeaten in his first five professional bouts, Lynn’s Rashidi Ellis (5-0, 3 KOs) is a 20-year-old phenom with “star” written all over him. Flashy, fast and powerful, Ellis makes every fight look like a main event showcase.

Quincy’s Chris Traietti (16-3, 12 KOs) is a veteran of the Iraq war and will showcase his fighting spirit in the ring on June 5. Winner of eight of his last nine bouts, with the only loss coming against former world title challenger Edwin Rodriguez, the popular 28-year-old is looking forward to performing for Boston fans once again.

Twenty-nine-year-old Vinnie “Kid Sal” Carita (9-1-1, 9 KOs) is another fan favorite in the Boston area and with all nine of his professional wins coming by knockout, that’s no surprise. Carita will be seeking to set the record straight when he faces Boston police officer Tyrone Smith (5-8-3, 2 KOs) as they face off for the second time in four months.

Tickets, priced at $150 (reserved seating), $100 (reserved seating) and $45 (general admission) are on sale now and are available for purchase at the House of Blues Box Office, the Orpheum Theater box office or online at http://m.concerts.livenation.com/event/01004C389CC1B5BE, www.murphysboxingusa.com or www.backeastpromotions.com.

Golden Boy LIVE: Rios vs. Cancio Tonight at 9 p.m. ET on Fight Network

Toronto – Fight Network, the world’s premier 24/7 television channel dedicated to complete coverage of combat sports, presents Golden Boy Live! from the “Windy City” as Chicago will be the site of one of spring’s most intriguing showdowns from UIC Pavilion with unbeaten Ronny Rios and fellow prospect Andrew “Chango” Cancio clashing in a 10-round junior lightweight bout.
Fight Network’s live broadcast kicks off tonight, April 14, at 9 p.m. ET.

“This type of matchup is what the Golden Boy Live! series was created for and in Ronny Rios vs. Andrew Cancio we could be seeing a fight where the winner goes on to eventually become a world champion,” said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “Both of these young men know what’s at stake in this fight and it’s going to be a good one.”

In the exciting co-main event, featherweight phenom Julian “El Camaron” Ramirez faces Mexico’s Carlos Rodriguez in an 8-round fight.

A former United States’ top amateur, Ronny Rios (22-0, 10 KOs) traded his quest for Olympic Gold for a journey toward a professional championship in 2008 and he has developed into one of boxing’s top young talents. Fighting out of Santa Ana, Calif., the 24-year-old Rios emerged as a future contender in 2012 when he won the NABF featherweight title by defeating former World Champion Rico Ramos. Now competing at 130 pounds, Rios will make his 2014 debut against Cancio this April.

Blythe, California’s Andrew “Chango” Cancio (15-2-2, 11 KOs) doesn’t just want to win his April 14 fight to move up the junior lightweight rankings and hand Rios his first loss, but also wants to pick up California bragging rights in the process. An eight-year pro, Cancio has won seven of his last eight bouts, with wins over longtime contender Rocky Juarez and up-and-comer Jerry Belmontes establishing the 25-year-old as a fighter to watch. Now it’s time to deliver in his first Golden Boy Live! main event and he’s ready for the challenge.

Fighting out of East Los Angeles, Julian Ramirez’ (10-0, 6 KOs) skills in the ring have made him a fan favorite. A speedy southpaw with fight-ending power, the 20-year-old “El Camaron” is coming off of an impressive eight-round win over noted spoiler Derrick Wilson in January that proved Ramirez is ready for a veteran like Rodriguez.

Los Mochis, Sinaloa’s Carlos Rodriguez (22-13-3, 10 KOs) is a rugged competitor who brings the heat every time he steps into the ring. A professional for over 12 years, he earned two regional titles at flyweight before moving up in weight. Winner of six of his last nine matches, Rodriguez looks to put a dent in Ramirez’ future plans should he win their bout on April 14.

Rios vs. Cancio is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and 8 Count Productions and is sponsored by Corona and O’Reilly Auto Parts. Fight Network’s live broadcast airs live at 9 p.m. ET.

Skoglund retains European (EU) Light Heavyweight Title, Yigit defeats Bruun

Erik Skoglund successfully defended his European (EU) Light Heavyweight Title with a ninth-round stoppage of Danilo D’Agata at the Nordic Fight Night in Esbjerg, Denmark.

The 22 year-old outclassed his awkward opponent to remain undefeated and secure his twentieth professional victory.

‘’It was a good fight,’’ said Skoglund. ‘’D’Agata was a tricky opponent. He had a good jab and was difficult to reach. I knew that as the fight went on he would tire and I would be able to get to him. I was pleased to get the stoppage.’’

Said promoter Nisse Sauerland: ‘’This was a great win for Erik. He overcame a difficult opponent who could have potentially given him some problems. Erik has showed tonight that he is world class and I believe he is ready to fight for a bigger title.’’

Swedish Olympian Anthony Yigit was also in action, facing the previously undefeated Kasper Bruun in a Scandinavian showdown for the WBC Baltic Light Welterweight Title.

An entertaining fight was cut short due to an eye injury sustained by Bruun following an accidental clash of heads. After six rounds the judges scored the bout 58-56, 58-56 and 58-55, all in favour of Yigit.

‘’It was not the way I wanted to win,’’ said Yigit in reference to the early stoppage. ‘’But tonight I proved I am the better boxer and if the fight had carried on I am convinced I would have stopped him. I would love a rematch with Kasper, but I do not believe he will take it.”

Yigit’s coach Joey Gamache added: ‘’Anthony did exactly what we had trained to do. Had the fight gone further, he would have given Kasper even bigger problems. I think everyone could see that.’’

Manuel Charr outworks Kevin Johnson over ten

WBC #6 rated heavyweight contender Manuel Charr scored a ten round unanimous decision win over former world title challenger Kevin Johnson on Saturday night in front of 5,000 fans at Telekom Dome in Bonn, Germany. Both guys had their moments in a good action fight. Charr was the more aggressive fighter who kept on coming forward while Johnson landed a couple of decent jabs and counter punches.

While “Kingpin” Johnson seemed to land the harder shots – especially in the middle rounds – Charr earned the decision win by his greater level of overall activity. In the end the judges scored 98:92, 98:92 and 97:93 for Charr.

“I am very happy that everything worked out well”, said Charr. “What people have to understand is that I have not only been the main event fighter on this show. I also promoted and organized the whole event with a very small team of good friends. I took a big risk and worked all day and night – in the gym and in the office – to get it done. I want to thank all the people who supported me and the many fans who came to see the show. Not many fighters can fill a big venue like this without TV and without a big promoter.”

Jonson accepted defeat although he said he knew he wouldn’t get a decision in Germany no matter what he did. “I knew I had to knock him out but we are talking about a world rated fighter who is a really tough guy”, said Johnson. “I hit him with a couple of good shots but he kept moving forward. I couldn’t stop him. It’s as simple as that. And we all know that you have to knock out your opponent twice to get a decision win on the road. That’s what I tried to do. But I couldn’t get it done. I have to give my respect to Manuel and his team. They did a great job. And he is a hell of a fighter. He connected with some good shots as well. It was give and take. Congrats to him for his victory.”

In the co-feature of the night world rated middleweight contender Hamid Rahimi scored an impressive first round KO against overmatched Czech journeyman Bronislav Kubin. Although he is clearly no world class fighter Kubin is known to be a durable guy who went the distance with a lot of good opponents. But Rahimi connected with a clean right hand to the chin within the first minute of the fight. Kubin broke the count but he was back on wobbly legs. Rahimi saw his chance and took it knocking his opponent down two more times before referee Jürgen Langos waived off the fight after 1:39 minutes.

“I apologize to all fans who wanted to see a longer fight but I trained really hard for this bout and saw lots of videos of Kubin”, said Rahimi. “I knew he was taking down his hand a little bit after his jabs. So I waited for the right moment and caught him. I would have loved to fight a little longer. But when you see an opening you got to use it.”

Rahimi had made worldwide news in 2012 when he organized and promoted the first ever professional boxing show in his home country Afghanistan labeled as “Fight for Peace”. At the moment there are rumors about a WBO elimination bout between the “peace fighter” and British contender Billy Joe Saunders.

World Series of Boxing Results Cuba Domadores Defeat USA Knockouts Advances to WSB Semifinals vs. Russia

SALEM, N.H. (April 12, 2014) — Cuba Domadores defeated USA Knockouts, 3-2, in tonight’s World Series of Boxing (WSB) quarterfinals to advance in the WSB playoffs. Cuba had defeated USA in last week’s opening quarterfinals action in Havana, 5-0, and won the WSB quarterfinals by an 8-2 aggregate playoff score.

Cuba advances to the WSB semifinals to face Russian Boxing Team, which defeated Ukraine Otmas, 8-2, in the quarterfinals. Russia hosts Cuba April 25 in the opening round of the semifinals and then the action shifts to Cuba on May 2. The Cuba-Russia winner will qualify for the WSB Championship, May 30-31 (likely in London), against the other semifinals winner between the Astana Arlans Kazakhstan vs. Ajerbaijan Baku Fires.

USA’s middleweight Marlo Delgado (2-2) won a close five-round decision over Cuba’s WSB debuting Yaciel Despaigne (0-1). Delgado was a 2012 Ecuador Olympian.

Cuba’s 2012 Olympic bronze medal winner Yasner Toledo (4-1) shutout Carlos Adames, winning all five rounds on all three judges’ scorecards. WSB #2 rated lightweight Toledo used a devastating body attack to defeat his Dominican Republic opponent.

Cuba technically won the quarterfinals after the opening match in which Cuban light flyweight Yosbany Vettia (6-0) remained undefeated by winning a five-round split decision over USA’s previously unbeaten Anthony Chacon (2-1), of Puerto Rico. WSB #1 rated Vettia dropped WSB #5 Chacon with a right hook in round three.

Cuba’s #1 rated heavyweight Erislandy Savon (6-0) and USA bantamweight Ramon Cardenas, of San Antonio (TX), won their matches by walkover.

Developed by the International Boxing Association (AIBA) in 2010, the World Series of Boxing is one of the most exciting emerging sport leagues in the world. Bringing together the best boxers on the planet to compete in a team format across ten weight categories, the WSB represents a whole new way of thinking about boxing.

Being the world’s first truly global boxing league with franchises from four continents – Africa, America, Asia and Europe – the WSB promotes a transparent scoring system, bringing with it a much needed world-leading governance and commercial guidance to international boxing.

This unique team-versus-team approach has resulted in some of the most exciting clashes imaginable between the world’s top fighters on an International scale. USA vs. Mexico, Germany vs. Italy, and Ukraine vs. Russia rank are amongst the major matches that boxing fans have been given the chance to enjoy through the past four seasons of WSB competition.

Team scoring is conducted, based on the outcome of five three-minute bouts, and WSB teams are in two groups, A and B. Cuba qualified for the WSB Playoffs on top of Group B with a 9-1 record, while USA came in fourth in Group B at 4-6.

Former American boxer Dr. Wilbert “Skeeter” McClure, 1960 Olympic middleweight gold medalist in Rome, was a special guest.

Price scores third-round knockout in Denmark

David Price survived an early scare to claim a third-round knockout victory over Ondrej Pala in Esbjerg, Denmark.

Price was the victim of a flash knock down in the first-round when he was caught off balance by a big looping left behind the ear.

The British heavyweight was straight back on his feet and able to compose himself in the second before unleashing some devastating right hands in the third to twice send Pala crashing to the canvas and unable to continue.

McCreedy hopes for Hollywood finish

LAS VEGAS (April 12th, 2014) – With the city of Lowell on his back and millions watching on Pay Per View, Joey McCreedy will do his best to channel his inner Micky Ward on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

The Lowell, Mass., light heavyweight will face reigning World Boxing Council (WBC) Continental Americas champion Sean Monaghan (20-0, 13 KOs) in a 10-round bout on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Timothy Bradley rematch, promoted by Top Rank Boxing and available on HBO Pay Per View.

As the underdog against an undefeated champion, it’s a challenge similar to what McCreedy’s trainer, Ward, faced in 1997 when he battled unbeaten prospect Alfonso Sanchez, a fight featured prominently in the biopic film, The Fighter, based on Ward’s career and relationship with his half-brother Dicky Eklund. Sanchez battered Ward for six full rounds until Ward landed a left hook to the liver that sent Sanchez crashing to the canvas, cementing one of the most improbable wins of Ward’s storybook career.

“I’m going to shock the world just like Micky did,” McCreedy said. “I’m going to shock a lot of people.”

At the time, Ward trailed by nine points on one judge’s scorecard and eight on the other two. He had lost every round decisively. That killer left to the body, which became Ward’s go-to punch, not only ended the fight, but ultimately changed the course of both fighters’ careers. Ward went on to win the World Boxing Union (WBU) light welterweight title three years and finished his career with three epic battles against Arturo Gatti. Sanchez won only four of his next 10 fights and was out of boxing within the next decade.

Ward had nothing to lose that night when he stood toe-to-toe with Sanchez. He was a 32-year-old journeyman who had spent the past few years fighting at racetracks and ballrooms just outside of Boston. Sanchez was the undefeated, budding prospect destined for bigger and better things once he disposed of Ward, that is, until one punch changed everything.

Nearly two decades later, Lowell’s newest underdog, McCreedy (15-6-6, 2 KOs), faces similar odds against the undefeated champion – one of Top Rank’s most polarizing fighters – who’s already looking past McCreedy and onto to his next challenge.

Since losing to Providence’s Vladine Biosse on national television in 2010, McCreedy has slowly climbed back into the picture with wins in four of his last five fights, mostly against journeymen. Tonight, he faces his toughest test, a fight that could change everything the way it did for Ward 17 years ago.

“This is going to be a great fight,” McCreedy said. “He’s in shape. I’m in shape. We’re both warriors. He’s undefeated for a reason. But he’s definitely looking past me. Reading some of his quotes, he’s already lining up other fights.

“That’s the biggest mistake he could make. I’m not coming here to lose or be anyone’s stepping stone.”

The similarities between what McCreedy will face against Monaghan and what Ward dealt with in this same city 17 years against Sanchez are so startling even HBO color commentator Roy Jones, who will call tonight’s card, referenced it during a pre-fight repartee with McCreedy at Friday’s weigh-in.

“He said he remembered when Micky was down and how they were all counting him out,” McCreedy said, “but one shot can change everything. I’ve talked to Micky about it a couple of times. He told me I’m getting the same opportunity he got.

“All the pressure is on [Monaghan]. I have nothing to lose. He’s their guy. He knows he’s in for a fight. He’s going to be careful. He’s going to be on his toes. He doesn’t want to get caught. Me? Just let everything go. Leave it all in the ring.”

Aside from imparting his wisdom on McCreedy, Ward also made sure his fighter arrived in Vegas in the best shape of his life. McCreedy worked extensively on his conditioning – “more running than I’ve ever done in my life,” he said – to make sure he won’t run out of gas in the later rounds, if the fight gets that far. McCreedy clocked in at 173 pounds, two pounds below the light heavyweight limit.

“Honestly, I did things in this camp I never did my entire career, things I should’ve done,” he said. “If I did, I’d be the one undefeated right now, but it is what it is. I just have to stay focused. I had incredible sparring this entire camp. I’m not going to die out in the fifth or sixth round like everyone thinks I will.”

This is a new, reenergized McCreedy, not the same carefree fighter who stumbled through his mid-20s losing to journeymen on his home turf in Rhode Island. He knows what’s at stake, and he knows what one big win can do for his career as he approaches his 30s. He’s got living proof working his corner.

“I’m all in. I’m not saying this is my last chance, but it’s a chance that can change my career,” he said. “It’s the chance of a lifetime, and I know it. My family knows it. My team knows it. They’re all here to support me. I’ve got the whole city behind me. It’s a great feeling. I’m going to give it everything I have.”

ANDY LEE RETURNS TO ACTION THIS SATURDAY IN DENMARK EYEING NEW OPPORTUNITIES IN THE JUNIOR MIDDLEWEIGHT DIVISION

New York, NY (4/11/14) – This Saturday night, top-rated former middleweight world-title challenger “Irish” Andy Lee (31-2, 22KO’s) returns to action when he takes on Frank Horta (34-12-5, 13KO’s) in an eight-round special attraction at the Blue Water Dokken in Esbjerg, Denmark. It will be the first bout of 2014 for the former Olympian and the fourth since joining forces with one of the U.K.’s premiere boxing coaches, Adam Booth.

While the fight on Saturday is viewed by many to simply be a stay-busy fight for Lee, who saw his world championship shot against Gennady “GGG” Golovkin be put on hold after the unexpected death of GGG’s father, the bout does in fact have more implications than that for the 29-year-old Irishman.

A lifelong middleweight, currently rated #6 by the WBC, #11 by the WBA and #12 by the WBO, Lee decided to make the move down to junior middleweight and immediately become a force in the 154lb. division.

“I’m looking forward to fighting Saturday. Frank Horta is an experienced opponent from whom I expect a tough fight. I hope to win in style and move onto bigger fights. In the past, I made 160 pounds comfortably and by making some changes to my diet, by eating how I should’ve been, I can now make 154. I’m performing better than ever and look forward to some big fights and opportunities at 154,” said Lee.

“We are looking forward to seeing Andy perform on Saturday night in his first fight at junior middleweight. A victory on Saturday night could set Andy up with a spot on the Cotto-Martinez undercard on June 7, on HBO PPV. So this fight definitely has heavy implications,” said promoter Lou DiBella.

Having represented his native country of Ireland in the 2004 Olympics, before successfully turning pro in 2006, the rangy 6’2″ southpaw has seen his body go through a complete transformation since he began working with the highly regarded Booth in early 2013. Lee, who is known for having very good power with both hands, as witnessed by his 71% knockout ratio, will seemingly have a significant size and power advantage with the move down in weight. Lee’s losses as a pro have come against middleweight contender Brian Vera in 2008 (whom Lee later convincingly defeated in their rematch) and in his first world championship opportunity at then-WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in 2012. Following the loss to Chavez, Lee has won three bouts in a row, including two inside the distance.

Big things are expected for Lee in his new division, but he must first take care of business on Saturday night.

THE OFFICIAL PACQUIAO-BRADLEY 2 PREDICTIONS RELEASE

Pacquiao_GrandArrival_140408_008a
It’s another nail-biter with Pacquiao and Bradley waging a fight of the year type bout. I just think Bradley is on the upswing, swelling with confidence after his two recent wins while Pacquiao is on the way down. As a result, I see Bradley controlling the bout with his superior boxing ability and winning a split decision, further nudging Pacquiao off the stage of the world’s top fighters.
– Mitch Abramson, New York Daily News

Pacquiao W 12 Bradley: What’s the saying about awakening a sleeping giant? Bradley has been on the verbal offensive lately, and may be one of the few Pacquiao opponents to have succeeded in crawling under the Filipino Congressman’s skin. If, as Bradley says, the Pacquiao fire has been extinguished lately – “Desert Storm” has rekindled it. Look for a refocused, aggressive “Pac-Man” to force the issue – disregarding Bradley’s average punching power. He’ll hurt Bradley early, put him in a defensive posture for much of the fight, and survive the late-rounds rally to win a split decision.
– Matthew Aguilar, El Paso Times

Pacquiao via decision. I see Bradley trying to prove something after the controversy of their first encounter and being drawn into the trenches by the refocused Filipino. The superior speed and work-rate of Pacquiao earns him the nod. The ‘couch scorecard’ of C.J. Ross does not count.
– Mark Butcher, Boxing Monthly

Although he was clearly handled by Pacquiao in their first meeting — despite the judges’ scores — the ensuing two years have been kinder to Bradley, who has evolved into a versatile and dynamic boxer with the fearlessness of a puncher. Bradley wins close split decision in a true pick ’em fight.
– Brian Campbell, ESPN.com

In picking a fight, we often talk about physical assets and strengths. But I think this fight has a lot to do with each fighter’s mindset. Particularly, Pacquiao’s. Manny Pacquiao has to win this fight, and he knows it. What he also knows, is that he won the first fight. (I also had him winning the fight) That is a huge advantage in a rematch. On the flip side, despite everything he has been saying, I believe that Timothy Bradley is not really sure he won that first fight. This may be Pacquiao’s last great night in the ring. But he will have a great night Saturday, winning a clear unanimous decision over Bradley. ?
-Bobby Cassidy, Newsday

Pacquiao by decision. Manny Pacquiao will prove this time that he is the best between the two, but it won’t be easy because Bradley is also looking for respect among boxing fans. It will be a much closer fight than the first one.
-Eduard Cauich, Hoy!

I expect a closer fight than the first one (scorecards be damned), as Bradley should have two good wheels for this one and is coming off the biggest (legitimate) win of his career. However, the loss to Bradley still stings Pacquiao and I expect to see the killer instinct finally return. Pacquiao should hurt and drop Bradley, but Bradley will have his moments, coming up just short. Pacquiao by Split Decision
– Mike Coppinger, RingTV.com

Tough call. Regardless of how people saw their first meeting, I think Bradley knows how to fight Pacquiao. And he only got better with those fights against Ruslan and Juan Manuel. So unless he gets caught early, I see the fight lasting the distance. Anybody’s game. Pacquiao wins on points and we’re on to a third fight.
– Abac Cordero, The Philippine Star

I like Pacquiao in a split decision close fight. Manny will be aggressive but Bradley will be better than the first time they met. The judges will also be better, and that will give Manny the win.
– Tim Dahlberg, Associated Press

Manny Pacquiao really does lose this time on a split points decision. The styles don’t gel. Pacquiao will want a war, Bradley will pick his shots. This is not the Manny Pacquiao of three years ago, tearing a strip off every opponent. There is a reason why Bradley is unbeaten. He finds a way. If it is God’s will, Pacquiao could earn a decision
victory. I had him winning 117-111 first time around against Bradley.
– Gareth A. Davies, The Daily Telegraph

Hopeless romantics will want Manny Pacquiao to return to his best, as the awesome force that swirled so violently in 2009 and 2010. But since letting Margarito go the distance, his high-five fest with Mosley, the loss to Bradley, the knockout by Marquez and his failure to stop Rios – who took a lot of punishment – then it is hard to see him returning to his best at the age of 35. Bradley, as he has consistently shown, is a hard nut to crack. And while I think Pacquiao won last time, I don’t think he will this time. Bradley on points.
– Tris Dixon, Boxing News

I was one of the few to pick Bradley by split decision the first time they fought – yet feel like I got it wrong, given the controversial nature of the final decision. This time, Tim leaves no doubt, winning an 8-4 type of fight. Bradley by Unanimous Decision.
– Jake Donovan, BoxingScene.com

It will be a great fight. Bradley should not be underrated. Pacquiao will win because he still is fast and he learned from the Marquez knockout
– Bill Dwyre, Los Angeles Times

Pacquiao might not be all that he was, and Bradley clearly is ascending, although I’m not sure that the intersection of those career paths has been reached. It would be no shocker if Bradley would make it 2-for-2 over “Pac-Man,” this one truly legitimate and beyond dispute. The guess here, though, is that Pacquiao still has enough tread on his tires to win on points, but close — majority or split decision.
– Bernard Fernandez, The Ring / TheSweetScience.com

I think Bradley will clearly outmanuever and outhustle Pacquiao in the majority of rounds, but a more intense and focused Pacman than the version Timmy faced in 2012 will have some strong moments in the fight. I think Pacquiao will rock Bradley at least once; he might score a knockdown. This will make the fight close on the official scorecards. I think most of the media will score the fight for Bradley, but the majority of the public will believe that Pacquiao once again deserved the nod. Bradley by Majority or Split Decision.
– Doug Fischer, RingTV.com

While I agree with the masses that Pacquiao deserved to win the first go-round in 2012, I also think the intervening two years have been kinder to Bradley. Particularly in his Marquez fight, he showed the varied skills he’ll need to handle a Manny who’s either still what he was back then, or a trifle diminished. He’s got speed, he’s got guts and he’s got the patience and the smarts to stick to a game plan that might make for a dull fight… but a successful ending. Give me Tim by a close decision, 115-113 let’s say, and get ready for the third match
– Lyle Fitzsimmons, CBSSports.com

Manny Pacquiao by Unanimous Decision. Pacquiao figures to get the scorecard victory he should have got the first time, but it won’t be as easy as nearly everybody but two judges thought it was. Above all, Timothy Bradley is a survivor. He’s not the best of his generation, but he has unrivaled versatility and smarts. To wit: He knows how to win the close ones. He beat Ruslan Provodnikov with blood-and-guts. Then, he beat Juan Manuel Marquez with tactics and patience. Show him a style and he’ll come up with adjustments for just enough points on the cards. That’s the challenge that awaits Pacquiao.
There’s talk Pacquiao has lost his edge. The theory is he’s grown too compassionate for his craft. Who knows? But he is older. That we do know. At 35, his reflexes aren’t as quick as they were. But they’re still quick enough to confuse, elude and score if he understands the differences and has learned how to make his own adjustments. It’s a process that can transform a young lion into a mature one. Different, yet still a lion. The guess here is that Pacquiao has made the transition and will deliver the proof on April 12.
– Norm Frauenheim, The Ring / 15Rounds,com

Bradley has matured as a fighter and will be much better prepared. Pacquiao seems a little too overconfident. Bradley by Decision.
– Leighton Ginn, The Desert Sun

This definitely won’t be an easy fight for Pacquiao or Bradley. It looks like it will go 12 rounds again and if it does, expect Pacquiao to emerge victorious this time. I’m not ruling out a stoppage win by Pacquiao though,. if indeed he is training like hell, Bradley is going to be in trouble. Pacquiao by KO within ten rounds. If he lands a perfect punch early, the fight will be over in four.
– Nick Giongco, Manila Bulletin

Bradley’s “victory” in the first fight, one of the more dumbfounding decisions in recent memory, informs the rematch with a built-in storyline. Problem is, it doesn’t make it a more competitive fight. I love Bradley. I think he’s a Hall of Famer. But Pacquiao is the worst possible matchup for him: just as fast and better defensively. It says here Pacquiao wins — again — in a fight that plays out much like the first. Pacquiao by unanimous decision.
– Bryan Armen Graham, Guardian U.S.

They say Manny Pacquiao has lost a lot in his advanced age. But why? Because he was too aggressive in a loss to Juan Manuel Marquez? Because judges gave Bradley a split decision that belonged to Pacquiao? That’s not proof of any large lost steps. Bradley is the best athlete Pacquiao has faced. If Pacquiao also winds up out-boxed, then we can say he’s lost a step. But that seems less than likely. Pacquiao by 10th Round TKO.
– Nick Groke, Denver Post

I am one of the few boxing writers who didn’t think Bradley’s decision over Pacquiao was that outrageous. Bradley seems to have improved since their last fight and I expect this long-awaited return will be close.
No doubt Manny will have learned much from his first meeting with Tim and that will probably be enough to get him revenge – but once again I expect it to go to the judges.
– Colin Hart, Hall of Fame Journalist

Manny Pacquiao by Unanimous Decision over Timothy Bradley. A motivated, rejuvenated Pacquiao will beat Bradley again, but this time he’ll get the decision he deserves. It won’t be as easy for Pacquiao as their first fight, though. Bradley’s ankle and foot injuries were big factors for much of that 12-round fight. A healthier Bradley will win rounds in this rematch and already has proven he can take Pacquiao’s power. His willingness to trade, especially at close range, still will cost Bradley valuable points on the scorecards. He’ll have his moments. He just won’t win enough rounds to come out ahead in what should be a highly competitive fight.
-Keith Idec, The Record

Bradley W12 — I believe Bradley’s confidence has soared after his wins over Provodnikov and Marquez. Bradley will avoid the ropes and keep the fight in the center of the ring, where his jab, lateral movement and boxing ability will carry the day.
– Kevin Iole, Yahoo! Sports

I thought Pacman won the first fight, of course, and think he’ll not only win the rematch, he’ll get the decision.
– Michael Katz, Hall of Fame Journalist

Manny by TKO in the 11th round.
– Mark Kriegel, Author of The Good Son: The Life of Ray Mancini

I like Pacquiao by hard-fought decision in what is a very good fight. I think this time around Manny doesn’t let up in the late rounds and continues to punch in volume throughout
– Steve Kim, MaxBoxing.com

Bradley by decision. Will be easier the second time around
-Thom Loverro, The Washington Times

Mark it down, Manny by decision. Almost the KO, but settles for a unanimous decision.
-Chris Maathuis, KLAS-TV

PACQUIAO BY UNANIMOUS DECISION. I had Manny up by 2 rounds in their
first fight. Even though he out-landed Bradley, in the middle rounds his activity level slumped after the 6th stanza. Manny is inspired for this one and I believe he will consistently press the attack this time around. In their first fight, Bradley was often able to slip Pacquiao’s 3rd and 4th punches. The Pacman has to change that on Saturday night and score his signature long combinations. Pacquiao has no respect for Bradley’s power – which is both a plus and a minus. The minus is, of course, that Bradley could surprise him with a potent counter-right. The plus is that the power differential will make
Pacquiao more comfortable staying in the pocket and throwing punches in bunches. Either way, I can’t wait for this one – two amazing fighters and ambassadors for boxing.
– Gordon Marino, The Wall Street Journal

Based on his dynamic boxing ability and his will to do whatever it takes to win, and the age difference, Bradley. Based on his amazing career and his ability to reinvent himself, and the old saying that every great fighter has one great fight left in him, Pacquaio.
– Larry Merchant, Hall of Fame Journalist

My feeling at the moment, before seeing the fighters next week, is a late stoppage by Pacquiao. So much to prove, too much to lose, so much to gain…..and will feel he can’t trust leaving it to the judges this time.
– Jeff Powell, Daily Mail

I think it will be a close fight again, but I will be rooting for my friend Manny Pacquaio. He needs to prove to everybody that he won this fight already the first time around, and I think he will!
– Ruslan Provodnikov, WBO junior welterweight champion

Pacquiao won the first fight easily and got robbed of the decision. In the rematch, he will get the decision. Pacquiao W12.
-Dan Rafael, ESPN.com

Tim Bradley by Split Decision : This will happen if Bradley fights the way that he did in his last appearance, which was the split-decision victory over Juan Manuel Marquez.
If Bradley does that, then the only reason for him not to get the decision is if the judges get it wrong, like they did in Bradley-Pacquiao I, which I saw as a close fight and had Pacquiao winning, 115-113. I Bradley is all there, mentally, I see a scenario similar to Michael Spinks’ repeat victories over Larry Holmes.
– Lem Satterfield, RingTV.com

Both fighters have something to prove in this one, but I believe Pacquiao has a greater need to win. His career is on the line. Unless Bradley decides to go toe-to-toe with Manny and slug it out, which I don’t think he will – I see him using Marquez’s counterpunching strategy and try to catch him as JMM did — I have no doubt that Manny will outwork him and prevail by unanimous decision.
– Bob Velin, USA Today

I think Tim Bradley will win another split decision, this one not as controversial, because he can box, move and take a punch — all prerequisites for dealing with Pacquiao.
– Mark Whicker, Orange County Register

Despite being viciously concussed during his fight with Ruslan Provodnikov, Timothy Bradley has gotten better, arguably a lot better, since he and Pacman faced off. Bradley in his last bout against Juan Manuel Marquez, proved to be master of his domain. He owns a newfound and potent brand of confidence which will show up on April 12. I see every round being ultra-close, and another judging snafu is entirely possible. For that reason, two of the three will punt, and we will see a draw. Yep, like kissin’ yer cousin…Which sets us up for a third tangle, which will get done after Manny and Marquez meet yet again!
– Michael Woods, TheSweetScience.com / ESPNNewYork.com

NO MORE MR NICE GUY! PACQUIAO VOWS TO RECAPTURE WORLD TITLE BY RETURNING TO HIS RUTHLESS PAST LIVE AND EXCLUSIVE ON BOXNATION

Pacquiao_Bradley_finalPC_140409_002a
LONDON (April 11) – Boxing legend Manny Pacquiao believes his role as challenger in his world title bout with Tim Bradley this weekend will inspire him to victory.

The Filipino superstar has cut a calm and relaxed figure throughout fight week as he looks to avenge his controversial 2012 loss to the Californian Bradley, live and exclusive on BoxNation.

It was the 30-year-old Bradley who wrestled the WBO welterweight championship away from the claws of the eight-weight world champion Pacquiao on that fateful night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

But now, ‘Pacman’ is ready to thrive in his position as the challenger, as he looks to show that he can reach the heights of his illustrious past on his way to winning an unprecedented eleventh world title.

“There are a lot of people who doubt I can fight the same way I fought when I knocked out Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera,” said Pacquiao.

“I want to prove to them that I am the best. I am inspired. I am the challenger. I know I will need to outbox and outspeed Bradley. And that is what I will do. This is the first time I have challenged for a world title that I lost. Do I want it back? You bet I do; and I want it back from Tim Bradley,” he said.

Accusations have been levelled at Pacquiao questioning if he still has the hunger and desire for prizefighting.

The man himself admitted he was too cordial in the initial meeting with Bradley, stating he won’t play the nice guy this time around, with the American needing to lay him out to win.

“The only way Bradley can beat me this time is to knock me out. He cannot outbox me. I will be the aggressor. I will throw a lot of punches at him – more than I threw against [Brandon] Rios – and I will land them,” Pacquiao said.

“Last time I was too nice. This time, I will finish what I start. I want to get back that belt he won off of me. Boxing has always been fun for me. This time the fun is secondary. This is a mission to prove I am the best.

“In my fight against Rios I proved I can still fight at the high level everyone expects from me. I showed I can still control a fight as well as I ever have,” he said.

Juggling his role as a boxer and Congressman back home in the Philippines hasn’t been an easy one for the 35-year-old.

He has seen the progress that Bradley has made over the past two years, overcoming WBO light-welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov and Mexican icon Juan Manuel Marquez, to cement his place amongst the elite in the 147 pound division.

Pacquiao is honest enough to declare he overlooked Bradley the first time, but there will be no chance of that this time around.

“I remember last time believing that I won the first fight against Tim Bradley. I thought I was leading after every round. I thought I won the fight easily. I controlled the fight every round. I had a feeling in training camp that he would run from me once he felt my power and he did after the third or fourth round,” said Pacquiao.

“I was very surprised by the decision. But that’s part of the game. He got the decision and my title. But to be honest, I wasn’t as motivated when I was training for our first fight. I guess I didn’t take him seriously enough,” he said.

“I am impressed with what Bradley has done since our fight. He is a different fighter now since we fought. He has more experience at this level and as a welterweight champion. He fought extremely well against Marquez. I knew Tim would beat him utilizing his speed. But in the end I am still faster than Bradley,” Pacquiao said.

The rematch between the pair kicks-off a mega next couple of months on BoxNation with a host of world title fights including Floyd Mayweather’s ring return against Marcos Maidana on May 3rd, with British star Amir Khan also featuring that night against the skilled Luis Collazo.

The final instalment of 24/7: Pacquiao vs. Bradley airs tonight on BoxNation at 7pm, free-to-air to all Sky TV customers.

Pacquiao vs. Bradley 2 is live on BoxNation (Sky 437/490HD & Virgin 546) this Sunday at 2am. Visit www.boxnation.com to subscribe.

Chicago, IL (April 11, 2014) Chicago’s two most popular professional boxers, DONOVAN “Da Bomb” GEORGE and ‘Hollywood” MIKE JIMENEZ will return to battle on Friday, APRIL 18 at the Windy City’s premier fight venue, Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana, it was announced today by Chicago’s leading boxing promoters Hitz Boxing and Round 3 Productions.

“These are the two most popular fighters in Chicago and with our anticipated huge crowd, local fight fans should expect an excellent night of action,” said Bobby Hitz, now in his 25th year of promoting in Chicago. “With tickets starting at just $25.00, this is an excellent value for the sports fans dollar.”

“For decades Chicago fight fans have been proud of the toughness of its fighters. Donovan and Mike exemplify this toughness perfectly,” said Frank Mugnolo of Round 3 Productions.

Advance tickets starting at $25.00 for “FIGHT NIGHT” are available at all Ticketmaster outlets, The Venue/Horseshoe Box Office and HitzBoxing.com. Doors open on the night of the event at 7:00 p.m. CT with the first bell at 7:30 p.m. CT.

Known internationally for his well earned “blood and guts” warrior reputation and celebratory back flip celebrations, world ranked contender George will face off against St. Paul, Minnesota veteran TROY LOWRY in an eight round, super middleweight clash while hot light heavyweight prospect Jimenez will look to stay undefeated against BRANDON “EL Cubanito” Gonzalez of San Diego, California in a scheduled six round tilt.

Just 29-years-old, George, 24-4-2 (21KO’s), will be looking to kick start his 2014 campaign while seeking his 25th professional victory. Long a fan favorite over his nine-year career, George has never lost in his native Chicago.

Fielding a record of 28-13-0 with seventeen knockouts, Lowry will also be making his 2014 debut.

The 26-year-old Jimenez, 13-0-0 (10KO’s), like George born and raised in Chicago, will look to stay on his already torrid pace for 2014, having already scored two knockouts. Most recently the hard-hitting Jimenez drilled England’s Jimmy Campbell to the canvas in the first round to bring a show-stopping end to the Hitz Boxing FEBRUARY 28TH event at the Horseshoe Casino.

Gonzalez enters the clash with Jimenez sporting an even record of 12-12-4 (6KO’s) and comes off hard fought battle with Derrick Webster on MARCH 14, losing a six round majority decision in the fan favorite’s hometown.

In a special attraction event at “FIGHT NIGHT”, world ranked Russian heavyweight ANDREY FEDOSOV, 24-3-0 (19KO’s), will also make his highly anticipated return to the Horseshoe Casino.

Also included on the card in separate bouts are numerous Chicago fan favorites and top prospects; undefeated cruiserweight DIMAR “Strongman Ortuz 9-0-0 (6KO’s), welterweight ROY NAVARRO, 5-1-0 (3KO’s) of Chicago, junior welterweights ANTONIO “Aztec God of War” CANAS, 9-1-1 (3KO’s) and EDDIE RAMIREZ, 3-0-0 (3KO’s) of Aurora.

HENNESSY SPORTS PROMOTE A NIGHT OF CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING

London (11 April) Kid Galahad will fight back in front of a packed home crowd at Ponds Forge Arena, Sheffield, on May 10th, live on Channel 5.

The undefeated newly crowned European super bantamweight champion, Galahad, won the title at the same venue just last month and is aiming to keep pushing forward towards a world title opportunity.

“I loved my last fight and it really meant everything to me to win the European title in front of all my friends and family, as well as having my team and Brendan (Ingle) there,” Galahad said.

“I just need to keep winning, keep progressing and building my momentum towards a world title.”

The 24-year-old Qatar born Sheffield fighter extended his unblemished record to 16 wins, with a 12 round masterclass over former Spanish champion Sergio Prado just over two weeks ago.

The Ingle trained star, Galahad, who is also a former undefeated British and WBC International champion, impressed the home crowd with a confident showcase of his slick movement and blurring hand speed and is excited by the super bantamweight division and ready to make it another memorable night for all his Yorkshire fans.

“I watched Carl Frampton fight last weekend in his WBC world title eliminator and he is doing great and looked fantastic, obviously Scott Quigg fights next weekend defending his WBA world title in Manchester and I’m the new European champion and fighting again on May 10th.

“If we all keep winning and keep doing well the super bantamweight division will really heat up and could become the new generation of Eubank vs Benn vs Watson.

“The fans can expect me to give it everything I have to win, every time I fight and I promise I’m going to do what I do best and that’s win.”

Promoter Mick Hennessy said: “I am delighted to bring Barry (Kid Galahad) back to his home city so quickly.

“His last performance was superb to pick up the European title and I know all his fans are in for a real explosive show on May 10.

“We will be announcing more details over the next few days and one thing is for sure, this isn’t to be missed.”

Also scheduled to fight on the show is undefeated heavyweight sensation Hughie Lewis Fury as he looks to extend his perfect professional record to 14 straight wins. There will also be a whole host of local talent on the bill, including Sheffield’s Dave Howe, Callum Hancock, Tom Mcassey and Ryan Hardy, Barnsley’s Lee Noble, Rotherham’s Karl Bell and Chatteris fighter Jordan Gill.

BROADWAY BOXING DELIVERS AGAIN!

(NEW YORK, NY) – New York, NY – DiBella Entertainment staged a thrilling eight-bout night of boxing at the famed BB King Blues Club and Grill, in New York City’s Times Square, showcasing highly talented up-and-coming prospects in front a packed house of feverish fans.

Headlining the card in his US debut was Ecuador’s world-ranked welterweight contender Erick Bone, 145¼, 14-1 (8 KOs), now living in New York. Facing him was New York staple and veteran trial horse Francisco “El Gato” Figueroa, 146¾, 20-7-1 (13 KOs), of Bronx, who did his best to show Bone a few old school tricks and counter shots. Bone took his time finding the best opportunities to land his leather, slowly breaking Figueroa down to the body. Bone moved his attack upstairs as the rounds went and in the fifth frame, Bone hurt Figueroa with a combination to the head and trapped him against the ropes. With Bone unloading a barrage, Figueroa was not throwing back, resulting in the referee stopping the bout at the 2:40 mark.

Bryant “PeeWee” Cruz, 132, 10-0 (6 KOs), Port Chester, NY, pounded on Willshaun Boxley, 132, 6-11-1 (4 KOs), Coon Rapids, MN, for three rounds. Pinning Boxley against the ropes, Cruz landed an impressive array of punches, circumventing his foe’s tight defense well to bang to the body. Just 34 seconds into round three, Boxley’s corner asked the referee to stop the fight, feeling their charge had taken too much punishment. It was Cruz’s official DBE and New Legend Boxing debut. and he did not disappoint, sending the packed house intro a frenzy upon the stoppage.

Louis Cruz, 138, 7-0 (4 KOs), Bronx, earned a dominate six-round unanimous decision over Tony Walker, 138, 5-5-1 (3 KOs), Cincinnati, OH. Cruz controlled the action throughout, scoring with hard shots from the outside. Nicknamed “Cruz Control”, Cruz sailed to a shut-out decision, winning by scores of 60-54 across the board.

Junior “Sugar Boy” Younan, 167¾, a nine-time National amateur champion, 4-0 (4 KOs), Brooklyn, obliterated Dustin Parrish, 165, 1-3 (1 KO), Tallassee, FL, just 28 seconds into the opening round. Parrish immediately rushed Younan in an attempt to surprise him, but the 18-year-old phenom remained poised and countered hard with a right that dropped his foe hard. The Floridian bravely rose to his feet and forced the action once again, only to be countered this time by a left hook that felled him a second time. Feeling that Parrish was in no condition to continue, referee Harvey Dock stopped the fight.

Brooklyn’s Shemuel “The Chosen One” Pagan, 140, the five-time New York Golden Gloves champion, came out against James Gooding, 139½, Tampa, FL, employing a stiff jab early on. In the second stanza, a left hook dropped Gooding for a count and once he arose, Pagan pounced on him banging away forcing referee Benji Esteves to jump in and stop the carnage at the 1:50 mark. Pagan improved to 5-0 (2 KOs), while Gooding’s record fell to 1-6-1 (1 KO).

Ryan Gamache, 145, the comebacking nephew of former world champion Joey Gamache, lost a spirited four-round contest to Ryan Picou, 147, of Las Vegas, now 1-2. Picou stung Gamache in round three with a right hook. Gamache also lost a point in this round for continually spitting out his mouthpiece. The scores were 39-36, 38-36, and 38-37, all for Picou via unanimous decision. Gamache, of Lewiston, ME, who had not fought in 10 years, fell to 2-1 (1 KO).

Ievgen “The Ukrainian Lion” Khytrov, 163, the 2012 Olympian and heavily-hyped middleweight prospect now living in Brooklyn, improved to 4-0 (4 KOs), by scoring a second-round TKO over Jas Phipps, 160, 4-3 (1 KO), Killeen, TX. A left hook dropped Phipps in round one. Khytrov, a veteran of over 500 amateur contests, continued to batter Phipps throughout the second frame until referee Harvey Dock mercifully halted the contest at the 2:07 mark.

Kiun Evans, 126½, 7-0-1 (5 KOs), Little Rock, AR, fought to a six-round draw in an evenly-matched affair against Las Vegas resident Pedro Toledo, 128, 2-1-1. While Toledo was the busier fighter, Evans seemed to land the harder shots. The undefeated featherweight prospect also showed adept ability in throwing counter shots. A scorecard of 58-56 in Evans’ favor was overruled by scores of 57-57. 57-57.
