Revitalized DeLomba ready for a fresh start

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (March 20th, 2014) – Getting motivated to fight and actually stepping through the ropes and trading blows with an opponent has never been a problem for Cranston, R.I., welterweight Nick DeLomba.

“I’ve always had structure in the gym,” DeLomba said, “but I never had it in my life.”

With a new team in his corner, DeLomba (2-0) has finally found that much-needed balance between boxing and life outside of the gym, putting the 24-year-old welterweight on a collision-course with greatness in a region littered with talented 147-pounders.

The real measure as to whether or not DeLomba has turned the corner will come Friday, March 28th, 2014 when the Gary Balletto protégé steps back into the ring in a four-round bout on the undercard of Classic Entertainment & Sports’ professional boxing event at Twin River Casino in Lincoln, R.I. It will be DeLomba’s first fight since he beat Evincii Dixon by unanimous decision in May.

Shortly after that fight, DeLomba parted ways with his former trainers and went through a brief transition period where he essentially trained himself until he linked up with Rhode Island-based boxing coach Vic Fagnant. The two have worked together since the start of 2014 and DeLomba has noticed an immediate improvement in his life both in and outside of the gym.

“It’s a tremendous difference,” he said. “I pick up things quickly. Vic says I’m one of the few who listens to what he says and then goes out and does it. My angles are much better, my positioning, technique – he’s made a big difference in my life.

“He makes it so that every part of my day is about being a professional, whether it’s my diet, sleeping plan, what I’m doing, or who I’m with. He touches base with me every morning and every night when I leave the gym. It’s what I needed.”

Even as DeLomba debuted in 2013 with back-to-back wins in a pair of six-round bouts – a rare feat considering most fighters start out with four-rounders – he found himself doing most of the work on his own without much help from his previous trainers. He actually fired his camp twice during the preparation for the bout against Dixon and still let them work his corner the night of the fight.

“That whole camp was the turning point for me,” DeLomba said. “Even when it came time for the fight, I was in the locker room preparing and they were nowhere to be found. They were somewhere out in the crowd while I was wrapping my own hands.”

Through it all, DeLomba won the fight, picking himself up off the canvas following an early knockdown and dominating the final five rounds to earn the unanimous decision.

“It was like another day at the gym to me,” he said.

After beating Dixon, DeLomba agreed to fight Connecticut’s Carlos Hernandez in November, but showed up two pounds heavy at the weigh-in. Though the two camps tried to reconcile, the fight fell through, leaving DeLomba embarrassed, but determined to right the ship in 2014.

“I was in transition at the time,” he said. “I had no trainers, Gary was in and out of the hospital with infections, we had no heat at the gym – everything that could have went wrong did go wrong. Those two pounds killed me.

“I was really just training myself and getting up in the morning to push myself. Gary’s motivation is what drove me. When I was in the gym freezing because we had no heat, I’d look up at his posters and find my motivation. Anything is possible if you put your mind to it.”

But DeLomba needed more than motivation. He needed someone reliable in his corner. Shortly before the scheduled bout in November, Fagnant reached out to DeLomba to invite him to his gym to do some pad work and get some sparring. The two already had a brief history; as an amateur, DeLomba spent six months training with Rhode Island prospect Anthony Marsella Jr., who was Fagnant’s student at the time. After the weigh-in fiasco, DeLomba eventually decided he wanted to work with Fagnant on a full-time basis.

“It was an easy transition,” DeLomba said. “We’ve got a great team. Vic also trains [Providence-based MMA fighter] Luis Felix and he and I push each other all the time. I helped push him for his last fight [on March 14th]. It’s an all-around solid team.”

The real test comes next Friday when DeLomba puts Fagnant’s tutelage to work inside the ring. It’s a chance to erase November from his memory and focus on a fresh start to 2014.

“I can’t wait,” DeLomba said.

The main event on March 14th features Jersey City, N.J., light middleweight Chris Chatman (11-3-1, 5 KOs), the eccentric, entertaining fan-favorite who is 2-1 lifetime at Twin River, facing The Contender Season 2 champion Grady Brewer (30-18, 16 KOs) of Lawton, Okla., in an eight-round bout.

Tickets are priced at $41, $76 and $126 (VIP) and can be purchased by calling 401-724-2253/2254, online at www.cesboxing.com or www.ticketmaster.com, or at the Players Club at Twin River. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

With Chatman-Brewer at the top, the undercard is stacked with the region’s top talent, including rising star KJ Harrison-Lombardi (5-0-1) of Providence, who will aim to keep his undefeated record intact in a four-round middleweight bout against Jason Bakanowski (0-1) of Worcester, Mass.

Coming off a knockout win over veteran Arthur Saribekian in November, Cape Cod, Mass., heavyweight Jesse Barboza (7-1-1, 5 KOs) will look to stay on track against East Stroudsburg, Pa., heavyweight Glenn Thomas in a four-round bout while Springfield, Mass., welterweight Zack Rasmey (6-0, 3 KOs) takes on veteran Shakha Moore (11-19-3, 2 KOs) of Norwalk, Conn., in a six-rounder.

Louisiana cruiserweight Alvin Varmall Jr. (2-0, 2 KOs), who made his Twin River debut in February with a knockout win over Andre Ward, will return to face Devon Mosley (0-0-1) of Capitol Heights, Md., in a four-round bout and Chattanooga, Tenn., lightweight prospect Ryan Martin (3-0, 2 KOs) will face Justin Robbins (2-5, 1 KO) of Springfield, Ill., in a four-round bout. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Puerto Rican Sensation Roberto Acevedo Makes Main Events Debut 4/4

Philadelphia, PA: Roberto Acevedo (8-1-0, 5 KOs), the 27 year old sensation from Puerto Rico, who stunned the crowd at Resorts International Casino & Hotel with the first round knockout of Ilshat “The Sherriff” Khusnulgatin on January 24th, will make his Main Events debut on Friday, April 4th at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, PA against Lee Campbell (6-0-0, 3 KOs), 36, of Laurinburg, NC. In addition to making his Main Events debut, Acevedo will also make his Philadelphia debut.

Roberto is a fighter who has defeated all the odds. Doctors told him on two separate occasions (once after he suffered three gunshot wounds as the victim of a drive-by shooting and once after he was hit by a drunk driver) that he would never fight again. He came back after both injuries to then turn pro a few years later.

His opponent, Lee Campbell built up his undefeated record almost exclusively in his home state of North Carolina. Only one of his fights took place elsewhere, his last fight, a majority decision win over Anthony Mack at Fitzgerald’s Casino and Hotel in Tunica, MI on August 24, 2013. This will be his first fight in the northeast.

Acevedo is very excited to make his Main Events debut, “I am very happy and positive with all the work that is being done in the gym for this fight. After my last fight I got back in the gym only two days after returning to Puerto Rico. I want to thank my new promotional banner Main Events and my manager Free Agent Boxing for these new opportunities.” He also added, “Regarding my opponent we know very little as there was a last minute change. Now we will be doing the necessary changes to bring another victory to Puerto Rico. Team Acevedo all the way!”

Roberto is managed by his brother Jose, who said, “Roberto is a future world champion in the making. He is back with his amateur trainer for the past year and has made several very strong improvements. In his last fight he showed the boxing world that he’s a fighter to keep a close eye on. He is not impressed or overwhelmed by records. Roberto is a hard worker; he deserves and is working hard for what is coming his way. We are very happy with the fast and steady move that Main Events has in plan for him.”

Main Events’ CEO Kathy Duva said, “Roberto scored a huge upset win over Ilshat. When the spotlight was on him, he really stepped up and that’s what we look for in fighters. We’re putting him in with an undefeated opponent again and I can’t wait to see what he does this time.”

Culcay meets Larbi on April 5 in Rostock

ck Culcay (16-1, 10 KOs) wants to make his breakthrough in 2014. “Either a World or European Championship, I am going to fight for one of those titles before year’s end.” But before the 28-year-old can think of such possibilities, he has to beat Salim Larbi (19-4-2, 7 KOs) on April 5 in Rostock, Germany.

However, the Frenchman wants to get his hands at Culcay’s WBA Intercontinental Belt. Larbi: “I already fought for a world title in 2012, where I came up short. Though, this experience will help me to beat Culcay.” The 26-year-old lost against Lukas Konecny in a fight for the WBO Interim World Championship.

Still, Culcay seems to be relaxed despite those challenging words. “I won’t let Larbi stop me on my way to the top!” If anything, “Golden Jack” wants to improve his knockout ratio to 11 early wins in 18 fights, after having won his last two bouts by decision.

Fight fans are also going to witness a rematch at Stadthalle Rostock, as Dominik Britsch (28-1-1, 9 KOs) will clash again with Soufiene Ouerghi (6-3, 4 KOs). The last time these two fought in December, Britsch won via controversial decision. This time, the middleweight from Germany does not want to leave any doubts.

In the main event on April 5 at Stadthalle Rostock Juergen Braehmer will defend the WBA Light Heavyweight Championship versus former cruiserweight titlist Enzo Maccarinelli. There are still a limited number of tickets available via www.eventim.de

WBA INTERNATIONAL WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPION LUIS COLLAZO WANTS TO FACE FLOYD “MONEY” MAYWEATHER IN “DREAM” BARCLAYS CENTER FIGHT

Collazo Wins
BROOKLYN, NY (March 20, 2014) – Its no secret that Brooklyn native and current WBA International Welterweight Champion Luis Collazo is hoping to land a shot at facing pound-for-pound king Floyd “Money” Mayweather and on his quest he has received the support of Brett Yormark, CEO of Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. Yormark called a possible Mayweather vs. Collazo bout a “Dream Fight” for Barclays Center.

“How great would it be for Brooklyn if the favorite son of Brooklyn fights this legendary fighter Floyd Mayweather? I think that goes down as, in many respects, the rational for what we want to do here,” Yormark told Mitch Abramson of Boxing Scene.

“Getting a chance to fight Floyd and prove I’m the best is definitely the goal,” said Collazo. “Now, getting a chance to fight Floyd at home [Brooklyn], that’s a whole different ballpark. That’s a dream.”

Mayweather is set to face Marcos Maidana on May 3 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, while Collazo has set eyes on Amir “King” Khan. No official statements have been made.

“Amir Khan up next and then, Floyd at home, that would be ideal,” said Collazo with a grim smile. “I’m very proud Mr. Yorkmark thought of me and Mayweather as Brooklyn’s ‘Dream Fight,’ that makes me truly proud of my roots, of Brooklyn.”

Dusty Hernandez-Harrison Autograph Signing and Fan Photos This Saturday in Brandywine, MD

Washington, D.C., (March 19, 2014)- Fresh off of his exciting victory on ESPN Friday Night Fights, undefeated 19 year-old teenage welterweight prospect Dusty Hernandez-Harrison will be appearing at the Chick-fil-A at 16003 Crain Highway in Brandywine, MD this Saturday, March 22 to test one of their signature recipes while taking photographs and signing autographs with fans.

The Brandywine location of the immensely popular, billion dollar food chain has been a longtime supporter of Dusty and his career, both in the amateurs and professionally. The gracious boxer frequents the suburban Washington, D.C. Chick-fil-A location and is often greeted with a fanfare of autograph and photo requests by both patrons and employees.

Noticing Dusty’s growing admiration, on the professional sports and entertainment scene and largely on social media, Chick-fil-A wants to return their appreciation and has announced that Dusty and his friends, family and fans will be on site this Saturday to try some of their new menu items as well as some of Dusty’s classic favorites. Recently, the young boxer’s fan base has grown to include well know celebrities, receiving tweets from the likes of actor Mark Wahlberg, rappers Wale and Fat Joe, six-time Pro-Bowl wide receiver Terrell Owens, and the World’s Greatest Poker Player and 9-time WSOP bracelet winner Phil Ivey to name a few.

While taking a brief break from the ring, Dusty welcomes every opportunity to meet his fans, sign autographs and take photos, which fan appreciation has become a signature of the young star throughout his career. “I appreciate all the people that support me and what I’m doing. They show their appreciation for me when I am in the ring and travel all the way across the country so I think it will be good to spend time with them here at home.” Hernandez-Harrison said. Jovially, Dusty added that “The best part is that I don’t have to watch my weight right now which is important when I am preparing for a fight so I can eat as much as I want.”

In his last outing on national television, Dusty scored a six-round unanimous decision over hard punching Hawaiian Michael Balasi. Coming off of his latest victory, Dusty remained undefeated and improved his record to 21-0 with 11 KOs and is looking forward to fighting in his native Washington, D.C. in 2014.

Carcamo looking for 2nd dominant performance in Boxcino

Philadelphia (March 19, 2014)–Back on February 21, Fernando Carcamo (16-5, 13 KO’s) scored the only knockout in the quarterfinal round of the Boxcino 2014 lightweight tournament. He will look to continue to that momentum when he takes on Miguel Gonzalez (23-3, 16 KO’s) in the semifinals which will take place on March 28 at the 4 Bears Casino & Lodge in New Town, North Dakota.

The bout was be televised Live on ESPN, ESPNDeportes+ and WatchESPN beginning at 9 PM Eastern.

Carcamo of Ciudad, Mexico looked terrific in dispatching previously undefeated Samuel Neequaye in the 2nd round and now he turns his attention to the accomplished Gonzalez who has been on a roll as of late.

The performance over Neequaye did not just happen by coincidence as Carcamo put in the work needed to impress the audience who was watching around the world.

“It was all a part of the training camp we had. It was the best preparation that I ever had and I was happy to materialize it with a knockout and it was even better that it was the only stoppage of the quarterfinals,” said Carcamo.

Carcamo respects Gonzalez but he feels that this fight should be another where he will have his hand raised at the end of the fight.

“He is a pretty good fighter but he has weak points and we will attack them and break his spirit.”

Carcamo knew going into the tournament that it would be a great chance to showcase his ability and become a player in the lightweight division.

“I am just really motivated. I know this will take me to a completely different level and get me really close to a title shot. I am 100% into this and looking forward to this fight and want to give the fans what they want,” finished Carcamo.

Andreas Evensen: I have unfinished business

Andreas Evensen (17-3-1, 6 KOs) announced his return to boxing this week following a thirteen-month hiatus from the sport. The Norwegian fighter will make his comeback at the Nordic Fight Night on April 12th at the Blue Water Dokken in Esbjerg, Denmark against Kakhaber Avetisian (32-21-1, 15 KOs).

‘’Boxing is the sport I love,’’ said Evensen. ‘’But it took a break and a change of environment for me to rediscover my passion. Now I have it back, I realise that there is so much more I want to do and accomplish – I have unfinished business!’’

To prepare for his return, Evensen has enlisted the help of Ricky Burns’ trainer Billy Nelson and based himself at the renowned Scottish coach’s Glasgow gym.

‘’Billy is a very hard trainer, much like my former coach Helge Wærøy. While I am very thankful for everything Helge did for me, I felt the time was right for a change. Billy is able to offer a fresh pair of eyes and a new perspective, which I need in order to develop.’’

Evensen is currently sparring with WBA Super Bantamweight Champion Scott Quigg. The 28 year-old believes this will give him an extra edge when he steps into the ring on April 12th.

‘’Sparring with a world champion is the perfect preparation for this fight. I have been getting some really tough work in the gym with Scott. When I face Avetisian in Esbjerg I will be approaching the fight as though I am facing a world champion.’’

Tickets for the Nordic Fight Night in Esbjerg are available at billetten.dk.

A 23-year-old with a bright future in boxing, Fairfield’s Alan Sanchez (12-3-1, 6 KOs) has come a long way in just 16 fights, defeating top level foes like Manuel Leyva and Artemio Reyes. Even though he lost his most recent bout in September in San Antonio via decision to WBA International Welterweight Champion Luis Collazo, he learned several valuable lessons that he will apply against Silva.

Jorge “Pantera” Silva (19-5-2, 15 KOs) of Tijuana is not lacking in experience, as he has been facing anyone and everyone since turning pro in 2008, including Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo and Yoshihiro Kamegai. At 22-years-old, he hopes to get back on the winning track against Sanchez and will be pulling out all of the stops in search of victory.

Coming off of a successful Texas homecoming in February that saw him knock out Peter Oluoch in four rounds, Desoto’s Errol Spence Jr. (11-0, 9 KOs) is back in the Lone Star State on April 18 and he’s in search of another crowd-pleasing victory. Then again, that’s what the 24-year-old southpaw has been doing consistently since he made his professional debut in November of 2012.

The fighting pride of San Antonio, Raul “The Cobra” Martinez (30-3, 18 KOs) has always represented his city well and he is in route to becoming one of the top lightweight fighters in the world. Still looking for his first shot to a world title, Martinez has won two of his last three bouts and should he be victorious on April 18, his chances are looking stronger than ever. Brownsville’s Sergio Perales (21-1, 15 KOs) is no one’s stepping stone and after going 3-1 in his last four bouts, including an 83 second stoppage of former world title challenger Lorenzo Trejo last December, his confidence is sky high heading into his bout with Martinez.

A protégé of women’s boxing legend Ann Wolfe, Austin junior welterweight Travell “Black Magic” Mazion (7-0, 6 KOs) is already seen as having the tools to become a world champion in the future and he’s only 18-years-old. A blistering puncher with speed for days, Mazion has won his last two fights in San Antonio and he’s happy to be back again on April 18.

Signed to Golden Boy Promotions and Leija*Battah Promotions, 21-year-old Joseph “The Texas Mongoose” Rodriguez Jr. (5-0, 2 KOs) is coming off of a big 2013 campaign in which he won four consecutive fights without a loss, including three victories in his hometown of San Antonio. On April 18, he will be back at home to face off with Bay City, Texas’ Francisco Arellano.

One of Texas’ top young boxers, Ryan “Cowboy” Karl won several championships during his amateur days, but now he’s ready to test the professional waters. On April 18, the Houston native will make his debut in his home state in a four-round welterweight bout against an opponent to be named.

Lion Heart has been involved as consultant in several Dubai boxing promotions but May Day Mayhem will be the first live professional boxing event promoted by Lion Heart Boxing Promotions as lead promoter in Dubai and will feature former IBF Heavyweight Champion Francois Botha (born 28 September 1968, in Witbank, Mpumalanga), also known as Frans Botha and nicknamed “The White Buffalo,” a South African and perennial Heavyweight Contender.

Botha has had a very distinguished career as a heavyweight boxer, having fought several of the top world heavyweight champions of his time, including Mike Tyson, Shannon Briggs, Axel Schulz, Michael Moorer, Lennox Lewis and Wladimir Klitschko. Botha had a victory in 1995 against Germany’s Axel Schulz to win the IBF heavyweight Championship, suffered a fifth round knockout to Mike Tyson, and had the famous fight with Shannon Briggs which ended in draw. In addition to beating Axel Shultz for the IBF Title, Botha is a four-time world title challenger. Botha also has competed in numerous kickboxing and mixed martial arts events. He will take on an opponent to be announced.

In the co-main Event, Brazilian Welterweight Champion, Former Number 2 ranked Contender and Floyd Mayweather, Sr. trained Antonio Mesquita will commence his comeback against Dubai based French fighter Nordine Arik (17-2). Emirates Golf Club, host of the European Tour sanctioned Omega Dubai Desert Classic and Omega Dubai Ladies Masters, was the first all grass championship golf course in the Middle East when it opened in 1988. Taking pride in its 36 holes of world-class golf, the club sports two of the city’s finest must-play courses, the Majlis and the Faldo Course, which is also the only 18 hole course in the region to offer night golf. Both courses combine the natural rolling desert terrain for a serious golfing test, while the signature clubhouse, remains the most eye-catching in the region. The Majlis Course has been presented with numerous accolades over its 25 year history, the most recent of which were its 2012 ranking by Golf World magazine as one of the ‘Top 100 Golf Courses in the World’ and its award for ‘Best Course Middle East’ in the Asian Golf Monthly Awards 2010 .

From the testing 18 hole Majlis and Faldo courses, to the equally challenging par 3, the Emirates Golf Club draws accomplished and casual golfers looking to improve their game.

‘The Emirates’ is so much more than a golf club, serving as the premier address for all things leisure. Its appeal is equally wide-ranging off course, with everything from fine dining to bar bites available alongside top-notch pool and gym facilities, tennis courts and a brand new spa.

Emirates Golf Club is conveniently located in the heart of ‘New Dubai’, easily accessible off Sheikh Zayed Road and opposite Dubai Media City and Dubai Internet City, and not far from Dubai Marina and Palm Jumeirah. The Metro’s Nakheel station is directly located outside the main entrance, making the club within walking distance for leisure and restaurant guests during the cooler winter months.

Says, Edward Mendy, Lion Heart Boxing Promotions CFO, “We see the potential of the UAE as the next Boxing Mecca and are excited to be early movers in the space. We are really encouraged by our continued development and incremental success in the promoting Boxing as a professional sport in UAE. With May Day Mayhem and Thursday Night Fights UAE, Lion Heart Boxing Productions not only plans to introduce the Thursday Night Fights series to Dubai, but also intends to develop the series into a major UAE sporting brand for worldwide television export. Further, we see Thursday Night Fights UAE as an additional platform to facilitate the growth and further development of Arab boxers in general and Emiratis in particular.”

Thursday Night Fights UAE will be broadcasted live on Dubai Sports in the UAE and MENA Region, as well streamed lived worldwide on ESPN3. Additionally, Thursday Night Fights UAE will be rebroadcast on a delayed basis by Fox Sports in the MENA Region and via regional sports channels in the USA, which reach over 150 Million American cable homes. Lastly, Thursday Night Fights UAE will be syndicated regionally and in other markets, worldwide as feasible.

LOS ANGELES (March 19) – Following a spectacular victory over top featherweight contender Robinson “Robin Hood” Castellanos in Mexico on Feb.15, Nicaragua’s Rene “Gemelo” Alvarado is now the latest addition to the Golden Boy Promotions roster, as the Los Angeles-based promoter is pleased to announce his signing to an exclusive contract.

“This is the most exciting moment of my career, and as a member of the Golden Boy Promotions team I know I’ll get every opportunity to achieve my dreams in this sport,” said Alvarado. “My win against Castellanos was just the beginning, and I hope to get a world title fight soon.”

“Rene Alvarado flew onto our radar with his win over Castellanos last month, and with his skill, determination and warrior spirit, we believe he has all the tools to become a world champion,” said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “He is a great addition to our team and we’re pleased to be working with him.”

Stivens Bujaj Headlines against Victor Barragan this Weekend in Tacoma, WA

Tacoma, WA (March 19, 2014) – Top ten American cruiserweight, Stivens “Superman” Bujaj (11-0, 8 KOs), is set to make his next appearance this weekend when he takes on California’s Victor Barragan (12-7, 3 KOs) in the 10 round main event of Battle at the Boat 95 at the Emerald Queen Casino. A six bout undercard is also scheduled throughout the evening, featuring Fife’s Cameron Sevilla-Rivera (2-0, 2 KOs) and Buckley’s Jeremy McCleary (2-0) who are on the fast track since making their professional debuts.

A limited amount of tickets for Battle at the Boat 95, scheduled for Saturday, March 22nd at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, WA are still available and can be purchased at the EQC box office and online through Ticketmaster. Prices start at $25.

The 23 year old, Stivens Bujaj, has put the petal to the medal since making his professional debut in 2010, accumulating an 11-0 record with eight knockouts. In Bujaj’s last appearance, he earned the USA New York State cruiserweight title, knocking out Elvin Sanchez in the first round of the scheduled eight round bout. The success comes as no surprise to Bujaj, who after his last fight stated to www.secondsout.com that he wanted to take a shot at the top ten by the end of 2014. With only 11 professional fights on his undefeated record, Bujaj is certainly on the right track to become a true contender in the cruiserweight division.

In the final years of his amateur career, Bujaj competed in the prestigious New York Golden Gloves tournament, being named the heavyweight champion in both 2009 and 2010.

Bujaj’s opponent at Battle at the Boat 95, Victor Barragan, will be making his third appearance at the Emerald Queen Casino when he steps into the ring on March 22nd. Barragan’s career highlight came in 2009 when he TKO’d Arthur Williams (47-17-1, 30 KOs) in the seventh round for the interim WBC United States cruiserweight title.

Also scheduled is a stacked six fight undercard, all four rounds, featuring the Northwest’s most promising young boxers, including Fife’s hard hitting Cameron Sevilla-Rivera and Buckley’s amateur standout, Jeremy McCleary.

Jeremy McCleary (2-0) vs. Corben Page (4-8-1) at 128 Lbs.
Cameron Sevilla-Rivera (2-0, 2 KOs) vs. Juan Carlos Rodriguez (1-2, 1 KO) at 156 Lbs.
Jared Teer (1-1) vs. Sean Quinnett (0-1) at 147 Lbs.
Harrison Bevens (debut) vs. Josh Solis (0-1) at 161 Lbs.
Jon Jackson (debut) vs. Jared Torgeson (debut) at 200 Lbs.
Cole Milani (debut) vs. Mark Garcia (1-1) at 161 Lbs.

Doors for Battle at the Boat 95 open at 6 PM with the first fight scheduled for 7 PM. You must be 21 years or older to enter the casino. QUOTES FROM THE ROAD TO WORLD SERIES OF FIGHTING 9: ROUSIMAR “TOQUINHO” PALHARES AND YUSHIN “THUNDER” OKAMI

“Steve Carl is a tremendous athlete, and I have a great deal of respect for him. He is the champion in an extremely tough welterweight division. I’m blessed to be in a position to challenge him for his title, so now I need to go out there and do my best and show the world that I deserve that belt more than he does.”

“I am working hard every day in camp with Team Nogueira. My team has been very good for me, both in supporting me through a transitional period and helping me prepare for one of my biggest fights to date. I get to work out in the gym with several legends in the sport, and they are pushing me every day to become the best fighter I can be.”

“I am confident in my skills and abilities here at any weight, but I feel great at 170 pounds. I don’t want to underestimate my opponent, but I think that I’m capable of becoming welterweight world champion at the World Series of Fighting, or any other organization for that matter.”

“I don’t have much to say about the past at this point. I am focusing all of my energy on this fresh start with World Series of Fighting and I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue fighting elite fighters on an internationally televised and well respected organization.”

“I was approached by several organizations and had many offers on the table, but I felt that World Series of Fighting was the best option for me at the moment. Their welterweight division is very deep with top talent like Steve Carl, Jon Fitch, Josh Burkman, Tyler Stinson, Gerald Harris, and I am anxious to test myself against all of them.”

“My manager told me I had been released from the UFC on the wire. I don’t remember my reaction much. I guess I was surprised at first, but I always prepare the worst when I lose, so I recovered my composure with time. Thankfully I received offers from many promotions as soon as my release was announced. I received offers from Japan, Asian promotion, and also promotions from Europe.”

“When World Series of Fighting presented an offer for me, I was very happy. WSOF is a new promotion, so history is going to be made here and now, and I plan on being a part of it. I think that the great opportunity to make history and the exposure with NBC made the difference for me. I think that the center of the MMA is North America.”

“My nickname actually comes from a Japanese pro wrestler named Jushin ‘Thunder’ Liger. He is a great fighter, and our names rhymed so it stuck.”

“World Series of Fighting has several powerful middleweight fighters, and I know that this would be a better challenge for me. Svetlozar Savov has high physical ability and I feel his movement of one-on-one is very powerful. He is a young, energetic fighter with an aggressive fighting style. But my skills are more evolved, and I will put pressure on him at all times an attack him with a wider range of skill. I’m sure this will bring me a victory.”

“My main focus and only goal is to become the World Series of Fighting champion, and I’m going to start on that March 29 with Savov. Don’t miss it!”

Cunningham in for the Fight of His Life April 4

Steve Cunningham
Philadelphia, PA: Steve “USS” Cunningham (26-6-0, 12 KOs) has more motivation than ever to defeat Amir “Hardcore” Mansour (20-0-0, 15 KOs) on Friday, April 4th at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, PA and live on NBCSN Fight Night. Cunningham said, “This isn’t about a belt or about winning, this time I need this for my family. I need to make money. I have to get a new house for my daughter’s condition. I am fighting for another pay day and to keep going. ”

His opponent did not fight professionally for over nine years while he served time in Schuylkill Federal Correctional Institution in Minersville, PA for drug possession, though he spent any free time training and honing his boxing skills behind bars. Steve took a very different path to get here. He learned to box while serving in the United States Navy but he believes both men are equally as hungry, “I know Mansour speaks about how hungry he is and how his time in prison made him so, but I don’t have time to waste either. I am fighting for something much more important.”

The two men sparred together when Mansour was first released from prison. Cunningham said, “I have worked with him on one fight. It was a good learning experience for me. He was much stronger and much hungrier. He is older but very powerful. Those years in prison kept him young. I have seen him fight numerous times. He is pretty good but I believe Steve Cunningham beats Mansour. It won’t be easy. I think he makes for a rough fight. I can get gritty and grimy with him; if I need to be I will.”

Mansour was emotional when he reflected on their sparring sessions, “When I got home in 2010, Steve was the first person I saw. He was fighting a southpaw and needed a sparring partner. I was so happy that I performed well with a world champion after an eight and half year layoff that I was literally crying.”

Cunningham’s strategy for this fight is simple, “My strategy is to be me, but the best version of me with added things. With Adamek I should have won but some people said I could have stepped it up a bit. Well this time I am going to step it up a lot. If I can stop him, I will. Opposition brings out the best in me.”

The 37 year old heavyweight will compete in front of his hometown crowd for the first time since March 29, 2003 when he defeated Demetrius Jenkins in an eight round unanimous decision victory at the historic Spectrum. Cunningham promises to put on a show for his hometown crowd, “This will be the best Steve Cunningham the world has ever seen.”

Main Events CEO, Kathy Duva, said, “Both Cunningham and Mansour, though very different, have very compelling stories with fighting styles to match. It’s also a fight that belongs in Philadelphia, which adds another dimension to what is sure to be a battle in the ring.”

Zeuge vs. Sabau moves to April 5 in Rostock

WBO Youth Champion Tyron Zeuge (12-0, 6 KOs) finally has his first title defense rescheduled. Probably one of the biggest talents at super middleweight, the 21-year-old will go up against equally unbeaten Gheorghe Sabau (10-0, 6 KOs) on April 5 in Rostock, Germany.

Actually, that fight should have gone ahead a week earlier in Berlin but this event was cancelled due to unfortunate events. “That’s no problem to me. Now I will enjoy my next victory near the Baltic Sea”, says the prodigy of Karsten Roewer in a relaxed manner.

Then again, Zeuge’s coach already reminds him to be wary inside the ring. “After an intense study of Sabau’s latest fights I can say that he will be no push-over for Tyron. He tries to make his opponents fight the way he wants them to. Tyron has to make him adapt from the start and not the other way around!”

Zeuge promises to take Roewer’s words seriously: “It’s natural that I gained a lot of confidence due to my experiences so far as a professional boxer. I know that the key to victory is to listen to my coach – almost always.”

In the main event on April 5 at Stadthalle Rostock Juergen Braehmer will defend the WBA Light Heavyweight Championship versus former cruiserweight titlist Enzo Maccarinelli. There are still a limited number of tickets available via www.eventim.de.

Odlanier Solis ready for “epic battle” against Tony Thompson WBC International heavyweight championship this Saturday (March 22nd) in Tekirdag, Turkey

Cuban heavyweight contender Odlanier Solis has spent the last two weeks in Turkey to get ready for his WBC international heavyweight championship bout this Saturday (March 22nd) in Tekirdag against US veteran Tony Thompson. Promoter Ahmet Oner used the long and proud history of his home country to get Solis heated up for the clash of former Klitschko foes.

“We went to the cinema to watch ‘300: Rise of an Empire’. The next day I took Solis to ancient graves from the times of the Ottoman empire”, says Oner. “I wanted to show Solis that he is in a country which has seen a lot of big and important battles over thousands of years. I expect him to enter the ring on Saturday with the same attitude of old Ottoman fighters when they went to war. This is a do or die fight. If Solis beats Thompson I will lead him to another world title fight. But if he loses it might be all over.”
2004 Olympic gold medalist Solis was deeply impressed from the historic sites. “I love Turkey, especially the hospitality of the people here”, says Solis. “And I see the long history as obligation to deliver a great fight. This country and the whole continent have seen big wars. And the next epic battle is coming up this Saturday. Tony Thompson doesn’t know what’s coming for him. My only goal is to become heavyweight champion of the world. And I won’t let anybody stop me on my way.”
As additional motivation, Solis’ family flew in from Miami and arrived in Istanbul today. “Having my wife and my boys here with me is the final missing piece”, adds Solis. “I will not disappoint them as I will not disappoint my fans in Turkey and all around the world. I will beat Tony Thompson and go on to become world champion!”
The WBC International championship between Solis and Thompson headlines a show promoted by Ahmet Oner / Arena Boks Sportif and will take place this Saturday (March 22nd) in Tekirdag, Turkey, about 150 km west of Istanbul at the Mediterranean Sea. The show will be broadcasted live in about 50 countries including Turkey (Kanaltürk), Germany (sportdigital in association with Sky), the United Kingdom (Boxnation) and many more.
In the co-feature promising German-Turkish prospect Agit Kabayel takes own the hard-hitting Nigerian Gbenga “Bang Bang” Oloukun for the WBC Mediterranean heavyweight championship.

Gonzalez eyeing Boxcino and world titles

Philadelphia (March 19, 2014)–Lightweight contender Miguel “Silky Smooth” Gonzalez (23-3, 16 KO’s) is looking for big things in 2014. First on his agenda is defeating Fernando Carcamo (16-5, 13 KO’s) on March 28 at the 4 Bears Casino & Lodge in New Town, North Dakota as part of the semifinal round in the Boxcino 2014 tournament.

Gonzalez defeated Miguel Angel Mendoza on February 21 via split decision in the quarterfinal round and now looks ahead to the power punching Carcamo.

“Everything is great. Training is good and we have been in camp since a week after the Mendoza fight. I am getting the proper preparation,” said Gonzalez.

Although Gonzalez won the fight, he wasn’t totally satisfied with the fight due to Mendoza.

“I think the guy who I was in there with wasn’t quality. I can’t judge my performance other than I was too quick for him.”

Gonzalez is now turning his attention to the hard charging Carcamo, who scored the only stoppage of the quarterfinal round when he took out previously undefeated Samuel Neequaye in two rounds.

“Carcamo is a stand up fighter. He is basic with a left hand. We have had the right sparring for this fight and I am coming in with confidence. I am here to win this tournament and he is just another guy.”

“I see myself as the champion of this tournament and this will lead to being a mandatory contender for a world title.”

With that confidence level, Gonzalez feels he is the man to beat as the semifinals commence.

“It has been a great tournament so far. I can not wait to go to North Dakota and put on a great show and it will be just one more fight left to win Boxcino. After I win this fight, I will go home and rest for a week with my daughter and her mother and start preparing for the final,” finished the Cleveland based contender.

PUERTO RICO (February 19, 2014) – Gary Shaw Productions newly signed amateur stars, Luis Paredes and Jean “Chapito” Rivera will be making their pro debuts this Saturda, March 22 in Ponce, Puerto Rico, on the undercard of Jose Pedraza (15-0, 10 KOs) vs. Alberto Garza (26-6-1, 21 KOs).

Both fighters speak on their upcoming bouts and fighting in their native land of Puerto Rico. Both fighters stand 5’7 with Paredes fighting at featherweight and Rivera campaigning at bantamweight.

The 20-year old Luis Paredes will be facing Josue Class who will also be making his pro debut.
Amateur Championships: Title Open Tournament, PR Caguas Tournament, Florida State Open Tournament, Annual Julian Jackson Boxing Championship
“Making my pro debut in Puerto Rico is very exciting.” said Paredes. “I want to perform at a high level and show my people what I’m made of. This is what I’ve been working toward my whole life and now it’s time to shine. I’ll be looking to knockout my opponent if I have him hurt. If the fight goes the distance, I’m ok with that as well, as long as I coming out on top. I want to make my promoter Gary Shaw happy.”

18-year old Jean Rivera will square off against another fighter making his pro debut, Kevin Vazquez.
Amateur Championships: PR Caguas Tournament, PAL Championship, Title Championship, Florida State Open Tournament, Annual Julian Jackson Boxing Championship

“The time has finally come for me to make the move to the pros and I can’t wait.” Rivera said. “I don’t know much about my opponent, but I know what I have to do once I step in the ring. I’m going to dictate the action from the opening bell. I’m coming to fight my fight. I’m not going to let this guy get into any type of rhythm. I want to thank Gary Shaw for turning me pro.”

WORLD SERIES OF FIGHTING 9 CONFERENCE CALL HIGHLIGHTS

LAS VEGAS (March 18, 2014) – World Series of Fighting hosted a media conference call on Tuesday with “World Series of Fighting 9: Carl vs. Palhares” headliners Steve Carl and Rousimar Palhares, as well as main-card competitors Marlon Moraes, Josh Rettinghouse, Josh Burkman and Tyler Stinson. Joining the fighters on the call was WSOF President Ray Sefo and WSOF Executive Vice President Ali Abdelaziz.

“World Series of Fighting 9: Carl vs. Palhares,” takes place March 29 at Las Vegas’ Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. Tickets for World Series of Fighting 9, which start at just $39, are on sale now at Ticketmaster.com. Tickets can also be purchased at The Joint box office or by phone at (800) 745-3000. The night’s featured fights air live on NBCSN at 9 p.m. ET (6 p.m. PT local time) following preliminary bouts that stream on World Series of Fighting’s official website, WSOF.com beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET (3:30 p.m. PT local time).

The following are highlights from the conference call:

RAY SEFO:
On the possibility of Nick Newell fighting for a world title:
“You know Nick has been making a lot of noise about fighting for the title and I do think he deserves a shot at fighting for that title. Ali and I have spoken about it but there is still not 100 percent confirmation on when that would happen. But without a doubt Nick Newell is definitely in line for that title shot. The kid has proven himself time and time again. He’s an amazing fighter and a huge inspiration to many. I think it’s about time we stepped up and gave him that opportunity.”

ALI ABDELAZIZ:
“This is best fight card we’ve ever put together and the best fight card of the year. You don’t know what’s going to happen I don’t know what’s going to happen in the main event. Next week we are going to make a big announcement that is really going to change the face of MMA. It’s going to be big news and exciting for the fans. Everyone knows the UFC is No. 1 and we are competing against ourselves every day to be No. 1. There will be separation between the UFC and us and then there will be everyone else.

“I knew Marlon (Moraes) before World Series of Fighting. I believe that Marlon is the best 135-pounder in the world. I believe he can beat anyone in any organization. I believe he has grown and is so talented. He can wrestle with ground game. He’s one of the best strikers in the sport. The sky is the limit for him. On the other hand, Josh Rettinghouse has fought an Olympic bronze medalist (Alexis Vila) and he out-wrestled him. I believe this fight is so competitive and I believe a lot of people are overlooking Josh. I believe this is going to be the best fight of the night.”

STEVE CARL:
“This is an amazingly stacked card. Not even as a competitor but even as a fan I’m ready to watch this and compete. I can’t wait for next weekend. It’s going to be a blast.

“(Rousimar) is definitely a very talented fighter and deserves to keep fighting. I don’t know if giving him a title shot right away was really deserving. But at the same time all the controversy surrounding him really does put him in a perfect spot to be in a title spot because there will be so many people tuning into this fight. Whereas if he was just fighting a regular fight on this main card there wouldn’t be as big a buzz. But now that he’s back in it for a title shot the whole world is watching.”

Q: What is your plan if Palhares is immediately going to your legs in this fight?
“Quite simply if he wants it to turn it into a leg-lock war my goal is to simply keep it a fight and that’s about it. Wherever this fight goes he has the ability to go to the leg-lock from wherever. I need to stay aware to where my legs are in comparison to his body and I need to keep this to a fight instead of getting deep into a leg-lock where I’m no longer able to fight but rather just have to defend myself.”

ROUSIMAR PALHARES:
“I am excited for this opportunity and we will make an exciting fight on Saturday night. I am so grateful to the WSOF for this opportunity.”

MARLON MORAES:
“I’m happy with the opportunity and that they gave Josh the chance now. It’s time to show everybody what I’ve been working on and to be the best. I can’t wait.”

Q: How is the transition been from Muay Thai to full-cage fighting?
“It was hard. I had a hard time finding myself inside the cage because it’s a different sport. But as I moved to the United States I started to train with different guys with different styles of fighting like wrestlers and Jiu Jitsu. My trainers are showing me the things I need to use in MMA fights.”

JOSH RETTINGHOUSE:
“Marlon’s a great fighter and I’m a big fan of his. I honestly didn’t expect this opportunity but of course I’m going to jump all over it. I think it will be really exciting and you’ll have to tune in.”

JOSH BURKMAN:
“I’m excited to get back in there. I didn’t have a great performance last time out. So I’ve just gone back and looked at a lot of things I was doing, including fight week. And I believe I’ve fixed a lot of those things. I think I was really comfortable going into the fight with Steve Carl. I think the biggest problem I had with my winning streak was that it made me a little complacent in where I was and what I was doing. When you lose it creates that frustration and that adversity and makes you question things to get better. And I think that’s all that fight did was make me better at my training and a little more disciplined. And I think it will make for the best performance of my career going forward and starting with this fight.”

TYLER STINSON:
“You saved the best for last. I’m just so excited to get back in there and ready to show Ray and Ali that I’m capable of fighting world-class fighters and Burkman is just that. He’s not on the conference call yet. I don’t if he’s just too Hollywood or if he’s just scared to talk to me, but I’m going to go out there and do what I do and knock his lights out.”

NBCSN-TELEVISED MAIN CARD
Champion Steve Carl vs. Rousimar Palhares – for welterweight title
Marlon Moraes vs. Josh Rettinghouse – for inaugural bantamweight title
Yushin Okami vs. Svetlozar Savov
Josh Burkman vs. Tyler Stinson

Roach Clips Bradley

HOLLYWOOD, CALIF. (March 18, 2014) – After completing his first week of training camp at his Hollywood-based Wild Card Boxing Club with Fighter of the Decade MANNY “Pacman” PACQUIAO, Hall of Fame trainer World-Famous FREDDIE ROACH had a few observations he wanted to share as they prepare for their rematch challenge of undefeated World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion TIMOTHY “Desert Storm” BRADLEY. Pacquiao-Bradley 2 will take place Saturday, April 12, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. It will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View®, beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET / 6:00 p.m. PT:
“Manny started the week a little slow due to jetlag but finished off strong on Saturday. He was just brilliant in his sparring on Saturday. His footwork was effortless, his hand speed was blazing and his power is as good as it’s ever been.

“We are training for big game in this fight. Manny knows he is going to have to hunt Bradley down and close the show this time. The first fight with Bradley was so easy for Manny that after six rounds he just took it easy on him. Not this time. Our Mantra is ‘Close the show. No mercy.’ You don’t have don’t have to be a groundhog to know that Bradley’s days as welterweight champ are numbered. It’s Last Call for Bradley on April 12.

“Manny is really motivated for this fight. We decided no matter how many fights we have remaining, we are determined to run the table and win every one. And when it is over it is going to be as world champion. And that can only happen with a total and absolute victory over Bradley.

“Bradley says he fought Manny last time with two bad feet. I don’t remember him coming into the ring in a wheelchair. He hurt his feet when Manny connected his power punches on him. Manny hit Bradley so hard it broke his ankles.

“For Bradley to say ‘Manny doesn’t have the hunger anymore and it’s never coming back’ and ‘Manny no longer has his killer instinct,’ that tells me that Bradley is still suffering from the concussion Provodnikov laid on him.”

Pound for pound titans PACQUIAO (55-5-2, 38 KOs), the lone congressional representative from the Sarangani Province in the Philippines, and defending world champion BRADLEY (31-0, 12 KOs), of Palm Springs, Calif., will go mano a mano in their eagerly-anticipated WBO welterweight championship rematch. This will also be Pacquiao’s first fight in the U.S. since 2012.

When Pacquiao and Bradley rumbled the first time, on June 9, 2012 at MGM Grand, Bradley’s hand was raised via a controversial split decision, ending Pacquiao’s welterweight title reign as well as his seven-year, 15-bout winning streak. Though both fighters claimed victory neither was satisfied. Destiny may have played a hand in their first battle but it will be survival of the fittest that determines the winner of this exciting rematch.

24/7 Pacquiao/Bradley 2 premieres Saturday, March 29 at Midnight ET/PT on HBO. Show 2 debuts Saturday, April 5 at 11:30 p.m. ET/PT and show 3 debuts Thursday, April 10 at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT two nights before the high stakes welterweight title bout.

Promoted by Top Rank®, in association with MP Promotions and Tecate, remaining tickets for Pacquiao vs. Bradley 2 are priced at $1,000, $800, $600, $400, $250 and $150, not including applicable service charges. There will be a total ticket limit of 12 per person with a limit of 10 per person at the $1,000, $800, $600, $400 and $250 price levels and a limit of two (2) per person at the $150 price level. To charge by phone with a major credit card, call Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000. Tickets will also be available for purchase at www.mgmgrand.com or www.ticketmaster.com.

Eye of the Tiger Management Developing hidden jewels in Canada

MONTREAL (March 18, 2014) – Eye of the Tiger Management (EOTTM) has been developing world-class boxers in Canada the past few years and now, thanks to its hi-definition network (PunchingGrace.com) and popular Fight Night Series, American fight fans may watch top contenders and prospects from North of the Border before they fight on United States-based networks like HBO, Showtime and ESPN.

The seventh installment of the popular Fight Night Series will be Friday night, March 28, featuring World-rated welterweight Antonin Decarie (29-2, 9 KOs), also airing live on pay per view from Lac Leamy Casino in Gatineau, Ontario, Canada.

Fight Club Series, presented by Eye of the Tiger Management (EOTTM), is being distributed in the United States by Integrated Sports Media for live viewing at 7:00 p.m. ET – 4:00 p.m. PT on both cable and satellite pay-per-view via DIRECTV, iN Demand, DISH, and Avail-TVN. The event may also be watched worldwide on PPV at www.PunchingGrace.com.

“We’re giving our fighters opportunities to be seen fighting outside of Canada, through PunchingGrace and PPV in the US, by expanding our borders,” EOTTM promoter Camille Estephan explained. “Their fights will be available to watch in close to 70-million U.S. households alone.”

EOTTM heavyweight Bermane “B. Ware” Stiverne was virtually unknown in the U.S. until his last fight, in which he won a unanimous decision on HBO in convincing fashion against Chris Arreola. WBC #1 Stiverne and #2 Arreola will fight again May 10 on ESPN, at a site to be determined, for the WBC title vacated by retired Vitali Klitschko.

Stiverne’s stable-mate and fellow Haitian, junior welterweight Dierry “Dougy Style” Jean (25-1, 17 KOs), was introduced to the American public on ShoBox, which led to him challenging IBF world champion Lamont Peterson. Jean lost a 12-unanimous decision but proved that he belong among the elite 140-pounders in the world.

“People all over the world are going to know Bermane because of the exposure he’s going to get fighting on ESPN (not ESPN2 that Friday Night Fights is on), but the main ESPN station that shows professional football and other leading sporting events,” Estephan said. “He is fortunate to have that window of opportunity. He’s a heavyweight with power and balls who has the footwork of a lightweight. He’s deadly serious about what he’s doing. We don’t just want him to win the world heavyweight title, we want him to win and defend it many times. He’s not looking past Arreola and is preparing to fight him like they’ve never fought before. They’re the top two heavyweights in the world without a world title.

“Dierry Jean didn’t lose to Peterson because of his ability. Peterson was at his best, his experience and ability to adjust were the difference. Dierry will be fighting in late April, early May, on his way back to the top. He also has the advantage of being able to fight at junior welterweight or lightweight.”

WBC #8/IBF #13 Decarie burst on the American boxing scene on HBO, when he upset previously unbeaten Alex Perez, and the popular French-Canadian parlayed that into another high-profile appearance on HBO, albeit losing a 10-round decision to Luis Carlos Abregu.

Decarie faces former Mexican champion Pablo “Sepulturero” Munguia (19-4, 11 KOs) Mar. 28 in the 10-round main event.

Antonin Decarie vs. Pablo Munguia LIVE on Pay Per View March 28th at 7 pm EST

The next EOTTM hidden jewel who most American boxing fans may not know yet is WBC #3/IBF #5 lightweight Ghislain “Mani” Maduma (16-0, 10 KOs), the reigning NABA and NABF champion. “Maduma is going to burst on the scene – the same show as Dierry fights – in an IBF eliminator,” Estephan noted. “People watching him fight are going to ask where this guy came from because he hasn’t fought on a major network yet. He is an awesome talent.”

The next wave of EOTTM fighters soon to be introduced to American fans include super middleweight Schiller Hyppolite (8-1, 5 KOs), who takes on George Beroshvili (8-1, 5 KOs) in a 10-round bout on Mar. 28.

“Schiller has tremendous talent and the super middleweight division is big in Canada having produced Lucian Bute, Jean Pascal and Adonis Stevenson,” Estephan concluded. “He learned from his only loss and had to make an attitude adjustment. Another fighter who is going to make big news is welterweight Mian Hussian. He has two brothers who are fighters and all they do is box – sleep, eat, train — and then do it all over again the next day. He has a lot of power, plus he’s fast and mean. All he lacks is experience. And don’t forget middleweight (IBF #8, WBO #11, WBC #13) David Lemieux (31-2, 29 KOs). He came up a little too fast but now he’s back and we’ll have some big news about him very soon. And we just signed Steven Butler, a promising 18-year-old who was the youngest Canadian National Team champion.”

Other Mar. 28 undercard fights include lightweight Chris Plaitis (5-0-1) vs. Jesus “Diamante” Perez (4-2, 2 KOs) in a six-round match; super middleweight Pascal Villeneuve (3-0, 2 KOs) vs. Francois “The Tank” Miville (6-1, 2 KOs) and Mitch Louis-Charles (3-1-1, 2 KOs) vs. Guillaume Coude (2-0, 1 KO), cruiserweight Samer Baraket (2-0, 2 KOs) vs. Sandy Pembroke (3-7, 1 KO), and heavyweight Zack Bunce (2-0, 1 KO) vs. Steven Harvey (4-1, 2 KOs) in four-round fights.

All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Chatman, Brewer ready to wage war

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (March 18th, 2014) — As far as out-of-town fighters are concerned, Chris Chatman has had so much success at Twin River the casino might want to consider adding his name to the deed.

The hard-hitting fan-favorite from Jersey City will return to his second home Friday, March 28th, 2014 when he faces The Contender alum Grady Brewer in the eight-round middleweight main event of Classic Entertainment & Sports’ upcoming professional boxing card at the Event Center.

The event also features the return of Cape Cod, Mass., heavyweight Jesse Barboza (7-1-1, 5 KOs); unbeaten Providence middleweight KJ Harrison-Lombardi (5-0-1); welterweight Nick DeLomba (2-0) of Cranston, R.I., and undefeated Springfield, Mass., welterweight Zack Rasmey (6-0, 3 KOs).

Tickets for the event are priced at $41, $76 and $126 (VIP) and can be purchased by calling 401-724-2253/2254, online at www.cesboxing.com or www.ticketmaster.com, or at the Players Club at Twin River. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Originally from San Diego, Chatman (11-3-1, 5 KOs) first won over the Rhode Island crowd in 2009 when he fought tooth and nail against former Olympian and Providence native Demetrius Andrade, at the time the toughest fight of Andrade’s young career. He returned two years later with a knockout win over Rahman Yusubov and made his third appearance at Twin River in July of 2013 by beating hometown favorite Thomas Falowo by unanimous decision.

The muscular, 5-foot-8 southpaw has become an unlikely fan-favorite in Rhode Island with both his colorful interviews at press conferences and no-nonsense approach in the ring. Now, with the crowd firmly in his corner, he’ll face the veteran Brewer (30-18, 16 KOs), who fought alongside Rhode Island’s Gary “Tiger” Balletto on Season 2 of The Contender and won the $500,000 cash prize by beating former world-title challenger Steve Forbes by split decision in the finals.

Like Chatman, Brewer is no stranger to New England; the Lawton, Okla., native fought in 2008 on the undercard of the CES and the Tournament of Contenders’ co-promotion at The Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence, beating Season 2 teammate and former light middleweight world champion Cornelius Brundage by split decision. In 2009, he stopped unbeaten Nigerian prospect Albert Onolunose in the second round of their scheduled 12-round bout and two years later handed world-title challenger Fernando Guerrero — 21-0 at the time — the first loss his career via fourth-round knockout. Brewer has also faced World Boxing Association (WBA) light middleweight champion Erislandy Lara, current World Boxing Organization (WBO) champ Andrade and unbeaten Russian prospect Matt Korobov in his 15-year career.

With Chatman-Brewer at the top, the undercard is stacked with the region’s top talent, including rising stars DeLomba and Harrison-Lombardi, who’ve quickly become household names in Rhode Island. A protégé of Balletto, DeLomba will fight a four-round bout in his first appearance since September while Harrison-Lombardi will aim to keep his perfect record intact in a four-round bout against Jason Bakanowski (0-1) of Worcester, Mass., following his win over Antonio Fernandes in February.

Coming off a knockout win over veteran Arthur Saribekian in November, Barboza will look to stay on track against East Stroudsburg, Pa., heavyweight Glenn Thomas in a four-round bout while Ramsey takes on veteran Shakha Moore (11-19-3, 2 KOs) of Norwalk, Conn., in a six-rounder.
