Manuel Charr and Kevin Johnson ready for war

This Saturday (April 12th) WBC #6 rated heavyweight contender Manuel Charr takes on Kevin “Kingpin” Johnson at Telekom Dome in Bonn, Germany. At today’s weigh-in Charr brought 242.5 lbs. to the scale while Johnson weighed in slightly heavier at 244.5 lbs. Both guys left no doubt that they are ready for war. “People may not know it yet but Germany is my country”, said Johnson. “They will love me once I whipped this guy’s a**!”

“I will be the first one to knock out Kevin Johnson”, stated Manuel Charr. “This is my chance to shine and to get closer to another shot at the world title.” Both men have fought for the WBC heavyweight championship before losing to Vitali Klitschko. Johnson dropped a lopsided decision in 2009 while Charr was stopped because of a cut in September 2012. The winner will reenter the title race while it may be all over for the loser.

In the co-feature WBO # 15 rated middleweight contender Hamid Rahimi will take on Bronislav Kubin. Rahimi who made worldwide news in October 2012 when he promoted the first ever professional boxing fight in Afghanistan labeled as “Fight For Peace” weighed in at 161 lbs. His opponent was still on his way to Bonn when the weigh-in ceremony was held.

The show promoted by Manuel Charr’s “Diamondoy Promotion” will take place at Telekom Dome in Bonn, Germany.

Heavyweight Skipp Scott Hears From Fans Worldwide, Voicing Their Support: ‘He should have been disqualified. It was a blatant foul.’

Heavyweight contender Skipp “Strictly Business” Scott says he has heard from hundreds of boxing fans around the world who support his efforts to have his controversial “loss” to Gerald Washington reversed.

Scott trained hard for the biggest fight of his life to date, a FOX Sports 1- and FOX Deportes-televised showdown against fellow up-and-comer Gerald “El Gallo Negro” Washington on Thursday, April 3, at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California, only to have his night ended early by a blatantly illegal punch thrown by Washington.

Scott was legitimately dropped by a right hand and took a knee to recover, but was then hit by a hard body shot from Washington a full second after going down at 1:40 of round two. Referee Lou Moret missed the illegal punch and awarded Washington a KO victory, much to the dismay of Scott and his team, as well as the television commentators and many who have seen the incident.

“I’ve heard from hundreds of people all over the world,” said Scott. “People I don’t even know reaching out and telling me they agree with the commentators and disagree with the referee. It was an illegal shot and he should have been disqualified. It was a blatant foul.”

Scott admits he was badly hurt by the illegal punch, which caught him in the body and bowled him over.

“I was very hurt. Any time a strong 260-lb man winds up and hits you with everything he’s got while you’re not even looking, it’ll totally paralyze you. I felt like that shot took everything out of me. I stood up, still dazed, and the left side of my body was still numb. When I went to move, that whole side of my body gave out on me. It took me a while to get it all back together.”

A true sportsman, Scott says he bears Washington no hard feelings and doesn’t think the foul was thrown on purpose.

“Do I think he did it intentionally? No. After the fight, I went over to Washington. I’m a gentleman at all times. No hard feelings. Business is business. I told him I hope you have a great career. That’s what I would have said no matter what, win or lose. My biggest prayer is that every fighter, win or lose, leaves the ring healthy and able to support their family. I realize it’s an adrenaline sport and I know emotions are strong. I understand things happen in a fight. But whether he did it on purpose or not doesn’t matter. He hit me with a bad shot, intentional or unintentional. What really has me upset is that the referee, before the fight, explained to us his number one rule is if you hit a guy when he’s down, he’ll deduct two points and/or disqualify you, no questions asked.”

While Scott says he and his team haven’t heard from the California Boxing Commission yet regarding the official protest they’ve launched, he’s reasonably confident the outcome will eventually be changed.

“We talked to the TV announcers and to all three judges and they all said they saw the foul. They should overturn this from a loss for me to a DQ for him. It’s not just my team’s word of mouth. It comes from Commission officials. They all saw him hit me while I was on the ground. I just want the right decision to be made. You should still have to pay the penalty for it.”

Regardless of the final decision on the incident, Scott says he would love to face Washington again and settle who the true better man is.

“I would love to fight him again. I felt great in there. I knew what my game plan was, to feel him out and then start moving forward. I felt good I was relaxed. It was a ten-round fight, there was no need to start out guns blazing. I would have eventually started picking him apart and that’s what I’ll do if we fight again.”

July confident heading into bout with unbeaten Graves!

Suitland, MD (April 10, 2014) – As cruiserweight contender who works full time as a lawyer and promotes many of his own fights, 31-year-old Venroy “Hardwork” July is constantly on the go.

On the average weekday, July wakes up around 6 am to go for a run, comes back to freshen up and have breakfast, heads to his full-time job at Hogan Lovells to work from 9-7 and then goes to the boxing gym for about 2 hours. After many of his aforementioned exhausting days, July heads back to the office and finishes up work. On top of all that, Quantis Graves, the man he faces Saturday evening at the Patapsco Arena in Baltimore, MD, is his toughest foe to date.

Graves, an alternate on the 2008 US Olympic Team and three-time Golden Gloves champion, has a significant edge in experience on July due to his amateur pedigree. The 31-year old Texan is yet to lose as a pro, compiling an impressive 9-0-1 record with four victories by way of knockout.

“For me to become a championship level fighter, I have to beat quality fighters,” said July, a 2007 Graduate of Duke University’s School of Law. “Beating an unbeaten and well regarded opponent like Quantis Graves will help me get there. I’ve seen him fight before and he’s a good fighter but so am I. I’m very confident that I’ll win this one.”

After a brief amateur career, July’s been a surprising success in the paid ranks. The popular Suitland, MD based Jamaican has an excellent 16-1-2 ledger, scoring six knockouts along the way. On January 24, he impressively outpointed Sevdail Sherifi in Atlantic City, NJ. After that victory, July was noticed by former cruiserweight champion and heavyweight contender Steve “USS” Cunningham, whom he recently sparred with.

“Steve is a great guy and a great fighter. We went at in the gym and knowing that I can hang with top fighters like that only adds to my confidence. Everybody in the gym tells you how good you are, but actually going in there and trading punches with a top fighter is a whole different thing. My work with Steve Cunningham definitely helped me get ready for the Graves bout and future challenges.”

July meets Graves in the eight round main event.

On the undercard, super middleweight knockout artist Demond “Dbestatit” Nicholson, heavyweight Dwayne “Big Ticket” McRae, undefeated junior middleweight Larry “Cuban Assassin” Recio, and featherweight Alexandru Marin will all appear separate bouts.

The card is promoted by Hardwork Promotions and tickets are available by going to Hardworkpromotions.com or calling 410-635-4754.

BERNARD HOPKINS & ZACHARY OCHOA PHILADELPHIA MEDIA WORKOUT QUOTES

Bernard Hopkins
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (April 10, 2014) – Future Hall of Famer and IBF Light Heavyweight World Champion Bernard “The Alien” Hopkins worked out in front of a throng of reporters Thursday at DSG Boxing Gym in Philadelphia as he winds down preparation for his Saturday, April 19, World Championship Unification against Beibut Shumenov.

Hopkins, the IBF titleholder, and Shumenov, the WBA Super Champion, will square off in the main event of a SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING world championship tripleheader at the DC Armory in Washington, D.C., live on SHOWTIME at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast), immediately following the premiere of Episode 1 of ALL ACCESS: Mayweather vs. Maidana.

At 49-years-old, “The Alien” Hopkins (54-6-2, 32 KOs), of Philadelphia, is looking to become the oldest fighter in boxing history to unify world titles, while Shumenov (14-1, 9 KOs), of Shymkent, Kazakhstan, is aiming to become the fastest fighter to unify the light heavyweight division with only 15 professional fights.

Tonight on SHOWTIME EXTREME (10 p.m. ET/PT), SHOWTIME Sports® will re-air Hopkins’ unanimous decision over Karo Murat (last Oct. 26 from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City) followed by Shumenov’s knockout of Tamas Kovacs (last Dec. 14 from the Alamodome in San Antonio).

In the April 19 co-main event, IBF Welterweight World Champion Shawn “Showtime” Porter will defend his title against former two-time and two-division word champion Paulie “Magic Man” Malignaggi. In the opening bout of the SHOWTIME telecast, undefeated WBO Middleweight World Champion Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin will put his title on the line against former interim WBO Junior Middleweight Champion Lukas Konecny.

Joining Hopkins at Thursday’s workout was undefeated junior welterweight prospect Zachary Ochoa, who will square off against Hector Marengo in the second of three bouts that will air on SHOWTIME EXTREME beginning at 7 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

Here’s what the participants had to say after Thursday’s workouts:

BERNARD HOPKINS, IBF Light Heavyweight World Champion

“If you don’t respect your job, it’s going to disrespect you and kill you.

“To be 49-years-old, approaching 50 and knocking on the door of being a senior citizen. It’s a profound statement of my dedication.

“It’s sweeter now to be here with everybody. Everything I do is history. If you had one more chance to see something that you loved before you never see it again…here I am. You’ll have a chance to see history. You can tell your grandkids about what you saw today at Danny Garcia’s gym.

“Taking the test without studying is like taking a fight without being in the gym. The gym is studying. The test is April 19. You can put the cart in front of the horse if you’re a fool and I think people would agree I’m no fool.

“I’m a guy that loves the craft and respects the craft. You can love something, but it doesn’t mean you respect it. Love is the emotional part; respect is the dedication and hard work. That attitude and that demeanor is always going to be there. That’s just who I am.

“I’m still having fun. That’s the thing that a lot of us miss. I’m having more fun now than when I was in the middle or beginning of my career. There were a lot more things I had to go through in my life, but I’m having more fun now than I had in the last 16 years. Since about 40-years-old, we’re talking nine years later. It’s a big deal. I don’t want to downplay it.

“Name another athlete in this country that is doing it at this age and winning, not just competing, but fighting the top fighters in the world. This guy is no run-of-the-mill guy, he’s a threat. I’m not fighting a cream puff; this isn’t a bum of the month club. I’m fighting real dudes. These guys are hardcore, hungry and top contenders.

“The sweet science that has been missing in this sport. We hate violence, but we love it. People don’t look at the sweet science like I do in this ring. The game is to hit and not get hit.

“You can overthink or over study for a test. There’s a time and a place for everything. You have to look at some tape, but I can’t sit there every day watching and watching. Your mind starts playing tricks on you. You start seeing things you aren’t really seeing. I want some element of surprise, so I can check it right there.

“I’m not going to be surprised by his style. There’s nothing he can do that I haven’t seen. Can he say the same thing?

“I’m fresher now, living the same lifestyle. Taking care of my body the same way I did them. I’m in better shape now and with wisdom.

“I don’t get caught up in anybody else’s business where it becomes negative to me. I have tunnel vision. Everything is looking towards my fight. I don’t get sidetracked.

“Shumenov wants to make a name, like everyone else. What better place to make a name than against me?

“I’m from the old school but I’m stuck in the new era.”

ZACHARY OCHOA, Undefeated Junior Welterweight Prospect

“This is my second day training at Danny Garcia’s gym. I came because Danny gave me an open invitation so I was here Monday and he invited me back.

“Every time I fight on a Hopkins undercard its history. That’s what he is.

“I’ve never been to D.C. in my life and this is my first time in Philly. I’m a Brooklyn kid. I’m not nervous, just excited.”

Promoter looks forward to Saturday Showcase at Paisley Lagoon Leisure Centre

With an actioned packed Six fight bill planned for Saturday evening, Saltire Promotions Colin Bellshaw is looking forward to a show which he thinks will top the last one. “We have worked hard on giving the fans a good night, and have stacked it full of established names and new ones. The last one delivered in a cracking main event between Craig Kelly and Billy Campbell, which was regarded as one of the best area title fights in Scotland for a long time.

He adds “This time we are headlined by Rhys Pagan v Mike Towell. Both laddies have there own style and are coming to win there first Scottish Area Title. I think this could be every bit as good as the Kelly/Campbell fight.
The undercard is headed by local fighter Kris Carslaw, who takes on Dan Blackwell. Expecting a tough night for Carslaw, his coach is not overlooking the task in hand “We have been working on a few things, and Blackwell will come to win, and make it a tough night for Carslaw.
Dundee’s Ronnie Clark is no stranger to a Paisley Crowd, having previously fought there in 2011. “Ronnie has had an injury which has kept him out for a while ,but he is in line for a British Title Eliminator later this year against Troy James” Explains Bellshaw. “This is his first fight this year, and he has told me he has time to make up. We have him in with Michael Mooney who is durable and will keep him on his toes!
Looking for his third successive win, Brian Peacock returns to the venue were he made his debut, and takes on Mark Till “Brian has settled into the professional ranks quite well. He trains hard and is always keen to progress, and really has gone through the camp with the desire to pick up his first ko in the paid rank’s. He boxes Mark Till who upset Alistaier McEwan on our last show. We have Two guys with lots of ambition and this will make for another great fight.
After headlining the last Saltire show in January, Craig Kelly returns to action with a Six round bout against Fahreem Khan. Bellshaw admits, it was easy to include him on the card “It was Only fitting to have Craig back on our show after the performance he gave in winning the Scottish welterweight title against Billy Campbell. He left it all in the ring in a great fight and I am sure he wont disappoint this time as he will look to build on that.
Completing the line up sees Aberdeen based Marek Laskowski, who takes on Glasgow based Shaun McShane . A late addition to the line up, Bellshaw thinks this could be the fight of the night “What we have here is two come forward fighters and they have the potential who steal the show I believe. I am grateful to them for stepping up and are a great addition to the card as Michael McGurk pulled out through illness.
Saltire Boxing present n Evening of Championship Boxing this Saturday 12 April at the Paisley Lagoon Leisure Centre.
Headlined by Rhys Pagan v Mike Towell for the vacant Scottish Light Middleweight title, and is supported by strong undercard featuring the return of Kris Carslaw as he looks towards a British Title Eliminator in the summer.
Also in action is Ronnie Clark, Brian Peacock while Scottish Welterweight Champion Craig Kelly also returns, and completing the line up is Marek Laskowski.
Standard Tickets are priced at £30, Ringside Reserved are £40 while Inner Ringside £60 and are available from the fighters directly and a limited number available on the door on the evening.

“COLLISION” UNDERCARD ANNOUNCED DAVID LEMIEUX VS. FERNANDO GUERRERO IN CO-FEATURE FOR NABF MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE

davidlemieux
MONTREAL (April 10, 2014) — Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM) is presenting an evening of thunder, “Collision: Stevenson vs. Fonfara,” May 24 at Bell Centre in Montreal. The co-feature will mark the SHOWTIME debut of powerful Quebec middleweight David Lemieux (31-2-0, 29 KOs), who takes on Dominican Republic-born, American fighter Fernando Guerrero (26-2-0, 19 KOs) for the vacant NABF title.

The IBF #10 and WBO #11 rated Lemieux has an incredible opportunity to break into the international scene in the 160-pound division. He has made vital changes since his loss to current WBC interim champion Marco Antonio Rubio ( 59-6-1, 51 KOs), riding a six-fight win streak, five coming by knockout, into his May 24 showdown with former world title challenger Guerrero.

The 25-year-old Lemieux has paid his dues in order to become a more effective and dangerous fighter. Last November in Laval (Quebec), IBF # 6 ranked Jose Miguel Torres (27-6-0, 24 KOs) was stopped in the seventh round, his first stoppage in his career, after Lemieux had floored him six times.

Guerrero had a great amateur career, highlighted by being crowned national champion in 2007. His more notables wins as a professional have been over Gabriel Rosado (21-8-0, 13 KOs), Ossie Duran (28-11-3, 11 KOs) and Ishe Smith (25-6-0, 11 KOs. Guerreo In his lone world title shot to date, by way of seventh-round technical knockout to WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin (30-0-0, 22 KOs) in 2013. Guerrero has since returned to winning ways and at age 27, he is convinced that he has gained experience and maturity to deserve another world title shot.

“COLLISION,” headlined by the WBC light heavyweight championship fight between defending champion Adonis “Superman” Stevenson (23-1-0, 20 KOs) and challenger Andrzej Fonfara (25-2-0, 15 KOs), is presented by Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM) in association with Warriors Boxing, and co-presented by Mise-O-Jeu and Videotron.

According to the president Yvon Michel of GYM, “David Lemieux is the next big star of the World middleweight division! His presence in the ring literally mesmerizes the crowd as he intensively charges with violent intentions His arrival in the big leagues is eagerly awaited.”

Talented light heavyweight contender Eleider “Storm” Alvarez (14-0-0, 8 KOs) is on a mission to become world champion. The WBO # 2, WBA # 3 and WBC #10 light heavyweight is in an enviable position in world rankings and ready for anyone. His opponent will be confirmed soon..

Upon his arrival in Montreal from his native Russia, GYM announced it would not drag things regarding the activity and development of its gifted light heavyweight Artur Beterbiev (4-0-0, 4 KOs). Having completed his apprenticeship fighting four bouts Quebec, the two-time Russian Olympian moves up in rounds and clash, meeting former IBF world light heavyweight champion Jeff ” Left Hook” Lacy (26-4-0, 19 KOs) in a 10-round clash on the stacked “Collision” card. After an absence of several years, the 2000 U.S. Olympian won his last fight this past November against Martin Verdin (20-17-2, 11 KOs). Lacy is a sleek, experienced opponent and Beterbiev’s first major test as a professional.

Unbeaten welterweight Mikael Zewski (23-0-0, 18 KOs) also returns to the ring May 24 in front of his Quebec fans. Promoted by Top Rank, the popular Zewski will fight for the seventh time in Quebec. He has fought prestigious locations like New York, Las Vegas or Atlantic City. His opponent, Prince “Too Hot” Doku Jr. (18-5-0, 12 KOs), will be fighting for the third consecutive time outside of his native Ghana.

BRANDON GONZALES vs. JAMES DEGALE SET FOR MAY 31ST

Brandon Gonzales
NEW JERSEY (April 10, 2014) – Gary Shaw Productions and Antonio Leonard Promotions is happy to announce that their undefeated super-middleweight contender, Brandon Gonzales (18-0-1, 10 KOs), will fight James DeGale (18-1, 12 KOs) on the undercard of Carl Froch (32-2, 23 KOs) vs. George Groves (19-1, 15 KOs) at Wembley Stadium in London, United Kingdom on May 31, 2014. The 12-round bout will be for the IBF mandatory position.

Gonzales is currently ranked IBF # 3 while DeGale is ranted IBF # 4. Both fighters are looking to capitalize on this momentous opportunity with victor most likely to challenge the winner of Froch vs. Groves.

Gonzales, who is managed by James Prince, feels he’s the better fighter. With an undefeated record and the right people behind him, Gonzales feels his time is now.

“I’ve been working hard my whole life to get in this position,” said Brandon Gonzales. “I never had anything come easy to me in this boxing game. I had to work my way up the rankings the hard way with little support. Now that I have Gary Shaw and Antonio Leonard promoting me, I feel I have all the necessary pieces to become a star. James Prince and I had a vision and now it’s coming to fruition.”

“DeGale is a very good fighter with a lot of heart. His only lost is a controversial majority decision defeat to George Groves. Most people thought he won that fight so in my eyes he’s going to be coming at me like an undefeated fighter looking to redeem himself. I’m ready for the challenge. DeGale stands in my way of becoming a world champion and I must take him out. One thing I know is I’m coming to win and show the world that Brandon Gonzales is the real deal.”

Gary Shaw, who recently signed Gonzales with Antonio Leonard, is thrilled to get his fighter an opportunity to make a major push in his career.

“I told Brandon when we signed him to be ready to go because I really want to get him a title shot,” said Gary Shaw. “Now he’s in position to really do something special in his career. A win against DeGale will get him the world title shot he’s worked so hard to achieve. He must come out victorious to make his dream come true and I believe he has the talent to be something special in the division.”

“Brandon is hungry to show everyone in the super-middleweight division that he’s the man,” said Antonio Leonard. “He’s undefeated for a reason, because he’s got immense skill. I believe in him and Gary and I got his back moving forward. This fight will be one the fans will not want to miss. It’s going to be all action from the opening bell.”

World Series of Boxing matches announced for USA Knockouts vs. Cuba Domadores Sat. night at Rockingham Park in Salem, NH

SALEM, N.H. (April 9, 2014) – All of the matches have been announced for this Saturday night’s (Apr. 12) first International Boxing Association (AIBA)-sanctioned amateur boxing event on American soil between Cuba and the United States.

The New England debut of the World Series of Boxing (WSB), featuring an upset-minded USA Knockouts against the loaded Cuba Domadores, will be held at Rockingham Park in Salem, New Hampshire.

The most competitive matches, on paper, are in the light flyweight and lightweight divisions. Undefeated, WSB No. 1-rated light flyweight, Cuba’s Yosbany Veitia (5-0), faces unbeaten USA 108-pound Anthony Chacon (2-0, 1 KO), the WSB No. 5-rated boxer from Puerto Rico. In the lightweight match, 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Yasner Toledo (3-1), the WSB No. 2-rated Cuban, meets USA 132-pound and WSB No. 5 ranked Carlos Adames, of Dominican Republic. Toledo captured a gold medal at the 2011 Pan-Am champion and also was a two-time silver medalist at the World Championships

American heavyweight Joshua Temple (0-2) will take on the undefeated, WSB No. 1 201-pound Erislandy Savon (5-0, 2 KOs). The 6′ 4″ Temple, boxing out of St. Louis, was a 2014 USA Boxing National champion. Savon’s uncle is three-time Olympic gold medalist Felix Savon, who was also a Cuban heavyweight. The 23-year-old left-handed Savon took a gold medal home to Cuba from the 2008 World Youth Amateur Boxing Championships and 2009 Pan-American Games.

USA bantamweight Ramon Cardenas, fighting out of San Antonio, makes his WSB season debut against unbeaten WSB #3-rated Cuban 123-pound Marcos Forestal (3-0), while USA middleweight Mario Delgado (1-2), of Ecuador, is a major underdog versus WSB #2-rated 132-pound Cuban Arisnoide Despaigne (3-1).

Developed by the International Boxing Association (AIBA) in 2010, the World Series of Boxing is one of the most exciting emerging sport leagues in the world. Bringing together the best boxers on the planet to compete in a team format across ten weight categories, the WSB represents a whole new way of thinking about boxing.

Being the world’s first truly global boxing league with franchises from four continents – Africa, America, Asia and Europe – the WSB promotes a transparent scoring system, bringing with it a much needed world-leading governance and commercial guidance to international boxing.

This unique team-versus-team approach has resulted in some of the most exciting clashes imaginable between the world’s top fighters on an International scale. USA vs. Mexico, Germany vs. Italy, and Ukraine vs. Russia rank are amongst the major matches that boxing fans have been given the chance to enjoy through the past four seasons of WSB competition.

Team scoring is conducted, based on the outcome of five three-minute bouts, and WSB teams are in two groups, A and B. Cuba qualified for the WSB Playoffs on top of Group B with a 9-1 record, while USA came in fourth in Group B at 4-6. Cuba defeated the USA, 5-0, last Friday night in Havana in the opening round of the WSB playoffs.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. ET. Three USA/New England boxing matches start at 8 p.m.: open class light heavyweights Manny Teo (Framingham, MA) vs. John Worley (Westford, MA), open middleweights John Xafaris (Nashua, NH) vs. Brian Paulino (Providence, RI), novice class bantamweights Danny Pang (Portland, ME) vs. Jose Rivera (Lawrence, MA).

The action picks up from 9-11 p.m. as the USA Knockouts take on the Cuba Domadores, airing on Univision in addition to being viewed around the world in 80 different countries.

All boxers and matches are subject to change.

Tickets prices are $50.00 for VIP reserved ringside (first two rows), $20 general admission, and are on sale at the Rockingham Park box office.

TELEVISA AND FOX DEPORTES TAKE SPRING BREAK IN CANCUN ON SATURDAY, APRIL 12

LOS ANGELES (Apr. 9) – Unbeaten in 31 professional fights, Torreon, Coahuila Mexico’s Roberto “Massa” Ortiz has punched his way to the top of the 140-pound weight class. But in the process, he’s got a slew of fellow contenders looking to take his WBC Silver Super Lightweight Title, and on Saturday, April 12, Rosario, Sinaloa, Mexico’s Ramiro “Xixime” Alcaraz will be next in line to challenge him in a 12-round bout that headlines a Televisa and FOX Deportes-televised card from the Grand Oasis Arena in Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico.

In the 10-round co-main event, female junior flyweights meet, as Tepic, Nayarit Mexico’s Anabel “Avispa” Ortiz battles Mexico City’s Ivonne “Chiquita” Rosas.

Currently ranked fourth in the world by the WBC, Roberto “Massa” Ortiz (30-0-1, 23 KOs) is rapidly closing in on a shot at Danny “Swift” Garcia’s world championship, but the 28-year-old has business to tend to against Perea first on April 12. The WBC Silver champion since June of 2011, he has since successfully defended his belt a remarkable nine times, most recently winning a hard-fought 12 round unanimous decision over Reyes Sanchez last October. Now he begins 2014 with hopes it culminates with a world title belt around his waist.

Eager to capitalize on recent performances in which he split two fights with highly-regarded Antonio Lozada Jr., Ramiro “Xixime” Alcaraz (14-3-1, 8 KOs) is a determined up and comer who can take his career to the next level with a win over Ortiz on Saturday. Winner of nine of his 11 bouts, Alcaraz believes now is his time to shine.

Nicknamed “Avispa” or “The Wasp,” Anabel Ortiz (12-3, 2 KOs) knows how to sting opponents in the ring, and while her WBA World Minimum weight title won’t be on the line in this bout, expect her to fight with all the intensity she always shows in the ring. Already a decorated competitor with several titles to her name at 27, Ortiz is determined to show the world that she’s one of the best in the game, pound-for-pound.

Ivonne “Chiquita” Rosas (10-6-1, 2 KOs) has been competing professionally since 2010, paying her dues while battling through the tough Mexican boxing circuit. On April 12, the 23-year-old Rosas will risk her three-fight winning streak, but she knows that with a win over a world champion like Ortiz, she will make a statement that she is ready for a title shot.

Ortiz vs. Alcaraz, a 12-round bout for Ortiz’ WBC Silver Super Lightweight Title, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Cancun Boxing Pepe Gomez and sponsored by Corona. Doors open at 6pm CT and the first fight begins at 6:30pm CT. The Televisa broadcast will air on Canal 5 and begins at 10:30pm CST and the FOX Deportes broadcast will air at 10pm ET.

he April 12 edition ESPN Friday Night Fights presented by Corona Extra and ESPN Deportes’ Noche de Combates presentado por Corona Extra – which will take place on the eve of the WBO Welterweight title rematch between Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao and Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley Jr.– will feature two-time Middleweight world title challenger Giovanni “Chico Malo” Lorenzo (33-6, 25 KOs) and undefeated Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramírez (27-0, 21 KOs) in the 10-round Super Middleweight main event.

Friday’s show, from the Mandalay Bay Casino in Las Vegas, will air live at 10 p.m. on ESPN2 and 10:30 p.m. on ESPN Deportes. Both shows will also be available on computers, smartphones, tablets, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, and Roku via WatchESPN. The card is promoted by Top Rank.

Commentators:
Todd Grisham (@GrishamESPN), filling in for Joe Tessitore, will be ringside with Teddy Atlas describing the action for ESPN2. Delvin Rodríguez and Pablo Viruega will call the fights ringside for Noche de Combates (Fight Night) on ESPN Deportes, while Leopoldo González and Claudia Trejos will anchor the studio from Las Vegas. Bilingual reporter Bernardo Osuna (@osunaespn) will present live interviews and reports for both shows.

Pacquiao vs. Bradley 2 coverage:
Friday Night Fights and Noche de Combates will preview Pacquiao vs. Bradley 2 and will include interviews with both fighters. Read more about ESPN’s multi-platform coverage of Pacquiao vs. Bradley 2.

Main Event:
The Dominican Republic’s Lorenzo is coming off a fourth-round TKO win over Robinson Pena, while Mexico’s Ramírez scored a first-round TKO win over Don Mouton in his last outing.

After Ramírez’s fight with Mouton, ESPN.com’s Dan Rafael wrote, “Ramírez might just be the next big fighter out of Mexico. The 22-year-old southpaw has movie star looks and an aggressive fighting style that should make him a fan favorite. The fact that he defeated Mouton was no big surprise as Mouton has now lost four bouts in a row. But it was rather shocking how easily and violently Ramírez dusted him…. This fight was short but a very impressive victory for Ramírez.”

Lorenzo’s co-manager Rich Ryan said of Friday’s fight, “Giovanni (Lorenzo) is different from the guys Ramírez has fought — he goes to the body, he mixes it up, he’s got a lot of experience….I think this fight’s going the distance, or Giovanni knocks him out. If Giovanni hurts him, it’s over. I don’t see it going the other way.”

Co-Feature:
Friday’s eight-round co-feature will pit undefeated Super Middleweight Jesse “Hard Work” Hart (12-0, 10 KOs), against Samuel “The Main Event” Clarkson (10-2, 6 KOs). Philadelphia’s Hart is coming off a six-round unanimous decision win over Derrick Findley, while Clarkson of Texas is looking to continue his winning ways following a six- round unanimous decision win over previously undefeated Chad Trahan.

JOSHUA CLOTTEY DOMINATES ANTHONY MUNDINE

pacquiao_clottey_weighin_100312_006a
Joshua “The Grandmaster” Clottey went down under (Australia) and fought a virtuoso of a fight as he thoroughly dominated hometown hero Anthony Mundine over 12 rounds to win the WBA International Jr. Middleweight title.

From the very start Clottey showed he was the better fighter and imposed his will on Mundine. Clottey took the fight to Mundine and scored the first of what would be five knockdowns in the 3rd round. The assault continued with Clottey scoring two more knockdowns in the 6th, and one in each the 8th round and 10th round.

The scores were unanimous, 116-108, 115-109, and 117-108 all for Clottey. The fight took place at the Entertainment Center in New South Wales, Australia.

Mundine fought on bravely despite his corner wanting to stop the fight on several occasions but had no answer for the skill, power, and will of Clottey.
This was the most significant win for Clottey since his World Championship victory over Zab Judah in 2008, for IBF Welterweight crown.

Star Boxing CEO and Founder Joe DeGuardia had this to say about Clottey’s performance ” I am thrilled that Joshua was victorious today. I knew when I signed Joshua to a promotional agreement he would still be a major force in the Jr. Middleweight division. Joshua has the ability to defeat any Jr. Middleweight in the world and this win sets up potentially major fights for Joshua with the likes of Canelo Alvarez, Erislandy Lara, and my Jr. Middleweight champion, Demetrius Andrade. I am looking forward to Joshua’s journey back to the World Championship”.

Rhys Pagan takes on Mike Towell as they clash for Scottish Light Middleweight on saturday night in Paisley

On Saturday night Both Rhys Pagan and Mike Towell have vowed to leave nothing in the ring as both look to pick up the Scottish Light Middleweight Title, as they headline Saltire Boxing’s second card of 2014, at the Paisley Lagoon Leisure Centre.

With a knockout win over tough Bulgarian Valentin Stoychev in his last fight, Sanquhar’s Rhys Pagan has not left the gym since that win in February “I haven’t stopped training as I really want to get my hands on the Scottish title. I know my promoter has tried to make the fight with a few in the division, and they have rejected it, so credit to Mike (Towell) for having the guts to get into the ring with me.
He adds “I have been training hard, and I am looking forward to fighting the ten round distance for the first time. I am aware of Towell and am expecting a tough night, but I will be leaving with the belt round my waist.

With three fights on his record, Dundee based Mike Towell is also looking forward to the fight “This is why you turn professional, to win titles. This will be my first time over Six rounds, but I am ready for what ever Pagan has. I have seen one or two of his fights, and he’s a good fighter, but I am relishing the chance and will give it everything and will bring that title back up the road with me to Dundee.

Pleased at having the Pagan v Towell fight headline his show, Saltire boxing’s Colin Bellshaw said “ This is a Perfect Boxer v Fighter match up we have here. I believe this is the making of another domestic classic following Kelly v Campbell from last show that we had. I find the crowd get more excited by a domestic title fights, and I know this will deliver for them.
Saltire Boxing present an Evening of Championship Boxing this Saturday 12 April at the Paisley Lagoon Leisure Centre.
Doors at 6pm, first fight at 7pm.

HENNESSY SPORTS OFFICIAL STATEMENT REGARDING JAMES DEGALE

London (April 9) Hennessy Sports confirms that at the end of last week James DeGale terminated his Promotional Rights Agreement with the company. The contract was due to run for several more years. ??

DeGale has been exclusively promoted by Hennessy Sports since September 2012 and in that time has successfully fought six times, all of his UK bouts having been broadcast under the “Hennessy Sports” banner live on Channel 5 including his successful challenge for the WBC Silver super middleweight title.

??Following his run of successful bouts and under the promotional guidance of Hennessy Sports DeGale had recently been made mandatory challenger for the prestigious WBC world super middleweight title and had also been named in a final eliminator to become mandatory challenger for the prestigious IBF world super middleweight title, a path that would have led to a domestic super fight against the winner of Carl Froch and George Groves.??

Mick Hennessy commented: “We are extremely surprised and disappointed that DeGale has terminated his long term contract with us. The agreement had several years to run and we had put him into an excellent position on the world super middleweight stage. Unfortunately the company has been given no alternative but to put the matter into the hands of its lawyers and we are currently considering our legal options against DeGale. We are also extremely concerned about the possible involvement of any other parties in DeGale’s decision to terminate our contract and if necessary we will take the appropriate legal action against any other promoter, broadcaster or sanctioning body that is found to have been involved in this decision.”

??No further comment will be made by the company on this issue whilst it considers its options.

ASHLEY THEOPHANE BLOG: CITY OF DREAMS

ashley-theophane
The stage is set at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, with just four weeks to go until the biggest boxing event of the year happens.

Floyd Mayweather vs Marcos Maidana, Amir Khan vs Lou Collazo, Adrien Broner vs Carlos Molina, JLeon Love vs Periban and of course, yours truly. It will be the biggest and ‘baddest’ show on the planet this year by far.
Another hard week’s training completed. The ‘Doghouse’, (which is what the Mayweather Boxing Club is known as) is full of talented fighters. Sparring is always intense and can lead to much soul searching! If you can’t improve and up your game among such talented fighters, you are in the wrong profession.
The Money Team have been in training camp for five weeks now. The pounds are dropping off as we train hard in the unforgiving Las Vegas heat. All our fitness levels are increasing in these high altitude conditions.
This city is well known for being full of sin, but it is also full of dreams. I’m living my dream, and whilst being out here, the dream has gotten bigger. The pressure has become seriously intense, but I really believe in my dream. I believe in myself. The doubters come towards you, especially when big dreams are close to becoming reality, but proving people wrong and transforming non-believers into believers, is what I have come to do best.
I give my all and I lay it all on the line, as Mike Tyson famously said “Destroy or be destroyed” and Marvin Hagler stated “Destruct and destroy”. You can’t play at boxing. We are Spartans, barbarians, gladiators, warriors – all rolled into one. We risk our lives for glory and monetary gain. Many ask is it really worth it? I definitely believe so!
This week I completed my physical, blood work and eye test for my Nevada State Athletic commission license. I passed with flying colours!
So much goes into preparing for a fight and making the big fights happen. Boxing fans and boxing writers will never truly know how it all comes together. Being part of the world’s number one boxer’s team, I am privileged and blessed with the added knowledge and thinking of Floyd Mayweather. He generously shares how he breaks down the business, and how we as fighters can achieve the highest heights in and outside of the boxing ring. Thank you Floyd!
Floyd wants us to be the greatest that we can all be. Being the British representative in Mayweather Promotions; it is an honour and a privilege to represent The Money Team and Great Britain on the biggest stage in the world. I’m benefitting from being backed by a powerful and supportive team.
The stakes are high but hey, we are in Las Vegas. It’s the gambler’s paradise; so it’s all about rolling the dice and taking the chances as they appear.
Let the games begin!
I was born ready for these great days.

BURGIN-TRADER FIGHT TOPS PRELIM CARD APRIL 12 AT BALLY’S ATLANTIC CITY —FIGHT LIVE ON GFL

Atlantic City, NJ—Junior lightweight prospect Anthony Burgin faces his toughest test as a young pro when he takes on fellow-Philadelphian Frank Trader in a scheduled six-round match Saturday evening, April 12, in the Grand Ballroom at Bally’s Atlantic City.

Topping the seven-bout card is a 10-round junior lightweight contest between Jason Sosa, of Camden, NJ, and Michael Brooks, of Nassau, Long Island.
The entire card, which includes an eight-round middleweight match between Thomas LaManna, of Millville, NJ, and Ahsandi Gibbs, of Tampa, FL, will be streamed live by www.gofightlive.tv.
First fight is 7.30 p.m.
Burgin, 22 accepted the six-round fight with Trader—his first at that distance—despite not having fought since Aug. 24, when he earned a four-round decision over Jose Del Valle, of New York, at Bally’s.
A pro since 2012, Burgin is 5-0, 1 K0, but lacks the pro experience Trader brings to the table.
“I asked Anthony if he was up to the challenge and he told me to go ahead and make the fight and I like to hear that from a fighter,” said trainer Raul Rivas. “We’ve been getting terrific work in camp and he’s ready.”
Trader, 28, is 10-1-1, 2 K0s, and coming off a four-round draw Feb. 7 in Philadelphia with Israel Suarez, of Puerto Rico. Trader’s lone setback was a six-round decision loss to Adrian Perez, of Sarasota, FL, early in 2012 at the Foxwoods Casino In Mashantucket, CT.
A pro since 2005, Trader has beaten Philadelphians Georgi Kevlishvili and Jules Blackwell.
Four additional fights complete the card.

BRADLEY OVERCOMES DEATH THREATS AS HE LOOKS TO PROVE HE’S THE RIGHTFUL CHAMPION AGAINST SUPERSTAR MANNY PACQUIAO LIVE ON BOXNATION

Bradley_TNT_140408_003a
LONDON (April 9) – World champion Tim Bradley has spoke of overcoming death threats following his controversial victory over Manny Pacquiao.

The two pound-for-pound stars will meet again this weekend, live and exclusive on BoxNation, as they look to confine their contentious 2012 battle to the past and prove categorically who the superior fighter is.

Following Bradley’s split decision win, he has spoke on overcoming a very difficult period in his career that eventually saw him bounce back in emphatic style with wins over WBO light-welterweight world champion Ruslan Provodnikov and the great Juan Manuel Marquez.

“Beating Pacquiao was supposed to be the turning point in who Timothy Bradley really is but instead it became a very dark point and time in my life,” said Bradley. “The boos turned into hatred and then hatred turned into death threats. I felt I had done enough to beat Pacquiao but everyone was out to prove that I hadn’t.

“This was supposed to be my night but instead it turned into a night where an icon not only lost but was also “robbed” by me. Everyone sat there shocked without realising that I had just done what I set myself to do. No one stopped for a second and acknowledged my accomplishment,” he said.

The unbeaten Bradley, who has 31 wins on his record, is using Saturday night’s clash as a chance to finally silence his critics.

“Although I am certain I won the fight it is now time to once again show the world who Timothy Bradley really is. On April 12 we will settle once and for all the uncertainty of boxing followers and those of the fans,” he said.

“This is my chance at redemption and I promise I will make the most of it,” Bradley stated.

The Californian goes into this weekend’s fight knowing that question marks have arisen over Pacquiao’s desire to keep boxing, particularly given recent performances, one of which saw him sensationally knocked out against Mexican ace Marquez.

The 30-year-old Bradley doesn’t believe he needs the knockout, but should it be there, he will happily oblige.

“I am in a slight different position than Marquez was. I have already beat Pacquiao once and that was on my first try. I don’t think I have to knock him out to get a definite result but if the knockout presents itself I will take advantage of it,” said Bradley.

“The first fight I injured my foot in the second round and by the fourth round my ankle on my other foot was also messed up. The second half of the fight I was coming on strong with two bad feet. I didn’t have the movement that I normally have and I was out-working him,” Bradley explained.

“I was fighting all three minutes of every round and not just the last thirty seconds of every round. This second fight against Manny Pacquiao I will pick up right where I left off the first fight. This will just be rounds thirteen through twenty four,” he said.

The reigning WBO welterweight champion will also take confidence in the fact he managed to beat Pacquiao conqueror Marquez so convincingly, a wider victory than what the scorecards suggested.

“I was able to show my boxing ability against Marquez with two good feet so this will be no different. I will be faster than Pacquiao, I will have better defence than Pacquiao, I will be hungrier than Pacquiao.

“I have been in the ring with Pacquiao so I know exactly what to expect. There are a few adjustments that I will make, and with two good feet under me, and at the end of the night I will be victorious again,” said a confident Bradley.

Earlier in the evening BoxNation viewers will also get the chance to see rising super-middleweight star Frank Buglioni in action as he defends his WBO European title against Sergey Khomitsky, live from the Copper Box Arena.

Also featuring on the bill will be Tony Conquest who puts his Commonwealth cruiserweight title on the line against Ovill McKenzie, with undefeated Bradley Skeete taking on Italian Tobia Giuseppe Loriga.

Further good news for viewers is that BoxNation will be the only place to see heavyweight David Price’s matchup against Ondrej Pala from Denmark this Saturday.

Pacquiao vs. Bradley 2 is live on BoxNation (Sky 437/490HD & Virgin 546) this Sunday at 2am. Visit www.boxnation.com to subscribe.

Top Contender Arash Usmanee Lands Huge Opportunity in Pacquiao vs. Bradley 2 Co-Main

Afghani-Canadian super featherweight contender Arash Usmanee (20-1-1, 10 KOs) will step into the highest-profile fight of his life on short notice and face WBO #1 ranked Raymundo Beltran (28-6-1, 17 KOs) for the WBO NABO Lightweight title this Saturday, April 12, in the co-main event of the HBO Pay-Per-View card featuring the Timothy Bradley vs. Manny Pacquiao rematch at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

An extended illness suffered by former two-time world champion Roman “Rocky” Martínez forced him to cancel, creating the huge opportunity for Usmanee, who was already in the gym preparing for another fight.

Promoted by Top Rank, in association with MP Promotions and Tecate, Pacquiao vs. Bradley 2 will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT. Pacquiao vs. Bradley 2 tickets, priced starting $435, are now available for purchase at Ticketnetwork. To charge by phone with a major credit card, call Buy Tickets Center at (855) 859-4045.

Usmanee is ranked #9 at super featherweight by the IBF. Born in Kabul, Afghanistan, he and his family moved to Alberta, Canada, when he was three years old. He now resides in Las Vegas, Nevada. The aggressive 32-year-old’s career has been marred by controversy thus far, as his two biggest career fights have both ended with questionable outcomes. In his only defeat, Usmanee dropped a highly controversial 12-round decision to Rances “Kid Blast” Barthelemy on January 4 of last year. Fighting for the IBF #2 ranking and live on ESPN Friday Night Fights, Usmanee appeared to take the fight over at the midway point and grew more dominant as the rounds wore on. However, the judges saw it another way.

And then, in August of last year, Usmanee missed winning a world championship by a single point when he fought to a draw with Dominican champion Argenis Mendez at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Verona, New York.

Beltran has also seen his share of hard luck in the ring. He was last seen fighting to a very debatable draw with then-world champion Ricky Burns in September of last year. Burns was down in the eighth and suffered a broken jaw in the second round that subsequently required the insertion of a titanium plate to repair. And yet it was not enough to sway the judges, as the fight was held in Burns’ homeland of Scotland.

As tough as they come, 32-year-old Beltran was born in Los Mochis, Mexico, but now lives in Phoenix, Arizona.

The pair will not only be vying for the WBO NABO Lightweight title, but also a place in the front of the line to face new champion Terence Crawford, who defeated Burns by decision in March of this year.

Usamanee’s promoter, Greg Cohen of Greg Cohen Promotions, says the match-up has explosive written all over it.

“Neither of these guys take many backwards steps in the ring. It’s going to be a war of attrition from the first round. You could easily say this is a battle between the uncrowned IBF Champion and the uncrowned WBO Champion. It’s a very high-level match-up between two of the toughest guys in the sport. It’s going to be a sensational slugfest!”
