Decaire Decisions Mungia to keep World title shot hope alive

GATINEAU, QUEBEC, Canada (March 25, 2014) — French-Canadian welterweight contender Antonin Decarie (30-2, 9 KOs) remained on track for another world title shot as he overcame a serious cut to defeat former Mexican champion Pablo Munguia (20-4, 11 KOs) in last night’s (Friday, Mar. 29) main event in the seventh installment of the popular Fight Night Series, promoted by Eye of the Tiger Management, at Lac Leamy Casino in Gatineau, Ontario, Canada.

Fight Club Series aired live on pay-per-view in the United States, distributed by Integrated Sports Media on both cable and satellite pay-per-view via DIRECTV, iN Demand, DISH, and Avail-TVN. The event was also available to watch worldwide on PPV at www.PunchingGrace.com, the new hi-definition streaming network.

“We’re very pleased with the feedback and numbers we’ve already received from people in Canada who enjoyed watching the fights, especially those from Quebec because there so many familiar fighters in action,” EOTTM president Camille Estephan said. “We’ve also heard from people in America who watched on pay-per-view and those from all over the world who watched on Punching Grace. They said the fights were well matched and very entertaining. One of our own guys lost (Baha Laham) in what is an early candidate for Fight of the Year in Canada. It’s good for boxing.”

WBC #8 and IBF #13 rated Decarie (29-2, 9 KOs) suffered a cut eye at the end of the fifth round from an unintentional head-butt by southpaw Munguia. Despite being adversely effected by the flow of blood into his eye, Decarie emerged with a 10-round decision (98-92, 97-93, 96-94) over a game Munguia.

And the winner is…..Antonin Decaire

“Antonin fought a tough, awkward, physically strong opponent who kept coming forward,” Estephan commented. “After his loss to (Luis Carlos) Abregu there were some things missing, so we wanted Antonin to be exposed to a fighter like Munguia. This was a perfect fight for him and he passed the test for his third win in a row. He had to deal with a cut, too. He should be moving up in the ratings and is on the right path towards a world title fight.”

In the co-feature, southpaw Roody Pierre-Paul (9-1, 5 KOs) won a dominant 10-round decision (97-91, 97-91, 96-92) over Baha Laham (12-2-2, 5 KOs) for vacant WBC Continental Americas super featherweight title.

Haitian super middleweight prospect Schiller Hyppolite (9-1, 5 KOs) stopped Bahamian invader Jermain “Choo Choo” Mackey (18-8, 14 KOs), who was unable to continue after six rounds in a scheduled 10-round bout;

The professional debut of highly-touted Canadian amateur star, 18-year-old Steven Butler (1-0, 1 KO), was an overwhelming success as he registered a first-round technical knockout of Jean-Francois Plourde (2-0, 1 KO).

Butler, who had a 48-6 amateur record, was the youngest Canadian National Champion. He was a four-time winner in the Bronze Glove Tournament, as well as gold-medalist at the Silver Gloves, Adidas and Golden Gloves tournaments.

“Steven Butler is a blue-chip prospect,” Estephan added. “He has power and is a mean and vicious fighter. He has it all and is going to be a star.”

Also fighting on the undercard, super middleweight Francois “The Tank” Miville (7-1, 3 KOs) scored a first-round technical knockout victory against previously unbeaten Pascal Villeneuve (3-1, 2 KOs), super middleweight Mitch Louis-Charles (3-1-2, 2 KOs) and Guillaume Tremblay-Coude (2-0-1, 1 KO) fought to a four-round draw, cruiserweight Samer Baraket (3-0, 2 KOs) remained unbeaten by way of a first-round stoppage of Matt Hein (0-3), and heavyweight Steven Harvey (5-1, 2 KOs) took a close four-round decision (38-37 X 3) from Zack Bunce (2-0, 1 KO).

Chatman outworks veteran Brewer

LINCOLN, R.I. (March 28th, 2014) – Chris Chatman couldn’t help but let his emotions get the best of him.

Shortly after beating Grady Brewer Friday night at Twin River Casino, a fight he dedicated to both his grandmother, who passed away this past week, and his late manager Mark Dion, who died from Lou Gehrig’s disease earlier this year, Chatman sat in his corner and cried uncontrollably, a welcomed display of humility for a fighter on the brink of stardom.

The hard-hitting southpaw from Jersey City took another step toward his dream of winning a world title, beating The Contender Season 2 champion by unanimous decision, 79-73, 80-72, 79-73, in the main event of Classic Entertainment & Sports’ professional boxing show, a back-and-forth war from start to finish.

Chatman (12-3-1) has now won three times in four tries at Twin River, including his win over Rhode Island’s Thomas Falowo in July. Against the 43-year-old veteran Brewer, Chatman fought with the same reckless abandon, pressing the action from the opening bell and wearing down Brewer in the later rounds. Brewer (30-19) has now lost five consecutive bouts.

The always-entertaining Zack Ramsey (7-0) of Springfield, Mass., remained unbeaten in the six-round co-feature, defeating 33-fight veteran Shakha Moore (11-20-3) of Norwalk, Conn., 40-36, on each scorecard. The slick Ramsey used his superior speed defensively and offensively, toying with the overmatched Moore. He picked his spots, utilizing his lightning-quick left jab and overhand right, and kept out of harm’s way throughout the fight, frustrating Moore, who lacked the speed to close the gap on Ramsey.

Chattanooga, Tenn., prospect Ryan Martin (4-0, 3 KOs), promoted by platinum rapper 50 Cent, put on a show in a second-round knockout win over Justin Robbins (2-6) of Springfield, Ill. The taller, leaner Martin bloodied Robbins early in the fight and then sent him crashing to the canvas with an overhand right at the 2-minute, 42-second mark of the second round, prompting referee Joey Lupino to stop the fight.

Welterweight Nick DeLomba (3-0) of Cranston, R.I., a protégé of Gary “Tiger” Balletto, kept his perfect record intact, outlasting Providence veteran Josh Beeman (5-15-3) by unanimous decision, 40-36, on all three scorecards. The crafty Beeman, who took the fight on short notice, held his own, but DeLomba’s speed was the difference as he controlled the center of the ring from the opening bell.

Heavyweight Jesse Barboza (8-1-1) of Hyannis, Mass., won a hard-fought unanimous decision against East Stroudsburg, Pa., native Glenn Thomas (1-2) in the opening bout, 40-36, on all three scorecards, and Providence middleweight KJ Harrison-Lombardi improved to 5-0-1 with a 38-38, 39-37, 39-37 majority-decision win over the tough Jason Bakanowski (0-2) of Worcester, Mass.

Interview with Skipp Scott and Promoter Kerry Daigle: ‘We’ll see what happens to Washington when he gets cracked.’

Heavyweight Skipp “Strictly Business” Scott (16-1, 10 KOs), and his promoter, Kerry Daigle of Keeppunching Entertainment, sat down for an interview today about Scott’s upcoming nationally televised showdown.

The 6′ 8″ Scott, of Houston, Texas, is in the final stages of training to meet fellow up-and-coming prospect Gerald “El Gallo Negro” Washington (11-0, 8 KOs) in the 10-round co-main event on Thursday, April 3, when Golden Boy Live! presents “Night Of The Heavyweights,” a tripleheader of heavyweight action on FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes, from the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California.

In the 10-round main event, unbeaten Cuban Luis Ortiz will take on long-time top contender and world-title challenger Monte Barrett and, in the televised opener, 2012 U.S. Olympian Dominic “Trouble” Breazeale will face veteran Nagy Aguilera.

Scott and Daigle are completely convinced the fight against Washington, in which they are being brought in as the “opponent”, will turn out to be Scott’s introduction to the boxing world. Daigle calls it a “miscalculation” on Golden Boy’s part to put their fighter in against his man. Scott says he will there that night to “seek and destroy.”

Skipp Scott

Skipp, how have preparations gone for this fight?

I’ve had over 60 rounds of sparring and we are coming down to the fine-tuning right now. My conditioning is excellent and I’m ready for 10-12 rounds. My strength is improving every week. We have prepared exceptionally well for Washington’s style. I’m just ready to fight and anxious to make a statement.
You mentioned you feel disrespected by the publicity leading up to this fight, why is that?

Yes, I do. In looking at the publicity and posters on Golden Boy Promotions site, all you see is the ‘local’ guys. It’s as if they are just going through the motions and bringing in opponents that aren’t going in to compete. That is totally disrespectful. My promoter, Keeppunching Entertainment, has never disrespected a boxer and always given them their props.

All I can say that has motivated me to go out and ‘seek and destroy’ and I plan on putting this 6′ 8″ 270-pound frame in full gear to deliver a message. I haven’t lost in seven years and lost my pro debut by decision to a guy that was on the verge of knockout when the bell rang. I feel they underestimated me in making this fight for several reasons. One, I lost my pro debut to the guy Washington just fought and controversially stopped on his feet… That wasn’t a knockout.

Second, I haven’t fought in a year but I have lived in the gym looking for this opportunity. This fight was scheduled three other times and was called off for various reasons.

Third, I’ve been dropped before, big deal. It’s still a big mistake on their part. Getting knocked down is one thing, getting up and winning is another. We’ll see what happens to Washington when he gets cracked. And when he goes down, if he will get up.

What do you think of Washington as a fighter? What do you see in him?

He looks good physically, but I don’t see anything special. He’s a football player/athlete. I’m a boxer/athlete. That is the first difference. He has a decent right hand against opposition that didn’t want to be there and hasn’t fought anyone that is really going to fight back and can punch with him. I don’t plan on this going 10 rounds. We have a great battle plan. He will be in places in the ring that will test him to see if he really wants to be a boxer. I’m not going anywhere. This is the first opponent he’s faced that is coming to win… and win big.

This is your first big TV showcase, any extra nerves?
No, not at all. The nerves are when you are fighting in your hometown. This is going to be fun – no stress – the pressure will be on Washington.

Kerry Daigle

Kerry, how did you meet Skipp?

Actually, I had a light-heavyweight professional working out and training in Houston, a former winner of several national championships as an amateur, with over 250 fights, that knows boxing. He called me every day for a week telling me about this giant in the gym that was working out and wanting to change over from a kickboxing career (85-5) to a boxing career and turn professional.

He kept telling me to come look at this guy, Skipp. I traveled to Houston, liked what I saw, and put him in a pro debut which he lost by decision and was dropped. I saw this guy (Skipp) ‘get back up’ and pummel his opponent but too late to get the decision. His heart and desire to win captured me.

Being in boxing 40 years plus you can always find someone that can punch and throw a lot of punches, but when you see a guy get dropped and get fierce and stronger – you can’t teach that and I was right. He went on to win his next 16 fights and learned the game and became a great student. I was right then and I’m right now with this match. It’s a perfect match for us. It’s Skipp’s mental strength that is his biggest asset.

Tell me about the decision to take this fight. Obviously they think they’re bringing you in as an opponent. What makes you think your man can pull off this upset?

Of course they are, but in reality Washington is the opponent. He has NEVER faced anyone that is going to fight him hard; someone bigger than him, taller than him and in tremendous condition that can take your head off, or outbox you. He’s never fought anyone close to Skipp Scott and I believe this fight is about 7-10 fights too early for Washington.

Washington is not ready. We know what we are facing. We saw the last fight and how he stopped his last opponent. That was not a stoppage. He’s going to have to do much better than that to beat Skipp and that won’t happen. It’s STRICTLY BUSINESS time! This is NOT going to be an upset. It’s going to be a win. You could call it a miscalculation on their part. I’m loving the fight and so do all the cornermen we are working with.

CONGRESSMAN PACQUIAO and PRESIDENT CLINTON BRING THE POLITICAL PARTY TO “JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE!”

Pacquiao_NY_140205_003a
HOLLYWOOD, CALIF. (March 28, 2014) – Pound for pound electoral champions, Fighter of the Decade CONGRESSMAN MANNY “Pacman” PACQUIAO and PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON, will bring the political party to Jimmy Kimmel Live! Next Wednesday, April 2, on ABC, beginning at 11:35 P.M. ET / 10:35 P.M. CT. This will mark the eighth time Pacquiao has appeared on Kimmel’s popular late-night talk show — more than any other active fighter — in their series of entertaining appearances together dating back to November 3, 2009 (the week before Pacquiao vs. Miguel Cotto). It was on that night that Pacquiao unveiled his singing chops, belting out a rendition of the Dan Hill-penned hit ballad “Sometimes When We Touch.” Subsequent appearances featured Pacquiao singing duets with Kimmel and Will Ferrell, and an uproarious send-up of HBO Sports’ “24/7” reality franchise, starring Pacquiao and Kimmel sidekick Guillermo.

That 2009 appearance also marked Manny’s U.S. network TV debut, which has since led to a multitude of network television, radio and magazine features for boxing’s only eight-division world champion, including, CBS’ 60 Minutes, ABC’s Good Morning America, CNN’s Piers Morgan Tonight, ABC’s Nightline, FOX News Channel’s On The Record With Greta Van Susteren, CNN’s America Morning, NPR’s Morning Edition and Weekend Edition, Playboy, Sports Illustrated and cover stories in TIME and Newsweek.

Pacquiao (55-5-2, 38 KOs), the lone congressional representative of the Sarangani province in the Philippines, is in deep training for the eagerly-anticipated WBO welterweight championship rematch against undefeated two-division world champion TIMOTHY “Desert Storm” BRADLEY (31-0, 12 KOs), of Palm Springs, Calif. This will also be Pacquiao’s first fight in the U.S. since 2012 as well as the first time he has ever challenged to regain a world title he formerly held.

Promoted by Top Rank®, in association with MP Promotions and Tecate, Pacquiao vs. Bradley 2 will take place, Saturday, April 12 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. It will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View® beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT.

When Pacquiao and Bradley rumbled the first time, on June 9, 2012 at MGM Grand, Bradley’s hand was raised via a controversial split decision, ending Pacquiao’s welterweight title reign as well as his seven-year, 15-bout winning streak. Though both fighters claimed victory neither was satisfied. Destiny may have played a hand in their first battle but it will be survival of the fittest that determines the winner of this exciting rematch.

Remaining tickets for Pacquiao vs. Bradley 2 are priced at $1,000, $800, $600, $400, $250 and $150, not including applicable service charges. There will be a total ticket limit of 12 per person with a limit of 10 per person at the $1,000, $800, $600, $400 and $250 price levels and a limit of two (2) per person at the $150 price level. To charge by phone with a major credit card, call Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000. Tickets will also be available for purchase at www.mgmgrand.com or www.ticketmaster.com.

24/7 Pacquiao/Bradley 2 premieres Tomorrow! Saturday, March 29, at Midnight ET/PT — on HBO. Show 2 debuts Saturday, April 5 at 11:30 p.m. ET/PT and show 3 debuts Thursday, April 10 at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT two nights before the high stakes welterweight title bout.

San Diego’s Ulises Sierra Looking to Impress Next Friday Night!

(San Diego, CA) – The last bout of twenty-five year old Ulises Sierra (5-0-1, 4KOs) of San Diego was a complete beat down of the late sub Loren “Rock” Myers in late February. In a contest scheduled for four rounds, Myers didn’t see the end of the bout since by the third round he was bloodied from a savage gash on his upper lip and visibly defeated in body and spirit.

“I felt I performed very well. I am still in the learning process of my career,” the only son of a Puerto Rican fighter and a Samoan mother. “I felt I did very well but there is always room for improvement which is what I am trying to do while I am in the gym. Get better and keep training hard.”

Quiet outside of the ring, Sierra, son of late 80s San Diego Padres pitcher Ulises “Candy” Sierra, turns into a beast inside of it who only sees red which makes for an all-action affair no matter who he faces. “I felt I performed very well. I am still in the learning process of my career. I felt I did well but there is always room for improvement which is what I am trying to do while I am in the gym. Get better and keep training hard.”

AMIR “KING” KHAN AND LUIS COLLAZO MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT

Amir Khan
Kelly Swanson
I’m going to go ahead and call this media conference call today the second moment of “THE MOMENT” for a fight that was announced this week. We have Amir “King” Khan and also Luis Collazo joining us today, along with Richard Schaefer, Chief Executive Officer of Golden Boy Promotions, and Stephen Espinoza, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Showtime. So, very exciting, and I’m going to turn it over to the participants and start with Richard Schaefer, who will make the introductions.

Richard Schaefer
I am truly excited to host this first conference call, which will be a part of a series of conference calls leading up to May 3rd. This is obviously not just an undercard fight. Khan and Collazo could headline by itself any main event, any SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING, and, frankly, without any question would fill up Barclays Center on its own.

The same can be said about Adrien Broner and his return. A lot of question marks there, how is he going to be? What affect will that fight have over what Maidana can bring to the table? Any? None? What kind of affects will it have when he returns to the ring on May 3? Clearly a main event on its own, and J’Leon Love and Marco Periban is a 50/50 fight, so just a great card.

I want to thank Floyd Mayweather for making this card happen. It’s the most expensive pay-per-view card we have ever put together, and I believe the most expensive card ever put together in the sport of boxing. I want to thank Floyd, I want to thank Stephen Espinoza and Showtime for making this happen, and, most importantly, I want to thank all the fighters to be on that card, because sometimes fighters-their ego gets into the way, and they’re going to say, “Well, you know, I know I’m a main event, and I know I can headline, and I know I can fill up the venue.” So, it takes special fighters who understand what benefit this brings to them to be on an event like this, and that’s exactly what Mayweather cards have become; they have become the events, they have to become must see TV. This is our sport’s version of the Super Bowl, and I think to be part of that, part of that event shows you that Amir Khan and Luis Collazo and Broner and Maidana and all those guys, they understand that, and they’re happy to be part of this big event on May 3rd.

So, thank you to Mayweather and Mayweather Promotions, but I want to thank the sponsors as well, Corona, O’Reilly Auto Parts, and AT&T, and I want to make you aware there are very few tickets left. As of yesterday, the gate number was just $100,000 shy, shy of $15 million; $14.9 million worth of tickets have been sold. A total sell-out will be $15.4 million; I think we have 283 tickets at $1500 left. There are none left, or it’s actually two left, at $1000, and there are 188 left at $750. The $550 ones are gone and the $350 ones are gone, so I anticipate any day that we are going to announce a complete sell-out.

I do want to announce that because it is virtually a sell-out now, but on Friday with the closed circuit seats in Las Vegas. We will have 35,000 closed circuit seats available in all of the different MGM Resorts properties and the closed circuit seats will be $75. So that will go on sale on Friday.

Now, before I’m going to introduce the fighters, I want to turn it over to the man behind SHOWTIME Sports and he is the main guy. He’s the Vice President and General Manager of SHOWTIME Sports, Stephen Espinoza.

Stephen Espinoza
I’d like to echo Richard’s remarks. With this undercard it’s clear that we are continuing the tradition that we started with Mayweather/Guerrero, and that is the commitment by Richard, by Mayweather Promotions, by Showtime PPV that we will put on high-quality undercards; two undercards, honestly, that far exceed what we, what is normally expected for an undercard. In particular I’ve got to thank Floyd for making the investment, and truly it is a financial investment, because as Richard said, this is the most expensive undercard that we, that we are aware of, you know, possibly in history, and that money has to come from somewhere. So this truly is an investment in the sport.

Last, but not least, I’d like to obviously thank Amir and Luis. It is no surprise that they took this fight. Both Amir and Luis have always taken on all comers. I’m very excited. I think this is the fight that may actually steal the show on the entire night of May 3. Amir, as you all know, is an aggressive, fan-friendly fighter. There’s never been a boring Khan fight. He is always in exciting fights.

You also know Luis Collazo very well. He’s faced the elite in his weight class, namely Ricky Hatton, Shane Mosley and Andre Berto. On my scorecards he beat at least two of the three of those guys. He is a very aggressive, fan-friendly fighter, and so I expect fireworks in this one. I can’t wait.

R. Schaefer
Indeed, I believe this to be a 50/50 fight. I can give you ten reasons why Collazo is going to win, and I can give you ten reasons why Khan is going to win. Luis Collazo has been waiting for this opportunity; he knows what it takes to get there. He is the current WBA International Welterweight Champion, and he’s a former WBA Welterweight Champion, has been fighting at 147 his entire career, he is strong, big, dangerous, and comes off most recently an amazing, huge victory with his blistering second round knockout victory over favorite former world champion, Victor Ortiz.

It’s the moment Luis has been waiting for. He knows it’s a big fight, he knows it’s a big fight on the biggest stage of the sport, and I know that he is going to be ready. I know he is going to be well prepared, and I know that he is going want walk away with that victory over Amir Khan on May the 3rd.

He is a terrific guy, he’s known, as well, as “THE PEOPLE’S CHAMP,” and I’d like to turn it over now to Luis Collazo, with a record of 35-5, 18 knockouts, of Brooklyn, New York.

Luis Collazo
I’m excited, you know, I’m stoked. This is a fight that could take me to another level in the welterweight division, and I’m just very humbled by the opportunity. And May 3 is going to be a great night of boxing.

R. Schaefer
Thanks, Luis. Then, he is going to be fighting one of the most popular fighters in the sport, a big star in the United Kingdom who has gained a huge fan base here in the United States, as well. Why? Because he is very committed to the sport, he’s always exciting. I’ve never seen Amir Khan in a bad fight.

I mean, the guy’s got balls, you know? And in the ring and outside of the ring, taking on somebody like Luis Collazo, moving up in weight, not just taking some sort of a tune up, but he wants to go in the welterweight division with a bang. And he and his team, they picked somebody who is clearly bigger, is more experienced, and Amir Khan is going to want to make a statement on May the 3.

He is the former Unified Super Lightweight World Champion, blistering speed, has entertained us over the years, has solidified his claim as being one of the best fighters in the world by unifying a couple of years ago with 140-pound titles with the fifth round knockout over former world champion Zab Judah. He had a dramatic win, 12 round, unanimous decision win over Marcos Maidana; a fight which was voted as Boxing Writer’s Association of America 2010 Fight of the Year.

So, he is coming back in a big fight, on the biggest stage, and I’m very happy for Amir to be able to perform from Las Vegas and show the world what he is all about. It is a pleasure now for me to introduce to you Amir “King” Khan.

Amir Khan
Yeah, it’s going to be wonderful to be on the huge card, you know, the Floyd Mayweather card, and it’s going to be a big show for us. I’m looking forward to the big fight against Luis Collazo. You know, it’s my first fight at 147. I’m excited, I really believe that I belong in the welterweight division; it’s going to be my division for my future career.

We’ve been training hard, working hard. It’s a pleasure to be here, I’m in America and I’ve been enjoying every minute of training, and I’m looking forward to the fight. I really believe, you know, this fight between me and Luis Collazo, who I believe is a very dangerous opponent, he’s a tough, he’d be there with the best, and fought the biggest names. I really believe he can steal the show, and that’s all we want to do. Whenever I fight I want to give it 100 percent. I want to give the fans what they want to watch, and I really believe that this fight could be the one that could steal the show on the night.

R. Schaefer
Great. Thank you, thank you, Amir. We are going to open it up now to the media members to ask questions of any of the participants on the call.

Q
Amir, could you talk a little bit about the things that Virgil Hunter, specifically, has done to make you a better fighter?

A. Khan
Yeah, we’re working on a lot, being more patient and picking the right shots at the right time. I’ve always been an exciting fighter, and I think that’s always going to be there, you know, it’s in my blood. But we’re just working on new things, you know, making sure that-we got back to this year for the stance, we don’t have the defense low, we have a high defense. We’ve had great sparring partners helping us, you know, in the past few months, just to kind of keep me sharp.

Overall we work on everything, really. We’re working on the mistakes I used to make, I used to take silly shots, I used to jump onto a lot of the shots, which I believe are probably twice as hard as when you do get hit, when you jump into a shot. So, we’ve been working on just being patient, being smart, using the feet and the hands at the right time, using the defense and the offense at the right time, and he’s changing me up. You know, he’s making me understand the sport of boxing.

Q
Are you finally past the fact that Floyd did not agree to fight you? I know that you were very upset at the time.

A. Khan
It is upsetting. Yeah, I was upset, but look, I’ve got someone else in front of me now, Luis Collazo, who is going to be giving 100percent in there. So, all of my focus is on that fight now. Whatever happened in the past I just let it go, and, you know, I’m just focusing on this next fight now.

Q
Stephen, does Floyd plan to be at the Final Four to promote the fight, like he did last year?

S. Espinoza
I haven’t, I haven’t spoken to him about that. That was sort of a spur of the moment decision. So, as usual you can’t really predict what Floyd will do, he sort of may decide the night before that he’s jumping on a jet and going to the game. We, we do have to plan when he gets an idea like that, and we scramble and, and cover for it. So we’re prepared for the eventuality. You know, but regardless if he attends the, the finals or not, CBS will be fully supporting this through a, through a range of different promotional vehicles.

Q
Amir, so you’re a really big guy, even though this is your first time at 147. Can you talk about the benefits of not having to lose weight, and to be able to train at a higher weight before this fight, in terms of the energy you expect to have on fight night?

A. Khan
I mean, it’s not like, you know, a couple of years ago when I did kind of make my mind up to go up a weight. I used to have trouble making the 14-pound division. It was after the Judah fight, and it was never easy to make 140, you know, I was big, I’ve got a big body frame and I’m a tall fighter. So, it was always hard to get the 140 division, but, you know what, I still made it. I mean, even if I have to make 140 now, I’ll still kill myself and make the weight.

But it’s not the right way of doing it. You know, this is a tough sport when you go in the ring with the likes of these tough guys like Collazo, and the fighters that you’re going to be facing, you have to be 100 percent ready. So I really believe I’ll be a better fighter at 147, I’ll be stronger, and I’ll keep a lot of my energy and strength and power in the shots. I see a huge in difference in my fighting style and also when I spar. I mean, even though we wear head guards and, you know we wear bigger gloves, when we spar, I feel so much stronger. I spar with guys who are a lot heavier than me, and this is at my natural weight, and I do really well.

So when you cut down and you kill yourself and make your weight, and you cut down to about 140 pound division, it used to kind of make me really weak, I couldn’t hold energy, the power wasn’t there, and I used to walk into the fight literally, very weak. You can always tell how your body is, how is, how your body’s feeling.

I’m a big 140-pound fighter. I was, even at 147 pounds, I’m not going to be a small 147 fighter. So, I think this weight is going to be perfect for me. I’m going to be exactly where I need to be, I’m going to be nice and strong, and, you know, I’m going to be nice and fresh. You’ll definitely see a different Amir Khan coming into this fight because I’ve had a lot of time to work on things, and work on new strategies, and also work with my trainers, Virgil Hunter and also my strength conditioner, Tony Brady. So, I know I’m going to be ready in this division, and I can’t wait to step in the ring.

Q
Style-wise, who compares most favorably to Collazo? I know you fought two southpaws back-to-back in McCloskey and Judah. Would they rank as being favorable, in terms of his style and his ability to, to box?

A. Khan
No, Collazo’s a one-of-a-kind fighter. You know, he has his own style, I respect the way he fights and he always causes big problems to his opponents, and he does really well in the ring. I’m not going to compare him to any opponent I’ve faced before. I’ve not faced a Collazo before, so I need to work on a new strategy and to work on a new game plan, and my trainer Virgil is helping me to overcome that.

Q
Do you expect to box more, and be more patient in this fight, given that you’re facing a bigger guy?

A. Khan
We’re going to see how the fight turns out, really, and we’re going to see what goes down while we’re in the ring. I think everybody in the world knows we can box and we can fight. So, we’ll just see how it all goes.

Q
Luis, who would you compare Khan to on your record?

L. Collazo
He’s got great speed; but I think he might be a little bit slower than Andre Berto was. And that was a big fight for me. Come fight night we’ll definitely see if his speed is going to be a factor or not.

Q
My last question for you, he talked about-and I talked to Virgil about this, about him jumping into shots and being available for some of those shots like the one that Danny Garcia caught him with, and obviously earlier in his career against Breidis Prescott. Do you see him being able to change that in the last couple fights that you’ve seen? Or do you expect this, and maybe take advantage of that kind of opportunity again?

L. Collazo
Oh man, to be honest, I don’t know. You know, he’s his own fighter, and if he takes me lightly, more power to him. But come fight night I’m just going to try to capitalize on all his mistakes. That’s, my main thing, and I’m just working my butt off. I’m working hard to give all fans what they want, a great and exciting show.

Q
Can you just explain that a little more, about how your mindset has changed over the period where you felt you were going to be fighting Floyd Mayweather, and you didn’t in the end, and what you’ve gone through, and how it’s hardened you?

A. Khan
Okay, it has been tough, mentally. Then just-we kind of turned that around, and we worked it towards our advantage by working in the gym, spending time with Virgil and Tony and coming to America early, having mini camps in between. Because in the last 12 months I’ve gotten more fit. I’ve been spending a lot of time in the gym, I’ve been sparring, I’ve been hitting the mitts. I’ve been working on different techniques and stuff, and I think sometimes it’s good, it really worked for me, not having an opponent in the back of my mind who I’m going to be fighting. At least that way, then, I’m not focusing on that one style; I can box in different styles and different ways of improving my style.

So, I didn’t have that pressure. But, overall there was a disappointment but like I said earlier, that was a mental thing, I got over that. You know, I’m a mentally strong fighter, I’ve proven that numerous times, I will come back from a defeat, which not many fighters would come back from.

Physically I think I’m a better fighter, and like I said, moving up to the next weight category is only going to make me a better fighter. We don’t want to go into and take easy fights, I mean we want to fight the best out there, and it shows that Luis Collazo is one of the best out there by knocking out Victor Ortiz in his last fight, and proving himself. I think he’s earned his, he’s earned a big fight, and so that’s the reason that we want to fight, him, because we really believe that he is one of the dangerous guys at 147, and that’s a fight that I need, and to get me up there, and get me back in the ring again.

Q
When you go in against Luis Collazo, is it not just the victory that’s important, but the manner of the way you fight, your performance that you put on, on the night?

A. Khan
Yeah, I mean it’s all about performing in a good fashion, really, putting a great fight on, and you know putting a great performance on and a great fight for the fans. You always have good days and bad days in office, and I really believe that you know I needed a nice break after the Diaz fight. I hadn’t had a long break for such a long time.

So, being a young fighter I was always active. I think that break’s done me a world of good, and also killing myself making the 140 pound division, I won’t be doing that anymore. So, I’ll be going into the fight really healthy and very happy.

Q
Luis, you mentioned that you want to capitalize on Amir’s mistakes. Do you believe he’s a vulnerable fighter in defense?

L. Collazo
Sometimes all fighters are. We all make mistakes, so absolutely. We’re not perfect, but that’s why different styles make beautiful fights and I’m just going to try to capitalize to the best of my ability.

Q
Do you take something from that fight against Ricky Hatton? Do you use those other fights in your advantage, when you give everything against Khan?

L. Collazo
Absolutely, I think everybody learns from their mistakes. You just don’t want to make them again. Before I was on my time, now, I’m on God’s time. Like you said, May of 2006 I fought Hatton, and now it’s May 2014 and I’m fighting Khan. It’s amazing.

Q
When Floyd made the decision finally to fight Marcos Maidana were there any back-and-forths with yourselves and Floyd Mayweather, and was it a very difficult decision for him in the end? Did he come very close to choosing Amir rather than Marcos? Can you kind of just spell out the last few days of how it went down?

S. Espinoza
It was a tough decision, and I can see why because you know, from my perspective, and from the Mayweather team’s perspective, both Amir and Maidana have a lot of advantage, a lot of benefits in the matchup. You know, Floyd was-from the network perspective, both would make very interesting fights, very competitive fights from what we believe. From the network perspective, both would be approved.

So, it was ultimately, you know, up to the Mayweather side to choose between the two, and you know he did ruminate on it for, for a while, and it was a tough decision, I’ve heard him say that. But, you know, he obviously went with Maidana, while acknowledging that Amir has a lot to offer, and could be a potential opponent in the near future as well.

Q
My question for you Luis is, when you beat Victor Ortiz, and now you wind up with this fight with Khan on this big card, was this what you had in mind to gain from a victory against Ortiz?

L. Collazo
Absolutely. Khan is a great fighter, he’s been on top of the game quite some time now, and to be able to get this fight, it’s great. This is just getting me closer to where I really want to be, at the top of the welterweight division.

Q
I know you have to fight each other, but do you also view this essentially as your audition to fight Floyd in the fall? Luis?

L. Collazo
Well, for me, to be honest, like I said before, Victor was doing the same thing. Right now my main focus is Amir Khan, my radar is on him, and in the future, tomorrow has its own worries. But today I’m just dealing with today’s worries, today’s reality and with this fight here. This is all I’m focused on.

Q
Of course, you called out Floyd, too, like anybody else would in that weight class. So it’s got to be in the back of your mind a little bit, no?

L. Collazo
Oh, absolutely, but I’m not thinking about it. I don’t go to sleep thinking about, oh, I might get the Floyd fight. Of course not, my main focus is Khan, and May 3is going to be the night.

Q
Do you see this as a chance to put yourself in position to get that fight in the fall that you didn’t get for May?

A. Khan
Well, yeah, first of all, I mean, the whole focus is going to be on Luis Collazo, and I’m not really going to get into all that, the hype about it happening in the future. I mean, if it happens, it happens. I’m just going to be focused on one thing, and what I need to do is keep winning. I know will be in Floyd’s eye, even though it didn’t happen last time, you know, it’s not going to , it’s not going to affect me any, in anyway. I’m just going to be focused for my next fight, really. I know I’m up against a tough guy.

I really believe that this fight can steal the show on the night, because you’ve got two young, hungry fighters, you know, who, who want to prove it, prove themselves.

Q
Do you think that the layoff will hurt you at all? Is there a chance that maybe you’ve been over-trained?

A. Khan
I mean, time will tell. We’re just going to see what happens. I really believe I’ll be in a great state, I’ll be in a great position, and I’ll be perfect. So, I don’t really see any problems, I’m just going to be nice and fit and strong for the fight, you know, we’ll be ready no matter what.

Q
Do you have regrets for not fighting over the last year, for maybe not taking that fight that was on the table against Alexander? Is there a regret, or are you good with the decision?

A. Khan
Look, God does things for a reason, and I really believe that I needed a long break off, and taking that time off sometimes makes you metaphysically and mentally a better fighter. I expect time will tell; we’ll see how much I’ve become a better fighter on the night of the fight. It’s not really affected me. Whatever happens, and whatever happened in the past has happened, and I’m just going to be focusing on the next fight, really, and I’m not going to let anything get in between that.

Q
Luis, do you think you’re going to have a fair shot to win this fight, and they didn’t ask you to take this fight in order to bring up Khan for future fights?

L. Collazo
It’s okay, you know, I’ve been the underdog all my life, all my fights I was the one trying, the next fighter to step up, and I’m more than welcome, you know. He’s coming to the welterweight division, I’m more than happy to welcome him to that weight.

Q
I know that there was some talk about this fight with Khan. Were you surprised that the agreement came relatively quickly for you?

L. Collazo
Well, this is what makes this sport so amazing. Anything can happen, and I’m just humbled by the opportunity and I’m very grateful.

Q
How do you think you will react rust-wise, since it’s been so long since you’ve been in the ring?

A. Khan
We’ve had a lot of the hard sparring, we’ve had a lot of hard work we’ve been doing in the gym behind closed doors. So, yeah, I really believe I’ll be okay. But like I said, time will tell. We know we’re going to be ready, and I’m not going to have no excuses. I could have just stopped, and not do anything, just go take a holidays or just relax, but I didn’t. I was working on becoming a better fighter. So, I think I’m in a better position than I’ve ever been in.

Q
Were you a little surprised by the power that he showed against Victor Ortiz, as Victor is known to have a pretty solid chin.

A. Khan
Yeah, I mean, look, we all know Collazo’s a strong fighter, he’s a big fighter. He hits hard and when he hit Victor with that hook, I mean it was a great hook, and I know he was going to give up. I mean Victor you know, really gets caught with a good shot. He doesn’t really want to sometimes exchange or get involved. He normally just takes a knee and stays down, and that’s what Collazo did. I mean Collazo caught him with a good clean shot, and Victor couldn’t continue.

So, it shows that he’s got power, he’s got speed, he’s got great movement. This is going to be a good fight, it’s going to be a tough fight. We’re going to be up against a tough Collazo, even the fights he’s lost, Collazo’s been very, very close. So, I mean, I’m excited. You know, it’s going to be a tough fight for me but it’s going to be a good fight for us.

Q
It’s been I guess 12 years since you fought last in Las Vegas, and you fought against Edwin Catiani, and the referee at that time was Jay Nady, and he stopped that fight, I think, very quickly. And I was wondering if you have any apprehensions about returning to Las Vegas, and what you would say if they select Jay Nady as the referee?

L. Collazo
I’m excited, to be honest with you. You know, that wasn’t my last fight in Vegas, but I just hope Jay Nady’s not the ref. But I’ll be honest, I learned from that, you’ve got to go in there to take care of business, and you’ve got to be careful with how you’re taking shots. If you know you’re taking shots and the refs think you’re hurt, keep it moving, don’t stay there and keep getting those shots, and just be smart. I learned a lot from my previous fights and I’m just grateful for all the experiences that I, that I have.

Q
Can you just tell us a little bit how a guy from Brooklyn, New York winds up training at Fort Jackson down in South Carolina, and kind of how that all came to be?

L. Collazo
I’ve been coming up here since-wow, maybe 2004? You know, my camp coordinator, Andrew Stokes is up here and he lives here. He’s an ex-military guy, and we’ve got access to the biggest army base in the United States. The running, the atmosphere, it just an amazing place to get ready for a fight.

Q
Do you guys bring in sparring partners? Or who, who are you sparring with?

L. Collazo
Absolutely, we bring in sparring partners everywhere we go, even if it would be back home in Brooklyn. We bring guys out that could be kind of the opponent’s style.

Q
Is this the first time you really have sort of felt you’ve had two fights back to back that can get you back to where you want to be?

L. Collazo
Everything happens for a reason, like I said before. I was, back then, I was on my time, I thought I was on top of the world. But, hey, God said it wasn’t my time, and now I’m on His time. May 2006, I fought Ricky, and now in 2014 I’m fighting Amir Khan.

So, it just shows you the growth, and when you have faith, how your life gets transformed. Last year I was nowhere; I didn’t even know where my career was heading. And look a year later; since I’ve been following Christ, I’m here. I’m just, I feel blessed, and I’m very excited for, for May 3.

Q
Do, do you think you’re a much better fighter than in those days, with the experience you’ve had since?

L. Collazo
Absolutely. I’m growing, I’m still learning in boxing. If you think you know everything, you’re wrong. I actually learned from a little kid you know? I feel like I’m a better fighter and come May 3 I’ll show it.
Q
What are the odds from your opinion when you were being linked with the Mayweather fight to actually be fighting on the undercard of one of these shows?

A. Khan
I never thought I’d be an undercard. It was a bit of a surprise when they said, I’d be on the undercard. I thought it would be a good idea, because for the millions of the people that would be tuned in to watch the fight-as we all know, Floyd does get a huge crowd of people, plus he gets a lot of viewing figures-I think it would be good to showcase my skills. But yeah, it was a bit of a surprise. But like, we’re here now, so I’m going to grab it with both hands.

Q
What have you learned from those fights against top competition, going into this fight with Amir?

L. Collazo
From the Ricky fight I learned that anything could happen. And from the Victor Ortiz fight, I learned don’t leave it to the judges. You know I learned a lot and I’m just very excited and humbled by this opportunity. And come May 3 I’m just going to keep giving the boxing fans what they want, some more excitement.

Q
Do you think you need more than a win on May 3 to get the Mayweather fight?

A. Khan
In the last fight we didn’t do that well and I did have a lot of things that affected that fight, where like the weight making I think was a huge big problem in that fight, but now I’m going to be going into this fight very happy, and I’ll be fighting at my natural weight, which is probably 147 there for me.

But, it’s all about putting a great performance on, putting a great fight on, and giving the crowd what they want. The fans want to see a good fight, the fans want to see an exciting fight, and I think us two, the two styles we have will make this fight very exciting, and very good to watch.

Q
Do you think that since you work with Andre Berto, have you guys collaborated and talked about how to fight Collazo?

A. Khan
I was working with Berto a couple of months back when I came from the U.K., that’s before the fight with Collazo was announced. So we’ve not spoken about anything, we’ve not seen each other since the announcement.

So, I know that Collazo fought him [Berto] and it was a close fight and stuff, but at the end of the day it’s me who’s going to be going in the ring with Collazo, and I don’t think I need to ask anyone what it’s going to be like. I do my own homework and I have my own style.
Q
How does it feel being back on the big stage after all of these years, and can you tell me what that time away was like? And how have you become a better boxer?

L. Collazo
To be honest, not being offered big fights was bringing me down. I was literally depressed. But times change. Last year was a tough one, but 2014 is turning out to be a blessed year. When you leave it in God’s hands, anything is possible. He can resurrect you from the worst position.

I’m a getting a little emotional. But I’m just grateful for this opportunity, and to be able to be back on top of the boxing world, it’s just amazing to me, just humbling to me, and I’m just very grateful for this opportunity.

Q
Do you feel that Amir Khan is overlooking you at all?

L. Collazo
Yes, he is. At least hat’s what I’m hearing. On May 3, I’m going across the ring once that bell rings, you know, and he’s just got to get ready. I know I’m getting ready, and I hope he’s getting ready the same way, because we’ve got to give the boxing fans what they want, some excitement.

R. Schaefer
Okay, thank you to all the media members. Thank you to Luis and to Amir, I really can’t wait for this fight. I think it’s a terrific matchup, it’s a 50/50 fight, and can’t wait to see both of you soon. I wish you all the best in training camp, and before you know it, it’s going to be May 3, and “THE MOMENT” will be upon us where we are going to see one of the best cards we have ever put together.

UNDEFEATED WORLD WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPION TIMOTHY BRADLEY, Trainer JOEL DIAZ and Hall of Fame Promoter BOB ARUM Conference Call Transcript

Pacquiao_Bradley comm shoot_140203_003a
BOB ARUM: Thanks, everyone for getting on the call and before we start the call we are going to give everyone a real treat. We are going to play the song called “Champion,” performed by the famous Fashawn. He will sing that song leading Tim Bradley out of the dressing room April 12, on the night of the big fight. So without further adieu, let’s play the new his song, for the first time anywhere… (listen to :20 of the Tim Bradley’s walk-out music. Entire recording is attached)

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: Training camp is going great. Are you guys ready for this?! April 12 is going to be a great night for everyone involved on HBO Pay-Per-View. It’s the second time around. Tim Bradley versus Manny Pacquiao or Pacquiao versus Bradley – however way you guys have got it. I have had a sensational training camp so far and i am going to finish up pretty soon and the fight is on, man, I can’t wait.

JOEL DIAZ: Nothing different (for this fight). The only difference is, you know, we are going to ruin the party because all the odds are against us. Tim Bradley has that in mind. But we don’t really feel that is import and, I’ll be honest with you, everyone is going to WIld Card to see how Manny Pacquiao has been training — great — and “he is in great shape and great preparation,” but nobody comes around to Tim Bradley’s gym to see how he is doing. But in a way I like that because curiosity sometimes puts a little fear. Because nobody knows how Tim Bradley is training. He is very ready to come to Vegas and ruin the party for a lot of people. But this it is going to be very decisive and there will be no doubt. This preparation is going to be not much different but now we have unfinished business.

Bob, you have promoted your share of rematches – anything special about this one?

BOB ARUM: Of course it is special, because the first fight ended in a decision for Timothy Bradley and a lot of people thought that the decision could have gone the other way and that could be debated endlessly so the rematch gives a definitive answer to who is the better fighter.

Do you still feel you have something to prove even after your two big wins against Provodnikov and Marquez?

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: Absolutely, I have a lot to prove in this fight, and number one is that the first fight was not a fluke. There were a lot of things that happened in the first fight that weren’t right. This time I will be 100% ready. I have gained a lot of experience from my last two fights on HBO and HBO Pay-Per-View — one in particular, the one against Marquez, who is a great champion and a great fighter, legendary. And the fight against Provodnikov, the Fight of the Year. So I am a different fighter now. A different beast – a different animal this time around and I am going to prove to the fans and everybody watching. I got the win but it felt like I lost because I didn’t get any credit from the fans and it’s important to get the credit from the fans. I feel I need to showcase myself and win by a large margin.

When things happened in the first fight? What do you mean?

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: I am talking about my feet. That’s all I am talking about.

Even after your two big wins, do people come up to you and talk about the Pacquiao decision?

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: Not at all – that has all died down now. They know the fight is coming quickly and they can’t wait for this fight. It is going to be sensational and it’s going to be one of the best fights this year. I am telling you man, both of us have a lot to prove in this fight, man. The reason why Pacquiao really needs to win this fight – because if he loses this fight, think about it – his career might be over. I really need to win this fight because of the controversy of the first fight. You know “I beat him, I beat him, I beat him,” but this time I need to beat him more decisively because of the fans so they can give me the credit for it.

Is this going to be the Bradley we saw against Provodnikov where you just went to battle or are we going to see the Bradley who fought Marquez, who won a good fight but boxing?

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: Everybody is going to have to tune in to see which Timothy Bradley is going to show up. I am not going to give away my game plan right now. Everyone knows what Manny Pacquiao is going to do. He is going to try to bring the fight to me and I am just going to show everyone it is not going to work.

Do you feel the rematch is taking place at the right time and not immediately and being forced on the people?

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: I think that everybody thinks I am a quality fighter right now and my status is completely different than it was in the first fight. I wasn’t really known in the first fight – everyone was like who is this guy? Now having won the 2013 Fight of the Year and beating Marquez, who knocked out Pacquiao in an unbelievable 2013 – I think the fight is even bigger right now than it was in the first fight.

BOB ARUM: Because of the controversy in the first fight, if we had done an immediate rematch I think most of the time being spent by the media would have been on ‘was the first fight fixed?’ therefore getting a second fight and now you don’t hear any of that because obviously the fighters went on to do their thing against other opponents. Now we have a great fight and there is no adverse commentary as to any kind of manipulation in the first fight.

Do you have to guard against being reckless knowing you feel a need to prove something?

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: The one thing I have learned is to not be reckless and not get away from the game plan and listen to my corner, so that won’t happen in this one. That fact, of me fighting hard and with my determination and my will, and because I want to win this fight with no questions. We have a game plan and I am going to go out there and execute my game plan and that’s that. When I fight in the trenches or a war, or I go outbox Manny Pacquiao – I will win no matter what.

Can you talk about making sure Tim stays on point?

JOEL DIAZ: It took a couple of fights to learn that every fight is an experience. Looking at his previous fight he knows that when he goes on his own and does what he feels like he gets in trouble. When he follows the game plan and listens to the instructions in the corner he is always in good shape. So with that being said, after the Provodnikov fight, he learned there are ways you can approach your opponent but at some point you have to be smart. On that day it was more of a mad Tim Bradley – he had a lot of anger in him because of the way the media and the fans approached him (regarding the Pacquiao fight). That was an experience and I don’t think that will happen again. In this fight, regarding the controversy, I know that Tim has all of the weapons packed up and ready to go for the fight. I know if Tim needs to go inside and brawl he is going to do it. If he needs to outbox Pacquiao he is going to do it. We are ready for everything – we are leaving nothing behind. I am going to be watching very carefully in the corner and if he listens to my instructions, he will be fine. There are going to be times when he is going to be on the outside and times when he will be on the inside and that all depends on Manny and what he’s got and we make adjustments. If Manny’s going to bring it we are going to be ready. If he’s going to hold back and box, Tim’s going to be ready. There is nothing we are going to be surprised about – we are going to have everything ready.

Do you think the knockout to Marquez affected him?

JOEL DIAZ: Every fight will leave a mark on your career. When Marquez knocked him out that really left a mark on his career. We saw a lot of differences in Manny Pacquiao. Manny Pacquiao is a fighter that brings it. He comes to destroy the opponent. He had an opponent in front of him that he could hit, even with his eyes closed and couldn’t finish him. According to him, he was compassionate and he didn’t want to finish him and that was very surprising. I know if somebody comes and kicks me in the chest I know that Timothy is going to make the guy pay for it, you know? But he became very compassionate so we’ll see what he does on that night with Tim Bradley.

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: I have seen it way before that. The first fight we had he said he was compassionate. He carried me through the fight and he never really trained that hard and made-up every excuse in the book. Pacquiao is going to be vicious. I think I pissed him off. I got under his skin by saying that he lost it. He’s been training hard and I heard throughout the grapevine he has been looking sharp – and that’s his job, he needs to be at his very best. And I have been working hard too, so we can put on a show for the fans and that’s what it’s all about.

What did you learn about Manny in the first fight?

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: I was able to make adjustments and I was able to move and Manny had problems with me when I was moving. He is expecting me to move around this fight and he is getting ready for it. He is going to be in tune for every movement I do. But they also say he is ready for the war too, so we have to wait and see. There has been a lot of talking man. I just can’t wait to get into the ring and showcase my talent and to put on a great show for all of the fans watching around the world on HBO Pay-Per-View.

Can you talk about the Nevada testing – your first time doing it?

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: Just to clear things up – Manny didn’t care what testing we were doing. He was willing to do VADA or WADA so there was no argument as far as the testing goes. I just chose to do the VADA testing to stick by what I have tried to set out to do and that’s to clean up the sport and making sure that a lot of these guys are getting tested. The NSAC decided they didn’t want to do VADA representing us, they wanted to do the same that we did in the Marquez fight – WADA which was very successful in that fight so they wanted to stick with it and not mess around with VADA. I am doing double testing just to prove to everybody that I am a clean fighter and am willing to do whatever with hard work and dedication, which is how I got to this position.

Many boxing experts have been picking you to win this fight – why do you think that is?

JOEL DIAZ: I really don’t know man. I just think from my experience I think that a lot of the writers and the boxing people that know, they see Manny Pacquiao at his age – everybody sees that Manny Pacquiao is at the end of his career. He has fought the best fighters out there. Now they see that he is diminished. And after the knockout in his last fight with Marquez they saw a downfall in him and after Bradley went to war with Provodnikov – a heavy hitter, by far the heaviest hitter he as ever fought and went into the fight and beat Ruslan and came back and beat Juan Manuel Marquez at his own craft. I think they are putting the numbers together. Bradley has gained a lot of confidence, he is in the prime of his game right now – so they see TIm Bradley winning.

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: He said pretty much everything I thought. I think everybody has seen me grow in the last two years and they see how confident I am and my ability. I fought two different styles and I was able to come out victorious so a lot of people are definitely getting behind me right now and they feel that Pacquiao is declining and this is my time.

Do you feel you are the most disrespected undefeated champion in the sport today?

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: No, absolutely not. I don’t feel I am disrespected. I honestly feel that the boxing world knows who I am. The boxing fans know who I am and they respect me. I don’t feel disrespected at all to be honest.

Do you feel you have gotten credit?

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: Maybe before because it’s all about – show them my craft and just fighting – that’s what it’s all about. Fighting the best fighters out there and beating them. That’s it. I came up the hard way. I came up through the back door. Now I have had a Fight of the Year and two incredible wins. I think now fans are beginning to gravitate towards me and before they didn’t know me. And after the controversy, they really hated me like I had anything to do with it. I didn’t have anything to do with anything. I’m not a judge – I just went in there and did my job. At the end of the day all I’ve got to do is continue to win and they have no choice.

How are you health wise? Are you 100%

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: There is nothing to be concerned about regarding my health right now. I am 110% right now. There is not a fighter that goes into the ring that is not 110%. I am mentally and physically dialed in for the fight on April 12.

By mentioning that Manny has lost his fire – do you feel you are getting into his head?

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: Well, when was the last time you saw him knock somebody out? It’s been a long time. Then he had a guy sitting in front of him, he was a tough guy — Brandon Rios — I have a lot of respect for — but he was right there in front of him and he couldn’t get rid of him. He is supposed to be one of the vicious punchers in the game. I have never seen Manny Pacquiao take a step back before – I think it was the last round of the Rios fight and he had RIos trapped in the corner and you saw Manny take his foot off the gas pedal and it was unbelievable to me. In our fight, I had two wounded feet and he couldn’t take me out. What makes you think he can take me out with two good feet? I had two wounded feet and that’s when I started noticing – he has the ability, man – now don’t get it twisted as me saying he doesn’t have the fire or the passion – Manny Pacquiao used to come in blazing and knock guys out, just knock them out and he didn’t mess around. Now it looks like he is more compassionate towards his opponents and that’s not good for boxing.

How much does being undefeated mean to you?

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: Being unbeaten is a great accomplishment, but it’s not everything in boxing, honestly. I feel that fighting the best fights and going the fans what they want is the best thing for you and your career. A lot of guys that are legendary have losses on their records but they fought the best fighters in the world and that’s what is important to me – I want to be one of the best fighters in the world. I want to fight the best out there because I want to be the No. 1 fighter in the world – and that’s what is important to me. Maintaining my health is great but every dog has his day. This next fight – I may lose this Manny Pacquiao fight, but you never know. Things happen in the ring when you least expect it. It only takes one punch to end the night and we know that. At the end of the day, my 0 doesn’t really mean that much to me. It’s just there. I have beaten everyone they have put in front of me, that’s all it means but I just want to fight the best.

Since you say that, how badly do you want to fight Mayweather?

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: It’s not how badly I want to fight Mayweather. Mayweather already knows I will fight him any day and any place. It’s how bad Mayweather wants to fight me. Whether or not I fight him my career is going to go on and my legacy is going to keep on building. Whether he is there or not, I am going to keep on winning against the best opponents out there.

Are you worried your legacy will say you didn’t fight the No. 1 guy?

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: At the end of the day, Mayweather is his own boss and if he wants to see me, he can come see me. I’ve got people that work for me and are building me – my wife who is also my manager, Todd duBoef, Top Rank, HBO and if Mayweather wants to come see me… He’s his own boss and he says that over and over and over. If he wants the fight to happen then so be it. I will never shy away from the best and Mayweather is the best right now. At the end of the day everyone is going to want to see the fight, but the business side of boxing is totally different and it’s not our fault, it’s just the way it is.

Have you had any concussion symptoms lately?

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: No, I didn’t feel anything at all. I have had help regarding that and I am 100%. You saw the Marquez fight – there was no problem. I felt like I was at my best that night. No problems, no symptoms, I’m good, 100%.

You weren’t 100% against Manny, and mentally not 100% against Provodnikov, yet won both fights…

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: That just says that I am one tough cookie. Even on my worst day I am hard to beat. So when I am 100%, it’s going to be harder to beat me. I am so mentally tough no one can break me. I have said it many times and said it to his face – if he does not knock me out he is not going to win.

What was your best night? When everything went right against a quality opponent?

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: The Marquez fight because Marquez is one of the best counter-punchers in the game and I outfought this guy and out-counter-punched him. And Marquez has been in there against all the best fighters in the world. Everybody – Mayweather included. Manny hasn’t been in there with Mayweather – Marquez has. That was a sensational boxing lesson I put on Marquez that night and it was one of the best moments I have had in my career. I had fun in there. I enjoyed how I was working and I enjoyed the fight and what I did in the ring.

Do you feel you can win a clear-cut decision against Manny Pacquiao?

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: Yeah. At the end of the day all I can do is my job and that’s it. I can’t worry about judges – can’t be worried about what it this and what is that. That’s not my job to worry about any of that. The fans are going to scream out if something is not right. The fans are going to tell everybody what’s not right. Isn’t that what happened in my fight, the controversy? Everyone is like you didn’t win. I won the fight. I wasn’t the one judging the fight. Everyone said I didn’t win the fight. I didn’t win. I didn’t get any credit. I lost the credit form the fans. I lost the credit from the world. I lost the credit from boxing by beating this guy. And I am going to beat him decisively this time. No questions asked. I want it to be to a point where nobody can say ‘who you got?’ No I want everyone to be able to say “Bradley won the fight.’ That’s it. ‘Bradley clearly, handily, won the fight.’

JOEL DIAZ: Well, at the end of the night, if Timothy wins the fight clearly, and they give it to Manny, the world will know. Winning the fight decisively and giving the world what they want to see. If the fight is close and it goes the distance, of course, Manny Pacquiao is a favorite in every angle and of course we expect that. That’s why we are working extremely hard to not let that happen. We want to make this fight decisive and we want to beat Manny Pacquiao decisively. Walking out of that ring that night and if Tim Bradley beats Manny Pacquiao and the world sees that and we walk out of there with a defeat at least people can see exactly what happened. We take that into consideration; going into another close decision won’t be in our favor. They have big plans with Manny Pacquiao and boxing is not only a sport it is a business. But they are trying to count Tim Bradley out and they can’t. I am telling the whole world right now – TIm Bradley is going to come April 12 and he is going to ruin a lot of peoples’ party by beating Manny Pacquiao again.

Do you feel the two fights you’ve had since Pacquiao have helped you?

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: I thought that fight [against Provodnikov] was just pure heart. I was in a bad place mentally for that fight. That’s the reason why I fought the way I fought that night with the controversy I went through and that was my first fight back. I felt like I had a lot to prove to the fans and to myself and prove to the world that I am a true champion that belongs at the top of boxing and that’s the reason why I fought that way. I wanted to showcase what I was made of. I learned a lot from that fight going into the Marquez fight. They offered me the Manny fight but, after that crazy fight with Provodnikov, there was a light shining on my career and I wasn’t ready to visit that dark light just yet. Give the guy that just knocked him out. Everyone thought I was crazy. They said, ‘dude, are you insane?’ I talked to Todd and he said, ‘I’ll make it happen.’ He made it happen and I went back to the drawing board and basically working on my craft and listening to my corner and staying disciplined. It worked out well. I came in and beat Marquez and now I know what I am capable of doing. If I need to dig down deep I know I have it in there. If I need to outbox the guy I know I have it in there. There is nothing I cannot do in the ring. I have the whole package. The only thing I may lack is, and I have fought a lot of great fighters, is power.

After the Provodnikov fight everyone thought you were damaged goods…

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: That’s what they thought. I am not damaged goods. I am still one of the top fighters in the game. I am not damaged goods whatsoever. It’s how you bounce back that makes you a champion. I went and got some help and now I am 110%.

After beating Marquez, you claimed the No. 3 spot of pound-for-pound…

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: That was spontaneous because I believe at that time they had Marquez and No. 3 behind Andre Ward and Mayweather. I just beat him. And after that Ruslan Provodnikov picked up the belt and I beat that guy and I told everyone he would be world champion. So I told everyone without question I am No. 3 because I just beat the No. 3 fighter in the game.

Do you feel disrespected being billed as the No. 2 guy on the card?

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: Listen, boxing is not only a sport it is a business as well. All parties need to understand that. It could have been Bradley-Pacquiao, but my team and I, we worked together to put on the best possible show to make sure that everybody included – my team, Top Rank, HBO – is happy with the results at the end of the day.. They came to me to ask me and I said I don’t have problem with it. I know Pacquiao is a big name and everybody knows it so Pacquiao-Bradley is OK. And I just basically negotiated everything else that I wanted to be treated like a champion. I want to walk out second. I want to be announced second. I want to pick my corner. It is all part of negotiations, that’s what it’s about and I have no problem with it. I know Sergio Martinez has a problem with it but Cotto is the name. Just like Floyd Mayweather-Canelo – Canelo was the champion but who is the bigger name?

How has your sparring gotten better over the years since Joel Diaz has gotten more notoriety?

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: The more guys the better. The more the merrier. It’s not only great for me but everybody in the gym is working together to accomplish the same thing – becoming a world champion. We all feed off each other which is fantastic. Sparring is always fantastic and we always have 3 or 4 guys that come down and work and help and guys that come from out of town that help us work as well. We get ready for every aspect of the ring and that’s how we do it. It’s fantastic that he has all these young fighters – even the ones he is starting off fresh that just came from the Olympics. He’s going to groom them into champions and it is fantastic to see.

Final Thoughts…

BOB ARUM: That was a great conference call today. I am very excited about the fight – it is going to be a very competitive fight. People are going to get their money’s worth and I think they are also going to be excited to watch this undercard action – we have some really top guys in two title fights. It’s going to be a great night of boxing and I hope to see everyone fight week in Las Vegas leading up to April 12.

JOE DIAZ: We are finishing our preparations and TIm Bradley is ready to go. If the fight was this week he’d be ready to go. He is on weight and he is determined and he has a big smile on his face and we are just waiting for April 12. I hope everyone comes to our workout at Fortune Gym in Los Angeles because no one comes to our gym to see him train, so you can see him over there.

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: I am just excited for this opportunity and I’m very glad that we all came to terms for this. Thanks for everything, Bob. I want to thank HBO Pay-Per-View and I want to thank you guys. I want to thank the MGM Grand for bringing us back. I’m happy to be here and I’m very excited for this event and I am inviting everyone to come out to watch the fight on April 12. It is going to be one fantastic night. This fight is going to be fantastic and I want all the fans to come out and be a part of it.

“COLLISION” WBC WORLD LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP ADONIS STEVENSON VS. ANDRZEJ FONFARA May 24 at the Bell Centre in Montreal

MONTREAL (March 27, 2014)- The 2013 “Fighter of the Year,” according to The Ring Magazine and many other boxing publications, as well as the recipient of the prestigious “KO of the Year” award, Adonis “Superman” Stevenson ( 23-1-0, 20 KOs ) returns to the ring May 24 at Bell Centre in Montreal to defend his World Boxing Council (WBC), The Ring and lineal light heavyweight titles for the third time against challenger Andrzej Fonfara (25-2-0, 15KO ).

Born in Warsaw, Poland and now fighting out of Chicago, Illinois, Fonfara is rated No. 1 by the International Boxing Federation (IBF) and World Boxing Organization (WBO), as well as No. 3 by the WBC.

The world light heavyweight title fight between Stevenson and Fonfara headlines, “COLLISION,” which is presented by Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM), in association with Warriors Boxing, and co-presented of Mise-O-Jeu and Videotron. As previously announced this fascinating boxing event will air live in the USA on Showtime, thanks to Mr. Stephen Espinoza, its Executive Vice President & General Manager, Sports and Event Programming.

“Superman’s 2013 was a year well beyond all predictions, beyond all imagination so tremendous it was,” GYM president Yvon Michel said. “He rose to the ranks of international superstar, considered to be the best light heavyweight on the planet! It is a privilege to see him in action again here in Montreal.”

Stevenson, 36, won his world light heavyweight title via knockout in only 76 seconds of then-undisputed light heavyweight champion, “Bad” Chad Dawson (31-3-0, 17 KOs). In his first title defense on September 28, 2014, the new champion was supposed to face a major test against former world champion Tavoris “Thunder” Cloud (24-1-0, 19 KOs). It was quite different, however, as the powerful left-hander pushed Cloud until he retired at the end of the seventh round, after Stevenson gave him a thorough boxing lesson. Stevenson gave a brilliant demonstration of skills, finesse, speed, defense, and power. Two months later, “Superman” completed his dream year with an unequivocal defeat of the WBC No. 1 mandatory contender from Great Britain, Tony ‘Bomber’ Bellew (20-1-1, 12 KOs), who was unable to finish the sixth round. The tough Englishman later declared that he had never been hit with such powerful shots, even by heavyweights.

During his incredibly amazing run, the powerful southpaw Stevenson has knocked out all 10 of his last 10 opponents: Bellew (TKO6), Cloud ( TKO7 ), Dawson (KO1), Darnell Boone (KO6), Don George (TKO12), Noe Gonzales ( TKO2 ), Jesus Gonzales (KO1), Aaron Pryor Jr. (TKO9 ), Shujaa El Amin TKO1) and Derek Edwards (KO3). In fact, the last time a Stevenson fight went the full distance dates back to 2007.

The 26-year-old Fonfara has had spectacular victories over three former world champions in his last five fights. First, by third-round technical knockout in 2012 against former WBA monarch Byron Mitchell (29-9-1, 22 KOs), followed by a 10-round decision over multiple champion Glen Johnson (51-16-2, 35 KOs), and then last year a ninth-round stoppage of former WBA title-holder Gabriel Campillo (22-5-1, 9 KOs).

Fonfara has won his last 15 fights, 12 by knockout, and he has never been defeated fighting as a light heavyweight. He had discussions to face WBO championSergey Kovalev and he could have fought to become mandatory challenger to IBF champion
Bernard Hopkins. Fonfara preferred to fight Stevenson because he is convinced that he has the right style and resources to overthrow the world champion. According to American journalist Briggs Seekins, “Fonfara has power in both hands and undoubtedly belongs to the elite of the division. It is certainly the most serious test of Stevenson title defense.”

Other fights on the “COLLISION” card will be announced in the coming days but GYM is committed to presenting another memorable event. GYM does confirm that the IBF No. 10, WBO No. 11 and WBC No. 16 middleweight David Lemieux (31-2-0, 29 KOs) will be in the co-feature for the most important fight of his career. WBO No. 2, WBA No. 3 and WBC No. 10 world light heavyweight contender Eleider Alvarez (14-0-0, 8 KOs) will be in action May 24, along with rising light heavyweight star Artur Beterbiev (4-0-0, 4 KOs), IBF No. 7 middleweight Kevin Bizier (24-1-0, 14 KOs), heavyweight prospect Oscar Rivas (13-0-0, 8 KOs ), super middleweight Sébastien Bouchard (8-0-0, 2 KOs), and young welterweight Yves Ulysse Jr. (1-0-0, 1 KOs).

Tickets go on sale this Saturday morning (Mar. 29) at 10:00 a.m. ET, at Bell Centre, online at www.evenko.ca, calling GYM at (514) 383-0666, or Boxing Club Champion (514) 376-0980 Ticket prices range from $50.00 up to $350.00 reserved on the floor.

Chatman: “Brewer needs to get out of the way!”

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (March 27th, 2014) – The typically stoic, all-business Chris Chatman found himself star-struck at Thursday’s pre-fight weigh-in until he stood toe-to-toe with his opponent, Grady Brewer, for the first time.

“I saw that seriousness in his eyes,” Chatman said. “He looked right at me and pretty much said, ‘Motherfucker, I’m not playing.’”

Neither is Chatman (11-3-1, 5 KOs). The 5-foot-8 southpaw from Jersey City, N.J., will face Brewer (30-18, 16 KOs), The Contender Season 2 champion, Friday night in the main event of Classic Entertainment & Sports’ professional boxing event Twin River Casino, arguably the biggest fight of his career.

Having recently signed a promotional agreement with CES, the nomadic Chatman has finally found a home after years of relocating, first from his birthplace of Chicago to California, then to Jersey City, where he now lives and trains. At 29, he’s entering the prime of his career and is looking for the kind of signature win that could put him on the fast track to a world title.

“Tomorrow night, it’s about to go down again,” said Chatman, who last fought at Twin River in July when he beat hometown favorite Thomas Falowo. “I expect to see the same Grady Brewer we’ve grown to know and love through the years.

“That being said, he can expect a meaner, vicious Chris Chatman, because there’s only one thing in my way right now, and that’s him. He needs to get out of the way, or I’ll put him out of the way.”

Chatman will be making his fourth appearance at Twin River, which has become his second home in recent years. In 2009, he lost a close, unanimous decision to former Olympian Demetrius Andrade and then won his next two bouts at the same venue, including last summer’s unanimous decision win over Falowo in Falowo’s first career eight-round bout.

“To be a world champion, that’s the only thing I’m here for,” Chatman said. “Sleep world champion, wake up world champion, eat world champion, take a shit world champion – that’s what I live and breathe for. That’s my goal.

“All pleasantries and jokes aside, it’s going down tomorrow night. I can guarantee that.”

Brewer, 43, is no stranger to New England; the Lawton, Okla., native fought in 2008 on the undercard of the CES and the Tournament of Contenders’ co-promotion at The Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence, beating Season 2 teammate and former light middleweight world champion Cornelius Brundage by split decision.

In 2009, he stopped unbeaten Nigerian prospect Albert Onolunose in the second round of their scheduled 12-round bout and two years later handed world-title challenger Fernando Guerrero – 21-0 at the time – the first loss his career via fourth-round knockout. Brewer has also faced World Boxing Association (WBA) light middleweight champion Erislandy Lara, current World Boxing Organization (WBO) champ Andrade and unbeaten Russian prospect Matt Korobov in his 15-year career.

“It’s been a while since I’ve felt the way I feel right now,” Brewer said. “I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”

Tickets are priced at $41, $76 and $126 (VIP) and can be purchased by calling 401-724-2253/2254, online at www.cesboxing.com or www.ticketmaster.com, or at the Players Club at Twin River.

Friday’s undercard includes the return of unbeaten Providence middleweight KJ Harrison-Lombardi (5-0-1) of Providence, who will put his record on the line in a four-round bout against Jason Bakanowski (0-1) of Worcester, Mass., while Springfield, Mass., welterweight Zack Rasmey (6-0, 3 KOs) takes on veteran Shakha Moore (11-19-3, 2 KOs) of Norwalk, Conn., in a six-rounder.

Coming off a knockout win over veteran Arthur Saribekian in November, Hyannis, Mass., heavyweight Jesse Barboza (7-1-1, 5 KOs) will look to stay on track against East Stroudsburg, Pa., heavyweight Glenn Thomas in a four-round bout.

Chattanooga, Tenn., lightweight prospect Ryan Martin (3-0, 2 KOs) will face Justin Robbins (2-5, 1 KO) of Springfield, Ill., in a four-round bout, and Cranston, R.I., welterweight Nick DeLomba (2-0) will return in a four-round bout against Providence’s Josh Beeman (5-14-3, 2 KOs). All fights and fighters are subject to change.

“I love coming down here, it’s a great place to focus before a big fight,” said Collazo. “The atmosphere in Fort Jackson is great. It’s simply an amazing place to train. The troops inspire me. They are disciplined and loyal, and they push themselves to the limit.
I admire them. I always gain inspiration from being around them.”

Collazo has trained at Fort Jackson for the majority of his fights since 2008, most recently, prior to his Sept. 2013 unanimous decision victory against Alan Sanchez, when he earned the vacant WBA International Welterweight Title. He decided to train locally in Brooklyn for his Jan. 30 fight against Victor Ortiz, but for his upcoming fight against Khan, he’s back to his favorite training spot with two of his trainers – Andrew Stokes and Willy Vargas.

“It’s nice to get away from some of the distractions at home and to just be here staying focused with my team,” said Collazo.

“The first thing about Fort Jackson is the weather is very accommodating,” said Stokes. “The atmosphere is very conducive to the atmosphere that Luis likes to train in. But I think that one of the most important things about setting up camp here is that Luis really enjoys training with the soldiers, and this is the largest army training facility in the U.S.”

“Khan is a good fighter, he’s fought some good guys, but he better be ready for me,” said Collazo. “I’m going to bring something he hasn’t seen before.”

Collazo will return to New York City to complete the last stage of his training with his longtime Head Trainer Nirmal Lorrick. Collazo and Lorrick have been working together since the early 1990’s, for more than 20 years.

New York, NY(3/27/14) – DiBella Entertainment (DBE) has announced the signing of amateur standout Ivan Golub to an exclusive co-promotional agreement with Fight Promotions, Inc. Golub has also competed in the World Series of Boxing, winning all five of his bouts. Living and training in Brooklyn, NY, Golub is now ready to take the professional ranks by storm, debuting in the middleweight division, and is confident DBE can put him on that path.

“I always dreamed of boxing in the US. The US is the Mecca of boxing and if you want to be the best, you have to train and fight here. I am ready to put in all of the hard work and dedication it takes to become the next great middleweight champion of the world, and I know that Lou DiBella (President of DiBella Entertainment) is the man who can get me there,” stated Golub.

“We are happy and very excited to have signed Ivan with Fight Promotions, Inc. Ivan is one of the premier boxers in his country and had an absolutely stellar amateur career. Kovalev-Agnew Press Conference Quotes

Sergey Kovalev
Atlantic City, NJ: Today amidst all the press about a potential fight with Adonis Stevenson, Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (23-0-1, 21 KOs) faced the media and his opponent Cedric “L.O.W.” Agnew (26-0-0, 13 KOs) at Caesars to discuss the fight in front of them Saturday night at the Ballroom at Boardwalk Hall and live on HBO Boxing After Dark.

Main Events’ CEO Kathy Duva started things off reminiscing about her experiences at Boardwalk Hall with the late great Arturo Gatti, “We are very pleased to be back here in Atlantic City, NJ. The last time we were at Boardwalk Hall was seven years ago when Arturo Gatti last fought at Boardwalk Hall against Alfonso Gomez. If these walls could talk… Now we have a fight worthy of the house that Gatti built. Ken Condon is the reason that boxing is in Atlantic City and it is wonderful to be here.”

Ken Condon, entertainment and sports consultant to Caesars AC said, “It is a pleasure to have Kathy and Main Events back in Atlantic City. It brings back a lot of great memories. She continues her commitment to Atlantic City boxing and so does Caesars. We are looking forward to a great weekend in Atlantic City. We are looking forward to welcoming Sergey and Cedric to Atlantic City. We have very few tickets left so I wouldn’t wait until Saturday to try to get them because they will probably be sold out by then. We look forward to creating a great relationship with Sergey Kovalev and HBO going forward.”

Duva also addressed questions about why Kovalev is fighting on HBO. She said, “Sergey Kovalev is fighting on HBO because it is the network of champions. HBO is the network that built each and every legendary fighter in the last 30 years. In the United States during the last 30 years no superstar has been built on any other network. Sergey’s plan is to become a legend. That is why he is fighting on HBO.”

Peter Nelson, director of programming, HBO Sports said, “We are very excited to have this event on HBO. We are always pleased to be back in Atlantic City. Boardwalk Hall is the home of many storied fights and Saturday we plan add another fight to that collection. These are the types of fighters HBO loves. It isn’t easy to find people who will step up and fight Sergey. This is Sergey’s debut on the network in a main event. We believe there is going to be a lot of action which will lead to big things down the road.”

Kathy Duva said it is usually difficult to find opponents for Sergey but it was not difficult with Cedric Agnew. She said, “On Saturday, Sergey will fight an undefeated fighter who asked for this fight. Clearly he has a lot of courage. I have always respected a fighter with that attitude.”

Cedric’s promoter Malcolm Garrett of Garrett Promotions said, “We are ecstatic to be here. This is a fight this kid wanted. This is a fight he plans to win. We are glad that everyone in the media, and hopefully Kovalev, have overlooked him. I know Cedric can’t wait for the fight to begin. Cedric has trained hard and is the hardest working fighter I have ever worked with.”

Cedric “L.O.W.” Agnew said, “Everyone who knows me knows I am very quiet. I would like to thank HBO for this opportunity and my team for helping me prepare for this fight. I am ready to go out there and show the world what I am capable of. And show the naysayers what I am capable of. There are always going to be naysayers out there and people who overlook me. I say nothing to them and I will keep doing what I am doing. Saturday I need to fight smart and always be the smartest fighter in the ring. Sergey is a pretty good fighter. He is a tough guy. He is a world champion. He earned that spot. Come Saturday night I will earn mine.”

Kovalev’s manager Egis Klimas reminisced about the path he took with Sergey to get here, “Sergey and I have been down a very long road and it wasn’t easy. When Sergey came from Russia he didn’t speak a word of English. Our relationship is more than just manager-fighter. He is like my son. I took him all over the country to get him any fight we could. At that time nobody wanted him. Then I brought him to Main Events and they took the opportunity. Since then we have had a good relationship with Main Events. They did a very good job to get us here. This is our first main event on HBO. I wanted to thank Cedric’s team for taking this opportunity. I wanted to thank Sergey who trusted in me for all those years when I told him to be patient and that one day we would get here. Finally we are here with Main Events on HBO in Atlantic City. Saturday night do not reach for the popcorn or go for a beer during this fight because you can miss it.”

Krusher’s trainer, John David Jackson, kept Sergey focused these last few months while he trained for this fight. He said, “I want to thank everyone at Main Events, they are a first class company. It is great to be back here at Caesars. I appreciate all that they are doing for us. This is an intriguing fight. I take my hat off to Cedric for taking the fight because a lot of fighters talk a big game but when it comes down to it they don’t want to fight Sergey. We are not overlooking him at all. He is the present and we are not looking over him. We have to get passed him to get to the next phase in Sergey’s career. Sergey has great boxing skills but we won’t know if he will ever get to use them. Sergey is one of the hardest working guys I have ever worked with. It is a great night of boxing. Expect a great evening of boxing all around.”

Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev said, “I am not a talker but I just want to say stay tuned and don’t miss HBO Saturday night. I will try to make a good fight. Thank you to Cedric Agnew for agreeing to fight with me. Thank you to Kathy Duva and HBO. I don’t have any predictions for this fight. He is an undefeated guy and so am I. He has big motivation. He is on HBO and it is a title fight. I am going to do my job. Short fights are the result of my job and my work in the gym. I am only boxing. I go into the ring to show good boxing. I want to show the people what they want to see in the ring from me.”

When asked about the Adonis Stevenson situation, Sergey laughed and said, “I never go into the ring thinking about someone else. I want to say good luck to Adonis is in his career but someday he will meet my punch. We will talk about it after the fight.”

Finally, Duva discussed the undercard fights, “The undercard is loaded with tremendous fights if you can make it to Boardwalk Hall. We are going to have a group of fighters whose combined records are: 91-11 (64 KOs) vs. 76-5 (42 KOs). I would also like to thank our sponsors Caesars AC, Do AC and Khortitsia Vodka.”

Ashley Theophane: The Long journey to the Top

ashley-theophane
It is week three in Las Vegas and the work load is increasing week by week. My team truly do work hard.
My friend Ishe Smith is already the first and only Las Vegas born fighter to win a world championship. On May 2nd he aims to win his second world title. I believe he will!

I’ve come a long way. From York Hall in Bethnal Green to the MGM Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Who says dreams don’t come true? I’ve fought on the biggest stage in the world of boxing.

I push myself day in day out to get the best out of my body. I’m a fighter, a spartan, a barbarian in the ring. That’s my job. To fight, to give my best and to win. But to reach for the stars and be one myself. It would not be possible without guidance from three great men. I’m able to be here because of a great team around me. Floyd Mayweather, Leonard Ellerbe and Rene Carayol.

Rene Carayol walked into my life three years ago. A chance meeting at Andy’s barber shop in Paddington, West London. Rene came to my British title challenge to the dominate British champion Lenny Daws to support me and see if I was as good as my barber, Andy believed I was. I crushed Lenny, dropping him twice in a unanimous decision that ripped the British crown from him and bestowed the crown on my head. I was now the King of the 140lb division in Great Britain. Only Amir Khan has achieved more than me in the British 140lb division, in recent years. I believe we will fight one day. It’s just a matter of when.

Rene saw the talent and charisma I had. He believed I had all the attributes to become a star. He backed me and gave me the resources to set up shop in Las Vegas. I met the number one boxer and highest paid sportsman in the world, Floyd Mayweather and CEO of Mayweather promotions, Leonard Ellerbe, they also believed I had the attributes to become something special. They respected my attitude and the hard working person I am. They have also backed me.
I have three men who have achieved so much in the world of business and sport. I am in safe hands. With a team with so much experience. I can not fail.

I’m closing in on my 35th win. I’m just a couple wins away from a landmark battle with Lamont Peterson or a rematch with the number one 140lb fighter in the world, Danny Garcia. We thought four years ago. Many boxing fans believe I won. The only people who really matter are the three judges sitting around the ring. Two of the three judges believed he won by one round. It was that close. Nothing in it. We will battle again. This time the world will be watching.

A success attitude…? A mindset, a lifestyle, a journey..but NEVER a destination
Too many people see one or two goals as capable of completing their lives. Well, no, in my opinion – as when you factor in the twists and turns of what can be a long hard life road then ALL you can have is the right mentality to see you through – Brian James

Both fighters are coming into the match with no losses in their careers and a great reputation of being well-rounded athletes within the MMA scene. Houston Heavyweight Skipp Scott Prepares to Upset the Apple Cart: Don’t Believe the Hype About Washington. I’m the Next ‘Big’ Thing!

Towering heavyweight giant Skipp “Strictly Business” Scott (16-1, 10 KOs), the 6′ 8″ native of Houston, Texas, would like to set the record straight about his upcoming fight with heavily hyped, but untested Gerald “El Gallo Negro” Washington (11-0, 8 KOs).

The two mammoth heavyweights (Washington stands 6′ 5″) will collide in the 10-round co-main event on Thursday, April 3, when Golden Boy Live! presents “Night Of The Heavyweights,” a tripleheader of heavyweight action on FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes, from the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California.

Scott, who started boxing in 2006 after acquiring a black belt and having 85 fights as a kickboxer, has decades experience in the combat sports, and says he feels the hype around Washington is unwarranted.

“Besides being represented by Al Haymon, what’s he really got going for him that would make him the favorite over me?” asked Scott about Washington. “I’m not saying I’ve been in with the world’s best, but he’s never fought anyone remotely challenging. I’ve at least fought for a title against a guy 23-6. Washington is a football player who came to the fight game late. His biggest win was against 41-year-old Sherman Williams. Why would anyone call me a test for him? Wait until the fight is over to call anyone the ‘next American heavyweight.'”

Scott, who has run off his 16 straight wins since losing his professional boxing debut while finding the switch from kickboxing to boxing awkward against Aaron Lyons, says he’s also bringing in two secret weapons to his corner on fight night.

Legendary Hall of Fame Trainer Jessie Reid will serve as his co-trainer, along with well-respected Houston boxing staple, Aaron Navarro.

Reid has handled the careers of such greats as Roger Mayweather, Lamon Brewster, Johnny Tapia, Orlando Canizales, Reggie Johnson and Bruce Curry among the 23 World Champions and over 40 world-rated boxers he’s worked with.

And Navarro worked the opponent’s corner in Washington’s last fight, against the very same, and now 12-14-1, Arron Lyons, and got a good look at him.

“Jessie Reid knows how to beat anybody,” continued Scott. “His record speaks for itself. And Aaron got a close-up chance to study this guy and knows all his strengths and weaknesses and trust me when I say we’re going to be exploiting all of them. If you take away all his hype, you have a toss-up fight between two guys who are hungry to prove they’re the next big thing. I realize I’ll be fighting basically in his backyard, but I want a fair shake from the officials and fans and I promise you, I will make the most of it. I’m the fighter people will be excited about after this is all over.”

Juergen Braehmer: History will not repeat itself

Juergen Braehmer (42-2, 31 KOs) will make the first defense of his WBA World Light Heavyweight Title against Enzo Maccarinelli (38-6, 30 KOs) on April 5 in Rostock, Germany.

The reigning champion returns to Rostock for the first time since an ill-fated challenge for the WBA crown in 2008. With this defeat still fresh in his mind, Braehmer is adamant that history will not repeat itself when he faces Maccarinelli.

Q: Mr. Braehmer, what comes to your mind when you think of boxing in Rostock?
JB: That you should only step into the ring when you are fit to fight.
Q: Is this answer related to your missed world title opportunity in 2008?
JB: Yes it is, back then I got roped into the fight by my former management and promoter despite being ill and therefore not in a fit state to compete. The rest is history – history that will not repeat itself. I have sworn this to myself.
Q: You will return to Rostock on April 5 as the defending champion. Is there a difference between defending a title and challenging for it?
JB: When you are the champion you do not have to wait in the ring as long as your opponent for the first bell to ring. Other than that I do not see any real difference, whether it be in the preparation or during the bout. You are fighting for the championship of the world. The man with the biggest heart will win, simple as that.

Q: Your coach Karsten Roewer must have had a lot to do with you recent success. Has he prepared you for the challenge that Maccarinelli will bring to the table?

JB: Definitely! Working with Karsten is fun and he has got me back to the top. He often says the right things in between rounds and sees things that I might not notice in the heat of the battle. We really have a great chemistry. But please do not sit him beside me when I am driving, as he is a terrible back-seat driver – I would rather walk.
Q: Your opponent has said that sparring with the legendary Joe Calzaghe makes him know more about southpaws than anyone else. Does that worry you?

JB: Absolutely – not! When was the last time he sparred Calzaghe – a decade ago? And even if he knows him inside out, it will not help against me. I may be a southpaw but my style is totally different to his famous compatriot. He will find this out sooner rather than later.
Q: What do you see as your key to victory over Maccarinelli on April 5?

JB: I think my ability to adapt and the variety of my attacks will be the deciding factor. It will not only be my selection of punches that does the damage but also their power. Maccarinelli is a former cruiserweight, who has had to come down 25 pounds in weight. I do not see him as a natural light heavyweight and I am known for being a pretty good body puncher, so I believe I am going to wear him down.
Q: Your 35 years old – is retirement already on your mind?
JB: Certainly not! Just look at the other world champions in my weight class – in comparison to them I am a spring chicken. Hopkins is going to turn 50 and Stevenson is 36. Only Kovalev is younger than me. As long as I am feeling at the top of my game, I will keep on doing what I am doing, and that is defending my belt.

There are still a limited number of tickets available for this show via www.eventim.de.

MANUEL CHARR vs. KEVIN JOHNSON on April 12th in Bonn “Peace Fighter” Hamid Rahimi as co-feature

On April 12th, 2014, two former foes of WBC heavyweight champion “in recess” Vitali Klitschko square off at the Telekom Dome in Bonn, Germany, when local hero and WBC #6 rated Manuel Charr faces Kevin “Kingpin” Johnson on a show promoted by Charr’s “Diamond Boy Promotion”. Johnson went the distance with the elder Klitschko brother losing a lopsided decision in December 2009 and has lost three of his last four against Tyson Fury, Christian Hammer and Dereck Chisora. Manuel Charr was stopped by a cut when he challenged Vitali in September 2012 but successfully recovered from his sole career loss winning four in a row and collecting a couple of WBC regional titles.

In the co-feature “Peacefighter” Hamid Rahimi will step into the ring against an opponent to be announced. The 30 year old middleweight contender from Afghanistan made worldwide news in 2012 when he organized the first ever professional boxing fight in his hometown Kabul labelled as “Fight for Peace”. Rahimi stopped Said Mbelwa in the seventh round to claim the WBO intercontinental middleweight championship. He was originally scheduled to face Billy Joe Saunders in a WBO eliminator in April but Saunders suffered an injury so the fight had to be postponed. Now Rahimi will fight in Bonn instead to get ready for his elimination bout in England later this year.

Besides the action in the ring the show on April 12th in Bonn will feature some international music acts lead by German rap superstar Prince Kay One who is co-promoting Charr and will perform live at the “Diamond Boy’s” walk-in to the arena. In addition to that former Monrose lead singer Bahar, rockstar Percial Duke and 80s-pop-icon Fancy will showcase their talent at the Telekom Dome.
